Zach Sheets: Hello and welcome to the Everything ExtraCast podcast week of August 10th, 2026. I'm your host Zach.
Chris Prime: And my co -host Chris.
Zach Sheets: And this week we're jumping into the telepods and talking about 1986's The Fly. which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It came out on August 15, 1986. And I think. like Definitely one of the best... Remakes of all time.
Zach Sheets: And. One of the best horror like body horror movies of all time.
Zach Sheets: from the From the master body whore, David Cronenberg.
Chris Prime: Yeah. It's not like... uh a random horror movie just because of just how shocking it was this was a hey guess what Cronenberg's taking on the fly. Get ready.
Zach Sheets: I put it. its it It reminds me a lot of what happened with like The Thing. Because they're they're both like, you know, remakes of kind of like. Yep, you could say like cheesy 50s. horror movies.
Chris Prime: Yeah, safe to say.
Zach Sheets: And then. And then... They turned them into like these like practical effects. driven like much like more interesting deeper stories
Chris Prime: I think, but like. Just... Like the the cre the thing, the original. There are diehard sci -fi fans who... didn't accept like remakes at this time.
Chris Prime: You know, it it was still like.
Zach Sheets: a
Chris Prime: Not lazy. writing or Hollywood out of ideas. It was just that. The generation that. Was able to like go see the movies and sort of.
Chris Prime: you know voice their opinion they They were like against. Like... remakes in this era. Like very far. A few 80s remakes were good.
Chris Prime: Up until this point.
Zach Sheets: of
Chris Prime: Up until like... I think.
Zach Sheets: Well, the thing was 82, and then this was 86.
Chris Prime: Right. Right. But like eight. The thing was not popular compared to the fly.
Zach Sheets: Well, no, yeah, because the thing thing got buried by E .T. That was the whole thing that happened with the thing.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: I mean, obviously...
Chris Prime: with the fly. But like but the fly is straight up. Hey, we're going to do everything we learned about like. releasing this we're gonna we're gonna like fix all that
Zach Sheets: hopeful Yeah, hopefully there's not another like insect -related movie that's coming out. Like like a failure for the... uh insect movies gonna bury us like the the thing
Chris Prime: you know in the 80s disney took chances on movies so there could have been a weird You know. Like, boy and his bug kind of movie.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: I was a little side tangent. I always confuse like the telepod in the fly with like. The Navigator.
Zach Sheets: Oh, like flight a navigator?
Chris Prime: Ship. Yeah, because it's around that time in the 80s where it's like. You kind of want high sci fi objects and. one of them was a teleporter which looked badass and the other one was a spaceship that look pretty badass for a kid but as you get older you're like wow that is Very.
Zach Sheets: That's early CG.
Chris Prime: Like. early yeah it just does not age well but The the tele the like teleporter here and the fly. Looks amazing. It's like when people reference it in modern media, you can instantly tell that's like the Cronenberg teleporter.
Zach Sheets: okay
Zach Sheets: Well, no. For me, like for the longest time until I actually saw the movie. like The only reference I had to this movie was like the Trace of Horror episode.
Chris Prime: Really?
Zach Sheets: I was like, oh, I know is a thing, but I haven't seen the thing. like i know this is like a like a movie but i i haven't seen what this movie is i just know that like
Chris Prime: A reference. Yeah. So... Uh... I get that. Because... i saw this before i saw the simpsons because i just wasn't Catching up on The Simpsons too much?
Chris Prime: Let alone maybe the. the like halloween episodes because those are the big like you know Usually the third. episode of the season.
Zach Sheets: it's pretty early yeah because they started september so then it's like you know a couple weeks in you're already into like halloween time so
Chris Prime: Yeah, so like I wasn't always good at... catching that and like my fan i was like the only one in my family like into the simpsons like oh I'll try to catch it. But yeah. I saw this because for odd reasons, this was always on TV.
Chris Prime: It's like I saw. I always saw... Mmm. I like the censored version a lot. Then like at a sleepover, we watched, we rented like this.
Chris Prime: And... to see like all of it uncensored is like okay now i get why the appeal Because even if it's censored. It's still pretty good. You still see a lot of like. Grotesque.
Chris Prime: Horror without it being violent, you know Until like the last scene, basically. But... Would you also believe this movie is like...
Chris Prime: Co -produced by Mel Brooks.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, that's one of the crazy things. Like, he, like... Yeah, but it's Brooks Films, but then... He was like, don't don't like don't tell people i'm I'm producing this because then people think it's like a wacky comedy or something.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: or like
Chris Prime: I mean Mel Brooks gets movies. he he gets like story structure so
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: He probably saw this and was like, okay. This is going to be a great. And. Like. For a summer horror movie? This was.
Chris Prime: Like, it did well.
Chris Prime: and uh Yeah, Cronenberg, I think at this point... in his career.
Zach Sheets: hugh He was coming off Dead Zone. That was the movie he did before this.
Chris Prime: The Christopher Walken one?
Zach Sheets: The Christopher Walken dead zone, yeah.
Chris Prime: Which I embarrassed that like I didn't watch it until like a few years ago. i just I've never seen it all the way through.
Zach Sheets: mm -hmm
Chris Prime: I see the TV show. But I haven't seen like the original.
Zach Sheets: And then then after after The Fly, he did Dead Ringers. That was his next movie after The Fly. Which also just got TV show.
Chris Prime: Yeah, yeah Uh...
Zach Sheets: And then Jeff Goldblum was it coming off of like... Transylvania 6 -5000?
Zach Sheets: I feel like...
Chris Prime: Which is like still a weird movie.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I feel like this is like... the like one of the first big like Jeff Goldblum movies
Zach Sheets: Because he was like you know he was like a side character. He was in like... like like Like... I mean, he was the co -star of Transylvania 6500, but, like, no one... Saw that movie. That was like a flop.
Zach Sheets: I feel like this is like they've kind of the first big like... Jeff Goldblum starring in this movie.
Chris Prime: I could see that. Like... I think what Goldblum's first breakout role was in Death Wish.
Zach Sheets: I mean, that that was like literally his first movie ever.
Chris Prime: Yeah. And then he was on TV shows.
Zach Sheets: I mean, yeah yeah, I think he had a bunch of like the... Yo, he's on the Columbo and like... Starsky and Hutch and all these, like... Like all the, like the procedurals.
Chris Prime: either The circuits of what you have to do to get famous.
Zach Sheets: I mean, Buckaroo Banzai, he was just like a side character of Buckaroo Banzai.
Chris Prime: Uh...
Chris Prime: And that movie did not do well.
Zach Sheets: No.
Chris Prime: I've never seen the big show.
Zach Sheets: i don't yeah I don't know if he... I think he was probably like i one of the main people in that. But...
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's one of those ensembles. but
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: It's like what a few people or the breakout stars. Yeah, i don't I didn't see a lot of early... Goldblum movies, but I think, yeah, after this, then it was like, okay.
Chris Prime: We're in. Same thing with, I think, Earth Girls Are Easy.
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm
Chris Prime: To me, that girl that movie was always on like Comedy Central, too.
Chris Prime: And that also had Geena Davis.
Zach Sheets: And then just you know a couple years later, Jurassic Park. That he really blew up.
Chris Prime: way more couple you know like from 88 to 89
Zach Sheets: It's... seven except except yeah eight like 86 to 93 so like galaxy seven years
Zach Sheets: But yeah, after Jesse Parker, then it was like, oh yeah, Jeff Goldblum is like a superstar.
Chris Prime: Oh yeah. Oh, what? That movie, everyone's career, if they were just like... A little bit, it blew up.
Chris Prime: So I thought I kind of want to wait 90 more movies.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: well i mean he got you know he got seinfeld so that was like he was like set for it's never Yeah he was set for that.
