Today is Forecast Friday and we are looking ahead. We are looking ahead to the weekend's game as Fulham travel to Southwest Park to take on Oliver Glazner's Crystal Palace.

Reflecting on Fulham's Recent Derby Victory

00:00:27
Speaker
My name is Gavin Ruffell and before we talk about Crystal Palace, before we talk about this fixture specifically,
00:00:34
Speaker
Let's talk about the week that's just gone. I'm sure a lot of you Fulham fans will still be basking in the glory of that West London Derby triumph, taking the bragging rights after it didn't look likely. So let's just reflect on that a bit further.
00:00:51
Speaker
I wasn't able to see this game live, so I made sure that when I got back home, I made sure that I was able to watch the game. So I turned off all notifications from anyone that was likely to send me messages about this game. I stayed away from social short media so I can watch it in its entirety to make my own assumptions and do a bit of research because Well, we have to do our research at this at the Daily Fulham. It's not all off the top of my head, believe it or not, as much as I try and make out that it is, maybe sometimes.

Harry Wilson's Impact and Team Dynamics

00:01:27
Speaker
So yes, let's look back on that game on Monday night and what an occasion it was really. Harry Wilson scoring two stoppage time goals to turn the tides and turn agony into ecstasy. It looked like it was going to be another another game this season, which we've seen quite frequently of
00:01:44
Speaker
Fulham's domination, having a lot of chances on goal, a lot of territory, but ultimately not getting their just rewards for it, ah which has been the case on so many occasions. that I think this you know there's not not been many games at all really where you can so say they've they've been outplayed apart from possibly the Aston Villa game at home. even even the toughest game on Paperweight Man City. They weren't outplayed, were they? They had their chances to win that game. And that's been a familiar tale, just been stung by late goals, the inability to keep hold of a lead. But this was a little bit different this time, was it? Because ah they had to come from behind. And they'd not been so used to conceding the first goal this season. They're up there with just behind not in the forest for for scoring the first goal. So they do get out out of the traps pretty quickly and then just succumb to this sucker punch. and
00:02:31
Speaker
It wasn't at the end of the game, but it was during that first half that they came to that circuit punch, that Yanok goal from distance, as with Fulham, were just looking dominant. And if any team looked like they were going to score, it was going to be Fulham, but Brent from England with that circuit punch. And they just, they made their intentions clear, didn't they? They were just, they were there, they got that goal and they were just going to sit on that lead. And if you're, if you're watching that game as a Fulham fan on TV or, or at the ground, you're thinking, are you joking me? Or would still that affect? Because It was just so so undeserved and then the minutes pass by and it just doesn't look likely they seem to almost run out of ideas have so many shots on goal and so many crosses so many touches in the opposition box.
00:03:15
Speaker
You've got to give Brentford credit on on one hand though, don't you? Because it was a a tremendous defensive rearguard performance after half the shipping three goals against the Wolves and Ipswich, two teams struggling at the bottom of the table. The fact that they've conceded 18 goals this season shows that the defensive they had been able to be got at. So as a Fulham fan, you're thinking, what why today? you open You open your legs for those other teams, but in this West London derby, you turn into prime Maldini or whoever, just block it blocking shots and everything. but Come of the hour, come of Harry Wilson. then and i'm I'm delighted for the player to get those two goals because it's been a little bit of a testing time for him recently at Fullerman.
00:03:55
Speaker
notably in his interview after the game he admitted his frustrations and it's nice it's quite refreshing to hear that honestly at times from players because often in media they give you those trained answers of no i'm I'm just working hard in training keep my head down and I hope to get a chance but he admitted to his restraints frustrations about not getting getting the game time.

Past Successes and Changing Narratives

00:04:14
Speaker
The fact that he has been playing for Wales but he has been a The key figurehead in the Wales team and putting in superb performances and I've always felt with Harry Wilson if he gets a run of starts he'll show you what he can do. Maybe I've been guilty myself at times of not writing the play off because I've seen first-hand multiple times for club and country what he's capable of doing but I think Fulham fans
00:04:37
Speaker
maybe have written them off and you're quick to forget about someone's abilities when they're not playing regularly in the team but I still maintain the idea that he has something to offer and it was interesting to see him coming off the bench and playing in slightly different role than what he what he's played in during his time at Fulham in the Championship and in the Premier League and is that is that something that we can see a bit more of in the coming weeks and the coming months of the season that he's given you an option there to play more centrally possibly because ah He's got himself on the end of a couple of crosses to put the ball in the net, somewhat fortuitous, but you make your own look in this game, don't you? And he's arrived Johnny on the spot and yeah, tremendous scenes at the end, wasn't it? I mean, Fulham's not, Craven Cottage isn't necessarily renowned as one of the, being one of the most vociferous atmospheres or intimidating grounds to go to. It's, it's quite a nice, pleasant place, isn't it? I'm sure a lot of people love going to Craven Cottage, whether
00:05:32
Speaker
you're a visiting fan or a visiting player but you wouldn't say it's a hostile environment but the scenes at the end there were were incredible weren't they and they were somewhat akin to that run they had in the Europa League and evoking the memories probably of Juventus that 4-1 win when they overturned that 4-1 deficit.

