Hello and welcome to episode number two of the Two Guys One Screen podcast. My name is Nick. And I'm Gerald.

Review Announcement: 'Cuckoo'

00:00:10
Speaker
And today we have a review for you on the new release, Cuckoo, starring Hunter Shafer.

Recent Physical Media Pickups

00:00:18
Speaker
But before that, we're going to get into a little bit of our physical media pickups over the course of the week, and then we'll give you a full play-by-play review. So spoiler alert, and we'll say it again later. Spoiler alert.
00:00:31
Speaker
If you haven't seen it, come back later, please. We need followers. um Gerald, I think we'll start with you. What did you get this week? All right. I got some absolute bangers this week. I got Paddington. Hold on. Stop here. Paddington. I got this movie called Roller Coaster. Apparently it's a thriller about a dude bombing roller coasters.
00:01:00
Speaker
Shut out terrorism. Yeah. no
00:01:07
Speaker
ah We might review that for the pod somewhere down the line. Sure. I got Halloween 2 on 4K because Screen Factory was doing a sale.

Robin Williams Tribute

00:01:17
Speaker
The Screen Factory sale. God, they bankrupt. Dangerous. I got this movie called Midway on 4K Steelbook. I'm assuming it's about the Battle of Midway. Bombs and shit. Who put that out?
00:01:31
Speaker
Lionsgate. Lionsgate W. But it's not a first pressing, so I'm kind of sad. Eh, you know, you win some, you lose some. I got Monkey Man for $10, which is a steal. On 4K? No, just Blu-ray. That's fine. But still. But $10 for a brand new movie that just came out on Blu-ray as a win. It's a big dub. And then ah to top it all off,
00:01:54
Speaker
RV with Robin Williams Speaking of Robin Williams. I saw on the internet today. We're recording this Monday, August 12th He died 10 years ago today Yeah, I saw that it kind of made me upset. Yeah, I actually Remember, I don't want to my 9-11 moment, but I remember where I was when he died like the news broke and like where I was sitting ah But RIP to the goat Yeah, my parents were still together
00:02:26
Speaker
Oh, fuck. All right. Um, that was it for your pickups, right? Uh, yeah. Um, all right. So my pickup this week was actually, I don't want to call it a gift from you, but it was shit that you found for me and sent to me. Uh, a couple of them were gifts. Couple, a couple of little extras in there.
00:02:48
Speaker
I could have fucking charged it, but I didn't, you know? Also, while also while we're here, ah the package that I sent Joey talked about last week is still not there, but it's in my state. The ETA is today. We were hoping we'd get there before our recording, but that didn't happen. ah So mail comes around here anywhere between one and six. All right. um All right. So what I got.
00:03:11
Speaker
inside out the first one on Blur, which I didn't have. You know, I was hoping to watch that before a second one came out, but you know, we're both a little late on the mail. So I guess I'll watch that at some point. So I think my new rule is going to be as soon as, cause I can fit six movies into a bubble mailer. So right every time you get six movies, I'm just going to send it. Six is a good, a good rule. Yeah.
00:03:35
Speaker
Um, scream for scream for one of my, in my top three for screen movies in the franchise. I have one through three, four, five, and I just need six, but I'm in no rush to get six. Cause I'll be honest and you haven't seen it. Scream six kind of ass. Shout out Jen over. Oh, she's in that. Yeah. I'd fuck Jen over. Yeah.
00:04:00
Speaker
Um, um Interview with a Vampire, very funny story on Interview with a Vampire. Gerald and I have a shared notes app where we both write down what we were looking for and I put Interview with a Vampire and then like later that day he sends me a Snapchat of his haul. I was fucking looking for that but and I was fucking with myself. But he did send it to me free of charge so shout out to you for being a real friend. Yeah, I didn't care that much. I wanted it but it wasn't like You know, a big deal, right? The next two are gifts. Uh, the first one is the Goonies. Uh, that movie's kind of mid. I'm not going to lie to you. I think as a kid, it's probably great, but as a 26 year old male, it's not great. Yeah. If you were born in the eighties and like grew up with it, it's probably way better than it is, but sure.
00:04:50
Speaker
Uh, Jaws two, three, and four, which, you know, the digital copy I had already gotten from you via

Vinyl and Pre-orders Discussion

00:04:58
Speaker
Snapchat or something. And then I was about to sell that same code that you sent in the physical copy online. And I was like, Oh, I already use this. So I'm a little retarded. Uh, I w I've seen Jaws one, obviously I watched Jaws two. It's fine. I heard three and four, not great. Uh, I'm going to watch three in about a week.
00:05:19
Speaker
ah I like three. Four is terrible. Okay. Four is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. In your life. In my life. um The next one is super late. Not even super late, actually. ah The Criterion release of Freaks. ah That is a three-pack. It's Freaks, The Mystic, and The Unknown. I started to watch The Mystic, and then I turned it off, not because it was bad, just because I was tired, so I will have to try to watch that again.
00:05:48
Speaker
I'll be honest, the only reason to buy that it for is for freaks. Freaks is very good. Because before this, it was only on DVD. So Criterion really ah stepped up their game. But $70, by the way, they wanted $70 for the three movies and you're only buying it for freaks.
00:06:07
Speaker
But I got it for half off, so fine we weed it's Weed. Yeah, it's definitely a win. Three movies, criteria and collection. I'm excited to revisit Freaks, possibly for the podcast. For sure. um The next

'Cuckoo' - Theater Experience and Initial Thoughts

00:06:21
Speaker
one, I thought you gifted me, but it turns out I paid you money for this. No recollection. The Wolfman remake from 2010. Guess what, guys? I watched this movie yesterday. It's ass. I fell asleep twice.
00:06:35
Speaker
Even with ah Anthony Hopkins in it, it's bad. Here's my thing. And this is maybe a little bit of a hot take. Anthony Hopkins is always in a movie where he plays a dad and he's always great, but the movies always suck. Yes. I'm looking at you for, I'll be honest. The first one. Uh, and the second one, I know I'm probably taking this a little out of context, but I don't want Hannibal Lecter as my dad.
00:07:02
Speaker
No, but also, well, you're probably going to watch it. I don't want to ruin it for you or the listeners. Um, so the Wolfman watched that movie's ass. Uh, then you were kind enough to send me a Blu-ray five pack of the Jurassic park franchise. Just missing the last one. Uh, again, this is one of the ones that I had to digi code already. And then when I opened it, I saw it in there and I was like, Oh, digi code. And I was like, this is the same exact same one. Same.
00:07:29
Speaker
No, actually more of the story. I'm retarded. Actually, that one's not the same because the. The digi that I gave you was from my five pack steelbook. Which now your. Your other friend found the same store, same store. I traded it into and she bought it for $30 and was kind of mad that I told her it was mine and I could have just gave it to her for free. Shout out. Oh, I know you're listening. Please listen.
00:08:00
Speaker
Please listen, we're begging. Fuck you, Mark.
00:08:08
Speaker
No, shout out, Mark. Kind of. Yeah. Fucking kind of shout out, Mark. Fake Canadian that you are. What? agree Do you sound so fucking weird when he talks?

