Jordyn: Welcome back to another episode of Book Watch, the podcast where we read books and watch their movies and or shows and determine how good the medium did of adapting the story. Today we are covering book two of the Twilight Saga, which is called New Moon by Stephanie Meyer, originally published in 2006 and adapted to film in 2009.
Jordyn: The book was written by Stephanie Meyer, who also served as a screenwriter for the project alongside Melissa Rosenberg. The film was directed by Chris Weitz. And.
Jordyn: I'm so excited to talk about this. My name is Jordan.
Chris: I'm Chris.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I'm Sarah Day.
Jordyn: I will be back right after these quick ads.
Jordyn: Okay. Where the hell have you been, Loka? We're here. Book two.
Jordyn: We... Now we can say it since we're actually recording. Sarah Day and I find this to be. our favorite of the series. because of the lack of edward and then chris was just about to tell us Probably it's his wife's least favorite.
Jordyn: for the exact same reason, because there's a significant lack of Edward. Chris, please tell us a little bit more about Rachel's thoughts.
Chris: She's typing right now. I asked her because I don't know the exact reason so for me
Chris: This movie could have been so much better. It already has a little bit of a Romeo and Juliet all throughout. They think she committed suicide, so then Edward goes to commit suicide. If only he had actually gotten all the way through with it, then she could have committed suicide, and it could have been a perfect Romeo and Juliet.
Chris: But they stop it right before they get to those moments.
Jordyn: You're the worst.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I mean, maybe in the sense that, like, he turns her into a vampire in this book, but then, like, we wouldn't have the next two books.
Jordyn: So...
Chris: No, no I mean, if he had gotten through with his plan with the Volturi and just let himself be killed, and then he'd be dead because he thought she was dead, which is exactly what happens in Romeo and Juliet, and then she could kill herself, and it would have been a perfect Romeo and Juliet.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But she's still alive.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And then she would kill herself? Hmm.
Chris: Of course, you know.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I mean...
Jordyn: Chris is just a hater.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know that you're anti Twilight series. I'm somewhere in the middle, but i don't know that that would have been the best message to send these teenage girls back in the day
Chris: Last night, when we were watching it, I said that reference to Rachel, and then I said I did the whole still a better love story than Twilight.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Stop.
Jordyn: I said...
Chris: It was the. uh reason she said last night i know she said that if she watched it or if she had just read it now she probably would be more of a jacob fan but at the time in high school she was an edward edward simp so
Jordyn: Which is valid. I found a tweet yesterday. or a post on x whatever that I sent to to these guys and it said no one understands the bond between a girl and the mediocre book she read when she was 13 years old and that's literally twilight for me I literally started reading this series on my 13th birthday I told you guys last episode that was like my big thing when I turned 13 is my mom let me read these books and so Like.
Jordyn: I do have a very deep. bond with the Twilight series and You guys can hate it all you want, but I love being here. I love Twilight. This is all very, very exciting for me. was and at least so far during this reread i remain team jacob
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: the way that she described like obviously everything is very overdramatic very angsty between her and edward but the way that she describes jacob like he's her own personal son and he's warmth and he's joy and he brings her out of the depression i'm like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: That's what you need, girl. Like this.
Chris: Well...
Jordyn: All this.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But okay, wait, I have lots of thoughts.
Jordyn: Back and forth with Edward.
Chris: But her husband also looks like Jacob after the transformation.
Chris: He's a big, muscly dude. So, you know, that might be part of it, you know.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: First, I want to say. as of now this is my like i like this one better than twilight i don't remember the next two books i vaguely remember the movies like this is not something that i go back to every year like harry potter or the hunger games so like While I do remember what happens in the later books, I couldn't tell you if this is my favorite, but I did like it better. Both the movie and well, I didn't really get through the whole book, but I did like this story.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: better than the original story. And again, I do think that's because Jacob and I do remember wholeheartedly being Team Jacob back in the day. And then.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I... Don't. It's not that I hate on this as much as Chris does, but it is. Because I remember I was a Twilight fan. Like I liked it back in the day. I think I've just Like you said, you were 13. I was older. And so I don't have that same attachment, like I said, with Harry Potter or the Hunger Games. So it just doesn't have that same nostalgia factor to me. I think it's still a really fun and interesting story, but I think it's just too...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: immature. You know, you look at like True Blood, which has a love triangle between a vampire and a werewolf also. And it's just way more of a mature story.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So I like that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: You know, I love fantasy and I love vampires and werewolves and that gothic fantasy trope. but To go on to continue what you were saying, Jordan, about Jacob being the warmth and the sun and getting her out of. her depression.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That can still be. a platonic friendship like that she explains him She explains to him that he's her best friend. And while. it's unrequited love for him.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: She still does love him. But as a friend, which you you know like look at the three of us like chris you're one of our best friends and you are a man and like you could still be that warmth for us. He just wants more for her. And like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That is what she needed.
Chris: Well, she wants more, but she can't, she doesn't want romantic love. She talks about it throughout the book about how she wishes he was her brother because she wants a claim on him, but she doesn't want to be romantic with him because she doesn't want to.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: move on from Edward mostly.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, and I mean, there's a difference. Between. Like yeah, she's pining over Edward. And she does need to get over it. But for the sake of the story, obviously she can't. you know, they're, you know, the whole soulmate.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: aspect of it But I don't, I also don't think. Jacob would have been a good life partner for her. Like at the end of the day, it is Bella.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: and Edward. But I... I just. Love. I just like to see and we're getting a lot more of that in today's TV, but platonic best friends, like different gender platonic best friends like in Ted Lasso, you've got Rebecca and Ted and I love their friendship.
Jordyn: mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And so. It's just. You know on on Back in that time, the love triangle was a huge thing.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: You know, what was it? The vampire diaries was another one. And so.
Chris: That's the one my wife compared it to. She thinks that Vampire Diaries was a better Twilight. because she's been watching that a lot more recently.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mmm.
Chris: And that's how she sees it now.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But see, I do like the aspect that it's a vampire versus a werewolf. Like that's why I compared it to the true blood because I do love like the different types of quote monsters. And like just being.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay. like trying to choose which path you want to take. Like, do you want to be a vampire? Do you want to be in a werewolf clan?
Chris: One of my big complaints with this story is that why did we stop with just two monsters? Where are the rest of the monsters in the world? I mean, if these two are true, where are the mermaids? Where's Bigfoot?
Chris: I mean, give us the rest of the myths.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, let's go to True Blood then because there's lots of monsters in that one.
Chris: Keep going. I do need to read those ones because I've never gone down that road or watched it or anything. So I don't know that one. But I have been reading a few other.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh yeah, there's fairies, all kinds of stuff.
Chris: books that I mean I picked up I think I've told you guys before I picked up the Anita Blake series a while back and it's it's very much just smut filth, but also the the the story told throughout has a lot more of the lore stuff and that's what i like about it is you've got you've got vampires that are the master of the city that have a animal to call they've got just all this you know it's got a
Chris: uh all the different monsters that are not just the shapeshifters for the wolves, but also you've got lion shifters, tiger shifters, you've got leopard shifters, you've got rats that are shifters.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Chris: And so it's a world that has all these creatures in it. And, you know, the It. tells a good story and she's a necromancer and it just you know all this stuff is goes deep into the monster lore and that's what i actually enjoy about the series it's just pretty long But yeah, it's been.
Chris: interesting read for sure but Back to Twilight.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I definitely, yeah, I, well, I definitely think that you should check out True Blood and maybe that's something we can cover.
Chris: Okay.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: on the podcast but they they have i mean there's in the very first season there's a shapeshifter and vampires vampires of course is the main
Chris: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: part of the show but there's a shapeshifter and then i think that might be it for the first season with hints of Other. I haven't read the books. I've only seen the show. And again, not something that I've, I think I've rewatched it just twice. But yeah, let's go back to Twilight now. Jordan, back to you.
Jordyn: I. i think you guys are asking too much of twilight like at the end at the end here's the thing here's the thing here's the thing at the end of the day twilight is an angsty teenage romance
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, yeah, yeah
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: with supernatural stuff thrown in. And like that at its core, like it's not. It's not. meant to be anything. bigger than that i think like it the fact that it became yeah i just want to i'm just trying to defend my baby over here a little bit because you guys are because you guys are making great points like there is a lot like you know just again like i said last time too like living in reality they're objectively not that good
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I do understand that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: No, I mean like. No, no, no. Again, I'm... middle of the road
Jordyn: But like they still were a. super huge cultural phenomenon.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes.
Jordyn: Oh - in the realm, maybe not as big, but in the realm of Harry Potter or The Hunger Games, something like that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: No, absolutely.
Jordyn: More so, much more so than something like True Blood or Vampire Diaries, which were very popular in their own right, but never, they're not Twilight level of fame. you know what i mean like if somebody
Chris: We got our sound clip. We got Jordan saying, objectively, they're not very good. So we can put that up on the Instagram.
Jordyn: I admitted it last week.
Chris: i know We're going to keep clipping that out and throwing it up.
Jordyn: You don't have to keep making that same joke at me, sir.
Chris: We're going to get a compilation of all the times Jordan says it's actually not great. Just kidding.
Jordyn: well here's the thing though is i don't even believe that like i actually do think that they're good like i don't like the fact that this movie has 28 on rotten tomatoes i think is astounding
Jordyn: I think that's cool. crazy i'm like who's judging this movie i don't think it's that bad i genuinely like i
Chris: well who do you think the people who review movies on rotten tomatoes are from that for that score It's probably a bunch of middle aged white men.
Jordyn: Well, that's like critic score.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Well, right. So that's why I'm like. you know I don't know. I just, I'm talking like Bella now because I'm so flabbergasted at that score.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Ha ha!
Jordyn: Which, which... Is annoying. I like when she gets all stuttery and. Ugh. Anyways. Cultural impact. I think the biggest cultural impact of this.
Jordyn: book of this movie specifically is the where the hell have you been loca meme. Genuinely like that. and the soundtrack and the incredible VFX of the wolves.
Jordyn: Like those are some like. The VFX and the soundtrack are like genuinely great points. Like so many of the songs in this movie, like I get. were playing on the radio at the time that this movie came out A lot of people use them like in memes or in fan edits, even of other properties.
