00:00:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, wherever you are listening in the world. This is your daily Premier League podcast. It is the 10th of September. I am your host, Nick Britton, and I am delighted to say, i am and i really am delighted to say this, by the way, because I've been doing the last three on my own.
00:00:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm delighted to say um yeah I'm joined today by the magnificent podcaster, radio host, Leeds United fan, so two out of three is not bad, Kate Munro.
00:00:30
Cate
Is that the only reason?
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kate, how are you?
00:00:41
Cate
Hello! I'm good! It's great to be here with you, you know, I'm in awe, Nick.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
it
00:00:47
Cate
ah I am! Don't tell don't talk Ken!
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
it know Well, in all that finally, we've been talking about doing this for months, finally I get you
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Finally I get you on.
00:00:55
Cate
Finally, yeah, with my questionable opinions.
00:00:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yes. Well, we're going to find out what they are a moment.
Nuno Espirito Santo's Sacking
00:01:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Last night's podcast was dedicated to one subject, which was, well, the only show in town, really, which was, of course, the surprise stroke, not surprise, sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo as manager of Nodigan Forest and the very swift replacement of Ange Postacoglu, who came in Pretty much about half an hour half an hour later.
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tries it in past noon on the way out, to be honest. And everybody's been kind of wondering, well, what does that mean? Because on the face of it, it is an appointment which makes a lot of sense because Maranakis, the forest chairman and owner, is a big fan of Ange.
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
But on the other sort of face of it, makes no sense whatsoever because he's going into a team and a squad which is set up to play the complete opposite of how he wants to play. Now, Kate, what is your opinion of what's gone on at Forest over the last few weeks?
00:01:58
Cate
Well, I heard at the end of last season, actually, that, excuse me, they'd they'd fallen out. There would there was a strain in relations. Apparently, um Nuno, you know, wanted certain activity in the transfer window that Maranacos wasn't prepared to to go along with.
00:02:18
Cate
And I remember an interview, actually, with Nuno. You probably saw it yourself where they, they yeah he kind of sort of um alluded to the fact that, you know, everything was a little bit tense and he might not actually sort of last there very long. And I was kind of hoping ah this season that they'd put that to bed because I really like him and I rate him as well.
00:02:42
Cate
And he obviously did a sterling job um last last season and finishing in seventh and getting them into Europe, for goodness sake. So I thought, you know, It's a real shame, but I think Maranacos had obviously made his mind up and and was waiting in the wings.
00:02:57
Cate
Like you say, two totally different styles of play, which I don't know how i don't know how that's going to work out given the squad that...
00:03:08
Cate
Nuno had kind of, you know, built up to play his particular style, um which isn't obviously the aggressive high-press style that and you know Ange Ball. um But we'll see, maybe more transfers incoming in January for Forrest.
00:03:24
Cate
um ah But, i yeah, I'm just on ah on a kind of personal level. like Not that I knew him, but I i am. I rate Nuno. And um I was sad to see him go, to be honest.
Nuno's Departure Theories
00:03:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, the catalyst, the actual catalyst for all of this, of course, there was stuff rumbling on over the summer. And of course, we had that extraordinary scene at the end of last season when Maranakis stormed onto the pitch at the end of the Leicester game, when Leicester took a point off Forrest and pretty much ruined Forrest's lingering, whatever lingering hopes they did have at that stage, ruined their lingering hopes qualifying for the Champions League.
00:03:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And all of a sudden, you're looking at that going, oh, Nuno's out the door.
00:04:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then, as you say, you had this kind of ongoing ongoing narrative over the summer of transfer markets and Was he getting the players he wanted or indeed were players being brought in above his head?
00:04:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And we now know that really the main issue, if you like, was was the ah signing, if that's the right word, of Edu, from who's a former sporting director Arsenal, as Forrest's global head of football, whatever that is.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sounds like a made up title to me. but global head of football, but essentially cut off the supply chain of conversation between Nuno and Maranakis. And then Nuno's got to go and deal with Edu. Edu's got his own players he's brought in.
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
A suggestion that Douglas Luiz, who came in on the last day at transfer market, Nuno just simply didn't want him. He wanted come a Traore, didn't get him. And then we had that like extraordinary press conference from Nuno just before the opening game of the season, which Forrest won and won comfortably against Brentford.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah where he essentially said, oh, yeah, no, it's all broken down. Don't have a relationship with anymore. We used to talk every day.
