Sarah-Daye McDougall: Welcome back to BookWatch's Adaptation Report, our monthly news episodes. where we bring you the latest news from the world of books making their way to the big and small screens. I'm Sarah Day.
Chris: And I'm Chris.
Jordyn: And
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And this month, we are talking about some major literary adaptations hitting theaters and streaming, including Verity, Sense and Sensibility, Clara and the Sun, and Whale Hole.
Chris: We've also got some big casting and production updates, including the latest on heated rivalry, Netflix's icebreaker and the bell jar. Starring Billie Eilish.
Jordyn: Plus, we've got new adaptation announcements, renewals, and some familiar literary worlds getting another chance at the screen, including the Kane Chronicles, John Sanford's Prey series, and the Love Hypothesis sequel.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We'll get into all of that after these messages.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Before we get into adaptation news, let's check in with our book watch bookshelf. I've been watching kind of three shows recently, which is Slow Horses on Apple TV. We'll talk about in a little bit.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Ted Lasso also on Apple TV. And also Lanterns, which is on HBO, which I think is the first. Of the new DC stuff.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That I've really enjoyed. I've watched. Superman and Supergirl. Is that all that's been in the DC so far?
Jordyn: Yeah, I think
Chris: They had the... creature commandos animated show and the peacemaker season two which also fell under that
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I do love Peacemaker. I forgot about that. And I think I watched Creature Commandos. All of it's been fine, but nothing's really blown me away like Lanterns has. So if you haven't watched Lanterns yet and you're into like the Marvel stuff and you've been into DC stuff, I would give Lanterns a try 100%.
Chris: Okay.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And of course. Obviously. i love halloween if you are watching this on video i am wearing a witch hat So we've been rewatching a lot of the classic Halloween stuff.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And my girls have actually wanted to watch Coraline. We've watched it twice so far. And as of this recording, it's only October 4th. And I was never really into it. I think I watched it when it came out, but it was not really my cup of tea.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I'm really surprised because I would have thought it was. scary for a four and six year old, but they were really into it. Bye. I didn't realize this until I was looking on some Reddit. threads that it is actually based on a book.
Chris: Yep. my wife is permanently scarred by that movie so i've never been we've never watched it in this household because she watched as a child and can't stand it so
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I'm so surprised my kids are like, yeah, let's watch Coraline again. I'm like, this is freaking me out. Why do you guys want to watch this?
Chris: Yeah. I've. I've never seen it, and I'm okay with that at this point.
Jordyn: It can be very scary. Like it's definitely a kid's movie. It's a Laika production. So it's like that Nightmare Before Christmas, like stop motion, claymation type vibe.
Jordyn: But that ending definitely can get scary. And it's one of my sister's favorite movies. She loves like any Tim Burton type deal. that's her jam so we grew up watching it all the time but if i catch it on the wrong time of night or the wrong if i'm in a an already anxious head space like it will freak me out even still as an adult so Good for your girls.
Jordyn: I would have thought they would have been scared too, but.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Okay, troopers.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But, I mean... This is coming from the girls that... watched Agatha all along as it came out and that they were probably like two and four or three and five at that point. And they love like they were not scared by the like the seven. Witches that are after Agatha, they weren't scared of.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know, the death character at all. They definitely don't have the fear that I have. I think they're going to be horror movie girls.
Chris: There you go.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Not like me.
Chris: but the book is uh neil gaiman so that's the same person as sandman a lot of the That sort of stuff.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh. Okay.
Chris: So that's who wrote that one. So it yeah I could be interested in reading the book at some point, possibly.
Jordyn: apparently the book is much much scarier than the movie they like took it way way down
Chris: But I don't know if I...
Chris: Yeah, that's interesting
Jordyn: to make it more kid Kid friendly.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: To be a kid's film.
Jordyn: Yeah. it. kid -friendly.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I don't know about that, you guys.
Jordyn: for the movie.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I can barely handle the movie. I don't know if I can handle the book. then.
Jordyn: We can use Chris as a guinea pig since he's never experienced either one before.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Chris: Yeah, there we go.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: You can do a solo cast on that one.
Chris: I think I'm good. But hey, if you guys want that audience, let us know if you want me to, you know, scare myself watching a kid's movie.
Chris: Jordan, what are you watching and reading?
Jordyn: Also Ted Lasso. We love Ted Lasso in this house. and We don't really watch a lot of TV like when we were very into binging but just because that's like our personalities. So like we binge finished.
Jordyn: uh season one of the pit recently and then we're we've binge finished Ted Lasso to get ready for season four.
Jordyn: And that's really the only thing that we watch week by week. Reading wise, I have officially completed my entire Sarah J Maas reread for the ACOTAR release this month.
Jordyn: I'm so excited.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: mm -hmm
Chris: Me too. I finished my reread as well.
Jordyn: Yay. And then. Just trying to keep up with whatever my book club has been reading. We did the assistant to the villain series. So there's four of those now.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Did you like it?
