Hello everybody and welcome to a very special episode of Chatsunami. My name's Satsunami and joining me today is a well-known wrestler that you might have heard on the channel before. It is none other than the one and only, well, one of many stars but I like to consider him as the star of Acme Comic Con. It is Martin McAllister. Martin, welcome back to the show. Thank you for having me on. It's an absolute pleasure to be here and an absolute pleasure to be talking about our topic today.

Yeah, we actually did something a little bit different for this episode. So as you all may know, listening at home, we are building up to the beginning of Season 4 of Chatsunami. But in between, we thought, you know, rather than twiddle our thumbs, we better go out the house, we better actually do something. So for the first time ever, we took ourselves out and we decided to do an episode out in the field. And yeah, it was an experience, wasn't it?
Comic Con Evolution: From MCM to Acme

Yeah, it's something a bit different. It was Acme Comic Con this weekend. We both went last year. I think we spoke about it on the show before, but this was a chance to have a wee shot of on-the-site reporting. Because you and I, how long has it been since we've started going to Comic Cons in general? It has been years, hasn't it? Oh yeah, 20... I want to say like 17? 80?

Oh, I don't know where you're at in that because I'm forgetting we used to go to the refilming comic-con, which had a different name originally as well, which I forget. But yeah, that was along, yeah, maybe 2010. Oh my goodness. Sorry. I don't mean to age us up here.

Yeah this weekend as you said we went to Acme Comicon at the Glasgow SCC and I have to say it is always so nice to see it so busy because you know obviously during the 2020-2020

one, the Comic Con scene was very impacted for obvious reasons because of the lockdown wasn't it? So not many people were able to come out and enjoy. Yeah and it's one thing I think is really special about Acme Comic Con title is they're doing extremely Glasgow focused. It's very much Glaswegian companies that make up the Comic Con.

Not that any Comic Con doesn't do that, but you know the bigger Comic Cons certainly tend to get in bigger brands. Well, this is very much, it's like local artists that make up all the shops, you know, they've got local cosplayers and do the competitions and they've got, you know, local wrestling. And so it was a really ground up convention, which I think is really amazing then to get the support it does is brilliant.

Because before Acme Comicon, I think the year before it, or maybe before the pandemic, it was MCM, wasn't it, in Glasgow? And then they shifted the last year to Acme. I think Acme's like its own brand. Except for MCM, MCM, I don't know if they just don't run Glasgow anymore. I don't really know what the difference is, but yeah, there was definitely a gap in the market there for them. They knew they couldn't afford the fees for you wrestling there. So they just had to pull out and go back to London. Must have been must have been.

And of course that brings me on to a lovely segue, because as I said before, you and the amazing wrestlers of the Iron Girders gym were wrestling at Mecomicon and I have to say, it is probably the first Comic Con I've seen with a wrestling ring.

side of it. And it's not just inside of it. This is what's baffling. It's not just inside of it. It is right in the middle of the hall, which is so brilliant. I think it shows a real trust in what we bring to the table. It shows that people want to see us, and the organizers want people to see us. I think it's really cool. Yeah, we are right in the middle of the SEC hall. And yeah, I ain't got this gym. We were there both days. Lots of shows. So many different wrestlers were on. We got to do all sorts of amazing things. It was panels, meet and greets. People got their photos taken with the belt and things like that as well.

just an amazing time as I had a fantastic time. As you mentioned, we've been going to Comic Con for such a long time as fans, so to go in as a member of staff and to get to show what I'm best at on a stage like that is really incredible for me. And yeah, I can be Comic Con provided that space right in the middle of the hall. There are other conventions that do have wrestling, but I think Acme does it the best for us. Right in the middle of the hall, we had a smoke machine as well for entrances. Just a fantastic time.

Because I have to say, you cannot mistake the noise of the ring. That's what I was joking to you about before we started recording. My girlfriend and I, we went to Acme Comicon together and she was helping me with the interviews and things. And immediately, as soon as we walked in that room, all you heard was the thud of some poor wrestler just smacking against the ring. And I thought, yeah, they've got the wrestlers back, definitely.

