Sarah-Daye McDougall: Welcome back to Bookwatch, where pages meet screens. We are here for our monthly adaptation report, where we catch up on the latest page -to -screen news. I'm Sarah Day.
Jordyn: And I'm Jordan, and November is shaping up to be a huge month for adaptations, especially November 20th, if you know you know. We've got a bit of a book -to -screen showdown with two bigger adaptations you might be aware of, but we also have a lesser -known adaptation joining the competition on that same day.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: dun du du We're also talking about how the success of heated rivalry created a ripple effect beyond the screen, boosting book sales and opening new doors for its stars.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's a perfect example of why we love talking about this stuff between books and visual entertainment and how they can bolster each other up.
Jordyn: And we also have Dragonrider news, a new look into Narnia, and a new branch of Bridgerton lore.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: so whether you're here for the books the movies or the deets behind the adaptations we've got you covered
Jordyn: So settle in and let's get caught up right after these messages.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Welcome back. Jordan, do you want to kick us off with what you've been reading and watching the past month?
Jordyn: Yes. I mean, hopefully you guys saw on our Instagram page, but we're all about ACOTAR right now.
Jordyn: Court of Splintered Harmony came out, so I've just been reading that. pulling out my notes and my red string from the other books and like getting sure making sure my theories are all in place doing that and then uh finishing up our Twilight coverage.
Jordyn: So wrapping up with Breaking Dawn. I paused on my book club books because with ACOTAR and Breaking Dawn's a big girl. So I was like, I can't also reread One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns from my book club at the same time.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, she is.
Jordyn: So I paused those, but I do want to finish them because they are that good that they're worth a reread. But yeah, that's what I've been reading right now, watching. Not watching a lot, just Twilight as usual. And that's pretty much it.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, the Twilight.
Jordyn: What about you?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: kind of took over the reading and the watching this the whole series we've you know we If you have been following along with us, we've been doing that series over the month of October.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And Breaking Dawn is a big one. And it's two films. That kind of took up a lot of my reading and watching time, but I did finish Slow Horses, which is an adaptation that series. wrapped up its season.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And of course. Vision Quest is currently running.
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And then as far as reading goes... Aside from Twilight, we are listening. My husband and I are working our way through the Dungeon Crawler series still. I think we're on book five.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Fibers. six of that series so we're moving right along But. We are going to be getting into, I need to reread both Percy Jackson and.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: sunrise on the reaping spoiler alert for later november 20th news And also, I guess I need to reread.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Dickens. uh christmas carol
Jordyn: Mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So that we can do Ebenezer at the end of the year.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And speaking of the end of the year, I guess I need to reread The Sorcerer's Stone also.
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah, we've got a lot of rereading to do this year, which is kind of nice because then it's like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: you can just kind of enjoy it because it's familiar you know versus like something new is like oh my god I have to pay attention and like make notes and stuff but I mean, don't get me wrong it's still gonna be brutal to reread sunrise on the reaping i read it once last year when it when it was like coming out.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Exactly. Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes. Me too.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: And I just, it's devastating. And so I'm like, I had to be in the good headspace. to reread that one and even
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. It's wild how much more devastating it is. than the original trilogy and ballad of songbirds and snakes like just just it's so much more like
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: the original trilogy does have a lot of heartbreak but man this one just i don't know if it's because i'm a an adult now with my own children, but this one just really stings in a way the other ones haven't.
Jordyn: I think it's because we already love Haymitch from the original series.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: And we know...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: We know what his like PTSD looks like with his drinking.
Jordyn: And so to get and we even see a little bit of his games in Catching Fire, which we talked about in our episode. Go check that out. But like to actually see like beat for beat exactly what happened and everything that he went through.
Jordyn: It's... Like... that much worse and like the whole like internet is joking like he should have been drinking more he should have been like even more toxic like all the stuff that he had to go through so
Jordyn: it's a tough reread i'm going to cry i'm going to cry in theaters we know this we've talked about this
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I'm gonna cry in theaters for sure.
Jordyn: Yeah, but even even this Percy Jackson one is the one I always liken it to like Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter were like it starts to get really serious and dark in this in the Titans curse. And so I'm gonna cry again rereading and watching that too so it's just gonna be a tearful November and December and then I'll cry when Harry Potter comes out because it's so magical and nostalgic there's just gonna be a lot of emotions happening over here
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. Yeah. And. you know as we're talking about news and we're talking about rereading everything the next few weeks we're going to be re -releasing our hunger games and percy jackson episode so we're not going to have any new content as we prep for percy jackson series where we're going to start doing it episodically And of course, Sunrise on the Reaping on the 20th. And then...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I guess Narnia is going to come out sometime in there also, or is that in the new year?
Jordyn: I think it's in January or February, depending.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay. So yeah, lots of rereading going on, but we will be covering all this new content. We've got a big November, December, and January coming up.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Speaking of things coming up, I'm going to run through this month's releases. And again, we have another big month. So starting on the sixth, we have Being Human. And that's H -E -U -M -A -N -N. This is a book, The Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist by Judith Heumann.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: and that is going to hit theaters this is a biographical film following the disability rights activist Judith Heumann and her fight against discrimination. On November 11th on...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: prime video we have the season three of lord of the rings the rings of power which of course is another jrr tolkien lore. November 11th, we have season two of Arrivals, part two.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This book is by Jilly Cooper, and this premieres on Hulu in the US and then Disney Plus in the international markets. This is set in the glamorous and scandal -filled world of the 1980s British television. The series follows the rivalry between...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: powerful television executive toady battingham and former olympic showrunner show jumper, Rupert Campbell Black. The following day on November 12th, we have The Good Daughter. which is based on the book by Karen Slaughter. This premieres on Peacock. And is about sisters Charlotte and Samantha Quinn.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: who are left traumatized after a brutal attack on their family during... childhood. Decades later, another violent incident. in their small Georgia town forces them to confront the secrets and memories from their past.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: On November 13th. We have two premieres, Victorian Psycho. on in theaters, which is based on the book by Virginia Faito. This is set in Victorian England and follows Renifred Noddy, a governess who arrives at a wealthy family's remote estate with disturbing secrets of her own.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We also have Ebenezer Hitting Theaters, which of course is inspired by A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. And this is a rematch. a reimagining of the miserably miserably businessman who is visited by supernatural encounters on Christmas Eve.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: November 18th, we have Guiding. guarding stars which is based on the book the bodyguard by katherine center this is premiering on netflix and it features a professional bodyguard hired to protect a famous actor but their arrangement becomes complicated when they must pretend to be romantically involved
Sarah-Daye McDougall: On November 20th, of course, we have the big showdown between three adaptations, starting with probably the biggest one is going to be The Hunger Games, Sunrise and the Reaping, which is based on the series by Suzanne Collins.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This is, of course, coming to theaters and is Hamish's story. So this is set. during the 50th Hunger Games. We also have Percy Jackson season three coming to Disney plus, and this is based on the Titans cook.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The Titans Cook. The Titans Curse by Rick Riordan. And in this one. Percy and his friends embark on a dangerous quest after Annabeth and the goddess Artemis go missing. Their journey brings them into conflict with powerful monsters and the growing threat of the titan lord Kronos.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And. Finally, on November 20th, we have The Way of the Warrior Kid, which is coming on Apple TV. This is based on the book by Jocko Willink and is about a young boy struggling with bullying and self -confidence.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: spending the summer training with his Navy SEAL uncle. Through discipline, physical fitness, and perseverance, he learns to overcome challenges and develop confidence.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The following week on November... 26 season two of the hunting rives returns to netflix and this is based on the series by may cobb In this season, Sophie O 'Neill becomes entangled with the elite group of wealthy Texas women whose glamorous lives conceal dangerous secrets.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And that wraps up what is. coming out this month. from pages to screens. Jordan, since you've moved to Texas, have you seen any of these hunting wives in your real life?