Jordyn: Yes, there's very cute. And I think we've covered it on a previous adaptation report, but they are making a show for it. They said it's The Office Meets Princess Bride, which is exactly how the book is. And so I'm very excited for that whenever it comes out.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's really interesting.
Jordyn: yeah and then this uh next round of book club we're gonna start the shepherd king duology which is uh one dark window and two twisted crowns by rachel gillig so very pumped for that And...
Jordyn: Yeah, it's... you guys breaking news it's texas and it is actually a hoa hoa hoa season we've got crazy rain in the last couple of days and it's going to continue for a few more days so getting to read and watch twilight while it's actually actively raining outside was actually kind of a dream come true so i'm really pumped about how life is going right now
Chris: Probably still 90 degrees, though.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's been pretty rainy here too. I actually was gonna send you guys a picture. this morning because i looked out at my backyard and it was like foggy and rainy and i'm like it's perfect because we're recording twilight today as well and so i wanted to send you like what a perfect day to record twilight
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: I... keep starting the One Dark Window book that I have not gotten past the first couple chapters. Not because I haven't enjoyed it, but I just haven't gotten fully invested yet.
Chris: So maybe when you start that with Book Club, I'll jump in there with you. get through that in those books.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I was thinking the exact same thing. I haven't gotten past the first few chapters again, not because I haven't liked it. I just, we, you know, we're reading so much for this podcast and we all have book clubs. So. Again, with you reading it for your book club, Jordan, I think that's a good motivation for Chris and I to join you.
Jordyn: Yeah, it will be a reread for me and it is very slow.
Chris: It's based on... No.
Jordyn: to get started i found that too when i was reading it on my own i would like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Uh huh.
Jordyn: And it was so great because I loved it. So I would like read. And I'd be like, oh, I don't really want to read this book. It's very slow. But then I would read it and I'm like, OK, I can't put it down. Like once you hit certain. like plot points so it's it's a very interesting paced book that way.
Chris: well the magic system kind of being based in kind of a tarot -y style thing i'm really interested in the concept so i really want to get through it so yeah i'm excited to start in on that maybe you know the day new year here whatever we winter easter to start that but
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Uh -huh.
Jordyn: Yeah. I'll send you guys our calendar.
Chris: There you go.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, please do. I also wanted to add, still working my way through the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, I think we're... I'm two hours left of book.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's the Feral Gods one. But still really, really enjoying that series. It's crazy. It's a crazy ride, but also very heartfelt at times.
Chris: It does a good job of skirting that line and being really, really fun and action -packed, but also a little bit endearing.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I'm very, very excited for the show to see how they... bring this to life and if they can keep the heart of the story.
Chris: Definitely. As far as my last month has gone, I... read so much sometimes i forget what things i'm in but i just finished reading the martian just because i had ran out of other stuff i was actively reading and it's been sitting in my audible for a while and i wanted to reread it So I just read that. I've got Reacher. I just finished up on Amazon Prime.
Chris: That was a really good season. I've heard they've already got it renewed for season five and six, I believe. So I'm going to keep watching that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: which I think we'll talk about in our news today.
Chris: Yeah. Spoiler alerts. That coming. So, and that's been really good. They also did the spinoff show with one of the other characters in it, Neely, one of his other army buddies that I started the first episode, but I haven't gotten deep into that one yet, but I'm trying to.
Chris: to find time to watch that as well because it looks really interesting to spin off of Reacher a little bit.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I'm glad that you mentioned that because I saw that in. on like the deadline. Instagram, but I didn't include it in our news because I wasn't sure if that was also a book or if the spinoff is purely from the show point of view.
Chris: I think it is just using the character as a... uh pushing off point for just using some of her references from the show i don't think it's its own book But it is.
Chris: from the reacher books i believe some of the at least the concept for the idea of it so
Chris: Yeah, I don't think it fully counts as an adaptation. And I don't know what else I... i've been reading a lot of stuff for book watch here i've been watching i tried to start supernatural but that freaked my wife out too so i gotta find time to watch that on my own now we've started a couple other October show.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Wow.
Chris: We were just thinking about starting. She wanted to check out, what was it? It's a 90s witch show The Three Sisters. Do you guys know which one that would be? The crafter.
Jordyn: Charmed?
Chris: That's it, yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh, charmed. Yes.
Jordyn: hey never seen it i was born after it came out
Chris: She wanted to share that, so we watched. Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh, it's so good. It's a classic.
Chris: Yep.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I'm very surprised I didn't. Think of it. I love Charmed.
Chris: We hadn't watched it before, so she wanted to start the first few episodes. I think we went through the first one and McHath the second one. looks like something we might follow keep up on and for our audience that's
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's definitely very 90s, but please let me know how she feels as you guys watch. I want updates.
