The Fifth Element (1997)

This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris make sure they have their Multipass and discuss Luc Besson's 1997 classic The Fifth Element, which is back in theaters on July 26th and 27th.

Starring Bruce Willis as former special forces soldier turned taxi driver Korben Dallas, the literal savior of the universe falls into the back of his cab in the form of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich).  The mystical "Fifth Element", Leeloo is a perfect being and the only weapon that can defeat pure evil that is heading toward Earth in the form of a massive, burning planet.  Working on behalf of that evil is ruthless industrialist Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman), who is looking to prevent Leeloo from acquiring four powerful stones that represent the classical elements and are part of the ritual that allows her to unleash her power.  Zach and Chris discuss whether this is Luc Besson's best movie, the incredible production design, Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker) storming into the movie like a tornado, the final action sequence feeling like a mini Die Hard, and more.

You can watch The Fifth Element in theaters on July 26th and 27th or, if you can't make it out, watch it on Netflix, Tubi, or YouTube.  Next week, with a new Spider-Man movie out in theaters, we're revisiting arguably the best movie featuring the wallcrawler, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2.

Revisiting 'The Fifth Element' and Luc Besson's Filmography

00:00:22
Zach Sheets
Hello and welcome to the Everything Action Cast podcast week of July 20th, 2026. I'm your host, Zach.
00:00:28
Chris Prime
your co-host, Chris.
00:00:30
Zach Sheets
And this week we're making sure we have our multi-pass because we're talking about The Fifth Element, which is actually back in theaters if you're hearing this before July 26th or July 27th, you actually check check it out in theaters. Otherwise you can watch it on Netflix or other streaming services. But yeah, definitely 90s classic.
00:00:47
Zach Sheets
And but I would say... the best Luc Besson movie.
00:00:51
Chris Prime
Oh, arguable, arguable.
00:00:53
Zach Sheets
i mean, leot Leon's great. I'm trying to think what else what else he's like.
00:00:59
Chris Prime
Do you not like Luc Besson's Valerian?
00:01:04
Zach Sheets
I mean, it's it's it's definitely trying to like recapture some of that fifth element

Besson's Cinematic Style and Inspirations

00:01:10
Zach Sheets
magic. there's There's a lot of cool stuff in Valerian. It's definitely not as good as fifth element's.
00:01:15
Chris Prime
I didn't see the the Dracula movie. I don't all of them know if that was good.
00:01:18
Zach Sheets
I have not seen that yet, no.
00:01:20
Chris Prime
And you think it's going to be more out there, but I heard it's it's way more of a romance movie.
00:01:27
Zach Sheets
m
00:01:29
Chris Prime
and
00:01:30
Zach Sheets
Oh, La Femme Nikita, too, is classic one from him.
00:01:35
Chris Prime
Yep, that one. I saw more of the TV show than I saw is the original one. I really liked Angel A, if you've ever seen that one.
00:01:44
Zach Sheets
I've never seen that one, no.
00:01:45
Chris Prime
It's good. It's kind of like the same, what if they took Fifth Element, but get rid of anything else with like world saving and just made it about like some schlubby guy convincing an angel to love him.
00:01:57
Chris Prime
You had me in the right mood, and I was in the right mood to watch Angel A.
00:01:58
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:02:00
Chris Prime
And it's crazy.
00:02:00
Zach Sheets
Did you watch Anna as part of your watching all those assassin movies that weren't really about assassins?
00:02:01
Chris Prime
What?
00:02:09
Chris Prime
Yeah, I hated 411.
00:02:09
Zach Sheets
It was Anna and then what was the other one with Justice Chastain? Well, there was that one, but there was another one too.
00:02:15
Chris Prime
Oh, no, that's Anne.
00:02:18
Zach Sheets
Anne, yeah.
00:02:18
Chris Prime
oh no no that's and
00:02:20
Zach Sheets
and yeah
00:02:22
Chris Prime
No, no. i Sorry, I'm confusing Anne on Anne. Oh, Anne is a better version of Anne, but they're essentially the same movie. It's like, we work for this agency as a spy. Oh, no. My handler's betraying me. Like, God, again?
00:02:37
Chris Prime
But Anne is...
00:02:37
Zach Sheets
Oh, a ave Ava is the Just a Chess A movie.
00:02:40
Chris Prime
Oh, my God. It's all, like, interchangeable.
00:02:42
Zach Sheets
and
00:02:43
Chris Prime
Ava's the worst. I think Ava's the worst.
00:02:45
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:02:45
Chris Prime
Anne... is the same concept of like, here's a deadly woman that we pissed off and we shouldn't have pissed off. But it's it's not bad. Like, it's it's nowhere near the professional. But in that it's like the in the same ballpark of...
00:03:03
Chris Prime
of like, hey, do you like an assassin movie that wants

The Production Design of 'The Fifth Element'

00:03:06
Chris Prime
to be kind of like subversive? Because they put too many twists. And that's another thing. It's like that movie, like, Luc Besson only have twists in his movies.
00:03:15
Chris Prime
And then for whatever reason, in in Anne, he crammed as much as possible into it.
00:03:20
Chris Prime
But yeah, I haven't seen like his other set, like Dogman, John and June, or June and John.
00:03:27
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of his recent ones. The last recent one i saw was probably Lucy.
00:03:31
Chris Prime
Yeah, I think everyone saw Lucy because
00:03:32
Zach Sheets
of of Valerian valeria was after Lucy. Valerian was last one saw from him. That was like recent.
00:03:37
Chris Prime
I still haven't seen Valerian. I just know, like, over time, people are slowly kind of rediscovering it, but it it just, like, it's not the same.
00:03:49
Zach Sheets
Well, the fifth element I had, you know, one of the people that designed it was Jean-Claude Messier, who created Valerian. so at some point, like, Besson had to, like, had to, like, eventually make a Valerian

Nostalgia and Cultural Impact

00:04:01
Zach Sheets
movie.
00:04:02
Zach Sheets
And then also Mobius, like, one of the most famous artists of all time. Like, french French comic artists. its Inspired, like, so much, like, tons of things.
00:04:13
Zach Sheets
and You can definitely tell you definitely tell like they had like these like very famous, very like distinctive comic artists on this, because I think the production design is like one of the strongest but elements of the fifth element.
00:04:23
Zach Sheets
It's just like all the creature designs and the costumes and spaceships. like Everything is just so like so weird and unique. unique
00:04:33
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's got a mix of practical effects with early like work that has aged very selectively.
00:04:47
Chris Prime
Like it.
00:04:48
Zach Sheets
I would say of like, we've watched quite a few movies for the podcast where like, always talk about like, the CGI does not hold up at all. This holds up pretty, like the fifth element holds up really well.
00:04:58
Zach Sheets
Most of it.
00:04:58
Chris Prime
Yeah,

Character Comparisons and World-Building

00:04:59
Chris Prime
most of it holds up. Obviously, there are parts where it's a little rough just because it's a lot of like cartoonish effects, and then they are doing it in the harsh lighting, and they haven't figured out the the like you know the limitations yet.
00:05:11
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:05:16
Chris Prime
And i think i think in a casual viewing, your brain won't notice it. But on a, like, if you're watching it three times in a year, things will jump out at you.
00:05:24
Zach Sheets
No.
00:05:31
Chris Prime
At least that's how I understand it. Because this is one of those movies where it was just on a lot after the VHS release.
00:05:37
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:05:39
Chris Prime
And it's one of my, like, vivid, like, rental movies I saw. didn't see this in theaters. I rented it when it came to, like, a Hollywood video store. Just because my local blockbuster didn't have it, but the Hollywood video did.
00:05:54
Chris Prime
And I had two memberships because i was fancy like that. And yeah, just like picking it up. i was like super excited. that This was like a great Friday night. You know, you get that one rental for the weekend or the two nights, basically.
00:06:09
Chris Prime
and You just like eat some microwavable popcorn. that That's like a core memory was watching this. And it's and it's crazy because like I I like didn't know going more Die Hard movies.
00:06:23
Chris Prime
So to me, this has always been my Die Hard 4.
00:06:27
Chris Prime
For the longest time. i was like, yeah, it's like a...
00:06:28
Zach Sheets
like like future Die Hard?
00:06:29
Chris Prime
What Die Hard movie? Yeah, future Die Hard. I kind of crammed it in there as part of the Die Hard series where one of the descendants of John McClane is just John McClane on harder times.
00:06:40
Zach Sheets
I mean, the last last big action sequence is kind of like a mini Die Hard scenario. Like terror terrorists take take terror take over like a place and then they have to fight them all?
00:06:46
Chris Prime
But it's great. This would... Yeah. Diehard, diehard situation.
00:06:50
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:06:52
Chris Prime
With the diehard being the star. That's why if they ever did a diehard four in that timeline, and then this would have been the fifth diehard fifth element or whatever.
00:07:00
Zach Sheets
see
00:07:02
Chris Prime
Diehard, the fifth element. And then that's it. That's just the weird mashup title.
00:07:06
Zach Sheets
John McClane gets like cryo-frozen then ends up in like the future.
00:07:09
Chris Prime
it doesn't have to be like John, mc doesn't mean that John McClane. It could just be a descendant. And I'm fine with that.
00:07:13
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:07:14
Chris Prime
Cause it just, it did it just, said about this family that is cursed by terrorists.
00:07:20
Chris Prime
I mean, there's a whole different movie that happens in this world, right? There's this great sense of world building that, like, if they did a prequel comic, or if they did, like, a spin-off about something, you could still understand it.
00:07:37
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:07:38
Chris Prime
And that's what's really good about this, and I think... it's One of my regrets is not seeing Valerium anytime soon, but I also just don't have an interest. But I should. I think as a comic person, I should, like, either read Valerium or watch it.
00:07:54
Chris Prime
But Fifth Element, I

