Introduction and Podcast Return

Speaker
He wants rid of Harry, but he doesn't want to make Harry happy by saying, yes, you can go. but I'm also like, you can't stand Harry because of his weirdness. Now you have the opportunity to get rid of him for the summer and not deal with his weirdness. Why wouldn't you take that opportunity? But he knows that if he tells him, yes, it's going to make Harry happy. And he's like, I definitely don't want to be the cause of his joy.
00:00:22
Speaker
It's a big deal.
00:00:30
Speaker
What we've got to find is our perfect melody So we'll open up a book to a story memory A fantasy to hold on an expedition Won't you step into our world, this is family fiction
00:00:50
Speaker
Hello everyone and welcome back to Family Fiction with Hallie and Carmen. We know we took a break off. um Hallie was sick so we decided to hit pause for a second and it's been a crazy few weeks for me.

Carmen's Convention Experiences

00:01:09
Speaker
Just to do a little bit of a life update, got to meet Kandace Steiner and Lena Hendricks on Tuesday in the sweltering heat of Chattanooga. It was an outdoor event and they had no fans and it's like 90 degrees and we were all sweating including Candy and Lena so it was interesting.
00:01:28
Speaker
um And then got to go meet the Weasley twins at the fanboy convention and the Peshila Barnes who played Magda and Jane the Virgin, one of my favorite shows, and some cast from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and then Barry Corbin, who played Whitey in One Tree Hill.
00:01:48
Speaker
So it's been a meet and greet week for moi. um Unfortunately, supposed to have more meet and greets this year. i still have two more. have Tyler Hilton next month. We're going to his concert and meeting him.
00:02:01
Speaker
And then I have Trey Kennedy in December, and we're meeting him after his show.

Upcoming Events and Canceled Conventions

00:02:05
Speaker
um was supposed to go in november for a vampire dives convention uh they have canceled the convention oh really so we are still going covington because we have the airbnb the lady was going to refund us but we were like let's just go the town has already like a bunch of businesses in the town have already posted that they're going to do like a bunch of themed events since the convention got canceled I'm not sure the full thing behind it, but essentially the company that runs those conventions is
00:02:37
Speaker
going bankrupt and I guess there was some fraud. They're being sued. They're going through a full lawsuit. Oh wow. So they had to cancel the upcoming events for the year and I'm positive like I don't think they'll ever come back. So that's unfortunate because they do host a lot of the Vampire Diaries conventions. The other company that does them is Creation Entertainment which is who does Supernatural. And Hallie and I have had very good experiences with them.
00:03:06
Speaker
So maybe we can do a Vampire Diaries one sometime later. But the town's already said they're going to do like episode showings in the town square on a big screen. Bring your own chair.
00:03:17
Speaker
a bunch of restaurants are doing themed drinks and themed food. um They're still doing like the Mystic Falls pageant.

Disappointment Over Missed Meet and Greets

00:03:25
Speaker
um a bunch of the shopkeepers that know a lot of the cast are doing a lot of things so we're kind of hoping that some of the cast might still show um ian and paul go a lot to do their like brothers bomb bourbon stuff so we're hoping that maybe some of them will still show up and maybe candles will be at the pageant and stuff like that so
00:03:49
Speaker
There's still a chance of meeting people. I am disappointed because I was really excited to meet Claire and Phoebe who play Cleo and Emma in H2O. They play Haley and Rebecca in the Vampire Diaries in the originals. But I was really excited to meet them. We did have tickets for Ian and Paul who I was also excited. But honestly, i think the person let down most by this is my friend Taylor that we were going together.
00:04:15
Speaker
And she is the biggest Vampire Diaries fan, y'all. Like, I feel so bad. She's never met Ian. She's always wanted to meet Ian. We had tickets. She was so excited. And I felt horrible for her whenever it got canceled.
00:04:32
Speaker
Because I know she's sad. It would be like me going to meet the Weasley twins on Saturday and then finding out Saturday morning. they're not going to be there. Like that would be the thing for me. So I felt really bad, but anyways, we're gonna, we're gonna persist. Maybe they'll still be there.
00:04:49
Speaker
Um, and then, um, I think I talked, Somebody else in to go in with us, so it'll be fun. We're going to a girls weekend.

Meeting the Weasley Twins

00:04:57
Speaker
But on the other meet and greet news, the Weasley twins were amazing. For all of you who wonder if they're as nice as they seem on screen.
00:05:07
Speaker
Yes, they are. And they were finishing each other's sentences like Fred and George, and it was really crazy to witness. um But they were super, super nice. They were very great to meet, and I will meet them again.
00:05:19
Speaker
Um, they kind of figure out with conventions, autographs are the way to go because you get to talk to him more of than with photo ops. Yeah. Um, but if they come back next year, you need to go with this. Yeah.
00:05:29
Speaker
I saw a TikTok actually where somebody was freaking out in the Buc-ee's. I'm like, why are these people freaking out? Oh yeah. they yeah And they were at Buc-ee's and everybody in the comments was freaking out. Everybody's like, they're in Tennessee.
00:05:42
Speaker
Yeah. yeah I saw where they went to Buc-ee's. They also got to go to, um, I think it was all over. that got to go to the Opryland and, like, raise the curtain or whatever. So they they did, like, a whole thing, which he said he had been, they had been to West Tennessee before, but never East Tennessee.
00:06:00
Speaker
So this was their first time. But they were so nice, very sweet. um Yeah, they were great. They complimented my shirt. which was a Weasley Wizard Weasel shirt.
00:06:12
Speaker
And then if you want to see the pictures from those meet and greets, just go to my my travel Instagram.