Chris: Definitely, I will. talk. keep it updating on the on the news report here i'll add a note here for myself and we can keep up on that but yeah Let's get into the adaptation report.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay. so October is pretty packed with... book to screen adaptation. So bear with us listeners. We're going to run through what's coming out this month and then.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: My co -host and I are going to speak on anything that... jumps out at us that we want to talk about. So. We're going to start with a few that have already come out because as of this recording, it is October 4th.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: On the first, East of Eden came out on Netflix, which is based on John Steinbeck's novel. The sweeping family drama follows two generations of the Trask family.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: The Odyssey?
Jordyn: Yep.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I didn't realize that it was based on a book.
Chris: Keep trying to get me on my TikTok too.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's right. But it is. based on the novel by Josh. Mahler Man titled Incidents Around the House. It's a supernatural horror story that follows a young girl who encounters a terrifying entity.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That wants her to let it inside her home, you know almost kind of like we were just talking about coralline with like other mommies Also on top. October 9th is California Scheming, which comes to theaters. It's based on Gavin Bain's California Scheming, how two lads from Scotland conned the music industry.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And it tells the true story of two Scottish friends who attempt to break into the American music industry by pretending to be successful hip hop artists. Sarah-Daye McDougall: On. The flip side of horror, we've got some romance coming to theaters on October 16th with Sense and Sensibility. which is a Jane Austen classic. This story follows sisters Eleanor and Marianne Dashwood as they navigate love, heartbreak, and financial uncertainty.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Also on top. October 16th, we have Whale Fall Hidden Theaters, which is based on a novel of the same name by Daniel Krauss. The film follows a teenage diver searching for his father's remains, who is swallowed by a giant sperm whale. and must fight to survive inside its body.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Season two of Rainmaker premieres. on October 16th as well on the USA Network. This is based on John Grisham's The Rainmaker. The series follows a young lawyer, Rudy Baylor, as he takes on powerful opponents while fighting for clients who cannot afford to fight for themselves.

Sarah-Daye McDougall: And finally, on the 30th as well. A Couple of Lies premieres on Netflix. based on the book. by Stefan Anhem. This thriller explores deception and the increasingly dangerous secrets. hiding beneath seemingly ordinary lies.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know.
Chris: A full month.
Chris: And we have all that on top of Vision Quest coming out on the 14th.
Chris: Which you know isn't a direct adaptation, but I mean there's plenty of stories that in comics that that that plays off of so
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Chris: The Visions being the one I think is going to follow the most. the series where Vision makes his own family, basically.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.
Jordyn: We got to stick to novels, otherwise we'll never be able to breathe.
Chris: And there is Vision Quest, I guess.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know.
Chris: Yeah, it just felt like a lot there that, you know, it wasn't... back on that i'm like well there's we got we got to bring a little bit a little bit of our my favorite thing marvel into this for a sec But yeah, it's a full month of, of course, Halloween being, you know. Spooky month. There's definitely a lot of horror there.
Chris: I have. A few of them I had no idea were coming there. definitely have got me excited uh we will not be covering the other mommy guys i'm sorry i can't do it
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Nope, no thank you.
Chris: That's it.
Jordyn: No. Not for me.
Chris: Yeah. I'm impressed by the performance that I've seen in the trailer from Jessica Chastain.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Chris: She's playing two different versions of that character. I'm sure it's going to be an impressive performance, but I'm not going for it.
Jordyn: Not doing that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And just to clarify, I don't. think it's necessarily to like performances of one character like but she is playing two characters in
Chris: What?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: in the book.
Chris: She's playing the mother and then the other mommy is the entity and it's it's her playing that character.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: In the movie. And yeah.
Chris: Yeah, so it's acting Because at the beginning of that trailer, it would just be in both.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. Two different characters, yeah.
Chris: But yeah, two different characters playing. Yeah, but she's. performing them as herself yeah so as her Yeah, it's her performance bringing both of those to life. Could be really interesting.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm. Yeah, I mean... I think I said it before, but the Trailer is a great trailer. But I'm not going to go see it.
Chris: Yeah.
Jordyn: I think I'm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The whale. The whale thing. What's it called? Whale fall? Also a good trailer.
Jordyn: Mm -hmm.
Chris: Well, fall.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Have you guys seen that one? The trailer?
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: I have, yeah.
Jordyn: It came on before I saw Practical Magic 2.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: That one and Clara and the Sun. And I just. I continue to be shocked at how many movies are actually just. adaptations of books.
Jordyn: Because now I'm going to the movies more frequently than I used to for book watch stuff. And then I sit through the trailers and then it's like based on them.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: on this novel based on this best -selling book and I'm like
Chris: based on the hit.
Jordyn: what do you mean what do you mean it's a book and so then yeah there's just so many things that Get adopted. and What a time to be alive.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know.
Jordyn: I don't even have any words.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: It's really cool that books are getting adapted.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: I don't know. I feel like I mean, do we need another Carrie adaptation? Like, what is this one going to do differently than any other ones? Do we need another Treasure Island adaptation? Especially like there's this one on MGM Plus. And then I think literally next year, there's another one with Hugh Jackman, right, that we've talked about before. So it's like, how many Treasure Island adaptations do we need? you guys we love church island we've already covered it
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's what I wanted to check because... I thought, I was like, wait, is this the one that we just talked about?