Plot Analysis and Character Dynamics

00:07:55
Chris Prime
think, was what, like, I think he wanted to make Valerium Luc Besson and then he ended up making Fifth Element waiting to see if he can make Valerium later.
00:08:06
Zach Sheets
Well, i think I think he came up with like the idea for this. like I think he was a like he was a fan of Valerian, obviously, but I think he did this was original idea he came up with in like high school, and he was trying trying to make it for like you know decades, and if I was able to make it.
00:08:22
Zach Sheets
And then 10 years later, he was like, oh I get to make an actual like Valerian movie.
00:08:28
Zach Sheets
there was also, I think there was a, there was like a a segment from Heavy Metal that was like kind of, like it's a little bit Fifth Element-y. They came up like for this where it was like, yeah, but it was like, it was it was like a taxi driver.
00:08:38
Chris Prime
Oh, came out, like, way before this. The heavy metal thing was earlier.
00:08:42
Zach Sheets
He gets in he's gets caught up in like, it's like a future and he gets caught up like a, there's like a woman that like falls into his cab, basically ends his cab. He just like gets caught up in.
00:08:49
Chris Prime
She ends up in the... She runs in his cab from outrunning some other crime thing, but then...
00:08:53
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:08:54
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like... The cab driver is just a typical, like, New York cab guy, but he's very, like, jaded about people.
00:09:02
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:09:02
Chris Prime
And rightfully so.
00:09:03
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:09:03
Chris Prime
And... Corbin Dallas has that beginning attitude where, honestly, at certain points, you could realize that he's just the villain, too. You know, like, he could have been... It's the one thing that could have pushed him on the over the edge, and he's just straight up, like, a mercenary.
00:09:19
Chris Prime
But, no, he's got, like, you know, stoic charm that we still don't know what happened to this guy. that like This, like, decorative warrior that is just... I don't know what happened.
00:09:34
Zach Sheets
I love the rundown of, like, Corbin Dallas is just, like, he's got a, like, he was in a special forces group, and he's the only one that survived. Or, like, he's the only one left alive. He was, like a like, the top fighter pilot, Medal of Honor winner.
00:09:48
Zach Sheets
he's just, like, most insanely decorated person. And then he had ended up, like, driving a cab.
00:09:53
Chris Prime
And it's not because of a woman, right? They don't explain. I thought he had an ex-wife.
00:09:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he got like, yeah, he got like he got divorce and then he's like, yeah, he's driving a cab. he Like he's, know, he's got a cat that he loves and his mom is like hounding him constantly, which is like a great running joke through the whole movie.
00:10:14
Zach Sheets
Like somehow wherever he is, like his mother is able to find him and call him.
00:10:19
Zach Sheets
It's like, what are you doing? You should, cut I should be the one on vacation, not whoever you brought. Like brick what are you doing to your mother over here?
00:10:26
Chris Prime
Really trying to pull off that New York mother accent. How's Zach?
00:10:31
Zach Sheets
but why But why don't like don' we jump all the way back to 1914, which is where the movie starts, which we get.
00:10:37
Chris Prime
Surprise! It starts in like, period piece.
00:10:40
Zach Sheets
Yeah. a lot of Egyptian stuff going on. Because I think Stargate was also around this time.
00:10:47
Chris Prime
Maybe like two years prior. It's It's not like was like 1993.
00:10:52
Zach Sheets
The show had started, SG-1 started the same year as this.
00:10:54
Chris Prime
Oh, okay. 1996? 97, okay.
00:10:56
Zach Sheets
97, yeah.
00:10:56
Chris Prime
ninety ninety six and seven okay
00:10:59
Zach Sheets
so The movie was 94 for Stargate.
00:11:02
Zach Sheets
But yeah, it's like h ancient and Egypt. You got Luke Perry in like a cameo in the early scene. He's like the assistant for like this archaeologist, and they discover, they're like uncovering this hieroglyphics that kind of like lay out the entire premise of the movie.
00:11:22
Zach Sheets
And then aliens show up.
00:11:25
Zach Sheets
Giant, giant, clumsy-looking aliens.
00:11:29
Chris Prime
Yeah, like almost a Doctor Who level alien creature design pops

Influence of Fashion and Futuristic Elements

00:11:35
Chris Prime
up. And this is where the tailing Gilliam inspiration comes out of because this seems like something out of, think like Brazil.
00:11:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah, Brazil are one of the... A lot of stuff feels like very Brazil, like the technology and like just like how everything everything everything looks.
00:11:50
Chris Prime
It's futuristic, but also retro. Even now, when you look at it, it feels dated for future tech.
00:11:59
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
00:12:00
Chris Prime
And I think that's intentional. they wanted to They didn't want to go with sleek space-agey, where everyone's wearing like like very slim and tiny clothes. and i mean, besides what Leeloo gets.
00:12:15
Chris Prime
But, yeah, the alien race could have been what the... what the like warrior race people could have been, right? But then we get this, what is it, like Mondo Sharwin?
00:12:28
Zach Sheets
The Mondo Shaans are like our allies or like they protect they they protect like the universe, I guess, from the evil, like pure evil that tries to come back every 5000 years.
00:12:31
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:12:41
Chris Prime
So, they they are come in secret, because it seems like in 1914, they already came here, established communication with the Catholic priest or whatever, kind of like...
00:12:51
Zach Sheets
Yeah, they have they have like a secret order of priests that like know about them, and then like they know about the stones, which are like are the like the keys to unlocking a weapon that will defeat evil.
00:13:04
Chris Prime
But I don't know if they had approved this 5,000 years prior just because... For all we know, they were not good guys either. It's just sort of like, because they they killed like an archaeologist just because he was there. like You know what I mean? like it's It's not a good start.
00:13:21
Zach Sheets
did Did the archaeologist actually... like I feel like he fainted. I don't think they killed him. like like Luke Perry's like, oh, you killed him, but like I don't think he checked his pulse right there.
00:13:27
Chris Prime
That's true.
00:13:30
Zach Sheets
I think the guy's just like he's like, oh, it's aliens. I'm going faint now.
00:13:34
Chris Prime
No, no, no, there's a thing where the other alien like nodded, and the other one like responded, then the professor just drops down to the ground.
00:13:43
Zach Sheets
It's not clear either way. I don't know. It's not really clear in head.
00:13:44
Chris Prime
it's not like It's not super kill him, but it's for all you know, that guy's dead, just because...
00:13:48
Zach Sheets
they They didn't pull they didn't pull like a gun and like blast him or disintegrate or something.
00:13:51
Chris Prime
No. But speaking of which, after they gather everything... Why did they leave one alien guy behind? Like, it... the There wasn't a countdown. The aliens don't have all the time in the world. I don't understand why they left one behind.
00:14:08
Zach Sheets
Well, i feel I feel like because Luke Perry shot at him, maybe that triggered like some like some sort of like the temple's closing. Yeah.
00:14:13
Chris Prime
How does the temple know? Like, I don't...
00:14:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:14:16
Chris Prime
So, okay, I get that it closes.
00:14:18
Zach Sheets
it's so It's also funny that the aliens are so awkward and like slow that like if he had just been like a normal like humanoid alien would have gotten out easily, but because he's so like big and clumsy, he you can use just has to try to waddle
00:14:25
Chris Prime
Yep.

Narrative Structure and Iconic Scenes

00:14:28
Zach Sheets
his way out.
00:14:29
Zach Sheets
He's just like, well, I'm going to reach the door. so
00:14:32
Chris Prime
Okay, take the key.
00:14:32
Zach Sheets
take the key.
00:14:34
Chris Prime
The guy has the key. Open the door. Right? Does it seem like that alien is now just trapped behind that door forever now?
00:14:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Hmm.
00:14:42
Zach Sheets
Yeah, and it never never comes back. They don't like open that door and find like an alien skeleton, or like he just comes back out like, hey, what what year is it?
00:14:50
Chris Prime
Yeah, i I think they basically he took the key, opened the door, got him out, and then he's like, alright, I'll hold your secret.
00:14:50
Zach Sheets
By the way,
00:14:58
Chris Prime
Also, that you mention it, Luke Perry just sort of takes a nap on the ground. It doesn't, it it doesn't, like, he just trips, I get it, but he trips in a way that's not, knock he yourself out.
00:15:10
Chris Prime
It's just like, oopsie, you know? Then he just lays there on the ground. i couldn't figure, I even, to you know, like, as a kid, I noticed that, I thought, okay, maybe I missed something, maybe something, something got thrown at him.
00:15:24
Chris Prime
But no, Lou Perry just trips and then just goes, well, I'll just lay down here now. I live here now.
00:15:31
Zach Sheets
I'll try to try tell people there's aliens, but I guess like, I mean, the did the priest tried like the priest like try to finish the job of like, because he tried to poison them earlier? Like, he's like, you can't, no can know about this. I'd just like stab you or shoot you down.
00:15:43
Chris Prime
See what I mean? That's all like, okay. It begins already with the priest with the vial of poison that he has to show the audience.
00:15:50
Zach Sheets
here
00:15:51
Zach Sheets
But I guess that secret society kind of like like keeps going until 300 years later when it's you know the future and then the evil comes back. as a a giant like living planet or like a fireball planet that's like moving toward Earth.
00:16:09
Zach Sheets
But it can also like transmit radio calls and like can like call people because apparently they called Gary Oldman, Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg, to like have him be like his agent on Earth to like get the stones and like destroy them or like do whatever you want like whatever the the evil's going with them.
00:16:27
Chris Prime
I love how not really Frenchy Gary Oldman's playing this character.
00:16:32
Zach Sheets
Oh no, he's like liked Southern or Texas or something.
00:16:37
Chris Prime
Yeah, he's Southern European.
00:16:40
Zach Sheets
I think I read that Gary Oldman was basically like he he's doing a mix between Ross Perot and Bugs Bunny is what he said he was going for.
00:16:47
Chris Prime
I can hear the Bugs Bunny part. It's the, like, faking the buck teeth accent.
00:16:53
Zach Sheets
Mm
00:16:54
Chris Prime
And then trying to have that Ross Perot, Southern charm, but not a current Colonel Sanders or a
00:17:04
Chris Prime
Foghorn Leghorn.
00:17:06
Zach Sheets
hmm.
00:17:07
Chris Prime
So it's very controlled. But I think this was one of my first introductions to Gary Oldman, I think, as a kid. Like, really, really, like, seeing him.

