I'm your host, Philip Ramsey. Man, don't you just love that beat? That fat intro song is dialed in. Okay, let's
Are Family Vacations Investments in Memories?
00:00:37
Speaker
move on. So but I got a couple things to talk through today. The first one being family vacations, okay?
00:00:44
Speaker
ah We all love them and we all hate them. if you're ah If you're a father out there or you're the one who's in control of the finances, who is listening to this podcast, you know what I mean. Like, It's all great, but it's an investment. And one we've talked about before on making sure that you think about this stuff as an investment in your family.
00:01:02
Speaker
So maybe spending money isn't always that. What is the word? Hard. But it's just a different perspective in order to go into vacation and to be able to think through like, hey, this isn't always, but I'm investing in my family and this will produce things that I feel like will be lasting memories for my family.
00:01:22
Speaker
And again, we've never heard or I've never heard of a person on his gurney at the last stages of life. feel like I wish I would have gotten more money. It's like I wish I would have spent more time with my kids. I wish I would have poured into my family on kind of like these memory dividends or these.
00:01:35
Speaker
um Memories, let's just say that.
Annual Family Trips to Park Rapids
00:01:39
Speaker
Okay, so family vacations, we've been doing this thing. Actually, i believe it was my aunt and uncle, Pam and Wally, who went up to Park Rapids, a man, 40 some years ago.
00:01:51
Speaker
And then they started inviting my my parents. And then it started kind of snowballing into this pretty big thing where now every year we go kind of like the last week of July, first week of August to Park Rapids.
00:02:03
Speaker
And we all kind of just go up there. And now it's, I guess you could call it a family reunion in such a way because all of my aunts go. My grandparents started going, ah but now they've passed away.
00:02:15
Speaker
ah But now all my aunts and uncles go and then their kids go. There's always usually around 45, 48. one point we had like 63, I think even. But we all go and then we go to this resort.
00:02:28
Speaker
ah We get to hang out. It's amazing. like And people are like, oh, it's a family reunion. I don't feel like that at all. I feel like it's just like I got to go hang out with really close friends and we get to have fun. We water ski, we play pickleball, we play tennis. Obviously we're pretty active.
00:02:41
Speaker
um We swim across the lake. We play beach volleyball. We, we play cards. We just have, we jump off bridges. We just have kind of like traditions that we do and we get to go there every year. Okay.
00:02:55
Speaker
But that's not really what I was talking about today. Although I think I could do a whole podcast on the power of that and how much, i don't know, benefit that, our family gets from it just to be able to have that time.
00:03:05
Speaker
We actually do a little Sunday worship where we we sing we sing songs and then somebody from the family gives kind of a message on Sunday morning ah close to the beach so we get to see the water. It's just a cool time. Okay.
00:03:18
Speaker
Ask me some questions about that if you have any. Reach out to me. I'd love to tell you more
Family Road Trip Traditions
00:03:22
Speaker
about it. But in this particular time, my wife and i drive up there. Another thing that I feel like they do as a family, they kind of caravan.
00:03:30
Speaker
I think that's the devil. I hate caravanning. If you want to ask me something, to get me riled up. Talk about caravanning. Just the most inefficient way to drive up. So we don't do that. We ended up driving up a little bit earlier this year.
00:03:44
Speaker
I went to Minneapolis and then we went, I think it's like three hours northwest of Minneapolis to Park Rapids. Okay. We're driving and we end up going to Famous Dave. So that's kind of our tradition. We go to Famous Dave and we drive up there, we get barbecue, whatever. My wife used to work at Famous Dave. That's a fun fact.
00:04:02
Speaker
and So it's just a special place. We go up there and fun, fun ah another fun fact. This particular famous days that we went to had a coloring contest. Uh, when we were, i think my wife was pregnant with my third child and somebody's name was Oakley.
00:04:20
Speaker
And I was like, I love that name. Anyway, we ended up naming our son Oakley. So we're, We're eating our dinner at at Famous Dave's. And so, you know, and I'm thinking like, okay, like you look at the prices and and every time you go out, you're like, whoa, that's a little bit more expensive than I thought.
The Impact of Small Acts of Kindness
00:04:38
Speaker
And now we're getting older. So everyone's ordering their meal. It's great, but it's just expensive. So we get done and, and mind you, this is like right off the interstate. So there's a lot of just like single, what is it like single tables, probably truckers or people on the road, whatever.
00:04:55
Speaker
um but before we, we ate, I just, you know, Hey, who's going to pray. And my youngest Oakley was like, I'll pray. And so he prayed for us and blessed our meal. Uh, and then we had a fun time. we were just laughing and kind goofing around and, uh,
00:05:09
Speaker
just excited to go on vacation, right? We're on the first day of going up and we're all kind of excited. And so we're eating. it comes to our bill and the waiter comes over and she's like, well, she's like a gentleman already paid for your dinner.
00:05:23
Speaker
And it was like shocking, shocking. Like just one of those things were like, No. Like, are you, are you like, you feel like you stole something, you know, you're like, this is unbelievable. What a blessing by the way.
00:05:36
Speaker
So one of those truckers, I believe obviously like he paid for us, um, just somebody who probably observed us. I don't know what it was. Um, maybe that we prayed maybe just cause he missed his family. I don't know, but he paid for our meal and it had to be over a hundred dollars.
00:05:52
Speaker
Um, And like it blew us away. Like it was just like, we don't want to forget this. um We want to be able to bless other people. And so here's my challenge to you as a listener is go pay for somebody's meal. No,
00:06:08
Speaker
Don't even need to tell him. And you don't even need to be in the in the restaurant because he was obviously gone by the time we ate. But how much that like impacted me of like these small acts of
Challenge: Perform Acts of Kindness
00:06:20
Speaker
kindness. It's $100, let's say. But it was so...
00:06:22
Speaker
but it was so impactful to me of how much that can really change the trajectory on people's lives. And so when I think this whole time and of of the seasons or or where we're at, I just feel like a lot of people are tense.
00:06:38
Speaker
They're frustrated. They're probably penny to penny, paycheck to paycheck. And, and so the impact that you can have on other people, when you just pay for their meal or pay for their coffee or, or whatever, that really changes their trajectory, no matter what's going on in their day.
00:06:54
Speaker
Like it, they do feel cared for and loved. And so anyway, so that's what I wanted to say. All that words to say, like, go pay for somebody's meal and go impact other people. And so, we are going to challenge ourselves next time we go out to dinner is pick a family and then just pay for their meal.
Closing Thoughts on Caring
00:07:10
Speaker
So you've been listening on Commonwealth podcast.
00:07:13
Speaker
Hopefully it gives you a different perspective, but not only are you loved, you're cared for, you're valued, you're seen. And there's times that we can do that to other people. So today or this week, go pay for somebody's meal. Thanks for listening.
