Introducing Special Guests
00:00:52
Coy Baker
What's up, guys?
00:00:53
Denis Tyrell
My boy, what's up? And a super special guest, Tony Satani from Hourglass Knives.
00:01:01
Coy Baker
Who? Oh, never mind.
00:01:02
Tony C
Tony Satani. It's Satani, but hey, it's okay. No problem at all.
00:01:05
Denis Tyrell
I say, well, why is it not Satani?
00:01:07
Tony C
Because I don't know. They say that it's actually pronounced Chitani, but, you know, I go with it all. I'm just, yeah, I'm just.
00:01:13
Denis Tyrell
Okay. All right. Good deal. Yeah. So, uh, what?
00:01:16
Coy Baker
Already messing up, Jared.
00:01:19
Denis Tyrell
I just, might that's what I do.
00:01:21
Coy Baker
Already messing up. I told you should the intro.
00:01:22
Denis Tyrell
That's what I do.
00:01:22
Tony C
I mean, he didn't mess.
00:01:24
Tony C
Man, we talked about this. We talked about this for 20 minutes.
00:01:24
Denis Tyrell
That's what I do.
00:01:29
Tony C
Chitani. And there you go. You Chitani.
00:01:34
Coy Baker
Hey, Dennis isn't here. We got to pick on somebody.
00:01:37
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I know. I'm just, know, do your thing.
00:01:38
Tony C
Not going to be me
00:01:40
Coy Baker
All right, go for it.
00:01:41
Denis Tyrell
Um, go for it. Okay. Satani, uh, no soup for, for real, everybody.
00:01:49
Denis Tyrell
Uh, Koi, thank you for being here. Tony, it's good to see your face and and and talk to you here.
00:01:53
Tony C
course. See you, man.
00:01:55
Denis Tyrell
But Tony is super special, special guy for
Jared's Knife-Making Journey
00:01:59
Denis Tyrell
me. There's probably two people that were really influential, monumental in the beginning of my knife making journey.
00:02:06
Denis Tyrell
One of them happens to be the the co-host, Mr. Dennis Terrell. But including that was a ah very beautiful soul, Mr. Satani, who we happened to, I was at work and um talking to some people about I was trying to start making knives and this dude that I don't think he works there anymore.
00:02:29
Denis Tyrell
But he comes and he goes, oh, yeah, my buddy makes knives. And i'm like, oh, yeah.
00:02:32
Tony C
Oh, that's right, yeah.
00:02:34
Denis Tyrell
I'm like, oh, yeah, I guess, you know, like, sure, it isn't do like what I do, you know. And I think at that point I had like etched a a folder knife, stonewashed a spider coat somewhere.
00:02:45
Denis Tyrell
But anyway, he goes, yeah, he makes s knives. And I said, oh, yeah, we'll reach out to him, see if he's, you know, also talking about. Anyways, long story short, end up getting Tony's number. And just doing the Hail Mary, because that's kind of how I did this whole knife making journey was just every time I wanted to say no, I just said yes and started doing that. So I reach out to him.
00:03:05
Denis Tyrell
Dude talks to me in Spanish for the first three, four minutes of the phone call. So if you guys know Tony, that's his, that's his jam.
00:03:14
Denis Tyrell
And he committed and I'm like, uh, and obviously I'm the world's worst Mexican, so I don't speak a lick of Spanish and he's just going after it. And, uh, yeah, it was beautiful.
00:03:23
Denis Tyrell
So I knew I was in ah in a good spot, but a long story short, man, uh, got to, at some point we started talking, chatting, um, shared a bunch of information, looked at my stuff, told me it all sucked, uh, which I really appreciated.
00:03:36
Tony C
I don't know if said it like that.
00:03:37
Denis Tyrell
Well, I mean, to just paraphrasing here, buddy. But yeah.
00:03:40
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. You know, but, you know, and I think that's one of the things that this community kind of lacks, right, is a little bit of truth to some things. If you're a brand new maker, chances are your shit is going to get better. And ah he he was very honest with me. One of the the qualities that I appreciate from both Dennis and and him.
00:03:56
Denis Tyrell
um And then We'd talk for a while and then end up ah very graciously had me over to his house, flew out to Idaho, ah broke out of this, ah you know, went to free land to America.
00:04:11
Denis Tyrell
Got to go check out, got to go check out Idaho. He had me over for. a weekend um and just made knives and in the shop and hung out with him and his, ah his beautiful kids and, and just had a great time.
00:04:24
Denis Tyrell
ah That trip right there kind of really set the tone, got me inspired. And like, you'll see probably subconsciously, I was just thinking about this. If there's a maker that I'm going to, emulate steel, if you will. Cause I think that's the word that, you know, when people say ah it's going to be Tony, cause it's just one of those things where I'll, I'll kind of do something and I'll be like, Oh, that looks like I'm so original. That looks great. and then I'll look over and you start, you'll see things, but ah you know, that's, that's kind of influence that he's had um with me. And you know, but
00:04:58
Denis Tyrell
I super appreciate you, brother. And I'm so grateful for for the time that we got to hang out back and for the for the help along the way and for you being here.
00:05:08
Denis Tyrell
So I'll shut up about you. And, you know, I guess just to give the people a little opportunity for you to kind of tell about yourself. I mean, i don't we're not really an interview show, but, you know, how do you get going?
00:05:20
Denis Tyrell
How long you been doing this for the, you know, a couple of people that may not know you.
00:05:25
Denis Tyrell
um Get on the couch. Let's go.
00:05:27
Tony C
on the couch. Is it a black couch?
00:05:30
Denis Tyrell
It's whatever couch you want.
00:05:32
Denis Tyrell
Just don't don't eat
Tony Satani's Knife-Making Origin
00:05:33
Denis Tyrell
the frosting.
00:05:38
Tony C
Anyways, yeah, I'm Tony Satani with Hourglass Knives. I started making knives in 2017. two thousand and seventeen i It doesn't say on there. I'm pretty sure it's 2017. I was just injured injured again. I had another ACL tear on the same knee and I had just figured out Facebook a little bit. I hadn't really been active ever in Facebook and I found a group and I found some knives that were really cheap.
00:06:04
Tony C
And I think when I was on disability, I think I spent $1,000, which was a lot, on knives in one month. And I was like, there's got to be a way to make these. And somehow I found stock removal. And I watched some videos on YouTube. I read a ton of stuff on blade forums.
00:06:20
Tony C
Um, because again, I didn't know about any custom knife makers. I knew about Benchmade, um, Buck. I mean, I knew very little about knives, I guess. I heard of Loveless and that's it.
00:06:32
Tony C
And so when I started making knives and i I see on YouTube, there's other knife makers. like, wait, other people do this. I literally just had no clue. Um, and, uh, yeah, I made my first knife and, uh,
00:06:44
Tony C
I met some makers along the way and it was really just something fun to do. And yeah, I think my first video when I'm i'm quenching my knife, I'm actually like on the ground with my knee. It's all propped up like this.
00:06:56
Tony C
And like, people are like, you're not supposed to be doing that. That can cause a fire. But I literally can barely move because I just had surgery and I just fell love with it. It it turned into my my meditation. Because I guess right before that, I started getting really into sharpening knives and stuff.
00:07:10
Tony C
I guess that's that's really where it was just sharpening knives. And then now making these knives, it turned into this like, man, this is ah this is fun. you know And I found other makers that after a couple knives, they're like, hey man, you know they don't look great, but if you change a couple of things, you know you'll you'll figure some stuff out.
00:07:28
Tony C
And yeah, just I stuck with it. And it sort of worked, I guess.
00:07:35
Denis Tyrell
I mean, you've been on you've been on a couple covers.
00:07:37
Denis Tyrell
I mean, you're being a little humble here.
00:07:39
Denis Tyrell
Like, I mean...
00:07:40
Tony C
I mean, it it's just, you know, I mean, actually, it's funny because I have my first knife right here with me.
00:07:46
Coy Baker
Oh, that looks way better than my first knife.
00:07:46
Tony C
You know, look at that beautiful convex.
00:07:46
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that...
00:07:49
Tony C
You know, some bubinga handle. I mean, it's hard to see the edge, but she is so thick. I mean,
00:07:56
Denis Tyrell
I was like, I can't see your face there for a minute. No, I'm kidding.
00:08:00
Tony C
And so, you know, I started on this journey with making knives and, um, people were like, you going sell are you going to this? I was like, I'm not going sell these things, you know, just having fun. And then, and then after I stopped using just metal at the local, um, the local metal place, you know, they actually had some 10 80.
00:08:18
Tony C
So I was using good stuff. Um, I started buying more expensive steel, not just using wood from exotic wood places around my neighborhood. Um, i was like, you know, maybe I can sell one of these. And, um, and yeah, don't know. i just, I started making knives. i I, sort of started with just basic knives at first. And then I would say, man about a year, or two years in, I just really liked the the flow of knife. And I also learned this from other people, you know, um, going, um,
00:08:47
Tony C
just I wanted a knife that just flowed. You're able to look at it. It doesn't stop at one point. yet you You look down at it, you're like, that's a beautiful knife. Not, oak it gets stuck at the handle. It gets stuck at the ricasso, ah the spine, whatever it may be.
00:09:00
Tony C
You look at the knife and it just flows all together. And um and i just I started trying different curves with handles.
00:09:09
Tony C
Some of my handles looked really weird and people said they look like penises. But you know what?
00:09:14
Tony C
i was trying i was trying something new
Tony's Media Exposure Journey
00:09:17
Tony C
And um yeah, um hard
00:09:22
Tony C
it's hard to talk about myself for this long.
00:09:25
Tony C
You know, um I have, what okay, one of the one of the big things, when when I first started making knives and I started showing like, oh, there's some progress.
00:09:26
Coy Baker
Well, here, question.
00:09:32
Tony C
You know, I think I did my first couple of hormones and it actually came out good in the edge. I found Blade Magazine. I knew nothing about that. And I was like, oh my gosh, if I get in Blade Magazine someday, that would be the most magnificent thing in the world. And I think it was in 2019, someone called me and I had a knife in Blade Magazine.
00:09:56
Tony C
And it was my one of my little hunters. And it was like, don't know, towards the end, it's been a while. So blade magazine. um I think it's like up and coming makers or something like that or new things on the market. And my knife was right there. And it was just such a trip to see because I never thought I'd see a one of my personal lives in blade magazine.
00:10:16
Tony C
And um it was just I remember that it was just so cool.
00:10:16
Denis Tyrell
That's amazing.
00:10:20
Tony C
To feel that feeling and like that was that was my goal just to get a blade in there, you know, I never thought above that and um
00:10:28
Coy Baker
How did that blade end up in the magazine? Do you know?
00:10:32
Tony C
I Did an article on somebody reached out to me from Knives Illustrated. So before Blade Magazine, somebody reached out from Knives Illustrated and they did a, they had seen my knives and I used to do a lot more videos.
