loss of the season. and Along for the ride today, I'm delighted to be joined by Jack Ward. Hi, Jack.
00:00:43
Jack
Hi Jules, how are you mate?
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good. Happy to be here.
00:00:46
Jack
Good, good.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Lewis Royal. Hi, Lewis.
00:00:50
Lewis
Hi Jules mate, how's it going?
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good, good, good. Right, let's get into it then. So, City

Discussion on defensive mistakes and squad depth issues

lost 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday night, courtesy of two first-half strikes from Timo Werner and Pat Saar. Matthias Nunez's strike on the brink at half-time to make a 2-1 was unfortunately how the match ended. So, Jack, what do you think went wrong? How did City end up losing for the first time this year?
00:01:16
Jack
You know what, I've come away from that match thinking that we played an air. It was okay. It wasn't great. It wasn't our worst performance by any stretch. I feel like that game was decided in all honesty.
00:01:30
Jack
with a couple of defensive errors, you know, at the back, Rico Lewis maybe switching off and and and not tracking his man better. And for the second goal, just nobody closing down Papsar, allowing him a free shot. And and and I was questioning whether Ortega should have done better. I think it just come down to individual mistakes at the moment, which I can probably attribute to, you know, a thin out squad or a group of tired players who, you know, we're running on fumes at the moment. so It's not a worrying game for me. I went into that game thinking that we'd lose that game. The lineup suggested so as well. We lost the game, I've come away, nothing's changed. it's not It's not set off any alert stations for me, not nothing's panicking. It was just one of our yearly, let's face it, it was our yearly loss at the Spurs Stadium. So you know it's not he's not cause for concern for me.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it's ah five losses at that stadium in five years now, and I think it's six in eight. So yeah, absolutely crazy record. Probably the worst record city you've got anywhere and in Guardiola's reign.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So of all places to lose, and I agreed with you there. I thought that might have been it, and I did predict so as well.
00:02:39
Lewis
Thank you.
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Lewis, so Jack mentioned a thin squad. Was the selection incorrect with the players that were available?
00:02:48
Lewis
um Obviously, it's the Carabao club. It was expected from Pep. He doesn't rate this cup anymore. i mean We won it six times out of eight, I think. and But we've now been knocked out of the last four years.
00:03:00
Lewis
i mean the The laughs at the end from from the bench and Pep means signals to me that it doesn't mean too much. But it was nice to see Macatee start again. It was nice to see O'Reilly get his first start.
00:03:11
Lewis
However, I do feel that he's not up to the to the first team standard.
00:03:13
Jack
yeah
00:03:15
Lewis
at Well, the biggest one of the biggest clubs in the world. i mean passes going astray, just simple 10 yard passes out of play, you which I thought was, it was quite sloppy and just lack of concentration. I don't know whether it was nerves or whatever it was, but I do feel that we have got a thin squad and it is going to hurt us in these cup competitions, but hopefully we can just push on into the league and and push for another treble with the squad that we've got. I know Pep does like that, but yeah, it isn't going to is going to help us as much as it's going to help some other squads.
00:03:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, um it's a double-edged sword really, isn't it? Having a thin squad that keeps the players generally happier, but also there's a lot less of them. Jack, have you got anything to add there?
00:03:57
Jack
Yeah, I mean, I think we are a centre back and a goalkeeper, injury away from having a full injured starting 11. And you know, when all the other fans in the top six come to us and say that we've got, you know, two starting 11s that go on and win the Premier League, that's not the case anymore. It's not been the case for about four or five seasons now.
00:04:20
Jack
We've got this one of the thinnest squads in the league, and as is now with the injury crisis that we've got going on. But also before that, the last couple of seasons, we've used the least amount of players out of any team in the Premier League. So Pep Light's a thin squad. I've always agreed with him that it's better to have this thin squad. but It's one of them seasons, this is football, it happens and we're paying the price for that thing, the squad this season of all seasons. The fates are just a aligning in a way that we've got all these injuries happening. and It's unlucky, it's football, we get on with it, but at the moment we're struggling and that and that's the reason because of it.

