Introduction to Halo Month

00:00:05
Speaker
Welcome to Chad Tsunami. Hello everybody and welcome back to another episode of Chad Tsunami. I'm Sad Tsunami and joining me for another episode of Halo Month is my very good friend and Spartan in Arms, Adam
00:00:32
Speaker
Adam, welcome back. Hello, hello. It's good to be back here. I'm looking forward to what could potentially be a one-way trip into our topic today. I anticipate that I might get lost in all the tangled webs that surround this issue. Wear it so easy, Adam. Wear it so easy.

Exploring Halo's Expansive Lore

00:00:49
Speaker
So yeah, this is our second episode of Halo Month. I am absolutely hyped to have an excuse just to rant about Halo. So this entire episode is just going to be me talking about basically everything wrong with Halo. Yeah, Adam's just going to sit here silently and it's just going to be a one-man show. Nah, I'm all the kidding. I'm all the kidding.
00:01:09
Speaker
I wouldn't leave you out the co-op. I'm not three-four-three. I wouldn't leave you out. So, yeah, speaking of ranting about the lore. Ah, halo lore. What an entity. It is quite the mass now. That is the very inflated by the literal books. How many books are there? There's like over 20. I don't even want to track and comprehend.
00:01:31
Speaker
I mean, ever since the very humble beginnings of Halo Combat Evolved, we have had books, TV shows, granted, I think at the time of recording there's only really been two, with the third proper one on its way to SNHB01, or
00:01:48
Speaker
I think you're right yeah sorry I'm just so used to like these things being announced and then it's like HBO exclusive it's like but I'm British I don't have HBO yeah it is pretty much everywhere it's in Mega Blocks obviously it's got the games it's got the spin-off games it's got the games that give Adam a migraine you know it is a pretty meaty franchise I just remembered that part of the lore what the meaty oh the ST gave me a blinding headache
00:02:18
Speaker
That's, like, ingrained into the lore now. Let's face it, you can't have an ODST discussion without talking about the migraines that they... Now your head seems like it's gonna explode. Well, you're not wrong. And of course, that extends to anime as well, which is, like, one of the topics we will be talking about this month. Again, cannot wait. But yeah, what is your take on, like, the lore of Halo? Because it's quite a contentious issue. Not gonna lie.
00:02:44
Speaker
As somebody who is very much not au fait with the halo lore, I will stress here, it seems rather impenetrable. I must be honest, it seems like a tangled mess and I don't really quite know where to start with it and I'm also not quite sure I want to.
00:03:01
Speaker
like delve into it honestly. Personally for me it's a sign of a good game when you get invested not only in the story but the lore as well.

Understanding Halo Lore: A Personal Experience

00:03:11
Speaker
I remember playing I think it was Skyrim years ago and being so like you know enraptured with the world and I would start to like read up on it and be like
00:03:21
Speaker
Oh, so this is why this is happening, or oh, this happened in the blurring or whatever. Really invested. Halo, I almost felt as if I had to read the lore to understand what the hell was going on.
00:03:35
Speaker
As I've said in previous Halo episodes, my very first game was Halo 3, so I was dropped in the absolute deep end. To quote a famous philosopher, Breaking Benjamin, it did indeed blow me away, but at the same time there is a lot to get through. There's books, there's movies, there's books, there's games, there's books. Did I mention the books?
00:03:58
Speaker
and of course the Halo 5 graph which will forever be burned into my memory. Because it seems as if now there's kind of like a... there's like a split, isn't there? You know, there's like the kind of covenant war and now there's like the whole forerunner saga? Yeah.
00:04:15
Speaker
which it almost feels as if Halo has this problem of they always try to lean on the lore to make the games but you wouldn't understand what's going on in the games unless you read the lore.

Comparing Halo Lore with Other Franchises

00:04:26
Speaker
It's a bit like what the old Star Wars films did. I feel as if there's a lot of similarities you could pull between the two. Is there any other franchise you feel as if it's done the same thing?
00:04:37
Speaker
I don't know, actually. I mean, did you say Star Wars there? Did you? He did say Star Wars. Yeah. That's the only one that I can think. I mean, I'm sure there are, I'm sure there are plenty of others. I was going to say Lord of the Rings, but I feel like Tolkien kind of created all this lore, like at the start. So it's not really the same as Halo that kind of had this lore dump like halfway through, you know what I mean? So yeah, I'm sure there's some others out there, but outside of Star Wars, I can't really think of another one.
00:05:04
Speaker
probably the most egregious example would be Halo 5. But would you say that's the worst game in terms of the lower dunks and things like that? In that aspect I think it is the worst. For me with the Halo lore thing, I'm kind of
00:05:22
Speaker
numb to it and I've kind of like accepted that I'm not really gonna understand what's happening in these things you know and like I just it just kind of I just kind of let it go over my head and I'm sort of okay with it I kind of got numb to it in the other five in that way I was just like yep here's Laura don't care let me shoot something
00:05:38
Speaker
It was more when they brought up Blue Team, which like one quick Google search later, I was told that Blue Team were master chiefs like BFFs wherever and Spartan training and you know, oh, it was amazing.

