Denis Tyrell: Hey. I'm good. I'm good. It was an action -packed weekend. so i'm Ready to talk about it.

Denis Tyrell: How would... How was your trip?
echo_blades: My trip was exhausting. exhausting to say the least.

echo_blades: It was a combination of both, right? So there's there's this thing. that i have like is a kind of a pet peeve of mine M. And. When I ask somebody...
echo_blades: how they're doing. It's probably like the the first of the morning. you know, greetings of it Any. atmosphere, any event. work personal. whatever, right? You talk to somebody in the morning.
echo_blades: I can't stand it when somebody tells me. Oh I'm so tired. I might. Okay. All right. Really? That's I get it. It's the morning time, you know. So you know it it always drives me nuts.
echo_blades: Um, But I will say that on ah Friday of last week. I had ran pretty hard. and That's about. the response that I was able to give some people. Hmm. Because I have a tendency to.
echo_blades: To run. really, really hard sometimes on. you know minimal sleep. And then. one it just catches up with me one day and it's it's a it's a I don't know if it's a disaster, but it's mentally fatiguing and and kind of hard to get through it. And that that was Friday for me because.
echo_blades: It was... a Um, Friday, or we recorded. That's a late night. Tuesday I flew out late. ah Wednesday up early all day.
echo_blades: And then I started the the adventures of of the week but yeah the trip was great man um it was really productive. Work trip, um got a lot done. um we ended up having went up there for the um the group up there.
echo_blades: Um... The guy that runs the the office uh puts together a yeah Picnic every year. for for the guys. And. um You know, some people are are creative with how they put things together like that.

echo_blades: better at it like i'm not that guy like i I... don't i just assume is not even remember to have a picnic but let alone put one together with some thought and some cool things i just suck that way But the dude, put a he does a good job, man. and ah We did some...
echo_blades: Uh, So anyways, we just. it's ah He barbecued for everybody. you some hamburgers and hot dogs a couple games for the families and everything so it was a good time Um,
echo_blades: And then but at the end of that. I think the. Thing was that cat. from 12 to three. And I had to. Leave around like 3 30, but the last hour or so of that. Um, I I had. I was okay. I was cooked.
echo_blades: i was cooked like i checked out mentally like i i actually kind of felt bad a little bit because I had nothing left to give. um Had to jump on a plane. And then...
echo_blades: got there and then my plane was delayed you know like 45 minutes and all i want to do is just get home you know
Denis Tyrell: Oh, that sucks.
echo_blades: And I have. I fly out of Sacramento, which works. To my advantage most times, but... This is the time it doesn't because it's it's further away. and Uh, you know. But.
echo_blades: Anyways, overall it was pretty cool, man. Um, So. Yeah. And then... um
echo_blades: Yeah. How was your trip?
Denis Tyrell: It was good. Um, I started the week finishing off that. um Oceanic folder, which... um
echo_blades: I did. I did see that.
Denis Tyrell: You saw that one right? ah it actually sold like...
echo_blades: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: I posted it up on Instagram and it sold in like a half an hour. So I was pretty happy about that. Um,
echo_blades: Oh, you didn't let it go to the patrons first?
Denis Tyrell: Actually, no I didn't. um i actually didn't expect someone asked me I didn't even expect to um
echo_blades: Hmm?
Denis Tyrell: to get it sold so quick. but some guy asked me and, Yeah. I don't know, money was a plus.
echo_blades: Nice.
Denis Tyrell: The next one, the the I'm doing another one.

Denis Tyrell: um No, I went up and then I had... Brunch with my... um my buddy Jason on the way up, which was cool. And then. Uh, I think I got to...
Denis Tyrell: um Rick's place around. I don't know, like 2 o 'clock or something like that. And. um And then... uh mike got there shortly after like an hour or so after you know i had the best time Thursday.
Denis Tyrell: afternoon and evening. just sitting around and shooting the shit with Mike and Rick. That was super fun. we just you know we got
echo_blades: Nice.
