jamie peacock: Welcome to The Loan Machinist, where it's just you, the work, and the machines. What have you got going on today, Kurt?

Curt: ah This week I don't have a ton to talk about, but I'm going to talk about how braking my wife's Subaru led me to fixing my cleaning issues, potentially. How about you? What are you going to about?

jamie peacock: We've got lots of things to talk about. We're going to actually chat about the repeatability on the anchor points. We're going chat about some shunk stuff. And we're going to chat about probably building an office in an anostation.

jamie peacock: How are you this fine day Kurt?

Curt: I'm doing good, doing good. Better than last time. was a little spaced out last time. This time I feel little bit more better-er. I don't know.

jamie peacock: Nice.

Curt: How about you? What's going on your world? How are you feeling?

jamie peacock: ah Yeah, I will probably be coughing but yeah, I'm feeling much much much better just got a bit of a lingering cough now and I look less like I've had a stroke.

Curt: you still have your plague too?

Curt: Oh.

jamie peacock: The c sinus infection was rough. I looked like I was winking at people the entire time.

Curt: ah

jamie peacock: So yeah, I'm on the mend.

Curt: ah

jamie peacock: And yeah, we actually this weekend, I'm pretty much off, which is weird.

Curt: yeah

jamie peacock: ah Yeah, kind of one of the perks of having a workshop is that I have a little bit of separation from work. So yesterday, Danik and I went and ran some errands. I bought 10 sheets of plywood and bunch of shelves and stuff. and dropped them at the workshop, and then came home, well, then went to another shop and bought some planks and stuff, but that's it, that's all the work I've done all weekend.

Curt: Nice. Well, it's good to take a break.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so, yeah, well, we've been pushing hard the last three weeks, so month-end weekend, or beginning of the month weekend, just stop, we don't need to be working, we can take take a breather.

Curt: Like it's the point, the whole point of it.

Curt: Good. It's good.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so, trying to get some work-life balance. I preferred my old way of just having a job in both hands, but The wife didn't like that for some reason.

Curt: Yeah, is it's so easy. This thing is when you, like we've talked about a thousand billion, million times here.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: When you like what you do, it's very easy to work continuously until you just realize you've worked continuously.

jamie peacock: Well, yeah.

jamie peacock: So our patre our lovely Patreons have voted on my hair so far. think we're gonna let that go another week. um

Curt: okay.

jamie peacock: So yeah, next on the list of, well, so far, Jamie needs to make an Isogrid Alice band.

Curt: What's what's the vote?

Curt: Sick. Okay, cool.

jamie peacock: Yes. So i've got a whole bunch of fa I've got a whole bunch of five millimeter five series aluminum plates, like a lot of it off cut.

Curt: Tie your hair back and

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So I think I'm just going to design them out of that and and then anodize them purple.

Curt: Mm-hmm.

Curt: Oh, so I can just...

Curt: And bend them around your dome or or fully billet them.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so I'm going machine them flat. So I'm going machine the backside corner radius everything, or fillet everything, put like three holes in it, then I'll bolt it to a fixture with the knife-making method, machine the other side, put the excessive amount of ISO grid, and then anodize it.

Curt: Yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: I think I'll bend it first, then I'll anodize it.

Curt: Yeah, yeah, yeah. ah

jamie peacock: It's going to be fancy as fuck.

Curt: Cool. That'd be pretty.

jamie peacock: Because, yeah, my hair currently is long enough to get in the way. Like, I can see it. It's a problem.

jamie peacock: So Alice band.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: Even when I can tie back, I still wear an Alice band because I don't like seeing my hair.

Curt: Yeah, I'm sure Alice Band is the... ah That doesn't carry over to here. But you can and from context, you can infer it.

jamie peacock: ah Yeah, probably not. Hair band, yeah.

Curt: So yeah, yeah, hairband, so...

jamie peacock: Yeah. I don't know why it's called an Alice band, but I assume Alice wore one once or invented it.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so I will be making a fancy, fancy Alice band.

Curt: That's funny.

jamie peacock: um I may, depending on how long it may take to make, I may make a few extras and take them to IMTS with me.

Curt: there You might come across a girl so or a boy with long hair.

jamie peacock: um i know i know there'll be a few girls there that would probably appreciate it, so yeah, we'll see.

Curt: really too

Curt: Sick. Okay.

jamie peacock: But I feel like it's going to have an hour and a half, two hours of machining in it. because going to have to use a really small end mill.

Curt: Yeah, it's going Yeah.

jamie peacock: Like, it's going to be one millimeter end mills to nibble out all the corners of our cigarettes.

Curt: Haha.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: But, yeah, it's one of those things, like, it's something I want to do because it'll be fun. Like, it'll be fun for me to do, so I will do it.

Curt: Totally.

Curt: Yeah, I know it.

jamie peacock: There's, like, zero reason to do it other than it's fun.

Curt: same thing. Like I have some, so I have a, I'm working on a pen for my wife and it's, it's ridiculous. Like it's just because I can. And um it's probably not something I'll sell. I might, i don't know who knows, but it's at the point where it's like, it's just so ridiculous. Like, and same thing, like my kids or whatever, like when they go to school, I'm just to make them ridiculous pens to play with. They're going no idea that like they're in school, whatever, you know, grade two or whatever. And they're writing with a pen that, you know, cost me $1,200 to make.

Curt: because Because it was fun, right? And then they're like, their friends are like, oh, I gave it to Tim.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It's like, you did what? It's like, i had that had eight hours of trying to figure shit out.

jamie peacock: yeah

Curt: Or like you said, i had a 164th end mill that ran for seven hours to make it look like that.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It's like, anyway.

jamie peacock: No, that's like, that's the thing. is You, jump sometimes you just do stuff because it's fun. Um,

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: like Now also I'm busy with her with an L plate for the fourth axis. that That has actual use. But it's a hell of a project. I finally got pull studs and it's queued to go into the machine at some point this week. Like this week I've got a bunch of stuff like filler work I want to do and then I'm on to molds next week because those need to be done by the end of the month.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: And there's like 30 something hours of machining across set of molds.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: So i want want to get those knocked out relatively early in the month.

Curt: Fair. Yeah, it's a lot of cutting.

jamie peacock: Yeah, get them into my... my Yeah, it is. A 70mm thick aluminium block.

Curt: ah Okay, okay.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's a chunky boy. And I'm dropping in 60mm with a 6mm ball nose to surface it.

Curt: Okay, yeah, that's decent.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's it's annoying as fuck because it kind of chatters in the corners a little bit because the shank touches.

Curt: Yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: But I have a tool and cutter grinder, so I'm just going to relieve the shank.

Curt: Totally, yeah, 100%. Right,

jamie peacock: Yeah, put it in relieve the shank. it It's not a cheap end mill that I bought, but whatever. I'll brutally murder it. And then that goes in my hydraulic because I bought a six mill hydraulic for that job.

Curt: right right, I think you mentioned this last time for for that, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, bought a border of six mill.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: ah ah Yeah, let's let's dive into the shank stuff because that's ah interesting.

