Rebranding and Monster Movies

00:00:54
Speaker
Oh, you weren't kidding. Yeah. They literally just... No. No fuss. Just... Here we are. Yeah. Oh, jeez.
00:01:10
Speaker
Do I to let this play? What's up, guys? It's my Morbid Curiosities, now Monster Curiosities. I'm Nick Ewers. I'm Doug Danforth. We're trying to figure out the Blu-ray for King Kong vs. Godzilla. What is this? Oh, the minions. They're in this. Cool.
00:01:29
Speaker
Banana.
00:01:32
Speaker
uh yeah there isn't a menu but i feel like yeah these are titles um riveting podcast stuff you haven't seen minions and monsters not yet it's uh i might just go see it on my own because every time i pitch it to ju je she's like uh pretty cool on it and i'm like okay but you laugh every time a preview or just a little commercial with the minions comes up we we We all love the minions, guys. like it's like like air you know like We just take it for granted because they're just it's like an element.
00:02:07
Speaker
yeah i It will be leaving theaters soon because I was trying to plan another day seeing it with my nephew and my mom. But ah yeah, it looks like either today or yesterday might have been its last day in like ah most theaters. Oh, shit.
00:02:28
Speaker
Yeah. I wanted to see it in 40X. Didn't happen. Two tickets, $72. That's ridiculous. Damn. Yeah, so... Yeah. So that's good enough to be playing, but two movies that came out two months ago and are now on home release are still like back rooms and obsession still have screen times. Yeah. Like that, that's, that's pretty incredible. Well, I guess minions wasn't, if the filmmaker had been 20 years old, people would still be seeing. men
00:03:00
Speaker
I think every film should say the age of the filmmaker. At the beginning. with it with Yeah. When they're promoting it. Like how Strange Darling said this film was directed in 35 shot in 35 millimeter. How was the director? Why do I care? Yeah.
00:03:16
Speaker
Let me see his ID. Let me see some identification to quote ah Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. All right.
00:03:27
Speaker
So, guys, we're going to start King Kong versus Godzilla. um Yeah, we're watching it on the DVD, so I don't know how you guys are going to be watching it. It's not really streaming anywhere, so it seems like it's kind of difficult to find,

King Kong vs. Godzilla: A Deep Dive

00:03:43
Speaker
but...
00:03:43
Speaker
I mean, I'm not advocating for anything illegal, but I bet if you just Google this, the title in full movie, there'll be, if not Vimeo, maybe like a Russian site that's basically Vimeo will have it.
00:03:57
Speaker
and Probably on YouTube even with ads. This could easily be, because it's like not going to be one of the ones where the you know, the rights holders are like, we better make sure that shit, we got that shit on lock. Like, I feel like that this is, and this is not even denigrating. I haven't seen this movie. This is going to be my favorite one. Maybe this going to be my favorite movie ever. Not just my favorite Godzilla movie. This is basically my favorite movie. Better than the Matrix. All right. What are we going to start on?
00:04:26
Speaker
On go. On go. Okay. Three, two, one. to one go All right. It worked. Universal.
00:04:38
Speaker
Turn off the controller so I don't bump it. Yeah. Old school Universal. I like the old logos. um Produced by Toho. So I have a little bit of backstory on this. Willis O'Brien, the visual effects artist who did King Kong, had the idea for this movie. Doug, I think you'll like this. Didn't start off as King Kong versus Godzilla. His career was in a rut, so he wrote a script for King Kong versus Frankenstein. Oh, fuck yeah. Yeah, and there was going to be a thing where they were both ah like circus acts, and then they end up getting out and getting in a fight. But for legal purposes, they changed Frankenstein's name to Prometheus. Then they changed it to something else. i can't remember after that.
00:05:27
Speaker
And he tried to shop the script around, and everybody hated it, except for... They fools. Yeah, yeah. Well, Toho, it does sound potentially better than the movie we're about to watch, maybe less problematic, too. well But ah Toho liked it, but they're like, he's got to fight one of our monsters. Right. And so that was the origin of this.
00:05:52
Speaker
That's cool. Yeah. I thought this was another Universal logo, but this is just the movie. it's ah It looks the exact same as... I mean, it's it's the planet Earth, so I'm saying it the same, but it looks like the same Earth. It's like seeing a map being like, is that the Universal logo just flat?
00:06:15
Speaker
Yeah, but which Earth is it? Is it Earth 1, Earth 2? Yeah. So they opened with a Shakespeare quote. That makes me think this movie is going to be really serious.
00:06:26
Speaker
This is a lot of the movie. Like, this guy talking. um This movie, Ishido Hondo is returning for ah as the director. Okay.
00:06:40
Speaker
Um... The same guy who played Godzilla is playing Godzilla in this one as well. But I think there was an American director who directed these scenes. I don't know. Because there's two versions of this on Letterboxd. I was just... The design of that spaceship...
00:07:01
Speaker
ah not not that like aesthetics can't have crossover you know because like cultures influence each other you know like they take inspiration from our sci-fi we're taking inspiration from their stuff vice versa but i'm like that spaceship looked too much like 50s b american b movies that i was just like ah that that doesn't like it looks like a fucking propeller hat but in space Yeah, let me try and see if I can figure out who might have directed the American there actually no monster fighting and it was just a guy in a room, like, presenting the facts like a documentarian, would almost, like...
00:07:45
Speaker
i would I would just rate it five stars just just for a big swing. like I'm like, oh, fuck, that's that's artistic. ah Thomas Montgomery apparently directed American Scenes. This might be the version we're watching, but the description is different. For the one that Thomas Montgomery and Honda directed, it says an underhanded pharmaceutical company goes to a remote tropical island.
00:08:13
Speaker
Whereas in the version that says it's just directed by Honda, it says that it's an um an advertising director. Oh, yeah, have a pharmaceutical company. boo yeah Yeah, it's the same thing. I don't know, man.
00:08:29
Speaker
I don't know what's going on with these two different versions on Letterboxd. evil pharmaceutical company. So, I mean, I've already been, you know, thinking in the back, you know, like in our first movie, it's like, well, the politics of Godzilla are kind of like, it's intrinsically tight. And I wanted to like track like what the message or things would be going throughout. But like, so if there's an evil pharmaceutical one, this is kind of like the Luigi Mangione of yeah Godzilla movies. Yeah.
00:08:58
Speaker
um This is where... It feels like this is just in here for American audiences to digest it a bit better. Well, that and then also it's like, how can we just give you the exposition in a way that won't cost us a ton of money? Like we just have this guy like tell you the information you need. He's talking about berries that placate a god on an island and is talking about this pharmaceutical company that's about to go go there for some reason. i don't i don't completely understand why they're going just yet.
00:09:35
Speaker
And they need berries to continue with the test. What's in those berries? I don't know. But they want this, the so-called God that lives on this island.
00:09:49
Speaker
i don't know if they've dropped the name of the island yet. Let me see if it's in the plot description. And would this god be considered a king by some, maybe? Yeah.
00:10:04
Speaker
Faroe Island. Oh, he just said it. Yeah. Small island called Faroe Island. That's funny that because I assume like maybe legally they can't say Skull Island. or like is that Or Skull Island, it's been so long since I saw the original King Kong. Was that even the name of the island in that movie? Or that they did they even not? They're just like, it's an island. Fuck you.
00:10:25
Speaker
I think it might be because it's Skull Island in the Peter Jackson version and in the Monsterverse version. It feels like they were taking that from somewhere. Yeah. yeah Maybe they took it from Son of Kong.
00:10:38
Speaker
Maybe. I haven't seen that. Have you? No, no. I heard it's pretty bad. i don't. I think Kong should be celibate. i don't like the idea of him having a son.
00:10:48
Speaker
It is kind of weird. well because then I have to be like, who did? Who's the mom? Yeah. Where is the mom? It's it's it's troubling. and book It's like thinking about Bowser Jr. I'm like, where the fuck did he come from?
00:11:04
Speaker
Yeah. The other Mario's were, ah you know. Wait, you're talking about Benny Safdie? Agamemnon himself. yeah He's having a good year at the box office.
00:11:18
Speaker
Okay, so I saw something crazy. I never read the Dune books, but apparently the Atreides family draws their lineage like back to like Greek myth times that they're like descendants of Agamemnon. So like Paul from Dune is like, if you go thousands of years enough away, like that he's descendant from Benisafdey. Wow, so Christopher Nolan is making prequel movies yeah to Denis Villeneuve's movies. That's interesting.
00:11:50
Speaker
This guy's got some type of wire. Oh, okay. I thought was just suicidal. I was like, what is happening?
00:12:00
Speaker
I mean, that is pretty suicidal. What is he, Tom Cruise? Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:07
Speaker
I mean, his friend is showing proper concern, but he was just goofing. Yeah. This is where the movies start to become a bit more satirical, less like horror. Right.
00:12:20
Speaker
Right. Which I'm fine with the the tone switching up, especially when, you know, we're three movies in, but there's going to be so many. So I'm fine with there being like a variance in tone. It's kind of how I feel like about other long running franchise, like say Bond or Batman.
00:12:41
Speaker
Like I kind of want especially after the Daniel Craig ones being so self-serious. I was like, What if we did get a little silly with it again? And then they announced Villeneuve was going to do the rebotes. Like, okay, so we're not we're not going silly. Yeah.
00:12:53
Speaker
Going even more serious than we've ever gone. I'm excited to see what Villeneuve does with that, but I do wish he was just spending his time not in another franchise, but I'm open.
00:13:07
Speaker
i think it'll

