Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hello, on this episode of Book Watch, we are watching Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, or Sorcerer's Stone for us U .S. folks. This was written in 1997 by J .K. Rowling.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Twenty... No. And its 2001 adaptation was directed by Chris Columbus. The film did use the US title of Sorcerer's Stone. and was adapted by Steve Kloves.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: The audio book has a few different narrations, Jim Dale and Stephen Fry being the one we all grew up with. And there is now a full cast audio version on Audible.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I'm Sarah Daye.

Chris: And I'm Chris.

Jordyn: And I'm Jordan.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And we will get started after these messages.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: All right. Welcome back, everybody. So. I don't think we need to give too much introduction to Harry Potter. It is a cultural phenomenon. It was created around the same time the internet was picking up steam, so it created all these online communities.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Of course, it got the movies. We had midnight releases. We had the online forums. There's so many podcasts about Harry Potter. There's a whole amusement park about Harry Potter. And obviously it is continuing with the HBO show coming out in December. Of course, it is, for those of you that don't know the story behind Harry Potter, it is a little boy, a little orphan boy who was

Sarah-Daye McDougall: sent to live with his aunt and uncle who were not nice people. Only to discover 11 years later that he is in fact a wizard and he goes off to the wizarding school of Hogwarts where he meets his two besties, Ron and Hermione. And we'll get into.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: the whole relationship between Hermione and the boys. As our discussion continues. Cause they were off to a rocky start, but he also meets his arch nemesis.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Draco Malfoy. before going through all these trials. and seeing Voldemort at the end of the book who is the dark lord and responsible for his parents deaths and a lot more deaths. We we're going to cover this book in one episode. This is our primer episode for the show coming out in a few months.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And. I guess I'll run through the cast real quick and then we can kind of talk about the themes of Harry Potter, specifically what is.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: told in the Sorcerer's Stone and what we liked about this movie. uh what we didn't like about this movie and what we think the show is you know like what the show can do better and what the reason behind having this show is there's a lot of controversy behind it is it too soon blah blah blah but i think a lot of the book readers are in agreement that the show can do a much better job of adapting the true story.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So. Without further ado.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Harry Potter.

Chris: with the whole... Philosopher's Stone versus Sorcerer's Stone theme. I just... confused and annoyed me for a long time.

Jordyn: Because they thought that Americans were too dumb to know what a philosopher was. So they were like, let's change it to sorcerer so that they know what we're talking about.

Chris: Yeah.

Chris: Now, is the new show?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Which isn't that mainstream of a word either.

Chris: Right.

Jordyn: Right.

Chris: And a lot of Americans have qualms about, you know, that's part of the reason I wasn't allowed to watch these as a kid was because they had wizards and witches in them.

Jordyn: I.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.

Chris: And so. Is sorcerer better than a philosopher at that point?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: we we our teachers were reading this to us in our class as like part of our english class i mean when we say we grew up with harry potter literally

Chris: I digress.

Jordyn: mm -hmm Yeah.

Chris: I would have been taken out of class for that.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's ingrained in every aspect of our lives.

Jordyn: Yeah, my first ever book report that I did for school was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. And I'll cry if I talk about Harry Potter too much.

Jordyn: I have. For Terry Potter tattoos, my... parents house had a whole shrine of harry potter like It is such a huge part of. my life and my upbringing. We were at those midnight releases at Borders Bookstore when they were coming out, midnight releases for the movies. I dressed up as Hermione for multiple Halloweens.

Jordyn: There's nobody that I've ever come across who is like, what's Harry Potter?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: You know what Harry Potter is. it's that big of a thing and so like yeah we have amusement parks and all the you know i got my blanket you guys have all your different copies of books we've got lego sets like there's Harry Potter is alive and well even before this new show got announced

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: you're always going to find Harry Potter something somewhere.

Chris: Yeah, I didn't watch any of them or read the books at all until I was. an adult and all the books were or all the movies were out I bought the Blu -ray box set of all eight of them, and that's when I got my first introduction to Harry Potter, was watching through those.

Chris: So I have a very different experience than you guys did with this.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: How old were you?

Chris: That's interesting.

Jordyn: That's actually crazy.

Chris: Oh. i mean i was an adult so it would have been At least, you know, after I moved out around 19, so.

Jordyn: Wow.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Chris: So.

Jordyn: I simply can't imagine.

Chris: It's a different perspective to come at it with.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Because the movie, right. I mean, and Jordan, you had to have been really, really little because I was 11 when the movie came out.

Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Because I remember specifically, I literally aged with him in the movies.

Jordyn: I was three.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. not have to like I mean like it's kind of like throne of glass for me i didn't discover throne of glass until I was an adult

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And so. having now entered that world of sarah j maas and having to like backtrack that's that's wild because like jordan said like it it's literally ingrained like our your student report my teachers were reading it to us in class and that was like first grade.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I mean, like, I've got one, two, three, four copies of the books. i've got a you know my little hufflepuff stuffy oh literally my coffee mug is hufflepuff It literally becomes, I think I've said literally 10 times, so sorry.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: it becomes so ingrained with your personality. Like they joke a lot.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Look at your wax seal.

Chris: I tried to send that to you with the rest of the stuff I sent you a while back, but it was...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: about

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh.

Chris: One of the things, everything was getting so heavy I had to narrow down some of the stuff.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. What is that? Is that Legos?

Jordyn: It's a nine and three quarter Lego book nook.

Chris: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Perfect.

Chris: That's awesome.

Jordyn: that I've just had sitting on my desk, like Harry Potter's everywhere.

Chris: You got to get a bookshelf in there.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: No, yeah, but he talked about the merch.

Chris: Right in the back there.

Jordyn: I'm trying.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: There's so much. phone covers there's stuffies there's clothes there's cups like The merch doesn't end.

Chris: Nope. And it's always got more stuff coming out. It's a...

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: and we're gonna get

Chris: Always a moneymaker.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: double that when the show comes out because the books are going to get show covers probably like they always do when movies are made.

Jordyn: Mm -hmm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: We're going to get new costumes, you know, like because the seals are going to be different.

Jordyn: mm -hmm

Jordyn: Mm hmm.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's definitely a moneymaker.

Chris: Do you think they'll... With the show, do you think they'll actually redo some of the... other movies too or you know the other stories the Fantastic Beasts stuff, something like that, eventually, too.

Chris: You think they'll end up going all the way through past the movies? the books.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't know that they would do Fantastic Beasts but

Chris: Name books.