Carmen's Travel Instagram

00:06:20
Speaker
It's at Karmes underscore travel.
00:06:26
Speaker
Karmes is K-A-R-M-S. I think it should be somehow. In my Instagram bio? Maybe, possibly. I don't know.
00:06:37
Speaker
Anyways, if you want to see those pictures, just find that Instagram. It might be under at quorum underscore travel, actually. But, anyways, if you want to see them. But, yeah, it was great.
00:06:49
Speaker
Hallie, do you have any bookish news to catch us up on? Well, Hallie's been reading through my favorite

Hallie's Bookshelf and Kindle

00:06:54
Speaker
author. I have been on a Catherine Cowell's kick, so had that going on. And a lot of other...
00:07:01
Speaker
good book stuff. um I've read a lot of good books this past month and I'm really excited. um I reorganized my bookshelves. I'm really happy with the new setup. They like really good.
00:07:14
Speaker
for As someone who's seen them in person, they look amazing. Yes. um I have finally found the perfect system when it comes to reorganizing my books. I kind of sort of reorganize them by genre and I mean that in a loose kind of term.
00:07:28
Speaker
yeah But and I've also got some like decor on there and stuff that makes them look a lot nicer and I'm really happy with the new setup, and I'm probably going to keep it that way for a while. We're also packing for vacation this Saturday. we are leaving, and I'm going to be turning 21.
00:07:47
Speaker
mar one 21. 21. And also, i got an early birthday present ah sad yesterday. i got my Kindle. Yay. I'm excited. She's a Kindle girly now. Yes. i have definitely fallen into the Kindle...
00:08:05
Speaker
train um it's so convenient especially when you're traveling you don't have to lug around a bunch of books because I read a lot at the beach and so I can just pull out that kindle and I can have like five books on there and I am set for life especially because you got the paper wide didn't you so it's like um we're reflection free so like literally like reading a book is amazing yep and I've got ah case I've got a little pop socket thing that I can use Um, I've got some stickers that I'll stick down in the case.
00:08:36
Speaker
And then Carly also got me these. They're so cute. They're like little dust plugs that you can plug in. And one of them is like a little dagger. And the other one I think is a dragon.
00:08:47
Speaker
think it is a dragon. So jimmy it's super cute. So I'm really excited to get it set up. So I'm excited. I did find out something Kindle related. So we were in the line for Candy Steiner and we were trying, me and Alyssa and Alexis were talking about how the Kindle has those like different settings in the bottom left. You could do like page number, minutes left in chapter or minutes left in book.
00:09:12
Speaker
like um For those of you who have read it on a Kindle, there is also the option to see the location. It'll say like LOC and then a number. And i have never figured out what the heck that is.
00:09:25
Speaker
Like what location? I wondered if it was like word, like the number word in the book. Like you're on word number 1087 in the book and it starts at the top of this page.
00:09:37
Speaker
I could never figure it out. Well, we asked Candy if she knew. And this could be right or wrong. this This is what she took a stab at. She was like, I'm pretty positive that's what it is.
00:09:49
Speaker
It is, ah depending on what size your font is and what font you're using and what page margins, all that stuff set, it tells you um how many pages are going to, like, you're going to scroll through.
00:10:04
Speaker
Really? Yes. Huh. That's something new to learn about. and like that. have been so confused and now I want to test it out. I haven't, I've been listening to an audio book, so I haven't had my Kindle out in a second, but and now I want to test it and see like, okay, so if I change the font, this number is going to change.
00:10:23
Speaker
And so then I'm like, is that number, I guess going to go down? It's interesting. I thought it was kind of cool. I was like, the way I never would have thought of that. So anyways, little, in case you didn't know for all the Kindle readers out there, feel free to correct us in the comments if that's not the correct thing. Cause she also wasn't super positive. So let us know.

New Instagram Posting Schedule

00:10:43
Speaker
um Also, you might have noticed a little bit more activity on our Instagram lately. I'm trying out a new posting schedule with both my bookstagram and our podcast Instagram.
00:10:55
Speaker
um You should see posts from us every day except Sundays. Just because with a podcast Instagram, it's a little harder to fill a full week. So I decided just to like leave Sundays blank.
00:11:06
Speaker
feel like a lot of people aren't on their phone a lot on Sundays anyways because most people are either doing church things or family things and ah feel like Sunday was a good day to... back off on it. um But yeah, we're trying to do a little bit more activity on the Instagram.
00:11:22
Speaker
um Going to be a lot more discussion questions. And I can kind of give you guys like an inside scoop on what the like um kind of schedule is. um So on Fridays, you should see either interactive posts or um our question of the week from that week's episode.
00:11:41
Speaker
um And the interactive posts will kind of be like, Things that you can give us your answer on. Like this is, here's a little prompt. What would how would you answer? Um, on Saturdays, you're going to see highlights that will either be a character highlight or a scene highlight from the week.
00:11:58
Speaker
Um, or just any sort of like Harry Potter related highlight for right now. But when we get in other books, it'll be other book themes. Um, Thursdays will be, Tuesdays and Thursdays, you'll kind of see more reels from us.
00:12:09
Speaker
So if you've liked our reels, then you're going to see more of those. Um, Wednesdays will obviously be, you know, the posts about new episodes. And then on weeks that we don't have new episodes, it'll be your chapter reminder if you want to read along with us.
00:12:23
Speaker
These are the chapters you need to read before next week's episode. Um, I figure it's kind of a good thing to have a little reminder in there. Sometimes people forget to read through the week if they want to read along with us.
00:12:35
Speaker
Um, and then on Mondays, you're going to see a lot of discussion topics. So things to like... Here's something we learned. What's your thoughts on it?
00:12:46
Speaker
Or here's a like intriguing question. How would you answer it? Kind of thing. Kind of like the interactive post, but a little bit different. um For example, I posted the thing about Dumbledore, the Dumbledore time turner theory.
00:13:00
Speaker
um so kind of discussion topics like that so you can look forward to all that from us um we have plenty of stuff coming up hallie and i need you to film a couple things after record okay right we will get started um thank you guys for joining us for today's um you know fun little reread discussion um Obviously, this intro is a little longer than normal. I felt like we kind of needed a little update.