Fan reactions and youth player performances

00:04:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
You both seem to have quite a level head. I have seen a lot of City takes that and maybe lost their head off the back of that result, though.
00:05:04
Jack
Greeting my son's fire.
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Well, not not just him, but you know I think whenever a team like City is so used to winning doesn't and loses, you know there's got to be questions asked.
00:05:06
Jack
ah one well what
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a lot has been made of the selection performance. ah and know with the result and the perfect vision of hindsight to go alongside it. But at least there was the positive of a whole host of academy players being involved, as you mentioned, Lewis. There's nothing new, seeing Rico and Phil starting, but and it was definitely novel for James Macatee and Nico O'Reilly to do so. So you mentioned Nico O'Reilly, Lewis. How do you think James Macatee got on?
00:05:45
Lewis
See I've said it before I'm a massive fan of him but I do feel that When he gets on the ball, it's it' exciting. He's close in troll. It does remind me of David Silva, like I said before, but I feel he doesn't get on it in enough. I don't think he wants the ball enough. Like I said with Nico O'Reilly, I don't know if it's a lack of confidence or what it is, but he should be confident. He's playing for for the best team in the world and Pep Guardiola's starting him. So I do really want to see him come out of his shell. Obviously Manchester born. I really want to see him flourish like light Phil has gone on and done. What do you have to add, Jack?
00:06:17
Jack
Well, I completely agree with you, to be honest with you. We all want him to do really well, but for me, um I don't know whether it's just me being really too critical of him, but I've seen him in glimpses. He's had great moments where Yeah, he gets on the ball. He's nice. He, you know, against Spurs the other weekend, he did a couple of nice little skills, get past the player winner, free kick route on the edge of the box. But at the moment, that's all there is to me. He's a moment player, these little bright sparks. When Phil was coming through, there was the odd game where he'd say, you keep out of the scruff of the neck, you know, in these cup games, and obviously it's
00:06:51
Lewis
Yeah.
00:06:51
Jack
It's a completely different situation because Phil may be taking those games when we were playing some of the lower division teams. Obviously, this is getting spurs at the top of the stadium, completely different ball game. But I'd like to see James Marchetti take a game by the scruff of his neck and control it and have a consistent good performance because at the moment, it's usually quite poor performances with glimpses and and moments and that's what i want to see from both james mcinty and nikco o' ryanley because but it comes to him i don't think he even considered the fact that you might be playing any minutes this season and let alone
00:07:24
Jack
what he's already played so far this season so i think it's coming a massive surprise to him in a massive shot but I do, I do see Nicole Riley as a, as a, there's a real talent quite there. There's a real player there. And you can see that poor when he drives with the performances with ball, it's almost like Roger, when, when he glimpses gets the ball and he wants to and moments. move it forward, he'll just take it. He's like, he glides across the pitch, but yeah, his decision making is not there at the moment that the loose balls, the straight passes. It's not there at the moment. If you can get that under, under control.
00:07:55
Jack
you know We're looking at a 19-year-old kid who's already like 6'2", 6'3", he's got a physicality already. There is potential in him and I want to see that from him. I'm giving him a bit more leniency and a bit more time because James Mackey has been around the squad for a number of years now. Obviously, he had a couple of loans as well so that's why I'm perhaps a little bit harsher on him but I want to see more from both of them.
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think it's the higher standards that we're comparing them to, you know, we're saying James McAteevey, we'd like him to be more like Phil Fodor and it doesn't really get like higher standard than that.
00:08:29
Jack
Yeah.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that is the level required to break into the city first team, you know, like the players you're up against and the trophies are competing for, you've got it you've got to do something. not you know I'm not saying that James McAteevey won't get there, but I totally agree with you.
00:08:39
Jack
yeah
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, you want to see him dominate a game as opposed to just have flashes of brilliance. Absolutely. There was another positive in my eyes and that would be um Mateus Nunez, the best left winger in in the Premier League at the moment.
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
He and got the, what turned out to be the consolation goal on the stroke of halftime, which is his second goal in three games to go along with the three assists as well. So it seems he solidified his position on the left wing, especially with all the injuries that we mentioned.

Squad impacts due to injuries and potential of academy players

00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Darko, Grealish, Oscar, Bob. Do you think he keeps his place this weekend, Lewis? And probably furthermore,
00:09:22
Lewis
Yeah, I think he does. I think he's shown he's shown great pace. he's He's a lot quicker than I did think he was. I know we've mentioned it in the in the previous episode on Monday, but I never knew he was that quick from watching him at Wolves, and he does excite me when he drives down the line. i mean He could have got another assist yesterday when he did drive in. I can't remember who it was back post, but he just narrowly missed the foot of whoever it was arriving late. And obviously he got his goal. It wasn't the easiest finish in the world. It was an open net, you could say, but I think he did take it well. It was bouncing. I mean, great play from Savino again with another assist, but yeah, Nunez is definitely, he's definitely improving. You can see he's becoming more confident the more starts he's given from Pep. And I can see, I can see fans getting behind him and and wanting him to do well in comparison to
00:10:06
Lewis
to last season when he maybe wasn't getting that opportunity or ah flourishing as much as he is now?
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, well, he's already, I think he had, did he have one city goal before this season? Now he's got two and three, two and three games.
00:10:18
Lewis
I think so.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's an improvement at least. And yeah, yeah definitely a shout out to Savino for what's seeming to be a little bit of a trademark move from him at the moment, the step over, drop the shoulder, go, go on the outside in his weak foot and clip the ball in.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he can, if he can strongly develop that going outside game, then we have another Riad Morris and Ahan surely. I just want to also mention and two other academy players that came on as well. Jacob Wright came on and he had quite a bit of an impact for me. I thought he was getting himself into some good positions. Nearly scored once as well, probably should have done better, but it was close. um And there was a there was a debut for, um let me just make sure I don't get the double ball surname wrong, Jamay Simpson-Poussey as well. um Yeah, always good to see academy players get i'm getting a debut.

