Join Nicholas and Doug as they watch Godzilla do the thing that he loves to do: Raid! That's right, they're doing a commentary on Godzilla Raids Again. The rushed, and not as awesome follow up to 1954's Gojira. Still, it has some charm and fun to it.

[Movie starts at 7:50]

Introduction and Movie Overview

you
00:01:12

So what's up, guys? We're Morbid Curiosities, currently Monster Curiosities. um I'm Nick Ewers. I'm Doug Davenport. We're about to cover Godzilla raids again. He raided again. I didn't know that's what we were saying that he did in the last movie. I wouldn't call it raiding. Because raiding, think about, have you seen those videos where ah the kids post TikToks of them being going into Scientology buildings and trying to get as deep as they can.
00:01:43
Speaker
i Yeah. i Like, like that's kind of a raid. They're not stealing anything, but they're trying their game, making a game out of it, trying to get as deep as possible. But like rating, I think of also like looting, like, like Godzilla didn't take any, but he wasn't like taking people's belongings. Yeah.
00:02:00
Speaker
i mean, he did grab a bridge. He had a train in his mouth. Yeah. Neither of those belong to him. so So that's why we're classifying that is if we're going to list his crimes like amongst the all the damage and the deaths, like i think I think he shouldn't have stolen.

History and Production Insights

00:02:18
Speaker
Yeah. So this movie came out in 1955, a year after the last one. Quick turnaround. Not directed by Honda, directed by Moriyoshi Oda. i I'm going to guess that's correct um or assume it's correct. Yeah.
00:02:35
Speaker
Yeah, high turnaround rate. I was reading that like the reason Honda didn't come back was because he was already... He ah he he had obligated to direct something else, so he just wasn't able to, in just scheduling.
00:02:52
Speaker
It is just wild that even back then studios were on the same shit that they're on today, where they're like, successful movie, give us we got a sequel. got hit. while And like this was definitely a time where sequels were more less of a... like Franchises kind of didn't exist. like I mean, sometimes you have accidental franchises of how... like the universal monsters like would cross over eventually like but that wasn't like a plan thing ah and it was almost just more as like a bit like when they show up in like ab and castello meet the wolfman like wasn't like a serious universe
00:03:26
Speaker
And then, like, I feel like god this has to be, like, one of the first, like, big franchise.

International Versions and Cultural Adaptations

00:03:31
Speaker
Because, like, in terms of American franchises, I feel like Planet of the Apes was like, yeah, we're doing, we're making sequels of these. Like, that was kind of breaking the mold. but like And that's the late right? Yeah. Yeah, so this is, like, a decade before that. Mm hmm.
00:03:47
Speaker
But then like you had King Kong and I think King Kong, like Son of Kong might have come out before the first Godzilla. So there were already movies with like sequels, but nothing this expansive, even though I mean, after Godzilla raids again, they take like 10 years off. So who even knows what they intended for this to be? I think they just knew they had to do something. Like, there's like this guy this guy's blowing up.
00:04:16
Speaker
People want Godzilla. Yeah. So we got to give them what they want. What's kind of interesting, too, I don't know if this happened a lot. um For like movies, I think like King Kong might have had re-edited versions for other countries.
00:04:33
Speaker
um they definitely I had heard a story about them remaking King Kong with an actual gorilla in Japan. Really? Yeah, but that's like something that's just like totally lost to time, so there's rumors of it being like, Well, it was a gorilla that like was just a little bit big and it wasn't like ah they didn't do anything with ah like perspective change or it was just like... That still sounds kind of good. Yeah. i would watch it I would too.
00:05:01
Speaker
But then like... But this what happened with Godzilla is they had not only King of the Monsters where it was a reedited version of ah the original Gojira with an American actor. I think he's stranded at an airport doing news reports. He's like a report. I've seen that that version of it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it was on TV one day, and I got glimpses of it, but I've never seen it ah in its entirety. But then there's a a French version of Godzilla where it's a recut version of Gojira just for France.
00:05:35
Speaker
And I think there's one, I want to say it's Italy, who did another version of that. Oh, okay. You can see them all on Letterboxd. They're all just called Godzilla, and they came out in different years. think the Italian one came out in 1977, something along those lines. i wonder if the Italian one has like a lot of nudity in it or something. Yeah. The the only case I can think of something similar to that, though, is Dawn of the Dead got a lot of weird sequels from other countries. Yeah, like unofficial ones. Like that movie Zombie that I watched is an unofficial sequel, which that that movie functions more as a prequel, I think. But I don't know. It's just it's interesting. You don't see that.
00:06:18
Speaker
I feel like you don't hear about that. Like happening a lot. Well, especially now when with globalization where it's like, no, these franchises are built from the ground up for all the like, yeah, you might get a dub where, we're you know, they get some local talent to like do the movie ah in in Spanish, but they're not shooting a new movie.
00:06:40
Speaker
Yeah. So, I mean... The clothes that, like, sometimes they do do, like, different

Preparing to Watch Godzilla Raids Again

00:06:45
Speaker
country... Like, I've seen clips of, like, the Mexican Breaking Bad. forget what it's called. I've seen that. But that's, like, a full shot-for-shot, like, remake. I believe so. Yeah. Just with worse acting. Yeah.
00:06:59
Speaker
I've seen glimpses of that. When I worked at McDonald's, it would be playing in the break room sometimes. ah so It's a good break room show. It was, you know, it it ah played pretty well, but, uh, yeah. Should we raid this yeah movie? Let's see this raid. um, I'm interested. I've never seen this one. So like, yeah I have a lot of gaps in my Godzilla knowledge and, uh,
00:07:25
Speaker
You know, like, it's like the original and then a bunch of random ones in between. And then, like, kind of the most recent ones. But, like, a lot of shit in between that I'm aware of. or just haven't seen.
00:07:37
Speaker
So you want to do the countdown? Yeah, sure. Three, two, one. Godzilla. Oh, wait, let's... Sorry, let me do that one more time. Three, two, one, play.
00:07:50
Speaker
Cool. It wasn't an issue with the Godzilla. It was the controller. It was the controller. Yeah. Yeah. um I've seen this movie once before. I watched it recently for the first time. This is 2.5 on Letterboxd.
00:08:06
Speaker
I mean, yeah, I guess the Godzilla basement can go that low because there's one movie or two movies, I guess, that I've rated that. I've given that rating in the Godzilla series. One of them is an American movie, though.
00:08:20
Speaker
But I feel like this movie is like Yeah, it's a retread of the first one in a lot of ways. i mean, that's what sequels are. Yeah. It's kind of an underwhelming follow-up to the movie we watched a couple days ago. You can tell we're recording on a different day because we're all wearing we're both wearing different clothes. Yeah, we have different...
00:08:43
Speaker
thematically appropriate clothes were wearing. um But I could see from the thumbnail, it looked like there was another monster. There is. It's the first monster fight, at least in Toho history. That's kind of a big deal. It's a good monster fight. And I think the end of this movie is super solid.
00:09:00
Speaker
I think the character stuff has a nice 50s charm to it that where there's like a cliche love story, I think, that's happening. They set the bar kind of high, though, with like Eyepatch Oppenheimer in the last one, because that's such an interesting character. Like, it's not just like an iconic design, like a character you can like immediately picture, but I'm like, oh, that's like really interesting and like thematically appropriate and fucking memorable death like it's uh it kind of gave you a full meal in that sense so i'm i'm really interested like yeah what do they do with the human characters ah going forward are they kind of more a means to the end like we need to drive the plot forward will they be like thematically tied in like that character
00:09:48
Speaker
I will say the opening credits of the first movie hit way harder. Just the opening credits, the names on black. That felt like I was seeing something epic and important. Yeah.
00:10:02
Speaker
ah Seven Samurais, another movie with a really good opening credit sequence.
00:10:09
Speaker
When it just showed the shadow of the plane over the water, I almost thought it was like one of those blurry photos of the Loch Ness monster. Like it just looked like like a ah head shape.
00:10:22
Speaker
This feels very Godzilla minus one. Not to go on about that movie two commentaries in a row, but pilot. Yeah. Check. Guy in a plane.
00:10:36
Speaker
I feel like this doesn't look as good and I wonder if it's the transfer not being as good or... Or is it just the director? Like, I feel like immediately there's a visual difference and I'm not going like shit on on this guy or, you know, but it's just the there was clearly so much thought put into like every visual element of that original one, even with their limitations. I mean, it's but like kind of because of the limitations is why they had to be so thoughtful with with how they visually but portrayed everything. This one kind of just I'm i'm so far I'm getting standard 50s movie. Yeah. And that's not to say that's bad because like on average, 50s movies look pretty good. I mean, i don't know.
00:11:22
Speaker
Like, yeah. So it's it's not like a complaint. It's just noticeable. Mm hmm. I do like that the editing is like pretty kinetic for the time, I'd say.
00:11:35
Speaker
We're shifting between a good amount right now. Cross-cutting. It doesn't feel super sterile. And ah the camera is moving. It's not just sitting still. I feel like I can appreciate that about that. Because in the time period, it seems like some movies, they would just set the camera there.
00:11:53
Speaker
Or it would be sitcom style where it's like... Yeah, lockdown, shot, reverse shot. Mm-hmm.