Curt: sure yeah but

jamie peacock: So the shank agent came past to drop off my six millimeter tool holder. old And he's like, oh, I've got this in the car. He has a 12 millimeter holder. You can pay for me, pay for it. in a few weeks time it went straight into the machine um the surface finish i was getting with my 12 millimeter end mill i was using it to face in a er32 and it ran pretty true in that er32 i switched to the hydraulic and it literally night and day in the surface finish like yeah night and day so that's in my machine now um

Curt: Oh no, don't tell me this. look um

jamie peacock: then I went to visit him because I needed a drum to put old coolant in. He's like, no, no, he's got a drum. Just come, come past. So the next day I went past and i was like, do you have any really long six mill end mills? He's like, have a look.

jamie peacock: They had one that they had run a single cut in and then changed to a different end mill for a customer job. So I got 50% off on the end mill. Um, And then I got a set of pull studs from him' like no go check if they're going to work with your jang plates.

jamie peacock: And if they work, then you can sort me out for them. So i'm like, okay, sweet. The let the shunk pull studs are 60% the cost of the knockoff Lang ones here.

Curt: Oh really?

jamie peacock: They are 800 and something rand x vat. The ones than the Lang knockoffs are 1250 rand a set.

Curt: Oh, well nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so like exactly.

Curt: Yeah, get brand one brand name ones. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Also the shunk ones, so for Texas and Lang, they the locating feature only right at the top of the pull stud, whereas the shunk ones are parallel with the 20 diameter all the way down.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: So if you push sideways on them, they don't deflect.

Curt: Oh, okay. Oh, I see what you mean. Okay, okay.

jamie peacock: Yes. And then it gets worse. So i was chatting to him He was trying to sell me a Mazak. um And then we were looking at the the demo table. He's like, oh, no, you'll do me a good price on one of these 9652 basses. 9652 bass was, he say it was? so Let's round it up. um No, that's an interest. $520. $520.

jamie peacock: ah five hundred and twenty dollars

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: for a zero point base for my fourth axis to replace the jang plate. It's $520.

Curt: Oh. Oh, that's... Yeah, that's pretty reasonable.

jamie peacock: And it's all stainless.

Curt: Oh, shit. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Because all of the shunk stuff is just all stainless.

Curt: Yeah, totally.

Curt: Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: So I'm like, o that's a fucking problem, but okay. So yeah, I'm trying to rob a bank and then I'm going go buy one of those.

Curt: but Yeah, no, it's...

jamie peacock: And then put that on my fourth axis because then I've got a proper, not a jang plate, I've got a shunk plate. And the shunk will work with the Lang studs. That I have on my anchor points, so it works with like they're all cross compatible.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: um The shunk ones are just not tapered, the shunk studs. So the shunk, you can actually buy Lang compatible studs from shunk that are just direct geometry from Lang.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: Yeah, because they also the fifth access agent and he's like, yeah, no, don't go there.

Curt: Huh.

jamie peacock: The studs fucking snap.

Curt: Hmm, interesting.

jamie peacock: Yeah, I was like, interesting. they like They're a Fifth Axis agent. They don't really bring any of the Fifth Axis stuff in.

Curt: I've heard like a few people kind of not talking pleasantly about Fifth Axis.

jamie peacock: Because, well, the price on Fifth Axis stuff, you may as well buy Shunk by the time you get it here.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Like, it's kind of kind of silly. um But yeah, like ordering from Shunk, he reckons three days delivery and the shipping is like, they've got you UPS arriving every day with stuff from Shunk.

Curt: Oh, nice.

jamie peacock: because they are the main chunk agent.

Curt: Okay. Well,

jamie peacock: So like I ordered three days later, I've got what I ordered.

Curt: Oh, okay. Well, that's reason.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: I thought, yeah, they're maybe they're trying to sell stuff on their shelf that's just been for 100 years sitting.

jamie peacock: New I ordered that. And then he also tends to order extra stuff like when he does an audio thrown one or two extra tool holders that he's got stuff on the shelf. Like he's got a tento.

Curt: over Okay.

jamie peacock: No, not tento. Try boss demo set that he's trying to sell to me and I'm like,

Curt: Hmm. Hmm.

jamie peacock: I don't want to spend like I think that is well, yeah, that that thing is like six or $700 for the set. So three extensions and the little clampy block. They're not cheap, but I want to move some of my animals over to it.

Curt: Right.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: So then I'll just set up your 20s tap them so they're running dead nuts. And then I can quick change the animals without worrying about run out.

Curt: Right. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Or put them in my hydraulic if I really want i want to be super fancy.

Curt: Yeah. well I'm glad I'm glad that hydraulics is working well for you. I mean, I figured it would, but I just I'm trying to steer clear that hydraulic

jamie peacock: So i've got I've got the one I use for the anchor point bodies that takes the 45 length of cuts, 12mm cutter.

Curt: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

jamie peacock: um According to my interpretation of the data sheet, that one can't take my normal 12mm cutter. um According to his interpretation of the data sheet, the second one I bought cam. So I put it in the second one that i have. So I have two of those. And I've got a 20mm hydraulic with a reducer sleeve running my 10mm rougher.

jamie peacock: And then now I've got the 6mm. But the problem is it's a... I want to say it's 69, but I think it's 67mm gauge length. It's super short. So kind of not useful for anything i want to do on the fourth axis because then I just don't have the reach.

Curt: Oh, right. Okay. Yeah.

jamie peacock: So it's probably going to be relegated to like my ball mill or something.

Curt: Yeah, totally.

Curt: Right, right, right, right.

jamie peacock: But i will we'll see. I might use it as a second six millimeter end mill because I'm currently auditing my tool library.

Curt: Okay. Just to put more sisters in there or just to...

jamie peacock: Yes. I assume you have not read, you have not listened to Down the Rabbit Hole.

Curt: I listened to the first episode. I haven't touched any podcasts since then, so

jamie peacock: Okay. So yeah, always be auditing. So like I'm going through now, a new printer, which we'll get to later. I'm printing tool tags and I'm retagging my entire library. So if it's a green tag, it is aluminium specific. If it's a blue tag, it's steel specific.

jamie peacock: And if it's, I don't know what the other color is going to be, probably purple. It's a swing tool. So it does both materials. But that way, I'm not like I've just bought holders and drills and collets for a set of drills for standard sizes that are steel specific.

jamie peacock: Because what happens is I need to quickly drill a hole. I just load in the tool and then I chip the fucking edge because it's not a coated tool. It's not really made for steel. It'll do it. But yeah, then when I go back to drilling aluminum, it's a fuck up.

jamie peacock: So I'm now separating those tools out.

Curt: sure makes sense yeah that's a good idea

jamie peacock: Yeah, so yeah, and then color coding my tool tags as well. So it's idiot proof for when I'm deciding to channel my any my inner idiot.

Curt: yeah well like said in the long run like the tool hold yeah toolers like cost money but they're they're not that expensive in comparison to constantly breaking down shit and putting it back and breaking it down and putting it back it's like ugh

jamie peacock: They're not.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So like i've got I bought another six ER20 holders for drills. I buy the cheap ones from China. I put drills in them. It's fine. There's no side load. I'm not worried.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Anything with heavy side load, I use a decent tool holder. um yeah Speaking of decent tool holders, I pulled the pull stud out of my one flux vase.

jamie peacock: It's in my hydraulic. The other one's getting stripped. I'm pulling out the other pull stud out to put it in my hydraulics. I've got Mari tool pull studs in my hydraulics and Chinese pull studs in my anchor points.