Franchise Ownership and Censorship

00:13:09
Speaker
be interesting. I want to see what he does, but I also don't trust the Amazon of it all because it's like... They own the franchise now. And it's like, yes, the broccolis were, it's just so funny that ah one of the longest franchises owned by a family named broccoli. Yeah. Named after a vegetable. Yeah. But they were, they were hands on to a certain degree of like, okay, this is what bond can't and can't be. But I feel like Amazon's idea of what bond can and can't be is just going to be purely like, like a financial thing in terms of like, how do we milk this the best way possible?
00:13:44
Speaker
yeah Back to Godzilla. franchise that has never been milked. You think that's him? that Yeah. You think that's him? and Driving the sub. Yeah, in the submarine. He has vehicles now. Kind of like Batman gets vehicles in all his movies. Godzilla should have a Godzilla chopper.
00:14:08
Speaker
He is in a very Superman-esque, like, fortress of solitude right now. That is where we left him at the end of the movie. for when We should mention, like, if you're watching these out of order, this is technically Godzilla 2, Roman numeral 2, that we've been following. Oh, yeah. He died definitively at the end of the first one.
00:14:28
Speaker
He turns into a skeleton. Yeah, and now this second Godzilla shows up and Godzilla raids again. It's weird that they are saying he raids again. This is technically this Godzilla's first time raiding. He's like, you're just giving them like communal raid credit. You're just like, i don't know, they're all the same to me. It's kind of racist. They dropped the idea of raiding in the title, but I'm curious to see if they talk about it in this movie.
00:14:55
Speaker
In terms of describing Godzilla's behavior, like... like How much rating is he getting up to? But they trapped Godzilla 2 in ice like seven years ago, I want to say, because this is 62 and 55 is when raids again came out. ah So I do like that we're picking up with Godzilla right where we left him.
00:15:19
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's cool that there is, like, I'm of two, like, ah ah at this point, like, in my life, like, I kind of, like, hand wave continuity stuff because, like, I kind of prefer franchises like Evil Dead or mad Max where they're like, yeah, there might be some connective tissue, but also, like, you know, like, shrugging, like, yeah, who cares? But I also do like when a movie can just be like, no, this is a...
00:15:45
Speaker
we're Because it seems pretty simple to just be like, yeah, he's under some ice now. like You just follow through with what you did to him in the last movie. Yeah, he spent almost a decade under this ice. And then it kind of, you know, what happens with him at the end of this movie, I feel like carries over into the next movie and...
00:16:08
Speaker
You know... It'll be interesting to see when at what point do they refresh that. you know like like When's the like the clear reboot line where we're not referencing like the same Godzilla at this point?
00:16:20
Speaker
It seems like they stopped trying as hard pretty quickly after this movie. and know i'm fine And I'm fine with that. like To me, that is just a very like kind of Bond thing where you're just like, yeah, don't don't try and explain like the the thing between... Godzilla's actually a codename.
00:16:41
Speaker
It's it's yeah different is a different lizard and they share codename. I do wonder at what point ah the reboot comes in and how they handle it if they do another origin story with Godzilla.
00:16:56
Speaker
Or if they kind of just refer back to it in a way where it's like, you can interpret that as being the first movie they're talking about, but it's also loose enough and like enough that it's like, oh, there may be like soft rebooting, like when that happened, like if they want to slide the time, like, yeah, will the timeline stay the same or is this going to be like a Simpsons sliding timeline where, you know, like Homer's perpetually like in his So yeah.
00:17:23
Speaker
that means he was a teenager like in the 90s, I guess, or something now. But like that's like with Godzilla, is Godzilla perpetually in his 30s? Yeah.
00:17:35
Speaker
Well, because they do start to do the villains over again. so yeah, at certain point, what do they do? Ghidorah three times or something like that? Three heads. Yeah.
00:17:50
Speaker
So... And the technology gets better. Like, we're going to get to a Ghidorah appearance in a couple of movies, but it's not the Ghidorah that I grew up with as a kid. And when I was, like, first watching these movies before we started doing these commentaries, I, like, didn't realize, like, oh, I was watching, I think, maybe a 90s Godzilla movie with that Ghidorah.
00:18:19
Speaker
Yeah, that's interesting to see like how the iconography of these like other monsters... change Because like we've already seen like subtle shifts in just Godzilla's look. And that's just from a practical standpoint of like, okay, they just made a different suit. But also, is it going to be the thing where like when you get to later...
00:18:37
Speaker
later halloween movies where they're like no we're trying to recreate the original mask or like we found the original mask somehow and we made it even dirtier to or we made it look burnt or something like is it really gonna do that with a godzilla suit like no we're going back to basics this is the original suit oh man i think it kind of gets like cuter at one point yeah more round and then it gets gnarlier ah I do like the look of the suit that we're seeing. Godzilla just seems old and tired. Maybe that's just the actor.
00:19:15
Speaker
This already has a bigger budget than raids again because raids again felt kind of lethargic and how they dealt with the threat. Like, I don't think we ever saw a single tank. It was just like a handful of army guys came out of like a plane. Yeah. And so like we're back to miniatures and like he's fucking shit up. That looks good. There's melting. Yeah, he's fucking burning these tanks with satanic breath. That rules.
00:19:38
Speaker
Yeah, these miniatures look really good. We should say this is the first Godzilla movie in color. Yeah. I mean, if I was in the 60s and they said like you had to get a color TV to watch new guys, I would do it. This is worth the upgrade. I'm like, this looks good.
00:19:55
Speaker
I guess this is something somebody pointed out. Godzilla came out of the ice with three toes instead of four. And going forward, he only has three toes.
00:20:06
Speaker
Also, maybe there was some lighting of the scales going on the other one, but it looked different in black and white. But that's more his classic like atomic breath look of like when he uses it, the scales like are like glowing blue.
00:20:20
Speaker
Yeah, and i over the course of each movie, they keep adding to it and refining it. It's really cool to see the evolution of Godzilla over these things.
00:20:31
Speaker
Please remain calm. There's a lot of people stuff in this movie, like people just explaining... because you're Kind of holding your hand through the movie. This is like direct address. These characters are just giving us the exposition. like They're barely like justifying why we're receiving it that way. Instead of just having like characters who are part of the story, these these are almost like...
00:20:56
Speaker
documentarians that are just telling you like here's here's what happened with the guy I mean these are characters that are like why I'm sick of Godzilla it's only three movies how can you be sick of him he's gotta find another monster to kill Godzilla cause it's hurting his pharmaceutical company Oh, he did say find me another monster. That is a funny like plot gimmick, though, where it's like Godzilla's fucking up my business. Can we can we get another monster in here? Yeah. Fuck up, Godzilla.
00:21:25
Speaker
You mentioned something. I don't know if you said something along lines like competent directing or just you talked about directing in general in the last movie because Honda didn't direct the last one.
00:21:38
Speaker
This already feels like it's just ah got a way more mature and competent director at the helm of it. Those sequences, even though I know the stunts guy said he directed them on his own without supervision, all of this just feels like a leap forward when it comes to the Godzilla stuff and the like framing and...
00:22:01
Speaker
blocking too compared to Godzilla raids again yeah not just more competent but just confident you know in terms of like it knowing its ability to execute things at this scale now this is Pharaoh Island yeah this is where it gets a little problematic I was gonna take a stab in the dark and say i don't know if these are real indigenous people like this especially we got a lot of brown face I mean going on and and I'm not excusing its practice but like if you do watch enough older movies it's like crazy how like it was just a suit they like what we gonna like especially like westerns like what we gonna cast like a real Mexican no just put a Humphrey Bogart put some smear some shit on his face and now he's Mexican
00:22:48
Speaker
Like, ah I don't, yeah, older movies did this all the time. Is there a specific movie you're referring to when you say that? I'm just trying to remember the name of it. Because it was like before Humphrey Bogart was like the guy. So it was like before Maltese Falcon. He was just like a random like Mexican bandit. and I didn't do any digging into the good, the bad and the ugly, but I watched that recently. That movie is phenomenal. I don't know if you've seen it. Oh, I love that movie. So watchable.
00:23:15
Speaker
um Is there any of that going on in that movie? I know that was directed in Italy. yeah Yeah. So I feel like there's a good chance that was happening.
00:23:27
Speaker
Yeah, a little. Like, one of the leads is Hispanic. Yeah, so I didn't look into it at all. i I suspended my disbelief, I guess. The movie got me, if there was any of that going on in there.
00:23:42
Speaker
But also spaghetti westerns, I feel like, not that it excuses any practices like that, but I'm like, one, they're being made by an Italian filmmaker, and then a lot of them aren't even filming in Italy. I think they're filming in Spain or something, some of them. like So, like I'm like, it's it's like so many levels of removal where I'm like, we're not even in reality right now. Yeah.
00:24:04
Speaker
like This is just crazy brown face. though It's like... it's It's bad. Yeah, it's very bad. Oh, man.
00:24:14
Speaker
It gets worse. I feel like they kind of start to course correct in the next movie, but you'll see well what we're in for. This might be the worst that it is, though.
00:24:26
Speaker
This is like Resident Evil 5 levels of racism.
00:24:32
Speaker
I don't know what that means. Is it because it takes place in Africa? Well, that on its own is fine, because like Resident Evil 4, you're just like killing everyone in this village in Spain.