Jordyn: No, this one has like Hayley Atwell in it.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Or is it
Jordyn: I think I saw a trailer for it. I think it has like Hayley Atwell.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, you're right. It does.
Jordyn: Kit Harington, question mark.
Chris: Sold.
Jordyn: But. The other one has... Hugh Jackman. So they're two separate movies, like back to back.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay. Yeah. That is a lot.
Jordyn: And we talked during our...
Chris: You had me at Haley Atwell.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, and this is a series.
Chris: I'm in.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This isn't a movie, but yes.
Jordyn: I don't, but still like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know yeah.
Jordyn: I just.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But with the Carrie of it all, Carrie is going to be a show, right?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I love going to the movies. I love seeing a movie. But I do think most books need to be adapted into TV shows. get the most out of the book.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So, I mean, it could be fun to compare this Treasure Island TV show that's coming out this month on the Hugh Jackman movie coming out and seeing, like, what's a better adaptation when it's a show.
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris: Yep.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Because I don't know if a show has been done yet. for a treasure island.
Chris: It has.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think it's up.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah. It's been multiple times.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We have had a show.
Chris: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay.
Jordyn: What?
Chris: And also it's on MGM plus, so nobody's going to see it.
Jordyn: Just the fact.
Chris: So it's, you know.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: It'll be fun.
Jordyn: There's that. Just the fact that Haley Atwell, like such a big name, is starring in it.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: Like, this is not going to be faithful.
Jordyn: There's I mean, we talked about again, we've we've talked about it. Go check out our episodes on Treasure Island, Treasure Planet. But like the only female character in the story is Jim's mom. And so even if you have Haley Atwell as Jim's mom, like, first of all, waste of Haley Atwell.
Jordyn: a waste of that big of a name in that role for her to be there for 10 seconds and then the second she's not. jim's mom and she's somebody else immediately like the faithfulness score is lowered which like that doesn't mean it can't still be a great show and a great pirate show and tell you know a good treasure hunting story but it's inherently not going to be true to Treasure Island.
Chris: She is playing best, so I think that's his mom.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So it looks like. Yes, I'm reading the description right now. So yes, you're right. She plays the mother and it looks like she's going on the ship too. It says Jim Hawkins discovers a treasure map, but his mother Bess's actions put them both in danger.
Chris: No.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Abort the Hispaniola. They navigate threats from pirate John Silver and agent Aaron Graham as they... as alliances shift. And survival hangs in the balance.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So that will be an interesting one.
Jordyn: who the heck is agent graham okay now i'm intrigued now i need to know what this is
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't even think I've seen the trailer for this, but I knew Hayley Atwell was going to be in it because I've seen her. So I know I've seen something, but I don't think it's been an actual trailer.
Jordyn: I have seen the trailer on TikTok. It has come up as an ad. during my scrolling.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Chris: Yep, Haley Atwell being more involved as that character. I think I'm in. I'm good with it. I'll watch it. If I can ever figure out how to. log on to mgm plus i've never even tried yeah no thank you
Jordyn: I'm not paying for an MGM Plus.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: No, I don't think any of us want to.
Chris: You bet.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: What else is going on there?
Chris: It's a pirate movie.
Chris: Maybe I can figure something else out.
Jordyn: I think what I would probably do is wait until I accrue a list of things. That I want to see on MGM plus which I don't know how how long that would take and then do a 30 day trial and watch all of them.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: At once.
Chris: There you go.
Jordyn: And then. Never come back.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Let me scroll down here because I think one of our upcoming... things. Is on MGM. it's something called throttle. So we'll get to that later on in the episode, but there.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: MGM does seem to have some things coming up.
Jordyn: Fudge.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The other thing I want to speak on is the Wildwood adaptation.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I might be mistaken, but I think it took seven years to make this because it's truly claymation. And so just for that alone, I'm excited to see this before I even knew it was based on the book. So I want to get to the book and then obviously we won't be able to fit this in this month because we already have our schedule. But this is definitely something I would like to revisit again, maybe when it hits streaming.
Chris: it looks really good yeah it looks like they did a great job with uh the graphics the story seems to be interesting you know a little bit of labyrinth feel a little bit of like the fey other world you know the danger of the fey world style stuff so
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Chris: I think it'll be a lot of fun.
Jordyn: And it is a Leica production. So we were talking about Coraline earlier. So it's the same studio, the same animators. So. That means, you know. the quality is going to be fantastic and it'll feel familiar visually when you're watching it.
Chris: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: So, but yeah, I. I love. this type of like creation like made like literally made by human hands from start to finish is like especially in this age of AI where, you know, people take the fast and easy route of having somebody else or something else do it for you.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: I think this movie coming out now is really timely. And so I will be sure to support it financially.