Gameplay vs. Lore: Halo 5 Experience

00:05:51
Speaker
This is the first game together. I did not see if you picked this game up.
00:05:55
Speaker
you know, you weren't a Halo fan, you would not be able to understand that. Again, it feels as if it's like a huge problem of the franchise. Would you say Halo as well has a problem for being wacky with the lore, or do you think it's quite grounded for the world it's built up?
00:06:12
Speaker
I don't feel I know enough to say either way. I'll sit on the fence and say a little bit of both. I kind of think there's some stuff that does seem quite grounded and does seem quite believable for the world, but there are some other things. Like someone's after the forerunners. Maybe since I don't understand it as well, it did seem a little bit like
00:06:32
Speaker
Wait, what's going on here now? So it did seem a little bit more towards the wacky end, but again, I don't know enough. I feel like I don't want to like have a blanket statement since I really am not au fait at all. I'm not stressed. I don't want to like come down and be like, this is all terrible. And like, you know, people, if I actually looked into it, there'd probably be some good stuff. But yeah, so I'll sit uncomfortably on the fence.
00:06:53
Speaker
Before I played Halo Infinite, which of course is the topic we talked about last week, I had to watch videos on Halo 5 just to remind myself what had happened and what happened in between Halo Infinite and Halo 5. Oh my god, there was just so much there. I actually learned a lot of weird things, like the Banished apparently have human people who work with
00:07:14
Speaker
them and I also learned like not really so much for a real infinite but like the oh what do you call them you're the prophets yeah like they had their own world and everything and it blew up and they found like full runner technology and you know just
00:07:29
Speaker
really weird thing. Interesting, I have to admit, if you're into the lore of the game, but things that obviously are never touched on at all in the games, unless you collect the audio logs, the terminals, that kind of thing. And I feel as if Halo lore almost feels like homework.
00:07:48
Speaker
I mean, you can still sit down and enjoy a Halo game. Like, if you played Halo Infinite, you would think, okay, Banished are the bad guys, or do you play Halo 3? Okay, the Banished, sorry, the Covenant are the bad guys. It's just like, you know, you have to get from point A to point B. So if you want to actually understand everything, yeah, good luck with that, kids. Yeah, I'm not, like, getting, like, 20 copies of Contact Harvest to send out. But if you listen, please find out how you can get Namogans. We're not doing giveaways, are we?