Themes of Love and Resolution

00:17:19
Chris Prime
And just blown away that this is an Englishman. You know, it's just like whoa.
00:17:23
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:17:25
Chris Prime
Because in other roles, he's like very eloquent and, you know, someone's like, oh, he's also like Dracula. i was like, what?
00:17:32
Zach Sheets
yeah just just just more proof that like yale is just like the ultimate like chameleon like acting chameleon can just turn into anything or anyone and do any any voice
00:17:41
Chris Prime
did you ever see the Braumstruckers Jackula before Fifth Element or after Fifth Element?
00:17:48
Zach Sheets
It's probably so after. Yeah.
00:17:50
Chris Prime
I saw it before, but I didn't really know anyone in it besides Keanu. You know, it's one of those movies watch as a kid, and you're like, I guess.
00:17:54
Zach Sheets
hey yeah
00:17:58
Chris Prime
And then, yeah, then you realize they start really following actors' careers and everything. It's just dumbfound that, like, Gary Oldman is one of the villains in this movie of villains.
00:18:12
Chris Prime
And he's the one villain that, like, the heroes don't really interact with.
00:18:20
Chris Prime
Besides like the this scene. Besides like the overall like oh introduction to Zorn. And then later he's like, okay. woo like He's aligned himself with this evil plan.
00:18:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like, the evil, like like, calls itself Mr. Shadow, and then it calls him and, like, is, like, wanting him to, yeah get the stones. Then he hires mercenaries, like the Mangalores, who are these alien mercenaries that show up and, like, are willing to trade weapons for, to get him the stones.
00:18:49
Zach Sheets
And then they they intercept the, because the the Manashawans are coming back because the evil's back, they're come back to Earth and help us and go back to that same temple that hasn't been demolished or covered over or anything's happened to them in 300 years. It's still the exact same way it was in 1914.
00:19:08
Zach Sheets
and then put all the elements back in place and like you know blast it with like the weapon that they have. The fifth element, which is the ultimate weapon to kill evil.
00:19:16
Zach Sheets
But then they get like blown up and crash land on some planet on the way there.
00:19:22
Zach Sheets
Which is weird. They have like apparently have no weapons. They have no like defensive weapons themselves. They just like take the just take it and get blown up.
00:19:29
Chris Prime
Yeah, so that that part is a little weird. It's this, they have this ultimate being, the supreme being of light, that they transfer across the galaxy, I assume, and no, like, carrier protection.
00:19:39
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:19:44
Chris Prime
Just, here's a cargo container, a cargo carrier, no weapons. If you start firing on it, it's got nowhere else to go but straight.
00:19:54
Zach Sheets
But we also, it's also, we learn later that their light speed exists, but they're not going at light speed. They're going at like just normal, like cruising speed.
00:20:01
Chris Prime
Cruising. Yeah. They go on like a pleasure cruise through like the checkpoint gate, which then is immediately attacked. And i guess they crash land on the moon.
00:20:12
Chris Prime
Somewhere
00:20:14
Zach Sheets
Yeah, some somewhere.
00:20:16
Chris Prime
enough that the Earth people can get to it and like start poking around the wreckage.
00:20:22
Zach Sheets
Well, I guess, earth so Earth is also, now it's it's like one government. It's like the Federation or something. It's on a federated territories. With a Tiny Lister is our president, President Lindbergh.
00:20:37
Chris Prime
Awesome casting choice.
00:20:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:40
Chris Prime
I think it's it's cool that in the future there's a giant president that looks like if you had to fight him, he could hold his own.
00:20:49
Zach Sheets
like i'm gonna I'll go single-handedly take down these animals myself.
00:20:55
Chris Prime
And I believe it.
00:20:55
Zach Sheets
ah'll go I'll go fight Eva, punch her in the face.
00:20:58
Zach Sheets
yeah But yeah, we have but but have like we we have like an international we have like intergalactic navy. that like We have like battleships that are in space now, and like you know going out there and detecting things.
00:21:09
Zach Sheets
So, and i think they i think they try to blow up the evil with, like, nuclear... but like have Like, they have, like, nuclear missiles and doesn't do anything. so And it just makes it bigger. and then, like, one ship just gets, like the like, devoured and blown up by the by evil.
00:21:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, they they send like space warships, but it does nothing because the planet lurches forward, or it makes the the people inside go insane.
00:21:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah, the captain, like, is, like, oozing, like, black goo out of his head before he dies. And then think... like, like, pre like, Vito, uh, Priest Vito, like, Coralius, like, is, like, oh, any sort of, any sort of like, hateful action you take against it makes it stronger, so, like, we attacked it so that that's it's, like, feeding off of our hatred and, like, our, our like, desire to destroy it.
00:21:53
Chris Prime
So, I mean, you just can't hate it. You have to give it a hug or something.
00:21:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Transmit just, like, like, good vibes to it.
00:22:03
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so so but they're able to, from from like the wreckage, they're able to recover like a severed hand, at least like armored hand. And then Humanities has like has the technology to like rebuild whatever being that it belonged to, like completely. And then it turns out it's Mila Jovovich.
00:22:24
Zach Sheets
Like a perfect being.
00:22:26
Chris Prime
Yeah. I was thinking around this time Milo Jolovich is like the perfect being is not like freely walking around that ship.
00:22:37
Chris Prime
She for all we know has been like in that casket for forever.
00:22:43
Zach Sheets
Thousands of years. Yeah. Yeah.
00:22:46
Chris Prime
Because it doesn't seem like they drew her outside of that. Like, you know, like there's no depiction in the hyalographic that there's just like a woman. Yeah. then when you when they rebuild her you know when later when it crashes and they rebuild her that hand is huge compared to the rest of her so is it just like the limitations of human DNA 3D model printing or was that something that underneath that armor I guess
00:23:05
Zach Sheets
Yeah. notet
00:23:16
Zach Sheets
Yeah. have been funny if she had like that like a Hellboy style hand the entire time. Like, it's like...
00:23:20
Chris Prime
oh like one giant glove like metal hand yeah that'd be cool
00:23:22
Zach Sheets
Metal hand, yeah. Yeah,
00:23:25
Chris Prime
But i don't know. It seems like she's used to being human or some form of human.
00:23:33
Zach Sheets
yeah because we don't we we yeah because we don't we don't see... like a I guess, like, 5,000 years prior to this, like, she like, repel, like, obviously repelled evil because it came back. But we have no, we just have, like, one hyaluronic effect to, like, kind explain what happened at that time.
00:23:52
Zach Sheets
And also, like, the, there's, like, a book of illustrations that will show you, like, the story, too, that, like, Vito has. Like, here's here's the book of all drawings, like, storybook that explains, like, the the plot the movie.
00:24:07
Chris Prime
Yeah, that that's, like, helpful for just moving it along without introducing more characters. But they could have. They could have consulted the Musharians again and asked them, like, hey, can you send a rep to explain this?
00:24:22
Chris Prime
I guess the priest in the last 300 years has just been documenting everything. Like, manually.
00:24:28
Zach Sheets
Or yeah, what but the the order, the secret order has been doing it.
00:24:32
Chris Prime
There's no seeker, there's no name.
00:24:36
Zach Sheets
Yeah, they should have had like a, some sort of like, something something with elements something, like the elementals or something, or
00:24:41
Chris Prime
Well, that's cool.
00:24:43
Zach Sheets
or something like Latin that means like element or something. But it's like him and then like he has like an assistant. And then those are there's like two guys in this order, apparently.
00:24:53
Chris Prime
Well, don't know that's the order of just the New York branch.
00:24:57
Chris Prime
Because it might be an order in Cairo?
00:25:05
Zach Sheets
Well, they're they're in New York. they yeah they're so but we don't see only We don't see any other members of the group. like They don't get help from any other... like It's like, oh, hey, I'm also with the Order. like i I was here to help you.
00:25:17
Chris Prime
Yeah, no, I understand. I get that. But it it would make sense that it's like each section is kind of isolated so they can kind of operate better.
00:25:26
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:25:26
Chris Prime
But yeah, we don't get we don't get any buildup on what the order is or about besides you know attacking archaeologists.
00:25:40
Zach Sheets
And also, like, like like the Manda Challenger also just like, oh, like, they don't really, like, like offer up any more help. They're just like, oh, you got you got the fifth element? Okay, like, take care of that. then we also gave the stones, like, a courier. So we're done. Like, good luck.
00:25:57
Chris Prime
Yeah, it doesn't seem like they really want to get more involved besides moving things around.
00:26:04
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so Milo Jovic's Li Lu gets reformed. And we we with the classic, like, she's in like that like bandage outfit and just jumps out of the building.
00:26:15
Zach Sheets
just Like that that, like, leave off the building shot is like like but one of the most iconic shots from this from the movie.
00:26:20
Chris Prime
So yeah the bandage outfit is just restraints.
00:26:25
Zach Sheets
they They call them thermal bandages.
00:26:28
Zach Sheets
which I don't know, I guess it's to protect from, like, heat or something.
00:26:34
Zach Sheets
It's also crazy that in like, that regeneration chamber, they rebuild, like, her skeletal structure and muscles, but then it's like, oh, and then we're we blast it with UV that it forces to forces it to make skin.
00:26:46
Zach Sheets
i don't think...
00:26:46
Chris Prime
I mean, I don't know if that's what...
00:26:48
Zach Sheets
Yeah, I don't think that's how that works. I think it would like, burn the muscle.
00:26:52
Chris Prime
But it could be... Skin is natural UV protection towards the internal organs, but I mean, technically not anymore these days, just because how strong UV rays can penetrate.
00:27:01
Zach Sheets
yeah
00:27:03
Chris Prime
But I'm not gonna... I'm not gonna fault that, because it's already fantasy technology.
00:27:10
Zach Sheets
They're 3D printing a person.
00:27:14
Zach Sheets
they come up with 3D printing for like that could be like like thing? they're building her like layer like they're like self just they ain't building like layers. basically a giant three d printer
00:27:26
Chris Prime
I don't understand why they couldn't print more of her from that. Because I don't think... Like, the hand is still alive, right? Or the DNA. Like, you just copied that. You didn't have to, like, lose the whole hand.
00:27:41
Zach Sheets
they Yeah, they they got DNA off of the the hand, and they just used it to rebuild whatever that whatever it was that was but had like had that DNA. Which turned out... people i Yeah, i guess they they got they they could have gone full Resident Evil, probably. They just made like an army of leaders.
00:27:57
Chris Prime
Yeah, just whole sent a whole bunch of Lulus fight that planet.
00:28:00
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:28:02
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but she does her leap then she ends up in the cab of Corbin Dallas, Bruce Willis.
00:28:09
Zach Sheets
