jamie peacock: Welcome to The Learned Machinist, where it's just you, the work, and the machines. What have you got going on today, Kurt?
Curt: Oh, this week I will try to make this sound way more interesting than it sounds on paper, but I'm going to talk about everything arriving at once. um installing the mist filter that i bought like or mist filters that about like a year ago And some monster monster prints on the bamboo, which is actually still running in the background.
Curt: But how about you, Master Jamie?
jamie peacock: Nice.
Curt: What are you going to tata about talk about?
jamie peacock: We're going to talk about bluing steel. um how my machine ran for 20 out of 24 hours yesterday and that the slowio is for sale
Curt: Those are more interesting.
jamie peacock: Yeah. Yes, how are you this fine day?
Curt: but Good good doing fantastically Yeah.
jamie peacock: That's good.
Curt: I don't. Okay. I don't have anything else to report other than that. I have. breccia fire brewed cream soda and it is fantastic i think i've drank like three quarters of it just sitting here before i even started the podcast so i'll be hosed by the end but
jamie peacock: sorry
Curt: and don't be um don't worry um not i I wasn't blaming you. I was just saying how good it is. but
jamie peacock: I'm a little bit wrecked. It's been a long week. It's been late nights at the shop, early mornings and late nights the entire week.
Curt: Why? Why has it been so?
jamie peacock: trying to get stuff through the machine before I change over for a job that's going to tie the machine up full. Weeks on end. So just trying to get all the stuff knocked out ahead of that because yeah we have spindle capacity issues.
Curt: and
Curt: Mmm. That's... I mean that's good, that's a good thing, but...
jamie peacock: Great fun. It is, but... Yeah, it's also... Terrifying.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: So, yeah. Oh, also so sort I should also make a note about... my thursday
Curt: Very ominous.
jamie peacock: Sorry. Just remembering things as we go. um
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: but yeah let's uh Let's start Australian on to your one there bro. uh Everything's arriving at once.
Curt: Dude, so like last week I was talking about like, oh, I don't have like the material and like I don't have all these things and like blah blah blah blah and um everything so i was like you know what i'm gonna i'm gonna try not to like get behind myself so i'm like i ordered all my packaging Uh,
Curt: Like. a ton of extra i ordered all this because it's fairly low dollar stuff like whether i buy 500 or a thousand it's like it doesn't really move the needle too much when you're just talking about boxes Um, So I was like, I will just prep out like.
Curt: Hundreds and hundreds of boxes. get hundreds of labels stuck on like just the dumb dumb tedium stuff of just like
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: It has to be done. And once you actually get to it, you're like, oh, it actually takes real time. It just doesn't seem like it should because it's just like. Let's go. Fold a box.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: Let's. laser cut this part let's stick a label on here and like it's literally i spent days doing it just trying to get it all done which is great i have it all done But I also plan for like.
Curt: My material to order... or my materials arrive at this date and then like uh some of these like just a copious amounts of other things that i'm just like oh like i'll stagger and like they're all gonna arrive each day and i kind of had my week planned out and then just like everything arrived like last week Wednesday or Thursday. so I was like,
Curt: i'm not gonna change what i'm doing but now like everything just sitting on my floor i'm like shit like now i have no limit to like what i can do so then my brain just starts going frazzly so i was just like
jamie peacock: yeah
Curt: yeah Stay the course.
jamie peacock: It's not having constraints. you now have no constraints so it makes it hard to choose what you're going to do
Curt: Yeah. totally it's well, and then when you're like when you're sticking labels on boxes and looking at like all the material sitting on the floor i'm like i should at least get this running but i'm like but then that's gonna like that's gonna just backlog everything else i had planned for the next day here so i was just like Yeah, just. Feeling.
Curt: Like. Crazy, but... it's all good now it's all it's all back to back on track now but for like that one day i was like what am i doing
jamie peacock: Yet too many. yeah too many options makes it hard too Pick a direction.
Curt: Yeah. I mean, it's nice having stuff arrive ahead of schedule, but still it was like, no, I, so I scheduled for everybody to be like everybody to mess up and then no one messed up.
jamie peacock: yes
Curt: So I was like, well now. ah So. But.
jamie peacock: But at least it's all there and you can do it when you want to do it.
Curt: Exactly. Yeah, it's it's... Yeah, not a... no not a heinous issue i just i felt bad for like the delivery drivers because i kept going to the door like all my orders kind of got really big really fast um this is like the ups guy he like dropped a box off and he's like careful he's like that one's heavier than it looks and i'm like yeah i know sorry and then like the the fedex guy brought it like a tube of like i buy titanium I'm going to bite.
Curt: cut so it just goes directly in the hard inch and like They should usually ship it to me in like round mailers, and this one is like a concrete form that you would use to like make round concrete forms.
jamie peacock: oh geez
Curt: and it's just like it's packed with titanium and like i went to lift it and i'm like oh i'm like i feel bad for the guy that was carrying this so Like, yeah, this is about the limit of what I would order.
jamie peacock: yeah
Curt: for Handling. because it's just tedious. so Yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah, because it's unsafe. Yeah.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: i've got I need to go and shout at people today because I need to know where the hell my ceiling boards for my office are. They're a week late now.
Curt: Oh.
jamie peacock: and i'll try to get on the phone with them spoke to an ai agent dimension i give me a human
Curt: Oh bummer.
jamie peacock: And then... are set on hold for 30 minutes. So I'm just going to go to the branch and be like, dickheads, where's my stuff?
Curt: ah
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: i need the start like i need the office enclosed so that i can move stuff into it Um... Yeah. Tedious. very very very tedious
Curt: I see it. is it holding you up like is it is it like drop ceiling like can you just go without it or
jamie peacock: Aye. No, you can't go without it. to That room is unbearable. can't run the aircon without the ceiling because it's just gonna be
Curt: oh
jamie peacock: fucking wasting energy. Um, And I don't want... The whole point is that it's a sealed box that's got an aircon to store all my parts in. so that they don't rust or any of that shit when i want to assemble it's all there it's not strewn around the workshop.
jamie peacock: Right now it's strewn around the workshop because I have nowhere way to put it.
Curt: Sure. Okay.
jamie peacock: so the ceiling is holding me up finishing that project and then i can move all my stuff up in there and have it contained.
Curt: Right. Okay.
jamie peacock: So.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: little a little frustrating
Curt: What?
jamie peacock: But, yeah. I'll get shot at the moment. get it resolved. I think I'll just actually go to the branch on the way in today and just shout at them until they give me what I want.
Curt: Uh, Out. I saw your stories about green lights on your machine as you're turning off lights when you're leaving. so How did that go? Was that part of the...
jamie peacock: yes
Curt: 20 hours of running in a 24 hour period.
jamie peacock: yeah yesterday. Yesterday, the machine ran for 20 out of 24 hours.
Curt: That's awesome, man. That's so cool.
jamie peacock: The four hours that I'd missed were between 4am and 8am when I got there.
Curt: Oh, perfect.
jamie peacock: it had run the night It had run an eight -hour run the night before.
Curt: Okay, cool.
jamie peacock: for. On Friday nights?
Curt: Cool. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Saturday I went in at 8 before we went into hearties. I loaded up two more bars. Hit go. and got back from parties at half past four, got... Went straight to the workshop.
jamie peacock: um The machine was still running. I waited, potted around for another 10 minutes. it stopped i loaded another two things hit go and it ran till one o 'clock this morning
Curt: Nice. Nice.
jamie peacock: So we have a few of those gripper inserts in the works.
Curt: Ha ha. Okay, I was wondering what you were running, but okay.
jamie peacock: So we're running we're running those. um And that's currently an eight -hour cycle. I'm going to get it down to about a six -hour cycle for the same number of pots when some tooling arrives. Currently I'm interpolating the counter ball. But I bought the correct...
jamie peacock: angled. sham for a bit to just drill that That counts a boy. because it's a 60 degree comfortable.
Curt: Gotcha.
jamie peacock: That'll cut almost a minute off of each part.
Curt: Okay, and are you spindle gripping them?
jamie peacock: Salami sauce.
Curt: Or is this? Oh, okay. I was like, how are you getting so much run out of bar?
jamie peacock: Two pieces, yeah.
Curt: Okay. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Two pieces of gauge plate and salami slice.
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: It's... fucking terrifying. So the nuts on my slitting saw.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: It's on little self -centering vases. And the serrated jaws, that nut. runs in the ledge. on the outside of the serrated jaws.
Curt: Oh.
jamie peacock: It's I'm getting I'm getting as many pots as I can out of that piece of ball.
Curt: Oh, it's getting cozy. Yeah.
jamie peacock: It's terrifying.
Curt: perfect
jamie peacock: Um, But yeah, out of ah out of a piece of bar, I'm getting like 50 parts.
Curt: okay that's how you're getting so long okay i was like how are you getting that much run out of unless it's like two feet sticking above the bar like a giant Telephone bowl.
jamie peacock: Yeah. And. Yeah, so I've got five in a row and then ten down. in the bar.
Curt: ah Okay, I can see it, yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah. And then I do tool break detect.
Curt: Get lots of them.
jamie peacock: So the way I program it, I actually suppress the tool break detect on the first. on the g54 coordinate set and then the set that's at g55 i left the tool break set because if you Post them all together. It puts all the two breaks of text together.
jamie peacock: And then it does two tool breaker sets.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: So now it only does it after the second batch. but it does it on all the critical tools. So if anything breaks, the machine stops and turns off.
Curt: Oh, okay.
jamie peacock: And so far, nothing has broken.
Curt: That's nice. Ooh, lucky.
jamie peacock: Impressive, like I'm kind of shocked.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: But I am. I think I'm going to set up another slitting saw and dedicate one to aluminium and one to steel. because i've noticed once i run steel with the slitting saw the aluminium finishes go to shit
Curt: Yeah, that makes sense.
jamie peacock: It tells the source, so I'm just... set up another one. More tools, more better.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah. yeah i guess yeah yeah slitting saws make it scary if you get like because if you break a slitting saw For that method, everything gets scary fast.
jamie peacock: Yeah, so if I break the slitting saw... It'll probably break the 6mm end mill that follows it. If it doesn't.
Curt: Right, right. yeah
jamie peacock: um then I just have no parts in the machine.
Curt: I was going to say, yeah.
jamie peacock: because the fixable is just going to face the the the parts off.
Curt: It's blah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: Yeah, you'll be okay, I guess.
jamie peacock: We're running at very low spindle load on these as well. Like it's quite a conservative program, but it just runs.