Discussion: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

00:13:31
Speaker
Mm-hmm. We never really update anymore. No. um But the plan for today is to discuss chapters one through five of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. if you've been listening to us for a while, you know we've been rereading through the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling, and we're on Goblet of Fire, which is one of my favorites. It's crazy.
00:13:51
Speaker
It's one of my favorite books, so I'm very excited Yes, this one is very good, and this is, funnily enough, I would say out of all the Harry Potter movies, for some reason, this is probably the one I've watched the most.
00:14:03
Speaker
Don't ask me why, I have no idea. Mine will be the next one. Order of the Phoenix is my, like, tried and true. Yeah. It's hilarious, though, because somebody that I work with, she's reading through the Harry Potter books right now, and I'm just sitting there going, ooh. Well...
00:14:18
Speaker
Um, we do want to give a quick spoiler alert. If you have not read the Harry Potter books and you don't want to be spoiled by anything, um, we suggest you read them and then come back to us, um, because we will be discussing things from this book and things that will happen in this book, maybe ahead of these chapters, as well as things that could happen throughout the rest of the series.
00:14:39
Speaker
So if you don't want to, um, encounter any major Harry Potter spoilers that you're not already aware of, I feel like a lot of people know about most things, but, um, But yeah, if you have not read them and you don't want to be spoiled, go read them come back to us.
00:14:53
Speaker
Or at least watch the movies. Alright, before we get started, we'll do you know the usual, currently reading, and we'll start with Hallie. So my current read is Beautiful Exile by Katherine Cowles. I am trying to get caught up for the new one comes out.
00:15:07
Speaker
And I am loving this series so far. Every single book I have loved. who's your favorite here? Your favorite couple so far? Right now...
00:15:19
Speaker
It's Sutton and Cope. Fair, fair, fair. But right now, I'm on Arden's book, and I'm already liking it. I think you're going to like Arden and Link. That feels to me like your vibe.
00:15:34
Speaker
Yeah, I'm loving it so Because I'm not going to lie, Arden... I don't know. Something about the way they describe her kind of gives me, like, you vibes. So I've always thought, that you would like, Arden.
00:15:44
Speaker
My, my, my tribe true is going be Kai and Fallon. Like, Catherine, I need, I need October to come sooner. But also, I've heard from a reliable source that there is a lot of Kai and Fallon in this new book.
00:15:56
Speaker
So I'm very excited. I love them. Yeah. But I'm glad you're enjoying your Catherine Cowell's journey. Yes. I need to finish reading her backlist and then get started on Daphne Perry because she writes the similar like romantic suspense and Alyssa really likes her.
00:16:14
Speaker
but yeah i'm obsessed i literally read broken harbor in one sitting it was broken so good i i have told alissa like i think so far my favorite book of the series has been broken harbor i loved that book yes i loved broken harbor liked delicate escape um But... They've all been great. I will say, though, Fragile Sanctuary holds a place in my heart. It was very good. But, yeah, Broken Harbor as a story, I like it. And I'm usually not one to like somebody stepping in as a dad and being with the kid, but I loved it. Yeah, it was so good.
00:16:55
Speaker
Now... What's-his-face is, um, what's the name? Anson. I get all my romantic books. This next one's about Trace, right? No, the, from the first book.
00:17:06
Speaker
Anson, yeah. Yes, okay. I get all my romance people mixed up. So the guy that Anson works with, Dax, he is, she's got a new book coming out called Across the Vanishing Sky that's gonna be about him.
00:17:17
Speaker
Oh. So I'm excited. You need to read all the missing pieces, because it is a True crime, like, she runs a true crime podcast and is trying to solve a murder. Like, it's a whole thing.
00:17:29
Speaker
Um. Broken Heart World. But yeah. I've been reading a lot of good books. And another book that really shocked me this week was I read the new Carissa Broadbent book, Slaying the Vampire Conqueror.
00:17:42
Speaker
Very, very good. I actually like her novellas more than I do her series. Don't get me wrong. I liked The Serpent and the Wings of Night, but... I haven't read Songbirds and the Hearthstone.
00:17:52
Speaker
I did. was good. Is it continuation? It is a continuation. It is with... It's the start of a new duology that exists in the same... it But it's the same series, but it's the next installment. It's with Moraine's friend, Misha.
00:18:10
Speaker
It's with her. Okay. I also, that reminds me, some more bookish news we got recently. Duh. ACOTAR. I know. Now, here's the thing.
00:18:21
Speaker
I know there's a lot of debate. I think it's an eight. It's got to be six through eight. and That's when I saw somebody talking about that, and I'm like, what the heck? Because it does kind of look like an arrow. i don't know if she has a crappy way of making eights or if she did that on purpose, but it's a really odd-looking arrow for it to be an arrow.
00:18:38
Speaker
I think it's an eight, and somebody brought up the point that they think she's going to do, like, Throne of Glass, and six and seven will be, like, tandem reads.
00:18:49
Speaker
And I will hunt someone down if that's true. That could make sense, though, if she wanted to make the tandem read Moore's book like it was chaos. Because Moore's been off by herself.
00:19:02
Speaker
And I think that could make sense. um Because then somebody... Well, because the theory right now is that Elaine is next on the POV. And then Moore's book and then Asriel's book will be last.
00:19:16
Speaker
And i could I could see that happening. See, I- If Elaine's book is next, it better be her origin story of her villain origin story. I think we ah we definitely need a Moore book because there is so much we don't know about her.
00:19:33
Speaker
And she's- There's so many theories running around about Moore that I'm like, I need a book about her. Like, I need to know what happened between her and eris because there is more to that story and i will die on that hill well there definitely is and then that's why it could make sense that she would get a book like k.o got a book I don't know.
00:19:53
Speaker
Anyways. um My currently reading is Chasm by Stacey McEwen. She recently released A Forbidden Alchemy, which I had pre-ordered. It came in. It's beautiful. It's gorgeous. The painted edges are amazing. She's been touring for the book. I cannot wait to read it, but I need to finish this trilogy that she wrote first because honestly, I started listening to Chasm and it's been so long since I read Ledge.
00:20:19
Speaker
That it was taking me a minute to be like, oh yeah, that did happen, didn't it? So I'm going to try and listen to Chasm. And then Catherine's new book comes out Tuesday. So that will be next. And then I'm going to come back and listen to Valley and be done with the trilogy.
00:20:36
Speaker
um Stacey's a fantastic author. I do have to say, i don't think she gets the recognition she deserves. Also, one of the funniest people on social media that could ever exist is her.
00:20:50
Speaker
Her Instagram reels crack me up every time. She is on my bucket list to meet one day. i love her. I think she's hilarious. If you don't follow her, please go do.
00:21:00
Speaker
She does like skits where it's like if I was the chosen one and the person's like telling her like um so you're the chosen one you're the one who has to go defeat the big evil we know you're only human but you're the only one that can do it and she goes no thanks and leaves and she just cracks me up with stuff she's hilarious so if you haven't read Stacey or watched Stacey on social media go follow her go read her books I think they're great she writes some mean books
00:21:33
Speaker
All right. Okay, back on track. Well, it's book related. Yeah. We're all good here. All right.