Jordyn: No.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: This is... I think the fact that HBO is picking it up. is for the sole purpose of. spinoffs. Like they want to make money. That's why they're making the show over again to make more money.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: and they they can do the marauders they can do the founders they can do the black sisters they can do They can do. newt scamander if they want but i don't think it would be a retelling of the movies they were doing

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I would love.

Chris: Because they did write those as books too, but...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, they made the books after

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: the movies.

Chris: But.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But I would. Love to see Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship in some form, even if it's like an eight episode miniseries. I would like that's what I was most excited about for those films. to see that relationship play out.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So we'll see if they go down that road or not, but I don't think it would involve Newt as much as it did in the movies.

Chris: Sure. I mean, it'd be even better if they could actually like.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: you know, do some flash forward and back with like showing those things during the show a little bit, like if they're in there.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Maybe.

Chris: history or in their magical creatures class and you get a little flashback to Newt doing something with the creatures or, you know. Something like that. I don't know.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't really care so much about Newt.

Chris: They've got a lot more time in a film.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But I want, I definitely want Grindelwald and Dumbledore's relationship fleshed out.

Chris: And those things could be there in different areas.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: But, you know, just a matter of how much more do you want to. pack into this i have a feeling that it's going to go beyond just the books i think they're going to expand the world within the movies but that's not what we're here to talk about so we can get back to the topic at hand the movie that exists right

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Whoa.

Jordyn: Well, just to Just a quick note on that. I hope not

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: At least like. the timing has to be right because like we don't even like hear about Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship till Deathly Hallows so like I don't want to hear anything about that in Sorcerer's Stone show.

Jordyn: That's got nothing to do with anything right now.

Chris: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Me and Ray.

Jordyn: So like. I'm fine having those flashbacks and building more on that relationship when the time is right. I want this show, this Sorcerer's Stone, to just be about...

Chris: Right.

Jordyn: the events of the sorcerer's stone and like maybe some flashbacks of like harry's parents you know because he's learning about how they actually died stuff like that but like all that like deeper like dumbledore lore like i'm it's not necessary right now and like let's let's just stay focused

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I agree and disagree.

Chris: I'd like a little fun mini story when they get the books for Fantastic Beasts, if they're sitting through that class and we get a little bit of a story that's in his book or something. I could see that being a good spot to add that or other...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.

Chris: famous wizards from time having little side stories it is but it's written by him and his experience

Jordyn: It's just a textbook though.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. I don't agree with that. Like this show needs to be a faithful retelling of these books. We don't need to have any random flashbacks, but.

Jordyn: Yes.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: where i disagree with what jordan said was When they were making these films, even when she was writing the books, like we didn't have the full story now we do we have we know from start to finish And not so much flashbacks, but foreshadowing.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Because we know, like...

Jordyn: That's.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: The movie is completely deleted. dobby after book two right and then didn't come back until he dies in book six seven so

Jordyn: True. This is true.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's like... Now you know how important he is in book four and how important we need the winky storyline in season four.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: We need all of that.

Jordyn: For sure.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And that comes back in book six when Ron's like, no, we have to save the house elves. That whole thing, we don't even know in the movies that there's house elves at Hogwarts. so

Jordyn: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: things like that I think that we can include like if season one shows us house elves but like Not that Hermione. Because Hermione can't know about them until book four. But if we see them, because I do think the show is not going to be from Harry's POV. Like we've seen Ron getting his.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hogwarts letter at the borough so we know we're gonna get other scenes that aren't from his point of view, which I'm very excited about. And I think that's what flushes out the world a lot more. But I don't think we need flashbacks like what you're saying, Chris. I do think there's so much potential for that.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: as spinoffs and i don't think hbo is going to leave any money on the floor when it comes to spinoffs and mini series look like look at what they're doing with Game of Thrones right now we've got a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms we've got House of the Dragon I think there's a movie coming out, right? So like.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: They're definitely going to milk this.

Chris: Which is why I think they won't be an exact... uh retelling of the books like we want i think they're going to put new things in there and not I don't think they're going to leave money on the table that way either.

Chris: I think they're going to expand upon the story more than we want them to. I guess that's my perspective on it is I think they're going to ruin the. The integrity of the book.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't think they're gonna ruin it.

Chris: Maybe not room, but I think they're not going to stay as faithful as people want. And I think that's going to ultimately piss people off. And I think that I think there's just too much money at stake to.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well...

Chris: Want to stay. fully true to it.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: No, I... I don't think, okay.

Jordyn: But it's me.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't think they're gonna leave anything.

Jordyn: I'm the people who are going to get pissed off if it's not word for word exactly how I want it to be.

Chris: And I agree that that's the way that people want it to be.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. But even if they add stuff, like you don't.

Chris: but I don't think it's how it's going to be.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: If they cut anything, like I'll be mad if they cut, you know. The fourth book is like the biggest. transgressor of this. cutting stuff out of the book.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: but like So if they cut stuff out of the book, I'm gonna be pissed. If they add stuff that fleshes out the world, I'm not going to be pissed.

Jordyn: Yeah, I think that's fair I... you guys know me i've talked about this you know a hundred million times with other adaptations like you already have a script Just follow it. You already have a story. Just follow it. And so which

Jordyn: You know, but living in reality, that's never going to happen. We're never going to get something that's exactly line for line, word for word, scene by scene. So I agree. Like if they don't cut anything out and we're not losing anything from the book to show adaptation.

Jordyn: then I'll be fine. And if they add stuff, then if it works, it works. And that's the thing like with Percy, like.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: you know, changes that they've made with Percy. As a show, the changes have been working for me. And so, you know, I'm willing to kind of go with it. I am a little nervous because the relationship that this.

Jordyn: that Harry Potter has with its author currently is very not the same as like Rick Riordan being in the writer's room for Percy and so I'm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: Concerned that any changes or additions or whatever that they do make is not going to have JK Rowling's insight and like. backing and so that like This story, I think, is much more well -

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think she's very much involved in the show actually.

Jordyn: Really?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I think that's why. it's getting as much. push back as it is, is because it is still. Her. input and property.

Chris: Well. I think that Warner Brothers has sole control over that part of it at this point.

Chris: i think they bought the full i mean she still has a lot of rights to like she gets money from it but and but i'm pretty sure she sold the whole uh writes to it to Warner Brothers a while back.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: That actually makes me... feel better if she's not in control of the script. and the decisions.

