Nathan's Rest and True North Goaltending Acknowledgment

00:00:29
Speaker
Um, It has been a chaotic couple of weeks to, to say the least here. That's why i am running it back solo today. Nathan, currently taking a rest as of right now and it's a well-deserved guy has been hard at work um you know doing everything on the kind of the business side of things when it comes to true north goaltending um running or coming up with practice plans for our evaluations kind of our rubrics for evaluations and just doing a lot of um a lot of stuff to you know
00:01:03
Speaker

00:02:05
Speaker
um I am jumping on the pod today um after having my thoughts a little bit scatterbrained here. This is like my fourth time trying to record this. Yeah. Thoughts are a little scatterbrained just because, you know, evaluations and all that. Just my week's been chaotic, to say the least.

Post-Evaluation Advice

00:02:23
Speaker
But I did just want to jump on here today and talk about um life post-evaluations. um You know, talking about what to do when we didn't make the team, what to do if we did make the team, and how the role of the parent kind of plays a huge impact and maybe something for parents to just kind of take a step back and think about, um you know,
00:02:45
Speaker
Now that evaluations is all said and done, um if your evaluations or tryouts are all said and done. um And then later on the episode for all my older goaltenders out there, we did get a listener question, which we are super thankful for.
00:02:58
Speaker
And it's talking about, you know, how to be better or how to get how to maximize your development as an older goaltender um without breaking the bank. So we are going to touch on that today as well.
00:03:10
Speaker
um So jumping in into the first segment here, talking about post-evaluations. First off, I really, really hope that everybody had a good evaluation or trial, and hopefully that everybody has made the team that they want to make.
00:03:22
Speaker
Sadly, in the game of hockey, much like in life, we don't always get the job that we want. So now what we need to do is take a step back and evaluate, you know, what, where do we go from here? How do we handle this situation?
00:03:36
Speaker
And um what do we need to do in order to be better to get to that next level? So, Like I said before, you know, the game of hockey, it's much like a job. We're all applying for a job. You know, we're all trying to apply for a position, you know, um and sometimes we just we just don't get it.
00:03:54
Speaker
And so I have seen far too many times and I've dealt with it myself, which I've openly talked about. Um, that's, you know, we, you know, parent or we as goaltenders, you know, we tend to shut down, we cry, we get upset, we get mad and we blame everybody but ourselves sometimes, you know, that we didn't make the team or that's, uh, you know, we didn't get tiered at a level that maybe we should be at, um, yeah.
00:04:21
Speaker
Like I've said, I've talked i've talked about opening on the pod before, but I'll just kind of recap it here is that, you know, I was placed on a level in U18 that I shouldn't have been at. And so it was a three month battle with the ah with the organization to get me playing at a tier, at a level that, you know, I should have been at to begin with.

Maintaining Motivation After Evaluations

00:04:38
Speaker
And yeah.
00:04:39
Speaker
Unfortunately, then it was kind of too little too late and kind of went at it from there. so um where So where do we go from here, goalies? Where do we go now that you know we didn't make the team that we wanted to make?
00:04:51
Speaker
The first thing that we need to remember is that at the end of the day, after everything's said and done, we still have a job to do. We still, um we're still playing the sport. We're still, um, very grateful and should be honored to be playing the game that we love in the position that we love.
00:05:07
Speaker
Um, so we're putting everything aside. Now we have to look forward ahead and into the season. So if we just decide to mope and be, upset and just kind of be reclusive or, you know, just kind of treat everybody like, um like, like, like crap, um you know, it's not going to bode well and it's not going to transfer over well to the next season. And the same thing goes with our development as well. if We just decided, you know, to say, screw it.
00:05:31
Speaker
um You know, I'm just not going to try as hard this year, you know, because I didn't make the level that I wanted to be at. same thing, it is going to falter and you are going to fall further down that rabbit hole, um you know, and you're not going to end up making the team that you want to be on next year.
00:05:45
Speaker
So we need to put nose to the grindstone and maybe start working a little bit harder and maybe start working on things that, you know, we aren't comfortable working on or, you know, that maybe we weren't focusing on so much um in the off season.
00:06:02
Speaker
um whether that be your skating, your tracking, your positioning, your angles, whatever that may be, your post-save execution or post-save recovery or your post-to-post stuff, whatever that may be.
00:06:14
Speaker
Like i said, scatterbrained. um we We need to put Minosa to the grindstone and remember that we still a job to do at the end of the day. you know As goalies, much like as people, we always want to get better.
00:06:26
Speaker
And so how do we do that? You know, um, again, which i kind of talk about, which I'll talk about kind of later on this pod, but, you know, talk to your goalie coach, you know, i'll say like, Hey, I didn't make the team. Cause X, Y, zd If you do get the opportunity to, you know, get some feedback about,
00:06:43
Speaker
um you know, what you did wrong or why didn't you make the team? You know, if you have the opportunity to talk to your goalie coach and say, hey, coach, I didn't make the team because of X, Y, Z. And what can we do to work on that?

