Matt James' Music Career and Personal Life

00:03:45
Speaker
so Matt, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do.
00:03:51
Speaker
Well, as you know, but Matt James, Matt X James, if you're if you're looking for me online, um um I make music, man. That's that what we do. We do what we love. We love to make music. I'm a father.
00:04:04
Speaker
That's my most important job in the wide world. But other than that, just taking care of my kiddo and just chasing this dream with Ronnie, man. We're just trying to make it. I think you guys are doing a fantastic job, man.
00:04:18
Speaker
Amanda, what's happening? How are you?
00:04:22
Speaker
um We are we are trying to assist in that by, you know, obviously you have a lot of followers. We're trying to help with just getting, a you know, if we get you like three more followers, I think we're doing OK. Yeah, I appreciate every follower.
00:04:36
Speaker
I think absolutely. We do the same thing. We ah appreciate everybody that follows and watches and tunes in as well. um yeah So how did you get how did you how did you find yourself?
00:04:49
Speaker
Wanting to do it Before we came on the show, we kind of skirted around. It's not really rap. it's It's kind of a blend, right? It's a blend of. Yeah, thank you. Yeah, that's what I would call it.
00:05:03
Speaker
Yeah, it started off, man. I was a hip hop head when I was a young guy, man. I just wanted to be in those rap circles so bad. um um and still do, you know, to an extent. But I think overall it just kind of evolved over time. You know, you get older, like, you know, when you're when you're pushing 40, you're like, you know, do I really want to be out here rapping all the time? So I had to evolve and, you know, just, you know, change with the music and change with the times. And so just tried to add a little bit different flavors to it. before I knew it, it was just, we're like all over the place now.
00:05:36
Speaker
but there And there's nothing wrong with that because I don't think that music should be encompassed in one genre quite you know quite honestly i feel like if you like over the years they've over the years they've changed it where we have rap and country go together i mean it all started in the 80s 90s when you know um rapping uh or who was it uh run dmc and uh and the rock and roll rap mix has been around for a long time yeah day
00:06:08
Speaker
Natasha says little bro with a little heart. there What up sis? Love you girl. Alyssa says sometimes the best it's the best music. You're absolutely right. Like I said, don't put a don't put it in ah in a category.
00:06:22
Speaker
No reason to label it. People ask this all the time. what do you What kind of music do you make? I'm always like, ah you know what? Just go listen to it and you and you decide. You decide. you know Yeah, exactly. When I first listened to it, brian was like ah Ronnie was like, well, go listen to this guy.
00:06:38
Speaker
I'm like, okay, I listened to it. I sent it to Brian. Brian was like, okay, what else does he got? I said, well, he gave me two songs to listen to. So I did that. And then I started listening to more. I'm like, okay, you know and I'm not one for rap, to be honest. Or heavy rock.
00:06:57
Speaker
No, heavy rock, that's different. um I can deal with certain things. But, you know, real bad rap, I don't like, you know. certain words I just can't stand song. He also doesn't like when little kids walk across his lawn. He's over there going, get around, this is the neighborhood. Little kids don't walk across my lawn.
00:07:19
Speaker
I got a fence up. It's my side of the fence. Alex Hill says, you'll always have bars. Don't let them fool you He's not wrong.
00:07:33
Speaker
That's ours. That's what it is. Thank you, April. I agree. I think the collection of what we have is is special together, you know.