Curt: Hmm.
jamie peacock: So.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: It's fine. I'm looking for reliability, not speed. Well, a little both, but... Yeah, there's currently 300 bots in the LK.
Curt: Nice. So, yeah, Sarah, are they on a string, or are they, like, just intermixed in the chip tray?
jamie peacock: Nope.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: theyre everywhere
Curt: ah
jamie peacock: They're heavy enough for that I'd really wash down the the chip shoots. So like I'll power on the machine and then I'll just pick them up Mitch Minson's on and picked him up out of the machine.
Curt: ah Okay.
jamie peacock: and then I'll go look in the chip tray if there are any in there.
Curt: Okay, okay.
jamie peacock: The shavings I'm making from this job are friggin tiny so They stick out like a sore thumb. It's easy to find them.
Curt: Oh, okay. That's nice.
jamie peacock: Yeah, I'm using a corn cob end mill so it's really small really small shavings.
Curt: Okay, i yeah, I forgot. i was gonna say because i lose like if on my part offs in the lathe like if i lose a part i'm just like well see you you're in the next dimension because i will never find you in lathe turnings
jamie peacock: Yeah, no. parts also really small These are small, but they're not. Absolutely freaking tiny.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Um... They're locked. Yay big. Um... So compared to the shavings, they're freaking huge.
Curt: Sure. Makes sense.
jamie peacock: But yeah, we've got... a few hundred of them. Then I need to know. post -process and send for heat treats. And then on Monday or tomorrow, I've got to go see the knife -making guys.
Curt: Cool.
jamie peacock: They've got in Instant Blue. which is a bluing
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: liquid So then I've got to set up a series of tanks to basically... Paul's come back from Heat Treat. They get ultrasonics. They get... um as stonewashed.
jamie peacock: water rinse Bluing. water rinse dewatering oil. and then lasered after that.
Curt: Oh, cool. Okay.
jamie peacock: Yo. So i've got I'm building up the whole process.
Curt: Cool.
jamie peacock: Um, But yeah, I got very very frustrated with Chana this week.
Curt: Why's that?
jamie peacock: Trying to buy stuff from them Ugh.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: so i was going to buy it insert boxes
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: I'm not cool.
Curt: Right.
jamie peacock: send me a pro forma invoice. oh no we don't have stock it's now made to order minimum i'm like okay cool off it like You told me I could order 100 of each box. Now you're telling me I have to have them custom manufactured? Cool, go away.
jamie peacock: I'm now printing boxes. trying to source NGCs. What a freaking nightmare. no you can get 100 packs no problem then i know your minimum order quantity is 10 000. I'm like, cool. So you fucked me around for a week.
jamie peacock: Um... The flag ranges are finally shipped, so that was tedious as well. but those have shipped. And I think the NTCs, we're going to recommend the use of NTCs. We're not shipping with NTCs.
jamie peacock: but we'll have a link to just buy it off amazon it's like seven dollars Um,
Curt: Yeah. Fair. Yeah, that's fair.
jamie peacock: because shipping oil is also a little bit of a...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: dodging maneuver um i was considering just buying tubes of it here and say ten dollars for a tube we ship it with your order but it then starts to make the packaging a whole story.
Curt: Right. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Because the smallest tube is 100 grams
Curt: Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
jamie peacock: which is like a lifetime supply, so I think it's good.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: like um is what it is we recommend the use of anti -seize If you don't use it, it's not my problem. We told you to. like you should have NTCs if you're running anything with insert tools you should have NTCs
Curt: I... I was just going to say, anybody running is going to have some kicking around.
jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah.
Curt: so Yeah.
jamie peacock: Exactly. um so I need to finish the packaging design but I can't until I've got the flag wrenches I literally took the picture they sent me and traced the flagrant shape. and made it somewhat dimension parametrically so I can tweak it once they arrive and I can actually get my dimensions off of it.
Curt: ah
Curt: Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: But it's gonna also be
Curt: That's right.
jamie peacock: Good for the team. the packaging.
Curt: Smart.
jamie peacock: So...
Curt: your other Yeah, your other stuff is.
jamie peacock: Yeah, good for the T.
Curt: so
jamie peacock: yeah four by four Um... the inserts will ship flat but i'm going to make slots that you can put them upright So like you're able to store 20 inserts, for instance, upright. Um... with the flag range.
jamie peacock: And then when they ship, that box ships with four inserts or six inserts or whatever the the minimum order I decide to do is. Um, And then as you buy more, you can stack them in the same thing.
Curt: Gotcha. Yeah, yeah.
jamie peacock: or different flavors or whatever.
Curt: Okay, sweet.
jamie peacock: So yeah I need to figure out the packaging stories now. uh insert boxes would have been ideal but It is what it is.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Lock.
Curt: i don't know if i said on the last podcast but after seeing your printed little holder i was like That's better that looks better like I changed my mind.
jamie peacock: um
Curt: That looks better.
jamie peacock: Rick and Zosia print them out of PTGCF.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: Dude, it looks it doesn't look like a print.
Curt: Yeah. Oh, I know. Yeah. Yeah. yeah
jamie peacock: I'm Locke. Yeah, I might do that. it doesn't need it but it'll look fucking cool it'll look Not. Princeton. at that point So...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: I have a role of it. We will see.
Curt: so yeah i think i think it probably has the same look as because i do a lot of abs glass fiber now And it just...
jamie peacock: Similar look.
Curt: it it looks centered like the part looks centered you're just like there's no like you can't see the yeah
jamie peacock: Yes. Dave came past with... With some prints that he did and they look like they are It's an HP Jet Fusion.
Curt: yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Same flavor.
jamie peacock: It looks like a same kind of story.
Curt: Yeah, yeah.
jamie peacock: That's what it looks like to me. Um,
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: But yeah, it was interesting. One second. Well, no. hence
Curt: Oh. but
jamie peacock: Fucking hell, sorry.
Curt: Ooh.
jamie peacock: I don't want to sneeze on my microphone.
Curt: but It's the humans.
jamie peacock: would have given extra sound effects. um
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: Yeah, so it looks like it's censored, which is really cool. Um,
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: but yeah we'll we'll see i might have a printing bottleneck now
Curt: fair Fair. Well, that one's easy to solve.
jamie peacock: So, um...
Curt: man
jamie peacock: That's easy to solve like the beefcake is actually I'm chatting to a guy um who built an old ass r3 style printer and loves it i'm like dude The beefcakes are for sale if you want them. That thing hasn't turned on since June.
Curt: Mm.
jamie peacock: lark i'll give you a screaming deal on it just get it out of my out of my fucking space.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: I'll put a... Put another A1 here or I'll put an A1 at work. whatever.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Um... Yup. it's like an I'll take an A1 and it can be my travelling printer. It can come home if I need to print stuff.
Curt: Totally. Yeah, exactly.
jamie peacock: So, yeah, I don't know. We'll we'll see. Yeah. it's been ah It's been an interesting week, like trying to figure out the process on this, but also trying to deal with... With all the other workload that is work loading because Cole's away this week since Wednesday he's been on a fishing trip
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: uh
Curt: Oh, I see.
jamie peacock: Yes, I've been running the lathes
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: but it's also resulted in me being very frustrated with a bunch of small things in the workshop. And then getting really annoyed because I realized that I've been managing by application.
Curt: Right.
Curt: Okay, yeah, yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah, so I started listening to the E -Myth and then I got really angry because I've listened to the E -Myth. many times and I'm like, I've done all the things wrong. I've literally done everything I shouldn't do.
jamie peacock: so yeah i was a little bit rageful this week about that um So now we're getting SOPs in place, like... There's stupid shit like... the good way to why the fact of the good way why was the uh chip return not cleaned out every week. like It takes.
jamie peacock: 10 minutes. Why is it? Thank you. It's because I haven't said it needs to be done. I haven't put it in an SOP. It's on me.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: like These parts, I'm looking at the parts and I'm like Mm. I haven't issued a drawing for them It was made by YOLO. and when i make it i know where the tolerances need to be but unfortunately carl is not a telepath probably for a good reason Um,
jamie peacock: so now i need to shoot drawings on that like it's it's pointing out all the flaws in the process
Curt: Absolutely. Yeah, totally.
jamie peacock: So. dealing with all of that that bullshit on the back end but yeah we will get on top of it and get it all squared away Um, But yeah, a bunch of small things were frustrating me at the workshop this week.
Curt: I mean... That makes sense. but Yeah.
jamie peacock: So trying to get on top of that then. Jump. pivot the the roles a little bit to be more in the manager position which is annoying because i like making parts
Curt: Oh yeah. No, I routinely think about that book and I'm just like, I'm like, man, I am so far, like like for certain instances, certain instances, I'm like, I'm doing great in this aspect. And then other instances when I'm doing something, I'm like, I am so far down what is considered like the bad road. I'm like, well. I'm like what am i what am i gonna do like the only way forward is forward so i'm like i could change it but like Yeah.
jamie peacock: So...
Curt: This is...
jamie peacock: i was chatting to danica about it yesterday while we're driving i'm like we need to make blank s sop sheets When we need to issue an SOP, I need to be able to quickly write down what the SOP is, and then you type it up, laminate it, and stick it up somewhere.
jamie peacock: Lock.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: i need you to be at the workshop more often that this shit doesn't get kicked down the road because the problem is it gets kicked down the road because there's more important things to do.
Curt: Oh absolutely.
jamie peacock: Or at least what I perceive to be more important, like actually making money.
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: um And. Yeah, so having her around more often will help. And again. Need the fucking ceiling boards so she has somewhere to work.
Curt: Yeah, well, like like we've said a million times, it's... It's easy to spot fires or to put out fires when... everything is on fire like when your entire world is on fire it's like okay well i can just Put out what you can and carry on.
Curt: so
jamie peacock: Exactly. So here we are. trying to Deal with that. Fun. story um But yeah, we'll get on top of it. Fucking minor, minor inconveniences. that I couldn't get a hold of the guy who does our cleaning and saw cutting and whatnot this week. I'm like, what the fuck?
jamie peacock: He now comes every Wednesday.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: I don't care if we have work for him or not. He comes every Wednesday and he cleans the workshop. If they're saw cutting, fucking bonus.
Curt: Sure. yeah
jamie peacock: like saw cutting they're cutting one fucking piece of aluminum at a time Wah. Put the whole stack and cut them all at once walk away leave it to run
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: while we're running the steel blade at half speed when we could be running the alley blade at full speed. Fuck.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah I get it.
jamie peacock: Wow. Wow. time on the shows. And then yeah I need to discuss with everybody. about how to pack shit away because they're fucking hiding stuff. or packing it in the corner where you can't get to it.
jamie peacock: Wah.