00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And now we don't. And that's the end of that. And anybody listening to that would automatically think, here's a man who's trying to talk himself out of a job. Here's a guy doesn't want to be here anymore.
00:05:09
Cate
We succeeded, right?
00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Here's a guy who who wants to get is's just kind of wants to get sacked. Doesn't want to leave because didn't get paid, but wants to get sacked and engineer a situation where it's very easy for Maranakis to hit the button on him.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
then then Then it kind of all calmed down a little bit and Forrest started the season well and, like say, good win against Brentford. Then a a decent point against Palace, to be fair.
00:05:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then we had the 3-0 home defeat against West Ham.
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
go And there hadn't really been any more talk about this. So you're kind of wondering, oh, well, has he survived for the time being? Then Nuno goes, oh, yeah, we're having clear-the-air talks during the international break, which, of course, re reinvigorates the whole story.
00:05:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the news came that the those talks never even took place and Maranacos just pushed the button on him. So that's the end of that. But I do feel, as much as Nuno has done a brilliant job, and he's arguably been, what, the most successful manager of Brian Clough down the road, sitting around,
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
he Do you feel that he...
00:06:11
Cate
Would City fans agree with...
00:06:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Go
00:06:13
Cate
Sorry, would City fans agree with you there?
Forest's Future Under Ange Postecoglou
00:06:17
Cate
Do you think? He's been he been as far as fans, yeah.
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
on. Jimmy Forrest fans.
00:06:22
Cate
would Would they agree with you that he's been as, you know, as great a manager as Cluffy?
00:06:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not as great a manager. No, the greatest manager since.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
<unk>to
00:06:30
Cate
youre so Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, he wins the European Cup and all that.
00:06:32
Cate
Got you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Fair.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no no no not not not as good as. But since Brian Clough walked yeah the hallowed turf of the city ground, have they had a successful manager, bearing in mind...
00:06:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
the very, very swift turnaround from relegation fodder to Champions League nearly bridesmaids, if you like.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
so And I can't think of anybody who's done a better job at Forest since Clough, really, because out of succession, spent a lot of time out of the Premier League, of course.
00:07:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, and yeah, that was my that was my kind of ascertainment.
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, Do you feel that by going public in this sense, he was engineering himself out of the club? Or was he just being a bit naive?
00:07:19
Cate
oh I don't think he was being naive. You're probably right. You see, i I always try to see the good in people. So I wouldn't have thought that personally. wouldn't be the first thing I think about. But yeah, probably knowing how he's really experienced, isn't he? And yeah.
00:07:35
Cate
You know, if it's it's not working to sort of his advantage, then I can't see really why he'd want to stay because he's not going to get anywhere with with a relationship like that. So probably.
00:07:46
Cate
um Poster Cogley waiting in the wings, wasn't he? Because that that was obviously a done and dusted deal, wasn't it?
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, quite quite obviously talks going on behind the scenes there for quite some time. We're going to just move on then in just a moment to what this means for Nottingham Forest. They've got a very tricky trip to Arsenal on Saturday.
00:08:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
how and bear in mind that all the players are still, well, most them are on international duty still.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, Angel, though he's got through the door yesterday... When will he actually have chance to sit down and talk to his players? Probably not till Friday morning when they're all back. What can you do between Friday morning and Saturday?
00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or indeed, will he bother trying to do anything whatsoever? but and what does this mean ah for Forrest moving forward? We're going to talk through all of that in just a moment. But first, a word from our sponsor.
Sponsorship and World Cup Podcast Promotion

00:10:04
Cate
I don't know, it sounded like a trailer for a porno. That's what I was obviously, thinking that's what i was thinking.
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:10:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
who
00:10:16
Cate
Ken trying to do sexiest voice.
00:10:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's probably not worth thinking about. Ken, by the way, who is my usual co-host on this podcast, and indeed ah my permanent co-host on Road to World Cup, is has disappeared off to France for a few days.
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're very much allowed to as rude as we want to because it very much serves him right.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Right, back on to the subject then of Big Ange, who this afternoon has announced his backroom team.
Postecoglou's Tactical Decisions
00:10:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they broadly come with him from Tottenham Hotspur. So he's got a four-person backroom team of Nick Montgomery, Sergio Ramundo and Rob Birch, all of whom were with him at Tottenham.
00:10:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then a new addition in Mille Zjedinac, who will be remembered very fondly by Crystal Palace fans, who was a great player for Palace back in the day. And yeah, they've all come from from Tottenham, essentially, with him. He knows them, he trusts them.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think he's going to try and do ah ahead of the Arsenal game Saturday?
