After The Final Pour S3E4 - Revolution Brewing "Freedom of Expression"

The Malting Hour
Avatar

On this episode we crack open Revolutions "Freedom of Expression". We also get sidetracked a talk about other beers before finally discussing the beer we're drinking. From Revolution: This Strawberry Rhubarb version of our easy-drinking Session Sour brings added tartness from the addition of rhubarb mixed with the bright fruit strawberry flavor. You'll swear you just drank a pie. Thanks to Kevin and Deb Goggin for the theme song.

Podcast Introduction and Tonight's Drink

00:00:30
Speaker
When life gives you an empty cup
00:00:44
Speaker
Unsafe but great totally totally totally all right Welcome to after the final pour we are here In our basements Brandon, what are we drinking tonight, man? This was your this is your pick. We both happen to have this in our refrigerator, which is kind of a random thing I
00:01:05
Speaker
Yeah, and it was a random pick and it is a great pick. I hope. Yeah.

Tasting Revolution Brewing's Freedom of Expression

00:01:11
Speaker
Revolution Brewing's freedom of expression. So I will admit I have not actually had this. Neither have I. And they just released another one, which has blue. And I want to say like I haven't had it. Like I've I took a sip from my wife's. I bought it for her. But I'm glad that I have it because.
00:01:32
Speaker
It works out for this perfectly for us to do. And after the final pour. And I just randomly told Tony that I had this and he was like, I have the two. Yeah, I got it. Clark Clark gave it to me a little while ago and I was waiting for the first time to drink it. I was going to share it with Laura, but I have so many other sour things I can share with her that this is going to be just us. Are you pouring in a glass? Because maybe I should grab. Yes. All right. I'm going to do the same thing.
00:02:02
Speaker
OK, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool. So I can see the color of it. I don't want to. So all their freedom beers are sours and they're all been pretty good. And you actually got a keg of what? Freedom of speech?
00:02:18
Speaker
Yes, the is that is freedom of speech just the base or is because I thought they have a freedom of like peach. I could be completely wrong on that. Well, we'll see being wrong on the podcast. But freedom of speech is their peach beer. So it's both.
00:02:37
Speaker
I was right. So that could be the base beer. But I mean, I mean, the grain milk could probably be the base. But let's see. And that's that's what I'm going to go with. It's a session. So freedom of speech is spelled S P E A C H. Like speech, like peach with an S. OK, so that's what you that's the.
00:02:59
Speaker
That is the keg that you got during quarantine. Correct. And so this one, freedom of expression, you had said, what is it? A raspberry rhubarb. Strawberry rhubarb. Strawberry rhubarb. I don't know anything.
00:03:17
Speaker
Yeah, because on the can it says sour session ale with strawberries and rhubarb. Well, it's dark in my basement. I have very little lights except for what's shining on me from my computer. And I'm on the revolution website looking at freedom of speech. You know, this is fucking. You're not a video. Turn the lights up. Turn the lights up. I don't have. That's the thing. I don't have the lights. I have to install the can lights in the basement still one day, one day.
00:03:44
Speaker
Uh, this is really good. I really, I mean, I, I really enjoyed the freedom of speech, but, uh, this is awesome.

