tommy cresta
Welcome back, everyone, to the Popcorn Podcast. I'm Tommy Cresta. On the other side of the screen is my co-host, Ryan Ferran, and today we are here to talk about the best and the worst films of 2024. And, uh, yeah, before we get into that, Ryan, how you doing?
00:00:16
Ryan
Wonderful.
00:00:18
tommy cresta
That's it.
00:00:19
Ryan
That's it. That's it. I'm doing fine. I'm doing fine. How about you, Tommy? How are you doing?
00:00:23
tommy cresta
Fucking terrible.
00:00:25
Ryan
Oh, God.
00:00:26
tommy cresta
I've been sick for the last two weeks.
00:00:29
Ryan
Is this still the motto?
00:00:30
tommy cresta
So it was the mono and then the mono went to a cold sore and I didn't know when you first get a cold sore that gets you really really sick So, I mean I was I had body aches I couldn't have light on I Mean I was struggling i would i did
00:00:37
Ryan
I mean, yeah, it's called a cold sore. You get a bad cold.
00:00:47
Ryan
Yeah, you got fucked up.

Tommy's Health and Setup

00:00:51
Ryan
You were supposed to go to the fucking smorgasbord with us. It's terrible. Oh my God, are we doing blue light glasses too?
00:00:51
tommy cresta
But um Yeah, I couldn't go
00:00:59
tommy cresta
my eyes are My eyes hurt.
00:01:00
Ryan
Where the hell did mine go?
00:01:04
Ryan
Can't find it. My desk is a fucking mess.
00:01:06
tommy cresta
Did you move your desk?
00:01:10
Ryan
A little while ago. Yeah.
00:01:13
tommy cresta
Where's your bed now?
00:01:14
Ryan
It's there.
00:01:16
tommy cresta
Oh, is it by the door?
00:01:17
Ryan
It's right there. No, it's against the wall. You know that little cutout?
00:01:19
tommy cresta
Oh, where it comes out a little bit. yeah Nice.
00:01:21
Ryan
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. It's right there.
00:01:25
Ryan
It's not the best setup. I kind of panic that I was like, I don't know. I got to change it up a little bit. And it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. But it works.
00:01:35
tommy cresta
ah It works, that's all that matters.
00:01:36
Ryan
Yeah, it works.
00:01:38
tommy cresta
But yeah, we are doing 10 best, five worst honorable mentions for best, and then we're doing ah disappointing, which doesn't mean that they have to be, per se, bad movies, they just could have not hit where we wanted them to go.
00:01:39
Ryan
All right. Grab my blue light glasses.
00:01:54
tommy cresta
So I think we should do
00:01:54
Ryan
Mm hmm.
00:01:57
tommy cresta
I think we should do disappointing worst and then 10 through two best honorable mentions in our number ones at the end.
00:02:04
Ryan
OK.
00:02:06
tommy cresta
Does that work for you?
00:02:07
Ryan
Yeah, that works.
00:02:09
tommy cresta
Okay. Do you want to, do you want to get started with your number one disappointment or your number three disappointing or all three?

Disappointing Films of 2024

00:02:16
tommy cresta
All right.
00:02:16
Ryan
All right.
00:02:16
tommy cresta
Whatever you want to.
00:02:17
Ryan
All three disappointing. Is that what we're doing?
00:02:19
tommy cresta
Well, how do you, you, you make the
00:02:20
Ryan
I can do all three. I mean, I feel like disappointing is and kind of just go one by one because there's not, you know, yeah, it's only three.
00:02:26
tommy cresta
It's only three.
00:02:28
Ryan
All right.
00:02:28
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:02:28
Ryan
So I'll start off my three most disappointing movies. Number three, I have Love Lies Bleeding, which I don't know why I had such high hopes for this movie. I just saw the trailer and I was like, that should be fun.
00:02:40
Ryan
And then I watched the movie and it was just, it wasn't awful. Like I'm not again, these aren't bad movies per se, but it was just fucking weird the entire time.
00:02:52
Ryan
especially the ending just kind of threw me off a lot. It wasn't an awful movie and I think the the actresses did wonderful, um but just didn't live up to what I was hoping it would be in a nice, you know, I thought I'd have it a ah nice, decent little like kind of action thriller movie to watch.
00:03:10
Ryan
on a cool summer night and it just was not that at all. Um, so number two, I have Maxine, the third movie in, uh, the X franchise.
00:03:20
tommy cresta
I forgot about Maxine.
00:03:22
Ryan
Yeah. That was just, I mean, just completely different from the first two, which mean you both love X and Pearl or some of her favorite movies of those respective years.
00:03:33
Ryan
Where do they come on the same?
00:03:33
tommy cresta
Yeah?
00:03:34
Ryan
No, they were a year after each other, but, um, yeah.
00:03:35
tommy cresta
No, they're they're all year apart.
00:03:38
Ryan
So love those first two movies. And then this one was just like a completely different movie. It was it was really weird. It didn't feel the same at all. Like, yeah, you had the same character of Maxine and Mia Goth was still doing a great job. But this movie was just fucking wacky. And I don't know if you want to call it a twist at the end to the villain was with her dad. It was just an odd fucking movie that I just I really was disappointed by considering how much I love the first two.
00:04:04
Ryan
um me got still got fucking she should have been at least nominated for an Oscar and for Pearl but uh my number one most disappointing movie and it's a movie that I want to be clear is disappointing from the get-go from the first announcements of it not from like oh the trailer looked decent it's Joker Joker 2 because like why the fuck would you do that yeah yeah they they shouldn't have made a sequel in the first place but
00:04:23
tommy cresta
I know where you're going with this, yep.
00:04:33
Ryan
I feel like there are things you could have done with the sequel that could have been cool. And they just didn't do any of those things. It's just, it's just wildly like, what were it was just for money. And it's so disappointing that they get away with that and just run off like bandits after just making a shit movie to a very good first movie shit sequel.
00:04:54
tommy cresta
I mean, terrible, terrible sequel. Damn, I forgot about Maxine.
00:04:58
Ryan
Yeah.
00:05:00
tommy cresta
That shows how disappointing it was.
00:05:02
Ryan
yeah
00:05:04
tommy cresta
mayam mine three My number three is Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
00:05:12
Ryan
Hmm.
00:05:13
tommy cresta
I thought this movie was going to be so much fun. Going into it. Guy Ritchie, rated R. Got some of the biggest Hollywood hunks out there right now. Henry Golding, ah Alan Richardson, Henry Cavill.
00:05:22
Ryan
Oh.
00:05:26
tommy cresta
You got all the boys to come in together. Isaac Gonzalez. And this movie was just not, it wasn't fun. I didn't have enough, I didn't have a good time with it. I stayed up really late to go see it and I had to go away with the army the next day.
00:05:39
tommy cresta
So I was like, this is gonna be good. It's gonna be a nice send off and it wasn't. It's too long, it's too boring, there's not enough action. And Alan Risson is wasted away by his character.
00:05:51
Ryan
Okay.
00:05:51
tommy cresta
So that is definitely my number three.
00:05:54
Ryan
Fair enough.
00:05:54
tommy cresta
Number two is Joker 2. Shouldn't never been made, should never been announced, should never happened. I should never had to sit through that movie. I should never had to sit through the worst third act ever.
00:06:06
Ryan
Hmm.
00:06:09
tommy cresta
God, that movie shouldn't have been made. But it's still not one of the worst movies of the year. I have five movies. I have definitely, six movies that are definitely worse than that. And my number one most disappointing movie of the year is Argyle.
00:06:20
tommy cresta
A movie I was so excited for. I love Matthew Vaughn. And this movie was just a flop.
00:06:26
Ryan
the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn.
00:06:29
tommy cresta
Twisted Mind, Matthew.
00:06:30
Ryan
He's very, he's such a twisted guy.
00:06:31
tommy cresta
ah
00:06:33
tommy cresta
ah Matthew Vaughn for the don't know who did Kick Ass and he's done the
00:06:39
Ryan
Kingsman.
00:06:39
tommy cresta
Kingsman movies, thank you. And I thought this movie's gonna follow kind of like the same vibe of those ones and just doesn't. It's way too over the top. Some of the CGI is god awful.
00:06:51
tommy cresta
Sam Rockwell tries his best to save this movie. And there's just nothing there. And then with the end to show Henry Cavill again, but really redneck version of it.
00:07:03
tommy cresta
I don't know. It was just, it was just a disappointing movie from beginning to end.
00:07:04
Ryan
Yeah.
00:07:07
Ryan
Bryce Dallas Howard was doing her best too, but just didn't, didn't work. I don't know.
00:07:15
tommy cresta
I don't know if it's her or if she just chooses bad movies.
00:07:15
Ryan
Odd movie.
00:07:18
tommy cresta
so
00:07:18
Ryan
Yeah. I don't think it's her cause she is a good actress. Like you look back at her like older stuff too. She's fucking great, but man, she's just on a cold streak and a half.
00:07:30
tommy cresta
Jurassic World Dominion, baby.
00:07:31
Ryan
Mm-hmm. All right.
00:07:34
tommy cresta
Damn.
00:07:34
Ryan
So what are we going to now? And then worst.
00:07:36
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:07:39
tommy cresta
And we can go, I feel like we can go. Do you want to do this one like back and forth?
00:07:44
Ryan
Yeah, we can do