Considering Coaching Changes for Improvement

00:06:54
Speaker
And then you can work on that throughout throughout the season.
00:06:57
Speaker
um Maybe time maybe it's time to switch up your coaches in general. um You know, the Oilers just i really yeah I talk about this, but the Oilers reluctantly let go of Dustin Schwartz. um brought in a new guy and maybe and you know in all honesty it probably is a good thing for the team because it ah it provides a different voice that's maybe that's just sometimes what we need as goalies as well as that um excuse me we need more we need we just need a different voice more tools in the toolbox and so it's never really a bad thing to mix it up switch coaches you know because maybe coach a has a different insight or a different idea than coach b did right so um that is an option um come to us true north goaltending.com
00:07:34
Speaker
And, um you know, and um that is another option for you as well. You know, if we have, you know, when when we go into our games, you know, we want to play the game. we don't want to We don't want to play the game at the level that it's at. We want to play the game.
00:07:50
Speaker
um you know at the level that we want to play at you know so even if you know maybe the shots aren't as hard or you know the skating isn't as fast or whatever we still want to treat it as if we are playing at the level that we are at because we want we don't want to revert back start to create bad habits that ultimately are going to kind of mess you up in the long run if you will um So we we we still want to continue to be creating good habits and be having a good work ethic um and and and a battle and a compete at a level um you know that we are already at or that we want to be at compared to before.
00:08:30
Speaker
Um, if you have opportunities as well, you know, to affiliate at the next level, I definitely think that's a, that's, that's a good option, you know, cause it'll get you that exposure as well.
00:08:43
Speaker
I'll be, it maybe won't translate very well into the grand scheme of things, but it does, but getting that exposure, at least to an extent to say that, Hey, I get, Hey, I want to play at this level or that I deserve to be playing at this level. And let me show you, you know, so every time that you get to affiliate or,
00:08:59
Speaker
be a call-up for a game, you know, you get that opportunity to, you know, show whoever's there that you do that you do deserve to be at that to be at that next level. You know, we see it all the time, you know, with NHL players, AHL players, you know, that get the call-up to the show and, you know, they're obviously...
00:09:16
Speaker
trying to prove that, you know, that they belong there. Right. So, well, there's been a few good AHL goaltenders that have gotten the call up and have managed to actually stay um on the team. I think Jordan Binnington is actually probably one of the more famous ones of that um As an example, Stuart's going to put it in there, but you know it is it is what it is.
00:09:36
Speaker
um So

