Packing for a runDisney race weekend can be overwhelming, especially when we’re dealing with Florida's unpredictable weather. In this episode, we're sharing our personal runDisney packing lists as we count down the final two weeks to the Walt Disney World Marathon.

We break down everything we bring:

  • Our Essential Race Gear: Why we always pack extra socks and themed race shirts, and the reason we bring multiple pairs of running shoes
  • Our 'In Case of Emergency' Items: How we stay warm in the corrals using fleece blankets, Mylar and ponchos
  • Our Nutrition & Hydration: How we map out our fuel—from Morton gels to the exact number of gummy bears we count out for 26.2 miles
  • Our Recovery Tools: What we keep in our resort room to help us bounce back

Plus we're chatting for a few minutes about tapering... how we handle the 'taper crazies' and why we believe resting is just as vital before a race as the miles we’ve already put in. Whether you’re navigating your first 10K or taking on the Dopey Challenge, we’ve put together this practical episode based on our runDisney race experience to help you arrive confident and ready to run!

everyone, welcome to the One More Run podcast. I'm AJ, this is Erica, and if you're listening to this on release day, Merry Christmas. It's Christmas Eve. Uh, we, we don't skip episodes. It doesn't matter. That's right. Big time holiday. Right. We're still going to get this thing out for you. That's right. Uh, I don't know who's going to listen to it on Christmas Eve. Uh, maybe someone driving to their in-laws or something. Or someone avoiding, avoiding their in-laws.
00:00:44
Speaker
How about that? Oh yeah. I got it. have to go for a run. Right. Yeah. I would never do that. Oh my gosh. Your in-laws listen to this podcast. Okay. I didn't mean it.
00:00:55
Speaker
ah Although my in-laws helped supply some of the Christmas decor. Yes, they did. That have going on here on the on the video version.

Podcast's Aim for Run Disney Race Weekends

00:01:03
Speaker
Yeah. So if you're new here to our podcast, we we like to share tips and tricks for Run Disney Race Weekends, right? It's supposed to be fun.
00:01:12
Speaker
It's not supposed to be stressful. And that's our whole goal here is to share what we've learned, the experiences we've had. And that doesn't mean you have to take our advice necessarily, but we're just sharing, hey, this has worked for us. We did not think this worked very well. And hopefully you can take that, apply it to your race weekend and have a good one. And if you're having fun and and not stressed out, that's a win for us.

Listener Feedback and Motivation

00:01:33
Speaker
Erica, we read reviews at the top of each episode yeah and these are so encouraging. Like they just, I can't even tell y'all. We say that, you know, it's not about us. It's really about you, but like hearing your stories and the feedback, gosh, it's so good. So would you mind reading a recent review? Yeah. Yes, absolutely. Today's review comes from Star Vibe. She says, I've been binging this podcast as I prepare for my first ever race, the full Walt Disney World Marathon in January. AJ and Erica have been so helpful and motivating as I navigate a world I know very little about.
00:02:04
Speaker
From nutrition, recommendations, and corral information and more, I feel as prepared as possible going into my first ever major race. And I even decided to sign up for a half marathon this weekend too. If I'm going to run 13 miles in my training, I might as well get a medal.
00:02:20
Speaker
Thanks again, AJ and Erica, and I will see you on the course in January. Happy training from Mary. Awesome. Mary, that was so sweet. And we are so excited to meet you and so excited for your marathon.

Acknowledging Collaborations and Creating Top 10 Lists

00:02:31
Speaker
um While we're doing some shout outs, just want to say a huge big thank you to the Rise and Run gang for joining us last week. It was so fun to visit with them. It was. it was Imagine having all the Rise and Run gang looking directly at you for an hour. Yes.
00:02:47
Speaker
and literally engaging you, not like one person or whatever, you know what I mean? Like literally we had their captive. And I mean, they, we, I joked about on podcast. They're celebrities to me. They are like big time. I've been listening to them for so long. Right. Right. Right. But just, I mean, to have, and I don't even know, like, I really, I feel like I could retire at this point in our podcasting career because just to have the opportunity to talk to them and they are normal people and they say that and whatever, but gosh, what a pleasure and a joy. It was so much fun to have them on.
00:03:14
Speaker
Oh, was so much fun. If you haven't heard last week's episode, go listen to it. We did some would you rathers then we created the top 10 things you should do at a run Disney race. But I did want to clarify something on that. Yeah. We called it like the top 10 things you must do or whatever. want to clarify, you don't have to do all those 10 things to have a great race weekend, right? You don't even have to do any of them. Right. If, if like do it your, your way, we're again, providing tips, we're providing some suggestions like, Hey, we really do think that having a post race meal celebration is a great thing to do. We do love, you know, getting character photos, but if you don't want to do it, you can't do it for whatever reason. That doesn't mean your race weekends ruined. right right like like whatever you can do want to do all that stuff if you just don't even like disney characters that's fine right you don't have to stop for a photo just because we said it or the rise and run guys you know just because they said it so make it your race right like like take these tips take these these this advice do with it whatever you want yeah no judgment whatsoever just because you see other people doing it or whatever does not mean you have to right So all that to say, yes, go listen to our episode because you might get some great advice on things you might want