Chris: She is involved as an executive producer and creative consultant, but she is not directly. writing scripts or anything she's not writing the scripts or dial herself but she is she reads and reviews the drafts

Jordyn: writing episodes.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay.

Jordyn: Okay.

Jordyn: Okay. So, I mean...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But I still do think the creators. are here for the fans and they want to make like they everybody understands that book readers. had a lot of problems.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: with the movie adaptations and we want a faithful adaptation. And. Because of the controversy, I don't think they're gonna take a lot of risks. They are okay Okay.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: There's already the controversy with JK Rowling, right? Then when they cast. a black actor as professor snape there was a lot of backlash there.

Jordyn: I was going to say, they're already doing a lot of stuff that's controversial on their own.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: so That's. Right. So...

Jordyn: Yes.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I really don't think they're gonna push. too much more.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I guess it could go both ways. Maybe they maybe okay, they're either not going to push too much more so that they stop. alienating so much of the audience or

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: they're gonna go the opposite and they keep pushing boundaries but they keep promoting this as a faithful adaptation. And if you watched the interview, the little documentary they had.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think it's called Finding Harry. on HBO. You can tell like the creators, like the people that are doing the animatronics, the people that are doing the costuming, they're all, they're all like us who grew up with Harry Potter and they want to see it done well.

Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Regardless of casting, regardless of JKR, they are fans of the books and the story of Harry himself.

Jordyn: I think. rewatching the movie. to record this. like really... I keep flip -flopping. I'm very, it's very easy to change my mind when I'm presented with new evidence.

Jordyn: So like I watched the trailers for the show.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: I'm like, oh, the show looks so good. I'm so excited for it. And then I rewatched this movie that I've grown up with and I'm like, oh. I know it's got its flaws, but like it's so beautiful. It's so precious. Like I don't want to I don't want to ruin That like.

Jordyn: memory and that like nostalgia that I have attached to the movie so I very much am like flip -flopping of like how excited and like my excitement level is changing like it was way up here and now it's kind of back down here and it'll you know continue to fluctuate up until we start actually seeing the show But yeah, I just.

Jordyn: There's there's a lot that can go wrong.

Chris: Do we know if...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: on other changes that they want to make. If this is really the faithful adaptation that they're saying it's going to be.

Chris: Is the story being brought to modern as far as the telling?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: No, it's in the 90s.

Chris: Okay. See, I almost wished it would. you know as we you know people are going to relate more the younger people are going to relate more with a story that comes into more modern like uh is retold in the modern time frame instead of sticking with the same one so that's why i was just you know wondering if they were doing that or not so well it'll probably be fine but

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. I can see that if... the main story happened in the muggle world more but so like Hogwarts in the wizarding world is so dated anyway like they don't have you can't even have electronics at all at Hogwarts so it wouldn't matter.

Jordyn: Yep.

Chris: Right.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So I think once we. I think it adds to... the like wondrous nature of what hogwarts is that it is set in the 90s so like we don't even have

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: cell phones barely in the 90s.

Jordyn: Mm hmm.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And so

Chris: Kids watching this one are going to be like, what's wrong with the photo moving? That's just what my iPad does every day.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Chris: This isn't weird. This isn't magic. This is just technology.

Jordyn: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But still exactly. And like that, when we get into science fiction, you're. you know magic is just science that we can't explain

Chris: Okay, Thor.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know you still they still know what and like Polaroids came out like were real popular again five years ago and they didn't move you know so like there's still the magic of like the newspapers moving and like yeah we don't

Chris: Yeah, it'll be good.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: have newspapers anymore, but...

Chris: I'm...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: again like going back to the wizarding world is still just so dated that they don't have these advancements so it's not going to matter that much that it's still set in the 90s.

Chris: No. I think so. I was just curious. Yeah. I have like. I don't really. Watch much on HBO. I've kind of avoided a lot of that stuff for a while and so i'm gonna have to get it for this stuff but it's not a place where i go to watch very much of my uh content so i'm

Chris: I'll be curious to see how they do it from that studio and the way that, you know, their stuff is, can be very serious. It can be very, you know, it can be good, but I'm curious how long they'll.

Chris: be able to keep this going with all the politics around HBO as well and how it keeps rebranding itself and all that.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.

Chris: That's one of my big fears with this show is that we're going to get. two or three movies in and their shows in and then They're just going to. ended because HBO got sold and the new owners don't care for it.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: i truly don't believe they would end it the money is there

Jordyn: I think Harry Potter. I think Harry Potter is big enough that if anything is going to be immune to some sort of like corporate takeover, changing of the hands, it's going to be Harry Potter.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Merger. mm -hmm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Exactly.

Jordyn: Like...

Chris: depending on how it's

Jordyn: game of thrones could change you know but Harry Potter, like I said, Harry Potter is him.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And the tone, I mean.

Jordyn: He's...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: The tone of the show might change if... You know how, I don't know how. far the merger is going to like change down the line you know what i mean like our team's going to be replaced or not

Sarah-Daye McDougall: but i don't think they would recast you know i don't think they would change the sets and stuff i think like no matter What? company owns this story like they're going to continue it and I don't think they would start over like I think they would continue it like Jordan said Harry Potter is too big of a name we've already talked about how much money it's making no company is going to leave that money on the table by canceling the show

Jordyn: unless the show ends up.

Chris: We've seen weirder things happen.

Jordyn: Well, unless the show ends up being that. Like. bad in the sense of unfaithful well in the sense of unfaithful because I think like again we as fans, I think we can be forgiving of a lot of.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Maddie.

Jordyn: things regarding quality of the show and you know, acting, whatever, whatever. But if it's faithful, then that's what we've been begging for since day one.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: me.

Jordyn: So if it's faithful, we can move past all of that. If it's not faithful, I think that's going to be the thing that gets. most people to stop watching and lose. out on the money which you know could in turn result in that but

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: Again, I'd like to think that the people involved are smart enough to know that and to not be willing to risk it, but we'll see.

Chris: Yep.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And again, if you watch that documentary, you can see how like the teams behind each department. are real harry potter fans and they like us want to see a faithful adaptation.