Chris: Let's see. scroll through the list for a sec make sure i'm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Chris: See if I'm missing ones that I wanted to talk about.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I am excited for Sense and Sensibility. I've always loved the Jane Austen adaptations. no matter when they come out we've done Pride and Prejudice on the podcast.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I have not read the book, but I loved the original one with Alan Rickman. so i will i don't know that i'll see this one in theaters either but Definitely excited for it. And I think that's all I have to say. coming out this month.
Chris: The Rainmaker, I haven't watched yet the show, but... That's a... has been i think adapted before to like a movie and so i'm kind of interested in reading that and following up on what they're doing with that it seems interesting to me John Gresham. I haven't read a lot of his stuff, but.
Chris: I know people love it, so. Might be pretty good.
Jordyn: John Grisham is one of those authors like James Patterson that there was always just like And at least in my house, like with my mom, between my mom and my grandfather, there was always like a hundred books from both of those authors.
Jordyn: And so I just like. Always knew that he existed, but I never read anything that he ever... created.
Chris: Yeah, I gotta give it a shot.
Jordyn: But. I think if you're a fan of. specifically the courtroom scenes of Daredevil, you'll really enjoy John Grisham because that's all it is, is just lawyer stuff.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: Which can be an interesting perspective to come at things from, so I'm not opposed to it. I haven't watched any of the Tracker show yet, but the actor from that one is... Pretty good. So I. I'd like to watch a few episodes of that and see if it catches me.
Chris: Otherwise, yeah, that's a big.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Are we ready to move on to some updates?
Chris: Bless you, man.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It is a busy month.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Alright. So we'll start with, like casting news, production updates, things like that. heated rivalry.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Has added some major names to its season two cast with. Mila Jokovic, Kevin Zegers. and Paul Gross joining the HBO Max.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: crave. hockey romance. Jokovic will play Dr. Galena. Mochalina. Ilya is a psychologist. While Zegers is going to play Coach Wiebe or Weeb. And Gross will portray NHL Commissioner Roger. Crowell.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Season 2 is expected to premiere in the spring of 2027 and continues the adaptation of Rachel Reed's Game Changers book series.
Jordyn: I did not get on the heated rivalry. bandwagon and I don't think i will i i just i don't sports romances are not my thing
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: so I...
Chris: Lost me at sports.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, exactly. Same, same here.
Jordyn: I like sports. I grew up an athlete and I still am just like... i i get i've said it once i've said it a hundred times no magic no dragons no swords No, thank you.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It is wild that they've gotten such a big name of Jokovic here. And I'm not familiar with Kevin Zegers or Paul Gross, so I can't speak to their level of fame. but mila yukovic is really well known And. For such like a small budget show.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: it's interesting that she's gotten attached to it i mean it took over. you know, Instagram and TikTok and got a lot of attention when it came out. So again, I'm not so, so surprised that it's getting bigger name actors.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: but like you said I'm not too interested in those books I'm not interested in sports especially hockey So it's not something that I'm going to. spend time on when we've got so much other stuff.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The full cast of The Bell Jar has been confirmed as production wraps on Sarah Pauly's adaptation of Sylvia Path's classic novel. Billie Eilish will make her feature film acting debut as Esther Greenwood, joined by Carey Mulligan.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Danielle Deadweiler. Lily Taylor. Ella Beatty. Ike Barinholtz and Connor Story. Holly is directing and adapting the screenplay, and the film is being produced by Focus Features, Plan B, and Studio Canal. A release date has not yet been announced.
Jordyn: There's already been a lot of... chatter online about Billie Eilish. being cast in this film. To my knowledge, she doesn't have any prior acting experience. And so I'm not I also am not clear, though, on how big her role is, if she's the star of the film or if she's a supporting character. But I think like.
Jordyn: That's a really interesting. Like. concept to have a... Person who's known for their music coming in. I haven't read the bell jar, so I don't know if music is like a big thing, if she's needed to like be a.
Jordyn: actor singer like within the context of the story or if they just were like Yeah, you look the part or like, I don't know why she's here. so that'll be interesting but the bell jar is one of it's sylvia plath right so it's one of those ones that like you could have read in high school english class and i
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: I think I picked something else. But it's... very well known and so i think there's For fans of the bell jar, where it's significant to you. does mean a lot to have it be adapted.
Jordyn: So I hope they do a good job.
Chris: and it looks like she has done some at least one or two tv things before this will be her big screen debut but uh she was in swarm on uh prime video in 2023 and she's done like voice herself on The Simpsons, and... some other like background voice work for a few things.
Chris: So she has done a little bit of acting, not much.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: From what I remember, she is the main character. And there's no music. It's not like she's a musician, but I'm wondering if it does deal with mental health. So I'm wondering if...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: like the Joker 2 kind of did with the musical, like with Lady Gaga being Harley Quinn. having like the men like in those mental health breakdown scenes If that's musical numbers. I don't know much. I don't remember much about the bell jar and I don't know much more about what.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: our headline here said.
Chris: We'll keep looking and watching.