Curt: something
jamie peacock: We're gonna need to use it. Let's put it where it's easy to access So, I've got to...
Curt: Yeah, yeah
jamie peacock: do a bunch of fun things i need to go buy a bigger vacuum for the coolant skimming like wise Why is the coolant skimming vacuum? the other side of the workshop. It gets used every day or two. keep it by the machines that it gets used with.
jamie peacock: Why are you walking?
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: like Yeah. So i yeah I just need to be better at... at delegating and instructing and whatnot. So it's gonna be fun when Carl listens to this.
Curt: Well, and then the whole aspect of you like the why aspect of you being like why is it moved because you might that might They'd be like, oh, because of blank, blank, blank. And you're like, oh shit. Okay. That makes a ton of sense, but it's stupid, but I get it. Like, at least then you guys can think of.
Curt: logical ways.
jamie peacock: the scale The scale gets put behind a cupboard. It gets used on a daily basis. Why are we rummaging around behind the carpet to get it? Make a space for it. Leave it in the open.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Why are we hiding stuff on a daily basis like this is a bunch of stupid shit going on?
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: So. We'll get on top of that and try and... optimize things. John, like the...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: the machines were running flat out. but it needs to be a case of okay we start today we skim the tramp oil Machines get cleaned out and then we start production. Because if you don't do shit like that, it just...
jamie peacock: Compounds. Oh fuck, now the machine's leaking. It's now an hour to fix it. when it could have been 15 minutes.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: and yeah that kind of shit is just yeah it's getting through the cracks and we'll put processes in place we'll come right with it but
Curt: Yeah.
Curt: Yeah, I was at...
jamie peacock: Yeah. oh
Curt: That's all it takes. And like I said, the the little things that you...
jamie peacock: It's teething pints.
Curt: well and just the little bit you do like maybe you don't get them all but you get one and then at least that one's done Forever.
jamie peacock: yes
Curt: Like. You'd be like, OK, well, now we know that every like. Same thing with mine. is like i replace I replace a desiccant in my... machines because i have a bunch of them that to keep and i just like replace it on the end of the week and it's like does it need it every week All the nominees.
jamie peacock: na
Curt: Excuse me. um
jamie peacock: This is the Sneezing Podcast.
Curt: Yeah. Like, does it need it?
jamie peacock: Bless you.
Curt: No, but, like, now it's, uh... Now it's like, it's in my mind. So just like, I know what happened. So when I, when it's like Monday and I'm like, okay, now it's like. and just I don't think about it anymore. just It just happens.
jamie peacock: Exactly.
Curt: So.
jamie peacock: No, that's that's exactly it.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: so I'm trying to get on bless you again.
Curt: Woohoo, excuse me, two for me.
jamie peacock: Trying to get on top of all these... all of these little things like
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: No. It's not like I want to put a new sink in the... what was gonna be the laser cutting kitchen bathroom. is now just going to be the kitchen bathroom I want to put a new sync in there. for dishes. I don't want dishes in the main workshop.
jamie peacock: that sink that's in the workshop by the back door that needs to be for washing pots Fuck.
Curt: Sure. Yeah.
jamie peacock: I don't want dishes there. like Fuck that. The fridge. can go into the the kitchen bathroom. Um, it doesn't need to be in the main workshop area.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: It's eating up space that... We are running out of space. Like it is a problem.
Curt: Heh.
jamie peacock: So yeah I'm gonna rearrange a bunch of shit
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Just because it's the way it is doesn't mean that's the way it has to be.
Curt: Yeah, yeah
jamie peacock: So yeah, do a bit of rearranging. I need to buy a shelf to put material on. because, yeah. My crate of aluminium offcuts gets packed super densely. I'm like... Cool. Now I can't see what's in there.
jamie peacock: Like what the fuck what?
Curt: Sure, yeah.
jamie peacock: Why is this packed?
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: simon went and repacked it super densely i'm like no it was packed loosely for a reason so that i can rummage through it and find a piece of material when i need a piece of material
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: So yeah, we got to try and get on top of all of that cook so i think i'm gonna put a put a shelf up in that corner and then material can go on the shelf So we'll have aluminum shelf, steel shelf, stainless steel shelf.
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: that we can try just Keep on top of the scrap.
Curt: Yeah, no adds up, makes sense.
jamie peacock: Good job. fun times. Yeah.
Curt: Totally.
jamie peacock: Um... Yeah, I made a new gang block for the good way because we needed one to make the one part move on to the good way
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: because the ENCO is running flat out for the rest of the month.
Curt: good again but yeah i get it But...
jamie peacock: Stop. well no that part i'm losing money on it's very annoying
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Um...
Curt: Oh shit, okay, then nevermind.
jamie peacock: Yeah, it's that one.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: um The problem now, we ordered material and it's all over the show. It's coming in between 10 point. ah 25 .2 and 24 .8. So now before you load a bar, you have to measure it.
jamie peacock: to make sure it's going to fit through the 25 collets
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: and then stack all the ones that are oversized. I want to go, why can't I call it bigger? so that we can we can then run the bigger material.
Curt: Yeah, yeah. Cool.
jamie peacock: Yeah, but that's apparently the spec of the material. It's within the tolerance. For fuck's sakes
Curt: Yeah. Okay, yeah.
jamie peacock: yeah tolerance should be on the negative side on an extruded ball it's not on the positive side
Curt: I agree. But then, like I said, now you just got to find a way, something that works.
jamie peacock: Yep.
Curt: So.
jamie peacock: Like it's one in it's 20 % of the borrowers are oversize?
Curt: and Okay. Yeah.
jamie peacock: So it's like now 20 % of the balls are going to get put aside until we can get a collet to run them because good luck buying a one inch collet in South Africa.
Curt: Oh yeah?
jamie peacock: Yeah, that would be the solution about 1 inch 5C collets. Not a fuck.
Curt: Huh.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: Bummer.
jamie peacock: not a thing So, yeah.
Curt: Probably got within...
jamie peacock: I'm tempted to order one from China.
Curt: Say it probably got one with an arm's reach. I can just send you Got a gang of them, but yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah, um... attempts its order from china but that's going to be two or three weeks out still so
Curt: Exactly.
jamie peacock: I've got some spare orange ones that I can just have wire cut out.
Curt: Yeah.
Curt: Fair. That'll work.
jamie peacock: And then...
Curt: man
jamie peacock: solves the problem. We're at 22 .15 or something. It's a 7 .8. so we'll just cut it out to one one inch and it'll be All good.
Curt: Yeah, okay. Yeah, that'll work.
jamie peacock: No. off again i've got that uh someone with a wire cutter so
Curt: That does help.
jamie peacock: Problem solved.
Curt: Yeah, it does help.
jamie peacock: Yes it does. one of my the customer for this job has a wire cutter Um,
Curt: Sick.
jamie peacock: So.
Curt: Cool.
jamie peacock: You've finally installed your mist suckies.
Curt: Yeah, I've had him sitting under one of my desks here. Because I got him for that deal um through Sile when they...
jamie peacock: yes
Curt: F'd up my machines. so They gave me a deal. So I bought two of them. One for the x5 and one for the Hardinge. And then I bought like. the big fancy like after filter for the hard inch because it's oil And you have to just filter more. So anyways, it's been a...
Curt: Bunch of cash on that thing. and finally got it all i needed to do is buy a vfd like a hundred dollar vfd because it's like it's like 0 .2 kilowatts so it's it's not a lot of power
jamie peacock: it from small girl.
Curt: Um, Yeah. So I put it like like the cheapest one I could buy was like a two kilowatt VFD. um Got that all wired up. and ah Edison. it was a hundred bucks so it's like that's Yeah. Nothing. um ah In that land anyways. And yeah, got it all mounted to the wall. um may use printing to make some brackets for it and i i already had shelf brackets waiting for i literally had everything for it all i had to do was cut a piece of wood paint it black that's where it's stuck on the piping was already ready on the thing so now it's it's good to go Um,
Curt: It's loud. It's a little bit louder than I thought. actually most of the noise is uh from the there's like a little bypass that the oil returns down And.
jamie peacock: ah okay
Curt: I realize most of the noise is just from air whistling out of that little hole. So as soon as I connect, it's a tube that goes to it. plums right in back into the lathe. uh the noise drops significantly and it's just then it's just the kind of the motor noise but I will say that. have it like seeing with the the drum it's a big stainless steel drum like i don't know how Right.
Curt: five, 10 pound ah stainless drum. and then i haven't mounted but just a little bit over head height and then i had to connect to the vfd and i like It like boop on the VFD and it's starting to spool up.
Curt: and i'm like and i'm slowly starting to duck down because i'm like if this goes sideways this is a bomb like just like I'm like, how fast are you going to go?
jamie peacock: it's a
jamie peacock: Fuck.
Curt: But yeah, so it's it hauls. so Hopefully it works.
jamie peacock: They're really nice units. I played with one at Machine Tool Africa two years ago
Curt: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah, I know the agents locally for those ones
Curt: I'm.
Curt: I know it'll work great for like... Cool it. I'm. Concerned that it's not going to be able to take the particulate cart countdown for oil, but I have a meter, so we will see.
jamie peacock: Yes, sir
Curt: by by basically next podcast you'll be able to tell if it works or not so
jamie peacock: Okay. Nice.
Curt: We'll see. Hopefully, because it's like...
jamie peacock: um
Curt: Yeah. Not cheap.
jamie peacock: Have you done any more drilling on the sarl?
Curt: No, it's all ready to go the Drill is still sitting there. Actually, I am going to model. um I did talk about like the the double funnels to get the the coolant.
jamie peacock: yeah
Curt: I'm just going to put two hoses because it's going to be easier. um
jamie peacock: week
Curt: But I'm still gonna. yeah well because i'm like i'm just still gonna be dicking around with those i'm like i want and i want nice good flow so i'm gonna model um just a couple noozles that'll just pointed thing and yeah i'm gonna throw bodies through it probably Probably next week I'll be getting to it.
Curt: Um, And just yeah let it pound through and just see how... it goes it seems happy so
jamie peacock: So are you blanking the material to length on the lathe?
Curt: I'm blanking them to length on the lathe and doing like the OD stuff. Actually, OD is done manually because it just gets a better finish. um Then it'll go into the sile to get drilled through. And then once the sile is done with it, it'll go into the Hardinge to get the...
