Curt: ah This week, future, past, whatever it is, I'll talk about some titanium anodizing experiments. um How small is too small? And ah HTML website,

Curt: jargon. How about you? What are you going to talk about, Jamie, besides coughing and dying?

jamie peacock: I'm going to drink more of this stuff now tired of this. um Yeah, we're going to talk about cross-drilling 950 parts in like two hours, um how manual chucks suck, and my smaller, vast workflow that I've been adopting on the LK.

jamie peacock: But yeah, how are you this fun day, Kurt?

Curt: Nice. but I'm doing good. You sound like you're still... fighting whatever demons have crawled down into your lungs.

jamie peacock: No.

jamie peacock: I'm healed. I finished my antibiotics, therefore I am healed.

Curt: Oh, okay, that's how it works. so You sound perfectly healed, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yes.

jamie peacock: Yeah, I've just got a lingering cough now. It's much, much better.

jamie peacock: Yeah, no, like I slept fine last night and didn't wake up hacking a lung up all night.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so it's just now a lingering cough and having a bra yesterday afternoon didn't really help with all the smoke, but it was tasty.

Curt: Fair enough. Nice. Yeah. that's Whenever you describe those, they sound so delicious. i was like, that sounds fantastic.

jamie peacock: Yeah, and we didn't we didn't cock around. I think there were six of us and we had like seven or eight kilograms of meat.

Curt: oh That's a decent amount.

jamie peacock: South Africa style. No, but that's South Africa. because I think I ate like a kg and a half of steak. Like while I was cooking.

jamie peacock: Yeah, South African bra. We don't we don't fuck around. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so Carl and I only got back at like two yesterday. And then his wife came through and Danica's friends were here. So we got here, we bra-ed, and then then his wife pitched up with a whole other thing, like with their meal prep for the week. And he bra-ed all their meal prep quickly on the bra. Yeah.

Curt: Oh, nice. Nice.

jamie peacock: know, it was lacquer.

jamie peacock: We had had a lot of fun yesterday afternoon.

Curt: sick. That's good. I'm glad.

jamie peacock: And there were other doggos, which was fun. I got to meet Danica's friend's new doggo. It's standard poodle. His name is Dragon. He is super cute.

Curt: But it's such an aggressive name for a poodle.

jamie peacock: Yes, I understand that poodles are frickin neurotic as hell. So her one dog had cancer and got put down like not even a month ago. But when he was diagnosed, she organized another one so that She would have a dog to fill the hole in her heart.

jamie peacock: And Griffin was very, um very, very neurotic.

Curt: Sure. Yeah.

jamie peacock: And this is the first time I've seen Phoenix, also known as Fluffetron. He has the same hairstyle as me, also a standard poodle. um It's first time I've seen him since Griffin hasn't been there. And the dog is a totally different dog.

jamie peacock: He was feeding off of Griffin's new neurotic behavior.

Curt: Oh, really?

jamie peacock: So he was always like super skittish.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: That doggo was having such a blast. Like I was the only one who could walk up and touch the dogs on the head. Like Shaz couldn't even do it. Like I would walk up and I could touch them on the head.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: No one else was allowed to touch them on the head. And since since griffin was yeah Griffin was put down, Phoenix has become a much more like chilled doggo. He's a lot happier, like a lot less neurotic.

jamie peacock: Which was quite interesting to see.

Curt: Wow.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Okay, we're having such a blast with the Rottweilers running and fetching and playing. And yeah, it was great.

Curt: Oh, that's good. That's awesome.

jamie peacock: but don anyway um Yeah.

Curt: So I say, his yeah other than dogs, how's Machining World been treating you?

jamie peacock: yeah. Yes. Yeah, machining world's fun. I'm not going to the workshop today. Because it's a Sunday.

Curt: No? ah oo you're going to do it.

jamie peacock: Danica won't let me work on Sundays. Yes.

Curt: Good.

jamie peacock: ah Doesn't mean I'm not working.

Curt: Good. That's nice.

jamie peacock: I've got anode to run.

Curt: Okay, fair.

jamie peacock: Like literally before we started recording, I went in through 400 parts in the Tumblr.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Because as unfortunately my Tumblrs, well most of my Tumblrs, are still here. They require me to build little tables and things to move them, so I haven't moved them yet.

Curt: Okay. Well, I mean, I'll give you a little bit of a pass on tumbling because at least that's fairly like passive, like throw parts in and come back.

jamie peacock: Well, the issue is it's a it's my vibratory tumbler and it's got a bucket underneath it with a filter and a pump so that it flows water through the vibratory tumbler. To keep the media cleaner, it makes a world of difference, but it's bolted to the wall.

Curt: Mm-hmm.

jamie peacock: So now I need to build a little cart for it that I can cart it in and out at the new shop.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: So I can put it an outside area to let tumble.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: And I just haven't got around to it yet.

Curt: What do you find the difference between like the water flush? Does it, does it just cut faster or do you get a better finish or?

jamie peacock: Dude, like it takes takes a five hour tumbling down to like an hour and a half.

Curt: Oh, really?

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's wild.

Curt: Interesting.

jamie peacock: So I think I've got it set up every three minutes. It pumps water for like 10 seconds or so. And then I've drilled hole in the side of it it drains back to the bucket.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: And then I've got a one micron filter, I think. Like just a canister filter that it sucks the the water through from the bucket.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: So it just recirculates, but the water coming in is pretty clean. And it it cuts the time like wildly.

Curt: Huh. Okay. Good to know.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah, no, no, i dude, like a game changer.

Curt: Hmm.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: Nothing compared the big tumbler, but for the little ball tumblers, drill a hole in the side of it and put a drain pop.

Curt: Interesting.

Curt: Interesting. Okay.

jamie peacock: Yeah. No, because the problem is you, you tumble and you make dust and then the dust gets stuck in the media and then the media is now smooth. So just having that constant water flush, literally it's less than a third of the time tumble stuff.