Bournemouth's recent performance and potential threats

00:11:08
Lewis
say oh That is great.
00:11:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and what we
00:11:10
Lewis
you you've You've done really well with the pronunciation there.
00:11:13
Jack
I couldn't have done that.
00:11:13
Lewis
I'm really proud
00:11:14
Jack
I want to restock. yeah
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, one of us has to be one of us has to be mature. Yeah, don't we? Well, yeah, anyway, I'm saying congratulations to him for getting his debut. What are any thoughts on both of those who came off the bench, Jack?
00:11:30
Jack
um Yeah, well i I like Jacob Wright's performance and I'm always a big fan of of players when they get the chance you who were really positive coming on. That's what I loved so much about Micah Hamilton in his big part role this last season. Obviously he didn't play for the club anymore, but I'm always a big fan of players coming through. ah Okay, they get the chance, they're thinking, right, I'm going to do something and I'll make something happen and and not just kind of play it safe and risk it and say, oh, I don't want to upset.
00:11:57
Jack
pep i don't want to make any mistakes no go go and take your chance do something with it show us the talent that you are show us why that you're in the the city you know the project and and why you deserve to be starting in this team or at least getting some minutes so i was impressed with both of them and and and obviously massive congratulations to get their their debuts uh for them so yeah positive things to come um you can say that name again
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Congratulations to who for the debut?
00:12:23
Lewis
Haha.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jamal Simpson-Poussey, yeah, and his family with gas. I've seen it online as well. So that was lovely.
00:12:29
Jack
oh
00:12:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
have That'll do for part one. um And ah when we come back, we will talk all about City's fixture against Bournemouth as City try and get back on the winning horse.
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to Daily Manchester City on the Global Sports Podcast Network. ah Well, ah you two didn't seem too disheartened by the the loss in the caribou cap, probably because it is the caribou cap. There's a lot bigger fish to fry over the course of a very long season that involves European football too. But in football, there's always the immediate chance to get retribution for a loss and put things right. And that's exactly what City will aim to do against Bournemouth on Saturday. Antonia Riola's side are doing a difficult start to the season, just like last campaign where Gary O'Neill was controversially swapped for the Spanish gaffer.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But to believe it's more than fair to say the club have been on an upward trajectory since, both in plain style and quality. And that's proved to be the case recently for the Cherries too. Recently beating Arsenal 2-0 and getting a solid 1-1 draw away to Champions League top in Aston Villa. And that leaves Bournemouth in 11th, but just a point off Spurs in 8th. So, how difficult is this trip to the Vitality going to be for Sir Deja?
00:14:11
Jack
and Well, to be honest with you, Jules, there is so many places that I'd rather be going to in the Premier League than to the Vitality Stadium this weekend, just after a pretty devastating loss. Well, say devastating, it's not really devastating, but, you know, after a loss, I don't really want to be going to the Vitality Stadium because it's not an easy place to go to, like it or not. I mean, we're we're looking at the Premier League now. There's not really any of the easy games. We've seen in the past couple of seasons, the kind of golfing quality between the Premier League teams and the newly promoted sides.
00:14:40
Jack
and Bournemouth are one of the mainstays of the Premier League and they're tough to go to. you Obviously the Vitality Stadium is probably the smallest capacity stadium in the Premier League, I might be wrong in that but I think that's true. the The fans are so close to the pitch, it's a small pitch, it's not it's a bit of a cauldron, it's not a nice place to go to. as so big It's a big distance to travel to and that's not even mentioned in a football team.
00:15:07
Jack
Iraola has drilled in such quality into this Bournemouth player, ah this Bournemouth team, and they've got such nice players. They've got so many great players at their disposal and and a lot of players to worry about really. And they're not even doing that bad in the league this season. Three wins, three draws, three losses. That's put some level with Fulham and Newcastle right back in the middle of the table there. Obviously one point off Tottenham and Bremford.
00:15:31
Jack
they're they're not far off and they're doing quite well obviously they've had some big fixtures big wins obviously you mentioned against Arsenal that's what they can do to teams you know at home so it's not the nicest place to go to and I'm looking forward to it
00:15:38
Lewis
Mm.
00:15:47
Jack
I'm not too sure. I just hope that we can go ah go over there and and just get three points. That's all I'm hoping. and I don't care how pretty it is. I don't care how many glaring mistakes or problems there are. If we can go there and come back home with three points, that'd be a good daily office for me.
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who would you expect Pep to pick to get the team back to winning ways, Lewis?
00:16:09
Lewis
Well, I think it's going to be obviously, how I'm looking back in. I mean, I don't know what Savino injury. I don't know how bad the Savino injury is. Sorry.
00:16:17
Jack
It's one to two weeks ankle sprain, yeah.
00:16:20
Lewis
Is it? Okay. Yeah. It's like, it it's going to be another thin, thin squad situation. However, we have beaten him the last 15 out of 15 encounters.
00:16:31
Lewis
I'd like to say, oh, we'll bounce back after a loss and it, and we'll batter him. But. I can't say I'm that confident, like I do agree with Jack, it is a horrible place to go, especially after beating Arsenal. 2-0 there a couple of weeks ago, it's going to be difficult, but I do want to see us going at it, and I want to see us but score more goals against a team like Bournemouth, where they're a good squad on paper, but realistically we should, we really should be battering them.
00:17:00
Lewis
um I want to see more from Gundavan, for example. I still don't think his season's got started at all. I mean, last night against Spurs, I don't think he was in the game. I don't remember him doing anything so really significant.
00:17:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah it got hooked It got hooked a half time as well.
00:17:14
Lewis
I just think that, yeah, I just think that the senior players with the the thin squad that we do have need to take charge and need to step up obviously with