Least Favorite Films

00:07:45
Ryan
that.
00:07:45
tommy cresta
ah
00:07:46
Ryan
All right. So number five, I want to be perfectly clear this year. I i didn't realize how many shit movies that I just skipped out on. It didn't watch. I want to be clear.
00:07:56
Ryan
I'm happy I did that because I don't like watching bad movies. So my number five is going to be rebel moon two.
00:08:04
tommy cresta
I forgot about Rebel Moon!
00:08:04
Ryan
I didn't watch Rebel Moon 2. I didn't watch Rebel Moon 2, but I won a shit on Rebel Moon, because that first one sucked so goddamn bad that I know this one's way worse.
00:08:12
tommy cresta
That came out this year, didn't it?
00:08:15
Ryan
Yeah, no, 2 came out this year. I think Rebel Moon was last year. It was like December last year.
00:08:18
tommy cresta
Was it?
00:08:19
Ryan
Yeah.
00:08:20
tommy cresta
ah Yeah, 23.
00:08:21
Ryan
Because I think that was my number one last year, or number two. It was bad.
00:08:26
tommy cresta
It was bad.
00:08:27
Ryan
It was very bad. and Yeah, so Rebel Moon 2, I didn't watch. But I know it would be on there. So that's there you go.
00:08:34
tommy cresta
You didn't watch Row Moon 2, Skargiver?
00:08:36
Ryan
Scar giver? No. are you going to watch You're probably gonna watch the rated R cuts when they come out.
00:08:40
tommy cresta
No.
00:08:42
Ryan
No, I know you will.
00:08:43
tommy cresta
Those movies, those are terrible.
00:08:43
Ryan
No, some fucking dork on Instagram is gonna be like, well, they're actually much, much better. They're actually really good. It's like a nine out of 10. You're gonna be like, well, maybe I'll give it a shot.
00:08:54
tommy cresta
It's not. Batman V Superman is better.
00:08:54
Ryan
Maybe it'll be like Batman v Superman good.
00:08:56
Ryan
Fuck off. No.
00:08:59
tommy cresta
It has a 66 instead of a 28.
00:09:03
Ryan
It's still not a good score.
00:09:05
tommy cresta
But it's better than 28.
00:09:08
Ryan
If you got a 66 on a test, you're going to be like, yes.
00:09:08
tommy cresta
Me?
00:09:11
tommy cresta
me Yes. Especially in high school now. Not so much, but in high school definitely.
00:09:17
Ryan
no
00:09:19
tommy cresta
Um, my number five worst movie of the year goes to the strangers chapter one, a movie that I think I just so much hopes with that I walked out. I was like, it wasn't actually that bad. I went back and saw it two days later and was like, wow, this might be one of the worst movies I've ever seen. So that shows you how bad this year had my five worst are terrible movies. I mean, there's four other movies I think are out there with the worst things I've ever seen.
00:09:44
tommy cresta
So yeah, the watcher, the strangers, Jesus, criminals. I don't know how you, you had the whole story laid out for you and you still messed it up.
00:09:55
Ryan
Jiminy crickets Yeah,
00:09:57
tommy cresta
Yeah, that was rough.
00:10:00
Ryan
that's another one I avoided Yeah, just like my number four and I have this on my list because I had to hear you talk about it for way too goddamn long It's the crow which I know is dogshit and I'm never gonna see it
00:10:02
tommy cresta
That's gonna bomb.
00:10:13
tommy cresta
How do you put Rebel Moon 2 better than The Crow?
00:10:18
Ryan
All right. A, I know it's bad. And B, I wanted to piss you off. So I put it at four because I don't like it and I don't want to watch it.
00:10:25
tommy cresta
There are worse movies than The Crow that came out this year.
00:10:28
Ryan
Okay. Womp womp. Fuck you. I know you liked it and I wanted to make you angry.
00:10:33
tommy cresta
It was acceptable. It wasn't good. It was acceptable.
00:10:35
Ryan
It was bad. It was disappointing. It was bad.
00:10:41
tommy cresta
It almost made my disappointment less.
00:10:43
Ryan
Yeah, of course.
00:10:47
tommy cresta
My number four is a movie, I don't wanna talk about it anymore. It's a movie that has a huge impact on my life, but it is a god-awful movie, and that is The Watchers, M. Night Shyamalan's daughter's directorial debut. Hey, she swung for the fences with this one. But the fact that I guessed a twist that was at their fairies in the first 15 minutes is a wild twist that I was able to figure out.
00:11:15
Ryan
Hmm.
00:11:16
tommy cresta
that I turned to Sam when i we went and saw, I was like, I think they're fairies. And she's like, what do you mean? I was like, trust. And then they're like, they they named like all these crazy names and like the fairy people.
00:11:27
tommy cresta
I was like, oh my God. And I still had like an hour left in the movie after that.
00:11:32
Ryan
Yeah.
00:11:32
tommy cresta
And it was terrible.
00:11:35
Ryan
Yeah.
00:11:35
tommy cresta
Terrible.
00:11:36
Ryan
Maybe, maybe stick to making music because she's good at that.
00:11:39
tommy cresta
A nice daughter?
00:11:41
Ryan
Yeah.
00:11:42
tommy cresta
Really?
00:11:43
Ryan
Yeah. She make that's she was in a trap. The concert that they go to and trap, that's her.
00:11:47
tommy cresta
Oh, really?
00:11:48
Ryan
Yeah. Cause she makes, yeah, she's an actual like pop star.
00:11:52
tommy cresta
Cool.
00:11:53
Ryan
Don't ask me a song. Cause you know, unfortunately I can't help you with that, but apparently she is good. So I'll give her the credit there.
00:11:59
tommy cresta
Don't give me apparently.
00:11:59
Ryan
Um, supposedly she is good.
00:12:04
tommy cresta
She can't be she's got be better than her dad.
00:12:05
Ryan
She's most likely very good. It's very talented. Um, fuck off. And then it's got some bad dude. M. Night makes a lot of shit movies now, but you can't say, dude, that run. Six cents unbreakable. And then it stopped for a little bit, but then he had like split was pretty good. I stopped a little bit, but he's got some good movies. Signs is pretty decent.
00:12:30
tommy cresta
Science is decent. The visit was his like comeback film.
00:12:34
Ryan
Yes.
00:12:35
tommy cresta
I'll give him that. But I don't know.
00:12:38
Ryan
Avatar, the last airbender.
00:12:40
tommy cresta
Not it.
00:12:42
Ryan
I remember when I saw that movie, I saw it when it came out, when I was a kid, I saw it with my dad. And I think the universe knew that it was bad because a hurricane, I was down the shore, Washington and Jersey, and a hurricane hit and we lost power in the movie theater. So we couldn't watch the movie. Like halfway through, the power just went out and I was like, all right, well, cool. um My number three is going to be a horrible movie.
00:13:11
Ryan
but one of my most entertaining movies of the year, and that is Madam Web. It's goddamn. I know a lot of people said this was not fun bad. I think it was amazing. I thought it was so fun bad. I loved every second of it because it was so, it was just the greatest dumpster fire I've ever seen in my life. It was so much fun to watch. It was so dogshit. The ADR is, I mean, it's kind of astounding. The acting was horrible.
00:13:40
Ryan
There's no redeeming qualities to this movie other than it was so bad that it I couldn't stop laughing half the time. So that's my number three, Madam Web. Fantastic movie.
00:13:52
tommy cresta
My number three is also Madam Web.
00:13:54
Ryan
Yeah.
00:13:55
tommy cresta
And I agree with the exact same reasons you didn't like it. I didn't like it. We talked about it when we did the review. It is, but it is so unbelievably bad that it's funny.
00:14:07
Ryan
Yeah.
00:14:08
tommy cresta
This is, I don't know how this movie got green lit. I don't know how it got through the editing room. I don't know how much money these actresses got paid, but it was not enough.
00:14:19
Ryan
No.
00:14:20
tommy cresta
make them suffer through this entire script. Sydney Sweeney is so underutilized in this movie.
00:14:29
tommy cresta
Isabella Markad is also extremely underused.
00:14:33
Ryan
Yeah.
00:14:33
tommy cresta
They use the two worst actresses out of the four. And yeah, I did not like this movie, but there is some really funny bad moments in that movie.
00:14:44
Ryan
ah it's Such a good movie.
00:14:44
tommy cresta
The spider people.
00:14:46
Ryan
Hmm.
00:14:46
tommy cresta
in the Amazon. It's one of the funniest scenes when they come out of the tree.
00:14:50
Ryan
Oh, yeah. We got to get hammered one night and just watch that again and just see how much funnier it is.
00:14:55
tommy cresta
We should drink and do the entire Sony villain universe.
00:14:59
Ryan
Oh, that would be wonderful.
00:15:02
tommy cresta
Binge throw it.
00:15:03
Ryan
All right. My number two worst movie of the year. It's Joker two. For a lot of the same reasons, I had it as my number one disappointing. It was just fucking bad.
00:15:14
Ryan
It was just a straight cash grab. And, you know, they obviously they kind of set it like. Before the movie came out, it was like, all right, this is obviously a cash grab. But then you're watching the movie and you're like, oh yeah, no, this is a cash grab. Like they didn't try to hide it at all. There's really nothing to it. And I mean, there's some moments in this movie that are good. I think like when, um, what was the name? Puddles.
00:15:37
Ryan
comes in at the courtroom and he's like, like, that seems good when he's just fucking around with him and just being the Joker, like just being a dickhead. But then everything, everything that they do well and like have him be the Joker and he's like kind of funny, but in a terrifying way.
00:15:52
Ryan
And then they just ruin it by making him Arthur Fleck again and just having him lose all of his confidence.
00:15:56
tommy cresta
Yeah, and then the end.
00:15:57
Ryan
It's just constant. Yeah. The end sucks. It's bad.
00:16:03
Ryan
The biggest thing with that movie is that they have decent moments where they could build upon and see him like gain his confidence as the Joker. But this movie hates the first movie and it's fans so much that they, the only thing they can do is say, no, fuck you. This guy's a loser. This guy is just like you. He's just like you watching on your parents bedroom. He's a fucking loser. Fuck you. He's a bad guy and he's a coward. That's all they do constantly. And it's just, it's so infuriating because they just, they could have done something cool and fun. Instead they had to make fun of their core audience.
00:16:37
tommy cresta
yeah and i inel Yeah.
00:16:37
Ryan
which I'm not a part of. i want to be I'm not that, I'm not a freak, but I shouldn't call them freaks. I'm gonna get shot, but um I'm gonna get married.
00:16:46
tommy cresta
You're gonna get John Lennon. Oh.
00:16:51
Ryan
Yeah, but ah no, this movie was fucking bad and just horrible on the fucking, what's the director's name? I can't even think now.
00:17:00
tommy cresta
Todd Phillips.
00:17:00
Ryan
Todd Phillips, yeah. I mean, but he's an asshole, so that's my number two, how about you?
00:17:07
tommy cresta
Mine over two is another asshole director, and I'm talking to you. Right down that lens, Francis Ford Coppola, you fucking dick. I want to kick you in the back of your knee. I hope you stepping gum every day.
00:17:24
tommy cresta
I hope you turn on your shower and it's ice cold every time. I hope you have no hot water. I hope you get bed bugs. I hope you nothing but the worst. I can't stand you. You made me sit through the worst movie of the year, I believed, until the number one, which I gave it to. But this movie is so bad that Ryan didn't even score your movie. He gave it a thumbs down. There wasn't even a number.
00:17:49
tommy cresta
Copa, you're an asshole. No one liked this movie. And if you said you did, you're a liar. This movie is terrible. Then the only redeeming quality of this entire trash fire waste of time was that I didn't have to watch the Eagles get absolutely dog walked by the Buccaneers. And that's the only upside to this. Copa, your daughter is a better director than you. And I hope someone tells you every day. I I can't stand you.
00:18:23
tommy cresta
That was my number two.
00:18:23
Ryan
Nice. Nice. So my number one is also megalopolis.
00:18:26
tommy cresta
yeah
00:18:27
Ryan
And um I think we have different reactions. I think you hated this way more than me. I thought it was funny bad, but not as funny bad as Madame Webb. So that's why it's higher on the worst list. um But like you said.
00:18:39
Ryan
God damn, this movie was fucking bad.
00:18:40
tommy cresta
he
00:18:42
Ryan
Oh my God, every little bit of it, it had no idea what it wanted to be.
00:18:42
tommy cresta
you
00:18:46
Ryan
Shit does not make any sense. They just throw things in and were like, yeah, that happened. Yeah, a fucking, a satellite crashed and killed half the city. You don't realize that. There's a one line where it's like, yeah, fucking 50,000 people died.
00:18:59
Ryan
Nobody acts like it. They never bring it up again. It just happens. And it's it's so God damn bad. Look at my boner.
00:19:07
tommy cresta
this one though It is it is the worst scene in film history
00:19:12
Ryan
Oh my God. I mean, it was hilarious, but Jesus. Oh, everybody that there's not a good performance. either Like, I don't know. I mean, I don't want to say the performances were awful, but it's just it's just because of the writing. They were so bad. Like, I think Adam Driver is Aubrey Plaza is a great actress. Chai is a good actor. the um I always forget her name, but masa but um Masande from Game of Thrones.
00:19:38
Ryan
I always forget her name every single time.
00:19:38
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:19:40
Ryan
She's great as an actress. They all fucking suck in this movie because the writing is that bad. There's not a redeeming quality to any of these characters. They all suck. I mean, Giancarlo Esposito, again, trying his best.
00:19:55
Ryan
There's nothing good. He just completely switches what he wants, what he does throughout the entire movie. It's so fucking bad. It's so horribly written. And I'm so happy that he lost all of his money making this piece of shit because he's such a pretentious douchebag douchebag.
00:20:11
Ryan
Now that, I mean, the funniest thing about this movie is that he gave it five stars on letterbox and said, I directed it. I think I did a good job. You didn't dickhead the best, the best letterbox review.
00:20:20
tommy cresta
You didn't. And and remember the best trailer.
00:20:24
Ryan
of this movie is just a half star that says megalopolis, more like mega cockles. That's the best one that perfectly sums up this movie. So that's my number one worst movie. It was just, it was just pretentious and fucking nothing.
00:20:38
Ryan
There was nothing to it the entire time.
00:20:41
tommy cresta
I agree.
00:20:43
Ryan
Yeah.
00:20:43
tommy cresta
I hope he drinks spoiled milk, too. I can't stand you, Copa.
00:20:47
Ryan
I hope all of his wine bottles break.
00:20:47
tommy cresta
I just closed the I hope so too. Cause you made a good wine company. The only good thing you- Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
00:20:52
Ryan
Yeah. I know he sold all of it. He sold all his vineyards.
00:20:55
tommy cresta
And now it's gone.
00:20:55
Ryan
Yeah.
00:20:56
tommy cresta
Cause you wanted to make this.
00:20:57
Ryan
Yep.
00:20:58
tommy cresta
but somehow it's still not my worst movie of the year. The worst movie of the year that I've seen is Afraid. The A.I. horror film starring John Chiu, Katherine Watterson, directed by Chris Welch. Who let the dude who directed American Pie and Twilight direct a horror movie? Because this was just a terrible decision. This film is, I mean, I think half this movie, the actors aren't in the same room when they're filming.
00:21:26
Ryan
Mm hmm.
00:21:27
tommy cresta
cause there's like you can see like around the characters they like cgied them but they all look cgied into this
00:21:45
tommy cresta
give up and just like, okay, I guess the AI wins. And they get in an AI car that the AI tells them to get into. And it's like, we can be a friends again. It's so terrible.
00:21:56
tommy cresta
I hate this movie. It was so bad. I went to an 11 o'clock showing at night because I was so bored and I was rather have sat and watch paint dry.
00:22:03
Ryan
Jesus.
00:22:05
tommy cresta
I would