Curt: Well, I guess I wonder if it'll, cause all my, like most of my media that I tumble with is like non abrasive. Like it's all ceramic.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's all polishing media.

Curt: So I don't know. Yeah. it's all So I don't know if it'll, I mean, it'll probably make a difference.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: but It's going to be better.

jamie peacock: worth a try.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Anyways. Yeah, totally. Yeah. Yeah. Totally.

jamie peacock: Yeah, because I used to, I used to run it wet.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: And then you would see it would do really well. And then would drop off after about an hour or so that the you just get no more progress, because the media is all clogged.

Curt: Hmm.

Curt: Right. Yeah.

jamie peacock: And the water was brown, or brown, gray, from all the aluminium particles.

Curt: I mean, I guess even though mine's not abrasive and I throw all the titanium parts in there. Yeah. After a few hours, like you do get a great, like great water coming out of it. So obviously it's still braiding just differently.

jamie peacock: Yes. But yeah, the flush the flush made a world of difference.

Curt: Yeah. yeah

jamie peacock: Because I used to tumble the knives for like eight hours. I would literally throw them on before I went to bed and wake up in the morning, take them out and throw another set in and then take them out. And then I'd be running the tumbler 24-7 on eight-hour shifts.

jamie peacock: I think it was eight or ten-hour shifts.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: um Because the the performance would go down after after a few hours.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Now I throw them in there for like two hours they're done.

Curt: Sick. Okay. Interesting.

jamie peacock: and made It made a huge difference.

Curt: interest Nice.

jamie peacock: it's all It's all these little things you don't think to share.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: a

Curt: Yeah. I just, yeah. I mean, i I knew it would help, but I just like, same thing. I just throw them in and not, yeah, not worry about it, but I'm getting to the point now where, well, I'm getting a different Tumblr, but we're not going to turn it back to the Tumblr cast because I think I've been saying for years, going to get a different Tumblr.

jamie peacock: Didn't know how much

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: So just gla glaze over that until it actually happens.

jamie peacock: I'm excited the day that you're talking about, Ralph.

Curt: yeah i don't probably a thousand years from now so

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's one of those things that it's annoying, but not annoying enough to fix until you fix it and then realize you've been an idiot for five years.

Curt: yeah that's the thing like yeah it takes me days to tumble all the parts but like i i do exactly what you do i throw parts in there then i go do something and i throw and it's it's just it's not a bottleneck to my procedures that i don't care but like i should care because yeah

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Well, I need this tumbling done this morning so that I can throw in barnacles because I need to tumble some barnacles because I just use tumbling to break all the sharp corners before I anno them today because I'm going anno six of them, I think, or eight of them.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: I'm just going to do as many as I can fit in in one cycle. Then going to do some risers and some other pods and ends.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: It's nice. I like having that anno set up. I need to move it to the shop, but problem for another week.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Like...

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I think this time, I'm going to actually put a sink in my ano setup for washing parts.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Oh, yeah.

jamie peacock: And that just drains to a bucket with a float switch and lights that if the light turns on, you need to empty the fucking buckets.

Curt: Okay. Nice.

jamie peacock: Because right now I've got a bucket, you know, you need to empty it when you hear it dripping onto the floor.

Curt: was going to say, I foresee Jamie flooding his shop a lot.

jamie peacock: Yeah, I've flooded my shop a lot. So I want to put a bigger bucket at the bottom with the the float switch or something in it to just tell me when water level is getting a bit higher. You might want to dump this out.

Curt: for uh for in like in the shop here i found these like excuse me um like portable sinks and they have a self-contained like water so you can you fill up with water and then you like pump it with your foot or you it's like an electric pump you just put it you step on it like a little accelerator pedal and it pumps water out and can wash your hands whatever and then drains in so the thing is like if you have so much water like it's not going to overflow because it

jamie peacock: OK.

Curt: it drained like you yeah you put 10 liters into it you have a 10 liter waste tank you can't actually fuck it up um so i was gonna buy one of those and then i looked at the price and i'm like for that price like if i if i equate that to time i'm like i could just like i have copper pipes like just 10 feet away i'm like and i have a drain already in here i'm like i could just do a proper sink in here i'm like that'd probably way smarter so i'm like and once again it's just it's not annoying enough so it's just kick it down the road perpetually

jamie peacock: It knows ya. Yes. Yeah.

jamie peacock: So like when I upgraded the anode setup, I put a 25 liter drum of RO water with a pump because I used to use a spray bottle to wash the parts. And then your hand gets sore.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Then I had a pump up bottle.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: But then halfway through, the thing would run out of pressure and you'd have to pump it back up. So I then went to just a little like 12 volt pressure washer type story.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: And that I don't get runs anymore. it You just, you don't give a shit. You just fucking wash until the parts clean.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: But that's got a five liter bucket on the drain that gets fed from a 25 liter container.

Curt: Okay, yeah, so you're constantly gonna be flooding yourself.

jamie peacock: So it but becomes a problem. So yeah, i want to use ah a much bigger drain bucket. And I might just buy a little pump, put two limit switches with the float switch.

jamie peacock: And when it gets to a certain level, it turns the pump onto the hits other level, the low level, and just pumps it into a drain automatically that I don't have to think about it.

Curt: yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: But I don't want to do any permanent plumbing modifications at the new shop.

Curt: Yeah. I get that. Yeah, no, that makes sense.

jamie peacock: So, like, even where the shower is, I'm putting the RO system in there.

Curt: Oh, okay. Yeah.

jamie peacock: We don't need a shower at the shop. I haven't even turned the geyser on. If you to wash dishes, I want to boil the kettle. I'm not running a geyser for no reason.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Like, screw that shit.

Curt: Fair. Yeah. If you don't need it.

jamie peacock: Yeah, no.