Jordyn: We'll see how it goes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Netflix has rounded out the cast for its upcoming series adaptation of Hannah Grace's Icebreaker following the recent announcement of leads Daisy Jelly as figure skater Anastasia Stassi Allen and Connor Simos as hockey player Nate Hawkins.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Lori. Cravalho, sorry, I can never pronounce her name, but that's Moana. Gabrielle Tierney, Peter Berry. Chaney Okular, Kevin, Devin Craig. and Aiden Shaw.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: have now joined the cast. with the series following Stassi and Nate as their competitive ambitions collide, and so does their attraction.
Jordyn: Another hockey romance that I'm not interested in.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And this one's ice figure skating.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: But, and hockey, there's a hockey player and yeah.
Jordyn: dating a hockey player.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Is he a, he's a plucky player? Okay.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: Yeah, that's what the note said there.
Chris: Yeah. uh so same thing just you know a different different breaker
Chris: Pretty good.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Prime Video has renewed Reacher for a sixth season just 12 days after season four finale. The Lee Child adaptation has become one of the streamer's biggest hits, with Season 4 reaching 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: While season five is already in production and will adapt child's make me.
Chris: So I've heard from like some of the. cast and uh the production team has talked about how season five is used going through one of the more intense like the Almost.
Chris: Uh... over the top uh cases that he's dealt that they deal with in the books like way difficult material so it should be a really interesting to see how they adapt that and that's probably why i mean obviously the show is wildly popular and uh
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.
Chris: People are really loving seeing. that actor. My...
Jordyn: Alan Richeson.
Chris: brains blank alan ridgerton that's him yeah skip my name for my brain for a sec there but uh uh seeing him in that role he just fits the character so well and so i'm i've been enjoying every second of it on screen so i'm excited they've already got a couple more seasons on the way
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The first Game of Thrones movie now has a release date. Game of Thrones Aegon's Conquest is set to hit theaters on June 1st, 2029. with A Night of the Seven Kingdoms director Owen Harris behind the camera and House of Cards creator Bo William.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Man. writing the screenplay. The film will tell the story of Aegon the Conqueror and his conquest of Westeros, which ultimately established the Targaryen dynasty.
Jordyn: This has the makings to be. Awesome. Night of the Seven Kingdoms is a lot of people's favorite Game of Thrones.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes.
Jordyn: Like. in in its totality you know the original game of thrones show fell off towards the end, people say. And I agree. so like and then even like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I agree as well.
Jordyn: house of the dragon like it gets very mixed reviews you know as it's coming out so i think like having the night of the seven kingdoms director like that somebody from that team specifically coming into this everybody feels very comfortable with that house of cards is well regarded and then i think we talked about it previously but some of the other writers are from uh andor star wars which Like. is probably the best received star wars property of the last
Jordyn: 10 15 20 years however far back you want to go based on your opinion so i think that team like doing that front end work of writing and directing.
Jordyn: is setting up for success and now they just need to get the casting right. And then this could be really, really epic.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I agree. I don't have anything to add to that you nailed it.
Chris: don't really care about anything. in that world so uh I'm fine with it, but I have no, I have no.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: What?
Chris: I have no connection to Game of Thrones.
Chris: I have not watched it. And I watched a little bit of House of the Dragon, but I just don't care about that world.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I did not.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I watched season one. I have not watched anything since. Chris, I would definitely recommend. A Night of the Seven Kingdoms because it's... Leak I really love things that can balance the serious topics but also like humor and heartwarming storylines.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I think that nails all three of those and it like balances it really well. And like Jordan said, it's one of the most well -received. of all of the game of thrones items and it's only had one season and their short episodes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That would definitely. Check that one out. Especially since this.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: is the same writer. Because like Jordan said, I think this movie is going to be really great. So definitely check out The Night of the Seven Kingdoms. That's your homework. this month.
Chris: i'll check it out i mean i also have not watched andor so you guys will probably be mad at me for that one too so
Jordyn: And you don't. You don't have to have seen anything else.
Jordyn: Dude.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Which one?
Jordyn: who are you i feel like i'm talking to a stranger
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Wait, what?
Chris: I also have not watched Andor is what I was saying today.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh, I haven't watched Andor either.
Jordyn: Gosh!
Chris: So we all have homework this month.
Jordyn: You guys.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know. I've heard such good things. And I love the Star Wars universe. I just. Haven't gotten there yet.
Jordyn: You guys.
Chris: I just got HBO Max back, though, so I probably will watch. I can check out the Night of Seven Kingdoms.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's real quick.
Chris: I can do that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It'll be a real quick binge.
Jordyn: And you don't need to have seen anything else. Like there's. the the if you get the connections you get them but it's done really well where if you've seen literally nothing else like you have
Jordyn: then it's not going to affect anything.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, it's just like another medieval.
Chris: My.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: shell for you right now
Chris: Yeah. My biggest problem with House of the Dragon was Matt Smith. I just could not stand his acting in that. Everybody else loves him in it, but I could not stand him.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Are you a Doctor Who fan?