Significance of Matt's Music and School Experiences

00:07:43
Speaker
And for the people that don't know what his music sounds like, halfway through the show, we're going to play one song and then we're going to end the show with a another song.
00:07:53
Speaker
Something that we started with Ronnie and I think we'll start doing that more with any musicians that we come up that come on we definitely appreciate it yeah those are my those are my two favorite ones just because the the they mean so much to me for different for multiple reasons i mean those two mean a lot to me before we play them we're gonna have you uh tell why right um and black sheep was i think i didn't think i was gonna like that song because you know that's that's actually my favorite one yeah i love i i like i like i like both songs
00:08:29
Speaker
but I think Black Sheep was more my favorite. And because I think it hits more than the other one. Yeah. But yeah. The other one has more meaning and i think Black Sheep is is, we made just to be more of a hard hitting like Batman style, you know, just something dark and so what the heck?
00:08:50
Speaker
is said how thanks jonathan yeah out of here gone good go yeah ronnie We need to talk after awesome ryan i talk after this. Yeah, we we have a show Saturday night in Litchfield at the Moose Lodge. So we're just brushing up. It's one thing that me and Ronnie and KJ do is is we rehearse.
00:09:13
Speaker
and we we make sure that we put on a good show and you do that by repetition so that's know we're down here working and doing this at the same time so you mentioned kj who is she that's my beautiful niece kj mcguire um crazy talented artist she's got some new music coming soon too uh she's on black sheep with me um yeah you know that's my she's one of my best friends to tell you the truth but yeah she's also my niece too and she's crazy talented insanely talented
00:09:43
Speaker
So you guys are taking it to the moon, though, because I mean, we know that Ronnie now has the the newest album um that just dropped with One Fight in the have Dude, that that song really hits me, bro. Like yeah like I told him. I get goosebumps when I just talk about that song. I mean, should have at the pop-up show, and we're going to talk about that. grown men in tears like you know you're doing something when you've got people that feel it that hard or that much and that's what Ronnie's doing he's connecting with his people and thing is he's always been like that I can tell you stories about going to shows when he could have been back in VIP with all the you know the the bigger people and he's still out there with his people he's he's a loyal dude man like the sky that all the way up for him
00:10:29
Speaker
That's really good, man. We're glad to hear that you support him like that too. ah I would like to talk about your launches. what is in the What's in the pipeline? What's cooking?
00:10:42
Speaker
So um I got a bunch of stuff going on, man. That's what I've been doing the most is cooking, just kind of letting these couple songs marinate. One Foot in the Grave is doing so good right now. So that's that's like the main push. Like that's the the powerhouse song right now. So let's push that as hard as we can. um i have a new song. I did a preview of at the pop-up show called All In with an amazing artist named Molly Seaton. um And it's that's going to be probably the next one up for us. It's a slower country song, but it it hits you right in the feels.
00:11:12
Speaker
if you've seen a clip of it online or not, but it's kind of getting around there a little bit. But that's going to be the next one. I've got one called Half a Dream with Tanner I'm looking to drop soon. Really, there's so much, so many projects that we're working on, but it's just you know trying to coordinate those drops and make sure we're hitting as far as we can, man. Yeah.
00:11:34
Speaker
before you got on that juji marie Matt, nice to see you doing well. Hearts. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much. Before you came on, I was talking to Brian. I was telling her about the pop-up shows and I found Ronnie's what when he did at the pop-up show, but I couldn't find yours. I seen it the first day that you put it out there, but I couldn't find it afterwards.
00:11:57
Speaker
cause i yeah che his pal Yeah, it's just kind of out there. you know There'll be so much more content for that kind of stuff. We're on that too. That's the part where I'm trying to like get better at and keep up at and learn as an artist because you wear many hats. and i watch Ronnie wear like every hat that just possibly made and i'm just trying to you know keep up some days. But that's just that's just what you got to do. And I'm trying to adapt to that and be more creative with my stuff. And and we got big a big push coming for all that too. so is there Is there an opportunity for a matt james's Matt James to take the one foot in the grave and do a remix?
00:12:41
Speaker
Because I know, just like it was stated up here, that you got bars. My question would be, do we take one foot in the grave because it's doing so well, and do we put a spin do Matt James spin on it as far as, like So I would, if Ronnie came to me and he said, hey, I want to do that, I'd do it so fast, my head would spin. But there's some songs, man, that are just like, you know, there's going to be songs at the end of the day that you just don't touch. I believe that. I believe that. And I think right now, i just,
00:13:15
Speaker
I wouldn't want to touch it yet because I don't think it's, it's the fire still burning on that one. And I don't want to go, you know, not that it wouldn't be amazing to do it, yeah but I'm open to it, but that song is so powerful by itself. I don't, it's just, we just got to let that one go, let it ride up.
00:13:32
Speaker
Okay. Okay. Good to know. I mean, look, these are questions that people are going to want to know. I mean, I'm not the only person out there thinking this, I'm sure. Okay. Um, yeah but before we came on, Mark and were having a conversation and Mark had clued me into something.
00:13:50
Speaker
Oh, email but you mean the thing that me and him, me and Matt were talking about last week? Uh, so I got a question. Uh, WWE, DNA, AEW, OVW. What's your, what's your go-to?
00:14:09
Speaker
uh man you know i'm a i'm a fed head man you know i'm an old school fed head uh i don't do the flippy flips and all that stuff man i'm not i'm old school i like the stories you know i'm not i can't sit there and watch it anymore you know as much as when i was younger but um i like knowing what's going on and like going to the shows and stuff and yelling at people just as much as everybody but yeah i like the more old school man i'm know i'm a i'm onk so you know He said, I'm going to undertake a walk in the ropes. Yeah, man, I like that kind of stuff, man. I like watching the old stuff more than anything. But, um yeah, I was telling him, like, I've i've been to a couple of WrestleManias, and I've got a couple. i' I'm a dork at heart, for sure.
00:14:48
Speaker
For sure. there's nothing There's nothing wrong with that, man. There is nothing wrong with that at all. We always just keep that pile the side. That's all. Look, you don't think Mark's important? Yeah. I like it. I like it. Old Intercontinental.
00:15:03
Speaker
And then I have, you know, the 10 pounds of gold. one of my One of my good friends, Jason Waldron, Sherlock J. Wall, he's got a bunch of belts like that too. and me and him have always been, you know, old school wrestling fans. And and my buddy Skip going to WrestleMania. One of my favorite memories ever was going to WrestleMania with him and his mom. And there's some old pictures. If you dig them out, you can find them. But I dressed up as Dusty Rowe. It was just a while. nice. I know. i yeah I went to two WrestleMania's WrestleMania three and WrestleMania 24.
00:15:39
Speaker
I had more memory because of WrestleMania 24 because I went with my daughter. Oh, that's awesome. That's awesome. Yeah. We got to see Ric Flair, you know, retire there.
00:15:51
Speaker
Yeah. WrestleMania three was the very first time I ever seen a wrestling match. And, you know, it hooked me and I've been a fan ever since. yeah I even, you're going to love this. I'm used to that. She's mad because I used to put her in the sharpshooter when we were kids, you know? um But I actually have a song with an artist named Cornbread from Springfield, Illinois called Macho Man that I will preview for you. I'll send it to you, Mark, here soon once we get the the first track on it done. it's ah It's a little different. It's something I think you're going to like.
00:16:28
Speaker
Tell me about it. Hold on. ah go Go back up to Ronnie. Okay. Tell them about the hit man.
00:16:36
Speaker
The hit man. Yeah, that's what the. What it says. Oh, yeah. right He's funny. ah you more You know this. Like, so back in the day, you remember the hit man when he used to like give the glasses to the kids?
00:16:49
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So the one of the very first wrestling shows I ever went to when I was a kid, it was with me and my brother. And we used to get there at the Springfield Prairie Capitol Convention Center and we'd get there kind of early.
00:16:59
Speaker
And just so we could walk around the building and try to like holler at the wrestlers and try to get photos. And um we saw a guy who was smoking a cigarette. and He was like on the side of the building. and We walked up, got closer and closer. And we got there, me and my brother. And it was Britt the Hitman Hartman.
00:17:14
Speaker
And he had the WWF at the time belt sitting on a blue bag and he was smoking a cigarette. And the first thing he said was he flicked a cigarette. He said, don't do those. Like, as you know, smoking is bad. And he let me hold the belt. I remember holding it thinking like it was going to be light, but it was like heavy, man, like a 20 pound dumbbell.
00:17:33
Speaker
And then later on in the show, once we got in the arena and when he used to go around and take those glasses off and put them on a kid's head, he put them on mine, came home with them that night. And they've been they've been lost ever since then. But unfortunately. But yeah, that was one of the coolest, coolest little old school fan memories I have.
00:17:52
Speaker
That's cool. Yeah, I don't have any, you know, and I don't have no nothing to do with the pros per se, but NXT, that's a different story. We get to watch it here in our county. They come to us and I've got an picture with Ron Breaker and I can't remember who else.
00:18:09
Speaker
Nice, nice. Yeah, that's cool. Axion? No, his tag team partner. I can't remember his freaking name right now. Yeah. yeah I don't remember his name either. I can't keep up with all the names and stuff anymore, but yeah. it's like i a I'm a big time wrestling fan, so I watch any time wrestling. I'm going to ask this one now. So this is from your sister. Ask him about wrestling his sister.
00:18:32
Speaker
He had me in a few headlocks growing up after school. We're not going turn this into a wrestling podcast, y'all. You can't meet up your sister.
00:18:43
Speaker
Well, who says? um Yeah, she's my big sis. She's couple years older. So like when I was a kid, she used to walk through the hallway and I'd catch her and my leg lock her up. wo you know like Do my elbow drops and you know practice my moves and stuff. you know cause I thought I was going to be the champ of the world one day. Like every kid, right?
00:19:05
Speaker
KJ's on and she says, yes, macho man. Yeah, Macho Man. Yeah, she's talking about the song. Yeah, i got this the song Macho Man is going to be. Yeah, I can't wait to hear that one.
00:19:17
Speaker
And Ronnie says the greatest wrestler is the one, two, three kid
00:19:23
Speaker
kid. ah I don't know about all that. Anyway. Yeah, i don't know. anyway um When you were in high school, middle school, that kind of stuff, did you were