Halo Lore Trivia Game Begins

00:08:16
Speaker
Not yet.
00:08:16
Speaker
Not yet. Maybe we'll pick in next year. Maybe we'll do that. Unless someone from 343 is listening to this, in which case 343 please give us a call. We've all indeed said that the lore's amazing. So you might be wondering to all those lovely listeners at home, you might be wondering why are we talking about the Halo lore? Is this going to be an episode about the Halo lore? Yes and no. I proposed an idea to Adam, and he graciously accepted my offer. Thank God. Thank you so much. He says his tears roll down his eyes.
00:08:45
Speaker
I really should have thought about it more. Basically today we are going to be playing a little bit of a Halo lore game. Try saying that three times.
00:08:57
Speaker
Yeah today I am going to be proposing seven facts to Adam and they're all going to be like throughout the history of Yale from its humble beginnings with Bungie to its tenure with 343 industries. I'm going to read them out seven facts because of course seven is Bundy's favorite number.
00:09:15
Speaker
and he is going to have to guess whether the facts I'm telling him are true or false. And I am so excited because I was listening to what you said when you said, I'm not a halo lore aficionado, you know? And I was like, although that was quite funny. On a side note, like a couple of years ago when I... it was us that played Halo Reach two years ago, wasn't it? Yeah, it was, yeah. Oh my goodness, we're just a time to lie. And of course, even our friend to great friends and lore masterised banks managed to pick up on the lore.
00:09:46
Speaker
I feel as if we just defer to him now for any lower base question.
00:09:51
Speaker
No, we love him really. So yeah, I'm going to read out these seven facts and yeah, Adam has to put on his best deerstalker hat and work out whether they are true or false. Adam, are you ready? Not really, but let's all listen to me get zero out of seven of these right. Well, you might get it right. You might get one of them. I might stumble onto the right answer here.
00:10:16
Speaker
And yep, just before we fire up this halo array of trivia, we will be right back just after these messages. 00:11:29
Speaker
And we are back. Yeah, I am loving out my childhood dream as a game show host. Adam, are you ready?
00:11:40
Speaker
I've got my tuxedo on and everything. I've got the Bradley Walsh look going on. I just realised as I said that to all the non-UK listeners out there, they'll have no idea who I'm talking about. You know, an international figure? It's Bradley Walsh, an international figure. I actually don't know. I'm going to say no.
00:12:00
Speaker
He did do shows in America so maybe? Did he actually? Yeah he did well I think it was well not shows but he did like a show where he took his son. Did he go on a holiday? Basically that was it he called it Breaking Dad and I think he just built a show around the pun and he just went on. He's like hey do you want a free trip to free holiday to America son right?
00:12:22
Speaker
Anyway, this episode isn't about Bradley Walsh. Okay, fact one. Bradley Walsh is... nah, I'm not kidding. I might do better to be able to tell them Bradley Walsh. You're less tangled. Well, this is true. His lore is rather like more linear and straightforward. I do agree. 343, if you're listening, get Bradley Walsh into a hero infinite. Let's face it, that's what the fans want. Get a multiplayer skin of Bradley Walsh.
00:12:49
Speaker
I would pay for that. I would rather pay for that in the cat ears, mind you. But let's move on before we give them any ideas. Fact 1. This is probably gonna be an easier one. I hope so anyway. We all know Halo nowadays is one of the titans of FPS games. But initially, it was developed to be an RTS game for the Mac. True or false? Now I know that Halo originally was going to be a Mac game.
00:13:14
Speaker
So I know that bit is true, but was it going to be an RTS? I'm leaning towards... I'll go through my thought process here. I'm leaning towards saying this is false, because I have heard a little bit about, like, the kind of creation of Halo, and I don't ever recall hearing it going to be about... about it supposed to be an RTS game. I think it was originally maybe meant to be a third-person shooter,
00:13:38
Speaker
I want to say develop for the Mac before, before Bungie became acquired by Microsoft. So that's where I'm leaning towards, but I'm just trying to take your time. There's no rush.
00:13:50
Speaker
Obviously, we've had two Halo Wars games now, which are RTS. No, I don't. I only played a little bit of the original Halo Wars, but I remember when Halo Wars was coming out, and I don't ever recall. It feels like if Halo was originally going to be an RTS, that fact might have been, like, bigged up, or might have been discussed. Now, maybe it was, and I just completely missed it.