Understanding Roles and Continuing Improvement

00:09:38
Speaker
that translates to what do we do as a goaltender if we did make the team? you know we got Hey, we made it. we got We got to play at the level you know that we're at We got to make that AA, AAA team.
00:09:49
Speaker
Now where do we go from here? um From my kind of personal experience, um not at the double A, triple A level, but definitely at a junior level as a coach, um I've had first year goaltenders that come onto the team, you know, that they want the starter's job right away.
00:10:05
Speaker
I'm going to tell you guys right now, that's not going to happen. Okay, we need to first off, number one, understand the role that we are in. And whether that be as a backup role or as a starter's role or as a call-up role, you need to understand that, you know, what is your job? What is your role?
00:10:25
Speaker
And lot and generally for not a lot of goaltenders that, you know, our first time in juniors or first time in double A or triple A teams, it's going to be the backup role. Hit the burst your bubble. It is what it is there.
00:10:39
Speaker
um But do we want to just kind of be content where we are? No, absolutely not. We still want to continue to work to get better and to be able to prove and to show our coaches and the organization that we are at the level that we want to be at and that we want to show that we want to stay at this level that we want to be at.
00:11:00
Speaker
Um, so it doesn't mean that, you know, anything in training takes an off day. It doesn't mean that, you know, that maybe we lighten up in practice or a little bit more, you know, we just, we, we, um, start to, I want to say like put on a false identity. That's not what I'm trying to say, but it's kind of what I'm saying.
00:11:18
Speaker
Um, you know, that we don't want to start on, like not even like start showing your true colors. Cause like you want to do that from the start. You want to showcase who you are as a person, as a goalie. But like we don't want to like basically lie in a sense, to um to our coaches or our GMs or the evaluators who say, oh, yeah, no, this guy deserves to be there.
00:11:37
Speaker
And then come to find out a couple months later that they're kind of biting themselves in the butt, basically. Yeah. it's You guys get the idea of what I'm trying to say, but you know we we want we want to still continue to be working at the level that we want to be at and continue to push forward um and you know um yeah just push forward and you know just continue grinding away ah you know to prove that we want to be at the level that we want to be at. so ah For those that did make their teams and or the level that they want to play at, congratulations to you.