00:11:13
Cate
Well, they are going to be without Ola Eina, aren't they? He's a defender. He's out after the or during the international break.
00:11:25
Cate
I mean, i don't know whether he's actually going to tinker that much with the team, to be honest with you. I mean, Arsenal, Saliba's out, isn't he? They're also Havertz and Bakay Saka.
00:11:37
Cate
ah they yeah They're doubtful. So, i don't know, maybe, I don't think they're going to do a lot. Is it, what, two days? One day?
00:11:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, this is it.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And and you've just, yeah, you've just reminded me, I must look at my fantasy league team because
00:11:47
Cate
couple of days before people get back?
00:11:54
Cate
I now forgot about mine.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um my i i'm i'm I'm really bad at this. And I was in America when I was reminded that like a day before the season started, I was meant to do it. So I literally put a team together on the run only to get back a week later to find something like nine out of the 11 were injured and therefore no points.
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And like some of them long-term injured and you can't just transfer people in and out without losing loads of points.
00:12:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm trying to rebuild from a position of about minus 100.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And
00:12:21
Cate
Just think if you what it would be like if you pull it off, though.
00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it'll be the greatest escape ever. but in favor football It'll go down in the annals of footballing history. I think if you're sensible, the reality is that Ange will only get like Friday morning with his team ah ahead of the trip to the Emirates on Saturday lunchtime.
00:12:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He might have preferred the game to have been a Sunday or even a Monday night game, but Saturday lunchtime it is. So he's not going to get time. He can't really work on any tactics. So the sensible thing for him to do is just say, look, go out and do what you've been doing for for the last few weeks.
00:12:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Against Arsenal, we know that Forrest play a very defensive counter-attacking game.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And against Arsenal, that might well work. that might actually be the best thing to do. It may be that the way Ange likes to play, certainly the way it played at Tottenham, which was all-out attack, very gung-ho, is not the thing to do when you go to the Emirates.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But when when the Arsenal game's come and gone and he gets his teeth into them, it'll be very interesting to see whether he he's got a choice, hasn't he?
00:13:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He can either just say, right, this is the way I play, therefore this is the way we're all going to play, Or he can say, right, this is the way i'd like to play, but the players that I've got at my disposal at the moment don't suit it.
00:13:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
They suit the way that they have been playing. Therefore, I'm going to adapt and do something a bit different. I think he's going to do plan I think he's going to go, well, to hell with it.
00:13:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is the way I play and we're all going to go for it.
00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that could, yeah, i think that's probably what he's going to do because that's what he's done everywhere he's gone. And that could prove very interesting. He says in brackets, curtains for Forrest's chances this season, closed brackets, because I can't say, they won't have a team for it.
00:14:02
Cate
Yeah, but, you know, they might get some silverware, though, mightn't they?
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, they won't.
00:14:06
Cate
Finish the bottom of the table.
00:14:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
They won't.
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
They'll be, if they go down that road, they don't have the players for it. If they go down that road, I think they'll struggle because the the players have been brought very specifically to play in a certain system.
00:14:07
Cate
Well, of course, they won't, no.
00:14:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
and that's And if you look at the back you know if you look at the back four, particular or the back two particularly, Milenkovic, Murillo, they're not going to cope with playing on a high line on the halfway line.
00:14:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah He turned around out to chase defenders back.
00:14:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
whos um Milenkovic was playing against, he got sent off by the way last night against England, Serbia.
00:14:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he's a great defender, but he ain't no Micky van der Ven over 100 yards. tell you that. So kind of works for them. I just, I don't know. it'll be it'll be It'll be fascinating to see what they do.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It really will. And it'll be interesting to see whether this is a successful move or not.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just not, I'm not, I'm not convinced.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
we not again And again, Ange Postacoglu the kind of manager, wherever he goes, you say, yeah, I'm not convinced.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then he wins things.
00:15:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
He wins things. He won the Europa League for Tottenham.
00:15:09
Cate
If he's going to get some sort of reinforcements in January, it might be more palatable to sort of just go for it between now and then. um And he's obviously being promised some sort of activity in January. They have to, because otherwise they're going I mean, we don't want him to go down. Well, mean I don't, you might.
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
but putting Putting personal differences aside, allegiances aside, do I want them to go down?