Jordyn: and then the visual effects of the wolves like i used to have the dvd and i would watch like the behind the scenes because i used to do kids back in the day there was these things called dvds and on the dvd you had the movie and also behind the scenes explanations and clips of how they made the movie and the way that they did the wolves was just incredible.
Jordyn: Like you have. you know, Taylor Lautner there in a in a morph suit. you know bending over so she could pet his head and stuff like it's And the effects hold up, I feel, even almost 20 years later.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, yeah, for 20 years later. Yeah, I absolutely agree with you. because like yeah you could tell like would it be better today probably but It was not bad. It didn't stand out as cheesy or anything.
Jordyn: Yeah. Mm -mm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: You know, the acting and the dialogue is what's the most cheesy.
Jordyn: mm -hmm
Jordyn: But...
Chris: We did see a big wolf in...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Ha ha!
Jordyn: She wrote this cheesy teenage angst story.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Absolutely.
Jordyn: that got I think like got let out of its box and people were like oh my god like what do you mean this made it big like I feel like it's genuinely shocking that Twilight made it this big but like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well...
Jordyn: This is exactly how it was written, pretty much.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: See this is why I think it made it this big because this is the same time As true blood. that I was just talking about. I'm going to pull up the time when that first season came up. True Blood, an HBO show, was huge at the time.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And.
Jordyn: for the adults
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes.
Jordyn: So now moms can watch True Blood, which is what my mom was doing.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Eh.
Jordyn: And then her daughter was reading Twilight.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: But now moms and daughters can read Twilight and then go see the films.
Jordyn: Yes. And that's exactly what happened to my house.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: 2008 was when the first season came out of True Blood. So right in between these two books, I think.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: When did the first movie come out?
Jordyn: In 2008. Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay, so. Again. True blood, just like. you know, chaos. And then you've got. The Harry Potter fantasy. You've got the Hunger Games. all this stuff is all going on and so it's that like dystopian teen Young adult. and then fantasy And.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: you know like we talk about with harry potter how harry potter got so big the internet We're all talking about it. We're all sharing on the forums about it. We're all telling our friends at school about it. So like I'm not surprised at all. that it got as popular as it did.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And. I do go into it knowing it's a cheesy teenage. book series you know and so the movies are going to be just like all the cw shows like the vampire diaries like i'm not taking those seriously either like it's just
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Something to put on when. I need something in the background or just need like a palette cleanser before like in between. More serious.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: mature adult. books or shows.
Jordyn: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris: With Murderbot and Karen Page in it, I think I could get behind True Bloods for sure.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah I should have thought about that.
Chris: Alexandra Skarsgård and Debra Ann Wolf, yeah. I love both of them.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, and Rogue.
Chris: Amen. Yeah, I guess so. I don't really. I'm not an X -Men person that much, so.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh.
Chris: But yes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, no, you should definitely check it out.
Jordyn: Alright.
Chris: Caps and ads.
Jordyn: Let's...
Chris: There's a lot of actors in this. Anyways, back to Twilight.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yes, there is. There it
Jordyn: Let's move along.
Chris: So.
Jordyn: Let's move along
Chris: What was with those motorcycles, though? Those were not the motorcycles described in the book. There was a vintage Harley described in the book. And then we get these just these just.
Jordyn: these are like dirt bikes right
Chris: dirt bike things that show up in in the movie I'm like
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: Okay, come on. You could have paid a little attention to that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I don't know enough about motorcycles to... comment on that.
Jordyn: Yeah, I couldn't tell you the difference other than I can.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Listeners, if you know motorcycles, please let us know what these...
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: He...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Compare the descriptions to the... Show, please.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: I looked it up, the one from the book, and it was the one he talked about, at least the model and everything, was like a Harley Stingray, which would have been like a 1967 Harley or something like that. He said it would actually be worth money. And I was like, neither of these bikes that they're doing in the film are. ever going to be worth any money they're just they're just meant to be like destroyed Bye.
Chris: Dirt bike.
Jordyn: Tough.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, when I type in Harley Stingray, it's a literal bicycle.
Chris: I might have been.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So.
Chris: stinger maybe i don't know there it was it was something along those lines i forget now but i definitely looked it up when i was like that's that's not what they that's not what the film had those kind of attention to detail things are what i care about a lot of times so
Jordyn: Well... this The... This series is not exactly known for its deep and hard hitting research.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Nah.
Jordyn: So you're going to continue to be disappointed probably.
Chris: And it shows. Harley Sprint. Sorry, Harley Sprint is the model that was...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Got it.
Chris: And, uh... Yeah, describe it in the book.
Jordyn: Let's get into some cast. So Bella and Edward are still Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.
Jordyn: We don't see as much.
Chris: Sadly.
Jordyn: Edward in this film.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: If you're happy about that, join the club. If you're not sorry for your loss. The Cullens are all the same people as last time. Jacob and Billy Black.
Jordyn: Still bigger roles in this movie than they had in Twilight, but still Taylor Lautner and Gil Birmingham. We add Harry Clearwater, who's played by Graham Greene. He is another tribal elder in the Quillettes, and he's another one of Charlie's best friends.
Jordyn: his biggest thing is that he dies of a heart attack, which is a change from the way that his heart attack comes about is a change between the book and the movie. And I think a really good change. But we'll get to that in a hot second.
Chris: I'm impressed by the guys group that Charlie has maintained in this.
Jordyn: Charlie.
Chris: He has quite a few male, male friends and that's, that's tough for a, for a middle -aged guy sometimes.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Jordyn: Yeah. And speaking of Charlie, he's played by Billy Burke. I talked about it a little bit last week, but it's much clearer to see in this movie that movie Charlie is way better than book Charlie. Book Charlie was just like, oh, you're having nightmares where you're waking up screaming every night? Sounds like a you problem. Can't be bothered. Versus movie Charlie comes in every night, wakes her up, tries to soothe her, is involved in taking care of her. So shout out Billy Burke for making Charlie redeemable.
Jordyn: And then we've got the Wolf Pack, Sam, Paul, Embry, and Quill. So Sam is played by, Sam Uley is played by Chase Spencer. Paul is Alex Mraz. Embry is Kiowa Gordon. And Quill is Tyson Hausman.
Jordyn: Pretty small roles in this film, but I wanted to make sure we included them because, spoilers, they will be bigger in the next one.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: which one one of these guys has a sister right
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Or are they both new characters?
Jordyn: That would be Seth. We haven't met Seth and Leah yet, but those are Harry's children.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Okay. Okay. Got it.
Jordyn: Yes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: oh okay okay okay
Jordyn: Yeah, so Harry Clearwater, who dies in this one, leaves behind his widow, Sue, and then their two children, Leah and Seth. Leah and Seth become... uh characters that we actually meet in the pack.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Part of the pack. Oh. Spoiler alert.
Jordyn: Spoilers in Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.
Jordyn: We still have. Bella's friends kind of sort of that she hangs out with Mike and Jessica. Mike Newton played by Michael Welch and Jessica played by Anna Kendrick who actually kills it.
Jordyn: once again in this role.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know. I just love Edna Kendrick so much.
Jordyn: And one, she's great as Jessica as well, which is awesome.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: Laurent Edie Gathegi and Victoria Rochelle Lefebvre. And then we add the Volturi. Aro, played by Michael Sheen.
Jordyn: Caius, played by Jamie Campbell Bauer.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Love him.
Jordyn: And Marcus. Christopher Heyerdahl. And then we have the... Evil twins, Jane and Alec. played by Dakota Fanning and Cameron Bright. Some pretty big names in the Volturi.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: family.
Jordyn: Yeah. So. Most of this cast is returning, but for any new cast, do we have any thoughts on? performances in this movie, even the returning cast? How did we do?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: i don't think anything stands out to me it's nice to see you know as part of the votory Michael Sheen obviously kills it. It's nice to see Jamie Campbell Bauer in that role as small as it is.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's just, I love him. because of City of Bones and then most recently Vecna. And so to see him in one of his earlier roles is just a lot of fun. And then, of course, Dakota Fanning. as jane is phenomenal and will she'll stand out in any role that she's in really but you know they're gonna play a huge part coming up so just to kind of see these actors and get a sense of what's how intense they can be.
Jordyn: mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That scene, I'm getting ahead of myself, but I don't remember it, but when they're leaving after the Volturi have excused them and they're bringing in the tour guides and she looks at the kids and then you hear all that. Like anything with kids these days, I can't do it as a mom now. I don't think it bothered me. I'm sure I was sad back in the day when I was.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: 18, 19, whatever but like to see her want to go back and edward has to pull her away i'm like yeah i would i would have broken those doors down too to see kids getting attacked by vampires was awful.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: So yeah, they're scary people.
Jordyn: Chris, I know you have some thoughts somewhere in there.
Chris: No. I think I'm glad we're expanding. You know, we've got some more some more vampires to work with, you know, with the Valtore. I think that having more cast. of these characters expanding that out actually seeing some more of the bigger world is. Cool to see in this one.
Chris: that's seen all throughout the The Valtorius.
Chris: building the complex was definitely A lot of. Yep. strain on the like you're watching this the stress that they're going through walking through this much more formalized vampire world and so that uh was much more interesting to see the change from being just, you know, this. laid -back family that uh just cares about each other to this.
Chris: formalized vampire world. So I liked most of the way that they portrayed that.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: I did not finish the end of the book, as I told you guys. At least not this time. I've read it before. So I have only the film to go off for how all that played out but as far as the adaption go adaptation goes but Definitely was.
Chris: Cool to see more. of an expanded world.
Jordyn: i will get to that i want to shout out taylor lautner as jaco black i think he does I mean, as good of a job as you can do with this script.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Heh heh.
Jordyn: I think he does a great. Like given the confines of the script, I think he does a great job within those confines. I really believe like his and Bella's relationship.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: I really believe. everything between them. And I think he does a really good job.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I actually like their chemistry more like I know I was saying how much I like that it's a platonic friendship but they definitely had a lot more chemistry even as friends than bella or well as
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Why can't I, let me scroll back up here to the actors.
Jordyn: Edward.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: They know of Kristen and Robert have together.
Jordyn: Oh yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think that Kristen and Taylor. have a lot more chemistry like i believe that they're friends i believe that there's that you know friendship love between them i even think like that's some of her about like i think her acting
Jordyn: Mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Is better in this movie. than it is in the first one like i just like them together better and maybe that's because i'm team jacob i don't know but i just like their scenes better
Jordyn: I think after we see Eclipse, you'll have a better idea because like Edward is.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: present in that one so you'll have a more equal side -by -side comparison of Bella with Edward versus Bella with Jacob.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep. We'll be sure to comment on that next time.