Film Analysis: Direction and Pacing

00:12:00
Speaker
Are these operators, they're like flirting on the job, right? Like one of them was flirting with the pilot or they're joking about going on a date or something.
00:12:08
Speaker
One of them said something about borrowing daddy's car. Pretty progressive.
00:12:15
Speaker
Uh, Elevator to the Gallows had something when I watched that where I was like, oh, that's kind of progressive for the times. I feel like that's got to be because it's a French movie. There.
00:12:25
Speaker
I think it was like two people sleeping in the same bed. Maybe there was a little bit of nudity or something. Yeah. But I was like, ooh, for 50s? I mean, it is funny to see like a sitcom from that era. Like Dick Van Dyke show him and his wife have separate beds.
00:12:42
Speaker
that's Like if a husband and wife have that going on it's not a great indication in terms of like where the relationship is at but yeah that's why they did i like that framing all these couples in the 50s were really troubled they all slept in supper beds intimacy issues it's baked into the plot
00:13:14
Speaker
hey They could afford a plane for this budget. That just looks like a still plane hanging in front of a moving background. It doesn't just look like a toy plane, though, which like some of the you know vehicles in the last one definitely were. Oh, hell yeah.
00:13:34
Speaker
I kind of like that, though. Look at these shots of the clouds. this They were probably on a plane filming that because the quality looks drastically different than when they're in a studio filming this actual plane stuff. Right.
00:13:48
Speaker
Like that looked like actual cloud footage, unless they just had like stock footage of the clouds around. Like the aerial shot of that boat earlier, like that looked pretty janky. I'm like, is this stock footage of a boat? Right.
00:14:01
Speaker
Right. I mean, as far as everyone in this movie is concerned at now, Godzilla's been dead. They killed him. there It was a crazy thing that happened like a year ago.
00:14:15
Speaker
and then they fucking ah took took a pillow to his face while he was sleeping and smothered him. Yeah, they did kind of. That was a snake move. Yeah.
00:14:25
Speaker
Like, he's he's sleeping. Get him. yeah And then he immediately turned into a skeleton. Yeah, he turned into a skeleton, then his skeleton evaporated. It turned into nothing. So Godzilla has been erased.
00:14:40
Speaker
Erased from the timeline. Yeah.
00:14:46
Speaker
What's that guy doing down there? He's just stranded? Yeah. He's been stranded since the end of World War two He's been there with John C. Reilly. Yeah.
00:14:58
Speaker
Just a little tease and set up for future installments. This is Skull Island. I forget what they call King Kong's Island in the got these Toho movies.
00:15:09
Speaker
I know Mothra is from Infant Island. Okay, Mothra. You need to... Chill out. It's Mothra on the flight logs. For Epstein Island. It's like, Mothra, you have wings. Why were you on a plane? This just raises questions. why do What's with these two twin girls that you're always hanging out with? They're so tiny. like It's not a good look. like Even if they're of age, like they look they read as children.
00:15:44
Speaker
Oh, man. Mothra? Problematic? yeah
00:15:52
Speaker
I'm just kidding. Mothra's a great friend. That's not even the only problematic thing about some of those movies. Is that in this one or no? No. Okay. That's like two movies from now.
00:16:05
Speaker
But then I think maybe Kong is also from Infant Island. He's not from Skull Island in the Toho films. It's got a different name. So both pilots are now stranded here. This is why you don't save people.
00:16:22
Speaker
Yeah.
00:16:25
Speaker
What the... He's being... He said, owe my life to those... What does have against those women operators? Like... yeah I mean, they kind of helped save him, so this guy's just sexist. Yeah. Uh-oh.
00:16:46
Speaker
They're hearing a growl. Oh, no, it's Godzilla. Damn. He's just back. I would shit my pants. They're like, oh Godzilla's raiding again. We have to run. I'm really curious how they're going to explain how he's back. Because like, yes, he he turned to a skeleton and then disappeared. But then also there was the guy who said like, there may be another Godzilla. Yeah. Which like, I was thinking like, yeah, at the time, if you're writing that line, you're like, yeah, metaphorically, there's always going to be some kind of threat like this. But it's like, now it's literally like, no, there's there's another one. i I don't know if they fully answer it. Maybe they leave it up in the air. But i someone does say it must be a second Godzilla.
00:17:29
Speaker
It's like, so we're just watching Godzilla 2 throughout this whole franchise? And what's the relation to Godzilla 1? Brother and sister? ah Husband and wife?
00:17:41
Speaker
a third example of a relationship did they not know each other they kind of would pass in the ocean sometimes and they'd be like yeah so they're just totally unrelated yeah
00:17:57
Speaker
um man But like, are there just a bunch of Godzillas in the ocean? We'll have to pay attention to this. See, they're tumbling Godzilla and i think it's an ankylosaurus. Oh, OK.
00:18:10
Speaker
But they give it a name. ah I call it like Arby's or something like that. We've got the meat. ah he' Yeah, it is voiced by Ving Rhames, a very young Ving Rhames.

Monster Dynamics and Comparisons

00:18:25
Speaker
Like really
00:18:31
Speaker
Okay. See? Camera's moving. That just looked like documentary footage. Yeah, it did. ah They're like, all right, which dinosaur? This is what I would do when I was a kid. I'd just, like, flip through books. Like, I like that this is, like, and the police are asking you to look at, like, sketch of, like, was it this guy? Was it this guy? But it's dinosaur pictures. They're like, this one.
00:18:54
Speaker
That's the dinosaur that mugged me. This is the dinosaur that raided me. Dr. Yame, our so a supposition was correct.
00:19:05
Speaker
It's the worst possibility of all. Oh, he's from the last movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:19:13
Speaker
So there's another monster besides Godzilla? Also, there's another Godzilla. I feel like you guys should... The hydrogen? Now an ankylosaurus has been roused.
00:19:26
Speaker
Ankylosaurus? Dude, what, did you never study dinosaurs as a kid? It kind of seems like the bomb just woke up a bunch of shit. Like, like how many dinosaurs survived the prehistoric age and are just chilling?
00:19:40
Speaker
Anguirus, I think is how that's pronounced. Did you see what he named him? Ankylosaurus, also known as Anguirus. Oh, missed that.
00:19:52
Speaker
They lived during the same period. Essentially, we're just reading the movie right now. And I like how we'll get to what we get to, but the MonsterVerse frames of like, yes, Godzilla is from that time, but it's not like a dinosaur that we knew. Like, like that it's like, he was like, like oh, T-Rexes were at the top Fuji. No, there was like an apex predator, and that was Godzilla.
00:20:21
Speaker
But I almost feel like the idea of God, like imagining him back in those times, I'm like, he's just like above the food chain. Like, like, does he even need to interact with other dinosaurs? Was he just hunting like Megalodons or that big one from the Jurassic World movies that is just somehow always around? Right. Right.
00:20:43
Speaker
Or just like, yeah, giant shit in the ocean since see that's where he likes to chill. So it's like, it doesn't seem like he has, it's like, i I'm not imagining him just like getting in fights with like T-Rexes or whatever other, dins because it's like, why would he need to?
00:20:59
Speaker
Also, is it possible that Godzilla is from space? Ghidorah is from space. There's a space Godzilla. He's from space. It's in the name. Did Godzilla war of the worlds us and come from space and just bury himself deep in the ground?
00:21:15
Speaker
I always like that idea of like it's from space, but no, it's actually been here for a long, long time. Do you think the monster from Nope is from space? I kind of like the read that it's just like an ancient cryptid. Like it's just been hidden because it could, if it can disguise itself as clouds, it could, it's just been here. Like, and we just didn't know about it.
00:21:35
Speaker
Yeah. I like that. Nope. The movie rules. Hell yeah. The note monster should meet Godzilla. And the note monster also, cause like the smart thing about that movie, it draws that connection to that chimp that goes crazy on the set. And that's such a horrific scene. But every time I see that and rewatch that movie, I'm like,
00:21:58
Speaker
Gordy didn't do anything wrong. I agree. This is the part that I was saying ah when you were like, yeah, like this could actually be news footage. I like how they're like, all right, let's revisit this Godzilla thing. Let's watch the footage we have. And it's just the first movie. Well, if you have shit that looks that good, it should more movies should just put on the first movie. Yeah. Like, guys, check this out. Yeah. Remember how good this was just last year. We were all watching it.
00:22:33
Speaker
I mean, it is a good flex. It almost looks better with the grainy news lines, like footage lines. Who was filming and ah editing all of this? They have a really good eye, like whoever did this. Whoever got that close to Godzilla breathing the fire too? They had multiple camera setups throughout the city.
00:22:55
Speaker
Or is this just like so multiple YouTubers and you just took all of their footage and edited it together? Look at all those angles. Like, they had everything. How many cameras did they have?
00:23:09
Speaker
They did have that news crew that was on one rooftop. Maybe they were using drones. Yeah, they had drones in the fifty I do, like, we sit here for, like, five minutes and watch the best part of the first movie. That's that's pretty awesome, I gotta say.
00:23:29
Speaker
Honestly, not only should sequels do this, directors should just do, like, you know, like if the Godzilla director doing a non-Godzilla movie, people should just sit down and watch Godzilla. You think Minus Zero is going to have a moment where they'll just watch Minus One for five minutes? Yeah, it should.
00:23:49
Speaker
i do like the title of Godzilla Raids again. Yeah, I mean, it kind of has an Empire Strikes Back ah feel, like like kind of sci-fi serial vibe.
00:24:02
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:24:04
Speaker
They couldn't stop his... Okay. Yeah. Yes. Let's let's's discuss the elephant in the room. Wasn't Godzilla taking on one shot? destroyed it Destroyed him in a blink. Then he sank to the bottom of Tokyo Bay, and he was finished.
00:24:22
Speaker
They're inventors. Yes, that's not the important part.
00:24:28
Speaker
Okay, but but but... How did he return? So you're saying there was more than one Godzilla. Yeah. I guess so. That's right. That was our greatest fear.
00:24:39
Speaker
I feel like they're yada yada-ing the implications of this now. Because like I'm like, well, if there's two, there could be a dozen. like like We're talking to like a whole species now.
00:24:53
Speaker
Our greatest fear. What if there were two Godzillas?
00:25:00
Speaker
When the third comes, that baby, they're like, we couldn't even fear this. We couldn't even conceive of this. Yeah. Even though there's... We knew there was two Godzillas. And there's a third monster.
00:25:13
Speaker
An Ankylosaurus just showed up too. They're actually pretty calm for like Godzilla fucked them up the first time. And now there's two monsters from the prehistoric age. Also, how did the ankylosaurus swim? It's not a water based dinosaur. Godzilla threw it in the water earlier when they were just fighting.
00:25:35
Speaker
So ankylosaurus dead. He just drowned him. Mm hmm.
00:25:42
Speaker
What I've noticed these movies tend to do also, and that might change, but the monster will be like out of the picture before like at the end of Act 2, and then Act 3 is all, we have to take out Godzilla. He's like still around. Thankfully, Godzilla saved us. Oh, shit.
00:26:04
Speaker
How's Godzilla now? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, i which I love because I love that. It's like, yes, he can help humanity, but that's not why he's here. Like he's not our friend. Like it's a better version of the bullshit they kept trying to do in the Jurassic World movies where they'd be like,
00:26:23
Speaker
sometimes there's a dinosaur that gets along with humans. Like, Blue should have ripped Chris Pratt's face off in one of those sequels. At this point, half of the dinosaurs are friends, basically.
00:26:40
Speaker
It's crazy. They're just doing Avengers of dinosaur friend team ups. I never need to see a mutated dinosaur again either. It's such a crazy pitch that like, because in that last Jurassic World, they're like, people are to got bored with dinosaurs. And like, when would that happen? Ever?
00:26:59
Speaker
Dinosaurs are... A new generation of kids is getting into dinosaurs like all the time. Like they're forever going to be popular. And that's in a world where they've been dead for millions of years. If you were like, there's dinosaurs right now that you could go see, people would be going nuts. but Yeah.
00:27:17
Speaker
It would sell out. It would be sold out constantly. You would. And you wouldn't need to make new ones. People just be like, well, that's great. It's a dinosaur. and You just need one dinosaur. Yeah. you you need one. Yeah. Get one, get a plant eater and just sell tickets. and Just a brontosaurus. Yeah. Get that. Yeah. And sell tickets. Who cares about the animal's well-being and any of that?
00:27:41
Speaker
Whatever. Clone another one if it gets sick. who you Give him good shit. Heaven in a cage. Barely any room to stand.