Chris Prime: That was steady gigs, but. Yeah. But. Back to the fly. Yeah, like... You'd imagine When people compare.
Chris Prime: The Vincent Price portrayal. of The scientists, and now you have, like... Peak 80s Goldblum.
Zach Sheets: Well, vincent Vincent Price wasn't... the like Vincent Price didn't get turned into a fly. He was like the... Like. It was like David Hedison was the guy who got turned to fly.
Chris Prime: Oh wait, so...
Zach Sheets: In the original?
Chris Prime: Okay, yeah, you're right. Vincent Price was, like, the boyfriend guy who, like, shows up and is like, what's going on in this lab?
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, the 50s fly is, like, it's a guy in, like, a giant, like, fly head and, like, a fly arm and he's, like, like you're running around.
Chris Prime: Yeah, and... The fact that... It's not like the fly is. Uh... merge. It's that version was Oh, the human went here and the fly went there.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, it was like it was like some some body parts got switched. it was like Like a head and an arm got swapped between them.
Chris Prime: But in this version... It was more of we merged the DNA because. Uh... It's the 80s, and we just learned what DNA was.
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: I think in 1980... Three. Re... they map the human genome or something like it's. Not that. Long ago. You know, it it within like our timeline.
Chris Prime: Our, like, life, like... We barely are. Like. the The human DNA mapping is. like a little bit older than us.
Chris Prime: But up to that point, people were just guessing how DNA worked. They're just like... I don't know like
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Like.
Chris Prime: Proteins I guess.
Zach Sheets: Wait.
Chris Prime: RNA?
Zach Sheets: Like, like, like Seth Brundle's computer in this movie is just flashing a bunch of letters. That looks like DNA, right?
Chris Prime: And even then it was like, okay, so how do you combine them? They're just like. Sugar? He just... You shake it.
Zach Sheets: like The computer did it.
Chris Prime: Yeah, that's the MacGuffin is that it's still an 80s computer. I think it's a Mac.
Zach Sheets: Well, I feel like
Chris Prime: With some. Computer.
Zach Sheets: it like so I don't know if like so like Seth invented this, but like he also like kind of invented... Uh, like talking to a computer like like giving it like verbal commands
Chris Prime: Oh, prompting?
Zach Sheets: prompting it and then like it's like in like you know chatting with an ai basically basically fit like chat gpt
Chris Prime: I don't think he invented it because it's taken from other sci -fi things where people are doing computer logs. So. Think like. Aliens.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Wait, they're talking to Mother? So that's not, that's them.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: prompting but they're also having a conversation with and AI. Hal was one of the big ones, you know, talking to Hal. But... Yeah, no, in this...
Chris Prime: Semi. I don't know. like Future tech. Seth Kutcher's made money off his prompting computer. Because it...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: It followed him. It wasn't just like, all right, error, spell check. No, that's not what I said. Like, it never... is realistic. It's like, ever try to tell a smart device to turn off a light? Sometimes you have to repeat yourself like three times.
Chris Prime: He got it. He somehow invented like a better. detection software.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, he's got, like, an insanely advanced computer for, like, 1980... If it's 1986, the present, when it's happening. Because it's got voice recognition. It's got, like, you can... kind of prompt the the computer like learn things because like he trains it to learn about like any organic matter or like organic matter like it's like this is what Uh...
Zach Sheets: Like, fleshes. Like. Figure out how to like. Rebuild it. And it also has like a crazy like... like visual some sort of like like recognition thing where it's like it can like it has like a scandal like everything happened inside like the pods
Chris Prime: Yeah, like a...
Zach Sheets: And like thermal imaging. and
Chris Prime: That should have been... his product. Forget? Forget the transport order. Forget the the like, oh, we got to keep it a secret or whatever. Just sell the tech.
Zach Sheets: and
Chris Prime: But it doesn't seem like... uh that staff seth had a partner right it just himself he was just self -funding this
Zach Sheets: Well, he it's like he works for a company called Bartok. That. Eventually. He has, like, he's he has to, like... give them the teleportation technology. Like he's filming for them.
Zach Sheets: But he's also like he says he's he's getting stuff from other like he's basically telling one person like build me this laser. and not telling them what it's for and then it's like then he's telling another guy like build me this like pod or but but this part of it And then he gets all the piece he's got all the pieces together and he put it together himself. so he He's got like, he's like. Getting all the components like separately and then putting them together like is like a... The full. Teleportation.
Zach Sheets: thing.
Zach Sheets: i think I think they mentioned too that he like worked for... other like he's on he's on all these other like government projects and stuff because like when Uh, stathis. Like, John Goetz is, like, looking into, like, his background. He's like, oh, yeah, he was on this team, but he, he like, left or he got fired. or like
Chris Prime: Well he's eccentric, so he probably demanded things.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: like I got to work on this teleportation thing, so I got to do it in secret by myself.
Zach Sheets: because like Because I get motion sickness. That's my driving factor. it's like I want to just like go somewhere without having to like drive in a car or fly in a plane.
Zach Sheets: Because the teleportation is going to be like a... like a like, a transportation method. Like, you just put him everywhere and he's, like, teleport to, like, from New York to, like... England or New York to China or wherever you're going.
Chris Prime: I get it. It's like they want it. to build Something super, like... futuristic but just Don't send organic matter. first I have no idea why.
Chris Prime: they They were trying to do like. Living tissue. I get it's like. Big money if you get it right. But there's 9 ,000 ways you can go wrong.
Zach Sheets: Well, the interesting, like... it's just even as we start like he's already like like he's already pretty much he's at the the end like the end steps like he's he's figured out how to do like inorganic matter like you transfer any like Anything not organic, fine.
Zach Sheets: And then it's just like the one last step. Like I have to figure out how to get like do organic matter. And if I figure that out, then it's done. And I can like. Yo. reveal it and we can change the world.
Chris Prime: i don't know why they didn't just do like okay in stages like stagger it's like okay the You know. We have... a We have the teleporter that can send like boxes.
Chris Prime: But it's like, all right, what about like send this dog in the box? You're like, oh, we can't do that.
Zach Sheets: I feel like... you like Being able to send yeah like you like like packages and stuff, that would... like be a pretty major Yo.
Chris Prime: Advancement.
Zach Sheets: advancement Like, you know, and then, like, get that out there, and then... figure out and get like just keep working on organic stuff. yeah like
Chris Prime: I mean, yeah, because it seems like he's pressure to keep doing this so fast.
Zach Sheets: Because, yeah.
Chris Prime: and then The only reason why everything goes wrong is once the fly enters that and he looks at his DNA and he's like, well. It's great, but I need to understand this more.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: Like he's not like instantly like a crazy person. His first project is like. The fly in me. Let's go. like we I want to become a fly man.
Zach Sheets: Well, he well he goes he goes through the first time because he's, like, drunk and, like, thinking that Geo Davis, like, went back to Stathis.
Chris Prime: Did Steph ever date Gina Davis?
Zach Sheets: Good. they were so that yeah They were a couple. Well, like... He was like her like college professor. And then got her into like the magazine she works for.
Chris Prime: Okay.
Zach Sheets: But then they also dated, and like he has like a key to her apartment they keep still. which is like like For the whole like first two -thirds of this movie, Stathis is just like a raging douchebag.
Chris Prime: Oh yeah.
Zach Sheets: It's a creep. like just like She's like, give me my key back. He's like. No, I don't think I will. I'm going to break into your apartment and take a shower. and And then when you're not here.
Chris Prime: Yeah, he's straight up like the bad guy for a while. in this movie.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Because Seth is turning into a like a monster, but like he's not the villain. Seth is basically the villain for most of it.