Comparing Packing Lists for Run Disney

00:04:24
Speaker
to do. If you don't do them or you can't, that doesn't mean you can't have a great race experience. That's right. Yeah. Okay. Awesome. Let's move on to today's topic. We're going to share, and I'm interested to see how this goes because you've got a packing list that you keep on your phone. I've got a packing list that I keep on my phone. And I thought we could just like compare. Yeah. Right. We'll just talk through, hey, here's what you should pack based off our experiences.
00:04:46
Speaker
Don't forget to bring this thing. A real obvious one is you should bring yeah some shoes. You know, like that's a really good obvious one. There might be a few items in here that you either didn't ever think to bring or you're like, oh, shoot, that's right. I did want to bring that. i meant to and I forgot to put it in my bag. Right. Right. So if you're packing now, some people are already packing for race weekend. You know what I mean? we're How far? We're two weeks out or so yeah from a marathon weekend. Yeah. Some people are already packing and that's totally cool, right? We've got a pile that started right up up in the- i actually have like a special like um hanging rack thing for my Red Disney clothes and outfits. And so I've started putting some- Correct. Potential race weekend

Essential Items for Race Weekends

00:05:26
Speaker
outfits there. Yeah. Exactly. yeah So if you're packing, we hope this list helps, right? It might be a little clunky because Erica and I's lists are probably very similar. There might be some things that she packs that I don't, might be some things I pack that you don't. So I've got my list on my phone. yeah I was just going to pull it up and literally we can just kind of compare and contrast and hopefully it's helpful. Sounds good. How do you want to start, Erica? I don't mind if you start. We can um ah kind of go by category. I've got um like clothing items, nutrition items. I've got the in case of emergency items. Like how do you want it? You want to start with clothing? It seems natural to start there. Yeah, let's start with clothing. You can start and then I'll add in some things. I feel like we're going to have similar answers and then I may have a few like girly things.
00:06:06
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. um Also, this is like my run Disney list. Right. There's a few like Disney things whatever, but this isn't like um toothbrush or Right. Or underwear. Yes. Like that stuff that I feel like if you're going on a trip, should that. Hopefully you remember to pack that. And if you don't, well, I don't know how you get anywhere. So um although I have forgotten my toothbrush before, I shouldn't have said that. and yeah I'll probably forget it on this trip. Okay. So, um, these are, these are running specific things. I've got, um, my race shirt and my race shorts, right? Those are important. And of course they're always for us. They're always themed. Right. Um, so I've got those. They're already set out upstairs, socks and shoes, like, like the the basics of what I have to wear no matter what. Yep. Um, do you have those on your list? I do. um I would add that I always pack an extra pair of running shoes, which I know you do as well.
00:06:52
Speaker
I do. Yeah. um Especially if you're doing a challenge for the weekend. um You know, if it rains, oh you want to make sure you have an extra pair shoes. Also, I don't like to wear my running shoes to the parks. Like, I don't mean, I typically never wear running shoes to walk, but bring an extra pair.
00:07:09
Speaker
Yeah. I might be getting ahead of us. I bring two, even though we're doing one race this weekend, and I'm bringing two running shoes, casual shoes to just walk in and my recovery shoes. So I'm technically bringing four. Yes. Might even have my flip-flops for the pool. I don't know what the weather's going to be like. So I do have pack a lot of shoes. Yes, I do as well. um The socks, obviously this depends on your number of races. So if you're running four races, you're obviously going to bring four shirts, four shorts, four whatever. But like um We're doing the marathon. I'm bringing two pairs of running socks, right not just in case of emergency, but in case of emergency while I'm running, like I will have them in my backpack yes in case, and we have changed out socks before. So we have on my list right here, I have running socks slash extra pair for marathon. That's correct. Um, I, this might seem like a, uh, like an extra item or whatever, but I bring the sleeves, you know, that like the compression sleeves or whatever to stay warm in the corral. Um, I, I have that on my clothing list because I almost always use them on these winter races. Even if it's kind of warm just cause I, or yeah, cause I, I always have it. And then I have my sunglasses on my, on that list. Does that count as clothing?
00:08:17
Speaker
Oh yeah, for sure. Yeah. Okay. You have, you have sunglasses on your list. I'm just going on my list. I have bib boards to attach my, um my, yeah yes. And I always bring some extra ones in case like the little back snap part gets lost somewhere. Yeah. So I always bring extras, but yes.
00:08:32
Speaker
Yep. We've talked a lot about bib boards. If you forget that, they do have safety pins there and you will have a frustrating time doing that. So I have bib boards. In my clothing section, I also have my hydration belt. Yes.
00:08:46
Speaker
Okay. And so I bring a couple of those. I have one that's just a belt and it goes under my shirt and it could carry couple of gels in my phone. Right. Like it doesn't carry a lot. It's usually for a half marathon distance for me personally. But I also am going to bring my backpack. We've talked about the Fitly brand. yeah I will be bringing that one because of the marathon distance. I will want to carry obviously a lot more nutrition, but I also have my GoPro camera.
00:09:11
Speaker
Yeah. You know, and then I like being able to put my phone in there on that long distance. So it's not in my pocket um or in my zipper pocket. So I have Fitly backpack on my on my clothing list. Is that technically clothing? Yeah. It's on my clothing list as well. Yeah. Okay. Is it, that's my whole list for what to wear. That's not like emergency stuff. i have a different list of like, if it's raining list, right? But do you have anything? Okay. you have anything else in your clothing list? Yes. So I have some girl things. Um, so I also am going to make sure I pack my coordinating ears or headband depending on which one I'm going to wear. Also, i usually have some sort of themed earrings that goes with my outfit. ok
00:09:47
Speaker
Okay. always wear makeup when I run. We've talked about that. But if there's like a specific lip color. So like this year we're doing Sorcerer Mickey. So I'm going to wear a red lips. So I'm going to make sure I pack my red lipstick. um Some other stuff that I want to make sure that I pack.
00:10:03
Speaker
specifically for my costume are hair related things okay um this is gonna sound funny but i actually put an extra elastic in my hair like in my ponytail i don't remember what race it was now but a couple of years back my ponytail holder actually broke while i was running oh which is like a terrible thing to happen for a girl because i can't not wear i can't run with my hair down like it pisses me out but um but yeah it actually snapped while i was running so Fortunately, someone else on the course had an extra one and just like handed it to me. But now i it seems kind of redundant. But I like put my hair in a ponytail and then I put another scrunchie around it, like another elastic, just in case the first one breaks. and So I pack extra hair things. I have a good would you rather now. Would you rather yeah your hair tie broken, you don't have a backup or you get a hole in your sock on the big toe.
00:10:55
Speaker
A hole in the sock. I'll just pull over and rip the whole thing open. Yeah. The hair is that important? Yeah. Well, especially because like, you know, most of us girls have like used our wax stick or our hairspray or our gel. So your ponytail is like, if your elastic broke, your ponytail is like hanging. Like it would look so ridiculous. I officially, i don't don't even answer it here because I'm assuming all the girls listening know what a wax stick is. I don't even know. That's actually, it's on my packing list. And so a wax stick is just like, ah it looks, almost looks like a deodorant stick and you like, but it's made of hair wax. You don't have to explain it. No, I'm going to explain it now. what it is And then you just, you just rub it on your head and it helps tame your flyaways. Gross.
00:11:39
Speaker
It's, it's actually, it says wax stick on my packing list because it's that important. All right. Yes. That's pretty much it for things to wear clothing. Yes. Okay. Perfect. Um, you want to do nutrition or I've got ah an in case of emergency.