Cultural Impact of Monster Movies

00:27:48
Speaker
Enough room for seating, though. A lot of seats. And just people feed it plants. You pay $2,000 to feed it in plant.
00:27:58
Speaker
Do you think they were looking back at some... Because from what I remember from Godzilla v. Kong, like that's all... like What do they call Like the center of the earth? Like ah fucking hollow earth or something? Oh, yeah. They do call it that in Godzilla v. Kong. But this they're talking about like hiding in like the crust of the earth. Like did they see that and they're like, OK, well, if we go for what if there's like just all of the middle of the earth is just Monsterville. You know, what's typically hollow?
00:28:29
Speaker
Crust. You know how like bread, when it's like a big loaf and just crust, it's all hollow inside. Check out, ah go to go to your pantry, pull out a loaf of bread, make sure there's no prehistoric monsters hiding in it because that's where they like to go.
00:28:48
Speaker
Inside of hollow places. The hollow crust. Yeah. ah the I just, I don't know. The hollow earth stuff loses me. The dramatic shift Godzilla took from movie two to movie three being friends um yeah We'll see it in the next movie, Godzilla vs. Kong.
00:29:15
Speaker
But scientists do say that Godzilla has a pea-sized brain and he's really stupid. Right, so you can't like negotiate or befriend something like that. Yeah, and they're like, King Kong, he's smart though. King Kong strategizes.
00:29:30
Speaker
And then you watch that all unfold. Not to spoil the movie. Well... The key to befriending Kong is you need like a deaf girl ah who grew up on the same island and then she can like, don't know, do like sign language or something. And to befriend Godzilla, you need one of the cast of Stranger Things. Yeah.
00:29:51
Speaker
I just remember from the trailer for that, ah was that Kyle Chandler plays her dad in in He's like, Godzilla's hurting people we don't know why. Like, it's a mystery. like Because he's Godzilla? Yeah. There's bunch of people sitting around the radio and they just announced Godzilla's coming. They're already coming up with shitty plans. They're just like, uh, flares? What if we, like, lure him out into the ocean? You mean where he lives? What if we get a big basket of fish and poison it?
00:30:27
Speaker
I mean, that's actually not bad. Yeah. I don' i mean, because you're not going to but penetrate his skin with conventional methods, but also how much poison would you need for something that big? Like a bunch. Something thing that radiates radiation. oh that just might make him more powerful.
00:30:46
Speaker
drinks that shit. I like this whole thing. Like, don't know. Getting club scene? That's cool. I remember, like, this scene was playing when I looked at the negative reviews, or it might have been, like, right after the scene. I was like, but I really like the setup of, like, the band performing and there's, like, a ballroom dance. It's just people doing their thing and then it's like, oh, fuck, Godzilla's here.
00:31:11
Speaker
Not to spoil what comes up in two seconds. Oh, shit, he's about to raid here. Oh, yeah, Godzilla, this is where he raids again. i mean, this makes sense as a place to raid. It looks like kind of upper crust. Like some people, these people probably have some money.
00:31:26
Speaker
Like if I'm going raid somewhere. it What if Godzilla just became a petty crook? He's just like not even there to destroy shit. He's like, give me a money. Yeah.
00:31:39
Speaker
There's a charm to this. It feels very of the moment. It kind of reminds me of Titanic a little bit for <unk> reasons. I don't know if it's the live band aspect. Have they done a take on Titanic where it's also a monster movie?
00:31:53
Speaker
um There's the Poseidon movie. that I know that's not Titanic, yeah but are there monsters in that? I think it's just a ship that's going down and they got to get off of it. Mm-hmm.
00:32:05
Speaker
Because, like, yeah, normally the iceberg's the monster, but i'm like, what if it was a monster monster? I think they might be on a party boat or something.
00:32:16
Speaker
They already have a Godzilla task force, which is funny because as far as they knew, they solved that shit forever. but they still formed a task force because they're like, maybe. Yeah, what if a big octopus came for us? You never know.
00:32:35
Speaker
That is the interesting thing I've heard about the Monarch show is that you get some world building of like, what is it like living in a, like a society where people are just aware that like, yeah, monster shit can happen. Kind of any, like, like alarms go off, like, okay, you got to evacuate to the, the,
00:32:53
Speaker
you know, monster bunker. Cause like this, this, this shit just happens. Um, does Pacific rim take place anywhere in the U S Godzilla universe for some reason?
00:33:06
Speaker
when that movie came out, which I've been debating on revisiting Pacific rim, cause I didn't care for it that much when I saw it in theaters, but everybody seems to love it. So good.
00:33:17
Speaker
yeah It's not his best, but it's like it's a lot of fun. I'm thinking I might get into it now that I'm on this like monster movie Godzilla run, now that we're on it together too. And then honestly, if you're willing to go further, you watch the you can skip the second one, but There's a Netflix anime, like two seasons or something called good Pacific Rim the Black. Yeah, it's pretty, pretty compelling. It's just a good setup. Like it's Australia. And the idea is like if the kaiju overwhelm a place, they just abandon it. So they're just like, oh, Australia is fucked. Like everyone evacuate. That's what we were just talking about in the last commentary. Yeah.
00:33:55
Speaker
Yeah, so they evacuate Australia, but it's a brother and sister who get left behind. And so they're like just there in kaiju land and got to got to figure out some shit. They don't have a yeah ah Jaeger.
00:34:06
Speaker
um Maybe they can find one, but it's like, what the fuck are they going to That's a great concept. I like that idea. Yeah. um Damn, it's on Netflix. Mini series. It's like two seasons. Yeah.
00:34:19
Speaker
Wrapped up?