Chris Prime: Yeah. If Seth just didn't. Do. His last plan. You have been fine. you would have been very innocent. In fact, I think in the original.
Chris Prime: The fly is just mad. It's not trying to like. Force. His... wife or girlfriend into a teleporter.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: I think they're just like, alright, like... Giant fly person. Like... You're getting kind of annoying now.
Zach Sheets: Well, in the original, he like the 58 version. They think if they can get the fly, they can find the fly that got... Was in like the teleportation pods with the scientists. Like...
Zach Sheets: Andre? Then they can they can put it put them back put them back in the pods and then redo it, and then they'll like put everything back the way it was.
Chris Prime: Hmm?
Zach Sheets: But then that you find it's like, oh, no, it's like. the the human fly The fly with the human head gets eaten by a spider, so it's like we can't... And then like the the fly human.
Zach Sheets: goes into rage and like burns down to the laboratory it's like well We can't do that anymore. Everyone just forget this happens.
Chris Prime: Also in the original one, they're all French Canadian.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I think they're they're all like French, but then they all have like British accents.
Chris Prime: At least in this one, I think they're just in LA.
Zach Sheets: I think so, yeah
Chris Prime: They're just like 80s. LA. Just enjoying. But like... the peak 80s like high before the economy like crashes.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, like like so like Seth bought an entire like warehouse as his lab.
Chris Prime: That probably costs like... $200 ,000 a month to like... Rent.
Zach Sheets: Okay, cheers.
Chris Prime: But yeah. That's the thing about... this version is that they really Try to do a... like a creature feature movie. What?
Chris Prime: The creator and the creature are the same person. Where sometimes it's... it's Just like we we made a monster and let's keep it a secret. But it's like... hard when The creator is also the monster and he's just sort of like, okay, hey.
Chris Prime: I'm going to document my metamorphosis. And I'm. I think at some point he doesn't even care to like change back. He's just sort of like, cool. Right. Like. Isn't this great? Check out all the science. Achievements they're gonna give me.
Zach Sheets: Well, that's that's kind of like the... The thing that really jumped out at me this time while you were watching it is that... Like. slightly like slightly different surface that like it starts out as like a superhero movie basically he like You know, he gets like...
Zach Sheets: He goes to the telepod. It comes out feeling awesome. like he he Like, he's able to do, like, these, like, insane gymnastics. Like, he just like that like the crazy, like... like Gets out of bed and just starts doing like these, like, uh... gymnastics on his chair in the and the around around his house and they do like Full, like... you know, handstand pushups and...
Zach Sheets: like flipping over things and he's like wow this is awesome And he he thinks he thinks initially that the... Pods. When he when it, like, re, like, mature -lized him.
Zach Sheets: Kind of like purified his DNA. He's like, oh, any sort of, like, flaws that got, like, that were, like, in my... original dna got taken out when it re So now that's that that's like an extra like bonus of this.
Zach Sheets: teleportation uh system is that if you go through you become like better than you were before
Chris Prime: I get that. I get, like, that's what he thought initially. And it's reasonable. because you know, what's the downside? Everything is great. He's got the girl. He's got the. Abad.
Chris Prime: This project is like on the underway. He's almost done.
Zach Sheets: yeah he he has all he gets all these like superpowers basically it's like enhanced strength he gets like Yeah, always like, like... gymnastic abilities like yes like apparently like and unstoppable, like, sexual...
Zach Sheets: prowess because like it's like right after like they go to the pod like they have this like like marathon like like lovemaking session and then just like we've been doing this for hours says stop He's like, no, we got keep going.
Chris Prime: I don't get how... I get he has the endurance. Gideon Davis doesn't.
Zach Sheets: they That's why she's just like, we gotta stop. And he's just like, what?
Chris Prime: and This is starting to hurt now.
Zach Sheets: No.
Chris Prime: like Everything is just...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Is that? Is that the like...
Zach Sheets: that's why That's when he like lead's like he's like, I want to find someone who's going to keep up with me. I'm going to go to the bar.
Chris Prime: Yeah, he's gonna prowl. But... Is that Cronenberg's Comet? On, like... Sax, he's like, listen. Women have the endurance, but now men got the better endurance.
Zach Sheets: Or like, I don't, are flies like known for like, they're like. You know, like. sexual like like endurance and like performance i guess i guess because they like don't live that long so that's like one of their only main functions is like baiting and Like and they die.
Chris Prime: Meeting.
Chris Prime: Maybe.
Zach Sheets: Basically.
Chris Prime: Flies live like... 20 days, I think.
Zach Sheets: Because it's like you know the fly. brain is like it's like brain like it's like taking over his his mind basically So he's like. getting all the instincts and... feelings of like an insect.
Chris Prime: But like it kind of changes because. His Some of his, like... instincts aren't Like. plot killer fly thing so it's like there's no such thing as a killer fly
Zach Sheets: m
Chris Prime: So... He sort of becomes like... More of a like snake. Because he gets, like, territorial. He then gets protective.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Yeah, super aggressive. a Yeah, and like super like he's like. And then his his big thing is like the middle part of the movie. is that he He wants to like force someone into the pods. but like So like you can have like someone that's like is equal.
Zach Sheets: so he like he goes to the bar and finds like Like, the woman who hangs out there. And then... we The infamous, like... arm wrestling scene.
Zach Sheets: Which is... you of Of all like the special effects and all the like the goopy, like disgusting effects, like that that arm -breaking and that... arm wrestling scene is still like one of the most like visceral Like effects.
Zach Sheets: Where they like the guy's arm just snaps.
Chris Prime: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: Because it's like...
Chris Prime: Yeah, you get the compound fracture where it breaks in multiple places.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Because like... Yo, no one's... uh probably ever gonna turn into like a giant fly monster but like you you you kind of like would know how like the pain of like if your arm got snapped that way so that's like just like oh man that that would hurt
Chris Prime: lean After that, he's like, all right. Tawny, the bar girl, like, let's go back to my warehouse.
Zach Sheets: Okay. mm -hmm
Chris Prime: And.
Chris Prime: it's like
Chris Prime: I guess like. in the 80s to impress a girl like that you just had to break someone's arm and you're like Right?
Zach Sheets: Well, that was like that was like the other agreement. It was like, oh, I win. i get I get the girl. She's like, wait, what? Click. It was like, shut up.
Chris Prime: I mean, it's the 80s. Winning women was just a thing.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: but But then like, he tries to like... Throw Tawny in the pod. She has the same reaction as, like, Geena Davis is like, I don't want to go in there. It's like, come on, do it. You'll feel awesome.
Chris Prime: It's so cool Don't you want to have, like... health problems like me.
Zach Sheets: Don't you want to start oozing like weird goo out of your hands?
Zach Sheets: Because that's like like, it's like... At that point, like, his face is kind of, like... It looks like he has a bad case of, like, acne. Like, he's a he's, like, getting, like, a lot of, like... it's like oily skin and then he's arm wrestling the guy like like the weird like goo starts like seeping out
Chris Prime: Boils.
Zach Sheets: I...
Chris Prime: Which I think in an arm wrestling match, that's kind of like a, hey, maybe I shouldn't be touching you.
Zach Sheets: But it's not it's not like the corrosive stuff yet because he's not like he's like vomiting out acid yet. But.
Chris Prime: Yeah. But it's still like. And anyone that's like. Touch that one with, like, skin conditions. Arm wrestling is... Very, like... intimate, so... You should not be touching them.
Zach Sheets: But it's kind of like right after that, like right right after you like. You know, that whole part. let me like he starts really like It's like his fingernails start falling off he and he starts realizing, oh, something bad's happening.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I think that. That to me is more realistic of watching. fingernails fall off and it's... Like. you know still gives me shivers because that's like i have fingernails you know like that's
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: you You look at your fingernails a lot subconsciously. So... Having seen that scene come off, you're like, ooh. Oh boy.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, a lot a lot of like the smaller, more subtle... like effects are the most effective ones. They give you like the like the shiver. Like the the the arm breaking or the fingernails coming off.