Curt: I thought you pulled the pole stud out of it. I'm like, how the hell did you pull a pole stud?

jamie peacock: I know.

Curt: I see what you did.

jamie peacock: I'm not that skilled.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, I unscrewed it. actually need to chat Ken about that because the tolerance on the Chinese pull studs on that 12.5mm bore tends to be a little bit oversized.

Curt: You unscrewed it into the end. Yeah.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So it was tight when the new pull stud went in.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: It's something I've noticed with the Chinese pull studs. They're just ever so slightly big.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: So it doesn't matter. We're not locating on that feature. So i just when I make pallets, I think I make it like 12.55 and then I know it's not an issue.

Curt: Oh, right. So you're not, yeah. Cranking on it to get it in.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah. Fair, fair, fair.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Because we are when I swapped it, I was cranking on it.

Curt: But I guess it's aluminum, so like worse gonna worse, just crank on it like it's gonna make its way.

jamie peacock: But yeah, it doesn't matter. ah Yeah, I think I put a bit of copper slip on it when I put it in, just so that I knew the threads wouldn't bind up.

Curt: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like just put some anti-seize, like rather just err on the side of caution. But yeah, and then, yeah.

Curt: I know I, uh... Oh, go ahead. Nothing important. It's boring. Carry on. two

jamie peacock: ah Yeah, I'm going to blast through a couple of my things before we get to your topic, because I think your topic is going to take a while.

Curt: No, i had a I had a side quest, but it's not it's not even a fun side quest.

jamie peacock: Sidequest, sidequest, let's go. Also,

Curt: No, no, it's boring. It's boring, so it's... It's actually my monitor's sick. I like this shirt. it's It's not a fun side quest. Carry on with your ah with your talk.

jamie peacock: Okay, I discovered that my circular saw needs a bigger battery.

Curt: m Is it trying to chop up all that aluminum plate, or...?

jamie peacock: Yeah, so I'm done with that now.

Curt: okay Yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm done cutting that shit up. Charge the batteries, 4 amp hour battery on a 2 amp charger, and it charges in 15 minutes. What does that mean?

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: It means that we're using less than a thousand fucking milliamps. So what I ended up doing was charging both batteries, cut until the battery starts cutting out constantly, swap batteries, cut,

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: By the time I've got the second battery cutting out constantly from overcurrent, the second one is, the current sensor's cooled down.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I can snap it in, carry on cutting as soon as it starts just swapping batteries so that I could get through the cuts.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: It was horrible. And that's the biggest battery for that brand of saw. So, yeah, a little bit frustrating.

Curt: Yeah, when I wanna to buy cheap tools like that, I'll just buy a wired version because I'm like, fuck it. I know it's going to be better.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so I've got a wired saw, I just don't want to kill it considering it's older than me.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: It's a really good Metabo saw, but yeah, I bought the battery on make my life easy.

Curt: Oh.

jamie peacock: It did not.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Made it harder. Yeah.

jamie peacock: it It cuts wood fine, like it's going to cut wood this week when I build the office, but yeah, it's... ah Not ideal for cutting aluminum. And we're doing a three meter long rip and then cutting every half a meter along that cutting 500 long. So it it's a lot of cutting.

jamie peacock: Like we probably cut 20 feet worth of aluminum. and No more, like 40 feet.

Curt: And how how how thick was that?

jamie peacock: Five more.

Curt: Okay, so not ridiculous yeah not ridiculously thick, but still.

jamie peacock: Five millimeter. No, not absurd. I've done worse than that. um

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I cut 100 by 100 block on my chop saw.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: My chop saw can't reach 100 deep, so I had to rotate the block and clamp it and cut again.

Curt: Nice. Nice.

jamie peacock: god I've done some very, very silly things, cutting aluminum with wood tools. um But yeah, those plates are now done. finished them on Friday afternoon.

Curt: Sick.

jamie peacock: Like all the rings, all the plates, it turns out I made 112 them.

Curt: Oh, that's a lot.

jamie peacock: Yeah, at between, it's and diameter. Like, it was a shitload of them.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I didn't realize it was that many. But yeah, knocked the last one out on Friday, and in doing so, discovered the repeatability of the harbor. So, I have a work coordinate set, G510.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: It is the theoretical center, well, it is the center of the four anchor points. So when i when I put them in, I've got that linking plate. It has a bore in the middle of it that is I put in the fixtures. Obviously, the fixtures were machined in the anchor points.

jamie peacock: I put in the first fixture, and I was off by 14 and 12 microns

Curt: Okay, that's reasonable.

jamie peacock: when I swept the bore.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I then put the second one in when I finished off first finishing the first one. It was exactly the same place. I didn't adjust it.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: I swept it. It was dead nuts. I then put in the third one. It was eight microns off in the one direction. And when I put on the last fixture, was 14 microns off in one direction and dead nuts on the other direction.

Curt: Nice. Nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like it repeats fucking amazing. I was like shocked how well it repeats. um But yeah, super super fancy having the big fixtures that go on and off.

Curt: hu

jamie peacock: And I've also now figured out why i was having the binding issue on the on the harbors. So the the tray for the for the spindle gripping, it was getting stuck.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: So I took a 10mm end mill and just reamed out the one fucking hole, and now it's not a problem. So as it was lifting, so because the air comes into the front ones and then ports to the back, the front was lifting and causing it to bind on the back locating pin.

Curt: Oh, nice. Okay.

jamie peacock: So I loosened that up just a little bit, and now it's not a problem anymore.

Curt: Gotcha. Gotcha.

jamie peacock: So I've actually changed the spec.

Curt: Perfect.

jamie peacock: Well, I've changed the spec internally. need to change the documentation from 10 millimeters plus 10 to 20 microns to 10 millimeters plus 20 to 30 microns on the bores.

jamie peacock: And then it's a non-issue.

Curt: Okay, that's good.

jamie peacock: Like it's literally a 10 micron change solves the issue.

Curt: That's good.

Curt: Yeah, that's usually how it works when those like little itty bitty bindings and whatnot.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah.

Curt: So sick.

jamie peacock: So I've got that working pretty freaking well now.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: um And then some smart illiterate ordered the wrong size material.

jamie peacock: So I needed to make for mag bases.

Curt: Oh,

jamie peacock: So I needed to send mag bases to anodize.

Curt: okay.

jamie peacock: So I ordered 60 pieces of ah material for Glock 19s and 60 pieces for PO7s. The PO7s are 25 thick. The Glock 19 strata is 16 mil thick.

jamie peacock: And I ordered them as 12. which is the finished part size.

jamie peacock: So I now i have 60 pieces of 12-millimetre plate that um'm I'm going find are useful. So I had to make the 12-millimetre thick part out 25-millimetre thick material.

jamie peacock: So I literally just evaporated the top.

jamie peacock: I don't have the laser at work yet, so I couldn't set up the gripping setup. So I just quickly burned through it in an afternoon, loading two at a time in the vase, in the two self-centrings.

jamie peacock: it's like it was a seven minute run it wasn't horrid so i just left that to run and then those went to anno so i finally dropped a whole bunch of shit at anno like a hundred and something parts so now i just have to wait for them to ruin them all for me and then i can go fetch them i have faith

jamie peacock: yeah so i dropped 50 mag bases there for anodizing like a rack internally like very clearly rack these things fucking internally and then the other stuff like just rack in the holes i don't really care about any of the holes Um, so I'm curious to see how it's going to come back, whether we're going have runs or not, whether it's going to be a total fuck up.