Early Music Career and Inspiration Behind 'The Way I Feel'

00:19:35
Speaker
you in band? Were you in chorus, any of that?
00:19:40
Speaker
No, man. I was in high school. I was probably more of i just kind of got in everywhere with everybody. I didn't do much.
00:19:51
Speaker
i really didn't get into music too much until after high school. I think I was 19 when I recorded my first song with ah Eddie Baldwin. Shout out to EB. uh, from Jacksonville. Um, it wasn't a good song. I'm just going to be honest. Those first, uh, those first couple of years were a trial and error, but that's, I think everybody goes through that. You look back on some of the old stuff and you get to have a smile on your face. Cause you're like, man, I can't believe I thought that was cool.
00:20:16
Speaker
It happens. Listen, yeah we, uh, I was sitting out on my porch one day and my, ah my friend's father had passed away and we were over at his house and So he brought up, he brought a box out of his trunk.
00:20:31
Speaker
Well, this was years ago, ah but he brought a box out of his trunk and it literally had a boombox with a tape player. And we had a bunch of tapes.
00:20:42
Speaker
Now, back in the day, we used to put tape over the back of the tapes that you could record over the tape. I'm not a little too, bro. I'm not. So you know talking about, Matt? Like these young kids, they don't have a clue. They're like, what the fuck is a tape deck?
00:20:57
Speaker
And, uh, yeah, I would tape over her tapes. is She's still on there. she tell yeah I used to, I used to tape over her tapes all time and she gets super pissed. Uh, and I can tell you this much.
00:21:11
Speaker
I thought i was a rapper in high school. I was terrible. So bad, bro. like So was your friend. And so was my friend, yes. Alan was fucking trash, too. like i Why didn't we even try this, bro? like like This is not... Were you brave enough to do it, though?
00:21:31
Speaker
We did not get on stage, but I will tell you this much. We did start a rock band that lasted about two weeks called Tsunami. Tsunami. I like it. That's about two weeks.
00:21:43
Speaker
my Tsunami. Yeah, yeah. and he gets He gets it. Oh, yeah. I know talking about. But, um yeah. But I thought for sure that I was like, dude, back in the day, you know we were all crossed out, you know crisscross.
00:21:59
Speaker
Everybody did it. If you didn't do it, then you weren't doing it right. Talking about Daddy Mac will make you jump. That's right. That's right. Crisscross will make jump. Yeah. So we had to make our own. We had to make our own raps. We had to do our own thing. So you know hey, let's let's put this beat down, play this ah instrumental.
00:22:17
Speaker
And then what we'll do, we'll just make our own rap. And we'll put it on tape. And this will last forever, bro. And it was bad. it was so bad that I was like, my daughters came over and we were chilling and we were out on the front porch and I asked my oldest daughter, i said, hey, take this tape right here and put it in that boom box and play that. And you can hear what your dad used to do.
00:22:40
Speaker
And she played it. Well, she tried to figure out how to put the tape in. That was funny because she's never seen one before. So she tried it like three different ways and then finally got it. And she was like, I think that's how it goes. I was like, you're absolutely right.
00:22:54
Speaker
And then she was like, dad I'm so glad you did not decide to make that a career. You never know. You may have gotten really good at it. That's the thing is is sometimes with with practice, you can.
00:23:06
Speaker
But some people got it. They don't. That does happen a lot. There's some people you can't for 20 years and still not have it, you know, like. I don't. Listen, I don't even want it like, i I think it's funny to watch people sing and then you just turn the music down real fast on the radio when they're singing with a song.
00:23:22
Speaker
Because you find out, are they really good? Are they correct? The old car test, the old karaoke test. know what I'm talking about, right? Yes. Yes. Ladies and gentlemen. No?
00:23:36
Speaker
No. Oh. We want to play song first. Oh, we got a song that we want to play? Yeah, before we you know we'll bring the person that's going to play Florida or not Florida. What song do you think you want to play, Mark?
00:23:50
Speaker
Which one? Well, I have. Oh, shit. No, I don't. Auto-tune makes everyone a pro. Maybe now, but we didn't have that back in ninety um We're going to play, a which one is it?
00:24:11
Speaker
Black Sheep is at the end. And we're going to play, I got it broke down here, The Way I Feel. Why the hell do I need that? So I said before we bring that song on, I'm going to have you explain about that song.
00:24:29
Speaker
Oh, man. ah ah So the way I feel was it's just it's it's so much for.
00:24:42
Speaker
I didn't write it just for everybody, it worked for myself to like anybody struggling with like mental health. You've been at that moment like where you feel like you're at rock bottom. I think everybody successful has definitely been there before. um And it's just one of those songs that I just had to like get it all out there.
00:24:59
Speaker
um At one time I was going through some stuff that was really heavy. um And yeah, man, that's, you know, It's almost hard to talk about, be truthful. But so I wrote that song. i put it together and um i saw Ronnie had kind of switched up his music a lot because back in the day we were just you know a couple of rappers. Right. Yeah. um I saw Fire and Rain.
00:25:25
Speaker
Right. And um you guys just heard that and took a video for it. Beautiful video, beautiful song. And I was like, I just I just love the direction that Ronnie was going in. and So I just like, let me shoot him over this song and say, hey, would you want to maybe jump on this with me and kind of come pull your heart out with me? And he chose to do so because he liked the song. um And little did I know that that song would bring, you know, so many friendships and so much like life changing moments and um that the song is so special to me for more than just the song itself, more than the video, just the the relationships that have been built off the song um are way more important to me than the song will ever be. So, but yeah, so not to get a long winded answer, but in the course with the video, um having so much, you know, meaning to all of us, you know, with Simi, shout Simi.
00:26:22
Speaker
It's just it's real heavy and it's all real and it's all um everybody just kind of put their heart into that video, into the song, into the whole the whole project really between, you know, Phil Watson and 55 North Creative House, you know, to Ronnie to myself to, you know, Simi being brave enough to even be in the video and and and tell and know the story.
00:26:43
Speaker
His own story um was was big for us and for him and for everybody. OK. I like that. Yeah. You ready for the song?
00:26:55
Speaker
Yeah. Let's play it. Let's play it.
00:27:31
Speaker
It might be the pain, might be the pressure, might be the way I feel. It might be the game that we can't change, maybe the way she's still. Deep in my head, I can't explain, that's just the way feel.
00:27:44
Speaker
The way feel.
00:27:48