Chris: So the movie and the book. that we're here to talk about

Sarah-Daye McDougall: so the cast

Chris: After ranting about the show for the last... Half hour.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Harry Potter is played by Daniel Radcliffe. Ron is played by Rupert Grant. Hermione is played by Emma Watson. Dumbledore is played by Richard Harris for this movie and the next movie.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: McGonagall is played by Maggie Smith. Hagrid is played by Robbie Coltrane. Snape is played by Aled Rickman. Quirrell is played by Ian Hart. The Dursleys are played by Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw, and Harry Melling.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And Ollivander is played by John Hurt. The Weasleys, we have Mrs. Weasley played by Julie Waters. Bonnie Wright is Ginny. Chris Franken as Percy, and then James and Oliver Phelps as the twins.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Neville Longbottom is played by Matthew Lewis. Draco is played by Tom Felton. And that's kind of the main cast of the first book.

Jordyn: There are so many. actors on this list who have passed.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: It's like... makes me so sad because again like we grew up with these people and so like to you know, especially McGonagall and Snape like such iconic roles for those actors like especially as a little kid growing up with it like

Jordyn: This was the first time I saw Alan Rickman in a movie and Dame Maggie Smith in a movie was in Harry Potter. And so to have like that was like the one of the biggest things that made me hesitant about the show was like this cast is so ingrained that. that's just who that's just snape that's just you know mcgonigal and hagrid and you know the dursleys like to have to recast those people like obviously you have to you know age and death and all these things you know it's a fresh start What? Like.

Jordyn: They're such iconic. performances. that I was like, you can't ever replace Alan Rickman. And you can't, but like. You can't, and I don't think they're trying to.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: But. I'm... hopeful that everybody involved is like recognizes the weight of what they're doing. and we'll give it that.

Jordyn: you know. that effort, that love.

Chris: I mean Tom Felton...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And something to mention about Snape is that the movie Snape and Alan Rickman's portrayal of movie Snape is so different than book Snape. Now things like McGonagall or Hagrid, they did their characters justice, but...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Sing. a new character as snape i don't think is going or sorry a new actor as snape is not going to be

Sarah-Daye McDougall: a huge problem for me If. like we've said it's book accurate and he's really as horrible as he is in the books and says the horrible things especially to Hermione and Neville and Harry that he does in the books which we don't really see in the movies like he's not a good guy and he's mean but

Jordyn: Mm hmm. Mm hmm.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: The things that he says to them is awful in the books.

Jordyn: Well... all of the abuse is watered down in these movies.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: Harry was... you're talking about like the Dursleys are like not nice people like they're abusers they abuse that boy like they allow Dudley to physically assault him repeatedly his entire childhood they starved him they locked him in a cupboard under the stairs like these are abusive human beings these are evil human beings and so like they were watered down to just you know kind of silly haha like they're they're mean but they're not like that bad and Snape like you said I agree you know

Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm

Jordyn: He's not ever like. evil he's just kind of mean to harry you know And, but he's like, bro's racist. Like he was spoiler alert for a property, you know, for the books, 20 years old, he was a death eater.

Jordyn: Like he was a. pureblood supremacist with Voldemort.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: He... you know look down on people who are of not not pure blood so you know yeah hermione was you know completely abused and, you know,

Jordyn: belittled in front of her classmates regularly and neville he was so mean to neville like It's a joke in Prisoner of Azkaban that like his Boggart is Snape. But like if your greatest fear is one of your teachers that you have to see every day.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.

Jordyn: Hey! I'm calling CPS. What are we talking about right now?

Chris: And Neville was pureblood, so...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: Yes, and he was still mean to that boy. Yeah, so I... you know, It's hard because, you know, it's a property for kids and for like families to watch together. So like you have to, you don't want to.

Jordyn: portray the true... uh effects of the abuse and like you know make people squeamish but also like this was real stuff that happened to harry that you know real

Chris: Well, and you've got child actors you're dealing with, too, that you have to consider when they're filming these things and how they're going to handle it.

Jordyn: Right, like... Yeah.

Chris: So.

Jordyn: Yeah. But I mean, even just from the trailer, like the speech that Petunia is making, like the rant that she's giving at Harry, that is more telling of the abuse that he experienced than anything we ever got in the movies from the Dursleys.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep.

Jordyn: So, you know, even if it's just ver - just even if it's verbal only and not the starvation and the physical abuse that is still like something I guess to

Chris: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: to the point of accuracy for what he went through.

Chris: Give you more implications, at least, of what might be happening behind closed doors.

Jordyn: Right. Right.

Chris: I know Tom Felton's been... very much back in this world doing a lot more stuff lately and so that's uh i wasn't sure about his character at first when i started watching the movies But he did pull off that.

Chris: That child that, uh... you know felt like he had the right to everything and was getting shown up by this you know nobody that showed up as the chosen one and so and as the show progressed i actually really liked the older or the movies progressed i really liked the older Tom Felton playing that role, and I think he accomplished that well.

Chris: Hermione's always been my favorite, so seeing the way she... brings everybody together so well and has her you know her little emotional problems but also is just always the brain of the operation i loved the way emma watson played her and yeah And Rupert's great, too.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I think there's something to say there too, because a lot of the fandom.

Chris: He's a good guy.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Thanks. the movies gave a lot of Ron's characteristics to Hermione in the movie. And so like they just butchered Ron's character in the movies. and he's just comedic relief.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And we see a lot of that. We see a lot of that in this one, but also in the next one with the whole spiders and like how. he's Rupert Grint is just a really good. like character actor you know what i mean he's he's a very good comedic actor So going back to the show, it'll be nice to see.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: They're true.

Chris: How they handle those characters, yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: characters and character arcs, exactly.

Jordyn: Yeah. Well, I think. most of that can go back to so much of the plot of the books be having to be cut out for time and so you don't have those quiet moments of harry and ron you know spending

Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm

Jordyn: time together you know the closest we get in this movie is like the christmas scene Which I really hope that if they do any scene line for line, I hope it's that scene. Because I want to see Harry really opening the gifts from Mrs. Weasley and having that emotional reaction that he's getting Christmas presents for the first time at age 11 from a woman that he met for two seconds on the train platform. Ugh!

Jordyn: i hate i cry every time i watch that scene i can't not cry because like he's just a baby and they're all so cute and tiny in this movie i think and and the new cast looks so cute and tiny too so i think like

Chris: Yeah.

Chris: Have we seen Miss Weasley? I don't remember. I haven't watched the trailer much, so I need to go back and do that.

Jordyn: Yes.

Chris: But we've seen the new one. How do we feel about her?

Jordyn: I think so yes.