Curt: Like the.
jamie peacock: the end machine
Curt: bore yeah because then i'll bore the the little ends and thread them just so they're Dead nuts on. Because that that controls everything. There's tolerance on the inner tube, but there's...
jamie peacock: Yes.
Curt: I want everything really tight on the threaded end.
jamie peacock: Okay.
Curt: It'll do that.
jamie peacock: Interesting. I was wondering, so you've are you pre -centering them or are you just... Yeah, you would be pre -centering them.
Curt: yeah since they're already going on the manual aid they're already center turn or they're center drilled so it's yeah it Just put them in the middle. And I don't have enough. I was going to buy. I was going to buy a gang of like inexpensive holders.
Curt: And just... outfit the carousel but i think what i'm gonna do since i'm buying like Or I'm putting like the anchor point on it and then I'm putting new vices on it And I'm like doing all this thing to the mill um I'm greatly... coming like i'm coming up from the table enough that i can reduce my gauge length So...
Curt: I'm gonna keep all because all my tooling is 100 mil 100mm gauge length. I mean, and I like it. It works good, but. if i could go down to like 50 millimeter gauge length i'm gonna gain so much more rigidity So I'm just going to buy nice tooling at like 50 millimeter gauge length and then use all this tooling.
Curt: to hold the the blanks.
jamie peacock: for your drilling.
Curt: Yeah, so.
jamie peacock: No, 100%. That makes sense.
Curt: It's not. yeah i was like i'm still gonna i'm gonna spend a lot more on two holders but i'm like at least then i have like i have good tool tool holders all around then if i have to go if i need one for something else they're all good it's not like oh these are shitty ones don't use them for anything but this so it's like Whatever.
jamie peacock: 100%, that makes sense.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: um and what are you running not your 16s
Curt: Yeah.
Curt: Uh, everything year 16. Yeah. So.
jamie peacock: so you just got one size of color
Curt: I'll stick with that.
jamie peacock: yeah i just i had 12 12 holders arrived this week er 20 and er 16s
Curt: Yeah, I try to stick to those sizes. So.
jamie peacock: Yeah, i've I run quite a lot of EI11. for smaller tools. And then, y 'all.
Curt: Yeah, they are nice.
jamie peacock: I've got like two ER25 holders that came with the machine. It's not a common size for me to use it.
Curt: Oh yeah.
jamie peacock: I've got a couple of ER32s that came with the machine as well. But... but otherwise it's the swarm stuff.
Curt: I would. I would go to DC for like everything. um just because how like how thin the ends are
jamie peacock: it's also surprisingly rigid for how thin it is.
Curt: Yeah, I found that too.
jamie peacock: Locked.
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: Compared to the Ericsson Hydraulic, it's rigid. Like, I smoked a brand new Kyocera Enmel.
Curt: oh
jamie peacock: running keel clamps. It went in into do the adaptive, started chattering, and just exploded the animal.
Curt: Hmm.
jamie peacock: on a hydraulic And up.
Curt: o
jamie peacock: i'd left my dc6 setup
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: I threw it into the machine with an old enamel in it.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: and touched it off, hit go and it ran fine.
Curt: Weird.
jamie peacock: Yeah, so...
Curt: That's bizarre.
jamie peacock: Yeah, the... That Erickson Holder I have thoughts on. It might just end up being the finishing holder. like So I'll have a roughing setup and then... a finishing tool.
jamie peacock: but I'm trying not to fill my carousel with duplicate tools.
Curt: Yeah fair.
jamie peacock: Because. 16 tools is not that many.
Curt: And it's not an issue of like N millimeter tolerance, like where you don't have a high enough precision for a hydraulic.
jamie peacock: Same thing with the um with the eight millimeter it's not the most rigid
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Chatting to Justin. He experienced the same thing with it where they're not the most rigid holders.
Curt: Huh.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: Interesting.
jamie peacock: so i don't know my other hydraulics are fucking rigid my shanks
Curt: Weird.
jamie peacock: Um, but the gauging it on these is quite long
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: Yeah, that might be the... the kind the issue I don't know.
Curt: Could be.
jamie peacock: I'll have a closer look at it, but yeah.
Curt: Hmm.
jamie peacock: It's what it is. complimentary holder.
Curt: Yeah, never fair.
jamie peacock: You get what you pay for. um
Curt: Yeah, yeah, sure.
jamie peacock: But I'm using the April for the stainless steel Dovetail Bosses.
Curt: Mm.
jamie peacock: But I need to go about sampling media and I just Couldn't get out of the shop this week.
Curt: Yeah, I get it.
jamie peacock: It's so... it's problem i'm the only one there so production needs to run we have limited time to run stuff So I literally just can't get out of the shop.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: like I needed to go look for little tubs for grease and I just
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: couldn't get to the shop because need to be there running running the workshop. So. I'm looking forward to having callback.
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: so that the leads can at least run while I'm not there.
Curt: Yeah. I know.
jamie peacock: Good stuff. makes a huge difference.
Curt: Well, even my wife, she was off on this past Friday. And we we have a referendum going here. Anybody, if you're an Albertan and you're listening to this, go vote. It's very important that you do that right now. There's like three listeners. Everyone else doesn't matter. um
Curt: So she's like you want to come out and vote with me and I was like ah Yes, but I'm like, I need to like run. So I'm like, you know what? I'm going to wait till Monday. She's like, cause Monday, she's like, it's going to be crazy. There's going to be people there. I'm like, yes. But Monday, I can have machines running. So then when I leave, I don't feel like I'm spinning my tires. like I'm like, yeah, if it takes three times as long.
Curt: there's machines running and I don't feel bad about it. I can be like, yeah, okay, whatever. so But I get it.
jamie peacock: Yeah, speaking about voting.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: uh saying i don't want to vote because i don't like any of the people that you can vote for is the same as saying I'm not voting because I like all of them the same.
Curt: ahs ah I couldn't agree with you more, dude.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: I could not agree. Yeah, if you want to bitch, you have to vote.
jamie peacock: There's so we've got We've got provincial elections coming up. next month. And I'm like, fucking A, the one party has won my vote. Yeah, it's fucking a meme that went around.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: there It's fucking great. um we'll talk about in the after show because it's a throwback to some dirty things um But yeah, like the the boat the posters are all up now. ah We were driving yesterday. It was the same billboard four times in a row.
Curt: ah o
jamie peacock: like for the for the ruling party i'm like guys stop wasting our tax money please
Curt: yeah I mean...
jamie peacock: Um, Yeah.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: yeah so we'll see they Yeah, it's also stupid shit happening. Yeah, it's quite fun
Curt: I think our stupid shit might trump yours. um That's kind of a...
jamie peacock: ah doubt that
Curt: Kind of punny. Um,
jamie peacock: No dude, I doubt that.
Curt: What?
jamie peacock: I'll...
Curt: Dude.
jamie peacock: ruling party forgot to apply.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: in three of their most important districts. so they're not on the ballot. They forgot to submit the application. They then went to the Independence Electoral Commission. And I, thought oh, we forgot. Can you make an exception? And they turned around and said, no, fuck you.
jamie peacock: You didn't do what you were supposed to do, you're not on the ballot. So they've just lost three of their biggest... their biggest municipalities because they forgot to do the paperwork
Curt: That's rough. That's up there then.
jamie peacock: Yep. It's fucking hilarious. it's great because they're a bunch of clowns and yeah they deserve it So.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah, ours is just based on...
jamie peacock: That's all, yeah.
Curt: ah making our province leave Canada, which is...
jamie peacock: Why the fuck?
Curt: I dude, that's. majority of the thought here but there is a very loud vocal minority that
jamie peacock: There's that story going on down in Cape Town as well.
Curt: wants to leave so
jamie peacock: They want the western province to
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Western province. Eastern Cape? Eastern Cape. Eastern Goat. No Western Cape. Fuck, one of the capes. They want to secede from South Africa. It's like, dudes. That's never gonna happen. Like it's never ever going to happen.
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: You guys are in the middle of fucking Canada.
Curt: its just
jamie peacock: What are they going to do? Neck.
Curt: That's...
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: I like it. I try to usually... be apolitical but in this sense no i'm on like team canada we're stronger as a whole let's what are we doing and but there's
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: people that are adamant that that's the better way to go so you know what i don't care go out and vote i don't care what your opinion is
jamie peacock: There's people who want.
Curt: Just, you have to you have to do it. You have to pick one way or the other.
jamie peacock: Yeah, hopefully they don't pull a Brexit.
Curt: Yeah, that's
jamie peacock: like And that was the funniest shit ever. Lock.
Curt: That's what everyone is saying. like You have to do it because apathy could lead to that.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: like If people are like, eh, we got it in the bag.
jamie peacock: could lead to a Brexit situation.
Curt: Then you get in that stupid situation.
jamie peacock: Yep.
Curt: So anyways.
jamie peacock: Dude. commit things wild Anyway, okay speaking of things that are wild
Curt: Yeah. ah Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: We have Patreons.
Curt: Ooh.
jamie peacock: the patreons make the wheels on the train cart go round and round i just realized we need a new and new audio.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Um.
Curt: That's still a minecart.
jamie peacock: That's a minecart, yes, but I have a new audio that is appropriate for the next four weeks.
Curt: Ooh.
jamie peacock: uh Yes, so all of our Patreons. Let me find the reading thing. So, patrons, they make the wheels on the train go round and round. It is greatly appreciated. All the patronage is going towards... ah Riverside, our podcasting software, and IMTS 2028. so a tribute and yeah then kurtz and i can go drawing at imts it's going to be great We are currently...

Curt: o
jamie peacock: The goal is to find the funniest real existing photograph of this week's featured supporter. Whew, this could be fun.
Curt: Ooh.
jamie peacock: Photos should be funny. relevant and suitable for public sharing.
Curt: wait so i what ah this is all complicated to me what is going on so like
jamie peacock: But just when...
jamie peacock: Thank you.
Curt: We have this guy that we've picked him as a leader. Datapro.
jamie peacock: Yes.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: Later, Proto. Good fucking luck because I don't know how much stuff is on his Instagram.
Curt: So what is...
Curt: Oh, so other people have to find his shit now?
jamie peacock: So now. Yes.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: So they've got to go find his shit. and share it and tag us in it.
Curt: Okay.
Curt: This is very convoluted.
jamie peacock: This... It is. It's Danica. This is going to be complicated as hell, but there will be a full breakdown.
Curt: Go get them.
jamie peacock: In the post. People don't want to know.
Curt: Okay. Okay.
jamie peacock: Um... Yeah. AR photos are automatically disqualified. Um...