Denis Tyrell: We got the... you know, some some more so some more Mike stories, which are always hilarious. Of like. Him starting out. oh i I got to tell you a funny story. So.
Denis Tyrell: We always talk about... The Damascus, I never clued this in, you know, when you, when you're doing a mosaic. And. You're tiling a mosaic.
Denis Tyrell: And we call that a fairy flip.
echo_blades: A what flip?
Denis Tyrell: Right? A fairy flip?
echo_blades: No, I must have missed.
Denis Tyrell: Oh.
echo_blades: I must have not been listening.
Denis Tyrell: Oh, youre you're not familiar with that term?
echo_blades: No.
Denis Tyrell: Um, I always thought it was just a term because you take every second one and you flip it.
echo_blades: Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay.
Denis Tyrell: Right? I always thought that's why we call it a fairy flip.
echo_blades: All right.
Denis Tyrell: like i never it's from a It's a guy's name. I forget the guy's first name. Famous knife maker. His last name is Ferry. He's the one that did well. I think that was the story. He didn't actually invent it, but he, I think he got credit for it because he was the one that, I don't know.
Denis Tyrell: I don't know the whole thing, but I was like.
echo_blades: Showed it first.
Denis Tyrell: I'm like, you're kidding me. That's a guy's name? i have I never connected that together. that It was i Thomas Ferry or I forget. I'll look it up. but um And it wasn't just like fairy flip.
Denis Tyrell: Fairy F -A -I -R -Y, fairy flipbook. So Mike has all these like really funny anecdotal stories about knife making that. Yeah, it was just awesome. i haven't dinner and sitting around on the porch just having...
Denis Tyrell: I think we piled stuff, half a bottle of... ah of whiskey Thursday night. um and But it was great. um Yeah, and then we got busy Friday morning starting to make the knives.
echo_blades: Nice.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. But... um
echo_blades: How's the weather?
Denis Tyrell: It was amazing. uh we had perfect weather like the week at weekend before it was 105 there
echo_blades: nice
Denis Tyrell: And we had the shop open. It was. I mean, I think it got up to like 82. But... In the, like in the sun, but in the
echo_blades: You are probably done.
Denis Tyrell: In the shade, it was like mid 70s. It was perfect.
echo_blades: Nice.
Denis Tyrell: It was like totally nice. Um, Yeah, we were joined by two of Rick's students, Jim and Scott. who joined us for the class of those four of us.
Denis Tyrell: And. That was a little... That was a lot. Like there was four people. Plus. um Mike. teaching that class and I kind of felt bad for Rick. I don't.
Denis Tyrell: I don't think he i I know he was not prepared for how much he was going to get dragged Like he was taking the course himself, but I don't think he took into account how much he was going to get dragged away.
Denis Tyrell: like finding tools, setting up tools. Um,
echo_blades: Hmm.
Denis Tyrell: you know, like Two of the guys don't really know how to use his mill. I don't know where all these little tools are. Like, where is the... Where's the hammer? Where's the screwdriver? Where's the...
Denis Tyrell: Like I brought some of my own tools, but.
echo_blades: right
Denis Tyrell: Like not. Where are the calipers? Things like that. that um You know, and i he was constantly being pulled into, how do I use the surface grinder? How do I wear the belts? what but did the dead Yeah. um So that that was a little, and I even found it a little annoying because I don't like interrupting him every single time. but but everybody was because we had to.
Denis Tyrell: you know get things going. But... um Yeah, I mean, early on the... the knife we're making. And... Once you once you I'll pull it apart for you at some point. I'll probably do a video on. making the next one.
Denis Tyrell: But it's really a lockback. Um, You're familiar with a lockback, right? So it's a lock back. that has a coil spring.
Denis Tyrell: and The bolster. Is bolted. to the lock bar. So when you push the bolster and there's relief on the bolster, but so the bolster is not bolted down.