Speculation on City vs Bournemouth lineup and transfers

00:17:24
Lewis
the injuries we've got.
00:17:25
Lewis
they They should be the ones coming forward and pushing through. and getting us the three points which will be so important going to a place like Bournemouth where our arch rivals Arsenal have drop points.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and just to follow on from the stats you said there, so that's every Premier League game City and Bournemouth have ever played, ah City have won. in fact and In fact, City have never lost to Bournemouth ever.
00:17:46
Jack
I absolutely love that.
00:17:47
Lewis
yeah
00:17:51
Jack
Wow.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
19 wins out of 21 games and in the 14 games they've played in the Premier League, and City have won all of them, scored 45 and conceded 7.
00:18:04
Jack
All the only only City fans could be hearing that and still not be confident about a trip to the Vitality this weekend.
00:18:11
Lewis
son Yeah.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, they're definitely a better team than in a lot of those years, aren't they? But um I'm pretty sure City beat Bournemouth 6-1 last season as well. So if if there's any team to get back on the horse against, it would be one like this. But yeah, nothing ah nothing against the quality in the Bournemouth team. um How highly do you rate Iraola Lewis? And the ah Jack's spoken a little bit about being impressed with the style that they play. How highly do you rate the manager and the team?
00:18:40
Lewis
Yeah, I know. i do think I do think they are decent. I mean, I saw a few people before the season having him to go down, but I think a lot of the players have stepped up. Obviously, Evan Nilsson coming in, Semenyo on the left, I think three goals in an assist.
00:18:54
Lewis
It's something like that. I mean, Clyver as well, obviously son of, what's he called?
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big Pat, big Patrick.
00:19:03
Jack
ah
00:19:03
Lewis
Oh yeah, Patrick, that is it. Yeah, he slipped my mind. Yeah, I do think they are a danger, especially on the counter, they're very, very quick on the wings going forward, which is obviously a big weakness for us this season, just getting caught on the counter. So yeah, I have been impressed, but hopefully on the weekend, I'm not impressed and and we can get a job done, unlike obviously Arsenal did, just to rub it in even more.
00:19:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Lewis mentioned um how dangerous they are on the counter-attack. Do you think that would be key for Bournemouth? Where do you think this match will be when I lost Jack?
00:19:36
Jack
and I think it'll be one out wide, one all lost out wide. I'm not too sure whether he's out injured or if he's back fully fit, but obviously, a player that you're a big fan of, Jules, Milos Kirkez, down on the left-hand side. I think he's he's a real danger. On the other side, and a little bit further forward, obviously Tabernet.
00:19:54
Jack
they've got real threat out wide, you know, Lewis mentioned, uh, Clive hurt. So these players are kind of really stringing together. I think Enos Unal has played quite a bit for them in, in the past couple of games, as well as their new striker, Evan Nielsen. So they've got a lot of good attacking threats and options up front. Um, I mean, you know, how I feel about, um,
00:20:14
Jack
iraola I had him as my outside shell to replace Pep when we did that episode ah a few weeks ago, so I think he's that good. and I think this ball on the side are playing a lot better in some really nice football, so they're threats all over the pitch, but I think the more central they are, the less strong they are. I think that's fair to say that they' they've got a lot of their strength out wide.
00:20:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I do agree, but i so but I'm still a big fan of Lewis Cook, and I think and Ryan Christie being pushed from a pretty ineffective Premier League winger to a mainstay in that seed CDM or maybe eight box-to-box role.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've been very impressed with him, but yeah, they definitely have more than dangerous players that wide. Semenyo is electric, absolutely.
00:20:56
Jack
Oh, yeah I think I mentioned some men now.
00:20:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Clyvert had a really good season, I think, as well. he's ah He's been trusted a lot more this year, and I think he looks really good. And then, yeah, he got Marcus Tavernier as well.
00:21:06
Jack
This area as well.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I was just going to, yeah, and Sinisteri.
00:21:07
Jack
so yeah
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's had a few injury problems this year, but, yeah, he's a great player, I think. So they've definitely got options, and it's very hard to replace the goals and the the stature that Dominic Solanke has.
00:21:13
Jack
yeah
00:21:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Evan Eelson looks all right, and enus un Enis Unal could come along as well.
00:21:23
Jack
yeah
00:21:26
Jack
and forook ye
00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, exactly. I've mentioned a couple of players there. We all did. Is there anyone that you like the look of enough to maybe get them to come up ah to the Northwest, Jack?
00:21:38
Jack
um not Not really, I would say out of all their players, you just know that there's one player that's going to probably have the game of his life, not as cap-hour as Ippolaga.
00:21:49
Jack
He just always does against us. He always likes to turn up against us.

