Introduction to Karen Madden
00:00:12
Speaker
Hello, so we're at the Councilor Dean's Nursing and Medwifery Conference and I'm with Karen who is a PhD student. Hey Karen, so do you want to tell the audience a little bit about yourself?
00:00:23
Speaker
Kia ora koutou, my name is Karen Madden. I am the Head of Nursing at SIT in Invercargill which is at the bottom of New Zealand. So I am a PhD candidate, hopefully to submit very early in 2026, so in those final stages now.
00:00:38
Speaker
Amazing, you are so close. So close. I can see the light the end of the tunnel and it's no longer the train coming at me. And I was told to say you have an amazing PhD supervisor.
Humorous Graduation Story
00:00:52
Speaker
have that most amazing PhD supervisor and it's not necessarily her academic expertise, it's the colour of her dress code which is all about pink and sparkles.
00:01:02
Speaker
So co-host ah Jane, who likes a bit of pink sparkles. So that's something that Jane and I have always had in common right from the very beginning, was pink and sparkly. I feel a bit left out because I'm the only one here currently without pink sparkles.
00:01:16
Speaker
Well I bought a pink sparkly dress in anticipation for my graduation, not knowing at the time or even thinking to look about what colour of the regalia was going to be and it's red and pink and red do not go together. Oh dear. So I've had to buy another sparkly dress in a different colour.
Research in Mixed Reality for Nursing
00:01:32
Speaker
So can you tell us a little bit about what your research is? So my research is about mixed reality and so for those of you that are not familiar with that term, so those might know virtual reality, when you put on a headset you're completely immersed in a virtual environment, you can't see the external environment at all, yeah what you see is you are in that environment.
00:01:53
Speaker
And then at the other end of the spectrum you have augmented reality which is a bit like your computer gaming. So mixed reality is mixed, it's in the middle. and you can see the holographic image image in front of you, but you can still see the external environment at the same time.
00:02:06
Speaker
So my PhD is around the nursing students' experiences of using the mixed reality, primarily used in simulation around potentially anatomy and physiology and ah developing those clinical reasoning skills.
Student Voices in Research
00:02:20
Speaker
So my passion has always been the student's voice.
00:02:22
Speaker
I wanted the student's experiences of it. it wasn't I didn't want to go in with any preconceived ideas. It was all about giving the students a voice And so I've done a hermeneutic phonological study about providing a voice for the students who engage with mixed reality simulation.
00:02:36
Speaker
Amazing. Could you give us a little sneak peek into some of your findings? Am I allowed to, Jane? A sneak peek? Okay, I'll give you a real small sneak peek.
00:02:49
Speaker
So um emotions is a big thing. I'll leave it at that. Just emotions. Interesting. That's all allowed to give away. are there papers coming? Apparently there is papers coming, yeah.
00:03:01
Speaker
I'm just not sure when, but there will be. 2026 at some point. ah Because I do need to publish, and I do need to publish my findings. so Okay. yeah Absolutely.
Research Challenges and Support
00:03:12
Speaker
So can I ask as a PhD student with SIM as your topic, has there been any kind of challenges or um I think mixed reality is a relatively new aspect of technology and as a result there's always limitations with trying to find organisations that embrace that technology because not necessarily all institutes and organisations do.
00:03:36
Speaker
So recruitment of ah participants was a little bit challenging and it was around COVID times when we were all isolating and simulation was limited because of infection control reasons.
00:03:48
Speaker
um But ah no, I love simulation and so we at our institute we very much embrace it and so I think it's important and it's an integral part of the system. Brilliant. I've really struggled, as you said, engagement in new technology in large organizations.
00:04:08
Speaker
Is there one thing you did to help enable that?
Investment in Simulation Technology
00:04:14
Speaker
You've got to have the investment, not only necessarily the financial, it's not necessarily the financial investment, it's the funnel it's the investment in time to upgrade and upskill in the simulation modalities and I think that's a big part of simulation that's constantly evolving and I think when you're embracing technology you've got to have a very supportive um IT team at the same time so when you are considering um technology for simulation it's not necessarily the educators, it's about the wider
00:04:42
Speaker
the wider team including the IT and making sure you've got their support at the same time. Thank you, that's a great, great point. yeah And I think a lot of people's lived experiences. Oh yes, we might live to hate IT sometimes, but you when you need them, they're absolutely there.
Closing Remarks and Gratitude
00:04:58
Speaker
Well, thank you, Karen. I look forward to your papers. I see the main meals are being served at the dinner, so I will let you get back to it. um Thank you. Yeah, but thank you. And um we'll pay homage to your supervisor yet again. Yeah, who's in her pink sparkly dress as well.