Jordyn: No. I think we're too close to the big city of Austin.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The cities.
Jordyn: to see much of that, but I mean... I would love to be a wealthy Texas woman at some point.
Jordyn: And. So... But yeah, no, I haven't. see i mean i know that it's hunting season is approaching i've heard tell and i think some of the you know gentlemen that I work with are getting excited about it, but I haven't seen any wealthy hunting wives in my life.
Jordyn: Great. No, but it sounds fun. It's kind of giving like. Duck Dynasty meets Real Housewives.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: which I mean, I grew up watching both of those shows. I'm kind of into that. That's fine. but yeah november's packed there's a lot of stuff and there's actually a lot of stuff that i'm excited about that i've heard of
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.
Jordyn: Just going back through. the guarding stars. bodyguard situation I'm excited to have Jared Padalecki back on my screen like I've seen the trailer for that one I think it's going to be so fun I love those particular like romance tropes like forced proximity and fake dating it's like oh yes like yes give me that I love that
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: We talked about Ebenezer, the Hunger Games, Percy Jackson, obviously so, so excited for those. I saw the trailer for Way of the Warrior Kid on X. I didn't see like when it was coming out.
Jordyn: So the fact that they're like coming out on the 20th, I'm like, okay, girl, good luck. I don't know how many.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: But it's also going straight to streaming. So I don't know how many people are going to actually watch it. on November 20th when it premieres, but it'll probably have legs throughout since it's straight to streaming.
Jordyn: Apple TV.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: has a great reputation of putting out great products and then jocko willing is like very famous in the podcast sphere he has a number of shows that i used to listen to actually and
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep. Yep.
Jordyn: it stars chris pratt so like that's kind of the niche of you know it's another like military movie that Chris Pratt is doing so I think it's gonna I think it'll do really well and I like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: the premise of it, you know, a young Good. kid who's getting bullied at school and his uncles and Navy SEALs like this is how you be a good man. You have to teach self -discipline and, you know. work out and do all these things to make yourself healthier and stronger and more confident and that will make your life better I think that's a good message for kids so I think I'm just, I'm really excited about a lot of these things.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Not that bullying is okay.
Jordyn: No, not that bullying is okay. But like, instead of, you know. getting depressed or like super angry or and like acting out lashing out violently as you know we see in this world is increasing
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: increasingly common response that people have like instead let's channel that into bettering ourselves so that way we're we are less of a target.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: So of all the options, that's a better option than what we see with a lot of other people who become mentally unwell. harm others. But yeah, lots of good stuff coming in November. I'm actually excited. I have to start carving out time to watch. more things because I'm excited about a lot of these.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Same. Yeah. Just like October. We have a good lineup coming up this month. Some of it is on my future to watch list. We did the first season of Lord of the Rings. We have not returned to that series, but one day I would like to.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Obviously, we're going to do Ebenezer on. The cast, Hunger Games, Percy, we're doing on the cast. And. Yeah. I mean, maybe one day we'll get to some of this other stuff, but.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: If you guys have read them or are going to be watching them, please let us know. what you're anticipating and what you think once they come out.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So some other reviews to update everybody on. Something that I saw, this is kind of old news, but it's just really. cool to see the numbers but the success of heated rivalry which is based on the Second novel in Rachel Reed's Game Changers hockey romance series is proving just how powerful the relationship between books and television can be. Following the show's premiere on HBO Max.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Weekly print sales for Heated Rivalry skyrocketed by more than 8000%, while sales of the entire Game Changers series increased by nearly 4000%. So.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This is just one example of how. turning books into either a TV show or a movie helps the success of the books because people see that it's based on the book and they want to go check out the book. And people that, you know, things like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: fourth wing getting an adaptation and how big Fourth wing was on. book talk, got people. reading the book and then they wanted to read more fantasy which just gets them into reading in general and it's just really cool to see how That. how the shows can help boost the book sales.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But on the flip side. Both Hudson Williams and Connor Story. are getting all these amazing opportunities because of how well the show did and I think you know like the book talk world helped with that success of the show and it just it caught fire But...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: this at the end of the day this was still based on a book and now these two actors careers are going to soar. To the point where I believe it's Connor story is the one that is. Going.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: it's rumored i believe i don't think it's confirmed but he's going to be opposite Ryan Gosling. in Ghost Rider.
Jordyn: Mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: so you know for him to come to this Rather small. book adaptation that just blew up and now he's going to be in a Marvel movie and then Hudson Williams on the other hand I think is writing and about to direct his own feature film.
Jordyn: Yep.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So it's just really cool to see how. books and visual media can work together to booster both industries.
Jordyn: Yeah, absolutely. I appreciate what you said about, like... you know, fourth wing, you know, getting more people just to read books and read fantasy in general, a rising tide lifts all boats.
Jordyn: Right. So like if one book to screen adaptation, you know, that's not a big franchise like Harry Potter, the Hunger Games. Right. If one of these does really well, that's where I now.
Jordyn: we're able to have a news report every month and announce a new one. Like there's a new one announced every month for us to talk about because.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: One of them does well, and then, you know, producers and... you know exacts see like oh people love books and want to see the books adapted so let's make more and so eventually like you get a fourth wing you're gonna get
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: God willing, you're going to get an Acatara thrown a glass in the future, right, when SJM is ready for that challenge.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: And so that just means that so many more fandoms are going to get to see their beloved. characters and stories brought to life and that's great for everybody so i Go heated rivalry. Go.
Jordyn: Not my cup of tea.