00:14:11
Speaker
but I don't recall hearing that fact. So I'm going to say this is false. Is that your final answer? That's my final answer. Oh I'm afraid it's true. Really? Oh no, really? Well you are, you were half right because you're right it was supposed to come out from the Mac and you're right it was developed as a third-person shooter before it became a first-person shooter but it was originally supposed to be an RTS game. Oh there you go. Supposedly.
00:14:39
Speaker
which I'm assuming that's what the inspiration behind Halo Wars was. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Maybe that was something that was mentioned. I just don't ever recall hearing that being a fact at the time ever, but there you go. I'm off to a good start.
00:14:54
Speaker
One down, six to go. I thought I had such well-reasoned logic as well. This is going to be a long episode. A long episode of failure. No, don't say that. You'll get one right chap. Are you ready for the next one? Let's go for it. Okay. Number two in ODST.

Surprising Halo Trivia Revelations

00:15:09
Speaker
your favourite game. You fight alongside three other ODST soldiers, Buck, Romeo and Dutch. In Halo 5, it's revealed that Buck became a Spartan IV. In the books as well, it's revealed that Dutch and Romeo also became Spartan IVs. Now is this true or is it false?
00:15:29
Speaker
I know Buck became a Spartan 4, because I remember him in Halo 5, because he's voiced by Nathan Fillion. And looks like him. And looks like him, exactly. It is, basically, Nathan Fillion. So I think he was voiced by Nathan Fillion in ODST, wasn't he, as well? Yeah, because he looks like PS1 hybrid Nathan Fillion in Halo ODST.
00:15:48
Speaker
Good point, good point. So I know that's true. So it's whether Dutch and Rome, I feel like this is true. I feel like this is true purely because I know obviously I know that one of those three became a Spartan. So it kind of makes sense that you'd be like, okay, these are other, these are two other like sort of high profile UNSC soldiers, you know, and they were ODST already, which is like the elite of probably the next level below the Spartans, if I'm right in saying, as your kind of elite military force.
00:16:15
Speaker
So it makes sense that ODST soldiers would become, would be good candidates to become Spartan force. And since they are both, since all three of them are kind of high profile and, you know, made a name for themselves during the Covenant invasion of New Mombasa, it feels like that would be a true statement. Hmm, I'm trying to see if there's any way that I think this might... I mean, I guess the other alternative is that these two characters, Dutch and Romeo, never showed up again.
00:16:39
Speaker
in any of the lore. But to me that feels like that wouldn't be the case. I feel like there's so much the halo lore that these characters are definitely bound to be in something. And you said, did you say it was in the books you're saying in this? Yes, because as far as I know, they haven't appeared in the game since with the exception of Buck. So it's in the books that you're saying that they may have become, whether it's true or false, Spartan
00:17:01
Speaker
You know what, I'm gonna go with my gut here, I think this is true. Is that your final answer? Yep. You sure? Yes. Positive? Yes. Positive, I'm sure. Not really now, but I'll stick with it. It is true.
00:17:14
Speaker
So, fun fact, apparently I... Oh god, I can't remember the time frame, but from what I read, I think it was either between 4 and 5, or I want to say it was 5 and 6. Buck is sent to try and find Romeo, and Dutch Romeo, I think, I could be wrong, but I think it's Romeo that's locked up in a prison for some reason. I've got no idea why. And Dutch is like married to someone, and they're both Spartan followers, and
00:17:42
Speaker
I'm not gonna lie, I genuinely do not like that twist. Do you know what happens to the rookie, the character you play in ODST? Does he, I mean, well he survives the game, from what I recall, but does he die in the events afterwards? Yep, apparently they go to stop an insurrection and yeah, he gets shot in the head by the leader. Well, what a fitting end.
00:18:02
Speaker
yeah pretty much is like oh great yeah this character that you played as throughout the whole game and yeah you get shot well he was always better at first and skulking around the night streets of numabasa than probably getting into the thick of the action well this is true and speaking of the thick of the action are you ready for number three let's do it i've got some confidence now okay this will be your downfall
00:18:24
Speaker
That's the spirit. Nice. Okay, so number three. In a news report discussing Amnesty International's criticism of the UN, the BBC accidentally used the UNSC logo from Halo instead

