So wedding pros, it is your time to make more income without booking more events. It's called passive income. In my four years of business coaching, I learned so much about affiliate marketing. 00:00:43
Speaker

And I implemented it in a weekend and so can you. So watch my nine minute video in the show notes and let me blow your mind. And Forbes just announced that digital marketing is the highest paying job um two years in a row. So hop on it.
00:01:12
Speaker
And my only regret is not starting sooner. So when you have passive income rolling in, you can choose the weddings you want and raise your

Weekend Warrior Lifestyle
00:03:57
Speaker
And yeah, but before we begin, Robert, just tell the audience a little bit about yourself. All right. My name is Robert Hilo for Hilo Productions. And we I am the owner of a company that specializes with DJs and MCs as well. Going strong for more than a decade now. More than if two decades, right? Yeah. Sorry to age you. Stop counting. county yeah yeah I mean, I guess a random question, but what was your like what is your life like as a wedding DJ? What do you do when you like wake up? What's your like daily routine? What's your mindset on on game day, wedding day? What does your life look like?
00:04:43
Speaker
well ah you know I wake up in the morning. Well, I don't wake up in the morning. My wife wakes up first in the morning. And then she yeah gives us a root of awakening. Hey, let's go wake up. I'm a slow waker upper, ah if that's a word. And it takes me a while. But I, you know, do the normal things, take my daughter, daughter, Leah to school.
00:05:10
Speaker
And then after that, I go to my yoga class. I need it, gets me all centered, and I start making my goals for today as well. For example, my goal today is just to reconnect and accomplish a lot of stuff as well. After that, it's more like get stuff done as soon as possible because we got to pick up our kid. After that, dinner,
00:05:39
Speaker
maybe a couple meetings with our clients as well. But for the weekends, ah, well, it's more like I work on the weekends. And I've been doing that for the past, I don't know how many years. Sometimes it's kind of sad because I see all my friends on Facebook or Instagram and they are just enjoying their weekends. I'm like, ah, I remember that life. But I don't regret anything.
00:06:09
Speaker
I love being a weekend warrior, have a lot of friends, and it's going great.
Customizing Weddings Beyond the Norm
00:06:17
Speaker
Yeah, I love that weekend warrior. I've never heard that one before. Really, weekend can warrior. yeah i meant we But a lot of people don't understand that it's not just we work on the weekends, too. And then there's a lot of preparation that goes into what we do. A lot of preparation, a lot of meetings and social media, of course.
00:06:39
Speaker
Yeah, got the post post post. Well, would you say like, I would say, what type of client do love working with? And how do you create like that good relationship with them? Well, I like the ones that really trust me. That really under trusts my judgment as well. But a lot of them,
00:07:05
Speaker
They because I've been there. I know I know what's good for them. But of course, I need to respect their wishes as well. And as soon as I listen to their all their wishes, then I will offer all these little tips and tricks to enhance their experience as well. And what that's where we come from. you know I've been through all these experiences. And please, I'm a sponge. Use me. Ask me all these questions so that way we can make your wedding more than just the cookie cutter event as well.

