Hello and welcome back to our podcast with Rhiannon and Jeremy. You're two favorite people ever to listen to. We have been having a hectic week and we are just jumping on because we want to find the time to continue to chat to you guys yeah and chat to each other.

Weekly Recap & Parenting Life

00:00:48
Speaker
Also don't mind the background sounds. You're going to hear a little Romy. He's graing grunting around. He's trying to roll.
00:00:55
Speaker
He's having a bit of trouble, but yeah, you're gonna hear some weird noise in the background.

Understanding Children's Immunity

00:00:59
Speaker
We wanted to jump on and talk a little bit about kids immune. It sounds like it's quite compromised at the moment with all the sicknesses going around. I think we've touched on it before a little bit. We did talk a little bit about, I don't know if we talked much about the kids. but Probably a little bit because they are the germ factories that bring home, and give you wet kisses and pass on those germs every day. Bloody daycare, I tell you. We have, just on a personal note, we have been tossing up whether we're going to send the kids a daycare and they haven't been in like months. They've been like once or twice in the last couple of months. So we didn't send them because Romy was born and we didn't want him to get heapsick. And then we decided to
00:01:41
Speaker
send them and then obviously they got sick because it was in the thick winter and we were like stuff that because then Romy just catches it and then we kept them off again in for like a couple more months which just makes our life so much harder. It's so tough like what do you do like it's either you send them to daycare for a week and then have them home for another week and you may as well just have them home but but there's things you can do if you can't don't have that opportunity to take your kids to work or have them around you there's definitely things you can do to try and help boost that immune system which we have been working really hard on because when we do send them back, we want to make sure they're like geared up so they're not hopefully going to catch it or the duration's really low. It does make it harder with Romy because you can't give him anything because he's too young. But,
00:02:25
Speaker
i have been doing things and working on like through my breast milk so then he's supported and thankfully he is breastfed so he's getting all those beautiful antibodies but yes have you noticed that your kids are like always getting sick because i hear it time and time again there's so much we can do not only for the kids but also obviously for adults Children, they're a little bit harder to ah work out what they need. You need more in-depth, like you need a proper consultation with them, but just an acute immune is enough. But so we can work out dosage for them because you want to be taking the right amount of supplements that are therapeutically dosed.
00:02:59
Speaker
to work on whatever you're working on. so you don't want it like Kids come in all different shapes and sizes as adults do but you want to make sure you're able to give them the therapeutic dose for their size. So that's why the consultations are really important for kids and that's why with our virtual immune consultation we didn't actually created children's one it's only for adults because kids need a little bit extra attention so they need a consultation but again the acute immune for kids it's like a 10-15 minute consultation we're just going to go over the case find out exactly what they need what their symptoms are and go from there but then we're going to get that dosage right important super important yeah for dosages kids yes and you want it to work and you don't want to give them too much because they are also different so why do kids get sick so often
00:03:47
Speaker
That is a great question.