Curt: okay.

Curt: Because, yeah, you never ran these through, like, a commercial anodizer. You've always anodized these in-house.

jamie peacock: I've always done them in-house, yeah.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So I actually left on the mag bases, I left off the locking hole. And my plan is when they come back, I'll put them back in the fixture and just drill and thread the the locking holes. I'll just drill then rigid tap, thread millets.

jamie peacock: um That way we don't have the risk of anodizing runs because M3 holes are renowned for runs.

Curt: Sure.

jamie peacock: So I'm trying to just avoid issues where I can. um

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: But yeah, it's... ah

jamie peacock: Yeah, dealing with anodizers is really, really annoying. And also having my workshop split is super duper annoying.

Curt: Oh, you mean between like home and the new shop?

jamie peacock: So like my anode is still at home and my CO2 laser is still at home. I also discovered I can buy a 50 watt tube for half the price of a 60 watt tube and I have a 50 watt power supply anyway. So I may as well put a smaller tube in my laser.

Curt: Oh, okay. Yeah, because that one's starting to toast.

jamie peacock: When I built it, like could it was 40 or 60, and I'm like 60-watt, 50-watt power supply. That way you can never overcook the tube. um But I think my tube very much on the way out.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: Yeah, still works, but I think when I move it, I'll do a bunch of maintenance and clean, all them like all the mirrors are clean, but just clean everything and see if can get it to run for a bit longer.

jamie peacock: um I want to try to get that to the workshop this week. This week, we are building an office, so hence 10 sheets of plywood, and I'm building the Anno setup. I went and bought, so I actually bought a plastic sink for the Anno setup.

Curt: Okay, nice.

jamie peacock: So it's not Tupperware with a hole in it. It's an actual sink for washing parts and rinsing stuff. So yeah, that's going to be fun. I pull power, well, pull the cable to that room.

jamie peacock: I just can't get to my cable tracking because it's taller than all my ladders. So I have to go by a four meter ladder now so that I can reach to the rafters and run cables because I don't i don't want to put scaffolding in the workshop again.

Curt: Fair, fair.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like ah everything that needs to be up is up. It's now just another 150 meters of cable that needs to be run through the workshop.

Curt: Right, okay. Yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so like we're running a two and a half square cable to the anode room. I'm running a two half square to the workbench. I've got to run a one and a half to the one camera and a one and a half to the office for power for the door lock because you put a magnetic door lock on. So it's like all these little little annoyances. I'll get the machine running and then I'll work on those. That way we're not just hemorrhaging time.

Curt: Yeah, no, totally, totally.

jamie peacock: And I now have the auto drains for the compressors hooked up, and that's all in home assistance. So you turn on Ironman mode, the compressor kicks on for a minute, then it turns on the auto drains.

Curt: sick that's nice that's a nice quality of life little thing yeah

jamie peacock: Yeah. And when you leave Ironman mode, disable, turns everything off. Like, yeah, the fanciness. I like very much still in the beginnings of of setting that up, of home assistance integration.

Curt: I follow like home assistant on Reddit and like the amount of times it comes up and be like, of course I spent like whatever, four hours troubleshooting. Why my, you know, automated lights decision doesn't turn on when I could have just solved this all with a switch.

Curt: And it's like, yeah, well shut up.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so I tried to turn the lights off and the the modules title disconnected from the network. So I had to reboot the the router and reboot the fucking thing. I'm like, fuck sakes. So yeah, a little bit annoying, but yeah, we'll we'll get it all all sorted out. I'm having major issues with my home assistants at home. It just keeps disconnecting me from the the app.

Curt: Oh, weird.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like really like frustrating. I think um it since I updated, so just need to update again and then it should be fine.

Curt: Yeah, I just, I never update. Once I know things work, I'm like, fuck you, never updating.

jamie peacock: So, yeah, finally decided to buy into the DJI ecosystem and bought myself an A1 Mini and a filament dryer. Because my mate Dave reckons, cool, buckets with filament, that's great.

jamie peacock: Like, the print quality is so much better.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So I bought a two-roll filament dryer with the intention of getting another A1 Mini and automating the two of them in the office upstairs.

jamie peacock: So then I can just queue prints and let them go. um so I started printing tool tags. It took me a while to get it right. Like the slicer is different. And obviously I didn't read the manual.

jamie peacock: So yeah, that's something for tomorrow. I'm going to play around with it a bit more. um I ended up having to tweak the print profile, but then... I'm getting some weird shit, so I'm going to go to the default print profile, but not have two filaments set up because for some reason it has two fucking filaments set up and it uses filament two for everything. like Fucking weird.

jamie peacock: So it was printing my PETG at PLA temperatures.

Curt: Oh, okay. Yeah, I'll do it. Yeah, that caused one issue.

jamie peacock: Took me a while to figure out how to make that not happen. So yeah, I'll get it dialed in because I need to print an enclosure for the pneumatics isolator. need to design and print enclosures for that. That was one of the reasons for getting the printer.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so tool tags right now, then gripper fingers. I printed some over the, well, on Friday. I think on Friday, I think I got like seven hours of print time on the day I got it.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it takes like an hour to set the thing up.

Curt: That's cool.

jamie peacock: Like it does its disco dance and leveling and vibration, ah that calibration, all that shit, flow analysis. And then eventually it's like, okay, I've come to life. like, cool, here's the first print, bitch. Let's go.

jamie peacock: I had the print set up before even had the printer. Yeah. Yeah, so I bought it on a border on so Thursday evening, and then Danica fetched it for me on Friday from the from the store.

Curt: That's cool.

jamie peacock: This week will be a lot of experimenting on the printer. It's fast as fuck, and I'm like, I kind of want to turn it down. don't need it that fast. Like, if i get better a print quality and I can run a bit slower, I literally don't give a fuck.

jamie peacock: No, I'm used to the potato. um ah This thing's probably going to just stay here and be used for odds and ends. I need to take my TPU through to the workshop, though, because I need to print some dingle boopers on the new printer.

jamie peacock: So TPU this week and then PETG. So tool tags are the first thing. I need more green tool tags and then i need more blue tool tags. So I bought four rolls of filament to play with.

jamie peacock: as one does. um Yeah, like, this week's going to be busy. I've got to put a shelf under my desk for my paper printer, because that used to be on my desk, and now it's going under the desk. um Because, turns out, we don't have or need chairs at the workshop.

jamie peacock: We just stand all day at our desks.

jamie peacock: We have chairs, we have chairs outside.

jamie peacock: We're going to sit outside and to have a cup of coffee, or Carl has a smoke, or we have lunch, we sit in the little outside area.

jamie peacock: So, yeah, also adding a sink to the outside area to... Because what's happening now is the only water connection in the workshop is by the back door where our sink is to wash dishes.

jamie peacock: So we put a hose pipe on there. And then you put the hose pipe in the sink when you're done. And then it drops and it fucking puts water on the floor, which runs directly under the LK because that's the lowest spot in the workshop.

jamie peacock: So now I'm like, fuck that, putting a sink outside with a tap for filling coolant buckets. Like I'll just bolt a sink to the wall outside when we leave. I'll take it with me.

jamie peacock: no Full savage mode. But then we've got to sink outside for filling coolant and washing stuff and whatnot. Just all these little quality of life upgrades.

jamie peacock: We're also burning through a fuckload of coolant, but then again, we also pushed 7,000 and something parts out the workshop this week this month.

jamie peacock: Actually, probably tomorrow, I've got a mill, the BT 30 to 40 millimeter adapter for call for his lathe so that he can quick change drills.

jamie peacock: Yes, so we we turned that out of a we bought a 40 to 14 reducer and then just bought it out to fit for the BT 30.