It might be the pain, might be the pressure, might be the way I feel. It might be the game that we can't change, maybe the way she's still. Deep in my head I can't explain, that's just the way I feel.
00:28:01
Speaker
The way feel.
00:28:05
Speaker
I've been going in, getting faded. Depression sitting in, never made it. Finally feel like I might look myself in the mirror for the last time.
00:28:21
Speaker
I ain't going through it, I ain't going through it, ain't living my life this way. My castle was guarded, my demons retired, the devil's not getting no play. I'm back on my own these days.
00:28:32
Speaker
No longer in my own way I hit my knees and pray You know I'm bound to say It might be the pain, might be the pressure Might be the way I feel It might be the game that we can't change Maybe the way she's still Deep in my head I can't explain That's just the way feel The way feel
00:28:55
Speaker
It might be the pain, might be the pressure, might be the way I feel. It might be the game that we can't change, maybe the way she's still. Deep in my head, I can't explain, that's just the way I feel.
00:29:08
Speaker
The way I feel.
00:29:17
Speaker
Won't you consider me?
00:29:22
Speaker
Getting harder to breathe, that's why I bite till it bleeds and wipe the blood away clean. Enemies, we fight the machine, feeling mystic, deciphering dreams. When I write through the mind of a king, turn divine like the highest of beings.
00:29:36
Speaker
In between all the silence and screams, if the demons, they might intervene. Within shadows, they're hiding unseen. I came from the darkness with liars and thieves. Could you still take my hand, even though I will sin?
00:29:52
Speaker
Sometimes it feels no one understands that I'm a broken man, but feel alive again.
00:30:23
Speaker
Units respond to Ridge Avenue. We got report a male subject on a bridge. Possible a jump birth. Mental health crisis. It might be the pain, might be the pressure, might be the way I feel.
00:30:35
Speaker

00:31:17
Speaker
That is something that I think if you put that in front of, like, a bunch of the military guys that have these struggles with ah PTSD and, you know, that trauma and stuff, I think that you're going to get think that you would probably get a lot more actually more feedback there too um yeah speaking of that uh i would absolutely and and mark's one probably hate me for it but i would absolutely love to play that song on our military show well i got ideas for it okay um would it be okay if we put together a video montage
00:31:57
Speaker
100% guys. Yeah, for sure. And basically use a, ah like a military kind of thing for that. And yeah the music that would be fantastic. And we appreciate that. Yeah, 100%. Yep. Ronnie's got a new one, too, that he's pretty much doing for the soldiers, too. Yeah, we're talking with Ronnie on that. We're talking with Ronnie. Okay, okay. I figured. I figured. I figured. I just did. We're trying to keep it on the table for a second just because we want people to tune in. We want people to know what's happening. We want people to see what's happening and how you guys are evolving.
00:32:32
Speaker
and And if we can be there to help do that, we really appreciate the opportunity to do so. You know what i mean? So so thank you guys for allowing us to play your music. It's absolutely fantastic. Thank you.
00:32:43
Speaker
Thank you. No worries. Thank you guys for playing it. Fifty five productions. Is that what it's called? ah That'd be 55 North, which is 55 Creative House. Yeah, it's Phil Watson. He's the best video guy, if you want you can need that kind of stuff. Holler at them, 55 North. um The song was engineered by John Smith, another one of my very good friends. He's you know the best.
00:33:06
Speaker
um And of course, it was Ronnie just blessing the hell out of the song, man. That's what made it. you know At first, it was it was like a shell, and we just kind of you know just- I don't know, man. think you could have done it without Ronnie.
00:33:19
Speaker
yeah yeah i mean like the guy no i love it we absolutely yeah no i wouldn't want to do it i wouldn't want do without him ever okay song's over yep uh i i just want to go through the comments real quick uh david hall said that was fire of course ronnie um wanted to you know post uh samara lawson rest easy Yeah, rest in peace, Samara. don't want to leave that out for sure. That's in that video. That was for her, right?
00:33:58
Speaker
that was that was for her right yeah Yeah, the video at the end, um yeah, that was it's kind of what it ended with was Simi telling that story you know because he lost his beautiful daughter and and you just trying to raise some awareness. That's why we put the the hotline on the end for the suicide hotline awareness and just trying to keep that you know that mental health awareness that's important and it's okay to not be okay.
00:34:26
Speaker

Just all it takes you is a phone call. I don't care if I barely know you. You want to call me? You got a problem? Call me.