jamie peacock: Out of the hat this week.
Curt: So he wins a free... A free vote in.
jamie peacock: Yes. And then anyone who completes the challenge also gets a bonus entry.
Curt: But no.
Curt: hu Oh, I got you. Okay.
jamie peacock: Yes.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: Yes.
Curt: So that's how they win their way. I understand.
jamie peacock: That's how they win their way.
Curt: Sorry, folks, if I'm the...
jamie peacock: So now they've got to go find a picture of him.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Good luck. um Because I don't think he's that much on his Instagram. So it's going to be that's going to be a really challenging one. Um,
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: But yeah.
Curt: So.
jamie peacock: it's then you can get bonus entries uh you have to be entered as well to get a bonus en entry

Curt: I see.
Curt: Who? Who? Who judges the winner? Do we judge the winner?
jamie peacock: I would assume so.
Curt: Could there be more than one winner?
jamie peacock: Either us or Damica. Maybe.
Curt: Can there be more than one? one Maybe...
jamie peacock: Well, well, there's no - well actually, everyone's a winner.
Curt: real fun. Thanks. up
jamie peacock: If you complete the challenge, you get an entry.

Curt: Okay, I'm going to go find just the images. Not that I'm going to do it right now. I'm ahead of you guys. you I have the benefit of doing this now when you haven't even heard it.
jamie peacock: Oh there we go.
Curt: I want to see how many... pictures we have to pick from. Cuz...
jamie peacock: ah don't think many. I don't think many.
Curt: Uh...
jamie peacock: I think that's a really really rough one.
Curt: Oh! Oh, yeah oh there's enough there's enough.
jamie peacock: Okay, they're awesome.
Curt: I don't think there's...
jamie peacock: Okay, cool.
Curt: There's not a lot of this. gentlemen that are publicly available I say that like I have private ones.
jamie peacock: I think it's going to have to come from It's going to have to come from the meetup video.
Curt: That's weird.
jamie peacock: from AJ's meetup video.
Curt: oh no oh i i see some i see some that people could take i've seen some that i would probably use
jamie peacock: Okay.
jamie peacock: nice
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: um Anyway, speaking of patrons, we have a list of top tier patrons.
Curt: yeah all Sorry, sorry, sorry.
jamie peacock: that get their names read out every week. um And that list is Luke from Fabtastic, AJ from Subtract Manufacturing, Jason S, EJ from Nocturnal Welding, The Aussie Machinist, Christian Olson, Charles Watt, Kyle from Ghost Machine. Matt from Off -World Gear, Alex B, John from 2SM Performance and Engine Tricks.
jamie peacock: Matt from Modern Fuel, Josh from Laser Machine, Greg from Tabletop Machine Shop, Ben from Prickly Pear Prototypes, Jesse from Data Proto. Hey! ah Tuck's Garage at Freaky Clamor.
Curt: okay
jamie peacock: Thank you, patrons. You make the wheels on the train go round and round. I think I will have new audio. And it's going to be amazing.

Curt: Oh.
jamie peacock: There you go.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: New sounds. But yeah, so all Patreons can answer for the Freddy. $6 and above get access to the after show every week. And top tier patrons get a shout out every week.
jamie peacock: So. Yeah, go check out the Patreon and you could win a Freddy.
Curt: Sick.
Curt: All right.
jamie peacock: I'm quite excited for my Freddy.
Curt: look
jamie peacock: It's going to be exciting.
Curt: Let this be ah a lesson to everybody that only share online what you are willing to have some random people on a podcast rip apart and repost.
jamie peacock: yes
Curt: so
jamie peacock: Exactly. i'm kind of curious to see what gets posted uh but yeah the full set of rules will be out so i think i'll get down to put them on the load machines website as well That way it's... easily accessible.
Curt: They were also they'll probably be linked in this as you listen to this You can probably click the details and I bet she'll be a link there um So if your brain is bleeding right now, just go read that
jamie peacock: Yes.
Curt: But...
jamie peacock: Not typing at all.
Curt: That's all right. We'll just listen to you type.
jamie peacock: Yes, I'm just putting in the notes so that we don't forget So...
Curt: fair
jamie peacock: Um...
Curt: Let me...
jamie peacock: Reconsidering your daily time value, Kurt.
Curt: ah
Curt: ah That was actually a perfect, I should have segued that into when you were talking about trying to leave your shop. um to do something Because that would have been a great segue, but we'll do this after the fact now. um like what ah i get this one thing a big giant box of card stock And I can only get it from this one. location.
Curt: And I've tried to get it elsewhere. which is fine but they charge me i can drive there it's like 20 minutes to get it but they charge me to pick it up uh so it's like ah it will call right like it's 25 bucks to pick it up at the door Ah.
Curt: so um It's - I mean, it's like a few hundred bucks to buy the box. and It's just not enough. um you order enough from them and they um It's Uline. I just don't. I don't. I like you, Len. as a company i don't like them how they treat their employees i do like because everybody seems to be happy there but what they stand for as a company i dislike so i tried to remove myself from all of the purposes but i can't find this anywhere else um So anyways, I get through them. It's 25 bucks to pick it up.
Curt: ah And then it's. 50 bucks to ship it to me which kind of seems ridiculous because i'm like you're like 15 minutes away i'm like 50 bucks to ship me this box um and i'm like you know what i'll make it worth my while i'll order more stuff so i'm like i i'm like i'll just get some i need some void fill for um i bulk ship a lot of my packages i'm like i'll buy some void fill like Well, then the the shipping goes up to a hundred bucks. I'm like.
Curt: Right because everything is big. So then like you keep doing that and the shipping just keeps. incrementally increasing until you hit freight and then then it's fine again um But so that was a kid. Wait a minute, Kurt. I'm like. sure it's 25 bucks to just drive there and pick it up like i have to pay out of pocket Like, or I pay 50, which is 25 bucks more.
Curt: And I don't go anywhere. And I carry on with my life.
jamie peacock: got
Curt: And then I like. I crunched the numbers of like how many pens I want to be producing and like how many pens I'm likely going to be be producing this month and back. work it to my hourly rate. And I'm like, Oh yeah. That's like, it's stupid for me to. Leave. this place. for any amount of money. like ah Not any amount of money.
Curt: He paid me like a thousand dollars an hour.
jamie peacock: i yeah
Curt: But like. you Even hundreds of dollars an hour, it doesn't...
jamie peacock: Yep.
Curt: make sense like it's still i'm more valuable here so i'm like yep just whatever suck up the shipping cost and just let it roll off you because it's your money ahead this way it sounds stupid but you are
jamie peacock: Well, that's it. like i had a customer come to me this week he's like no we need to discuss he wants to discuss something and he'll come to me because he knows i'm busy at the shop Uh...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Because if I go to him... I lose an hour of my day.
Curt: Oh yeah.
jamie peacock: And... we don't have an hour to spare
Curt: Exactly.
jamie peacock: So he's like don't y 'all come to me.
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: He wants to run some ideas past me. So we're gonna go got cool I'll see you later. I'll put the coffee pot on. um But yeah... working out what your actual value at the shop is. that yeah that's a very hard Sorry. I think to quantify if you're not super busy.
jamie peacock: if you're super busy very easy to just say Hey, fuck it. I can't leave. If you're not super busy, it's kind of difficult to prioritize.
Curt: Well, and it's this one, I think one of the Johns talked about it on the business and machining podcast, which is super passive aggressive sounding, but like I've. I've... kind of done it in the past and like you'd always get this look of being like what are you on? But like,
Curt: Like when someone comes to like like a salesman or something like that. Like. setting a timer and then looking at a timer and like it's just like do you like my the value of my time is monstrous like yeah you're a salesman you want to sit here and chit chat for 15 minutes like do you know what my 15 minutes is worth like and it sounds super douchey when you say it like that But like...
jamie peacock: Spotted.
Curt: You're burning my time.
jamie peacock: It's those 15 minutes. Yes, those 15 minutes need to be made up somewhere
Curt: Yeah.
Curt: exactly yeah you're gonna yeah ah without yeah me talking to whatever blank blank salesman and like unless it is worth more than my time it's like it's
jamie peacock: Yep.
Curt: It's costing me time and majority of the time it's costing me time. So anyway, I avoid all human interactions for a lot of reasons. I just, but.
jamie peacock: I want to fly down to Cape Town to go look at a machine that is an entire day gone. That whole day is gone.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Balsama gets the airport flight on there.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Look at the machine get back to the airport fly home. That's my day gone That's...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: 5am to 7pm. Gone.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: And it's like, is it worth flying to look at the machine? Or do I just... I don't really want to bot slot on the scene. it is new but i would like to go look at it I also can chat to them about some financing options.
jamie peacock: But... Yeah, that's a whole day of production that I'm now. Don't have. I have to make up somewhere. Like, now it goes off.
Curt: Sure, but like...
jamie peacock: Today, I'm going to go to the workshop. I've got to make up hours. Because yesterday I went to site.
Curt: Yeah, well, and that and you looking at the machine, that that kind of makes sense. like That's a big enough purchase.
jamie peacock: Yep.
Curt: like You could very likely... save yourself that money of just flying down there for that date like that that could pan out like
jamie peacock: Yes.
Curt: And it probably will. i's I'd say that's a decent use of time.
jamie peacock: the Yeah. It's not a stupid use of time. Um,
Curt: No, if you have no other way around it. Yeah, for sure.
jamie peacock: Yep. Like, um I can go and trust it. Fucking send me the machine. Whatever. YOLO. uh but i would like to go and play with it on the floor it's the first one that's come into the country Um...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: It's not the first of that brand, but it's the first. of that model. So I would like to go look at it and just poke it with a stick.
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: and see if there's anything I can squeeze them for while I'm there.
Curt: Yep. Now, that seems...
jamie peacock: Not for Texas module and shit like that
Curt: Reasonable.
jamie peacock: um
Curt: Totally.
jamie peacock: But yeah, it's... difficult to justify being out of the shop, especially now with the workload being what it is, to justify being out of the shop for that. That amount of time.
Curt: Yeah, and like and if that's...
jamie peacock: Not today.
Curt: If that's hard to justify, going out to buy oil or something stupid is just like ridiculously hard to justify.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Exactly. Monday, I need to order coolants.
