Arsenal's Transfer Strategy and Challenges

00:00:09
Speaker
We have very clear ideas of of the place that we want, yes, and it was before Gabi and it was with Gabi injured right now and we have to wait and see on how things develop.
00:00:23
Speaker
So how did they develop? Welcome to the Daily Arsenal Podcast, brought to you as part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. We are recording this at 7 past 11 on the 3rd of February. The transfer window in the UK has just shut.
00:00:39
Speaker
and Arsenal have done sweet Fanny Adams in the window. It has been a brutal window for us, so here to discuss it, I am your host, Josh Vince, Joshua Duncan, Jamie Patterson, and Craig Matthews are joining me. Gents, Josh, we'll start off with you, mate. You called it, as did Jamie, I It was gonna be a brutal window. Josh, did you expect it to be this barren?
00:01:06
Speaker
Yeah, I did. I did. I was kind of hoping I'd be proven wrong, you know, especially with Jesus being injured. I was hoping, you know, surely we're going to get somebody in now. But now is, you know, we're to start with the same team to the summer.
00:01:20
Speaker
And he's got me the best of it, I guess. It's quite depressing. He's a little bit in it. Yeah. Like you stay up till 11. Like we finished recording um yesterday's episode probably about two hours ago and we had a little thought, didn't we Jamie? Like a little bit of hope something might happen. I mean, again, I was also in the same kind of boat as JD here. I was like, look,
00:01:40
Speaker
I want to be proven wrong like I got up this morning I was like I want to be proven wrong today I want to go and see us go and at least try and attempt at least attempt I think that is what Arsenal fans might have maybe at least had a bit of respect for Arteta you know to go out there and try and attempt to make a signing but the fact that We went and we went and put a bid in for Olly Watkins when at that time when Duran was going to Saudi, it you kind of just knew
00:02:12
Speaker
you know you kind of just knew it was false hope at that point because you know villa were not going to be mad enough to go and let duran go for what was it like 60 70 million and then expect whatkins to go when you people forget they're in the champions league crying out loud they are in such a great position right now why would whatkins want to leave villa who are doing really well so then go to Arsenal who again you know they're sitting you know we're sitting second in the league you know we've been competing for the title um for the past few seasons but
00:02:52
Speaker
Again, it just, you know, I never forget the the that, I think it was Ghazidis back when he was like, or Cronké, when he was like, that knock, that special knock, you know it's Arsenal, you know that knock is different. And I felt like this January, there was no knock at all.
00:03:10
Speaker
No, I mean, to be honest, for me, the Watkins move was a bit embarrassing, to be honest. Craig, did you feel similar? Because obviously we put the bid in. It was announced. It was the day that Villa were playing in the Champions League, I think. It was the final day of the Champions League. It was announced that we put a bid in for Watkins and then out of nowhere, they've suddenly sold John Duran. So the deal was clearly off. was Did you find it a bit? Well, not just that, but the whole window, a bit embarrassing for Arsenal. but Definitely. We needed players who didn't get an old one.
00:03:42
Speaker
no now i've only got one fit striker or somebody it's fair not to talk so I was going to say, Josh, would you call that a fit striker? I mean, and I
00:04:00
Speaker
Craig, for 18 months, we've known we needed a forward. It's not like this is a new problem. So where on earth do you think this has gone? Do you agree with Jamie? That's the board or is it just like a lack of vision from us or a lack of intent?
00:04:16
Speaker
I think a bit of both with a lack of vision and lack of intent because we didn't know what we would look like in the last season after the chamferedy defeat against our own buying unit losses and we knew we needed a quality striker to finish our chances off and we didn't buy one in the summer. Although we didn't want to go back onto the summer window but that i was terrible. If you look back now, it wasn't a blue window. Signings by the Euros went and should have gone for summer teeth.
00:04:37
Speaker
I didn't get nobody in January as well. I knew it wouldn't be anybody. I had a feeling. I think the oil and waterkins deal was just a little paper open of cracks just to please the fans to buy more tickets for games. And that's all good. That's all I have, nobody. Yeah. It's still what happens, isn't it? Yeah. it's It's one of those things. I mean, I was reading, I had Sky Sports on sort of like in the last hour or so.
00:05:01
Speaker
And I was also reading the BBC coverage at the same time, and somebody called Dave on the BBC website put this comment, Arsenal on this window have been like the husband that gets asked to go buy something from the grocery store and forgets what he was sent for. Every has every glo it every single one of us, isn't it? But it's true. I mean, ah Josh, weve I feel like we've missed a big opportunity. Sesco didn't want to be second fiddle to Havert.