Packing for Weather Changes

00:11:54
Speaker
Yeah. Let's do a case of emergency.
00:11:56
Speaker
All right. I put a baseball cap. Actually, I went on the first. I'll go first anyway. Okay. I put a baseball cap. Yeah. Um, and that's from experience. If it's going rain, I want to have it. And I actually prefer running in a baseball cap now. So I have that. I think you do a visor usually, or what do you do a cap? What do you do?
00:12:12
Speaker
Yeah, either one, a baseball cap or a visor. Something to put on head if it's going for sure you want Yeah. Okay, have Band-Aids. I sunscreen. That probably shouldn't be an emergency. That should probably be able to bring it anyway. Correct. Shoot. Yeah, you're on the course for a long time. And especially if you start in like a further back corral, you're going to be in the sun. So even if it's cold... I remember the first marathon we did, we were like, wow, we're kind of sunburned. Half marathon for sure. By the time you're heading home from the Magic Kingdom, you're looking straight into the sun, which is why you need those sunglasses and sunscreen. I don't know why it's on an emergency It should probably just be on the list. It should be on the list, yes.
00:12:47
Speaker
Um, I have hot hands. I'm sure you do too. I sure do. I have a fleece blanket and we've done this where we brought, um, like we bought the five or $8 version from Walmart and wrapped up in it in the corral and then we toss it or whatever. yes So I have, I have a you know, emergency blanket like that. I bring my gloves, my running gloves right in case it's going to be, ah my temperature threshold is 45. So 45 and up, I don't bring them to the race itself. 45 and under, I'm bringing them. They're in my backpack if it's if it's that cold. Totally. You have that on your list? Yeah, I have everything that you mentioned so far. going to add that I always bring like a pair of leggings that could coordinate with my outfit. I don't prefer to wear leggings with my dress, but if it's ph freezing, I have a pair that I have leggings on my list for sure. And the same threshold applies. If it's never going to get above 45 on the race, I'm wearing them. right if it If it's going to start at 45 and get up to 55, I don't want to sweat in those things, but I do have them just in case. yeah i bring I have a fleece headband thing. I bring that.
00:13:50
Speaker
i Typically don't end up using it or whatever. My thermal undershirt, we've talked about that long sleeve thermal shirt. and There's always actually usually a couple depending on the color, whatever i in in the bag. So I'll have that. I bring my rain jacket. yep i never have I've never brought it to the run Disney race course. I've trained with it a million times. okay And for some reason, I just think like race day, i'm like, I'll be fine. And then it's rained every time. right all the marathons yes but i don't know should i this is a serious question should i start bringing it to the course because it's you know it's kind of bulky like to it's even though it's got the strap where you can just put it on around your waist or whatever something about that it's like it seems like a a big wood just in case item to bring what do you think i would be more concerned about the photos like i don't want it in the photo photos got it yeah yeah tough it out
00:14:40
Speaker
yeah I don't know. I mean, we've run in rain that we've run in torrential downpour that was not even on the forecast, like even the hour before. If you really don't want to get wet in your, um I would say like your core, then I would say maybe if you have one, bring it. yeah For me, I think I'm okay getting wet up top. Where I don't want to get wet is on my feet. Yeah, on your socks. But what are you going to do about that? Yeah.
00:15:04
Speaker
Like you're going to, like those are getting wet. yeah So I think that's why I don't end up actually bringing the jacket. right I think maybe what might be different is if it, and it hasn't happened to us yet. If it was rain in the forecast, like we left our hotel and it was already raining and it was never going to stop. Yeah.
00:15:20
Speaker
Yeah, until 12 o'clock. Right. And not like the kind of downpour like in 2024 when they canceled part of the half. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about like if it was just going to be raining. Yeah. And you were never going to get relief. I might actually wear the jacket. Yeah.
00:15:34
Speaker
Because then you're, i mean. Totally. I would. I would for sure. Okay. All right. Yeah. Mylar is on my list. Yep. That's the tinfoil stuff to keep your body heat in, in the corral. Don't wear that across the start line. Correct. Um, I have on here and I have used them, uh, the plastic poncho. Yeah. I knew you were going to that. Yeah. And I've worn it. Yeah. You know, and it, it's, you know what? It does help too. It's that clear, you know, cheap ones that you get on Amazon. It helps cut the wind down too. Right. While you're waiting in the corral. So,
00:16:02
Speaker