Riddle House and Mysterious Events

00:21:41
Speaker
Chapter one, The Riddle House.
00:21:45
Speaker
Um, we kind of get an inside look on the House of the Riddles, LOL. Um, it used to be a nice place, but now lies abandoned. The story of the family who lived there varied over the years, different stories.
00:21:59
Speaker
Uh, 50 years before, in the summer, a maid entered to find all the Three riddles dead. No one was very sad by their death because everyone thought the family was really weird. um hello Everyone gathered to discuss the murder. And a man arrived saying Frank Bryce, the family gardener, was arrested for the murder.
00:22:23
Speaker
Everyone gossips about him saying he was a weird old man, lived by himself, da-da-da-da-da. By the next morning, everyone is already suspecting that Frank did it. Frank claims his innocence and said that he'd seen a boy with dark hair and pale skin near the house that day.
00:22:42
Speaker
Gee, I wonder who. No one else had seen him, though, and the doctors had examined the bodies, and they all seemed in perfect health, aside from a look of fear on their face.
00:22:54
Speaker
They let Frank go, and new people moved in and out over the years. um Frank still lived near the manor and guarded the house and grounds. Frank awakes one night in August, in our current timeline, and sees a light on in the house.
00:23:12
Speaker
He thinks boys have broken in again and heads up towards the house. He goes in, climbs the stairs, and sees lights in the room across the hall. He looks in and hears a high-pitched voice.
00:23:25
Speaker
Wormtail is instructed to move the chair nearer to the fire. The high-pitched voice mentions milking the guinea for his meal. That is so gross. Because if you've ever watched those Oh Snape.
00:23:38
Speaker
videos where it's like a parody videos they have all episode about milking the snake and so i couldn't listen to this and not think of that and i was cracking up that they actually milk the snake i forgot about this and so i always thought that that parody skit was just a skit i forgot about that and i read it and i was like ew especially considering that according to fantastic beast lore Nagini was once human.
00:24:09
Speaker
Ew. It's all weird. It's all weird. um They mention the Quidditch World Cup being their moment to act. And Frank can't believe his ears. What is Quidditch? What is all this wizardry talk?
00:24:22
Speaker
Wormtail asks if he's sure and says it can be done without getting Harry Potter. um He says it could be done quicker and says how difficult it would be to get Harry Potter.
00:24:33
Speaker
Voldemort asks if he wants to leave him. And he thinks that Wormtail is just trying to weasel his way out. He says he needs Wormtail to take care of his weakened form.
00:24:44
Speaker
He says he will use no one else except Harry Potter. They mention Bertha Jorkin's disappearance, and he mentions his faithful servant returning soon.
00:24:56
Speaker
says he will allow Wormtail to do the tasks other members would give their right hand to do. That comes back around by him in the rear. um as he must give his right hand to get Voldemort back. So that's fun.
00:25:11
Speaker
They mention having killed Berk. Berk. Bertha. Bertha. Frank decides he should call the police as he overhears this. And the man says he hears Nagini and hisses.
00:25:24
Speaker
Frank can't tell what he's hissing. um And a giant snake slithers past Frank. It goes into the room towards the hissing voice, and he realizes that the man is talking to the snake.
00:25:38
Speaker
He says someone stands outside listening in, as Nagini has told Voldemort this, and Wormtail rushes to the door and invites Frank in. Frank limps in and threatens to call the police.
00:25:51
Speaker
Lord Voldemort's name is Given, and Wormtail turns the chair around. Frank sees what's sitting in it and screams. A flash of green and Frank dies.
00:26:02
Speaker
And Harry Potter wakes up with a start. what What a way to start off the chapter. We're starting to get darker and darker as things go along. I love this stuff, though. like I think she does this really well of like giving you this whole thing.
00:26:19
Speaker
And you're like enveloped and then it ends with and then Harry woke up and you're just like, oh, oh, this was a dream the whole time. Okay, cool. Got it. And that's that's where the fear. I think that's where people's fear of what if Harry Potter ended with and then Harry woke up in his cupboard under the stairs.
00:26:37
Speaker
That's where it all started. She started that that lack of trust and early on. Chapter 2, The Scar Harry wakes from the dream and his scar hurts.