00:39:09
Speaker
ah It was great. she goes but you' well Well, at least it was a frozen smile. Yeah, there you go. yeah Yeah. Yeah, my inspiration's got to be my daughter. as As corny as it sounds, she's the reason why I got back into music.
00:39:25
Speaker
i didn't make I didn't make anything for probably a decade almost, if not longer. i mean, may have been a little so little spurts here and there, but as far as like taking it serious and actually doing it's going to sound really cheesy, but it's so true. One day, we she came home from school.
00:39:39
Speaker
And she was talking about how they had to say what they wanted to be when they grow up, what their dream was. And she was like, oh, my dream is to do this and this and this. And I and i gave her that speech that every you know father gives their child that says, you can do whatever you want as long as you believe in yourself, as long as you put the practice forward and just keep believing in it. And no matter what I tell you, even if I tell you no, you still go chase that dream.
00:40:02
Speaker
And she literally was like, what's your dream then, daddy? Yeah. if i know boys She can't date until she's 30 anyway. We'll be fine.
00:40:13
Speaker
Yeah, but no, she asked me what my dream was and I told her, I said, you know, I wanted to make music and she she was just, it was like that moment of like, how can I tell her she's supposed to chase her dreams if I'm not chasing mine?
00:40:27
Speaker
You know, and that's where that's when it all became. k KJ will tell you the same thing. It all just kind of started and then, you know, it came from just showing her a little little snippets of songs that hey I got this itch. you got You know, before I knew it, it was just like, oh, we're back, baby. We're back, baby.
00:40:43
Speaker
You know, KJ, OK, we're good now. I think we're good. i don't know what happened, but we're good. We got you. We got you now. you' I think you turned the phone and then now all of a sudden it works.
00:40:54
Speaker
It works. That's a hell of a surprise, guys. appreciate it. Matt, James, and KJ. Guys, how do you know each other?
00:41:04
Speaker
I've known her for a little bit. You can't see the reason for a little bit. Only about 28 years. Okay. Yeah. yeah I held her know when she was a baby. That makes me old. I'm onk out here, guys. um No, that's my niece. That's my beautiful, talented niece. One of my best friends in this whole wide world. That's KJ McGuire, guys.
00:41:24
Speaker
It's such a pleasure working with the family too. It's it's a real honor for sure. Yeah, be careful. I heard working with family can be hard, man. My my wife and daughter worked together for three years and they finally broke up.
00:41:38
Speaker
Yeah, nothing not they still allow for us. Not for us. I know it sounds like it's easy to say, but we're just, we're yeah. We're tight.
00:41:50
Speaker
For sure. Awesome. Well, thank you, KJ, for joining us here on the Matt James. oh now we Before we play the the game, it's funny because when I messaged her, she said, yeah, she'd come on.
00:42:04
Speaker
I told her 830 our time because, you know, people in cit are in Central time don't think Eastern. um And she goes, ah I can do it, but I can only do it from 830 until 845.
00:42:19
Speaker
Well, your time's up. Hey, no, look, we're good. We're in it now. She's the boss over there, so she should be OK. Yeah, we'll be all good. All right, guys, the name of the game is called

00:42:32
Speaker
Florida or Not Florida. What happens here is I read five headlines. And now I'm going to give you little background, something new, little something new for those of you in the chat that like to play the game.
00:42:45
Speaker
Mark's going to watch the chat this time. He's going to figure out who all he's got. I always watch the chat and very easy game. If you win, if you guys win, we're going to send you guys some of these.

00:43:44
Speaker
He had been kicked out of a local pirate festival earlier in the day for excessive enthusiasm, which apparently meant you like he was yelling, surrender your booty to everyone.
00:43:57
Speaker
So he went home, he grabbed his costume, he loaded his antique musket with hot dogs.
00:44:06
Speaker
Because gunpowder evidently is just too expensive. i think he marched he he marched down main street like a discount jack sparrow when police arrived he saluted them and shouted prepare to be boarded they were not amused was this a florida or not florida incident oh my god oh man don't know that's pretty crazy i'm go i'm gonna say that's that's a florida incident kj's going florida on this and matt has left the building
00:44:40
Speaker