Denis Tyrell: The bolster is only bolted to the lock bar. So when you push the edge of the bolster it pushes on the top of the lock bar releases the knife and since there's a coil spring Pops it out.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: Gotcha.
Denis Tyrell: Um, But... I've never made a lock back, I've made a slip joint. Um, But I've never made a lockback, and they're very finicky. Like that lock has to lock perfectly in both the open and the closed.
Denis Tyrell: and not just... like lock perfectly but depth wise so that I'm shown. Jared here, but... So that it's. Even when it's closed?
Denis Tyrell: And... Even here when it's open. And I'm talking here, I mean the the spine.
echo_blades: Gotcha.
Denis Tyrell: So the lock sits down into the lock.
echo_blades: It's fine, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: space or whatever. So it took a little doing. And mine has a tiny, tiny little bit of play. but Like not. Pretty good for my first one, I think. So... um But yeah, I mean, we it took a long time.
Denis Tyrell: Like I felt like I I could have done this in... two days by myself but just the whole you know streaming for people through the process but um Yeah, I'm happy with the result. It was... um it was It was cool. I liked it. Some things I would change.
Denis Tyrell: um Like when you do it, the the two screws. Um, Here. which are the screws that hold the bolster to the lock bar.
Denis Tyrell: are very close to the spine. And so then it's really hard to. to um contour the knife after because the The screws.
Denis Tyrell: these two screws here. are very close to the edge.
echo_blades: Yeah, I can kind of see it.
Denis Tyrell: So...
echo_blades: Yep.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. So I think. On the next one I'm going to... Hide those. I'm gonna make them go from the other side. So that there you don't see them and I'm gonna flush the top. I was the only one that did like carbon fiber over both so you can't really see the bolster.
Denis Tyrell: um which I thought was cool. Um, Yeah, there's some other things that ah I think I'll change, but I'm going to do. Once I get this. damascus oceanic done i think i'm going to do one of these in an oceanic model as an auto.
Denis Tyrell: uh bolster release auto for for Austria. um
echo_blades: Nice.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. Anyway. it was super cool it was awesome uh hanging with rick and uh and mike and scott and jim for the weekend and we had some good times. We had some good lunches.
Denis Tyrell: And. Yeah, it was. It was just a really, really great class. And. I'm looking forward to making it some more autos. I learned a ton. A ton. Got some new tools on the way.
Denis Tyrell: Um,
echo_blades: oh
Denis Tyrell: I like it. broke down and like i'm because these need washers i broke down and bought um a tool to make my own washers. and what else oh some slitting saws or sorry they're like little mini hole saws for doing kind of the races for the The Springs.
Denis Tyrell: Um, Some other stuff. but Yeah. But it was cool. You'll see it You'll see it in action at some point.
Denis Tyrell: But...
echo_blades: Nice.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. It was really cool. Um, Yeah, and on the way home, and I know you went fishing as well, on the way home, I stopped at a couple of three different lakes on the way home.
echo_blades: I did, yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Because I drove back through 88 and... Caught ah like a two -pound trout at Capel's Lake today. So... That was pretty cool. And I figured that's what...
echo_blades: You can go home today.
Denis Tyrell: What's that?
echo_blades: You came home today?
Denis Tyrell: Yeah. I stayed an extra day because I wanted to fish.
echo_blades: All right.
Denis Tyrell: um I wanted to drive 88 home and then fish on a bunch of those lakes on the way home.
echo_blades: Nice.
Denis Tyrell: So that's what I did this morning. Um, Yeah. Cable's Lake is gorgeous.
echo_blades: Would you catch it on?
Denis Tyrell: You've been to that one?
echo_blades: I don't know. I don't, it's not ringing a bell.
Denis Tyrell: That's the one where you drive right by and you kind of drive on the dam. of Capel's Lake. yeah I know you've driven by it because we...
echo_blades: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. Right by Ham's.
Denis Tyrell: No.
echo_blades: Ham station.