Harry's Dilemma and Invitation

00:26:50
Speaker
He crosses to a mirror and tries to remember his dream. It comes back in pieces. He wonders who the old man was. He remembers them plodding and stares around his room.
00:27:01
Speaker
His school things lay scattered. He sits back on his bed and rubs his scar. The last time it hurt was because Voldemort was close by. The Dursleys have been telling people that he went to St. Brutus' Secure Center for Incurably Criminal Boys to cover up his weirdness.
00:27:20
Speaker
um We kind of get a small recap of the last three books about you know everything that's been happening. um And Harry thinks what Hermione's advice would be about his scar. And he realizes that she would tell him to tell Dumbledore.
00:27:34
Speaker
He thinks on it and thinks it minuscule, thinks that Dumbledore won't care that his scar is hurting. Lol. um He knows Ron would tell him it's probably nothing, and we have a real, like, angel demon on my shoulder moment.
00:27:49
Speaker
um First of all, Harry, i think we've we're four four books deep, enough to know maybe we should listen to Hermione and not Ron. Yeah. I'm just saying. You think we would have learned that after the events of the last three books, but no no. Harry hopes that he'll get to spend time at the borough soon, since he was planning to go there this summer.
00:28:13
Speaker
um And he realizes he should tell Sirius about the scar. So he writes him a letter. Harry now has his school things in his room due to threatening the Dursleys with Sirius coming to, you know, avenge him.
00:28:28
Speaker
Because, you know, in the last book, he literally ended with Harry telling Vernon, oh, yeah, by the way, my godfather is a serial killer. He's in jail. He's been in jail.
00:28:40
Speaker
Um... Harry sends the letter and gets dressed for breakfast. And that's how we end chapter two. Very short chapter. Most of it's a lot of recap, but the last three books.
00:28:50
Speaker
i I enjoy when books do this. I wish every book would do this of like, just a little recap. Especially if you're like me, like with the gap between Ledge and Chasm. It's like, I need just a little bit, little recap.
00:29:01
Speaker
and minute Like a previously on. Yeah, previously on Harry Potter. We're going to get that with the show, I bet. yeah I've been seeing all the clips of them filming. They've been filming. They're filming. There's nothing against the children.
00:29:13
Speaker
i think they're fantastically cast. They look like the characters. The boy who plays. But I will not watch it. No, the boy who's playing Harry looks cute. I'm like, okay, that's fine. The boy that's playing Dudley, okay.
00:29:25
Speaker
Yeah. And the casting. And the Dursleys. The casting's been fun. i just. I don't know. It's not been long enough since the movies. Come on, people. I won't get on this soapbox again. um If you've been listening, you've heard it before.
00:29:37
Speaker
Okay. I've heard it more than just on here. Yes. Hallie's sick of hearing it. Y'all are sick of hearing it. I'm sick of hearing myself. It's fine. Chapter three, The Invitation.
00:29:49
Speaker
um Harry joins the Dursleys for breakfast, and Dudley has come come home with bad marks and reports of bullying. shock or Shocker, shocker. He also had a note from the school nurse saying that Dudley needs a diet due to his health and that the uniform does not get any bigger.
00:30:07
Speaker
Rough times, my friend. um ah I'll get on the soapbox for half a second. From what I've seen of the behind-the-scenes photos, Dudley and Vernon do not look nearly, like, large enough.
00:30:22
Speaker
He's supposed be big boys. They're probably not gonna because they'd be like, oh, you're shaming. Yeah, the fat shaming. You're fat shaming. It's literally in the book, people. let's It's in the book.
00:30:34
Speaker
like They're going to change the book so much. and people It's going to literally be like it was with the moral instruments. Hey, guys, we know the movie didn't match the book very well, so we're going to make a show to match the book better. And then when the show actually comes out, we're actually going to have changed every single thing that was in the book and just give them the characters' names.
00:30:52
Speaker
Yeah, because me and Jen, because Jen and I were talking about it, and she said, she was talking about all this stuff, she says, I'm not watching it. No, I'm not. She's done boycotted it. Not either.
00:31:05
Speaker
Petunia put the whole house under a diet, but here he has hidden sweets under his floorboard. He got four birthday cakes for his birthday. ah Vernon answers the door and comes back super upset.
00:31:17
Speaker
He takes Harry out of the room and says a letter came for Harry from Molly Weasley. They want to take Harry to the Quidditch World Cup and they want him to stay with them for the rest of the summer.
00:31:30
Speaker
Vernon reveals to him the envelope and it is covered in stamps because they weren't sure how many stamps to use. That's so funny. Vernon is upset that the postman noticed and thought it was funny.
00:31:44
Speaker
Harry asks if he can go stay with the Weasleys. And you kind of see Vernon do a mental battle of, like, he wants rid of Harry, but he doesn't want to make Harry happy by saying, yes, you can go.
00:31:57
Speaker
but I'm also like... You can't stand Harry because of his weirdness. Now you have the opportunity to get rid of him for the summer and not deal with his weirdness. Why wouldn't you take that opportunity? Yes, but he knows that if he tells him yes, it's going to make Harry happy. And he's like, I definitely don't want to be the cause of his joy.
00:32:16
Speaker
so dumb. It's a mental battle. um Harry threatens to write serious about it and Vernon agrees to let Harry go. Um, he says they'll have to pick him up, though, because he will not be driving him all around creation to find Weasleys.
00:32:33
Speaker
And Harry heads to his room, very excited, to write Ron a letter. He comes in and finds a small owl buzzing around his room very excitedly. It carries the letter from Ron, and Ron's telling him about the cup and saying, we weren't sure if the letter came, like, we weren't sure if my stamps put on it.
00:32:50
Speaker
um And Ron reveals that the owl buzzing around Harry's room is his new owl named Pig. Oh, Pig. Harry calms the owl down and he writes a letter to Ron saying that he can go.
00:33:03
Speaker
He sends the letter for Sirius as well. And he crawls into his bed eats his birthday cake and feels no worries. I also love that Harry's been up for a total of, like, maybe 30 minutes and is already back in his room, back in his bed, eating birthday cake.
00:33:19
Speaker
He did not go downstairs for very long. It's still breakfast. And that's how we end chapter three. Very good. Lots of Harry sass. Yes. Harry threat. Harry threats. The gaslighting.
00:33:31
Speaker
I'll tell Sirius. Yeah. Chapter four, back to the burrow. Harry's trunk is packed, and the Dursleys are staying very alert, constantly looking out the window at every little motion, thinking it's the Weasleys.
00:33:45
Speaker
And he's the Dursleys are terrified they're going to show up in some sort of magical contraption. um Vernon warned Harry that they better look normal when they come to get him.
00:33:56
Speaker
And Harry wonders how they'll arrive. Because they've arrived several different ways before. And he's also a little nervous. They're running very late. And Vernon is very upset.
00:34:08
Speaker
Of course. Always.