Chris: She's one of my other favorites. performance from Miss Weasley.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think she's gonna do well

Chris: Awesome.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: yeah i'm excited i i really don't have a problem with any of the new cast i think especially like you just said they're all so tiny like neville and seamus are so tiny and i cannot wait

Jordyn: So tiny.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: because You know, we're gonna be watching this for the first time as adults now So we're going to have a completely. Different reaction to seeing.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Especially the abuse. from the Dursleys and Snape to these tiny little babies now that we're adults. And we're going to be like, this is not right. Like, this is not just a mean teacher.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like this is abuse. Like we know these words.

Jordyn: I'm calling magical CPS.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, so. Yeah, and going back to the Dursleys again, too. I just want to reiterate how. They those I don't.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think the movies were good for what they were. The cast was good for what the movies were trying to do. And like you said, so much is cut. It is. They are. also comedic relief like they really lighten these movies up a lot so

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Chris: He's an adventure writer. He writes these, directs these. fun adventure stories the goonies and uh you know he he likes to have his kids be you know have fun throughout their experience even if it's a scary weird experience

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But it is going to be interesting to see how HBO can really mature this up and darken it a lot.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: With keeping that.

Jordyn: Yeah, I think

Sarah-Daye McDougall: whimsical

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Wizarding World feel.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: It'll be an interesting balance for sure.

Jordyn: What?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: Yeah, this is not a casting thing, but, like, John Williams was really in his bag when he did the music for Harry Potter. Like, just... you can play me like three seconds of any song and i can tell you exactly where in the movie it's happening and i can start crying about it because i can think of that scene like It...

Jordyn: The music tells a story and it... just feels. magical like that music is magical and so we've talked about this before in one of our adaptation reports when they announced that hon zimmer is going to be the composer for the show thank goodness because like we talked about it already but like

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: when you're watching a movie, like what really gets you is the music with the scene and that's what really drives the emotion.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep. Mm hmm.

Jordyn: So I'm really excited to see. you know these new tiny baby faced actors and these really emotional scenes, these hard scenes and these beautiful scenes with new music. The whole experience of rewatching this movie is just like.

Jordyn: what a time to be alive and like be, have this be your golden trio and this music and the coloring of the film. Like we can go on and on about how, you know.

Jordyn: gray and dull movies and shows look these days and this movie is so colorful and so bright and full of life and so

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: I hope that the show like. there are good things to be taken from this movie like I know they're going to change it you know for the show and readapt it and all that but there are good things that the movies did that I hope they take away too.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: To follow up on that. the opening of the HBO show is going to be really important because oftentimes they're so iconic like you think of like Carrie Bradshaw in Her 2 -2 and the Game of Thrones.

Jordyn: Mhm.

Jordyn: mm -hmm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: that's going to be our first look. Like we might get. a quick opening like maybe it's dropping harry off at the doorstep and then we get our intro and then we get the show. But that opening is going to. give us a real look into what we can expect for the rest of the season and series.

Chris: So, for the series, they're doing it one... movie per. or one book per season. Is that right? And do we know how long these are going to be?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's ten years, but it's eight seasons.

Chris: No, I mean, like, have they... Do we know how many episodes are in those yet?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think it's eight

Jordyn: I think.

Jordyn: thing i think this season might be eight which feels fine for the book being you know however you know two three hundred pages it's very small book comparatively but like I hope they make more episodes.

Jordyn: as needed as the books get longer because like Goblet of Fire is a She's a big girl.

Chris: That's what I was curious about.

Jordyn: And if you try to cut that book down into eight. episodes. stuff's gonna get left out and then we're gonna be upset so like i If we start with eight for this. this movie or this book.

Jordyn: That's fine. That feels healthy to me to get eight hours of content out of this book. but we better be prepared to extend that. as the books get bigger

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think it's possible. to do it in eight. But I would prefer... 10. in the later seasons

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But if they come if they came out tomorrow and told us every season was going to be eight episodes. I wouldn't be too too scared. Yet. especially because it does look like they're because they're adding stuff to season one like we're getting more content

Chris: So for this one.

Jordyn: mm -hmm mm -hmm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: To fill eight episodes. Like I. I wouldn't. be too concerned yet so but we'll see i mean again i would not argue if it's 10 episodes i will watch all 10.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: So he's got to be introduced who he is.

Jordyn: What?

Chris: Probably a little bit of that whole backstory of how he ended up at the Dursleys. We... Got to get to Hogwarts and through Diagon Alley. You can grant a wall.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't even know if we'll see Hogwarts in episode one. I bet it would just be yeah

Chris: No, I don't think so

Jordyn: which If we do that, I'm going to be like, this is where it's already over because it's too rushed.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Chris: You probably end the first episode with you're a wizard, Harry, and then move into, you know, the next season.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: Yes.

Chris: Next episode would be going to Diagon Alley and the vault. And then by episode three or maybe the end of episode two, you end up at the school.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Chris: on the train, maybe.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I could see episode two being the sorting, like up until the sorting and he gets sorted.

Chris: the train Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Chris: On the train to the sorting would be episode three.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, yeah.

Chris: And then what's after the.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, let's go, let's talk about, let's talk about the plot of book one, because that's technically supposed to be part two.

Chris: That's kind of what I was going through a little bit.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, of our, yeah, so.

Chris: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay, so like you said, Dursley's mistreatment. Hagrid comes. Oh, all the letters. Hagrid comes at the rock. In the middle of the ocean.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Your Wizard, Diagon Alley.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Now in the books, he goes back to... the Dursleys for a week or two. And he has to ask them to take him to. Kings Cross Station.

Chris: The train station. Yeah.

Jordyn: It's like a month because his birthday is July 31st and school is September 1st.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes. Good call.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Good call.

Jordyn: I think he has a day, maybe two days with Hagrid going through Diagon Alley and stuff, but he has to spend the entirety of August. Back with the Dursleys. Poor kid.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know.

Chris: But. But at least knowing he's a wizard, so that's a whole different experience.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: Yes. There's some light at the end of the tunnel.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But I don't think he gets his room yet. He doesn't get his bedroom until the second book, right?

Jordyn: Yes he does. No, he... In the movies, that's correct. In the book, which I was like, oh, shoot, I totally forgot that.

Chris: They gave him Dudley's second bedroom.

Jordyn: In the book, the first letter that they get. It is addressed to Harry Potter cupboard under the stairs, whatever, whatever the jerseys are like, Oh my God, they're watching us. There are abuses being known by other people.

Jordyn: So that's that they move him to the second bedroom.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay.

Jordyn: in this book. and then i'll do it

Chris: Just the fact that Dudley had two bedrooms.

Jordyn: Letters are addressed to. Harry Potter's smallest bedroom.