00:05:29
Speaker
So he missed out on him. Zuba Mendy, you know, apparently was signing him in the summer. Suddenly that all goes quiet and nothing's happening there.

Arsenal's Transfer Tactics and Title Readiness

00:05:38
Speaker
Olly Watkins, shambolic timing. Are we just inept in the transform window?
00:05:44
Speaker
Um, I mean, this is a Mandy one. I mean, I think, you know, I think they agreed personal terms. It's still not official yet, but maybe it's something behind the doors. Yeah. I think that's, that that's probably the only and positive we can really take from the January 10th to when they've got something ready for the summer. I think it will be a good sign. And if you we, if we can put it over the line, um, the Ollie Watkins one, apparently again, not, I don't know the sources, but if it's correct or not, apparently, you know, um, we were offered, we really offered them to us earlier to start at the transfer week window.
00:06:14
Speaker
and And for some reason, I also took a while to act on it. I guess maybe they're probably exploring other options, you know, seeing if they can get probably the Cisco one over the line. um I mean, for us to go in for a title race and we're this short, I mean, if we didn't have the injuries and you want to leave it to summer, I'd have been like, all right, fair enough. I get you want to get your main guy in summer.
00:06:36
Speaker
You have a bit more time, you know, yeah but we're quite short now. And, you know, if you're really pushed on for the title with six points behind and you've got a game in hand, you know, it's not. And, you know, our form is not terrible. So some people will say, I think Artetto and the board play say, well, you know, you've not lost a game in.
00:06:54
Speaker
I think what is in 12 or something. Yeah, so they're probably thinking, you know, you know, it's good form. We can carry it on for the rest of the season where other fans or us fans will probably be like, no, we need to go. This is the time we can push on against, you know, push on and really give it a real challenge right to the end.
00:07:10
Speaker
But I don't know. I don't know what's going on with that club. Honestly, I mean, at the beginning of the season, everyone was talking about fine margins and it's sort of like taking that next step. A big striker would have been that next step, I feel like. And it's the thing that we've been clearly calling out for. ah Jamie, you before we even started recording the last episode, you mentioned that you weren't sort of sold on Watkins. I mean, the money that was being suggested was 60 million pounds. and And the guy, the guy is my age. He's 29. Like 60 mil for a 29 year old is a lot of money. We're not to buy in Munich. Yeah. Now, to be honest with you, I had actually quite a bit of stick from a lot of my mates. They were like, what? You wouldn't take Watkins now? And I'm like, well, no, I wouldn't because the thing is right. No, I would pay 60 million. But the thing is right.
00:08:01
Speaker
he's he's in his peak i i feel like his peak was at villa if he was to go to arsenal i just feel like we'd only have him for at least two three years before then having to then revert to then oh we're we're just back to square one three years later we're we're crying for another striker i just think this in this window, I would have preferred a long term solution so that, you know, we can then, you know, say we get I don't know, for example, if we got Cisco on a four year deal, um we could then be in three years time, we could be like, right, well, you know what, Cisco, you've done really well for us, you know, you've won us a title, you've won us two titles, say, um you know, let's, you know, let' let's, let's extend the contract, let's give you a long term deal. And that, you know, at least then, you know,
00:08:51
Speaker
In terms of money, it would be money well spent. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, I know what you mean. Craig, obviously we're talking a lot about strikers here. Craig, did you think there was any other positions where we needed more backup as well? On the win. Were there any sort of like big rumours that caught your eye that we might have been in for? I heard that we're going to um activate the release clause on Nico Williams. um bill bar yeah haven't had I've hearing that for a long time. and like now I'd like to look on someone like Semenyo from warm but likely, I think he's a good player. For a couple of seasons, he's quick, he's got a good shot on him, powerful shot. So that's someone like that, you can develop, rural talent, you can develop into a consistent player.
00:09:36
Speaker
I mean, Nico Williams would have been a dream signing really in this window and his release cause isn't even that big. And now that we're waiting until the summer, there's every chance they could renegotiate that contract and whack that release cause right up. Cause they know how million yeah yeah they know how in demand the player is. So it, it does feel as, I mean, a lot of teams have made a lot of strides in this transfer window, which we're going to talk about in the next section, but it just feels I personally, I feel like we've missed a beat. I feel like, like you guys have said, this was.
00:10:06
Speaker
This was the month where one signing could change the season for us. One signing in a forward position could just give us even just a little bit of energy, a little bit of him to somebody on loan. Even, you know, like I reckon Mathis Tell would have been really, really good for us. You know, don't get me started. Don't get me started on him. And now he's going to get me started on him because he's now officially he's now officially announced his retirement.
