Global Sports Podcast Network: Hello everyone, welcome to the Daily Chelsea podcast. It's a transfer window special. The summer transfer window closes Monday, 7pm. We record this on Sunday evening, so 24 hours remaining.
Global Sports Podcast Network: You're listening to Martin and Taps. And over the next 10 minutes or so, we're going to reflect on the window so far. um And boy, is it going to be an interesting final 24 hours for for us, for Nicholas Jackson, for Sperman Lopez.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Saps, where do we start? Should we start with the overall um ah for now before we dive into the final 24 hours? um Chelsea's transfer business normally gets lauded.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And I've got to say, this window has been absolutely phenomenal for some transfer outgoings. We'll get onto to the incomings in a minute. But um if i if I just read out some of the Chelsea sales this summer, I mean, Jaal Felix,
Aryaman: What?
Global Sports Podcast Network: um We've made a a small profit on him. Nkunku, we've made a small loss, but um at least he's out of the door. Madueke, we've made a big profit. He came in for about 30, 35, and we've got him, sold him to Arsenal for about 55.
Aryaman: but
Global Sports Podcast Network: Petrovic to Bournemouth, we've made a profit. Ugo Chukwu, we've made a profit. Jouzri Hall, small loss. um Renato Vega, we've made a profit.
Global Sports Podcast Network: um Armando Broglie's gone. Chuck Gwemecki's gone as well. so that there's there's some real good wins here in the Chelsea transfer outgoings.
Aryaman: Yep, yep, no, absolutely. And I would say this was needed. It was absolutely needed and it's good that we are actually focusing on the squad depth now.
Aryaman: ah Instead of just actually, you know, just getting on and signing whoever we want, we are actually strategizing on what we want.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah. Yeah.
Aryaman: And it's looking really good with the signings of already of Jao Pedro and Esteban and everyone that's come in.
Global Sports Podcast Network: yeah
Aryaman: It's going to look really good.
Global Sports Podcast Network: and one more outgoing which uh i i am hesitant to mention but um kepper is arizabalaga to we sold to arsenal for five million and we won't mention the heavy heavy loss we made on that transfer but good to get his uh his salary out of the door anyway um to
Aryaman: Yeah, no.
Aryaman: Yes.
Global Sports Podcast Network: to the Chelsea retiree home, a.k.a. Arsenal. um That's the window so far. As you said, you've mentioned some of the incomings already, notably headlined, as you say, by Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittins, Jorl Hato wasn't cheap either at £35 million, Stavall and then Garnaccio has been the latest one confirmed um really just after the Fulham victory Liam De Lappe, I forgot to to mention as well.
Global Sports Podcast Network: So what are your thoughts on um on the window overall?
Aryaman: you
Global Sports Podcast Network: In another words, before the window started, if I had said to you we would sign Liam De Lappe, Gerard Pedro, Jamie Gittins, obviously Esteval we knew about, Jorl Hato, Alejandro Garnaccio, would you have been happy?
Aryaman: um in In a certain way, yes. But in a certain way, the players have you missed out.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Aryaman: on signing, it was the really, really poor.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Aryaman: i would say it's been a bank average transfer window ah is our is what I would say. And the the the preferred players that we actually wanted, ah we we weren't able to get that and that was a really poor move.
Aryaman: But with the players that have have come in and i believe that um Chelsea used to sign, ah you know, the headline headline players and they used to spend out, what, 90, 100 million pounds ah
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yep.
Aryaman: every transfer window and this time we are going for, you know, like ah like players who are not that established, except for like Garnacho who's been there in the Premier League for a while. Say, for example, Jamie Gettins, he's been playing in the Bundesliga.
Aryaman: ah we We don't know what what all he can bring, but it can be it can be a really good, you know, season to find out what they all have, to be honest with you.
Global Sports Podcast Network: yeah
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, no, I'm with you. I sort of agree with you, actually. I have quite mixed feelings um on this window. i think we've done good business just from a accounting perspective.
Global Sports Podcast Network: I don't deny some of the rationale of some of these incomings. You know, that that the the philosophy very much seems to just be... um you know I guess in financial terms, it's buy low, sell high. But in footballing terms, it seems to be buy young, sell old.