Chris: And they still put them there.

Jordyn: Right.

Chris: was is what shows you more of the abuse is like you know we had two bedrooms but we still put you in a cupboard

Jordyn: Abuse! It's abuse.

Jordyn: Right. abuse. So yeah, so he gets to spend the end when he comes back from Diagon Alley with Haggard, he gets to have the bedroom for the rest of August.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay.

Jordyn: But yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: and then He has to ask them if they will take him to King's Cross Station. That's when they mention that they're going to London anyway, because they have to remove Dudley's tail that Hagrid gave him.

Jordyn: Yes. Yes.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: and then

Jordyn: And then they drop him off at the train station and leave him. with no intention of coming back.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: which is... Say it with me, class. Abuse.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: and that's that's how he finds the weasleys because he's like where do i go and then he he overhears her saying packed with muggles he meets ron and Ginny and the rest of the Weasleys, and then they go on the train. And then that's when we meet.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh, wait. Let's go back a little bit to... Diagon Alley because he meets Draco. in Diagon Alley.

Jordyn: He doesn't know that it's Draco. They don't exchange names or anything, but he meets this kid who's a total

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And he realizes how, like, stuck up this guy is.

Jordyn: butt face.

Jordyn: yeah and he's like i don't like this guy whatever and then when he meets him later at hogwarts and like the sorting and stuff he's like oh I don't like you

Chris: Draco thought they could be good friends. He thought, hey, this is a pureblood... Wizard, they could be my friend.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So then fast forwarding again, back to the train, we meet Neville, we meet Hermione.

Chris: And he's famous and all that.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Do we see Draco on the...

Jordyn: We meet Ron.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Train again. Or is that...

Jordyn: Not this year.

Chris: Yeah, because he comes in. messes with uh he tries to be as you know come sit with us harry uh and he says i think i'm good

Jordyn: Oh yes. That whole thing happens on the train and not. And. while they're waiting for the sorting ceremony. You're right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. which is in the movie it happens on the staircase and that's our first introduction to him at all

Jordyn: Yes. Yes.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And then crab. crab and boil and then okay so we're on the train we arrive at hogwarts we have the boats First years go on the boats with Hagrid. McGonagall gets them. We have interactions with the house ghosts. And then we do the sorting ceremony.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And then he's, of course. sorted into Gryffindor after saying he just wanted to be in Slytherin. We have the feast and then classes begin. This is when we learn more about Hermione and her personality and how she's a know -it -all. We learn more about Snape.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: You mentioned Christmas time. This is when he finds the mirror and. brings ron back to the mirror and then just Dumbledore

Jordyn: He's given the invisibility cloak.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: yes yes yes that's how he gets to the mirror

Jordyn: mm -hmm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh, and they're trying to figure out, they're trying to find out more about Nicholas Flamel because they know something is at stake.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know there's there was a break in at

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Gringotts.

Jordyn: Yes.

Jordyn: Harry puts it together that him and Hagrid went to Green God's, picked something up. Hagrid just keeps... blabbing throughout the whole story i shouldn't have said that i should not have said that He says, like, you know, I'm picking something up for Dumbledore.

Chris: Probably shouldn't have said that.

Jordyn: There's no place safer than Green Gods except perhaps Hogwarts.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mhm.

Jordyn: So Harry kind of puts two and two together that whatever they got from Green Gods is now at Hogwarts. And then before Christmas time, there's Halloween time where there's a troll in the dungeon.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. And before

Jordyn: And...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: When does the... Okay. The. dragon norbert and they forget the cloak it's Ron has gotten bitten by the dragon.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So Hermione and Harry take the dragon to the tower so that Ron's brother

Jordyn: Mm hmm.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I can't remember if it's Charlie or...

Jordyn: Charlie.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: It is Charlie. Okay. comes to get the dragon or he sends his friends to get the dragon they forget the cloak and then they get in trouble and they have

Jordyn: Yes.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: detention.

Jordyn: Detention.

Jordyn: with Hagrid and the Forbidden Forest tracking down a unicorn that has been attacked by something that they don't know what it is.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: But is it?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: but

Jordyn: bad enough to attack a unicorn.

Chris: Awful thing.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Neville and Draco also have. detention.

Chris: Because they were also out.

Jordyn: uh, There.

Chris: Neville was trying to find them, to warn them.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: i'm out right but when does the midnight duel come in because they because draco was like we're gonna duel

Chris: And, uh...

Jordyn: That's beforehand. That's when they discover fluffy. is because... Neville had got locked out because he forgot the password. So Harry and Ron are going to battle Draco.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay.

Jordyn: Hermione follows them out.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right, right, right.

Jordyn: The fat lady is gone.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay.

Jordyn: So all four of them now go to duel.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep.

Jordyn: Draco has set up a trap for them. They run, they hide, they discover Fluffy. And then... like separately later is when the dragon stuff happens and they get Harry and Hermione get caught

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, yes.

Jordyn: And Draco gets caught because he's.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Freiko overhears the dragon thing. and is going to try to get them in trouble and then neville yes okay

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: we're all set so that's the detention so it's hermione harry Neville and Draco go to detention and that they separate into different groups with the dog and Hagrid. And then that's when Harry sees Voldemort for the first time drinking the unicorn blood.

Jordyn: As we're going through this, I'm realizing. how much I took for granted that the movie plot was the book plot.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm

Jordyn: because i'm like yeah this happens like this because that's what how it goes in the movie but like that's not 100 % how it goes in the book so I'm trying to like oh my gosh yeah and I used to read I used to reread these books every summer because like we had like readings we had to do for school.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Chris: I kind of want to.

Jordyn: And so then in the summer when it was my time and I could read whatever I wanted, I was just rereading Harry Potter every single year from like. As soon as they were all out, like up through high school, basically. But then I haven't reread them in a while. rereading it.

Jordyn: Now, and watching the movie like I've seen the movie more times than I've read the book so that's more ingrained as like the quote unquote true plot.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: And so I'm like, wait a minute, this is not right.

Chris: And that's going to be the hardest part of the show is that we're going to have a hard time separating that. I kind of want to take a copy of the book and watch the movie and highlight through it the things we've seen and then do it with the show and highlight what things they actually get to more so with that.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: It could be an interesting one.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, feel free to listen to Puse's Gap Fest, which is one of my original podcasts where we did basically just that. But I think we completed up to book three.

Chris: There you go.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: and then Schedules change.