Curt: Sure.

jamie peacock: Electric water heaters chow a lot of power. And now I have power monitoring. It's a problem.

Curt: my game now running around your house and or running around your shop turning off lights.

jamie peacock: Oh, I'll run around the shop, yeah.

Curt: Oh.

jamie peacock: Yeah, phase one is getting pummeled because ah yeah i need to i think the the good way is on phase one.

Curt: oh

jamie peacock: I think I need to move it on to phase three.

Curt: Okay. Okay.

jamie peacock: I also put one of the little transform the little clip-on transformers the wrong way, so it was reading negative.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Oh, gaining power.

jamie peacock: So I had to open the panel and turn it around. A little annoying, but you not the end of the world.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: um But yeah, that's now in, but it only works with the Shelly app and well, it now works with Home Assistant, but I don't have remote access to that yet. And I haven't set the dashboards up and all that fun stuff.

Curt: Oh.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: And then I'm also deploying my ERP as a Home Assistant add-on page, as an add-on that hosts a webpage.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Oh, oh, cool.

jamie peacock: Yes, because we have the power on the network.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Why not have it host the web page? So yeah, Claude built it out as a Home Assistant add-on.

Curt: I guess it's light enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: I need to check if it actually works the want it to work. I don't want to have to go to Home Assistant to get to the page. I want to be able to just go to an IP.

Curt: Sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: So I'll see how it's gone about handling that and then go from there.

jamie peacock: that's on the agenda for this week is getting that all all integrated and running so that we can very quickly validate pricing on jobs.

Curt: Right, yeah. No, that makes sense for both you, yeah.

jamie peacock: Because Carl, yeah, Carl's busy with the job, but 400 pieces of hollow bar. And there's not a lot of money in the job. And he's having to load them with a manual chuck. It's quite ah entertaining for me.

jamie peacock: I'm not loading them.

Curt: Ugh.

jamie peacock: But yeah,

Curt: ah

jamie peacock: I think hydraulic chuck is going to get prioritized now on his machine because it fucking sucks. It was taking him just over a minute to clean and load a part. And the cycles, the op one is only a minute and a half.

Curt: Ugh.

jamie peacock: Like we don't have that much time on the job. So he's now going to impact driver to loosen the chuck and tighten it up again. Then he used a torque wrench and just tighten the last little bit.

jamie peacock: But now the hollow bar comes in, it's rather dirty and it's clogging his coolant lines.

jamie peacock: Like from the scale is like it's causing sludge in the coolant line. So we're redoing this coolant system tomorrow so that we can try and alleviate these issues.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: ah Yeah. And that's yeah how many are you doing, sorry?

jamie peacock: Yeah. 400 of them.

Curt: Oh, yeah, okay. So enough. Everything kind of starts to add up.

jamie peacock: Everything starts to, you start seeing problems.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: um But yeah, we're build new coolant system for them and then, or new coolant lines and then you'll be fine.

Curt: Okay. Yeah.

jamie peacock: His pump is plenty strong enough, but we're restricting it down because we're using eight millimeter pneumatic line to run to the cooler nozzles. So now we're going to go buy some some fittings on Monday morning and just build a bar that bolts to the table and has the lines, but like out of 15 millimeter galve.

jamie peacock: So decent sized pop and then just screw the nozzle straight into that.

Curt: Okay.

Curt: Okay. Okay. Yeah.

jamie peacock: We also not really fucking run. We're taking like two millimeters per side on the ODI in one pass.

Curt: Oh, okay. Yeah. Okay.

jamie peacock: Like it's not and the ball as well.

Curt: Makes sense. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Like it sounds like a popcorn machine.

Curt: Oh, yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, no, we fucking sending it but but also the cutting is super inconsistent. And I was worried about that. And we had it stall the spindle on one of the parts because the part was like five millimeters longer than it was supposed to be.

Curt: Ooh. Ooh.

jamie peacock: So he was all of a sudden taking like a four and a half more facing pass.

Curt: ah

jamie peacock: So we've not added another facing cross, so we're cutting air on most of them, but rather cut air on most of them than crash on a few of them.

Curt: Yeah, like and that's enough parts where it's just yeah enough and it's short enough that it's, well, yeah, you don't want to put another, like, you don't want to, like, swipe through a gauge as you're loading it because, like, it's still such a short cycle time here.

jamie peacock: Yeah. You want to have to worry about it. Yeah.

jamie peacock: No. So...

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah. So we're now are doing op 1, then we're going to switch chucks to my chuck, because I've got more soft jaws than him. And then he's going soft jaws for op 2, where we're going to turn the other side, face it, then thread it. So only op, and then threading square thread with a square grooving tool.

Curt: Oh, OK, OK.

jamie peacock: But that's going to take a couple minutes per pot. It's a ah quarter-inch pitch. It's 4 TPR. Yeah.

Curt: Oh, whoa.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, OK.

jamie peacock: it's It's going to be yeah it's going to be ah a properly fun job, but it's a recurring job that if we can do the work, let's do the work.

Curt: Yeah, beefy.

jamie peacock: like we don't get It's not paying super, super well, but hey, that 400-part run is enough to buy a chuck and put hydraulic chuck on his machine.

Curt: Right. Yeah, yeah. yeah

jamie peacock: We're prioritizing now, I want to get a chuck on his machine so that we don't have to deal with this manually tightening shit anymore.

Curt: Yeah, that sounds tedious. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it it is. It's fine when you're doing like one or two parts or 10 parts, but 400 is, it's unpleasant.

Curt: yeah Well, that's ah that's a lot of wear on that little gear for a chuck.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Like, that's that's a lot of work. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so I think hydraulic is the thing. i can let I'm literally just going to go buy one locally, pay the bit extra and just buy it locally. um And then we've just i think we're just going to have to make an adapter to adapt his draw tube to the whatever the threads on the chuck are.

