to the Malted Minis, brought to you by the Malting Hour. I am one of your hosts, Tony Golic, joined always with Brandon Winninger. Brandon, how are you? Good. How are you? Good, man. You're getting ready to go on a little trippy poo, huh? Yeah. Nice. Yep.

Family and Birthday Anecdotes

00:00:40
Speaker
We're lucky enough to have our in-laws staying at the house, taking care of the, as my father-in-law called them, the half-dad. Oh, jeez. Poor cats. There they are.
00:00:54
Speaker
I'm off cat duty this week. I like it. Yeah. Um, yeah, we're going on a little vacation and, um, yeah, God bless them for coming in. That's awesome. And they were here last weekend. We had, uh, my son's spent a birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese. And then, um, they had to take care of some family stuff in Columbus, Ohio. They drove down and then came back today. Wow.

Tasting and Reviewing Mars Short Spear

00:01:20
Speaker
uh for benjamin's actual birthday yeah which we just celebrated yeah we did just celebrate now we're going to celebrate one more time without him yay we're drinking a beer and we are drinking mars short spear i've not had this before neither have i and uh for those you don't know short spear is a dark lager this one is 5.6 alcohol by volume um if i'm not this is brought to us wasn't it we didn't yeah yeah yeah
00:01:47
Speaker
Fantastic. Yeah, so here we go. Thanks David for leaving this here. I took it. It's it's breaking of traditional dark lager and It's it's tasty. Yeah,

Admiration for Mars Brewery

00:02:03
Speaker
it's really good. It's not It's not too Multi it gets enough of that roasting us that yeah, you expect in a short spear not like
00:02:16
Speaker
Not like super coffee roasty, almost like the roastiness you get in a porter. Yeah. And there's still that little bit of fruitiness that you get in a lager, which is nice because I just had an old Irving lager. It's nice to go to this after that. I kind of feel like I woke up my palate for a lager. And then to have this, it complements what I just drank. So yeah, this is really good. Short spears are fantastic.
00:02:37
Speaker
Yeah, and again, I don't know the gamut of beers that Mars runs, but at this point, we've had, in the past couple months, we've had several of them.
00:02:51
Speaker
And I don't I've not had a bad Mars beer. I don't think I've had a bad Mars beer. No, there's not one that I haven't liked. But I don't know, man, the Shores beer might be might be one of my favorites. Yeah, creeping up on a favorite. Well, as you guys know, the dark lagers, what me realize, I actually do like lagers. So this is right in my wheelhouse, man. Very,

Brewing Ambitions

00:03:12
Speaker
very happy to have this.
00:03:13
Speaker
It does really well with presenting everything that a dark lager should. Yeah. And it's, and I say this a lot, but it's easy drinking. It's super smooth. We choose a lot of easy drinking beers, even though we're not planning on it. Yeah, but it's super smooth. Like those big barely aged out. Sorry.
00:03:33
Speaker
Which is crazy because some of the ones are like super easy drinking and it's like Why you like this man the microphone Last one microphone was really good. Was that the sweet drums? I think so. Yeah, I'm sorry. I interrupt you in your drums or drums again I mean we're on the same path. So Yeah, it's
00:03:57
Speaker
It's a quite enjoyable beer. Um, I don't know if this is, um, like we haven't done enough research. I don't know if this is like a seasonal release or whatever, but fantastic. Yeah. I need to remember to buy shores beers, um, because they're delicious. Like I've seen them. I'm always like, it's normally when I see them, I'm like on an IPA kick and I don't end up grabbing them and.

Rating the Mars Short Spear

00:04:23
Speaker
Having this right now makes me regret not grabbing them more often. Yeah, and I do want to add this. And again, I don't think either of us have ever done this style, but like trying to brew a dark lager, like we talk about it a lot and then life gets in the way. Neither of us have brewed for a while, but like.
00:04:43
Speaker
getting there um i'm getting the itch we've got some time coming up this summer too that like i just i would love to brew something and i've never done a dark lager like i think that's something maybe i'll start looking into writing a recipe and like seeing what comes up of it i like that i think i'm gonna focus on doing a juicy pale ale when it comes time for me to brew because i like the pale ale but i also want to make it juicy how juicy and i got creepy real fast oh boy
00:05:13
Speaker
We have a woke awakened Aggie. Yeah, hi Aggie. Well Brandon, how many, I know it's Schwartz beer, but how many Schwartz, like may the Schwartz be with you, are you gonna give this?
00:05:26
Speaker
I'm going to do a solid four. Yeah, I'm with you. I'm doing a four as well. Maybe like a three, eight, three, nine. So I will say this, the roastiness, there's a little bitterness in the back end that I don't particularly care for, but it's not super strong. So that's the only reason why I'm a little bit under a four. Aggie, we're almost done recording, I promise.

Plans for Brewery Visits

00:05:46
Speaker
Yeah, well done Mars. Wow, this has been the, we've had a lot of Mars beers this year. We have. I'm happy about that because they make great beers and looking forward to finally going to the brewery to do an interview hopefully sometime soon. I'm gonna do some homework while you're on vacation. Okay.
00:06:06
Speaker
and see what I can get going for it. So it's been a while since we visited a place to go talk to anybody. Yeah. Like we've kind of been homebodies doing, which is fine. I like doing this, but I want to get back out there, man. I want to hit the streets again. I want to get out there and talk to the people, meet the people. I get a lot of people that can visit us, but yeah, like going to the home base is always fun.