I just like the fact that it feels like myself. like i can I feel myself when I see this. Oh, man. Well, you got me pumped and excited for this. Carissa, thank you. I love that. I mean, you're a great listener and yeah, you have a lot of experiences. So you've seen a lot.
00:09:16
Speaker
um maybe things that could go wrong and you could kind of tell them how to not have those things happen to them. The pitfalls, right? Oh, yeah. I mean, I've had my share of ah of horror stories too as well. And I'm not afraid to share all these horror storie stories with our couples as well, because I meant they happened in the past.
00:09:41
Speaker
And it shows that we knew how to fix as a company, you know how to fix all these problems. And now you have your solutions for a plan A, a plan B, a plan C as well. And that is one of the ah factors that our couples love to hear that we always have a plan A, B, C ready to go.
Health Tips for Wedding Pros
00:10:03
Speaker
I love that. I have a kind of like a heartfelt question, but I've been in the game for Yeah, two decades and you look young. So it doesn't seem like you've been in the game for that long. But what kind of character characteristics do you have to have to stay in the wedding business for this long and keep on keep that client list going keep booking these weddings like what does it take really for someone to last like the endurance
00:10:32
Speaker
You need to, number one, you have to keep up with current events, music as well, and two, you also have to take care of your body as well. Take care of yourself. I meant, I um i am highly allergic to nuts, so I just force myself to bring my own food.
00:10:56
Speaker
I love the food at the hotel when they give you that meal. and But sometimes I just need... Oh, they have a lot of desserts. Oh my gosh, I really love that. But I have to say no. And if I keep on going down that route, it's going to show. Not to mention, I don't want to buy any more extra suits anymore. I like to stay the safe stay the same as well. So you really have to take care of yourself.
00:11:23
Speaker
yeah It's we're we're on our feet for probably 14 to 16 hours a day. Yeah. And you really need the stamina to go from morning till night, have your that smile ready to go for your couples. Because again, they're paying big bucks for you. So you need to be on your toes ready to serve them. I love that. Yeah, wait, it's ah it's a
00:11:54
Speaker
I feel like we're like wedding athletes, right? Like wedding pro athletes. Like we, I don't know, it's kind of like a marathon for a day. Like where we're getting in those 20,000 steps and it's no joke. Yeah. Yeah. And you, you brought that up. Like we're athletes. I meant part of my, my successor, the way I do things is I, I talked to myself the night before a wedding and I'm more of a,
00:12:24
Speaker
I'm more of a, I'm hard on myself ah the night before. Not the, all right, you can do it, Robert. You're the best. you got That's not me. I'm like, all right, come on. We got this going on. We have this going on. I'm
Engaged Couples' Preparation Tips
00:12:39
Speaker
going to show them. i got i'm I'm thinking about all these possible experiences or all these ways that things could go wrong. And the fact is when I finally step onto the property, I'm ready for anything and anything that could just go wrong. wow And the fact that I'm because I remember if I let my guard down
00:13:02
Speaker
If I let my guard down and I'm not ready, I really take that to heart. Wow. So I really, you need to have your game face on. Totally. My game face. My game face. Aggression, aggressive, but polite and energetic and fun and whimsical and happy. My game face. That's your game face.
00:13:25
Speaker
yeah All right, so me and you, yeah, you've been on the podcast three, four times. We talked about networking. We talked about sales process. We talked about getting on the preferred venue list. What is your hot topic today? And why is it so near and dear to your heart?
00:13:40
Speaker
Today, I want to talk about, this is for this goes out to the engaged couples, how to fully prepare for your wedding months before. There is a process and there are some steps you need to do because again, when you're getting married,
00:14:00
Speaker
yeah Yes, you're getting married on the day of, I get it. But the months before, it should be enjoyable and fun or we should at least take some of the stress out. Because if you're suffering and you're stressing out those months coming up, it's not fun. You're going to get sick. You're going to, you just want to get it done with.
00:14:25
Speaker
And there has to be a way to really enjoy your process. So I'm ah i'm going to give you some tips to all the couples on how to prepare for prior to your wedding.
00:14:39
Speaker
I'm excited to share with you all about our first Get A Heck Yes sponsor, Seventeen Hats. I've been using this CRM company for over a decade and I've been referring them to all my frienders for all this time. I always know when I'm going to get paid and most importantly, I get paid. 00:15:05