Curt: Hmm.

Curt: Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Fortunately, we have a chuck in the machine already.

Curt: What do you... How do you mean?

jamie peacock: But we have a chuck. we The draw tube's not in there.

Curt: Oh!

jamie peacock: So yeah, we have a chuck.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: We can make whatever the fuck we need to make to make it work.

Curt: Yeah, okay, see what you mean.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Nice. Nice.

jamie peacock: And then, yeah, the good way is just shitting parts out now. I cut six seconds off the cycle, off a minute and five second cycle. It's great.

Curt: nice

jamie peacock: Yeah, we actually, the coal was topping up the coolant and the percentage dropped a bit and the tap starts squeaking because not enough lubricity.

Curt: Oh really? Oh cool.

jamie peacock: So we ended up having to mix up something like 17 or 18% coolant to try and bring the concentration back up.

Curt: Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so we got it back up and then that thing just keeps on running. Like it's, I think it's coming up since we've, since we moved.

Curt: Sick.

jamie peacock: It's coming up on like 6,000 or 7,000 parts.

Curt: That's a lot. That's a lot of parts.

jamie peacock: It just runs all day, every day. 2,000 parts per tap, 2,000 parts per drill, and it just runs. buck That's four four yards on just on four and a half days per tap.

Curt: That's awesome. That's awesome.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: okay

jamie peacock: So we are chugging through those right now. Getting another drill is actually problem. The local supplier for the drill we're using is out of stock. I'm like, how long until they get stock? I need one in like a week's time. because we have a spare but yeah like gonna order more i've been told run all 10 000 of these pots in one go so let's do it

Curt: Right.

Curt: Yeah, nice. Yeah, dude. Well, you can

jamie peacock: if i can do them more in one month i'll invoice them all in one month i don't care gets us some nice cash flow so yeah got coal running running lathes non-stop but yeah what's happening on your side it because i've just been fucking talking and talking and talking

Curt: Yeah, yeah. Nice.

Curt: That sounds tedious.

Curt: but Excuse me. No sweat. No, I've caught whatever demonic thing you have through the microphone.

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: Um,

jamie peacock: I emailed it to you.

Curt: Yeah, exactly. i i Anyways, um no, I've been pissed around with ah titanium anodizing. I was for that laser thing. ah I needed to project and I'm doing one in rubber and it's just it's annoying and I'm not fired up about it. So another thing I want to do is see how small or sorry, see if I can ah fiber etch away the titanium anodize, which I'm sure I can. There's no reason I shouldn't be able to do that. Like a blade it away.

Curt: Um, but doing that, seeing how small, uh, of texts I can get, cause the anodized layer is like pretty nice to, it's not like you're a blading material. You're just like, it's just like paint almost.

jamie peacock: Taking off the oxide, yeah.

Curt: Right. So yeah, I want to see how tiny and how, like how I can hold legibility. Um, so yeah, I think I could probably make some, in so like I'm going to make my logo, but I think I'm going make my logo like one millimeter tall and just see like through like a micro microscope to see how close, how small I can make it.

jamie peacock: Nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah, I managed 0.25 ticks that was still legible on MyFiber.

jamie peacock: It's wild. But I had to turn the power right down. But then, yeah, it was a very fine balance of speed and power because too much power or too slow and you can't read it.

jamie peacock: So you had to find that perfect balance where there's enough power and it's going fast enough that it doesn't blow it out.

Curt: Yeah, that's, I'm going to do, ah the funny thing I'm to like little, those little swatch grids, like those little grids you can do of like a shape, whatever.

jamie peacock: Yes. And light burn down.

Curt: And it, you know, yeah, one size scales power, one size scale speed. and So you can kind of see where, but this, the little grid, like normally they're nice and big and you can see these grids are going to be like, you know, three millimeters by three millimeters, like just and with, you know, like 10 little grids in there, just going to be ridiculous.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: So yeah, i'm gonna have a lot of fun with that.

There is some things I want to use it for, but I don't particularly like like laser ablating away anodizing as like a final design choice for like a thing that gets handled so frequently because like you're going to wear the anodizing away off titanium.

Curt: It's just not that robust.

Curt: And if you have a crazy intricate design, it just kind of ruins the design really quickly. So it's like, it's probably not something I would...

jamie peacock: I'd be very curious to see what happens if you laser the titanium, so you etch the titanium and then you anodize it.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: I'm going to play that game too. And then I'm also going to tumble them.

jamie peacock: Okay.

Curt: Like I'm going bunch of things just because I'm curious about it too.

Curt: Cause it opens the door to, i want to go down the Mopa road of like doing color anodizing to get some crazy stuff.

Curt: But I'm also not like, yeah, it's anodizing. It's, it just never feels titanium anodizing never really feels permanent for me. So, cause it isn't so.

jamie peacock: Yes. No, it's not. to jump It's not the strongest of coating, or not the hardest of oxides.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, so, um yeah, I've been having a ton of fun with that, and just, like, trying to figure out why my... I always have issues doing green. Green is, like, the hardest color in titanium, just because it's a high-voltage color.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: You can do it grade 2. Grade 2 is a lot easier. Grade 5 is just annoying to get it vibrant, and to get it not teal, and to get it to not, like, to be, like... I want it to look like paint. I want it to be green throughout.

Curt: um I don't want it to look weird.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: um So, anyways, I have a ton...

jamie peacock: Is it super tight voltage range for green?