In-depth Review of 'Cuckoo'

00:08:21
Speaker
The next one, you snapped me randomly. ah The movie's called To Die For with Nicole Kidman. It was a criteria and you found it at your local movie store for $10. And I was like, I've seen this everywhere, i just get it for me. I did in fact watch To Die For. Is it good? It is a little horny. um It's okay, it's fine. I gave it a three star. <unk>s not It's not terrible, but it's not great. Tangent here, but on the subject of horniness,
00:08:52
Speaker
We talked about Jaws. I finally read Jaws. Like the book. Well, audiobook, but same thing. That book is way too horny for its own good. I didn't know there was a book on Jaws. Oh, it was a book first. Yep, didn't know that. Same with Jurassic Park. But there's a whole chapter that's basically smut. What a smut.
00:09:18
Speaker
Oh, those are sex books that people listen to to like, you know, get off, get off, I guess. Is Smut a acronym? I don't know. I don't think so. So I don't know the last time you watch Jaws, but you know, chief Brody, obviously the main character and Hooper, the marine biologist that they get to come and help with the shark. I think our favorite character in enjoy our favorite character, but fuck him in the book. This guy's a dickhead. Okay. So in the book there, uh, Brody and his wife are having marital issues.
00:09:50
Speaker
Like they just don't, they don't love each other. They don't fuck. They don't do anything. And then when Hooper gets there, his wife actually like dated his brother back in the day. So this, this bitch, all right, fuck this bitch. Fuck you, Ellen Brody. All right. Fuck you. She invites Hooper out to a dinner or not, not a dinner, a lunch. And they're like sexually talking to each other while they're at this diner.
00:10:17
Speaker
Like, what would you do to me? Like, Oh, in the car, I'm going to spread your lips and like shit like that. And then they fuck. That's pretty wild. They have an affair. And Steven Spielberg, you did the right thing, leaving that out of the movie. Yeah. No one wants to see that. The movie's better than the book. Well, some people want to see that, but not the mass audiences. And they kill Hooper in the book, which is fine. Cause he's my man, Hooper. I know he deserved it in the book and Quint survives, but in the movie they swapped it. Quint dies, Hooper.
00:10:48
Speaker
survives. Which one's Quint? The fishermen that they hire. Oh, right. And then you also give me a Blu-ray copy of the Crow. Here's my hot take on the Crow movies kind of mid. That's going to piss people off, but it's fine. kind of piss i gotta I'm gonna rewa um'm going to rewatch it for the new one to maybe like it more, but it was kind of mid.
00:11:09
Speaker
Um, and then one, I just thought of that we both did actually together. We both pre-order the Godzilla 4k, uh, Godzilla minus one 4k steel book, which has no release date and is like sold out everywhere. Except for target. If you want to get it, if you want to get it, go to target website.
00:11:32
Speaker
I mean, we did this a week ago. So who knows if Target actually even still has any in stock. It's true. um And then my last physical media adjacent pickup that I didn't tell you I bought it is this. um You're gonna be so mad. Is this vinyl copy of.
00:11:55
Speaker
right here right now. ah we um I'm not gonna lie to you and all the listeners, I am absolutely obsessed with this new live album they put out. So Ghost literally made a whole ass movie that was in theaters for a couple days towards the end of June and it was one of the best theater experiences slash live concert ish movies I've ever been to my entire life.
00:12:20
Speaker
It comes with this, um, photo book. And I mean the photos, like, let me, let me show you one of these. Where'd you get this by the way? Target. ah Damn it. I just happen to see it in target. Like look at this picture.
00:12:39
Speaker
Oh, the skeletons. Like, hold up, I'm hard. um And ah yeah, it was thirty three dollars for the listener. I do not own a record player. This is the only other vinyl record I own is Disturbed's newest album, Divisive, because I had a I got it when I went to the concert and just came with the ticket.
00:13:03
Speaker
Um, so yeah, that's quite the collection. I really don't want to start collecting vinyls because I know it's going to get wildly out of hand. What's the vinyl actually look like for the ghost? I didn't open it actually all the way. Oh, no, it's okay. You don't want fake fans. No, no, you can keep it sealed. That's fine. No, we'll do it right here on the pod live. Even though we don't have any video. Oh, there's there's multiple discs. Yo. Yeah, there's four discs.
00:13:29
Speaker
i It's great. It's fantastic. Are you going to get a ah record player now? No, because, dude, look at how out of hand our physical media collection is. If I start collecting vinyls, I'm going to be out of money. That's what my fiance told me. Yeah. I want him, but she said no. My dad offered me his record player. It's got Bluetooth and everything. He doesn't use it. Maybe take him up on it. Who knows? I wouldn't recommend it because I feel like we're going to go down a pretty bad rabbit hole and you are have more music taste than I do. So you'd be all over the place.
00:14:01
Speaker
Also, I'm already running out of room for my movies, let alone vinyls. Right. And those are big, at least are thin, but they're really big. You can fit a lot on a shelf, but you need a big ass shelf. You do need a big ass shelf. So everybody follow us on Instagram. Two guys, one screen pod. That's two guys, one screen pod.
00:14:23