Cultural Sensitivity in Films

00:24:44
Speaker
Although I've seen people make their like, oh, those are Europeans. Those aren't real people. But... uh yeah so five is africa and there's like an outbreak and you're fighting infected you know native africans but then they add a lore thing where they're like the virus makes you regress so like they're like putting on tribal shit and like you get to one point where you're on an island and they basically might have just called it ooga booga island because they're wearing like like ceremonial like like the just the most stereotypical spear chucking like ah savage African imagery where i was like you guys did not have to do this he gets to get a step too far yeah you didn't have to do this that's funny that's very well put
00:25:33
Speaker
Oh, man. This is almost like insulting to the way they're like holding what looks to be a toy up to them. These natives of Faroe Island.
00:25:49
Speaker
He's trying to get them to like get their chief, and they're trying to like figure out... I don't know, man. They're showing them a radio and calling it magic, and they were all scared by it.
00:26:00
Speaker
I mean, in the Peter Jackson one, ah Jack Black tries to give him a candy bar, but the joke is on him in that one because he's like underestimating the native people and like how simple they are. like This is almost frame of, like no, no, yeah, these people are fucking dumb. Yeah.
00:26:20
Speaker
The Peter Jackson one is dark. It's very well done, but that scared me as a kid. I wanted to leave the theater during the insect part. Like, I felt physically uncomfortable. Yeah. Because it's like an extended sequence of everyone just getting eviscerated by these, like, bugs are already gross to me. I don't like them. They should not leave. Get out of my house. Get a job. Get your own house.
00:26:44
Speaker
But then you make them big, and then they're eating me? No. Yeah. There's the ones where, like, the mouth comes out of the mouth, and they get...
00:26:54
Speaker
ah square everything They get the guy's head. Yeah, there's centipede-looking ones. I hate centipedes. I don't know if I hate a bug more than a centipede. And it's like, ah logistically, I know they're not harmful. If anything, they probably are good for like the bug ecosystem in terms of what they eat. But once I see them skittering around, I'm like, that's a demon. Get it away from me. yeah They're giving the these native people cigarettes.
00:27:23
Speaker
So they're giving them cancer. Yeah. There were little kids in brownface. We didn't talk about it. Maybe no one should talk about it. Just like Wim Wenders editing stuff out of his movie. ah Maybe they should do some work and edit this, reshoot it.
00:27:45
Speaker
yeah may Yeah, this is like a and an argument for directors going back and doing, like, go ahead, do some George Lucas shit, but not in terms of like, adding a rock where it wasn't before or someone steps on Jabba's tail. Like, you know, just like, i don't know, put actual indigenous people there or something. Yeah, reshoots are part of filmmaking. Just reshoot all of this. I'm sure the actors will come back.
00:28:14
Speaker
And I'm actually fine if it looks a little incongruous where you're like, this doesn't look like it was filmed at the same time as the rest the movie. I mean, the island is right by Japan. It could have just been like Asian Islanders. i don't know.
00:28:30
Speaker
Well, and clearly some of those actors are Japanese men in blackface. Yeah, I feel like ah most of them are, right? I've i've seen some that looked like maybe, like, could bit have been white people in blackface. Because I don't know, it seems like the the cast is kind of, like, somewhat integrated.
00:28:47
Speaker
but not integrated in terms of the representation here. I just meant terms of like, you know, like, oh, there is some American cast members. Yeah. We've seen the shot already.
00:28:59
Speaker
They use the shot earlier. Hey, saves money. Yeah. Film this street again.
00:29:08
Speaker
I think some of these characters ah start off in this movie and come back in other movies. I want to say she's in future movies. and Okay. Tragedy strikes. Oh, they're reading about the boat.
00:29:24
Speaker
118 souls. How did 17 people survive? 27? 27 people survived Godzilla in the ocean. The Arctic Ocean. Was Sully flying that or piloting that boat? Probably. Probably.
00:29:40
Speaker
That'd be a... Clint Eastwood, come out of retirement and make a ah Godzilla movie. They just keep hopping between these two people.
00:29:54
Speaker
Is the Japanese guy on the space station or is the American guy on the space station? This guy's on the space station, but it's confusing of where the Japanese guy also is because the way they cut it sometimes, it makes it look like, are you guys both on the space station? Yeah.
00:30:13
Speaker
Why do they keep handing it over to each other? What program is this? Oh, they bring out a dinosaur kid's book. Oh. p pediatric dinosaur book.
00:30:27
Speaker
It says here this movie was written by Kyle Ewers. yeah um It just becomes like an hour of them talking about the different diet they're going through the book. Yeah, all he did is point to a stegosaurus and he was like, yep, Godzilla's got spikes on his back too.
00:30:52
Speaker
it would be funny if they read kind of like we were assuming Godzilla was a dinosaur

Godzilla's Evolution and Legacy

00:30:56
Speaker
that got woken up, but it's like, what were they basing that on? They didn't, they didn't like do a DNA test. This would be like, yep, that's dinosaur. All right. Or confirm it.
00:31:07
Speaker
It's kind of like, there's a John Mulaney bit where he's like, we're really just taking it on faith that that's what dinosaurs look like, huh? Like, I know we have the skeletons and stuff, you know, from from the fossils, but how do we know that's the way they were assembled? Yeah.
00:31:24
Speaker
They were saying that Godzilla reawakening makes them need to reconsider everything they know on suspended animation. i mean, that does make sense because...
00:31:38
Speaker
the idea isn't that a dinosaur survived and then kept breeding. And then generations later you get Godzilla who it's just like, no, he was in the prehistoric era. He was just chilling down there. And then the bomb woke him up. So I think there would, especially like people with the means, like if that happened today, there'd be billionaires be like, Oh, well that's the cure for immortality. Or that's the, we need to figure out how he did that. Cause then I want to live forever. Like Godzilla. Yeah.
00:32:05
Speaker
Yeah, what plan did Godzilla have? How did he do it? was he Was he injecting the blood of younger Godzilla to stay alive longer? Yeah, they should just try to have a conversation with him.
00:32:18
Speaker
You know, much like ah a different movie that's out in theaters right now. See if the thing can talk before you start attacking it. think we're way past that point or what is the DC yeah oh man Nolan should do a Godzilla movie that'd be good he should i mean he already did Oppenheimer that's it's in the same universe yeah that was a universal movie that was a prequel so these guys are traveling through the jungle
00:32:55
Speaker
it's It is kind of just like, all right get to it. We know the movie's King Kong versus Godzilla. And so not only did they make the natives stupid, they were already like subservient. Like they were carrying their shit for them.
00:33:08
Speaker
Like, hey, you guys would make good servants. And these two are just like hucksters, kind of. Yeah. Like it's taking us a while to get there, but it doesn't even have like the character work or any of the like levity that the Peter Jackson one has at the beginning. That movie does build up and take like i I would have to rewatch and take a stopwatch to like when we get to Skull Island, actually see Kong. But I remember them building up to it. But in a way where you get to know the characters, like it makes it suspenseful. Like it kind of communicates the power of Kong. The fact that. that you don't just, you know, open a door and then he's there. So, ah yeah, but this doesn't have that same weight. And some of that's the tone of the movie, but then also just the way the island itself has just been pretty hokey. I mean, like, even if I'm to, you know, cover my blind myself to the racism, like um the the island stuff is not as strong here.
00:34:08
Speaker
Yeah. And we only got a little bit of Godzilla. They kind of played him up to be like this big problem, but he kind of just woke up and destroyed a boat.
00:34:19
Speaker
I'm guessing that boat must have had something to do with the pharmaceutical company. Yeah, because that immediately was like, the company was like, well, fuck Godzilla. We need another monster. and then now that like in that Or he's like a Lex Luthor and he's just mad that a Godzilla exists.
00:34:38
Speaker
I would like that. Godzilla should have a Lex Luthor, like a human arch nemesis who's just like a number one hater, who's like, fuck you, bro. Yeah.
00:34:51
Speaker
I think his arch nemesis is Ghidorah, or is it Mechagodzilla? To me... It's Ghidorah. Like, Mechagodzilla is kind of like the Metal Sonic of the... ah Have they even done Metal Sonic in any of the Sonic movies? I've only seen the first one. Not to my knowledge. I haven't seen any of them, except I saw a little bit of 3, and it reminded me a lot of Dragon Ball Z. mean, that makes it sound like something I would like. Yeah, I was kind of digging it. I was like, I have a feeling the other two aren't like this, though. It seemed like the Dragon Ball Z elements were a new addition to 3.
00:35:29
Speaker
Because one was bad, and then two, I turned off like 20 minutes in, Sonic and Tails get into a dance competition to Uptown Funk. Yeah. And this that's a movie that came out like 2022. So Uptown Funk had been around for a while. That's like an old song at that point.
00:35:50
Speaker
Yeah, they have, ah like, I think they even, Sonic turns into Gold Sonic, but the shadow of it all makes it have, like, a Goku-Vegeta dynamic, kind of. sounds good. Yeah, I think Sonic 3 had some juice to it.
00:36:04
Speaker
We just got a glimpse of the real octopus in this one. Fucking, the visual effects guy finally got his octopus after they shot it down in the first movie.
00:36:16
Speaker
Aw, shit. I think they worked with like somewhere between eight and ten octopuses, and the crew ate a good chunk of them after they were done filming.
00:36:28
Speaker
Old boy style. yeah that's That's funny, but then I got a pang of like sadness when I heard it. was like, oh, man, they yeah what they work so hard. Yeah, it is kind of unfortunate. You put them through the acting process, and they don't even get to be a part of SAG. You can't do that with other actors. Yeah. You're like, good job. um yeah unless Unless you're a co-worker of Armie Hammer. Whoa!
00:36:54
Speaker
Citizen Vigilante now streaming. I'm kidding. don't No one should watch that movie. i mean, i haven't seen it, but the clips look bad. The movie had like bad critic ratings. like Very low critic ratings, but I think decent audience ratings. I was like, what's wrong with people?
00:37:10
Speaker
Yeah, I think it was just right-wing people trying to be like, no, this is... we this movie's speaking to us. Yeah. Get your woke out of here. It's like, you guys are hyping up an Uwe Boll movie. You guys want to stand behind an Uwe Boll movie? A guy who makes, like, fake films for tax write-off purposes. Like, all those shitty, like, video game adaptations he did, like, He did, I'm trying to think of the games he did. He did the House of the Dead, Postal, Far cry ah Blood Rain or something. There was like a lot of different video games movies that he did. And they were literally just because he'd get a big fat tax money from from doing those. Like the the movie itself does not matter.
00:37:56
Speaker
Oh, geez. Not like the passion that goes into a Godzilla movie. Yeah. Real octopi. I do feel like there is passion but behind... I know you're, like... I'm i'm i'm i'm i'm performative and in my delivery of that that that, but I wasn't being, like, sarcastic. Because, like, I said that right as, like, the octopus, like... Was throwing people. Yeah, was throwing people and unfurling, and it looked cool. Yeah. Like, I... Like, I... This is... pat Like, I mean...
00:38:26
Speaker
Don't eat them after you're done with the scene, but, you know, i I think it's cool that they did this. Yeah, them destroying miniatures, too. You just put the octopus on and let it run rampant. Just, like, wreck the miniature, yeah. It's like, I feel like you watch this and you learn how to make a movie. You're like, oh, you, like, film the octopus doing all this and do, like, a shot, reverse shot with the people, but they're not actually there.
00:38:52
Speaker
Yeah, you see how they, like, imposed yeah them over that? It doesn't... it'll You'll see it more in the daylight scenes, especially when ah the two monsters fight, but it, like, doesn't look as good as it did in ah black and white.
00:39:08
Speaker
Well, I think some of it's the transition to color, and then also... If I'm remembering correctly, when we watching those black and white movies, like didn't the effects person direct some of those monster scenes in the first, in the original? like I feel like it makes makes a difference because I was reading about like the seven voyages of Sinbad and how like the Cyclops scenes in that was like the guy who did the effects directed those scenes because he kind of needed to be able to tell the actors where to be in regards to like the animation that he was doing. for the cyclops. I'm like, that makes sense because like it be it would look weird otherwise. Yeah.
00:39:48
Speaker
King Kong just showed up to fight the octopus. He's just like throwing shit. Yeah, he threw wooden sticks just in front of it Not like at him. It's not like he impaled him with like a spear. Oh, damn. He's just stomping him. Yeah. This is a guy in a suit.
00:40:05
Speaker
Do you think that's ah that's a fake octopus? At that point, that's a thing. But when he stomped it, I got a little nervous. I was like, did the actor just fucking curb stomp? They're like, we're going to eat it anyway. Fuck it. Yeah. That looked like a saran wrap bag when it was on his head. Now it's a real octopus again.
00:40:26
Speaker
That is cool. ah Throwing rocks at the octopus. It's crazy that regular size octopi. It's crazy anything that lives in the ocean. like That's basically like space to me. like Yeah.
00:40:40
Speaker
like look Like, look at that shit. That's the arrival alien. Yeah, exactly. Time is their language. Godzilla scared it away. At least he didn't stab it with a stick or something.
00:40:53
Speaker
Godzilla's like, get out of here. Get Amy Adams in a Godzilla movie. She's not doing anything right now. So i could they could get her in in in one. Cast her as Godzilla.
00:41:04
Speaker
Yeah. hell ah Or Godzilla's girlfriend. That's what she does. The Thankfuls Girlfriend. She gets to be Superman's girlfriend in a movie where the romance doesn't matter. So the have her be so of Godzilla's girlfriend in a movie where the romance doesn't matter.
00:41:19
Speaker
Godzilla just comes home and she's like reading or something.