And I mean, it must be an amazing experience for you as well, because after Matt, I did notice that there were a lot of, in particular, children, of course, with their parents, who are coming up to you and asking for photographs with you. Yeah, it's really nice. I think a lot of, especially younger people, don't know that there's other wrestling out there, apart from, you know, what they see on TV. So things like this Comic Con, you know, their parents are bringing them along and they all run about, want to see everything, and all of a sudden there's wrestling, they like wrestling, and they get to see these new wrestlers that they've never seen before. And it's not just children in that sense. I've had a huge uptick in

social media engagement literally just over the last two days in terms of people new people have been following me across social media so that's been really cool but yeah just that if people don't know it's there they can't find it so as soon as someone might be there for something else like oh wow there's rest on right here in Glasgow it's really cool when you especially for the younger kids who might have only ever seen it on telly to get right up

There's a big crossover. I think it's that if you become a wrestler you're usually into some obviously wrestling that self is kind of bonkers but usually into other sort of weird and wonderful things. Things like comics and anime seems to be pretty high up

Of course there was your one where you were dressed up as Ash Ketchum, there was Team Rocket there, there was someone who won dressed as Spider-Gwen, you know. There was all these amazing costumes because I remember last year was not like a huge cosplay match.

Yes so we kind of did that but we wanted to amp up again this year so we had a proper big scrap with it all. I do have a very quick segue to tell about this particular bit that's matched because it is a very fun story. The voice actor for Brock and a couple of other characters but in this case Brock from Pokemon was there at the convention as a guest and during the day he ran into our friend Kat

who was dressed as Officer Jenny. So they got chatting over that. Kat mentioned that she was with the wrestling and a few of us were going to be dressing up as Pokemon characters later. Needless to say, he actually watched that match. So he was filming a bunch of it. So I was dressed up as Ash Ketchum, hitting people in the face with a big snowlax toy in front of the guy that voices Brock.

for this show. I don't really have a punchline for that, it's really other than it's just such a weird set of words I just said in a row there. this one there. I think it was Levi's match where you started cheering them on but then everybody started cheering along with you and it was just like a wave of support. It was amazing to see that sense that nobody was bored, they were all really engaged, they were so supportive and it is just amazing to think that even if you're not into other bits of Comic Con and you're like a huge wrestling fan, that was one of the one things that you could say, oh yeah, I'm all for this.

The utter lunacy that comes with a Comic Con. Each Comic Con you ever go to, not one is the same. Acme is obviously special for ourselves at Iron Garden. Acme is probably one of the only cons that puts a wrestling ring in the middle of their con.

I used to cosplay a lot myself in fact, got involved with Comic Con's back years ago by hosting Cosplay Comps and etc just because I was a massive nerd but at the same time quite confident speaking so they'd be like, she'll talk, I was like okay. The spectacle that always comes with it, you see the amount of effort that people put into their costumes, but then you also see the amount of effort that actually goes into the Comic-Con itself. And then you had your, I don't know if you call it artist's alley,

people there and we actually got talking to quite a few stalls of course you were there when we went to the Scottish wildlife trust stall and they are doing some fantastic work raising money for preserving wildlife in Scotland they were doing absolutely fantastic there was also dogs trust I saw there as well there was a charity for cats

further along and when we ventured into Artis Alley there were two in particular that we talked to. We met an owner of Fox and a Shoe ran by one Jessica Campbell and she makes a whole lot of things like prints, stickers, pens and I even got a... and I know this is going to be a shock to you Martin, I got a Sonic sticker! Yeah I know! You got Sonic stuff at Comic Con!

And no, imagine, imagine my surprise. It's scandalous. But yeah, the designs there were absolutely fantastic. And the other person we talked to was Megan from Daily Dream, a sustainable clothing company. And she's also a Red Panda fan, which I think is what sparked the interview off, to be honest. When she saw my girlfriend and I, we both had the Chatsunami logo on our hoodie and she was like,

This is my second year at Acme with Dilly Dream but I used to attend myself as a cosplayer so I've been doing that since I was about 18. What kind of cosplays did you do?

So I was known for doing Shiaki Naname from Danganronpa. That was like my bread and butter. People would come looking for me for that. It's just sort of anything that takes my fancy. I've got one in the pipelines that's going to be like one of the old Barbies I used to have and stuff like that. Me and my partner used to do couples cosplays all the time as well.

So have you been to other Comicons before? Yeah, I actually have been doing them since. I'm not really quite sure, but it's definitely been if we include Covid years, it's been about eight years of me doing them now. So I used to do MCMs back in the day now and more mega cons and just all like little mini cons. So I do Ponycon as well in Nottingham, which near me. So that's really good. I'm doing that next weekend.

And what's your favourite thing about Comic-Con? My favourite thing about Comic-Con, honestly, it's probably talking with the other artists and getting to meet new artists because when you're kind of on a table with other artists, you end up making friends with your new neighbours, people behind you, and then you end up artist trade a lot and stuff like that. And it's just, honestly, between chatting to the artists and chatting to the customers, it's just really a nice experience. Everyone's happy to be at Comic-Con, so it's never like... Even when people have problems, it feels like Comic-Con can kind of take a lot of them away as well. I get a lot of people telling me their woes and them being just excited to be here anyway.