Jordyn: but
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Ask me.
Jordyn: Yes, I will. Yes I will.
Jordyn: Okay. Let's get through this plot. So we open.
Chris: Always what I'm saying.
Jordyn: both. Huh?
Chris: That's always what I'm saying when these movies start let's get through this plot
Jordyn: Hmm. You're so mean!
Chris: Or what counts as plot in this movie.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The plot is what's good, Chris. The plot is what's good.
Chris: I didn't see one, sorry
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's the dialogue, that is.
Jordyn: You literally noted that it was a Romeo and Juliet. retelling.
Chris: It really is. It's entirely that.
Jordyn: Yes. So that's the plot is Romeo and Juliet.
Chris: Does that really have a plot the fact that the movie opens up i am uh the fact the movie opens up with her laying there next to her copy of romeo and juliet and then that's what basically plays out throughout was
Jordyn: He's rage baiting me.
Chris: It was a fun little Easter egg that I liked.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And they're watching it in the school classroom.
Chris: In.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And she talks about it in the book too, right?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That she's reading it.
Chris: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: They watch it at home.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Chris: Just hurting.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That's right Edward.
Chris: the movie in the book but
Jordyn: Yeah. but she continuously references it throughout the book she is like well if
Chris: Okay.
Jordyn: At the end, like when Edward and Jacob.
Chris: Yeah, she argues with herself about it, yeah.
Jordyn: you know Edward and Jacob do have that meeting at the end. And she's like, you know, Romeo and Paris meet, Paris falls. And so she's like, which one's Romeo, which one's Paris?
Jordyn: Like, I don't know. So that thread, that comparison of everything to Romeo and Juliet is throughout the entire book, yeah.
Jordyn: Anyways, that's the very end. Back to the beginning. We open with her dreaming of her grandmother who has passed. And then it turns into a nightmare when she realizes that she is just her grandmother.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: All right.
Jordyn: She has aged into an old woman and Edward being a vampire is still. 17 and beautiful and perfect and that is like her ultimate nightmare is to grow old without.
Jordyn: Edward.
Chris: He might just be into that. That might be what he's waiting for.
Jordyn: I... No. Maybe.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I mean, he is 100 himself.
Jordyn: That would...
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: I guess. And then she wakes up and it's the morning of her 18th. birthday she's so not like other girls she doesn't want anyone to talk about her birthday or acknowledge it or celebrate it in any way
Chris: Like every girl I know at their 18th birthday.
Jordyn: But. Yeah. Totally. so naturally her parents. don't care they get her gifts anyways and alice is alice and completely disrespects bella's wishes and is like we're having a birthday party at our house be there
Jordyn: You're right, Chris. There is a difference. The movie shows them watching Romeo and Juliet in class with their teacher. in the book. they go home after school and watch it as part of their homework.
Jordyn: But either way, they still end up at the Cullen's house where Bella gets a paper cut. Triggers Jasper because he's still even after. several decades, he's still not strong when it comes to avoiding human blood, especially her blood, which we know is very potent.
Jordyn: And so... he goes to attack her once the drop of blood comes out and it's a whole scene edward makes things worse by throwing her into a wall and breaking glass into her arm which causes more blood Which like I get you're trying to get her away from Jasper, but like there had to have been a better way like you could have picked her up and moved her and then come like i don't know
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like, yeah, picture up a brand. You're fast. Get her out of there.
Jordyn: right like you didn't have to throw her into a wall and like break a vase into her arm but
Jordyn: I digress.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, we needed the drama.
Jordyn: We needed the drama and we needed the setup for her to have the conversation with Carlisle.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: Which we talked about it last time, but the explanation of like Carlisle's backstory and the Volturi introduction actually happens in Twilight the book. But we get that whole conversation exposition in.
Jordyn: this scene here where carlyle is carlyle the only member of the family who purposely puts himself around human blood every day as a doctor, is able to clean her wounds, stitch her up, and they have this really lovely...
Jordyn: conversation during that scene.
Chris: I feel like the scene in the book is a little more expansive here. She has, she asked a lot more questions. We get a lot more information, but it was, yeah, definitely gave us. Some of the info that. we were missing from that context.
Jordyn: Yeah. And it helps explain, like, Edwards. thoughts regarding like her soul and like their status whether they're damned to hell or not which directly translates into him deciding to leave. He...
Jordyn: It seems like he pretty much unilaterally decides that it's not safe for her to be around the Cullens. And so he. My interpretation, my understanding, based on the text and the film, is that he basically tells the rest of the Cullens.
Jordyn: Pack it up. We're getting out of here. for Bella's safety. And so sorry if anybody else, you know, wanted to stay and be in Forks, like too bad, like we're leaving. So then he takes her. to... He meets her after school.
Jordyn: And he takes her a little. In the book, it's very clearly described as a little ways into the woods where she can still see her house. And he has the conversation, which is pretty much word for word, like dialogue wise, straight out of the text. I don't want you. I don't want you to. You're not coming with us. You're not invited.
Jordyn: I don't love you anymore. like We're leaving. It'll be as if I never existed. and he does leave and she being you know main character syndrome starts following him into the woods gets lost gets tired falls asleep in the woods.
Jordyn: and Sam Uli.
Chris: As one does.
Jordyn: As you do, naturally. And then Sam Yulee. as though actually the one who finds her and carries her out of the woods back to Charlie.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This is kind of the part where I was listening to this morning. And. I was impressed with how well they adapted that scene because like in the movie.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: you see like you can hear the the wolf breathing and then you kind of see the wolf in the shadows and then i think like the next moment it's like him as a human carrying her.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And in the book. And she's explaining, I think, that she can hear the sounds. and then the next thing you know she's being carried and i'm like oh wow that's really great from page to screen.
Jordyn: mm -hmm Mhm. mm -hmm Yeah. The only big change that I noticed was that Visually, at least it looks like Edward takes her deeper into the woods.
Jordyn: I'm not like other girls. plain ordinary looking and i'm just such a klutz but she like genuinely like that's a dangerous situation for her to be in not being able to navigate out of the woods and Edward abandons her there.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: versus again in the book she can literally see her house and she chooses to go deeper into the woods to try to somehow try to chase him down and convince him to come back to her.
Jordyn: And then we get, honestly. Like genuinely one of the best interpretations of depression in media is her sitting in front of the window and we go through October, November, December, January with us.
Jordyn: that iconic song Crazy, impressive needle drop.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: and Like that. And in the book, which I think is like. very...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, I don't remember if I...
Jordyn: very fascinating that she did that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I, and I. This is what I commented. I don't remember if it was on air for our Twilight. coverage or if i said this to you guys off air but This is something that I distinctly remember.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: when this movie was coming out a lot of people were talking about oh i wonder how they're gonna do that and like even when the book came out i remember girls being like it's just pages of like you go through pages and it's just the month.
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And then when the movie was coming out, they were like, oh, how are we going to adapt that? And. I think you and I both agree, Jordan, like they did that so well with her just sitting at the window with the camera panning around her and what's happening outside the window.
Jordyn: Mm -hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: You can see the seasons changing and like you're right, the music is what makes it so emotional. And I agree, it's a really good depiction of somebody.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: going through a breakup and just going into that state of depressiveness, not wanting to. Do anything. And the conversation. To continue on with the plot. i think This is actually where I stopped reading today. Is the conversation with.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: charlie and her and i did get to the school with her she's about to ask jessica to go on a date or whatever but seeing the conversation. Again, I think the movie version is a little kinder. than the book version of the conversation but everything I think you said it earlier, like these are really great adaptations.
Jordyn: Mhm.
Jordyn: Yeah. And you're right. The conversation with Charlie. In the... In the book, it read like... I can't deal with this. you know i'm just a helpless dad i don't know what to do like and he like doesn't he he already we've established that he doesn't come in and check on her anymore with her nightmares he doesn't you know try to soothe her at all when those are happening every single freaking night
Jordyn: And so it. it reads like, I can't deal with this. So I'm shipping you off to live with your mother versus in the movie, the way that Billy Burke.
Jordyn: delivers it is I'm really worried about you. Obviously, you're not. in a healthy place obviously it's because of edward maybe you need to get away from here maybe the best thing for you is to be out of this area where there's so many memories of him and go be with your mom.
Jordyn: And so it's just the way that Billy Burke like acts it and delivers it is. much more loving, caring. concern for her welfare than my interpretation of what is said in the book, even though the words are very similar.
Chris: now we get more context in that when alice shows up later and and we hear charlie and her talking while she while they think she's still asleep you get a little more of like oh he was really worried about her this is was what was going through her his head of like i gotta figure out how to get her safe from whatever is causing her pain here and we got to get her out of here because this is not a good environment for her right now and then she pulls herself out through jacob's help but
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: So that adds context. But yeah, I agree. It was. better handled at that point in the story in the movie.
Jordyn: Yeah. Well, and we don't even get that conversation with Alice in the movie. As always, the movie version cuts down on the timing.
Jordyn: quite a bit And so. Instead of. Alice spending the night at Bella's house and having that conversation with Charlie the next morning. And then they fly off to Italy. It's literally.
Jordyn: We drown. Jacob rescues us. We go home. Alice is there. And then literally within like 30 minutes, we're on the road. We're going to Italy. versus that whole thing is stretched out over a couple of days naturally.
Chris: As one does.
Jordyn: obviously. When the guy who abandons you is like, oh, I'm going to kill myself about it. Naturally, you go to Italy instead of telling him like. Sounds like a you problem, but. Whatever.
Jordyn: Again, angsty teenage romance. Not real life.
Chris: She should have brought her emotional support animal.
Jordyn: Anyways.
Jordyn: Yeah, Jacob.
Chris: Yes, Jacob, you got it.
Jordyn: You're going to fit that giant wolf onto the plane.
Chris: He's a support animal.
Jordyn: The...
Chris: You can't say no to him.
Jordyn: Ma 'am, he's... about. half his he's his size is about half the size of the plane so like that's actually not going to work unfortunately just logistically
Chris: The Cullens have all the money. They probably chartered a private jet.