Jordyn: Probably won't ever watch it or read it myself personally. But you go, guys. Have fun. Keep it going. Keep making that money and get the hype train for the rest of us who want to see our stuff adapted.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, well, in a more PG -13 level of adaptations, Wildwood, the stop -motion animated adaptation of Colin Molloy's...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: 2011 fantasy novel illustrated by Carson Ellis received a perfect 100 % critics score on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 15 reviews
Sarah-Daye McDougall: following its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. This film was produced by Leica, the studio behind Coraline and Cubo and the Two Strings, and was directed by Travis Knight. The film follows a young girl named Prue who ventures into a magical wilderness to rescue her kidnapped baby brother. Critics have praised the film's vicious animation intricate world building and visual storytelling with some calling
Sarah-Daye McDougall: with some calling Laika's most impressive achievement yet this is definitely one that I want to see I want to read the book first but just the fact that they put so much
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: love and care into this stop motion. feature film and apparently it is incredible i can't wait to visit it i hope that it gets all of the Like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: love that it deserves from both critics and Just.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: the general audience.
Jordyn: Yeah, I mean this is almost a decade's worth of hundreds of people's lives.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm
Jordyn: to create this stop motion film and is you know there's so much uh conversation around it you know with this. AI world that we're entering into and, you know, most artists and authors, you know, disavowing AI and, you know.
Jordyn: So to have this movie coming out now is actually like so perfect as like a big F you to AI.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: It's like, no human creation, like human creativity and passion. work like that's what's really art that's what's really beautiful and so the fact that it's gotten 100 % from critics. so far I've heard from you know creators that I follow who have seen seen it during the premieres you've seen it early they're singing praises for it so i think you know even if i can't get around to reading the book first.
Jordyn: I for sure want to see it in theaters just to like signal to people that like, no, this is the type of movie that we want to see. This is the type of human led creation that we want to see that we value.
Jordyn: And again, like we were talking about buying books and having adaptation shows and movies do well sends a message supporting this movie is also going to send a message.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm
Jordyn: And so, you know, We have to put our money where our mouths are. signal with our dollars that like, no, we don't want AI slop.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep.
Jordyn: We want real human art. And so go out and support Wildwood, go see it. see it five times take your friends take your family like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: this is and it's truly an achievement to like even just the trailers like the fact that it's stop motion like clay animation is just incredible it's so stunning to look at visually so I hope it does really, really well and I intend to help it do well.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. Good. Yeah. If we can get out to see it. I would like to. We'll see. you know if it's still in theaters over the holidays if we can't get out there during one of the weekends.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We'll definitely try because I think it's a movie that I can take the kids to.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: so yeah well hopefully but like jordan said just gonna echo what she said if you can go out and support that i know it's hard to go to the movies these days uh but yeah if you can and you're willing please go do so
Sarah-Daye McDougall: All right, let's get into some updates. Prime Video has officially confirmed the lead cast for its upcoming adaptation of Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yaros. If you have not seen this information on the... Social medias. Where have you been? Because.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It blew up. But. Without further ado. Esther McGregor. who is from We Were Liars and also the daughter of Ewan McGregor, will be playing Violet Sorengale.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And Emilio. sakraya From Warrior None, we'll be portraying Zayden Rearson. The series will bring Yars' best -selling Empyrean Romanticist saga to the screen, which currently includes three published novels, Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm, with five books planned in total.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Meredith Averell, the haunting of Hill House, will serve as showrunner, while Fallout executive producer Lisa Joy will direct the pilot. And of course, Michael B. Jordan has.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: been signed on as executive proof. producer from the start through his outlier society company. Rebecca expressed her excitement about the casting following quite a lot of online chatter about these two being cast.
Jordyn: mm -hmm Yeah, initially it was. What I was seeing was like, they look nothing like these characters. And it's like, OK, you're never going to. That's just the. realities of having real life humans do these adaptations. You're never going to find somebody who's exactly 100%.
Jordyn: Perfect. It's just not real life.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I want to go back to our AI conversation because there is a lot of AI content on BookTok and Bookstagram turning these characters.
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: into lifelike. creations. But the thing with AI is like, it's not real. They take the best features of humanity and turn it into this artwork.
Jordyn: Yeah. Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's just not real humans.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So... You can't. be disappointed when these real actors don't look like your AI content.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We shouldn't be supporting that content anyway.
Jordyn: Right.
Jordyn: That part.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: to play devil's advocate, I do feel like Before. Amazon officially came out with their headshots. I don't know if it leaked or whatever happened with the rumors, but the headshots that were initially released.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: were poor headshots of both of these actors.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Once you look at these actors and
Jordyn: For sure.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Some real life artists are drawing these. actors as these characters is going to be incredible please just
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Give.
Jordyn: Well...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know the benefit of the doubt to rebecca to these creators to these actors look at their previous work go watch it see what they've done it's not about it is about what they look like but that's not the end game when it comes to a live action adaptation the acting skills
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: mm -hmm
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And we're going to have CGI. We're going to have dragons.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like, just relax.
Jordyn: Well... Also you guys hair and makeup departments are a thing
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Like, they're like, oh, her hair's not the same. I'm like, yeah, she's gonna wear a wig. Like, duh.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: 100%.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: We have to use our brains.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: There. Yeah. And like, there's no way.
Jordyn: We have to turn our brains on, you guys, please.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. 100 % a wig because of the ombre that her hair does like the color dyes at the ends and that there's no way you could just dye her hair that way with like and have it be consistent so like 100 % she's gonna be in a wig 100 % they're gonna
Jordyn: Mhm.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: cut his hair shave his beard at last like or was it just a mustache i think that was a thing that a lot of people were hanging on oh he has a mustache i'm like you don't think he can Fucking shave it.
Jordyn: Yeah. Whatever. Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like, relax.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Relax.
Jordyn: Right.
Jordyn: like he's gonna go to the wax salon it's gonna get taken care of calm down yeah and i mean here's the thing is this is a typical fandom reaction for any and all fandoms right like when percy jackson was announced and they cast walker scobell he doesn't look like logan lerman he doesn't percy jackson has dark hair
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Like, okay, have you seen this kid act? That's Percy Jackson, brother!
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: Hey, that's literally him. That's actually right with Annabeth. Annabeth's not black. Okay. But Leosava Jeffries is actually Annabeth, though. So shut up. And with Harry Potter, all the recasting that has to happen for Harry Potter.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: This guy's not Alan Rickman. This lady's not Maggie Smith. Yes, we know. What? hair makeup costuming like It's okay, you guys.
Jordyn: please just relax at the end of the day. Like, and we said this when we talked about Harry Potter and, you know, especially the, the Snape casting and stuff. At the end of the day, these are fantasy stories.
Jordyn: They're make -believe. They're not real. calm down.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.
Jordyn: It's simply not that deep. I understand this is your favorite series. It's got you back into reading. Fourth wing saved my life. I get it. I've been there. I get it.
Jordyn: It's also still... a movie or a show. It's okay.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And these are real people like you are attacking these people's looks that they can't change what there's there's a rule where it's like if they can't change it in 12 seconds or something like that, then don't say anything.
Jordyn: Right. Yeah.
Jordyn: Mm -hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So like.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The... These are real people that you guys are tearing apart. So just shh.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Let's wait until they're in costume and hair and makeup.
