The Value of Taking Risks
00:00:40
Speaker
Okay, today i felt like I wanted to talk about something that I feel like has been more refining in me and especially as I get older and the best teacher. you ready for this? The best teacher for me is taking risks.
00:00:56
Speaker
That's it. Stepping into the uncomfortable and doing something that is way above my pay grade or so in over my skis has been the biggest reward and the best teacher in my life.
00:01:10
Speaker
Now, I can go and tell millions of stories of this, millions, but there is something psychologically that happens when you take a risk. I don't know what they all are, and I haven't done any research on this, but who cares? All I know is it's been the best teacher in my life.
00:01:28
Speaker
and As I think about like climbing a Switzerland mountain or going on a hike with my buddies on Grand Canyon or starting a business or...
Learning from Personal Risk Experiences
00:01:37
Speaker
stepping into a real estate deal that we are doing for our business or hiring somebody or getting married or just think about all the risks that you have taken in your life. And to me, that gets me excited because you are learning and you're constantly taking this whole comfortableness and being like, we can do better.
00:01:54
Speaker
We can step out of that comfort. We can do something. We can take risks. That has been my greatest teacher. And even when I, i would say probably most,
00:02:06
Speaker
Yeah, maybe. It's when I fail. Take a risk and fail. I just feel like you learn so incredibly, um so much more when you fail than when you succeed. But the repetition of it, I think, is what I've been thinking through in my head is how do we continue to push more?
00:02:23
Speaker
I guess ourselves or me out of my comfort zone and start taking risks.
Calculated Risks and Faith
00:02:28
Speaker
Now they can be calculated. They can be like kamikaze kind of stuff. But what I was kind of saying is just for me, I like to take calculated risk and say, maybe everything hasn't been ironed out, but I think the benefits are going to outweigh the risks and taking this, this, I don't know, opportunity.
00:02:47
Speaker
so Okay. So I, and I also think that God, I guess maybe speaks to me in when I, when I push myself out of the comfort zone, because I know it's not of me doing it.
00:02:58
Speaker
I feel like when I ever step out of my comfort zone, I have to rely on the Lord to be able to one, give me wisdom or two help me, ah I don't know, out of something or help things go smoothly. But I know that it's not on my own accord that I'm doing it. So it's humility.
Reflecting on Recent Risks
00:03:17
Speaker
It's humbling to me to step out of my comfort zone.
00:03:20
Speaker
But it's also then i get, I think my, my ears just kind of perk up to be like, Lord, what are you trying to teach me in this? Even if it fails miserably, let's talk to like, like teach me what I need to be taught.
00:03:32
Speaker
So as you start looking at your life and you start thinking about things and and when's the last risk you took, that was my question I wanted to ask. When's the last risk you took? What was it? And what did you learn from that risk?
00:03:45
Speaker
or challenge or opportunity, but I'm talking about things that you've totally pushed yourself in order to do, not just like something that came up and like, oh, that was an obstacle, that was a challenge, but something that you've, you had to make a conscious effort in order to step out and do something. So um but I'm challenging. I would say that that's kind of been my m MO is to continue to try to push myself into kind of I don't risky behavior is probably the appropriate words, but to try to,
00:04:16
Speaker
just being over my skis and see where the Lord takes me. Um, and, and, and push myself out into those, those times where I feel like I'm okay. I'm living. I'm in over my head. I'm uncharted territory.
00:04:29
Speaker
Lord, I need you here. i just am, you know, I don't know what to do. i just feel like I just learned the most. so if you haven't If you don't know the last time you took a risk, start planning that. Maybe it's like, hey, I want a half marathon. Okay, that's kind of a risk. It's kind of not, but it's something uncharted.
00:04:47
Speaker
Or, hey, I want to climb a mountain. Or I want to do this. Or I want to start a business. Or I want to ask for the promotion. Or I want to... I want to do a better job dating my wife and I want to start pursuing these things that are going to be uncharted territory. or I want to be more communicative with my feelings or what's really going on or whatever it is. Like we all have our own threshold of of risk and scariness, but when's the last time you really just looked at fear and and and like the eyes and say, okay, we're going to step into
Facing Challenges Head-On
00:05:17
Speaker
Okay, last story I'll say is, and we've talked about this before, but ah buffaloes, whenever there's a storm, they walk towards the storm. They don't walk away from the storm because they know if they walk towards the storm, they're going to get out of the storm quicker.
00:05:31
Speaker
Versus if you start walking away from the storm, you're actually in the storm longer. So what is that hard conversation that you need to have? What is that? challenge you need to put in front of you.
Story of Perseverance: Ryan Garvey's 100-Mile Run
00:05:42
Speaker
i have a good buddy, and I think a lot of you know, Ryan Garvey, he's going to try to run 100 miles, like an ultra marathon. like That makes me want to barf in my mouth. But it's his it's his deal. He knows to have to rely on the Lord, and he knows he's going to have to challenge himself and get up and start training, ah because you just can't wake up in the morning and just...
00:06:01
Speaker
step into a hundred mile race. So I don't know if that helps you or encourages you, but I hope it does because I want to be surrounding myself with people who are constantly challenging themselves, not to stay with the status quo, but be uncommon and start pushing themselves no matter what that is. um And then I also want to be around people that will communicate with that. of Hey, what's, what am I learning? How's this make me feel? Or like had this flop miserably.
Conclusion: Embracing Risk
00:06:26
Speaker
And what are you going to do to overcome that?
00:06:29
Speaker