Zach Sheets: Because, like, you know the you know giant you know, giant fly monsters are awesome, but, it's like... that's just It's just kind of this like fantastical thing.
Zach Sheets: But you could get some sort of like weird. Uh... Oh. Well, I think that's like a Cronenberg thing, too, is, like, you know, like, diseases and, like, your body, like, betraying you.
Zach Sheets: It's like like a throwing scene for most of his movies.
Chris Prime: Yeah. it's It's also like the... what what it's like the twilight zone rule of like haha you're trying to mess with science like Oh, you thought I can get away with this without, like, some sort of karmat karma Karma.
Chris Prime: Chromatic. Uh... Like Retribution.
Zach Sheets: And you tried rushing it too. You should have like waited. until you got all the information.
Chris Prime: You know... the I'm surprised like his boss wasn't someone. that. Kind of like. stumbles into his lab or something and then it's just like well if you don't do this i'll fire you
Zach Sheets: I mean, if they wanted to make like Seth like not. as sympathetic they yeah there could have been a like a scene where it's like i'm pulling the funding on you brundle like you're not this is like way out of control and then they like like Shows him into the pod or something and does something to him.
Chris Prime: Yeah, until he's like, oh, are you're gonna... It's almost that scene from Batman Forever where Nygma just kills the. Like... Wayne boss because he's like. Going to fire him.
Chris Prime: So then... He does the brainwash. This is a... This would have been more poignant to show if c Seth was like truly evil. But if anything, he just...
Chris Prime: Yeah. he yeah He kind of fights like the weird sex pest character, which is just. Keenan Davis is...
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: Boyfriend? Our ex -boyfriend?
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: we We agree. like He's not a great guy.
Zach Sheets: But the weird thing is like he steps up at the end. like i like
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's the character redemption out of nowhere.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. He's like, oh, I'm gonna decide to be a good guy now.
Chris Prime: But I mean... If Jesus Dave is... Option was. The Fly Man. Or...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: the dude who breaks into her apartment.
Chris Prime: But at least the dude who wants to break her apartment doesn't want to take her DNA. You know, that's that's sort of like the difference.
Zach Sheets: Hmm.
Chris Prime: Yeah, they're missing like a middle scene where. Seth is doing like inhuman experiments.
Zach Sheets: they kind of yeah They kind of do a time jump. Cause like. Seth set kind of figure he figures out what like something's been going on with him. He if he figures he finds out the fly was like a fly was in the pod with him.
Chris Prime: Which is, like, but the fot but do the flies escape?
Zach Sheets: He's like, oh, oh no.
Zach Sheets: I think if I well It... the machine the computer fused them together like they're fused like their dna together so fly kind of like it i don't it was It wasn't absorbed. with him it's just basically like they're DNA is like one being now.
Chris Prime: One. See that? Okay. that's where The... The... The difference from the original was that like. You swap. things, like a teleporter accident.
Chris Prime: Which, I think. I think a lot of like fan media. Always joked about. Star Trek having transporter problems?
Zach Sheets: Mhm.
Chris Prime: And it makes sense. It's like you're recon you're recombining DNA. It's not just like a, okay, move this over there. It's like.
Zach Sheets: what's It's like the classic... like like kind of question about teleporting technology is like if Because you're getting you're you're getting like broken down and rebuilt. like but if It's like, are you the same person that like entered the pod but that comes out? or it's like is are you like Is the original you destroyed and you're like a clone basically?
Chris Prime: You know, it's funny. American Dad. Answer that.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: It answered it really well. Where it's like, oh, in order to like scan your DNA, it has to like consume you. So... You're... conscious while that's happening. It's like. Bloody.
Chris Prime: And then they rebuild you later. And then it's like, yep. other people have envisioned that no like when it scans you it kills one version of you so two people can't exist and then another person transfers you over.
Chris Prime: but it still wouldn't do like consciousness. That's the hard part to transport. Because I get, like, it rebuilds your DNA, but...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: So there's like an exact. Replicaview aged up? But then it's like. Would your mind be the same if it didn't have all those experiences? Is DNA in our experience?
Chris Prime: Does my fingernails have the same memory? So that's where it gets kind of like wonky. but
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Rebuilding DNA with a teleporter that just... Moves matter. I guess, like, you just become atomized? I think that's like. Reasonable.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I i remember... Like timeline. Maybe not so much the movie, but the book by Michael Crichton. That was like a big, like, because that was like a big, like, there was teleportation and time travel. But there's a whole thing where like...
Zach Sheets: if someone teleports too much then it starts like causing like anomalies in your body like they're like blood vessels don't line up properly and stuff like that so It was like... like
Chris Prime: I only read, I only seen the movie, so I don't think they mentioned that. in the in there where it's like, yeah. Like you can only do this so much before your body breaks down just because. It's not meant to endure this.
Chris Prime: Yeah. I like the Terminator rule. Where the machine just sort of figures out time through. Weird. Time magic. And...
Chris Prime: You can only have organic matter for some reason.
Zach Sheets: It is.
Chris Prime: It's like the opposite of.
Zach Sheets: It's the opposite of such a problem, yeah.
Chris Prime: Yeah. It's like, okay, so you invented an organic time traveler thing? Cool. but You can't send weapons or bombs. You have to send it through people. Yeah, it is definitely the...
Chris Prime: Post? No, no. Terminator 2 was like 91, so they pretty much saw this and went, okay.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Post the first one, yeah.
Chris Prime: Because I think...
Zach Sheets: Definitely. very Very similar, like Jeff Goldblum, like... you know enters the pod comes out of the pod very similar to like a terminator like he has to be naked he comes out he's in like the smoke
Chris Prime: Yep. Does he enter in with clothes or he enters in naked?
Zach Sheets: He enters it naked because I think it's just he wants to make sure it's like... just like organic material or something.
Chris Prime: It makes sense. I mean... We don't know if you wore a shirt what would happen. Does he become part shirt? like
Zach Sheets: his skin would turn to like his skin would be like fused with the shirt
Chris Prime: I mean, not to spoil what happens later, but it's like, yeah, it's the movie's rule against Bendy, where it's like, I don't know, if you're holding a candy bar, you... can somehow absorb the candy bar or the candy bar enters you it's just
Zach Sheets: that' would be a major That would be a weird... Like. Quirk or something? if you know if it sounds you work like fine but then you have to be naked to travel it's like
Chris Prime: Oh, no, you want to add one more layer of difficulty? Check this out. what Does it count if you ate something?
Zach Sheets: like if yeah It's like if it's still like... pretty much like salad in your stomach or something.
Chris Prime: Yeah. Like. I get in the Terminator. rule. it's you know It's organic, so I get it if you ate something organic, which... good you know you're supposed to Uh,
Chris Prime: But if you like... had Let's say a steak, a slightly undercooked steak. And you went in the pod. Do become part stake.
Zach Sheets: It's not your face, it's just like steak meat.
Chris Prime: Or it's like, you know, there's way more like cow protein in your blood now. So now it's like the machine goes, OK, you're part cow.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: And you're like, oh.
Chris Prime: Just a question, because a fly... Was in the same pod. And he threw up. Acid. So...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: So what's it when you have like you eat a steak? And now you have six stomachs on the other end.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, I guess yeah how much DNA is in a steak that's left over from a cow that the computer would have to like figure out.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I mean there's nothing even weirder. What if someone sneezed on you? And then you got on the pod. Do you get their DNA in you?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, Seth definitely had a lot more stuff to figure out.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: if if it feel like Even if if nothing went wrong and he teleported fine.