00:16:00
Speaker
Well, number one, I would really want all our couples to really get stuff done ahead of time. Get it all the big stuff done ah ahead of time, which is getting your vendors, love the main vendors, for example, your photographer, your videographer and your or your DJ, get them all done. So that way, the last few months before your wedding,
00:16:27
Speaker
you can actually sweat the smaller things, of course. And I'm a big fan of just doing your homework, getting it all done. And then you can just coast and take care of all the little stuff as well. Do you have some sort of like a mindset tip for bride and grooms? Like say, like, I feel like some people have a hard time making decisions. I think that's what I've seen in my experience of deciding, um you know, what photographer or DJ and then therefore they wait on it and then that gets booked or just scrambling to find someone. What would like a mindset shift be to like, just kind of check it off the list. Okay. Do it now. I tell this to everyone too as well. Okay.
00:17:18
Speaker
You know how you found, I always tell them, do you know how you found your partner? You guys are, i um this is me talking to the couple, and you guys are together. And somehow you can explain it, but you're together.
00:17:35
Speaker
And you know that person is the one for you. Can't explain it, but you just know in your gut, that's the person. Well, the same thing goes for your vendor. If you find that spark, if you find that person that you absolutely connect with and you see eye to eye, you get each other's vision and it's just a match.
Staying True to Wedding Vision
00:17:56
Speaker
Oh, by all means, you better book that person.
00:18:00
Speaker
Because moving forward through the months after you book them, you will have peace of mind knowing they will take great care of you and they understand your vision. And if you get someone, for example, that you maybe just book them just based on price and you really don't know too much about them,
00:18:24
Speaker
That's where the stress starts to fall in. Did I do the right thing? Did I invest the right into the right person? Does this person understand my vision? So always, ah should I say, you got to go for that gut feeling. The gut feeling is there. ah I'm going to go back to ah going back to Instagram as well or when people do some searches is when When you find somebody, okay?
00:18:54
Speaker
Please get them But if not because I know there's a lot of stalking There's a lot of of videos late at night just looking over videos and oh, I kind of like that person I kind of like this person and then you finally Okay, I'm going to contact them after all this watching. I'm going to contact them and then You find out, oh crap, they're not there they're not even available. Then you gotta start your search again. Hence that goes back to get it done right away. If you like that person, you kinda, just contact them right away. Get it done, get it done.
00:19:28
Speaker
I love it, I love it. Trust your gut. Tip number two, go for it. Ew, yeah. I would say to get your mind ready. Again, to see, that goes back to but even me being the athlete. The couple's here, you're athletes as well. Get your mind ready. And when I say that, I mean, you have to know what your vision is for the wedding. Is it outdoors, whimsical, airy? is it more Would you like it more more games?
00:19:58
Speaker
but you have your vision. Sometimes parents love to give their opinions and they have to say, no, we want it like this. We want it like that. Don't forget about your aunts or uncles. We're inviting them all there. No, it has to be done this way. Okay. I want, yeah, there's a little, some truth to that, but I want you to understand you need to harness your own vision and stay strong with that throughout the months because I guarantee you if you do your wedding,
00:20:28
Speaker
accommodating other people, but you don't do it to your vision. Five years from now, 10 years from now, you're going to regret it. And it's just going to be going through the motions and then it's done. yeah Harness your vision, stay with it.
00:20:48
Speaker
Photographers, I am so thrilled to announce my new sponsors Aftershoot, an AI editing company. They do AI editing, unlimited cropping and straightening. I am seriously blown away by the precision and five hours a week I get back in my life. My life is so much better and I literally don't have any more anxiety. It's so crazy.
00:21:12
Speaker
I remember being at barbecues with my laptop because I had to get out of shoot and and that was so stressful, so not fun. And the best part about after shoot compared to their competition is that it's a monthly minimal cost, not cost per image because I am a true overshooter. I could shoot like, I don't know, 3000 photos in an engagement shoot, which is not good. But anyways, using my code in the show notes to get a 30 day trial and 20% off you're going to get in the software and just go crazy with it. And AfterShoot edits 2.0 just released and they have a lot of new features that you are going to love. AfterShoot, I can't thank you enough for giving me back my time to focus on this podcast. Oh yeah, back to the podcast. Yeah, I mean, I had a pretty big wedding. You were the DJ and my vision was very strong. um I really wanted to get married at one of those like hipster venues that were... I remember that.
00:22:10
Speaker
cheap, but really cute and kind of in the ghetto. Um, it was in like mid La Brea. Um, so it was, I think at the time it was only $3,000 to get married there, but you had to bring everything, but I really wanted something like that, like smog shop or, um, it was photography studio 1432. Yeah. they Studio for 1342. You're right. Um, it's gone now, but I put that on my Pinterest board. I put, um,
00:22:40
Speaker
the bridesmaid dresses, what I wanted my bride, my wedding gown to look like, the bouquets. And I looked at it every single day. This is literally what I coach, which is funny because I like coach you to look at your like big vision board for your yeah Instagram. So I'm like, I had to look at every day or I would get confused from all the clutter of Instagram and Pinterest and I like this and I like this like this. Oh my god No, I should have done that. So I had to stick with my vision Exactly.
00:23:11
Speaker
exactly so Yeah, and that's um that's the whole thing because again 10 years from now You're going to regret it if you don't stick with your vision as well and you won't have nothing to talk about with your partner and It's just going to be another, you know, glorified dinner. and And then it's just done. Everybody goes on about their life. Don't do that to yourself. Please don't. Yeah, that's a really deep tip. So take us away with tip number three. Moving on. If I would, um, I would say in order for you to really enjoy your day, assign someone to feed you. And I'm talking about on your wedding day now.
00:23:49
Speaker
to feed you, to force feed you. And I'm talking about... ah hi Talk to somebody, your best man. Maybe you're made of honor. Tell them. A physical conversation. Hey, look. Hey, bro. you know ah There's a million things going on in my mind.
00:24:12
Speaker
and I just need you to feed me. Even if I say no, I can't eat, your job is to feed me. And I'm not talking protein bars and red bulls. I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about food like in and out, something so to get you going. I've seen a lot of brides that hold off until maybe six o'clock in the evening and they are on they are just running on fumes. okay And now