Last year's half before on marathon weekend, I had my fleece blanket with the Mylar and the plastic bag over me because it was raining. Yeah. Right? Yeah. And I was so i was staying as dry as as possible. Yeah.
00:16:15
Speaker
I don't know why I have extra running socks in my case of emergency because I already talked about that. Right. So apparently I'm bringing a lot of socks. Yeah. Okay. Do you have anything in your ICE e that I did not add um You know, my new favorite is my fleecy bathrobe, which you're embarrassed to be seen with me wearing it. Yes, you're a corralled. But if it's freezing, I'm going to wear it because it keeps me so dang warm. You do look happy.
00:16:40
Speaker
I am very happy. And if I'm waiting, I'd rather be warm. um I won't wear it over the start line, but I'll wear it in the corral. Okay. Let's see. Oh, I was just going to add that ah we did buy some of the mylars this year for our upcoming races that have the hood on them. So if it's raining, it kind of doubles as a raincoat slash like mylar, but for the corral.
00:17:03
Speaker
You already said this, but I put not for the race, but just for the, like if we're doing the park or you know, the days before it. I know everyone has said this a billion times, but like you just don't know what the weather is going to be like in Florida. Like yeah it can be freezing and you're, you know, bundled up wearing five different layers then the next day it's like you're wearing shorts. So I like to come prepared for all different types of weather. So I will bring fleece line leggings and those thermal shorts that you were talking about to throw under like other clothes for going to the park or whatever. So that's just a general packing thing that I like to bring.
00:17:37
Speaker
Perfect. um All right. The category I have still is nutrition, which we need to talk about. I have recovery items as yeah well. Let's go recovery items since we're kind of talking clothes and things like that.

Post-Race Recovery Essentials

00:17:48
Speaker
Recovery items. I have four items on my list. I have the Hyper Ice compression boots. yeahp Hyper Ice is the brand name. So we ended up investing in some of those. If you didn't you don't have those, that's fine. You can go to the expo. That's right. And they use them there. yeah um It's just real convenient for you and I because- We have them in the hotel room, right resort room, and you can use them. I can use them while we watch Mickey cartoons.
00:18:12
Speaker
At least I'm watching Mickey cartoons. um I have that. I have for recovery, we have a travel size um massage gun thing. yeah And so I'll bring that, like, especially if I'm like trying to like target something that isn't feeling so great.
00:18:27
Speaker
I bring my recovery slides. Mm-hmm. Those things are so comfy. They are. um And then i bring my swimsuit. I put that under recovery because I don't like swimming in the pool Right. But I will, after the marathon, get in and just cool the muscles down or go to the hot tub. Yeah. You know, and ah and I got to have my swimsuit.
00:18:47
Speaker
That's right. Okay. Anything else in your recovery section? Yeah. um for No, no, no. I have everything that you had, but I'm just going to add for immediately following the race, I like to bring a protein shake um and my recovery slides are in the gear check bag. Yes. So I put those there.
00:19:04
Speaker
So everything you just mentioned, I am also adding a foam roller and a lacrosse ball yeah um yeah to help. And then something that I really love, which we talked about on our, like the episode where we did all of our gear that we use or whatever. So if you got the list or you go back and listen, do you know what episode number that is? I don't. Off the top of my head, I don't. I could look while you're talking.
00:19:23
Speaker
Okay. Well, anyway, that you find the episode that talks about all of our favorite things. There are some Dr. Scholl's recovery foot mask, I think is what it's called, which is a bizarre name because it's, it's not a mask. It's like a tinfoil bag that you put over your feet and it has like magnesium and whatever magical healing powers. And so I like to wear those. um You put them on your feet for like 20 minutes or something after the races. I like to use those. So those are something else that I would add to the recovery list. Episode nine, at least my quick search tells me that episode nine is, uh, the one where we talk about all the gear we use right now. yes We're talking about what we pack, but we're not justifying why or, or why we use that specific brand of thing or whatever. We're just talking about the fact that we pack it. So if you care, I know, I mean, we're talking, you know, ninth inning here, you know, right before the race, but if you care to know the things that we run in and use and what those recovery boots are and all that, whatever, then i it's episode nine. that was a I feel like that would be a really helpful episode for somebody that was new to running or gear or whatnot. A hundred percent. Okay. Anything else in your recovery section? No, I think everything you mentioned.
00:20:32
Speaker
Perfect.