Who is like, he has like, he has like, like barely any he like credits left his license. Like he has like, like a couple of points left. And then we get, we get the whole thing about like the cops. Like there's like the cops are chasing them, which,
00:28:27
Zach Sheets
The cop outfits are aren't insane. like
00:28:30
Chris Prime
They feel like a parody of Judge Dredd outfits.
00:28:33
Zach Sheets
was i think judge Was Judge Red the same year as this? and feel like it it was if it wasn't, it was like close.
00:28:38
Chris Prime
No, Judge O was earlier. Like, 94.
00:28:42
Zach Sheets
Oh, 95 was Judge Red.
00:28:44
Chris Prime
But, I think based on the the comic more.
00:28:45
Zach Sheets
But that also...
00:28:48
Chris Prime
But, like, more insane bulk.
00:28:48
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:28:51
Zach Sheets
But that also had like, was it Versace designed the the costumes for that movie?
00:28:55
Chris Prime
Did it actually design this?
00:28:57
Zach Sheets
I think it was Jean-Paul Gaultier, who's also like like a very like famous like fashion designer. like He designed all the like the costumes and stuff for this movie.
00:29:09
Zach Sheets
But it's but it's it yeah it's it's all like very elaborate, bulky, like crazy outfits.
00:29:17
Zach Sheets
And you else we also get to see the New York City's basically Coruscant from Star Wars, where it's like this like vertical city now.
00:29:22
Chris Prime
Well, it's pre-Chorasan.
00:29:25
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:29:26
Chris Prime
The fact that now we think yeah we think that any time we see a giant city that is just clustered, we think Coruscant, but...
00:29:35
Zach Sheets
I mean, probably was his Blade Runner would be like the...
00:29:37
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's definitely closer to Blade Runner, but this is...
00:29:38
Zach Sheets
at the time, it would be like, oh, this is like it's like this is Blade Runner.
00:29:45
Chris Prime
I mean, it's... it's I think... if anything closer it fifth element. I mean, uh, Futurama copied more of this world.
00:29:57
Zach Sheets
there's no tubes though in the hotel but that would that would have been people were like shooting around in tubes i mean there's like there's mail tubes where you get your mail like sent to you
00:30:08
Zach Sheets
but yeah like it's yeah it's all it's all hover cars it like hover like hover mcdonald's Which, I'm trying to remember, what was like what was like McDonald's tie-in to this? Because there had to be one like such a blatant like McDonald's tie-in promo in the movie.
00:30:29
Chris Prime
I don't know. feel like there would have been a Fifth Element sauce or something.
00:30:33
Chris Prime
does Does McDonald's know they were in this movie? Because...
00:30:37
Zach Sheets
There's like, oh, we we don't care about French movies.
00:30:42
Chris Prime
when I went to France, I went to McDonald's. And they're fine. they They're just like any other McDonald's that you'd go to in America, but way better service.
00:30:54
Chris Prime
And they they serve a lot of their stuff in reusable like containers, so you just don't get a lot of paper products.
00:31:01
Zach Sheets
I guess it wasn't it wasn't a direct like McDonald's didn't pay them it wasn't like direct marketing for McDonald's they just like threw it in there I guess
00:31:08
Chris Prime
have free marketing from them.
00:31:10
Zach Sheets
hmm
00:31:11
Chris Prime
But it's one of those things where this the product placement is not the plot. you know, McDonald's was in the fifth element.
00:31:21
Zach Sheets
like like the power range Like the new Power Rangers movie where it's like Krispy Kreme. Like the power source in the middle of the Krispy Kreme.
00:31:28
Chris Prime
It's not that. Simon, like, was it like Papa John's and the Nathan Drake movie?
00:31:32
Zach Sheets
super yeah Yeah, where it's like it's like these ancient ruins. It's like Papa John's though.
00:31:39
Zach Sheets
they should have like yeah They should have hid the stones in McDonald's.
00:31:44
Chris Prime
And then, uh...
00:31:44
Zach Sheets
It's like the mother's challenge where no one look at McDonald's.
00:31:47
Chris Prime
And I think even the main characters don't eat the McDonald's, so it's like, it borderlines on that. I feel like if McDonald's did pay, then Corbin Dallas would have gave Leigh-Lou like a Big Mac. And she's like, oh, like, this is the food of the gods.
00:32:03
Zach Sheets
Yeah, she's eating like microwaved. It appears to be some sort of like it's oh it's it's like a back like Back to the Future 2 style thing where you like you put it in like a
00:32:09
Chris Prime
Kill. Kill.
00:32:15
Zach Sheets
like a rehydrator or some sort of like thing. it's like you put you shake, she's she's like shakes stuff into a bowl and it makes like a giant, like chicken dinner, like all these like chickens, other like side dishes up appear in a bowl.
00:32:28
Chris Prime
Now, the thing is, if it's if like food like that exists, why do you need more fast food?
00:32:35
Zach Sheets
hmm.
00:32:36
Chris Prime
the The chicken dinner is a fat like an insane fast food thing already.
00:32:43
Zach Sheets
I'm surprised that wasn't KFC. Like, it's like they have McDonald's on like instant KFC.
00:32:50
Zach Sheets
But yeah, it's it's just like a you shake a shake a shaker into a bowl and you get like tons of chicken.
00:32:56
Chris Prime
It would have been different if she just ate Then it's like, oh, you ate like three dinners.
00:33:04
Zach Sheets
But yeah, there's like there's a huge like hover car chase action sequence where like... Because Corbin's like, well, I i can't help you. like i get my i get I need to get my license. I have one point left. And then the cutting the the cops are pulling him over. and then he's She's like, she somehow realized like please help is a way to like get him to help.
00:33:23
Zach Sheets
Because she's talking in like to the like ancient divine language. like He has no idea what she's saying. Then she like realizes, like oh, please help is something I should say.
00:33:32
Chris Prime
Well, she learned it from a sign, which, thank God it was one of those like donation ones and not just like a zit doctor one.
00:33:34
Zach Sheets
No.
00:33:41
Zach Sheets
who
00:33:42
Chris Prime
I can't tell. i've seen so and i When I lived in New York, taking public transportation, there was a a few famous lawyers and and just like pimple doctors.
00:33:54
Chris Prime
think one of them was called Dr. Zitzmore.
00:33:57
Chris Prime
not sure if you've ever seen those ads, but yeah, it's just like a smiling older gentleman, and he's just like, I'll help your skin.
00:33:59
Zach Sheets
no
00:34:03
Chris Prime
It's like, is your real name Dr. Zitzmor? Is it just like a Destiny thing? What's going on here?
00:34:10
Chris Prime
Or like 1-800-COLLECT. You know, like, I thought they were going to go to those, because this is like the
00:34:17
Zach Sheets
yeah what would it would have been funny if it was like uh some like you know like just commercial like slogan or jingle or something and like she's like reading this like uh
00:34:28
Chris Prime
one of your cars for kids.
00:34:29
Zach Sheets
mcdowell's yeah i'm loving it
00:34:34
Chris Prime
See? That's what the McDonald's thing is. She gives him McDonald's.
00:34:38
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but she says, please help. And then, i mean, bru Bruce, like, Corbin's kind of like, kind of get like, he's kind of a romantic because he's just like, when he's talking on the phone to like his friend before he goes out and like in his cab, he's just like, I just want to find a i so i find the perfect woman. Like, he's like, he's like still like, like depressed from like his wife leaving him.
00:34:57
Zach Sheets
And it's like the perfect woman drops into his cab. How convenient.
00:35:01
Chris Prime
He manifested this whole problem.
00:35:03
Zach Sheets
Mm hmm.
00:35:05
Chris Prime
And the thing is, he's not even aware about the death planet coming. It's sort of...
00:35:11
Zach Sheets
Yeah, nobody is, yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:35:12
Chris Prime
Nobody is, but it's not like his whole hang-up in his happiness and his career has been a woman, but it seems like it went in that direction, right?
00:35:23
Chris Prime
just like Just because he's heartbroken, he decided to drive to drive a cab in the hopes to meet a woman?
00:35:32
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there's a lot of like... it's like how did he How did he end up in like his like situation? but he He was like like a top-tier special forces fighter pilot who quit the military and then got like, and don't know if like the military like ended his marriage, like he was like too involved in the military and and his his marriage or whatever happened. But then like his but his wife left them.
00:35:55
Zach Sheets
I think, i think it's his wife left him for his, like his wife's lawyer. Like, it's like, I got a, i got a letter from my life saying like, she left me. And then like my lawyer, my lawyer saying he he left me for her.
00:36:07
Chris Prime
Double whammy.
00:36:13
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:36:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, again, there's there's a a big, big version of this movie where Corbin's the bad guy. There's enough of him to have his own villain origin of just taking the ultimate power and then just getting revenge.
00:36:32
Zach Sheets
but yeah But yeah, luckily he's just like a a a great, like every man, like dude who just wants to like do the right thing.
00:36:39
Chris Prime
He just wants to fall in love.
00:36:40
Zach Sheets
Eventually. Yeah.
00:36:41
Chris Prime
he he He did try to kiss an unconscious woman, though.
00:36:44
Zach Sheets
Yeah. When she learns his lesson, he doesn't do that again.
00:36:49
Chris Prime
You had to get a gun pulled on him to learn not to do that.
00:36:54
Zach Sheets
Yeah, but he drops Lilo off to Vito, who instantly knows who she is, and then what they gotta do, they gotta get her to the stones, and Lilo knows that the stones are not the ship that she was on. They got sent to a different ship. They got sent the diva Plava Laguna, who's like an opera singer, and she's gonna bring them to this hotel ship,
00:37:20
Zach Sheets
this hotel ship
00:37:23
Chris Prime
Which, okay, so before we get that far, it's not explained how Leeloo knows this. Because it seems like she's been in cryosleep for a long time. And then she knows that,
00:37:37
Chris Prime
like, she had to go to Earth. But did they wake her up and tell her that and then go back to sleep?
00:37:43
Zach Sheets
Yeah, does she just wander around? the amount of Shonin just wander around there like, oh, well, we're traveling, get your sarcophagus. We'll pull you out when we get there.
00:37:55
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's the part where I just wish there was like a glimmer of her early. Just something to just even like the hand, you know, like they show the hand like kind of walk around the ship or sort of you follow the hand trail.
00:38:08
Chris Prime
And then the incident happens where the ship crashes. And then it's like the big reveal that like, who does this hand belong to?
00:38:15
Zach Sheets
I guess they wanted to save like the reveal of Milojovich for like that scene where recreate her and everyone's like, oh my god, it's a woman.
00:38:22
Chris Prime
But I don't know. if The marketing at the time, I remember the trailer correctly, they just kind of like the fifth element. Who is it? It's like, well, this woman. And then it's like, all right, well, there's the mystique about it.
00:38:29
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm. yeah They could have they couldt have a scene of like when the Montechoans are getting attacked. like Have them like... like whatever whatever they Whatever they would call her. like get it Get in the get a sarcophagus for your safety. like we're getting We're going down. like because even like even like in like in in ancient Egypt, it seems like she's just like if she's it's in the it's like in the temple. like They pull out of like this like chamber.