Chris: They could have fit him.
Jordyn: Yeah, maybe. Okay. So. Charlie has a conversation with Bella and he wants her to.
Jordyn: Go to Jacksonville. She absolutely refuses. That's not happening. He's like, you need to Like... you're a zombie and so in the book she actually compares herself to a zombie which i think is funny because like you were saying chris there aren't any other supernatural creatures
Chris: Where are the zombies in this world?
Jordyn: Other than... Right. It's Bella. Bella's the zombie in this world.
Chris: Bella's the zombie in the whole time. It's always been there.
Chris: That's why they cast Kristen Stewart.
Jordyn: Yeah. That's mean.
Chris: Oh, sorry.
Jordyn: So.
Chris: True.
Jordyn: Cheers. In an effort to convince Charlie that she's actually super duper fine and everything is normal, she calls up Anna Kendrick's Jessica and is like, hey, do you want to go see a movie in Port Angeles? And they go see a zombie movie because Bella cannot handle a romance or a rom -com.
Jordyn: And after the movie, this is where Bella hallucinates Edward's voice for the first time. And I actually really like the depiction. or the way that they did this in the movie of showing like the like fog version of him, making it more real.
Jordyn: to her instead of just like a voice in her head But she. I am, okay. I really tried to like come up with a way to defend her behavior here. And I just can't because there's I really don't care how in love with Edward you are.
Jordyn: Do not get on the back of some random dude's motorcycle. Like that's so unsafe like and and she's
Sarah-Daye McDougall: She's a teenage girl. She's not thinking through.
Jordyn: i know but like she's trying and i know that she's in the book it explains where she's trying to She thinks it's the same guy. And so she's kind of like. being very obviously being very irrational but she's like maybe if i recreate the situation that happened a year ago where those dudes were cornering her in the alley and edward saved her maybe he'll magically show up to save me and that's when she gets so she is like rewarded with that thought process because she does get the hallucination
Jordyn: But the. the movie having her actually get on the dude's bike and drive away i was like Please don't. Please, like, this is so not safe. There's like, please don't let the young girls see this and think that this is OK.
Jordyn: So I actually.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, Jessica really gives it to her, so.
Jordyn: as she should and i actually really love that she does because like you can't like she's it's so so stupid for her to do that even with you know you're obsessed and you want to hear edward's voice i get that to a degree but like we still need to be safe
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: at some level.
Chris: so My... question throughout and like i said i didn't finish the last couple Hours of the book. Is she actually just hallucinating, Edward? Is that all that was?
Chris: Because it felt like it should have been some sort of like...
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: uh because she made that promise some sort of magic or something it's what would have made more sense uh that he actually would have been able to you know say something to her or something i was just like it doesn't really the hallucination idea doesn't really stick for me very well it's just odd so
Jordyn: Unless it's talked about in another book and I don't remember, I'm pretty sure it's just her hallucinating. Which, again, if you think about it, it makes perfect sense because Stephanie Meyer hallucinates Edward talking to her.
Jordyn: So why wouldn't Bella hallucinate Edward talking to Bella?
Chris: I mean, it's
Jordyn: Like, it makes perfect sense if you think about it.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm
Jordyn: So but this interaction, you know, with the dude's motorcycle and her thinking that it was something about the motorcycles.
Jordyn: you know and like the adrenaline of that moment was what triggered the hallucination is what inspires her to She sees in the book, she sees these. bikes.
Jordyn: outside someone's house or trying to get rid of them she's like oh can i take them and then she is talking She has the whole conversation with herself about like, I should take it to a mechanic. No, it won't work. She's like, aha, I have a friend who's a mechanic. Let me take them to Jacob. And so she goes down to La Push.
Jordyn: And then I like the whole. montage basically shortening down the process of the two of them spending pretty much every day together. and building the bikes and putting them together. building their relationship, and she starts.
Jordyn: She starts to heal and Charlie notices a difference. Jacob obviously notices a difference. She even acknowledges the difference within herself that like. The pain isn't as bad when Jacob's around. She starts sleeping through the night after she spends days with him. Like everything.
Jordyn: about her life gets better when Jacob is around and when she spends time with him.
Chris: That just ruins her angsty personality. She loses herself. by becoming a happy person.
Jordyn: It's not healthy to be angsty all the time. We're trying to heal over here.
Jordyn: The only thing I didn't... Well... It's not even that I didn't like it. I just think it's a bummer. In the book, like... Jacob. of his own volition notices things about bella like you cannot talk about the cullens you cannot mention edward's name don't even go near that
Jordyn: He notices that she doesn't like music. He notices all these little things about her versus in the movie, she just tells him, hey, I don't like music anymore. It just doesn't. i don't want to listen to that and he's like okay no music what else you want to talk about So like that him.
Jordyn: That version of Jacob like losing that. trait of like being attentive to her and paying attention to her needs and wants is a bummer but like it's not that big of a deal I guess
Chris: wonder what kind of trauma that comes out of for jacob i mean usually you get that way because you're in tune with you know people in your family that have like a abusive parent that you uh you know You notice these things because when you do this thing, something happens to you. So I wonder if it's something to do with the way the Wolf Clan, you know.
Chris: raises people or something like that. It could have just been a... weird you know just a personality trait she gave him but you know a lot of that stuff normally comes out of trauma the attentiveness like that
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Well, Jacob's mother is never mentioned
Chris: Right. That's what I'm wondering.
Jordyn: We don't even get a name for her. But Billy is always described as being very loving, very kind, very, very gentle with Jacob.
Chris: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: So I think like that's definitely a good point. And I think if. It's not ever talked about, but if Based on what we do know, it would have had to have been his mother if that's where it came from. It also could just be that he's a good.
Chris: I could do it too.
Jordyn: That's literally it.
Chris: yeah fair if i'm not kind to my sister if i don't listen to my sisters and pay attention to these things they get mean and treat me badly too that could be part of it that's a sibling relationship too
Jordyn: Doh.
Chris: I had five of them, I know.
Jordyn: I'm a sister. I don't do that.
Chris: If you're not the one that does it.
Jordyn: But I'm a sister to sisters, so.
Jordyn: We're all girls, so we all kind of... maybe do that anyways They finish it. They finished the bikes. and then they're driving to this other secret spot to ride the bikes and this is the first time we see uh the pack well we don't know they're the pack but we see the pack cliff jumping.
Jordyn: And Bella at first thinks that they're committing suicide by jumping off the cliff. And Jacob has to explain that it's recreational. It's fun for them. This is where we.
Chris: recreational suicide
Jordyn: yeah basically and so this is where we kind of get to know in the book especially Jacob talks a little bit more about Sam and his gang and you know how uh Embry was his friend and then Embry started hanging out he disappeared from school for a little bit and then he comes back and he's obsessed with Sam and his gang and so they they decided like we hate Sam like Sam Uly is the worst and you know his gang are super lame and terrible and we don't like them
Jordyn: And we established, like, the pattern which leads to people being in the gang. So then when. It happens to Jacob. it's easier for her to figure out what's going on.
Jordyn: But they go to ride the motorcycles. And. I didn't realize this till I was watching it, but she goes on this whole monologue about how like, you know, for Charlie as a small town cop, there's not a lot of things to deal with other than traffic accidents. And especially where they live, there's not a lot of people on the road, but it's winding roads through the mountains.
Jordyn: and the forest and it's slick all the time with rain and so most of the accidents he has to deal with are motorcycles. motorcycle accidents and he sees people. you know splattered all over the road and like that Charlie would be so freaked out like he would be so angry if we knew if he knew we were doing motorcycles And then she still doesn't put on a helmet.
Chris: Yeah, that bugged me. I was like, why are we not wearing a helmet?
Jordyn: Like, you should be wearing a helmet, period. But then, especially after you go on this whole thing about how traumatic it has been for your dad to see these motorcycle accidents, and then you still don't wear a helmet?
Jordyn: Like, come on, girl.
Chris: and immediately get a head injury.
Jordyn: and immediately get a head injury.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: She's not thinking about other people besides herself right now. She's only thinking about Edward and getting Edward, whether it's her hallucination or whether he's going to come save her.
Jordyn: Yes.
Jordyn: Yes. For sure. Sigh. teenage girl. Peace. Stupid.
Chris: I also kind of don't think this is consistent with Edwards behavior of like, you know, I still feel like he would have been just. uh in the shadows watching her through all this and actually stopping her from doing things Which is what she hoped the whole time.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: And that is more consistent with what he would have done.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: He probably had to get away because i don't think he could have stayed away from her if he was in the same town so he's probably on the other side of the world right now
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: And that's what they said later that he was in like South America or something away from her.
Jordyn: The... Yep.
Chris: But I just don't see that being consistent with what he would actually do himself being, you know, the being the creep that likes to watch her.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well he thinks he's helping her.
Chris: So, you know.
Jordyn: Yeah, but you're right, SD. He thinks... He thinks leaving is...
Jordyn: helping her but he has to go he does like we see when he answers the phone in the movie later he's actively in Brazil he's in Rio de Janeiro you see this the the Christ statue out the window behind him like so he does he literally has to move continents and be that far away from her to keep himself from interfering with her life versus the rest of them are like, we're just going to go to Alaska with our cousins or I think they go to New York and Carlisle starts working.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: teaching and at Cornell or something like Heh. A little tough to read about Cornell right now.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I know.
Jordyn: I was like, oh. Tough choice.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: it was triggering when you said that i'm like oh let's not talk about that
Jordyn: Yeah. Tough choice. But. Yeah, so he, yeah, Edward. It wouldn't have surprised me if Edward had stayed anywhere.
Jordyn: within the continental united states that he would have been coming back periodically to check up on her and if he had seen her doing something reckless like this i think i don't think he would have been able to stop himself from interfering and like yelling at her for being stupid
Jordyn: So yeah, so Bella gets hurt. Riding bikes. They decide to not ride the bikes anymore, but her goal is accomplished. She does hallucinate Edward's voice again. She does get to have that.
Jordyn: that going for her. Now that... Jacob has helped heal her. She is speaking to her friends at school again. In the movie, they continue to lay some groundwork about hikers going missing and bear sightings and bear attacks in the area.
Jordyn: And then Mike Newton. is very annoying to me. Basically, he's annoying to me because he's not Edward or Jacob. But he is obsessed with Bella still, and he asks her out. And she's like, oh, yeah. Let's go as a group. Does everybody sitting here want to go? And then also I'm going to invite Jacob and Quill.