Best Films of 2024

00:22:06
tommy cresta
have rather actually talked to Francis Ford Coppola than watch this movie.
00:22:06
Ryan
What
00:22:10
tommy cresta
But yeah, afraid was terrible.
00:22:13
Ryan
would you have said to him?
00:22:13
tommy cresta
It is. I would have said you're a pretentious dick, and I hate you. But your movie isn't as bad as this one, Coppola. But, with all that said, that is...
00:22:25
tommy cresta
I can officially say it's the worst movie I've ever watched from beginning to end.
00:22:25
Ryan
Nice.
00:22:31
tommy cresta
And I didn't think that would ever get passed by, um...
00:22:31
Ryan
nice
00:22:35
tommy cresta
Oh my god. Oh, The Room. I thought The Room would always be the worst thing I'd ever seen.
00:22:41
Ryan
which was Which one was that?
00:22:42
tommy cresta
Tommy, ah Tommy Wiseau.
00:22:44
Ryan
Oh, oh, yeah. It was worse than the room.
00:22:47
tommy cresta
Cause the room has funny bed in it.
00:22:50
Ryan
Yeah.
00:22:51
tommy cresta
There's no redeeming funny bed moment in afraid.
00:22:51
Ryan
OK. I got you.
00:22:54
tommy cresta
It makes you want to rip your eyes balls out.
00:22:56
Ryan
I understand.
00:22:57
tommy cresta
Oh, and half the film is AI. Like they use AI to like create things.
00:23:00
Ryan
Really?
00:23:01
tommy cresta
Yeah, it's terrible.
00:23:02
Ryan
Yeah.
00:23:03
tommy cresta
There's a three minute scene that I thought I was going to throw up cause it was so dizzy. Made me so dizzy. But yeah, with all that said, We're now moving on to our best movies of the year.
00:23:15
tommy cresta
And we'll go back and, well, no, you don't want, you want to do your honorable mentions right after, when you get down to the, right before you do your number one, cause you don't want to take away from the people who are waiting to hear that movie.
00:23:16
Ryan
Honorable mentions.
00:23:27
Ryan
Well, yeah, but the honorable mentions means they didn't even crack the top 10.
00:23:30
tommy cresta
That's what I'm saying. So you do like 10 through two and then you go, oh, and some honorable mentions before we get to our number one.
00:23:37
Ryan
Okay. All right, fine. If you want to do, all right, Mr. Watchmojo, I got you.
00:23:42
tommy cresta
That's what I'm saying. I feel like that's the way you're supposed to do it.
00:23:44
Ryan
Okay. That's fine.
00:23:46
tommy cresta
Do you wanna start?
00:23:46
Ryan
So number 10, number 10, my 10 bestest movie of the year.
00:23:48
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:23:52
Ryan
I have kingdom of the planet of the apes as a good movie.
00:23:54
tommy cresta
oh
00:23:56
Ryan
I mean, it's just, I love that trilogy so much. And this movie just, I mean, I'm not saying it was as good as those movies, but I think, I mean, as good as the second and third movie, I think I would put it above maybe um rise.
00:24:12
Ryan
But I mean, this was just a good movie. Like it it didn't skip a beat. It felt like it like it it really felt like a part of that universe. I felt like they, you know, the progression of how the apes would be in this world without humans and by themselves was just done really well. And the characters were good. I, I'm very excited to see where this goes in the future, especially with like how the, it ends with like the cliffhanger kind of, I mean, I just found the movie to be really good and kind of surprisingly good. Cause I thought.
00:24:41
Ryan
You know, in the back of my mind, I'm like, ah please don't be like a cash grab to just kind of add on to this perfect trilogy. But it really wasn't. And it I feel like it carried on the story very well in the, um, you know, all the stuff with Caesar and like how he's seen now thought that was done really well.
00:24:56
Ryan
So yeah, I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it was a great. Sequel and a, hopefully a good start to a great trilogy, great new trilogy.
00:25:04
tommy cresta
Yeah, i I did love the new one.
00:25:07
Ryan
Yeah.
00:25:08
tommy cresta
It was good.
00:25:10
Ryan
yeah
00:25:10
tommy cresta
Dude, there's so many this was the hardest I think it was like my top six were set like almost the whole year I had the same six.
00:25:18
Ryan
Yeah.
00:25:18
tommy cresta
But outside of that, like the seven through 10 and the three honorable mentions, that was the hardest I think it's been for me since we've been doing this.
00:25:23
Ryan
Hmm.
00:25:26
tommy cresta
There's so many movies I really enjoyed this year that I wanted. But I did eventually get my list done.
00:25:30
Ryan
Yeah.
00:25:32
tommy cresta
And my number 10 is David Leach's The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and amelia Emily Blunt. amelia I absolutely adored this movie. I think I saw it four times in theaters.
00:25:43
tommy cresta
It was just an absolute love letter to filmmaking and to stunt work. And Ryan Gosling is just the most charismatic dude. And the scene where he's tripping balls is so funny.
00:25:54
tommy cresta
um Winston Duke's hilarious when he does the scene when they're fighting and he yells, uh, fuck, what's his name? Oh, Daniel Day Lewis. It has to do with the Tomahawk.
00:26:04
Ryan
yeah
00:26:06
tommy cresta
There's just so many good like callbacks, like film and all that. And the fact that they set a world record with the canon role was really cool to watch them actually do it. And, but yeah, the whole movie was just so much fun.
00:26:16
tommy cresta
I love Ryan Gosling. And I think this is David Leach's best movie so far. I'm excited to see him continue to improve on his films.
00:26:24
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah, that's fair.
00:26:24
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:26:26
tommy cresta
I really like that movie.
00:26:26
Ryan
It's good number 10.
00:26:28
Ryan
I like that.
00:26:28
tommy cresta
Thank you.
00:26:29
Ryan
My number 10. Excuse me. My number nine. I'm eating candy.
00:26:34
tommy cresta
Hmm.
00:26:34
Ryan
I've Deadpool 3 Deadpool Wolverine as my number nine Listen, I understand a lot of real film people said this movie was just another Marvel movie in a lot of ways.
00:26:36
tommy cresta
Hmm.
00:26:46
Ryan
I Don't care. I Don't disagree, but I don't fucking care because I like Wolverine a lot and I like Deadpool a lot I think the first two Deadpool movies were great It was so cool seeing ah Hugh Jackman come back and just not skip a beat with his character and um The suit was great.
00:27:06
Ryan
Seeing all the all the Fox characters come back, I mean, there's so many great cameos in this and so many great characters. Emma Corin did a great job as whatever her name was, I kind of forgot already.
00:27:17
Ryan
That was my biggest disappointment in that movie, is that she was a little bit of a disappointing villain.
00:27:21
tommy cresta
Uh, Jessica Nova?
00:27:23
Ryan
What?
00:27:24
tommy cresta
Jessica Nova? Cassandra Nova.
00:27:26
Ryan
Cassandra Nova. Yeah, she was kind of a forgettable villain. but I mean, it's a Deadpool movie. You watch it for the entertainment, and I don't think it skipped out on anything. I think it was just as good as the first two, but it brought so much more and, you know, just a great, great time of a movie, especially if you like Marvel stuff, then, you know, this movie was great.
00:27:49
Ryan
So, yeah, it's my number nine.
00:27:52
tommy cresta
Yeah, that was a good number nine.
00:27:52
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
00:27:55
tommy cresta
ah My number nine is Alex Garland's Civil War.
00:27:55
Ryan
My turn.
00:28:00
tommy cresta
One of the...
00:28:01
Ryan
Nine buck.
00:28:02
tommy cresta
Nine. i And I love this movie. I mean, what did I see? I saw 66 movies as you. It was a lot to break down, but I loved this movie.
00:28:10
Ryan
There's a lot.
00:28:13
tommy cresta
And I just want to say, which is funny now that you're questioning where I have it listed on my list, after all the shit you gave this movie for so long.
00:28:24
Ryan
Yeah, I thought this movie is gonna be dog shit.
00:28:26
tommy cresta
And it has some of the, first of all, it has some of the best military choreography sound design ever. They used to not muffle the rounds like they do in all filmmaking.
00:28:37
tommy cresta
It was one of the best decisions.
00:28:37
Ryan
yeah
00:28:39
tommy cresta
It just makes it so much more heart racing. I thought the cast was great. Kaley Spaney just continues to prove that she is a star and this girl can, lead these big budget films and yeah I love Alex Garland I really hope he doesn't stop directing because I know they said he wants to focus on writing but man this dude because he's directing I know he's wrote 28 years wrote 28 years later but he did direct that new war movie that's coming out right yeah
00:28:56
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:07
Ryan
I think he did. Yeah. I'm pretty sure.
00:29:09
tommy cresta
So I hope he continues directing, because I think Alex Garland's an unbelievable director. I know Men hadn't had me and you hooked for a while, and I know the ending kind of left a sour taste with him, but this movie really got rid of any sour taste I had for Alex Garland, and Kirsten Dunst is fucking awesome.
00:29:19
Ryan
Yeah.
00:29:25
Ryan
yeah
00:29:29
tommy cresta
But yeah, I love this movie, and yeah, it's my number nine.
00:29:30
Ryan
Cool.
00:29:34
Ryan
Cool. My number eight is going to be dune two.
00:29:39
tommy cresta
wow
00:29:40
Ryan
Yeah, I know. I know. Listen, I want to be clear. If this was a very objective list, this would probably be higher. But as you know, I didn't love it as much as most people.
00:29:51
Ryan
So this is my list. Shut the fuck up. It's at number eight. um I mean. There's nothing I can really say as to why it's at number eight. It should be like top three, but this is my list again. So fuck you. I didn't love it as much as a lot of other people. And it's, it's one of those things. It's like, I can't really put it into words. It just wasn't as much for me. I just didn't love it as much as the first one, a lot, as much as a lot of other movies on my list. So yeah.
00:30:23
Ryan
It's a phenomenal movie. There's nothing bad I can really say about it, but number eight, sorry.
00:30:29
tommy cresta
I have nothing wrong with it being number 8. I was kind of nervous you weren't going to put it on your top 10.
00:30:31
Ryan
Yeah.
00:30:34
Ryan
I was, I almost as a joke had it as like number three honorable mention, but it, it had to be on the list.
00:30:40
tommy cresta
Just for the memes.
00:30:42
Ryan
Like realistically,
00:30:46
tommy cresta
No, I don't mind that being number 8. I'm having major top 10.
00:30:49
Ryan
somebody's going to scream at me.
00:30:51
tommy cresta
Yeah, someone is, but...
00:30:52
Ryan
Making fun of Joker fans due into at number eight.
00:30:56
tommy cresta
on On the day that everyone found out the need didn't get nominated for another Oscar. um My number eight is another 824 project. So 824 is two of my top of the three movies so far. And that is heretic starring Hugh Grant and Sophie Thatcher. This movie was so good. And it definitely I don't say trails off because it definitely would have been in my top three if maybe it was 10 minutes shorter.