Planning Race Nutrition

00:20:33
Speaker
Nutrition. This, I feel like, is going to be specific. You should know your nutrition at this point. For sure. If you're trying something new at this point, um I'm not going to say you're wrong, but I'm going to say ah ah don't do it. Good luck. Yeah, I'm not sure what to say. You should have tried on your long runs what gels, what waffles, what hydration works for you, right? right So um here's, I can list out the ones that i that i that I use or whatever. And then I would just say this, like I do my math
00:21:07
Speaker
at home right for when, depending on every race, I set it out for each race that we're doing this week at this marathon, we can we're only do on the one race, which makes it easier. But I literally map out and I set it on the, on the bed.
00:21:18
Speaker
Right. And I'm like, okay, this waffle is 30 minutes into the race. This bar is an hour into the race. This waffle is an hour and a half in there. This, you know what mean? And I set it up and then I count out my gummy bears. Correct. Does that make sense? Oh yeah. So I'm not going to tell you how much to bring up, but I'm telling you that I do lay it all out like that. I bring, I'm going to use the Morton gels. I like the Morton gels. I use the Honey Stinger waffles and I split those in half and i use it every 30 minutes or whatever. And I, yeah, I don't want to get too detailed on that. I do either a gummy bear or
00:21:51
Speaker
a um Nerd cluster. Nerd cluster. Every mile. So there will be, I'm bringing a box of them, but I will set, you know, put a little baggie of 26 of those. Yeah. Right. So I will do those every mile. i have my electrolytes whatever that I put in, you know, in my ah my shaker bottle thing or whatever. And then you mentioned the post-race protein drink. That's where I have it here. And the Morton drink mix for before the race. yeah Gosh, there's a lot of stuff here.
00:22:17
Speaker
There is, yeah. I also like the Morton solids. So apparently I'm going to have that. And that's it. Oh, the salt stick tabs. That was a long list. Perfect. But the reason I'm not spending a ton of time on each one of those is because if you haven't used all those products in your training, now's not the time to figure that out. Right, right. yeah Like maybe adding in the salt stick tabs whatever at this point is okay, but you don't want to like be like oh, he said Morten gel. Let me try that. All of a sudden, right? Yeah. If you are going to try something new, do it ASAP on your next run whatever, make sure it doesn't mess you up.
00:22:49
Speaker
Totally. um Okay. So I pack all that stuff. I bring graham crackers for the hotel room. yeah Like, and you know, that way I have some, some not too heavy carbs, you know, to just have. So I don't know if I did nutrition justice, but that's what I have on my list. Is there any comments you want to add on that?
00:23:06
Speaker
I would just, I'm agreeing with you that I ah pack a predetermined amount of fuel. I plan it out just like you said. I will get a Sharpie and write on like huh the gel packets or whatever. yes So AJ mentioned um using a shaker bottle. Just make sure that you bring one of those in your suitcase. If it's convenient convenient for you to pack, you will definitely use it a bunch leading up. um to the race, whether it's for you know electrolyte mixes or the morning of the race, if you're doing the Morton pre-mix or whatever, all those things are good.
00:23:37
Speaker
um Another thing that I will bring for the week leading up to the race is my circle or some sort of water flavoring because we do not like the way that the Florida water tastes. yes um And then if we drive, I'll also bring some like healthy carbs to carb load while we're there. So Yeah. Those are a few. It's harder to bring when we fly. That's why you said that. sure. Yeah. Yep. Yep. Awesome. Is that all for nutrition? I'm sure that wasn't like as helpful as as as some of the other sections, but we do. I think the big lesson there is we lay it all out. Yeah. And then maybe bring a couple extra just in case. Yep. I have a category and i don't know if you do. I i call it technology.
00:24:16
Speaker
Okay. You do too? I only have two things. Okay. Go ahead. Yeah. yeah Well, for sure, I want to bring my shocks and the charger for that. Yes. um And then we have talked in previous episodes about how hard it is to sleep sometimes at the um resort. And so I will always bring, i have a sleep mask that has headphones built into it. And so I will use that along with a white noise app on my phone. um I'll also bring earplugs sometimes, but yeah but yeah, those are my, those are my only two, my only two tech things. You're the tech one. You bring your watch. That's tech. right Oh, yeah. Yeah, for sure.
00:24:51
Speaker
Yeah. Bring your watch and your watch charger. Yeah. yeahp Yeah. Everything that everything needs a charger. yeah Right. um Let me see on my list. I have that. have my AirPods. um I bring a GoPro style camera, you know, to record stuff with. So i have that and all of its chargers and cards, know, that go in it. Yeah.
00:25:09
Speaker
I don't know. This might be a little too specific, but it's on my list. We have relief bands. Oh, And we use like when we travel, like if we're flying or we're on a cruise ship or something, it's like a motion sickness band thing. I actually wear it probably not on race day, but like getting to and from like the expo or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Because the bus kind of just makes me a little queasy sometimes, right? yeah So if I can just wear something on my wrist that helps with just avoiding feeling queasy, right I'll do it. The reason I don't wear it on race day is because I have enough things to wear. And that's just another piece of, I just don't need that. Yeah. yeah that But I do bring it. And I bring a portable charger on the long marathon race thing. I put it in my backpack. I don't usually run out of phone juice, but that's because I use the GoPro camera or whatever a lot. Right. And so I need to charge that. But because I use that, I'm not using my iPhone camera, right? Because I'm using that. Yeah. So like, I'm sure if I use my phone more, I would want the charger for that. Right. where But it's um one of those small ones, you know, and you have one of those ones that like just sticks on the back of your phone. and You don't carry it on the race though, do you? No. Okay.
00:26:13
Speaker
So that's the technology stuff. Perfect. um I have, is that all your categories? You put your phone away. I have other. thought that was all of our categories. I have other. Oh, you're right. I forgot we skipped that. In my other category, i have like a liquid IV type, whatever, you know, whatever your new, your hydration stuff that was in other. i didn't, I don't know if I said that in the hydration and then the emergency stuff or airborne, whatever version of that is. Right. A week beforehand,
00:26:41
Speaker
I've already started that process of trying to build up my immune system, but I continue that through race weekend ah because you're around a heck of a lot of people yeah and all those kids are touching the handlebars and then licking their hand and touching it again. And then you come walking through and you're standing in line and someone like, And I'm like, get away from me. yeah know so And then I bring some, well, actually you usually bring it and I usually ask for it, but it is on my list. Like ibuprofen or whatever for pain relief. I have that on my other list as well. And then Disney specific things, I put like my magic band, you know, on there. You already said you bring your park ears and stuff like that.