he might not play as he's been out he's been out the last two and Mark Travers has been amazing even though I i don't rate him the highest generally but um the last two games that he's played instead of Kappa he's been great so there could be a selection issue there but yeah Kappa does love to he loves to play the big games to be honest Kappa doesn't he he's just a drop
00:22:00
Jack
Yeah.
00:22:04
Jack
Yeah. Yeah.
00:22:12
Lewis
His distribution is terrible.
00:22:12
Jack
ye
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, he's a drama queen and don and I don't even rate him, but he does turn it on sometimes.
00:22:15
Lewis
He's so mad.
00:22:18
Jack
and
00:22:19
Lewis
and Yeah, I know he does. Someone i of so I'd i had actually have at City is Alex Scott. and I watched him.
00:22:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:29
Lewis
I've seen a few c clips of him at Bristol City two seasons ago, whenever it was. And I think he's someone that Pep would like.
00:22:33
Jack
Yeah. Was he injured?
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, he's not injured. He's just out of favour a little bit.
00:22:39
Jack
It wasn't me like million.
00:22:39
Lewis
Yeah.
00:22:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:42
Jack
Was he one player of the season? done and it was it Was it League One at the time?
00:22:45
Lewis
Yeah he did yeah.
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
but theres um
00:22:46
Lewis
I think at the end of 2022 he won't even play with his region.
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay
00:22:49
Jack
Yeah.
00:22:51
Lewis
Which is mental.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, is good and City could definitely do with another midfielder at this time to be honest.

Overview of rival Premier League fixtures

00:22:59
Jack
yeah
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that will that will do for um part two and when we come back we'll quickly look over at what some of City's rivals are going to be getting up to this weekend.
00:23:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So hopefully not too much time. Hello and welcome back to the Daily Manchester City Podcast and the Global Sports Podcast Network. We are doing a forecast Friday and we've looked at City's fixture against Bournemouth on Saturday, so now let's look ahead at what some of the other teams in the Premier League are up to.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there are some cracking games to get into which could have huge ramifications at both ends of the table. We'll start towards the top of it with the lunchtime kickoff, which Lewis will tell you to never back, am I right?
00:24:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
As Newcastle host as newcastle host Arsenal at 12.30 on Saturday.
00:24:09
Lewis
yeah
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'll come to you Lewis, this could be a great game, always hard to go to St James's Park, Newcastle not playing well at the moment, five games without a win, but it's all they're they're always bang up for it against the big sides at St James's. What do Arsenal have to expect?
00:24:30
Lewis
I think they've got definitely a tricky customer in Newcastle. We couldn't get the job done. And Arsenal aren't as good as us, so you never know they could actually lose despite Newcastle's poor form. But yeah, I think it's definitely a ah great game for the neutral. I think a lot of hungover people will definitely be getting up for that R12 anyway. But and yeah, ah certainly wouldn't I certainly wouldn't wouldn't put my money where my mouth is on that game. But hopefully Newcastle do you get a result, it would really help us.
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, this season, you don't really know what Newcastle is going to show up either. and They've looked good in some games. I thought they looked really solid against City, for instance. and ah Harvey Barnes started the season brilliantly, but he's gone off the boil as well. I think Bruno G, who, Jack, you were obsessed with bringing. I think he's had a bit of a poor season, to be quite honest.
00:25:19
Jack
Bye.
00:25:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, they've got they've got talent in the squad. They've also got injuries at the moment. And maybe all the England talk, upset, heady howl a little bit too. You never know what's going on behind the scenes. Amanda Stavely, who was in charge there, has left over the last few months too. But yeah, I don't think it's anything too cause for concern, but I expect it to be a very tasty game.
00:25:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So next we also have two teams towards the top of the table as for the second time in four days Liverpool face Brighton after after Liverpool's 3-2 victory at the Amex on Wednesday night. This is a great opportunity for Brighton. We've been in good form in the Premier League recently to get their revenge.
00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Liverpool undoubtedly want to retake their throne at the top of the Premier League, dropping to second after the 2-2 draw with Arsenal last week. They've got the best defence and goal difference in the league, plus 12 of just five goals conceded so far. So, Jack, how do you fancy Brighton going at that defence?
00:26:15
Jack
Well first and foremost I just want to say I appreciate the Amanda Stabley reference as it was Halloween yesterday. She is quite a spooky looking lady.
00:26:24
Jack
Brighton obviously played Liverpool recently at the Amex and they got beat quite comprehensively. Obviously they did score a few goals. I can't see it being any different in result when it's this weekend at the Premier League.
00:26:37
Jack
It's at Anfield, isn't it? So I feel feel like Brighton, they'll probably play a stronger squad, but I don't feel like it's going to change the result whatsoever.
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:26:47
Jack
I feel like go into Anfield, play under the Cops, it's not going to be fun for them, it's not going to be easy. Maybe they can string a decent performance together but I'll be very surprised if they come away with anything other than zero points.
00:27:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, fair. Brighton have got a couple of good results this year drawing with Arsenal. They probably could have won that game as it turned out as well. But Liverpool, they really seem like they don't even need to be at full flow and they and they can get the job done at the moment. And this is only at the start of Annie Slott's tenure at the club.

