When You’re Struggling To Conceive

S3 E11 · Eat Like a Mother
Avatar

Why is it harder for some people to conceive, even when you’re doing everything right? In this episode I dive into the topic of fertility and conception. I discuss why conception is a true miracle that can only be explained supernaturally and offer some encouragement for the woman who is struggling with infertility. I hope this encourages you to trust in God’s plan for your health and treat your body well as you work toward generational wellness.

Why is fertility a struggle for some?

00:00:48
Speaker
Well, this week I want to discuss something, really a question that I get from people all the time on the internet.
00:00:56
Speaker
And it's this idea of why is it so hard for some people to conceive? And for years I have taught that conception is a secondary life function, sometimes This is true.
00:01:10
Speaker
when i talk about a secondary life function that means a life function that is not necessary to keep your heart pumping and your lungs breathing when we talk about metabolism we talk about hormones When your body is under significant stress, it will not prioritize fertility.
00:01:29
Speaker
It will slow down fertility in order to protect your heart and lungs. Essentially, during times of stress or famine or illness or whatever might be going on that is Causing your adrenal glands to work harder and not allowing your thyroid to do the job of energy production.
00:01:46
Speaker
This will cause our secondary life functions to slow down. Infertility is usually ah one of those things.

Personal frustrations with infertility

00:01:54
Speaker
But this begs the question, why is it that some people have a harder time conceiving when they actually are doing everything right?
00:02:04
Speaker
When you actually are working with healing your metabolism, when you actually are doing the right things and following the plans and eating enough food and getting your sunshine and you've done the HTMA testing and the GI mapping and all of those things and you're still struggling to conceive.
00:02:23
Speaker
And why is it that you who are doing the right things are having a hard time and other people that you see that are not doing these things that probably eat like crap that are not nourishing their body and metabolism.
00:02:42
Speaker
Why is it that they are able to get pregnant and you are not? And my answer to that question is, i don't know. I know that's probably not what you wanted to hear today, but hear me out.
00:02:56
Speaker
I truly don't know why some people have a really hard time conceiving and some people don't. There are some people that eat absolute garbage and drink and smoke and treat their bodies horribly and yet have no trouble conceiving.
00:03:12
Speaker
And there are other people that truly are deeply nourishing their bodies and are still struggling. And it can be so freaking frustrating.

Acceptance and control over fertility

00:03:24
Speaker
For me, when we were first walking through infertility and trying to conceive, I was so angry with God. I would look at family members or friends that I knew did not care as much about their health as I did, that they were living unhealthy lifestyles and they had never lost a baby.
00:03:45
Speaker
And here I was post miscarriage trying to piece my life back together. And I was so so angry because it didn't make sense. So I want to tell you what I've landed on and how I've reconciled relationship.
00:04:00
Speaker
idea as I've served women these past few years who were in my shoes, women who are trying to conceive, women who are trying to restore their metabolism, women who are wanting to balance their hormones.
00:04:12
Speaker
What I have concluded and where I have landed these past few years is Really pretty simple. Control what you can control and then live with open hands that the God of the universe is watching over you.

Generational impact on fertility

00:04:27
Speaker
Because the truth of the matter is, conception is an absolute miracle. The fact that millions of sperm are poured into the reproductive tract during every uninhibited conjugal visit and only one makes it to the egg is That's an absolute miracle.
00:04:47
Speaker
Even my unbelieving physiology professor at my extremely liberal college explained conception as a miracle. Because non-believers understand, at least subconsciously, that conception can only be explained supernaturally.
00:05:06
Speaker
And while yes, there's so much we can control, and you probably know this if you've been listening to my podcast for any amount of time, there is so much we can control when it comes to our metabolic health, when it comes to our fertility. There also are so many things that we cannot control that directly impacted our fertility.
00:05:25
Speaker
Things like the foods our moms ate. When they were pregnant with us. The lifestyle our grandmothers lived when they were pregnant with our mothers. Because our fertility is planned three generations back.
00:05:39
Speaker
Other things like how we ate and lived when we were children. How many vaccines our grandmothers, mothers, and selves received, how much screen time we were exposed to as children, how many food dyes we ate, and honestly, so much more.
00:05:56
Speaker
So while I believe there is so much we can do to control our health and nourish ourselves, and treat our bodies as a temple God designed them to be. I also am not naive to the fact that there is so much we cannot control, and truly we can't control everything, and no one will have perfect health this side of heaven.

Avoiding fertility comparisons

00:06:19
Speaker
So if you're ever looking at someone else and you're frustrated that they aren't having problems and you are, I want you to remember number one, that comparison is the thief of joy. And you have no idea how those people's grandmothers and mothers lived.
00:06:37
Speaker
You have no idea what their history may be ah that might've set them up this way. The history that probably looks a lot different than yours. I want you to not be discouraged. I want you to be encouraged, actually.
00:06:50
Speaker
Continue nourishing the heck out of your body. Do what you know to be true and treat your body the way God designed it to be treated. Remembering that how you're treating your body now, how you are working on your metabolic health, improving your metabolic function, improving your fertility, everything that you are doing right now is not just impacting your body,
00:07:13
Speaker
but is setting the future generations of children and your children's children and your children's children's children up for success in their health, in their fertility, in all areas of their life.
00:07:28
Speaker
So this isn't just about you. This time that you're spending right now, maybe you don't see all of the healing, all of the changes, all of the wins that you're looking for this side of heaven.
00:07:41
Speaker
The work you're doing right now is not just for you, but it's for the people after you. And while I know it can be so hard to look at other people and not see them struggling with the same things that you are struggling with, I also want you to remember that not everything is as it seems.
00:08:00
Speaker
And while some people might not have trouble conceiving, maybe their body doesn't shut down conception as a way to prioritize their heart and prioritize their primary life functions.
00:08:14
Speaker
There are going to be other issues that they are likely struggling with that you have no idea about. So don't take this time. Don't waste your time comparing. Don't waste your time being angry at God like i did.

Conception as a miracle

00:08:28
Speaker
But like I said, again, continue nourishing the heck out of your body. Do what you know to be true. Treat your body well. Then Leave your hands open for God to do his work because at the end of the day, if conception is your goal, if you're trying to grow your family and this is one of those metabolic markers that has not seen the improvement, you have not seen the improvement that you are looking for,
00:08:58
Speaker
I want you to remember that you can do all the right things, but the act of conception, the creation of a new life is an absolute miracle and can only be explained supernaturally.
00:09:13
Speaker
and know this is kind of a heavy topic, but it's something that's been on my heart a lot the past few weeks. as I've been speaking with people and as I've been getting this question more and more.
00:09:24
Speaker
So I hope this week's podcast is encouraging to you. i hope that it's encouraging to your friends.

Conclusion and health acceptance

00:09:30
Speaker
I know this week's episode was short and sweet, but I hope you take away that while yes, there's so much that we can do, there's also so much that we can't control and we have to be willing to live in that peace and with that tension, knowing that while yes, we have this freedom and we have these abilities to make choices to improve our health, at the end of the day, there's only so much we can do.
00:09:54
Speaker
And we have to trust that the God of the universe is doing a good work in us. I love