Send us the email, send us hate mail, send us movie requests, send us wild that shit. All right. Let's get to the the movie review.
00:14:51
Speaker
Cuckoo, I want to ask you, I have a season pass to Alamo Draft House. um So most of my theater experiences are pretty chill. ah However, Cuckoo was one of the most full theaters I've seen. like I saw long legs there, and like my theater was like practically empty when I saw long legs. I saw long legs twice there, and it was like almost empty.
00:15:18
Speaker
And this was like one of the most full theaters I've seen for for a film. How was your experience? Which is weird because Long Legs had like way more height behind it. So much height. So on the app, it told me that there was so many people there. When I got there, it was me, this chick behind me, and like an elderly couple in their 70s. That was it.
00:15:47
Speaker
Did the elderly couple die from the jump scares? No. But they walked out of the theater and the husband was like, what'd you think of that one? And she's like, uh. Yeah, I mean, I might set up a bit. I might summarize our our entire thoughts for the whole entire film. I agree. Again, spoilers. We are in spoiler territory. We are going to give you a scene by scene recap of this film.
00:16:17
Speaker
All right, Cuckoo, which features Hunter Shafer as Gretchen, which it turns out she's a trans ah trans person. Look, all I'm saying is Hunter Shafer hit us up. We are a pro trans podcast and she is bad. She is bad as fuck. Then we have Dan Stevens as Mr. Koenig, Cunig, however you want to say that.
00:16:47
Speaker
ah Jessica Henwick is Beth. Martin, I can't say that last name, Sokus plays Louis. Mila Liu plays Alma. And Astrid Berges Frisbee plays Ed. yeah these I mean, these are some wild ass names.
00:17:14
Speaker
Pro... dude... alright, you can't laugh at this name. Okay, I'll try not to. Because I'm... Pro-Shat Madani plays... Dr. Bonomo. um And that's kinda it for the main the main cast. we're ah We're a Pro-Shat.
00:17:41
Speaker
We are first yet podcast because this movie did have me shat myself a couple of times with how shatty it is. Oh, yeah. Oh, man. OK, so here we go. The film opens with the shadow of a old. I don't know why I said old, but a German couple arguing and the camera pans up the stair up up the staircase to a a girl with long red hair.
00:18:10
Speaker
Shout out to her as a fellow redhead. Uh, and she's kind of losing her mind up there and then she runs away. She like sneaks. She's all going, uh, like season up.
00:18:23
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, that was accurate. Um, if you i don't like her eyes, you have seen the movie. Let us know if that was an accurate representation. I think it was 10 out of 10.
00:18:35
Speaker
Her eyes were a little fucky. So she leaves and the dude goes to the window. adow we don't he's not He has no name yet. um Goes to the window and he's like, yeah, she left.
00:18:46
Speaker
He's on the phone with somebody. Yeah, he's talking the phone to someone. All right, so we cut to the ah Bavarian Alps, where we meet ah Hunter Schaeffer's character Gretchen, who was in a ah truck with some truckers. Yeah, I didn't get why she was by herself. I mean, I think we find out as Moo progresses, she doesn't have a great relationship with her dad. No, but Her mom's not around. Oh, actually, here's the real answer. The parents were there to build. ah Koenig like a resort or something, maybe they're like they're bringing materials and she just row with them. I guess, but I don't know if I'd let my daughter just ride with these random dudes because they're kind of creepy. Yeah, ah fair enough. If I hated my dad, though, and I was rebellious, I'd probably just do it. Shadow dad, which I don't hate my dad. Shadow my dad and your dad. Shout out Lani.
00:19:41
Speaker
boy like Spoiler Uh, while they're in the truck, Gretchen mentioned that her sister Alma is a mute, so she doesn't speak. They arrive at the Alps resort where we meet, where me, Koenig, who was the manager, Dan Stevens, his character. Um, so they meet, they have a little weird, kind of awkward vibe conversation. Um,
00:20:09
Speaker
And Gretchen's like, all right, I'm out of here, fucking losers. And as she's walking, she gets a voicemail from a woman, from somebody, who she's in a band with. And the the lady's like, oh, you know, we have we have these tracks, but we need your voice. And then she just hangs up. She's like, fuck that shit. She goes in the bathroom. And this scene to me, now, like, when you see the whole entire movie, it makes no sense. She's in the bathroom.
00:20:37
Speaker
And then they're just like banging on the stall, which was scary or like, you know, intense when I watched it. But going forward for the rest of the movie, what is the point of this scene? None. that There's no point. I mean, like so there's banging on this on the stall and then nothing happens with it. You hear her pissing, by the way.
00:20:57
Speaker
Nice stream has a nice stream. It it kind of gave me vibes of ah Halloween 2018. That's all I think about. Yeah, it's a good pull when ah any kind of bathroom scene like that. Yeah, the the opening kill and Michael goes into the bathroom just absolutely annihilates that. That movie is so good, dude. We got to review it. I'm game and I should have bought this double clothes on sale and grow old. Shout out. grove ninety We know you're listening.
00:21:25
Speaker
you oh Yeah, the the CEOs of Grove as ambiguous probably knows free movies All right. So the whole weird bathroom stall thing happens and then she walks outside and we meet, uh, the neighbor, Dr. Bonobo pro-shat, um, who, so, so Gretchen is holding a whole ass stereo or whatever you want to call it and an amp and, and, uh, Bonobo walks over and like shake her hand and she's like, I'm fucking carrying an amp. My hands are kind of full and she was like, Oh, mine are too.
00:22:00
Speaker
Yeah, her hands are in the metaphorical sense. um So she's kind of weirded out by that. Also, Dr. Bonobo already knows her name, Gretchen's name, and Gretchen's like, how'd you know that? And then ah Conan is like, oh, I told her. So then we get.
00:22:18
Speaker
Gretchen in the room she's staying at and she this happens a couple times in the film She starts leaving voicemails for her mom and they progressively get more and more Sad and distraught about like I don't want to be here. I'd rather be with you not with dad Yeah, because they literally uprooted their lives from the states to Germany for some bullshit Yeah for her dad to like build this resort and her dad the douche Big douche. Big, badass douche. um And then another scene that I wrote down, or that I wrote down that I don't think anything ever happened with it, is she leaves some money and a knife under the bed. And then, I mean, I guess she takes this money when she robs the ah reception later. But I was like, I don't know why they showed this, because they never go back to it.
00:23:10
Speaker
At that point, Koenig's being a weirdo. He just like sneaks into her room and he's like, Oh, I want to give you a job. He just appears like magically. So he goes, yeah, do you want to work at the hotel reception? Then we cut to Gresham's trial run, I guess her dad's like, Oh, no, no, you don't, you don't want to do that. And she's like, I'll do it. That's a good point. It's like, fuck you, dad. All that. All that. Um, we cut to the,
00:23:38
Speaker
Her like first trial run of ah working at the store and the other her like co-worker is like training her what to say Beatrice Beatrice is training her what to say and whatever. And they have a conversation and then all of a sudden this lady walks over and she's just hacking along. Yeah. Yeah. It's vomiting, vomiting everywhere. And they're like, what's wrong with you?
00:24:06
Speaker
and just just walks away. Doesn't even answer him. Stop fucking vomiting on my floor. Yeah. Very weird. ah So that was that was odd. or and And then you're like, okay, what's going on? We cut to ah Gretchen practicing bass in her her bedroom jamming the fuck jamming the fuck out headphones on she's really going along I got i thought because the voicemail like oh we need your voice I thought she was the singer but I guess she's the bass player she could be both what band has the lead singer also be the bassist I mean I'm with how many bands exist I'm sure one but not many is there a band that only uses bass that band probably has made zero dollars
00:24:52
Speaker
and the only thing i could think of because this is like german rock was not romstein which i should have uh i thought of that song from guitar hero 3 on the bonus