Ipswich vs Leicester and Southampton vs Everton previews

00:27:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, and Liverpool, very dangerous.
00:27:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd back them to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season, ah to be honest. I don't think there's going to be much between the top three. Could even have Liverpool above Arsenal, really. But yeah. ah Next, we'll have a look at two sides of speaking behalf of Daily Manchester City and our predictions at the start of the season. We might have expected to perhaps be a mirror in mirroring situations with Forest and West Ham.
00:27:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Forest have had an excellent start to the season. um They're currently in seventh with a three-point cushion over Spurs. And for me, Forest have two things in particular to thank for that. And Nuno setting up the team excellently in defence. They've got the second best defence in the league, conceding just seven goals so far. And the other factor, I think, is the big Kiwi up front, Chris Wood, who is simply on fire right now.
00:28:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
32-year-old has already smashed seven in this season, five of which will come in the last five games. Securing his team eight points in those five games with with just his goals, which that's crazy. That's crazy value. ah at West Ham, they struggled at the start of the season, but the last three games, they've got two wins. So our would our prediction, or at least me and Keelan specifically, and we we both had West Ham as a surprise package of the year. That still could be on.
00:28:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But yeah, they're they're only two points away from, ah I think it's Spurs, is it? a They might be a bit further away than that. Yeah, no, they are. that yeah They're in 13.
00:28:50
Lewis
and yes yeah yeah yeah um I think it's a great chance for Forrest.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're only two points away from Spurs. So yeah, it could in ah in a matter of a weekend, it could all it could all change. How do you see this one going, Lewis?
00:29:03
Lewis
Obviously they've started the best season that I've personally ever seen from Forrest. Obviously they've not been in the prem for a while apart from the last three years, is it now? But I mean, Chris Watergate's Leicester, for example, he's finishing, he's finishing chances like a prime con aguero on the spin.
00:29:19
Lewis
and into the bottom right corner. I didn't know his body was able to do that. So that actually shocked me. I mean, his frame and his versatility to score some of the goals I have seen him score is quite remarkable to be fair.
00:29:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
the athletes from New Zealand see.
00:29:32
Lewis
But I think,
00:29:37
Lewis
yeah, I think if they do win and results go the way, they could actually end up the end of the weekend in the Champions League spots, which is as astounding. from, I'm sure, any Nottingham Forest fans at the start of the season will be very happy with how their first half of the season has kicked off. Let's see if they can push on. I mean, we've got them in a few weeks, I think, so hopefully there's a slip-up, there's a banana cup bananas can come in for when we're playing, but yeah, I do see them getting their job done against West Ham.
00:30:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Fair enough, and ah we were looking at how West Ham could go upwards. I mean, Nottingham Forest could easily go upwards. They're only two points away from Arsenal in third. but How mad is that? So if all the results went their way, they could end up in third, which would which be amazing. they've all read I think last season they only got ah like low 30s points, and they've already got 16. That's half their total in nine games.
00:30:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, Nuno is an early runner for manager of the season so far, but I don't expect them to finish the season there, to be honest. Next, we're going to go down to towards the bottom of the table in two matches that could have ah huge potential for relegation possibilities. We're going to start a Portman round as Ipswich host Leicester. Last season's Championship top two going head-to-head. Both teams are going to be acutely aware of the importance of a big result. How'd you see this one going, Jack?
00:31:00
Jack
I see and a Liam De La Patrick and I don't see anything else. No, to be fair, actually. I could see Jamie Vardy getting on the score sheet again because for whatever reason, that man, that mythical being, he's still scoring in the Premier League on a diet of 40 Benson Blues and a few Red Bulls a day.