Boosting Children's Immune Systems Naturally

00:03:50
Speaker
Sorry about that. Jeremy is just cracking me up. As always, always making a laugh. That's why she married me. I'm just too funny. Actually. So why do kids always get sick? Kids are always usually getting sick, depending on their age, but because their little immune systems are not developed, so they're still quite immature and learning. I like to look at it as a bit of a learning, like when the kids are in daycare, the immune system's in daycare as well, going to daycare. Learning about all those bugs, because we build up that resilience, our body's very smart, once we get a bug, build up those antibodies, and then next time we come in contact with that, we're ready to fight it off.
00:04:27
Speaker
So essentially as adults our bodies have gone through like most of that and obviously you can still some bugs that are really strong can take you down especially if you're not doing any herbal support or nutrients but yeah it comes down to mainly yes they're very germy kids but also their immune systems are just learning they're very immature. Okay and what can we do to like help that or prevent that? Yes look sometimes it is look absolutely supplement wise so specific herbs and nutrients depending what they're needing so Like off the top of my head, I've got herbs that are great for coughs or I've got ones that are more for upper respiratory, like mucus congestion. There's nutrients that are specific for fighting off infection or ones that'll help to like break down the mucus. And then from a, if you can take it back to avoiding, to not went like to um starting before they've gotten sick, there's things you can do to actually build up that immune system, sort of fight off the bugs that won't actually take them down.
00:05:22
Speaker
But sometimes when the children's immune systems, they can be super compromised as well because it's not just about the learning, I suppose. Sometimes when babies are born, depending on how they've come into the world, there's so many things that can affect their immune system. Like so many women have to be on antibiotics in pregnancy or when they're born, they do IV antibiotics for maybe things like strep B.
00:05:49
Speaker
that sort of issue it could be something like that or it could be that there's an infection present and they just want to give antibiotics so then it's all running through the bloodstream yes it's going to affect the baby as well sometimes when babies are born they need antibiotics themselves and sometimes it's for very important reasons and sometimes it's just a let's try this because the temperature was a bit up or whatever it might be. So that is going to really affect that um gut, that microbiome, which 70% of that immune system is in the gut. So we want to make sure that that gut is right. Also then when they're chronically sick, getting sick over and over again, like again, say for example, Romy,
00:06:27
Speaker
He could continue to get sick if we were just kept sending the kids to daycare. So it was like a really bad bug season and they kept bringing home bugs that maybe didn't take them down because they're taking their subs. But then they keep giving it to Romy and he just is sick and has a cough for months and months on end and just not getting better. He can then just have that wiped immune system. So when he gets a bit older, his immune system isn't as strong. Right. Okay. And what about um antibiotics? You know, like a kid's on antibiotics over and over again.
00:06:57
Speaker
Yes, really wipe out that gut microbiome, that immunity, and it takes a while to rebuild. Like the antibiotics can really wipe it out when it takes so much longer than that thick wipeout to build it back up, but you can absolutely build it up. So many people are on the train of, yes, I've taken antibiotics. Yes, I need to take probiotics, which is fabulous, but there's so many different strains of probiotics.
00:07:21
Speaker
You want to be taking the right strains again at the right dose. You want to make sure they're alive and it's not just about probiotics, although they're a big part. You want to make sure that that gut microbiome is thriving. Yeah, absolutely.
00:07:34
Speaker
We just want, well, happy kids and a happy family. There's nothing worse than your kid getting sick, you getting sick, you still have to do all your normal duties, plus the happy sick kid. Oh my God, parenting when your kids are sick sucks. And then also parenting when you're sick and the kids are sick, that is just a doublewe the worst. yeah And then there's things like gastro, yeah which God, no one wants to talk about. It's horrible, but again, you can build back from that. Romy sounds like a little pug when he breathes really heavy. That's so cute. This is our little pug guy. So you'll hear him in the background.
00:08:10
Speaker
um guess good He seriously comes in. He's our little extra. He's just the best little accessory. So for moms that are breastfeeding, fabulous. We can do a lot through the breast milk. For moms that are bottle feeding, we can still get probiotics into the little ones that way and some other nutrients depending. And we can also make sure the formula you're choosing is amazing and supportive of their little immune system. So there i is still stuff you can do, but Yeah. Prevention's better than cure, right? Big time. So always trying to be on the front foot. Like you know the winter season is coming. Like obviously we're getting closer to it being spring, yay. But when you know that the sicknesses are coming or there's sicknesses all around, we keep immune subs in our cupboard. In winter or as it starts to go like autumn before winter, we'll start to take our immune supplements.
00:08:58
Speaker
and we'll get them into our system. So