Disney Race Souvenirs and Policy Changes

00:27:21
Speaker
We can't bring these anymore, but we used to bring the run Disney cups, the beer yeah beer be mugs cider mugs or whatever. And we can't bring those anymore yeah because they don't let you refill them on a different race weekend. So now have to, I'm going to remove it right now. Hold on. I'm going to take that off my list.
00:27:37
Speaker
All right. That's off the list. Okay. Anything else you can think of, Erica, that you know? You're shaking your head now? don't think so. Well, that's the things that we plan to pack. Yep. When do you plan to start, Erica? So we're two weeks out. It's Christmas christmas Eve. When do you plan to start putting stuff in a bag and zipping it up?
00:27:55
Speaker
I mean, I will physically put things into a suitcase probably about a week in advance. Yeah. I will. Like I said, I've already started setting out outfits and things. So yeahp yeah. Yeah. Cool. Is it too early to start packing or is it okay to start packing now? Well, depends. I mean, I would probably pack my steam my steamer and like iron everything out when we got to the hotel if I packed this early. Yeah, right. All right. Well, that's our packing list. Perfect. There is one other kind of factor going on right now because we're two weeks out from marathon weekend. And if you're listening to this after marathon weekend, so sorry, apply this information, the packing a list and what i'm we're about to talk about tapering.