00:31:18
Jack
It's crazy, but he's he's just that guy.
00:31:19
Lewis
Ah, perfect.
00:31:21
Jack
So I can see him getting on the score sheet definitely, but I'm actually feeling really positive about Ipswich this season. um Obviously the results haven't gone their way, but if you've watched any of their games and how they play football, It's really positive under Karen McKenna. They play nice attacking, flowing football. Obviously maybe at times they they want to play a little bit too much and they should be a little bit more kind of comprehensive in how they build up. But that's his style of football. That's how he's going to go into games. That's how he's he's going to approach the season. They've got certainly the capability, you know, they've got the personnel to do that. And these are the games that they want to be targeting in their
00:31:57
Jack
OK, let's play our style. Let's go and and and blow Leicester away. Let's go and get three points. And I think they can do that this season and with certain games. And I think this is definitely one of them. So I think it's going to be probably three points going up switches way if I was a betting man.
00:32:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I agree with everything you've said there. um And I do like the way they play. And I think they've been unlucky in a lot of games. They've drawn five and lost four, but they haven't won yet. And you've got teams like Crystal Palace, who won their first game of the season. And and other than them, they're currently five points away from the next the next the next closest team. So whilst it hasn't been a disastrous start, I really think they need to win this one.
00:32:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ipswich too, because Leicester have had a slightly better start, currently in 15th on nine points, two away from Man United in 14th.
00:32:49
Lewis
need. hi
00:32:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Leicester look like, for me, they they're going to stay up. I think they've got enough quality and Steve Cooper's got enough know-how, he did it with a forest team and I think they're equally talented sides. So yeah, I think it's more important for Ipswich to get the three points in the bag here.
00:33:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Next we're going to go to Saint Mary's, who are bottom of the table, rock bottom, with just one point from nine games so far, hosting Everton. and Southampton have squandered leads in the home matches against their fellow promoted sides Ipswich and Leicester, the latter of which was a 98th minute Jordan-IU defeat, adds even more pressure for the Saints to get a result here. In fact, I think it's absolutely pivotal. Everton are in much better form after a very poor start of the season, accentuated with that late three-goal collapse in the defeat to Bournemouth.
00:33:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sean Dyche's side are currently and five unbeaten in the Premier League, only conceding three in those five games, drawing with Leicester, Newcastle fuller and Fulham, and bagging three points against Palace and Ipswich. The last game against Fulham will specifically keep the positive momentum going too, with Beto scoring a 94th minute equaliser. So, jack and ah Lewis, do you think Southampton can get their first win of the season here? How do how do you see this one going?
00:34:08
Lewis
I think it's not the best chance they've had so far this season to get the first three points on the board. I think it's definitely needed. I think funds will definitely be desperately hoping that they do get a result against Everton. However, I do see evanton Everton winning, I think,
00:34:26
Lewis
They start games quite well. They might not finish games quite well, as we've seen. you But if they do get a few early goals, I don't really see Southampton having the firepower to bring it back.
00:34:37
Lewis
I mean, Everton are, what, is it five unbeaten? Six in all competitions? It's something like that, something ridiculous.
00:34:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:43
Lewis
With what we expected from the start and the start they did have under Sean Dyche. I mean, a lot of Everton fans are worried. They were getting heckled in train stations with Mopay giving it back and all all the that was going on.
00:34:56
Lewis
But now I do think they have picked up and I think it is going to be a very hard task for Southampton with the added pressure of them being against Everton in a game that really they should should have a big chance of ah of getting a job done. So yeah, who knows which way it