Parental Support and Its Impact

00:12:10
Speaker
Keep working um and, you know, take it from there.
00:12:15
Speaker
um Then lastly, um before I jump into that, and I think this kind of like a is a good transition point, is that whether you did make the team that you wanted to be at or you didn't make the team where you wanted to be at and the parents that are kind of coming into this, is that recognize that sometimes that we are going to be dealing with less than favorable people, which I've talked about before.
00:12:38
Speaker
um And sometimes, you know, we just need to understand that we cannot control the uncontrollables. um When I grew up playing as an example, a lot of the evaluators that I had were just parent volunteers.
00:12:52
Speaker
So you can imagine the type of... I don't want to say corruption, but I'm going to say favoritism, we'll say. um ah How much of that played a role? How much of that played a factor into um and to kind of where I ended up putting that aside?
00:13:08
Speaker
um But how so how do we deal with that as parents? And I'm going to say that we don't, you know, we just, you know, we obviously sometimes it's not fair um or sometimes that we feel that we've been cheated or stood up or whatever.
00:13:25
Speaker
um The biggest thing, you know, that I'll always say is that, you know, as goalies, we have to be adaptable. As people, we should be adaptable um and just kind of roll with the punches. So, um you know, unless it's absolutely, absolutely warranted that you need to go to your organization to, you know, please your case that, you know, that you don't, that you shouldn't, that you are not at the level or the...
00:13:49
Speaker
the, the, you're not playing for the team that you know, that you should be playing for. It's one of those things where we just kind of have to take a step back, let it go and, um you know, take a different avenue or take a different approach to um where you guys want to be in the next, to in the next season.
00:14:04
Speaker
Um, now transitioning into the, into the parent side of things, so um, as a new dad myself, um, I feel like I kind of have a better leg to stand on than I did before.
00:14:14
Speaker
Um, and although my daughter's not in sport yet, um, we need to understand as parents that our number one job, as we've said it before, many times on this podcast, that, um, your guys's job is to be their number one fan, your athletes, number one fan,
00:14:32
Speaker
Even if you are there as a volunteer coach or as a coach, you are number one fan first. um Sometimes their biggest critic, although I feel like your athlete is probably the bigger critic than you are.
00:14:44
Speaker
um But we as parents are there to support our kids. Again, as a new dad of myself, I'm slowly understand slowly understanding that i've I've dealt with or have...
00:14:58
Speaker
Yeah, I've dealt with a lot of parents throughout my coaching career. um You know, that will have told me that, oh, yeah, they do. Oh, Johnny didn't make the team because the coach sucks or they hate us or whatever.
00:15:11
Speaker
And I feel like sometimes if you have to say that, then, you know, you kind of have to take a step back and go, really? um Anyways, maybe that's why we didn't make the team. um There are some crazy parents out there. I'll tell you that for sure.
00:15:24
Speaker
um so
00:15:28
Speaker
As parents, you know like I said, we need to be our kids' number one supporter. And we need to understand that our kids look up to us and that if we...
00:15:43
Speaker
let our opinions and our emotions blind us and um oh what's the word i'm looking for like if we let like our opinions and emotions blind us and we start spewing things that you know are maybe meant to supposed to be between one parent over the other Or if we start saying that to our kids, it's like, Johnny, you didn't make the team because coach Zed hates you or you didn't make the team because you suck at skating or whatever.
00:16:13
Speaker
Your kids are going to take that to heart. Your kids are going to take that and they're going to parrot it back. You know? Um, oh yeah. Coach didn't make the coach. I didn't make the team because the coach doesn't like me or, you know, whatever.
00:16:26
Speaker
And then that does start to create that reputation. And that does start to create a negative influence for both on the kid and for on you. So parents, I implore you, please, um that we take a step back and we just understand that we may have our opinions and which we're within our right to do so.
00:16:49
Speaker
But our opinions need to be kept to ourselves. They don't need to be relayed to our kids they don't need to be um kind of posted online or whatever um it's one of those things where it's just we just need to be there for our kids and support them in any way that we can.
00:17:11
Speaker
Cause we don't want to be that parent that is preventing our kids from getting to the next level because the coaches or the GMs or whoever doesn't want to deal with the parent. Um, so that's the only way I can really put it. And that's why, like I've said it in other pods before, is that like my daughter or, um yeah, if my daughter goes into hockey or this or into some other type of sports, I'm stepping back. I'm being a parent. I'm not getting involved in that stuff whatsoever. So, um,
00:17:37
Speaker
One of you being the same ring probably But that's That's the point that I'm trying to make um At the end of the day there so just Parents just be there for your kids Support them But they don't need to know They don't need to know your opinions um Because we don't want that parroted back Basically so So yeah, so um there was it was a lot of words that I kind of put together there. So hopefully there was there was some takeaway from that.
00:18:07
Speaker
um And so now we're going into more of the ah the interesting stuff here. So um I want to talk about this kind of development with...
00:18:19
Speaker
kind of the older goalies and especially for those like that are in beer league or just kind of adult leagues, um, in general.