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: I'm out of coolants. Like...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: How did we get to this point? to Fuck knows, but we're out of coolants.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: um So now I need to... or the coolants luckily it's just send an email and then it arrives the raft following day. But, you know, it's stupid shit like that that just eats your day up. I need to do bean counting.
jamie peacock: So I'm... Trying to decide whether I go and I run the lathes today or i run in load more power in the lk have it run for eight hours come back here and do CAD work and admin.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Because I've got I've got to get on top of admin. It's 12 days till I get to give the government money. So I need to get all the admin stuff for that dealt with. and that it's going to eat up a day.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Um.
Curt: Yeah. yeah
jamie peacock: Yeah, I've got... stuff i could put on the lk but it requires a lot of brain power so it's not going to be something i can do while i do the admin
Curt: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I get that too.
jamie peacock: It's a... Yeah, it's the big alley job. And then I quoted, so. So this week got very fun. I was also very annoyed on Thursday because my internet, or Wednesday, my internet went down.
jamie peacock: at the workshop
Curt: Hmm.
jamie peacock: It's been flaky since last week's Sunday. to the point that I burned through eight gigs of data on my phone. Because my phone, if the Wi -Fi goes down, my phone just goes to the data set.
Curt: o
Curt: Right.
jamie peacock: And I was watching YouTube and stuff while I was working.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Speaking of, I think there's actually a link in there. Yes, there is. um My daughter... What the fuck? Uh... Medora Mondays. Peyton
Curt: Oh, yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah, dude, Peyton from Brick Tactical's other thing.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: I was watching those. And yeah, burned through all my data on my phone because my internet kept... dropping out. And then on Wednesday, it shut the bed entirely. and i ended up on a call with the isp for like an hour and a half trying to figure it out eventually i packed my shit up came home sat and did CAD work at home and finished quoting a job and then went back to the shop two hours later.
Curt: Ugh.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: Gross.
jamie peacock: because i needed to quote the job i needed access to my CAD. uh and didn't have access to it because fusion
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: um But yeah, we quoted out ah literally the one job is 50 hours of machining. And now the one was like 35 hours of machining.
Curt: That's a lot.
jamie peacock: So I'm like. Brass is the brass, friends. uh i need to find them on monday and follow up because the drill bush is for this job are close on $10 ,000 worth of drill bushes.
Curt: Oh!
jamie peacock: Like hard and steel drill bushes. I'm like, do you want me to buy them? I'll put a 10 % markup and sell them on. or you can buy them directly.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Good luck.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: You guys can choose. they need to make that payment in the next four days. if they want to have the stuff here by the sixths.
Curt: Yeah. yeah
jamie peacock: Knock. You can choose, friends. uh but now this whole job has just been a total utter show uh but we make a good amount of money on it so That's fine.
Curt: Helps helps cushion the pain. Yeah
jamie peacock: The problem yeah problem is that it's eating up like three weeks of my capacity. Three or four weeks?
Curt: Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: And I'm going to run Tuftal. which is horrid.
Curt: oh You need like a Freddy or something, yeah.
jamie peacock: So yeah if only I had a Freddy to clean out the machine
Curt: I was gonna say.
jamie peacock: Um, Yeah.
Curt: We got to do our.
jamie peacock: All right. But even that, like the Freddy's going to arrive, I don't know that I want to use it on the lathes because we run two different coolants.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: And I don't want it to get ruined. So Monica may just be left for the lades. And. I ran the Freddy 4. for the LK and for the Zoppo or whatever. So we will...
Curt: Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: we'll see what what i decided to do that but like yeah We... We shall see. But yeah, the tough little stuff is... The material cost is not huge.
jamie peacock: but the hours of machining are wild. Sorry. what it is i've yolo priced all the stuff i've just estimated cycle times a little bit on the hind but i've estimated so i'm not sitting and programming everything now
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: until I've got the order.
Curt: Totally. Yeah, yeah, I get that.
jamie peacock: Yeah. So. we will we will see and some of it's meant to be recurring the 50 hours is made to be every month. Oh.
Curt: oh
jamie peacock: 100 hours every two months. So... if that's the case. um gonna have some spindle capacity issues
Curt: Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Especially because it's all phenolic, so when I change over that's all that runs until I'm done.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: But.
Curt: Well, I mean...
jamie peacock: listen Less than ideal.
Curt: Yeah. count the count the chickens in your hand too though like let's see
jamie peacock: So. 100%.
Curt: That's the one.
jamie peacock: These guys... In my experience with them, if they said they're gonna place the order, they'll place the order. It may just take longer than you expect.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: Anything that's been they said it'll come it may take six months to come but it will come So yeah, we'll see We'll see what happens with this. Not going to hold my my breath too tight. Um, But also trying to make sure I've got capacity for any of the work holding stuff that... i do because the last thing i want is to be getting a bunch of orders there and then not have capacity to fulfill said orders.
Curt: yeah Yeah, exactly. Yeah. yeah
jamie peacock: Yeah, it's ah it's a double -edged sword there. like But also I can. take on tool steel work if i really want to I've got feeds and speeds that work for it now, so... If I want to go that route, I can go that route with the new machine.
Curt: Yeah, I mean... helps because then like i said you're not missing ah you don't have that like missed opportunity cost as well so
jamie peacock: yeah So I'll chat to the guys and I'll build in that buffer that if I need. to make the machine payment and I can run Toolsteel. Fuck. I'll tune it up for that.
Curt: Sure.
jamie peacock: and then i've got the ability to switch over and have a machine running tool steel It can take all day, I don't care. I've got another spindle doing other stuff. because that that's the problem like switching over to your tool still is slow
Curt: Totally.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: it's not a fast process machining it, or it can be fast, but then your tools aren't lost.
Curt: Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: And yeah, I've got fees and speeds that actually work now.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: But yeah, I went and looked at the next five yesterday.
Curt: m
jamie peacock: And then the wake up is back. It's a very nicely built the little machine.
Curt: Ooh, okay. Thank you. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Yes. I kind of.
Curt: Yeah. Hmm.
jamie peacock: want two of them to go next to each other but uh yeah a 600 travel machine is a more appropriate
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: Choice? especially at the process like the process differences Was it like 12 % price difference? I may as well go for the bigger machine.
Curt: Yeah, you were showing me it's...
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: It's so close, that yeah. Yeah, I'd go bigger than you.
jamie peacock: Yeah, and 21 ATC. At BBT. So yeah, kind of makes sense to go with the bigger machine.
Curt: Yeah, exactly you're building bigger -ish parts, so.
jamie peacock: Siyah.
jamie peacock: Exactly. i want to be able to move my stuff between any of the machines without any real issues.
Curt: Yeah, that makes sense. yeah
jamie peacock: So, like, I don't think that Zoppo's got... a tool setter, but that I can fix. That's like really. minor issue to fix. I just bar one and bolt it to the table. Um,
jamie peacock: Bad y 'all. Uh... The Slowio is for sale.
Curt: Ooh, okay.
jamie peacock: I have decided.
Curt: Yeah, let it let it leave.
jamie peacock: Let it leave. I need to move it and do but give it a bit of love before it leaves. um i need to replace the tool setter and it's like if i'm gonna sell it i need to replace the probe it's got a really short Dad. T S one or something. um But... the context get a bit sticky every now and again.
jamie peacock: So I'm just going to buy one of those cheap.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: China probes and put that in instead wire probe then If you manage to crash it, you just buy another one and carry on with your day.
Curt: Totally. Yeah, fair. Yeah.
jamie peacock: so whoever buys it is going to have to get some training on how to run it but
Curt: good har
jamie peacock: I think for the... For what it is. should be able to get a decent amount of money for it and i can just go away.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah totally.
jamie peacock: it's compared to everything else on the market. It's going to be on the. Somewhat cheaper side, but more capable side. for what i want for it so i'll put it out to the world and we will see what happens I haven't actively tried to sell it yet.
Curt: Cool.
jamie peacock: Um, But yeah, I've decided it can it can leave.
Curt: Is that still at home? Or did you bring it to the shop?
jamie peacock: That's at the shop. Let's go to the shop.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: I ran it this week while LK was running.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: uh we use it for like one job
Curt: Oh, okay, okay.
jamie peacock: There's two jobs for one customer that we use it for.
Curt: Gotcha.
jamie peacock: And those could... technically go on the lk I don't really want to, but...
Curt: Gotcha.
jamie peacock: they could um
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: They could go on LKL or Zop or whatever. i couldn't I can make a plan to run the job. Um, We're machining our potting compound in a... sensor.
Curt: Right, I think I remember this.
jamie peacock: Or I just tell the customer. Bring me all the sensors. This machine's leaving. Lock.
Curt: Sure. Yeah, yeah sure.
jamie peacock: when the machine goes i don't do the job anymore sorry it's not really it's not that lucrative that i'm willing to keep a machine for it
Curt: Yeah.
Curt: Yeah, that might be the way to do it then, honestly.
jamie peacock: Like across the year. across the year we might do a thousand dollars worth of these parts
Curt: Oh, yeah, that's no. Worth it, really. even
jamie peacock: It's not worth it. the machine for it.
Curt: So even considering the Price difference between our worlds.
jamie peacock: yeah
Curt: That's still probably not a ton
jamie peacock: Not worth it.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: um No, I mean, we do we did, it was 1 ,200 rands worth of stuff we did in about an hour. it's like wo Um,
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: it's inconvenient, it's dusty, and I don't want it. So right now I still do it to help them out, but yeah I just sent them an email this week saying, hey, your end is rapidly approaching. We suggest that you order stuff before any orders before the middle of November.
jamie peacock: We'll be fulfilled this year. Otherwise. Next show. So best you plan accordingly.
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: luck Place your orders now. our machines are at capacity until november So... I want to plan their production in between now. all other stuff.
Curt: Yeah, yeah
jamie peacock: Good. I need to be a bit more proactive about planning their production. So.
Curt: Huh. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Tell me about your monster prints, Kurt.
Curt: it just ah It just finished. I don't think the mic picked that up. but went do do do little till you did it um
jamie peacock: ah Yeah, they sing.
Curt: Yeah, it ah i just I printed this giant, it's a riser for the H2D because like the AMS sits on top of the glass. Which is cool, but like... I want access to that glass panel. Like if I want to print TPU, you kind of have to direct feed it and then. I have to remove everything. And I'm just like.
Curt: or sorry if you want to print really soft tpu which i do want to do for certain instances so anyways i was like i want to make my life as easy as possible with this printer because that's the thing i found with it is like if it's just sitting and filaments are waiting in like ams units or whatever and like it's just
jamie peacock: You use it.