00:31:24
tommy cresta
But it's still, even with that said, Hugh Grant gives one of my favorite performances of the year. Him as Mr. Reed, Connor Callback quoted it, I mean, perfectly. You wanna sit and have a cup of tea with him while you have a gun aimed at him.
00:31:37
tommy cresta
He's just, he's so nice and you wanna just hang out with him, but there's something just off. Like he says little lines, like he invites him inside, but as they're walking through the door, he makes the comments like, he's like, I have metal on my walls.
00:31:47
tommy cresta
And then they just keep walking. Like, what? Like, why would you say that?
00:31:51
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah.
00:31:52
tommy cresta
And he's just, I mean, he was perfect. I loved this movie and I've, I really want to watch it again, but it also has one of my top three scenes of the entire year in it.
00:32:03
tommy cresta
He does this five minute monologue in his chef's kiss.
00:32:03
Ryan
Okay.
00:32:09
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:32:09
Ryan
Yeah, that's, that's one that I kind of missed out on this year.
00:32:11
Ryan
I never went and saw that.
00:32:12
tommy cresta
Oh, and we got to tell everyone, we didn't get to see the brutalists cause I got really sick. We were supposed to see it.
00:32:16
Ryan
Yeah.
00:32:17
tommy cresta
So that, yeah.
00:32:17
Ryan
And I also woke up but sick that day.
00:32:20
tommy cresta
So. we
00:32:21
Ryan
My sickness went away rather quickly, but I was very sick to start the morning and I didn't want to go to the movies and sit there for four hours. So we didn't go.
00:32:30
tommy cresta
Hey, no judgment here.
00:32:32
Ryan
We will see it eventually. have to see it eventually.
00:32:34
tommy cresta
Oh, I do want to say it.
00:32:36
Ryan
It's monumental.
00:32:39
Ryan
Especially with ah what you saw what Brady Courbet said, Courbet said to do during the intermission, smoke some cigarettes and fuck.
00:32:43
tommy cresta
Oh, smoke some cigarettes, baby.
00:32:52
Ryan
Yeah.
00:32:52
tommy cresta
ah
00:32:52
Ryan
ah We will not be doing that ourselves, but if you would like to bring a significant other and do that, that's, you know, I'm not going to judge.
00:32:55
tommy cresta
I know, there's no smoking.
00:33:01
Ryan
So number seven is monkey man, a movie that I low key, low key forgot about until you sent me you know our list.
00:33:06
tommy cresta
Wow!
00:33:11
Ryan
But just thinking about that movie again, it was so much fun. Like it's, it's just a perfect like action kind of thriller. It was just such a fun movie and death Patel with his first directing bid.
00:33:22
Ryan
It just did great. Like I really didn't have many complaints from this movie, at least none that I can remember. Um, I think we said something like it should have been a little shorter, if I remember right.
00:33:34
tommy cresta
Yeah, it definitely, it definitely drags in that second act.
00:33:34
Ryan
I think we may have said that.
00:33:37
Ryan
Yeah, just just a little bit. But the like the first and third acts and the action scenes are fucking awesome. It's just so much fun to watch. And, um you know, that Patel's character.
00:33:49
Ryan
I'm getting his name. It's Patel, right?
00:33:50
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:33:51
Ryan
Yeah, I thought so. Um, he was fucking great. And the fact that he directed it and was first time directing, it was really, really great for that. Um, so yeah, I really enjoyed this movie and it's a movie again.
00:34:03
Ryan
And I kind of forgot about until I saw it on the list and I was like, I can't not put that on there. It was such a fun movie. She's so good. So yeah, that's my number seven monkey man.
00:34:14
Ryan
Highly recommend it.
00:34:15
tommy cresta
I think this is the most different our list I've ever been.
00:34:18
Ryan
Yeah.
00:34:19
tommy cresta
We haven't had a single overlap yet.
00:34:21
Ryan
Yeah. Cause you saw a lot of movies without me this year.
00:34:23
tommy cresta
Hey, I went to the movies a lot.
00:34:24
Ryan
You left me out a lot.
00:34:25
tommy cresta
Hey, you were down the shore end for a lot of the summer too.
00:34:26
Ryan
Yeah, I was.
00:34:27
tommy cresta
I don't want to get blamed for that half.
00:34:29
Ryan
I was. Yeah.
00:34:30
tommy cresta
And then, um. Yeah, my number seven, this movie I didn't even see in theaters. I just watched this. um My number seven is Saturday Night. This movie was so funny. It is so well done. It is just the craziest hour and 45 minute movie, whatever. It feels so short, but it is great. It is so heart pounding. Like you just want everything to work out for these guys because it's about the first episode of Saturday Night Live.
00:35:03
tommy cresta
um don't know Brian is Dan Aykroyd and oh my god Michael something Smith he plays the Riddler in Gotham he played Chevy Chase he was perfect he was absolutely hilarious those two were great I loved all the young it was like all the younger like people of Hollywood were in this movie and they were all playing like a
00:35:11
Ryan
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:35:26
Ryan
Yeah, I saw it was like Finn Wilfard, um, Gay Nolfini.
00:35:30
tommy cresta
The kid from ah No Hard Feelings was in it.
00:35:34
Ryan
No hard feelings.
00:35:35
tommy cresta
the one Jennifer Lawrence.
00:35:37
Ryan
Oh, yeah, yeah, Yeah.
00:35:37
tommy cresta
He was in it. He was like a main part of the movie.
00:35:40
Ryan
Hmm.
00:35:40
tommy cresta
I mean, it was just great. JK Simmons is hilarious. He's just a little dick. William is also great in this movie is super well written and it has the final five minutes are awesome.
00:35:57
tommy cresta
It's just another love letter to that to that whole franchise of Saturday Night Live. And I really enjoyed it and I really want to watch it again. Yeah, number seven Saturday night.
00:36:05
Ryan
Cool. All right. So my number six is going to be Nosferatu, which it seems like it didn't make your list.
00:36:13
tommy cresta
It did not.
00:36:14
Ryan
It didn't even make your most disappointing list, which is surprising.
00:36:17
tommy cresta
Cause when I rethought out, but so far none of the movies you've said have made my list.
00:36:23
Ryan
Yeah, that's.
00:36:24
tommy cresta
I don't think so. Oh no, one of them did.
00:36:26
Ryan
Well, ah yeah, one of them must have.
00:36:27
tommy cresta
One of one them made my list.
00:36:29
Ryan
Um, yeah, but Nosferatu, I thought, I definitely liked it more than you, especially when we came out of the theater and you gave it, you gave it like a 60 something out of the theater. That was ridiculous.
00:36:39
tommy cresta
Hey, we changed. We we had a change of heart. We're just, we're a little disappointed.
00:36:42
Ryan
Yes.
00:36:45
Ryan
um I still think that the story is just kind of a little bit weak to begin with.
00:36:45
tommy cresta
I was wrong.
00:36:53
Ryan
Like I just I just think it's kind of, you know, somewhat boring story, and they tried to make it a little cooler and you know add more shit to it, which I think worked in a lot of respects and didn't work in some respects, but The acting and the directing and the set, it just all the production of this movie is what carries it through and through.
00:37:10
Ryan
Everybody's given a phenomenal performance. Lily Rose Depp, who I was nervous about, did a great job. Nicholas Holt was great. Um, obviously fucking, um, oh my God.
00:37:22
tommy cresta
bill ah gun I until ah he came out and explained why he did it.
00:37:22
Ryan
Skarsgard. Yeah. Bill Skarsgard was phenomenal. And I don't, I don't mind the makeup or the, I don't mind the look of Nosferatu at all. I know you hated it, but the mustache and the hair.
00:37:34
Ryan
Yeah, it actually looks like a person and not a fucking alien.
00:37:34
tommy cresta
That made more sense. Yeah.
00:37:37
Ryan
like It didn't look like he came out of a fucking wormhole. He looks like a real dude.
00:37:41
tommy cresta
That movie's so scary. I don't care what anyone says.
00:37:45
Ryan
Um, but yeah, this movie was just from a production standpoint, from like a, you know, an artistic standpoint. It was phenomenal. It was so well done in so many respects. So I had to put it on there at a number six, because I didn't love it. I didn't, ah my biggest gripe with the movie is just the story, but I can't hold that against, um, what's his name. I'm forgetting every name today.
00:38:08
tommy cresta
ah Robert Eggers?
00:38:09
Ryan
Yeah, Eggers, because, you know, he adapted the story that I kind of found already kind of boring. So I can't hold that against him at all. But yeah, good movie. Number six.
00:38:20
tommy cresta
I like that choice. my ah My number six is another horror movie owned by Neon. And this is Long Legs, a movie that I mean. I was super excited from from the time it got announced to the first trailer to those cryptic.
00:38:34
tommy cresta
I remember we did it on the podcast. I remember like the posters came out and they all had like one word, like a one sentence explanation.
00:38:40
Ryan
yeah Yeah.
00:38:41
tommy cresta
All of that just had me super excited to watch the movie. And then I love Mika Monroe. I loved um Oscar Perkins was fantastic directing.
00:38:51
tommy cresta
I'm super excited to see the monkey, which is complete opposite side of the spectrum.
00:38:54
Ryan
Oh yeah, dude. That movie looks like so much fun.
00:38:56
tommy cresta
but That movie is going to be a blast. And I think Nicholas Cage is just so weird in this movie and so made me so uncomfortable. And getting to see us the opening night with my mom and just watching her morph a metal popcorn bucket, because of how scared she was of this movie.
00:39:12
tommy cresta
It was just, it was a lot of fun. And I, I mean, I love that every time when saw it, I found another one of the demons in the background, because there's just so many of them.
00:39:21
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah.
00:39:24
tommy cresta
But yeah, I i really loved Long Lakes.
00:39:27
Ryan
All right. Real quick. Are we recording?
00:39:30
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:39:31
Ryan
OK, I can't I guess I just can't see the time. Sorry to break the break the flow there for a bit.
00:39:34
tommy cresta
Oh.
00:39:36
Ryan
But I was like, there's no fucking way that we've been talking for like 45 minutes.
00:39:37
tommy cresta
There you go. No, we. We are at 39 minutes and 42 seconds.
00:39:43
Ryan
Okay, good. I just couldn't see the time and it scared me for a second.
00:39:46
tommy cresta
Yeah, no, we're good.
00:39:47
Ryan
But number five, long legs.
00:39:50
tommy cresta
Oh, there we go.
00:39:51
Ryan
Thought it was good. Yeah, it was pretty good.
00:39:52
tommy cresta
ah
00:39:53
Ryan
um Like you said, everybody was great. Mickey Monroe, great fucking Nicholas Cage. So fun.
00:40:04
Ryan
Osgood Perkins did a great job. Like you said, I'm super excited for the monkey. That just looks like so much fun. um But ah yeah, I think you kinda did pretty well explaining it.
00:40:16
Ryan