Trivia Recap and Future Teasers

00:18:39
Speaker
of the United Nations Security Council logo. Hmm.
00:18:44
Speaker
Now, is this one true or false? Can I look up on my computer the two logos to see what they look like? Just not like actually look for the story, but can I just have a look to see what the two logos look like? In fact, do you want me to send it to you? OK, yeah, you can send you send it to me then. Is that allowed so I can see if whether I think it's plausible?
00:19:03
Speaker
Yep, no problem. But what's your thought as I do that? What's your thought process behind this? You know, I was leaning towards false, but now that I think about it, I can recall several instances of like these kind of screw ups. Like I remember at one, a gymnastics event, rather than the Kazakhstan national anthem being played, the one from Borat was played. I've also seen the BBC put a man on a live interview who came into interview for a janitor position and they got confused and they ended up talking about like international music rights, I think.
00:19:33
Speaker
So these things do happen. Yeah, that is pretty common. I'm not a common. It doesn't happen. So I'm leaning, I am, you know what? I'm still leaning towards false. Oh, that, you know what? Seeing, thinking about it now, because it's the Security Council, I can see that is these initials.
00:19:54
Speaker
this does feel like something that potentially perhaps could have like could have happened by mistake or perhaps somebody perhaps this was like a intentional rib by somebody i guess maybe if they just typed in like oh perhaps if somebody just quickly typed in like the initials like unsc but security council that might have come up
00:20:10
Speaker
I don't ever recall hearing about this, but then I didn't hear about Halo originally being an RTS, so I don't know how much I can trust my judgement for what I've heard, because perhaps I'm just so far out of the loop.
00:20:29
Speaker
so I'm gonna say true. You're gonna go for true. I'm gonna go for true. They don't look similar in a way but I could totally see if they typed in those initials it could happen. So you're gonna go for true then. I'm going for true. And just to explain to the listeners at home I sent the two like logos side by side to add them there so that's probably informed your decision I want to say. I'm saying the initials it has. So I'm sending you a picture right now
00:20:56
Speaker
and it is true. Apparently in 2012 I think Amnesty International were talking about the UN role and I think it was Syria. I could be wrong but I think it was Syria and yeah fun fact they got the logos completely mixed up. That's amazing. I know I've never seen that thinking oh god this is amazing.
00:21:20
Speaker
This is absolutely great. I love it. Oh, now that you've got two out of three, are you ready for the next one? My confidence is just growing now. We're gonna get six now. I believe it. It's gonna happen. Okay, I won a preface for this next one. There was an alternate fact that I was gonna use, but I couldn't find the source for it. I had to change a couple of facts in this list.
00:21:44
Speaker
So, okay, number four, which is a little bit on the more silly side after, you know, rubbing on the BBC as, you know, timeless classic. Number four. In the games, grunts are notorious for breathing methane. During the handover of Halo from Bungie to 343 Industries, there was an April Fools comic created where a Spartan had to rescue a group of Marines from having their gases harvested by a rogue group of grunts.
00:22:13
Speaker
I'm gonna let you fill in the gaps of what gas is on you. So you were saying this was a joke comic? Yeah, like an April Fools one. I'm leaning towards this being false, but like, the more I think about it, this is exactly the kind of thing that somebody would do.
00:22:30
Speaker
The more I think about it as an April Fool's thing. So this was during, you're saying this is during the handover to 343. Yeah, between Bungie ending the series and 343 you've taken it on. Yeah, the kind of like in-between period. I also didn't know that grunts were breathing in methane, so that's interesting to know. I've learned something today. Yep.
00:22:50
Speaker
I suppose they do have that briefing apparatus on, makes sense. Is that what they explode them when you shoot them sometimes? Yeah, supposedly. Fun times. So the last three have been true. They've all been true facts. Is this going to be the swerve for all these facts are true? This is what I'm wondering now. You're looking at the wackiest facts that are all going to be true. You're just going to have to find out. I know I'm going to have to find out now. This definitely feels like the kind of humor that somebody would go for. I could totally see this being a thing. Do you say it was Master Chief had to rescue them? No, just the Spartan.
00:23:19
Speaker
just ace sparring that too. Because obviously Master Chief would have been on that ship. He's got more important things to do. He's got four runners to fight against. You know what? I admire the fact that if somebody did write this, they did it in the canon that of course Master Chief couldn't be there to save them. This is a joke thing. I would definitely have written it being Master Chief in there. Weirdly, that's the fact that's making me think this is false, clearly because I think it would be Master Chief, not just ace Spartan.
00:23:48
Speaker
You know what? This is probably going to end up being true, but I don't know. I'm going to go false on this one. I've just got a feeling about it. Kind of makes me think that they probably had you in the hand of more important things. And I can, as much as I could see this being somebody's like, humor, you know, being a thing like to make an actual like, you said it was a web comic, did you say? Or? Yeah, just a comic. Yeah. Like a comic. I don't know. I mean, like as much as this might be, I don't know. I kind of almost want to believe that there was more gravity, like if they're going to make something
00:24:17
Speaker
It was more like, more like dignified. This is probably where I'm going to go wrong because I'm trusting in the better part of human nature. But I'm going to say false here because I just, I've just got a feeling about this one. I just don't, I don't think it, I said, I hope there's more dignity in the ceremony. And also I just feel like the comic would have been Master Chief, not Ice Bar. I'm saying false. False. Are you sure? Yes, I'm going to go with it.
00:24:43
Speaker