00:15:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, of course I do.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah um No, I know what you mean, though. but And he will be probably, Nottingham Forest spend loads of money all the time. Spend 200 million in year one, 200 million in year two. today Spending money is not going to be an issue here.
00:15:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not going an issue here. And they're able to get away with PSR because they sell loads of players that they've know they bring them, don't use them and sell them.
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm sure Ange has been promised a lot of funding and a lot of money.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
The most interesting thing is what happens when it doesn't go right and Maranakis starts ranting and raving at him.
00:16:15
Cate
I don't know I mean, Ange hosts great parties, perhaps they just you know what I mean, self-heard
00:16:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's going to be the interesting thing. If it doesn't, I'll say when it doesn't go right. If it doesn't go right, what happens then?
00:16:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, maybe they can just smash a bit of plates together or something like that. I don't know. But anyway, look, the reality is...
00:16:35
Cate
they've got an EFL match next week as well against Swansea for us start experimenting, yeah
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, well, that might be a time to try a few things. Yeah, I might try a few things. might try So yes, we'll see where they go. We'll see where they go on that. Right, Kate, whilst I've got you, I'm going to ask you, because you are a Leeds United fan and we don't hear
Leeds United's Season Challenges
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
from any those, I'm ask you about how Leeds have got on in the early part of the season.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But before I do that, let me say this. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we spend a lot of time selecting our delivery platform. And Zencastr came out the clear winner.
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you know this, Kate, because you were part of those discussions two years ago when we were looking at all these various different platforms.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So ah we loved Zencastr here at so GSPN. It's got 4K video recording from your phone, AI editing that automatically removes all those ums and ahs. We'll see whether it does in this advert. don't know.
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's super easy to start a podcast that sounds great and is delivered efficiently. So if you are ready to tell your story, click out the link in the show description and learn more about Zencastr. And is very good.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
We do like it.
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So ah hurrah, hurrah for Zencastr.
00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, we move on to the final bit of the show then. We've got a couple of things to discuss. Firstly, I'm keen to get Kate's idea of where she thinks Leeds have started and where how it's all going compared to how she expects it to go because she's a big Leeds United aficionado.
00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then a quick chat on the England players who have booked their place on the plane. two premily ah sorry Two World Cup qualifiers in the last few days. A rather miserable dirge of a 1-0 win against Andorra on Saturday, which I had the misfortune to be at.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
followed by an excellent 5-0 victory away from Serbia last night where they played really well. They were really good. And Serbia were a lot worse than Andorra, which you would not have expected.
00:18:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there we are.
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
So anyway...
00:18:38
Cate
Inconsistent though, isn't it?
00:18:40
Cate
Inconsistent. Doesn't fill you with confidence, right?
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, but I'd rather be winning 5-0 away from home than winning 1-0 at home. So we'll take we we'll take what we can get.
00:18:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all meaningless at the moment. It's about qualifying. That's all it's about.
00:18:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what it's all about. So let's just let's just enjoy the good times when they come because don't around that often. Right. Leeds United then. ah what do you What do you sense?
00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
You came into the season because we had a long chat to pre-season. Very, very pleased they got promoted last year.
00:19:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well done. And they were. i watched a lot of championship football and I thought they were the best team in the championship.
00:19:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they just about won the title, didn't in the championship? They scored in about the 1990s to win it, which was the right thing to do because Burnley, they bore-drawed their way to promotion.
00:19:22
Cate
Yeah, they did. Yeah, just Pip Burnley. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah work leads We're a much more exciting team to watch. So what did you think going into the new season and how has it started for you?
00:19:40
Cate
So going into the new season, i mean, obviously it's been a project, hasn't it, since we were relegated, taken over by the 49ers who brought in, ah don't know, brought loads of optimism, you know, really sort of feel good.
00:19:53
Cate
Fans started believing again after that dreadful relegation. And didn't happen for us season before last. So we kind of sucked it up and went again and had a really, really good season. And all the sort of noises coming out of the board and everything, you know, you kind of couldn't you couldn't couldn't help but be ah optimistic, basically.
00:20:16
Cate
um So quite frankly, when the transfer window slammed shut, I think myself and a lot of other people um were pretty Well, disappointed, ah uninspired, um and you were talking about a miserable scoreboard the other day. Well, that's what ah that's kind of um feeling I get when I watch Louise at the moment. I don't think they are cohesive. I know it's early in the season, but I don't think they're playing cohesively.
00:20:50
Cate
um the The players that should be performing aren't, we're not scoring any goals. That match last Saturday or the Saturday before last against Newcastle was awful, just awful too. I mean, Newcastle at the moment aren't doing exactly great, are they?