It's just a good movie. Trying to like see the devil in the background of so many scenes and just like, you finally catch it and you're like, oh fuck, that was creepy as hell. It was good. and It was like the first horror movie I ever saw by myself in a theater.
00:40:28
tommy cresta
Yeah, because we didn't see it together.
00:40:30
Ryan
Yeah, and I watched it and there was just a guy, it was was like me and like two dudes sitting separately in front of me. And I was in that row, like the back row and then there's like,
00:40:41
Ryan
two seats like kind of in the back against the wall you know what I'm talking about dude there was just one guy behind me sitting in a corner and every once in a while he would just get up and leave for like five minutes and then come back like just he did it like five times I was like this dude is going to kill me like this guy because you had told me the story of how they found an actual serial killer watching the movie I'm like fuck dude I'm gonna get stabbed in this goddamn movie
00:40:43
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:41:01
tommy cresta
Yeah, they found the dude in the theater.
00:41:08
Ryan
As soon as it ended, I stood up and he wasn't there and I just booked it out of there. I didn't wait for anything.
00:41:15
Ryan
Yeah, but a good movie. That was my, what's your number five?
00:41:17
tommy cresta
Yeah. ah My number five, very different from Long Legs, is Inside Out 2, which I loved. I mean, I loved this movie. Had me tearing up at the end.
00:41:30
tommy cresta
It was ah did a great job. Everyone who's grown up and went through puberty and went through seasonal depression or anything that knows these feelings of this movie and has been through these very similar experiences. If you traveled with a baseball ah any sports team or anything like that, you know this exact story. And I don't know, if it hit very close to home with me, I really enjoyed it. I think it did everything that the first one did, but better. And I really loved the first one. So this was the...
00:41:59
tommy cresta
um This is the first animated movie I think that's made my list ever when we've done this. I remember the Boy and the Herring got honorable mention, but...
00:42:05
Ryan
Yeah, I think so. Uh, did spiderman get on there last year?
00:42:10
tommy cresta
Mm-mm.
00:42:11
Ryan
No.
00:42:11
tommy cresta
No.
00:42:12
Ryan
All right. Fair enough.
00:42:13
tommy cresta
Uh, it might've.
00:42:15
Ryan
It might. I know it was on my list, but I don't know.
00:42:15
tommy cresta
Maybe. Yeah, I know the Boy and the Herring just missed it last year, which I did love.
00:42:19
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah.
00:42:21
tommy cresta
But yeah, inside out too.
00:42:22
Ryan
And shout out Riley. We are hockey guys now.
00:42:25
tommy cresta
Wait, don't say we are now hockey.
00:42:25
Ryan
I am now, I am now a hockey guy. Go flyers, hook the devils.
00:42:29
tommy cresta
I am a huge hockey fan.
00:42:30
Ryan
You're a hockey guy, i am a I am now a hockey guy.
00:42:31
tommy cresta
New coming hockey guy.
00:42:33
Ryan
But you can't call me a bandwagon because the Flyers are dog shit right now.
00:42:36
tommy cresta
Whoa, whoa, flies on a six game winning streak right now.
00:42:37
Ryan
All right, the Flyers are decent.
00:42:39
tommy cresta
They're on it. They're on a tear.
00:42:40
Ryan
at At this exact moment, the Flyers are amazing. But season-wise, the Flyers are mid as shit, dude.
00:42:43
tommy cresta
At this. exactly We are there two points out of a playoff spot.
00:42:49
Ryan
Yeah, rebuild here.
00:42:50
tommy cresta
Hey, Qatar, got the change the entire seasons.
00:42:51
Ryan
Sorry.
00:42:53
tommy cresta
It's been since he came to Philly.
00:42:55
Ryan
Yeah.
00:42:55
tommy cresta
They've been red hot.
00:42:56
Ryan
Oh, yeah.
00:42:57
tommy cresta
But yeah, big hockey guy.
00:42:58
Ryan
Fuck cutter.
00:42:59
tommy cresta
Yeah, fuck Qatar, got the.
00:43:00
Ryan
Yeah, I am now a big hockey guy, too.
00:43:00
tommy cresta
oh
00:43:02
Ryan
So ah Riley.
00:43:02
tommy cresta
What is your number four? I know you're gonna hate my number four.
00:43:06
Ryan
My number, I'm i'm probably.
00:43:07
tommy cresta
You're gonna hate my number four, you're gonna hate my number two.
00:43:09
Ryan
OK, my number four is Civil War. So I have that in number four.
00:43:13
tommy cresta
Wow, that felt that fell from one to four?
00:43:17
Ryan
Saw some good movies, dude.
00:43:17
tommy cresta
I mean, it was your number one movie for a while.
00:43:19
Ryan
It was, because you know there wasn't a ton. But then you know I watched some of the ones that I was like, no, I'll catch up on that later. And they ended up being amazing. So Civil War, you talked about it earlier.
00:43:32
Ryan
Alex Carlin is a great director. And with like the gunshots and stuff, I'm not military, but you said it. And I feel like a lot of people said it. It's very realistic in how they talk and how they act.
00:43:44
Ryan
It's just good. and it's you know I felt that it did kind of stay. like it It wasn't super political, you know what i mean which was good. That was kind of a worry that I had, was that I'm going to be watching it. like No matter what side they chose, I'm like, jeez, shut the fuck up. Stop preaching. But it really didn't feel like that to me.
00:44:00
Ryan
so Just a good, fun, solid movie. I don't know if fun's the right word, but just a solid movie.
00:44:06
tommy cresta
It was definitely, I get it, it was fun.
00:44:08
Ryan
There's a lot of fun parts, but then there's a lot of like, fuck.
00:44:11
tommy cresta
Really fucked up scenes.
00:44:12
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah. So, uh, good movie. Highly recommend it. I love the ending too.
00:44:19
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:44:19
Ryan
So yeah, good movie. What's your number four?
00:44:23
tommy cresta
My number four is Wicked. I loved Wicked. And I liked it every time more ah every time I saw it, I liked it more and more. And Wicked just got nominated for the second most Oscars, because somehow, in some fucking wild way, Amelia Prez got 13 Academy Award nominations.
00:44:41
tommy cresta
Wicked got 10, so. But I'm gonna stand up with my thoughts on all.
00:44:46
Ryan
Just hiding while you say that, but it's fine.
00:44:48
tommy cresta
Amelia Press has nothing to do with the story of it is a poorly made movie is why I think the way I think about I don't think the director just did a poor job making the project and the studio everything around it Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez tried their best ah Wicked on the other hand great production design the fact that all that is really there they built the real train they planted millions of flowers they built these places it's just
00:44:52
Ryan
Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
00:45:15
tommy cresta
great production and are on a grande and Cynthia Ervo to sing live which only that in tick tick boom the only movies to do it in the last five years which is a such a huge thing to do and I don't know I just absolutely loved every aspects movie I like the music I like musicals so it's not for I guess it's not for everyone and this movie just I think it was a very good interpretation of the story and I'm excited for part two yeah so wicked
00:45:40
Ryan
Yeah. I got you. I'm not a huge musical guy, so that's not why it's on there.
00:45:45
tommy cresta
I know what.
00:45:47
Ryan
But i don't know that didn't make me mad. i didn't I didn't hate Wicked. It's just not my thing.
00:45:50
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:45:51
Ryan
You know what I'm saying? Um, my number three might surprise you. That's my number three to Nora. Yeah. Yeah.
00:46:02
Ryan
It's a very good movie. One of the ones that I was like, I'll catch up on it later. It's not really grabbing me.
00:46:06
tommy cresta
And it was just so fucking good.
00:46:08
Ryan
And it was just like, this is the best movie fucking of the year.
00:46:09
tommy cresta
yeah
00:46:10
Ryan
I'm like, all right, I should probably watch this. um And it was it was it was phenomenal. um Usually those types of like kind of sexy movies wouldn't grab me. It's just not my thing.
00:46:21
Ryan
But this was very much not that in a lot of ways. Obviously, in a lot of ways, it was.
00:46:25
tommy cresta
Like, it's very sex-driven, but it's not a sexy move.
00:46:26
Ryan
But
00:46:27
tommy cresta
Like, it doesn't...
00:46:28
Ryan
Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
00:46:29
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:46:29
Ryan
It's not a romance movie. It's yeah. So it was a, it was very good.
00:46:31
tommy cresta
Mm-mm.
00:46:33
Ryan
Um, I really, really liked it. And I got to catch up on some Sean Baker now. Cause I haven't seen like Florida project or red rocket or any of that.
00:46:40
tommy cresta
Wait, you haven't seen any of those?
00:46:40
Ryan
So I don't think I've seen any of his movies.
00:46:44
tommy cresta
Dude, Flarger Project is unbelievable.
00:46:46
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah.
00:46:47
tommy cresta
And it's filmed all on the phone.
00:46:47
Ryan
So I, I, yeah, I really got to catch up on that. So, um, uh, Nora was great. The acting was great. Mickey Madsen or Mikey Madsen did great. Um,
00:46:59
tommy cresta
You're up.
00:46:59
Ryan
I mean, yeah, Yuri or yora whatever, Borisov, fucking, you just said he got nominated for, I assume i assume supporting.
00:47:05
tommy cresta
Yeah, you got nominated. Yep.
00:47:08
Ryan
um I, what a fucking guy. I mean, talk about characters. That is one of the best characters I've ever seen. What a nice dude. Oh, and the end of that movie just made me like, it's a sad ending, but it made me happy.
00:47:21
tommy cresta
But it's the best ending that you needed.
00:47:22
Ryan
Yeah. It's the best ending possible. Cause you get the ego or just like being eager or just being the man. And, uh, any kind of finally, you know, it catches up to her a little bit.
00:47:33
Ryan
So. The ending was great, the whole movie was great, the acting was great, when she finally unloads on the parents. Oh, it felt so good.
00:47:41
tommy cresta
yeah
00:47:42
Ryan
The dad just starts cracking up. Yeah, no, I mean, it was really, really good. And everything kind of felt real. Like it's obviously a very outlandish story that she finds this fucking super wealthy kid and and you know all that.
00:47:54
Ryan
It's a crazy story. But then when you actually see the characters, everything feels real. Like they they don't feel super cartoonish. It doesn't feel like, oh, these you know kind of mobster guys.
00:48:03
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:48:03
Ryan
They weren't mobster guys. But you know what I mean?
00:48:04
tommy cresta
Uh huh.
00:48:05
Ryan
It doesn't feel like that. they They all feel like real people. And then the parents come. And they feel real as as much of assholes as the mom was. as It feels like she's a real person. So yeah, really good movie.
00:48:16
Ryan
I really liked it.
00:48:18
tommy cresta