Chaos with the Weasleys

00:34:10
Speaker
The Dursleys come flying out of the living room just then. And here he goes in to figure out what the hubbub's about. And here's the Weasleys stuck in the electric fireplace behind the brick wall.
00:34:24
Speaker
They had tried to use flue powder. Flue powder power. Flue powder power. Flue powder power. um And hears Ron ask if something's gone wrong.
00:34:36
Speaker
And the twins say, no Ron. We just thought we'd hang out in here for a bit.
00:34:43
Speaker
It cracks me up. um Arthur uses magic to burst through the brick, um causing an explosion throughout the living room. um Harry turns to see that Vernon is covered in dust, and Arthur promises to fix the fireplace.
00:34:59
Speaker
Fred and George go to get Harry's things from his room. um Dudley had ran upstairs to cower in his room, and Harry does make the note that Not so much did they want to help, but they want to see Dudley because they don't believe that he, like, that Harry, they think Harry's making him up.
00:35:17
Speaker
Arthur fantasizes over all the muggle things that are sitting around him and lights the fire and hands a Harry some flu powder. Fred and George drop some sweets, but gather them up really quick and and go through the fireplace.
00:35:33
Speaker
Only Harry and Arthur remain, and Arthur tells the Dursleys to tell Harry goodbye, because Harry literally says, all right, bye then, and, like, goes to leave. And I just love the, like, little scene of...
00:35:46
Speaker
Alright. Bye. And just leaving. And then Arthur's like, hold up, hold up. Tell him goodbye. You won't see him for, like, a long time. And it takes everything in them strain out a goodbye.
00:36:00
Speaker
I just imagine Vernon with, like, a cartoonish red face. Steam coming out of his ears. Goodbye. um Suddenly, Deadly is gagging on his tongue that's grown twice its size and is purple.
00:36:17
Speaker
but wonder who did that. Arthur says it was the twins' toffee that is charmed with an engorgement charm and tells Harry to leave and he'll take care of it.
00:36:28
Speaker
um then the dursley start freaking out whenever verner whenever arthur's trying to like help they're like freaking out that he's gonna use magic harry leaves with no troubles and heads to the burrow it's like okay bye as arthur fixes deadly he's like as i said bye um and that's how we end chapter four Lots of fun happening.
00:36:50
Speaker
Lots of Weasley chaos. I just love that they just come through the fireplace. Yes. I know. It's the most shocking entrance ever.