Jordyn: Right. Like once the first season of the show. comes out if it's terrible acting if it's like twilight level cringe acting directing like Terribleness.
Jordyn: Then, hey, I'll be right there with you guys saying that they shouldn't have cast these people. We should have done things differently, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: That's fine until we actually see it. We need to calm down.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Please and thank you.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The odds are in the favor of Sunrise on the reaping. as early box office projections estimate an opening weekend of more than $60 million domestically, with some analysts predicting over $70 million and more optimistic forecasts reaching $100 million.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That would put the film ahead of its 2023's Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which opened at $44 .6 million, although Catching Fire still holds the franchise's record with $158 million domestic debut. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the film follows a young Hamish Abernathy played by Joseph Zeta during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. The film hits... theaters november 20th as we mentioned earlier with advance ticket sales already underway in its first trailer
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Having drawn an impressive 109 million views in its first 24 hours. I've said it before. I'll say it again. This is my favorite of the Hunger Games trilogy or not trilogy, but series.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I can see why Ballad like Ballad wasn't even one of my favorite books. So I can see why that film didn't do as well.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think this one's really going to blow it out of the water.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I really do think I think that it could reach 100. Maybe I'm with the more optimistic forecast here, but Hamish is a fan favorite character.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This book did really well. People are very excited for this movie. The trailer looks incredible. I can't even watch it without getting emotional. I really do think it's gonna hit the higher end here.
Jordyn: Yeah, I definitely agree. Ballad is...
Jordyn: it's a villain origin story so and it's the first one of these like prequel add -ons that Suzanne Collins wrote and and that Frances Lawrence directed for us and so it's like you know people didn't really know what to expect we didn't know like whoa she's announcing a book and a movie at the same time like that's so crazy like it was the first go -around right and again it's a villain origin story like people hate President Snow I don't want to romanticize him I don't want to like I don't want any excuses for him.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Pretty cool.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: uh -huh
Jordyn: Like he's evil. And like, that's that like. All valid things to say, but like. That's why that movie didn't do that well, I think. But this one, this is a beloved character, right? We talked about everybody loves Hamish. Everybody empathizes with Hamish.
Jordyn: We now are familiar with this procedure of announcing a book in the movie at the same time. The casting in this movie is literally... almost entirely fan casted like i remember when they announced the bug people were like oh
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: uh i can't think of their names right now but like this person should play plutarch hey he's playing plutarch Elle Fanning should be playing Effie. Hey, she's playing Effie. McKenna Gray should be Maisley. She's Maisley. all these various actors that were fan cast actually got the parts. So there's a lot of hype around this versus, again, you had an unknown playing young President Snow. You had...
Jordyn: lucy gray you know i think she had done one or two she had done west side story before But like. This was her second big film, you know, so relatively new people versus these big names that we all know and appreciate and respect.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: So, yeah, I think this movie, if there was ever going to be a movie to come close to Catching Fire, it's going to be this one. People say that this one and Catching Fire are already very similar with the quarter quells with, you know.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: we learn about this game in hunger games so if anything is going to catch catching fire is going to be this one. And I hope it does. I'm excited.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: i'm very excited yeah this is definitely gonna be you know, higher on my list is sunrise we already talked about the battle of November 20th sunrise is what I'm going to be seeing and then saving Percy Jackson for either Friday or or the weekend but
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: yeah yeah and we're so close now the fact that it like as of this recording it's November 1st so we have like it's a countdown it's sunrise of the reaping month like we're so close so yeah the hype is really really real right now
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm. 20 days.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Exactly. something else that a lot of fans have been waiting for not of the Hunger Games but of Bridgerton is a limited prequel series featuring young Violet Bridgerton And her romance with Edmund. Of course, this. These are the parents of the Bridgertons, the father.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: died before our stories began. And everybody said after the success of Queen's Charlotte, the next prequel they would want to see is Violet and Edmund. And we are finally getting that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This, of course, is based on the world created by Julia Quinn. We have had four of the eight main Bridgerton. books. turned into series at this point with the one prequel of course queen charlotte which is my personal favorite of all the seasons So I'm excited to see how this violet one falls into.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: my top my rankings here. But it's a fun little Netflix series.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And yeah, I'm really excited to see what they do with this story.
Jordyn: Yeah, Violet Bridgerton is my favorite. bridgerton character i like when i'm watching it i'm texting my friends or you or you and chris i'm like i just love violet and lady danbury together like they're my favorites like enter
Jordyn: Yeah, Milo's my favorite, so I'm so excited about this. I think... Just an early prediction, this will probably end up being my favorite season of a Bridgerton story. but yeah i'm very very excited for this i'm glad that they're doing it So we get to see.
Jordyn: I like how you said it's like, you know, a nice little Netflix show as if it's not going to be like incredibly devastating, knowing that it's going to be like the most epic romance we've seen in this British universe.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I was just about to say.
Jordyn: And it's going to end in tragedy like. Yeah, totally just a little Netflix show.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. That's what I was about to say. Do they, where do they end? Do they end with their wedding? Do they end with his death? Like, where are they going to end it? Because. Korean Charlotte was like, I cried at the end of Korean Charlotte because of how bittersweet it is and how.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: God, they're so in love and like they're under the bed. I'm gonna cry just thinking about it, but it's like one of my favorite favorite scenes in any romance is the two of them under the bed and it flashes back between the sets of actors in the different ages.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But this one, if they carry through the story to his death and you see that after this love story, like we know. i guess we knew how crane charlotte was going to end too but like this is going to be a whole nother level of like emotional damage
Jordyn: I. Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah, what I would like to see for maximum emotional damage is we take it all the way up to the day of edmund's death because we've already seen that right we've from anthony's point of view during his season but like we have seen edmund dying and the effect that it had on violet and how she went catatonic and then the birth of hyacinth and how traumatic that was for her and for anthony like we we have seen the aftermath of his death so i would love to see
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: everything and then it's like oh you know darling i'm going for a walk in the garden
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hm.
Jordyn: And then... you know you just see like a bee
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Ugh.
Jordyn: on on the screen and then that's the end of it and just like because we already again like we already it's a prequel we already all know exactly what's going to happen where the story is going to end how tragic it is so just Like...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: knowing that it's coming and that anticipation of like oh are they going to show it again are we going to have to live through that again and it's like everything is happy and then you see the bee. it's like No!
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. I kind of feel, though, that could be the penultimate, like the cliffhanger of the penultimate episode.
Jordyn: I think that would be horrifying
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And then the final episode. is the aftermath and her grief and her overcoming the grief because like you said the first time we saw it was through anthony's
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: point of view. So to see her point of view and her thoughts and feelings.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: through the death. Because I do feel like, I don't know. Because I feel like if they're going to include the death in any way. They need to show her grief. Or they need to end with happy ever after, even though we know it's not happy ever after.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: we need to end with like their wedding, because we don't really know.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I haven't read all the books, but we don't really know. There. you know, the process of their love story.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We just know that it was an epic love.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But even... even before like they had several children or eight seven seven children before
Jordyn: mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: his death so even a couple episodes of their life together and the children seeing that great love because all the children talk about the great love so again it will be really interesting to see how much
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: of their like when their story ends
Jordyn: Yeah, I mean you can even have like up to like the first half of the season. And then afterward is like the death.