Exploring the Freedom Series

00:03:51
Speaker
I dig it or dig it a lot. Yeah, I agree. So I like this better than the freedom of speech. Um, and the only reason I got this originally was like, um, well, it was a sour beer. So, and I know my wife would like it, but.
00:04:08
Speaker
they do strawberry and rhubarb, and they have this memory, and it's not so much memory, it is a reality. My aunt used to make the strawberry rhubarb bars, and they were one of the best things I've ever had, because she would grow rhubarb in her garden up at her lake house, which is conveniently located a couple doors down from my family's lake house.
00:04:36
Speaker
So they would grow this and I was like, holy shit, that's awesome. And she made that and I was like, this tastes like nothing. Anyway, so it was an amazing bar.
00:04:49
Speaker
But this beer is, the flavor is so reminiscent of the strawberry rhubarb together in that bar that it was like, this is awesome. So like I said, I haven't drank it. It's very refreshing. I haven't drank a full one. I took a couple sips like every time I poured one for my wife, but I was like,
00:05:09
Speaker
This is when i took the first step of my that's what it reminds me of and that's why i recommended it to her so yeah totally awesome i'm kind of. Not bummed but i'm kind of bummed that i'm drinking this now because this would have been a really good.
00:05:27
Speaker
warm day beer, but I'm totally I'm not disappointed. You could have drank it while you were brewing earlier today. Yeah, full disclosure. I brewed today. I've had a couple of really good beers today that I'm not going to mention because that's not what this episode is about. But I've had a couple of beers, which is the only reason why we do after the final course, because that's what makes it good. But man, this would have been a great during the day beer. It's really good. Now I wish I had more.
00:05:57
Speaker
And I'm on Rev's webpage or their Facebook page. And the one I was referencing is their newest one, Freedom of Assembly, which is tart blueberries and aromatic ginger. My wife would not like it, but that sounds delicious to me. I would like it. And my wife would probably like it. So Laura is not a fan of ginger at all, especially from Gilligan's Island. She hates ginger.
00:06:26
Speaker
And then we all wonder why you're still married to her. Oh, no, she's awesome. So she's she's pretty sorry, Laura. I love you. Not like you're not like you listen to this. Yeah, she was doing anyways. It was funny. I was trying to give something funny to say, but then you came in with the I'm sorry, Laura. Yeah, no, the the freedom, the whole freedom series. It's kind of random, actually. I was just kind of I was looking it up.
00:06:56
Speaker
It's their sour beers. And when you go to their webpage, you look up freedom of speech and then you can go to the, or look up their beers and look at the freedom series. It's basically freedom of speech and freedom of press. But now we have freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. So I kind of like the way that they're going with this, doing the fruit and sours. They're pretty, I mean,
00:07:19
Speaker
I don't know how much more I can talk about Revolution being amazing. They've become the new goose island of our podcast. What I was going to say was like the cool thing about their site is there's actually a freedom section.
00:07:43
Speaker
Yeah, that's what I was going to say. On the freedom section, you've got freedom of speech and freedom of press. Those are the two that you can see. I think those are like what is current, I guess. Yeah.
00:07:55
Speaker
Well, and then if you keep going down, you can see freedom of expression on their small batch series. As far as I wonder, it's like if it's not current, if it gets dumped down there. Oh, well, it's a small batch. So freedom of expression was a small batch. And then, you know, their actual freedom series, the freedom of speech and freedom of press, both sessions hours, one comes with currents, one is with peach.
00:08:23
Speaker
speech being peach, current being press. Those are readily available. I want to say those are the beginning of the year and then, yeah. So freedom of press is in the beginning of the year, but also at the end of the year. So it's like January, February, March, April, and then comes back around November and December.
00:08:51
Speaker
And then you got in the keg being freedom of speech that's available in between for May, June, July, August, September, and October. So right now you can still get freedom of speech at stores if you're in Chicago or I think Ohio, Iowa, and New York.
00:09:11
Speaker
I believe those are where they do. If you're somewhere. If you're somewhere. But yeah, man, freedom of expression is really good. I'm kind of bummed I don't have more of it. Hopefully I can maybe sneak around and see if I can find some more of this lying around somewhere. As I'm finding out in Chicago, there's plenty of small liquor stores that have everything. So this came out in June, and we're drinking this now in September.
00:09:41
Speaker
It's three months old. It's really good. And what was the other one? Freedom of Assembly just came out. That's the blueberry ginger one. So now I got to grab some of that. Apparently after the final four is just going to be revolution beers now, because this is the third of season three that we're doing a revolution beer. Son