Plot Twists and Character Revelations

00:25:03
Speaker
like the extra songs it's called to here come
00:25:09
Speaker
And the whole entire song you just strum the fuck out of one note it's like dan a a ain a And it's yeah ah guitar here with three by the way while we're here the best guitar hero by far hands down if you think it's anything else Don't listen to this podcast. Yeah. and Well, no listen to it, but ah no no let't do it but If you don't like if you think I was the best one send us a ah Proper essay with sources to our email to guys one screen pot at gmail.com I want a full thousand word essay. Right. Yeah. Uh, with good points. Don't make some bullshit points. Yeah. Be like, Oh, it has this song. Fuck you. Her sister walks in Alma, the mute, and, uh, we hear like the weird noise. What are you going to call this? A screech? Sounds like something's dying. I don't know. Like I'm not going to do an impression because it's that would kill people's ears. Yeah.
00:26:07
Speaker
And uh, so the screech starts happening and she reacts to it like very weird. And then the Gretchen doesn't notice that what's going on. She starts like seizing kinda. Right. And like Gretchen doesn't know what's happening. Cause she's like jamming out headphones on. Jamming out to Romstein. Du hast.
00:26:37
Speaker
Eventually she notices her and then this thing happens when this, I called it in my notes, a weird vibey thing.
00:26:46
Speaker
When the, when the weird vibey thing happens, uh, it's like a loop of time. So like, it shows you a couple times of times with her, like recognizing, like seeing her and then like going over to touch her. And then it just like looped back and she's laying on her bed again, but she like, I don't like this.
00:27:05
Speaker
i really I really don't like this part. like It's fine like if you're in like a time loop, right? Sure. Like Dormammu? I've come to the bargain. I've come to bargain. Bargain for that. For your Benedict Cumber Snatch.
00:27:32
Speaker
oh fuck by Eventually she like Around like the third time of the time loop. She like recognizes what's going on She's like, right. I just went through this So you do not like that it took her so many times to realize she's going through the same thing No, just the whole vibe just the whole vibe. Okay, that's fair Because what's the point? I don't know. I mean when you're saying like in the moment, you're like, alright, I don't get what's going on here. I So she keeps trying to grab her sister's shoulder, like console her sister, and there's that weird throat, cricket, whatever. Ah, ah, ah, ah. And the whole time, you're just like, what that throat do? Yeah, it's literally like a close-up on someone's throat, and it's just going, ugh. Right. So this happens a couple of times. You watch Gretchen try to touch Alma a few times, and then eventually, Alma snaps out of it and just uppercuts.
00:28:31
Speaker
correction in the face or scratches or whatever it was. She scratches her. Yeah. Uh, so the parents walk in and like, well, her dad and like the stepmom or whatever, uh, Beth, she would fuck her. She's dumb. Yeah, but she's dumb. So they walk in and there's this weird conversation about. Alma was like the vanishing twin syndrome. Did you pick up on this?
00:28:56
Speaker
So apparently like there's like this disease or something where you can have two twins and then one twin gets hungry or something. I don't know. And like absorbs the other twin. Yeah, it must be a rough life in the embryo. Hey man, survival of the fittest. So yeah, that's a good point. While they're at work, Gretchen tells Beatrice about her sister eating her other sister. And then she's like, Oh yeah. So basically she's a bitch.
00:29:26
Speaker
Like, she's hating on this, like, seven seven-year-old chick. Like... Right. But you come to learn, like, she just doesn't like her because her mom's gone, and this is the new woman in the family, like, the nuclear family, and there's this new sister she has to adopt. Basically, yeah, her... All the attention goes... Which I do think is, like, an undertone of the movie. Is, like, a found, like, those two become, like, tight by the end of the film. Yeah.