Jordyn: And then afterwards is the grief and like. then you can flash back and show even more detail of when he was alive and they were young and falling in love and then contrasting it with watching her children fall in love right and you can draw the parallels.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's true. Wow, and you think about Queen Charlotte, that was too... timelines also.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So you're absolutely right.
Jordyn: raise.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: They could do that.
Jordyn: Yeah. And just like drawing the parallels like, oh, I see, you know, Daphne and the Duke like going through this situation, this conversation.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.
Jordyn: I remember when Edmund and I had a similar thing and then you flashback and that's part of her grieving process and like. her like moving forward is you know getting to live relive her own love story i'm gonna cry through her children and getting to like see as a mother like getting to see them be happy she's like yes like yes i'm devastated yes it's so tragic that my husband died but also like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: We were so in love and that was so beautiful. And like just being able to relive the good parts of her life with him through her kids, I think would be really magical.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm. Yeah. Yeah.
Jordyn: I love Violet Bridgerton.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Thank you. I think you just hit the nail on the head.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Honestly, I would be really surprised if that's not the route they go with what you said. With Queen Charlotte, we had our current timeline and we were seeing Violet and Lady Danbury, but also Queen Charlotte.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: and George. And then flashing back to Queen Charlotte and George and even Violet and Dame Danbury and their flashbacks too.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think the current timeline or even like seeing, like you said. Violet. Seeing Daphne. And then Antony and Colin.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And what? Benedict. And Francesca.
Jordyn: Mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know she got married also so like seeing like you said and flashing back like getting that Series of events. Even though the Daphne and everything would be a little bit of flashbacks too, but then...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I just think. That's really good storytelling.
Jordyn: Yeah. Put me in the writer's room.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But again, where are we ending? But yeah, super excited for that. And of course. The Francesca season is coming up soon.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Speaking of Netflix, they have released the first poster and trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia, The Magician's Nephew, based on the 1955 novel by C .S. Lewis, which is the sixth book published in the Chronicles of Narnia series, but the first chronologically. The trailer introduces Meryl Streep as the voice of Aslan, Emma Mackey as Jadis, the White Witch, and Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It has already amassed over 481 million views in its first seven days, more than doubling the first week trailer views for Griggs Barbie. The film follows Diggory and Polly as they discover magical worlds and witness the creation of Narnia, making the first screen adaptation of this particular novel after three previous Chronicles of Narnia films adapted.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: other books in the series. The movie will premiere in IMAX and theaters on February 12th with the movie airing on Netflix on April 2nd.
Jordyn: So many thoughts, you know, we've talked about this before with Narnia. In and of itself, the trailer looks sick. It looks really cool visually. The color and the brightness of it is really intriguing.
Jordyn: But. And we all know this about me. I am very much a traditionalist when it comes to adaptations. Like I want.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: and and not just for narnia for for all adaptations like you have the book just follow the book line by line scene by scene like that's what i want from an adaptation and this is so different
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: intentionally right like she has like Greta Gerwig we know she's a great filmmaker she has a very clear vision for this story and it's so different from like mine and like other like traditional visions of the story that I really just don't know what to think like I've watched the trailer multiple times and I'm like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: Dang, it looks really cool! But also it's... Doesn't look like Narnia doesn't look like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: The Narnia that I have in my head and my preconceived notions are not lining up. And so I think I'm. I'm still where I was before the trailer which is I'm gonna have to wait and see it until I can pass judgment or not because just because and two things can be true at the same time it could be a really cool movie and look really great and like the acting and direction could be great
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: And it could be a bad adaptation. Like those things can be true at the same time.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: And so I just, we just don't know. So I'm going to continue to sit here. making this face and looking nervous until I can see it.
Jordyn: But I am reserving judgment until I see it.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I have two thoughts because... I feel like when you do her. adaptation you can go one of two ways you can do a faithful adaptation and be as strict as possible.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Or you go. balls to the wall is crazy, which I think is what she's doing here. And like you said, it could be a great app.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It could be a great movie. Now, whether or not it's a great adaptation. is to be said, to be seen.
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Because. we you know barbie was an adaptation but it was a great film so it's you can't say can greta do an adaptation well or not it also depends on what
Jordyn: Didn't she do? Didn't she do Little Women?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh, the women, little women. And I didn't see it.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So I don't know.
Jordyn: Me neither.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't think I don't think it was.
Jordyn: Me neither.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: well received as an adaptation.
Jordyn: From that standpoint, it was great. But if you read the text of Little Women, it's not like the characterization of the girls is different here and there.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Didn't see it. So this is all, you know, what I heard on the interwebs.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Peer say.
Jordyn: This is all hearsay from the interwebs, but like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And as we've mentioned, the interwebs are not always nice.
Jordyn: But again, like.
Jordyn: This is true. This is so true But like, you know, so if that's her. like mo when it comes to adaptations is taking a property and like intentionally and thoughtfully but still turning it on its head you know I...
Jordyn: can predict that I probably won't like it that much because that's not the type of adaptation that I prefer to see.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: But again, it could still be a great movie. It could still look cool and have a sick soundtrack the way that the trailer does. But. that's not the adaptation that I am desiring to see and therefore I probably am not going to like it very much and that's okay.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. And the thing is, well, you did say this is not the Narnia. that you want to see and I think to be fair we haven't really seen Narnia Because.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: In the trailer, we haven't seen Aslan create, at least the trailer. There's only been one trailer, right?
Jordyn: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't think that we've seen Narnia because they are going through different worlds.
Jordyn: Correct.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: They come back to England. And then they go...
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: and meet Aslan and Aslan creates Narnia. Maybe.
Jordyn: Yes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: When we get to Narnia and we get to Aslan and we've got confirmation now that Meryl Streep is Aslan. But again, let's see what happens. and yeah i think you're right i mean i want to like this because i loved barbie so much And I want to have faith in her.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And the trailer does look cool. Like you said, I've heard, you know, people have likened it to Doctor Who, which I like Doctor Who.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But the book doesn't give us Doctor Who vibes. But also the book was so old. So like it was a completely different time when this was written.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And she's making a film for 2027. So.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Let's just see what happens.
Jordyn: Yeah. Well, and just to really, I'll try to be really quick, know about Meryl Streep as Aslan. Like I've been on the record saying that I don't like it because Aslan is like, you see as Lewis, according to him, like it's literally Jesus and it should be a man, blah, blah, blah.