Chris: Not of him. Of some of the other ones I've enjoyed, I did not care for his all that much.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.
Chris: He was okay. But like David Tennant, I love in that role.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, yeah
Chris: There's definitely been some other ones I've enjoyed.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And it's definitely my favorite.
Chris: It's not my, my fandom, but it's that I'm overly excited about, but it is something I've tried to catch up on.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Amen. Amen.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I was just wondering if it's just hard to separate him from the doctor because that was my immediate. like challenge watching that show was separating him because there's a completely different characters
Chris: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I really haven't seen him in a whole lot else.
Chris: Maybe.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think he's in The Crown as well, which is another darker. character than the doctor but
Chris: I also didn't enjoy them all that much in...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't think he's a terrible actor, but it's just...
Chris: And Morbius, he was the other bad guy in Morbius.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Night and day. I haven't seen that.
Chris: So it was okay, but I didn't love him in that much either. That movie was just... a little bit.
Jordyn: You can't hold Morbius against people.
Chris: rough put together.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: I don't know what he means.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: All right. Well, that is it for our updates on what we know is being adopted. Now we're going to get into books that have been picked up for adaptation and we're going to kick it off with. Maybe something that's going to excite Jordan here with the, or both of you actually. The King in Chronicles. is getting another shot at the screen with Disney Plus developing a live -action series based on Rick Riordan's best -selling trilogy.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Riordan is developing the series alongside Angela Robinson, and the story will follow siblings Carter and Sadie Kane as they discover their connection to ancient Egyptian magic.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: and become caught in a conflict between the gods. The project was previously being developed as a film trilogy at Netflix before that version fell through in 2024. There's currently no casting or premiere date announced.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I didn't realize this was Egyptian gods. I'm so sold now. I love the Egyptian gods. I've always been fascinated by ancient Egypt. I'm in. I'm so in. I can't wait to read these books.
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: So. yeah go ahead
Jordyn: No, go ahead, Chris, because I'll talk too much.
Chris: So this one, I read these books right after I finished reading the... the main series. recently And I think I was telling you about this a while back, Sarah Day. This is the one that is told as a two people. telling right like writing a like or two person narrators.
Chris: The kids are narrating the story, telling their story as the, as it goes along of what they experienced throughout these three books. And so they have these little squabbles as they go through, like even just their writing, like, no, no, I'm telling that part.
Chris: No, that's what happened. I'm sorry, Sadie. I'm telling it this way. And so it has a lot of really endearing back and forth between the siblings as they tell their story.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Cute.
Chris: I'm not sure how you can adapt that fully, but I really enjoy the storytelling elements of it. And the story is just really good. it does a good job of tying in slightly to the Percy Jackson side of things.
Chris: but not so heavily yet. I think it's supposed to come together later on past what I've read. It's definitely a lot of fun.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That might be a fun book for us to read with the kids
Jordyn: Yes.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: like with matthew and i reading to them together like i could read her part and he can read his part and like we can squabble together i think that would be really fun and then of course when the show comes out we can watch that with the girls too
Chris: There you go.
Chris: Absolutely. Might be a little bit of extra work to make sure you have your parts worked out before your nightly reads.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: We are building up to a Riordanverse. On Disney +, and I'm...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes.
Jordyn: Because he's got...
Chris: I'm totally in.
Jordyn: so many different series. And even if he didn't write them, he has provided a platform for authors of other ethnic backgrounds to tell. you know similar kind of stories with their respective pantheons so you like from india different parts of africa like all over the he has the norse mythology series so we really can get like
Chris: In that universe, yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I love it Yeah.
Jordyn: a whole riordan verse of different pantheons and these like wonderful like ya like true ya stories on Disney+. I'm pumped about that.
Jordyn: I... Yeah, I mean... Come on, I'm the Percy Jackson girl. I love Riordan. I love anything that he's written. I haven't read these in a very long time because I just kept rereading Percy Jackson because I love those so, so much. But I'm excited for the excuse to reread these. and get in there and i also you know have a fascination with.
Jordyn: ancient egypt and the gods and like the mummy and Even Moon Knight, when it came out, was so exciting to get a little taste of those things. I'm very... very very very excited.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I think that's going to be a lot of fun. Next up on our being picked up is Amazon MGM has gotten. He writes to Lauren Asher's Throttled, the first book in her best -selling Dirty Air series.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Off -campus star Josh Houston will play Formula One driver Noah Slade. with Nicole Wallace joining him as Maya Alatorre. Daisy Jones in The Sixth Director. Zynga Stewart is directing from a script by Melissa Osborne, and the film will stream on Prime Video, though a release date has not yet been announced.
Chris: Formula One driver, like one step away from a hockey romance.
Jordyn: In my mind, yes. In reality, I think they're very, very different.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I liked Daisy Jones and the Six, so I'll be interested to see what this director can do with the story and if that might be something I wait for a preview for. And if I like the preview, maybe I'll pick up the book.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: or if our listeners would like us to. cover this up. podcast, we will do so.