Curt: I send it. I use it all the time. I used it all last week for dumb things where I'm like, I'm like, I should machine this or maybe I could cut this. I'm like, wait a minute. I spent 10 minutes designing it in Fusion, just sent it to the printer. I'm like, I will print this. If it blows up because it wasn't strong enough. Whatever. But if it doesn't... I've just saved myself like an hour of time. Trying to. fiddle around with something else. um Anyways, long story short, say uh. I printed this enormous riser.
Curt: um that goes on the machine and i printed it all out of abs
jamie peacock: you Don't say.
Curt: It's huge, dude. It's like. four kilos of filament into it or something like that. um So yeah, it's I'm quite liking it. it's ah It's very nice. It gets everything out of the way. I can access the top. It has little attachments so I can print TPU. It just once was. Just once again, like super simplify.
Curt: The. barrier of doing all this so yeah
jamie peacock: yes
Curt: i like it I'm just quite impressed because it was like a lot of like 16 hour prints. And, uh, big print.
jamie peacock: and it all just worked.
Curt: And like full. build volume like 300 by 300 by whatever and uh yeah they all just came out perfect dead flat like i could put them on my granite plate and like they suck on So I'm like, that's impressive for ABS.
Curt: Yeah, it was really cool.
jamie peacock: yeah So my mate my mate Dave came past. He's production printing on his two A1 minis. And...
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: i was like i'm having some issues so he messed with my printer settings now it's printing freaking flawlessly
Curt: Oh really? Cool.
jamie peacock: Like he's production printing the the gay fly fishing bags.
Curt: Oh.
jamie peacock: um
Curt: Sure, right? Yeah
jamie peacock: Yeah, and The Princey's getting off. phenomenal like it normally turns the bag around in about a week
Curt: oh
jamie peacock: Um, Someone ordered three bags and wants them in like two days. He's like, there are not enough hours between now and then to actually do this.
Curt: Cool.
jamie peacock: So I think he might have bought another printer um But yeah, like I was actually just looking up if PETG is acetone resistant.
Curt: Oh. Yep, I can. you You can use it. It's not super. but I've used it with Aston Watts.
jamie peacock: what Uh, y 'all, I'll just... print more trays. for washing and bluing these the inserts I just want to print something.
Curt: You'll be okay. Yep.
jamie peacock: some stuff that i can little trays that i can move the parts between in batches of like 100 so throw 100 pots into it
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: Washington Ultrasonic. Through water rinse. dry it off but but i want to make it a closed cage so that i can blow it off and blow all the shit out without the parts flying away because that is super super annoying
Curt: Yeah. yeah
jamie peacock: So I was thinking of just printing two sides they go together and then the the top and bottom layers just having none and having the info to make a mesh.
Curt: Yep. Beep, beep, beep, beep.
jamie peacock: Now. Super. super easy mode and then drop it in the balloon compound and shake it around to get it to touch everywhere
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: and then water rinse and then dewatering oil. but trying to keep everything contained so I can move it through the batches quickly.
Curt: Yeah, I would i think PTG would work for you.
jamie peacock: So.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: I don't know if it does in Ultron something different. Mark.
Curt: that I mean, it's so cheap. Cheap to try. like
jamie peacock: Exactly.
Curt: Yeah. Go nuts.
jamie peacock: Like yeah, you're a bad influence. And I now want a bigger, print bigger more expensive printer. Well done. Um,
Curt: Sorry dude.
jamie peacock: Yeah, that's what it is. Um, Yeah. Also, last note on the document there. Zero points are awesome.
Curt: Oh yeah, yeah. What is that?
jamie peacock: So I modeled my Zendaya vases.
Curt: Heh heh. Amen.
jamie peacock: and the soft jaws.
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: and made a parameter to set the distance between set soft draws.
Curt: Mm hmm.
jamie peacock: So you... to have a something you want to machine you drag in that model You break the link? You adjust the jaw size, you Boolean subtract, and then you machine your jaws, you machine your part with the same zero point.
Curt: Oh, yeah. Okay, I get you. Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Super super magic Um, But yeah. ah Chatted to Joshua this week quite a bit. about his little bosses. and they i've got anchor point studs going to him now I made custom shorties.
Curt: Cool, I have a...
jamie peacock: That will fit in there. And yeah, we chatted.
Curt: I sent him a message, yeah.
jamie peacock: Hmm. Um, See y 'all. We... I'm excited. I'm super excited to get those vices. Those vices will let me push the The job that's running for eight hours now? up to 16.
Curt: Oh, cool. Nice. nice
jamie peacock: Back with...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: relative ease. um just with the two vases. Um... So yeah, quite excited to get those vases in. Now I just have to be a little bit patient.
Curt: Me too.
Curt: They're pretty I know I'm excited too. I got in on the pre -order.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: I'm like, no, I gotta get two of these. So yeah, i' I'm jazzed
jamie peacock: Yep. it's It's going to be great. um Yeah, quite excited to... to play around with those when they they do come in.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: He's done the tests he's been doing on them as well. like jaw lift tests and the machine he's doing on them It's impressive.
Curt: Soon. As soon as I saw that jaw lift test with the measurements, I was like... damn i was like that is very for a to make something that slips and moves and clamps. And. to still hold that kind of precision.
Curt: impressive. I'm impressed.
jamie peacock: So I was chatting to him about his soft jaws, aluminium soft jaws.
Curt: Like that's a. Titan.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: and i think he's going to add a hole on the side so when you put the soft jaw on You tighten a screw from the side and it pushes the jaw over. So that it repeats. in your x -axis as well. Um, Obviously.
jamie peacock: I would make one jaw that goes back in front and they just go opposite directions, but they go opposite directions the same amount.
Curt: Yes.
jamie peacock: Or they go opposite directions and you've seen your chores.
Curt: Exactly, yeah.
jamie peacock: It doesn't matter. So we're chatting about some.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: somebody is there about how to do that and then i think he's going to get the left -handed anchor point that i have
Curt: Oh, okay.
jamie peacock: to play with.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: Then he can also play with it and test it and do whatever.
Curt: Cool.
jamie peacock: So, I've got to... I've got that all set aside, I just need to throw it in a box and send it to him.
Curt: Sick. sick sick sick
jamie peacock: yeah and then i found i found my mechanical anchor point that i did the bukkake blast and no job on it
Curt: Oh, right. ya
jamie peacock: just in a box so yeah i think i'm gonna build that up for myself so my plan now is to build up four anchor points and put them on the shelf for when i want to put them on a new machine.
Curt: Mm -mm.
jamie peacock: because i want to put the spacing the same on both machines so i can just move things between them
Curt: Mm hmm.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Same offsets, same same everything.
Curt: Peace.
Curt: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
jamie peacock: So I'm done.
Curt: That's the way to go.
jamie peacock: that is definitely the way to go so yeah that is the the intended plan i'll still need to work out your anchor point story but we'll discuss that later
Curt: Dude, I even told like i told Josh, I was like... Because he's like, oh, sweet. Thanks. to i'm like And I'm like, bump me to like the next presale if you have to. Because I'm like. I'm probably not going to be messing with them until at least January. So I'm like, I'm not in any rush. like i'm like and same thing i bought two of them for your anchor point i'm going to run them ideally sideways so like Because there's always an instance where I want to clamp.
Curt: one big piece of material to do something stupid on it and that's what these vices are for just to be like
jamie peacock: yeah
Curt: I need vices. for the things that i don't have like soft jaws or like all the stuff that i normally use like i just need to hold this thing can i just hold it in something and that's where these will come i mean i'm going to use the soft jaws for like the little
jamie peacock: that who goes it
Curt: All kinds of things, but... That's basically what I want them for. It's just two good vices. so Yeah.
jamie peacock: ex exactc And yeah, they they look like really nice little bosses. I'm quite excited. Because my little China bosses, they do the trick, but... Yeah, they could be better. so i may end up with an with four of them at some point.
Curt: I was... tough
Curt: I was telling my wife, nothing... pleases me more than being able to support my friends. and put shit in my machine that works like that is such a cool thing and like to be able to buy like and ah like between your anchor point and like and Joshua's vices.
Curt: And then Ken's. uh flex vices that i use like i'm sure i'm missing someone else that sell something else that i use but this is like it's so cool to be able to like just buy shit from your friends and it's good stuff too it's like i don't even have to like pretend it isn't so i mean i can't speak about joshua's stuff it looks good so far i haven't played with it but
jamie peacock: Yeah. Nah, 100%. Like we were... said
jamie peacock: So Joshua and I were chatting about, I'm like, dude, make it anchor point compatible. It buys us both credibility. Because now you've got a product that's compatible with this.
Curt: Absolutely.
jamie peacock: with 52 millimeter anchor point and they're like oh what the fox anchor point it must be legit because it's on the list here and then
Curt: Absolutely.
jamie peacock: I've got... Compatible products, flux fast. firm vice like i can you build the list on both sides and it
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Sends people both ways in theory.
Curt: Yeah, exactly. yeah Everybody wins.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: yeah
jamie peacock: Yeah. I got a message yesterday while I was grabbing a cup of coffee. to say that the four anchor points arrived safely in California and they were referred to as artwork. I'm like, Yes.
Curt: o Pretty. nice that's nice
jamie peacock: Yes. Bye -bye. the correct term for them. Like, they are pretty as fuck.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: a lot of a lot of time and effort goes into making them as pretty as I can.
Curt: They're nice. They're really... Yeah.
jamie peacock: I want them to be nice.
Curt: I... I'm not going to lie. If people make and that's honestly. I mean, ah you're my friend, of course, but like the fact that you make. <unk>re You're like, you're zero point.
Curt: Pretty? I like that. Like, I'm going to look at it daily. If it looks like a bag of ass, it's going to be like, well, so it's like.
jamie peacock: yeah A hundred percent. Needs to look pretty.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Um...
Curt: just make it look cool yeah we have the ability so
jamie peacock: Yeah. 30. Exactly. Um... Yeah, I have a thought about your your... anchor point and vast situation but we'll chat about that after the show um Because there's some cool things about that boss That, uh... would make it very easy to configure in many different ways.
Curt: I, there was so many things I've already been thinking about. So I'm just like.
jamie peacock: So yeah, we'll chat about that between the shows.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: uh
Curt: Mmm. Hmm.
jamie peacock: Let's make Joshua have to go listen to the after show to find out what we're going to discuss.
Curt: Boo! Just get absolutely bad mouth in the whole time.
jamie peacock: Um, Yeah. Yeah, 100%.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: That's the plan. Um... Before I forget again... um madara mondays there will be a link in the description really cool video series of Peyton from Brick Tactical making a Bangle or fucking... wrist dangle too.