00:38:58
Zach Sheets
she was just like in there for like thousands of years
00:39:02
Zach Sheets
so i yeah so I guess she's like immortal or two or not possibly yeah mmhmm
00:39:05
Chris Prime
Or does the casket make her immortal?
00:39:09
Chris Prime
They don't really explain it, but it's not really important because the casket is just sort of secondary in the end. I don't want spoil it yet, but like she doesn't even need the casket by the end of the movie.
00:39:21
Zach Sheets
no that's yeah just It just seems like like it's just like contain her protect her until they need her like to like unleash her powers or something.
00:39:31
Zach Sheets
But there's there's a whole... I like the whole this the the whole crazy section where like multiple there's like multiple plans get sprung into action. Because like... like like a bunch of different people like figure out like where the stones are going to be. like Gary Oldman's Zorg figures out where they're going to and the the military figures out where going and Lilo knows where they're to be, so Vito knows.
00:39:54
Zach Sheets
And then it's this whole thing of the like the military rigs like this contest that like Corbin Dallas is like the winner of like this... There's like a oh its like monthly or like it's some sort of like like regular regular scheduled contest where like they you had to you get the a trip to like this hotel planet or like ship that they need to get and then then they announce it on i guess the radio i guess it's I assume it's probably like Ruby Rod's show
00:40:25
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like his... Well, he's like the number one radio DJ guy.
00:40:28
Zach Sheets
yeah So they announce like, oh, like Corbin Dallas is the winner of this contest. And then Zorch's like, oh, I'm going to my guy to pretend to be like Corbin Dallas. And then the Mangalores, the mercenaries, who we find out can like shapeshift into humans if they want to.
00:40:46
Zach Sheets
So they like send two of them to be like pretend to be Corbin Dallas.
00:40:52
Chris Prime
But they look nothing like Corbin.
00:40:52
Zach Sheets
But then. No, yeah.
00:40:56
Chris Prime
I guess they didn't know what he looks like either.
00:40:58
Zach Sheets
i would yeah I guess no one knows. It's all radio. The main form of like entertainment in the future is radio, so no one knows what anyone looks like, I guess.
00:41:07
Chris Prime
How lucky is that? That somewhere in the future we get rid of like video and it's all audio.
00:41:12
Zach Sheets
I mean, there is TV, but it's like so insanely tiny. It's like... Corbin has like a TV by his door, and it's like...
00:41:24
Zach Sheets
i like the size of like a, like a graphing calculator screen or something. It's like so tiny.
00:41:28
Chris Prime
I thought that was a monitor to the hallway.
00:41:31
Zach Sheets
I think it is. think it's that too, but think it's also like a TV because like his cat is like watching it. It's like some sort like that's on.
00:41:36
Chris Prime
Oh.
00:41:37
Zach Sheets
Cause he's like, he's like, Hey, sweetie, don't watch it all going to bring your brain out or something.
00:41:38
Chris Prime
Yeah, right.
00:41:42
Chris Prime
That cat looked a little like stone for a cat.
00:41:44
Zach Sheets
yeah yeah
00:41:47
Zach Sheets
But there's this whole, like, like a multiple people show up at, like, the spaceport to, like, try to get on the ship.
00:41:55
Chris Prime
Great comedy bit. It shows you that this is just one of many stories going on in this area. And for an airport, it looks terrible just because of like i guess like a strike. Like a garbage strike and a luggage strike. Or like an airport strike.
00:42:15
Zach Sheets
Yeah, so something has caused like like a giant pile of garbage just be sitting like behind everybody.
00:42:21
Chris Prime
I think that has to do with Zorg's firing.
00:42:23
Zach Sheets
oh yeah.
00:42:25
Chris Prime
Because he owns so much business that in order to... like he He kind of has so many hands in different industries. So it makes sense that his firing is just part of the like the fallout of everyone. like That should have been the running theme. I think it stopped at some point.
00:42:42
Chris Prime
No one really comments that there's a million Zorg people that got left laid off. So...
00:42:47
Zach Sheets
yet Yeah, there could there could have been a lot more like, yeah, like everything is everything Zorg. Like everything is like Zorg branded. and it's And it's like just progressively worse or like it starts breaking down or something.
00:42:55
Chris Prime
Yeah. It's just like no one's there to maintenance it. That's like the point of what Zorn brings up where it's like, okay, well, it's progress, destruction, but like no one's there to fix it or save him.
00:43:06
Chris Prime
And that's why the priest was there to like slap him to get the cherry out of his mouth.
00:43:10
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. We forgot to look that scene. Yeah. Like, yeah.
00:43:11
Chris Prime
it's It's a minor scene, but it's funny.
00:43:13
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:43:15
Chris Prime
But I bring that up because that could have been the other like effect where the firing on these people and now it's like, okay, well, who's saving them? You know, it just... It's going to get progressively worse as the movie goes on.
00:43:27
Zach Sheets
Well, eventually, zo or has to be like, well, going to do it myself. like like i I blew up my one guy. i guess I got to handle things myself because I'm only one that can get it done. It's like he takes it by himself to like go to the Flostan, was it the Flostan Paradise or something?
00:43:44
Zach Sheets
Flostan.
00:43:48
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:43:50
Chris Prime
The cruise is just above the island, which is the whole planet of that.
00:43:56
Zach Sheets
it's a yeah it's It's like a tropical like beach planet. Oh, we've speaking of Zororik stuff, like we we also forgot to mention probably one of one one of the best scenes. It's like when he... The Mangalore is bringing him like the case and it's empty, but then it's like the weapons deal and he shows off like the ZF-1, one of the craziest guns in movie history.
00:44:17
Chris Prime
It seems cool, but it it also has like so many other problems that goes on on that gun.
00:44:23
Zach Sheets
what's it it's got It's got a machine gun that has the the recall feature, which doesn't get used at all. like It shows off what in the scene, and then no one uses it in the movie.
00:44:36
Zach Sheets
Where you you shoot one bullet, and then you can shoot all every other bullet you shoot they can like get traced to that spot. Yeah. And then got rocket launchers, a flamethrower, like a net,
00:44:47
Zach Sheets
a like poison tipped arrows, like a freeze freezing gas.
00:44:56
Zach Sheets
And then that's what he's got. He's he's up pain he's paying the Mangalores in those cause they're like a warrior race. they All they want is like weapons and conquest and everything. But then they didn't bring him stone, so he blows them all up. There's like a secret button on the on the gun that like if you press it, it blows them but it blows up.
00:45:10
Zach Sheets
It's like a nuclear bomb, or like just like a bomb, and it blows up everything.
00:45:14
Chris Prime
Yeah, I don't know why that gun has an easy self-destruct button.
00:45:18
Zach Sheets
button that's easy to press.
00:45:20
Chris Prime
Yeah, like comically easy.
00:45:23
Zach Sheets
But also, apparently it doesn't kill them, because all but all those guys show up on like the ship later, and they're still alive.
00:45:29
Chris Prime
Well, don't know if that's the same. One of them is the same, yes, but I don't know if like all of them survived.
00:45:33
Zach Sheets
their lead The leader guy, is like he was in the explosion, but he's he's like back. like He's all cut up and everything.
00:45:38
Chris Prime
Yeah, he's got like a scratch on his head.
00:45:39
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:45:42
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but yeah corp so Corbin and Lilo are on this cruise ship. And o we Ruby Rod, Chris Tucker, who just like sweeps at this movie like like like a hurricane and just like starts like just like going taking things to the next level.
00:45:58
Zach Sheets
Which I feel like it's either like, this is the point, if you get to this point, this is like, think people are bored with movie Like, if you're like, like if
00:46:06
Chris Prime
Yeah, you have to commit to now this other character who's gonna eat chew the scene scenery.
00:46:09
Zach Sheets
this this this insane character now like this like a side it's like who's supposed to sidekick now and yeah I guess like I think they wanted Prince to play that but then he said no but then Chris Tucker
00:46:25
Chris Prime
Well, they probably told over what extent they want him to be. And he's like, I am not a caricature.
00:46:31
Zach Sheets
hmm
00:46:33
Chris Prime
But Chris Tucker was like, yes.
00:46:35
Zach Sheets
i'll do I'll do a Prince impression. Like, i like like Prince, mis like, Michael Jackson is what I think he said.
00:46:41
Chris Prime
I could see that. But unlike Michael Jackson, this is like, you are just, if you're a woman within, i don't know, 10 feet, he's going to rub up against you.
00:46:53
Zach Sheets
What's the crazy part? is like he's like He dresses like so flamboyantly that you think like maybe he's gay, but then he is an insane womanizer and likes like is like fucking everything that moves a female in front of him.
00:47:04
Chris Prime
But here's the thing. We don't know in the future that's like really manly. you know like It's gotten so like futuristic where you want a guy that's squeaky and loud and and like flamboyant. and That's just like masculine now. you know like how like in That was the way back in 17th century France.
00:47:25
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:47:25
Chris Prime
So it makes sense that this is the Luc Besson future where it's like, oh no, it's gone back to the foppy. We're back to foppy fashion again.
00:47:32
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:47:34
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but he's got he's he's like yeah we like him be don like he's out a radio show, so he's broadcasting from like the ship, and he's got like a crazy microphone that he can play back stuff and like do effects on And yeah, he is like he's the was like like most famous celebrity in the world, I guess. like Everyone knows who he is and wants his autograph and wants to be on his show.
00:47:56
Chris Prime
Yeah, everyone's like everyone's like, oh my god, Ruby, I love him.
00:47:56
Zach Sheets
Except...
00:47:58
Chris Prime
It's gonna be so cool. Oh my god, it's great. just like, this guy's loud and like, putting microphones in your face.
00:48:05
Zach Sheets
I love the gag where there's like the like the whole like group of like one of his autograph and he just like dips like a paintbrush in red paint just like drags it across his photos. Doesn't even sign them.
00:48:14
Chris Prime
Oh, like his groupie of like, young Japanese girls.
00:48:16
Zach Sheets
Yep. Yep.
00:48:19
Zach Sheets
and and like And then the only person who's like not into it, like it is not doesn't care at all, as like is Corbin. He's just giving them like one word answers. Are you excited to be here, Corbin? He's like, yes.
00:48:31
Zach Sheets
He's like, all right.
00:48:34
Chris Prime
Well, depends on the the group, but yeah, that's like an average like introvert, nerd, answer a question on like a hot take.
00:48:45
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he does use a time he has a time for this. He has a time for this nonsense.
00:48:48
Chris Prime
I mean, for a man who didn't want to be on this, that's like the other thing. Corbin's not exactly like thrilled to be on this mission.
00:48:57
Zach Sheets
And he has like, it's like the fate of the universe is like on his shoulders now. Like he knows like like the whole like stakes of what's going on.
00:49:04
Chris Prime
And he just wants to impress Lelu, who I think up this point, he's not even sure she's going yet.