Chris Prime: If...
Zach Sheets: Yeah, still still a lot of, like... theoretical things is to work out.
Chris Prime: There should have been a point where it's like a decontamination stage.
Zach Sheets: Yes.
Chris Prime: i don't I don't know what it would have been. It would have been, I don't know, just like douse yourself in. but One, you can't eat anything. It's like surgery. It's like the night before surgery. Don't eat anything. That's that's kind of like the rule.
Zach Sheets: He definitely should there should have been like a the pods should have been in like a clean environment. like he just hasn't like yeah has He just has out in like his...
Chris Prime: Sterile.
Zach Sheets: you know Draft to eat. warehouse.
Chris Prime: And it's not like he he... Didn't have the room to spare. You know, he had a. Big loft apartment warehouse. that you could have
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: easily built a contamination chamber. Eeyore. Do it not at your home. I just...
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: you You have a pharmaceutical company that you're working for. They will house this chamber. I don't know why. He was trying to save space.
Chris Prime: And I...
Zach Sheets: I mean, i
Chris Prime: Yep.
Zach Sheets: just just just to keep it secret i guess because you want to keep it secret like you didn't want to be And like, like he didn't want... Bartok or whatever, like seeing what he was doing.
Chris Prime: Okay. I guess that's the thing. We don't know how like... manipulative they are yet because that's something they play up in the other movies so those questions which I believe that David Cronenberg only did this one. He didn't do any of the sequels.
Zach Sheets: No, yeah, the sequel to this one was directed by Chris Wallace who did the special effects for this movie. It won an Oscar for this movie. for That shall fix makeup. Yeah, which well -deserved Oscar for that.
Chris Prime: I mean, the second movie, I only seen like... a few hand handful times. It's okay.
Zach Sheets: yeah John Guts is the only person that comes back. like He comes back as Stathis.
Chris Prime: And he's just like pissed. He's like, well. Fly, people. Right.
Zach Sheets: yes
Zach Sheets: Gotta fight his fly kids out there.
Zach Sheets: Which, that scene is also crazy. Like, the, uh, like, Gene Davis' nightmare about giving birth to, like, a maggot baby.
Chris Prime: And it's like not. Uh... Just like. It's depicted so like. detailed You know, it's not just like, oh, it's some joke sequence. It's just like, oh, God, Cronenberg really wanted to.
Chris Prime: show what happens when you mess with like The birthing cycle.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, because like it's it's like it makes sense of like... uh What would happen if like you... know but if Well, if it happened before, it's fine. But like if if if she got pregnant after, he was like...
Zach Sheets: you know, a fly, hit a fly DNA. Then it's like, yeah, what what happened to that kid?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, just like... if Even if it came out like normal, it may be able to like transform like start transforming into like... You're a fly monster.
Chris Prime: Well, okay. So they also like address. Sort of. the Fly 2 premise with it. If you really. If you see that this was like intentional that they're trying to do like a two movie deal.
Chris Prime: Fly 2 isn't so bad. But.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: Yeah, if you... all these questions of supplies and they're just like safety procedures it everything falls apart. Because like. Uh... As a standalone movie.
Chris Prime: It's just like. it's It's supposed to be eccentric science. you know, like no one's thinking of long -term they're just like let's just prove it this could happen Like. Don't even care. like
Chris Prime: don't even care if like You know. The woman you met that night doesn't want to be a fly person.
Zach Sheets: Mm -hmm.
Chris Prime: Just make her.
Zach Sheets: Well, yeah, Seth didn't realize he was a fly person yet. He just he thought he was like a... a teleportation like Like. Superhuman.
Zach Sheets: And it's interesting, like his transform like, his transformation, like, he goes to, like, a stage where, like, he he's basically, like, he has to, like, use, like, crutches, and he's, like, it's, like... super like like uh Like, decomposing, you're like...
Chris Prime: Mm -hmm.
Zach Sheets: And then... Because he's like, well, I'm i'm dying. like I'm i'm i i' dead. And then it's like... I gotta go. A couple of scenes later, he's like... Oh, hey, by the way, I'm i'm i'm cool. I'm way im way better now. I climb on the ceiling like Spider -Man.
Chris Prime: Yeah, he heals so quickly, and it's just like, okay, so when are you going to call the hospital or somebody about this? You're just going to keep the secret?
Zach Sheets: he got through like whatever he had to get through like whatever like the the worst part of what his body was trying to transform him into and then he's like i'm i'm through the other side now now i'm like I'm going to fly completely now.
Zach Sheets: But which that's the part where like he's like, hey. like ryan like like film this show show me eating and he like vomits on his food It's like, it's like I can't eat solid foods anymore. I have to, like, vomit on it. Isn't that cool?
Chris Prime: This is going to be a healthy relationship. I think they've only been dating for like a month. Yeah.
Zach Sheets: And then, then then like... She like stopped seeing him because he like. what you know He went, like... you got like Wait, crazy and like... But they went over the bar and like. Uh, Told her to get out because he was like... wrote Like...
Zach Sheets: Ruining his vibe.
Chris Prime: Yeah, ruining his mad science.
Zach Sheets: I think it's like a joke, like... like It's like four weeks, and then like he he calls her. like but after after like his fingers start falling off like it's like it's like four weeks later he calls her he's like hey Uh...
Zach Sheets: Can you come over and see what's going on with me? And he's like. It's like, oh, hey, yeah, I'm umm i'm a fly person now.
Zach Sheets: Well, I think he thinks he has like some sort of... like like contagious disease as a 1x2 where he's like, don't don't don't get near me, don't touch me. I don't know if it's contagious or not.
Chris Prime: It makes sense where it's like, I don't know what's going on. so You don't want – it's like he's the – He's the patient zero of this.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: But yeah, once he gets through the worst part of it, then he's like... he said it's like on board with like like it's like Hello? I want to see what happens. It's cool. like Every day it's a different champions. I'm collecting all my body parts in like a... My, uh...
Zach Sheets: Sink mirror. They fall off.
Zach Sheets: It's like all his teeth fall out. It's like his ear falls off. Like there's other like. button. unknown body parts that are like in jars is in his medicine cabinet
Chris Prime: He's slowly becoming the like zombie Michael Jackson from Thriller.
Zach Sheets: mm -hmm
Chris Prime: Did thriller come out yet?
Zach Sheets: I think that was like. Edith. Four, maybe?
Chris Prime: Because he's got the same like sunken in big eye look.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. That would be funny if Chris Wallace worked on Thriller. He did work on Thriller, but that would be funny. I'm going to do the Michael Jackson look on this.
Chris Prime: And it's like, oh, look how hard it took to... perfect that i'm just gonna reuse that like technique over and over again.
Zach Sheets: But then, but then, yeah, G. Davis like decides like. to get an abortion for real like she had that like she had the dream and but that that was like kind of like the Which I think that was like an abortion turning into like, oh, you have to like push out like whatever's left in there. It's it's the maggot baby.
Zach Sheets: But then, like, she decides to do it for real, but and, like, Statham's like, All right, I'll take you. this is This is like what Stathis kind of is like. All right, i'm i'm but I'm a good guy. I'm a good knight now. like I'll help you in the middle of the night to get this portion, and, like, I'll...
Zach Sheets: I'll like fight this Flightmaster for you.
Chris Prime: Yeah. He steps up. in a weird way that. a Like he should have had like evil intentions also. like he shouldn't have believed in the fly monster he should have been like oh yeah okay and then like drug her
Zach Sheets: Well, he he watches the video of like Seth like vomiting on his food to eat it. He's like, oh, I believe you now. This is this is not good.