Importance of Tapering Before Races

00:28:30
Speaker
So, you know, apply that to whatever your upcoming race is. Right. yeah And so tapering, we're in that mode right now. Totally. Like all, all of our run coaches, if you're running marathon weekend or whatever, would say, yes, now is the time to taper. Erica, what is tapering for someone who's either new to running or they've heard the phrase and they're, they're like, okay, I think I know what that is. How would you describe it? This is when you're going to pull back on running, um the weeks leading up to your race. So if you're doing a marathon, usually it's about three weeks out half, probably about two weeks out. You're not going to stop running completely, but you are going to take it way easier. Yeah, absolutely. I think of it as like, I'm charging my battery, right? So to speak, you know, like, um, yeah these last couple weeks before ah a big race is not the time to like cram for a final. Right. Right. Like you can't now train your way.
00:29:18
Speaker
If you, if you haven't done the the work yet, or you weren't able to complete all the all the miles for whatever reason, now is not the time to try and actually catch up in that. And I think all the run coaches would say that yeah you actually need to charge that battery. Right. Right. And, and start resting and you still have easy runs in there, you know mean? But, but take it, take it a lot easier and you're not doing 20 miles anymore. Right. Yeah. and There is a thing called the taper crazies or maybe the zoomies. Or does that only apply to dogs? The taper crazies is when you kind of like, you're just going stir crazy, yeah right? You just want to get out and run. You just want to get or do something. Like you're just like pacing cabin fever almost, you know? And for a lot of us, it's really cold outside right now. So it's like even worse because you're kind of stuck inside or or it's Christmas and you're stuck with your in-laws, you know? No, that doesn't apply here. Okay. So Erica, what do you do during that time? Like when you're just kind of like got this like, uh, built up tension, right? Your body has been used to all these miles and now you're not doing the miles. Right.
00:30:17
Speaker
What do you do? So I for sure like will do a couple of easy runs. I will do um a lot of walking. I try to walk at least one or two miles a day yeah and then just resting. Resting is good. It's hard sometimes when you're to being active. Now's the time to just put on a Christmas movie. Yeah. You know, and let your body recover. I mean, if you're doing dopey, you just did a ton of miles yeah last weekend, right? Yeah, for sure. Or even marathon or half marathon, whatever it is, if if this is the first time or the first time in a long time that you've trained up to that distance, your body is tired and you might feel like you could keep going, but your body just needs to repair itself. Right. So take a nap.
00:30:56
Speaker
Yeah. Watch a movie. Yeah, totally. You mentioned long run last weekend. Tell me, did you run 20 miles? Is that right? I did. That's what my coach, Clay, coach Clay had me 20 miles. And so it went good. So it was the the case of, I don't want to go. I don't want to go. I don't want to go. I don't want to go. I don't want to go.
00:31:16
Speaker
don't want to go. that. And that's hard. Yeah. When it's cold outside and you got your gloves on and whatever, and you just don't want to go and you, you know, you have to, cause you're like, well, you know, maybe I could do it tomorrow. Well, no, tomorrow I have church and this and this, know what I mean? And you start doing the, you know, I'm like, whoa, but I got to go grocery shopping. So like when you start thinking about, no, this was my day to do this, but you don't want to do it. It's hard to get out, out the door. So I, um, you know, I delayed as long as I could.
00:31:44
Speaker
Anybody need help with homework? Anybody need homework? I don't remember the specific thing, but I just was like, oh, man, you are so delayed right now. yeah. At one point, I woke up and I rolled over and your phone was still on the charger. And I was like, he hasn't left yet? Yeah. I'm like, oh, oh, I better charge my phone before I go. Right. Yeah. You know, because I used it for five minutes. Yeah. It was bad. It was bad. You know what's really bad is I'm a morning runner. Right. It was like I know. It might as well have been like six o'clock for you. know. And so then, of course, being a morning runner, I'm like, oh, it's too late. Yeah. Might as well not even. The day's already ruined. But I got up there. That's good. And I did it.
00:32:24
Speaker
Good. And so Clay had me do 14 miles. at an easy pace. And then the last six miles, he said race pace. Oh, fun. And I thought, well, he didn't say what race pace is. What race are we talking about, Clay? So I'm like just interpreting it. And he's out of the country right now, right? So I couldn't text him or didn't want to text him york because i don't what time it is where he is. And so I'm like, well, this is totally up for interpretation. you know And I split the difference. right yeah what i wanted to do was just keep taking it easy right and then race pace to me felt like you know run at 90 effort you know what i mean i'm gonna split the difference here like i'm gonna go 60 70 effort you know and that's what i did and i made it you know i lasted and um it's hard on the body right like all this we talk about that all the time it took me a long time to recover yeah um it just felt like i ate everything and it just felt like i just kept stretching and kept trying to just get back to whatever and it just I don't know. just It was hard on me. Yeah.
00:33:25
Speaker
But it was fine. I'm having the same issue where I feel like just want to eat everything, but it's because I can't run. I'm sorry. Oh, God. No, it's fine. just That's why I was laughing when you were sharing like this really hard moment and I'm over here like chuckling and you're probably going to be like, why laughing? Because I, too, am wanting eat everything in the house. Well, it's the time of year, too. It's hard.
00:33:48
Speaker
Like it's kind of, it's marathon weekend is a perfect time and it's a terrible time. Yeah. Like, because it's perfect because like you need something to kick off your new year, you know, like all that, the weather's, you know, it's cooler instead of trying to run on the hot months, all that. And in theory, you can use this time to like not overdo it during the holidays on the eating and all that stuff, because i have a marathon in two weeks, so I'm not going to overdo it. yeah And then what do you do? You totally overdo it. Right. Yeah.
00:34:14
Speaker
So that's okay. Everything's going just fine. That's right. Awesome.