Climax and Horror Comparisons

00:29:56
Speaker
All right, so we're in we're in the reception store. Koenig doesn't want Beatrice riding her bike home at night, so that's why ah she he doesn't want her to close. But Beatrice says, hey, I'm gonna um gonna leave early and you can take over. But don't tell Koenig. Okay, so while she's in the store though, this is when we meet Ed.
00:30:24
Speaker
And Ed is a hot-ass lady, not a dude. And it's very apparent from the moment like they walk over that Ed is trying to fuck. Big fuck. Touching hands. you know She's all over it. Big fuck. Right. And then, so they're talking. They're like flirting with each other. She's from Paris. And another weird guest walks in and starts chugging up. It said pop on the can. She starts chugging this drink.
00:30:56
Speaker
some soda and then just leaves. Uh, and the phone starts ringing. And then from this point to like the next scene, like the phone is just ringing and she go, she goes to answer the phone and it's Kone and he's like, how come the lights are still on? What are you still doing there? Whatever. And he thinks it's Beatrice, but it's Gretchen. And he's like, Oh, Gretchen.
00:31:22
Speaker
No, he's like, I'll come pick you up. Right. She's like, I'll take the bike. Now this whole scene with the bike is literally in the trailer. Big spoiler. Like why'd they put this? was the best scene I mean why yeah why I think there's a problem across most movies that nowadays is the trailers just give way too much away you get three minute we don't need a three-minute trailer give us a little tease like yeah tease me edge me but no yeah you're making me don't edge me to completion just edge me right I'm just straight-up busting let me finish in the movie right let me bust in the movie let me bust in a movie theater Pee Wee Herman style how you doing Pee Wee Herman shout out to him we know you're listening RIP he's dead
00:32:05
Speaker
All right, so Gretchen's like, fuck this dude, I'm not getting in the car with him, I'll just take my bike. So she gets in the bike, and if you've seen the trailer, you obviously know what we're talking about, but they cut to Koenig playing the flute. You know what it reminds me of? Tell me. In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
00:32:31
Speaker
He's like he's like hold on And the loopa comes over that's what it what it is, but yeah, that's fire. That's accurate movie kind sucks do do right, so The biking scene happens where she's getting chased by a lady who's wearing like, she the the glasses she's wearing remind me of like the Quicksilver glasses from X-Men, not from Marvel. yeah Like the slow motion when he's running around the circle, like it looked like that. I'm like, oh, is that Quicksilver chasing her? She's also dressed like she's from like the 50s or something. Yeah, she got some weird some weird stuff going on. Weird drip going on. Weird, yeah, I wouldn't call it drip. So then she ends up at like the medical station, whatever, hospital.
00:33:19
Speaker
ah Sure. I mean, they're in the middle of the woods. I don't know what it is. It's some kind of sure hospital. but We find out it's like a facility. and Yeah, that has a right. So she like runs. She's like, help me, help me. And like, she's like pressing this button like this lady's chasing me. And the lady's like, yes, yes, I'm coming. German. So she like, one door opens that she just walked, she think it's like, you know, the glass door syndrome, she ah bangs her head into this Glass war and starts bleeding all over the place so when this happened I put my head down to like write down what was going on And you know how like loud the thought is yeah all of a sudden just looked up like what the what did I miss? What did she run into? It's like in Joker right yeah, but more more graphic in this film Yeah, Joker's way better um yeah it is Joker such a fucking good movie. but He sucks guys. We'll get there
00:34:14
Speaker
All right, so then they they have the, she cracks her head and they start giving her stitches. The stitches was a nice little body horror, not a body horror, but like a nice little graphic. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. I winced a little. all Yeah, I mean, people say this movie is gory. I don't know how gory it really is, but it has its moments. It's no saw, it's no terrifier. Right. shadow art We are a big Art the Clown podcast. Let's just get that out there now. If you don't like Art the Clown, still listen.
00:34:40
Speaker
Art the Clown stands over here, alright? We are stands. But yeah, it's like, not even stitches, it's staples. Like a staple gun. du ah I've had that done, by the way. Dude, these Europeans don't give a fuck. What happened to you? That you had that done. I was like four years old, and my dad was working night shift, and my mom wanted to give me a bath.
00:35:00
Speaker
And the house we lived in had like really sharp locks, like when you locked the door. The house that I went to? No. So I was running, right? And like the really sharp, like lock on the door sliced my head open and I was just bleeding all over the floor. And you survived? I think so. That's survival of the fittest, baby. But I had to go to the hospital and they like at like midnight and they gave me stitches, not stitches, staples. They didn't numb me either. Shout out staples. Sponsor us.
00:35:33
Speaker
where were we this this podcast is going off the rails off the fucking rails she's getting her forehead stapled and she's trying to get her better dick cummer snap stapled
00:36:04
Speaker
So she's trying to the cops what happened and they're like you're full of shit. There's no fucking lady here Yeah, they they changed her story for her which spoiler alert the cops are in on it Oh, yeah, but they're like, oh, that's not how that happened. Right? So but she goes she just goes along with it They're like, oh you got pranked. Well, she's getting staples in her fucking head. She doesn't have the energy to fight them I guess I think the next day or whatever, they're in the house and the parents come in and they're like, oh, your your sister Alma had a really bad seizure. She has epilepsy, we think. So she's in the hospital. We hear another voicemail that Gretchen to her mom and she's like, I don't want to leave this place. Wow. Fuck. The fucking the voicemail is that she wants to leave that she wants to fucking stay. That's crazy.
00:36:52
Speaker
Um, she wants to leave. I told you, it's not their fucking rails. We get a random guy that appears who is a detective or he's posing as a detective. There was an exposition to but the end that I might've missed this, but he either is or isn't a detective. And he's like, I know you saw a woman. And she's like, don't fucking talk to me. Yeah. Cause he looks like, yeah, disheveled. Right. She's like, I don't want to fucking talk to you. Um,
00:37:23
Speaker
So then we're outside the resort and she's talking to Ed. Because Ed's like, I'm leaving. And her and Ed have a full blown make out sesh like against a tree in the front. Yeah. I'm guessing with tongue. She's like, oh, you're going to come with me?
00:37:46
Speaker
um So she's like let's just get out of here. So Gretchen through a voice when we hear she's like I'm gonna rob this place taking all our money and They're in the car and this scene. I thought was pretty good. It was yeah, they're ah they're smoking some weed. Yeah, and Like I have in my notes that weird vibey thing happens And then if this swerve off the road cuz the ladies in the middle of the road and Yeah, they keep talking about like this pink building that's on the resort, like the honeymoon suite. The lovers nest. Yes. Well, lovers. Yeah. She's like, you know, it's the lovers nest. I'm like, oh, they're going to fuck. And then they just they crash. Big like not just crash, like off the road. rash Fucking tumbled flip. Yeah. Oh, this really bothered me. So I don't like.
00:38:37
Speaker
anything to do with like eyes, eye things really bother me. okay So when they're crashed, they're the car's on its roof, they're upside down, and surprise, surprise, Gretchen starts bleeding again.
00:38:51
Speaker
and it's dripping down her face like into her eye the blood is dripping in her eye yeah and I don't know how they I think it's practical like I don't think there's any CGI like whatever is dripping into her her eye is just literally dripping into her eye because her her ah entire white of her eye goes red yeah I think that fake CGI blood you can see pretty easy like fucking Renfield or like Deadpool Wolverine like it's kind of obvious when it's that fake fake shit and like you could tell like she was like blinking like us kind of fucking stings like and sucks food covering water in your eye and then like she I guess she's trapped she's stuck there right and the lady comes reaching ed is out cold
00:39:38
Speaker
Lady comes, oh, that was actually good. That was pretty actually hot. She sticks her arm in the car. And like as she's about to reach Gretchen, we hear a gunshot. And then it's just a flash to the hospital where Gretchen's like laying in a hospital bed. Yeah.
00:39:58
Speaker
And Koenig's there. Koenig walks in. By the way, the food at this goddamn hospital. What are we? Is this a five star, not five star, a three star Michelin restaurant? What is going on? He's like, you see this food? ah Bitch, you guys got free health care and that nice ass food. What are we doing in America?
00:40:18
Speaker
Nothing good. No, you go to a hospital in America. You're getting a like a tuna sandwich That's like sitting there for days. You're getting slop little carton of milk like middle school
00:40:33
Speaker
So this is ah Koenig being a weirdo and then it kind of ends up in a way threatening or he's like, Oh, we wouldn't want you to get hurt again. Like I kind of knew that he was sus from the beginning, but like this is the one, this is the moment where you're like, Oh, you are the bad guy. You're the villain.
00:40:53
Speaker
that That was one of my criticisms with the film. I think it is very straightforward. And what what did you hear about this movie before you saw it? Because like ah when when this when they were airing trailers for this and for Long Legs, I would get them confused often. Yes. I'd be like, oh, is this Long Legs or is this Cuckoo? And then it's like the talk, at least in my circles, started to turn into like, oh, it's a crazy body horror movie.

Final Thoughts and Ratings

00:41:21
Speaker
And it just, it was like all sorts of different narratives for this film. It's more so like a thriller. People are saying it's psychological, but I don't really buy that. There's aspects, but right, but I don't think it's like a. Good movie.
00:41:45
Speaker
I'm leaning, I'm leaning positive. I'm not, I'm not at a negative yet. I'm, I'm still, I'm still positive on it. There's actually one scene that we're going to get to pretty soon that takes me out of it completely. So Koenig's in there. He's like threatening or like, Oh, you know, and then dad comes in and as soon as dad comes in Koenig's like, Oh, I'll leave you two alone. Right. And then.
00:42:11
Speaker
The dad is like, I gotta go take care of Alma, cause she's fucked up. Like, hello dad, I was just in a car crash, I'm fucking like dying over here. Yeah, but like, he hates her. I don't know if I hates her, but I don't fucking really give a shit about you. He's like, you did this to yourself, running off, trying to escape, getting in a car accident. He's like, you can fucking take care of yourself. And she's like, it's fucking crazy here, dude. He's like, if you wanna run away from home, use your fucking bike.
00:42:40
Speaker
Well, like, I don't know. It felt like I don't think he hates her. It's more so, you know, she's a teenager. She's got completely like uprooted country, like rebellious teen. Which, by the way, thank you for bringing it up. No way I'm buying she's 16, 17 in this film. Not a shot. Not even close. Come on. But a fair point. And then I think while she's still in there, the detective tries again with her about like I need to talk to me about what's going on. And then he tells her about his experience, the lady that he's been like trying to arrest her for years. She's wanted for murder. Yeah. And this man with his wife were staying in some cabin and she choked and died on her vomit or something like that. And he's like, let's go do a. A stakeout.
00:43:34
Speaker
She's like, I saw her, I believe you. Right. And you've been trying to like capture or arrest this woman, whatever. Is she real? Is she not? That's, you're still, at this point you're still kind of wondering is this lady real or not? It still feels like a supernatural vibe or. So they go stake out the lover's nest and the, the lover's nest is Beatrice and her man's. One of the police officers who's in on it.
00:44:04
Speaker
It's like being all seductive, like putting rose petals down. Not very, by the way, he just opened the duffel bag and just like shakes it out. Yeah. He's just like here, bitch. Right. Show me your, show me your tots. Uh, and then the weird vibey thing happens again oh and they keep living in the same moment. He's trying to put away the food that she laid out. He's like, Oh, let's go out. So he's in that stuck in that loop. Cause he knows.
00:44:35
Speaker
This guy knows he knows what's going on. He's like, oh, fuck, it's happening. Right. So the lady appears in the oh, I fucking forgot to mention that they did this in a fucking trailer. While they're yeah, while they're at the stakeout, Gretchen falls asleep in the cop car and the cop detective takes her butterfly knife right out of her pocket. Right. Which is to be noted. So the old lady shows up, not old, tim and old, she's the lady.
00:45:03
Speaker
shows up and she's like, it looks like she sticks her hand in her snatch. Yeah. And like pulls out goo. Yeah. It's like gooey, gooey snatch liquid. It's like, yeah. So she pulled up this gooey snatch liquid and like offers it to her. And then I believe Gretchen appears like in the doorway behind her.
00:45:33
Speaker
while she's like sticking her hand out so detective guy is like oh shit there she is so he like leaves the building that they're staked in and like has a gun cocks it and use it makes like a silencer with a pillow so he chases her into the woods right and then she's gone gone go out there oh but I do want to mention when the lady attacks, uh, Beatrice, there is a crazy fucking jump scare that had me shook. Cause she's like, you can see her peeking out from the wall. She's like floating.