Curt: Yeah, you were talking about that.

Curt: Right, yeah. Nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so that'll be in this week, and then we can see. Unfortunately, the reducers come with bolt holes in them, which looks kind of stupid. So we might have to, if we want to make them and sell them, i can make them from scratch, just so that we don't have additional bolt holes that we don't want.

jamie peacock: Yeah, considering we've got We've got another 5,000 parts on the current order, and then we're getting an order for another 10,000 parts in the next week or so out of aluminum. So the Emco is going to be running flat out, running 22 diameter aluminum.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so they they're delivering 7 meter lengths.

Curt: That's good. I'm glad.

jamie peacock: We're going to optimize our cut list to give us an extra part per bar. So we're going to bar pull the job, not bar push the job. That way can stick out the back of the EMCO a little bit so we can run like a 600 mil bar, not a 500 mil bar.

Curt: Okay, I was like, are you running a seven meter bar?

jamie peacock: So that the reload, yeah.

jamie peacock: New. Yeah, so we're going to optimize our cut list to get the most parts out of those bars so we have a consistent remnant of like 30 or 40 millimeters.

Curt: Actually, sizing your bar ends is like a great, like I did that with my, did that a long time ago with bodies on my lathe because it was like a blank, blank, blank, and I get a rem.

Curt: Blank, blank, blank, blank, rem. So I kept them, and now I'm loving it because those rems are long enough, most of them are just long enough that I can, now that I'm using pocket clips out of that same bar stock,

Curt: All those rems I have are all good for pocket clips.

Curt: So now I chunk off like 10 mil and they're the ready.

jamie peacock: So, yeah. So that's what I used to do with with the PTFE that I used to run a lot of. I used to have a remnant of like four inches because the bars would always come in inconsistent lengths. So then I would break down those inconsistent lengths and end up with these stupid remnants. They all get thrown in a box. And then when you can't get material, you can run the job out of remnants.

jamie peacock: And I literally, the last two times the job's come around, I've run it out of remnants.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, totally. When, like, this job, it would, like, once once I burn through all my little bits, I mean, honestly, right now, it'd make more sense to put a bar on the hard-inch, let it just blank out all the little things, plop them in the middle, let it make pot clips.

Curt: It makes more sense to do it that way. But it's hard to be, like, here's, like...

jamie peacock: Well, yeah, the Colin, Samo the Mama repacked all my aluminium and I'm like, fuck, now i can't get to it because they packed it neatly in the crate. I had a it all chaotically in the crate, like all my drops. So when you want to grab one, you can just fish through the crate. Now it's all stacked and all the big plates on top. I'm like, for fuck's sakes. Now I can't actually get to the the small pieces on the bottom.

jamie peacock: But yeah, we're busy trying to organize material and build racks and stuff. Also want to start keeping certs for certain material. It hasn't been necessary, but it'll make it easier to keep track of different grades.

jamie peacock: I was actually watching ah fortune is not i was watching yeah watching a whole bunch of YouTube yesterday. um Inheritance Machining's new video and Rhodes 4.0's new video using a peristaltic pump to inflate the tube that he's extruding.

Curt: Right, yes. I did see that when you mentioned it.

Curt: it came across my feed because overlords.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so no, he's got another one, another video this week about it, using a peristaltic pump, because you can't rely on air pressure, you need volumetric flow. You need to control the volume of the air, otherwise the part just explodes.

jamie peacock: So are very yeah, know very interesting.

jamie peacock: So like Alex Steele dropped a video. He dropped a 30 minute video about making a sprint. And then the next day, another 30 minute video about destroying his power hammer. And I'm like, I don't have, it's like now half past 10 at night, I don't have 30 minutes to watch this. Like I need to go to bed.

jamie peacock: um I'm going to fall asleep halfway through. So then it's the next day, go to work. Don't have time to watch it. Came home, like fuck everyone. I'm sitting and watching this video before we go to my birthday dinner. Like I've been wanting to watch this for two days now. So I sat down and watched it.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Like I thoroughly enjoy his stuff.

Curt: Well, and there's like, there's some channels I'll watch. Like I have a but bunch of camera channels I follow just because I camera dork stuff.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: And some of those videos, like I'll watch at like one and a half, two X. Cause I know the presenters, but like if I come to like an applied science video, like I'm probably not going to watch that at two X. Cause like, he's going to throw down some like concepts or I'm going to have to be like, okay, I got to run my brain for this. I can't just be like, la dee, da dee, da dee, da. So yeah, there's a few channels that I'm like, no, you get the, you get the one X only. Cause I actually want to enjoy it.

jamie peacock: Yeah, no, 100%. Like, it's, yeah, there's a bunch of very interesting things on YouTube. and Not as much as there used to be, but still a bunch of interesting stuff.

jamie peacock: I actually saw ah saw a project called the Nostalgia Box. which is a box plug into your TV. It has channel up, channel down. When you press channel up, it plays the next episode of the old cartoon.

jamie peacock: It has the green volume bar and the channel things, and it's just got a whole bunch of old cartoons on it for your kids.

Curt: I, uh, when we were on our trip, we stopped at a few hotels and same thing. There's this like, uh, sit in the hotel and ah I was like, okay, you guys want to watch a cartoon? jamie peacock: Time test. Do whatever fuck I want. But in the morning, I want to go and look at specific stuff.

jamie peacock: Yeah. So, what did you do to to the lesbian mobile?

Curt: oh ah I actually, I did give it a little bit of a pounding that it wasn't used to, um which is a fun segue.

jamie peacock: Ah, nice.

Curt: So, um yeah, we we took my my wife's Subaru for a trip just because it gets better mileage. I drive a big Jeep with big tires, so it's like kind of heinous to take 2,000, 3,000 kilometers on it.

Curt: and

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Gas is not cheap. Anyways, so we're like, yeah, we'll take a little Subaru. I was turning. At least this is how I think it happened. and I'm pretty sure this is how was how how it happened. There was a little little side road, and I was just doing ah a yeah U-turn on the side road.