Critique of Film's Pacing and Subplots

00:34:20
Speaker
I didn't watch season two, so I don't know if like it actually concludes or if this is if it's like a Terminator Zero where it's like, well, the season ended and maybe... is a But is Pacific Rim in the universe of those movies? Is it like a far in the future version of that? Because someone told me that when Pacific Rim came out. Not officially, but like, I mean, like it's definitely drawing on it. But I don't think they've like confirmed because like my understanding of Pacific Rim is when the kaiju show up in the future in that universe, they've never seen that shit before. It's not like it's like, oh, yeah, we dealt with Godzilla or something in the past. And we kind of have a familiarity with this, that this is.
00:35:01
Speaker
that these are and and all of those are explicitly like the kaijus are like all aliens in Pacific Rim they come through like a wormhole at the bottom of the ocean okay I'll have to rewatch that also by the way guys Godzilla's here came out of the water i wonder if the actor almost drowned when they shot that too Yeah, it's got to be pretty miserable to be in that suit. Also, Godzilla didn't look too happy there. Like his teeth, his buck teeth were fucking falling out. And he like had like a worried face. Is this a new Godzilla design or you think it's the same outfit?
00:35:40
Speaker
I think it's the same outfit, but maybe a little busted. like or Or maybe they intentionally were trying to have him be expressive in some way.
00:35:52
Speaker
This is very dim dimly lit. Yeah. This is like watching a Netflix original movie. Remember we did Rebel Ridge in the night scenes? I'm like what the fuck's going on?
00:36:04
Speaker
Rebel Ridge. What a good movie. Oh yeah we did watch that together. Fuck yeah. That movie rules. watched that with Rocia um some point when we started dating and I had to raise the star rating because I was like just as excited as the first time I watched it. It's very good. If anything, I get more pumped, especially when I know like the badass moments are coming like Aaron Pierre. What a, what a dude.
00:36:29
Speaker
Yeah. Um, there was another movie I rewatched where I was like pumping my fist. I was like, this shit rules. i Can't remember what it was though. I love a good action movie. It didn't get you hyped like that. I watched Citizen Kane for the first time. i mean, that gets you fucking amps. That movie does rule. it' It's so good.
00:36:49
Speaker
And it's like not like I put it off watching it for longest time because i'm like, ah, the the greatest movie ever made. Like whatever. It's just going like homework. It's like, no, it's very watchable. Like it's like super watchable. the pacing is like kind of modern. Like it's almost like they were like making something closer like the way we do shit now. Yeah. So well shot. It feels like, you know, um,
00:37:13
Speaker
I don't think at the time it was called Split Diopter, but it essentially gives the same exact look as that. And I was like, that feels very like De Palma and Raimi. It feels so modernly shot.
00:37:25
Speaker
It's so well So well written. Great movie. and oh It's got very great kinetic editing too. Does that make you want to rewatch Manc now that you've seen it? does. Yeah. Cause I didn't like Manc at first.
00:37:41
Speaker
Yeah, I didn't love it. i mean, I was interested by it. I was just bored by it. I'm i'm fascinated by like old Hollywood and like that era of like history, but the movie itself, was I was like, yeah, these actors are doing good job, but like yeah, I would want to rewatch it.
00:37:57
Speaker
Especially since that's such a passion project. of Fincher. Like, that was, like, basically his ode to... Like, his dad wrote that yeah script. Yeah. The podcast What Went Wrong has a great episode on Citizen Kane. Pretty insightful. They're all around a great podcast. Guys, go listen to What Went Wrong. They're, like, such a good film education podcast um where they just...
00:38:23
Speaker
very In very detailed, one-and-a-half to two-hour long episodes break down full movies, like production from conception to release, and it's it's great. The Lord of the Rings three-part episode is fantastic. Hell yeah.
00:38:44
Speaker
Godzilla's been let out to sea.
00:38:49
Speaker
Yeah, visually this movie's not as great. I feel like there's not as much to talk about. the The bar was set really high with that first one. I kind of anticipated this slight come down.
00:39:01
Speaker
I'm not i'm not like mad about it. um I'm kind of mostly just waiting for Godzilla to come back. And that Ankylosaurus. Like, Ankylosauruses are cool. Yeah. ah Yeah, I don't think this movie's, like, bad, though. As I'm watching, I'm compelled. I'm like, okay.
00:39:18
Speaker
I'm excited to see, or, like, interested to see where this goes. There's a baseline competency in, I don't know, like, it's scott got Godzilla in it. Like, yeah I don't know if you guys have heard of this guy.
00:39:31
Speaker
going to see if this was the same writer as the original. So this is a prisoner transport? I think so. I don't know what this subplot... I feel like every Godzilla movie has like one subplot where I'm like, wait, has this been going on the whole time or are we just starting this right now? Because for a second I was thinking, are we about to do a suicide squad of ah ah prisoners to send against Godzilla? Because that kind of sounds cool.
00:39:57
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know what they think a bunch, like a handful of random inmates can do against him. I mean, maybe like delay him a little bit.
00:40:08
Speaker
One of the writers from the original Godzilla is credited for this, but there are two credited writers for this movie.
00:40:19
Speaker
Is this just going to be, because like, that that kind of ballroom scene almost felt like what are interesting setups for like places Godzilla could interrupt just like okay people are enjoying this boom now there's a monster is this going to be like yeah there's a jailbreak happening and then what if Godzilla showed up yeah what if Godzilla was in the prison yeah
00:40:44
Speaker
In head. What is... I mean, there's the bridge right there, so I feel like that that's they're just leaving empty. Like, when I'm watching a horror movie and there's a bunch of empty space behind a character, i'm like, well, something's going to pop up there. Yeah.
00:40:58
Speaker
mean, dude, Manhunter, that movie, uses empty space very well. Hell yeah. Just some straight-up dialogue scenes where it's just wide-open space behind the character. Um...
00:41:09
Speaker
This is supposed to be at night. I think that's why it's so dimly lit. I think some of this was shot in daytime. Like, ah yeah, day for night. Like when they're going across the bridge. Because the night stuff in the first one looks so good. Yeah.
00:41:24
Speaker
But the sky's dark up here, but then when they went across the bridge, it was like daylight, but just the camera was super dim. Where's this prisoner subplot going? I'm like, are these the main characters now? This is our movie.
00:41:38
Speaker
They stole the movie and our hearts. You could say they raided the movie. Yeah. What if they team up with Godzilla? They're like, yeah, you're just like us, big guy.
00:41:51
Speaker
I mean, the place they're driving through looks like it would be interesting for Godzilla to raid. That was a weird cut. It looks like somewhere where he has raided. Yeah, that cut was awkward. But I'm judging it this time around. The first one where you're you're fine. This time, like, well, amateur filmmaking. yeah Get it together.
00:42:14
Speaker
Come on, guys. This is Godzilla. It's the weird cuts with these driving scenes. So I'm wondering.
00:42:23
Speaker
And we're still watching Godzilla raids again, right? Because this has become a prison break movie. Godzilla's driving that gas truck.
00:42:32
Speaker
Okay, he has to show up here, right? Like, this is like... This place is begging to get raided. What's with the... Oh, shit. Sorry. We're all good.
00:42:45
Speaker
Did that spell? Sorry, guys. I... Just a little bit. Knocked over some stuff off the table. Got so excited at Godzilla raiding. the prospect of him raiding.
00:42:56
Speaker
Yeah. Do you need paper towels? I just used a napkin. Okay. Okay. leave Leave all that in. Double it. Yeah. Or we can't cut anything out because it's the commentary. Yeah. all ah All right. I talk with my hands a lot, guys, and I punch the the table.
00:43:16
Speaker
okay Well, it's just when Godzilla shows up, it's so exciting. Yeah. I just i love to see him raid. All right. I'll kill the bit. No, this is not a bit. He's raiding. He's here. You were right, though. Where would a cool place for Godzilla to raid be? um They're still leading him away from the fucking shore, I think.
00:43:40
Speaker
Which is makes it more awkward that that like prisoner escape thing interrupted that. That that they're just like, okay, well, if we just go straight to them like leading him away, is that is interesting? like where Let's do another thing. Yeah.
00:43:57
Speaker
More miniatures. I wonder what they're shooting out of ah those miniatures to make them light up like that. if it's like a mini firework or something.
00:44:08
Speaker
Yeah, probably. Do you see the fake people? They look so funny. they like They're like test dummies, like crash test dummies, but like faker.
00:44:20
Speaker
He looked like he made a weird face in response just then. So like, are are there an implication like they're kind of hurting him or is he just like annoyed or something? I think he just looks different because he's a different Godzilla.
00:44:33
Speaker
That's just his face. I keep forgetting this is Godzilla 2. Yeah. Hopefully. Are they going to change that? We got to pay attention. Which it would have been funny if they just called it Godzilla 2 because this is a sequel, but that's also the name of the character.
00:44:49
Speaker
yeah And the script when Godzilla has dialogue, do you think it says Godzilla 2? All the pages of dialogue, yes. I don't like that plane on fire. I bet they're just spinning the camera for that.
00:45:01
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it's like watching an old sci-fi. Like, if you're watching Star Trek and the ship is getting turbulence, they just kind of just, like, tilt it. And people pretend to hold on. i mean, it seems fun as an actor. You'd be like, oh!
00:45:18
Speaker
The Ankylosaurus. Okay, how did it not drown? He just walked all the way there. I will say that suit doesn't look as great as the Godzilla one.
00:45:30
Speaker
Nah. It looks like a person uncomfortably walking. It looks like human legs are operating that thing. Yeah, its it's not it's not as good. i mean Now it's standing.
00:45:45
Speaker
The physics of this thing are baffling. I thought I understood what Inklosauruses did or could do. The background's a projection right there. Were they just fucking? What was that just then? Like he had the Ankylosaurus on the ground and he was like, it almost like he was behind him.
00:46:07
Speaker
i think he's trying to fuck him.
00:46:13
Speaker
I don't like how Ankylosaurus's back looks. I imagine in future renditions of this monster it comes together a bit better, but, uh,
00:46:26
Speaker
yeah I still appreciate the fight. Godzilla's accidentally burning the city. Yeah, that's great. It's just the Ankylosaurus looks a little awkward.
00:46:37
Speaker
um It doesn't feel as tragic. Maybe because it's just some storage facilities off the shore or whatever. Well, even feel like there's fatalities happening here. Say that again.
00:46:51
Speaker
fatality fatality There's been some fatalities.
00:46:59
Speaker
Let's get that Jonah Hill back. he Yeah, where'd he go? Where'd that guy go? i don't know. Now he just makes Apple movies starring Keanu Reeves. I didn't even watch that one that came out. I didn't either. Is that his third directed movie?
00:47:12
Speaker
Or just his second? Second, but I think he has a third coming like shortly. like He like you kind of like did back-to-back stuff or something. I did like mid-90s quite a bit when it came out.
00:47:25
Speaker
Mid-90s was good, yeah. It might have changed in a post-COVID world. Maybe them not all wearing masks will rub me the wrong way. I shake my head if I watch any movie and i'm not masked up. I'm like, mm-hmm.
00:47:39
Speaker
So I only watch superhero movies because they're always wearing masks. There was weird... We don't have to talk about COVID anymore after this, but there was a weird period during like the worst of it where ah I would watch things but like movies and people would be like having conversations, like whispering to each other. I'd be like, their faces are too close. like they're not a lot They need to be further apart. like so Mentally, my brain was just like sending me signals. so Social distancing and... like a movie that drive you crazy during COVID is like, i rewatch the thing and it's not just like social, they're, they're taking no safety