Jordyn: They did voice modulation. to make it sound like I guess. androgynous or like not she doesn't sound like Meryl Streep so in that case like Why bother casting Meryl Streep if you're just going to change her voice so she doesn't sound like Meryl Streep? That to me feels like an intentionally controversial choice just for the sake of...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, two thoughts there.
Jordyn: controversy and like getting people to talk about it and i'm like that seems stupid to me like we could have
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Like... Because I think a lot of people would have been a lot more. excited. to start with and a lot more open to this new concept from the get -go without that specific point of contention being there.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. So two thoughts, a name recognition and.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The controversy itself is getting people talking about it.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like Meryl Streep is going to bring in people. the controversy people are going to watch it to see what the hell and then But also. Oh.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Acting isn't just. facial. expression it's a big part of it but voice acting is an entirely different field of acting
Jordyn: Yeah. Totally.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: with that said why not just get a voice actor but
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know bring it back big name brings in the audience.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: with them adjusting her voice, like there's still the inflections, there's still the tone, there's still the way you speak that Meryl Streep.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: brings to the table. And I mean,
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Again, we've mentioned it before, but in Project Hail Mary. They said Meryl Streep can do nowhere wrong. And. That. puppeteer is now getting a nomination they're they're campaigning for him to get a nomination for best supporting actor so like and you don't see his face it's a puppet but it's his voice so there's so much to
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: using your voice and how you use your voice that Maybe Meryl Streep was the best. candidate for what they want to do with this character in this adaptation but again
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Time will tell. I could eat my words.
Jordyn: We'll see. I... I just would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Or like... Just like. buzzing around in Greta Gerwig's mind, like why? just these choices and specifically this, like that choice of Meryl Streep. I'm just like. Why? Why?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. Well, and maybe it's as simple as.
Jordyn: want to know the motivation because like if you said If it is genuinely because they thought.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, it
Jordyn: we need It has to be Meryl Streep for XYZ reasons. She's going to do the best job for this voice acting, blah, blah, blah. cool like i I will continue to sit back and reserve judgment. But if they did it on purpose to stir up controversy.
Jordyn: that. doesn't sit well with me you know
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I don't think that's the main reason I said that just because. we all know controversy look what happened with fourth ring controversy is going to stir up look papa we're going to talk about him in a little bit controversy is going to stir up the conversation it's going to be the buzzwords that get people to click on things.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But it might not be the main reasoning behind something. And I was going to say, she might, Greta might have been watching something with Meryl Streep in it. Meryl Streep might've said a line and she might've been like, that's my Aslan.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So. You know, we just don't know. Like you said. We're not in her mind. yeah time will tell we have to watch it we're gonna watch it and then we'll find out if we like it or not
Jordyn: Going to watch it. Yeah. I'm so nervous about it
Sarah-Daye McDougall: You can be, you can be nervous, but just keep an open mind. You know, and that's not just telling Jordan that I'm telling our entire audience.
Jordyn: Yes, always.
Jordyn: Yeah. If I can keep an open mind with this, you guys, then you can too. And we'll just cringe in the theater together.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. All right. So probably some more cringe coming up. Lots of updates in the. Wizarding World. HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series has announced several new cast members, including Hannah Chin and Jasper Talbot as Lily and James Potter.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Harry Gilbey as Charlie Weasley, a character left out of the original films. additional account. Casting includes David. Threlfall as the voice of the Sorting Hat, Leo Bill as Nearly Headless Nick,
Sarah-Daye McDougall: andrew book as the bloody
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Sorry, that was a mouthful. Andrew Brooke. as the Bloody Baron, Daniel Fearn as the Frat Friar, and Laura Smythe as the Fat Lady.
Jordyn: There you go.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The first season, Adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is set to premiere on December 25th. HBO and HBO Max. Wow season two. adapting the chamber of secrets is already in production
Sarah-Daye McDougall: separately the bbc has commissioned a two -part documentary about jk rowling herself exploring her rise from struggling writer to creator of the harry potter phenomenon as well as the controversies surrounding her public views on gender identity feminism and free speech the documentary will feature archival footage and interviews with people who have worked with rowling although her direct participation has not been confirmed
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Speaking of casting and controversies, Papa will portray Severus Snape, has addressed the backlash surrounding his casting and his advocacy for transgender rights, acknowledging the strong reactions while emphasizing his commitment to the role and the support he's received from the production team.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We've also gotten... a recent poster. which... mirrors the last poster of the films which is really cool and people anticipate the last season. marrying this poster but it's a shot of harry close up his eyes with his glasses his scars seen and hogwarts is in the reflection of his glasses and there is a small glimmer Of light.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: reflecting off the glasses that is green. so it's just a lot of good detail in this poster A lot, a lot, a lot of Harry Potter news.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Thoughts?
Jordyn: A lot a lot of Harry Potter news. all these castings look great i'm excited about everybody i'm excited you know again we talked about the benefits of doing a show you can really take your time so to include charlie weasley and like all the these ghosts like as
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: full characters like we've got nearly headless nick but like to have an actual bloody baron because there is some more that comes up with him later on in the series and then you get to see the fat friar and the fat lady and like really fleshing out this cast and It's exciting, you know.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: To have everybody. kind of coming together. They're already working on Chamber of Secrets, which is great because I know that's always a big fear in this day and age is like, are they going to cancel after one season? So the fact that they're already in production for season two is great.
Jordyn: they they just have to continue all the way through at this point like we we have to be locked in
Sarah-Daye McDougall: They will. Yeah. I think there's enough fandom.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I mean, we've talked about the controversy of this series. since day one, but I think there's enough of the fandom newer fandoms that will keep this afloat.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And you know, it just is what it is with the, with the JKR stuff aside, there's still. I think there's just enough. people that are going to watch it i mean it's hbo
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: it's warner brothers i you know i just yeah
Jordyn: Mhm.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: They'll make it through.
Jordyn: Yeah, I hope so. And then yeah, I mean... We don't need to get into all the JKR stuff.
Jordyn: It's just so well known at this point that I don't think either of us really is going to have anything new to add.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mmm. Well, the biggest thing I'm curious. Like it says, there's no confirmation on if she's involved in this.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: documentary. So that's my thought. is this. pro jkr or is this anti -jkr like what is this documentary trying to say
Jordyn: Right. Right. I mean, that's going to be really interesting to see if she's not involved. Is it just going to be like a smear campaign without and without any like, you know, well, here's where she's coming from, like any sort of.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: not even defense, but just explanation, like in -depth explanation directly from her, her thoughts and opinions on things. But on the other hand, if she is directly involved and she's part of the production, is now everything just going to be like, she's so wonderful and awesome and there's no controversy whatsoever.
Jordyn: And like, like brushing over the fact.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: that there is controversy surrounding her. There's pros and cons to her being uninvolved and being involved. And so I think they have a really...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Sure.
Jordyn: Eh. Because ultimately, this is like... journalism right like this sort of documentary about her is journalism and therefore like i want to see very
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Unbiased.