Curt: No, not really. Like, um I get a nice green at around, I think, 92-ish volts is where I get a nice toxic green. um But the funny thing is if I take a piece of raw titanium, like let's say it's just like mill finished bar stock, um and i clean I put it through my cleaning process, and then I anodize it, um I'll get a lovely green like throughout.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It'll look great, even though like the bar is kind of just, the it's mill finished.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: um I'll get a great green. But if I take that same titanium and face the ends, and then like I'll polish the ends, and then put it through the exact same cleaning process,

Curt: I get a splotchy anodize on all the machine faces. Obviously, I'm contaminating with coolant oil. Something is getting pressed into either from during the cutting or from the polishing.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Anyway, so i on this last Friday, I just went like, completely Howard Hughes, like Kleenex boxes on my feet, like psychopathically cleaning titanium little discs. And like, I've never done this in a sense of like, okay, this time I'm only going to do this. And this one, I'm only going to do this. And this one, I'm only going do this and just try to work out like how I could do this at an in mass. That's why I don't do a ton of green pens. Cause they're, they're not perfect for me every time.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Um, so I, I still haven't found the solution, but at least now I have a bunch of things that don't work.

jamie peacock: I thought your multi-etch was taking pretty good care of oil contamination. Oil cleaner. one Something you were doing was doing a pretty good job of sorting it out.

Curt: Yeah, I do. Yeah, I use Alkinox, which is fantastic.

jamie peacock: Elkinox.

Curt: It strips oil off great. There's just one process that I do for one of my pens right now where it's that polishing, that tumbling with the ceramic media, and I can never get a clean anodized after it without a bunch of...

Curt: I can get a clean anodized, but I have to do a bunch of finagling of like... I bring it out and like I manually clean it and then i run through Alkinox. Then I like, I'll anodize it and I'll etch it. And then like some them's off to etch it really hard. And like, I just, it's, it's not, it's not just like boop, boop, boop result, boop, boop, boop result.

Curt: It's always shifting on me. So i'm trying to figure out where, what's causing the issue. So, yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm wondering if it's not embedding bits of the porcelain into the titanium.

Curt: Well, see, and then i took I took that aspect out of it because I'm like, let's let's get rid of that.

jamie peacock: Okay.

Curt: um So i just I left the polishing aspect and I'm just basically like wet sanding titanium, essentially. And it's it's after that stage.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: I don't know actually tested one of just straight off the lathe yet. Anyways, I'm going to keep testing them and see what what stage is causing my issue. And then I can keep honing in on that because...

jamie peacock: Yeah. Okay.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah. It's something.

jamie peacock: Interesting.

Curt: Yeah. Like cleaning, like cleaning it before I even like go to polish it. Like, let's say like base it on the lathe and then clean the part really, really well. And then use like perfectly clean, like sandpaper and then wet sand it with perfectly clean water and then run through my process and still get the same issues.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: I'm like, Hmm, what is causing, like something is causing this. So anyway, I'll figure it out.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Hmm.

Curt: But it only, if it only affects, as

jamie peacock: What, uh, what sandpaper are you I'm assuming it's, uh, aluminum oxide.

Curt: i Yes, yes.

jamie peacock: normal soundbob, yeah.

Curt: Normal side paper. Yeah, yeah, yeah

jamie peacock: Yeah, I'm wondering if that's not conta leaving particles that are reacting to your edge, or not to your edge, to your anodizer, that's causing a reaction, yeah.

Curt: yeah. That's a good point.

jamie peacock: So you're embedding a particle, and that particle's reacting during the thing and causing a splotch because it's now reacted and left something there.

Curt: Yeah, that's a good point. never really considered that could potentially, like the paper itself could have like an oil or and ah like whatever they're using to...

jamie peacock: or even ah and a piece of the abrasive being left in the pot and that reacting in your anodizing and causing a splotch because it's reacting before the titanium.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: yeah I mean, and the the the the effect the effect is only visible on, like every other color, solid, perfect. I get paint-like results.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's green.

Curt: It's just green. Just the last color you can get.

jamie peacock: Is green the highest voltage you're running?

Curt: Totally, yeah, so it's the thickest layer, yeah.

jamie peacock: Hmm. Yeah, I think you've got something reacting at those voltages before the titanium moves.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, and it's it's funny, because i can I can watch it go through all the colors perfectly. just It literally looks like you're just like you're scrolling a color wheel on a computer, like beautiful colors, right until you hit the last one, then it gets a little wonky.

jamie peacock: You...

jamie peacock: Yeah, so you're dropping the part in with the voltage preset and then the the voltage dips and comes back up to that voltage on your power supply.

Curt: So...

Curt: I've tried it all. I've done it that way.

jamie peacock: Okay.

Curt: I've done like current limiting. I've done voltage limiting. I've done like jump in five volt increments all the way up to like a hundred volts.

jamie peacock: Okay.

Curt: I've tried. Yeah. Same thing. I was like, maybe I'm just swamping.

jamie peacock: Tried all the different things. Okay.

Curt: Yeah. And then I got really small coupons that won't swamp my power supply.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: and it's all it just that last little bit is where it all goes fucking sideways.

Curt: So trying to figure out what it is. I've known about it for like years now, um but I just, I could get around it, but I don't want to anymore.

jamie peacock: Have you tried a different etching, different anodizing solution?

Curt: ah Yes. Yes, but not recently.

jamie peacock: Okay. What are you anodizing in? Just baking soda?

Curt: I like using, I like baking soda, but I might flip back to TSP. I used to use TSP. I might go back to it again. ah

jamie peacock: Well, that would be something to test because it might be something with the anodizing solution that is fine up till that point and not everyone goes to green, so it's not a commonly documented issue.

Curt: Just to see. That's a good point.

jamie peacock: Because it might be so a case of the baking soda breaking down at those voltages or something to that effect.

jamie peacock: Like baking soda is a relatively new thing that the guys use. It used to be like lovely chemicals that'll kill you.

jamie peacock: and Like, it used to be acids that the guys used as the electrolyte. And then they switched over baking soda relatively recently. Like, I remember Grimsmo...

jamie peacock: Yeah, I remember Grimsmo switching to baking soda. And that wasn't that long ago. It was like 10 years ago.