Jordyn: We should pick that back up and just, we're the new hosts of Peeves Gab Fest.

Chris: I was going to say, are we doing a... Was that... Was that... Megan?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, Megan and James were my co -hosts for Peeves' Godfest.

Chris: With your hair. Yes.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Chris: It would be fun to at least revisit that, maybe have them come over and hang out with us and do a little bit of conversation about it.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I did. mean to ask you guys if we can invite them and then it just time flew.

Chris: Once or twice.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But yes, if we want to invite them to do either like the season premiere finale. I think that would be fun.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: That would be a lot of fun. Always, always welcome. Always happy to have our friends on.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes. So. anything else before we get to kind of like those trials the end.

Jordyn: I'm... Excited. that the show will have more time and we can actually see them like in class more and like just doing like

Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm

Jordyn: average magical things because like the again for time the movie is very like boom boom boom boom like all these different events are happening but there's not actually if you like pay attention there's not actually a lot of magic being done

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: in especially in this movie so

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, it's a whole year also. So like a whole year in two hours is just.

Jordyn: Yeah. Right. Yes. is a lot.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: is a lot so

Sarah-Daye McDougall: quidditch like we're gonna get a lot more quidditch

Jordyn: Which I'm pumped about. Yeah, so I hope that they get more, like... class time, even if it's like a montage of them in their different classes and doing stuff, like I would like to see some more insight into.

Jordyn: the classic because we get the scene of Seamus blowing up his feather in charms class. And then McGonagall, you know, teasing them that they were late. And when she does her animagus transformation, that was bloody brilliant. And that's pretty much...

Jordyn: it like we don't see them in class very much after that so i'd like to see some just like hey we're just going to class and then hey we're going to Hagrid's on Friday after our last class is out and just Like, not a whole episode or anything.

Jordyn: Nothing crazy, but just, like... a little bit more of the mundane day -to -day life at Hogwarts type stuff.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Exactly. I believe we will. in the newest trailer you can see ron has a bloody nose at one of the quidditch matches so we can believe that.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: We're going to see the fight between him, Neville, and Draco at the Quidditch match. I think that we are going to get all those little details.

Jordyn: which I forgot about. So pumped.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like it's. And again, that's because we have eight hours worth of time to fill.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Ish.

Jordyn: yeah. Even just within this. I'm flip -flopping. I'm like, oh, I'm kind of nervous, like, you know, recasting and all that.

Jordyn: And now I'm like, oh my gosh, we get to see Ron. you know punch draco malfoy in the face which is Not the only time that Draco Malfoy gets punched in the face by one of our crew.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm

Jordyn: He deserves it every single time. Mind you, you know, like.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh yeah. He deserves to be touched more.

Jordyn: this

Chris: Jordan's over here. We shouldn't let abusive children abuse the children, but it's okay if they're doing it to each other.

Jordyn: Yes, there's a big difference between an adult abusing a child and kids getting in a fistfight because he's being racist.

Chris: You're okay with kid violence, though.

Jordyn: He's being racist and classist and bullying people. So yeah, somebody should put him in his place. That's not the same as an adult abusing their position of power over children.

Chris: affair. But still. It's still violence that, you know.

Jordyn: Listen.

Chris: Probably shouldn't be encouraged.

Jordyn: I'm not encouraging kids to be violent just saying it's already happened in this fictional story and so like yeah we shouldn't I want accuracy, Chris. I want accuracy.

Chris: Punch Nazis. That's what Captain America taught us, so it works.

Jordyn: Right. Exactly.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So then the trials leading into getting the Philosopher's Stone, we have Fluffy, which... They've already met previously. He's already put to sleep.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Uh, cause... They think it's neat. Zach's fake world. Guys. put the dog to sleep and then we get devil's snare And the scene in the movie is a little different because...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: hermione freaks out and i think it's ron is like are you a witch or not and then In the... movie she's the first to like calm down and fall through And again, Ron, comedic.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: relief is freaking out flailing

Jordyn: Yeah. Great, now I can relax.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And then is the winged keys next?

Jordyn: Yes, the movie omits the potions.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right?

Jordyn: the potion bottles that like riddle thing but yeah it's winged keys

Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's after even the chess. That's like the last one before he goes to the mirror.

Jordyn: Yes. Yes. It's winged keys, chess.

Jordyn: Ron gets knocked out in chess.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: Harry and Hermione have the potions to figure out. Harry sends Hermione back to take care of Ron and call Dumbledore. He goes on to battle. Snape.

Jordyn: who is actually Quirrell, who is actually... Baltimore.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Lamar.

Jordyn: Boom.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: In the movie, because they emit the... potions hermione takes Ron after the chess game immediately.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And there's that whole.

Jordyn: which is one of

Sarah-Daye McDougall: bravery conversation.

Jordyn: Yeah. Which is fascinating that it's become such a memed scene.

Jordyn: Like, it's like... it it has like there's so many people who like reenact that scene and and like have memefied it

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep. It's the, like the initials.

Jordyn: Not me. Not Hermione. yeah like that whole it's such a it's like a joke now but it's like

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: These are 11 year olds, you guys. And they like this is very, very, really big stakes and dangerous.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: And like. there's a lot happening here and these are they're 11 years old i was in fifth grade when i was 11 years old a wee little itty bitty baby these are little tiny children like You know. So.

Jordyn: And it's funny now, but like I hope that like the seriousness of like 11 year olds being in these life or death situations is like more feels a little bit more serious and.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.

Jordyn: you know people memes are gonna meme and people are gonna make jokes but like

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm?

Jordyn: i'd like the tone to be like no this is real life

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think HBO has a history of... doing that well.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So he moves on to the final. challenge, which is corals. Or no, Quirrell, I think, was else. Anyway, moves to the mirror. and we discover that It's on the back of his head.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: and He gets the stone in his pocket and then there's a little battle and he passes out and then he wakes up with Dumbledore in the. hospital bed.

Jordyn: And Harry has a lot of questions and Dumbledore's like, ooh, can't tell you that. it's like

Jordyn: I got a lot of issues with.

Chris: You can't do an 11 -year -old that.

Jordyn: I got a lot of issues with Dumbledore. I am a Dumbledore hater. uh

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.

Jordyn: There's no reason to leave a child with an abusive family. there's just not there's no like i understand like the magic and petunia's blood Grrrr! Keep him at Hogwarts then.