Affordable Goalie Technique Improvements

00:18:26
Speaker
And, uh, I'll jump into the listener question here in a second, but, uh, um, just kind of just some stuff that I can ring off just off the top of my head is that, you know, if you want to be better, um, you know, without breaking the bank, um, um,
00:18:40
Speaker
You know, if we're able to get some extra ice, great. If there's a coach that you can reach out to that is willing to train you, we do that. Goalies at true northgoaltending.com. um You know, um those are just kind of some of the most options that I can think of off the top my head.
00:18:58
Speaker
Um, so let's jump into our listener questioner here, uh, from Aaron Buckler. Aaron, thank you very much for submitting this. We appreciate you. it says, hello, I've been listening to the podcast for the last six months and I've enjoyed all the insight you provided into being a goalie on and off the ice question. How can an adult goalie improve their technique without breaking the bank on private lessons?
00:19:19
Speaker
TLDR. I'm 40 years old and started playing goalie when i was eight. I learned a two pad stack in my first camp in 1993. I love that. um I've had about 30 hours of instruction since then.
00:19:31
Speaker
I've only ever played in-house slash recreational hockey as an adult goalie. I essentially have to use pickup skates to practice new skills that I see or read about online. It's an incredibly slow process. I understand.
00:19:44
Speaker
um I'm trying out for A-level teams in Boston going up against 20-somethings with ACHE or NCAA experience. I'm getting good feedback and was offered a squad as a practice goal in one of the teams. However, I want to make the team's roster.
00:19:58
Speaker
One GM gave me the following feedback. I would say to rely less on your size and be a little quicker as I have noticed i've also noticed some tension in your movements. Lastly, I think you can be a little more confident considering that your size, 225 pounds, um that is a huge asset that not many goalies have at this level.
00:20:17
Speaker
I know I haven't reached my ceiling, but I'm unsure how to get to that next level. I figure I need to improve my box control, beating the past, tracking and following with my eyes. I go to the gym two, three times per week, which is two, three times more than I go to the gym um and play a two, three times per week, which is also two, three times that I go to.
00:20:33
Speaker
B-level league and pickup skates with XD1 and D3 players in their 40s and 50s. I've had a few thoughts, and I'm curious to hear how you might approach this scenario. Ideas, practicing skating patterns alone. i have access to the rink for $25 an hour, depending on availability. I just don't have anyone to shoot on me. Fly me down to Boston. I would gladly come and shoot.
00:20:53
Speaker
Attend camp. I'm in Boston. Stopping goaltending is the gold standard, but I'm in a unique position trying to incorporate skills that their college and pro goalies have all already mastered. Also, I'm not keen on the blank. And and so it kind of it kind of trails on, but we do kind of lose kind of the rest of the question there. So I don't know if that's Nathan screwing up or if that's our email system screwing up, but I'm going to leave it there. But Aaron, thank you very much for the question. I appreciate you a lot.
00:21:20
Speaker
for doing that. And there's just, there is a lot to unpack here. So i'm going to try and unpack some of this stuff here without kind of going into specifics, I guess. Um, but the general question here is just how can an add adult goalie improve their technique without breaking the bank?
00:21:35
Speaker
Which I've kind of talked about, you know, already, you know, and Aaron's put himself in a good position here where he's got access to a rink for $25 an hour. Just unfortunately, he doesn't have anybody to shoot on him. So if you do have that same um ability, you know, to get ice, you know, at a decent price, and if you are able to be able to bring some people out.
00:21:52
Speaker
Um, that is definitely an option. Um, immediately as I was reading this as well, sensorina was another one that had come to my mind. I've never actually looked into kind of the prices for sensorina. So you guys are watching me do this. If you are, um,
00:22:07
Speaker
ah like watching on the YouTube side of things on the fly. I think they're like, I know I've been curious a lot to try this. And um as much as I would absolutely love to get this, I feel like it's expensive as all heck.
00:22:23
Speaker
um Let me see here. Okay. So, yeah, so, so they do have um quite a few things um on the sensorina side of things. So I'm assuming rather that if you do have a um VR headset um that you can go for the annual plan, which is $42 a month, or the standard monthly plan, which is $79 a month.
00:22:46
Speaker
Wow. Or if you don't have a VR headset, you can get one for $89.95 $895 or you can get the MetaQuest um
00:23:01
Speaker
what's the difference why is one like a thousand a hundred and seventy five which is virtually the same thing. One's like the meta quest three. The other one's like the meta quest three S I'm not entirely sure what the difference is there, but if you do have a headset that you can get, then you can just do the, the 42 or 79. Or if you don't have a headset, then you are going to be unfortunately spending a little bit more money.
00:23:23
Speaker
um But sensorina is an option ah to say the least. If you are kind of within that ah ability to do so, um, like again like some other things as well mean like he's aaron's kind of talked about it already you know like stop a goaltending in massachusetts is a big one um but you know there are other goalie coaching companies that you know i'm sure can accommodate we used to be able to do it um once upon a time which we don't necessarily anymore which i need to yell at nathan for uh to get us back into doing that but uh um
00:23:57
Speaker
and like ah But again, like if you have a coach that is able to you know do some one-on-one training or one-on-three training you know to be able to do that, I think that is i think that is definitely an option. um The downsides kind of with Sense Arena or even just kind of practicing um stuff on your own is that you know there's nobody really to kind of correct you if you are doing it right or wrong.
00:24:20
Speaker
Um, so it is just kind of one of those things there that, you know, that you need to take into account. Um, but I would definitely say, you know, skating number one is a huge, huge thing for you that, uh, that needs to be done. You know, as goalies, we always said that we want to be the best skaters on the ice.
00:24:36
Speaker
And I never really understood why up until recently where, um, you know, as goalies, we work different edges, you know, we do different skating patterns compared to what players do. So, which is a lot more intricate, I think, in my opinion, than, than, than, than what we do, than than what players do. So I think, you know, skating number one that we always need to do. And especially if your coach is telling you, you know, that you need to beat the pass on your feet, basically, or if you feel that, you know, that you need to improve beating the pass on your feet.
00:25:05
Speaker
But again, a lot of that translates into as well as making sure that we're getting that good rotation that we're tracking the puck properly and we're making that, getting those good rotations in front of our body. Um, You know, that's over that sort of stuff.
00:25:17
Speaker
Pick up skates, you know, again, is another very viable option. um We just want to make sure again, the the the downside to that is that we could potentially end up creating more bad habits than we do good habits.
00:25:31
Speaker
Um, so we just want to make sure that, you know, that we are doing the correct movements and that we are creating good habits compared to bad habits, uh, essentially. So that is, so that is an option for everybody out there as well. But I mean, even then just going out there and, you know, just getting to feel pucks or whatever and, um, you know, getting a skate and I don't think it is never really anything, anything bad,

