Introduction to 'Good Pain' Podcast
00:00:01
Speaker
I'm Jeremy. And I'm Tyler. Welcome to Good Pain, where we talk about life's true intensities without pretending they're easy solve. What if the things we're told to fix, optimize, or get over are actually where the real wisdom lives?

Speaker
Each week we gather for the kind of honest conversations you desire to be a part of more often about the relentless demands, the unexpected grief, the quiet victories, and everything in between. Because maybe, just maybe, the answer isn't to eliminate the hard stuff, it's to find the good in it.

Speaker
Welcome to the conversation.
00:00:43
Speaker
As we're winding down season one and talking about loss, grief, and healing, last week we introduced you to somebody else's story. And this week we're going to go back to my story, my family's story, and we have a special guest that we're going to be talking to.

Communication and Interaction with Claire
00:03:38
Speaker
Maddie. Maddie is our longtime day nurse and has been with Claire for several years now and was kind enough to introduce Claire to a shared show for just the two of them, Bachelors in Paradise, the classic. Claire, what are the last things you want to leave for the people who are listening? How about some fairy hair?
00:03:54
Speaker
I want orange. Okay, I guess we're going to do fairy hair after this. So thank you for being here, Claire. I'm glad everybody got to hear from you directly and what you're up to and who you are. Goodbye. Goodbye.

For context, Claire speaks through an eye communication device that tracks the movement of her eyes as long as

they're open. Sometimes they're not open. She likes to sleep like all teenagers do.
00:04:24
Speaker
How we work with Claire is we ask her questions, we interact with her. Because of her brain injury and the part of her brain that controls her eyes, she has days that are better than others.
00:04:35
Speaker
And on days where she's really challenged, she struggles to move her eyes and settle on the tiles that she uses to speak. And this is important to know because for Claire, her conversations are not ever this fluid.
00:04:50
Speaker
Through audio editing, we're able to make it sound like it's much more turnkey than it actually is. We have to be patient with Claire. We have to listen. We have to wait for her.
00:05:01
Speaker
Some days she is real quick and other days it takes a lot longer longer to have a conversation with her. Additionally with Claire is she picks from selected tiles that define some of the language that she has available to her. And so she will oftentimes choose some of the closest fits. And really that leads to her creativity and her use with the talker as well.
00:05:26
Speaker
She goes with her day nurse, who she mentioned in here, Maddie, to school. She's now in a program that's called Transitions, having graduated high school at the end of May in 2025. Every single day, she goes with her communication device. We call and refer to it as her talker. She interacts with her peers, her teachers, with Maddie. And there's a lot of stories that we have that we cherish that involve Claire expressing herself in particularly an education setting and really dropping certain things that are very appropriate but also inappropriate at times that gives us the opportunity to talk with her and give her lectures about decorum and
Season Wrap-Up and Future Plans

I'm pleased you got to hear Claire's voice through her talker. Next week, we will have one last discussion in Season 1. These are shorter discussions. We're really into the transition phase into Season 2.

Speaker
After that, we will be taking some breaks and we'll probably be dropping some bonus episodes in the coming weeks. But we will be resuming a conversation.