Invitation for Listener Interaction

00:34:19
Speaker
Okay. Um, that's it for, for my training. We know, unfortunately, Erica, how your training is going. and i'm I'm sorry, but, um, yeah, i don't know how to get out of that. It's all good. Yeah. Okay. The end goal is to do more races, of course not to just do this one. So trying to be patient.
00:34:36
Speaker
Yep. For sure. All right. A comment on Marathon Weekend, since we're talking you know training and all stuff. A comment about Marathon Weekend is that um if you see us, Erica and I, at Marathon Weekend at any time, I just wanted to tell y'all to feel free to say hi. And you don't have to. you know If you're an introvert or whatever and you don't want to or whatever, that's totally fine. But just know that at no time, if we're eating a meal at Casey's Court, we won't be eating Casey's. What would we be eating? We'll be eating...
00:35:04
Speaker
It doesn't matter. At the resort or we're drinking a pineapple cider at the expo, whatever it is, and you feel like, oh, I don't want to bother them or whatever. We're not here to be famous and be known, but we are here to be helpful and encouraging. yeah So if we can give you a side hug or whatever and be like, hey, it's so great. Thanks for listening to the podcast and good luck with your race. Like anything like that, we want to do it. Yeah, we've gotten so many emails and like encouraging messages from friends that I would love to be able to put a face with a name, you know, to just give you a little, a little squeeze and encourage you for your race. So yes, please come say hi to us. We would love that. Yep. And if I look like I'm about to die at mile 23 on the course, you can definitely come say hi and distract me from from the pain that I'm in. So feel free to say hi. We'd love to meet you. yeah Okay. Let's talk some Run Disney news. There's two items that I have, Erica. First, while they're both the same news, is that right we saw some merchandise. Correct. But for two different weekends, and they were kind of spread out you know on two different weeks. So we saw the first one, Marathon Merchandise. I'd love to get your thoughts on the merchandise will be available for purchase.
00:36:09
Speaker
at Walt Disney World Marathon. You're making me go first. Yeah, go ahead. um Long, awkward pause. so as much as I love Disney and run Disney yeah and all the things, I normally want all of the things.
00:36:24
Speaker
um I think my exact words to you were this is the first weekend where I don't want to buy anything. I know. was kind of sad with like like colors or lack thereof. little muted, yeah? Yeah. um I just, nothing about it is like super appealing to It's standing out to you, okay. No, which is sad because. Yeah. I don't know. I know. It's it's hard because um like marathon is such a big deal and dopey is such a big deal and all the things, even if even if it's your first 10K or half, it doesn't matter. Like it's such a big weekend yeah that like it's kind of a bummer, but maybe it's just our style. Yeah. but It just didn't land quite right. Yeah. You know i mean? And I just thought, ah man, I wanted to just be
00:37:05
Speaker
bigger yeah or maybe our expectations set too high because last year was so good right and so maybe maybe that's it i'm i'm with you in the camp of like it's fine but but i'm not writing home about it you know like it's i'm not rushing to the expo we're not gonna be able to get to expo on uh uh thursday yeah whatever what do they call that first day, I guess, of the expo?

Merchandise Discussion: Excitement and Disappointment

00:37:27
Speaker
Launch day? I don't know. We're not going to be able to be there just because of travel stuff, right? And so we're going to be coming in day late, but now I'm not worried about it. Yeah, for sure. Which sounds terrible because I want it to be great. And the storybook theme to me was super cool. I'm just not in love with the visuals that they've released. Maybe it'll be better in person.
00:37:49
Speaker
No, you're not your're whole not holding your breath. I don't know. I hope it is. I hope so. I mean, for sure, I hope so. And also I'm missing the Corksicle water bottle, at at least in the preview thing, yeah that we get every single time. And it's not in there.
00:38:04
Speaker
It's not in the pre-order merch stuff that we pre-ordered or anything like that. Like it's not there. It was some goofy looking water bottle. yeah I don't mean goofy like the race. i mean goofy like it doesn't look as great. Yeah.
00:38:15
Speaker
Anyway, the rant is over. Merry Christmas, everybody. I hope. No, joking. So I'm done. You know what is our it is our jam? The Disneyland. Oh, my gosh. We saw this The Disneyland half March. We saw this morning. That is totally my jam. I love every last bit of it. I know. It made me be like, oh, I wish I was running that race because so I like the, I don't know what, i don't even know what goes with what. But I like all, like the 5K, the 10K. I love all those. love it.
00:38:39
Speaker
It's so good. The pastel kind of colors on the black. Yeah. Looks so good. they always have like the best stuff. Darn Disneyland. I know. Anyway, we love the Disneyland. Maybe we should move out West.
00:38:53
Speaker
No, that way we can be closer to Disneyland. Oh, but this is the last Disneyland race. It doesn't even matter. Been there, done that. I do not want to move. Okay. I do not want to live in California anymore. Okay, we're getting off topic. Yeah. um Okay, but yes, the Disneyland merch looks awesome. And you know what I saw in there? The Corksicle. The Corksicle, yeah. Oh, looks amazing. I know, which why would the Corksicle be there but not for... Because I had heard last year, and I don't i don't know my knowledge, but yeah I had heard that Corksicle was... They were not longer partnering this year. Yeah.
00:39:23
Speaker
So then I wasn't surprised that I saw a different water bottle for the marathon. Right. But then there is Corksicle for the Disneyland half. I know it looks cool with the 70 on it. And I'm like, who clearly these are not the same people that design this merchandise because this is always really good. I know.
00:39:39
Speaker
How funny is it that disney run Disney operations on the East Coast seem to be like locked and loaded on point. You couldn't out-organize them if you wanted to. yeah And the West Coast, you're like, who? who ran this thing? Right.
00:39:53
Speaker
You know? Right. Yeah. But when it comes to merchant merchandise, there's West Coast, Best Coast. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my gosh. Yeah. I love it. I love the Disneyland stuff. I have no other, no no notes. No notes. I have no notes on that. Can we get the Disneyland merch people to like now that they're not going to be doing much for Disneyland? Can we get them over here on our side of the country for this?
00:40:16
Speaker
Hopefully Run Disney doesn't listen to our podcast. If they do, they might hear our genuine thought, our honest thoughts on stuff. And then our registration when we go to register might be like unavailable. Unavailable. Yeah. It's like sold out on for our browser before it even. before Just for us. Yeah. Before it even. Oh my gosh. Awesome.
00:40:35
Speaker
Well, thanks for joining us, you guys. We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and we can't wait to see and meet y'all at Marathon Weekend in just two weeks.