It's got to be like Kentucky or somewhere like you know like Alabama or something. So my thought process on this, just so you guys know, I'm going to say not Florida, but I already know where it's at. So you can go with me or whatever you want to do. So Matt, I got you. You better
00:45:36
Speaker
but it's a america All right, you're back. We're back. It's funny. right It's funny. every day is the internet bill Everybody said Florida.
00:45:49
Speaker
guys in florida ah It's to be like Ohio or something. Let's see.
00:46:00
Speaker
Indeed, it was Florida.
00:46:03
Speaker
it was a florida man congratulations to everyone in the comments and matt and kj congratulations on that all right yeah here's your next headline guys man uses chicken as the identification this man walked into a bank holding a live chicken like it was a passport when the teller asked for an id he probably had up held up the bird and said This here proves I'm a local.
00:46:33
Speaker
Turns out he named the chicken Clucky Balboa and claimed it was a it was famous on TikTok, which he believed counted as government documentation. The chicken was calm. The man was not.
00:46:46
Speaker
He was escorted out after the chicken pooped on the counter, which honestly felt like the chicken's way of saying, i don't know this guy. Is this a incident for not Florida incident incident?
00:46:59
Speaker
That sounded like that may have happened right here in Illinois. I mean, I know some people who could that. That gives me Indiana vibes. That gives me I'm not messing around vibes. um that's not That's not Florida. That's not Florida. That's um that's some us.
00:47:18
Speaker
You think that's Chicago, Illinois area? i don't think No, it's not Chicago. no It's like down south, bottom of Illinois. like That's what that is. So once again, you don't think this is like one of those, thin air and air and air and air and air and air now you don't think, like nothing like that?
00:47:34
Speaker
Maybe, but I don't think it's Florida. Nope, i don't think Florida either. All right. What we got in the chat, guys? What is the chat saying, Mark? I'm not looking at it. i'm not looking at it. will You'll go and find out when I tell you.
00:47:49
Speaker
I'm waiting for the chat. the guy The folks in the chat are playing. They love this game. I don't know why. David is there. It's a good game. It's fun game.
00:48:01
Speaker
If you don't put your answer up there, you got 10 seconds, guys. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4. Oh, wait. That's way too fast. Sorry. Come on, David.
00:48:12
Speaker
Come on, David. Get your answer in there. David. You can't look it up. Don't look it up. It's like it's not fair. Did he get it? Hey, if you if you look it up, David, you're going to have to pay me money.
00:48:24
Speaker
yeah we leave like Leave Uncle Chad out of this. Here it goes, guys.
00:48:33
Speaker
Florida. What? Florida. Y'all got chickens in Florida? If it had been an alligator... Now, if they would have said a guy walks into a... you know with an alligator, i' have been like, Florida, bro.
00:48:45
Speaker
yeah everyone like um Everybody got that one wrong. Except Josh. He started playing out on this one, but he got it right. right, guys, here's your next question.
00:48:59
Speaker
The sock-stealing ghost. Woman had a perfectly normal life until she noticed her laundry basket was losing socks at a rate that defiled physics.
00:49:12
Speaker
Defy, excuse me, defied. Woof. Defied physics. Instead of assuming that the dryer ate them like the rest of us, she jumped straight to paranormal theft.
00:49:23
Speaker
She even set up a baby monitor to catch the ghost in the act. All she caught was her cat dragging socks under the bed. But by then she had already called the paranormal investigator, a priest. And it finally, the police who gently suggested try folding them in pairs.
00:49:40
Speaker
Is this a Florida woman or some other kind of crazy woman? I'm going to say no, it's not Florida, only because that just sounds like people are are really bored.
00:49:51
Speaker
You guys aren't as bored in Florida, I think. Oh, no, we got too much going on down here. And by law of odds, I'm going to say at the first two of Florida, what's the odds? The third one's going be Florida, too. So I'm going to not Florida. Maybe they're all Florida.
00:50:05
Speaker
I don't think it's Florida. You don't think it's Florida, and you don't think it's Florida. Sounds like some Ohio stuff to do for sure. I was going to say that. Ohio, what I've been told about Ohio is Ohio is the little brother to Florida. Is anybody seeing that? Is that accurate?
00:50:26
Speaker
It can be.
00:50:29
Speaker
I'm too close to them to talk smack, man. They can come right over here. They know where you live. Yeah. Well, they don't know where you live because you you're over at Ronnie's, so you're good. Don't worry about it.
00:50:40
Speaker
Just don't go home tonight. Right. right Okay. What do we got in the chat, guys? Still waiting on a few more. are we waiting on? ah I apologize, guys. the The chat's a little behind because there's a delay.
00:50:59
Speaker
Don't make me come to Michigan and kick your butt. All right. Here we go. It's coming out, guys. Ready? This happened in... Where?
00:51:12
Speaker
yeah Where? Virginia.
00:51:18
Speaker
So very good. It was not Florida. You got it. I guess I can't trip you up or can I?
00:51:27
Speaker
right, here we go. right. The headline reads, go faster car artist. This guy saw himself as a vigilante for speed. He believed that the world was full of slow energy.
00:51:43
Speaker
And his mission was to motivate the masses. So he grabbed a paintbrush and he started tagging random parked cars with the words, go faster, like some kind of motivational Banksy.
00:51:57
Speaker
When he arrested when he was arrested, he told the police that he was unlocking the car's potential. The police unlocked handcuffs instead.
00:52:10
Speaker
Is this we had didn't he had good intentions? um me God, this one's probably the toughest one because I mean, sounds like something happened in California or something. It does sound like something would happen in Chicago, too. um I'm going to say Florida on this going to say Florida.
00:52:28
Speaker
Is that your gut? That's my gut. My gut saying Florida. I don't think Florida. My mind's telling me no. my buddy jj Talk to me. talk Talk to me, KJ. What do you think here?
00:52:40
Speaker
I don't think it's nothing in Florida. I don't. I just feel like that's very Chicago, Cali, just city stuff. don't want to change my answer, but you're making me want to change my answer.
00:52:55
Speaker
Yeah, no, I'm going to say not Florida. I'm going to stick to it. I'm going say Florida.
00:53:01
Speaker
KJ, what were you saying? You you think where? I feel like this is more of like Chicago, just like a big city, just because like everything and everything happens there. Why is that? Because everybody in Chicago thinks that that you have to go faster? is that is that the...
00:53:17
Speaker
It could be a mix of different things. Chicago is just Chicago. I feel like there's there's everything and anything there. You just hear the most wildest stuff, and that would probably be on the list there. right i thinking I'm thinking Florida, Talladega Nights, Ricky Bobby. Let's go. Talladega's not Florida.
00:53:37
Speaker
we got mean I know, I'm just thinking like, that's what yeah, the Daytona 500. That's what I'm thinking. the Daytona, okay i yeah if you ain't first, you're last, you know? So maybe it happened in, where is Talladega, Mark?
00:53:52
Speaker
Alabama. So maybe it happened in Alabama. All right. What do we got in the comments over there, Mark? Let's do it. You ready? Yeah.
00:54:03
Speaker
Guys, let's see.
00:54:09
Speaker
Illinois. What? That happened in Illinois, guys. So listen, you might want to go find out ah who your who your who your neighbor is because God dang, boy.
00:54:24
Speaker
Ronnie, you've been talking cars again.
00:54:28
Speaker
Sorry. No, you're good. And that was number four, right? Last one. Guys, here is your last one.
00:54:38
Speaker
And the headline reads, traffic light camper. Man climbed a traffic light with a backpack, a hammock, could ro you laughing the me and a public sub when he when asked why he was up there, he said he was escaping the noise of society while sitting above six lane a six lane intersection.
00:55:02
Speaker
He stayed up there for hours, waving at confused drivers like they like he was the mayor of chaos. Firefighters eventually got him down by offering him a Gatorade and promised him a better view on the ground.
00:55:16
Speaker
All right. I gave you a couple of clues there. Is this Florida or not Florida? Florida. gonna Florida. Gator. You gave me the Gator clue, the Gatorade.
00:55:27
Speaker
It's for the Florida Gators.
00:55:31
Speaker
That and then the six lanes, too. I feel like, I mean, that's I know there's many places with that, but. There's a lot of places to have six lanes. California. California. Atlanta. I like that. Atlanta. I'm going to go go of Florida.
00:55:45
Speaker
I'm going to with Florida. If it's Florida or us, I'm going to go with Florida. Let's do this.
00:55:52
Speaker
Everybody's in? Everybody's time Ladies and gentlemen.
00:55:57
Speaker
Ladies and gentlemen. Florida man. It indeed happened right here in Florida. i think that the public club had to be one of the giveaways.
00:56:13
Speaker
i guess there's publics in Texas reporting to my wife.
00:56:17
Speaker
i would be a Gatorade. Gatorade was made for the Florida Gators. That's why they call it Gatorade.
00:56:25
Speaker
so florida takes that loss unfortunately guys that's our game florida or not florida mark you want to tell everybody how that how you're grading them on a curve outside of a public we actually have two uh well two tied and yeah two tied uh alissa and amanda tied they only got one wrong each uh between these two um Actually, they tied two.
00:56:57
Speaker
You got to say it out loud. Say the number.
00:57:01
Speaker
They both got them wrong. So you got three right. So that's not bad for the Florida or not Florida game. Here's the thing. You could have got them all wrong, but you didn't. So in my eyes, you win.
00:57:16
Speaker
Yes. Awesome. possible Thank you guys. Do I get a Florida vacation? Absolutely, no. If you pay for it, you get one. No, you you got the decals. That's what you want.