00:10:46
Tony C
I'm a very hyper person and with a lot of weird videos and I was trying to get sponsored. LaCroix, Pamplemousse.
00:10:55
Denis Tyrell
That's right.
00:10:56
Denis Tyrell
I remember that.
00:10:56
Tony C
um And yeah, Knives Illustrated reached out to me and they did an article on me about this Waterloo. What is that, bro? Seriously, i I didn't know that.
00:11:06
Denis Tyrell
it's It's budget.
00:11:08
Tony C
I'm going to have to cut this short and
00:11:11
Denis Tyrell
All right, guys. Thank you for listening.
00:11:14
Tony C
yeah. So at Knives Illustrated, got ahold of it and I think that was it. I think they might've found it. I can't really remember the first one. I don't know if I sent it in. I know I started sending in a lot of knife pictures and after that um I got in touch with,
00:11:29
Tony C
I can't remember the guy's name, um but he was one of their editors. I got in touch with him somehow through Facebook and I just started sending my face or my pictures right to him instead of two blade magazine. And then sometimes they would get lost or whatever. This was going right to the editor.
00:11:45
Coy Baker
Steve Shackelford.
00:11:47
Tony C
Thank you so much. Sorry about that, Steve.
00:11:50
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, i think I think it's important too, though.
00:11:52
Denis Tyrell
I mean, you you just didn't sit there and wait for it to happen. You were, you know, actively participating in getting your shit out there and hustling and, you know.
00:11:57
Tony C
Oh, absolutely. What? When I wanted that knife out there, I remember going to my first blade show. Oh my gosh. um It was 2018 and it was, I think my second jamon. That was one of the knives I brought.
00:12:10
Tony C
And I was so proud of this thing. It was blade show Atlanta, you know, the the big blade show. And, um, Man, it it hurt coming back because I wanted makers to be honest. And I asked a couple of makers that I really looked up to at the time and they just, they told me it looked like shit.
00:12:25
Tony C
They told me what was wrong with it. And they said, you're on the right track, but it looks terrible. And this and this and just things I had never thought of. And, um, Oh my goodness, man. It hurt.
00:12:36
Tony C
It hurts so bad. You know, I remember just coming back from blade show, my first blade show in 2018. And I didn't think, I don't think I touched knives for a month. Like literally it's not even that it hurt my ego. It was just, it was so much constructive criticism to take.
00:12:51
Tony C
It was really freaking hard. And I was like, I can't do this shit. I can't be like them, you know?
00:12:57
Coy Baker
Then is that why you didn't go back to Blade Show for years?
00:12:57
Denis Tyrell
But you what?
00:13:02
Tony C
No, no, gosh, I would love to go to Blades all the time. No, you start a family and things change and it's just not it's not as much as a priority as it used to be.
00:13:13
Tony C
you know, I really do want to get back out there someday. um And yeah, it's just, it's about where my where priorities are at.
00:13:20
Denis Tyrell
yeah That's awesome.
00:13:22
Coy Baker
hear that Well, i I have a question that I've always wanted to ask you. Where did that name Hourglass Knives come from? Because that doesn't seem like it fits. So there's got to be a story somewhere.
00:13:34
Tony C
There's a huge story. So I never realized coming up with a name. Oh my gosh, there's so many things i would do different now. I sat on this name for two months, I think. um It was originally going to be something like Alcoholics Knives or something like that.
00:13:47
Tony C
um You know, I'm very open about it.
00:13:50
Tony C
ah You know, I drank for years. I quit drinking in June 1st of 2009. It's something that saved my life and I'm very glad I did. But I've always been very open that, hey, I'm an alcoholic.
00:14:01
Tony C
there I was an alcoholic and and you know, I don't drink. and so I was like trying to come something funny like that. And it just wasn't sitting well with me. i don't know. i was just like, that's stupid. you know yeah You might not want to explain this. I don't know. There's just a bunch of variances. And a lot of people that know me know that I love spiders.
00:14:19
Tony C
I absolutely love spiders. um I mean, enough where I looked into becoming an arachnologist. um It was just a lot of schooling that I wouldn't be able to pass anyway. So one of the reasons I didn't do it.
00:14:31
Tony C
um Yeah, I love spiders. And one of my favorite spiders is the the Western Black Widow, the Latrodectus Hesperaris. And um I love the hourglass on the underbelly of that.
00:14:42
Tony C
um It's just something that I've always loved. I handle Black Widows and they don't scare me. And yeah.
00:14:47
Coy Baker
You're crazy person.
00:14:49
Denis Tyrell
I have a horrible, I have a horrible story to tell right now. Like it, and it is so ironic the timing of this. So, Oh my God. But it it just, it's not right if I don't say it. So i unceremoniously ended the life of a black widow last night.
00:15:11
Denis Tyrell
Later, Tony. Yeah. Yeah.
00:15:17
Denis Tyrell
oh I know, dude. And you know, it's, it's, it's, it's one of those things. I have absolute, I have, I, I hear you.
00:15:22
Tony C
it's not one of those things. They are completely harmless.
00:15:27
Coy Baker
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Harmless? That's a stretch.
00:15:29
Denis Tyrell
I hear you that that's what you're you're saying, but um I am just, yeah, scared of spiders is ah is an understatement for me. But um my my daughter and I went to something called, and Koi, you're going to love this here, buddy. It's kind of a golden nugget for you. But we went to something called Fork and Film last night.
00:15:50
Denis Tyrell
So it is a it is an event that... yeah um you go and watch a movie and they put on a dining cuisine that kind of compliments the movie. They just happen to be, you know, Disney themed.
00:16:03
Denis Tyrell
So last night I went to the, the wicked fork in film. And we were there and if from a you're from the Bay Area. So if I'm in Brentwood. I had to drive to San Mateo last night.
00:16:14
Denis Tyrell
like an hour and 20 minutes.
00:16:15
Denis Tyrell
It was Sunday night. This is where i was saying like hilariously, I was trying to schedule this podcast for us to do this last night. And complete I didn't find out until like the later on ah Friday evening that I had to do this.
00:16:28
Denis Tyrell
And I was like, shit, I'm glad I didn't. This all didn't work out. So anyways, drive over there, do that. Wonderful evening, get to spend ah spend the night, um watch the movie, do the thing with ah with my daughter, um who's 24. And I just, you when they're when they're that old, anytime they want to hang out, I i jump at the opportunity and really cool. But we're driving home.
00:16:49
Denis Tyrell
We're about 10 minutes from the house. I get this FaceTime call from her or she's like, where are you? I'm like, I don't know. I'm, um you know, tell her where I'm at. I'm like a couple minutes behind her um coming down the road. And she's like, I'm pulled over on the side of the road. I need you to kill the spider.
00:17:01
Denis Tyrell
And I'm like, what? Like, how does this, what do you mean? Like, she's like, there is a spider on the ceiling and it's going to kill me. And and and and we live out in the in the sticks. So she's on the side of this road.
00:17:13
Denis Tyrell
It's completely dark.
00:17:14
Tony C
You live in the sticks?
00:17:15
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah. I'm out Brentwood, man.
00:17:17
Denis Tyrell
There's my cornfields and yeah.
00:17:19
Tony C
Cornfields. You live in the cornfields, guy.
00:17:21
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. yeah So, um, well, city, city sticks. Yeah.
00:17:25
Denis Tyrell
Uh, but, uh, yeah, the, uh, so I, I, I pull up and, and, you know, and I gotta pretend to be dad.
00:17:25
Coy Baker
i was about to say.
00:17:33
Denis Tyrell
I'm definitely afraid of spiders. And I look and man, and, and I don't care what anybody says. um You know, the the fisherman hunter's story, like this thing was like, fuck, two feet and circumference on the body.
00:17:45
Denis Tyrell
It took up the entire ceiling of the thing. I don't know how it didn't just eat her and web her up
Origin of Hourglass Knives
00:17:51
Denis Tyrell
right there.
00:17:54
Denis Tyrell
But ah yeah, I, I, the, the best thing I could do is swat it with a, with a shoe. And then after I did all that, I was like, Oh my God, I'm going to have Tony on tomorrow and I'm going to to tell this story and he's going to fucking be mad at me. But yeah.
00:18:05
Denis Tyrell
So I wish I had that, the bravery to handle the, arachnist to the fly of the Taurus, whatever you just said.
00:18:12
Tony C
You just put out your hand and go like that and we'll crawl on you.
00:18:12
Coy Baker
Well, good on you.
00:18:15
Coy Baker
No, no, no, no. Good on you for protecting your daughter. Kudos to you, Jared.
00:18:20
Denis Tyrell
Thank you. Thank you. And I didn't scream like a bitch, which I was almost for sure I was going to hit It wasn't going to die. It was going to jump at me and I was going to be running down the cornfield.
00:18:31
Denis Tyrell
i Yeah, I think there's some in my beard here.
00:18:32
Tony C
but did it so it had a pretty big body.
00:18:33
Coy Baker
I don't know. we might We need to get your daughter on because I think we need to hear the other side of this story. I'm not sure that's the actual case.
00:18:37
Tony C
Exactly. i mean, there's a good chance it was pregnant. And when you squish it, a bunch of small eggs that you can't see went everywhere and they will.
00:18:47
Tony C
Yeah, they will. Oh, man.
00:18:50
Coy Baker
Great, Tony. Now i'm not going to be able to sleep tonight. Thank you. Jesus.
00:18:54
Tony C
You're very welcome.
00:18:55
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. But so he's an hourglass. He loves spiders and, uh, and I, and I killed him.
00:19:01
Coy Baker
There's the name.
00:19:03
Tony C
And that is ah that is where the name Hourglass Knives comes from.
00:19:07
Coy Baker
Oh, and speaking, i yeah when you started talking about the spiders, I realized that that is actually in your logo.
00:19:13
Coy Baker
And I never knew that until we cast it in powder in Damascus.
00:19:17
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's right.
00:19:17
Coy Baker
Remember when we did that couple years ago?
00:19:21
Coy Baker
And I had never really looked at your logo that closely until we did that. and then i was like, oh, there's actually spiders in there or spider webs.
00:19:29
Denis Tyrell
It's a web. Yeah. I think I have his hat on.
00:19:34
Coy Baker
As Tony digs through his entire shop. Oh, he's got it right there. Look at that.
00:19:39
Denis Tyrell
Oh, look at that.
00:19:43
Denis Tyrell
Forge that thing out, man. Come on.
00:19:47
Coy Baker
you You kind of mess it up if you force it out.
00:19:49
Tony C
I'm working on Bar of Damascus right now first.
00:19:52
Denis Tyrell
There you go.
00:19:54
Denis Tyrell
And now that's another thing too, is that, you know, when you're, when you're starting out, you're, You're doing the, yeah you know, am I a stock removal? Am I a bladesmith? Am I forging? Am I not?
00:20:04
Denis Tyrell
You know, and I think...