Crystal Palace's Season Challenges

00:05:51
Speaker
Yeah, it was ah use incredible scenes and it just shows how things changed quickly because you're probably five minutes away from the narrative being, once again, that Fulham have dominated the game but have not been clinical enough in front of goal, not taken their chances, then they've ultimately been punished and you're probably looking at you're in the bottom half and you're thinking,
00:06:11
Speaker
there's so many points been either been thrown away or they've just not got their just desserts and it was nice to see them be able to come from behind because as I said they've they've taken the lead in a lot of games and had dropped 10 points from winning position so to have the backbone and be able to to overcome adversity there they deserve tremendous credit for that so yeah I'm sure a lot of people have had a a few good days few good nights just reflecting on that Brentford game but we must look forward we must look ahead to Crystal Palace before we talk about Crystal Palace let me tell you all about our sponsors

Speaker
Let's come on to Crystal Palace. It's been a bit of a difficult start to the season for them, hasn't it? Before we talk a little bit about Crystal Palace, let's just look back at recent meetings where Fulham, they aren't beaten in the last five.
00:07:32
Speaker
but four of them have been draws. There's been a couple of really drab nil-nils in there as well. I think the fondest memories in recent times would have to be that Paitin Kissami goal, which was also on a Monday night football, which pitted Martin Yoll against Ian Holloway at the time. And this didn't turn out to be a great season for Fulham because it ended in relegation, but that was certainly the highlight.
00:07:57
Speaker
and it was just so out of the blue that goal wasn't it and he did nothing before that goal to suggest that was coming and i don't think he did anything after that in a Fulham shirt as well so it was a it was a real out of the blue moment and arguably one of the best Premier League goals ever certainly Fulham's best Premier League goal ever you would think but it it didn't win goal of the season because that went to Jack Wilshire for a well-worked team goal for Arsenal against Norwich, which I think was only a week or two prior to that. Was it big six buyers that that was goal this season? Quite possibly. ah Yeah, the Kasami goal was, he hit that so sweet, didn't he? And I think Fulham won that game 4-1, so that's probably the fondest memory Fulham fans will have in recent outings. But let's talk about Crystal Palace. And they've had a bit of a difficult start to the season, haven't they?
00:08:51
Speaker
a lot was expected really wasn't it given the way they finished last season and people were probably tipping in tipping them for a European push but It's not quite come to pass on the evidence of what we've seen so far, but they have taken the four points from the last two. Crucial to get that win against Spurs in the last home game because you wouldn't want to be going any longer without getting that one. So there are still two teams in the league that haven't won a game, being Ipswich and Walls and Crystal the Palace for a large part were one of those teams as well as Southampton that hadn't managed to get a one on the board. so
00:09:27
Speaker
they won that game and then they got a point away at Molyneux which was a highly entertaining 2-2 draw yeah so Oliver Glazner came in halfway through last season didn't he to replace Roy Hodgson and they needed a change I think Roy Hodgson's done an incredible job at a lot of clubs and he's had two spells at Crystal Palace I think he again he did a commendable job he made sure During his time at the club that they're an established Premier League side and not a team you have any concerns about at the start of the season, and that they're going to be in a relegation dogfight even when they have had slow starts of the season, and they normally always manage to pull themselves out of it and finish anywhere between 11th, 15th, 16th, that sort of range.
00:10:11
Speaker
glasner came in and injected a new lease of life and gave confidence to certain players that maybe be before we hadn't seen the best of someone like Jean-Philippe Mateta who was seemingly scoring every single week at the back end of last season and He continued that in the summer with the French Olympic teams, but I think what you saw is everyone was playing at their maximum but ability. As a is is a fantastic player, he's done well and under Roy Hodgson as well, and he was actually someone Marco Silva spoke highly about in a press conference prior to this game. He said he's a player he really enjoys, but you saw him perform well, Adam Wharton, and let's not forget Alise as well. Alise is a massive missing.
00:10:53
Speaker
Have they suffered from the the players they've lost this season? At least they go into Bayern Munich. Yeah, he's an incredible talent, isn't he? And he's he's gone on to Bayern Munich, a massive club in Europe. Yeah, they haven't maybe replaced him. Saas come in and maybe hasn't hit the heights.
00:11:11
Speaker
and Kettier as well. not score yet He was never really a prolific goalscorer at Arsenal, wasn't he? And Glazner's been very loyal to him, but no goals this season. And they've just managed the eight goals altogether. The fact that they're two centre halves got on the score sheet in her last outing, I don't know if whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. and I guess the issue is, is it the forward line or is it the supply line? Because you look at overall stats, they've only scored two goals from open play and that shows that maybe they haven't been creating the chances they would like and they they seem to have lost that great counterattacking ability that you have associated with Palace teams in years gone by and when they've had success in the Premier League with the likes of Wilfred Sahar and the aforementioned Eze and
00:11:59
Speaker
they just seem to have lost something. And another noticeable departure is Joachim Anderson, who at the time, a lot of people thought that move to Fulham. Well, it did seem to come out of the blue, didn't it really? And I don't think anyone expected to happen because it did seem like a sideways move. Some people even went as far as to say it was a downwards move. Well, if you look at the the two clubs' respective positions in the table and the way they've been built play in there. It's been anything but that are downwards moving. I know they brought in La Croix to replace him and I think a lot of Crystal Palace fans are positive about his performances, but as an overall team, I think you're just seeing them back to normality. What we saw towards the back end of last season was everyone just playing at the peak of their powers, Wharton getting into the England squad as well.