When these albums drop, when these songs drop, these guys don't make millions and millions of dollars. but they could as long as we, you know, put the word out, make sure that everybody's following, listening.
00:59:38
Speaker
If you like- Ronnie always says, Ronnie always says that your share could be the share that gets us there. So we appreciate every share, every follow, every person who supports us along this journey. i mean, we can't say thank you enough to all those people who share and like and support.
00:59:52
Speaker
that's That's why we do this. and we don't do this podcast for Mark and myself. Like nobody wants to look at us, dude. But we do this for the talent. We do this like this is a we do a variety show because we want to showcase what you guys have going on. The the the hard times, the good times, all of it that you guys have went through to get to this point in your lives where you're at.
01:00:17
Speaker
And if we can gain if we can help you gain one to ten followers 20 or 30 thousands.
01:00:25

01:01:16
Speaker
I just know music, music is

Subjectivity in Music and Where to Find Matt's Work

01:01:18
Speaker
subjective. You're not gonna you're not gonna make a fan out of every person. That is right. It's it's it's subjective. You you know, you're not gonna please everybody. But um that's why we say that's what that's what the the next button is for. You know, I'm not forcing you to listen. Ronnie's not forcing you to listen. We want you to listen. We want you to want to listen to too.
01:01:37
Speaker
Yeah, guys, and and download the music down, download, downloads download. What the fuck is wrong with me? Download and the music to your Spotify. I think you guys are on Apple Music. I heart right you're on all of them, all the straight. All of them right now. Spotify, YouTube. The videos are on YouTube.

There's so many Matt James that make music. When I got Black Sheep playing the radio for the first time, it's one of the things the guy said. He was like, lots of Matt James to make music out there. So I threw the X in there. It's kind of something fun. So on platforms, it's Matt X James, as far as like you know Spotify, YouTube, that kind of stuff.
01:02:41
Speaker
um Coming up, we've got the the show this Saturday in Litchfield, Illinois at the Moose Lodge with Ronnie and KJ. um We got the big one um May 16th for Keefy Canna Fest. 01:03:22
Speaker
That's good. That's good. a
01:03:25
Speaker
That is fantastic. And then any any new irons in the fire? Are we bringing anybody on to an album or we talking about adding new stuff?
01:03:38
Speaker
Yeah, um really just just trying to get in the business side of things down just because we're getting more and more attention there and more and more demand. So making sure we're buttoning up some of that. Ronnie's been working on that real hard. um And then, you know, just just the songs, the new songs coming out. I got the All In with Molly Seton. If you haven't heard about Molly, look Molly up. She's one of the best live artists you can come across.
01:04:02
Speaker
We put her on a song as her first one in the studio and she did an amazing job. um Yeah, I've got we've got a lot of just so many things in the fire right now. I keep you here all night between me and Ronnie and KJ and Phil over there and and and John. We were all we're all busy trying trying to give them just one after another here. But right now we're pushing pushing that one foot in the grave, baby.
01:04:24
Speaker
It's a fantastic song. It really is. Guys, if you know the song, go listen to One Foot in the Grave. Once you listen to that, go listen to Fire and Rain. That is my second favorite song from Ronnie.
01:04:35
Speaker
um he the Listen, the man... ahead, sorry. go ahead sorry Oh, no, no. He's got new stuff coming too that's about to drop and we're super excited about it.
01:04:46
Speaker
Mark's already trying to fucking hijack it. Me and Ronnie got one called ah Pull the Pin. Now when we talk about the rap stuff, it's like, you know, we still we still love to do it. It's just not our main focus anymore, right? But every once in a while, we're going to dip in. And just ah just like Alex said, the bars, we just got to show you we still can if we want to, you know? But we got this song called Pull the Pin that's just nasty.
01:05:08
Speaker
It's just nasty. You know, i you guys are like a lot. going Hold up. We're going to be playing black sheep. So don't worry. Yeah. And then yeah i do got to ask this question. um If somebody wants to book you guys, how can they do that?