00:20:05
Tony C
I remember all of that shit. I was stressing out so bad because at that time, you know, I haven't seen it in a while and i also got her out of a lot of the beginner groups, but The amount of people that would stress about that and like, well, you're not really a knife maker because you're just, you know, st stock removal or you're doing this. It's like, oh, if you are buying a blank piece of steel with a bevel already ground and it's already sharp and you attach a handle, you're not a knife maker. You're in a ah handle attacher.
00:20:37
Tony C
That's all I got. Everything else, you are a knife maker. And you know and i I've done my forging. um i made a I made a hatchet actually for the director of and NSA 2009,
Shifts in Knife-Making Perceptions
00:20:51
Tony C
2020, I think it was. yeah i you know And i forged that out. I forged in, a I think, an ADCR V2 bit into this head. And it took me four or five times. of so darn hard.
00:21:00
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that's, yeah.
00:21:02
Coy Baker
You know, it is interesting how that's kind of shifted a little in the industry. You know you don't really get that hate from a lot of people anymore about, not hate, but that comment of, oh, you don't forge it.
00:21:13
Coy Baker
You're not ah you not a real knife maker whatever. The mindset has really shifted.
00:21:16
Tony C
No. yeah You don't get it from makers.
00:21:18
Coy Baker
We've fixed that.
00:21:20
Tony C
yeah i've I've heard it from potential customers. and you know They're like, oh, look at Knife. Oh, it's beautiful. This and that. and You forged this. I'm like, no, this is stock removal.
00:21:33
Denis Tyrell
That's good it's it's going to reflect in the price, right?
00:21:34
Tony C
You're charging me x amount of money for this?
00:21:35
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Absolutely.
00:21:37
Coy Baker
We call those ex-customers.
00:21:37
Tony C
But you know, you didn't put this, you didn't put heart into it, stuff like that. went Whoa, whoa i so i still put my heart into this thing. What are you talking about?
00:21:46
Tony C
So hold on real quick. Let me get a hammer. Boom.
00:21:49
Denis Tyrell
yeah Speaking of hammers, but, you know, if you're not if you're if you're not a stock removal guy and you want to do the hand forging stuff, but you got to go check out Frank Anita at Two Bastards, Smithy and Supply.
00:22:00
Denis Tyrell
They have the wonderful selection of fat peens available for you to pick one. They got the curved peen, which is still waiting, Frank. paging Dr. Frank, uh, get that curvy peen going, uh, but you can get your fat peen straight cross diagonal, um, whatever you need to get that, um, make sure you go check them out because ain't it grand.
00:22:23
Coy Baker
Ain't it grand to have a fat peen in your hand?
00:22:27
Denis Tyrell
It sure is buddy. That's it. Um, so
00:22:30
Coy Baker
I was going to say it with you, but then you stopped, but it's right.
00:22:32
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I don't know.
00:22:33
Denis Tyrell
I didn't want to be like, yeah we just did that weird, awkward bro shake, you know, where I fist bumped and you open it.
00:22:39
Coy Baker
Yeah, hand open palm thing.
00:22:39
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, yeah. It was, yeah that's that's the awkward ad read.
00:22:45
Denis Tyrell
But ah yeah, so go check out Frank Anita, Two Bastards, Smithian Supply. Get yourself a fat peen if that's what you're into. Or you can go and stock removal.
00:22:57
Denis Tyrell
I was going transition to something that wasn't going to work. So, yeah, yeah, there's that.
00:23:05
Denis Tyrell
This is silence.
00:23:06
Coy Baker
This is silence.
00:23:07
Denis Tyrell
This is silence.
00:23:08
Coy Baker
I knew where you were going with that, but it was going to be funny.
00:23:10
Denis Tyrell
It's a sad thing, but you know what? You may not be able to get the steel anymore, but if you're into whatever you need for your knife making supplies, you go check out Lawrence Lake at Maritime Knife Supply. He's got everything you need.
00:23:22
Denis Tyrell
Abrasives, equipment, tools. Thanks to Dennis Terrell. He's got that whole brand new folder assembly attachment special section for you to get your deal on.
00:23:34
Denis Tyrell
Lawrence is one of us. He's a maker. Um, if he can't find it, he'll do his damnness to track it down for you. Um, so, uh, go check out maritime knife supply and he's, he's got it. He's got it all.
00:23:47
Coy Baker
He's the best. Lawrence is the best.
00:23:49
Denis Tyrell
He's the man. He's the mayor travel around, uh, travel around the blade show.
00:23:51
Coy Baker
And if he doesn't if he doesn't have what you need.
00:23:56
Denis Tyrell
Travel around ah any kind of show with him. You'll find out, you know, we always, start so I always teasing Koi last time he was on that, you know, we all aspire to be Koi famous, but I think, I think Lawrence has got you beat.
00:24:08
Coy Baker
Lawrence does have me beat. That is true. That is true.
00:24:10
Denis Tyrell
That's for sure.
00:24:10
Coy Baker
And if he doesn't have what you need. Ask him about it and likely he will get it on the site within the week.
00:24:17
Coy Baker
He's good about that stuff. so
00:24:19
Denis Tyrell
Yep. Yep. Yep. Koi, what have been up to?
00:24:23
Coy Baker
folks show up Oh God. it's sir We were were in the final stages ah where but you we in the final stages of setting up that new power hammer.
00:24:34
Coy Baker
The Chambersburg 750.
00:24:36
Coy Baker
I did the math. It took us 14 months to install that machine.
00:24:43
Coy Baker
Yeah, that's it. that's it Yeah. So long process and thank God we're at the end of it because it's just, it's taken so long. It's drug out for so long.
00:24:54
Coy Baker
And we've really been needing to have this hammer up and running ah while ago. And so it's finally, it's finally up and running and listeners will be able to jump on the Baker Forge Instagram and see some video of us smashing wood and making, you know, a lot of toothpicks.
00:25:10
Coy Baker
And then today we actually finally forged steel under it for the first time. So yay, golf clap.
00:25:19
Coy Baker
um So that's what I've been up to. We just had last week, Tuesday and Wednesday, Chris Cash, Mountfellow Metalworks came down and he helped us set it up.
00:25:27
Denis Tyrell
Nice. Great dude.
00:25:28
Coy Baker
Oh, great dude. He's done so much to help us out. with everything in this shop.
00:25:33
Coy Baker
I mean, he's the power hammer guru and I've bought all of my machines from him, all my power hammers.
00:25:39
Coy Baker
And so he came down, help us set it up and helped us tune it. There's a lot that goes into tuning this thing, lot of valve adjustments and adjustments on all sorts of little bells and whistles on this thing to get it to run properly.
00:25:52
Coy Baker
Cause you, you gotta tune it and time the machine basically so that it's stroking at the proper time and it's touching off the valves
Coy Baker's Power Hammer Installation
00:26:00
Coy Baker
at the same time.
00:26:00
Coy Baker
yeah And you got to make sure it's lubed up.
00:26:01
Denis Tyrell
Oh, my God. Oh.
00:26:03
Coy Baker
Gosh, you got to run a lot of lube in it.
00:26:06
Tony C
It sounds like you have a job for me.
00:26:11
Tony C
Honey, we're moving.
00:26:11
Coy Baker
I need somebody to pour lube.
00:26:15
Coy Baker
Yeah, so that's what I've been up to. um But we are officially forged and stainless on the Chambersburg. I got to tell you, when you step up from 350-pound power hammer,
00:26:29
Coy Baker
where the ram is 350 pounds to 750, it feels like you're forging with like a Honda Civic. Like it's just, it's so much power.
00:26:40
Coy Baker
It's scary power. It is unreal how much material can move.
00:26:45
Coy Baker
And they made this style hammer up to 4,000 pound Rams. rams
00:26:50
Coy Baker
So I can't even imagine what those would be.
00:26:52
Coy Baker
This is actually the smallest they made in the high frame. So anyway, it's been, it's been a fun project and I can't believe, you know, you just mentioned earlier, Jared, that you've been to Tony's shop.
00:27:05
Coy Baker
He must be a better friend because you've never been to my shop.
00:27:05
Denis Tyrell
Yes. Mm-hmm. Yep.
00:27:09
Coy Baker
So otherwise you would have got to play.
00:27:09
Denis Tyrell
He invited me though.
00:27:12
Coy Baker
I, you know, that invitation was old. I don't, that's that probably out of date now.
00:27:14
Tony C
Wait, Jared, hold on. Jared, you made me steal, you said. I haven't gotten steal from you. I've gotten steal from Koi.
00:27:21
Denis Tyrell
You know, you're, you're right.
00:27:22
Denis Tyrell
And, and that is that is a hundred percent true. And i have still to this day have not located that fucking piece of Sanmai that is earmarked for him.
00:27:36
Denis Tyrell
I hid it from myself.
00:27:38
Coy Baker
Or Dennis picked it up and used it.
00:27:38
Denis Tyrell
We're going to rectify that. Yeah, of course. That old tag along just couldn't let me give something to somebody else. He has to be the main squeeze there.
00:27:45
Tony C
Damn. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, man.
00:27:49
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, that's the truth. But yeah, thanks for reminding me, fucker.
00:27:54
Tony C
Yeah, I think about it every day.
00:27:54
Coy Baker
So you you made him a bar of steel?
00:27:55
Tony C
I think about it every day.
00:27:58
Denis Tyrell
I did. Well, I mean, I made some steel and I was i asked him i would be honored if he would ah mess around with it and make something out of it.
00:28:06
Coy Baker
What are you trying to
00:28:06
Denis Tyrell
And then I never...
00:28:06
Tony C
I was going to make a poker with it, like a fire poker.
00:28:08
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. And then I never sent it.
00:28:10
Coy Baker
Looks like you're trying to hone in on my market here, buddy.
00:28:11
Denis Tyrell
So, but yeah, I was given it.
00:28:15
Coy Baker
he's he's not He's my buyer.
00:28:15
Tony C
Oh, yeah. Oh, he put brass shims in there.
00:28:18
Tony C
He put brass shims in there.
00:28:23
Denis Tyrell
Well, you know, when Dennis and I came up with the, yeah, when Dennis, I came up with Kuma, you know, yeah.
00:28:24
Tony C
So, the cool thing is, we're not heat treating the steel.
00:28:37
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's good stuff.
00:28:38
Tony C
Oh, goodness. I'll just sit back for this while listening to you guys.
00:28:41
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, this is great, man.
00:28:45
Denis Tyrell
Well, I guess, you know, there's a good a good transition to, you know, if you're not into to to making your own steel, um I know where you can go. You can go check out my boy, Coy Baker and his crew at Baker Forged and Tool.
00:28:57
Denis Tyrell
and They are the maker of all the premium and awesomeness of pattern welded everything. This week's drop is disturbed. Go my cushion.
00:29:09
Denis Tyrell

00:29:24
Denis Tyrell
You can also use the bigger forge and tool app for one day early access to the newest drops in

Denis Tyrell
And you can also take advantage of the line, you fuckers, of line of gator piss, the premium etch-ins for all your Damascus needs.