Life at the Burrow

00:37:00
Speaker
Chapter 5. My favorite.
00:37:02
Speaker
Weasley's wizard wheezes. When Harry arrives, Fred asks if Deadly ate the toffee he dropped, and Charlie and Bill are there at the burrow. We get to meet Charlie and Bill.
00:37:16
Speaker
Um, Harry tells him yes, and they get very excited. Arthur arrives and chastises Fred and George, saying that Dudley's tongue was practically dragging the ground by the time that he was able to fix it.
00:37:30
Speaker
Molly comes in and greets Harry, um, and Hermione and Jenny come in behind her. the trio and Jenny decide to head up to Ron's room as Molly begins...
00:37:41
Speaker
getting all over Fred and George for their magic and their little charms. Um, and they mentioned, Molly mentions, um, she doesn't want to hear any more about Weasley's wizard wheezes.
00:37:54
Speaker
So as they're heading up to Ron's room, Harry asks, what is Weasley's wizard wheezes? And Ron says that the twins are creating magical experiments and that Molly hates it.
00:38:05
Speaker
And that woman gray hairs. Percy sticks his head out of his room and is mad at them for talking very loudly as he is working on a report for the ministry. Very important. Ron mocks him, and Harry shuts his door.
00:38:19
Speaker
because ah Percy shuts his door. Ron's mocking him and is like, we wouldn't want you to upset your boyfriend kind of thing. um They enter Ron's room, and Pig is sitting in a cage acting very hyperactive.
00:38:34
Speaker
um Ron says that his full name is Pigwidgeon, and that he annoys Errol and Hermes, so he has to keep them in his room. Percy warns Harry not to mention, sorry, that's the wrong person.
00:38:50
Speaker
Ron warns Harry not to mention fudge around Percy, saying that him and Percy will announce their engagement any day now.
00:39:00
Speaker
um Ron nearly mentions Sirius, but holds off due to Jenny still being in the room. And they all go down for dinner, and mar Molly tells them that they'll eat outside. She fusses about Fred and George having no ambition, which I think is hilarious because they literally create an empire. They literally have the most successful business ever. They create a full empire.
00:39:23
Speaker
She says they'll end up in the improper use of magic office. um And goes to pick up her wand, thinking it's her wand, and it's a fake wand. And goes all limp, and she throws it across the room.
00:39:37
Speaker
They head outside and Crookshanks is chasing a gnome while Bill and Charlie battle each other with the floating tables in the garden. It's the Weasleys. They're all the same. Percy sticks his head out of his window and fusses at them to keep the noise down.
00:39:51
Speaker
By seven o'clock, the tables are full of food and Percy is telling Arthur all about his assignment for party crotch. The minister ministry is extra busy with the World Cup, and he complains that Ludo Backman being the head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports was a bad idea.
00:40:11
Speaker
um Arthur talks about how good Ludo is and how he got him that job, um and how Ludo got the Weasleys their tickets to the World Cup.
00:40:23
Speaker
Bertha Jorkins has been missing for over a month and Arthur claims some sort of paranoia about this, but Percy says it's fine. She's always getting lost and confused.
00:40:34
Speaker
um And keeps saying that Ludo keeps telling him that she gets lost often. He mentions having to set up two events, another right after the cup, and he mentions it being top secret at top volume.
00:40:51
Speaker
Not much of a secret. Ron says that Percy's been trying to get them to ask him about it all summer long, but they don't really want to give him the satisfaction. um Molly chastises Bill about his long hair and earring, and I'm like, Molly, I'm going to need you to leave him alone because the movie version of Bill very attractive and I can not blame anyone for their decisions.
00:41:17
Speaker
Love him. He's beautiful. um They all debate Ireland versus Bulgaria, which is going to be playing in the Wizarding World Cup. um And as they finish eating, Harry feels very full and very happy.
00:41:33
Speaker
Harry's always at his best when he's with the Weasleys. Ron asks him quietly about Sirius and Hermione listens in Harry says he's heard from him twice and that he's doing well.
00:41:45
Speaker
Molly sends everyone to bed so they can get up early and tells Harry that it she'll get all of their school stuff while they're gone if he gives her the list. Percy worries over the match, continuing for five days like the last one, and George teases about someone slipping dragon dung into Percy's work tray because Percy's whole worry is like,
00:42:05
Speaker
The work will stack up if I'm gone too long. So George mentioned someone slipping dragon dung in Percy's work tray last time. Percy says it was a fertilizer sample from Norway and says it was nothing personal against him.
00:42:19
Speaker
Fred whispers to Harry as they all stand, telling him it was personal because they sent it
00:42:26
Speaker
And that's how we hit chapter 5. read that and then I'm like, oh no. The twins. And that's pretty much the chapters today. theyre They were shorter chapters.
00:42:37
Speaker
um I hate to do more than 5 at once just because it's lot to read and absorb and discuss. um As we get further into the book, there's going to be a lot more to discuss. The first few chapters of a book are never that much. They're just opening.
00:42:51
Speaker
They kind of just set the tone. So we kind of have the opening for You know, setting up like, okay, we know that we're going to the Wizarding World Cup. We know that there's something happening right after the World Cup because Percy mentions it at this time. We don't know it's the Triwizard Tournament.
00:43:07
Speaker
We also know that Voldemort and them are planning something at the Quidditch World Cup that they're thinking that's their going to be time to strike. Lots of setup going on. We got lots of different and people being murdered.
00:43:21
Speaker
Well, and I forgot how early on Weasley Wizard Wheezes is mentioned because they don't drop out until next book. Yeah. Literally, the fireworks show is their exit.
00:43:33
Speaker
Well, and then that's when they start... They're like, peace out, suckas. That's when they start selling their stuff. I think they sell some stuff this book. but it's like it's big time in order the phoenix so i forgot it was this early on yeah um so it's interesting you kind of see the setup for where fred and george are kind of wanting to go we do get the beginnings of percy being a jerk and a butthead love hate him um yeah we get a real setup here for everything that's going on um
00:44:06
Speaker
And we kind of ended on a positive note.

Character Introductions and Plot Points

00:44:08
Speaker
The next chapters will not be positive. Several things about um But I do think it's funny too because when they mention Ginny coming in, there's like a bit of a recap with Harry realizing that Ginny had always had a crush on him.
00:44:23
Speaker
But there isn't that like cheek reddening moment this time. So this is kind of the first time that we see Ginny without being like, that You're Harry Potter.
00:44:35
Speaker
Oh, you're Harry Potter. The boy who lived. um So... It's interesting because this is kind of like the the middle point in the next book and Half-Blood Prince is when Harry's going like, hey, Ginny, what up?
00:44:52
Speaker
Come dance with me. I'm Harry Potter. I'm Harry freaking Potter. um So, yeah. It's going to get interesting. um I'm excited for this book. I i really enjoyed this book.
00:45:03
Speaker
This one's a good one. Yeah. We do have some new characters getting introduced. We have Nagini. So we haven't got to see Nagini before this. So we kind of but get that a small introduction of her, which is Voldemort the pet snake, who if you've watched Fantastic Beasts, you know that she was an anime guy.
00:45:23
Speaker
And eventually was going to get to the point where she couldn't shift back to human form anymore. Now, that is another thing i stay upset with the Fantastic Beasts series about.
00:45:34
Speaker
Is we almost do need... Why are we making a show about Harry Potter when we already have Harry Potter? Why are we not doing the middle ground? This is why we need the marauders.
00:45:45
Speaker
I need to know po at what point does she stop becoming human. We know that she escapes to the forests of Romania and that's how she finds him. Yeah. But how does that connection form?
00:46:00
Speaker
Exactly. How does she become a freaking horcrux? Exactly. There's so many unanswered questions and we open threads where you're like, we need something else.
00:46:13
Speaker
We need a Marauder story. We need a Tom Riddle. We need Tom Riddle story in the whole thing with the House of

