Switzerland Adventure with John Shiplett

00:00:32
Speaker
Today, we are talking about a challenge that my good old buddy, John Shiplett, decided that he wanted to do. Now, for those listening and those who actually listen to the podcast often, he's the he's the guy that we went to Switzerland and climbed the mountain. He and I, like my kindred spirit, this guy is like we are locked in.
00:00:51
Speaker
if I'm going to go travel or I'm going to go into the trenches, John Shiplett's one of the guys I'm going to bring in with me. Okay. So, uh, and just to recap, I was, I was the one who was very, um, obsessed is probably the right word of the via Ferrata.
00:01:07
Speaker
And I talked to John about it and he said that he would do it with me. And then that followed the dominoes effect ended up being that we were on the Switzerland mountain together. You can go back and listen to that podcast if you'd like.
00:01:20
Speaker
It was epic. Um, But afterwards, he's like, okay, we got to keep challenging ourselves. We got to keep kind of pushing ourselves. What is our next challenge going to be? And I was like, dude, I thought of the last one. It's on you this time.

The 75 Hard Challenge Explained

00:01:31
Speaker
Okay. so So John said, let's do the 75 hard.
00:01:36
Speaker
Now, for those of you who don't know what the 75 hard is, it's 75 days of doing basically, I think while I'm opening up my little app. Okay.
00:01:48
Speaker
okay It is doing 75 days of some multiple of things. Like for example, probably, but don't know if it's the hardest one, but it is drink a gallon of water a day for 75 days. There's no breaks.
00:02:06
Speaker
Okay. Then after doing this, the gallon of water a day, you have to try to work out twice a day, 45 minutes each time. Okay. So one needs to be outside.
00:02:19
Speaker
One needs to be inside and they needed to be three hours apart. So you can't just say, to work out for an hour and a half and that's going to count. No, it doesn't work. So it's, it's basically,
00:02:32
Speaker
those three things are one of the things. You have to also follow a diet. So let's talk about that. So you have to take, let me just read through all of this and then I'll go through an individual. So 45, 45 minute workout that could be inside forty five minutes outdoor workout Take a progress picture, kind of like at the beginning of the day, take a picture, read 10 pages of reading.
00:02:55
Speaker
So that was one I needed to do and I know I needed to do, but I just haven't done it for a while. Drink a gallon water, follow a diet and no cheat, no cheat meals or alcohol. So those are the kind of, I'd say seven things that you have to kind of click off every day, but that's what 75 hard is 45 minute, two 45 minute workouts, one progress picture, 10 page reading, drink a gallon water, follow a diet, no alcohol, no cheat meals,

Reflections on 75 Hard and Personal Growth

00:03:21
Speaker
75 days. so So as much as I didn't want to do it, I was like, well, John, if you're going to do it, I'll do it. And it was his challenge that he picked. So here we go.
00:03:28
Speaker
And we're, we're done with it. So we started in April, I want to say, and we just finished it. i don't know, maybe three weeks ago. What did I learn? i wish John was here because I'd love to hear what he had to think. But one, I feel like 10 pages a day is totally doable.
00:03:45
Speaker
But when you think about the course of 75 days, that's 750 pages. So I read a lot of books and you have to like physically read it. You can't just listen to books. Has to be like paper copy or Kindle. That's okay too, but...
00:03:58
Speaker
um And you have to, you know, 10 pages and it doesn't sound like much, but 750 pages is a lot. The gallon of water was the hardest for me. ah So my kind of strategy was drink as much as I can in the morning before like I have to work out. And then depending on my workouts, it would be if it's easier or not. So my harder workouts, more cardio, it would be a little bit easier to drink the rest of it.
00:04:22
Speaker
Um, but on the days that i went on a walk, man, I was, it just felt like I was pounding water all the time. And it was, it was a struggle. The food, um, I didn't follow a strict diet. I just took out, um, all refined sugars and bread.
00:04:37
Speaker
Um, so a cleaner diet, uh, which was really good. I ended up losing about 20 pounds, which, you know, that's kind of fun. And I could see that I was getting stronger. And, uh, but here was my biggest thing that i learned from this.
00:04:51
Speaker
How, how, uh, what's the word therapeutic? It was to put myself as like a focal point and my health, because I feel like as, as, as fathers and business owners and all these things and and mothers, even if your mother's listening or, or,
00:05:08
Speaker
women are listening. There's just times where you just serve other people to this point where you lay in bed that night and you're like, I didn't do anything for myself. Well, 75 hard is not going to let you do that. if You have to wake up and you have to think, okay, when am I going to work out?
00:05:23
Speaker
When are my two times I'm going to work out if you want to stay consistent? If at any point, this is the true rules, you failed one of those things. So if you didn't take a progress picture, you have to start all the way back to day one.
00:05:34
Speaker
um And then also John and I had this little side gig. Like if you screwed up or you're the first person who messed up, you owe the other person $200. So when you saw that donut, you're like, that's a $200 donut, right? So anyway, it was kind of fun.
00:05:48
Speaker
But for me, it was just putting myself as a priority of when you need to work out and putting that as like a first first kind of thought of the day. Say, I have to get this stuff done.
00:05:59
Speaker
i have to really think through this. If I don't get it done now, there's no way i'm going to get it done tonight because I have all these things going on. So that was actually one of my favorite parts 75 hard was thinking through that from my perspective and making sure that I kept my, I guess, health as a priority throughout the day.