Aryaman: yeah you
Global Sports Podcast Network: um And this there's definitely the logic of a resale value of you know the the likes of Liam DeLapp, Jamie Gittins, Alejandro Garnaccio. Soon enough, we're really not going to have anyone older than, frankly, about 25.
Global Sports Podcast Network: um Whether you can win anything with kids is another thing. um But I've got to say, and I sort of asked it in a leading way. i um I'm not so happy with this window.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And the only reason I say that is I think if you asked any Chelsea fan at the start of this window what we wanted, i think it would have been a goalkeeper.
Aryaman: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And we haven't got a goalkeeper. Now, don't get me wrong. I am going to drop that battle because I think Rob Sanchez, midway through the window, obviously he played the Club World Cup. So the the Paris Saint-Germain performance was actually a really, really good win.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Really good win and really good performance from Rob Sanchez. So he slightly alleviated my concern there. But if we start from the start of the window, i think most Chelsea fans would have said, we need a goalkeeper. probably need a new defender.
Aryaman: Hmm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: um You know, that yeah we've we've bought we've got a lot of... Levi Colwell, you know, was injured. We've got a lot of... Wesley Favana, you know, always seems to be injured as well. So I think there was a desire for a goalkeeper, a new centre-back.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And all we seem to have got... And obviously a new striker, which we we have got in Liam DeLapp. um But what we seem to have... rather than prioritise a goalkeeper and central defender, we just seem to have a ton of these, you know, airy-fairy, if I can call them that, number 10s, which, ah you know, aren't really a left-winger, aren't really a right-winger, aren't really an attacking midfielder, aren't really a striker, but supposedly can do all four in one go.
Global Sports Podcast Network: What's your thoughts on that? Because there seems to be this desire. I've seen, I've heard Enzim Reska say it as well. He likes people who can play many, many positions.
Aryaman: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: um You know, Gerard Pedro, for example, was sort of the striker after Nicholas Jackson, but then Cole Palmer got injured and Gerard Pedro was actually the Cole Palmer replacement um as the sort of the attacking midfielder in that Fulham match um over the weekend.
Global Sports Podcast Network: So he's sort of, he's doing a little bit of both of being that attacking midfielder and striker, replacing Palmer and Jackson. What's your thoughts on these... a sort of, you know, I unfairly called them the airy fairy players, but just the players that seem to be very, very fungible, but therefore don't really, um, excel in necessarily any one position.
Aryaman: Yeah, no, I think it is a good thing. Again, if we look into the negatives too much, I don't think we can, you know, there's there's so much we can do about it. But I think with the but the diversity and the versatility of these players and with the way Enzo Merezka wants to work, I think if the if these players can give him what he wants, so for example, if he wants Garnaccio to play on the left wing and he wants him to fall back to the left wing back, I think he he he is capable of that because he he is full of energy and he he he's young, basically, so he can he can put in that shift.
Aryaman: So I feel it's a good thing that we have these you know diverse set of players who can fill in and you not drop in and drop out when there's a
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Aryaman: There's a problem, say for like you mentioned about Cole Palmer and Jao Pedro. And I think it is really good. And um I just hope we see the best of these players, to be honest.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, no, it makes sense. um We'll go to a short break and straight afterwards, we will talk more about what's in store for the final 24 hours or so of the window. And it's going to be a very, very big 24 hours.
Aryaman: Hmm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Welcome back to the Daily Chelsea podcast. um So, Taps, we have, what's it, about 25 hours left of this summer transfer window.
Global Sports Podcast Network: The big headline as we record this is that... Is he going to stay? Is he going to go of Nicholas Jackson? a world record fee was a loan fee, I should say, was agreed with Bayern Munich to send him on loan there for the season about 15 million euros, ah we believe, with an option, not an obligation to buy at the end of the season for around about 50, 60, which then takes his total fee to about 80. But but timing be timing sometimes.
Global Sports Podcast Network: If only, you know, I'm sure Nicholas Jackson is thinking right now, if only the Chelsea-Fulham game, you know, wasn't the Saturday 12.30, if it was the Sunday 4 o'clock game, that would have been an extra 24 hours. I'm sure his medical at Bayern Munich would have been done, the paperwork would have been signed, but...