Tactical Analysis for Fulham vs Crystal Palace

00:12:46
Speaker
They had a number of plays and then they got into the England day Euro squad.
00:12:50
Speaker
maybe they just not quite hit those levels. I don't i personally feel they'll be absolutely fine, and but I think it's just, it gives you more of a sense of realism now that this is the level of those players and maybe they were just performing above what their normal standards are. But given those stats, the fact that they have two goals from open play and and Ketty has not got on the score sheet as he's struggled I know he's out with an injury but yeah a bit of course and concern for glasner going forward they'll hope to rectify that pretty quickly before we get into the nuts and bolts and team selections and score predictions things like that

for this game, so have Fulham got them at the best possible time, possibly. They may have to play certain personnel in unfamiliar positions, so square pegs in round holes. Central midfield is an area which is going to be interesting to look at, see who they go with in there, because they are missing Will Hughes, they're missing Lehrmer, Walton's a big miss with an injury as well, so that could be an area they potentially struggle and might have to look at bringing in other options from other areas of the park that you wouldn't normally see in there. So what way he decides to go, he's probably down to the bare bones and and and that's maybe an area Fulham can look to exploit as far as Fulham are concerned.
00:14:43
Speaker
Marco Silva, he's very reluctant to change his team, isn't he? And certainly after a win, I wouldn't expect him to change. There's no new injury concerns. It looks like Sassa Lukic is progressing well on the injury front, so we may see him involved in the matchday squad against Wolves. If not, I'm sure he'll be back after the international break, so that's good news because he has started the season particularly well and Sander Berger who I must also mention who had a very shaky game against Aston Villa was better against Everton and watching the game back against Brentford I thought he was absolutely fantastic and that's that was by far and away his best performance in the Fulham shirt and he was
00:15:30
Speaker
You know, he was putting out fires there, not necessarily doing the things you might have seen him do in a Boonee and shef whogenise shefage a where he's rampaging forward, running forward with the ball. He was putting out fires, getting in the way of things and that block at the end as well. Absolutely absolutely fantastic throwing his body on the line there. So he looks like he's growing into that shirt. and It'll be interesting in going forward when Sassa Lukic's back fit what his first choice options are in that centre of the park. What type of game am I expecting? I feel like Crystal Palace will almost set up this in this game as the away team. It's another game where I can see Fulham dominate in the possession.
00:16:18
Speaker
controlling the game. Crystal Palace aren't free scoring. So the first goal in this one can be absolutely vital. Of course, they will be buoyed by the fact that they managed to win their last home game. They'll also be asked in the villa in the cup as well, so they'll certainly be hoping there that they turn in the corner. But just given the fact that Fulham aren't hampered by injuries and Crystal Palace do have a few out, I think Fulham can exploit that certainly in that area in midfield which they do look vulnerable.
00:16:51
Speaker
So I can see Fulham sneaking this one 1-0, probably not being, I wouldn't expect that high score in thrilling encounters. Recent meetings in the league between them suggest it's normally tight, sometimes pretty cagey, sometimes pretty boring. So I can see possibly one of those games where there's not many clear-cut chances, but as I said with Crystal Palace's low scoring output, just the eight goals. I think if all of them do get the noses in front, they may be able to hang on to it, which has been the problem this season, and hasn't it? But yeah, I'm fully optimistic from a full perspective that they can get three points from this game.

Player Form and Lineup Predictions

00:17:34
Speaker
And I think we touched on recently that they had a nice
00:17:39
Speaker
nice-ish run of fixtures as nice as fixtures can be in the Premier League because it can be can be a bit disrespectful to say you know you fancy your win here, you fancy your win here, you fancy your win here because it doesn't play like play out like that and equally Crystal Palace will look at this at home game to Fulham, they'll be fancying their chances to pick up points as well so it's ah it's a winnable game from both teams I just think Fulham are in the better position not only in the league table but the way the squad is at the moment Reece Nelson as well getting his first start. I think that was that was something that we we've been expecting for a little while. And he was bright again, wasn't he? He's been lively and every every time he's put on a full-on shirt, he just lacked that finishing touch, didn't he? But so I'm sure Marco Silva will go with his team. And if it's not working out, he does have the options off the bench, as we saw with Adama Troyer and Harry Wilson working to good effect. so
00:18:33
Speaker
Yeah, I see Fulham winning, possibly a bit of a low key affair, premium clear cut chances kept to a minimum, but um yeah, I'm gonna go for a Fulham 1-0 win, back to back wins, back to back London Derby wins.