Curt: And like said, I'm used to my a big Jeep with big, fat, big balloon tires. And I'm like, you know what? I'm like, going to get close to the curb on this on this little spin around here. but I'm like, eh, the curbs are eroded. Like they're, they're pretty soft. Like I, it's not going to be a big deal. Like if I, if I clip the curb a little bit, it's going to roll over it. And like the Subaru is a capable vehicle too. Anyways, what I forget is like my tires are huge. And like, if I roll like, and they're big too. So like, if you roll onto a curb, like you just kind of rolled over and it's kind of mushes everything. And,

Curt: And the Subaru rolled into the curb. And even though it was like kind of an eroded curb, the tire just like didn't have enough height to like roll over it cleanly and just like stop dead. So it was like, was like, oh, that's not a good feeling. I'm like, we like we stopped way too quick. So anyways,

Curt: There's nobody on the road. i was going at like a walking pace. So look outside. I'm like, okay and no problem. Like we all, we just pinched the pinch, the tube. Nothing didn't hurt the tire. Nothing happened.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah.

Curt: um ah Like what it it wasn't even hard enough where I was like ah alignment issue or anything. like No, like it it's fine. I'm like, we'll take it back and I'll align or like take it in for alignment later. See what's happening.

Curt: Thought nothing of it. Turn around, park, went about our day, went through our whole trip, came back home. And, uh, my wife parks in the driveway and I see like, it's just like, ah there's a little oil drip, um, beneath her car. i' like an oil drip. like, what the hell? So kind of like, and I don't know Subarus as well. Subarus are like a boxer engine, like horizontally opposed piston. So like everything's kind of a little bit different here. I'm like, where is this drip coming from? So anyways, drips coming from side of the engine.

Curt: was like, you know what? This is under warranty. Like, why am I even wasting my time? Take it in, take it in. Um, they fixed it up and, uh, ah to just finish off that portion of the story it ended up being a spark plug tube seal so it's just like they put seals around spark plugs where the kind of like ah valve covers go over it and just keeps the oil from pouring into the spark plug areas anyways it must have tweaked it's all plastic must have just the I'm assuming the bump must have tweaked it enough that it just had the seal leaking so they replaced the seal and

jamie peacock: Oh.

Curt: Everything was right as rain again. um It didn't alignment. It didn't even need an alignment. Like it was good on alignment. I did, however, ah tear the lower control arm bushing and I'm pretty sure it's from bumping it, um but they covered it all under warranty. So I was like, well, whatever, good to go. um So i was like, sar for sorry for romping your car. And she's like, oh, no problem. um But this all led to there being oil on the driveway. And so I was like, well, you know what? I'm going clean this. So i had a little bit of my Alkanox cleaner left.

Curt: Just some powder. It comes in a powder form. I'm like, sweet. I'm like, I'll just pour some this powder down, put some water on it, just scrub it off, and oil will clean up great. So I did that, rinsed it all away.

Curt: And I'm like, huh. Removing oil from a driveway is difficult. like That's one of the hardest things to remove from concrete is oil.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

Curt: I was was like, huh, that didn't really... Like, it did an okay job, but I'm like, I thought it would have just obliterated it. So I'm like, this is perplexing to me because this is like the same issue with my my pens is basically they're covered in oil and it's similar-ish oil.

Curt: So um anyways, the next few days I wasn't feeling fantastic, but I was feeling well enough to start fucking with asking Claude and be like, hey, I have this cleaner. So I basically said the cleaner I have, them and I'm like, I use this for... ah ah you know, cleaning my pen.

Curt: So I listed all the stuff I have and it's like, oh, it's like, yeah, the cleaner you have is a great cleaner for like, it's meant for for laboratory glass. So it's meant mainly for like cleaning like people oil off of things.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Oh.

Curt: ah It's not so much meant for like a mineral or a synthetic mineral oil. ah So it did, ah yeah, so it says like, it's it It's a great detergent optimized for glassware, but it's not really good enough for oils with like ah like extreme pressure additives. and it's like That's maybe where you're seeing a little bit of issues. It's still going to do a super good job because you're using it in ultrasonic, but like it's meant for fatty ester acids and not for like ah other components, whatever, like sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine, etc.

Curt: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So anyways, it gave me some other um options to try, which I'll list here just in case anyone else is having. If you you run like ah a neat oil machine, like a Swiss machine, um there was like Berlin 815, Turco 4215,

Curt: uh, Oh kite one 65 or Derek clean two 82. Um, they're all aerospace grade cleaners for titanium. Um, and they, the other thing I didn't realize is, uh, as, as I was talking with it here about different cleaning options, um, it says, Oh, like with titanium, you all have like hydrogen, think it's called hydrogen embrittlement.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah.

Curt: Or like, if you use the wrong cleaner, uh, you can start embrittling it. And for my purposes, it doesn't matter if you're building landing gear, big problems. Um, um So anyways, so I started chatting with it about that and ah it recommended some of these and I'm like, well, okay. I'm like, some of these are like really expensive and I can get them in like 55 gallon drums only. so I'm like, ah,

Curt: Maybe not. So we we kept driving down and it's like, oh, it's like actually a really good cleaner as well, um which almost works just as good, especially if you're going We decided like a two-stage cleaning would be better.

Curt: So I'm going now do a... um Basically a solvent a solvent soak to get like the really heavy shit off um just because solvent's kind of cheap.

jamie peacock: yeah excitement

Curt: um I'm not going to run that in ultrasonic because I don't really want to die. ah It'll be like... Well, because I was like, what solvent is better? Is like acetone better or is like IPA better? um And it's like, well, they're like, if you're there, they chat. This is the whole time. um it yeah ah Which is essentially just Reddit. If you you realize what they use for their training material.

Curt: um It basically says like acetone is going to be far more better of an oil stripper than like an alcohol. So it's like, yeah, if you did a pre-wash in like acetone, that would work great. They're like, just be warned about putting that in an ultrasonic. was like, yeah, I'm not going to do that.

Curt: um So anyways, I did that and ahead.

jamie peacock: That's, that's very interesting, because that's a step I added to my ano setup is I acetone wash every single part before degrease it. Like before I wash it with ah with a detergent.

Curt: Well, and see, the really interesting thing for me is I used to work like i used to work in an industry where we did a lot of bonding. um So we'd have really, really clean surfaces. But acetone leaves a residue.

Curt: So we didn't use acetone because everyone's always like, acetone cleans everything.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: i'm like, it does, but it also leaves behind a residue.

jamie peacock: Believe, Yeah.

Curt: um So we used like ah alcohol for everything because it it just left no residue, ah but it doesn't cut as quick as acetone. It also does like acetone can also like actually cut into paint. So you can get all kinds of effects that way, positive and negative.

Curt: Whereas typically and IPA is not going to cut through paint. um But anyways, all boiled down to, talking a billion things about a bunch of specs that I have no business talking about um to Claude because I have no idea what I'm talking about. um But it did say ah Simple Green, they're like super engine aircraft cleaner, whatever they have one. um dirt cheap and it works nearly as good as some of these high-end cleaners and i'm like oh that's funny because like back in the day i ran simple green in my tanks because i just didn't know any better and it's like yeah no it's actually a really good degreaser for like if you want to stay away from solvents it's pretty much the next best thing unless you go to like a specific proper purchased cleaner so is this funny how

jamie peacock: OK.

jamie peacock: This is super interesting. Yeah.