00:21:06
Cate
So that really was scoreboard. And we've had the five niil defeat, haven't we, at Arsenal. Yeah. beating at Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup.
00:21:22
Cate
It's just been pretty dire, Nick, to be honest with you. And i'm I know we're 12th, which is, you know, better than Burnley. um But Sunderland are in sixth, and that is kind of where I think we should be.
00:21:34
Cate
And plus the fact we didn't spend as much or as creatively as we should have done in the transfer window. We still haven't got a number 10. um We've bought... and Can I just carry on with my rant?
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
This is so I didn't expect it to i didn't expect it to be this long a rant. But yeah, do carry on.
00:21:50
Cate
I'm sorry. i was sorry
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll go sure i'll go make a cup tea shall I'll be back in 15 minutes.
00:21:52
Cate
Yeah, off you go. Off you go, yeah.
00:21:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, off you go. Off you go, yeah.
00:21:54
Cate
It's... some Dominic Carvet-Lewin on a free and Jack Harrison back from Everton, Everton's cast offs. And if you're getting Everton's cast offs, I think there's something radically wrong um with your kind of the way you're conducting your transfers. So, yeah, I mean, overall, pretty disappointed and quite bored at the moment, really.
00:22:18
Cate
Yeah. There you go. Over to you.
00:22:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah you're your strikers, your your your main strikers are Dominic Cavalier, who we've talked about, ah Joel Pirro, Noah Okafor, and is it then Mecha as well?
00:22:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are they the kind of four key strikers? Because Nonto kind of plays on the wing, doesn't he?
00:22:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not a striker. He kind of runs around the wing a bit. And then obviously you've got Harrison as a kind of creative forward, but not a striker. So are there goals? Are there going be enough goals in those lot? Because they are they haven't spent, you know, it's just, I would have expected Leeds,
00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
having learned the lesson from last time, to go out and spend big on a striker.
00:22:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was really, I like, you I mean, i'm not even a Leeds fan, but I kind of looked at them going, right, so Dominic Calvin Lewin then, yeah? Okay. That doesn't send any kind of signal to me, and I'm not even a Leeds fan, as I say, that they're going score enough goals here.
00:23:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not.
00:23:14
Cate
The sitters that he missed against Sheffield Wednesday, um it was embarrassing.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
The sitter,
00:23:21
Cate
It was embarrassing. Pirot wasn't a great scorer last season. um Certainly hasn't reached the heights that he did when he was at Swansea. So, yeah, um playing in a different position, admittedly, but still, I don't i don't think from what I can see, um yet again, it it was Nonto who's providing ah most of the opportunities from what I've seen.
00:23:47
Cate
Calvert-Lewin, like i said, miss it was like watching Patrick Bamford all over again. mean and ah you know you know, was just, no, awful.
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was. That's a very good, yeah, that's very good. So if I was to ask you to gaze into your crystal ball, and I'm sure you've got lots of crystal balls knocking around your house.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
In fact, you can barely move for crystal balls.
00:24:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
So pick one of them.
00:24:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pick one of them.
00:24:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Look into it deeply.
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Where are Leeds going to finish this season?
00:24:25
Cate
Gosh. That is ah good question, isn't it?
00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, that's why I asked, yeah. That's the whole point. That's how these things work. I ask the question and then you give me a good answer.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shall I do it for you?
00:24:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Shall I do it for you? Because I had leads as... When we did... because So Ken and I, when we did the podcast at the start of the season, he asked me to but predict my bottom three.
00:24:53
Cate
Don't. You're going to say 19, don't you?
00:24:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I had Brentford. I had Burnley. And then I had one out of two. I couldn't quite couldn't quite pin Leeds or West Ham.
00:25:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Couldn't quite pin it. So I said Leeds.
00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. ah because ah only because Only because I just don't think you've got the goals in you this season.
00:25:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if you can't score goals in the Premier League, you'll get relegated. It's as simple as that.
00:25:21
Cate
ah know. What on earth is going on? i I actually, when you asked me that question, the number 19 popped into my head as much as I hate to say it. But unless they sort something out, I mean, what in God's name possessed them to go with Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
often I feel like I've just given you this news and you look like you're in a state of shock.
00:25:52
Cate
and if we If we look at the spend, Sunderland spent 142 mil. We spent 108.
00:25:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:01
Cate
What have we got for that?