Production Value and Special Effects

00:48:18
Speaker
precautions. I mean, some of those people on the base are supposed to be scientists and they're doing an autopsy of the thing. They're just like fucking sticking their hand in there. All right.
00:48:28
Speaker
I heard someone make that complaint about a rival. They're like, these are all scientists. And they walk through that portal. Not one of them has a glove on. Not one of them has a helmet.
00:48:42
Speaker
People used to have that complaint about Prometheus of like, these scientists seem pretty dumb. That's never bothered. It's never bothered me. And also in a post COVID world,
00:48:53
Speaker
Is that really hard to believe? Yeah. that That someone would like kind of just look at a brief reading of the air like, oh, it's like Earth. All right. Let me just take it off.
00:49:05
Speaker
I do really like this fight. It feels like it's really knockout drag out. This is kind of. The John Wick of kaiju fights? if you like like In the sense that... They really peaked here. where Where it's like really long fights where you get to see them get tired. Because that's kind of the appeal to me of the John Wick and John Wick-inspired stuff. is that it's like yeah now It's great choreography, but it's like it goes for so long that you can see like everyone in the fight winding down. And this just...
00:49:37
Speaker
Probably because it's two guys in really yeah hot rubber costumes. Yeah, they weren't even, that wasn't even intentional. In the script, it says two very spry and energetic monsters tumble over buildings.
00:49:51
Speaker
But this is just like, oh man, these guys can barely stand. yeah And this footage is sped up. Yeah, the past two minutes has been sped up. Which is maybe, my theory is maybe true, is that they were getting too slow. The actors were getting too slow. So they're like fucking speed it up.
00:50:07
Speaker
I do like how it's going on. I was like, this movie has a charm. And then like the final action sequence in this movie, I won't spoil it, but that's one that goes on for a while, and I do kind of like how it takes its time, and I think it delivers. I don't think this movie deserves the two-star ratings that I saw. Basically, everyone I follow on Letterboxd give this.
00:50:29
Speaker
This is also seems to be one of the least-watched Godzilla movies on Letterboxd. People are rude on Letterboxd. I'm pretty sure Shyamalan's old, only has two and a half stars or something. That's ridiculous. That's at least a three-star movie, at the very least. um I mean, modern Shyamalan, like, two and a half stars, that's what you give, like, the happening. Right. Right.
00:50:58
Speaker
No offense anybody who likes The Happening. I mean, it's funny to watch. There's some well-directed sequences in The Happening, I think.
00:51:09
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's almost just more jarring is that you can get some like genuinely disturbing visuals and then like the goofiness comes back. like it's it's It's the combination of elements there.
00:51:21
Speaker
Shyamalan should do a Godzilla movie. Who'd you say that about earlier? ah Shit. Who did I say that about? I'm just saying, oh, Rob Zombie. Rob Zombie. yeah ah Look at that fake water.
00:51:35
Speaker
oh man.
00:51:40
Speaker
either The water might have been real, but the people that were running were fake. Something about that didn't look right. Yeah. One or two of those elements. Because the people like faded into the water. This is like an interesting vantage point to show the fight from because like, yeah, far away you get the scale and the costumes look better from that distance. And it was something about the blocking of the building to the right, like kind of being in the foreground. I don't know I really like that shot. I hope they go back to it. I mean, some of these angles are good. Yeah. That we're getting the fight from.
00:52:15
Speaker
I mean, maybe, again, you're watching this after the first one. It doesn't hold up, like, in comparison. But it's like, I think this is this fight is delivering. And, i don't know, this feels like, again, at least a three-star movie to me. Yeah.
00:52:36
Speaker
I would probably sign off on that. Unless they screw the pooch by, like, the end. Although... Like, don't This is really our Rob Zombies Halloween 2 where we're like, Godzilla raids again is the hidden gem. Secret masterpiece. Also kind of a remake of Fire Walk with me.
00:52:57
Speaker
I'm really... hoping that ah the Destroyah movie is the one that I like love. ah That's another one I saw as a kid. have barely any memory of it, but I love the design of Destroyah.
00:53:11
Speaker
So I just want to love that movie. I hope the fight scenes are great because it's still people in suits. That's what's awesome. That is awesome. There's just something i look look forward to being like, what's this fight going to look like with this monster in a suit?
00:53:27
Speaker
It's just an interesting creative hurdle of like something that's inherently kind of silly, like a guy dressed in in a rubber suit. And then people who worked on the movie did find silly. Yeah. Like, how do you shoot it and portray it in a compelling way? And the for the the first movie we set the bar really high for that. But I think like some of the ah the way they're shooting this fight is it's it's just the the I'm already forgetting this dinosaur's name. The ankylosaurus. Ankylosaurus looks kind of rough in certain places. like
00:54:01
Speaker
But that biting of the neck, Godzilla biting the neck, that looked good. And the sounds the monster's emitting, we have the volume pretty low, but it's got a pretty nice and separate sound from Godzilla. It's almost like, ah kind of. Yeah, no, I like all that.
00:54:17
Speaker
It's just they probably, it with the limitation of the costume they have for the Ankylosaurus, it's like stick to the like the like farther away angles or more obscured or like really save a close-up.
00:54:31
Speaker
Yeah, and maybe focus on monsters with two feet. It is a yeah weird dynamic when it's like, well, he's just towering over that little guy. Yeah, can't shouldn't Godzilla just flip him on his back? Just stomp him.
00:54:46
Speaker
Flip them and curb stomp them. We're seeing a lot of destruction here, but yeah, it doesn't have the same weight as the first one because that really just felt like a like.
00:54:59
Speaker
Oh, we're they're reliving the bomb over again. Like that. that That's it's it's back. But this is just like. I don't want to say it feels like Marvel movie destruction, but you know how those fights always happen away from cities now and stuff of like, they find some deserted place. Civil war is like, don't know, this German airport seems fine.
00:55:22
Speaker
Let's this' fight here. Like this almost has that energy of like, they found the least populated area. Yeah, it's kind of like they didn't want to do the work with extras or the big crowds. like Which is a you know it's a lot of work, I imagine. And this was a fast turnaround.
00:55:40
Speaker
That's good destruction. It looks good, but again, like it would be cooler to know, oh, there were people living Yeah. it's It does feel pretty weightless.
00:55:55
Speaker
I have to assume there were at least a handful of homeless people who were living there that got crushed or incinerated. So it is sad. Yeah.
00:56:06
Speaker
Oh, man.
00:56:11
Speaker
I like the post-Godzilla, like, mourn for the city that was just lost type of thing. Like, ah man, this sucks. We got to rebuild this.
00:56:23
Speaker
We have to rebuild. Well, it it is just the the fact of like it already has that energy of when Godzilla first appears. it's like Japan has already rebuilt itself and now we have to do that again. But he keeps coming back. So it's like they just have to keep doing it every time Godzilla comes back. It's like, man. Yeah. These guys can't catch a break. This one they did establish. It's a different city, though.
00:56:49
Speaker
Which makes sense, but also it would have been interesting for if he just kept hitting the same place over and over and over again. um It looks like minus zero is going to go to New York. I've heard talks about that.
00:57:03
Speaker
I wonder what that'll be. I don't like the idea of Godzilla already going to America, but. i don't love it either. Have they said there's going to be another monster? um They haven't ah said anything in particular, but Kyle, ah my brother, who's, you know he's my brother, but for the listening, he's like super Godzilla fan. um Him and I think a bunch of other Godzilla fans are speculating and they have a theory. Do you want to hear ah their potential theory? Yeah, I'll hear it.
00:57:38
Speaker
So they were saying, I wonder if I should bleep this for the listeners. Oh, yeah. I don't know. Or just if you don't want to hear it skip ahead. Well, I don't know. You're watching it with the movie. So skip the movie and the commentary ahead. Here, I'll re second i'll meet i'll mute my mic so no one will hear it.
00:57:59
Speaker
oh that's cool. Yeah. um That would be interesting. They think because there are things on the poster that like they believe are hinting to that monster making an appearance.
00:58:12
Speaker
But there were also some weird like teases like at the end of ah minus one, especially regarding the the girl who you think like dies in the one C destruction scene, but then she's in the hospital.
00:58:25
Speaker