00:49:10
Zach Sheets
Well, he, like, the original plan was, like, that, like, David, like, Vito's assistant was going to, like, be trying to be Lilo's husband. And they were going to be, like, he was going to be trying to be Corbin and use, like, the prize to get on the ship.
00:49:25
Zach Sheets
And then, yeah, take his tickets.
00:49:25
Chris Prime
Right, because they they hit him and then they take him. Okay, yeah.
00:49:28
Zach Sheets
And then Corbin shows up like, hey, I'm here. sent him, to like, just in case I was late, but I'm here now.
00:49:35
Chris Prime
Like how they're like, yeah, we believe this. Whatever. yeah There's no like double verification, future verification.
00:49:42
Zach Sheets
but then like But then Vito stows away like in like the like under the under the ship like the landing gear of the ship. And like apparently I just like traveled in like the wiring all the way to Floston. And then they then they like find him and like arrest him.
00:49:58
Chris Prime
Well, he's a stowaway.
00:49:59
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:50:00
Chris Prime
It's crew's law that you do not treat the stowaway like a guess.
00:50:06
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
00:50:08
Zach Sheets
But then we get the... Probably the biggest thing that I have to... is like the scene with like the Divas performance.
00:50:15
Chris Prime
That's a big landmark scene. Just because it's very well shot, it it has that
00:50:17
Zach Sheets
Yes.
00:50:24
Chris Prime
future vision of Luc Bessant was coming for, where there's a mix of eventually like space opera is going to reach like a very new level. And aliens are going to want to speak classic, I guess, like Italian.
00:50:41
Zach Sheets
Well, it's an actual... It's an actual it's like Inva Mola is the singing voice. She's like an actual opera soprano. And then it's Maiwen, who's like a...
00:50:54
Chris Prime
Luc Besson's previous wife.
00:50:55
Zach Sheets
Musan's wife at the time.
00:50:56
Chris Prime
Yeah.
00:50:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah, was it was play like was like the diva lip-syncing.
00:51:01
Chris Prime
She did pretty good job convincing.
00:51:03
Zach Sheets
and But yeah I can't figure out... but I mean, I'm... like I can't figure out if the score... like if her If her performance it starts out as like normal opera and then turns into techno opera, or if it's just like the score is intercutting... and like It's not diegetic to the scene. It's just like, we're hearing techno score, but way everyone else is hearing just like still opera still.
00:51:24
Zach Sheets
Because it starts out, and it's just is like you know like normal opera, but then when like the Mangalores show up and they start like taking over the ship, they you get like the like the like more like techno.
00:51:32
Chris Prime
techno breakdown?
00:51:33
Zach Sheets
like and then But then like the Diva's dancing to like the techno while she's singing, too. So it's like, are people hearing like this is like like this like remix of opera now?
00:51:46
Chris Prime
I think it is. I think that's like the point of it is that it's 300 years so even that techno breakdown could still be classical to them.
00:51:56
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because the part where the diva is like almost scatting or something, she's like it like like like going along with the music and stuff. yeah they i I guess it is like there like i think here everyone's hearing like this like, oh, now this like other like this backbeat kicked in She's singing to it.
00:52:11
Zach Sheets
I guess Bruce Willis never heard, like they didn't tell him what was going to happen or like what what he was going hear before that scene. like His reaction is like, it's like real.
00:52:19
Zach Sheets
He's like, oh, shit, it's like this like actual opera singer. Okay.
00:52:23
Chris Prime
Yeah, like, he's never looked her up of who the singer is. Because he's surprised who this person is, but she's world famous or galactic famous.
00:52:33
Zach Sheets
It seems like it, yeah.
00:52:35
Chris Prime
But there's, like, no photos of her. Like, the diva.
00:52:40
Zach Sheets
To Corman Dales, it doesn't seem like he's like an opera guy. don't he's listening to opera in his apartment.
00:52:44
Chris Prime
That's true. Maybe that's why he just is like seeing it for the first time just because he literally is so like not worldly like that.
00:52:54
Zach Sheets
But, like it like like no like like, in, like, behind the scenes, like, Bruce Willis, like, didn't... Like, he didn't have any idea what was going happen in that scene.
00:53:01
Chris Prime
Oh, so that's real authentic shock.
00:53:03
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
00:53:05
Chris Prime
That makes sense then.
00:53:08
Zach Sheets
but Yeah, but then, I think, like, we mentioned before, like... earlier, like, then this it basically turns into, like, a mini Die Hard, because, like, the Megalors take over the ship. So now it's, like, Terrace has taken over a cruise ship, and then John McClane, aka Corbin Dallas, has to stop them.
00:53:24
Zach Sheets
and and I mean, he starts out with, like, Lidlou fighting them, but then she gets, like, uh, ends up in air duct, very, like, Die Hard style, but then she gets shot by, uh, Zorg, because he comes in with like, his, like, ZF-1, like, his and then looking for the stones himself.
00:53:41
Chris Prime
Again, for a guy that is in charge of so many things, he he's just like, I'll do it myself, which is pretty cool. like
00:53:49
Zach Sheets
I mean, he probably blew up... either blew up or fired everyone else that could have done it for him. So he's probably just like, well, there's no one else.
00:53:54
Chris Prime
No choice.
00:53:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:53:55
Chris Prime
Yeah, that just makes sense, then.
00:53:55
Zach Sheets
And
00:53:58
Zach Sheets
then he plants a time bomb, which, you know, a literal ticking clock for like the the act action. like They add attention to it. Yeah, then it's like a big, crazy shootout in like the opera theater and then like outside the theater, and like the lounge area.
00:54:17
Zach Sheets
we get We get some like cool like Bruce Willis... Full like Bruce Willis action hero mode. I don't think we've really gotten like to this point. like He was like driving on his cab and stuff, but... This this is him, like just like full like John McClane mode.
00:54:35
Zach Sheets
like like Blasting away like these like these like muppet these like puppet aliens.
00:54:39
Chris Prime
And I do like that he uses weaponry that sort of resembles modern weaponry. Because I know in the beginning, there could have been that... There was that dumb, like, space gun that had spikes at the end that he had held up at by, like, the hallway intruder.
00:54:56
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah. The guy who pasted a photo of the hallway on his head. looks like when he was with the camera, it looks like there's no one in the hallway.
00:55:05
Chris Prime
i don't know if that guy is, like, a famous comedian in France. You know, it seems like one of those actors that is like country local, like everyone's like, oh, there he is. But it doesn't translate internationally.
00:55:20
Chris Prime
it was a good one bit role. Don't get me wrong. i I just imagined the shock of like, oh, it's that guy, that comedian.
00:55:28
Zach Sheets
And then Corbin's got like a like a like a a column full of guns in his apartment that he doesn't bring any of them, except for like he's got he's got his like trusty pistol he brings. like That's about the only gun he has likeck the entire movie.
00:55:41
Chris Prime
Did you ever play the fifth element video game?
00:55:44
Zach Sheets
Was it like a PS1 game or something?
00:55:46
Chris Prime
PS1.
00:55:47
Zach Sheets
I've seen it. I've never played it.
00:55:49
Chris Prime
So you basically use that pistol for everything. The only time you really punch and kick is just Leeloo.
00:55:57
Zach Sheets
I remember there was a Flash game that I played a lot that was like a fifth element. That was basically this scene. but it was like a it was like you just clicked and it was like kind of a shootout game where you were shooting like the Mangalores in this scene.
00:56:10
Zach Sheets
I don't know if... i don't think I'm trying to remember if it was like unlike their official site or if it was a Newgrounds thing or something, but I i just remember like the like the Fifth Element Flash game. Because it was like it was like very... like The graphics were like, oh, for a Flash game, this is actually like pretty awesome. like it feels it's like It's like actually... like It looks like the Mangalore's from the movie.
00:56:29
Zach Sheets
i'm sure I'm sure it's like gone. like Like Lost Media now, there's no way to play that. It's...
00:56:34
Chris Prime
Yeah, so whoever has the source code, they like burned it down already.
00:56:34
Zach Sheets
Flash is dead, so yeah.
00:56:41
Zach Sheets
but Yeah, lots of cool stuff. I do love that the mandelo Mangalores are all like practical Muppets, basically. like It's like guys in rubber suits.
00:56:52
Zach Sheets
But with like really expressive faces, like they're like they're like the mouth movement and stuff is like really really good on them.
00:56:57
Zach Sheets
And then, yeah, lots lots lots of, like, Corbin gets, like, that grenade that, like, like that spiky grenade that uses to, like, blow up, like, a bunch of, like, the Mangalores. And he just, like, like he shoots out, like, the, like, ground around Rue Rod, like, dropping down next at our level to
00:57:15
Chris Prime
Yeah, that's where, like, this is where the fifth element, I mean, where Die Hard would have been crazier if they just went in this direction, where John McClane is doing demolition work with weaponry.
00:57:28
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Like, slightly more cartoonish.
00:57:34
Zach Sheets
and then, like...
00:57:34
Chris Prime
And even the, way before we get to that part, the the boat is full of just, like, so many interesting characters. There's like the shore men who for some reason are still dressed like sailors, even though it's space.
00:57:41
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
00:57:47
Zach Sheets
Yes, like like old school, like like like Titanic crewmen.
00:57:50
Chris Prime
Yeah. There are guests that are just futuristically like retro. they They've like what there's a Victorian boxer guy that is dressed like a dante.
00:58:03
Zach Sheets
A dandy, yeah.
00:58:04
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like.
00:58:05
Zach Sheets
is that is that Is that the deaf guy? Mm-hmm.
00:58:07
Chris Prime
That's the death guy, but like that's because he used to be a boxer. Now we can't hear well. Yep.
00:58:12
Zach Sheets
Yeah, there's there's there's a funny bit where, like, Corbin's like, give me the gun! Give me the gun, man! And then he gives him, like, pool balls, I think. He's like, I did good! And then what what it's like, there's an ambassador from, so like, is it Japan or china like so like some Asian country?
00:58:29
Zach Sheets
And then it's like Ruby Rod had sex with the daughter that plays like play sounds from it.
00:58:34
Chris Prime
the like sex tape that I'm pretty sure the daughter didn't consent to.
00:58:35
Zach Sheets
Yeah. me It's like the microphone's always recording.
00:58:43
Chris Prime
You know how it is, Ruby.
00:58:45
Zach Sheets
And Ruby Rod is nearing this entire sequence too. It's like an old school 1920s. He's describing it like a radio show everyone at home.
00:58:53
Chris Prime
Yeah, came back are they being filmed during that? Like, Ruby just confessing to like crimes while on a hot mic?
00:59:00
Zach Sheets
don't think he's being filmed. think he's like, yeah, he's like trying to describe it because it's a radio show. he's easy He has to describe it like his audience back home. Like what's happening.
00:59:09
Zach Sheets
And then i love when they, they end up in like, like, take They take out ton of the Mangalores, but then a bunch of them are holed up in this one room, and the crew members are like are like trying to negotiate with them.