Curt: there Yeah, trisodium phosphate is what tons people... But that's not really all that aggressive. I mean, it's it's not a great chemical. well You don't want to drink it, but...

jamie peacock: No, but... i'm john I'd say try tro at that.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: That might just be your...

jamie peacock: Simple solution. Try a different electrolyte that might solve your green issue.

Curt: I actually moved away from TSP because they were starting to add ah like an adulterant to it to basically change the color of it, which fucked with my anodizing.

Curt: So I dropped it because I couldn't tell when I was getting the good stuff or not the good stuff. But yeah, it's a good point. I'll switch to that. I'll switch to that and try and see what that is.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it would be very interesting

Curt: Or try like Well, I tried to do something dumb like Coke, like people have anodized in Coke, which is not what I would use for production. But like you could just try something wild and see if that fixes the issue.

Curt: So yeah, good idea.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah, it's a variable that you wouldn't consider because it works for all other colors. But it might just be a case that breaks down at that but at right at the end of the range, which most people are not going to.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah, well it's funny. Like, I'm not throwing shade at anybody, but i go looking at any green titanium magnetizing, and everybody, I look, and I'm like, oh, yeah, you're like I can tell that part is not clean.

Curt: I can see it's not it's not a clean green across the part. Like, you have dips where it goes to teal, and that's like, it's it's nature of the beast, but, like, um I want to get rid of that.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: So, anyway.

jamie peacock: Yeah, you want it to be correct.

Curt: Yeah, wanted to be nice. Yeah, exactly. Without having to piss around with each one for, like, Because, yeah, if you order a blue pen from me, I can do 1,000 blue pens and not worry about it.

jamie peacock: So they're actually, that's what's Tumblr now, 400 of the 5mm ones. So I had to make new fixturing for the 5 and 6mm ones.

jamie peacock: got that all done. And then my program, ah you load the fixture in one way, it does the sensor drilling or the chamfering on the one side. In that time, I can loosen that fixture and take the parts out.

Curt: Mm-hmm.

jamie peacock: One moment, please.

Curt: While Jamie chugs coughs up syrup.

jamie peacock: Yeah, fuck what they say, I must have it, I'm just drinking it now. um

Curt: but say i don't i don't think you're supposed to drink it like that.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it'll be fine. So ah while it does the one, the first side, I have enough time to loosen the other fixture, pull the eight parts out and load eight parts in, but not tighten it. Then I put it on the table. The machine comes to the park position.

jamie peacock: I take the fixture out, turn it over, put it back in, tighten it, hit go. Then I have time to tighten the eight parts and nub the little ends off and then load it in the machine. And the cycle is like a minute and five seconds.

Curt: This doesn't sound fun. Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, that doesn't sound like a fun, fun day.

jamie peacock: I literally, ah put on podcasts and I just blasted through it.

jamie peacock: It's literally just over an hour to run 62 cycles makes for 500 parts.

Curt: So you could get, you could like get into enough of a flow where you could do it and still like listen to something. like it wasn't like brain taxing. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Um, but yeah, it's like making the fixtures and everything took more time than running the parts. But also I had the fixtures just programmed already.

jamie peacock: Um, they're all done with slitting saw. So it's literally one op and then put them sideways to cross drill a hole for the little clamping fixtures. Like, yeah, it worked really, really well.

jamie peacock: So my workflow lately has been ah two self-centrings for up one. my little Zendai for OP2 with soft jaws because know I have a bunch soft jaws and they're super cheap so machine a step, machine a pocket, whatever and I'm using those for OP2 instead of my 4-inch vases because I used to put the 4-inch vases in because that's all I had soft jaws for but now I've got like I literally had my self-centrings my Zendai vase and my 5-inch chuck because I was doing some round work in the machine at once and you can like literally just flop between them super freaking easily

jamie peacock: So by the soft jaw one, like by the one that you bolt the jaws on, it's the way to go, I actually had the jaws offset and hanging out the side to do a job because I needed a bit more clearance.

jamie peacock: I'll slide it to the side. um Yeah, like the jaws I make are only, I think, 12 millimeters thick. Like if they stick out above. Some guys make like two inch thick jaws.

jamie peacock: So I've got those. i was meant to load them on the website last week and I didn't. ah I'll get them loaded on at some point. that they offell They also have a key, so when you put them in, they lock again, or they reference the edge of the jaw.

jamie peacock: So you put them with both keys on one side or both keys on the other side, and if you want to put them back in, they at least reference in the and that axis of the bus.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like if you've cut a pocket in, there'll be the pocket will at least be aligned when you put it back in there.

Curt: I know I have a, I have some fixtures in the lathe where they just, they just never leave the enclosure. Cause like, I'm like, I can never, and it's oil.

jamie peacock: i actually milled a key way into his gang block this week. because we were having shavings build up on the boring bar and then push the gang block because the gang blocks weren't keyed. So I'm like, strip it, give it to me now when I'm done with what's in the machine, I'll throw it in the four inch vase quickly, mill a keyway for you. So we mill the key into the one so that it stays where the fuck it needs to be.

jamie peacock: Yeah, because they were made by whoever had the machine before and they were made by idiots.

The stupid website I use ah has an integrated like timer system where I can like schedule products to go online at a certain time, um which would be ah perfect if it worked. They're just not precise. like it They'll kick on a minute or two either way, and in my world, that's just not good enough. So I talk to them. and This is not like a fly-by-night. This is Squarespace, and I talk to them, and I'm like, can this be better? And they're like, meh, it doesn't really work that way. I'm like, oh.

Curt: okay so anyways i i was like f it i'm like with the claude nowadays i'm like claude make me an html like timer that i can go my page that'll like it'll down count um and then it'll like and then without having to refresh the site it'll just immediately switch from once it hits zero to like a button that is linked to a page that i have hidden and that manually turns on that that i can do um anyways

Curt: So yeah, it's been ah spt me ah a bunch of code and I was able to mess with the formatting to kind of get it close enough to my, yeah, just so much better. Like I've used like third party sites in the past to do this that had, and then you don't have to refresh the page and it was clunky and it would like, it would count into the negatives and you're was like, this is dumb. So yeah.