Curt: It was just like, it was such a long road all the way back to something I started with.

jamie peacock: yeah

Curt: And was like, you know what? I remember in the past not having a ton of issues with this. I did have issues that were not, but like, as my processes changed and I added tanks, i added different cleaning methods.

Curt: I also removed that cleaner and added a different ones.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Anyways, long, super long winded way to say, uh, that I'm going to go back to using, I'm still gonna use, uh, Alkinox. Cause honestly Alkinox clean some things that like some people have sent back pens or like something's wrong with this.

Curt: Like the the anodizing has failed. I'm like, it's, it's probably contaminated. you're like, no, I don't think so. I'm like, I'm looking at it like I'm pretty sure it is. They're like, I cleaned it with like dish soap, um like Dawn dish soap. And they'd like a hand scrubbed with dish soap. And I'm like, well, now that concerns me because that ah like oddly enough, dish soap will clean a ton of shit off of anything.

Curt: Like go ask the ducks that, you know get into oil spills.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah.

Curt: Like it's amazing what Dawn dish soap can peel off. um but But still, at that point, Alkinox will still beat it when it's trying to remove gross human finger oils.

Curt: It's just it's so good at that. um And that's how i fix this specific customer's pen. But anyways, see I'm going to try using a few different cleaners and see if it solves my my high voltage anodizing issues that I'm having, which is why i haven't been doing a ton of them.

jamie peacock: yeah

Curt: So yeah, we'll see.

jamie peacock: I'm very curious see how that's going to go. But yeah, very interesting because that is the cleaning I use. So it's acetone soak.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Then from there, it gets cleaned and racked in, well, mine's pink, but simple green, basically clean green.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Yep.

jamie peacock: I bought the pink one because it looks cool. And then from there, it's clean water break tests. And then go through the process. And my results have become super consistent since I added that acetone wash.

Curt: Well, and there's there's the key word there, water break test. Like people, you like you have to do that.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: Like I started doing some water break tests on these parts i was having issues with and I'm like, huh, they're failing. I'm like, how are they failing? They're going through this intense cleaning process. Like they're failing because there's, and then we like, i ended up talking like, oh, yeah part of my contamination is very likely from blasting.

Curt: I'm doing a lot more blasting lately.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: And I always thought the air in your blast chamber would contaminate, which makes sense. If you have oil in your air, you're going the media itself can contaminate, even though it's glass bead.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: The media is like a super big contaminant.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: So i was like, Oh

jamie peacock: So i I've sandblasted a few pots and when I anodized it, super splotchy.

Curt: yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: when I do aluminum, so I don't blast.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: The last stuff I blasted was a baking soda b blast, and that dissolves in water. So you just soak your parts in water for a bit, and then you run it through the process, and you get pretty clean results.

Curt: Right. Well, I'm like,

jamie peacock: So it's interesting. like All these little things add up.

Curt: When I think even like even tumbling, ah tumbling, like just having like, even though my media is not abrasive, like it's the ceramic media, your ceramic media can get contaminated and it can contaminate the part.

Curt: And it's just like, there's just so many levels that you don't realize where like you can get just a tiny amount of contamination in.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: And then even if you clean your part after, it's like if you've, if you've taken, you know, high pressure air and dirty media or media that might have just ah a little bit of oil on it and then whacked it into your part, you know, a bazillion times a second, like a blasting gun will, um, good luck. Good luck cleaning that out of all the little micropores you're making.

jamie peacock: I'm pretty sure i got WD-40 on my tumbling media. because it seems to be hydrophobic now.

Curt: Oh yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: So it's just the pyramids.

Curt: Oh yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm going to throw them in ultrasonic cleaner and ultrasonic them in simple green and then throw them back in the tumbler.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: But that's on the list of shit to do this week because um I took my vibratory tumbler to work, but I didn't take the water system with because it's screwed to the wall. So now I'm going to take that through and I'm going to build a stand that it's all integrated, that I can live in the workshop and I can wheel it outside when I want to tumble stuff and just run power to it because I don't have anywhere for my tumblers at the moment.

Curt: and i think that's i think it's also what now is going to push me harder to go because i looked at vapor honing like months ago and then kind of just sat on my hands for it because i'm like i'm getting the results i need with just blasting and then tumble after and i was like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: ah So the same thing i was talking with Chad, I'm like, well, would like would vapor honing present these same issues? and it's like, ah it'll reduce it because a the media is it is basically floating in water. So like you're going to naturally pull contaminants out of it just from the fact that oil and water don't play along all that well.

Curt: um And then the whole process is just wildly different. So it's like, hmm, so i might have to play with that.

jamie peacock: yeah Okay, it's going down the vapor-honing rabbit hole.

Curt: So yeah, I'm going to see... yeah I'm going to do like one one thing at a time so I can actually track where the problem is.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: um If the cleaning fixes it, then I know whatever downstream is, it's like blasting, whatever doesn't matter. um

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: But if I still have issues, then I'm like intertesting so I can blast apart and then tumble apart and leave one sat and see where the contamination is coming from.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: so

jamie peacock: there's yeah There's a million things to chase down on and stuff like that.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Well, and the thing is these... these are It's such a minor... like if i If I want to do like a high ah like a high voltage color, which is typically where my problems show up, like I can still do it.

Curt: It just takes a little bit more finesse, whereas I don't want it to have finesse. like I want it to be like any single part I use.

jamie peacock: I'm trying to decide how I want to lay out my new Anno setup. I bought a new fan last night. A slightly bigger fan to pull the acid fumes out.

Curt: Mm-hmm.

jamie peacock: But currently, like... It's not in a line. You're fucking zigzagging because I want the the steam coming off of the ceiling tank, the hydrogen coming off of the etch, and the hydrogen coming off of the acid tank to all be in the same area so I can extract the fumes.

Curt: Right. Yeah.

jamie peacock: So it's kind of a stupid layout, but yeah i'll see I'll see what dumb shit I do when im when I put it in the new shop.

Curt: Makes sense.

Curt: Cool. Cool.

jamie peacock: i um Yeah, I think that's basic...

Curt: Cool. So you want to talk?

jamie peacock: Well, yeah, so we've got I've got circuit boards arriving this week for the pneumatic isolators.

Curt: Oh, you got it.

jamie peacock: Need to sort of the components for them. But that's yeah, I'm quite excited for that. it's optically isolated. solenoid driver board. So basically you hook up your solenoid bank to it and on its own power supply that you don't blow your machine up.

jamie peacock: It also has flyback diodes and all the fanciness.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: So there's flyback diodes on the solenoids, flyback diodes on the relays. And then it's a three channel board with the ability to daisy chain. So you only have to put power into the first board.

jamie peacock: And then you put the the jumpers over and you can daisy chain boards up and it does the power and the um override disable signals with one input.

jamie peacock: So you don't have to run ah like six wires to your fucking machine if you don't need to.

Curt: nice

jamie peacock: So we'll see. I'll get them and I'll build up some of them, play with them, check that they work. And then those are going on the side.