But isn't there some kind of implication? She's like infected with something. She's got like Godzilla blood or something in her. Yeah, that I don't remember Godzilla vs. Bialante like too much, but that reminds me of a plot point that happened in Godzilla vs. Bialante.
00:58:42
Speaker
But I'm just like, what does that even mean? Like, is she going to turn into a Godzilla? Is it like ah it's like a vampire? Yeah, you get get some Godzilla in your blood. You turn it in or if she's like a hybrid running around on the ground.
00:58:57
Speaker
What if she becomes baby Godzilla? Damn. I like this. It's snowing now. This is a different lo location. See, I feel like a lot of this is them just like at a drawing board coming up with like, okay, scenarios and locations that Godzilla could just pop up at. Mm-hmm.
00:59:16
Speaker
and Yeah, they were talking about how Godzilla showing up delayed the wedding that the one girl and some guy were supposed to have. I wonder if that's the same wedding from the last movie, if Godzilla just keeps getting in the way of the same wedding. They just never get married. Because ah a lot of like cast members do return um from movie to movie in these earlier Godzillas.
00:59:43
Speaker
Yeah, I've noticed some, but I didn't clock if the wedding party was the same. But there is like a lot of wedding talk in this one. And that guy was even like, I feel like he's the fake snow. He yeah, it's like coming down mostly in the middle.
00:59:58
Speaker
What are you saying, sir? ah No, like I was talking about finding brides, but I don't think that was meant to be literal because they had it in quotation marks. So i was like, so he's just looking to get laid. Like, is that what he means? Which is a euphemism.
01:00:13
Speaker
But they can't say getting laid in the 50s. You can't say, I gotta get my dick wet.
01:00:21
Speaker
So this is like a winter fishing boat. Oh, minus one. We're just going to keep pointing out things that they kind of repeat or reference in minus one. Because when he's on the fishing boat, that is one of the best sequences.
01:00:38
Speaker
up Water, minus one. but i'll wait. They didn't show water. That's the sky, damn it. It's the opposite of the ocean. The sky was in minus one. Oh shit, you got me. And that was also a plane, but we already pointed that out.
01:00:54
Speaker
They're making this wedding centerpiece. They're like, if this wedding doesn't happen, this will be the end of so civilization as we know it.
01:01:07
Speaker
We're right back where the movie started. a guy in a plane. Except this guy seems like a real goofball. Yeah, I don't know if he's my favorite, but at the wedding of it all.
01:01:19
Speaker
What if he gets to the point where it's like, if anyone objects now, you know, like, say your thing. And then Godzilla comes to the back or they do like the end of The Graduate. He's like, Godzilla's like banging him out on the glass and then the bride comes running out and then they get on a bus together.
01:01:37
Speaker
And then, you know, they take time to actually think about what they've done. They look kind of uncertain. Yeah. Kind of has the energy of the Spider-Man 2 ending.
01:01:48
Speaker
Yeah. As we all know, the graduate ripped off Spider-Man 2.
01:01:55
Speaker
They're really dragging out this fishing boat thing. This one feels like to me is ah even though like it's going off the success of the first one because it was made so quickly.
01:02:07
Speaker
i don't know if they had as big a budget. So like I feel like. We might not be seeing as much monster stuff, and then when we do see it, like it looks like a little cheaper.
01:02:20
Speaker
Yeah, because we did get a good amount of monster stuff, but it was all really concentrated to one section and like one location. Because they just let him lose. By the time you get to the last act, they're kind of just like, he's off the chain.
01:02:32
Speaker
like He's just tearing shit up now. Yeah. Yeah, he really was a raiding the place in that last one. It really feels like they're padding this out a little bit.
01:02:45
Speaker
a A little bit. And it makes me wonder if like this, since we're getting like the introduction of the formula in terms of Godzilla fighting another monster of like, then ah how much of this do other movies take in terms of pacing in terms of like, yeah, we don't have the most money. So we really need to just like find some bullshit for these people to do. Yeah, like they're just talking about like this guy found a girlfriend or something. They're communicating with the the pilot over the radio about nonsense.
01:03:13
Speaker
I do like the visual, like the imagery of it being winter. yeah the setting's cool.
01:03:21
Speaker
I like stuff set in winter. it has the potential to be scary. I love me some cold horror. i mean, that's why I'm really excited for... Well, a number of reasons I'm excited for the Resident Evil movie, but I like that it's set during winter.
01:03:35
Speaker
Yeah, I love anything set during winter. It's got a really good vibe. Very specific. and I mean, blood just looks good on the snow. That makes me sound like a psychopath. I fucking love the look of blood, fresh blood on the snow.
01:03:48
Speaker
Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight, Will? Yeah. It appears quite black. Man, Brian Cox is so good in Manhunter. It was weird when he said, I'm loving it.
01:04:05
Speaker
Oh man, hopefully McDonald's hears that and they cast me. To be the new Brian Cox? Yeah.
01:04:13
Speaker
That's what that role is just called. The new Brian Cox. Is he technically playing mcdond McDonald, Ronald McDonald? I mean, he's like disembodied. We don't see him. So he could be anybody. He could be you or me.
01:04:28
Speaker
He could be both of us. He could be Jesus. the same time.
01:04:34
Speaker
This is just like people partying. Yeah, it it feels so disconnected from everything else we've seen. i mean, we spent like 10 minutes watching a prison break and then it just went back to Godzilla. So like, I feel this kind of has that same energy, except they didn't have the budget to do something as big as a prison break again. So they're just like just Christmas. Yeah, they're celebrating.
01:05:01
Speaker
Oh, man. Come on, let's get to it, guys. Yeah, this is making me feel like a kid again, because I was totally fine with the human stuff in the first one. like I was actually like adding it to me in terms of like like like the tone and the world building, but for for this, it does feel like a drag.
01:05:20
Speaker
Yeah, because they're not even having like a conversation about anything related to Godzilla, or it just, again, it feels so disconnected. i don't really care about who most of these people are.
01:05:37
Speaker
And what they're talking about really doesn't feel like it means anything. Well, it's like, are they in the same movie? like Like, do they know that Godzilla, like, blew up an area where no one lives and no one got hurt? Like, don't they have opinions on that?
01:05:56
Speaker
Yeah, what are these guys doing? I mean, the location looks nice, but... I like that we keep going back to that. like it this just like It looks cool. Yeah. but Because it does. Yeah. It looks like a really nice place to just be.
01:06:09
Speaker
And honestly, how much of good filmmaking is just like, you got a fucking good location. Yeah.
01:06:19
Speaker
It's like we were talking about sentimental value off mic, but that's a movie where it's like, maybe i only like it because it's got good locations. I mean, honestly, i feel like maybe 80% of my enjoyment of Evil Dead Burn where i was like, this is a good house for a horror movie. Like, this is this is a nice this is a nice little spot.
01:06:41
Speaker
um There was a real good aerial shot in that movie when shit first pops off where I was like, damn, that's fucking awesome. yeah It felt real.
01:06:52
Speaker
I want to see that director's previous thing because he was doing cool stuff with the camera that at first I was like, oh, is he just like doing Ramey homage because it's Evil Dead? But then I saw a clip of i forget it's called like infested or something. But he's like moving the camera in ways in that one where i'm like, oh, I think this guy just like likes that style. film but Like he's clearly like a fan of Ramey. But I'm like, oh, this is just like something he does.
01:07:18
Speaker
Which probably makes sense of like Raimi's song. was like, no, this guy looks like you make evil dad. Hell yeah. Yeah, he had a good sense of directing. um Even if he was French, we'll let it slide. Yeah.
01:07:32
Speaker
So these guys came in and said that the fishing boat sunk and they believe that it was Godzilla. Finally, Godzilla talk. how who should We should have had a stopwatch. Yeah.
01:07:45
Speaker
That must have been 10 minutes without anything Godzilla related. We should have spilled more pop because like if we would have had we had the time. like we We had time for like a larger cleanup of like while nothing happens.
01:07:59
Speaker
and it would Like what did we miss? Nothing. Yeah. We're back in the plane again. is this the same guy from the beginning? I think so. But also fuck this guy. Yeah. Yeah.
01:08:13
Speaker
kind of getting tired of all these characters.
01:08:19
Speaker
Bring back Dr. Eyepatch, man. Even if he's dead, whatever. had a twin. Godzilla came back. Yeah, he had a twin. Godzilla had twin. And the eyepatch is over the other eye. It's like reverse. Yeah.
01:08:37
Speaker
And instead of building the O-bomb, that twin built the N-bomb. Oh, wow. You don't want to know what it that does. Don't drop it. Don't do it.