Outcomes and Rewards of the Challenge

00:06:19
Speaker
So that was a challenge. I've also done podcasts where we should be pushing ourselves to take more risks and challenge, but it was John's one that brought this up. And so that was the one we did. We did it together. He also succeeded.
00:06:32
Speaker
We didn't have any cheat days. days Um, And 75 days later, I feel like we've built in this repetition of one, I should probably read more. I should obviously drink more water because I just don't drink that much.
00:06:43
Speaker
And then also just working out and making that a priority throughout the day will have lasting benefits. And so another thing that John thought is, hey, if we get this done, let's let's ah let's put some incentive you know that we can do and we can... we can don't know, have some incentive if we finish this challenge. And so he ended up saying, let's buy a new watch because we're adding years to our life.
00:07:06
Speaker
So i thought that was a fun idea. So we both bought our but our watches. We have that kind of a reminder that one, we can do hard things. We can challenge ourselves, but we can also keep ourselves as a priority when we're juggling all these other responsibilities.
00:07:19
Speaker
Kind of fun. So now if you're keeping track, I was the one who Switzerland via Ferrata. ah John was 75 hard. And so John that has challenged me to then pick our next

Next Challenge: Half Ironman in 2026

00:07:32
Speaker
challenge. So ah we have locked into our next challenge. I'm going to say it. I'm going to say it publicly. So we have to do it.
00:07:39
Speaker
ah John, if you're listening, hang on, buddy. You already know what it is, but we're go do a half Ironman next year, 2026 Des Moines, Iowa. So what does that entail? It's a half Ironman. So it's a 1.2 miles of swimming.
00:07:54
Speaker
It's 56 miles of biking, and it's a half marathon, ah one day, one sitting. So that's what we're going to as our challenge. And just to get prepared for that, we're going to run our first half marathon, I shouldn't say first, we're going to run a half marathon in October of 2025, just to kind of get us ready to go. And then we're going to We're going to do this whole Ironman thing. a little worried about the swimming. Quite honestly, that doesn't scare me the most, maybe a little bit, but it's the biking.
00:08:21
Speaker
Sitting on that bike for so long and training for that kind of makes me get clammy. So that's our challenge moving forward. But man, what a great...
00:08:32
Speaker
what a blessing it is to have a friend that's, uh, equally yoked in this kind of stuff that is constantly challenging himself. So John, thanks for being a good friend. Uh, if you are thinking about doing this 75 hard, man, I would love to hear about it. Let me know.
00:08:47
Speaker
So I can just encourage you along the way. Cause it's kind of lonely. but 75 days goes faster than you think. Uh, and 75 gallons of water is also, man, I had

Conclusion and Call to Action

00:08:57
Speaker
to pee constantly.
00:08:58
Speaker
all right. Well, that's enough. Thanks for listening to Uncommon Wealth Podcast. You've been great to just spend time with me. And ah my challenge to you is just push yourself a little bit, put something on the calendar and do something hard. You won't regret it. Thanks for listening.