Gut Health and Birth Methods

00:09:00
Speaker
they were building up that immune system before we start. Look, we have been blessed that we have had wonderful births and I haven't had like really traumatic ones. I've done a lot of work around that as well. Obviously Winnie is a different part of that. She was just on her own, but with my living babies, it hasn't been traumatic, which is great. Cause there are actually studies studies that show because the brain and the immune system are not fully formed at birth,
00:09:27
Speaker
are the two-way interaction between the brain and the immune system actually makes it possible for childhood physiological stresses to affect the immune system development, which in turn can affect brain development and its long-term functioning. So it is so hard when you've gone through a traumatic birth. It's not the be all, end all. There's so much you could do, but you want to be supporting your child if you know that you've gone through that and supporting yourself, because it's a lot. It's a lot. Yeah, it is a lot.
00:09:56
Speaker
as parents. yeah yeah And then C-section birth, obviously sometimes we need to have those C-sections. It is what it is. Emergency C-section, or sometimes you've had a traumatic birth before, so you end up having choosing a selective C-section. Again, it is what it is. You choose the way you birth, and that will be perfect for you and Bob. But just making sure that you know what you can do to support yourself in that, and always weighing up those pros and cons, like with anything in life.
00:10:23
Speaker
We definitely made a plan A, like our perfect birthing strategy and then having a plan B as well if things do go wrong. Like it's always good to have something in place. absolutely Like after we did that birthing class, oh yeah we we did strategy yeah converse and we did the strategy for like the perfect way to go in.
00:10:42
Speaker
Plan B was like still having the seeding. Oh yeah, do the seeding. If you guys don't know what the seeding is, it's when you have a C-section delivery and then you swab the vaginal microflora and you pop it on the baby's like orifice, like mouth.
00:10:59
Speaker
You can even put it like nose, eyes, ears, because that's what all gets touched yeah on the way out. And then just kickstart their immune system, right? Yeah. yeah And they've got microbiome um and just a very important part. So if you are having a C-section, that's a great thing you can do. also delayed cord clairvoyance with the other one we've done that with all our babies so allowing a lot of that iron and i think it's vitamin k is it vitamin k though i don't know you get the vitamin k injection but if you do the delayed cord clairvoyance yeah does it help with that yeah i think it does yeah anyway i'd have to double check on that but definitely the iron yeah and allowing all that blood to go back into the baby like there's a reason
00:11:37
Speaker
that it pulsates and pulsates that blood straight back into above and then it turns white and then you can cut it. They're all they're so fast to cut and chop and just get them just allow, just give a bit of time. yeah The other thing I was going to say with the C-sections is what that cesarean bursts also prevent important bacterial functions like we were talking about that are passed on when they come through that vaginal canal. So yes, that impacts immune gut health because obviously that should all go down into your digestion and give those little digestive cells are helping hand essentially yeah but again you can do that seeding and then everyone's happy if you have to go down that road but yeah definitely they have done a lot of studies on the c-section and a lot more of those babies are suffering with more issues like immune disorders allergies that sort of thing so yes if you don't have to get a c-section amazing but if you do end up having one there's some things that you can do
00:12:32
Speaker
planning prevention And same as with like breastfeeding is sometimes ah formula feeding can be avoided, but the women just do not have the support and around their mental health. So I love to support moms postpartum, not only for that healing side of things. with they're beautiful babies but also because sometimes they just need that extra support maybe it's milk supply we've got a herb for that we've honestly got a herb for everything but it also might be that the mum just so stressed out like had a new baby it rocks you it's like a whole change throws your world upside down in the best way possible but you need that extra support so it might be working on like anti-anxiety herbs or it might be specific nutrients not eating enough drinking too much coffee like there's so many little
00:13:19
Speaker
players yes so many factors there absolutely so things that we want to do to essentially boost our little ones at home some things you can do is making sure that you're eating probiotic rich foods kefir sauerkraut umbucha It's really good.

