So

Introduction and Guest Welcome

00:00:41
Melanie Barlow
welcome to Simulation Happy Hour. This is our quick shot session where we ask five questions in five-ish minutes.
00:00:45
Jeffrey Purse
you
00:00:49
Melanie Barlow
I'm Mel Barlow and it's a great pleasure today I've got Jeffrey Purse with me. And Jeffrey is the Statewide Simulation Coordinator and Paramedic Educator for New South Wales Ambulance.
00:01:02
Melanie Barlow
Welcome Jeffrey.
00:01:04
Jeffrey Purse
Thanks Mel, it's good to be here.
00:01:06
Melanie Barlow
Thanks for coming. Can

Jeffrey's Experience and Role

00:01:09
Melanie Barlow
you tell our listeners a little bit more about yourself, like how long you've been in the role and what you get up to?
00:01:12
Jeffrey Purse
thank
00:01:15
Jeffrey Purse
Right, I've been in New South Wales ambulance for over 30 years. I've been an educator for about 20 years of that and a statewide simulation coordinator now for about 18 months.
00:01:26
Jeffrey Purse
ah That role was set up to formalise our position with regard to how we're going to train and utilise our simulation resources both at our new state headquarters, our state operations centre, and at our 12 training units across the state and provide assistance to our educators.
00:01:47
Melanie Barlow
So a statewide educator, that sounds like a massive role.
00:01:52
Jeffrey Purse
Yes, it is.
00:01:54
Melanie Barlow
No doubt you were busy. So I just was really fortunate. Thank you so much. You

State-of-the-Art Training Facility

00:01:59
Melanie Barlow
just showed me around your brand new facility, training facility at Olympic Park in Sydney.
00:02:06
Melanie Barlow
Can you explain to the listeners, like, what it you do here and what the facilities about?
00:02:15
Jeffrey Purse
At our new state operations centre here at Sydney Olympic Park, we train our graduate intake students. We train about 600 to 700 of those per year.
00:02:25
Jeffrey Purse
We also train our specialist paramedics doing their intensive care paramedic course. And both of those courses are based around mostly practically related courses.
00:02:37
Jeffrey Purse
We also have mandatory clinical professional development for our on-road paramedics. And that is also a practical course as well. So they use a lot of task trainers, use a lot of simulation in in that.
00:02:49
Jeffrey Purse
Our facilities here are a state of the art. They're probably the best in the world. And we're going to be expanding those in the near future as well.
00:02:57
Melanie Barlow
So what kind of different environments do you currently have to train in?
00:03:04
Jeffrey Purse
We

Simulated Training Environments

00:03:04
Jeffrey Purse
currently have a simulation ambulance that is based on our on the second floor of our building that is set up with microphones, cameras and such, and we can broadcast those simulations anywhere in the world.
00:03:17
Jeffrey Purse
also have a simulation apartment, a one-bedroom apartment with bathroom, ah kitchen, dining room and lounge room. And they also we can broadcast simulation out of those and various just classroom-based simulation areas and practice areas throughout the facility.
00:03:34
Melanie Barlow
Yeah, you've got so much like amazing education space. It's fantastic.
00:03:38
Jeffrey Purse
Yeah, we are very lucky.
00:03:40
Melanie Barlow
Yeah. And you've got a nice also wet room, don't you, where your simulated blood can fly freely.
00:03:45
Jeffrey Purse
Yeah, we've got... and We've got actually ah two wet labs where we use what are known as solid mannequins, suction-assisted glaryngoscopy and airway decontamination, also task trainers for wound packing and ah for torniquet application.
00:03:49
Melanie Barlow
Yeah.
00:04:02
Jeffrey Purse
They've been specially developed so that, as you said, we can spray blood around there and just hose it out. It works very well in dirt.
00:04:10
Melanie Barlow
So can i ask then, like, what modalities of sim do you use? Do

Simulation Modalities and Studies

00:04:15
Melanie Barlow
you use different modalities or...?
00:04:17
Jeffrey Purse
Yes, of course. Certainly as we are a paramedic-based organisation, the mannequin-based simulation modalities are the most used. We also also have ah used a virtual reality, and that was based... ah We used virtual reality for...
00:04:33
Jeffrey Purse
for simulations that we cannot create ah routinely and easily, and that was for mass casualty incidents. And for that, we actually yeah did a small study on that and found we had excellent outcomes using virtual reality for paramedics. so That a document was called Transforming Paramedic Training with Virtual Reality.
00:04:53
Jeffrey Purse
Great outcomes with that.
00:04:55
Melanie Barlow
Fantastic. So I might put a link to that paper in the notes and also on our website. So if anyone is interested in that, it's good outcome. And you presented that at a conference, didn't you?
00:05:03
Jeffrey Purse
ownership That is correct. I presented at the ACU conference last year and also was presented in Italy just recently as well by by one of the the co-authors, ah which is good. We've gone international on that. So we're we're very happy with with the results from that.
00:05:22
Melanie Barlow
Oh, so you didn't get the trip to Italy?
00:05:24
Jeffrey Purse
I didn't get the trip to Italy. I joked that I had a Chico Roll on the side of the road.
00:05:32
Melanie Barlow
Yeah, great. Good on you yeah I think you got the, you didn't get the best deal in that one.

Advice for New Educators

00:05:39
Melanie Barlow
And our final a question is, like you've, you know, you're in a big role statewide, you deal with a lot of simulation activities,
00:05:50
Melanie Barlow
What advice would you give new simulation educators coming into the field?
00:05:56
Jeffrey Purse
I think the best advice would be to get out to conferences, visit simulation centres and actually network and utilise ah ah vendors for that as well because they have the simulation world in in Australia is a close-knit family. That includes both users and vendors.
00:06:15
Jeffrey Purse
i Create a network and sponge as much information as you can out of that network. And if they want, contact me as well.
00:06:24
Melanie Barlow
Excellent. Thanks, Jeff. And yeah, we networked at a conference and that's how I got to contact you and see your awesome facilities.
00:06:30
Jeffrey Purse
That's correct.
00:06:33
Melanie Barlow
So thank you for that.
00:06:35
Jeffrey Purse
No problem at all.
00:06:37
Melanie Barlow
Excellent. Well, we were with Jeffrey Peirce and thank you for your time. And

Future Plans for Training Facility

00:06:43
Melanie Barlow
actually, can you tell us before you've got some plans for your training facility?
00:06:51
Melanie Barlow
Don't you? that Which I am so jealous of.
00:06:52
Jeffrey Purse
away
00:06:54
Melanie Barlow
They are so amazing. Are you able to share a little bit?
00:06:56
Jeffrey Purse
Yeah, we've got plans for a room we have in the in the basement of our building. Those plans are to to create a gritty urban simulation environment involving a road, a nightclub, convenience store, industrial premises, cars on their roof.
00:07:15
Jeffrey Purse
And we also want to include some mixed reality there and also wall projections, work sites and such. All that, of course, will be captured by video and audio and can be, again, broadcast anywhere in the world.
00:07:30
Melanie Barlow
That's amazing. So I'm coming back when that is in and going to have some fun.
00:07:34
Jeffrey Purse
ah Most definitely. We'll get you a helmet and some gloves and in you can go.
00:07:39
Melanie Barlow
Brilliant. Love it. Thank

Conclusion and Thanks

00:07:41
Melanie Barlow
you, Jeff, for joining us for Simulation Happy Hour.
00:07:44
Jeffrey Purse
Thank you, Mel. it's been It's been great to be here.
00:07:47
Melanie Barlow
Thank you. Bye.
00:07:49
Jeffrey Purse
See you.