Jordyn: From. from the tribe and have them come too. And wouldn't you know, everybody ends up either bailing or getting sick. And so we get. the worst.
Jordyn: worst, worst. combo of Mike. Jacob and Bella. And again, very true to the book, very spot on with the dialogue and like the way the scene unfolds is both of the guys sitting there with their hands on their armrest, palm up, waiting for Bella to hold their hand while they're watching this scary movie. And her being like.
Jordyn: desperately uncomfortable and just sitting with her arms crossed the entire time and to not touch either one of them. And then Mike. catching the flu slash being a wimp and going and leaving the movie early to go vomit in the bathroom Jake being mean to him. Bella setting a very clear boundary with Jake that I don't love you the way that you want me to love you. but I can't live without you, trying to explain her feelings to him.
Jordyn: In the book, I think he takes it. better than the movie. In the sense that he's like, yeah, I respect that. Like, I'll just wait. Verses in the...
Jordyn: In the movie, it's a... Not as. laid back and patient. It's a little bit more like. well why not why can't you like you know what what can i do kind of it feels a little bit more pushy in the movie
Sarah-Daye McDougall: In the book. uh because i hadn't gotten to this part yet Is. Is the part where he gets mad at Mike. Is it as fast as it is in the movie?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Because I feel – okay, so then I feel like the movie's –
Jordyn: He doesn't get mad at Mike at all. He's
Chris: happen he drops them off and yeah
Jordyn: He - yeah he doesn't get mad at mike at all
Sarah-Daye McDougall: okay so then i feel like they're just kind of combining all of this because they're they're foreshadowing in the movie his transformation like he's starting to get that anger and that heat and so i think his reaction to her saying this is also just part of that like
Jordyn: Mm hmm. Yes.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Not being able to control the emotions.
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: they accelerated some of that yeah
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah. I do not disagree with that at all. I just. Because I think of everything of like, you know. what message is it sending to the audience? And so I think like having him. react in a healthy way to the rejection.
Jordyn: is important for people. for young people to read. And so then when he does get kind of angry and territorial in the movie, like I think that is the wrong message, but within like reframing it that way, it makes a lot of sense. And I feel better about it now that you've.
Jordyn: pointed out that it's like it's Probably because he's... about to transform into a wolf for the first time like you're so right
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: But the movie could have taken a whole different turn if they just went for a Why Choose novel at that point, you know, and just held both of his hands and, you know.
Jordyn: I don't think LDS Stephanie Meyer is going to give us that.
Chris: moved on. Yeah.
Chris: My God.
Jordyn: Respectfully.
Chris: Of course not. But it was there.
Jordyn: But I guarantee you that that has been written on AO3 or Wattpad 100%.
Chris: The story's there. It's been turned in.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: Yep.
Jordyn: Yeah, so then the Take my comb. And Jacob now says that he starts to not feel well. So there is the context of a stomach virus going around Forks High School. So that's why some of their friends couldn't come is because they got the stomach bug. Now Mike has a stomach bug.
Jordyn: book. Jacob starts to say that he doesn't feel so good. So he takes himself home and then Bella immediately gets the stomach flu as soon as she gets home. So.
Jordyn: you know When she doesn't hear from Jacob for a while, she's like, oh, he must be sick to the way that I'm sick. And so it's not that big of a deal. But then she gets better and she starts to call constantly. And Billy's like, he's fine. He's fine. Now he's got mono.
Jordyn: it's not a you know you can't come visit all these things and so she finally after like a week her own suffering is too much for her to bear. She has to see Jacob. So she goes down there and catches him. being out and about and not.
Jordyn: Sick with mono.
Jordyn: And so then they have their confrontation in the rain. And I'm not good for you, Bella. It's not you. It's me. that whole thing which As cringy as it is, is again. pretty much spot on with how it happens in the book, you know.
Jordyn: Very much word for word. Yeah, I'll pause there.
Jordyn: Any thoughts?
Jordyn: So in the book. She and Jacob have finished the bikes. And they start a new project together of trying to find the meadow where she saw Edward for the first time. She's still trying to figure out exactly what triggers the hallucinations. Is it? places that remind places and things that remind her of edward is it just the adrenaline
Jordyn: She thinks that maybe she'll have a good hallucination in the meadow since she has such a strong memory of Edward attached there. So in the book, she gets Jacob to help her like set out a grid and try to find it.
Jordyn: In the movie, she just goes off on her own. She's upset that Jacob is being mean to her and got roped into Sam's gang. And so she just goes on her own. to the meadow and finds it and it's out of season for wildflowers so it's just grass and it's very depressing and then She is confronted by Laurent. Laurent is back.
Jordyn: And he explains, yep. I'm just here to see if the Cullens are around because Victoria wants to kill you. But actually, I'm going to kill you because you're so delicious. And so I'm going to spare you the pain and torture that Victoria was going to give you. I'm just going to kill you real quick.
Jordyn: Drink your blood. I'm going to move on. You'll be dead, but I'm going to move on.
Chris: You're welcome.
Jordyn: All right. Yeah, and he genuinely is like, no, no, no, I'm doing you a favor. She wants to make this very painful and difficult for you. I'll make it so quick you won't feel a thing. It's fine.
Jordyn: She does get an Edward hallucination during this exchange. He's trying to guide her through this. hallucination edward somehow is like sentient enough to give her good advice of like how to what to say and how you know lie lie better beg for your life you know Whatever.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Well, and I think it's really her subconscious. She's giving herself the good advice.
Jordyn: Yes. Oh yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: It's just she thinks it's Edward giving it to her, but that's all coming from inside her.
Jordyn: Yeah. Absolutely.
Chris: It's actually a demon. There are other characters in this story.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: There's a demon or a ghost or something that's now infecting. In her body. she's not really hallucinating I'm going to figure out a way to make this story make sense.
Jordyn: Okay.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I really like this whole scene. I liked I like him as an actor. But then I liked how it the progression of this scene and how The fear. you know, she got more and more fearful and then.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: He was going to attack and the wolf showed up. And this is like our introduction. Of. I think this is the first time we've seen the full CGI woof.
Jordyn: This is the first time we see the wolves.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: and it Yeah.
Jordyn: Yes
Sarah-Daye McDougall: yeah so I like so this introduction of the wolves and then she goes running back to Charlie and like they're not bears they're they're wolves they're just giant wolves So I just thought, you know, I'm a sucker for slow motion. Anytime there's slow motion in a movie, I love it. I don't know what it is about it, but I love slow motion. So like there's so much. And then I think.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: in twilight they do they speed up a lot and then they slow -mo because i'm sorry
Chris: Her running towards Edward in slow motion made me so mad. Her running towards Edward in Italy towards the end made me so mad the way they did that, all slow motion.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Oh, God, no. I mean, there's definitely bad slow motion. There's definitely bad slow motion. This scene, though, is not. one of them but i think twilight in the series they also go back and forth between like speeding up and slowing down like slow motion because vampires are fast But this just I liked everything about this scene for like, Whatever. was you know i just thought that it was a really well done scene
Jordyn: And... we're going to keep repeating ourselves but very very very accurate to Howl the book. describes it going down and even to the point where she's kind of happy to see Laurent at first because he's you know he's proof that the vampires were real that everything that happened was real and so she's like Excited to see him. for a second And then she's like...
Chris: And he was supposedly changing his ways. He was going to take on their diet and he was starting to do better.
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: So the fact that he was there wasn't a threat right away.
Jordyn: yes yeah but then he's like yeah it wasn't really for me and now i'm going to kill you But yeah, so yeah, we see the wolves for the first time.
Jordyn: My notes as I was watching the movies, La 'Ron is back. Wolves! Loran is dead. Because they like immediately, obviously they, the wolves, it's explained later, but I'll explain it here. The wolves don't.
Jordyn: The Quillette Tribe. The legends are true. They are. men who can turn into wolves and back and forth but they that like X gene for lack of a better phrase is only activated when there are threatening vampires in the area so you know the Cullens were here and not a lot was going on but all of a sudden Victoria and James and Laurent show up and now Sam is turning into a wolf he's the first one and then They, you know...
Jordyn: Victoria is still around. She's still trying to get to Bella in revenge for Edward having killed James. And so now more of the wolves are popping up because I need to protect. the people there first of all the rest of the tribe on the reservation but then also the surrounding area from this threat so that's what triggers all of these guys to start turning into werewolves
Chris: Well, and I thought it was the colons that were triggering it somewhat, too, because they just moved back into the area. not long before this they they move around a lot and so the fact that they are back in forks is why the wolves are starting to come back again at least that's how it seemed like to me
Jordyn: That's true. I'd have to go back and double check when Sam turns for the first time and like kind of do that math. But I thought. they were I feel like it said that Sam first turned like a year prior, which would have been. well after the Cullens had gotten.
Jordyn: back to the area.
Chris: Maybe that's just how it was
Jordyn: So there's not really a need for the wolves to be around because they have the treaty.
Chris: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: That was my understanding.
Jordyn: Yeah. But, I mean... Even if the Cullens do trigger the wolves, you know. Okay.
Chris: Because that's what who Jacob blames the whole time is, you know, this is all your the the Collins faults and stuff like that.
Jordyn: That's true. i think Well, that...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think he's just mad because it's Edward.
Jordyn: is...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like he's putting too much blame.
Jordyn: Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: In the, like the relationship status.
Chris: Somewhat yes, I see that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yeah. It definitely could be because of the Cullens, but I think he specifically is always going to blame them because he really just wants to blame Edward because he's jealous of Edward because he loves Bella.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I think it's.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I'm doing a quick Google Shirts. Let's see what they say.
Jordyn: Uh... Anywho, so that all happens. like you said she goes back to charlie and is like Keep in mind, in the book at least, Charlie has told her multiple times. There's.
Jordyn: Some giant animal, a bear. out in the woods do not go in the woods don't go in the woods she obviously does whatever she wants regardless of her safety and how it will impact the people around her He goes anyways. And so then he's all pissed. What the heck were you doing out in the woods?
Jordyn: But she says like they're wolves, not bears. I saw them. There's like five of them. Charlie gathers a hunting party. They go out and start looking for the wolves. And she has...