00:29:43
Denis Tyrell
They have the OG gator piss blend. Yes, that's the one. Gator Piss Heavy for darken out that 1080 or 80 CR-V2 and the Gator Piss Max for the stainless.
00:30:01
Denis Tyrell
Not done, not even nearly done. We also have the nano ceramic coating for protection of that beautiful.
00:30:09
Tony C
wait, there's more.
00:30:11
Denis Tyrell
ah Yes, but wait, there's more. You want to protect that steel.
00:30:13
Coy Baker
Keep it rolling.
00:30:14
Denis Tyrell
You can do that. Nano ceramic coating. you You could just, it just beats off, beats off all those water droplets.
00:30:20
Tony C
And if you call now, Jared will make you a knife with your purchase of nano ceramic.
00:30:23
Denis Tyrell
That's right. With your purchase. And you know what? And you can't just like go around and, you know, just dipping this shit into gator piss. You got to clean it first. So then you got to take advantage of the brand new Grime Reaper.
00:30:37
Denis Tyrell
the new, I don't know what ah the, it is a fantastic cleaner to prepare your steel for etching. um And you can load up all of those things in your cart and use the discount code, triple T10 for 10% off that purchase.
00:30:56
Coy Baker
There you go. Good job, Jerry.
00:30:58
Denis Tyrell
Woo. Holy mackerel.
00:30:59
Coy Baker
That was quite the ad read. All right. Now let me fix everything. So first off, Disturbed Goma was last week's drop.
00:31:03
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Tell the truth.
00:31:07
Coy Baker
Disturbed Goma was last week. This week is something else. And before I get into that, though, you mentioned Grime Reaper. ah This podcast comes out tomorrow, correct?
00:31:16
Denis Tyrell
That's correct.
Launch of Grime Reaper Product
00:31:18
Coy Baker
Well, then, yeah, tomorrow. So as the listeners are listening to this, Grime Reaper is officially launched to the public. and is available.
00:31:27
Denis Tyrell
Fantastic. Fantastic.
00:31:28
Coy Baker
Well, it comes out in the morning. So it launches today, Tuesday, around like 10ish Eastern Standard Time.
00:31:35
Tony C
It's Tuesday right now?
00:31:35
Coy Baker
So no, I'm talking as if they were listeners were listening to it.
00:31:38
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it is.
00:31:40
Denis Tyrell
If you Jason Knight time warp, yes, we're we're into tomorrow.
00:31:43
Tony C
Okay, I'm going to stay out of this.
00:31:47
Coy Baker
Grime Reaper is available for purchase.
00:31:49
Coy Baker
ah The esteemed ah podcast sponsors and whatnot, or podcast sponsor, got a brief ah intro into that but product ahead of time.
00:32:03
Coy Baker
I don't know if Jared's used any of it, probably not. um
00:32:06
Denis Tyrell
I have not yet.
00:32:06
Coy Baker
But have you sprayed the can at least and smelled it? It smells delicious.
00:32:11
Denis Tyrell
citrusy beauty.
00:32:13
Coy Baker
Oh, it's so good.
00:32:14
Coy Baker
Well, it's launched and it is available for purchase now at bangerforge.com forward slash Grime Reaper. um It's good stuff. i've been I've gone through so many cans of it already, just cleaning machines in the shop, cleaning the power hammer while we're working on it.
00:32:30
Coy Baker
it It just, it breaks down the stuff and the crud and grease just drips right off the machine.
00:32:35
Coy Baker
I love it. But the biggest biggest thing is it doesn't leave any residue. So did I go over the Grime Reaper last time I was on this show, Jared?
00:32:41
Denis Tyrell
No, you did not. Nope.
00:32:44
Denis Tyrell
Lay it on us.
00:32:44
Tony C
This is my first time hearing it, Koi. I am so sorry.
00:32:47
Tony C
i thought I'd stayed up to date.
00:32:48
Tony C
I'm super pumped to hear this because I am sick of smelling brake cleaner.
00:32:52
Coy Baker
that's because all you watch is hunting videos on Instagram. You need to cleanse your feed.
00:32:57
Denis Tyrell
This is some good shade here, bro.
00:32:58
Denis Tyrell
That normally comes my way, Tony.
00:33:01
Tony C
I appreciate that, Koi.
00:33:04
Coy Baker
anyway, yeah, Tony, you'll be able to buy a can of it for $14.99 tomorrow on the website, by the way. um So
00:33:16
Coy Baker
Anyway. my train
00:33:22
Denis Tyrell
Oh, dude. Tony, here he's laughing right now, so I'm just going to say it.
00:33:33
Denis Tyrell
One Thank Oh.
00:33:33
Coy Baker
and lost my train of thought
00:33:44
Coy Baker
Anyway, um big so we started down this path at the end of last year. um The government passed some regulation under the Toxic Control Substances Act and banned a couple of chemicals that are commonly used in stuff like brake cleaner.
00:34:02
Coy Baker
And it's a six month to three year phase out period where all those are gonna be phased out of both the commercial and ah residential market or consumer markets. And so brake cleaner recipes across the entire country about to change.
00:34:16
Coy Baker
And we've been recommending brake cleaner as a pre-clean for etching blades to make sure there's no residue left on the blade going into the acid. And unfortunately, we don't know what that's going to change to as far as their recipe. And it may start leaving residue.
00:34:31
Coy Baker
You never know. ah We haven't been able to test any of that yet because ah most of the companies out there making brake clean have not switched over just yet. They have three years to do it. but it's about to be phased out those certain chemicals and their long names i don't really remember what the names of those chemicals are but we quickly realized that the community was going to need a and a cleaner that we could recommend to people because we get asked literally every day what how do i clean my knives before etching it uh in gator piss or anything really
00:35:04
Coy Baker
And so we started working with a company who specializes in making these sorts of chemical aerosols and solvents. And we told them, and it was just it was huge blessing that they decided to actually work with us because it's a massive company, but they loved what we did. They looked us up, they researched us and they really just fell in love with our products and really wanted to jump on board. So we spent a bunch of time working with them, going back and forth on designing a solvent that would dissolve oils and greases and strip blades totally clean but also not leave any sort of residue that would be uh affecting the acid etch back and forth with them a whole bunch and we finally nailed down a product a solution and uh we had the name for it we've had the name for a while because we figured we were going to do this at some point grime reaper was always a name and uh yeah so
00:35:58
Coy Baker
We worked with them. We got the product here. We started testing it We test a whole bunch of different ones from them, but the final one was just perfect. I mean, they nailed it. The guys can literally just spray and in cut because we don't etch knives here, just in cuts here, but we spray an and in cut paper towel, quick wipe, and then dump it in the acid.
00:36:16
Coy Baker
And it's perfect. Every single time we send it out to guys tested, um, put it into knife makers hands for feedback.
00:36:23
Coy Baker
And it was a resounding, amazing result. No issues whatsoever. And so we're excited to bring it to market because it is, it works. It works beautifully. And it's 50 state compliant, which was another thing that we had to make sure that we had nailed down.
00:36:38
Coy Baker
cause there's a lot of makers in New York and California, which is the two most.
00:36:42
Tony C
i was going to say, does that 50 states include California?
00:36:46
Coy Baker
It does. It does. I had to include my California buddies in it.
00:36:49
Tony C
Oh, absolutely. No, I just want to make sure.
00:36:52
Denis Tyrell
So we're so, we're so grateful.
00:36:52
Coy Baker
Well, 50, 50, fifty
00:36:55
Coy Baker
50 states typically includes the 50th state, which is you know California.
00:37:00
Tony C
Okay. Okay. That makes...
00:37:04
Denis Tyrell
The good weather state.
00:37:04
Denis Tyrell
Yes, I get it. Yeah.
00:37:07
Coy Baker
So it had to be 50 state compliant. And California's got some weird laws around this sort of stuff. And so it's technically marketed as a blade solvent, a blade degreasing solvent. But of course you can degrease anything metal or whatever with it.
00:37:24
Coy Baker
It works great. We use it for just cleaning machines and stuff here. But as far as the official marketing on the website and the listings, it is a blade degreasing solvent because California is picky as hell.
00:37:38
Coy Baker
So we had spend a lot of time going back and forth with attorneys on that to make sure we didn't catch six figure fines from California. So Thank you, chair Jared, for your state and your contribution to that.
00:37:52
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah. Anything I can do to, uh, you know, yes.
00:37:56
Denis Tyrell
That's moment of silence for all of my service to this venture.
00:38:04
Denis Tyrell
Triple T 10 for 10% off.
00:38:07
Coy Baker
There you go There you go We're selling it in single cans and six ah cases of six. We'll eventually do cases 12, but. cases of sixes and singles for now.
00:38:19
Denis Tyrell
That's like a lifetime supply for a guy like me and Tony.
00:38:23
Tony C
Whoa, whoa. I even go through more than that.
00:38:25
Tony C
Okay, you know, it might last me for half a lifetime.
00:38:26
Coy Baker
Yeah, so that's what's up
00:38:31
Denis Tyrell
Okay. Half. Fair enough.
00:38:35
Denis Tyrell
Cool. Um, I, yeah.
00:38:36
Coy Baker
with me. That's what's up with me
00:38:40
Denis Tyrell
It's stainless.
00:38:41
Denis Tyrell
with The, the, the update is
00:38:43
Coy Baker
It's in production, baby. It's in production.
Baker Forge's Stainless Steel Focus
00:38:47
Denis Tyrell
availability.
00:38:49
Coy Baker
Soon. Very, very soon. i don't know if it's officially on the drop schedule yet. um The batch isn't, the first batch isn't completely done, but we are already on the second batch. The initial forging's have already begun.
00:39:01
Coy Baker
So there's two patterns in development already, and one is really close to being done. then it's going to go on the drop schedule, probably going to be early November. because we've already got a couple of batches in the in the pipe so oh yeah
00:39:13
Denis Tyrell
Well, congratulations, man. I know that has been a, a hell of a journey, a long time, lot of hard work.
00:39:15
Tony C
That's awesome, man.
00:39:20
Denis Tyrell
And we're all very happy to hear that and excited to grab a piece of that. Good stuff.
00:39:28
Coy Baker
yeah and once that batch is done I may just get a wild hair and up and drop it like in the middle of the week randomly and just make a big scene all over Instagram
00:39:37
Denis Tyrell
That'd be cool.
00:39:39
Coy Baker
I've been known to do it.
00:39:39
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah, for sure.
00:39:42
Coy Baker
And so the market, so the listeners understand our stainless is a performance stainless. So that meaning we have very specific alloys we use and all the alloys we're using are all hardenable.
00:39:55
Coy Baker
Most of the stainless made in in the U S actually is comprised of 304 and then then another carbon or martyricite stainless and 304 is not hardening.