Curt: Yeah, that works. That carries over here anyways.
jamie peacock: wrist chain, yeah, fucking whatever, the process of making that machine out of 303 stainless steel.
Curt: Racelet.
jamie peacock: Freaking cool. been a very interesting series to listen to.
Curt: o
jamie peacock: I'm now mostly up to date with it. So every Monday, I look forward to watching his videos. So I thought I would share it because people might be interested.
Curt: Sick. Okay. I think I have it on my like watch list. I don't know if I've actually watched one yet. so
jamie peacock: I thoroughly enjoyed it. uh danik and i shot a bunch of footage yesterday at the machine tool show And... i want to try and start a video series Workholding Wednesdays, where it's just a two or three minute video going into some form of work holding that we do that's weird.
Curt: I approve of this.
jamie peacock: weird or unique work holding on like a wednesday like
Curt: I watch it.
jamie peacock: this is how we use the kill clamps in this application or this is how we use the inserts of the sawa
Curt: I'll watch it
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: This is a vase. We use it to hold things in a vase.
Curt: who
jamie peacock: No.
Curt: please Please do.
jamie peacock: Yeah, I'm sure we can't come up with we can come up with a bunch of... of pretty straightforward videos Cheers. Sharing what's... or what do we use things for. like that's on the list of stuff i need to make a list of all the videos i want to shoot regarding these little inserts. Like there's a million uses for them.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: One is holding excluded material.
Curt: You have?
jamie peacock: in a fixture.
Curt: You have to make them.
jamie peacock: Because they're so small. you can stagger them.
Curt: Oh, good. Yeah.
jamie peacock: So that you can move them if your materials undersized you can move them to the
Curt: Mmm.
jamie peacock: And more. close to themselves you can clamp different size pieces of of extruded stock Because EJ is running into that somewhat hard right now. We ordered four inch and the came in at
Curt: Right, right, right
jamie peacock: under and now pitbulls don't have enough travel
jamie peacock: See y 'all.
Curt: yeah Yeah, I get you.
jamie peacock: many options. Sorry, you were saying?
Curt: Yeah. i say you have to make it like those like uh the i don't know i like in like trade school whatever we had to watch like those old videos that were shot in like the 50s or 60s.
jamie peacock: you
Curt: Where it's like. The one I remember, was it was it was a one around soldering. And they're like. first you heat the but then you put the fly then it's just like And then they're like, let's watch that again in slow motion.
Curt: But they didn't have the technology to shoot at high frame rate.
jamie peacock: that yeah
Curt: So the guy just did everything really slowly.
jamie peacock: Oh that's amazing!
Curt: And you didn't notice it until the solder hit the iron. And then you saw it it still melted at the same speed.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: You're like, oh, he's just moving slower. you like Yeah.
jamie peacock: That's so good. I was like, you know, if I could cigarette in the mouth. And if I can film the video, yeah.
Curt: Yeah, basically.
jamie peacock: Um, Yeah, those old videos are freaking great.
Curt: Oh yeah. Yeah. ah
jamie peacock: But yeah, thought I'd chart them out first.
Curt: Okay.
jamie peacock: um What is in your Google box? Apparently nothing.
Curt: ah Zero. So let's go with your Google box. Then I will quickly open mine.
jamie peacock: Okay.
Curt: I forgot to populate it.
jamie peacock: I've spent the week looking at bottles and jars for anti -seize and I've now decided to screw that people can buy their own anti -seize.
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: Um, looking up instant instablack Um, which is way less racist than it sounds it's an alternative bluing fluid for making steel parts black. um Looking up RBC totes or RBC totes because I need somewhere to store old coolants until I can get it taken away.
jamie peacock: So I've been trying to...
Curt: Yep.
jamie peacock: find somewhere to buy those online. uh pill and dauber which is where we did nuclear enrichment. but one of the places for our nuclear program back in the 80s.
Curt: Oh cool.
jamie peacock: uh Yeah, it turns out it drove past a while back. It's in Hottie Parties where I was and like the road we drive on is called Pelindaba Road. So kind of cool going into the history of our nuclear program.
jamie peacock: Um... looking at souls, and then more souls. because at TH Machine Tools, they've got QR codes on all their products. You scan it, it takes you to their website. So I was looking at some slightly bigger bandsaws.
jamie peacock: and then looking up the Rand dollar because I wanted to calculate something I can't remember. I think it was because I wanted to make sure that the target price point on these little inserts made sense.
Curt: Gotcha. Yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah, so just Hours, machining time, material, heat treats, all that stuff. just refining the costing on them to make sure that it is actually profitable to make them. So y 'all.
Curt: Cool, cool.
jamie peacock: And then your your Google box is empty.
Curt: My Google box is full of a bunch of bamboo stuff because I was buying filament and whatnot. ah A bunch of... Printing sites. Oh! um uh my daughter's big into drawing and like painting it always has been but like likes to watch drawing shows um and then like follow along
jamie peacock: Okay. Yeah.
Curt: um so they don't understand um that like we could pause like we could like everything nowadays like if whatever shows you want to watch like you can you can pull it up like whatever you could stop it we can rewind we can do it skip commercials like
jamie peacock: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: um So I was trying to explain to her she was getting frustrated. because She's like I can't draw as well. I'm like You're five. this person is 35 they've been drawing five times longer than you've been alive Um,
jamie peacock: yeah
Curt: so anyways i was like when i was little i watched his show and anyways all i remember was the guy he'd go draw draw draw and uh his name is mark kistler um from the Imagination Station. I don't know if any Canadians are listening to this, but you probably watched that when you were little. um but i saw i pulled up some of the videos for her and it's just hilarious watching like a 90s era video. in this era of like super high fast -paced cuts attention seeking, like one camera angle for like.
Curt: a minute 30 seconds of the guy just like talking head about it and then like switch to another cat and like oh my god it was so peaceful and calming to watch so um i'm kind of just reliving my youth watching some of those drawing videos so yeah
jamie peacock: ah funny as folk
Curt: <unk>s That's basically my entire Instagram.
jamie peacock: us
Curt: and then like a bunch of ordering shit but i'm sorry not instagram jesus uh uh that's my entire google box and the rest is ordering stuff which is
jamie peacock: google boxs no
Curt: Not interesting in the slightest.
jamie peacock: oh
Curt: So. ah
jamie peacock: now it's interesting to see how the ah how content has shifted over time.
Curt: Yeah, and it like... Me and my wife both try to do that. like we We try to push some like older stuff to her. You don't need to be watching like just super... Like. And. brain.
jamie peacock: High -speed braindead stuff.
Curt: Yeah, just like just try to... like Let's watch some 90s cartoons. And she does. She likes like Sailor Moon and some of the old cartoons that we liked. and like which is great but like it's crazy what they crank out nowadays you're like how is this whatever okay i get it it gets you money gets you clicks but like
jamie peacock: but it's very much not
Curt: so I don't know. That's just, this is me.
jamie peacock: Not healthy.
Curt: old man yelling at the clouds so we'll carry on we'll move we'll move away from this
jamie peacock: Yep. Well, we watched we've tried so We've got... Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. plus Danica wanted to watch a movie last night.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: and It's not on any of the services. It's like...
Curt: Yeah. but
jamie peacock: par Let's go.
Curt: Yo ho yo ho.
jamie peacock: Yeah. 100%.
Curt: I was just going to say.
jamie peacock: Fucking... tie into that shit watch the movie i go want to watch it we're going to watch it now that's why we have a pc on TV. Both of us are competent humans, we can run But Tarantula, you tarantula, I'll...
jamie peacock: getting AIDS on our computer.
Curt: No.
jamie peacock: And if you want to watch a movie, we just download and watch it. like ah If it's not there, I'm paying for these services. If it's not there, I'm watching it anyway. Um...
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Like, I mean, this last week. Trying to think. I watched... Maybe two hours of YouTube at home? and a movie last night that's it that's all i've watched this whole week
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Because I'm being busy at work. and I come home at 8 o 'clock at night, I want to go to bed. Not gets pinged.
Curt: Yeah, totally.
jamie peacock: Yeah, it's been a long, late night this week. But yeah, it's... yoho Speaking of, actually, that's something we'll discuss in the after show.
Curt: Hmph.
jamie peacock: Is, uh... the uptake in Uh... software clones.
Curt: Oh, yes. I have some topics for this too. Yeah, perfect.
jamie peacock: Dude, yeah, okay, yeah.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: Because I don't want to have the the whole fucking podcast be vibe coding. Everyone else's is like that. So let's chat about that in the in the after show.
Curt: Yeah.
jamie peacock: I sweet well.
Curt: Yep. That's it then.
jamie peacock: ah Yes, where can people find you and your things?
Curt: Confoundermachine .com. ah All roads point to wherever you need to be. You want to buy some cool shirts from us? There's links that point to us here, there, too. yeah Look at Jamie wearing one. Look at me not.
jamie peacock: Yeah.
Curt: so anyway
jamie peacock: Fancy. That's fun.
Curt: How about you, Master Jamie? Where can people find your wares?
jamie peacock: Oh yeah. jspec and jspeceng .com you can find links to everything the instagram the Norco Workholding loan machinists, it's all there. Um, Yup. Head through there. And then what are you up to tomorrow, Kurt?
Curt: Tim. Tomorrow. I should probably prep my yard for winter because winter is coming. So yeah, I just usually wait. till the snow falls and then i'm running around the yard trying to like find all the shit that the snow is covered so i think i might do that tomorrow because i think the weather will be decent But, yeah.
jamie peacock: yeah it's uh
Curt: Yeah, how about you? What are you up to today?
jamie peacock: I think I'm gonna go into the shop and get the machine running and then come back home and do CAD work, but I'm not entirely sure. Um, Yeah, it's hot as balls. It's like 33 degrees C here. every day.
Curt: Oh.
jamie peacock: It's very unpleasant.
Curt: That's warm.
jamie peacock: Yup. I need to chat to the managing.
Curt: Oh.
jamie peacock: agent people at the workshop they just sent me a lease renewal for a two -year lease i'm like cool i'll sign this when you put a whirly whirly on my roof
Curt: ah Fair fair, yeah.
jamie peacock: I need the hot air out of my workshop. it's fucking unbearable. So... they need to put that in then i'll insulate the roof I kind of want to put an AC in but... And Whirly Whirly will probably do the trick for now.
Curt: Yeah. Yeah.
jamie peacock: That and some blondes on the back windows. But yeah, gonna probably go into the shop and then come back and work. Um, But yeah, thank you everybody for listening.
Curt: Sweet.