Um, you know, obviously there's a lot of online content out there as well. You know, we provide that as well. Um, but again, you know, you want to make sure that you're, you're reading up on the up to date or the more current stuff compared to, uh, compared to, um,
00:26:10
Speaker
compared to what's been done back in 1990, 1993 with the two pad stack, which I absolutely love, by the way, thank you for sharing that.

Um, and then I think lastly, as well as just video review, I don't think doing video reviews ever really a bad thing.
00:26:24
Speaker
And, you know, we offer that at true north goaltending, uh, where you can send us your video and then we can kind of dissect it, go through it. And we'd be able to, um, we'd be able to, uh, um,
00:26:36
Speaker
you know, do kind of provide our opinions and kind of show you what you need to do to be better, uh, basically. So I think that's, um, that's a, that's a big thing there as well. So, yeah, so that's kind of, um, I guess kind of where my thoughts are at from there. Like I said, like this kind of very scattered, a little all over the place, just, uh,
00:26:55
Speaker
Um, just cause of the, the, the week that we had, but Aaron, we'll, uh, we'll definitely get back to you here. 00:27:42
Speaker
But those will kind of be my um those would kind of be my ah my thoughts coming into that um Yeah, you know, just go from there. its ah i think I think, you know, in Aaron's case, and I think for you know from most goalies, a lot about what Aaron's talked about here, knows are all very good ideas, very good attributes, you know, ah each each with its with its pros and cons.
00:28:04
Speaker
um You know, biggest thing, you know, I think out of anything, number one, you know, is working on your skating. And number two is just working on your tracking, really. I don't i think just at the end of day, that's what you want to be, um you know, especially in situations like in Aaron's case, you know, especially with the pickup skates as an example, is that,
00:28:20
Speaker
you know, we want to be working on our skating and make sure that we're doing that properly loaded legs, you know, make sure following through on our rotations. Um, and then as well as, you know, working on our tracking as well, head, head down over top of the save hands out in front, shifting our body into our saving all all that, uh, all that fun stuff there. So,
00:28:37
Speaker
I definitely, ah you know, I definitely, I'm like what I'm seeing here. Like i said, Aaron, we'll, I'll get back to you on, well we'll kind of reach out to you on this here. We'll send you like a little video. um And um yeah, definitely, ah definitely go from there.
00:28:49
Speaker