00:24:43
Speaker
they Their meal is there, but they can only stomach in a couple bites. No, no. And then... they're going to be going against all these shots or drinks coming through the next day um in the next couple hours. yep Again, and this I guess we're going back to the athletes, okay? It's a marathon, it's not a sprint.
Final Wedding Day Tips
00:25:05
Speaker
here So by the time it's six, yeah yeah by 6 p.m., you already have all this food ready in your stomach and you're ready to go into battle. Totally. I feel like they you have to plan out the times to eat.
00:25:19
Speaker
like a 10 minute break and you have to schedule in when your you know best man should go to the fast food or go to the market and get you that food or if you have it on deck already. yeah yeah Most importantly, most importantly, even even if I say, oh, I can't eat, their job is to put it down your throat.
00:25:44
Speaker
really i love that you're bringing this up because my bride on saturday she said she was really hungry um right after before the ceremony i did offer her a c cliff bar but she denied it but she looked very faint and like a little bit hangry yeah yeah exactly i mean these are all all these tips are really for your a lot of these tips here i'm mentioning they are for your mental health And again, to make your process through the day and, you know, months just enjoyable. Yeah, I love it. Okay, how many more tips do you have to? Oh, just hey, you know what? I'm all for drinking. I love drinking. But sometimes people want to drink hard the night before. I would say if you're going to do it, just maybe a couple just relax.
00:26:38
Speaker
it's It's kind of like when you go to Vegas, I'm going to use this Vegas analogy, where you go on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and you know you're going to be hanging out Friday night, it's going to be drinking or partying, and then there's another night of going out again. And it's more like you want to party lightly, but you want to save it for the big party on Saturday, and you can go all out.
00:27:06
Speaker
Because if you go too hard on Friday, you're just going to be running on fumes on Saturday and trying to force yourself to enjoy it as well. So please promise me, promise me everyone, just take it easy. You can have drinks or whatever and take it nice and light, but just take it nice and light. yeah Save it for the big party on Saturday. Morning, pros. I have a new and exciting opportunity for you to make passive income with digital products and courses and affiliate marketing.
00:27:36
Speaker
The space is booming right now and you have to take a look. Sky is truly the limit in the digital space and you can just stop trading your time for money and scale your business. And life just got a lot easier. Get your weekends back and come at me at Carissa Woo, the word info, and I'll send you a free sneak peek guide on how to make passive income. And if you're ready to start making money from home while being there for the moments that matter, I can't wait to connect.
00:28:09
Speaker
Yeah, it breaks my heart when people say they're hungover on their wedding day and they look like they're going to vomit. And I always tell people not to drink before the engagement shoot as well because their face just looks a little bit dried out to and puffy. So it shows shows in the pictures. Um, yeah, you could, you could definitely tell them. They just look like dehydrated. So yeah.
00:28:35
Speaker
We don't want to and that's extra work on your part for Photoshop. So yeah, save me the time. Please save me the time as well. But yeah, that's pretty much it. That's pretty much it.
Understanding Client Needs
00:28:49
Speaker
I love it. So pretty much the overall theme is we are athletes as a wedding DJ, as a wedding photographer. It's game day, but you guys as a couple, you guys are actually the athletes and the star of your own show on wedding day. So you have to take care of yourself. You have to prepare. You have to prepare your mind. um You have to um know your vision and you are going to have the best day. Wow. When you sum it up like that,
00:29:22
Speaker
Did you really even need me for this podcast then? Because you just summed it up in the like and a minute. I was just talking my ass off then. I didn't need you do at all. Yeah. yeah yeah Why? Why? I'll just pull 75% of the podcast. This is not even a, this is more just like a quick story on Instagram and done. No, yeah no I really love this conversation. Just a couple of more questions. Go ahead.
00:29:51
Speaker
this is for wedding pros and for couples, but I would say like from your experience, your two decade long of experience, um what are maybe like one major like pitfall that someone could avoid? Like for me it would be um makeup like going too long and then just the whole timeline gets thrown off and then how to avoid that. and How about for you as a wedding DJ?
00:30:16
Speaker
ah I would say, I guess if we're going to talk about if we're going to talk about music, youre
00:30:25
Speaker
for me, ah I would say it's all about really understanding what their ah fears fears and obstacles are in this wedding. right Part of my thing is I really need to listen about what the couple loves, what their fears are. And if I just walk into this wedding and I just start playing a random song that I think would be great, but then I find out you know that was uh, their late grandmother's, you know, favorite song. And it just brings up memories. That means I didn't do my, I didn't do my homework as well. Okay. So my job is really to really dive deep into what their fears, um, their wants, their needs. By the time I step onto the property, I should already know everything, anything about this couple. I just got a phone call, uh, last night.
00:31:24
Speaker
from one of my clients this Saturday. And he said, Robert, you know what? i'm not I didn't want to text you. I didn't want to email you. I wanted to call you and thank you personally for a great experience, for understanding us from left so write up to up and down, just inside and out. You knew from the very first time that we from the very first time we connected on our first meeting to the very end, your vision, and your're you were looking out for us. And we we felt that as well. if you If you go into this wedding and think, oh, I'm just going to jump in and I'm going to take pictures, or I'm just going to play some music, well, then that there's a lot of things that will be ah missed, missed opportunity. Don't want that. Don't want that at all.
00:32:20
Speaker
Yeah, you're really good at that. For my wedding, you came over and just picked our brains about like us liking like 90s hip hop and do not play the cupid shuffle. Do not do this, but do this. You can play Aaliyah and Ashanti, but maybe not Diddy. I don't know. So I'm like, you're just taking in all this information and creating this amazing playlist for us. And when shit hits the fan where like our guests are too drunk, then you started doing ah dance a danceoff a dance a dance competition that really engage a crowd. So it's like you're reading the room and that comes from experience and expertise. Yeah, I meant ah the fact that that's why I tell everyone ah when you're getting someone, getting the right people, the pros, it really does help.

