Speaker: It might be time to revisit old skills you've built in pottery, or maybe ideas as well. If you love pottery and want to take your skills to the next level, you're in the right place. Find your own pottery style right here on Shaping Your Pottery with Nick Torres. Let's get started. What is up, Shaping Nation? This is Nick Torres here. And something you may not know about me is that I like doing gymnastic base workout. And I don't mean the flips and stuff. Not yet, at least I'm not at that skill level.
Speaker: What I mean is the the body weight exercises or the calisthenic exercise that they do. Because gymnasts are extremely strong and they're at the peak of almost human physical strength, right? They're at that peak, they're super strong and I just really enjoy doing that.
Speaker: But I feel like I've been doing it for a while and I haven't made much progress or haven't made the progress that I wanted. So what I decided to do was I decided to go back into the basics, go back to pretty much to the very beginning, revisiting all the basic skills that maybe I missed or maybe that I need to pick up again. And when I did this.
Speaker: I started noticing a lot of weaknesses I had in my own body. Like, for example, my pull ups are pretty weak. My my balance is also pretty weak. I have mobility and I have some some more strength than I that i did. But I still had a lot of those weaknesses, but I would have figured that out if I didn't revisit the basic ideas. And now I know what I need to build up to get a little bit stronger to get to where I want to go.
Speaker: And the same thing with our pottery as well. Maybe you feel like a little stuck with your pottery a little bit. Maybe you feel like you're going through the motions a little bit. Maybe you feel like it's just not resonating with you at this moment. What if you just went back and decided to revisit some old pottery skills that you maybe did along the way? Let's say you slip cast right now.
Speaker: If you're a slipcaster, you probably got really comfortable doing slipcast work. And getting comfortable with slipcast work is definitely fine, but the thing with slipcast is that it becomes very predictable. You know what's going to come out, you know, it's gonna how it's going to look over and over and over again because it's a mold. And maybe the best thing for you is to go revisit some old skills that you did before. Maybe it's sculpting, maybe it's wheel throwing, maybe it's adding different types of texture. Whatever it may be, try revisiting these old skills. Now you don't have to spend much time on them if you don't want to, but if by revisiting old skills, new ideas begin to come up. Because we get so focused on trying new things that sometimes trying old things is the best way to go.
Speaker: We all have had these ideas in our pottery that we want to try out and then maybe it just doesn't work out. And that's completely fine, right? Pottery is one of those things where yeah it's kind of unpredictable sometimes and you don't know if it'll work out. And so you and you are also going to get bored and that's perfectly fine. But try revisiting those old skills that you built up. Maybe it's sculpting, maybe it's whatever it is that you're doing. Try revisiting those old skills with those old ideas.
Speaker: Because by doing that, you're actually going to get new ideas, you're going to build more skills to add to what you're currently doing. But again, the example earlier, if you do a slipcast work, if you're making in a simple slipcast mug, you could add old skills that you used before and apply that to your new skills as well.
Speaker: Because by going back and revisiting old skills, you get new ideas. You get to work on your weaknesses as well. Maybe you're not too good at handles. So go back to what you used to do when you were making hands before. Maybe that's a solution.
Speaker: By simply revisiting old ideas, revisiting old skills, this is going to help you progress your pottery even further and you're going to start making with more confidence. You're going to get new ideas. You're going to get new. You're going to get more excited again. And you're going to start making pottery that is truly your own simply by revisiting old ideas.
Speaker: You don't ever want to get stuck doing the same things over and over again. And a great way to counteract that is to literally just revisit old skills, old ideas, because I know you have some ideas in your head that just didn't work out.
Speaker: If you revisit those old ideas, you're going to learn so much because your skills have grown from when you first tried it. And it may even become a reality as well. And you can add and combine the new skills you've added with your old skills and make a beautiful masterpiece with your pottery. Hope you guys enjoyed this episode and I'll see you guys in the next one. Thanks for listening to this episode of Shaping Your Pottery.