Yeah, my number three is also in Nora.
00:48:21
Ryan
Oh, okay.
00:48:22
tommy cresta
ah Ryan said it pretty well. This movie was just a movie that i I mean, I wanted to see it from the first trailer because the first trailer that I saw was during it was during long legs. The first I think the first week of which cuts neon as well.
00:48:31
Ryan
Yeah. yeah
00:48:34
tommy cresta
And I mean, that first trailer it's super short and it just shows like some like quick ah b-roll but then it shows uh it's the scene where she's like did you get the milk she's like do you see any fucking milk and i was like oh i was like i'm so down for this movie like just that simple short scene and i was i was already invested and i mean sean baker is one of the best directors now like he this dude's gonna have I think Red Rocket was not nominated for Best Picture, but Flutter Project was, and this is.
00:49:03
tommy cresta
So he's two for three in Best Picture nomination on three films, which is absolutely unbelievable. And they're all great.
00:49:09
Ryan
yeah
00:49:10
tommy cresta
And the way he writes characters and every story is so different. Flutter Project's about a run down motel. Red Rock's about a failed porn star. This one's about a stripper falling in love, quote unquote, falling in love.
00:49:24
tommy cresta
um with a Russian mobster guy. it They're all wild stories. And the fact that he makes them feel so real is so unbelievable. So yeah, I love the Nora.
00:49:36
tommy cresta
And I'm excited to see what Mikey Madison does next because it's a real shame that she's not going to win the Oscar because she's just too young.
00:49:42
Ryan
Mm hmm. Yeah.
00:49:45
tommy cresta
But I love Mikey Madison as much as me as we were to her after Scream 5, where we just referred her as a bitch.
00:49:50
Ryan
Yeah, as bitchface.
00:49:51
tommy cresta
She is unbelievable in this movie.
00:49:53
Ryan
Yeah.
00:49:55
Ryan
Yeah, no, she was she was really great.
00:49:55
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:49:57
Ryan
The accent, too, is hilarious.
00:49:58
tommy cresta
I'm shocked.
00:49:59
Ryan
I love the the interview.
00:49:59
tommy cresta
It's no funny.
00:50:00
Ryan
I've seen that like interview clip because it was just the ad for the movie for a while of them talking about like how she got the accent, just hanging out with like Brooklyn girls.
00:50:08
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:50:09
Ryan
She's like, yeah, they fucking make her crazy. She's funny. um My number two is going to be kneecap. It's the Irish movie.
00:50:19
tommy cresta
Okay, that's that's the Irish one.
00:50:20
Ryan
it's That's the one. Yeah, that's where it is. um Another movie that I was like, I had heard about, and I remember seeing the trailers and I really wanted to see it in theaters, but it was it was such a limited release in the States.
00:50:32
Ryan
So it was only playing, I was down the shore and it was only playing at a theater. It was only it it had like two showings at a theater that was like 30 miles away. And I was like, well, not gonna waste my time on that.
00:50:44
Ryan
um But I was super excited for it. And then you know I didn't get a chance to see it and I didn't want to drive that far. So I just kind of waited. And then fucking two weeks ago, I was ah just saw that it was on Netflix and I was like, oh shit, I could watch that right now at 11 o'clock at night. And I didn't get tired a single second. It was so much fun all the way through. Such a fun movie. The music.
00:51:09
Ryan
You can't understand half of it because it's in Gaelic, but it's still fun. It's still fun to watch. I mean, half the movies in Gaelic, but it was just a, it was a really great time and it kind of teaches you a lot about Irish history, um, North of Ireland ish history. And, uh, yeah, I just thought it was a really fun movie that, you know, it it was super cool seeing that they were the actual guys too. Cause I didn't know that even from the trailer, I i had no idea that that was the actual crew who was acting.
00:51:36
Ryan
And they all did a phenomenal job the writing the acting. It was great. Um, so yeah, that's my second favorite movie of the year. It was very fun.
00:51:43
tommy cresta
Hmm Yeah,
00:51:44
Ryan
Recommend it to anybody. Cause it's just, it's not that long. It's like an hour 45. It's on Netflix. It's just a fun drug music movie. It's a good time. It's probably better than better man too.
00:51:56
Ryan
If I had to take a wild guess.
00:51:58
tommy cresta
I do want to see better man because it is getting unbelievable reviews. It's just It's like a it's like a 90 I Think it is
00:52:03
Ryan
Not unbelievable. It's getting like, yeah, it's fine.
00:52:08
Ryan
For a music movie, a 90 is kind of, you know, they all get 90.
00:52:11
tommy cresta
You need that tick tick boom numbers.
00:52:13
Ryan
Yeah.
00:52:14
tommy cresta
um My number two before we get into our honorable mentions is Alien Romulus. I said from when this movie came out to now I adored this movie.
00:52:25
tommy cresta
I am one of the biggest fans of this franchise. I think Fedi Alvarez stepped into shoes that most people did not think he could fill, especially with Ridley Scott making the first one, James Cameron doing two of the best movies of the 70s and the 80s of the 20th century. And then this guy comes out and makes the best alien movie since those first two that came out all those years ago and did it with practical filmmaking. The ability to do the face huggers as
00:52:58
tommy cresta
without CGI for the first time in so long was unbelievable. And the fact that when they announced the movie at Comic-Con, they released the Face Hikers into the crowd, just so much around this movie would look so cool. All the actors talking about how scary it was seeing real xenomorphs just popping out from places and all those kinds of things. And my one downside of this entire movie is it doesn't have that iconic shot that each movie has. but There's like snippets of shots, but they never get like that one I wish there was one shot, like like a money shot.
00:53:27
Ryan
Like a money shot, like a real deal of money shot.
00:53:29
tommy cresta
There's no like money shot in this movie. There's a couple quick shots that could be money shots, but the scene with the facehuggers in the water is one of the most
00:53:31
Ryan
Yeah.
00:53:38
tommy cresta
fear-inducing things that I could think of until the offspring thing happens and I have never felt this fear that ran down my spine the first time I saw that thing mountain just staring at the camera.
00:53:51
Ryan
Yeah.
00:53:52
tommy cresta
What the fuck? And the fact that that was practical too was unbelievable. I love Alien.
00:53:55
Ryan
Yeah.
00:53:56
tommy cresta
Fedi Alvarez, this dude deserves all of his flowers for that movie and I can't wait to see what Ridley Scott does in his Alien movie coming out, Alien Earth, the TV show, and the sequel to this movie.
00:54:00
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
00:54:08
Ryan
Mm-hmm. I feel like Alien Earth is not gonna...
00:54:12
tommy cresta
It's the guy did Fargo the dudes never made a bad season on television I'm gonna hold out That is true did that be so far I hope I think we do like how we did the disappointing just say all three why we put them there and
00:54:13
Ryan
I don't know.
00:54:16
Ryan
Well, yeah, but he's never made a fucking alien movie, an alien show. He made Fargo. You want alien Fargo? It would be funny, but it'd be so stupid. um All right, so honorable mentions. Are we doing one by one honorable mentions or just ripping through all three?
00:54:37
Ryan
All right, so honorable mentions. Number three, I have Furiosa, a Mad Max saga or story, whatever it was.
00:54:42
tommy cresta
Mm.
00:54:45
tommy cresta
Snog I think.
00:54:45
Ryan
Um, the movie was really good, but I feel like the use of CGI, it wasn't bad.
00:54:49
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:54:50
Ryan
It was implemented pretty well in most parts, but there were a couple of scenes, like it just didn't have the same punch as Fury Road because you know, Fury Road is one of the best action movies ever made now. Um, and Furiosa just didn't have that.
00:55:04
Ryan
I think Anya Taylor Joy did a great job, but, uh, Did you just notice him?
00:55:08
tommy cresta
i Just noticed that that's Rex.
00:55:09
Ryan
He's been there the whole time.
00:55:11
tommy cresta
I didn't know what that was the whole time and then finally like my eyes like focus on it I Still really loved it.
00:55:13
Ryan
Yeah. ah um But yeah, no, it's it was a really good movie. It was a really fun movie, but it just I didn't like it enough to crack my top 10, which was kind of disappointing because everybody was saying it was almost as good as the first one or you know close to it.
00:55:30
tommy cresta
I just
00:55:30
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah, I still did really like it, but it's not that good. it's not Fury Road. Good. Um, number two, I have gladiator to another good movie. It, I mean, doesn't hold a candle to the first one, but another good movie with really great acting. I think this one could have made my list. Definitely. I think, you know, it really could have. Um, but it just kind of kept it off there. Cause I remember we left and I gave it like a relatively high score and then like,
00:56:01
Ryan
It was one of those movies. The more I thought about it, the more I was like, man, it was, it was fine. It was all right. And it just kind of kept going down. And, uh, yeah. So that's, I think why I kept it off, but another good movie, good kind of legacy sequel.
00:56:15
Ryan
And I think the third one should be pretty cool.
00:56:18
tommy cresta
Interesting Yeah, they just didn't they had water I I could agree with the water.
00:56:19
Ryan
It should be pretty cool. I hope so. Um, they definitely never had sharks in the Coliseum. I don't know why. Yeah. Water's fine, but the sharks are, I don't know why people were defending that, including you Dickhead. Um,
00:56:34
tommy cresta
Why am I being thrown with the sharks?
00:56:36
Ryan
yeah, no, the water's fine. They probably did flood it, but the sharks, they didn't have like giant tanks to carry them.
00:56:42
tommy cresta
They have glass continue
00:56:44
Ryan
Yeah. They didn't have that. Um, number one. honorable mention is Alien Romulus another movie that like if this was objective it could have been like six or seven on my list if not maybe a little higher but yes like this movie is better than Deadpool 3 I'm not I'm not that much of an asshole like I know it is but this is my list so fuck you again um yeah no Alien Romulus was great it was really really good but
00:56:51
tommy cresta
Okay, major.
00:56:57
tommy cresta
Oh, like if you're saying it's just quality. Yeah.
00:57:14
Ryan
Um, yeah, just didn't, I didn't put it on my list. Sorry. Sue me. It's very good.
00:57:19
tommy cresta
I'm happy mate, I thought it wasn't gonna make any of your stuff.
00:57:22
Ryan
No, no, no, of course it did. But yeah.
00:57:25
tommy cresta
My honorable mentions, two of the three are horror movies.