Physical Media and Recommendations

00:46:11
Speaker
And then she just appears like in front of you, like jaw unhinged. That got me. That got me fucking good. I wrote my notes, crazy jump scare. Cause I was shook, but they showed that in the trailer.
00:46:26
Speaker
And tonight one of the trailers, one of the newer trailers.
00:46:31
Speaker
So like, I knew it was happening. What the fuck are you doing? I had a booger. You're dripping snatch liquid. Out of my fucking nostrils. Yeah, I'm dripping snatch liquid. ah I got a leaky snatch.
00:46:56
Speaker
ah Fuck all right um So they showed this in the trailer which I didn't see it oh So they go back to Beatrice and she's got like goo in her throat yeah, she starts like kind of like vomiting and Detective guys like oh we got to put her on her side Yeah, but she died in this or she should come back. I think she's dead, right? I wait. Yeah Yeah, I don't think you see her for the rest of the movie. I think she done dead dead by She got she got snatched like And then it cuts again to Gretchen waking up She's sleeping so much in this movie so much and which is like maybe like it's a psychological thriller of like all this is
00:47:50
Speaker
ah Dream, but I really I think that cliche like oh, it's all a dream is so fucking overplayed I'll be honest. I thought that's what it was For the majority of this movie. I thought maybe she had like some Psychological disorder like schizophrenia or something sure that's possible you're just imagining everything but as we get on into the movie you realize nope this shit's real Fuck I'm leaky um
00:48:19
Speaker
So this, this scene was interesting. Um, she walks up to Koenig, Koenig, whatever his name is. <unk> And she, yeah, whatever you prefer. And she's like, bro, there's a lot of weird shit going on here. Her parents like, Hey, relax. Yeah. It's like, no, I won't fucking relax. There's some weird ass shit going on here. Like you can't talk to her like that he's in her house.
00:48:43
Speaker
And she's like, shut the fuck up like beth eat my mom. She goes to give Alma like the little whistle. Yeah. And she's like, this is some weird fucking shit, guys. Right. And then they're like, hey, a package arrived for you from your mom. This is fucked. I felt so bad for her. So she's like at this point has a fucking mental breakdown because come to find out her dad sold their house.
00:49:12
Speaker
Oh, he drops that right before the right before you give her the package. She's like, yeah, I sold the house. Yeah, I sold the house, and here's all your mom's stuff. Yeah, and there's the we hear her listening to voicemails that she left on her own voicemail tape, like a cassette player. Right. So she's like, I want out. And Koenig's like, I'll drive you to the train.
00:49:39
Speaker
And this part was kind of funny. She leaves a note and she's like, don't come looking for me. I don't want to don't don't bother. Fuck you, dad. Fuck you stepmom. And then I think I maybe miss something here. ah She. They're in the car and somehow it's just it's not the train station, but they all get out. She gets out with him like into this building.