Jordyn: Even keeled, unbiased, fact -based.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes.
Jordyn: You can go through her tweets. She said X, Y, and Z things. Now, this is where I would want to hear directly from her. What is your thought process when you say these? It's a tweet, right?
Jordyn: Can you expand more on this instead of just saying the most controversial thing just to get likes and retweets?
Jordyn: You know what I mean?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: Yep. I would be interested in watching it just because like, you know, we grew up with Harry Potter, like our how radically different would the world be without this woman and without the.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: the creation of her mind right like The world is a much darker place, I think, without Harry Potter. And so, like, no matter what she says or does. we always as fans of Harry Potter. you know the characters the story we always have to thank her because we wouldn't have it without her But that's a really tough place to be in.
Jordyn: you know, for some people when she says the things that she says, you know, and then it's tough for other people who, you know, you agree with her.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: you can't say that you agree with her because of the political climate we're involved in. It's just, it's very complicated. And Harry Potter has become this thing where, you know, people have, you know, self banned from watching it and like they're, they're boycotting Harry Potter.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: They won't spend money. They won't watch. They won't participate in it, even though they loved it. I've heard of people who had tattoos that are getting their tattoos removed because they are so vehemently disagree with her.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: And it's like, we, it's so hard to.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Separating the art from the artist, yeah.
Jordyn: It's hard, but I think we have to, to at least some degree, right?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: And everybody has their own line of where they can separate.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, you mentioned like... you can't say that you agree with her without being attacked. And that's true. But you also Can't say. Yeah, I'm going to watch this Harry Potter HBO show. I'm excited about this Harry Potter HBO show without like being, oh, well, you don't support trans rights.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like I do.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I understand what you're saying. I want everybody to live the life. They want to live. And I want everybody to shut up about. What's not affecting you But I can also still be excited about a TV show that I grew up with the series.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: have a lot of problems with the movies, as great as the movies are.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: and want to see a show do well like this is the very
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: foundation of this podcast.
Jordyn: Mm -hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: is books to screen and so like I want to talk about it
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah. I... It's a challenging. world right now to it's a challenging topic but it's a challenging world to be a fangirl right now because everybody's got controversy like she's probably the biggest most well -known but like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: topic. Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm. Okay.
Jordyn: you know even like Sarah we're talking about ACOTAR earlier Sarah J Maas has controversy people are like haven't you heard we're boycotting SJM I'm like not in my house girl I'm buying everything like not in my house you know and it's so it's like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: And so at some point, like I. The way I personally deal with it is I'm like, there's the. Political Opinions Jordan, and there's Fangirl Jordan.
Jordyn: They don't know each other. They don't talk to each other. Fangirl Jordan is excited about Harry Potter. She wants to watch Harry Potter. She wants to. read SJM and watch and do and all all the fangirl things and then political jordan's over here thinking about political things.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: And there are two different... They're separate.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: They're not together. Because if I didn't watch or read or listen to things because I disagree with politics, I wouldn't be able to watch, listen,
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I've stopped shopping there. But...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: what would we have?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: HBO has officially ordered an eight episode sequel series to Crazy Rich Asians based on Kevin Kwan's best selling trilogy, which includes Crazy Rich Asians.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: China rich girlfriend and rich people problems. While only the first novel has been adapted into the hit 2018 film, a new series will continue the story with original stars Constance Wu,
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Henry Golding, Ronnie Chang, and Michelle Yao returning to their roles. Original film co -writer Adele Lim will serve as showrunner with director John M. Chu returning as executive producer and production expected to begin in 2027.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This film holds a special little place in my heart because... The week of my wedding. is when this film came out and I had to go to a different city for, I think like to pick up my dress or to pick up a gift or something. But I also had.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: an appointment in there. And it was about a city an hour away at two tasks. But these two tasks were at like three hours apart from each other. And I'm like, what am I going to do in between this time?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And crazy rich. Asians was in the theater. So I went and I saw this film. By myself. And I loved it. It was a beautiful film. The Mahjong scene lives rent free in my head. If you know, you know. And so I'm so excited to see this series be picked up to continue the story. Almost a decade later. Like it's almost like a 10 year anniversary present to myself.
Jordyn: Yeah. that's fun yeah I have seen it I only watched it. within the last couple of years i just randomly saw it like on netflix or something i was like oh yeah i heard good things about this let's check it out i also love it so i'm excited that we're gonna get more in that world I'm learning more about like that Southeast Asian culture.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm
Jordyn: And, you know, I'm part Filipino and I have like. Not a lot of connection with that culture and that side of me so and obviously like they're not in the philippines But just like.
Jordyn: Anything in that part of the world, getting to see it on screen is really cool. So I'm glad that they're moving forward and expanding on that. Especially when there's more books to...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Exactly.
Jordyn: basic off of.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Paramount Pictures has acquired the film rights to Red Rising, the best -selling dystopian science fiction series by Pierce Brown, with Francis Lawrence known for directing multiple Hunger Games films attached to direct.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think that's the piece that I am most excited about. The story follows.
Jordyn: Yes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: darrow a young miner on mars who discovers that his people have been enslaved by the ruling gold cast and infiltrates their society to bring it down from within The series currently consists of six published novels with a seventh and final book.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: red god still to come justin rhodes who you'll know from terminator dark fate will write the screenplay with brown serving as executive producer after several previous attempts to adapt the series for film and television fell through this marks a fresh start for the franchise although no casting or release date has been announced as of yet
Jordyn: I'm going to read Red Rising now because like I was it was always like in my head like oh you know you'd probably like it like people have recommended it to me.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: They're making a movie and Francis Lawrence is directing it. I'm going to be sad.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: A hundred percent in.
Jordyn: The theater employees are scared because the movie has not even been made yet, but I am sat in that theater for it, girl.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.
Jordyn: So yes, I will be reading Red Rising specifically for that. Francis Lawrence, we know him. We love him. He's a great director.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: right with well how well he handled the hunger games like i have no doubt that this is going to be a great film that he did he and a great adaptation
Jordyn: Yes, I'm very excited. And then, of course, you know, having Pierce Brown as an executive producer, that I'm sure means he'll be in the writer's room participating in that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep.
Jordyn: And that always, you know, I've been on record saying that before, like that always makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside when the authors are involved with the scripts and the production of their adaptations.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: So. Yes, I'm on board. I'm set. I'm ready to go. Bring it on.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I couldn't agree more. Amazon MGM Studios has acquired the film adaptation. adaptation of Butcher and Blackbird. Bye. Breen Weber.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: the first novel in her best -selling Ruminous Love trilogy, with plans to release the movie on Prime Video. Emma Laird. who you'll know from Mayor of Kingstown, will star as Sloane Sutherland.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: alongside thomas doherty from gossip girl or tell me lies as rowan kane two rival serial killers who target other serial killers and develop an unexpected romance through their deadly competition. The novel...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: became a book talk sensation, helping Weaver's Books sell more than 5 million copies worldwide. And as followed. by Leather and Lark. and Scythe and Sparrow.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Chris McKay. is attached to direct with Weaver serving as executive producer, although no release date has been announced.