I can message them to you as well. Yeah, it's easy. It would probably be easier that way, but I'll try to get something. like i don't want to lock anything down in stone, but let me reach out to my people as far as who I know.
01:06:15
Speaker
And let me see if I can just try to help you guys, because I would love to have you guys here. Absolutely. That'd be awesome. yeah I did talk to Ronnie about that, too, and he said he would love to come to Florida. The big thing was is the the travel. Are you guys going to travel and stay?
01:06:28
Speaker
Are you going to travel and go? and he said, listen, man, we've done, you know, the 14-hour drives and stuff. It don't bother him. I'm like... Yeah, but I don't think we're going to want to do that after this. Look, look i anytime you can get some Illinois boys out of here and take us to Florida, we're yeah we're on it, man. All we see is cornfields and stuff out here.
01:06:50
Speaker
It's about a million and a half degrees, though. I'll just lose a little weight. I can use it. No big deal. And then you're going to need something sour to put on your body because these mosquitoes we got around here will carry you awake.
01:07:04
Speaker
<unk> not smell he's telling good now It's
01:07:10
Speaker
Mark's got a Nats.
01:07:14
Speaker
We got these things out here that are called no-see-ums. You guys got those in Illinois? well i don't know. It's literally an invisible bug. an invisible visiblee bug it's ah It's called a no-see-um for a reason. you know You don't ever see it. That bitch bites you and you're looking down like, what the fuck?
01:07:33
Speaker
what just gotta be Yeah. yeah Anyway, yes. So we I'll I'll shoot a email over to some folks that I know and see what they have planned and stuff like that.
01:07:50
Speaker
It's a mud park. They do probably they do a long weekend. So they'll do like a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. think Friday and Saturday is when they do their shows.
01:08:02
Speaker
Sunday is the end day. That's the die-down day and stuff like that. so You guys have seen the Wolfpack video, right? Yeah. I have not. You got to check that one out. That one we did with the Shocker group out in Virginia um with all the ATVs and four-wheelers. Those guys are like the Mud Park crew.
01:08:21
Speaker
um and I've been talking with them guys, too, about possibly getting out to like you know Pikes Off-Road or something like that to get us kind of involved in some of the stuff locally in Missouri. Yeah. Yeah, just trying to get our foot in the door somewhere there, too, because I think that's where we could really like just tear the house down in a place like that. Oh, yeah.
01:08:40
Speaker
Oh, yeah. I think so, too. I think I think because here's the thing. People can still be out riding and hear the music and they're going to come. Hang out, they're going damn, I really like that. You know, let's go check that out.
01:08:52
Speaker
Right. so Yeah, especially when Wolfpack was all you know centered around that lifestyle, that that mud part, just getting muddy got there with your with your friends and family, just having a good time.
01:09:03
Speaker
Yeah, I know the song. I know. Where am I? Yeah, I know my song. I know the song, but I didn't see the video. You got to check the video off for that one. That was I still with me, Ronnie boss, say the same thing that was still the most fun that we've ever had on I mean, we had like there's like 100 people out there. It was crazy. It was ah it was it was it was a good time.
01:09:24
Speaker
OK. Well, listen, Matt, we've asked you for an hour of your time. You went over your hour. I hope we did keep you up. No, you're good. Yeah, that's right. That's right. no that's me like i read something bro ah that's how you go night That's because you're old.
01:09:42
Speaker
Shut up. mar Yeah. more ah Listen, we wish you a ton of success. We are going to play at the end of this very end of the show. We are going to play what song, Mark?
01:09:54
Speaker
Black Sheep. Black Sheep. um Do you want to tell everybody about Black Sheep real quick? Hold on. Stick around for when after it ends, please.
01:10:05
Speaker
And but yeah you cannot talk about Black Sheep now. Yeah. So Black Sheep was one of my funnest songs I ever wrote. It's kind of a toxic song. if you listen to the lyrics, it's a little bit toxic. um But I'll tell you a funny little story about how the the chorus kind of came together. I originally wrote that song with no intentions of putting KJ on there.
01:10:26
Speaker
um There's an original chorus out there with just me. You guys will never hear it unless unless John Smith decides to prank me someday and put it out there. um But so we brought KJ in just do some backup vocals on the chorus, right?
01:10:38
Speaker
And then so I go in the studio. At first, she was a little nervous doing it. But when we went in there, I put a camera on her face and she lit it up and just like smashed the chorus, brought it to life. I walked back in the studio and the first thing John says to me is, you just lost your chorus. I was like, I know, i know.
01:10:53
Speaker
Whatever. You know, and and you got to do what's best for the song. That's what we always say, whatever best for the song. um And that was what was best for the song. um So, yeah, here's Black Sheet featuring K.J. McGuire and myself, Maddox James.
01:11:07
Speaker
All right, let's play it.
01:11:28
Speaker
There's nothing left that I can say You're already out that door You tell me that you're sick of games Then why do you come back for some more?
01:11:45
Speaker
I will only bring you I thought you would've learned by now There's nothing left for us to change I'm gon' shut that shit down Cause baby I'm a black sheep I've been going way too hard There's killers all around me
01:12:12
Speaker
I'm just tryna play my part Cause baby I'm a black sheep I've been going way too hard There's killers all around me I'm just tryna play my part
01:12:48
Speaker
I'm gonna put it on the line Work you like it's our first time There's nothing for me you can hide It's something see deep down inside Maybe we should let this thing go
01:13:16
Speaker
Take a deep breath and let go Cause baby I'm a black sheep I've been going way too hard There's killers all around me I'm just trying to play my part Cause baby I'm a black sheep
01:13:40
Speaker
I've been going way too hard There's kids all around me I'm just trying to play my part