00:26:02
Cate
You know, decent goalie.
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:04
Cate
We needed that. um I just don't know the thinking behind it. I do not know the thinking behind it. And it's depressing, Nick, to be honest. us
00:26:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be fair, you sound depressed and you look depressed. I wish I'd never brought it up. If there's any consolation whatsoever, there's any consolation, when Ken and I did do our right, how do you think the bottom three teams are going to fare in order?
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah did I did put Burnley doing worse than Leeds. I put Sunderland at the top because think Sunderland are going to have a good season. i think they i think they're all right. I think they'll survive. quite comfortably. I think they're bought really well and they've got a really good manager.
00:26:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And one of my issues about Leeds a manager, I don't think Daniel Farker is cut out for the Premier League.
00:26:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He a terrible what his record in the Premier League is is is poor and that doesn't help.
00:26:50
Cate
But then he would argue that that was because he wasn't backed at Norwich.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, he might argue. Well, we can argue that.
00:26:56
Cate
which which Which, to be fair, could be could be true.
00:26:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
It might be true, I don't know. Still says relegation on his CV, doesn't it? Whether whether whether he was backed or not, or likes it or not. And to be fair, I think at Norwich that was the case, to be fair to me.
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
That probably was the case.
00:27:07
Cate
But that's kind of the case here, isn't it?
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spent £108 million. pounds
00:27:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not being backed.
00:27:11
Cate
Yeah, i know, but on what?
00:27:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
that's not that's not but That's not the point, is it? The manager's in charge. It's not like he's just come in and inherited all these players. He was in charge. He knew the players that were buying in. Presumably, he had a say on all of those players.
00:27:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
So he's got to live and die by that.
00:27:28
Cate
So do you think he'll last?
00:27:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I don't know whether... it depends what the new owners are like, whether they are the higher and higher type. but
00:27:37
Cate
Well, I hope so, because I'll tell you what,
00:27:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
with No, I don't. i don't If he lasts, Lee's won't, put it like that.
00:27:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think he's got in you.
00:27:44
Cate
ah do i do feel ah there's a new nose free now, isn't he?
00:27:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Stranger things have happened. That might be elevated. Actually, that might be elevated to my managerial merry-go-round slot that we do quite often.
00:27:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Well, my latest one is, or has been, for listeners of this podcast, you will know this, ah was Ameren out to be replaced by Oliver Glasner.
00:28:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But actually, Farker out to replaced by Nuno is a good shout.
00:28:09
Cate
Oh. Yeah, I'd love that.
00:28:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is a good shout.
00:28:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:28:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Well, I'm sorry to interrupt. No, as well, it's very defensive. Well, you say that. You say you don't like the style of football. And on the face of it,
00:28:17
Cate
I don't think the fans would like the style of football, though, to be fair.
00:28:25
Cate
No, I don't mind it, but I think some fans would object.
00:28:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
well, okay, would they just rather than just get relegated?
00:28:31
Cate
Yeah, probably. Yeah, like exactly.
00:28:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's the style of at moment? arc could stand what's what's the style of football at the moment
00:28:39
Cate
don't know. Sit back and do fuck off. Oh, sit back and do...
00:28:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's hope Zencaster can do its job there and rule that word out.
00:28:45
Cate
Sorry. Beep that out. Can you beep that out?
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I apologize to anybody who may have picked up a rude word.
00:28:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
kind of Honestly, I'm not inviting you back on.
00:28:55
Cate
Okay. ah washed my I washed my mouth out with safe and water.
00:28:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I say I'm not inviting you back on, but you're doing tomorrow's podcast anyway, aren't you?
00:29:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Friday. So I'm going to have to listen to it now. Make sure there's no normal words in it.
00:29:06
Cate
I know. I won't effing blind anymore. it was is i'm talking about leads, you know, i get frustrated.
00:29:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:29:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I can see that. Blimey. ah You ought to turn turn the lights and lie down after finish this. Yeah, so look we'll see we'll see. We'll see where it goes. We'll see where it goes. and Right, to finish the podcast then.
England's Recent Performances and World Cup Prospects
00:29:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
England have played two games in the last few days, as I said at the start of the show, a rather dispiriting 1-0 victory over Andorra on Saturday and ah very much improved 5-0 victory away at Serbia last night.
00:29:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
What has it done? How has it changed the manager's thinking? What is he thinking? And has anybody staked their place to be on the plane? What do you reckon, Kate? What do you reckon about England at the moment?