Podcast Conclusion

00:50:04
Speaker
Yeah.
00:50:07
Speaker
I'm pretty sure it's like the the facility that they're at. Right. Like the hospital facility thing. From before. Right. Which, if I'm Gretchen, this ain't the hospital. This is not the train station. Where are the trains? Right. This scene was pretty good. They open they opened the door to like, it's it was a pool, but there's just a bed in there now. Right. And he sprays her with, with he said it's pheromones.
00:50:34
Speaker
But it like disoriented and he locks her in the, that room. So, uh, it cuts to him. Like there's cameras in this room. Like he can see everything that's happening and he's pretty much like, Oh, uh, it breaks down everything that's happened.
00:51:00
Speaker
Yeah, the big exposition dump, which I was not a fan of. They're like the cuckoo bird. Yeah, it goes into like this cuckoo bird thing where. Oh, actually, you know, what we forgot to mention when they walk into the facility, they have the detective at like gunpoint.
00:51:16
Speaker
Oh, yeah. So he's like on his knees and the cop, one of the other cops is like, has the gun to his head execution style. And he's like, Oh, he was a ah detective. Uh, but he decided to, yeah, he got disgraced against the force. Like basically he was a cop, but he found out what they were doing here.
00:51:39
Speaker
and He Konig has like connections or something and he like cut him from the force, but now this guy's kind of going rogue right so they they also reveal in that scene that the story that this detective told Gretchen earlier about this man his wife staying at the the love nest was his wife He lost his wife. He was the man in that nest, so to speak. Right. ah And when they're in the pool thing, Kony gives her like this whole spiel about cuckoo birds.
00:52:16
Speaker
which you get the name from. Which is like, so from what I got is like cuckoo birds will have their eggs and other birds nests. Right. And like raise them as their own. So what I, what I, this is the reveal. This is where I was out on the rest. I didn't really give a fuck by the rest of the movie. I am so goddamn sick and tired of these impregnation movies. Oh, we impregnated you immaculate this year. Uh,
00:52:45
Speaker
goddamn first omen, which you didn't see, but that movie's trash. Comment for me in the comments. that's ah yeah As soon as they said, like, when you find out, like, I guess we'll just, you know, big reveal, they're pretty much impregnating women with like this ancient creatures seed.
00:53:08
Speaker
We don't know what it is. No, you never find out what this creature is. Unless I missed it, but I don't think we tell you do not find out what this thing is. So it's they and they're just trying to reproduce. Yeah, but basically, Koenig says like each generation gets stronger and stronger. So ah when when they're in the pool room,
00:53:30
Speaker
ah Koenig presses this button, the glass doors of this room slide open, and this lady, you know, from the beginning, from the beginning, starts coming in, and starts, you know, snatch juicing, Gretchen. Also, I think, isn't there a part where she goes to, like, squeal or whatever, and he's like, ah, ah, ah? Like, don't you fucking do it to me? Like, who has some kind of control over them?
00:54:01
Speaker
Yeah, so... Right, he comes... Kony comes in now. Yeah. And like, basically the flute that he's been playing this whole movie, like, summons them. ah Okay. Kind of like the Oompa Loompas, like... And the Oompa Loompas come. What if the ancient sea was an Oompa Loompa sea? What if it's all in the Willy Wonka universe?
00:54:26
Speaker
But the Oompa Loompas aren't evil It's like a twisted. I don't know. Oh and just riff with me, dude. Okay. I'm sorry So we got to give it to the director of ah Winnie the Pooh blood and honey, you know who make a universe. Oh, please do So yeah, he's like uh-uh Because he she's like, okay, so this creature thing looks like Megan The doll do you think? a hundred percent the eyes It almost looked like she's wearing a mask because our eyes are kind of like popping out. At this point, you're like, Oh, Gretchen's fucked. She's cooked. And then the cop, they, they, they cut to the detective being held at gunpoint and they like make a ah point to focus on the guy's hand shaking. So I guess the detective, like Jason borns that shit. Right. And he kills the.
00:55:21
Speaker
He kills the, uh, the cop. You hear two gunshots in the background. You're like, Oh, they fucking killed the detective. And the reveal is, Oh, he killed the cop. Also, this is all the big reveal of like the the cops are in on it. You don't know until this scene, like the cops are, are behind all this too. So he shoots. Uh, as soon as he, as soon as the detective appears, Koenig starts to run, he shoots them. And this pissed me off. You don't see where he shoots them, but later Koenig has like a patch on his chest.
00:55:50
Speaker
If you get shot in the chest, you're down and out. So he shoots the creature thing pow pow twice. And then ah Gretchen comes out of her trance. And then the reveal of, well, this is in the exposition dump, but they're like, Oh, uh, Alma is one of these things and Beth was just carrying it for us. So the detective is like, I want to kill this bitch. We have to end this species and Gretchen.
00:56:21
Speaker
all of a sudden it's like, well, that's still my sister. Not even your real sister, but it's, well, it's like your half-sister. Yeah, step, whatever. What are you doing in step bro? Okay. So they explained to you that Beth was a surrogate mother for Alma and he was just, she was just carrying this cuckoo for them.
00:56:44
Speaker
And then it cuts to Koenig who you're like, oh, he's definitely dead, but he's not. He gets up and he goes into this like observatory room where Dr. Bonobo Prochat is standing with somebody else. And he just like, there's just conveniently an AK or some kind of rifle ah leaning against the wall. He just annihilates them. He's like, yeah, jack yeah you're done.
00:57:11
Speaker
It's like, fuck you. Cause this whole time, like they're doing tests on Alma because it's like the, it's supposed to be the first interaction between child and mother.
00:57:27
Speaker
Uh, but that gets cut short because Gretchen and detective guy. Well, they get in the argument hunt them da because he's like, I want to kill this bitch. And Gretchen's like, no. And then they get in a fight. That's my sister. And she stabs him with the in his pocket butterfly knife. Right. She takes a butterfly knife, like slices his forehead and then stabs him in the side. So she yes, they interrupt this whole observatory thing of like mother with with a daughter.
00:58:06
Speaker
And Alma gets to our Gretchen gets to Alma and she's like, all right, we got to get the fuck out of here. And then you see the lady like down the hallway. And Gretchen realizes, oh, I can like hold a knife to Alma not hold it to her. It's like above her head.
00:58:21
Speaker
And she won't like come to me because I'll kill Alma if she comes near me. Right. And that's her daughter. Right. And then Alma realizes, bro, you trying to fucking kill me right now? So she pushes Gretchen and she runs off. So then it's ah just a chase. So Gretchen is chasing Alma and the lady is chasing Gretchen. So we end up in this.
00:58:43
Speaker
room that has it's like a library like a library of sorts it has files whatever the fuck it has in there and i thought this scene actually really built some good tension could you like oh what the fuck's gonna happen now yeah this was hands down the best scene in my opinion yeah it was good i enjoyed it and i'm happy they didn't ruin it with a jump scare yeah so gretchen knows like i gotta cover my ears Right. So she's like kind of like she has she has like her one ear in the little crease of her elbow and the other and then wrapped around her head and her hand is on the other ear, if that makes any sense at all. Yeah, she's trying to cover ears with one of her ears. So the the lady comes in and Gretchen sees like an iPod.
00:59:40
Speaker
Right. Or she had it or she just found it. ah She found it. OK, convenient. She sees it and she runs to it. ah Puts it in her ears and plays. Which I guess offsets the like the screeching because you can't hear it. I don't buy that, but sure. So then then that she's there and she's like playing a cat and mouse game with the lady and then the dude, the detective who thought was dead, just pulls up.
01:00:09
Speaker
um And this is I thought this scene was kind of cool the two of them ah Gretchen and the lady like kind of meet Eye contact that cuz I'd like they're like slowly standing up. Yeah, they see each other through the bookshelves shelves. Yeah and The detector like fuck this and just pushes the bookshelves. No regards for Gretchen's life at all at all.
01:00:33
Speaker
and then Alma runs off and I guess the detective is like in pursuit of her and you see the uh you see the lady get up like rise from the bookshelves and she's like trying to she's coming after Gretchen and Gretchen I guess I don't know if she's pinned because she gets out they make it seem like she's pinned to begin with but then she just gets out Right. So the lady kind of like goes over to Gretchen. She's on top of her. I was like on top of her. Yeah. And then you're it's like a zoom in on the lady's face, which was disturbing. Very disturbing. ah And then you just hear like, like, you know, nasty blood stuff. And Gretchen stabs the butterfly knife, like up through this lady's like throat area. Yeah. It was a good kill.
01:01:28
Speaker
Yeah. It starts like squirting blood. This is the bloodiest part of the movie. Like the ladies just like squirting blood all over the place. And even still it wasn't terrible. No, I mean, you can see it in your everyday like action movie. Right. Uh, so, so Gretchen's like, all right, I'm out. And she runs out of the room and then the lady's still following her, but then falls over and dies.
01:01:55
Speaker
Yes, she did. And then you're like, OK, well, I guess she's not supernatural. I guess she's just a lady. She can just die. Yeah. Like anybody else. um So then. Koenig and the detective are having a standoff in some room. They're like shooting at each other and like almost like at it's like kind of in the middle of them and they're Koenig's like, this is my science experiment. Don't you fucking touch her and detectives like ah they only die.
01:02:28