00:40:06
Coy Baker
It, you know, quote unquote, absorb some carbon from the other steel, but and not really enough in my opinion and metallurgist opinions. So ours is a true performance stainless um of ABL 154 cm.
00:40:21
Coy Baker
So there is a distinction there. We're going to make sure we push that distinction. it is straight up performance and none of the cheap 302 302 is added.
00:40:32
Coy Baker
For those that don't know, it's added to the stainless for the bright color. And because it's cheap, it's a lot cheaper to put into the stainless and the stainless goes a lot further that way. But that's cutting a corner in our opinion.
00:40:46
Coy Baker
So we don't do it.
00:40:50
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. And thank you for listening to the Triple T.
00:40:55
Coy Baker
And that's a wrap.
00:40:56
Denis Tyrell
And that's a wrap.
00:40:57
Tony C
Koi Baker, bigger porch.
00:40:58
Denis Tyrell
Koi Baker. Yeah. Well, shit, man. that's That's a whole bunch of frigging awesomeness. um What the hell is that? I sold a knife on Saturday. Yeah.
00:41:09
Denis Tyrell
That means I made one.
00:41:11
Denis Tyrell
One. And yeah.
00:41:13
Coy Baker
To your brother?
00:41:14
Denis Tyrell
And and i sold it.
00:41:18
Denis Tyrell
No, I gave him one. that was the stupidest thing i ever did.
00:41:21
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, probably the the the most expensive knife I probably ever could have tried to get off as I gave as a gift. But that's, you know, whatever. Yeah, no. and And it's funny you say that to the brother. But, you know, when where I'm at still, I still have the friends and family wait list type thing going on. I haven't busted through all of that stuff yet because i we had a mini family reunion on ah Saturday.
00:41:50
Denis Tyrell
um And, uh, just about 15 of us kind of got together that, uh, you the sad part is, you know, everybody gets busy with life and you're, everybody's moving and shaking. Um, and then it takes an unfortunate event or, you know, something, you know, bad to happen where you, you find your, I, my family, we find ourselves getting together. And, uh, my cousin gratefully kind of just reached out to everybody and was like, Hey, let's just get together. go do this. We always hang out in a certain place here. And, um,
00:42:19
Denis Tyrell
San Juan Bautista, Tony, i don't know if you know that's a little mission over there by Hollister.
00:42:23
Denis Tyrell
And ah we got there and got to hang out, just had a had a great morning. And i i brought a couple of things. And you know, it was that that moment where I was this whole, like, I still have a lot of people that, you know, they're like, Hey, where's mine?
00:42:37
Denis Tyrell
And where's mine? I'm just like, you know, that's, it's, it's hard because, you know, they take time. i have, you know, full, full life and all that crap. But, um, and my uncle has been after me for a while and he was like, uh, I said, this is, yeah, here's your opportunity.
00:42:51
Denis Tyrell
You're going miss it. If not. So, um, you know, but it's always good to, to, to go through that experience and get it. it may, it, it makes me feel, um there's nothing like, uh, something that you do in making as, as a newer maker.
00:43:07
Denis Tyrell
Like I always joke that I, I never made anything prior to to doing knives. Uh, so it's still ah shocking to me when somebody actually wants something or has interest, I should say in anything that, that I'm doing, uh, you know, that imposter syndrome is, is definitely a real thing for me.
00:43:22
Denis Tyrell
So that was really cool. Um, and obviously cool to see everybody and hang out. Um, but the, uh, The heat is finally going away. I think we had a couple days last week. we were, you know, 102 for, I think, three days of last week.
00:43:38
Denis Tyrell
Still. Yeah, it's still...
00:43:39
Tony C
I forget California gets like that.
00:43:42
Denis Tyrell
Uh, and it was late this year. it didn't really hit until like the end of August and pretty much all of September was just fucking roasting. But, uh, so we're finally calming down, uh, and getting back in the, back in the shop. I just posted a ah real one, Brent and, uh, and Dennis were over here at the shop and i was putting them to work. They were ah with this whole hand sanding assembly line going on.
00:44:03
Denis Tyrell
Uh, but you know, it's good, uh, to, to finally be getting back at it. Um, And feeling productive and motivated to do some things. And then, you know, you you move a piece and you're like, all right, this is this is good.
00:44:16
Denis Tyrell
i remember why I started doing this um
00:44:19
Coy Baker
So was the sale somebody on Instagram? Where was the buyer?
00:44:22
Denis Tyrell
this. It was a family member at that reunion.
00:44:24
Coy Baker
Oh, it was. Okay.
00:44:26
Denis Tyrell
That's what I was saying. You know, you still have that, you know, that those friends and family people I haven't yet kind of ran through that whole thing.
00:44:33
Denis Tyrell
I'm sure that's and a natural
Tony's Passion for Knife-Making
00:44:35
Denis Tyrell
progression for most people. you know, your family, friends, everybody really want to support. um So.
00:44:40
Tony C
And i think I think it makes you a lot more comfortable to start selling to the to the general public.
00:44:45
Tony C
I remember my first knife, you know, my first couple, of few knives were just friends and family. You know, they'd they'd buy a knife from me and when I was finally ready to sell to the general public, I was so freaking nervous and I had a lot of people who wanted buy from me. I was like, I am not ready for this.
00:45:00
Tony C
And I think it was my first first set of – I had made two stainless knives before, CPM 154, one of my favorite stainless steels. And I was putting the edge on. And the way i used to – used to heat treat.
00:45:15
Tony C
And then i would like, i would grind my bevels in and then I would put my edge on I wouldn't sharpen it fully, but I would go to like 220 because I, I did it like this weird, I did so much stuff that is so weird.
00:45:29
Tony C
I still do like Jared.
00:45:30
Tony C
I'm sorry. Some of the way I i make knives, it's just like, what is this guy doing? And, um, anyways,
00:45:37
Tony C
I screwed up the edge. I put like, I mean, i want to say like a quarter inch secondary bevel on these knives. It was so bad. And I was just like, oh my gosh, no, no, no. And so I had to call them and like, hey, I got make you guys new knives. I stayed up all night and reheat treated, cryogenically did them. I did everything and started grinding on the next day. And it was just so stressful. And when i when they got them, they went, oh, it's perfect. Oh, this that. And I'm like, oh, is it?
00:46:05
Denis Tyrell
I know the feeling, man. It's like, okay.
00:46:08
Tony C
it's, it's, yeah, I mean, to this day, I mean, I still like, I, I actually just, I started making knives again recently too. I'm, I'm a lot more quiet about it now because I'm trying to find that, that, that meditation to it, that, that calmness I used to find making knives.
00:46:24
Tony C
And, um, you know, so I've been making them and I'll post some things every once while, but also social media is just so damn much. You have to keep up on. And I just, I don't have the time. And, um, You know, it was, it was really fun making this knife and, uh, but it was just so weird again. I, be you know, it was just that nice little stainless chef and gosh, it was so damn hard.
00:46:44
Tony C
And I was just like, I would have to put it down a walkway. Cause I'm like, Oh, I forgot how to do this or, or whatever it is. So I don't, for me that, that feeling never goes away. It's always a little nerve wracking making knives for people.
00:46:55
Coy Baker
So do you take orders, Tony, or do you just make and then post it and sell it? Like what's your process there?
00:47:02
Tony C
Um, it's, you know, and it's changed, you know, for a while it was taking a lot of orders. My books were full. Um, after, after Lindsay passed away, um, I, I became a full-time knife maker in Idaho and, um, that was my, that was my income. And um a big part of that was to stay at home for the girls.
00:47:20
Tony C
Um, and also just me being able to clear my mind and stuff.
00:47:23
Tony C
And so I really dove into it then. and um You know, I had a bunch of people on my books and then i moved to Colorado and i had another baby and just life, life just happens.
00:47:38
Tony C
And, um and I, I, I think when I stopped pushing so much knives, you stopped getting orders, at least for that, for me. um i would say I still get an order about once a month, just randomly, you know, somebody comes across my stuff and they want to order a knife and,
00:47:54
Tony C
I am still taking orders. i just don't put it out there as much because i like making knives because I love making knives. i I hate making knives because I have to make knives.
00:48:06
Tony C
um And I think that's a big part of these last two years where I've really slowed down on the knife making, slowed down on social media.
00:48:13
Tony C
It's because i my love for knives, I fell out of love with knives. Um, you know, we were talking earlier. I did. I hit some great milestones. I got a call and I got one of my knives on the cover of Blade magazine. Uh, that was something I never thought possible. I got a two page spread twice in Blade magazine about my work and about my shop and stuff. And, um,
00:48:32
Coy Baker
And who got you on the cover?
00:48:37
Coy Baker
Like, you who who photos got you on the cover?
00:48:43
Tony C
but the The first cover was someone else who's not taking pictures anymore, but it was some Koi Baker steel. And it was, you know, it's funny. It's one of those times I was like, oh, I don't really feel comfortable about that one, you know, but customer was really happy with it. I loved it. I was just like, man, I've seen myself do better. And that's the one that made the freaking cover.
00:49:05
Tony C
And, you know, and so I was talking to Jordan with JB Blades and I was like, man, you know, it could have been a bad knife. He's like, Tony, one of your knives made the cover, you know, stop bitching. And I was like, yeah, ah that is true.
00:49:17
Coy Baker
There's so many makers out there who will never make the cover, you know, it's a great honor.
00:49:20
Tony C
amazing makers. And I mean, and that's, that's part of it. I want to be like, dude, I am not worthy of that because there's so many amazing makers out there. But one of the things that caught and Steve caught this one was just, and it's my own Suki and I know it's not a traditional home Suki and how I do it. And that's what I do. I take traditional, I like traditional Japanese style kitchen knives and I put my own spin on it. I put my weird handles where there's nothing straight on it and, and I do my own thing and that caught the attention of it.
00:49:49
Denis Tyrell
I think that's one of, one of my favorite things about your, your work.
00:49:52
Denis Tyrell
I mean, i the it's, the it's the handle work, the, the, the, the selection of material, um, the, the curves, the thing I remember, you've kind of taken me through that.
00:50:03
Denis Tyrell
Um, and it is just, uh, beautifully compliments all, all the things that you do.
00:50:07
Denis Tyrell
And it is, I just saw you post, uh, something here the last couple of days and I looked at it and I was like, Oh man, I miss, I miss, I miss seeing those things, man.
00:50:17
Denis Tyrell
It's chingareras. Yeah.
00:50:19
Tony C
The seven inch chingadera?
00:50:20
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. That's the one.
00:50:22
Tony C
Yeah. Yeah, so this is one i just made.
00:50:23
Coy Baker
See, in you know you know a knife when you see a Tony knife.
00:50:24
Tony C
Yeah, and it's CPM 154 with some beautiful koa and some lime green runners.
00:50:31
Coy Baker
like i It's so iconic. When it pops up, you know exactly who made it. And that's that's what people struggle to grasp and to grab in the making of knives and the marketing of your work is that standout.