Zach Sheets: And yeah, you definitely shouldn't have like a possible fly baby.
Chris Prime: Yeah, I could see him go like, have my baby. You know, I could see that kind of creepy guy just like... the next day hit on her and be like anyway so remember when i saved you from your Ex -boyfriend?
Zach Sheets: well like At one point early in the movie, he's like... Like, they're in his office. as He's just like, hey. Should we just have, like, casual sex every once in a while?
Chris Prime: Is that cool? Like what?
Zach Sheets: Is that cool? Yeah. It's like... No.
Chris Prime: yeah he He kind of makes it seem like he's a teenager. And. It's like he's a grown man.
Zach Sheets: I think he's supposed he's supposed to be older than Geena Davis. and Because he's like, he was her professor.
Chris Prime: But... It just makes it seem like... he's four years older and not like a like a older person
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Gene Davies is supposed to be like... 23? You know, like... 20. Maybe, maybe like. 27.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: But it's weird.
Chris Prime: It's not that distracting, you know, it it definitely doesn't take away because when I first saw this movie as a kid, I just like these were adults, you know.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: But do you want to get into the the like standoff at the end where it's just like... Now it's like a full on horror movie where it's like fighting a Frankenstein that moves fast.
Zach Sheets: Well... I do appreciate they they do the classic monster thing where the monster. finds like, you know, the main uh the the the main character the main female character like kidnaps her basically and like takes her back to like the castle, which is, like, so he, like, see but he, like, busted It busts into the abortion clinic and like grabs Gia Davis and like brings her back to the the warehouse.
Chris Prime: Before that. Oh. Can you imagine if that abortion clinic was filled with like... other people and they were just like what the hell
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: and And then, you know... uh There was like a like he's got like a message is like no like
Chris Prime: Jesus said this was bad. Like what?
Zach Sheets: It turns like what that Masters of Horror episode.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: Pro -life.
Chris Prime: just Just sort of like, a okay, this is... An odd choice.
Chris Prime: Like you get it? But.
Zach Sheets: yes
Chris Prime: Is it needed?
Zach Sheets: Yeah, brings bring brings brings her back to the warehouse and then... Like we said, like, Stathis, like, steps up. Like, he shows up actually before they get there. And like he's got a shotgun. He's like ready to be like, all right, i'mnna I'm going to kill. so i'm gonna kill Seth, like this this fly monster. And rescue Roddy.
Zach Sheets: But then... Seth bursts in and he's like, he like unleashes his acid like vomit. And, like, melts, stabs his hand and and, like, ankle.
Chris Prime: Who? you know at this point yeah he wasn't a great guy but He didn't need to be melted. And digest it, I guess. like Because Seth could have just came back and i slurped him up.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, dont is he, like... Was that going to be like a meal later? Like, I'm going to... Yeah, I'm going to have his hand and his his foot later. that'll be a Tasty treat.
Chris Prime: Maybe. i bet flies do that to like organic tissue they don't care they do that to poop
Zach Sheets: Well, i think I think he probably would have, like... like dissolved his entire body if like ronnie had yelled him not to do it
Chris Prime: Yeah. yeah I can see that.
Zach Sheets: and then yeah then he reveals his plan of like Uh... he he doesn't he doesn't think like it's not possible for them for him to turn back into a human But. If if he...
Zach Sheets: and Ronnie and the Unborn Baby merge. Then he thinks that there'll be like a. Like. Kind of like a... non -fly, kind of like me undo the fly stuff and there'll be like a one human again.
Zach Sheets: It's like one being.
Chris Prime: Because, you know, his mad science was accurate. All the time.
Chris Prime: I don't know. I get the logic as a crazy person. but i Don't understand why he wants to put her at risk and their baby. He's like, oh, no, her DNA is going to fix. two different DNA.
Chris Prime: It's like...
Zach Sheets: What?
Chris Prime: I don't know if you need another person to swap. DNA with, you know? like If he's putting... three people, then he needs... Three other people to like.
Chris Prime: Yeah. References. Or swapping.
Zach Sheets: Well, you He runs something, he runs like a simulation or something on his own his computer earlier. That's like.
Zach Sheets: It's like a... how do How do I, like... Like. How do I unlike? the contaminant DNA you're like what can I do to like try to fix this and then it's like the solution is Take.
Zach Sheets: one un... Uh, You're un... contaminated DNA. Combine it with the content of the day, transport to like a third pod, which is like his prototype pod that he built, the first one.
Zach Sheets: And then. The result will be, hopefully... A, like none. Not contaminated, but fused together. Two people.
Chris Prime: Yeah, that's like a chat. GPT like result. you know It's going to be like a shitload of mistakes. And then it doesn't have any idea of like long -term consequence. They're just like, yeah, that sounds good. Go do it.
Zach Sheets: like they're like What happens, like, are their minds going to be fused together? is if they're gonna have like It would be like... both people's minds in the same thing or like one is dominant but it has like the memories of like the other person or like
Chris Prime: See those are great questions. Where I... it's like do you become one master creature and now it's like the souls are living in one person?
Chris Prime: Or do their brains fuse?
Zach Sheets: But also...
Chris Prime: because I mean, he's got like instincts as a fly. So it's not like he has the memory of a fly.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: though that'd be an interesting version where like he goes i gotta go to this pile of poop There's some good poop in there.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: I remember that from like a year ago.
Chris Prime: My instincts tell me to eat this.
Chris Prime: I don't know.
Zach Sheets: But... but
Chris Prime: There's not a fly. Tix. He has fly powers, but there should have been a... a thing where he gets like attracted to like a light And he won't like leave the room.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: Like he has he has like the weird hairs growing out of his body like he has like you know he's like slowly turning into like his you know, his skin is... the decomposing.
Chris Prime: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: He's got the acid bomb, but yeah, he doesn't have like a lot of other like fly... I think at one point he mentions that like flos like insects are... They have no emotion. they have It's all instinct and aggressiveness. violence.
Zach Sheets: which And then he's like. That's one thing he tells Macquarie, like, don't come back here ever again or I'll probably hurt you. off the up i hurt you
Chris Prime: I have to melt you?
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: But then at this point, when he's like trying to implement his plan, like he's actually... Uh... He's basically just wearing, like, a skin suit. Because, like, Ryu's, like, like i fight trying to fight him off before - when he's like trying to shove it in the pod and like knocks his jaw off and then that's when he turns into like the full Like, Brundlefly.
Zach Sheets: Like the full like creature. Like all the skin just falls off and it's just like this giant... Like. Insane special effects. creature.
Chris Prime: Which is great, because... horrified of me as a kid.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: I definitely remember just... being thankful now that like it's all shot in a shadowy dark And it's like. Wet.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: but yeah it didn't give me like nightmares but it's definitely like you don't really forget the look of a... mutated human like that.
Chris Prime: Because the nearest thing I remember seeing that has that kind of like. puppetry and and grossness was maybe the... like movie freaks.
Chris Prime: You ever see that movie?
Zach Sheets: i seen I've seen clips of it. I haven't seen the whole thing.
Chris Prime: I came out later, but just like... It still has that like. Shine. to like the creature work. You know?
Zach Sheets: But yeah, like, so but the butterfly, like, yeah, it shoves Ronnie into the first pod. he and he He gets in the second like the second pod, and then... You know, Stathis comes back, like, after he like he passed out because his hand melted off, his foot melted off. But then he's able to, like, shoot the...
Zach Sheets: connection between the first and second pods which like, uh, You know, it stops the... Teleportation sequence.
Chris Prime: What's the absolute between?
Zach Sheets: But. At least for the first pod.
Chris Prime: Those, yeah, first pod.