Ethics and Humor in Monster Films

00:41:24
Speaker
So they grind the berries down, i guess, and King Kong comes to drink it, but one of them is poisoned or spiked with something to drug King Kong.
00:41:36
Speaker
They're roofing him. Yeah. They're fucking Cosby-ing King Kong. yeah It's fucked up. I know that's not good to laugh at, but... We have fun here.
00:41:49
Speaker
Uh...
00:41:51
Speaker
I mean, I keep trying to just, you know, when I watch older movies and there's like brown face or something, if I can usually kind of just immerse myself in the movie and decompartmentalize that part. But every time I see these guys or it's like a close up of them, I'm just taking it. It's like the Jon Hamm joke. it It feels like we're watching the 30 Rock Jon Hamm joke. Yeah. This seems like a parody.
00:42:16
Speaker
It does. It seems like it's making fun of the idea of brown face. I mean, this film is satirical. Are we just missing the layer commentary here? Yeah, maybe we're just stupid. This movie's actually a lot deeper than we thought.
00:42:30
Speaker
yeah King Kong, very easy to subdue when he's not in his own movie. What if they got the dose wrong and killed him? like Like, it seems hard to get an exact... It's not like there's other King Kongs you can test your theory out on to be like, all right, we need to get the dose right for for this giant ape.
00:42:53
Speaker
Also, why not dose Godzilla while you're at it? you know are Is this allowed? What kind of can of worms are you opening up? um Yeah, that's true.
00:43:05
Speaker
Mothra, I'm pretty sure, exists in this universe, too. Well, like, we haven't met her. Godzilla meets Mothra. We'll see her that in the next movie. But the Mothra movie's already out. And the way these movies kind of work is, I think that means just Mothra exists in this world. Like, the events of Rodan, I feel like, happened in this world already, too. And when we meet, like, Rodan eventually, I think that's picking up from the end of the Rodan movie.
00:43:33
Speaker
Okay. So what? I don't know. I feel like you don't need to go to Giant Monkey right away. Yeah, I mean, thinking of it that way, keeping track of when what happened was, it was like before off mic when we were trying to keep track of like when in the X-Men timeline would do, like, it got kind of start I start going cross-eyed. Yeah, like, which Wolverine yeah we going be watching?
00:44:05
Speaker
feel like it is just the Austin Powers joke of when he goes back and he's trying to keep track of the time paradox and then Basil just looks at the audience or he says the Austin for like best not to worry about that kind of thing and he looks at the audience he's like that same goes for you at home too.
00:44:27
Speaker
They're doing their little song and dance around King Kong. This feels offensive. Well, also, Kong's their god, and they just drugged him Like, i why are they cool with this?
00:44:41
Speaker
yeah you all They should be killing these guys. You also find, like, i don't know if this is the portrayal of Infant Island in the Mothra movies, but in the next movie, whenever they cut to Infant Island, it's just, again, like, island people bowing and worshipping something the whole time. I'm like, do they spend their day doing anything else? Yeah, so think about how that culture works. Like, do they, what do they do? Yeah, yeah.
00:45:07
Speaker
But at least on the Mothra Island, I'm like, maybe Mothra just provides everything for them so they don't have to work or do shit, so they just have time to just worship Mothra all day. Man, I would hate to live on the Mothra Island, though. I have to worship all day?
00:45:24
Speaker
That's almost just out of, like, you ain't got better shit to do. Like, there's no internet. Yeah, you don't have a Game Boy or anything. Those weren't invented yet. They can't watch the movie Godzilla.
00:45:35
Speaker
Right here is where they say, uh... King Kong's got a very ah big brain and Godzilla's got a brain the size of a marble. Hmm.
00:45:46
Speaker
They said it already, but that's why that guy was holding a marble. Okay. So Godzilla's stupid and King Kong is smart. They've established that. Okay. So that one guy is also on the space station. The space station of it all is like, like feels like a different movie.
00:46:06
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, I wonder if all of this stuff was just directed by the American director. They're like, do kind of what we did for King of the Monsters. ah The like alternative Gojira. Make it more palatable for American audiences. Because they they are just doing the exposition.
00:46:24
Speaker
Yeah, which we don't need. it's kind of just and they're recapping stuff that we kind of saw earlier. Well, oh, and doing hype. This is like like sports and now. I'm not a sports guy, but whenever I walk in on my parents doing it like the pregame stuff, we'll be talking about like, you know, the stats of the teams and stuff. And like, I feel like that that's what they were doing for Kong and Godzilla. They're like, all right. So Kong's been five and oh this season. He's actually way smarter, more strategic.
00:46:58
Speaker
Right now they've got Kong tied to the back of a boat on like a barge of his own. Imagery that we'll see in Godzilla versus Kong. i was just going say, they do reuse that. They reuse a lot of shit in the American stuff. It's like, oh, so you guys just didn't have ideas. And when you did have ideas, it was ah Godzilla or King Kong gets a glove. and what if What if there was an evil Kong? Yeah.
00:47:26
Speaker
It's just, oh my God. I like this businessman, the advertising guy for the pharmaceutical company. Oh, wait. ah This is like a Looney Tunes thing. He's leaning on a dynamite plunger. for That's attached to King Kong.
00:47:47
Speaker
It'll blow up his raft. ah Why is that so out in the open? Put a cage around it. Very easily triggered. Yeah. This guy also looks like he's in a cross between, he looks like he's dressed as like one of the Indiana Jones Nazis.
00:48:05
Speaker
Because he has like an ah like a red patch yeah on his thing too, so i'm like, do you belong to the Nazi party? Yeah, Nazi that's about to go jungle exploring.
00:48:20
Speaker
It is weird that Americans are reporting on this, but they're not helping at all. You don't see any, like, American government, like, come in. Yeah, we're just watching and keeping tabs from a space station, but we're not going to like, and there's multiple monsters involved at this point. and You think we would have a vested interest, especially like if we take contextually of like, okay, there is a Cold War between like Soviet Union, America, and there's giant monster stuff happening in Japan. Like, I don't know.
00:48:55
Speaker
America seemed like they would probably care that that's happening. That guy just passed out because they read a letter that said King Kong is a menace to Japan and must be returned immediately. and so he passed out. His plan is ruined.
00:49:11
Speaker
damn I wonder if he's going to return King Kong. I don't think he will. It'd be funny if he did and the movie's just over. You don't think this guy has good intentions? Hey, she dropped that food look good. It did. it looked really good. Can we... Someone pick that up. it's It was a five second rule. It was fine. Now it's ruined.
00:49:30
Speaker
Yeah, i haven't had dinner yet, so that did look very good.
00:49:39
Speaker
um' I'm really distracted by the food she wasted. Yeah.
00:49:48
Speaker
Is there something wrong? Godzilla. Yeah, kid. to Tell us something new. That's old news. I mean, that was also a thing in raids again ah where it was like, you guys don't seem too worried about Godzilla. Yeah. Like the last time he came, you fucking wrecked shit. Yeah. Yeah.
00:50:08
Speaker
I guess this time he just destroyed a boat and then we haven't seen him do other destruction. It was mostly like military targets he was fucking up.
00:50:26
Speaker
They're on a train, a classic train. That looks pretty good. That's a nice train miniature. The little people on the sides. Yeah, the silhouettes of the passengers. Yeah. Yeah.
00:50:40
Speaker
That was fun. um Yeah, we've got a decent amount of vehicle stuff in in this. And, like, you know, miniatures, but, there were you know, some real Jeep driving there. we really They're really leaning in on these the space station recaps.
00:50:57
Speaker
Yeah. Just telling us everything. Oh, United Nations. Okay. They're giving their support. Well, that is interesting because these movies we rarely... We're like, yeah, does anyone else care? so like, the United Nations is, like, sending weapons. Yeah, but was that a Soviet flag on that car?
00:51:19
Speaker
The Soviets are helping? I mean, because it really should just be like almost in Watchmen logic where it's like if there was an alien attack, that would put aside all our differences to like band together to like stand against that threat. If there was giant monsters, you would think other countries would be like, guys,
00:51:39
Speaker
this is silly. We don't need to fight right now. Like there's a, there's like a fucking Godzilla happening. Yeah. It kind of took them about a decade for the rest of the world to be like, okay, he's back a third time. all right, we'll help. Yeah. Oh, he's walking.
00:51:58
Speaker
That's a good looking suit. Yeah. He looks better than in the last one. Yeah. There's something about like the angle of his like shape of his face that I find compelling.
00:52:10
Speaker
I don't know if he'll ever look as good as the first one. Well, not ever, but in this run of movies. know what you mean. And just the way that movie is shot makes him look so good. Yeah. Like, it's just almost like fetishizing him the way they shot him in the original. Oh, yeah. this guy was. yeah. Walk that way. Yeah.
00:52:35
Speaker
well ah swear but You're walking that direction now. Okay, these people are panicking and they're abandoning the train, which is good because he's probably- Usually they just stay in the train. Yeah, and wait for him to shake a train car over his mouth. And then they kind of just tumble out.
00:52:56
Speaker
They're evacuating the buses. This looks like it was shot in daylight and they kind of just like dimmed the image maybe. A little bit, but I do like like the scale of the set piece and like the logistics of the idea of, like yeah, like all these people are evacuating, and what does that take? You need like vehicles to get them out of here. And like there is a tension to... like Because he's big, he's just slowly clomping towards... Like, I did make a Michael Myers comparison terms of the costuming before, but I'm like, Godzilla kind of is the Michael Myers of, like, kaiju. He's just, like, he's not running ever. Like, he doesn't yeah have to
00:53:35
Speaker
He's just constantly walking, and he's just unrelenting. You can never quite kill him. unless Yeah, you can't kill him. You can drop some ice over him. And he keeps going after Laurie Strode. ha ha!
00:53:51
Speaker
And you're like, you're like, maybe there's a thing where you're like it. She reminds Godzilla of his sister that he killed when he was young. But you're like, I'm not sure. And then other movies, they make it like, oh, no, that is Laurie is Godzilla's sister. And then he goes after his niece for a little bit. Yeah, he's kind of the Michael Myers of Kaijus.
00:54:15
Speaker
Trains getting destroyed.
00:54:19
Speaker
Man, if there's a Michael Myers of Kaijus, I hope there's a Corey Cunningham Kaiju. I don't even know. I'm i'm losing the metaphor of what that would actually be.
00:54:30
Speaker
Baby Godzilla. Kid Godzilla. Well, it would have to be like almost like a person that gets turned into Godzilla. Matthew Broderick. He should have been turned. That movie should have ended with him becoming a Godzilla and fighting the baby Godzillas. I wonder if they had sequel plans. Man, I'm so excited to talk about that movie. I haven't seen it since I was a kid.
00:54:52
Speaker
oh man. That's going to be a laugh riot, I'm thinking. Yeah, it's going to be ridiculous. feel It's going to be the same as this, where we're like, a lot of people stop.
00:55:02
Speaker
ah
00:55:05
Speaker
Yeah, but at least the people stuff in that movie, I just remember being so absurd. I mean, yeah, Roland Emmerich movies are aggressively dumb, but you like know what you're getting with them. Yeah.
00:55:17
Speaker
This lady's passed out in the water. oh no. Come on, lady. Come on. There's a Godzilla coming. Don't take a nap there. That's the worst place to take a rest. Yeah. After taking a bath in the water, too. Yeah.
00:55:32
Speaker
Man, Godzilla does look so cool. They got the size really well. They got it nailed down in this one. it Yeah, just the his relation to the environment looks great, like in terms of the the the mountains and those phone lines. I mean, just this director just knows how to shoot Godzilla better.
00:55:53
Speaker
Yeah. and We haven't even gotten to any monster fighting. We're back to King Kong on his bar. Kong is still tied up in a Looney Tunes raft where there's like dynamite yeah all around him.