Jordyn: And then later that night, Bella or Jacob. breaks into her window, Edward style.
Jordyn: And. is you know they have the conversation where he's like you know you already know like I already told you you know I can't tell you but like remember that day on the beach like I told you the story she's like yeah the story about the cold ones and then that pisses him off because she's like of course you remember that part of it and not you know not anything else
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Just remember. mm -hmm
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm
Chris: I'm a vampire girl, man
Jordyn: Literally. but she bella has like crazy vivid dreams in twilight and a new moon and so this The dream this night basically reveals to her like, oh, if the vampire part of the story is true, the werewolf part of the story must also be true.
Jordyn: that's why there's now wolves in this area gigantic supernaturally large wolves and also the gang is actually a pack she puts it all together
Jordyn: And then she goes down to LaPush to talk to Jacob because her immediate thought. which And Jacob's like to... be on Team Jacob yet again.
Jordyn: She is super hypocritical to automatically assume that the wolves are the ones killing all the hikers and like causing all these problems instead of. you know victoria or another vampire doing it like is crazy work for her to automatically assume that Jacob and his pack are murderers.
Chris: Well... I mean, that comes from her perspective of thinking that the bears are hurting people, which is what they assume was the wolves.
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: So I think that's kind of a logical conclusion. back when the vampires first showed up the bad vampires in the first movie you were hearing about these animal attacks still and it wasn't without the bear sight so she should have at least had some thoughts that go through her head of like, oh, I wonder if this is one of the other things that's hurting people around here.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: But I think she does. made those connections between what her dad was dealing with and the fact that it She saw the wolves.
Jordyn: yeah well and like Her preference for vampires like she is gonna assume that vampires are good until proven otherwise, but then like And Jacob makes more like, we're not the right type of monster.
Chris: Everything. proves it otherwise.
Jordyn: So because they're not vampires, she's going to assume that they're bad first. until proven otherwise. Which is crazy crazy work of her, but whatever.
Chris: And everything in this movie, other than the colons, proves otherwise that vampires are not the good guys.
Jordyn: Right. Right.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: The Google machine did. say that Sam turned because of the Cullens.
Jordyn: Okay.
Chris: What I read, too, is that it was like, right, Cullen's moved into town in 2003. He turns just before Bella comes into town. uh in 2005 just before like right before the events of the first movie
Jordyn: Okay.
Jordyn: Okay, so it wasn't an immediate thing. It takes some time.
Chris: Right.
Jordyn: Okay. Got it. it. Alright. So Bella, again, Bella assumes that. the wolves are the ones hurting people she has this whole debate of like well if Charlie's going out into the woods hunting the wolves I have to warn Jacob so that he doesn't get hurt but also he's a murderer and that's bad and so I shouldn't
Jordyn: you know he needs they need he and the rest of them need to be stopped so she's having this whole dilemma she decides you know if it was anybody but Jacob I would just let him die but I can't let Jacob die I need him so she goes to try to warn Jacob and so the The fight that Jacob has with Paul to defend Bella does happen, but the way we get there is a little bit different.
Jordyn: in the book She goes there, walks into Jacob's room. He's asleep. So she's like, okay, I'll let him sleep. She just hangs out with Billy for a little bit, goes to the beach. Jacob comes and finds her. She is able to give all this intel on the vampires, specifically why Victoria is in the area, why she won't leave.
Jordyn: and what happened last spring. Jacob says okay we got to tell the pack so then he takes her to the pack meeting and that's when he and Paul get into it and they go off and fight versus in the movie she sees Jacob sleeping and then the boys are coming out of the woods to get Jacob and she goes out there Again, like a frigging idiot to go and confront werewolves and is like, what did you do to him?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.
Jordyn: I can't believe you did this. And so then they get pissed. And then Jacob has to do this epic phase on the fly in midair rescue to defend her.
Jordyn: which again, incredible VFX for 2009.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: No. Mm hmm.
Jordyn: And then they go off and fight. And then we go to. Emily's house.
Chris: This is the fur of a killer, Bella.
Jordyn: Literally.
Chris: So she's fine with the fact that Edward says he's a killer and she knows he's a murderer, but...
Jordyn: Literally.
Chris: the fact that she thinks the wolves are killing the people is less okay. which yeah is another monster bias of hers she's definitely
Jordyn: Yes.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: Got that. Vampire bias.
Jordyn: Yeah, for sure. So then... as Bella is the vampire girl, we go to meet Emily, the wolf girl, who is Sam's fiance. They don't... Spoilers for the future.
Jordyn: They don't discuss imprinting. In this. book or movie? But. That's. What? happened is Sam imprinted on Emily. And so even though he clawed her face and mauled her and has scarred her literally for life.
Jordyn: she like they're they're still engaged they're still going to get married they're still together
Chris: I was thinking that could have made a whole other point of view book you could have done here is you've got your story from the vampire girl's side. You could have done a book from the wolf girl's side. Tell her full story.
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Chris: Tell that. Dig deeper into that would have been kind of an interesting. secondary story they could have told here.
Jordyn: Well, because there's also a crazy love triangle with that, with Leah Clearwater, because Leah. and sam were together and then he imprinted on emily dumped leah to get with emily and like it's I don't I forget if they're like actually like cousins or related or something, because it's you know, it's a very small reservation, very small tribe. So but like everybody knows everybody. So it's a huge source of drama. within the Quillettes that
Jordyn: the that he did this but also it's like he imprinted he didn't really he doesn't have a choice it that's just the wolfy nature.
Chris: problematic in its own way but you know
Jordyn: And we'll get to that in Breaking Dawn. That's really where the imprinting comes in to be an issue. We'll get there when we get there. But yes, very problematic.
Jordyn: Yeah, so Jake and the pack are hunting Victoria actively. They've got their whole like perimeter mapped out. They're trying to keep. their reservation and the town of Forks safe.
Jordyn: I like the way the movie does this. So Harry Clearwater's heart attack and Bella Cliff jumping do happen at the same time. And I like how the movie added the extra layer of the pack hunting Victoria. all of those things happening at the same moment and so Bella you know is left alone. Because Jacob is out hunting Victoria, he can't spend every waking moment with her. So she is now alone by herself. She's like, well, if I can't have.
Jordyn: Edward and I can't have Jacob, then the least I can do is go and hallucinate Edward some more.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Hmm.
Jordyn: So let's go cliff jumping. so she does in the book she does try to find a lower cliff to jump off of and she can't find the trail because she's hopeless at navigating in the woods so she ends up at the top of the cliff the highest most dangerous point And she does get her hallucination.
Jordyn: At the same time, Charlie and Harry Clearwater and other people are out in the woods hunting the wolves because they think the wolves is what's killing the hikers. Victoria is hunting them. She gets like.
Jordyn: This far away from Charlie, Harry Clearwater raises his rifle to try to shoot her. She comes back and gets him. And then the wolves. Pyoom! come in and attack her. And Harry Clearwater, you know, a middle -aged man.
Jordyn: you know he's a portly gentleman he's in poor health already It had been noted in the book that he had. been in the hospital recently for heart issues.
Jordyn: has a heart attack, dies. Bella. Again not thinking about herself. Not thinking about like. more than one step ahead like oh yeah i want to jump off the cliff what about the water what about how cold it is what about the fact she acknowledges the fact that there's a storm coming in the waves you know creating this kind of rip current crashing against the cliffs
Chris: The storm.
Jordyn: What's going to happen if something goes wrong and there's nobody here? Nobody knows that I'm here. And there's nobody here to save me. What is going to happen to Charlie if I die? None of these thoughts happen.
Chris: The mermaids will save her.
Jordyn: Apparently.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: No.
Jordyn: The mer...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This is
Chris: If only.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Another scene that I really liked.
Chris: That's where she falls in love with the next monster.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: This is another scene that I really liked. In the film. of her underwater. with First thing. Edward.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And where they're just kind of like floating. Opposite directions. And then. I think. Edward like turns into Victoria or his his fogginess like disappears and you see victoria like swimming towards her.
Jordyn: It was Victoria first. She sees Victoria coming at her. She tries to back up, hits her head against the cliffs. And then as she's drowning or becoming unconscious and therefore drowning, she sees Edward.
Jordyn: And that's when that. happens.
Chris: In the book, it's described as just seeing like a red fire in the water, which is just her hair.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: yeah yeah yeah yeah which i think they did a good job of
Jordyn: Yes. Yeah. Mhm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Like. making that kind of like little flame with her hair in the water and anyway i just thought all of that was really shot well
Jordyn: Mhm.
Jordyn: Yes, yeah It's a really good interpretation of what's written.
Jordyn: Okay.
Jordyn: So, yeah, so Bella is a ding dong, jumps off the cliff. Jacob saves her. Takes her home. tells her what happened with Harry.
Jordyn: All of the pack and Charlie are at. are on the reservation at Harry's. house with his now widow and his kids and starting like funeral arrangements and all of that Jacob is taking Bella home.
Jordyn: and they get to Bella's house, and he's like, oh, my God, there's a vampire in there. We got to go. We got to get out of here. She recognizes the car and is like, oh, it's Carlisle's car. Carlisle is here. She goes inside. It's actually Alice.
Jordyn: Because Alice got a vision of Bella jumping off the cliff, thought she was going to kill herself or thought she was trying to kill herself.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: She's like, even if you were already dead, I, you know, I still wanted to be here for Charlie and see how I could help, whatever. But she's surprised that Bella's alive because she saw her jump, but she couldn't see anything after that. So that's when we puzzle. We figure out that Alice cannot see the wolves. The wolves are.
Jordyn: shielded from her visions she can't predict what they're going to do next so when Jacob is the one who saves Bella she can't see that because Jacob is blocking her vision of Bella uh which That's a surprise tool that will help us later.
Jordyn: Uh... So. They have the whole wolf vampire confrontation in the house. And again, we kind of talked about it earlier, but in the book. Alice spends the night. She has a conversation with Charlie in the kitchen while Bella's pretending to be asleep.
Jordyn: and charlie's able to tell her like how bad everything really has been for Bella, how she's been suffering since the Cullens left. But in the movie, we skip all that. the Everything is just.
Jordyn: very chaotic, very fast. Rosalie. Alice tells Carlisle, tells Rosalie. where Alice is going. Rosalie tells Edward that Bella killed herself. Edward calls the house.