Global Sports Podcast Network: It wasn't. He was on the plane to Munich. And we understand as soon as Liam De Lappe got injured, and we believe it's a hamstring injury for about eight weeks,
Aryaman: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: It looks like Chelsea, as we record this tonight, have pulled the plug on that loan deal. Now, there's also reports that Nicolas Jackson is, frankly, staying in Germany to try and push through the loan.
Global Sports Podcast Network: um And so the next 24 hours are going to be huge. Of course, it it makes sense for Chelsea to, it's the cheap option really to do rather than, you know, try and recruit, I guess, another striker just to ask the outgoing one to come back.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But ah Where are you? Where are you? Where's your head in this? ah Do you feel sorry for Nicholas Jackson? Are you more really leaning towards Chelsea?
Aryaman: No, I think it's it is a really frustrating situation for him. I would say it would be a frustrating situation. And um yeah, I think it's not good to be shunned out of a club and then you're called call back in as a backup.
Aryaman: That's not the best feeling, obviously. But I think he still, if there's a part of him that he wants to prove something to the Chelsea supporters, I think he can still do something.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Aryaman: And he can still work well with Joe Pedro and, i ah you know, the supporting, say like, Garnaccio Jamie Gittins. But I still think that if he can if he can just work harder on his finishing, that he can he might just stay another couple of seasons as well, is what I believe. But it's totally up to what Chelsea decides now.
Aryaman: if they If they want to loan him hard or if they want to take and take an option of going for another player instead of, you know, ah calling him back... ah we We have to find out that. But i think he'll be all alright if he stays.
Aryaman: If he goes, then we do need a replacement because we cannot we cannot go without an out-and-out centre forward.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, I've got to say, I've got to say really two things. One, I'm really shocked that Nicholas Jackson, again, I'm not his biggest fan at all. um And I definitely didn't think he would be Chelsea's number one strike going into the season.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But... Why and how he's been shunted straight away from number one to number three, I'm actually quite bemused.
Aryaman: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: like I wouldn't have been totally shocked, actually, if, for example, you know as you say, he he frankly started the season. I could have seen a situation where Enzo Moresca goes, you know, you are our main man for the last two years.
Global Sports Podcast Network: At least start the game against Crystal Palace. um And even if you're not you know if you're not good, then Joao Pedro and Leandrath get a chance. I think... what put the nail into the coffin much earlier than it should have was Rob Pedro did phenomenally in the Club World Cup.
Aryaman: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And then that automatically cemented his place as number one Chelsea st striker. But I still think the number two Chelsea striker was up for grabs, um you know alternating with Liam to that.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But just the fact got shunted straight away to number three and he knew it, and he strikes me as a guy who needs to be happy and in in a place and be loved, um it didn't surprise me.
Aryaman: yeah
Global Sports Podcast Network: that's That's my point number one in terms of, ah guess, how we've got here. But now we are here. I've got to say, I'm really, i am team Nicholas Jackson for the next 24 hours because you can' you can't say to a player, sorry, we don't need you.
Global Sports Podcast Network: You're number three striker.
Aryaman: It is.
Global Sports Podcast Network: You can go. And then all of a sudden something happens and it's like, oh no, I know we said we didn't need you, but we actually need you now. Like it's it's very, I think, quite unprofessional to, you know, you didn't need him.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And, you know, if if you think he's not good enough and therefore you let him go, he's not all of a sudden now good enough. it's It's smacks of desperation. um
Aryaman: it is
Global Sports Podcast Network: and I think it's it's not a good place for the for the club to be, even if it means you need you know to spend now a bit more resource to try and um you know source.
Global Sports Podcast Network: a new striker on loan or just even promote someone from the from the academy to be that sort of deputy striker for gerald pedro liam de lapp you know he's coming back in six to eight weeks it's not six to nine months um it just strikes as as desperation and we've missed out now on a world record loan fee so um and again you know
Aryaman: Yeah. ah
Global Sports Podcast Network: Whose heart is really in it? You know, I totally get your point that Nicola Jackson probably can still put in a shift, but his heart clearly wasn't in it. Chelsea's heart isn't in it.
Aryaman: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: It absolutely smacks of desperation, which um is not a good place for either party to be in. And so, yeah, let's see how the next 24 hours play out. It is a 7 p.m. UK time window closure Monday, 1st of September, not 11 p.m. They brought it forward.