00:56:06
Speaker
I like that the boat was shot in like a bathtub whenever it cuts to like the waves. feel like he should be able to break three of like those ropes look so tiny compared to the rest of him. He's drugged though.
00:56:21
Speaker
Yeah, but what's what's Kong's metabolism like? You know how they say like like yeah ah Captain America can't get drunk because it just like filters out of his body so quickly. I'm like, how can you even drug Kong? like You need to have like all the drugs.
00:56:38
Speaker
Remember when he fought Godzilla? When Kong fight got set up? Yeah. It hasn't happened yet. I meant in the American version. It hasn't happened. was like, I thought thought you were doing a Tenet bit. It hasn't happened yet. Yeah, we're in two different temporalities right now. temporal Pinson. Oh, wait, no, that's fucking Tenet.
00:56:59
Speaker
Is Robert Pinson in this one? Yeah. i sir Oh, man. He's trying to blow up King Kong. Don't do that. Oh, wow.
00:57:12
Speaker
We low-key should bring back like dynamite plungers. Yeah. The businessman accidentally plunged the dynamite. Oh, but it didn't detonate, they just like fucking shoot it.
00:57:24
Speaker
Shoot the detonators. I like what that these guys are wearing like Hawaiian get-ups. Yeah. I like their look. These two goofballs. They just strolled in from a Hawaii 5-0 or something. Yeah.
00:57:41
Speaker
Oh, wow.
00:57:45
Speaker
They blew up his barge. So was the idea where they're like, oh, this was a bad idea. Abort the King Kong thing, but hit the blow up Kong button. And that's why they blew him up. Yeah, because he woke up. Well, first they need to bring him back. But the business guy, the advertising pharmaceutical guys and on board with it. And then when he woke up, they're like, fuck, we need really need to abort this. Let's just kill him. I did like that initial shot of him coming out of the ocean. Now, as the suit gets wetter and you get close up, I'm like, it looks like a suit that's sagging from being wet. But when he first came out of the water, it looked kind of scary. Yeah. You could kind of see the eyes through the holes when it was wet a little bit. I don't mind the suit in this one. It got a lot of criticism, especially, I feel like, at the time from American audiences.
00:58:38
Speaker
I feel like it's just one, like, yeah, if you're watching the original King Kong and then you're watching this, you're just like, well, that was, so it's a guy in a suit now instead of like this, this awesome animation from, from the original movie, like that just changed your expectation. But then also Godzilla suit is just way cooler in this. So like if you do a side by side, then it doesn't look great, but I don't think it's terrible.
00:59:06
Speaker
you I don't think Willis O'Brien actually had anything to do with any of the effects on this movie, which is interesting because he's like the original writer and got this thing off the ground. But the King Kong, it's another Japanese stunt performer in the King Kong suit. And I had heard, I don't know if this is completely true, but I heard Honda wasn't happy with the performer who was in the King Kong suit because he asked him to study monkey movements and I guess he didn't. Well, we could see in that shot where he was just like like he almost seemed like he was trying to do like how monkeys or ring tanks like swing their arms. But it almost looked like the performer started giving up. Like, like, look, look at his motions that he was doing. Yeah, it looked like fucking Samson and 28 weeks later or 28 years later, the bone temple but when he's like pumping his chest. Yeah. Samson did it better.
01:00:00
Speaker
and And the fact that the Godzilla walk has just already been perfected to a science. so like And then you cut to Kagu-ing that. Yeah, dancing as he's walking.
01:00:11
Speaker
He's walking like fucking Squidward.
01:00:15
Speaker
What's with that chest pumping? It's like he's can't he can't half decide between like the arms swinging and the chest pump, so he's like doing both. The arm swinging is terrible.
01:00:27
Speaker
I do like that they're just across the hill. Godzilla, you don't need to blow up that helicopter. like that they're just intimidating. They're just emoting at each other. yeah they're like battle dancing across from each other.
01:00:40
Speaker
um The guy who played King Kong would come back as Ghidorah a couple movies from now. Oh, interesting. And then I think Ghidorah is his last time in these Godzilla movies. Okay, well, we'll pay close attention to his Ghidorah suit performance and see if he's swinging his arms as Ghidorah. There's a lot of swinging with Ghidorah. You'll see. Ghidorah doesn't have arms, but he has three heads. I also like that these guys are watching the battle, and they were kind of just casually placing bets on, like, like I think Godzilla's going fucking stomp him. Which feels very real, because like when they announced the recent Godzilla v. Kong, I was just like, well, that's not even a fight. It's just like, what do you mean? like
01:01:24
Speaker
One of them could shoot lasers out of his mouth. Godzilla, Godzilla, burn King Kong. I was about to say, yes, I'm glad that we like got just get a fight for the rest of the movie. But I do think it drops the fight for a little bit and goes back. I think he's about to walk away. Yeah. It's like, oh, man, you burn me. What the fuck?
01:01:46
Speaker
I thought we were having a dance off. Yeah, it just, yeah. Kong has retreated. Godzilla. Yes, we understand. They are sports commentators because this is like halftime where they're like checking in. They're like, yeah, so Godzilla has the lead at halftime. Yeah, now a performance from Rana and Kendrick Lamar.
01:02:10
Speaker
Let's watch Kendrick Lamar call Drake a pedophile again. It was pretty fun. The Super Bowl halftime show? Yeah. Oh, man.
01:02:21
Speaker
My face hurts from smiling so much, laughing so much. ah These Godzilla commentaries are fun. Yeah, they brought they're fun. I mean, these are fun movies. Yeah, they're wacky. More cool miniatures. These just look like toys with sand in the back.
01:02:38
Speaker
I just like the detail behind it, though. They didn't need to do this, but they did for us. Yeah, yeah. They even painted like all the Japanese symbols on the sides. like This is detailed. There was a little guy in one of those things.
01:02:54
Speaker
They did it for us when they could have just cut to a space station and had ah an announcer be like, and then they shoveled the sand. Yeah.
01:03:06
Speaker
Man, yeah, like how they had miniature people looking and then it cut to a different angle and it was real people looking down the hill. Just movies, man. It's like magic. Yeah, these movies do feel kind of like magic.
01:03:20
Speaker
These Godzilla movies.
01:03:26
Speaker
Sam Raimi should do a kaiju movie. Someone who actually is basically a magician turned filmmaker, does magic tricks in camera.
01:03:36
Speaker
like fucking That seems like a slam dunk. I haven't seen Colossal with Anne Hathaway, but I really want to. I'm wondering if you could do something like that. I want to see Colossal, and it's weird that I haven't, considering that director's done... It's Nacho. he's done one of my favorite movies of all time. Mr. Time Crime. Mr. Time Crime himself. Mr. Time Crime. Bring me a drink.
01:04:03
Speaker
Bring me some time. but
01:04:10
Speaker
Yeah. right and We should both make that required viewing. ah Colossal, yeah. Yeah. Time Crimes, it seems like it's been a special movie for you for a very long time. I'm on a 10-year anniversary relationship with Time Crimes this year. I got into it... ah I'm pretty sure I bought it in 2016, like, when I was first, like, getting big into movies, because the film cast, like, always talked about Time Crimes in their, like, earlier days, and I went back and listened to those episodes, and... Yeah, I want to say...
01:04:45
Speaker
movie's been in my life 10 years. I should have like a party for it. we Let's have time crimes party. Hell yeah. We go back in time and commit crimes.
01:04:57
Speaker
I mean, I've got the 4K of time crimes. We could do a commentary. i would fucking love to do that. Yeah. I do like that when we did Horizon on These Guys Got Juice feed that most of that episode just turned into time crimes. Like the back half, we were like, okay, anyway, let's talk about a good movie. Yeah, for almost an hour. That's a great under-listened to episode of These Guys Got Juice. People just kind of breezed by we've been watching. Well, think the Horizon of it all scares people away because they're like...
01:05:30
Speaker
Not watching this Kevin Costner thing. Is this conservative podcast? Yeah. Well, it's especially funny now because it's like we're never seeing those other parts. I mean, part two has been filmed and finished and I think screened in places, but i don't think it's ever going to be released. Yeah, we're never going to conclude that episode. See how it ends. Yeah.
01:05:54
Speaker
Costner should make a Godzilla movie. just going name like e creatives in Hollywood and be like, they should make a Godzilla movie. He should just be in a Godzilla movie. I think he should be Godzilla's dad. And there's like a flashback where there's like a tornado and Godzilla can save him. But then Costner puts his hand up and like shakes his head because he doesn't want Godzilla to use his powers in public for people to know that he's Godzilla. Yeah.
01:06:22
Speaker
We did kind of talk over a little bit of what was happening, but it seemed like another failed attempt to kill Godzilla. They, like, blew up.
01:06:32
Speaker
I think they essentially tried to bury him in a hole. They tried to pull a phantasm Which isn't a terrible idea because they're like, the last time we stopped him, we buried him in ice.
01:06:44
Speaker
Can we just dig a hole? who Yeah, what about a different element? Let's just keep trying the elements. We already tried water. we killed him in water. we I would say fire. Ice is basically water, too. i would say fire because fire seems like... I'm like, he breathes fire. Maybe let's not just do fire. i don't know. I mean, the fire would be the last-ditch effort. Be like, okay, well, i don't know. Does fire do anything? Yeah, they're going to do wind after this.
01:07:13
Speaker
Trap them in a wind tunnel. Yeah. Which, I mean, the next movie is Mothra versus Godzilla, so wind might come into play. i can't wait till we get some Mothra. If they don't stop Godzilla, ten million that guarantees 10 million people certain death. heard 11 million people saw this movie in theaters in Japan, so that's almost the whole audience that saw this movie in theaters. We're going to die. Like, that was the stakes. Yeah. Yeah.
01:07:42
Speaker
Stakes could not be higher.
01:07:47
Speaker
I do like that. i like the military stuff in these movies. I find it pretty riveting. i i And it makes me appreciate how much I missed it in raids because because of like the budget and scale of that movie. We wasted a lot of time on just no-name civilians and like the military presence was not really felt.
01:08:09
Speaker
Which then just decreases... the threat of God because like it has to kind of be proportional to the threat of Godzilla like if the military is not taking it seriously then I'm like why do I care yeah and speaking of like elements they're establishing that Godzilla hates electricity that is because I'm like okay well if he was a Pokemon his type would probably just be dragon and dragons weak to ice in he's a water dragon
01:08:40
Speaker
Okay, so electricity, yeah. Water, water dragon, electricity, ice. ah What else are dragons? Dragon Other dragons, right? Yeah. I think it's just, yeah, other dragons, ice, and fairies.
01:08:57
Speaker
oo King Kong's coming. I like how they're like, King Kong, not a problem. All their attention is focusing on Godzilla as King Kong is just running through cities, destroying. Look at that how he walks. i'm not I'm not worried about that, dude.
01:09:11
Speaker
I do like this scene of people fleeing. They're just shoving kids through the windows of the trains and shoving their luggage through. I mean, this is good evacuation shit. it shows it shows the urgency because this is like you just got you don't have time to like methodically like like, oh, what am I taking? it Just grab whatever's around you and get the fuck out of there. Yeah, this is where Honda really cooks at, like you said, the urgency, just how, like the devastation. he's just good at scale, because like, look at all these extras he has to work. And they could have shot this on like two blocks, maybe.
01:09:47
Speaker
We had nothing of that scale in Raids Again. like Raids Again felt so quaint and small. You see the blue sheen that's around them Yeah, this is... I'm liking this more now on this rewatch. I gave this a pretty low rating. I gave it a 2.5.
01:10:04
Speaker
I rated it lower than Raids, actually, but I'm liking this more on this rewatch.