Honorable Mentions

00:57:30
Ryan
Hmm.
00:57:30
tommy cresta
one of the one The one was on my list until literally this morning at 10 o'clock when I realized I forgot about Inora.
00:57:38
Ryan
Yeah.
00:57:39
tommy cresta
was lay on my list. ah the first one ah The first two were not on my list ever. They were just always right on the outside. First one is A24's We Live in Time with Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield.
00:57:51
tommy cresta
I'm in complete agreement with most most people on this movie, a lot of film critics. If this movie doesn't star Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh who give great performances, this movie's like a 60.
00:58:04
Ryan
Yeah.
00:58:04
tommy cresta
Because it's just a generic love story. that of course is gonna have a really sad ending. But Andrew Garfield in Flower's Peace Chemistry was perfect. I mean, they they even in their interviews, they feel like they they feel like love yeah like that they're in love. And I just love the movie. I legitimately cried the last 15 minutes nonstop. My mom had to reach over and be like, are you okay? I just could not stop crying. ah Stuff with like cancer and stuff kills me. But
00:58:36
tommy cresta
I loved this movie. I was so excited from the time they announced it. Ryan was a cynic against this movie from the first trailer. But then Ryan went solid, which is one of the craziest surprises ever.
00:58:44
Ryan
I saw it. I saw it by myself in a completely empty theater and I felt nothing. So, you know, the movie was okay. It was, is you know, like you said, if it wasn't those two, it would not be great.
00:58:59
Ryan
It's very, it's pretty generic, but it was good.
00:59:01
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:59:01
Ryan
I didn't cry because, you know, I'm like growing up, but um yeah, it it was fine. It was fine. It was weird seeing that movie alone though. Like nobody in the theater, dude, it was, it was very odd.
00:59:14
tommy cresta
I had a pack theater for mine, which made it so much more embarrassing that I couldn't stop crying.
00:59:16
Ryan
Yeah, that's surprising. Yeah.
00:59:20
tommy cresta
It was just women and me. I was the only dude in the entire theater.
00:59:24
Ryan
Yeah, no, I believe that. Yeah. No, I almost left that movie too. Like the first, like before it really like picks up and they start like, you know, before it really picks up when they're just like chatting and like starting to date, I was like, why the fuck did I do this to myself?
00:59:33
tommy cresta
Yeah.
00:59:38
Ryan
I hate this.
00:59:39
tommy cresta
The birthing scene is one of my favorite scenes. It was so just wild.
00:59:42
Ryan
That was great. Yeah, it was hilarious.
00:59:45
tommy cresta
But ah my number two for Arnold Mentions is The Substance, which I finally watched, a movie that I wanted to see so many times in theaters, but two hour and 40 minute horror movie really, really put me off. Just because i I'm a huge person and on the side of horror movies should never be more than two hours and never shorter than an hour and a half. There's that great spot in the middle. But this movie was hilarious. Like out loud laughing throughout.
01:00:14
tommy cresta
It is disgusting.
01:00:16
Ryan
Oh really? Look at you saying, how could this be a comedy for like months? There's no way.
01:00:21
tommy cresta
I know, I said it to Sam.
01:00:21
Ryan
It's a horror it's a body horror. How can it be funny?
01:00:23
tommy cresta
I was like, I have to apologize to everyone when I talk about this movie.
01:00:27
Ryan
Yeah.
01:00:28
tommy cresta
Dude, it was so good. And Demi Moore was awesome. Margaret Qualley continues to just do these in smaller movies that sadly and people don't go and see, but she is so good in this.
01:00:41
tommy cresta
Dennis Quaid. is the best stereotype of like a Hollywood old white guy. He is so homophobic.
01:00:47
Ryan
Mm-hmm.
01:00:48
tommy cresta
He's so racist, so sexist. And it was so I mean, Sam was cracking up.
01:00:53
Ryan
Man, I really gotta watch this movie now.
01:00:55
tommy cresta
But it was it was really good in the final 10, 15 minutes are so ah over the top that it like it doesn't even take itself seriously. The one character is like superpowers. It's why I don't even know how to explain it.
01:01:07
Ryan
Okay.
01:01:08
tommy cresta
But the substance was a really good time. I really want to see more of her films. but yeah, substance was a good watch. And then the movie that held a spot on my list all year up until the end is The First Omen, a movie that is one of the best-made movies of the year. If I was doing this fully off of how Ryan says it, if I was doing it like critically, this would have been top seven for me. But I ended up doing it of what I liked more and what I found more enjoyable. And yeah, The First Omen just missed. It has one of the scariest scenes I've ever seen. It's right up there with the bedroom scene from Skin of Meringue, but yeah.
01:01:42
tommy cresta
i am I really liked the first omen. I was kind of sad to make my list.
01:01:46
Ryan
Nice. Immaculate didn't make your list.
01:01:51
tommy cresta
That's the funniest thing. I saw those five days apart and they're the exact same stories.
01:01:54
Ryan
Yeah.
01:01:55
tommy cresta
The first omen is just an A plus and the macula is a D plus.
01:02:00
Ryan
yeah Okay.
01:02:02
tommy cresta
I not like the macula.
01:02:02
Ryan
All right. So there's the honorable mentions. Now's the big moment.
01:02:06
tommy cresta
Yeah, um I have no idea what your favorite movie is.
01:02:09
Ryan
I think you just didn't remember this movie or didn't know about it, but it's a real pain.

Favorite Film Discussion

01:02:15
tommy cresta
Oh, I never saw it. I never got around to it.
01:02:17
Ryan
Dude, it's the last one that I watched. It's it's the last movie I watched. I watched it like two days ago.
01:02:23
tommy cresta
Damn.
01:02:24
Ryan
It was fucking great. Because they just put it on Hulu. I really wanted to watch it, but it was like 20 bucks to rent it. You had to buy it. You couldn't rent it everywhere.
01:02:31
tommy cresta
Yeah.
01:02:31
Ryan
But they finally put it on Hulu like two days ago. And I was like, all right, fuck yeah, I'll watch it. And it was phenomenal. it's just It's such a simple story that's just fully carried by the by the characters and the actors.
01:02:43
Ryan
kieran colkin You said he got nominated. That man really, really might win because Benji is one of my favorite characters of the year. I used i think he's like right behind Igor for me. um Just such a of really, really complicated character. He's such like, I mean, there's there's a monologue that it's like a minute long that Jesse Eisenberg has where he just explains because the the whole movie is just their cousins who the grandmother dies and they go to Poland to see, you know, where they come from and then like where she came from.
01:03:14
Ryan
That's the whole movie. Very simple. It's like an hour 45. That's it. It might be, it might be like an hour 35. Um, so they do that, but Benji is just such a complicated character.
01:03:26
Ryan
Um, Jesse Eisenberg, I forget his character's name, but he's, he's much more like straight shooter job just living in New York. He's got wife and kid, all that kind of dorky.
01:03:33
tommy cresta
Thank you.
01:03:35
Ryan
And then Karen Culkin is just the wild child living it with his parents smoking weed the whole time and just seeing them. because they're cousins and they still love each other, but they hate each other because they're so different at the same time.
01:03:48
Ryan
It's just the relationship between those is the entire movie. And it's done so well because both of those dudes are acting their fucking asses off. And it just, it works so well. I was completely, you know, hooked from the very beginning.
01:04:01
Ryan
So yeah, good movie.
01:04:02
tommy cresta
Jesse Eisenberg. Shout out.
01:04:05
Ryan
Yeah.
01:04:05
tommy cresta
It's his director or a debut, isn't it?
01:04:07
Ryan
Yeah, I think so.
01:04:08
tommy cresta
Yeah.
01:04:08
Ryan
And I think he directed Didn't he to direct that like World War II movie?
01:04:15
tommy cresta
Jesse Eisenberg?
01:04:15
Ryan
There was one where he was, I think, it wasn't like a war movie. I think he was, or maybe, I don't remember.
01:04:18
tommy cresta
Ah.
01:04:21
Ryan
Let me see.
01:04:24
Ryan
Jesse Eisenberg directed movies. All right, no, he's directed, but he did direct When You Finish Saving the World from 22. Who was that?
01:04:36
Ryan
Finn Wolfhard, Julianne Moore. I don't remember that for a second, but
01:04:40
tommy cresta
um I don't remember that at all. Finn Wolfhard is having his directorial debut.
01:04:45
Ryan
Is he?
01:04:45
tommy cresta
Yeah, it's like a horror movie.
01:04:47
Ryan
Nice. Apparently Jesse Eisenberg also directed Becoming a Werewolf. It's a short film. I don't i think I'm going to keep that off my list. um Yeah.

Dune Part 2 Praise

01:04:59
tommy cresta
Oh, we never saw Sasquatch Sunrise.
01:05:02
Ryan
Yeah. Sasquatch Sunset, Thomas.
01:05:05
tommy cresta
So, whatever.
01:05:06
Ryan
Yeah. You were close.
01:05:06
tommy cresta
I'm talking about the prequel that comes out next year.
01:05:08
Ryan
Yeah. No, that was a movie I did really want to watch, but didn't get around to it.
01:05:11
tommy cresta
Yeah, fuck.
01:05:14
Ryan
Um, yeah, I'm sure it was fun. i I don't think it would have made my list. I think it's just people in monkey costumes walking around banging on trees.
01:05:23
tommy cresta
With giant genitalia prosthetics.
01:05:26
Ryan
Yeah. Fuck. Yeah.
01:05:27
tommy cresta
um My number one movie of the year, if you haven't guessed, it's been my number one movie since the day I walked from the start of the movie to now. ah It's Doom part two. I think this is one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made. I think Denis Villeneuve solidified himself as the best director working right now. He's right up there with Christopher Nolan for me. He's my favorite director by leaps and bounds.
01:05:53
tommy cresta
And Timothรฉe Chalamet as Paul Atreides is a perfect casting to me. That speech he gives in front of all those people is, I could run through a fucking wall for Paul Atreides. And ah find the score, not when he's fighting Faderotha, the score from when he beats Fade, he gets the surrender and they all start flying up for the war.
01:06:15
Ryan
get to murder billions of people.
01:06:17
tommy cresta
It is one of the greatest, I don't care what they're gonna do. I'm on Paul Trady's side the whole time. It is one of the greatest scores ever. It's called Kiss of the Ring. If you haven't heard it, go listen to it. It is absolutely perfect. Rebecca Ferguson's unbelievable. I can't wait to see more Christopher Walken, more Florence Pugh. I can't wait for everyone to

Future Film Excitement

01:06:36
tommy cresta
see Doom Messiah. It's going to be unbelievable. And the fact that you're also gonna get the same time as the Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's Odyssey, which Jon Bernthal just joined the cast of, what the fuck?
01:06:46
Ryan
All right.
01:06:47
tommy cresta
That, yeah.
01:06:47
Ryan
He's probably playing the Cyclops.
01:06:50
tommy cresta
That movie is going to be unbelievable and so is Doom Messiah and yeah, I think Doom, Doom Part 2 is just the scene of them floating up at the beginning.
01:07:00
Ryan
Yeah, it's awesome.
01:07:00
tommy cresta
ah Like all those C8s, unbelievable. But yeah, ah that's how you do a high ah big budget film like that.
01:07:08
Ryan
Yeah.
01:07:10
tommy cresta
Damn.
01:07:10
Ryan
Yeah.
01:07:11
tommy cresta
Yeah, so Doom Part 2, my favorite movie of the year. Also, did you know Annie Romulus only had a $30 million budget?
01:07:16
Ryan
Yeah, yeah, super low.
01:07:17
tommy cresta
And it made like 380.
01:07:19
Ryan
Yeah, it's amazing.
01:07:20
tommy cresta
God damn.
01:07:21
Ryan
I'm kind of realizing, the more that I think about it, the reason Dune had so much money to focus on the on the effects of the people, because that it looks amazing in the ships. Because there's no fucking buildings in the movie.
01:07:33
Ryan
It's just sand the whole time. They don't have to worry about anything.
01:07:34
tommy cresta
but
01:07:36
Ryan
Even when they go to the different planet with Florence Pugh, it's just grass. They just went to like a garden and were like, all right, build a fucking shed we can walk into, and we're good.
01:07:44
tommy cresta
It lay is like two rooms in that world, two rooms in the other in a on Dune on a Arrakis.
01:07:45
Ryan
Yeah.
01:07:48
Ryan
Yeah. Hmm. Like the first one, when there's the, the city, they, you know, quote unquote city that they go to originally, there's buildings there, but then they just go off into the desert immediately.
01:07:59
Ryan
I'm not not saying that to knock the movie. I'm just saying I must make it much simpler.
01:08:02
tommy cresta
Makes sense how they say.
01:08:05
Ryan
you know
01:08:07
tommy cresta
And now the hardest thing in production wise for that movie had to be doing the UV light.
01:08:13
Ryan
Oh yeah.
01:08:14
tommy cresta
That had to be so fucking annoying because one person moves wrong if I mess up the entire shot.
01:08:15
Ryan
Yeah. Yeah. But it's so cool.
01:08:21
tommy cresta
But yeah, that movie is I love Doom part two. And I really, I need to rewatch it because I don't think I've seen it since it left theaters because I went solid in theater so many times.