And yeah, you're wrong. Oh, it was true. No, I'm only kidding. Yes, I had a feeling about this one. The kind of inspiration, do you want to hear the inspiration behind this? I am very intrigued now. So I don't know if it's one of the skulls that you can collect in Halo, you know, that unlocks the additional dialogue. Oh yeah.
00:25:04
Speaker
with something you can come across. But apparently, if you look in the propaganda towers in Halo Infinite, you can hear the grunt talking about methane expulsion from humans, and then he's like, oh, don't ask how I know that, to which I can't remember if it was you or someone else that I went in a massive rant being like, imagine being the banished, being the ones to destroy the UNSC, and they literally employ Fartsniffers.
00:25:32
Speaker
to bolster the ranks. I was like, are you serious? Do you want to know the other fact that I was actually going to use instead but I couldn't find a credible source? What was it? Well apparently someone brought this up of course on Reddit saying, oh if they breathe methane does that mean the obvious? Which honestly my web results must look fucking...
00:25:52
Speaker
Honestly, it's like the more I read into this, the more I just hate. I just want to cry. But apparently, in Contact Harvest, someone was like, apparently there's a scene where an engineer and a grunt, like they run away in an escape pod, and for the grunt to survive, the engineer has to farm.
00:26:14
Speaker
or something to create a habitable environment. I have no idea if that's true, and there is no backup. People say, oh it's just like a minor part of the book, but it's like, if I came across that in a Halo book, I don't think I would play any of the games again. I would just call it a day and be like, no, no, I'm done, 343, I'm done, you know, just keep your 40 franchise.
00:26:39
Speaker
Moving on. You don't get a choice on the sixth one. Moving on. Okay, number five. Now we're getting into the nasty, nasty ones. You may be familiar with this song called Turn Down For What? Are you familiar with that song?
00:26:53
Speaker
I have heard of it. I have heard of it. Yes, of course, the famous philosophical lyrics of turn down for what? Turn down for what? I hope I pronounced that right. So yes, turned down for what? Which was released in 2013, which apparently I learned that and I thought, oh wow, didn't realise it was that late. Anyway, that's not the question. But there were plans for 343 to release a tie-in song called Turn Down for War.
00:27:23
Speaker
to promote Halo 5. This, I think this could be true because this seems like the kind of like marketing thing that somebody would like suggest. I'm sure this has been done before with other games. Me saying that now I can't think of a single example but I'm sure it has been done. Like they certainly have used like musical artists to promote games and everything. For a while Call of Duty was very like tied in with Eminem and Snoop Dogg obviously as well. You know this does, so turn down for Warped. So I guess like the kind of Warthog
00:27:51
Speaker
Well, no more for, you know, the elites and, like, Halo, one of their, like, not catch raises, but you know how they always turn around and go, word, word, word. Like, they used to say that a lot in, like, Halo 3, I think. I don't know if they still say it. I think they do, but yeah. So instead of turn down for what it was turned down for, word, like,
00:28:12
Speaker
the elites saying that. Yeah so this would almost be like a kind of like throwback sort of thing. Yeah. So this was a tie-in for Halo 4 did you say? Halo 5. Halo 5. Okay so this would be two years later. Would this song still have had resonance two years later?
00:28:27
Speaker
Well, this song came out, I think, in December of 2013, so it was quite late. 2014 is probably when it picked up Steam. Okay, so then it would only be a year, so that makes more sense. I do think this is probably true. It just seems like, if you're telling me that now, with it being like it was 2014 that the song was getting popularity, I can totally see a year later.
00:28:48
Speaker
like 343 like trying to cash in on its popularity. I can totally see it being like a marketing ploy thing like people marketing strategies being like this is this will get the kids in this will get eyeballs on the product I don't recall this maybe that's something I should think about I don't recall but again I was very checked out from Halo at this point so I really wasn't I don't think I was I wasn't even gonna get Halo 5 I got it as a Christmas present from my mom like the end of the year so like I really was not paying attention to anything about the game to be honest so I don't have any kind of this wealth could have happened and I just hadn't
00:29:18
Speaker
no knowledge of it. I think this is true. I think this is a true fight. I can just see this being something that somebody pitched and then a group of executives being like, yes, let's do it. I think it was a year later, if it was two years later, I would be like, maybe that's too far. But I think a year later is enough time for them to still be like, this will get eyeballs on the product. So I'm going to say true.
00:29:40
Speaker
true final answer yeah final answer and unfortunately it's wrong but you know what i am actually surprised there wasn't an official version there is like parody there is parody songs of this and um youtube and things like that but yeah it was never done by 343 but 343 if you need a marketing guy i'm right here
00:30:04
Speaker
It's only what now, like seven, seven years later? Eight years later now, people will still be... A year and nine. Remember it's 2022? I don't know, I was thinking 2014 now, it was a game popularity. Oh of course, yeah yeah, good point. I can math, kind of. I can math. I'm just saying, because even I forgot it was 2022, like oh my god. It seems like a missed opportunity. It really does, what a shame. But then again, so was the fart and grunt comic.
00:30:32
Speaker
Either way, what could have been so you're not too bad. I think so far I got questions two three and four, right? I think one more I can get a passing grade three out of five so far So not right. My confidence is a little bit dented, but I'm still feeling I'm still feeling like I can I can close this out strong
00:30:51
Speaker
To be fair, that was like a curveball one. That was a hard one. I would just struggle with that. Okay, number six. The voice actress for Cortana also voices Princess Peach in the Super Mario series. Oh, I don't think that's true. So the voice, is it Jennifer Hale? I might be wrong in saying that now. Or is it Jen Taylor, I think, sorry, isn't the name? Jen Taylor. I know that she has done other voices. I can think of some of her voices that she