Curt: AI for the win for that stuff. Worked great.

jamie peacock: I was using Claude's troubleshoot the Home Assistant remote access stuff yesterday to no avail, but we were making progress.

jamie peacock: um We just ran out of time. I've got a my thing for this this week I want to get it to do. I'm going to give it the manual for a T3D servo drive because they're cheap as beans from China.

jamie peacock: With servo, I want to put a like a probably a 750 watt on my fourth axis that actually matches the flange.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: um I want to put that on there and then I want to build a RS485 based controller for it. So with an absolute encoder on the on the fourth, when I tell it to home, it goes to zero every single time exactly the same.

jamie peacock: Like use the switch as a reference for the initial but I want to know like it must be right. And then I can give it two inputs. So it will go index index index.

jamie peacock: And then you put the return to home pulse and it goes back to where it was. So I just want to find out that drive supports Backlash Comp and all those fun things.

Curt: Gotcha. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: And then just a little ESP with a screen mounted on the front of my machine and a button. That's it. That's all it needs. Like super simple interface, index, and then like an index button and a home button that if I want to manually do it, I can.

jamie peacock: So I'm going to rebuild my fourth controller because...

jamie peacock: I actually haven't plugged my fourth in since I've moved. It's in the machine, I just haven't actually used it yet. And I want it a little bit faster for some shenanigans I have planned.

jamie peacock: I've got some part flipping I want to do with the fourth. So you put your pneumatic vise on the fourth, and for that I need it to be able to go both directions. You rotate your vise up sideways, grab it, flip your gripper, put the part back in the vise instead of having a flip station.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: Yeah, use your spindle as the flip station.

Curt: Okay, I get you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: That's what Matt's doing on some of his parts.

jamie peacock: So I want to try to get that workflow sorted out as well.

Curt: Yeah, that's a good idea. If you're parking, if yeah, if you're parking. work But honestly, if you're getting a spindle grip and a flip station, it's probably going to work that way too. It's not going to be like a foot high part.

jamie peacock: it's a solution for a low I.O. machine. So I'm thinking along the lines of a spring actuated gripper.

jamie peacock: So you print jaws for it, you literally slide your parts in, it holds a spring pressure. You then come up with your grip, push a plunger, it rotates 180, stays there, you grab your part and when you clamp your vice, it flicks back.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: So we have a pneumatic, a small pneumatic cylinder that just holds the lock in position.

Curt: yeah

jamie peacock: And then when you When you grip your your ah your work holding again, it'll invert the the grip station for or the flip station for you, so that you can literally run your machine with two pneumatic outputs.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: You've got your spindle gripper and your vase.

Curt: Right. Right.

Curt: i I always love the applications of like using the spindle to like, like when Grimsmall was doing it to like read screw heads to determine like what patterns to put on.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: I love doing that, like using no extra whatever, it just the smarts.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: the It's cool. It's cool. Or like you said, pushing levers and buttons to to move things like that's cool.

jamie peacock: No, it's definitely, yeah. I know a company in Japan makes mechanical actual mechanical flip stations like that, where you buy it, it's a 15-degree station, and every time you push the button, it moves 15 degrees.

Curt: Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've seen that too.

jamie peacock: I was thinking of building something along the lines of that, but basically printed.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Like, it doesn't need to be more than that. it can just be a printed thing.

jamie peacock: trying to lower the barrier to people being able to spindle grip stuff.

jamie peacock: So, yeah, that's in the word. feel like mulling over that, how I'm going integrate that. Because, well, yeah, that's the goal, like spindle gripping for more people.

jamie peacock: you've got the machine ready if you can do spindle orientation bonus um like most or any machine that's got a bt30 or anything else is going to have spindle orientation it's all it's all changer

jamie peacock: And if you've got through spindle air, it makes life easy. um If you don't, you then need some IO to be able to do things like I know Joshua is using his air blast output.

jamie peacock: So M7 has to grip his chuck because that's the only output he has available on that.

jamie peacock: sova So it's only output he has available on that machine. And that's a problem with all the machines.

jamie peacock: I mean, my index for my fourth axis uses the chip conveyor on my machine, the chip conveyor output.

jamie peacock: because there, I don't a chip conveyor.

jamie peacock: I've got forward reverse, so there's my two outputs, and they're on M codes already. So that's how i do my indexing on my on my fourth axis, and wo it's done, but it works, so it's not done.

Curt: Tell me about new coolant tests.

jamie peacock: Okay, so FlexiLube.

Curt: I don't know. i don't know what that means. So.

jamie peacock: So FlexiLube, the coolant I use, ah switch to the MC coolant. I fucking love it. The finishes I'm getting in aluminum are wild. Like, so much better than what I was getting.

Curt: Hmm. Ooh,

jamie peacock: It's got quite a high mineral oil content in the coolant. They've developed a new coolant specifically for aluminum.

Curt: o

jamie peacock: And they're like, we need people to test this. We will put it in your machine for free.

Curt: oh okay

jamie peacock: We just need feedback, please. Because not a lot of people just run aluminium here. And I run, I would say, probably 90% aluminium in my machine. Like, we do odds and ends. We do a bit of copper, bit of tool steel every and now and again. Like, it'll work for that, but it is tuned for aluminium.

jamie peacock: So I'm like, cool. They're dropping off a pail of it this week. And I need to suck out the machine and put in the new coolant and give it a test drive for them. So we will see.

jamie peacock: Hopefully it works well and doesn't do anything stupid. But yeah, free... Free coolant fill. So now i need to go buy more buckets because I'm going to put my coolants into buckets because i'm not going to just turf it. It's still pretty good.

jamie peacock: Put it in buckets, store it for a week or two just to make sure this new coolant isn't back totally retarded. um

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: And then we can use it to top off other machines.