00:10:33
Speaker
He's announcing his retirement from winning trophies. He was at Bayern Munich living his best life. And now he was like, you know what? I'm going to go and just announce my retirement at 11 o'clock on the 3rd of February. but we we don't We don't know. He could win the, what do you call it? The Caramel Cup. Don't. He could win that. He could win that. And I could buy you in the box. I don't say that, man. Don't say that. Oh, Jenny, we're still in that. we could If we come up against them, we will have them comfortably. But yeah, it's just it's a shame. I mean, when we look at past January signings, Craig, like Trussard, Jorginho, Erzil, Mikatarian, Aubameyang, we can get good players in. They just lack the confidence this year, seemingly. I've heard a lot of the signing we've got in January has to be Aubameyang, also good signing.
00:11:28
Speaker
Also, it was a good sign as well. no sort of at time At the time, because obviously assume we could have got Mudri, and we got him instead for half the price. If you look at that, you have to say he kind of dodged a bullet on that one. Oh, 100 percent, yeah. My man was a good sign, and the best sign in the window. I haven't signed anyone like him for a long time. I mean, a like him.
00:11:56
Speaker
But he was probably the last big striker we signed, wasn't he, Alba? Really? Yeah. Yeah. It was like, as it was like, as it in the summer, that summer, then he brought a man in the gym. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, since then, what strikers have we actually bought? No one. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:12:16
Speaker
I don't know what he is. realis review Even, even in an interview, Jay Zeus even came out and was like, I'm not a striker. yeah So I just wanted to add though as well. Um, cause Jamie says, I'm very interested about Bonnie Watkins being a bit too old. I remember we were linked with, um, Vardy.
00:12:36
Speaker
You could get up. After Leicester won the league, I mean, you still do the job now, you know what I mean? Sometimes certain players, you know, their age, there's something about them that they just, they still score goals. Age doesn't define them. Yeah, age doesn't define them. I mean, we could, you better have it for me, personally. At this point, I think we'd take anyone over. Honestly, I think he is. I generally think he is. I think he's better. Yeah.
00:13:04
Speaker
I mean, he started his career late like Vardy did, Watkins. They both started sort of lower league a little bit later on. So maybe he's got some more legs in him than we're giving him credit for. I doubt you though. I don't trust it personally. We're going to take a little break. We're going to hear from our partners at Zencast. And when we come back, we're going to talk about how everybody else did in the transfer window, who's had the best and who's had the worst. Although I think we can argue we've really answered who's had the worst. We'll be back just after this break. Here at Global Sports Podcast Network, we spend a lot of time selecting our delivery platform. Zencaster came out the clear winner. Other Teams' Transfer Activities

00:14:06
Speaker
And welcome back to this second and final, because it's it's late and we've had a long day, ah and as part of the Daily Arsenal podcast. We're going to talk about the teams who've had, you know, a bit more activity, let's say, in the transfer window, starting off with the 115 financial charges Manchester City who just had it here a moment ago. Let's see how much they've spent this January. I believe I saw a stat that they have spent more in this January transfer window than the entire Premier League spent yeah last year. Jamie,
00:14:46
Speaker
they have, oh here we go, 170, 180 million they've spent in this January window. They're 50 million on Nico Gonzalez which has just gone through. It's just gone through. Yeah, Omar Mamoush for 59 million, Kushinov for 33 million, oh dear, and Vitorice for 30 million. How on earth, considering they're under quite a lot of investigation from the Premier League, are they justifying this, do you reckon?
00:15:13
Speaker
I mean, to be honest with you, with with City, the reason I think the reason why they've gone into the window, especially for January, is I think they're just trying to do, I think they're just in a rebuilding process. I think they're just trying to prepare themselves for for next season. um They know that the title's out of their hands now, and it's just for them now, it's top four is the priority.
00:15:37
Speaker
um FA Cup, they could even go on an FA Cup run as far as we know, they could even go on and on an FA Cup run just to kind of paper over the cracks of the Premier League season. um Champions League, I mean it's going to be a very big ask because again. Who have they got again? It's Real Madrid. Real Madrid, isn't it? Real Madrid. So again, it's a big ask. It is an extremely big ask. So look, I mean, yeah, with City, I think they've just, I think Marmouche, I just, again, I think he will be a very interesting player to see at City. I think
00:16:20
Speaker
City fans are going to expect a lot of him because of his you know his history with Frankfurt, but again, it's going to be an interesting one for City. Yeah, I mean, ah Josh, accuracy. I mean, a lot of teams have made a lot of movements. Who do you think has had the best window so far? Well, I'd say so far, as of now.