00:59:21
Zach Sheets
And then Korber shows up like, I'll negotiate with them. And then shoots the leader in the head, and that like ends it because they don't fight if their leader's dead. he just like pops in and shoots them. Like, oh, the hostage race is done now.
00:59:35
Zach Sheets
And then it's like Ruby Rod, Vito, Leeloo, and Corbin end up on like a... It didn't seem like an escape pod. It seemed like they had like a fighter ship or some sort of ship on the cruise ship that they took.
00:59:50
Zach Sheets
Because other people...
00:59:50
Chris Prime
Well, the ship they took they took was Zerg's.
00:59:54
Zach Sheets
Oh, okay, yeah. Yeah, that makes sense then.
00:59:55
Chris Prime
You missed that part?
00:59:58
Zach Sheets
I didn't hear that like it it was like a like sort Zorg ship or like the Mandalore ship or something.
01:00:03
Chris Prime
No, I think that's like Zerg's personal ship that he used, but it could be the same design as the Mandalore, because I see the nut is the Mangalore.
01:00:14
Zach Sheets
Mangalores, yeah.
01:00:15
Chris Prime
So the Mangalores, I think they're just like very scavenger-y. So it's sort of the fighter ships that probably Zorg produce because he produces everything.
01:00:26
Zach Sheets
Yeah, he sold them those ships, yeah.
01:00:30
Chris Prime
So yeah, yeah. like It'd be funny if that that's more excuse. like just Zorg's like, alright, I fired everybody. I fired my like pilot. I fired like my my entourage of sexy server men.
01:00:43
Chris Prime
Like, he he had he had, like, the...
01:00:44
Zach Sheets
like like but He liked biker guys.
01:00:45
Chris Prime
Wait, wait, wait, wait. He had, but, like, he had, like, Devo. Like, he basically had these guys wearing, like, dumb space hats. And then in, like, tight, yeah like, weird future biker German outfits.
01:00:57
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like like Jack Devo.
01:00:59
Chris Prime
And then you don't see him anymore.
01:01:03
Chris Prime
I know he blew up the guy from, like...
01:01:07
Chris Prime
He's, like, a singer. the The guy that he actually blows up.
01:01:10
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:01:11
Chris Prime
You know which band?
01:01:14
Zach Sheets
Well, he's been in a bunch of... He's been in a bunch of... Movies. Like, he was in, like, uh... Like, King Arthur and Harry Brown and bunch of stuff. Peaky Blinders.
01:01:25
Zach Sheets
He's on that...
01:01:27
Chris Prime
Was he
01:01:28
Zach Sheets
I don't think he was... i don't Yeah, I don't think he was a singer. I think he was just like, an actor.
01:01:31
Chris Prime
No, no, that's a singer, man. Oh
01:01:34
Zach Sheets
I'm on his IMDb page and he doesn't mention anything about singing.
01:01:36
Chris Prime
my god,
01:01:37
Zach Sheets
charlie charlie creed miles he played david
01:01:40
Chris Prime
No, David is the the priest.
01:01:44
Zach Sheets
oh okay then is he even is that character even on that the pp page don't think of that like that he's a right arm oh yeah okay tricky that that's who it is he's okay yeah he's a he's a rapper and a musician okay
01:01:57
Chris Prime
Yeah. He was in...
01:02:04
Chris Prime
Damn it, forgot which band. brute Massive Attack.
01:02:07
Zach Sheets
Okay. Yep. That makes sense.
01:02:09
Chris Prime
Which, very fun formidable in like the early like trap music scene and just the UK pop and like underground beats. Electronica, yeah. So, like,
01:02:22
Chris Prime
he is not featured at all. There's no like, there is sort of like trap, like the track of music, but it's not even like done by him.
01:02:30
Zach Sheets
No. Yeah. Eric Sarah does the the score.
01:02:36
Zach Sheets
Who also did, like, he's yeah I think he's done all of Luc Besson's movies.
01:02:43
Zach Sheets
Oh, yeah, he also did Goldeneye. He did the score for Goldeneye.
01:02:47
Chris Prime
Okay
01:02:50
Zach Sheets
Which, yeah, this this movie be definitely, like, I don't, i like, the N64 game, like, the rare music, I feel like, is, like, similar to, like, the fifth element music.
01:03:01
Chris Prime
lot of like temple-ish sounding music
01:03:01
Zach Sheets
but there the
01:03:06
Zach Sheets
But mixed, like, but with like a lot of electronic and stuff, too.
01:03:10
Zach Sheets
I think this wasn't this is like a... was kind of like that weird area of, like, world music and, like, you know like, pure moods. It was, like, Enigma and all that stuff was going on. Like, mixing, like, monks chanting with, like, techno beats.
01:03:25
Zach Sheets
It was, like, this whole trend.
01:03:27
Zach Sheets
But anyway, back the next to the movie. So like, yeah, Corbin and Vito and Lilo and Ruby Rod escape. And then Zorg try like he thinks he found stones. He disables his time time bomb. He's like, oh, I found the stones now. But then the Magalors put their own bomb out there and they they set that off. And and it's just like, Zorg's just, oh, oh shit, I blew up.
01:03:53
Zach Sheets
And then that's it. like like Zorgen never interacted or like really fought with anybody except for Leeloo.
01:04:01
Zach Sheets
there's that there's that I think they added that once the scene where they end up in the elevator and Zorgen just misses them going to the elevator. it's like like it's like I think someone said like you have to have a scene where like at least Bruce Willis is like sort of in the same scene as as Gary Oldman.
01:04:16
Chris Prime
That was a post-production edition.
01:04:20
Zach Sheets
I think so. i think so it was like we have to have like it's it's It's weird that the the the main characters don't like interact with each other at all. At least have pass each other.
01:04:32
Zach Sheets
but yeah, then he's out and this and it's just like they have to just deal with like the evil now. Which, the evil also is able to speed itself up. like It can go faster, so I don't know why it wasn't doing that earlier to like get to like Earth quicker.
01:04:46
Zach Sheets
But it just like like goes to hyperspeed.
01:04:49
Chris Prime
Yeah, it's like selective, like plot. If they need to get there fast for no reason, it doesn't. But otherwise, every ship is cruising speed.
01:05:00
Zach Sheets
Yeah, because the evil just seems like it's just hanging out for in the same spot for like a while. And then like I guess it senses that they have the el they have everything they need to stop it. and then that... mean Has it going hyperspeed? Like, get to Earth to stop them?
01:05:17
Zach Sheets
But then also, I don't, I don't understand, like, I don't get how it's gonna, because, like, the whole thing is, like, if it stands in the middle of the platform where Lelos was to stand, then it it turns everything, like, it kills everything and, like, turns everything dark, from from light to dark.
01:05:32
Zach Sheets
But I don't know, like, how do...
01:05:32
Chris Prime
Wait, wait, wait. Say that again?
01:05:34
Zach Sheets
So like earlier, like Vito, like in his book, he's like, if evil stands in the place where Lelos was to stand, then uses the elements to turn like life to death, death dark light to dark.
01:05:47
Chris Prime
Oh, no, no. So I think you're understanding that the fifth element can decide what kind of force to be. So it's not like an evil thing stands there. Like the fifth element can decide to unleash one of two flavors, basically.
01:06:03
Chris Prime
That was the whole conflict of of what she was feeling. Where if she embraced life...
01:06:06
Zach Sheets
Okay.
01:06:09
Chris Prime
Because there's a whole big thing where she was learning while on the ship about humanity. And if if humanity was...
01:06:15
Zach Sheets
She looks like war, yeah.
01:06:16
Chris Prime
yeah of was like Was it worth it if this is like a never-ending cycle?
01:06:21
Zach Sheets
Mhm.
01:06:22
Chris Prime
So do you just destroy existence because then everything will be done so you can't repeat itself? Or do you keep on living and fighting?
01:06:33
Chris Prime
that's the decision that the fifth element has to make. And I guess that's why they keep her in the box, so she doesn't decide one of two...
01:06:39
Zach Sheets
She doesn't experience anything. Everything's good.
01:06:42
Chris Prime
Yeah.
01:06:42
Zach Sheets
Use light magic to kill the evil. like use your use your light magic to kill the evil
01:06:48
Chris Prime
Yeah, but, like, it's not groomed out that way. It's something that repeated viewing, you understand, that it wasn't that she had to... like just prevent something from standing there no it was that the thing itself can decide to just keep giving that light like the bright light or the darkness again it gets really deep if if you watch it multiple times but it's not convey well it's just bits and pieces and i think if the movie really leaned into that early
01:07:15
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:07:24
Chris Prime
it'd be better for just the the audience that hasn't paid attention to of that a lot, because it's not, like, important until the end. It's, like, the final thing where Corbin is, like, convincing her. It's like, hey, hey, hey, like, we're here. We did it. Like, we have a chance.
01:07:38
Chris Prime
And then she has that, like, breakdown, which is like, I don't know. and don't know why we got to keep doing this. Is it worth, like, why not just end it all? Like, she gets, like, depressed. But of nowhere, at it's it's not like this happened in the middle of the movie or the beginning of the third act.
01:07:47
Zach Sheets
And
01:07:53
Chris Prime
She literally just got shot at. She was injured, but like, fine. All things considered, you know? And then...
01:08:01
Zach Sheets
then she just decides, like, I'm going look up the worst of humanity right now to see what it is.
01:08:05
Chris Prime
Well, no, she looks it up later. No, earlier.
01:08:07
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah.
01:08:07
Chris Prime
She looks it up earlier. Not during the flight back, right?
01:08:12
Zach Sheets
They're flying back. They're on the ship. They escape from the cruise ship.
01:08:17
Chris Prime
Oh, then she, like, Google searches.
01:08:19
Zach Sheets
She's on... I think she says didn't get to the rest of the alphabet. She goes to The first she looks up is war. Seeing all the horrific imagery of war throughout all humanity.
01:08:30
Chris Prime
Okay.
01:08:32
Zach Sheets
When she was in Vito's apartment, she was looking up fun stuff like martial arts and stuff like that. She's having a great time looking up that kind history.
01:08:38
Chris Prime
But there's so... every Almost every alphabet, at letter, the alphabet has something related to, like, death.
01:08:44
Zach Sheets
Horrible. to Yeah.
01:08:44
Chris Prime
Yeah, so how did she miss out on war?
01:08:48
Zach Sheets
She's just like super selective about what she's looking up. but I'm just have fun stuff.
01:08:51
Chris Prime
Yeah, I mean, just just like genocide? She just like skimmed over that? Nah, it's fine. like you know Then it was like war she's like, oh.
01:08:57
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
01:09:00
Chris Prime
Oh no, like, what?
01:09:03
Chris Prime
But yeah, it comes out, and then she's super depressed. Yeah. And you realize that the whole movie, the fifth element has to be convinced. And then that's why at the end they're like oh you have to like tell her you love her.
01:09:15
Chris Prime
And it's it like, what?
01:09:16
Zach Sheets
Because the fifth element is love.
01:09:21
Chris Prime
But you have to tell the woman you love her. And they're like does that mean every 5,000 years she was woken up to like someone whisper, I love you to that casket. And then then the light hits her.
01:09:30
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:09:33
Zach Sheets
Well, it kind of confusing because in Vito's book that he shows the president of what's going to happen, it has a picture of a dark shadow being standing in the middle of the platform.
01:09:44
Chris Prime
Well, that's like a to be added later. Like we don't know what the shadow thing could be.
01:09:48
Zach Sheets
yeah
01:09:49
Chris Prime
It could be a woman.
01:09:50
Zach Sheets
yes
01:09:50
Chris Prime
It could be a casket. It could be a woman in a casket.