Film Recommendations

01:08:30
tommy cresta
But yeah, that is our best and worst of 2024.
01:08:31
Ryan
Yeah. Oh, one more thing about doing two.
01:08:34
tommy cresta
That was the most.
01:08:36
Ryan
Fuck that kid who sat next to me. That fucking douchebag who was cracking beers and talking the entire time, smoking in the theater.
01:08:39
tommy cresta
Yeah.
01:08:43
tommy cresta
probably ruined it for you a little bit yeah you did see it again thank god um but before we leave ryan out of all your best movies or honorable mentions recommend one of them what what movie would you choose for everyone to go watch
01:08:45
Ryan
ah Yeah, no, absolutely he did. But then I did see it a second time and I was like, yeah, it's all right. It's good.
01:09:00
Ryan
Megalopolis. um No, I think.
01:09:06
Ryan
I'll recommend, I'll co-recommend too, because there's such different movies, but it's going to be a real pain in kneecap. If you want, there's similar lengths under two hours. A real pain is a great like drama and just character, um very character driven, just two cousins talking and just figuring out life, just going through a trip. And the kneecap is a drug fueled fucking fever dream with Irish music all throughout. So whichever one of those,
01:09:35
Ryan
Whichever one of those two seems more interesting to you, watch it. Because they're both great movies in their own right. But definitely on ah different sides of the spectrum of a good movie.
01:09:46
Ryan
So recommend those two.
01:09:48
tommy cresta
I'll do a co-recommendation.
01:09:49
Ryan
Co-recommendation.
01:09:52
tommy cresta
We'll go two very different films. We'll go I Feel like doing you can't recommend aliens not for everyone I'm gonna say if you're a religious person go watch heretic cuz it will I mean it Threw my brain for a loop and I have had the same beliefs as I was a little kid So that was a wild thing to experience. And then I would say, I should go watch Saturday Night. It is so funny. It's not so like a heavy hitter. I mean, you could put it on and just listen to some of the jokes. Half the script is ad-libbed, like they just kept trying to be like Saturday Night Live. They talk about on the production side. And the guy who plays John Belushi is, I didn't say it earlier, he was great. He was so funny, but yeah.
01:10:40
tommy cresta
ah Go watch one of those two films, they're both on Amazon Prime. But yeah, Ryan, there it is. There's our best and worst movies of 2024.
01:10:47
Ryan
Sweet.
01:10:49
tommy cresta
Now, the next thing we have to do...
01:10:50
Ryan
Got it done. We got it done after saying we're going to do it after we see the brutalist.
01:10:56
tommy cresta
And then we got sick and we couldn't push it back anymore.
01:10:56
Ryan
We didn't see the goddamn brutalist. Yeah.
01:10:59
tommy cresta
We have to then do the popcorn Oscars or Oscar guesses, do an Oscar breakdown.
01:10:59
Ryan
We had to get this out.
01:11:05
tommy cresta
We still have to do Ryan still has to watch the Alien movies.
01:11:09
Ryan
I do. I do. I do. I do. I definitely do.
01:11:11
tommy cresta
And they're all on Hulu.
01:11:13
Ryan
They are all on Hulu.
01:11:14
tommy cresta
They are. They're also on Disney Plus. Which is so weird to me seeing Alien on Dearly Plus.
01:11:18
Ryan
Which is Hulu. Yeah.
01:11:21
tommy cresta
But

Streaming Frustrations

01:11:22
tommy cresta
yeah. um Yeah. Thank you guys so much for tuning in. What's the next movie that come. Let's see. What's the next like movie that we're going to.
01:11:30
Ryan
Although Disney Plus doesn't work up in my garage now.
01:11:33
tommy cresta
Really.
01:11:34
Ryan
it pissed me Every time I try to open the app, because the past couple nights I've had like, you know, Nate and Puff coming over and I'm like, all right, well, I got 30 minutes to kill. Let me watch some, i wanted I just, all I want to do is watch some Star Wars and Clone Wars.
01:11:46
Ryan
The app just won't open. I just, I just, I click on Disney Plus and it just sits there on a loading screen for 20 minutes. It's infuriating me.

Upcoming Films and TV Shows

01:11:55
tommy cresta
I'm sorry.
01:11:55
Ryan
Hulu works fine, which pisses me off even more because they're the same goddamn company. Why does one of your thing work and the other one doesn't?
01:12:03
tommy cresta
Maybe to update it.
01:12:03
Ryan
Makes, makes me upset. I don't know how to do that, but I'll figure it out.
01:12:07
tommy cresta
Here do I. That's why it didn't work in my basement for a little bit. So presence is out.
01:12:11
Ryan
Yeah.
01:12:14
Ryan
Presence from San.
01:12:15
tommy cresta
The horror, the ghost movie from the ghost point of view.
01:12:16
Ryan
Oh, Oh yeah. It's not going to be good.
01:12:20
tommy cresta
a Oh, Captain, Captain, um Captain America.
01:12:21
Ryan
What does it have? What does it have?
01:12:24
tommy cresta
ah comes out What do you think it has?
01:12:25
Ryan
My mom bought tickets for that last week. That's how excited for that movie she is. And she is so upset at us for constantly shitting on it.
01:12:37
Ryan
Presence Okay.
01:12:37
tommy cresta
Yeah um IMDB and ros six five i m db ninety d Rotten Tomatoes
01:12:49
Ryan
Yeah. All right.
01:12:52
Ryan
Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know, I love, like I always say, I think a movie's bad, I love to be proven wrong, but that movie doesn't, I i don't see how it's gonna be that scary if you already know who the ghost is.
01:12:54
tommy cresta
It's certified.
01:12:58
tommy cresta
ah
01:13:04
Ryan
Nothing's gonna jump out of you, you know what I mean?
01:13:05
tommy cresta
That's what I thought. It says a slow burning spectral thriller presence reaffirms that Soderbergh plays with form as definitely as he fits between as he as he flirts between genres.
01:13:18
Ryan
it It is kind of funny we got this right after in a violent nature. Which was like, Oh, it's just, this is such a weird thing.
01:13:23
tommy cresta
Yeah.
01:13:25
Ryan
Seeing it from the killer's point of view. And then Soderbergh's like, I'm already kind of making the same thing, just different.
01:13:31
tommy cresta
yeah Dude in a vile nature that has the most vile kill ever in He saw with the the yoga oh oh ah it is It's a wild thing to see enough the dude like the row in front of me started gagging I was like, that's a fair reaction but
01:13:36
Ryan
Oh yeah. I i finally saw it. The fish hook or whatever. Yeah. Pulls it through. This is wild. Oh my God.
01:13:50
Ryan
Really? Yeah.
01:13:54
tommy cresta
Yeah. Um, yeah. Thank you guys for tuning in. We know it would probably be Captain America.
01:13:59
Ryan
Wait, when does that come out?
01:13:59
tommy cresta
We'll probably be the next movie we review, but it comes out next week. Where does it come out today?
01:14:05
Ryan
Fuck. No, I thought it was February.
01:14:10
tommy cresta
Oh, is it 13th?
01:14:11
Ryan
I thought it was like the 12th or 13th.
01:14:13
tommy cresta
Yeah.
01:14:14
Ryan
Yeah, should be like Valentine's Day.
01:14:15
tommy cresta
Damn.
01:14:19
tommy cresta
And there's no movies coming out right now.
01:14:19
Ryan
I know.
01:14:21
tommy cresta
This is the worst time of year.
01:14:23
Ryan
Yeah.
01:14:25
tommy cresta
Oh, we got...
01:14:25
Ryan
Except for those little ones, like those monkey man's who come out and they're like, oh shit, I got it.
01:14:28
tommy cresta
Yeah, sneaky good.
01:14:30
Ryan
Yeah. The ones they don't really believe in. So they're like, yeah, I will just throw that out and ends up being real fucking good.
01:14:34
tommy cresta
Oh, the Attack on Titan movie comes out.
01:14:37
Ryan
Oh, that was good. Fuck. I forgot to put that in my honorable mentions. I was going to sneak that in because the finale movie, because I watched it when it was on Cartoon Network.
01:14:43
tommy cresta
Yeah.
01:14:46
Ryan
i Found it. I think I did something illegal, but I don't know for sure I literally just went on Google and looked up attack on Titan finale movie and it was on Adult Swim for free. I don't I didn't have to like sign into anything.
01:14:58
Ryan
I just watched it so it was it was Adult Swim's website.
01:15:00
tommy cresta
Oh my, that's, that's not illegal. Yeah.
01:15:03
Ryan
I don't know. I didn't do anything wrong, but It was so fucking good though.
01:15:05
tommy cresta
Yeah. That was the day debuted.
01:15:07
Ryan
Yeah, it was so
01:15:07
tommy cresta
Yeah.

Concerns and Future Projects

01:15:08
Ryan

01:15:08
tommy cresta

01:15:15
Ryan
Yeah.
01:15:17
tommy cresta
Damn.
01:15:17
Ryan
It was, it was really good. It was a good finale. I don't know if you're going to love it.
01:15:21
tommy cresta
Oh, Wolfman's out.
01:15:22
Ryan
I'm just kidding. I think you're gonna like it a lot.
01:15:26
Ryan
Yeah. Apparently it's dog shit.
01:15:27
tommy cresta
Yeah, I know. It's kind of breaking my heart.
01:15:29
Ryan
Yeah. I mean, the more I saw trailers for that movie, the more it looked like he's just not going to be the Wolfman. Like, you know what I mean? He's never in costume. Like, I understand saving it for the movie, but it seems like it's not that long of a movie.
01:15:44
Ryan
It seems like he's going to be the Wolfman for like the last two minutes and you're barely going to see it. You know what I mean?
01:15:49
tommy cresta
yeah hu damn yeah there's nothing out fuck it's gonna be a boring couple weeks um but yeah thank you guys so much for tuning in i don't know what we're gonna review next maybe we'll be presents or maybe ryan will watch alien and then we can do the alien rankings or we can or we could do the uh
01:15:49
Ryan
Which is really disappointing because I don't want to see some dude who's just got fucking scales and boils on his skin. run around for an hour and a half. That's not, I don't really feel like watching that. So yeah.
01:16:15
Ryan
It's possible.
01:16:19
tommy cresta
Our top 10 directors thing we were talking about.
01:16:22
Ryan
Oh yeah.
01:16:23
tommy cresta
And then have like their view, write their favorite movie with it.
01:16:27
Ryan
Yeah. I feel like there's a lot of movies I want to watch though from direct.
01:16:28
tommy cresta
i think
01:16:30
Ryan
Like if I have a director, I'm like, I want to finish his cinematography.
01:16:34
tommy cresta
Like filmography.
01:16:36
Ryan
Whatever. Yeah. That's what I meant. Sorry. Filmography.