Jordyn: And is like, can I speak to Charlie? And Jacob says he's at a funeral.
Chris: He's playing in the funeral.
Jordyn: hangs up. Yeah, he's planning the funeral. in the book because it's been stretched out. Charlie is actually at. harry's funeral instead of just planning it but still he's not here and it's because of a funeral And so.
Jordyn: Edward jumping. you know, a hop, skip and a jump to, to a conclusion decides, Oh, Bella must be dead.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: To conclusions.
Jordyn: That's where Charlie's at. So guess it's time for me to kill myself too. Because that's a healthy response. So. Bella gets mad at Jacob for...
Jordyn: She feels like he's purposely misleading. Edward he thought it was Carlisle in the book he thought like that Carlisle was calling But it was Edward. And so.
Jordyn: Now they have to race to Italy because Alice can see that Edward is going to the Volturi to try to convince them to kill him because he doesn't want to live. if vampires even live without.
Jordyn: Bella.
Jordyn: There's the whole thing they're going on the plane there They commit grand theft auto and steal a Porsche. to get to Italy, to Volterra.
Jordyn: Alice provides more.
Chris: That's what it does.
Jordyn: Okay. Alice provides more background and exposition on the Volturi, what they do, their rules. basically how Edward's going to have to make a scene to convince them to kill him.
Jordyn: Uh...
Jordyn: It's St. Marcus's Day, which is funny because St. Marcus is who the townspeople believe. got rid of the vampires in Volterra and it is actually Marcus of the Volturi, the vampire living.
Jordyn: in the city still, but it is. It is actually very safe because they live there full time forever. And so they have to keep a low profile.
Jordyn: So no vampires are allowed to do anything to the humans in Volterra so that they can keep the secret. So it is actually. he did kind of in a way protect everybody from vampires, even though he is one.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Alice's vision is correct. The Volturi do reject Edward's request to die. They are trying to convince him to join their coven. Aro likes to collect people or vampires with special abilities, so he would love to have Edward on the team. Edward's like...
Jordyn: know I'd literally rather die than do anything else at this point. Bella has to slow motion run across the courtyard to save Edward.
Jordyn: And then she does. And then both of them have this horrible trait of like not. thinking that they're in the moment that they're in. They're going unconscious and they're like, oh, I must be dead. This must be what heaven is like or I'm dreaming. It's like, no.
Jordyn: Wake up. Lock in. You're in a very serious situation right now. Pay attention.
Chris: the... The fact that she ran all the way across when... obviously apparently his hearing is good enough to you know hear her most of the time anywhere in town or, you know, she, he's They've got like this super. uh human hearing Why not just yell, Edward?
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: I'm still alive.
Jordyn: Was she? She does. She does in the book yell at him, but then she says it's too loud. There's too many people he wouldn't be able to decipher. her voice specifically which i'm like that sounds like
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Because he's not looking for it.
Chris: I don't think he loves her that much then. Yeah.
Jordyn: Right. He also, you know, that's what Alice says, too, is like he's so convinced that Bella is dead. Like Alice can't go and try to convince him because she would be screaming her thoughts at him. She's alive. She's alive.
Jordyn: to prevent Edward from killing himself and Edward is like they just don't want me to kill myself so I don't I'm not going to believe that.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: He's like willfully ignoring. the facts and you know what people are telling him and so even when in the book as well even when bella gets to him and is hugging him he's like oh this must be Carlisle was right.
Jordyn: Like we do get to go to heaven because.
Jordyn: heaven is here where Bella is here and I can I can smell her I can feel her like they're so quick about it I must already be dead like that's crazy that they got to me so fast
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And as cheesy as this whole scene is...
Chris: Nope, Bella just went to hell as well.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: As cheesy as this whole scene is. I do like. uh Pattinson's acting here when she finally gets to him and is hugging him and you can see him It hasn't processed yet, but you can see his face like lighten up. Like he can smell her. He can feel her. he's relieved, happy.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: that like she's with him like you said like is this heaven that he could be with her again but then he realizes, like, she is actually here and not dead and like the just the facial expressions that he's doing in that scene is really good. And that's why we have the patents and that we have today.
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: Yeah. all of that
Jordyn: And then we, so now we get to meet the Volturi. Edward did not break any rules. He did not get to make a scene of himself. Bella did get to him in time, but the Volturi now still want to speak to him and Bella and Alice shows up.
Jordyn: We get to learn about Aro's gifts and in the movie. I don't think it's even in future movies, it's ever really talked about. But Marcus also has a gift. He can sense like the strength of people's relationships. And so.
Jordyn: Marcus. notices how strong the bond is between Bella and Edward, tells Aro. Edward reads Aro's thoughts. And explains to Bella. what is happening and you know Even Marcus can sense how.
Jordyn: tightly woven they are together. Aro's gift and Edward's gift are very similar. Edward can read any mind except for Bella's. Whatever thoughts are happening in that mind at that given moment.
Jordyn: RO can touch a person and see. here. absorb any thought that they've ever had in their entire life. So...
Jordyn: you know. If you really want a good therapist to understand what you've been through. go hit up RO. He'll get it. We learned that Bella is not just immune to Edward's mind reading. She's immune to Auro's and she's immune to Jane. Jane is able to.
Jordyn: make people feel pain. I think in an... in the next book she can make people feel other things too but the big one is pain but bella's immune to that so bella pretty much we learn is immune to Everybody's. Powers except for. Alice can see visions of her.
Jordyn: But any sort of power trying to control or manipulate or understand Bella, she's immune to.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: In the last episode, you guys said that.
Chris: Except for Jasper.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, he affected her too.
Jordyn: And Jasper as well, yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And I think that we came to the conclusion that if it has to affect her mind.
Jordyn: Yes.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: it she can shield it but if it effects like her surroundings or like body it doesn't affect it and that's why Jasper can kind of control the emotions because it's not necessarily
Jordyn: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: getting in our mind and like maybe with the pain it's like she's just like the christianity's curse like it's just in your head like you're feeling that pain
Jordyn: Yeah. It's an illusion of pain, not a physical.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: Like, cause she's not actually touching your body. Yeah. So it's like. giving you the illusion of feeling pain. So yeah, she's immune. It's not ever.
Chris: Or Stephanie Meyer didn't think of it early enough.
Jordyn: Yeah, it's just not super duper clear. There's not like a strict. line of what she's immune to and what she's not. So yeah, it being things that impact her mind and thoughts is. best we've got at this point.
Jordyn: The biggest difference between the book and the movie overall is this scene in the Volturi. The whole fight that happens with Felix and Dimitri and Edward does not happen in the book. They get out with no fighting whatsoever.
Jordyn: All the conversations about Bella turning into a vampire. And the future do still happen because Aro is, you know, threatening to kill her because she knows the secret.
Jordyn: and then that's where alice has to step in and say like well she is going to become a vampire at some point so like you don't actually have to do that But. I think the fight is freaking sick.
Jordyn: And. Edward gets mogged. He loses. But... And which leads to like. Bella like no please like freaking out that he's gonna get killed and so she's like no kill me kill me instead And.
Chris: So then Edward would just kill himself again?
Jordyn: RO finds... Right. So you're not actually going to accomplish anything that way, but okay. But Auro finds this very fascinating that Bella would give up her life for a vampire's life. And there's a lot of discussion about, like, the...
Jordyn: they're souls right and so like if you don't have if you're a vampire do you have a soul and then if you do not have a soul are you really alive or you're just existing all of that so aro finds it very interesting that bella's willing to sacrifice herself and then that's where Alice kind of steps in and is like,
Jordyn: Nobody move, nobody panic. Nobody needs to get hurt. She's going to become a vampire in the future. I've seen it. It's okay. Like, let's just. let's just get out of here and aro is very interested in what Bella is going to be like as a vampire. So he decides to let them go.
Jordyn: even against the advice of Jamie Campbell Bauer and
Sarah-Daye McDougall: hmm
Jordyn: uh who's caius and marcus they both are like let's just kill her now and get it over with But Aro says no.
Jordyn: They leave. We have the scene of the. Heidi. I didn't write down the actress's name, but another one of the Volturi vampires bringing in the herd of humans.
Jordyn: for lunch. There is a conversation of the human secretary. She does know exactly what's going on. She's hoping that she will get turned into a vampire at some point in the future.
Jordyn: Bella finds this very disturbing even though she literally wants the exact same thing.
Chris: is the same. person.
Jordyn: I think. Ultimately, it's because like the Volturi eat. human like drink human blood and versus the Cullens don't, but still it's like.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: If you had met another vampire first and that vampire drank human blood and was also obsessed with you in the way Edward is, I feel like you would. be fine with it like you're fine with so many other unethical things I feel like for that to be your line is a little I don't buy it.
Jordyn: But they return. Charlie hates Edward now. He thinks that all of the problems with Bella are Edward's fault, which they are. Her depression, her...
Chris: He's not wrong.
Jordyn: Her up and leaving last year to go to Phoenix, her up and leaving this year to go to Italy, even though she was only gone three days, she came back unharmed. Like all of these things that are weird for her to be doing.
Jordyn: are all Edward's fault. And so Charlie has decided that he hates Edward and Edward is only allowed to the house for supervised visits because Bella's super grounded. And then they...
Jordyn: Bella and Edward basically are negotiating like, well, we have to turn me into a vampire now because we told the Volturi we were going to. And Edward's like, no, we don't like I can just go and hide you because you're immune to their super tracker. And it's like.
Jordyn: That's only going to work for so long because she's also going to get old and this and that. And so she puts it to a vote for the Cullen. She's like, this is about your guys' safety as well. The Volturi are never going to leave us alone until I become a vampire or I'm dead.
Jordyn: So, you know, what do you guys want to have to every however many years deal with the Volturi coming and what that could look like? Or do you want to just turn me into a vampire and then we can all just chill?
Jordyn: They vote. And everybody pretty much votes for. Bella to be turned. except for edward obviously and rosalie which is very interesting It was Rosalie.
Jordyn: And she explains it, and it's the exact same explanation. She's like, this is not the life I would have chosen for myself, and I wish there had been someone to vote no for me.
Jordyn: which is
Chris: That felt sweet, actually, and was kind of a, oh.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: Yes.
Chris: Okay. I get it.
Jordyn: Yeah. And Rosalie's backstory. I think we get it in Eclipse. Her backstory is very traumatic, very, very hard to. hear about.