Denis Tyrell: It's way before that.
echo_blades: That's for the damn it.
Denis Tyrell: No, no, it's way before that It's like before Kirkwood. It sounded like on the other side. It's before Silver Lake.
Denis Tyrell: It's not it's not far. It's like as soon as you start climbing the The the mountain there you pretty much hit cables like
Denis Tyrell: but anyway you've driven by it but it's beautiful it's huge lake but it's like pristine. It's so clean. and Yeah. Caught a really nice rainbow there. and Yeah. It was fun.
Denis Tyrell: Got home like three o 'clock and then Took an hour nap. But I see you you caught some fish too. Tell me about your the rest of your trip.
echo_blades: I'm trying to find this damn light, but yeah. Um... Yeah, so we went... ah But it did. That was. Wednesday night.
echo_blades: Um, Yeah, hooked up with Steve Lockwood. And. um It's hard. But... It's wood. For me, forever.
echo_blades: Um, And. He right before I was well when I was heading up there. we We're trying to like coordinate everything. And he was like, And it's a bummer because you're you're missing the big.
echo_blades: Salmon Run. by like a week. He goes right around now, the beginning of August, he goes, they're kind of spotty. They're here and then they're not. And then they're here and then they're not. But he says the last week.
echo_blades: of August. and I think it's like two or three weeks, either at the end of August, early September is the big. We're there. plentiful and he's like yeah you're just gonna miss it so He's like, you know, we can go out and. Try.
echo_blades: And then he goes, uh, That buddy has... Told him. Okay. a little sturgeon spot. and asked me if I wanted to go. Try for some sturgeon.
echo_blades: And. I don't know what I was thinking, but... You know, I like I like bass fishing, trout fishing. I like to... I'll do it too.
echo_blades: pull stamp on my on my license and i'll I'll throw a ah bait. But then I like to just wing a lure around just to keep.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
echo_blades: you know my mind from Going crazy. Um, And then on salmon, you're trolling. So. that's kind of uneventful on the fishing thing unless you're you're hammering them you know Um,
echo_blades: But you got, you know, good conversation. and stuff like that to keep you occupied. But... you know striper and sturgeon is just you know you drop the shit down side of the boat and Let it sit on the bottom. and Then you wait.
echo_blades: Um, But I'll tell you what, man. I'll tell you what. We were out there for probably maybe an hour and a half. ish Maybe?
echo_blades: an hour and a half -ish.
Denis Tyrell: no not
echo_blades: um And we got. Three. Three bytes. We landed one. Yeah. And. That.
echo_blades: was a fucking event. And then I caught. The one that I caught. um So the first one got on.
echo_blades: I don't so Sturgeon or dinosaurs? They're fucking old.
Denis Tyrell: They're ugly.
echo_blades: They're large. They're fucking massive. They're... Yeah, they're... Fucking. Unique looking. To say the least. Um, ahem But all my years of fishing, I've never actually gone after like. really big fish.
echo_blades: Um, So. Ah. I had no idea. Like... the The labors of an actual. Like fish fight.
Denis Tyrell: Have you never got deep sea fishing?
echo_blades: Because. i've gone deep sea fishing but even deep sea fishing it's not it's just you know They... i mean come on deep sea fishing out here you you drop the fucking thing off and then you wait
Denis Tyrell: I don't mean here. I meant like Cabo or something.
echo_blades: No, I've never done anything like that. I've never gone after anything like that.