Comparing Revolution Brewing and Goose Island

00:10:03
Speaker
of a bitch.
00:10:04
Speaker
Well, thank you revolution for making great beers. That is true. And as we approach, as I did on the episode of emptying out the fridge, there's plenty of barrel aged beers about to come from revolution. So I guess we're just going to do after the final pour revolution edition. Well, man, this was a good choice. Thanks for picking this. I'm glad we both had it. And I'm looking forward to doing freedom of assembly with you.
00:10:35
Speaker
Yeah, me too. I mean, I'm glad I said that while you were drinking. Well, I was gonna say, I was like, I know we didn't get like, too into it, but Oh, yeah, you know, yeah, I'm sorry. Go ahead. Yeah, talk about it. Anyone that's fans of like strawberry and rhubarb, like, you get both of those flavors in here. And rhubarb is such a tough flavor. It's so hard to like,
00:10:57
Speaker
Like it. Yeah. Rhubarb around its own is very bitter and like, you know, all this other stuff. But that's what makes it go so well in a sour. So like doing this is great. And I think who else does a rhubarb here? Is it Nucleus? Yes, they do. Nucleus. Yeah. Do a rhubarb beer. I actually just. Yeah. I took a picture of my fridge. I got another.
00:11:25
Speaker
from Jeff's daughter, Christine. I had Christina. I have another random new glares beer, Cranbeck 2020 in my fridge. I have like five random fruited and random wild ales from new glares. It's the first time I probably had that in my refrigerator instead of like their flagship beers. But sorry, go ahead. I know. Like that's what I was saying. It was like.
00:11:53
Speaker
I don't know.
00:11:55
Speaker
where you can get it or who else makes something like this. But I do think, yeah, New Glares does, they definitely do the, is it strawberry or just strawberry? Yeah, they do. I believe it's strawberry. We've talked about this and I know I'm like. This is the fun of doing after the final pour, all bets are off. We've had a couple of drinks, nothing means anything. People are listening to this on a random Monday morning and being like, I remember my weekend, I was talking to two guys. Although. They were drunk like this.
00:12:27
Speaker
One day it'll come back. What I mean by one day it'll come back is normalcy. And so with, um, um, New Glarus, uh, there's a fest that happens in New Glarus, Wisconsin. Is it actually? Yeah, no. Are you talking about the bacon in the town? Are you talking about the bacon and beer festival?
00:12:53
Speaker
Yes, that is a new Glaris. They've always done this pretty cool thing where you can come in with if you bring an X amount of pounds of rhubarb. Rhubarb? Yes. Yeah, you're right. They do do the strawberry rhubarb. Yes, man. And they probably have one sitting somewhere, somewhere, somewhere. Over there. And it's there. And it's somewhere. And it'll get drank when it get drunks.
00:13:22
Speaker
Anyway, but dude, like that fest is awesome. I mean, not to deter from our excellent conversation about revolution. Which we just talked about all of their freedom beers. We didn't mean to talk, you did talk about it briefly, but.
00:13:41
Speaker
I just want everyone to know about the awesomeness of this fest. And I've talked about it before in the podcast, this fest that happens in New Glares. Oh, we talked about it in the New Glares episode again. That thing is awesome. If it happens, so.
00:13:57
Speaker
So what I'm going to do to my promise to you is if we have some sense of normalcy happening again, I will reserve a room somewhere somehow.

Future Brewery Visits and Podcast Wrap-up

00:14:11
Speaker
Oh, yeah. We'll just hold it and we'll see how life goes. And if life gets bad again or continues to be as bad as it is right now, we cancel. Yeah, whatever. Cool. Cool. Cool. I like it. But I think we definitely need to try to go to that best.
00:14:25
Speaker
Yeah, that's- And bring microphones. That's a full episode, baby. Computers and interns that we don't have, somebody else that wants to come and hold our microphones. We should get some interns. By the way, Strawberry Rhubarb was available from New Glarus back in July and August. Yep.
00:14:47
Speaker
I'm going to bring it back around. We both went off topic and did not really talk about the beer. This is a great beer.
00:15:05
Speaker
perfect example of after the final pour, freedom of expression from revolution. Strawberry rhubarb sour is a fantastic and new Clarice strawberry rhubarb. We're coming for you, baby. And I'm heading up to Wisconsin soon. So I'm going to be on the lookout even though I'm two months, but I know actually only be one month behind, depending on when this comes out. Who the fuck knows? Could be today. Could be tomorrow. Could be
00:15:34
Speaker
Whatever, baby. Good choice, Brandon. Thanks, man. Thanks for choosing this. Yeah, yeah. It was good. Hand in the cooler, pull out beer. I'm looking forward to the 20 other revolution beers we have for after the final pour.
00:15:53
Speaker
Hey look, they make a lot of beer, and they make a lot of good beer, and they're local, and we like them, and we drink them when we drink them. Revolution, can we just get you on the show at this point? Come on. Tell you, we gotta talk to John. John's the guy. I like your style. All right, let's do this. Let's wrap it up. This has been a good after the final pour, probably. This isn't after the final pour I don't want to listen to,
00:16:23
Speaker
I got to, baby. I got to. Cheers, Brandon. Love you, man. Thank you. Cheers, man. Love you too, man. Peace. Thanks, everybody.