Previews of Spurs vs Villa, United vs Chelsea, and Fulham vs Brentford

00:35:11
Lewis
could go. I do think a draw, a draw would definitely be a safe bet. If I was a betting man, of course.
00:35:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you were, of course. I think yeah it screams that that game is going to have 75% possession for Southampton and Everton are going to win 1-0, really, doesn't it?
00:35:26
Lewis
yeah yeah
00:35:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
but um which of which will Which will mean now I've called it, it won't happen like that, but that's what it suggests.
00:35:32
Lewis
and
00:35:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um That's all the Saturday games, I think. Yeah, ah on Sunday there's two absolute crackers in store. ah ah Spurs host Villa and United host Chelsea.
00:35:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll start with Spurs v Villa.
00:35:45
Lewis
Yeah,
00:35:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
How much would dare would you love to see Spurs lose this one after Wednesday, Jack?
00:35:53
Lewis
yeah.
00:35:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and Villa of all teams are capable to do it surely.
00:35:54
Jack
yeah
00:35:57
Jack
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, i mean that feeling would but would certainly be up there. I would like to see yeah Villa do it over over on his face. But to be honest with you, it could go either way and and I won't be too bothered because it's like a reminiscent of, you know, the last game towards the latter end of the season, and last couple of seasons when it's been those two teams kind of fighting out for that top four place, obviously Villa knitted it off from last season. and So, it you know, it could go either way. I actually, I don't really have any opinions on this game. I feel like it's one of them that I'm i'm just going to watch and enjoy as a neutral spectator. It could be,
00:36:35
Jack
either on and I'd probably enjoy it.
00:36:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i think I think it'll be a great game. Two teams and really buoyed and connected under the managers and playing some great football at the moment. Well, Spurs either do play great football or completely don't, I guess, but Villa definitely are a consistent team.
00:36:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and United host Chelsea in what is normally a fantastic game. Last season Cole Palmer bagged that crazy hat-trick to secure a win, but that was at Stamford Bridge. This fixture last season was a 2-1 win for Manchester United. Lewis, what do you think we got in store for what I think could could be goals everywhere in Ruud van Esteroy's first Premier League game as interim manager of Manchester United?
00:37:21
Lewis
Yeah, I think with the excitement of Reuben Amorim, basically confirmed now, isn't it? I think, obviously, the fans are going to be getting behind him.
00:37:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:37:29
Lewis
It's Old Trafford, it's the first league game since the second of 10-arg. You speak of the manager bounce being a thing, I think it definitely could be. I mean, Chelsea haven't beat or even got a result, I think, against United.
00:37:41
Lewis
I know they might have got a draw, actually, but they haven't beaten since 2013, Old Trafford. I mean, you'd probably back Chelsea to to do a job based off how the season's going. Obviously United sitting in 14. Can you still believe? I don't know, but it's it's a joy to see. But like you said, Cole Palmer doing doing wonders and last season there at home to United. Can you do the same again? We will see. Who knows? But I think you say goals are expected based off the last two seasons, definitely. But I think there was ah there was a period before that where it was like five draws in a row and I think like two or three nil-nils.
00:38:16
Lewis
So yeah, you never know what you're going to get from a game like that.
00:38:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think this is a very different Chelsea team to to one like that though. I think Enzo Mareska is a lot more attacking and I think United are so unpredictable that they're going to leave gaps and they're going to throw players forward too.
00:38:24
Lewis
yeah
00:38:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that a lot of that was shown on Wednesday where United ah could have scored 10, scored five, could have conceded five as well against Leicester.
00:38:39
Lewis
yeah
00:38:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, maybe that's the way they're going to play and hopefully for hopefully for the neutral. ah But yeah, ah United desperately need a result there, and Chelsea have only lost to City and Liverpool so far this year. um So I think they're doing probably, a lot of people are fancying them, but I think they're probably doing a lot better than what people think, to be honest. They seem to have sorted out and where the squad is at, who's who's the who the starters are, and a lot of them are young and a lot of them look like they're improving, so ah long may that continue.
00:39:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah one One game left on the weekend and it's Jack's favourite team Fulham hosting Brentford. um Monday Night Football Fulham did have an amazing start to the season, slightly peated off in the last three games, losing two of them against Brentford who ah on the flip side, ah started the season really well and a a la and now they've won two with the last three. So two very mid-tablesides, ninth played tenth. ah How do you see this one go in, Lewis?
00:39:42
Lewis
Yeah, I think it could go either way. This is a game that really could go either way, just based off the league position so far this season. The form of teams we're in, obviously Brentford have been been very lively from the off. Obviously not not the most recent games. They haven't set off as as brightly as they have before, but obviously Fulham have got a strong side. We know a strong Fulham are. We saw that when they came to the Etihad.
00:40:07
Lewis
But also Brentford do too. I mean, they scored earlier against us. They gave us a good game. I mean, we we only beat both of them. What was it? 2-1 against Brentford, 3-2 against Fulham. So I mean, it could be a good game for the neutral. I think Monday Night Football is in for a treat. And I definitely think that the Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher will have a lot on the hands to analyze after it. I think it could be could be quite tasty in regards to some of the dead water games that we do normally get on on a Monday night. So yeah, looking forward to it.
00:40:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and I reckon both both teams are going to have a good go as well. they I think both both of them repress really high, try and create turnovers and opportunities. And yeah, I'm a big big fan of Thomas Frank, and I quite like Marco Silva too, to be fair. so um I like Thomas Frank when he was on Monday Night Football as well actually so hopefully

Wrap-up and encouragement to follow City's fixtures

00:40:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
they'll get him talking a bit more then as well.
00:40:55
Lewis
Yeah.
00:40:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah that That'll do, it's been a very long episode, had a lot to cover today through City's match ah just gone and coming up and some of the other things that are going on this weekend for what should be an amazing weekend of Premier League football.
00:41:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully it ends with City still first on top ah top of the league.