Monster Mythology and Capabilities

01:10:10
Speaker
You're just chomping on it? They find King Kong gets energy from electricity, as we all know about King Kong. It's it's like one of his things, yeah. Yeah, he's kind of like Jamie Foxx in the Spider-Man. Ha!
01:10:24
Speaker
It fixes his teeth. Yeah. It gives him a better suit. Ha!
01:10:33
Speaker
i mean it That is funny in No Way Home that he's just straight up just a different guy, basically. He's just like like, I like this universe. You're like, okay, so how do you have a new body? I look better in this one. This is something. I remember this fight pretty well from watching it as a kid.
01:10:51
Speaker
um i think I just caught it on TV one time and it really stuck with me. But King Kong biting the electrical wires... and it giving him powers. When I watched that, it felt like I just had this like rush of memories as a kid. And I was like, oh yeah, I remember this vividly.
01:11:09
Speaker
Like, but man, I like all of this discussion of, like, we were already talking about the stakes, but the fact that they're talking about, like, the atom bomb's ready and we we don't want to use it, but we fucking will, like like, if we're forced to, like, which is a crazy idea because it's like... And they bring it up a lot.
01:11:32
Speaker
The atom bomb is what started this. So, like, it woke up Godzilla, and you're like, well... go get you in, we'll go get you out. We gotta fucking do it. But it's just interesting to think about like where this franchise goes in terms of relation to the bomb. Because by the time you get to King of Monsters, like they drop a nuke to like heal him or something, right? It's like nuclear energy like heals Godzilla.
01:11:55
Speaker
Yeah. So so it's like instead of being a destructive force, it's like, no, this is good. It's that's ridiculous. Why does it give him powers? It should always be poisonous to everything. Oh, man. King Kong's getting the fucking train now. He's stealing fucking Godzilla's. People are just pouring out of it. Oh, man. These people are dying if they're at eye level of King Kong and falling out of the train.
01:12:20
Speaker
Although I like how he's kind of just studying it because when Godzilla does it, it does seem like he's got a bag of snacks and he's just like, on, going to fucking empty this shit. But King Kong's like, ooh, I love miniatures. He's like, the detail here impressive.
01:12:34
Speaker
got a doll in his hands now
01:12:39
Speaker
All right, that's an actual woman, but I feel like there are some shots where it's a doll, and it makes me want to go back and re-watch the original King Kong to see how they filmed those. I feel like they had an actual woman in his hands somehow. And they have captured a key element of Kong from the original movie, which is...
01:12:58
Speaker
Loves the ladies. He does. He's a ladies man. Sony. Shout out to Sony. Been around since, uh, 63. Sony's doing good right there and good shape with PlayStation everything.
01:13:11
Speaker
ah Yeah. They're, they're doing great. Yeah. Uh, shout out Sony universe. Spider-Man character. Yeah. They got a Spider-Man movie coming out soon. Yeah. That's there. just there. The Sony sign from a different angle. Wait, wait a minute.
01:13:27
Speaker
I thought he already walked past that. There's another one. They're really pushing aggressively. These tanks look good. This set that King Kong's walking around on looks really detailed. His movement's much better now, maybe just because he's holding a lady so he can't do the arm waving. actor's a real props man. You've got to give him some something to work with. Yeah, he cooks when he's got a prop.
01:13:53
Speaker
That's what they always say about him. He cut scene, he just has a rubber chicken. It is just like a crazy toy with like just ridiculous hair in his hand.
01:14:05
Speaker
Oh, that's his sister? Shit, bro. What are the chances? Well, say hi to your new brother-in-law because they're married.
01:14:18
Speaker
i like the looking through the binoculars and the light shining on King Kong's face. They do a good job, again, with scale.
01:14:27
Speaker
Those miniatures look nice. want to be inappropriate, from but from certain angles, like the lower angles, it looks like Kong has big naturals. The two things about King Kong.
01:14:39
Speaker
He likes the ladies. And he climbs on top of skyscrapers. He goes to the top of buildings. Are they going to send a plane after him like that? like i mean... But also in a movie where he fights Godzilla, you'd be like, well, a plane plane's firing at him will not kill him.
01:15:00
Speaker
What can you explode from above?
01:15:06
Speaker
Oh, they're going to roofie him again, but from plane. Wow. They just love drugging people. This guy's problematic. It's problematic, but at the same time, I like that they're like trying to find solutions of, because they did bring up the like the bombs on the table, so I like that they're trying to be like, well, what other options do we have? They're not just like, drop it. Yeah.
01:15:32
Speaker
I do like that he's almost in like a police standout. It's kind of like a smaller scale version of what happened in New York. Yeah, because it's like we don't, there's no skyscrapers that are as tall as the Empire State Building and also just the mood of it because he's yeah he's just chilling there. It's kind like dog day afternoon a little bit. that That's the mood. Annika! Annika!
01:15:56
Speaker
Annika!
01:16:02
Speaker
Should be, yeah, they should send in a negotiator and then Kong. Pacino should play Kong. That sounds good. Yeah, current Pacino or dog day afternoon Pacino. I kind of want 70s energy Pacino. Yeah. Or even heat Pacino. that'd be good.
01:16:20
Speaker
Oh, man, I rewatched The Insider a couple months ago. That's a good Pacino. as Everyone's on fire in that movie. That one scene during the deposition where I'm forgetting the actor's name. I think it's maybe Bruce McGill who plays the Southern lawyer. He's like, what? That smoke off your face. yeah Fucking Tobolowsky. He's really good in his one big scene.
01:16:47
Speaker
Oh, this is... kind this What's going on They're playing his tribe music. And even though it's just like him beating the drums, I feel like if we turned the music up, it would be full-on like tribal song happening. Yeah, and it's like we're not seeing any of the tribesmen now, but the fact that this is like... ah it It seems like it's working. Yeah.
01:17:14
Speaker
It's lulling him. Yeah, you can hear somehow it's conjuring the spirits of the tribes. who
01:17:21
Speaker
Kong, don't fall for this, bro. This is makes me like it makes, you know, this is stuff in the movie I don't like. We've been complimenting it for for a while.
01:17:31
Speaker
but then it also makes me respect Kong less from like you fool. You're falling for this. Like, keep your eye on the prize, man. Oh, he's getting sleepy. Sun's getting real low, buddy. Yeah, his sun's getting low. Why did these two need a drum, but they could project all the other music through speakers? Why can't they also project the drums?
01:17:56
Speaker
No, he can tell k can tell a difference between a recording and real drums. He'd be like, not the other parts of the of the song, but if he hears like fake drums of like, nah, ain't buying it.
01:18:09
Speaker
King Kong sat down and broke a miniature. There's some other animals or not like monsters sitting in future Godzilla movies that gets kind of ridiculous.
01:18:20
Speaker
Yeah, it is an absurd like visual to see, but then i also... It makes sense for Kong. I like seeing them like stretch the limits of the mobility for these creatures. Because because then you're you're thinking of them not and just in the context of them fighting other monsters. You're like, well, it's a living thing. It would have other stances and things it would do. Mm-hmm.
01:18:43
Speaker
All of that just to get the girl. Where's Godzilla? how What is he doing? Did he just stop? That was risky because what if while he was falling asleep, either his group his grip lessened and he dropped her from a height and then she just splats, or and the opposite, he like as he's falling asleep, he tightens his grip and then she's just fucking crushed. Mm-hmm.
01:19:12
Speaker
You never know. You never know. I do like that they took a moment to just basically focus on the two things King Kong likes the most. but Yeah, they're like, you you're doing a list of like, what does Kong have to do? And it was just like...
01:19:27
Speaker
I like the energy of the hostage standoff. I didn't like that Bongo tribal music resolved it, but... I mean, similar to the Dog Day Afternoon resolution, too, in theme with that.