Zach Sheets: And then the Brundlefly. uh there's like a malfunction and it like merges with the telepods. So that was like, it's Seth. In the fly. And also like.
Zach Sheets: pieces of metal and wiring and cabling.
Chris Prime: It is a little weird that... The pot itself can be DNA -improved because that's not organic. so i kind of yeah It breaks the rule of...
Chris Prime: what is considered organic.
Zach Sheets: Well, I mean, can it can do but it can do the pods can do both, obviously. like the is His first experiment that he shows Ronnie is like, I'm going to teleport your stocking between the the the pods.
Chris Prime: Right, right, but...
Zach Sheets: Which which he would which which and seth mastered he mastered. inorganic material. so i think like So it's like... He was just like stepped on organic.
Chris Prime: but but But here's the thing. It's like, he did he not do... Mix. Was that the first mix?
Zach Sheets: Right. Probably, yeah.
Chris Prime: Transportation.
Zach Sheets: cause because yeah cause Cause he goes in. Like we said, naked. it's like There's no... Nothing like inorganic on him when he teleports.
Chris Prime: But you see, that's that's where like he should have test. that specific condition where it's like what if i hold this rock And then.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, what if I wear a watch? like
Chris Prime: Yeah. And that's where I'm like, okay, so he's did it naked. and then it's like What if you put like a piece of meat and something inorganic together?
Zach Sheets: Or like, you know, not doing it yourself. Do like the baboon. that you have.
Chris Prime: Yeah, does a baboon ever like mutate?
Zach Sheets: So he has, like, two he has two in the movie. Like, the first one gets turned inside out. Like, he shows Ronnie, like, this is what happens when I do like try to do, like. organic material it's just like a inside out baboon inside the pod And then...
Zach Sheets: The second one. is the one that after he teaches the computer how to Translate. Okay, material. that Then the second bad moon teleport's fine.
Zach Sheets: It's like it was like. So that gives him like the. confidence like, oh, now it works. I'm going to get drunk and put myself through.
Chris Prime: Yeah, he should have done more tests than that baboon. that's like Why you have a test baboon.
Zach Sheets: Well, that was like... They were selling it to get tested. But it was going to take a couple weeks, and then... There's the whole thing with, like... Ryan disappeared in the middle of the night and then like... Uh, like.
Zach Sheets: Stathis sends like a a magazine cover that he's like, I'm going to run a story and like reveal everything but that you're doing. Because you're with my girl.
Zach Sheets: then like So then like, oh, but she's back with him. I'm i drinking like champagne and getting drunk.
Chris Prime: It's what you do. It's like such a rich person idea of getting drunk instead of just like cheap hooch. But then. Who knows? Like you put. Cheap hooching yourself, get in the teleporter.
Chris Prime: And now you're just like constantly drunk or your DNA is like.
Chris Prime: grain alcohol.
Zach Sheets: Instead of like, its yeah, instead of like sneezing like snot, you sneeze out like champagne or something.
Chris Prime: It could be a funny what -if scenario, but... It is the, the the like... the weird rule that this movie puts in where it's like okay doesn it doesn't matter if it's inorganic or Organic material. whatever you have in that pod with you, you're just gonna be part of.
Chris Prime: So.
Zach Sheets: scott Sky...
Chris Prime: You can tell.
Zach Sheets: Sky... Except it's just one thing. That's it. It could only be one. One thing in the pod.
Chris Prime: But like... Germs and bacteria are on people's skin, so... That's also like the... but flaw is that like your skin is crawling with like microorganisms and then it's like well what happens then
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm.
Chris Prime: You're part like... bed bug or your power like Skin eating. like micro... Thing.
Zach Sheets: Well, that's probably part of, like, the sequence that the machine – because, like – It. when When you talk about the first pod, the computer has like your like DNA sequence. of like when you left So it's like using that to rebuild you exactly how you were.
Chris Prime: Okay. Okay.
Chris Prime: So... There is another version. in this movie where Basically, it's the Tron rule where it's like a digital copy. So you just print him out again.
Chris Prime: Like as long as the computer has memory, can't you just like.
Zach Sheets: oh
Chris Prime: Print.
Zach Sheets: but but like Yeah, print a copy.
Chris Prime: Yeah.
Zach Sheets: But, I mean...
Zach Sheets: It seems like, yeah, you probably could do that. That would have been a good like like a backup system. like Oh, just you just in case, like, you know, something goes wrong with, like, Temptation, we got a copy of you.
Chris Prime: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Because it seems like it's not just the teleporter. It's not like the machine to machine. There's a computer that's involved. Which again. He has the software. what Stop what you're doing.
Zach Sheets: he he Yeah, he's...
Chris Prime: Sell the software.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, he he designed all that. like It's a very like custom computer setup he has.
Chris Prime: Mm -hmm. That itself would have been a like. 3d printer to print out organic material unless Unless he explicitly explains. Oh, like.
Chris Prime: I need to insert like. in equal mass. or something to print out. like it you know like just like a printer needs paper and ink like it needs something to Edit.
Zach Sheets: yeah yeah yeah there isn't anything isn't like some weird ma material he has to put it into like uh like the second a pod to like Oh. I have to put in this like bio matter for it to uh rebuild like the the person or the creature that comes out.
Chris Prime: Yeah, see, like... That's why in the third act. It's like, okay, let's take two pods, have a third pod. Third pod is going to contain the combination of. Both. I'm like. That should have been the beginning of the movie.
Chris Prime: But it would have been weird to... try to explain he's like all right i'll take this pod And I take this homeless person like a vagrant.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Yeah.
Chris Prime: And then I transform them into me. And then I become like. The strength of two men.
Chris Prime: And then he just keeps constantly like teleporting people into him to get stronger, absorbing them.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, yeah that would been yeah if they want to make Seth into like a supervillain.
Chris Prime: True, true. it Definitely like a supervillain move to have equal... or like rough material that you can rewrite DNA on. but Yeah, that's why I'm like the third one is like, huh, you really skipped a step to do like a two teleporter to one teleporter move.
Zach Sheets: yes
Chris Prime: But...
Zach Sheets: the Yes.
Chris Prime: It's like...
Zach Sheets: was it They also skipped, too, because I feel like in one in the earlier movies, like shows he's showing around and he's like, oh, yes, my prototype one doesn't really work anymore.
Chris Prime: Yeah, that's what I'm saying. like It's like... why didn't you pay attention to that one earlier the whole like he found like the passion that he kind of figured out the missing calculation
Zach Sheets: And it's like way bigger than the other telepods.
Chris Prime: Yeah. It's like, wait, why is your prototype like way more advanced?
Zach Sheets: Well, I guess the other two are because he's able to like so streamline it down to like like smaller. Smart devices. It's not as bulky as the first one.
Chris Prime: That's true. I mean, yeah, it. it's the only thing to me that that i i kind of can't let go is that was the prototype where he was trying to combine things together. But then he's like, okay, let me take the third one out and just do. 1 -1.
Chris Prime: So it's just two machines. And then it's just basically like the prestige. at that point Where he's like, oh, I'll... you know, I have mass. It's like.
Chris Prime: It moves, but it's not really moving. it's Cloning? but not really cloning.
Zach Sheets: And he's doing most of this when he's like. like deep into like, uh, Sort of like fly mode. Like he's like, it's not like, it's like peak. uh seth like he's like got
Chris Prime: decaying.
Zach Sheets: The insect's mind is, like, almost taking it completely over.
Chris Prime: And it's it's not like...
Zach Sheets: He's trying to like do all this slick stuff.
Chris Prime: That was the so like the world's smartest fly. So like it boosts his brain. You know, like it. it It seemed like. Once he got like, okay, hey, I'm i'm like... Going crazy -er.
Chris Prime: And my mind is more animalistic.