Jordyn: It's another one that I fear I'm going to have to read now. I've seen it all over BookTok. I'm not as into like these dark romance type things.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I didn't think you were.
Jordyn: So I'm not, but I'm like. the concept is kind of intriguing of like serial killers who kill other serial killers it's like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right? A little Dexter action.
Jordyn: Yeah, it's like, how do you... I'm now I'm curious, like from a psychological perspective, like how do you justify that to yourself?
Jordyn: Like what they're doing is wrong, but you're doing. But I'm doing the same thing, and when I do it, it's okay.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: That's fascinating to me, but it's very popular on BookTok. so And then again. Author as an executive producer.
Jordyn: I don't... I don't think I've seen The Tomorrow War or Renfield, which are Chris McKay's other films that he's directed.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I haven't either.
Jordyn: So I'm not as confident or sat for this as I am for Red Rising. But... Again, going back to how we talked earlier, you know, all adaptations at this point are good adaptations. bringing the energy lifting all the boats you know get more adaptations made.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I agree with you. This is not something that I would normally pick up. the Horror, dark romance, thriller isn't my go -to. I've read a handful.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But... like you said this is such an interesting concept I did watch almost the entirety of Dexter. I could get down with this. It does seem interesting. Bonnie and Clyde -esque.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I definitely, of course, want to read it before we watch it. yeah i'll finish dcc and then i'll go to red rising and then i'll start this
Jordyn: Along with all the other things we have to read and reread in between.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, yeah, yeah. oh lots of lots of reading for us in our future but that keeps us the podcast going so I won't complain all right up next last but not least netflix is developing a new film
Jordyn: hooray Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: adaptation of hatchet Gary Polson's beloved 1987 young adult survival novel with Derek. Cyan France. attached to write and direct. He was attached to Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines, and Roofman.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The story follows 13 year old Brian Robeson, who survives a plane crash only to find himself stranded alone in the Canadian wilderness, armed with nothing but a hatchet. that his mother gave him. The Newbery Honor -winning novel became a classroom staple and eventually grew into a five -book series, including The River,
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Brian's winter. Brian's Return, and Brian's Hunt. This actually won't be the first screen adaptation of Hatchet. The book was previously adapted into the 1990 television movie A Cry in the Wild.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: starring jared rushton paulson's estate is closely involved in the new netflix project having helped select scion france after keeping the adaptation rights off the market for years.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And Andrew Mittman, whose production company is behind Netflix's Wednesday, will produce. No casting or release date has been announced.
Jordyn: I feel like I have a vague memory of reading this in elementary school. but like it's not very clear. in my mind.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: but
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't think we did this. I don't. This does not ring any bells.
Jordyn: Yeah, but it's... It's kind of it feels like it's along the same lines of like a way of the warrior kid type vibe of like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: just young men. trying to figure out How to be. men, you know, young boys figuring out how to be men, healthy. you know good masculine men. And I... I wonder if this is going to be an ongoing trend where we're going to see even more stories like this.
Jordyn: like the timing of this is interesting and the estate, like specifically choosing this director. I haven't, I've seen roof man. Which was interesting. It's based on a true story, though.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: very much set in like the real world and like it's a survival story but it's still fiction so i'm I'm intrigued. by this.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I was.
Jordyn: I'm intrigued by this.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, Blue Valentine and I think The Place Beyond the Pines both star Ryan Gosling. And I've been. well talked about.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I haven't seen either, but you know, in my Ryan Gosling research, a lot of people talk about how good those movies are.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So.
Jordyn: Okay.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And you've seen Roof Man. So I think that it's in good hands. I want to check out maybe Blue Valentine or The Place Beyond the Pines. It's been something I've wanted to see for a long time just because of Gosling's acting. And I think that's where he met his wife.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's a movie that I've wanted to check out for a long time, so I'll have to check it out so I can see this.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: this directing and Of course, read the book and see. I don't think I ever saw A Cry in the Wild. But yeah, another just, you know. Like you said.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Man. Finding himself story.
Jordyn: Yeah. But I think it's, I mean, there's so much, again, just all these real world conversations we're having today. Like there's so much to talk about. toxic masculinity and healthy masculinity and like real men and bad men and you know I choose the bear over the man, you know, like all these sorts of things. So I think like.
Jordyn: It's a very interesting trend to me to have this being made and then way of the warrior kid coming out and then potentially like more stories in this vein, you know, coming up just being like, Hey, no, like, you know, you're.
Jordyn: men like What is a man? What makes a man a man and not just a male of the species?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: what does it look like to be a good man and like a strong man? Like all of these things that are very like, woo, like up here kind of thoughts, like to bring it down for a 13 year old so that they can follow and see like, oh no, I need to be, I want to be brave.
Jordyn: I want to be strong. I want to have self -discipline. I think that. there are certainly worse messages for young boys to be getting and so you know I'm kind of into this.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I will be interested to see the difference. Like what does the 19... an 87 story Book.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: say versus what the 2027 film is going to say because our culture is a lot different there is a lot more about toxic masculinity out there so like
Jordyn: Yeah. Oh yeah. Yep.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Is there any, like, what does the book say? From the 80s. And is it? Is it? a good man and then what is this like will the movie change anything so i i'm very interested to see what exactly the message is in both of these
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: mediums.
Jordyn: Well, and even just the perception the 40 year gap between what, what makes a good man in 1987 versus what makes a good man in 2027 is going to be really interesting to see how they do that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Exactly. Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I wonder also if they'll set it in modern times. like obviously he didn't have a cell phone in 1998 1987 so
Jordyn: Yeah, or they'll take it back
Sarah-Daye McDougall: If he has a cell phone, if it's set in today's. setting like How do they break this up? Like, how do they?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Get rid of these. I know it's a plane. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: yeah yeah yeah and it's also easy to just not talk about the time like if you're just lost in the woods but just that kind of thing like
Jordyn: that's easy taken care of.
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It is like, it's just, it is a different time. you know.
Jordyn: Yeah. Totally.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know just like yeah Anyway. That's all we have for you guys today. Yeah, follow along.
Jordyn: No more real world stuff.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: See?
Jordyn: Go read a book.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, follow along. We're on. sub stack we're on instagram we're on book talk now book talk we're on tiktok now to me it is i i am the one i don't have tiktoks there was a long story about how i couldn't get back into my account whatever i am on the
Jordyn: it's booked it's just book talk
Sarah-Daye McDougall: book watch TikTok is what I use. And it is strictly. author content and book content. We have nothing else over there. So it's fun. But yeah, so go follow us on those. We will be releasing.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Breaking Dawn. on Friday and then we will be re -releasing The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson's leading up to the end of the month so Stay tuned for all that and we'll see you soon.