Book vs. Movie Discussion

00:46:21
Speaker
Gaunt. Like, we need all that stuff.
00:46:23
Speaker
Because you really need, we really need the Marauders because it would really tie a lot of things together if you had Fantastic Beasts and And then you get House of Gaunt slash Marauders because you're also going to get the setup for why Regulus turned against him. And, you know, what went down with the Malfoys and the whole House of Black. Wormtail betraying them.
00:46:49
Speaker
Like, you're going to get so much background. And I, yeah, we do, you do almost need the House of Gaunt too because that's i that would be where you'd get your connection with Nagini. um But come on.
00:47:02
Speaker
Come on. We also have Frank Bryce. um He's a very short-lived character. He's muggle. Wrong place, wrong time. Doesn't really know what's going on. I wish he would have lasted a little bit longer because I think it could have been interesting to hear like him tell Harry about the riddles.
00:47:23
Speaker
Yeah. Because I think it would have prevented a lot of crap that goes down in Half-Bud Prince. Mm-hmm. Um, we have the introduction of two new Weasley brothers, Charlie and Bill. We kind of get a little bit of them in earlier books, but you don't directly meet them.
00:47:39
Speaker
You get explanation as to, like, where they're at, why they're not here. Yeah. And really, Bill's only briefly in this one. You're gonna get him more later on. Charlie, you get him a little bit more in this with the dragons, but, um...
00:47:53
Speaker
Kind of fun to meet other Weasleys. I feel like a lot of people forget about them because they're just not present a lot. Mm-hmm. Um, yeah. yeah Love Bill.
00:48:03
Speaker
Bill's my favorite. I'm actually so sad that they... That is one thing I think the movies did very poorly. Charlie's nowhere to be seen. Yeah. Why did we just decide to, like, forget about Charlie?
00:48:17
Speaker
So that was interesting. Um, all right. Favorite scenes from these chapters?

Favorite Scenes and Anticipations

00:48:25
Speaker
Definitely the Weasleys scaring the pants off the Dursleys. Oh yeah, for sure.
00:48:29
Speaker
And mine, I have to say, the whole first chapter. i love i love that. that The setup. The setup. That opening of the book. You're like, okay, this is the tone of the story. This is how we're going to go from now on.
00:48:43
Speaker
I like it. Yes, very good. And just the Weasleys in general. Fred and George just causing havoc. Always doing something. right.
00:48:53
Speaker
Hallie, would you like to give them our question the week? All right. So this week's question of the week is, what scene are you looking forward to most in Goblet of Fire?
00:49:05
Speaker
I don't know. The small part of me is like, I can't wait to do the, Harry, when did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire? Double door ask calmly. hurry did you put your nail in a gullet of fire a small part of me is very excited for that but then also i don't know i think my favorite task i would say the dragon i love the dragon scene i know we don't get it in the book but i'm gonna hear fred and george going well done dragon um also yule ball yep the drama between hermione and ron is about to ensue folks it's gonna get crazy yep what about you
00:49:45
Speaker
Um, I would definitely say the Yule Ball. Also, I would say probably the second task where they have to go in the water.
00:49:57
Speaker
It's just because it's so stressful, especially in the movie. Yeah. It's so stressful. I just love this book. I feel like this book is, like, the most we get to see of the Wizarding World because you get to meet two other schools.
00:50:10
Speaker
And I love Fleur Delacour. We need more wizarding schools. We need more stuff on wizarding schools. Yeah. I know Fleur drives Molly absolutely bonkers, but I love her.
00:50:24
Speaker
She's a good time. um Yeah, I think... This is just a good book. And this is the movie in which nobody, everyone decided, hey, let's let her hair grow out. Nobody cut your hair over the summer. Everyone has long hair.
00:50:39
Speaker
um feel like this is probably the least we'll see Draco, too. Yeah. He's not really hugely prevalent. I mean, he's in it but he's not. He's not a huge horse. He's not a huge antagonist on this one. really comes into it.
00:50:55
Speaker
I mean, he starts coming into it more with the next book and definitely and Half Book Prince is his time to shine. um But, yeah. I almost would love, like, a Draco POV from the ending of Goblet of Fire on.
00:51:10
Speaker
Because when Voldemort comes back... His dad gets arrested. Yeah, those conversations with um Lucius and Narcissa and eventually Bellatrix...
00:51:25
Speaker
And just the whole thing with half footprints. I just think it would be so interesting to get POV. And what he's going through. Yeah. Anyways. Looking forward to the rest of Goblet of Fire. It's going to be a good one.
00:51:39
Speaker
um Next week, we well, not next week. Next episode will be chapters 6 through 10. We will be posting a chapter reminder in case you forget. um But be sure to read chapters 6 through 10 for our next discussion.
00:51:53