because for one person who hasn't been doing it very very long, well, they can only think about maybe what's the next song to play. But you have a professional that can go many different routes. If this song doesn't work, I could pick it up here. Or maybe this song doesn't work, then I could go down this route, right? We're ready to go. We have an arsenal ah and we already know how to fix the situation without the couple even knowing because they they they just want a great experience.

I love that. Okay. One more question before we tell everyone where to find you and work with you and youre all your social media handles, but speak to the hearts of couples that are engaged. They don't know where to start. They are kind of stressed out. They're feeling

you know, that cloud nine feeling, but it kind of drops because of all the expenses and everyone throwing things at them and just seeing so much stuff on Instagram and not knowing where to go or what to do. Talk to them, give them a little bit of a pep talk and say it's okay. Yeah. Uh, first things first, you know what? Here's my thing. You can text somebody and that's great and all, but you can't fill in any any emotion through a text.

I'm all about that phone call, the first initial phone call when you're really getting to know them because I'm also, they're screening me. I'm screening them and I want to make sure that we just were a good fit. So I would say the first phone call, get to get to know them, talk to them. You get a good feeling. And that's where your gut feeling comes into play because I,

can't sense anything or they can't sense anything just by typing a couple messages. Get on the phone, get in touch with them, and get a good feel. I meant, think about it. When ah you you have your partner all the time, is it always just texting, texting, texting, or is it more like physical contact talking as well? And that's how you guys really, really connect. All right? So that's how Yeah, pretty much. Love that. That's so good. You're all about connection. And where can everyone find you and work with you? Okay, you can find me at my website, of course, it's kiloproductions.com. Or you can go on my Instagram, where it's kiloproductionsevents.
