Hello and welcome to Breast Implant Illness Hope for Healing. This is Cecily Henderson, your host. Thank you for joining me today.
FDA Testing and Warnings Recap
00:00:12
Speaker
Last week's podcast was about the FDA toxicological testing and black box warnings for breast implants.
Autoimmune Links to Implant Complications
00:00:22
Speaker
Today, we are going to be talking about a subject that is very concerning and women need to understand before explant surgery. There is an autoimmune link to biofilm, bacteria, and mold in breast implant capsules.

I have been working with clients and patients over the last five years that have gut microbiome, mold, autoimmune and biofilm infections of the body. I am not a doctor. I am a functional medicine practitioner with medical training and certifications for these specific conditions.
2020 Study on Breast Implant Illness
00:01:25
Speaker
I would like to talk about a case study that was done April of 2020 by the Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Global Open. It was led by four researchers. I will provide you with the study reference and link at the end of the podcast.

This study followed 50 patients who wanted exploitation due to breast implant illness symptoms. The researchers analyzed their symptoms and followed up with a questionnaire. Implants and capsules were removed and blocked. Implants were photographed. Each implant shell and capsule was sent to the lab for histology and microbiological cultures.
Bacterial Cultures and Health Impacts
00:02:15
Speaker
The results identified positive bacterial cultures in 36% of the breast implant illness patients, compared with 6% of the control groups. The most common organism was P. acnes bacteria. 84% of BII patients reported partial

or complete resolution of symptoms after exploitation. None of the 50 patients would consider having breast implants again.
P. acnes and Systemic Illnesses
00:02:50
Speaker
The conclusion of the study was that P. acnes is being explored as a pathogen with various rheumatological disorders, including thyroid disease, granulomas, eye problems, and arthritis. The possibility that chronic P. acnes infection of the breast implant shell and capsule could cause systemic illnesses and needs to be explored.
00:03:21
Speaker
Now this study focused on women with breast implant illness. ah The researchers tried to identify why these women with BII had a variety of symptoms. Now it was found, you know, 30% of the women had bacteria in their implant shell and capsule. which was the P. agnes bacteria. ah This caused most of their symptoms and the researchers you know wanted to explore the possibility that P. agnes was causing their symptoms. ah This specific bacteria is found in the armpit, skin, and hair follicles.

It was noted that all 50 women with breast implants that participated partially or completely improved once their implants were taken out and would not consider them again.
Personal Account: Cecily's Experience with P. acnes

Speaker
Now, I had a great surgeon who offered a microbiologic analysis and biopsy of my breast implant capsules. It was found that 90% of my left breast implant capsule was covered in P. acne's bacteria and biofilms. There are other microbes such as mold, fungus, viral and parasitical pathogens that can grow on the implant shell and capsule. All this information can be found
00:04:48
Speaker
In my free breast implant course in lesson six, neurological and infection risks. My doctor realized that my arthritis was being caused by the P. acne's bacteria. I'd had that infection ever since my surgery, my implant surgery, which had been there slow growing for more than 14 years. If I would not have received the proper capsule biopsies, I would not have known this and could not have received the proper care and treatment. I am doing great, by the way. I'm doing wonderful.
Treatment and Recovery Journey
00:05:30
Speaker
I had to receive three rounds.
00:05:33
Speaker
of IV antibiotics in the hospital because of this serious infection.
Choosing the Right Surgeon
00:05:39
Speaker
Now, if you are looking to explant, please find a surgeon willing to do a microbiologic analysis and biopsy of the capsule. I know that Dr. Kahn and a few surgeons are offering this test, but most surgeons do not.
Conclusion and Hopeful Message
00:05:57
Speaker
and you have to specifically ask or you will only receive cancer testing on the biopsy. Thank you for joining me today and always remember, there is hope for healing.