00:31:21
Speaker
So sorry, when I say Cortana, yes, I do mean Gentiller. I don't think this is true.
00:31:27
Speaker
because I'm trying to think now. So you're saying like in the Super Mario games, you're not saying like one particular Super Mario game, you're just saying like in the series as a whole. Yes. I mean, there may be a slight similarity there, but I just don't think... I've not heard this and I feel like this is a fact I probably would have heard. If this is true and I haven't heard it, then this really speaks to my ignorance, which is a high potential. I have a high possibility. My ignorance is not to be underestimated.
00:31:53
Speaker
I don't know, I just don't think this is true. I feel like, again, I would have heard something about this. As much as I can see a little bit of similarity in the two, I don't think I can hear enough. Now, maybe perhaps Jen Taylor is a far more versatile voice actress than I'm given her credit for, but I have heard her do other voices and they
00:32:12
Speaker
kind of have that hint of Cortana in there. I think Cortana voice is probably her regular voice. So they kind of have that hint in there. So I'm going to say false because I don't have, I've not heard anything about this and I can't see enough similarities to make me believe this is true. So I'm going false. That's my final answer. That's my final answer. It is actually true. Really? I did not know this. No way. There is a similar, I should have, there is a similarity. I just, well, there you go. That does speak to my ignorance.
00:32:44
Speaker
She was also Zoe in Left 4 Dead 2. There you go. Well Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, but you know what I mean. I really thought I would have heard. I really thought I would have heard something about that, but there you go, as I said. I must admit, I never even knew that. I remember hearing that Mario's voice actor is the same guy who plays Parthenax in Skyrim. Really? Yeah.
00:33:08
Speaker
Yeah, no, no, legitimately. The guy who plays Super Mario, THE Mario, not Chris Pratt. That voice actor also plays Parthenax, who is the huge dragon. There you go. I say THE huge dragon, there's a couple of dragons, but you know, like, the one who helps you, they're both the same voice actor, and I was like, hot damn. There you go. I have met that guy as well, and he does not sound like a big dragon. He's really got to do the Parthenax voice, you'd still be there, talking to him. Oh, I know. I imagine.
00:33:34
Speaker
OK, so we are, I think, three out of six now? Yeah, I've got to get this last one or else I'm going to flunk this test. Oh no, my confidence has evaporated now fully. I'm back to where I was at the beginning of this quest. Are you going to go to the prom? I don't know, I might just hide away. I'm in shame. I can't win prom, Queen, but maybe I can still nab Miss Congeniality, so we'll see. You'll always be Miss Congeniality on this show.
00:33:58
Speaker
And on that note, number seven. Are you ready? Let's do it. Was that you taking a victory sip? No, that was me taking a nervous like down the last of my cider to get the Dutch courage for this. Ah yes, the Dutch, the Romeo and the Buck courage.
00:34:13
Speaker
That is by far one of the worst jokes I've ever made in this podcast, I apologise. Number 7, our final one of the day. Just before I say it, I hope all you listeners out there have been playing along with us. If you've got 6 out of 6 so far, please feel free to let us know, make Adam feel bad.
00:34:34
Speaker
Yeah, rub it in like butter. Anyway, so number seven. We all know about the enemy known as the Flood, but initially they were never supposed to be in the game. Instead, you were supposed to fight an evil forerunner which was later adopted by 343 who became the Diadact. Hmm.
00:34:56
Speaker
I haven't heard anything about this, so I'm going to have to use my best deduction here. I can see this being true, because yeah, because obviously I know like we obviously don't meet any Forerunners until Halo 4. Well, in the games, I mean, unless I'm forgetting one, but the Forerunners are mentioned from what I recall in the first Halo, so it does seem like they would have been there. It seems plausible that could have been, you know, if this was designed as a prison.
00:35:23
Speaker
could have been holding him potentially, like a kind of almost like a equivalent of like the Phantom Zone with like General Zod, just to bring more nerdiness into this. Of course, let's not. So I want to lean towards this being true, because I'm trying to think
00:35:38
Speaker
I can see the Flood potentially being a replacement thing. Perhaps they just couldn't figure a way out to do the Forerunner, to design him, or to make it work. Perhaps they thought it might be better to bring in a new enemy faction. So you're saying that rather than the Flood being there, it was going to be this Forerunner who became the Diadact.
00:36:00
Speaker
So it wasn't necessarily the diadact in that game, but it was like what 343 kind of like took an idea from for the diadact to become a thing in Halo 4. This does ring true to me. This really does ring true because I could see this and it would make sense I think for like 343 to build on something because the same thing with the brutes. The brutes were I think originally
00:36:23
Speaker
supposed to
00:36:53
Speaker
for whatever reason. I'm going to say true on this one. It just seems plausible and it has a ring of truth to it. Now again, I have no like, there's nothing I can even like really, I've not heard anything about this at all. Like I don't have any knowledge, even like anything that I'm like, I've heard this kind of tangential fact. So this is pure like guesswork on my part here, but it just trying to piece it together, it feels true to me. So, you know, I'm going to say I'm going to go final answer.
00:37:22
Speaker
True. The prophet of truth, do you say? You did. Call me that, call me that. I'm sorry to break your hopes and dreams, but it's false. But as far as I know anyway, as far as I know the flood were always supposed to be there. Do you actually want to know the fact I was going to use instead? Let's go for it.
00:37:42
Speaker