Chris: I'll be interested to see as more unfolds. I'm sure we'll be. reporting on it again in the future as it gets more info.
Jordyn: Quick interjection on Sarah Day's note. If any of these things... the listeners want us to cover, we will do it. You just have to tell us and we will cover it. Otherwise, we're just going to pick what we want.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yep.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, yeah. I mean, we love reading.
Jordyn: We're flexible.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right. Right. We're flexible. We love reading. We love watching TV and movies. So like if there's something that we're not, I mean, like Jordan always says, fantasy is her thing. We all have what. you know our normal genre is but we're all willing and excited to branch out on other genres so if there's something that we're covering on these news adaptations please write in and let us know So we can add this to our future calendars. We're happy to do so.
Jordyn: Except horror. Apparently.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I think that might be a little caveat.
Chris: Oh, yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But maybe we could do it once a year in October.
Jordyn: Anything else?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: MGM is a... MGM Plus is developing a series adaptation of John Sanford's Prey novels with Jensen Eccles attached to star as Detective Lucas Davenport.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The long -running crime series follows Davenport, a Minneapolis police detective who uses unconventional methods to track down some of the most dangerous criminals in the Midwest. Achilles is also attached as an executive producer. with no premiere date yet attached.
Chris: So just supernatural.
Jordyn: Damn it. I have to get MGM+.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I was thinking the same thing.
Jordyn: I... Love Jensen Ackles. I fell in love with him when I started Supernatural in high school and I have never not loved him since.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: As we all did, Jordan, as we all did.
Jordyn: So... Anything that he is in, I will watch simply because he's in it. He is one of those actors for me.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: I don't think there's a lot of those types of actors these days for like the wide populace, but he is one of those people for me where anything he's in, I will be watching. And so I guess that means I have to get MGM Plus at some point.
Jordyn: So I guess I will watch the Treasure Island show too, since I'll have it anyways for this.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, there's no premiere date yet, so we have time.
Jordyn: I'll wait for it, but I will be watching this just for him. Huh?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Allie Hazelwood has announced a sequel to The Love Hypothesis titled The Two -Body Problem, and a film adaptation is already in development. The new novel, arriving February 2nd, 2027. picks up with Olive Smith and Adam Carlson as they navigate postdoctoral life, demanding careers, and the challenges of their long -term relationship.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: MRC is developing the film for Amazon MGM Studios, although Hazelwood notes that nothing is guaranteed yet.
Chris: i haven't watched yet the love hypothesis so i don't know i can't say for sure if i'm excited about this yet or not but the love hypothesis looks really fun it looks like they've Put the work in on that.
Jordyn: I wouldn't.
Chris: I was just on a tangent in my brain that the names of these books sound like they might be like intentionally. like playing on like uh love hypothesis maybe being about uh like the
Chris: lessons in chemistry kind of a little bit and the two body problem being just to play on the three body problem that was I'm not sure about that. It just was my brain trying to make connections to other things here.
Jordyn: They are.
Chris: But.
Jordyn: chemists so you're not you're not off
Chris: Yeah, that's why I wondered about that
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm. I... I think a lot of her books are about like the different STEM. late categories.
Chris: Okay. That might make more sense.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: But, yeah, I think that she has a lot of good books out there. I'm sure this sounds like it could be a good thing to see the sequel coming from that. People seem to have enjoyed it.
Jordyn: I wonder if she was always going to announce the book at this time or if the movie did well and she was like, okay, I'll tell you now that it's coming.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, the movie does seem to be doing really well. It is something I think I would like to cover on the podcast because I like those actors. i'm always down for a rom -com and of course women in stem is always something i want to promote so Seems like there's nothing. not to cover this for.
Chris: Women in STEM fake dating their professors. Yes, that's a good idea to promote.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, you know, not the fake dating the professor part, but.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I don't know if it's necessarily like a student dating a professor because that's a no -no, but I think it's something along those lines.
Jordyn: It's a fictional novel.
Chris: Kidding.
Jordyn: She, I mean, she's In like a. Posh. a doctorate program so she's like in her. Like l - mid -20s so there's no question of any like underage situation but it is still like a power dynamic Weirdness.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay.
Jordyn: But I think. i haven't read it but i'm pretty sure age -wise they're relatively close in age But it's the power dynamic, really, that is. in a real life situation would be not great.
Jordyn: But.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: It's a fantasy romance novel. So it's not fantasy. It's a fictional romance novel.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Fiction.
Jordyn: So it's fine. It's fine.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well that is all we have for you guys today for our news. We will be back. next month covering all of the news that comes out this month so stay tuned We've got a good lineup of books coming out this month on the podcast. We're doing.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Harry Potter has already released. We have... Twilight. Practical Magic and Verity.
Jordyn: Dirt.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: coming out so please stay tuned and again if there's anything you want us to cover let us know
Jordyn: Mm -hmm