Zach Sheets: who
Chris Prime: I can kind of figure out like. The math.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, because it's like he's being taken over by a much more like primal base. Like. mindset.
Zach Sheets: But he's able to figure out this like... Complex. like algorithm to combine DNA of three people.
Chris Prime: It would have been funny to also grab...
Zach Sheets: Stathis?
Chris Prime: What's his name again? Stanthus. Just be like, you're in too.
Zach Sheets: We're all we're we're one big family. We're all with one big fused family.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, obviously it doesn't work. then We get like the... Like the the devastating ending where like Gene Davis is like. like shoot. this the bird of light I've had with this shotgun and it's like it's like helping her it's like moving the shotgun to its head to like it's like kill me but You can't talk anymore, but it's basically just like saying kill me.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's just like, oh, this isn't. Maybe it's like his last... bit of human shred that's left it's just like oh it failed i'm i'm totally not gonna survive this
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Yes.
Chris Prime: Or he'd be in so much pain, you know, he's just like, oh God, this door.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, he's got a piece of the door and like yeah cables fused into his body now.
Zach Sheets: And it's funny, they were going to end. the movie Like, right after that story of that scene... They were going to, end like, it was it was cut to, like, a... an actually Like a pop song? They had like Brian Ferry from Roxy Music.
Zach Sheets: write like a a song called Help Me.
Chris Prime: Oh my God.
Zach Sheets: And so it was going to be like, it was a cut. It was like, you know, Gene Davis like just claps here and he's crying. And it was a cut to like this like 80s pop song. And everyone's like, like. Yeah, like, David Cronenberg, they all like the song.
Zach Sheets: but there's like yeah this is not fit you can't you can't do this after that like ending This is doesn't work.
Chris Prime: And it makes it like very tasteless at the end.
Zach Sheets: Mm hmm. But it's it's you hear it, it's it's in the scene at the bar. So it's like the song playing it in the background. he He's at the bar doing arm wrestling and everything.
Chris Prime: That's fine. I feel like. hearing the song and And maybe like. because it's sort of a reference to the original. Or like the original 58 movie.
Zach Sheets: Yeah. Yeah, because that's that' like the kind of... A line from the first fly was, help it's like the heat like the human fly in the spider web like help me help me
Zach Sheets: And then this movie has a also like iconic line, which is like, be afraid, be very afraid.
Chris Prime: Oh, that's where this is from.
Zach Sheets: but this is where like This is where that line came from. It's the tagline Nelson Gene Davis says in the movie.
Chris Prime: I think she says it to Stannis.
Zach Sheets: I think to Seth, like when he's like, she's she's like. When he he's like... kind of excited about what's happening to himself. He's like, like like look at what's going on with me it's like No, you that you should be afraid. You should be very afraid.
Chris Prime: Uh... I mean, this was definitely like a... phenomenal movie, phenomenal, like, success because this movie made so much money
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: for the premise and for a horror movie in the 80s that uh I think. It taught people a lot about DNA. Interesting.
Chris Prime: Transporters.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: Because I think... What's another movie that DNA is very important? thing in the 80s.
Zach Sheets: In the 80s?
Chris Prime: Yeah, like the thing. Mimic DNA.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: And then... The fly... Transform DNA.
Zach Sheets: like Like, yeah, like fusion, like fuse DNA.
Chris Prime: I think for me, it's just Jurassic Park. but I mean it's just and ironic because you know
Zach Sheets: okay
Chris Prime: Goldblum.
Zach Sheets: The next. Next big Jeff Goldblum movie. yeah
Chris Prime: But. Yeah. Yeah, I didn't learn about DNA until like... Really dressing park.
Zach Sheets: Well, because you had Mr. DNA to teach you all about it.
Chris Prime: And then they did their own version of the fly, but just... Taking frog DNA. Who knows how many countless frogs they murdered.
Zach Sheets: of the murder flags or just like kind of took some blood out and like but Plop the blood into like a...
Chris Prime: who Who knows?
Zach Sheets: yeah the like Yeah, The Fly, great movie. like I think, like... One of the best like kind of like special effects showcases of the 80s. and and make like special effects and makeup is just like the the transform The gradual transformation of Jeff Goldblum of the movie.
Zach Sheets: to like like The final like fly form is like... Amazing.
Chris Prime: Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: And I think... and then i think Probably one of my favorite David Cronenberg movies.
Chris Prime: Yeah, it's it's a lot to choose from. I think for me, I think... Eastern promises, but that's just a different vibe.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, his history of violence, history of promises are both are both great.
Chris Prime: No, Eastern promises.
Zach Sheets: easter prime yes yeah as i That's what I said.
Chris Prime: History of violence is the other one.
Zach Sheets: Yeah.
Chris Prime: But if you're looking for, like, body horror, traditional body horror, yeah, flies up there. i think videodrome i think is one of my favorite ones but because just it's just unsettling This is just like mad science, and it's like, alright.
Zach Sheets: scanners.
Chris Prime: Scanners is good, yes.
Chris Prime: Naked Lunch is a weird one to recommend just because it just beats you over the head with so much weird visuals. Have you ever seen Naked Lunch?
Zach Sheets: No.
Chris Prime: It's a hard movie to watch sometimes.
Zach Sheets: And i' I haven't seen any of his new movies. like crimes of the future or the shrouds or whatever else he's doing
Chris Prime: yeah me too i haven't seen those Though I heard Crimes of the Future is more like... It does get you back to this level of... Weird science. but I think the marketing was just more confusing.
Chris Prime: And because they were just super vague. about what the movie was about. And then it's like artsy. it's like this movie wasn't artsy uh the fly isn't artsy it's like very straightforward it's just like here's a guy did something kind of terrible with science.
Chris Prime: Pays for it.
Zach Sheets: Yeah, this is this is definitely like a... very like, uh, like easy to get into i mean it' if you're horror if you're like can deal with like all the like you know the goopy special effects And like, but like a very easy to get in. Like some of those movies are just like.
Zach Sheets: very like extreme of like you have to be like a hardcore like Cronenberg body horror fan to get into him.
Chris Prime: Mm hmm. Mm hmm.
Zach Sheets: This is like this is like definitely like one of his like more like mainstream ones.
Chris Prime: Oh, plus it's like a slow... Transformation. over the course of the whole movie.
Zach Sheets: Hmm? Yeah.
Chris Prime: I think in other movies, it's like straight up, hey, this person fused with this or this person, something came out of them. Here's nudity for no reason.
Zach Sheets: Yep.
Chris Prime: Exit Sense was like that. Exit Sense is like high concept.
Chris Prime: I forgot I've seen Exit Sense at some point. I gotta watch it again, but it's... It's
Zach Sheets: but Yeah, four years later, definitely The Fly still holds up. Definitely, if you haven't seen it in a while, check it out.
Zach Sheets: And come back next week where we're diving into a Jason Statham movie because we got a new Jason Statham movie in theaters, Mutiny. So we were talking about another recent one. A working man?
Zach Sheets: That was the... it was I think the... is Second David Ayer team up because he they did the beekeeper and they're like, let's do another one.
Zach Sheets: And i think I think next year we're getting Beekeeper 2. So they're back at it again.
Zach Sheets: But yeah, we' we're be able but but i would like, that it's a. It seems like it's it's first seems like it's like a straightforward jazzy movie, but then it gets kind of like weirdly complicated. Super. We'll dive into all that next next week.
Zach Sheets: And I have to say, we all use stuff out there. We got news or reviews, trailers. Actually, surprise me about trailers. It seems like the standard blockbusters are done. But still like tons of shows are coming out for like fall and. uh like even like next year movies so Check out all those on the site.
Zach Sheets: And, yes, so for Chris, I'm Zach, and we will see you next time.
