Okay, welcome back. So we're going to start with our spotlight, our bookshelf spotlight. um What are we all reading and watching this month?

I'm still working through rereading ACOTAR for my book club. We just finished Aqua War and Frost and Starlight. so we're starting Silver Flames next week, my favorite. So i'm very excited for that.

And I'm also reading Babel by ah RF Kuang. And that actually inspired my first long form essay that's going to go on our brand new sub stack. It's about the Odyssey and the nature of translation.

um so I'm really excited for that to come out when it does um it it the whole book is just really really fascinating I specifically took a class in college on um the English empire and this is set like right in the middle of the peak British empire and all of the terrible colonialism that's happening and it's taken through the lens of

these kids at this like semi-magical university and using translation to do magic. And so like there's these great long monologues from their professors about like the spirit of a translation and con conveying like the emotion and the intent behind a text versus like a literal word for word translation.

So it's actually really timely that I was, I'm reading that book while the Odyssey is coming out and there's all this discourse about like um the quality of, of Emily Wilson's translation, the quality of Nolan's translation and version of it. So really timely read, but it's very, very good so far. It's very dense, very like heavy on the soul talking about like colonialism and empire and and racism is very heavy. um So it's a heavy read, but I think it's really important and it's really, really well written. So highly recommend, I'm not even done with it yet, but highly recommend everybody.

Well, I am currently kind of in a reading slump. I have like nothing on my list right now. As my cohorts can see on my on our sheet here, it's definitely um not been easy to find something new to read. And at the end of like I finished some series, I um ran out of things that I was reading. so um I think I might have to pick up that Babel one though. I've heard really great things about RF Quan's writing overall and my book club that we were attending before I got super busy with all the jobs and baby stuff was reading the other book by them, Katabasis or however they pronounce it, which is about a descent into hell basically kind of journey. And I really want to read that

So first off, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is continuing its record-breaking box office run, surpassing the domestic lifetime earnings of its previous literary adaptation Oppenheimer, of his previous literary adaptation Oppenheimer, in just 13 days.

Based on Homer's ancient epic poem, The Odyssey joins Oppenheimer as another example of how powerful source material from page can translate into major cinematic events, proving that book adaptations remain a driving force at the box office. And listeners, this episode should be coming out in between our two Odyssey episodes, so make sure you're listening to those.

Really cool to see an adaptation like this big at the box office. Like I think books are easier to get out into the world than movies are. There's a lot less of a like upfront cost factor. So it's easier to get original ideas put out in book form. And so like, we're always wanting more original ideas and film. And I think like probably the easiest and my, our opinion, best way to do that is to take original idea books and translate them to film. So it was really awesome to see ah an adaptation and especially like

Best drama series. slow horses based on mick heron's slough house spy novel series this also got nominations for gary oldman for his portrayal of jackson lamb jack loudon for his role as river cartwright and jonathan pierce as a guest actor for his role as david cartwright this show received nine nominations total A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on george R. R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, received nine total nominations, including costumes.

The long awaited World War Two adaptation stars real life sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning in their first film together with Michael Morris directing the TriStar production.

And so I just, I don't want this to be another thing that she has to look at and say like, all these people took advantage of me and like mistreated me and misinterpreted me. And I i feel like I trust John Chu now after Wicked and how how highly he was spoken of by Ariana and Cynthia after that movie. Like, I feel like this is ah the right match for for them to get that the story across.

It really was interesting to to see the story from that angle and really get to dig into some of those moments that you only saw on the news or you know things like that that were ah deeper than ah than we ever saw.

And to me, it was a very like wishy-washy, like non-answer. But he like can reaffirmed that like, I'm in the room. I'm approving these changes. I am like, it's okay by me that they're doing these things, you know, for the sake of getting it put out on on in a new medium on TV in this case. um And so it's like, you know, all right, fine.

I think that the the fourth wing was... decent I have my problems with it too, but I think the story can be good and I think the film will be a cool idea. But most of her stuff that is going to be coming is going to be in this contemporary romance area. So I don't know.

I've read a couple of them or maybe one other one other than Fourth Wing, but they're decent. And I don't know. I'm not a big romance reader overall, so I don't know how to compare it in my mind to other things.

But out of what I've read, the one at least the one I've read, one or two I've read, we're good and though they should make pretty good ah adaptations, but there's definitely more that hasn't been adapted from her than has. So um we'll see if she keeps this trend of, of continuing to bring things to the screen.