Jordyn: Like, you could have figured something else out other than leaving him with abusive people. and then like yes i know he's 11 but like he just survived all this stuff and you can't tell him like his whole like his own life story like I don't know

Sarah-Daye McDougall: He admits though that he fucked up.

Chris: Later, yeah, he realizes he should have done that

Jordyn: Yeah! That doesn't fix 11.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: Plus years of abuse, though.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: You're right.

Jordyn: What?

Jordyn: Anyways, this is not the Dumbledore heating. This is the Sorcerer's Stone episode.

Chris: Tune in later for that one.

Jordyn: I...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: Huh?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Tune in later, he said.

Chris: Tune in next time for that one.

Jordyn: I think it's mostly going to come out.

Chris: No. Jordan's rant coming out on our sub stack against Dumbledore.

Jordyn: No. I could. I think most of my.

Chris: Yeah.

Jordyn: like vitriol for dumbledore is going to come out like with deadly hollows and stuff like once like more of like what he knew and when he knew it like is revealed like to harry that's where i'm going to start like

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. well and we learned in the pensive like snape literally said you've raised him as a pig for slaughter

Jordyn: having issues.

Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah, he sure did.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. And there's... you know

Sarah-Daye McDougall: That goes into the whole ethics. philosophy of like one life for the many.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Chris: And, I mean... He was. The reason that way because he knew he was the only one who could actually defeat uh voldemort but it's still yeah it has some it's problems for sure that he should have known more of what he was getting into he should have been able to

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.

Chris: make a choice and really he had no choice throughout this whole story he had to be here he had to be the one so

Jordyn: Right.

Jordyn: My biggest thing is...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.

Jordyn: Dumbledore choosing to leave him with abusive people. Like that's like the other stuff I can like, okay, it's a story. You need plot. You need him to like unravel this mystery as he gets older. Like you, like you said, you know. one one life sacrifice to save all of wizard kind like you know.

Jordyn: I can get. I can understand and like rationalize all that stuff. I cannot rationalize. Knowing that. this child because like if you know that he lives in the cupboard under the stairs that alone You should be taking him out of there and getting him somewhere safer where they're going to actually feed him and take care of him and like, you know, treat him like a human being.

Jordyn: And so that's like, ultimately, I can't forgive Dumbledore for that one thing, which makes everything else that he does, even if it was understandable, look that much worse to me.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But if he didn't have the protection...

Chris: Because when Voldemort was gone... yeah but when he was gone who would be coming after him at that point are the

Jordyn: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: No, no, no, no, no, no.

Chris: Is there actually a threat that whole time?

Jordyn: Right.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's what I was just about to say. There was definitely still Death Eaters. Like, look at all this stuff we find out in. the fifth book about all the stuff that happened after the fall Voldemort.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like Lucius is still out there. Snape is still out there. Dumbledore trusts him, but there's still Death Eaters. When they go in book four, there's still a group of people that are loyal to Voldemort that if they could.

Jordyn: Yeah.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: would have gone and killed Harry.

Chris: Sure.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: So if he didn't have that spell...

Chris: But if he had been...

Jordyn: But he was leaving the house regularly.

Jordyn: that part

Chris: have uh you know these wizards that were like as far as we understand it molly was a powerful

Jordyn: He could have lived with Hagrid.

Chris: Yeah, Hagrid probably would have been okay to take care of him, too, on the grounds.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But he does make the point.

Chris: He probably could have.

Jordyn: As a backup, but like...

Chris: Thank you.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: He does make the point though that living in the wizarding world as a famous

Jordyn: You know

Sarah-Daye McDougall: person would fundamentally change who he is as a person. Like he would not be the same Harry that we have in the series.

Chris: Maybe.

Jordyn: If he had grown up famous, he would be more entitled, more likely to be friends with Malfoy, somebody of that nature, right? So yes, I agree. He shouldn't be. like fully in the wizarding world where he can be worshipped from birth from you know his that one -year -old time frame to for the rest of his life. Okay, fine.

Jordyn: He also doesn't need to be. abused for 11 years straight like there I feel like there's somewhere in the middle that we could have found if we had

Chris: He also...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think it's just unfortunate that the Dursleys suck.

Jordyn: work even a little bit harder.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: I mean. The protection spell is in place. And like, he has to be under that protection spell because. there are Death Eaters that will still try to harm him.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: It just sucks that the Dursleys suck.

Chris: I mean, there's also... I started to say. I lost it. I'll get there again.

Chris: Oh yeah, if he had been raised by his parents, he would have been just... I mean, we wouldn't have had the fame of the boy who lived, but he would have probably had more of that... You know. that uppity wizard feel to him as well because he would have been a purebred wizard raised in Hogsmeade or whatever the place.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But if he was raised by his parents, we wouldn't have a story.

Chris: was they ended up

Jordyn: Godric's Hollow.

Chris: Magic Hall, that's right. I don't know. There was still Voldemort around at the time. I mean, yes, this moved the story in a certain direction, but you would have had a war still that would have had to have been resolved at some point.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: But if his parents were alive, like...

Chris: Would he have had the same friend? That's what he had the...

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, the whole, I mean.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: The question isn't how he would be.

Chris: Sounds like an interesting story.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: if his parents were alive. Because... If they were alive, Voldemort wouldn't have won. Because...

Chris: or would have.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: the prophecy was about these people Killing him? So he had to kill those people.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Anyway, any final thoughts on...

Chris: But what if he'd gone to Neville instead?

Sarah-Daye McDougall: the sorcerer's stone. Adaptation. And anything that you're, you know. excited about to see in the show or

Jordyn: Nothing that we haven't already said like I think we all just really hope that it's as accurate to

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: the book as humanly possible. as magically possible.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: As they claim it to be.

Jordyn: as they claim it to be, yeah, because again, at the risk of... well knowing that i'm going to repeat myself like i can forgive a lot of things.

Jordyn: if the cgi is bad which i hope they use mostly practical effects like the movies did it just feels better and more natural to me like i don't want a ton of cgi if it can be avoided

Chris: All AI.

Jordyn: but Like I can forgive that if. we get an accurate. you know beat by beat story so i really really hope

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.

Jordyn: that that's how it works out and that's what we get.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: Same.

Chris: Agreed.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: All right. Well, listeners. This is just the one episode we're doing on Sorcerer's Stone until the TV show comes out in December. And we will... try to cover that weekly.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: each episode we'll have We will cover each episode of the show so we're looking forward to that. We're also going to be doing Percy Jackson weekly so look forward to that as well. Until next time. Keep watching.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And reading.