Final Thoughts on Godzilla Raids Again

01:08:55
Speaker
All right. This guy's continuing the search. Or could have found him immediately. This feels really low stakes. Like, he's just chilling. He's like, I don't see him. um Like, you're searching for the most destructive force on the planet.
01:09:15
Speaker
Like, I don't know. And you're just hanging out. Yeah, like no one seems too worried. Like at least they were there was like a stoicism to ah like the meetings in the first movie. But that's also just like not the stereotype, but Japanese culture kind of, you know, promotes that kind of professionalism. But there still felt like a sense of like we need to do something about this.
01:09:38
Speaker
Yeah, and this one everyone's talking about the wedding pretty heavily. It doesn't seem like they care that there's a Godzilla and another dinosaur. Yeah, well, the other dinosaur's dead. Yeah, but... Godzilla bit his neck so hard, and he basically killed him the same way the Spinosaurus kills the T-Rex in Jurassic Park 3. That is true.
01:10:00
Speaker
I wonder if that was intentional homage. Joe Johnson stealing from Godzilla Raids again. does he think he is? Christopher Nolan? Jurassic Park 3 should have just been called Dinosaurs Raid again.
01:10:14
Speaker
that would have been good great title now that you hear it honestly even though like even with the fraction of these movies i've seen with all the blind spots as a drastic movie should take a page from godzilla in terms like how you build out your world and like what to do for sequels not this sequel specifically but in terms of just like where we know these movies are going, where they get like so zany. and like Jurassic World needs to be way dumber because it's not ever going to be back to like where it was before. So like don't even try to be smart. Just like just just be dumb as shit. like had Dinosaurs with guns.
01:10:55
Speaker
The talk. Or be all over the place in it in the way that it seems like Godzilla is where like one is goofy, then the next one is a deadly serious about the end of the world.
01:11:07
Speaker
Yeah. mean, that'd be And then just like reboot it randomly and be like, now we're rebooting it. Yeah, whatever. They don't all have to be a sequel to the first Jurassic Park.
01:11:20
Speaker
You know, seeing Jurassic Park, I really am just glad Samuel's still with us. It's just, what a gift. Mm-hmm. um Are you going to see ah David Robert Mitchell? Is that his name?
01:11:34
Speaker
Oh. ah um It follows under the Silver Lake director. Yeah, that's of the remaining blockbusters this summer. I mean, it's really just the Odyssey and that. Like, I don't.
01:11:53
Speaker
like The summer has been like, there's been good movies, but not really the blockbusters weren't like the, I mean, cause like what other blockbusters did we get? Supergirl masters universe, which masters universe isn't like terrible, but it's like, that's not, that's not what I'm looking forward to when I'm like summer movie season. Let's Yeah.
01:12:13
Speaker
Masters of the Universe, I think, could have been a lot better if they just cut out so many of the jokes that were in there. There was just so many unfunny jokes. The HR jokes were always, when they talk about like his job in the the real world or on Earth, and it'd be like...
01:12:30
Speaker
his boss would be like, oh, but consensually or something. like I don't know. It had the vibe of like, when did you guys write this? This feels like this is like from a script from 15 years ago. and Wouldn't Brett Ratner write this? um I didn't hate He-Man.
01:12:47
Speaker
And I'm not even like... mad at Supergirl I was just so i was bored out of my fucking skin watching that movie and I was just the whole time thinking about how I would rather be walking my dog right now and I was like these are supposed to be fucking theme park rides right yeah like what make it fun don't know on paper if you tell me like yeah Supergirl movie it's kind of like a little bit of a western like basically like doing true grit but ah
01:13:18
Speaker
but uh supergirl is the fucking rooster cogburn but i don't know it doesn't doesn't feel as fun as that idea should be yeah it it really doesn't and there's something too that i'm so over um i'm so over actors playing drunk or stoned and it just being it just not coming across realistic Well, and in it just being a shorthand for, like, I have don't really have beef with Millie Alcott. Because i think she is well, like, I feel like that's probably one of the better elements movie. But I agree with what you're saying in terms of like, her be because that's, like, she's, like, supposed to be a party girl at the beginning.
01:14:03
Speaker
And I don't know. That just feels that feels kind of dated, too, in terms, like, shorthand for, like, this person's a mess where it's, like, Especially for something like I know Gunn didn't make the movie, but he I feel like he would have a more nuanced view of someone who's like going through trauma and like kind of repressing it with like substance abuse and stuff like that. There would be.
01:14:27
Speaker
It would be like kind of an exploration of that. Instead of just someone who just slurs their words. and Well, you can't really do that, man. You can't take that sword, man. And it's like I've never been around a drunk person who speaks that way.
01:14:45
Speaker
It's just like, I don't know. I understand it's probably a hard thing to do to act like you're on some type of substance, but it's just it's done bad most of the time.
01:14:58
Speaker
i It makes you appreciate when it's done well. Like the ah Apple horror comedy Widow's Bay, there's an episode where the main character gets dosed with shrooms. And his like trip acting is like, well, the the editing and filmmaking in that episode is really good too, because you'll just like cut ahead and he's lost time. And like the way he plays, like his disorientation is like really good.
01:15:21
Speaker
Nice. I, that movie's on, or that show's on my list. It's so good. And I just, none of us have an Apple TV login right now, but we've both been talking about getting one. Ty West directs an episode and it might be like the best thing he's done. Very cool. Yeah.
01:15:37
Speaker
Um, it's been a while since we've done the movie talk. Uh, they've been circling around Godzilla. It's a lot of this last like part of chunk of this movie is people fly around. They're like, yeah, Godzilla guy being like, I can't find Godzilla. Then guys the plane, we found him. And they just circled around for five minutes. I think I might have fallen asleep during a bit of this when I first watched it because I don't remember ah that much of nothing happening for this. Because honestly, during those parts, I'm like 2.5.
01:16:10
Speaker
I can kind of understand when Godzilla's on screen. We're bumping it up a little bit. Minimum of a three star movie. Yeah.
01:16:22
Speaker
I do. I like the setting. I like their goal. They're trying to bury him in the ice. They want to cause an avalanche to bury him.
01:16:33
Speaker
But even just the setup of this is like two planes there's they've sent after him like It was like the whole army was they were throwing everything at him before.
01:16:45
Speaker
and they ran out. They just everything. They ran out of army. The send Adam. a One plane's going down the fucking goofball. Glad he's out of here.
01:16:58
Speaker
He had the energy of ah the fucking cop from The Furious. I was to say he had the energy of Michael Keaton in The Flash when he just decides to kamikaze his bat plane into one of the Kryptonian ships. where It's just like, man, you really want to die. Yeah.
01:17:19
Speaker
Just trying to die. Kill me.
01:17:29
Speaker
They're dropping the bombs. So does like the govern rest of the government just not care? or Because it's like you sent two planes to deal with your Godzilla issue.
01:17:41
Speaker
I think they're just by a small fishing town. So the threat is like... there only... But one's like a fishing plane that was there and this is like a jet. So why aren't there more jets?
01:17:55
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know what the what the deal is actually, where the government is. Yeah, because it almost like if that's an intentional commentary where it's like, oh they're not deploying because the area where Godzilla's fucking around like doesn't matter to them as much. like That would be interesting, but I don't know if that that's what's happening here. It kind of just feels like a budgetary thing.
01:18:18
Speaker
She's letting him know that I think the pilot died. We all loved him. By crashing your plane. She showed us a way to defeat him. You just have to kill yourself. Yeah.
01:18:32
Speaker
Cause an avalanche.
01:18:36
Speaker
So who are these people in the boardroom though? Because this doesn't feel like the Japanese government. This is just like a company.
01:18:48
Speaker
are Is this the fishing boat company? That's what it like, we will take on the Godzilla problem. Which again could be like, oh yeah, the common people have to take care of this Godzilla problem on their own. That's explored in later Godzillas, but that's like an actual, like they're making a point of that commentary. This feels a little confused in terms of like, why is this their, problem specifically their problem and their problem alone? Because yeah.
01:19:16
Speaker
Godzilla's, i don't know if you guys know, he's like a big guy. Like it's usually like at least a country ride problem. Honestly, like I said in last commentary, the whole planet should, every country once they hear there's a Godzilla happening should maybe at least tune in to be like, so what's happening over there?
01:19:35
Speaker
They've got more pilots on the way. And I think this is a flashback to the pilot's plan.
01:19:44
Speaker
Which, why show us that now? It's almost like like, if you show us what the plan is and how it could go wrong, like that's usually like a better source of tension. i mean, there's different ways you can do You cannot reveal what the plan is, and we see them do it.
01:20:02
Speaker
Or you do the, I mean, Breaking Bad would do that a lot, where it's like you have an elaborate plan, you see it go wrong. Yeah. This should be more like Breaking Bad is what I'm saying.
01:20:15
Speaker
Put a pin in that note. Maybe Godzilla will, you know, borrow some elements from Breaking Bad. mean, Bryan Cranston does make an appearance in Godzilla movie. Yeah, so I said some elements from Breaking Bad will borrow one one element. Yeah.
01:20:32
Speaker
yeah Oh, no, they're getting him. They're trapping Godzilla in the ice. He just looks... Let's go like a kid in a ball pit. Mm-hmm.
01:20:44
Speaker
He's getting there. He's pretty cold.
01:20:51
Speaker
Yeah, what happens if you bring down his temperature? Like, he gets a cold? He gets a fever? Yeah. Good thing? For more cowbell? Okay, so these are military guys.
01:21:04
Speaker
They have guns and barrels. Yeah. It just took them a while to get there. They're like, fuck, we were so, Godzilla fucked us up so hard last time.
01:21:15
Speaker
gotta to recoup. It's taken us a year. Mm-hmm.
01:21:21
Speaker
But it is telling like it's just dudes rolling barrels off of a thing like we had vehicles and shit like they were so many miniatures in in that last one when they deployed like you felt the scale like yeah they need to stop this they're throwing like everything just feels like low energy this feels like a hangout movie.
01:21:41
Speaker
Yeah, and the it does feel like limited budget, them being like, we can afford people rolling barrels, not ah big tanks or mini tanks.
01:21:52
Speaker
I mean, some of these soldier actors are trying to sell it. One of them's getting like really manic. of like hes He's making it sound like that this is dire, but I don't know if I'm buying it.
01:22:05
Speaker
Godzilla's gonna crush them. He needs to crush someone. There's been like a zero kill count so far. Yeah, Godzilla's been pretty sloppy, pretty bad. He did kill a monster, i guess.
01:22:17
Speaker
Yeah, but like that's expected like in terms of like collateral damage. I mean, was gonna say it'd be like a a hurricane where no one dies, but I guess that does happen. Sometimes there are storms where no one dies.
01:22:33
Speaker
Look at all those barrels. So they're just going to light them up? Yeah. Fire at the barrels. I mean, that's what I learned from video games. If you have a barrel nearby and you shoot it, explodes.
01:22:48
Speaker
Yeah, Gears of War. That was a big one.
01:22:52
Speaker
A new one coming out next year. New Gears? Mm-hmm. Oh, nice. But it won't be for the Xbox that I have. No, it'll be the new one. yeah um Oh, I think it's actually a prequel where it's like the beginning of emergence. Like when the war starts. I'd like that.
01:23:11
Speaker
That would be really cool. Because just the setting is interesting and I feel like all the games don't equally like dig into because I always want to be like, what's going on Where are we? And how did this start happening? like question Because it's like, yeah, the games don't. That's not Earth. That's like a different. Yes. Sarah. Sarah.
01:23:30
Speaker
And then the whole deal of like, yeah, where the Locust came from, like all that stuff's interesting. i I do really like the Gears of War games. I haven't played the storylines, story modes for four or five.
01:23:44
Speaker
I think there are five games. Yeah, when I had Game Pass for a little bit, I played through the campaign of four and that was decent. I have four or five. If you have an Xbox controller, we should play through the campaign of whichever it one that it is that I own, because I've never done that. Let's do that, yeah. because i And I only played single player on on four, and i and I still have never played five, so...
01:24:08
Speaker
ah The interesting thing about four is that like it's supposed to be like relative p like the locusts haven't reemerged or anything yet. So all the conflicts are happening or between other human factions, which is the implication of like that's what it was like before the locusts emerges. Like, yeah, like regular war shit.
01:24:27
Speaker
Damn. And that's four. Yeah. You have four. i have it I have Game Pass, so like i could i could play I could log in and play 4 with someone like on my computer. Okay.
01:24:39
Speaker
Yeah, we should do 4 and then 5. Yeah. yeah yeah Is 4 the one where the robots get introduced? Yes, yeah, they're deploying, like, those have been, the COG have, like, used those to, like, stop, like, riots and stuff, and, like, because it's, like, supposed to be, like, even though the war's over, supplies are scarce, so there's, like, raiders and stuff, but, like, you meet some of the, there's people who are hungry and shit, but they're, like, yeah, deploy the robots against them. Oh, wow.
01:25:06
Speaker
Yeah, I like the robot's ah sniper weapon. I would use that in multiplayer where you got to, like, charge it. Yeah, yeah. i remember it being cool. um They're still shooting nice at Godzilla. It's been going on for a while. I remember this being a bit better.
01:25:25
Speaker
It's like not terrible. it's just like more clear. It really makes me appreciate appreciate how one masked its limitations and like made those strengths.
01:25:39
Speaker
Yeah. Of like what it can't do, but it's like leaning into it and like really interesting and compelling ways. This one just really has to like stall. Like, why is this plan taking this long to like...
01:25:53
Speaker
but You're just blowing up a bunch of ice. They got to get the movie to 80 minutes. Why is it? It could be 70 minutes. That's fine. Yeah, they could have chopped 16 minutes of this off of this thing easy.
01:26:06
Speaker
Could be an hour. I don't give a fuck. like Make them as short as you want. Yeah, it's just really dragging. Because like if it's a budgetary thing, make the movie shorter. like It costs less money to make a shorter movie.
01:26:29
Speaker
Godzilla's killing a bunch of them. Finally, he heard my complaints. He's just swadding them out of the air like flies. This one dude is really into it, though.
01:26:39
Speaker
The guy on the boat with the binoculars. Yeah, no a couple of these soldier actors are really trying to sell the weight, but it's like too little too late. like Like you're trying to put a lot on their shoulders when the rest of the movie hasn't really conveyed that this is a big deal.
01:26:56
Speaker
Yeah. Which that could be interesting if an intentional but thing like where you get to the point where it's like. and when i sorry like i was talking about like the Monarch show. It's like, yeah, this happens pretty routinely. There's a monster, whatever. Like we're kind of used to this. But this is the second time. So this should still be a big deal. And the fact that there was another. ah There were two prehistoric dinosaurs like showed up and were wrecking shit. Like, i think you guys should care.
01:27:23
Speaker
They are pretty chill about it, but also I think technically in this universe, Rodan would have shown up too. Oh, Rodan's like a prequel? Roseanne. She's in this? Damn. Rodan, I want to say, also came out in 1954. Oh.
01:27:43
Speaker
oh Yeah. um And Rodan is a part of these movies because Ghidorah, the three-headed monster, Rodan and Mothra are both in that one.
01:27:55
Speaker
Okay, that makes a lot more sense. And that's like the first time Godzilla encounters Rodan as far as I know. Oh, they got Godzilla almost buried.
01:28:07
Speaker
But even considering that, like say they have dealt with another monster between Godzilla incursions, this is still way too chill.
01:28:18
Speaker
And then sometime between this movie and King Kong versus Godzilla, Mothra also occurs in their world. Okay. But they they catch you up to Mothra when they introduce her in Godzilla's world, I think.
01:28:34
Speaker
Mothra. Now that's an actress there. She's... What a beauty. I do wonder if they're like, we built this fucking creature already, put her in another movie. She better meet Godzilla.
01:28:49
Speaker
And just as a way to defeat him, I'm assuming, like, I'm not watching the clock, but if this is how they defeat him... That's kind underwhelming. They just like... Bury him.