I know this one's kind of strange, but a lot of comic ones you go to, it would just be very much shops and guests, which there's nothing wrong with that. But I think Acme are trying to go for something a bit different. I just got a list of a couple of things that they had here. So when you walk in, there's like a whole bunch of different photo opportunities and stuff that I have. There are always ones you've got your photo taken with, but in particular, there's like the logo you get your photo taken with. But my favourite was the Barbie box, which I got my photo taken in with multiple different outfits.

There's various things you could get your photos with. There was like a kids area next to that. There was different stages. So there's like a main stage that was sponsored by Heart of the Radio Station, but there's also two different creator stages. They have like open mics and stuff. There's also like a gaming area and also the cosplay area. So like just a whole lot going on. So whenever I got any chance to go wonder about, those were the places I was going because there was so much going on at any one time. And so I just thought it was really cool just like that interactivity role.

Yeah, I have to say for the gaming area, I was glad they didn't try to pan it off as being like a retro gaming area. They were just like, yeah, it's a gaming area. You know, people are playing Super Smash Bros, Street Fighter, you know, all the ranges of generations of console, which was really cool to see. And tons of board games as well as a board games bit as well. You know, that really surprised me because as someone who, I mean, granted I'm trying to hide away the shame of not painting my models recently,

But yeah, you had the Batmobile as well. You had, and again, I posted quite a few of these pictures on the Chatsunami Instagram page as well of my red panda. Of course, me.

I think you and I can talk about that of course being the cosplays of Comic-Con and most of them were absolutely fantastic. It's something that I have to admit I do love about Comic-Con, seeing people just completely transform and feel so confident in themselves when they put on the cosplay.

There was one cosplayer though. I don't think I actually told you this at the time but when I was walking in with my partner we saw this dinosaur slumped against one of the pillars and I was sitting there and I thought oh that would actually be quite a funny photo opportunity and I thought oh

So then we're walking along artist alley, and all of a sudden, this person dressed in a triceratops life, and I was like, oh my god, that is not a statue. Because they were just so still. Oh yeah, so I'm glad I didn't just plop a red panda on top of all of them. I was that close, I'm not gonna lie, I was that close.

Well, I thought about Star Trek and then I completely forgot that there were a lot of Star Trek actors there. As far as I remember, I think there's three of them. There was one from Strange New Worlds, one from Star Trek Picard, and that's about no two from Strange New Worlds and one from Picard. And I remember seeing one person dressed as the character Boimler from Lower Decks. And I thought, oh, that would be a good one to say. And I was about to say it. And then all of a sudden the entire Starfleet

She came round the corner and I was like, yeah, I'm bankrupt. I actually saw that before we go on, do you want to explain the rules for this one? Real quick, I'll do my best. So the idea of the cosplay game, so it's called the cosplay stock market. And originally it used to be a game we played, it was like cosplay bingo and you'd try guess what cosplays you're going to see that day. But ultimately it became quite easy because you would pick the ones that you're guaranteed to see. So you're always going to see like a harlequin, you're always going to see like a joker.

because discuses are such great characters there's such an expanse of different versions of them. So the opposite of this is the game called the cosplay stock market and basically you want to try and guess a cosplay of which will only be one, that singular appearance of one character and you get more points at the end of the day if I've only seen one of that character but if you get four you get less points for example. So it's a really good game to try and figure out, obviously a lot of times you end up with zero spots because you know you pick some obscure character and you don't see them so you're allowed multiple choices what you have multiple choices so we usually do like three or five depending on how big the show is.

What is your favourite thing about Comic Cons? My favourite thing about Comic Cons, I have been coming since I was around 11 years old. When I was at school, I was bullied really, really, really badly and I cannot emphasize enough how badly I was treated at school by the other kids and I was quite a loner and my only thing that I really had was anime, manga and gaming and when I went to my first convention, I finally felt like I belonged somewhere. wasn't being called horrible names by people I was actually being praised for having a cool cosplay and enjoying the same things as people and I could finally relate to others who were around me and it was actually because of Comic-Con's that I was able to get into modelling because I used to cosplay and it gave me the confidence to model and because I modelled I've been really really really lucky in my opportunities I've got to be on front-grade magic scenes, I'm a wrestling interviewer, I get to host panels and yeah

If it wasn't for Comic-Cons I probably would be an extremely shy very introverted person who never understood my true beauty but because of Comic-Cons and the people that go to them I was able to understand that I'm not the ugly beast that the kids at school said I was and actually I'm just a little bit weird and that's okay.