00:29:52
Cate
Um, so obviously there was goals from quite few players on, um, against, um, Serbia, which I think is really good.
00:29:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
00:30:04
Cate
Obviously, um shows kind of depth, pardon.
00:30:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Two goals from the centre-halves? Two goals from the centre-halves? No, you didn't see the game, did you?
00:30:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll tell you.
00:30:11
Cate
ah But I'm looking at Yeah.
00:30:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah ah we were well I did watch it and I did go to the game against Andorra on Saturday. So, I feel well qualified to say what about to say. Yeah, we had two goals from centre-halves last night. So, great great to see Mark Gay and also Conceau get on the score sheet.
00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And even Rashford managed to on the score sheet, albeit for a penalty, which was...
00:30:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
one of those that you look through your your sort of fingers at because he walks up to the ball and just waits. And he's looking at the goalie and a goalie's looking at him And it's painful.
00:30:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's painful to watch.
00:30:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he puts it, I think he's just waiting for the slightest shift of balance one way or another from the keeper. And then side-footed it the other way, not in the corner, far from being in the corner, but the keeper already committed his weight.
00:30:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I don't like penalties like that at all. I'm glad for Rashford.
00:31:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
i'm glad he scored.
00:31:01
Cate
Try being a Leeds fan.
00:31:02
Cate
They're all like that.
00:31:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. Run up. so Close your eyes. Smash the ball as hard as can.
00:31:08
Cate
Yeah, exactly. Just like I would.
00:31:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the way to take penalty, just like you would. Right, okay.
00:31:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd like to see
00:31:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd like to. So yeah, goals from all there. and I think that it's been an interesting it's been an interesting selection from Tuchel at the moment. He's had to try out some new players in new positions.
00:31:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
In the 10, against Andorra and Serbo, he kind of played a 4-1, 4-1. And he had Elliot Anderson in that one, in that holding midfield, which released Declan Rice to play much higher up the pitch.
00:31:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
On Saturday, he was playing close to Eze. ah Yesterday, he was playing close to Morgan Rodgers at Villa. And...
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Elliot Anderson has given Thomas Tuchel a real dilemma because he was by far the best England player on debut against Andorra on Saturday.
00:31:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
And last night, he played really well as well. Now, we've been thinking about, all right, okay, in England, ten how do you get Bellingham? And you build a team around Bellingham? you build a team Bellingham?
00:32:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who's going that holder? Well, Anderson's come in and in two games, rip that whole argument apart. Because if I was playing, if I started the World Cup tomorrow, Bellingham would not get in my team.
00:32:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
It would not get in my team. And and and I would ah'd have Anderson in there and I would have Rice pushing forward.
00:32:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it seemed to work. That kind of double pivot seemed work really, really well.
00:32:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I would have Rice over Bellingham every day of a week anyway. And it's it's been really, very interesting.
00:32:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that was why, because I just think he's a better player.
00:32:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think i think al just think he's a better player, right?
00:32:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think he can offer more to England. i think he does offer more to England. I think he blows far less hot and cold than Bellingham does.
00:32:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Bellingham's a very important player for England, but he's not on my absolute must-start list of players.
00:32:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jordan Pickford in goal.
00:33:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
about the spine of the team. Jordan Pickford in goal is. ah Mark Gay he is at centre-half. I think could be on he's our number one centre-half. There's a position next to him which is up for grabs, I think. In midfield, Declan Rice is.
00:33:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Harry Kane is up top. I'm glad you're not Ken because he just then now got a massive rant about how much he hates Harry Kane.
00:33:19
Cate
Why does he hate him?
00:33:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, because he just thinks he's slow, old and rubbish. Conveniently forgetting about the fact that he scores loads goals. and And probably, probably Bakaya Saka is as well when he's fit.
00:33:32
Cate
Yeah. Yeah, when he's fit.
00:33:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Madweke's played really well in the last two games. He's certainly staked his claim.
00:33:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Eze was 50-pointing on Saturday.
00:33:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not his best position, and he was forever surrounded by eight shirts, the eight yellow shirts, so it didn't quite work for him. But ah really like him.
00:33:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's one of my favourite players.
00:33:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I'm not a great fan of Gordon, but he did come on on Saturday make a bit of a difference and played well last night. Then you've got this kind of bat batch of newcomers like Morgan Gibbs-Wyatt. ah again came on on Saturday i made a bit of a difference and what have you um what does that mean for the older guard like Rashford don't know it's interesting that Tuchel's picked him for these two games and played him and and John yeah who came on last night yeah
00:34:13
Cate
And Henderson as well. Jordan Henderson.