00:50:44
Tony C
ah um but Absolutely. And I remember struggling with that for a little little bit. And I went to go visit a um a friend and somebody I looked up to, you know Spencer over in Texas. And you know we he just showed me different things. and I'd been watching his work and other people's work and it's For me as a knife maker, I can't say that I just make all this stuff on my own. This is multiple ideas from everywhere. um I hear some makers that say, oh, this is fully original. And that's awesome. i I don't think any of this is original for me. It's just multiple things from different different areas put into one thing. And
00:51:20
Tony C
and trying different stuff. And I was talking to Koi right before we started this. I remember, i think it was one of my first like chef tokus I did or something like that. It was like a sand toku and a chef style knife. So sand toku is typically, it's not going to have a big rock, whereas a chef will have a little bit more rock towards the edge.
00:51:36
Tony C
And I did that design and with my weird handle. And I remember posting it in a, a higher end chef's knife group or something like that. And just ah a few makers were just like, hey, you can't do that with your your handles. You know, you chef's knives are supposed to look like this.
00:51:55
Tony C
And I was just like, I can understand that, but I just want to try something different. And the chefs that I talk to and I do sell to, i mean, if you're holding and a knife, I mean, most chefs aren't, you know, full hammer grip in that knife.
00:52:07
Tony C
They're pinch grip and they're finger forward. There's so many different ways. So a lot of times the handle,
00:52:14
Tony C
Doesn't matter as much. It's more of a balancing and depending, making sure there's no hotspots, of course, and everything.
00:52:20
Tony C
um And again, I just want to try something new. and i think that's the biggest thing when you're making knives, just try what you want, regardless of what anybody says. Um,
00:52:30
Tony C
You know, and that's the funnest thing about beginning and making knives.
00:52:33
Tony C
You're just, you're figuring things out. You're trying different things. You're trying some weird ass fantasy swords or whatever. And it's like, it might not be plausible, but it's so damn fun. And I think that's what, what builds up the the character you and you, and it continues with your, your knife career.
00:52:50
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I think i was just gonna say that, you know, I think people lack the ability to give them permission to
00:52:50
Coy Baker
And I'll ahead.
00:52:58
Denis Tyrell
to be different. And I struggle with that or to try new things or think what's cool. You know, I always bust Dennis's balls about, you know, like, I was like, I should put three pins in here. No, that's stupid.
00:53:08
Denis Tyrell
You know, blah, blah, blah, blah. And I'll bust his balls about like, you know, that you can't say that stupid, bro. Like that could be somebody's thing. Like, you know, but it's, it's, it's the ability to, to understand that, especially when when you're newer, you're, you're,
00:53:22
Denis Tyrell
everything you do, there's something you're going to emulate subconsciously. Like it's going you're, you're, when you put it side by side next to something, some, there's always going to be similarities and just having the ability to, to give yourself permission to, to go through that process.
00:53:35
Denis Tyrell
And, uh, um, I totally got sidetracked there, uh, is, is freeing, you know, and if you can get to that point, uh, that's, I think where you get to grow and and develop your own identity.
00:53:47
Coy Baker
hundred percent And if you're out there grinding handles, Jared, what grinder would you recommend that they use?
00:53:56
Denis Tyrell
I would definitely run with the Ameribade 2x72 Fastback. Awesome machine. Full go-getter.
00:54:07
Denis Tyrell
We also have ah the HyperDisk for the multi-tool a unit that can do all kinds of things. One of the things things i I'm, ah Tony's finishing of handles ah is is really awesome. And he, I'm not gonna bust you out here. There's no secrets really, but you know, the variable speed buffer ah was something that kind of,
00:54:34
Denis Tyrell
blew my mind and it is still one of the most dangerous machines there. But I think that that's one of the awesome deals about the hyper disk is, you know, there's so many attachments to it, but you can basically get yourself at a variable speed buffing system with that along with the the disc grinders and the um and multiple.
00:54:53
Coy Baker
and it's really quick quick attach I mean it's it's fast to change tooling out with that setup they did a really good job i and you can look at that and really
00:55:02
Coy Baker
see that Eric and Kevin engineers at heart. You know, they come with a background of understanding the product from a usability standpoint in a shop.
00:55:07
Denis Tyrell
That's right.
00:55:13
Coy Baker
You know, I visited those guys out there. I saw their operations. These guys build the best grinder. That's why Baker Forge only uses the Mary Braids and has from day one.
00:55:23
Denis Tyrell
that's right
00:55:24
Coy Baker
And those guys are great to work with. So highly recommend.
00:55:26
Denis Tyrell
yeah Yeah. So if you're in the market for a new grinder, go check out Ameribraid and the Fastback 2x72. And while you're at it, go dump a Hyperdisk in the cart too, because we're all balling, right? I mean, that's just how we do it.
00:55:39
Denis Tyrell
I mean, I'm doing it right now. I'm going to get another one. um
00:55:44
Coy Baker
Buy once, cry once.
00:55:46
Denis Tyrell
That's right. For sure.
00:55:47
Tony C
That is true. That is very true.
Blade Show Memories
00:55:50
Coy Baker
Yeah. Oh, man. ah Let's see.
00:55:54
Coy Baker
i wanted to tell this story. I mentioned it earlier before we started recording, but I wanted to jump back to it with Tony and his handles. ah First time I met Tony. in person was at a blade show and I'm striking a ah gap. I don't remember. Was it Texas or Utah?
00:56:10
Coy Baker
Can you remember?
00:56:11
Tony C
That was in person.
00:56:11
Tony C
Yes, it was Utah. Yes. is you yeah
00:56:14
Coy Baker
Perfect. Yes. And I had my wife with me and he walks up to the group. And when I say the group, that's me, my wife, Grayson from gray blades, JB, Jordan from JB blades.
00:56:27
Coy Baker
I think Charlie may have been there. Kyle sharky.
00:56:29
Tony C
Tyler was there, yep.
00:56:31
Coy Baker
Yeah. And you walk up, You know, everybody's hugging and whatnot. And then you pull out your knife and all these guys had never really met Tony or held one of his knives before. And they start passing around the knife and my wife gets her hands on it and she her face just lights up.
00:56:46
Coy Baker
She's like she turns to me and goes, this is the most comfortable handle I've ever held on a knife.
00:56:52
Coy Baker
And to this day, she compares every single chef's knife she holds from other custom makers around the world. to his handle and none of them stand up to the handle. She's like, I just, I can't get over how well that one felt. And I don't get that feeling back with all these other knives.
00:57:10
Coy Baker
It's not a Tony.
00:57:11
Tony C
And I gotta to make her a knife now. Jeez, son of a gun.
00:57:14
Coy Baker
No, no, no, that's not what I'm going.
00:57:15
Denis Tyrell
that ist that what That was slick, Coy, my dude.
00:57:16
Coy Baker
I'm not trying to get a knife here. on
00:57:19
Denis Tyrell
What did you tell me? Just ask.
00:57:22
Tony C
riptite Riptide Ultra? Why, who's that? Oh, Baker Forge and Tool?
00:57:27
Coy Baker
I'll send you a bar Tony.
00:57:31
Tony C
No, i I truly appreciate that. that ah That means a lot. I always love hearing and stuff like that. And it's... ah It's hard to take it I don't know. it It is hard when, when positive things start getting said about your knives and, and, um, your work blows up in a way. Um, it's, it's a lot to take in and it's, uh, man for so long, it's like, ah, shut up. Yeah, they suck. And it's like, no, finally it's like, thank you very much. You know, it does feel really good because I truly do put my heart and soul in these. And, um, fuck, I know by God,
00:58:03
Tony C
by no means are they perfect, you know, but I, I try my damnedest and, um, I love the guys that I've met in this thing because I can show my knife and they give me shit about it. And, um, and great feedback at the same time.
00:58:15
Coy Baker
Yeah, for sure.
00:58:17
Coy Baker
And there was a lot of shit being thrown around in that group. There always is.
00:58:21
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's, yeah, that's, that's not, that's not the the little boys club there.
00:58:25
Denis Tyrell
You damn scooter bandits. I remember that was the one thing about that show.
00:58:29
Denis Tyrell
This little scooter gang running around ah the streets of downtown Utah all over the place.
00:58:35
Tony C
Thank God I didn't get arrested.
00:58:35
Coy Baker
I'm pretty sure that was the year Grayson broke his foot, wasn't it?
00:58:39
Tony C
It was. It was. i remember the night. That's when we were actually all traveling up to the, ah was it the cast state capitol building?
00:58:47
Coy Baker
The capital, the state capital, yeah.
00:58:49
Tony C
Yeah, we went up that big hill and then we got to drive down. he was doing something.
00:58:53
Coy Baker
He's goofing off, broke his foot, Bladeshow in Utah.
00:58:53
Tony C
I don't know, man.
00:58:59
Coy Baker
He limped his way into a first-class ticket on the way home, too, because he just hobbled into the airport and they gave him a first-class seat.
00:59:06
Tony C
Yeah, we had to stop and go get him crutches.
00:59:07
Coy Baker
Son of a bitch.
00:59:11
Tony C
JB Grayson, thanks for letting me crash on your S floor instead of my truck. Appreciate it.
00:59:16
Denis Tyrell
That's awesome. So Tony, what is your, uh, what is the exact, uh, process you use to he treat a EBL?
00:59:24
Tony C
Oh, ABL. So, first of all. Oh, fuck. That
00:59:33
Denis Tyrell
Oh, that's beautiful.
00:59:34
Tony C
Well, you know, I would have to look up my heat treat schedule for AEBL.
00:59:35
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. Yeah. yeah yeah That's why you bring that up.
00:59:39
Denis Tyrell
But if you are in the market for a new heat treat oven, make sure you go check out heat even heat kilns makers of the best knife treating knife heat treating kilns around.
00:59:50
Denis Tyrell
They're a family owned on operated companies since 1948 building the highest quality knife heat treat ovens around and I'm looking at one right now.
00:59:59
Tony C
I will tell you, dealing with Even Heat for since 2018 when I brought my first kiln, they've been absolutely amazing.
01:00:07
Tony C
I got the old KF-18. Didn't have the heat guard, didn't have the stand. I talked to a guy a year later, and he sent it to me for free with some other stuff, and I love mine. I got the Ramp Master. um I didn't get the nice fancy tap, but i I've never had to complain about my Even Heat. Absolutely love it.
01:00:25
Denis Tyrell
For sure. and And you will too. So go check out Even Heat Kilns. Maritime Knife Supply has them. They also have Baker Forge and Tool among a handful of our ah other sponsors. Because if you're going to heat you're going to protect one of those beautiful handles, you got to go check out Travis Haynes of Pelican Paste, maker of ah the premium Pelican Paste wax. They got hard wax, soft wax, Pelican oil, hand saw, soap, and the all new, I guess it's a little...
01:00:54
Denis Tyrell
not new now, but ah the ah locked in cast iron seasoning, butternut. um Again, you could use a discount code triple T 10 for 10% off and tell them the boys at the triple T. So what's up for sure.