Diet and Supplements for Immune Support

00:13:42
Speaker
Making sure we're really supporting that gut. Any gut issues, like lots of diarrhea, like screaming a lot because they got a sore tummy, vomiting unnecessarily as they get a bit older. Just feeling off like you need to investigate that.
00:13:57
Speaker
the gut is the place where it all starts so make sure you reach out and sometimes it can be just as easy as getting that gut microbiome right and then that filters into their behavior how they're supporting and absorbing their nutrients and so many other factors their their mood for sure that's a big link there because that happy hormone serotonin produced in the gut so you want to make sure the gut's right to then have happy kids don't they say that your stomach's the second brain Yeah, I love that. It's so true. Second brain. Because it makes you feel so emotional, you know what I mean? Like when you're stressed. Yeah, you get butterflies. It's so true. Your second brain, sometimes they don't quite compute and talk to each other, do they? And I guess a lot of people don't realise that your gut is more exposed to the outside world because it's absorbing. Yeah. Like it's designed to just whatever you put in to absorb it. I know. And then like you'd think your skin would be more, but it has barriers against it, the outside world. Yeah. When you're stoned, it's just like, let me in. Yeah, comment.
00:14:51
Speaker
whether you like it or not. I always make up for the kids a compound. So we do a lot of obviously compounding. If you're not a client of mung bean, if you are, you would know. And we use like some really good high dose vitamin C and zinc. And we use a lot of NAC, which is really amazing. It's dose dependent though. So you don't want to be self prescribing, but it's a beautiful antioxidant to really essentially support that immune system. Plus so much more magnesium, you know, iron's really important. What else have we got? to die Yes, so other things you can do at home around diet that I think would be amazing for all kids, but it is really good for immune, definitely sugar reduction. Wow, the kids love sugar. They're fiends for it, aren't they? They'll seek it out and nowll they'll try and get as much as they can. They also, I feel they know the parent that's like the weakest link and they'll work them hard. The kids will always try and get, you know, something out of Jeremy. The weakest link.
00:15:51
Speaker
They know they'll be like, do we're not asking mum, but we'll go ask dad. But yes, making sure that we are minimising sugar because sugar feeds disease in general, but it's not good for that immune system. yeah Processed foods, they love black. Kids always love lollies and things. So just being conscious at reducing that, because that's also going to bring on more of that inflammation in the gut.
00:16:14
Speaker
And then obviously high doses of inflammation and sugar are going to affect the gut microbiome, which in turn is going to affect that immune system. Also forgot to mention about Amigas, how important they are for the immune system. yeah We love, yes, we love a little bit of cod liver.
00:16:31
Speaker
We do cod liver with our kids and we often prescribe it in clinic as well. Cod liver is a beautiful omega that is, it tastes much better now as well. Like ah back in the day, you would have heard your parents talk about cod liver being so disgusting because that was like probably warm to be honest and off the spoon and no flavouring.
00:16:51
Speaker
Now they flavor them naturally. And the kids like it. They actually enjoy taking it. Yes. And a lot of my clients, the kids will just take it straight out of the syringe or off the spoon and they'll be fine. But sorry, going back, circling back, the cod liver has a beautiful natural source of vitamin A, which is so good for that immune system, and vitamin D as well. So both of those just, again, supercharged and Amiga itself, again, bringing down that information. Also, high protein foods, making sure that they're getting in. A lot of kids are lacking protein with a lot of other things, but definitely lacking a lot of protein. Honestly, adults in general. Women, only gym people are really getting in enough. Through supplementation. You've always got a protein shake. absolutely It's also important for so many other things like amino acids are essential for the growth and the repair of the body tissues as we know, but it's including the cells and tissues of the immune system. Crucial for the production of the immune cells like T cells. Got a little burp in there. He's such a good burp, our little Romy. T cells and B cells, antibodies and other components that are involved in the immune system.
00:17:57
Speaker
So essentially don't wait. Don't wait until they're sick. Yes, it's never too late and we can do some things amazing. So many things to help them get better faster and shorten that duration. But you can also work on getting to them to avoid. Avoid it all together. Prevention is better than cure. Absolutely, absolutely. So yes, I would suggest for kids, get them in for an acute immune consultation.
00:18:19
Speaker
for, and then you can talk to one of our beautiful practitioners and they can get you set straight, especially for like chronic cases. They're always getting sick and they need that support. Like I've seen such amazing kids results, yeah but, and then for adults, you've got the choice. You can book in with one of our practitioners, have a quick immune consultation where we just talk about that immune system and get you feeling good. Again, doesn't need to be that you're sick can be just for prevention or that there's lots of people sick around you and you're worried.
00:18:45
Speaker
about getting sick or you can do our new virtual immune consultation. Honestly so easy. I love the fact that you don't have to book in with someone because you can do it like in the middle of the night like oh no it's you know nine o'clock at night you're getting a sore throat and you're like oh my god like I obviously can't get in with a practitioner until tomorrow that's only if we've got any spots available. yeah So you can just jump on your phone, do the acute immune consult, then you can get the supplement sent out to you the following day with some herbs and they're going to be your best friend for that. Sure, absolutely. Yep. Those are the best. Yes. Although the adult herbs are not delicious, the kids' herbs, they are in a different base. They do taste sweeter and we can start we start usually lower dose and work our way up. So if you've had herbs before and you're like, my kid won't ever have that,
00:19:30
Speaker
Evie can be so picky and she would just take them straight on her tongue. And there's other things you can do. We've got the gelatin, that natural gelatin thing. For the gummies? Yeah, the gummies. We can put a little bit in there. Yes, absolutely. Love those gummies. We've always, we've got lots up our sleeve to help you get them in.
00:19:46
Speaker
Just know you don't have to be on that rollercoaster of sickness every week. There's help out there. Where the help? We can help you. Let us help you. So yeah, if you've got any questions or concerns, reach out. I'm always on DM, so I'm fine. Thanks. Bye. And that's a wrap on today's dose of wellness. I'm Rhiannon, your fertility fairy godmother.