Denis Tyrell: Okay.
echo_blades: So zero. Nothing to relate to in that manner So when the first one hit, That fucking thing said.
echo_blades: He's got line counter out. And. and And fuck, man, yeah. I... This trip certified. um I can't see anymore without my glasses. Because I had sunglasses on. And. But he's got a line counter lead core.
echo_blades: And we were down to like. 35, 40 feet. you know, somewhere around there, that thing hit and it just fucking. I almost pulled the... the the the rod.
echo_blades: It was out to like 300 and something feet. And then. And I was like. Bip. I was so like, just like. in the moment there. He's fucking unhooks the anchor. He's got the boat in reverse. We're chasing this fucking fish backwards. Right. And then I'm, you know, I got it. I don't know if you could see, but I got the pole under my arm right here.
echo_blades: Like a fucking rookie and i'm And I'm fighting this thing and i it's out to three something. i I start making some ground on it, get it into like, you know, 300. It'll fucking run out again. Anyways, I got it bound. It was probably like...
echo_blades: 15, 20 minutes of back and forth. and it ended That one ended up getting snagged. um on some Shit at the bottom. um the fish was still on because we could still feel it like poking but like i had it to where it was tipped down like almost under the boat.
echo_blades: And. I couldn't make any ground on it. I'm like, this is either a fucking whale. Or. It snagged.
Denis Tyrell: well Oh, it was tonight.
echo_blades: it it it was not yeah and and i and i told steve like humbly i was like dude i'm gonna fucking tap uh i don't got it i ain't man enough like i need some assistance here and he he grabbed it and was like no we're we're we're fucking snagged on something so we actually had to Yeah.
echo_blades: Break the line. And that one got away. And then the next one came on and that thing spooled out to like 170. So I wasn't even tripping off of losing the first one. Until. I got this one in.
echo_blades: And relative, that one was probably four feet, maybe 25, 30 pounds. um I don't think it was quite a keeper. I don' i don't know what the the keeper is. It's a small window. It's like.
echo_blades: 48 to 96 or something like that. for sturgeon Um,
Denis Tyrell: yeah I don't know.
echo_blades: it's ah It's a weird number, but they ought to be. Yeah, I think they've got to be over four and under six to to keep. They weren't in season, so we were catching release anyways all day long. Um, But. yeah when i got that one in i was like holy shit like to be able to equate the difference between the fights that I was having.
echo_blades: Then I got pissed off that the the first one got off because that thing would have been a fucking monster, dude.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah.
Denis Tyrell: Yeah, he was probably a six -footer.
echo_blades: Oh, he was probably more than that. He was. It was, it I mean, it was. night and day difference. like And this guy. Fucking fought me pretty hard, the the second one.
echo_blades: But ah man, I was happier than a pig and shit, man. It was so much fun. They got some good video of me. um The funny part was when it got the fish, I thought he was going to bring the fish in.
echo_blades: And then we were going to get. the hookout and put it back in, but he never intended to, we just both sided him. And he was like, poor Steve, man, the guy, he's a little dude. But he's he's a bit of a beast, man. He was fucking...
echo_blades: He had that thing up on the side of the boat. And I'm... Like a fucking little kid. I have my phone out. I'm trying to take video of myself and and Beth is taking a... video and she's like get in take a picture and then steve like he's like get you get in here jared like i heard his like dad voice come out at me because i was like just spinning around in circles And I went over there and I took a picture, but I had my phone on.
echo_blades: and and i'll show it i'll send you a picture of it but if you zoom in fucking super close on the phone the way that i got in to take the picture my phone was Facing him. And it was fucking. Dead zoomed right on his fucking Lockwood.
echo_blades: it just just mega zoomed right into his junk dude and it was it was fucking hilarious he's like you might want to pull i'm like bullshit this is fucking great because it's like a little hidden secret fucking hidden mickey or something like that in there Yeah.
echo_blades: But, man, yeah, dude, that was so much fun. And for the amount of time we were out there, the weather was fucking perfect. It wasn't it was. barely any wind blowing. um it was probably I think when I was out there is probably like 80.
echo_blades: In the 80s, but it was Bye. 6 30 7 o 'clock at night so then started to cool off Um, It was just fantastic, dude. It took me probably.
echo_blades: All of. Like the whole time we were in. in the harbor getting out there. Like I could actually feel the decompression from, you know, all the stress and shit going. I was like, I can't quite fucking let it go. And then I remember I got the the line out and we're sitting there. I took a picture and.
echo_blades: I was like, all right, Steve, I'm here. Thanks man. This is is much needed. And then we started fighting with fish. so That was cool. It was a great time, man. Absolutely great.