It's like breaking an ice tray. They just dumped a bunch of ice on top of him. they're like, chill out. I mean, if this if these movies take place in the year that they come out, he's under that ice for like 10 years. So it's a Actually, I'm stupid. It's a great plan.

Don't listen to me. They even painted a picture to commemorate the death of Godzilla.
01:29:27
Speaker
So that is how they defeat him. Yeah, they bury him in snow. Snow and ice. just Just like Jack Torrance. The end. Forever.

Audiences probably were like, damn, that's the end of Godzilla. Because we go like 10, I think it's more like 9 years without a Godzilla movie. But yeah, that's Godzilla raids again. He raided again. He raided again and then they stopped him for good. Mm-hmm. Never to be seen. ah in the next movie, that's a third Godzilla.
01:30:02
Speaker
this going to be like the Scream movies where they keep, at you know, it's like, oh, there's another killer. like you keep on basking, like, oh, shit, another Godzilla? Yeah. I like that.
01:30:13
Speaker
Which, you know, Scream never took my idea of, like, you need to get to the point where there's, like, 20 Ghost Faces. Do like a whole town is Ghost Faces, but they're ah working independently. They don't know each other are killers and they're all like have different agendas. Yeah. i'm a I'm excited to see where ah just...

I don't know, not to see, but just to experience the wackiness of these movies. This feels like we're just sticking our toe in. Even like the next couple to come feel like just entry points into how off the wall, because we're going to go to space and shit like that. Yeah. In in terms of just jumping off points for where this world and the franchise goes, this kind of lays a little bit of the groundwork in terms of like Godzilla can fight another guy. Mm-hmm.
01:31:03
Speaker
But then in context, it's like that's such a small part of this. I mean, that was honestly the best part is when they are fighting. And then movie kind of slugs along until the end there. and Yeah.