01:01:09
Coy Baker
And Jared, something, and no shade to the even heat guys, but what is something they should never put in an even heat oven ever?
01:01:19
Coy Baker
Grip X. Don't ever put that in the oven.
01:01:21
Denis Tyrell
That's right. That'll cook it for sure.
01:01:24
Coy Baker
That'll cook it and to make it a gooey mess.
01:01:27
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, absolutely. But you can put grip tech grip X on your handles, uh, for some, I mean, if you're not doing it, i don't know what
01:01:35
Coy Baker
Absolutely. And you should.
GripTech Composites Promotion
01:01:39
Denis Tyrell
you're doing.
01:01:39
Denis Tyrell
Uh, we should just end this right now, but, uh, yeah, go check out grip tech composites, uh, grip tech official on IG, the makers of grip X, formerly grip tech, um, the, the grippiest of all grippy things around.
01:01:54
Denis Tyrell
and they also have a grip X 3d, uh, the limitless color, ah supply for higher finishing abilities on and still get the same grip feel on it.
01:02:05
Denis Tyrell
um He's just, Matt's just coming back from the ah Twin Cities Knife Show. i haven't checked in with him to see how that went, but I'm sure he slayed it like he did at a blade show and everywhere else he goes. But yeah, go check out ah Grip Tech Composites and use the discount code TTT10 for 10% off.
01:02:22
Coy Baker
yeah Yep. Best handle material out there. ah Tony, you ever used any grip tech?
01:02:26
Tony C
I have not yet. I have seen it though. And this is since I've slowed down in the knife industry, I see that this has popped up lot lately. So yeah.
01:02:34
Coy Baker
It has. It's catching on quite a bit. And it's, I mean, it's pretty affordable stuff. you should You should snag some just to play with, see what you think. it's ah if you Once you put it on the knife, you can actually sandblast it to reveal more of the grit in it.
01:02:47
Coy Baker
And you can make the texture of the handle material more and more grippy, depending on how much grip you want.
01:02:52
Coy Baker
just by sandblasting it. Very cool. It's a resin rubber hybrid.
01:02:57
Denis Tyrell
So it's ah it's a really cool alternative to the
01:03:01
Denis Tyrell
the the stabilized woods. And you still get some functionality as well as some really great finish ability, especially when you use ah the Pelican oil.
01:03:12
Denis Tyrell
That'll make that sandblasted finish pop really nice too. Or you can run with that Limitless brand and you can really take it up.
01:03:19
Denis Tyrell
it was a trip, Tony. you First time I was using it, was trying to finish and I'm getting hand sanded and I'm like 120, 220 off the grinder. And then go to 400 and it starts getting and it starts getting stickier and starts like, you know, like smearing around. And I'm like, what the fuck is going on?
01:03:35
Denis Tyrell
Obviously a guy like me doesn't read instructions, but, so I make a fucking couple of calls and they're like, yeah, man, you get, you gotta, you gotta to stop. I'm like, Whoa, this goes against every, you know, thing I've been taught is to, you know, hand sand to high finish and buff and do all that.
01:03:49
Denis Tyrell
Uh, not the case with, uh, with grip deck or grip X, you can, uh, stop there, sandblast. And then, uh, When you're done, you've got this real nice grip a composite material, and it's really cool.
01:04:01
Denis Tyrell
A little Pelican oil on there, and it'll come out real nice.
01:04:05
Coy Baker
it It is going to be on the industry standard handle material.
01:04:09
Coy Baker
I mean, yeah, it's well on its way.
01:04:09
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. It's good stuff. Yeah.
01:04:13
Coy Baker
There's some really big people jumping on with that. Some really big brands jumping on with that. So there's a lot to come out of GripX or GripTech composites in in the next few years.
01:04:25
Denis Tyrell
Yep. Absolutely. Cool. Well, uh, who do you guys got for a maker spotlight?
Grayson Weltik's Craftsmanship
01:04:32
Coy Baker
Tony, you want to go first? Oh, okay.
01:04:35
Denis Tyrell
Do it. Tony.
01:04:36
Tony C
You know, so i've been out I've been out the knife game a little bit. Like Koi said, I like watching my hunting videos, my fishing videos.
01:04:41
Denis Tyrell
That's right
01:04:42
Tony C
um But I got to say, I'm just loving Grayson's work. Gray, dude, I just, ever since he started these little pocket tantas and stuff, man, everything you do, i absolutely love it, bud.
01:04:54
Tony C
Yeah, I got to say Grayson, man. Just love seeing his stuff.
01:04:57
Coy Baker
He doesn't listen. He doesn't listen the show, so you can stop talking to him and just talk about him.
01:05:01
Tony C
Okay, good. Yeah, fuck him. God, man, I'm so sick of seeing his shit.
01:05:02
Denis Tyrell
yeah yeah yeah and all that fucking tacky japanese shit he's putting out all the time there yeah you should well we'll tag yeah we'll tag him in this one he may you jump in for a special uh guest listen but uh when i said uh you know who you pick he's oh grayson i was all them all that tacky japanese shit bro that tony's face was like oh fuck dude like
01:05:08
Tony C
Oh, goodness gracious. That's not a walkie. Can we somebody tell the guy?
01:05:26
Denis Tyrell
That was priceless. I loved it.
01:05:29
Denis Tyrell
it was It was pretty good.
01:05:30
Denis Tyrell
But ah for those that may not be know exactly who he's talking about, he's talking about, is it Weltik?
01:05:39
Coy Baker
Yes, Grayson Weltik.
01:05:39
Denis Tyrell
Is it his last name?
01:05:41
Denis Tyrell
Weltik? Yeah, Grayson Weltik.
01:05:42
Denis Tyrell
ah That's gray.blades on Instagram. ah He has 5,611 followers. And like Tony said, just really awesome stuff and a ah fantastic maker.
01:05:54
Denis Tyrell
So make sure you go give him a follow.
01:05:55
Tony C
Fit and finish. Oh, goodness. The amount of tips I've gotten from him and Gator Piss.
01:06:00
Tony C
And I mean, Coy was there with the Gator Piss and just all the different stuff and just people laughing because hours and hours on the phone and trying this and trying that.
01:06:11
Tony C
um man, it was good times. Yeah, I got a lot of love for Gray.
01:06:14
Coy Baker
It was good times.
01:06:15
Coy Baker
Oh, he's, he's my boy.
01:06:16
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. He's one of the only people that I've ever heard said that they he truly enjoys the fit and finish process. That's like, that's his jam. He said, and I was like, well, for sure.
01:06:25
Coy Baker
Well, it shows, it shows in his finishes.
01:06:26
Tony C
It shows, absolutely.
01:06:29
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, really cool.
01:06:29
Denis Tyrell
Oh, really cool
01:06:30
Coy Baker
We had just actually this morning shipped out his walk or as big, uh, it's a Chinese wakazashi. I don't know what you call it. It had some specific name. I i forget the name. Sorry, Grayson.
01:06:42
Coy Baker
Yeah, that's it. What he said. and ah He's been working on this build for quite a while. We made the steel for it. It's a custom mosaic blade, a very, very long one.
01:06:52
Coy Baker
And it has eight plug welds in it. And each plug weld is a different mosaic pattern.
01:06:58
Coy Baker
And that was a huge undertaking to make that steel.
01:07:02
Coy Baker
And I almost fucked it up like three times and actually sent it to him with the, hey, this may not work. There's some, there's some issues that I can, I mean, they didn't come out all the way on the Blanchard grinder and he's going to hog a lot of material off. I was like, bro, it may not work.
01:07:19
Coy Baker
I don't know, but it was a will try once. And if it doesn't make it like that, can't remake those mosaic components. They were steps in different builds throughout the years.
Grayson Weltik's Complex Project
01:07:30
Coy Baker
And so it was kind of like a, a once, like it's only gonna happen once and, He made it work. It came out beautiful. Um, yeah, fit and finish just drop dead gorgeous.
01:07:43
Coy Baker
I mean, I could see myself in his 15 and 20 in that Damascus.
01:07:47
Coy Baker
So it was insane.
01:07:48
Denis Tyrell
Really cool.
01:07:49
Denis Tyrell
All right, Cole, who do you got?
01:07:53
Coy Baker
I've got Mount Phillip metal works. That's Chris cash. I mentioned him earlier in the show, but I'm going mention him again as my shout out. Um, Instagram is Mount underscore Phillip underscore metal underscore works.
01:08:07
Coy Baker
And he is a tool guy, so he doesn't make any knives, but he restores old tools and machines, uh, more specifically lots of blacksmithing tools and power hammers and such.
01:08:19
Coy Baker
He's my power hammer guy. I've bought power hammers from him for years and a lot of other tools, but he's just one of those down to earth guys who give you the shirt off his back. Um,
01:08:29
Coy Baker
Love him. He drives down. It's like a six hour drive. And he drove down here just so that he could help us turn the power hammer on and make sure the valving was timed correct. And we spent, yeah, the stroke and lube it.
01:08:39
Denis Tyrell
Stroking little bit. Yeah.
01:08:42
Coy Baker
We spent 16 hours that day to 3 a.m.
01:08:44
Tony C
That was my fucking
01:08:46
Coy Baker
in the morning working on that. And he just dedicates his time to so helping others. And so shout out to Chris. Great guy. um He's actually does have a, he's got a podcast podcast.
01:08:58
Coy Baker
as well called the Axe and Iron Podcast.
01:09:00
Coy Baker
And I don't think they put out an episode in like forever.
01:09:04
Coy Baker
So I don't know if they're still doing it, but he does have a podcast that he does with, oh boy. ah Shoot. Who does he do the podcast with, Jared?
01:09:12
Denis Tyrell
I have not heard of shoot. That's pretty cool. No, no, I don't, I don't know.
01:09:17
Denis Tyrell
I'm even going to pretend.
01:09:18
Coy Baker
oh Oh, he's going to kill me now that I forgot. the other host's name. Anyway, he's the guy that does all the Black Raven Hawks with all the hatchets.
01:09:30
Coy Baker
Oh, I forget his name. Anyway, if I think about it, I'll mention it. But anyway, Chris Cash.
01:09:35
Denis Tyrell
It'll come back. It's okay. Chris cash.
01:09:38
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. He is the man. I always see him at, ah at maker's camp, which, ah that oh that's, I'm not going on this year, but it's, it, he brings a ah trailer of tools and it's like a, a garage sale barnyard, like, you know,
Chris Cash's Tool Restoration
01:09:55
Denis Tyrell
all kinds of shit that you could just, you know, it sucks that I live across the country and I'm not able to bring anything back, but you know um just endless supply of, of shit.
01:10:04
Denis Tyrell
Like the the amount of shit that he has is, is mind blowing. um And the stuff that he restores is, is incredible too.