Jordyn: But very fascinating that while Edward and Carlisle are having all these discussions about damnation and their souls and this and that, Rosalie is just like... If I had been given the choice, I wouldn't have chosen this. I would have rather just been left to die.
Jordyn: you know, naturally And so because that's how I feel, I... don't want that for you either bella even though bella actively does want to become a vampire So that's the beginning of Rosalie's. redemption. arc basically.
Jordyn: And so then like more negotiating is happening. So Carlisle says that he will do it. He's the only one, again, strong enough to bite her, transform her without killing her. Even Edward is concerned that he might not be strong enough to do it.
Jordyn: Bella's like, can we just... go out back and do it right now. They're like. No.
Chris: Take me behind the woodshed.
Jordyn: Like, what about... Yeah, and they're like, no, what about Charlie? What about your Renee, your mom? Hey, remember your mom? Like, they're like, no, there's some logistics that need to be worked out first, you know.
Jordyn: but Carlisle agrees to turn her after. she graduates from high school so that's a couple of months from now at this point we're we're into February we've passed Valentine's Day because Jacob tries to give her a gift and she's like Please don't do that. It's Valentine's Day. Like, that's a lot.
Jordyn: So we're sometime in March, April, I think. So it's a couple of months until graduation and then Carlisle will turn her. So then Edward is like.
Jordyn: Whoa. don't you want me to do it she's like well of course he's like okay then Mic drop. Marry me. marry me first bella and then we and she's like no we can't get married i'm 18.
Jordyn: And he's like. That's the point like Yeah.
Jordyn: If you're not ready, he's like, are you scared of the commitment? And she's like, no, but I'm 18. It's like. OK, so if you're not basically if you're not old enough to get married, then you're not old enough to be a vampire. And she's like, well, you're 17. And it's a whole.
Jordyn: The only way you can really understand Her logic is if you're a teenager. the only way and his logic again Stephanie Meyer being LDS. They tend to marry very young.
Jordyn: So that makes sense that he would set that particular condition of let's get married before we... go further in our in our relationship.
Chris: I feel like Edwards. view of the world is kind of stuck at 17 year old boy too even though he's had all this life experience i feel like he is portrayed as someone who never matured never grew the full frontal cortex to actually make good decisions.
Chris: And so that's how this whole story feels all the time is he's just a petulant teenager as well that cannot make good decisions.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Jordyn: Yes. Well, because it's talked about later in later books, but basically the... The venom freezes your body where it's at. So that would include the development of one's brain. we can presume. So if you're turned to a vampire at 17, yes, I... From what I understand, yes, you are constantly stuck at a half form prefrontal cortex. And so your brain is just never, you're just.
Jordyn: Never going to be at your full brain potential.
Chris: I definitely feel like I'd rather be turned a vampire in my 30s than in my teens. That would have not been where I would have wanted to have been frozen.
Jordyn: Yeah. did that oh no well because like you can't do anything you can't like rent a car you have to use your like supernatural like wiles and flirtiness to convince people to let you do things like you can't do a lot of things on your own so like yeah like late 20s early 30s would probably be the ideal age You're muted, SD.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah, I was going to say like 25 would be a good age.
Chris: well I mean also in your 30s Yeah.
Jordyn: As soon as my brain is developed and I can do, and there's no like. laws prohibiting me from doing Most. things that are not like crimes.
Jordyn: Yeah, that would be the good time.
Chris: in your 30s you can look you know you can look young and still be older you can be older and still look younger you know all of that kind of feels like you could be you could fit into that for a lot longer of like oh yeah i just have good genes i'm i've stayed you know looking in my 30s in my life but
Jordyn: Right.
Jordyn: Yes.
Jordyn: Yeah.
Chris: in your 20s you're like why are you still a teenager or whatever you know
Jordyn: Well, and then you're also not stuck Well, then you're also not stuck forced to repeat high school forever.
Chris: Right.
Jordyn: Like if you're an adult, like you can just do other jobs and you can be a vampire and float around and do whatever you want.
Chris: Right.
Jordyn: You don't have to just repeat high school eternally. Like that sounds. like the worst. Like, I don't know. And I understand like she. Edward's 17, so she doesn't want to be too much older than him. I understand that.
Jordyn: to a point Why would anybody want to repeat high school forever? I don't get that part. And I had a good high school experience. I liked high school. If I could, you know, relive it for a day or two, I would. But like forever?
Jordyn: It... Constantly? No sir, no ma 'am. No thank you.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: I agree. I don't want to
Chris: A little off topic, but I was just reading a fan theory about like I meant I just had joked about mermaids, but apparently there's a theory amongst Twilight fans that the vampires of this world.
Chris: might be the van the mermaids of this world because uh you
Chris: don't have to breathe so like you know edward swam to france so why not have you know you don't the light can't get to you under the water so why wouldn't there be vampires living under the water
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Right.
Jordyn: Yeah. That's really possible.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And they lure.
Jordyn: And Jacob talks about...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: sailors into the depths of the sea.
Jordyn: Mm -hmm.
Chris: yeah exactly the siren aspect that yeah so i was like huh that's actually an interesting theory
Jordyn: Mm hmm.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yep.
Jordyn: Yeah. Absolutely. And Jacob mentions it too, because they can't, they don't need, vampires don't need to breathe. They, you know. they don't they're not affected by the weather or the cold right you know and they're incredibly strong and fast like they could live off sharks you know it's not human blood but like the cullens have proven you can live off
Chris: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: animal blood and maintain your strength, right? Because R .O. thought that Carlisle would die living off of non -human blood. Because it's not. it's not human blood. So he's.
Jordyn: has proven that you can do that so you could live off of whales and sharks in the ocean forever and not ever be bothered. That's totally possible. Very valid theory. The one other scene that I skipped over.
Jordyn: In order to get to Edward's marriage proposal is Jacob. The first time that we actually see all three of them together in one spot, Jacob comes over.
Jordyn: And he wants to remind Edward. slash inform Bella of a key point of the treaty. which is that if any Cullen bites a human, not even kills a human.
Jordyn: bites a human. The treaty is void and the werewolves can attack. Okay. And so that's basically this is the entirety of Eclipse and Breaking Dawns.
Jordyn: conflict between them as Bella very much wants to be a vampire. Jacob very much does not. Jacob's willing to attack the Cullens if she goes through with it. Edward also doesn't want her to be a vampire but you know is willing to do whatever she wants to make her happy.
Jordyn: It's a whole thing. More teenage drama. And yeah. So they get... they get that in the book it happens like right in front of their house and so charlie you know because he hates edward is screaming at bella to get in the house or she'll just never i'm never gonna let you see edward again type deal versus this happens randomly in the middle of the road jacob's standing there like shirtless, mogging them. come come into the woods we can chat
Jordyn: And then the movie ends with the epic mic drop of Marry Me Bella. And then she gasps and is like. horrified.
Chris: Also, why is Charlie telling his 18 -year -old daughter that he's going to ground her? She's an adult now.
Jordyn: She is.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: She's still in high school.
Jordyn: She is, but she's still in high school. She's still living under his roof. So it's like. And that's a very typical teenage parent. teenager slash parent battle is I'm 18 but you still live in my house for free and you're in high school so like We have to navigate some boundaries with each other here.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm hmm.
Jordyn: So, and she, you know, book Bella, again, there's always more exposition and explanation in books than in movies, but she. talks about like she feels really bad like He's literally at. one of his best friend's funeral and she dips to italy with no warning no nothing and yes again comes back three days Only three days, but still three days later. Totally unharmed.
Jordyn: But like.
Chris: Which is kind of a minor miracle in itself, her coming back totally unharmed.
Jordyn: Right. Right. So. You know. But she still understands that like that was. not cool to do and so she's like you can ground me obviously you can ground me as if she has a choice
Chris: Yeah.
Jordyn: you know she accepts the fact that she's grounded she's willing to follow the rules except for when he says edward has to be out of the house by 9 p .m and they say okay and then he climbs in the window two seconds later.
Jordyn: But whatever.
Chris: Teenagers.
Jordyn: Teenagers man.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: teenagers
Jordyn: And that's pretty much. Eh. that That's the story. Ultimately, my takeaway is that As... Not as a movie. As an adaptation of this book, It's 10 out of 10.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm
Jordyn: maybe like a 9 out of 10 because they you know they added the big the not the big they added the fight in the Volturi scene which doesn't exist some timey wimey stuff happens as usual but like this these are really good adaptations.
Jordyn: Like if you're going to score it of how well it does translating the text to film.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Mm -hmm.
Jordyn: It's 10 out of 10. for me.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah I agree.
Jordyn: Chris?
Chris: I'll concede that it's a decent adaptation, yes. A decent adaptation of a not so great book.
Jordyn: Decent.
Chris: Yes.
Jordyn: You know what I'll take it
Jordyn: And I still think as a movie, like... And maybe this is just me having not great taste, but as a movie, I still think it's like a six out of 10.
Chris: i like how it took us almost the same length as the movie to talk about the movie adaptation here
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah. I was looking at the time. I'm like, man, this is almost two hours.
Jordyn: It's my favorite one.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Chris: Alright, so expect a shorter episode next time for...
Sarah-Daye McDougall: Yeah.
Jordyn: Maybe.
Chris: uh eclipse
Jordyn: Well, it's a longer book and movie, so there might be
Chris: Maybe.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: And the last One is two movies, right?
Jordyn: Yes, it sure is.
Chris: Yeah.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: We have a lot of content coming up.
Jordyn: Yes. Well... Basically, the whole second movie doesn't actually happen in the book. or at least a good chunk of it. So. we'll just have that caveat and then we can.
Jordyn: talk about it or not talk about it as we wish but yes Alright.
Chris: Well, maybe if my baby comes, you guys can just talk about it and love on it instead of having my pessimistic perspective on Twilight.
Jordyn: That's it.
Sarah-Daye McDougall: All right.
Jordyn: Yay!
Jordyn: Yeah let's get the hater out of here.
Jordyn: Just kidding. All right. Well, that's it. That's all we've got for y 'all this week on Bookwatch. Be sure to check out last week's episode where we covered. Twilight, the movie and book one.
Jordyn: And next week, we'll be covering Eclipse. And be sure to tune in. And we'll see you next week.
Jordyn: Bye.