Continuity and Casting in Monster Films

01:19:41
Speaker
ah I feel like it worked a lot better than when Kong Skull Island, they take a moment for him and Brie Larson to, like, touch, and that's their acknowledgement to Kong, like, in Well, because in that movie, I'm like, you're just doing that because it's a Kong movie and you know you need to do this. But I'm like... This felt very in line with his New York behavior. Right. Where he's like, ooh, a woman?
01:20:04
Speaker
and Let me just hold on to that. And Kong Skull Island's its own continuity. So it's like, you didn't have to do the like Kong fucking loves blondes thing. like Yeah. ah and And the fact Brie Larson and Hiddleston, like, if we're going to watch all the Monsterverse movies, we can get to it. But, like, I'm like, those characters, from my recollection, she like, should not be in the movie.
01:20:26
Speaker
Yeah. It's like they just needed some hot white people to put in there. Would we do Skull Island or would we save that for a potential Kong commentary thing? guess save it for Kong because that is, yeah, there is no God. But then that's the end of our King Kong thing is we end on Skull Island. Well, I guess that's not a bad ending.
01:20:45
Speaker
i' like to. Of the Monsterverse, that's the only one that I will like put any effort into defending. i've got I've got to give the Gareth Edwards one another shot. I thought it was okay. I like the direction and the scale and the visuals. It's just like the human stuff really... it's Aaron Taylor Johnson is... I've turned around on him, but like back then i was just like, man, this guy is non-presence.
01:21:10
Speaker
It was really Craven that made me realize that he was a star, but before that, it was really Rocky. See, it's the opposite for me, where I haven't had much of a problem with Aaron Taylor Johnson, but I feel like, as of lately, I've kind of been... i don't know. I think I said it on Nosferatu recording, but it's like I feel like I can kind of see him acting a little bit.
01:21:34
Speaker
I get what you mean, but then also in that... movie I feel like that character's performative. So it's like hard to tell where the line, because he's very hammy. He's very hammy actor. I'd say because even in 28 years later, his character's kind of hamming it up. But then you think about the character where you're like, well, there is a very performative part of this guy where it's like performative masculinity that he's doing. Yeah.
01:22:00
Speaker
um Oh, yeah, they're going to fly King Kong out of here on a big balloon. i like how wacky just all their solutions are. Put him to sleep with tribal music, drug him fly him away with a balloon.
01:22:14
Speaker
So I feel like as we go through all these movies, but just seeing this one, I'm like, so the American Godzilla v. Kong, really their only idea was the hollow earth shit, right? Like so much of this stuff is just like borrowing from from these other movies. But I'm like, your only thing was like ah maybe the dumbest conspiracy theory to put into your movie. And like, what if that was real? What the earth was fucking hollow?
01:22:43
Speaker
Yeah. They might as well have just done Flat Earth. What if the MonsterVerse took place on Flat Earth?
01:22:53
Speaker
Is Flat Earth inside of Earth? No, you just zoom out and it's just like board. And then so when they fight Mechagodzilla at the end, he just pushes them off the edge. And he just falls into space.
01:23:07
Speaker
I like the imagery of King Kong being straddled by a bunch of balloons. and And the fact that how immobile he is, because his like leg is up. like Yeah, it's not really like in an elegant looking way. And they just expect this to be secure all the way like across all of these cities, all the way to Faroe Island. I mean, their first time transporting him went horribly. Yeah. And if anything, there's more holes in this plan. Yeah, but what if he lands on some something? Yeah.
01:23:39
Speaker
I mean, but transport by balloon just seems so iffy. Yeah. I guess the electrical lines did kind of stop Godzilla. They scared him away with electricity. he Well, he's not an electric type like Kong, so, you know, fucked him up.
01:23:57
Speaker
Yeah, Kong's, like, fighting electric. It wasn't even, like, a slow eye open. I like that his eyes kind of just, he was just I'm up, bro.
01:24:08
Speaker
Yeah, he's like, all right, sleep awake. I mean, sometimes it is like that. Godzilla's just kind of walking somewhere. to me but It's weird because like in kind there's no activity that he seems to be doing.
01:24:26
Speaker
he kind of just like staring at the side of a mountain. King Kong's like, what the fuck? You brought me back to this guy? It's just like, now he's got to fight for his own survival. Why would you do that for him to him?
01:24:39
Speaker
ah I mean, that is fun. i do like the deployment of like, all right, fucking let's just airdrop him in. And then he just rolls into them. Did they both just take a tumble?
01:24:53
Speaker
Yeah, I'm thinking about that from a stunt standpoint. I'm like, so they just had him launch himself at the other guy? I feel like... um i think about Godzilla's spikes. Like, how does that affect Godzilla's back?
01:25:08
Speaker
Right, if he falls on his back, is he, like, kind of impaling himself? But then other movies, like, once we get, like, fancier effects, we see them, they can, like, retract or extend. So that makes me wonder, like...
01:25:22
Speaker
Can he like just pull them back into his back? Yeah. It's like Wolverine's claws. There's a little bit of the monkey walk. that look You can see his eyes a little bit. They look better than the arms swinging before. he's he's i mean, um i i'm assuming like I'm acting like they shot this film chronologically, but I'm like, he's getting into the role more as it goes on. That was the final shot that he did. He finally nailed it. I how King Kong is hiding. Godzilla's like, where'd he go? Just no hunting ability.
01:25:56
Speaker
I mean, I feel like he should at least have instinct or something. Some type of senses, maybe. Or just smell. Like, do they have noses? like Yeah.
01:26:08
Speaker
Like, just basic animal sense. Godzilla's like, no, not the tail. Kind of reminds me of how in Disclosure Day they hide from the FBI, but they're like five feet away and like kind of behind ah ah like a rock. And if they just turn, they would see them hiding there.
01:26:26
Speaker
Godzilla really took a rock from King Kong and it didn't do much.
01:26:33
Speaker
That's the thing with Godzilla where it's like he's indestructible other than like the times he's not, like the O-bomb, but like... It's like, how do you damage him?
01:26:45
Speaker
Yeah. This is the second ever monster fight, I think. I don't know if they've actually done one since Anguirus. Is that the name of the Ankylosaurus in the last one?
01:27:00
Speaker
Did he have a name? i thought it was just the Ankylosaurus. They gave it a name. It was like Anguirus or something like that. King Kong is a little smoky because he burned. They said can't tell who's winning. i mean, if you watch them, they're tumbling. It's harder to tell. But for me watching the movie, I'm like, I think Godzilla's winning. Like, it seems... Whenever they're tumbling, though, I'm like, okay, King Kong's winning. Well, because close quarters definitely seems like, I mean, a monkey can fucking swing on you, you know? So, like, yeah it's Godzilla's got range. He seems like he can't get up. It's like flipping a turtle over.
01:27:41
Speaker
oh he just, like, fucking into the rocks. Fucking, what the hell, Kong? You're supposed to be the smart one. Now he's unconscious.
01:27:52
Speaker
They should have animated little birds flying around his head like when he hit his head on the rock. Yeah. The little stars. Yeah, they had Looney Tunes shit with the like dynamite, so why not?
01:28:05
Speaker
In the American one, King Kong kind of, this happens to King Kong too, where Godzilla like incapacitates him and then Godzilla gives him a speech about how they got to stop fighting. And and then they realize both their moms are named Martha. Yeah.
01:28:24
Speaker
Godzilla's trying to bury King Kong. getzzi See, Godzilla's not smart. King Kong's still alive.
01:28:32
Speaker
It is funny to have that knowledge of how small his brain is, and you try to contextualize your action, and you're like, this guy is dumb.