Curt: Oh, okay. Yeah.

jamie peacock: But i wanted yeah I just want to have it on hand just for it a bit in case something stupid happens. But yeah, they've developed a new coolant for Ali specifically. So we will see how it works.

jamie peacock: because i use their i used to use their CU2, which actually wasn't a perfect match for my application.

Curt: Yeah. That's.

jamie peacock: And then I was getting staining on 7075.

jamie peacock: So they switched me, or switched to MC, they're even more expensive coolants, and 7075 comes with them magically. I get a little bit of staining on 6082 if the coolant is left to evaporate um on the parts. So it's not really a problem in production. It's like my fixtures have a bit of staining on them, but the performance is just out of this world.

Curt: Nice, nice.

jamie peacock: Like I'm getting stupidly good finishes with it. So yeah, but now we're going to see, maybe the new aluminium one's even better.

Curt: Cool, yeah, no, let me know, I'm curious.

jamie peacock: So we we'll y good should get that in the next week or so. And then, yeah, I also got a new toolsetter. Because remember a few weeks ago, my toolsetter was dumbing.

jamie peacock: New one arrived, but I don't like the wire coming out the back of it. I'm like, that is going to fail and break. So tomorrow morning, I've got a pneumatic fitting that I'm mill a hex into and put a grub screw in that'll go over the electrical connector, get locked to the electrical connector, and I'm going to put a piece of eight millimeter pneumatic hose that runs out of the machine so that the cable's protected.

jamie peacock: And then I need to kind of get one of these working because I need a new ah new mount for the toolsetter because my mount is different.

jamie peacock: But I'm trying to find a model of the thing. It's a WP600. I'm trying to find a model of it, a 3D model, so I can design a Bukkake shield for it. ah Before it even goes in, I want a shield on it.

Curt: They're like, yeah So I just filled up this form and they're like, oh what do you want? I was like, what can I buy? They're like, anything. i'm like so like I can buy like a 55-gallon drum of hydrochloric acid. They're like, ah yeah, if we have it in stock.

jamie peacock: yeah it's wild but ja yeah make sure it's above board but yeah that's freaking wild oh i got feedback on a custom extruded aluminium tube

jamie peacock: five weeks for a DA, and then have to buy 250 kilos at a time.

jamie peacock: We have to order 600 kilos per batch, so non-issue.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so waiting for the go-ahead on the job and the deposits so we can order material.

jamie peacock: Six meter lengths. And then like Carl and were chatting about it, we did the maths on how many parts we can run out of a half meter bar. And it's like 8.2 parts or 7.6 parts. I'm like, okay, so we're going to optimize our cutting to make it because we can fit like a, with those parts, you could probably fit nearly a 600 mil bar into the Emco.

jamie peacock: We're going to be like, okay, how many parts can we get that we have a 30 millimeter remnant? And then we're going to cut the bars to that length to optimize to get the most parts and the shortest remnant.

Curt: Right, gotcha, gotcha.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so that should be ah should be a fun one.

Curt: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: We have to buy a left hand threading tool. um Because of the way the EMCO's turret works, it'll you have to run a left hand tool and spin backwards if you want it to lock the turret. like hard lock it.

Curt: Oh, OK.

jamie peacock: So I've always threaded other way around, but it's always been small threads. So the turret has enough locking force against the motor.

Curt: Sure.

jamie peacock: um But now we're threading like 2.5 pitch. So we need to use the other way around. So we go, let's spin the thing backwards, run backwards, like all the fun, all the fun shit we have to do.

Curt: Right, right.

jamie peacock: But yeah, we get that production code dialed and then it's literally load bar hit go, parts fall out finished.

Curt: Nice. That's awesome.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: And there's another 10,000 order.

jamie peacock: And those we make we make a bit more money on, so it's not not horrid.

jamie peacock: Hopefully enough money to justify buying another lathe.

jamie peacock: Because i think that is I think that is the direction.

jamie peacock: Colin, I've been discussing it. I think that's the direction we need to go is find another small one-inch bore lathe and just niche down on those size parts.

Curt: Mm-hmm.

jamie peacock: Put another lathe in. It's going to cost us, if we do another retrofit, it's going to cost us under 100,000 Rand, which is using my Paralyzer a lot today. that's two thousand So under $6,000, we can have a machine running the same controller with all new stuff, like running servos, running servo spindle.

jamie peacock: We may as well try find a machine to do that.

Curt: Yeah, yeah

jamie peacock: We now have space to do it. And then I would look at putting like a one and half meter bar feeder on it.

Curt: yeah. Yeah. Like said, automating a lathe so much better. Yeah.

jamie peacock: hundred 100%. So yeah, I want to go that route. But now if we've got coal running production flat out, it gives us the budget to put another machine in that he can it can run by itself.

Curt: Right, right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so I think that is the the direction we need to go in.

Curt: Cool. Yuck.

jamie peacock: But we will see in the coming months.

Curt: It sounds like a good plan.

jamie peacock: Yeah, no, we'll see in the coming months because like we've got production orders now.

jamie peacock: Goodway is basically booked out for the next two months on one job.

jamie peacock: yeah And then the guys like make them and we will pay you for it. Like just you've got an order for 10,000. It's meant to be two and or thousand of each every month. to Just make them. Make them an invoice.

jamie peacock: Like, you know, just make the parts. We'll put them on the shelf and we'll order them more because they're now carrying stock so that there's no just no disruption to sp supply.

jamie peacock: so they're going to carry two or three months stock on their shelves and then we just keep running one month's worth parts and now it's gone from like eight days to five days to make two and half thousand parts yeah because we cut cycle time so yeah it's it's been interesting adjusting to the high volume production stuff