Denis Tyrell: That's good. Sounds like you you hooked into them really quick.
echo_blades: Yeah, I was not. It was probably within 20 minutes. we We were starting to. Get some action and then.
Denis Tyrell: Wow.
echo_blades: We got the first one. That was 20 minutes, you know, of fucking. fighting around with that thing. Me. meade Borderline quitting fishing forever because I'm a bitch. but And then then I got all pumped up for the next one. and Then we actually had to go pick up Beth because she. She was a...
echo_blades: a little late getting to the to the boat but um So, yeah, it was cool, man. It was good. They are such gracious hosts. Great people. um always a good time i always it kind of sucks that i get this very small window to you know to see them and and actually hang out. So it's like we're. running around but then at the end this is hilarious he tells me that uh Hey, you know that... ah that artists... that was on um
echo_blades: Hustle and grind the Kevin, Kevin stone or.
Denis Tyrell: oh yeah
echo_blades: I can't remember. it If that that's his actual name, but.
Denis Tyrell: smell Yeah.

echo_blades: I think it is cancer. You know, the guy that does the dragons, he goes, oh, he actually did. Um, One of his pieces is over here. It's a big old eagle. And I was like. oh really he's like yeah it's just a little walk down there so we went down after everything it was dark already But those are the... pictures i posted up in the and the group chat but i thought it was hilarious man i i had a shit eating grin just looking at that thing going man that was probably the best fucking podcast episode I've ever heard and the Peace is out.
echo_blades: Insane. i mean you could to I mean, it was dark. And you could see how. polished, like mirrored up. some of the parts of that Eagle were dude.
Denis Tyrell: Well, you couldn't see how big how big was it.

echo_blades: It was huge. And it was up. you know up high too um just And all the detail in it, all the individual feathers, like the dragon scales, I can kind of probably equate it to. it It is a fantastic piece of.

Denis Tyrell: Yeah, I thought I thought you guys drove to it and it was like right there
echo_blades: No, it was at the harbor that um where his where his boat is. Whatever the downtown. Kalama, I think is the name of the city. Um, They do a little. ah like concert in the park type thing once a week. And it's right there in that big courtyard.

echo_blades: Um... Yeah, and then I drove up to Olympia the next night. And I met up with Mareko. And. We went and had... Some drinks.
echo_blades: um Had a little spot next to this place that he wanted to have dinner at. um That was a great time. That was that was actually that was really cool.
echo_blades: to to hang out. And just. just bullshit and Just... Yeah. Let's have some good conversation and and talking. Um, A lot of fun.
echo_blades: A lot of fun. but did the the the the real The real juicy stuff here is... I didn't. Pick I didn't give any suggestions on where we're going to eat.
echo_blades: And. with ah The bar we were hanging out for a minute. next door. um uh, It was literally next door to the restaurant. And we come out of the thing and he's like, oh, you're ready to go? I'm like, yeah, let's go.
echo_blades: And I walk into this place and I look and I'm like. What in the fuck does this guy got me into here? And. I'm not a big fan of like Mediterranean. cuisine.
echo_blades: Um, It's just, no, I don't i don't like hummus. and a lot of that you know what what what's typically served in the in that kind of dish. So I looked at him, I'm like.
echo_blades: The hell is this place? And he's like, well, it's a Syrian food. I go. You're going to have to fucking. talk really stupid to me because I have no idea.
Denis Tyrell: Are you saying Syrian as in from Syria?
echo_blades: And from... Assyrian food. And I go, what the fuck is Assyrian food? And he goes, well, I mean, it's basically like it's an old civilization. old civilization that's was located in what's now Iraq.
echo_blades: And so it was Middle Eastern food. And I was just like. Oh, great. Because the to me, a kebab needs to have. Onion, pineapple. Some kind of...