Right. So then Gretchen pulls up while they're shooting and she's like trying to apologize to Elmo. Why is Elmo so butthurt over this? I mean, get over yourself. She's like, I'm sorry, I would never actually hurt you, but I need your help now. Right. And ah then they start talking about her mom. Should I go to mom call? And she's like, yeah, she called, but I don't.
01:02:53
Speaker
I don't know what this is talking about. Also, I wanted to mention, did you think when the ladies on top of Gretchen, like her reaction to it was, do you think the lady looked like her mom? I'll be honest. I thought it I think it is her mom. Okay, I'm also in that ship. Right. I think the lady that's been chasing her is her mom.
01:03:16
Speaker
um
01:03:19
Speaker
ah Basically, I feel like these, whatever creatures these are, are pretty much just using the human body as like a shell. Yeah, I feel that. So somehow Gretchen's mom.
01:03:36
Speaker
Is the creature, maybe? Yeah, it was a little confusing. But Koenig starts talking about some bullshit and Gretchen's like, I killed the lady, she's dead.
01:03:48
Speaker
Uh, and he's still talking and then Gretchen throws the wig cause she's like scalps her. Yeah. yeah Throws the wig out into the room. And Kony's like, Oh, you killed her. And then what I have in my not my notes is Alma and Gretchen do a meat shield. Literally. So there Gretchen takes Alma and puts her on like this rolling cart. And the detective is on one side of the room with a pistol.
01:04:18
Speaker
Koenig's on the other side of the room with this semi-auto rifle and Gretchen's like pushing Alma on this thing, but neither of them can shoot because ah Detective Guy doesn't want to kill Gretchen and Koenig doesn't want to shoot Alma. So they're just kind of meat shield in it.
01:04:41
Speaker
And they get to the end of the hallway and almost like covers Gretchen's ears and does the screech. Right. Which was kind of sick. It's like, here takes me on medicine. ah Yeah, but at the same time, I didn't like that because when if she can already do the screech, wouldn't she be like full creature at this point?
01:05:04
Speaker
Um, I think, I think they developed them. Like she's like a kid. Also, Koenig wasn't playing the flute. I don't know. I don't know. So maybe like she wasn't under his like spell or whatever.
01:05:23
Speaker
um And then that like distorts them they escape and then Konig and ah The detective just shoot each other at the same time right double murder Off-screen off-screen and then basically that's the end of the movie. She runs off with Ed Yeah So I think the thematic piece of this film to me is like found family found motherhood because now Gretchen is going to be a mother to Alma, which we don't know what happens to her dad or Beth.
01:06:03
Speaker
They just disappear. They're just, she yells them in that one scene and then that's just it. It's the last time you see them in the entire movie. Yeah. And then the movie just kind of wraps. So maybe it's like a found, it's like a found motherhood or like the, I dunno, the, uh, the love of family or something.
01:06:19
Speaker
yeah it's um it tries but i think it's just throwing a lot at the wall oh yeah it's kind of all over the place if this if this episode sounds all over the place that's because this movie is all over the place it is uh but i think i mean people were really going on not about gretchen about hunter shafer's performance i think it was fine I'm not over the moon. Well, like, you know, it doesn't there's a lot of other acting performances in a horror thriller film that I think are are better. I mean, she's good. She's not bad at it. I think Kony was the best. Yeah, he was good. Dan Stevens was a good little creepy fucker. A little creepy fuck. Yeah. So that's the end of the movie. I am the average letterbox rating right now is a three point two. I am going to rate it a three star.
01:07:10
Speaker
I'm giving it a two. Fair. I was back and forth. And I was like, I kind of like it. I kind of like the themes, they the themes, I think kind of work. And this movie did make me feel at times scared, disturbed and uncomfortable. So I'll give it that. And I think maybe on a rewatch, you pick up some more stuff.
01:07:34
Speaker
That's where I'm at with it. I mean, I think a three star is fair. I don't know if this is better than like this is not better than long legs. No, no, it's not not a shot. I mean, it's. To me, it's like in the first omen range, people really like that movie, but I think the first omen is pretty fucking boring.
01:07:52
Speaker
Um, so it's, it's somewhere around there for me. I don't know where it's going to end up, but it's a, it's a three star. I'm guessing the both of us don't really care about a physical media release. Oh man. I don't know. If they make some six steel book, I'd probably be in maybe not a 4k nice little cuckoo bird on the steel. No, I wouldn't want that. No, I don't know what i want I'd want. I'd want something, but not that.
01:08:19
Speaker
Because a cuckoo bird, besides what it functions as in nature, doesn't really tie into this film at all. Correct. Do cuckoo birds goo? i the Cuckoo birds definitely don't cuckoo. Goo at their snatch. No. But also the idea of like that they write like they plant their eggs and have other birds raise their birds for them like they're embedding this whatever into kids and having other mothers raise it like have the pregnancy I get the general idea but they kind of threw everything at the wall and saw what stuck and what didn't yeah so you're out of two I'm out of three I
01:09:01
Speaker
When I saw it, I texted you, I was in the middle. I'm leaning positive, so I'll give it a three. It might be a two and a half, but I think it's a three for me. Two for you. I wouldn't recommend seeing it in the theaters. I would wait to see if it comes out on streaming. I am the opposite. Support movie theaters. Go see it in theaters.
01:09:20
Speaker
It's not that it's not that bad that you like. It's not like fucking Madam Web bad. Is it what you haven't seen? No, was it worth your twenty dollars? I didn't I have a season pass. It was zero dollars for me. Oh, OK. I wait. It was zero dollars for me. I'm glad. You know what? I'm glad that it was zero dollars. I think this movie, if you go with a group of friends, it was probably a fun time. ah And yeah, go support movie theaters. Don't wait for it to go on streaming and go see it.
01:09:51
Speaker
There's not many movies on this podcast. I'm going to say don't go see besides possibly our next ah heart tap hot take hot take. Um, yeah, I think that is the end of this podcast. 01:10:22
Speaker
And then our letterboxes will be tagged. All this will be tagged, as always, in the description of the episode. um And next week, probably my most anticipated movie of the year, besides Nosferatu. Alien Romulus. Alien Romulus looks so promising, dude. In Fidea, Alvarez, we trust.
01:10:46
Speaker
Like every time the trailer plays it's so good But I do think it falls in the same problem as most movies. The newest trailer is too long shows too much Yeah shows too much throat fucking But I'm here for the throat fucking don't do I want to see it? But like don't like have that i'm I'm sure there's a lot more up his sleeve than that just have some shock value to it That's part of the problem with cuckoo is there's no shock value. No, not none at all. None.
01:11:13
Speaker
Yeah, so next week, Alien Romulus will be together, will be in person. Yeah, we're going to have to figure out how that's going to work, but I already got it in my head. Damn, you're good. I'm i'm trying. ah We will not be seeing it together, but we will be reviewing it together in person. No video. Sorry. Sorry. Audio only. um Yeah, we will see you next week for Alien Romulus. ah Tata. Tata.