Curt: Sick. Awesome.

jamie peacock: Trying to make it ah easy for people to do... to put spindle gripping on their machines without blowing them up.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Because yeah that is a concern like, yeah, that can you don't want to have a solenoid switch off and fly back through your machine and blow up all your drives or something.

Curt: Key word there. Yeah.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah. Less fun.

jamie peacock: And by the looks of it, most machines just have dry contacts for the M codes. So you can put the machine's 24 volt in. It's only switching an opto-isolator.

jamie peacock: It's not switching any high current stuff.

Curt: uh okay

jamie peacock: So you're you're switching an opto-isolator, and then from opto-isolator forward is the the separate 24-volt power supply.

Curt: gotcha gotcha gotcha sick yeah yeah yeah oh that's fucking crazy

jamie peacock: Yeah, so trying to make it safe. And then also the override disabler is, like, super important.

jamie peacock: So, yeah, I'm keen to see how that all works. um But, yeah, boards boards arrive tomorrow. Like, it's amazing. I ordered them last week, Saturday. It's Sunday. Now they're arriving tomorrow.

Curt: What a world. What a world we live in

jamie peacock: I know we we live in a like a crazy world. Like, yeah. So I've got ah the boards themselves and then a little breakout board for the override buttons. So the override buttons plug in with the DB9 connector. And then that goes to this little breakout board that's got three four pin headers and an LED.

jamie peacock: So the LED tells you if the override is enabled and then the three four pin headers are for the four buttons with backlights. So you can see if the solenoid is triggered on the override button and then when you trigger the solenoid, the light also comes on.

Curt: Hmm.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like fanciness.

Curt: That cool.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so be I'm keen to get those built this week.

Curt: that

jamie peacock: And then, yeah, I've got to be making the... So obviously I had the machine busy, so Handy Siemens for sale. I've got parts to make them. I just need to make them this week. So we're going to be making all the parts for a bunch of Handy Siemens.

Curt: Sick.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so my one is that ah the alpha version. We'll go to a production version. In my machine, there's a bunch of small changes that I've made. So we'll upgrade it.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: And then I need to get the vacuum one in as well because I need to machine some stuff on vacuum this week.

Curt: Ooh, that'd be cool. Yeah, that'd cool to see.

jamie peacock: Yes. So we're going to be vacuum loading knife blanks. I kind of want a flip station, but anyway, it is what it is.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: um I need to integrate that into my bit of software for the flip station still.

Curt: this is

jamie peacock: Like right now, it just does tray-vice-tray and tray-vice-box. I need to now add tray-vice-flip-vice-tray.

Curt: Right, right, right.

jamie peacock: as the workflow. Yeah, so it gets a little convoluted. um But yeah, that i'll I'll just sit down with Claude and add all that to my code.

Curt: Yeah, it's crazy.

jamie peacock: Also, you need to use an M17 on your subprogram, not a M13.

Curt: It's crazy what we can do.

Curt: Okay, the M17 fixed it. Sick.

jamie peacock: ah Yeah, M17 is in sub-program call.

jamie peacock: ah So i need to I've got a separate post for sub-programs. I need to just go in and edit it that it uses the M17. And then when I post out my programs that are going to be run as spindle gripping, it has the M17 at the end.

jamie peacock: um Then that solves the issue. Then the auto power off works correctly. So yeah, busy getting all that dialed in. But yeah, quite excited to run bunch of maps.

jamie peacock: Yeah, and then I was looking up Namecheap because we were looking up OnlyPup or something. Trying to find helicoils because guess what? I've never actually bought M4 helicoils. I liberated the ones when I left work nine years ago.

Curt: Those are tiny, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yes, I liberated the set that were in my drawer and I ran out apparently and I stripped a thread in my fixture. on Wednesday, and I'm like, shit, okay, grab the helicoil box, I've got all the helicoils, no, I don't, I have from M5 to M12, but I don't have M4, so I had to go buy another M4 kit, because I couldn't buy the refill,

Curt: Oh,

jamie peacock: So I ended up just buying another kit, but now I have all the helicoils.

Curt: nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's a must-have. you're making fixtures, you need to have helicoils on hand for when you inevitably strip out thread. And then been looking at ladders because I need a four-meter fucking ladder to be able to do the wiring in my workshop reasonably.

jamie peacock: So I'm just going buy a four-meter. It's an extension ladder. I think it does like five meters reach or 5.3 meters. But it's a triple triple extension.

Curt: Yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: So then I can at least get up to the rafters and run the cable work. Because we've got all the cable tracking, I want to put the cables in the cable tracking. But I don't want to have to put scaffolding up again.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah. Fair.

jamie peacock: Also, I can't reach some places with scaffolding.

Curt: Yeah. Well, it's getting up there. So.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Also, my wife's office gets air conditioner because she's living her best life.

jamie peacock: Well, I've got an window that I'm just going to build into the wall. And then we've got an aircon in that in that room because it's going to get hot as fuck up there.

Curt: Um, My Google box is full of basically nothing fun. I spent basically the week resting, not doing too much of anything. I did, however, look up ah if Advil is beneficial because I had a fever for a week. like That's weird.

Curt: Nothing crazy, but I started to look. I'm like, does Advil? Because it'll obviously kill the fever. um i was like, does that impede healing? Because a fever is good for a body.

Curt: So I was curious. I'm like, does killing a fever... Anyways, I went down that rabbit hole. That's actually apparently like a pretty loaded question where they don't have a clear answer for it yet. If...

Curt: ah

jamie peacock: Oh.

Curt: if reducing your fever with like a fever reducing agent, whatever they call them, there's, and they have a cool name. Anyways, um some camps say that it is ah not beneficial to healing unless it's like egregious. And of course, get it down because you're you're doing your body harm.

Curt: But like a mild fever ah might, it might be better to just basically deal with a mild mild fever for a shorter period of time versus reduce it with like fever reducing drugs for a longer period of time.

Curt: um

Curt: they said basically you just you're buying yourself comfort on on one side of the scale.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: The other side of the scale says it helped. But anyways, it it was kind of a, there was no definite answer that I could come across. So that's kind of cool. It's kind of fun reading about it.

Curt: Well, just felt like, cause I'm like every day I'm like, I just I'm like, I keep getting a fever.

jamie peacock: Like I've got painkillers and it's a painkiller with an anti-congestant or decongestant, but like a fucking staunch one. And the doc was like, child this shit three times a day.

jamie peacock: I'm now like, I have one before I go to bed. um I don't want to be on painkillers. don't need them. Like a few, like a week ago, I needed it because I had a killer migraine with congestion. So if I didn't have it, I was very, very grumpy.

jamie peacock: So I was trying to be like, that as soon as I don't need to eat painkillers, I'm not eating painkillers. like Fuck that shit. I don't like those kind of drugs.

Curt: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: well But yeah, moral of the story, just don't be sick, Kurt.

Curt: anyway Yeah, that's the easiest way.

jamie peacock: I know, rich coming from me, but yeah.

jamie peacock: Because they are giant dogs. So the normal deworming tablets are only for up to 40 kilogram dogs. They're both over 40 kilograms. So we had to get ah tick, flea and deworm all in one for them, which was like 20 something dollars each. And I'm like, this is ridiculous. This literally is 2d worming tablets cost more than their food for two weeks.