Film Style and Alternate Endings

01:28:43
Speaker
You're stupid. Yeah.
01:28:47
Speaker
that was stop-motion kick. And it just looks weird because Godzilla's like feet are so stubby. It's not like a monkey kick, you know, can like they can extend their legs and stuff. like He's got little shorts. Godzilla had to i go on his tail to prop him up to get enough height out of his legs.
01:29:07
Speaker
King Kong just keeps getting knocked down and Godzilla keeps burying him. King Kong's got like no defense. Why is Godzilla's go-to thing burying... This is like...
01:29:19
Speaker
you You taught the Pokemon the ah the TM for Earthquake and he just keeps fucking spamming it. Yeah, and then he beats him with his tail right after.
01:29:30
Speaker
like, stop doing tail whip. Oh, he why didn't he just hit him with his fire? Why doesn't Godzilla always do what he does in the Gareth Edwards Godzilla where he takes the monster's mouth, opens it, puts his mouth right on top of it, and then fucking just shoot ah a blast down Yeah, exactly.
01:29:49
Speaker
should be his only move. He's like, i need to... Get as close to him as possible and then fucking just fry his insides. Yeah, do that first every time. He doesn't seem to need to recharge in this one, but does he need to recharge in other Godzilla movies? After doing the atomic breath? Yeah. Oh, the lightning. It's recharging King Kong. I like... Is that a holdover from, like, the Frankenstein of it all? Where they're like, well, Frankenstein got brought to life with electricity, so... mc Kong honestly it might be i wouldn't be surprised he's got thunder punches this was uh
01:30:33
Speaker
oh and also if there was if Frankenstein's monster was here the fire would it's game over man yeah I heard a in one of these fire shots, King Kong got lit on fire at one point.
01:30:46
Speaker
Oh, shit. The actor playing King Kong. This feels so weird for him to have like shocking powers. He shoves a tree down Godzilla's throat. Dude, he's doing, like, CIA torture shit. or Or it reminds me of one of the most unnerving parts in the original Alien is when Ash has been revealed as an android, and he, like, fucking takes a rolled-up magazine and is going to, like like, fucking kill Ripley with it. Like, it like put it down her throat. like, what the fuck? That's such a, like...
01:31:17
Speaker
brutal better executed in Alien i think Alien took it from this actually I think so Ian Holm saw this scene and he said to Ridley Scott like I have an idea for my character I gotta say the thunder punches in this look better than the thunder touches in Hellraiser And, well, it almost is like thunder punches, but then he's also just like massaging him with electricity. Yeah.
01:31:42
Speaker
They're really going at it, though. I got to say, I think I'm going to bump up this rating to at least three stars on Letterboxd. This is enjoyable. Like, racism aside. Yeah, racism aside.
01:31:54
Speaker
I was reading somewhere that this like shot, or like whatever building they're about to destroy is them taking a shot at like consumerism or something like that.
01:32:07
Speaker
I don't know what any of it means. Oh, yeah. I mean, I'm a super American, so I don't know the context. like Is that like a super like well-known building for like commerce and shit? I'm trying to think of like the American equivalent of... like I mean, honestly, the World Trade Center was, yeah you know, for us, that was a symbol of, like, commerce and shit, so.
01:32:33
Speaker
and wonder if they say, if they're like, oh, no that was, like, this building.
01:32:40
Speaker
ah i do like the scale. This looks pretty good. gotta say. They didn't need to destroy the building. It looked like they were barely trying to hit each other, and they were just, like, agreeing in the moment. They're like, we want to smash that shit, right? Like,
01:32:54
Speaker
Let's get this out of the way. They're really going at it, though. Yeah, there is like a ferocity and intensity to like, I think some of it's just like the editing in those close cuts where you're just like, wow, man, they're fucking savage. Yeah, but it is going on for a while.
01:33:13
Speaker
Kind of like the Furious. but So when they take this tumble, I heard that the first time they got it, they fell out of frame. And this is like a rumor, not confirmed, but the actor who was playing Godzilla fell on the King Kong actor and couldn't get up. And Uh, he thought he was actually going to drown and they're like, well, we can't even use the footage anyway because you guys fell out of frame. Oh, fuck. Um, the actor who played King Kong says that happened and it was the actor, uh, who played Godzilla who says he has no recollection of that.
01:33:51
Speaker
And I mean, this King Kong actor couldn't even pretend to be a monkey, so who's what to say if he's even a reliable source? I like this like tsunami that's happening. Yeah, the collapsing set looks really cool. Yeah, this is all like just a step a step forward in what we've seen in the Godzilla movies. This is why like Honda is a great director. and just logistically like i don't want to keep shitting on the director of raids again because it's clear he had less probably not alive you could go ahead and not hurt anybody it's clear that he had less of a budget but also i'm thinking about what you said about the the like falling into the water shot and that i mean because like what we do see of that take that looked cool yeah but who came away victor though
01:34:40
Speaker
you're Your boy, i think. King Kong is swimming out to sea. No Godzilla. Man, I had a Team Kong shirt that I wore for the original day of our recording, but I was too sick to record on.
01:34:53
Speaker
I meant to wear that. ah You can wear it for Godzilla V Kong. Yeah, you can just wear it then.
01:35:05
Speaker
Yeah, man, I will have to wear it then. Yeah, I'll have two separate opportunities. It's just like movie. Oh, that's that was just like a John Carpenter ending where they're like, you saw the fight.
01:35:17
Speaker
We're done. i do like it. They're like, what? 82 minutes. OK, let's wrap it up. Well, and like what else do need to see in a movie called King Kong versus Godzilla? No credits. I saw the fight.
01:35:30
Speaker
Like, let's get out of here. Yeah, no credits. It's just to the DVD menu stuff, not even menu stuff. The movie is going to start over.
01:35:40
Speaker
I'm pretty sure that's how cheap this is. Yeah, it just starts over. Well, we we I guess we have to keep doing the commentary since there's no credits. You just put it on a loop. yeah um but yeah Godzilla is nowhere to be found He's presumed dead He's lost in the ocean well It's interesting because you see them both fall and then Kong comes up and you're like, so where's Godzilla? Kong swims away He's going to swim back to his island now There was a rumor, something I had heard for years that there are two versions of this movie
01:36:20
Speaker
ah ah see Yeah, it says Japanese director Honda, but... English version written by... paul Mason and Bruce Howard. It probably said the American director and we missed it.
01:36:35
Speaker
um I'm pretty sure... English director Thomas Montgomery. Okay, so we got confirmation. Yeah, it was him. Okay. ah What's it called? Yeah, there were rumors that there were two versions of this movie. And like there is a version that got released in Japan where Godzilla comes out, Victor, and swims away.
01:36:56
Speaker
um i guess that's like not true. That's like something that doesn't exist. There's not a version with Godzilla winning. It was always going to be Kong? It was always going to be Kong, and there's there's not another version out there. Interesting. um That was at least just from ah just whatever research I could find. you know If I'm incorrect, somebody write in or comment below on Spotify and let me know. but um And it makes sense because where the next we find Godzilla in the next movie is kind of where he is at the end this. I do like that.
01:37:34
Speaker
Yeah. So it's... ah we'll We'll get into it for the next commentary, but... Yeah, this was not a bad movie. I like it a bit more on this rewatch. And in it... it stands up well especially coming after raids again which you know yeah like there are enjoyable parts of that movie but you could just feel um ah the difference there and just in terms of like scale and everything like this is this this is just what i want out of a kodzilla movie this the closest one out of just like a kaiju movie
01:38:10
Speaker
Yeah, I agree. ah Other than these space station boards. Yeah. Aside from that, which I'm pretty sure is the English director doing all of that, ah it's a step up for directing on Honda's ah side of things. I think the monster fight was very well done. There are parts that really drag ah that, like...
01:38:32
Speaker
um I think hopefully the human stuff gets tighter and tighter as these movies go on. ah They're not quite as strong as the first one was, but overall this movie is an improvement from the last one. And I think ah good tone setter for the rest of the franchise, at least this era, the Showa era. Because there is goofiness in this one. Like like we said, like this one's more openly satirical, but then also... I feel like they're taking the monsters themselves seriously enough where it's like you feel that you're like, oh no, Godzilla, this is a real deal. Like, I mean, considering dropping a but a bomb, so like it was like, no. They brought a King Kong over just to fight him. They airdropped a whole Kong. Yeah. that's almost like the fusion of the tones where you're like, this is so serious they need Kong, but then it's like balloons. Yeah. That's true. that's That's a good way to like prep someone going into these

Physical Media and Other Projects

01:39:33
Speaker
movies. Just show them that image of him being transported by the balloons. And we'll do the full shot of them dropping him and then they just tumble into each other. The fight is unrelenting, though. I thought i think the fighting in this one is off the wall. I feel like I got my money's worth. and I mean, we'll see when we get to the America one, but i don't I don't think I'm going to walk away from that as satisfied. Yeah.
01:39:57
Speaker
I'm glad i I have this DVD, too, this Blu-ray for this movie. It's a nice possession since this movie's not streaming anywhere. Good argument for physical media or piracy, one or the other. but ah Both have their functions. Yeah. um You got any plugs? ah Yeah. You check out These Guys Got Juice. um I've got to catch up on some things recorded. the Some ah movies we've we've done. Some shows. ah
01:40:29
Speaker
Yes. Just stay stay tuned on that feed. And then also I do regular guest spots on Unsourced Wall Radio. It's YouTube stream. Although you can see the past episodes recorded. We've been doing all the spider-man movies leading up to brand new day which is coming out next weekend but this weekend since we've already done all the hound ones we're gonna do uh a selection of the sony uh universe or do like uh madam webb and and morbius and talk about those and probably i mean i'm gonna bring up craven i don't know if everyone else is like want wants to spend time craven i'm gonna make sure that craven is represented
01:41:07
Speaker
because it's important. Where can people listen to those? On you on YouTube, on Sourced Wall Radio. Okay, I'll try to link those in the show notes. I've been bad about that for the past couple commentaries. I think I'm going to go back and put in links for all of our plugs.
01:41:23
Speaker
um Yeah, i want to I want to listen to your Tom Holland episodes. I want to check those out. I mean, the Amazing Spider-Man one's pretty... I feel like that was our longest one. That's only two movies, but we talked for...
01:41:36
Speaker
I feel like people... Almost four hours. oh nice. I feel like people don't discuss ah Far From Home that much. and Jake Gyllenhaal's in that one. Yeah. ah Sam Jackson has a bit more involvement. I'm kind of just curious to hear that converse. I haven't heard that movie get talked about in a while. Well, some people, that was their favorite of the trilogy, but I always...
01:42:00
Speaker
go with bat for homecoming a lot of that is the keaton of it all like there were some parts on rewatch where i'm like yeah i don't know if that's aged as well but fucking vulture shit so good and like yeah homecoming it's pretty good Yeah, Far From Home, came both of them actually came out in very memorable summers for me. I think Far From Home, I just like a smidge more. I like the travel aspect. the It is fun to just do like European vacation, Spider-Man. Yeah, I do kind of like that. The bits, I think it's a bit funnier than Homecoming in certain areas. That one is like very consciously very leaning into like the comedy thing, which, yeah, Yeah.
01:42:44
Speaker
um There's a lot of charm to it. I forgot we were still recording a podcast for a second. Yeah. But ah okay. Yeah. um that That's good. Yeah. Go check that out on YouTube. I'm going to go ah check that out too.
01:42:59

01:43:26

Yeah, the Bone Temple. That episode is one of the better episodes when it comes to downloads. It's done very well. so That's crazy. Just a few months ago, we went to the Bone Temple. Yeah, the Bone Zone.
01:43:50
Speaker
Highway to the Bone Temple. Yeah. That's a good note to end it on. This has been Monster Curiosities. I don't know. I should have done a Kong. Oh, do it. Do the chest beat.
01:44:14
Speaker
Very nice.