Final Act and Thematic Reflection

01:09:57
Zach Sheets
I mean, I guess i guess like the evil probably could have, like if it take the form of like a giant planet, it probably could like turn itself into like a a shadow man or something and just like stand there. like i'm the I'm the element now.
01:10:11
Zach Sheets
But yeah, but they do they do get to the temple. They set up all the stones, and they have to fit but they need to figure out like how to activate them. And it turns out you have provide the element that is like on the stone. So you have to pour dirt on earth. You have to like blow on wind. You have to light fire on fire.
01:10:32
Zach Sheets
have to like sprinkle water on water. And then like you know magical comes out of them.
01:10:39
Chris Prime
Which, I don't know if in the instructions that's kind of important to bring the elemental things. You know, like, breathing on it, okay. Water, it's Egypt.
01:10:52
Chris Prime
You know, it's... Fire isn't easy to bring, especially back in the day. You had to start a fire and, like, drag it over.
01:11:01
Zach Sheets
They're really up to tension of like having Corbin only has one match left. and that's the That's the only chance. they They can't breathe or do anything to but like make sure like the flight doesn't go out.
01:11:11
Chris Prime
Yeah, but in the future, you think they'll have so many more ways to start fires.
01:11:16
Chris Prime
But then the future, the the the the thing that saves the universe is smoking.
01:11:16
Zach Sheets
Yeah, like
01:11:20
Chris Prime
Like, old-fashioned, like, match.
01:11:22
Zach Sheets
is like his he's He gets like a daily allowance of smoking like cigarettes. like It's like like, here's your daily allowance of cigarettes. You get four.
01:11:32
Chris Prime
And do you see, like, how ultra-filtered those cigarettes are?
01:11:35
Zach Sheets
Yep.
01:11:38
Zach Sheets
But yeah, then then they have to stand Lilo in the middle because she's the fifth element. And then, we like we said, Korba has to convince her that there's stuff we're saving, that he loves her, and then that unleashes the ultimate weapon, light, power that blows away the evil.
01:11:45
Chris Prime
Love is real.
01:11:57
Zach Sheets
For, I guess, for us another 5,000 years, itll it'll be back again, I guess.
01:12:01
Chris Prime
Yeah, but then but then, like, does the planet just move back from whatever part of the galaxy? Yeah.
01:12:08
Zach Sheets
or just or Or just like reforms or something and was like, oh man, I'll be back.
01:12:14
Chris Prime
Like, it gets, like, happy. It goes, okay, well, I'm gonna go home now.
01:12:17
Zach Sheets
It takes like 5,000 years for to like reform.
01:12:20
Chris Prime
Well, no, it didn't blow up. It just dead stopped. It becomes basically a second moon.
01:12:25
Zach Sheets
Yeah, so then...
01:12:26
Chris Prime
The ocean's messed up.
01:12:29
Zach Sheets
maybe Maybe that would be explained, because I think Luke Besson wanted to do like a trilogy, but then he kind crammed everything he wanted to do in like one movie. Maybe that would be there been an element of like the the second movie where you're like, oh, now we have a new moon around Earth that's causing issues, like the water level's rising.
01:12:48
Chris Prime
Actually, it's like a second problem where like Leeloo solved one thing, but then brought like another issue. But OK.
01:12:54
Zach Sheets
Hmm.
01:12:55
Chris Prime
So that's a note that brings the question. Does the fifth element weapon only work when the planet was in event within orbit? Or could she have just. Got to that place before the planet arrives and just killed the planet like way further away.
01:13:11
Zach Sheets
Yeah, would would it would her like blast reach the evil wherever it was in the universe and stop it?
01:13:18
Chris Prime
Well, it seemed like a straight line. It has to come from that, like, pyramid.
01:13:20
Zach Sheets
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, because luckily like the like evil was like right over the temple. like It was like literally like right above them.
01:13:28
Chris Prime
Yeah, you know, this could have brought back that target hitting from the Zorg's gun, where as long as it like it releases, it can always target it again. You figure, okay, it's an alien smart beam technology powered by love.
01:13:43
Chris Prime
It could just seek it out, but good thing that this planet was hovering right above Cairo.
01:13:49
Zach Sheets
Yeah.
01:13:50
Chris Prime
Again, because this happened once.
01:13:53
Chris Prime
Did it forget?
01:13:55
Zach Sheets
Yeah, so it based on how goes, it probably do the exact same thing. if
01:14:01
Chris Prime
And then what's going to happen is they're going to write this into history walls of what happened. There's going hyalographic ruby rod. And then, you know, like, that should, do okay, there's enough time has passed that we can write the the fifth element, the sixth element now.
01:14:15
Chris Prime
And it's 5,000 years later. And that temple's still there for some weird reason.
01:14:22
Zach Sheets
is
01:14:23
Chris Prime
But does that mean that temple was there before 500 years prior? 5,000 years? five thousand years
01:14:27
Zach Sheets
It had to have been... so yeah someone Someone did those hieroglyphics. They knew what happened, so
01:14:33
Chris Prime
Because it also seems like the Guardians and the Mondo's SAR whatever, the the alien group, they really just... And then you mentioned earlier, they just sort of dropped off their their thing and then they just did their job i went, all right see you 5,000 years from now or how many other interval visits.
01:14:52
Chris Prime
You figure by the end of the movie, they should check in and be like, what happened to our cargo, guys? Like, where's... Where's everybody? Where's that ship full of people we sent to explain everything?
01:15:04
Zach Sheets
And like how do why and then how is how is the D.Va their like agent? like She's just like opera singer slash like you know secret agent for the Mandoshowans. willing Willing to ingest or like embed the stones into like her body?
01:15:19
Chris Prime
I don't know if that was surgically inserted or she just ate them.
01:15:24
Zach Sheets
don't know. Four pretty large stone tablets like tablets or
01:15:33
Chris Prime
Cylinders.
01:15:33
Zach Sheets
So there's... They're kind of they're like triangle shaped, I guess. but like, yeah, she like somehow put those through her body.
01:15:41
Zach Sheets
then Cormoran's like, dig them out of... Actually, she dies and he's like, dig it out of her body.
01:15:46
Chris Prime
Which I don't know if she, I mean, she smelled like great internally. Cause now imagine, imagine like her, I mean, most of her entourage is killed.
01:15:56
Chris Prime
So no one's going to be like, what's up.
01:15:57
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:15:58
Chris Prime
Right. But imagine being like, I guess I know, I know like a Ruby season is like, what are you doing? Why are you playing around? There's like galactic known. It's like, you know, dig into like lady Gaga and ripping out like things out of her.
01:16:11
Zach Sheets
Yep.
01:16:12
Chris Prime
you're like, what, what's happening?
01:16:16
Zach Sheets
It's like, oh my god, it's like, Ruby Rod here, Corbin Dallas, he's like, elbow deep in the D.Va. He's like, running around in her inner guts. i don't know what's happening.
01:16:27
Chris Prime
I know the president's like listening and just like, what?
01:16:27
Zach Sheets
It's just...
01:16:30
Chris Prime
is he What?
01:16:31
Zach Sheets
Yeah. Yeah, that's it's like the only way they're getting updates from like this entire situation is is like Ruby Rod's show.
01:16:39
Zach Sheets
It's the only way they're getting any sort of intelligence from like this this ship. It's
01:16:45
Zach Sheets
like, thank God Ruby Rod's there.
01:16:50
Zach Sheets
and and there's no cameras or any sort of like other surveillance we could use. Like, watch what's going on on this important mission.
01:16:57
Chris Prime
You figure there'll be a space camera or a hologram or rendition.
01:17:02
Zach Sheets
Well, I guess they mentioned that like the evil is like sucking in all the communication satellites. So guess like it's like interfering with like a lot of the the transmissions and stuff like that.
01:17:12
Chris Prime
Oh, you got me there. Yeah, I think that's so that's why radio still works, because it's the only thing that has sound. Like, i that's, like, broadcasting.
01:17:19
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:17:24
Zach Sheets
like Yeah, lucky for them. Ruby Rod, like, his his microphone thing is, like, the most powerful transmitter in the universe.
01:17:32
Chris Prime
But yeah, I like how the end kind of gives you like a nice wrap up where they throw two people inside inside a healing tank. Just, yeah, but it's weird that the healing tank can heal two people and not just pull like a fly and fuse them together or something.
01:17:39
Zach Sheets
and Like a tanning bed? Like...
01:17:53
Zach Sheets
yeah guess yeah I guess it's it's heal it's like healing their wounds. is what it's most doing it's the say It's the same chamber they made Leloo in.
01:17:58
Chris Prime
it's a 3D printing bed, right?
01:18:02
Zach Sheets
so But I guess it also acts a healing chamber, I guess. to like they can like If you have your scratches whatever, you can heal them.
01:18:13
Chris Prime
Gorman was fine. I think for a guy that been that went through a lot, he he just needed like a band-aid. I don't know why he needed the tank.
01:18:22
Zach Sheets
yeah Yeah, he didn't... Yeah, like, Corbin Dallas ends up in a lot better shape than, like, John McClane did. Like, he didn't have to get his, like, feet sliced up or anything. Like, his, like, tuxedo just got ripped up. was what happened to him.
01:18:36
Zach Sheets
Maybe, yeah, maybe, like, one or two cuts, and then... Yeah, Leloo was one day, i get like, that shot...
01:18:42
Chris Prime
She got shot and then got depressed about not continuing life.
01:18:47
Zach Sheets
I don't if you need like a whole like yeah a special chamber to heal a bullet wound, though. like He had a bandage already. Just like give it time to heal. You throw him in this like crazy healing chamber.
01:18:58
Chris Prime
hey I mean, they are galactic saviors, so healing tank.
01:19:05
Zach Sheets
are they using that for anything else? like Does it heal like cancer or anything like that? is that like People can like smoke a lot. Oh, it's going to chamber. It'll heal your cancer. or like whatever elses other disease
01:19:18
Chris Prime
Whatever future disease. Like McDonald-itis.
01:19:24
Zach Sheets
It heals high cholesterol, so you just eat as much Pomegranates as you want.

Box Office Success and Re-release

01:19:30
Zach Sheets
But yeah, so that's the fifth element. still Still an awesome movie.
01:19:34
Chris Prime
Yeah, it holds up. I know like our recollection of it is just like bits. There are so much detail to it that I think is very well deserved for the time. I think it did well in theaters, right?
01:19:48
Zach Sheets
Oh, it was he was huge. It cost $90 million and made $263 million. so It was it was it was like the ninth highest grossing movie of the year. Friday the 97.
01:19:57
Zach Sheets
I think it was the highest grossing French movie for for like i don't eight years or something.
01:20:04
Zach Sheets
So yeah, it was so it was yeah it was a it was a huge movie.
01:20:07
Zach Sheets
But then but it also got nominated for Golden Raspberry Awards and stuff. I
01:20:11
Chris Prime
I mean, yeah, for I guess I could see if like you really follow the plot like we do. We're like, how did Leeloo about the stones? how did What happened to Leeloo during the downtime? What happened to the Mandel...
01:20:24
Chris Prime
The Monoshars?
01:20:25
Zach Sheets
mean, the show-ins, yeah.
01:20:26
Chris Prime
They just sort of said bye-bye, even though they are they seem like Earth's protector. but What's up with the Mongolor people? Like...
01:20:38
Chris Prime
They kind introduced them and they kind of are like a secondary henchman. But if you didn't have them, what was Zorg's plan?
01:20:46
Zach Sheets
yeah
01:20:48
Zach Sheets
Oh yeah, it looks like like Chris Tucker Milojovic were kind of like the the targets of like the the raspber Golden and Raspberries and like the s Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.
01:20:57
Chris Prime
I just don't think they understood Chris Tucker. Like that 90s era Chris Tucker was amazing.
01:21:05
Zach Sheets
Mm-hmm.
01:21:06
Chris Prime
And then he mellowed out. but I don't know. I think he's loud and eccentric and it's he's fun. It's like, this movie has a lot of great character actor moments.
01:21:18
Chris Prime
Ian Holm's good.
01:21:20
Zach Sheets
Brian James is like the the main general guy.