01:10:12
Denis Tyrell
So you know, and when I, when I move one day, maybe I'll be able to take advantage of that. The little, uh, maker's camp garage.
01:10:18
Coy Baker
He's a wealth of knowledge and he's a wealth of knowledge.
01:10:19
Denis Tyrell
So for the cool dude.
01:10:23
Coy Baker
Roy Scott is the other host on that podcast, by the way.
01:10:26
Denis Tyrell
Okay, cool. Thank you for fixing that.
01:10:27
Coy Baker
Sorry, and shout out Roy Scott.
01:10:28
Tony C
like you're thank you again
01:10:30
Denis Tyrell
What's up Roy? That's right.
01:10:32
Denis Tyrell
Uh, that's right. All right.
01:10:34
Coy Baker
he's He's not one of the six listeners, so you're good.
01:10:37
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, it's true.
01:10:38
Tony C
Oh, you only got six listeners and I wasted my time on this shit?
01:10:41
Denis Tyrell
You did. That's the, that that's, um,
01:10:42
Tony C
Fuck, I could have been eating a nutter butter this entire...
01:10:47
Denis Tyrell
we normally don't tell people until they're, they're done. And that's why we don't have any guests ever done. So that, that, that works out.
01:10:52
Tony C
I'm so glad I didn't take off any clothes for this episode either.
01:10:54
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. That's beautiful.
01:10:59
Denis Tyrell
No, no, no. We have five. We're, we're, ah we're trying to get six.
01:11:04
Coy Baker
Hey, Jared, what's your shout out? Who you got? Wow.
01:11:06
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, I got my buddy Micah Dunn over at MD underscore Edgeworks.
Micah Dunn's Diverse Work
01:11:11
Denis Tyrell
Micah has, I didn't realize he, 47.6 thousand followers. point six thousand followers um
01:11:18
Denis Tyrell
Micah, just awesome dude. Good friend of mine. um Very gracious to have me over to his his shop in Texas a a handful of times as well. um But just a absolute hustler of a maker.
01:11:32
Denis Tyrell
um If I'm going to be trying to emulate somebody's work ethic and hustle, it's got to be Micah. That guy just gets after it. full-time job, full-time family, the whole thing.
01:11:44
Denis Tyrell
And he's just consistently putting stuff out and really great work, all kinds of work. Not, not afraid to try, you know, EDC chef, blacksmithing, flipper steak, you know, making Damascus just, just an awesome dude and a fantastic maker. And I can't believe I haven't shouted him out. So I just wanted to to give them. So make sure you go, uh, check out, um, all of the guys here. That's MD edge works, uh, Mount Phillip metal works and, uh, great blades, uh, stop by, give them a follow and tell them the boys at triple T said, what's up.
01:12:21
Coy Baker
All good dudes. I talked to Micah in a couple of play shows every once in a while.
01:12:28
Denis Tyrell
Really cool, dude. Yeah. Fantastic.
Future Plans for Hourglass Knives
01:12:30
Denis Tyrell
Um, Yeah, so anybody got anything cool coming up that we're looking forward to? um i I'm going to golf and try to get maybe a couple hours in and in the shop this week.
01:12:45
Denis Tyrell
And that's pretty much it before I start.
01:12:46
Coy Baker
You're going to golf color me surprised.
01:12:48
Denis Tyrell
That's right. And then I got a bunch of work travel coming up again here too soon. So a couple more weeks here at the house and then then the tour starts again. so But yeah, that's it.
01:13:00
Coy Baker
You miss any episodes or is it just during the week stuff?
01:13:04
Denis Tyrell
Yeah, i just during the week. Later in the week, so.
01:13:06
Coy Baker
Yeah. Yeah, sure. Tony, do you, what's the plan for Hourglass Knives? I mean, you know, you talked about making more knives at your kind of your own pace right now. Is there, is that the vision to just kind of keep it more on the make as you want schedule or is there a plan for scaling it maybe a little bit in the future? What's the plan?
01:13:26
Tony C
You know, I'm really hoping this future, you know, there's a lot of things going on right now We're trying to buy a home here, particularly a farm. We would love some cows, um you know, some chickens, stuff like that.
01:13:37
Tony C
We like raw milk. We like chickens. I also, after hunting with llamas this last week, I now want llamas in my life. Those things are fucking amazing. God, real quick, llamas, they have these fighting teeth.
01:13:51
Tony C
And the males will try and gild each other. So they will try and bite each other's testicles off. Yeah, very interesting. um Man, i I learned a lot about llamas.
01:14:03
Tony C
Anyways, um so I'm hoping with this stuff.
01:14:06
Denis Tyrell
I tried so hard not to be. but
01:14:11
Denis Tyrell
ah Color me long. Jesus.
01:14:17
Tony C
Oh, I got a whole story I won't go into, but we one of our llamas.
01:14:19
Denis Tyrell
Oh, hi, mom.
01:14:21
Tony C
One of our llamas, I was recently bow hunting. I do archery and I went elk hunting at down at the Rio Grande National Forest, Colorado, New Mexico border.
01:14:32
Tony C
And we brought our llamas with us. And one of our llamas was almost raped by a bull elk.
01:14:40
Tony C
Yes, probably shouldn't use that word, but hey I used it. And that's literally what happened. It got wrapped around some trees.
01:14:46
Denis Tyrell
Bull's fine.
01:14:48
Tony C
yeah yeah Yeah, it got wrapped around some trees and um you can leave llamas for a few days. If there's green grass, they can survive. They're like camels, they're related to camels. So they store water and you don't have to give food and water for a couple of days because they're surviving on the grass and they're absorbing the water.
01:15:05
Tony C
So um after like a day and a half of spiking out, we came back and it was wrapped up. And on top of the llamas poop was a huge amount of elk bull poop just sitting right there.
01:15:18
Tony C
The llama itself had pee all over the side of it and it's ribs right here. We're very tender to the touch. Like the L was sitting there. So I think we came right back at the time. oh God.
01:15:30
Tony C
I love llamas. I don't know. We got, we got a lot to talk about when we're off air boys.
01:15:35
Tony C
Well, it was a pretty good.
01:15:35
Denis Tyrell
yeah a fucking llama whisperer i love this
01:15:39
Tony C
Oh man, llamas are my spirit animals now.
Rekindling Knife-Making Passion
01:15:41
Tony C
and And this guy actually only had one eye from a year ago. He was hunting or on an outfitting journey and his eye got taken out by a branch. So one eyed Jack is my spirit llama.
01:15:51
Denis Tyrell
oh thank you that's that's the episode name spirit llama love it all right
01:15:53
Tony C
Yeah. Um, so, so besides with all that, um, with hourglass knives, I really hope to, to get back into knives.
01:16:01
Tony C
Um, I love, I, I truly do love making knives. I just have to find that passion again. And, you know, I feel it coming back with taking these small orders and stuff like this. And, um, yeah, hopefully, hopefully in the next couple months, um, you know, you see a lot more coming out of my shop and, um, you know, Tony back, um, back slinging knives, man.
01:16:23
Denis Tyrell
Where can we find you?
01:16:23
Coy Baker
Good stuff. Good stuff.
01:16:28
Denis Tyrell
don't need your address, but that that'll work.
01:16:30
Tony C
Okay, good. I was trying to think my address.
01:16:31
Tony C
No, um you can find me on um Instagram at Hourglass Knives. um Yeah, that's that's where you can find me.
01:16:40
Denis Tyrell
You got a website too?
01:16:42
Tony C
i don't have a I do have a website, but I don't have a website.
01:16:45
Denis Tyrell
Gotcha. You have a one to do an Echo Blades website.
01:16:48
Denis Tyrell
The same one. It's there, but it's not.
01:16:50
Tony C
Yeah, you know, I got... It's there. It's there. And I just have to press something and it's live, but I haven't put that much time into it. and You know, um Instagram's got all my work on it.
01:17:03
Denis Tyrell
Koi, what's coming up for you?
Upcoming Matrix Damascus Pattern
01:17:05
Coy Baker
Oh, well, we got the Grime Reaper coming out. That's kind of the been the big push. Obviously, Stainless. We already talked about that.
01:17:13
Coy Baker
We've got this week's drop, actually. We'll just well you know we'll just hit it real quick. Let's talk talk drop real quick. It is called Matrix.
01:17:23
Coy Baker
Tony talked over it.
01:17:24
Denis Tyrell
Did you do, what was that?
01:17:29
Coy Baker
It's called Matrix.
01:17:30
Denis Tyrell
I no i was just, I couldn't even do it. I was going to talk over it again.
01:17:32
Coy Baker
It's called Matrix.
01:17:34
Tony C
sorry can you say that again?
01:17:34
Denis Tyrell
I meant, what's that movie?
01:17:35
Coy Baker
Shut up. Shut up.
01:17:37
Denis Tyrell
Neo what, what?
01:17:38
Denis Tyrell
Blue, Blue Pill?
01:17:40
Coy Baker
Where's the fucking mute button on this guy? All right. Um...
01:17:49
Coy Baker
Anyway, this is a ah brand new pattern that I've actually been wanting to do for quite a while. um It's all. So this week's ah straight Damascus. It's the matrix pattern Damascus. There's no copper in it this week.
01:18:02
Coy Baker
It's a really cool take on like a basket weave, except the orientation is different. And we utilize several different sets of crushed W's inside this arrangement.
01:18:13
Coy Baker
And then we pattern through them to bring up all these cool layers. It's a very, very cool, unique look.
01:18:19
Coy Baker
um It's hard to explain without having a visual, but that is this week's drop matrix Damascus, and it's going to be a pattern and a material that we implement into other layouts down the road.
01:18:31
Coy Baker
So very excited for that.
01:18:33
Coy Baker
So that's kind of what's up.
01:18:33
Tony C
I'm excited to see it.
01:18:35
Denis Tyrell
Yeah. And I forget, Corey, forgive me, because I'm um so accustomed.
01:18:40
Denis Tyrell
And every week, i this week's drop is last week's drop that the guys, you know, the the five people can't get. And you're giving a sneak peek into what's actually coming, that they can actually use the the Baker app to get the early day access for the brand new matrix that we have not seen, and but will be seeing very soon.
01:19:03
Denis Tyrell
I feel better about this now.
01:19:03
Coy Baker
you Good job. Good job.
01:19:06
Coy Baker
Yeah. That is this week's drop. App users can get onto that drop on Friday afternoon and then it goes live Saturday evening to everybody else. So.
01:19:18
Denis Tyrell
Well, boys, uh, I thank you sincerely for, uh, Koi always for, for jumping in, Tony, uh, miss your brother.
01:19:24
Coy Baker
Of Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
01:19:26
Denis Tyrell
So good to see you.
01:19:27
Denis Tyrell
I'm so glad to see some, some action coming back out. Um, I completely relate to, to the life thing happening, but, uh, we're all eager to see what's happening. We wish you the best. that I am extremely happy for the the new life, uh, all the good things that are happening.
01:19:43
Denis Tyrell