00:34:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah why mean we know he's back in the room well yeah but why do you experience when you fought lap and wait home for Serbia yeah
00:34:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know he's back in the Premier League and all that. And I appreciate i appreciate his place in the squad behind the scenes. But not really at the point.
00:34:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not really at a point um putting him putting him on the pitch, ah particularly.
00:34:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So, yeah, I think you've got probably four or five players who you're absolutely nailed on, which is great because it means there's loads of other...
00:34:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
there's like that every position Nearly every position's up for grabs.
00:34:52
Cate
Yeah, yeah. That is good.
00:34:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
one way or the other. we we Rhys James has been playing right back and done a good job. So does that mean the end for Trent, Alexander-Arnold? Myles Lewis Skelly has come in and done well at left back, but he's not playing for Arsenal.
00:35:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if he continues not to, because Califieri is playing at left back at the moment, if he doesn't get game time, can he continue to play there?
00:35:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Tino Liveramento came in Played really well. He had a really good England under-21 tournament in the summer. He's playing back regularly at Newcastle. So, you know, there's competition in those sorts of places.
00:35:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And the front four, other than Kane, you've got a front three there. And we've talked about Eze, we've talked about Madweke, we've talked about Morgan Rodgers, who had a really good game last night.
00:35:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah he's yeah know He's in there. We've not even got around to Cole Palmer or Phil Foden and players like that.
00:35:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Tuchel's got an embarrassment of riches.
00:35:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He really has. It's a great position to be in.
00:35:48
Cate
It's a good position to be in, isn't it?
00:35:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's great to have a selection head-a-liners. But, you know, huge, huge kudos to Elliot Anderson, the Nottingham Forest midfielder, who has come in and he's been given an opportunity and he's he's he's grasped it.
00:36:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's taken it. He's stolen it. He's waved it around and he's said to Tuchel, pick me. I'm your man for that DM role in the in the middle of the park. Good man.
00:36:11
Cate
And what about against Andorra? What was he like then? Was he good?
00:36:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
is england He was yeah pretty much the only England player to come out with credit.
00:36:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
He really was.
00:36:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, it's very difficult to give any credit to Jordan Pickford or the back line because they didn't do anything.
00:36:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah was very disappointed with Rhys James ah because he pushed on. He got himself in lots of attacking positions, yet every time he had a chance to whip the ball in, it was just pass it backwards, pass it backwards, pass it backwards.
00:36:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Until he did finally whip the ball in. And guess what? We scored from a header. Declan Rice was on the end of it. So that was disappointing. um And at the other end, at the other side, Lewis Skelly played okay. and So, yeah, they were all they all had an off day against Andorra apart from Anderson who just buzzed around the pitch, winning the ball, passing it on, passing it on, passing it on, passing it on and just kept the whole show ticking along. was very good.
00:36:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very impressed. And of course, he had a great season at Forest last year as well. So he's really catapulted himself into the England set-up.
00:37:07
Cate
Good for him. Good for him.
00:37:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, good him.
00:37:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So...
00:37:09
Cate
And we've got um Latvia and...
00:37:11
Cate
so la bit and Yeah, like Latvia, 14th October next.
00:37:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, next game Latvia, if we win that, we've qualified. It's all over because we've played 5-1-5 and not conceded a single goal, which may look brilliant until you look at the opposition. The opposition's just trickle.
00:37:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
So really, we should be playing five, winning five. You drop at any point.
00:37:30
Cate
We should be, yeah. We should be yeah winning five and by five every match if the opposition's so crap.
00:37:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:37:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. so that's how it is. Right, okay. Well, look, that so brings us to the end of today's podcast. Thank you very much indeed for being with us. As we always say, make us your first and only, well, not only, we can we'll we'll let you listen to others.
00:37:51

Global Sports Podcast Network
But certainly make us your first listen of the day here at the Daily Premier League podcast. ah More tomorrow as we start to build up looking at the weekend's game.
00:38:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, football is back, people.
00:38:03
Cate
Mmm, can't wait. I know.
00:38:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Premier League is back. Thank goodness for that, I hear everybody say. But until then, Kate, thank you very much indeed for joining us. It's been great.
00:38:12
Cate
You're welcome. Yeah, I've enjoyed it.
00:38:13
Global Sports Podcast Network

00:38:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