So do you know how in the early tech demo and the trailer that they brought out for Halo and Master Chief has quite a robotic voice almost? Initially I thought they were going to make Master Chief into a robot. I thought that was the rumour that went around, but I couldn't find anything that backed up that statement because it was more articles of people saying, is Master Chief a robot? No, he's not. It's like, yes, I know that, but did they think he was going to be a robot at that time? I couldn't get sources for that. So
00:38:12
Speaker
Yeah, and unfortunately you've left with that. Highly plausible, yeah. As far as I know, because I don't think there were any forerunners land in any of the Bungie games. Fair enough, like, yes, but I suppose, yeah, because there's none that show up unless I'm honestly just forgetting something. It is all just like, not living in this forerunner world, but like, you know, it's like, their remnants are left behind.
00:38:35
Speaker
Yeah, fair enough. I convinced myself and I talked myself into that too much. I should have been more critical and thought about it. I suppose it makes more sense for it always to have been like a separate faction rather than perhaps like one person, but I kind of maybe I kind of thought like they'd be like the one person and perhaps they'd have like an army or something. But yeah, I talked myself into that one foolishly.
00:38:54
Speaker
I mean, to be fair, that is still a logical deduction though, because it could very well have been possible. See if I'm completely incorrect in this and there's one halo fan out here cursing my name. Legitimately please let us know if there was a plan.
00:39:12
Speaker
But no, you actually did not too bad. Three out of seven has nothing to scoff at in the world of Halo War. Do you know what? I'm actually, as much as I'm disappointed, I got a fail. I didn't get a passing grade. I actually am impressed. I got three. I got three right. I actually generally thought I was going to get like zero, to be honest. So the fact that I got three, I will take it and I will take it. And, you know, I had a good run in the middle there, but it all fell apart at the end. You know, maybe like a Halo plot.
00:39:38
Speaker
Well, you got the ODST one, you got the Amnesty International one, and you got the Fart and Grunts one. I mean, what more can I, the trifecta, what more can I...
00:39:49
Speaker
You know, I have to admit, your logic for that one, the grunt one, was just incredible. You were like, oh, I don't think M3 or 3 would have done that. You'd have more pressing things to do. And I was like, shit, you're right. And again, I know I'm being a bit nerdy going back to one of our episodes, but you know, like, when we were watching Death Note together, it was like that. Like, I'd planned it out perfectly. And you were just like, oh, just one more deduction. Or rather, more like Columbo.
00:40:17
Speaker
And she's like, one more thing! And I'm like, oh shit. Yeah, so next week we're going to be talking about, eh, Colombo facts. No, definitely. Oh my god. Maybe one day. Maybe one day. Maybe one day. I didn't realise it went on for as long as it did, to be honest. Is it at all? Because I've never seen absolutely Colombo facts. I've always seen bits and pieces, but apparently it went as far as like 2003, I think, or 2000s. I know. You can certainly see age was not kind to them.
00:40:46
Speaker
It did feel a bit kind of like, um, yeah, the prohibition of, nah, jokes aside. Great, great show. How do we get from Bradley Walsh to Columbo? Be a halo, be the magic of halo lore. It links everything, it links all things. I mean, yeah. 343, if you've been listening, what we want is a Bradley Walsh skin and a Columbo AI. Look, all I'm saying is, like, it would be so much better if instead of, like, Atriox meeting Cortana, it was just Columbo, you know? That's all I'm saying.
00:41:17
Speaker
just like one more thing this ring okay he just blows it up and that would be it yeah 10 out of 10 anyway you can find my fan fiction at www.chatsufanfiction.com yeah i wish i wish i had the money to hire out that domain but anyway you're bargaining steve mcqueen and columbo fan fiction ah yes steve mcqueen and columbo steve mcqueen ex columbo a romance for the ages but why do i idolize people i cannot follow
00:41:44
Speaker
I might never know. It's your mate and your main fault. So yeah next week we're going to talk about why my fanfiction is very unrealistic. The lore of your fanfiction can't wait. And yeah next week hopefully we will be chatting about the Halo Legends anime. I have to admit I was gonna give you like trivia questions about the anime but I thought nah that's too unfair and you probably know them. I think spoilers as well.
00:42:09
Speaker
It would be. Oh, exactly. That is a good show. Have you genuinely had no experience with that show? No, none at all. I don't think I even knew it existed until you brought it up. It came out. That actually came out between, I want to say, Halo 3 and 4, or Reach and 4. Yes, 2010. There you go.
00:42:28
Speaker
So about a time of reach? Yeah, about reach time. And it has a 6.6 out of 10 on IMDB. Could be worse. Could be better, but could be worse. Could be worse. I mean, it could be Halo 5. If it doesn't give me a migraine, it'll be the... It'll have already done better than no DST. I hate to say it, but there are no DSTs in this show.
00:42:47
Speaker
I'll get the Paris item already then. Well, they're roadie STs, but they're roadie STs that are just like anime boys. I kid you not, have you ever seen a red-headed, like, anime boy ODST running around? I feel like I'm about to. Oh, fun fact, just before we finish up, apparently on the Halo Infinite store, there was like an item from the show that they sold on Halo Infinite. They sold like a teddy bear from Halo Legend. Legends never die, they just get added to the Halo store.
00:43:17
Speaker
then you'll live forever if you have your mother's credit card. And on that very depressing note, thank you all so, so much for listening. I hope you got full marks on that. If not, see me after class. Is there anything you want to say? I look forward to sitting next to those who didn't also get full marks and set aside to Principal Satsby's office. Yeah, I'll see you again next year for the retest. Oh man, I'm going to be stuck in this grade forever. You'll never go to the prom. Too much more.
00:43:44
Speaker
It's too much. See, this is your problem. You should have copied office banks. No, I should have. I know. Damn it. Damn my honourable nature. And my belief that people wouldn't write webcomics about 14 grunts. I'm sorry, no humans. Yeah, whatever. Yeah, yeah. On that note, stay safe, stay awesome. Don't look up those facts and stay hydrated. I love God.