00:16:43
Speaker
I've probably got to say, really, you know, great villa I mean, they they've, they've, they've bought in but a few firepower. Hopefully, you know, for them, it it works out, you know, Rashford is kind of a hit or miss is either he would do really well, or yeah, just kind of just, I don't know, gate heads in the sand, store finger by his girlfriend. I don't know.
00:17:03
Speaker
um that's known um And Marco Accentio, you know, um that was a good ah it's good deal. so And the guy from Chelsea, you know, on loan as well. Yeah, think know did yeah they a good window. They have a good window. I mean, it's very positive. If you're a villa fan um waking up this morning or going to bed at night, I think I'd be comfortable. because that and I mean, when you look at they sent a lot of players out on loan, but I think what they've done is really smart for January, which is, you know, they've loaned a lot of players in. Yeah, they bought Daniel Marlin, who I think is a great signing for them to replace Leon Bailey. Andres Garcia as well. He's a youngster with a lot of talent from Levante. They bought him in relatively cheap. And then like you say, loaning in Marcus Rashford, that takes a lot of the pressure off of
00:17:49
Speaker
sort of like making it work immediately and it it takes you know the risk factor out of it slightly and loaning in Asensio who we all know is a good player he's a really strong player absolutely is though he's but he has been injured for quite a bit this season so that's the only risk and i think that's why Arsenal did i know Arsenal in for him as well i think that's probably why Arsenal didn't really you know fancy it you know yeah it's i think they've had a really strong one yeah Craig West Ham made an interesting couple of moves today. They brought James Ward Proust back, who I think is a chronically underrated player. I think he's fantastic. But they've also loaned in Evan Ferguson. What'd you make of that? Ferguson's a good player. When he first came, when he first jumped from the scene up with this guy, his quality, his goal could be impressive. That's what I said. He's got a good input in Sastogorska and records for Ireland as well. He's full of helpful goals for them as well. He's a good striker. We didn't go for someone like him, someone who he could just
00:18:47
Speaker
They can rotate. He can score goals. If it went fit and fire, he can score goals. So, I think West Ham need a striker. They've been crying for a striker for a long time now, I think. Antonio being out. The other striker has been here. Four quirk has not really worked out for them. Hasn't scored a lot of goals, but he's out injured for a long time as well, so.
00:19:06
Speaker
I think his firm doesn't get fit and up and running. He can score a lot of goals for them to stay up. Ward trials as well. Good play. I've rated them a lot at West Ham last season. He scores on good free kicks in the Premier League. Good at set pieces. or He's going to be an additional, because like a brand new sign into them now coming back. I agree and bloody hell boys, Chelsea haven't bought any anyone.
00:19:31
Speaker
No, but I believe they've loaned... I believe they've loaned Chillwell to Palace. Yeah, I heard that as well. I have. That is a good move for Palace, I'd say. Although, again, i mean Josh has mentioned it for a few players. He has just made a glass, done Chillwell. Yeah. Very fragile. Yes. Very fragile. Has your girlfriend said anything about that and her concerns about him? Let me have a look.
00:19:59
Speaker
she's not actually said anything she's not she's not said anything yet she's just kind of said to me about arsenal's transfer business and she's like i can tell you're annoyed and i'm like not fast she's like that's the biggest lie you've ever told jamie yeah I mean yeah so I mean I'd say it's a smartish move but he's just going to be made a glass. of Also seen Ben Brereton Diaz he's left Southampton that man has been everywhere. I see that Ben Brereton Diaz he's been loaned out to Sheffield now but I think we can all agree that Villa probably had the best transfer window because their signings show intent I think don't they?
00:20:40
Speaker
Also, I quite like the fact with Villa signings, they've all got Champions League experience, which again, Villa are going to need going forward. So I mean, listen, Villa could go on a little run here. Don't know how far they could go necessarily, but they could go on a nice little run to be fair. And I mean, even even towards like the end of the Premier League season, if they could go for Europe, if they could get another stint in Europe, I mean, I don't see why that can't be on the cards.
00:21:10
Speaker
No, i I think it's a very, very good point, mate. And honestly, and do you know what, just to compound our misery, we signed our

Reflections on Arsenal's Transfer History

00:21:17
Speaker
Bamiang. The last proper striker we signed was 2018. That was seven years ago. Wow. Seven years ago, the last proper striker we signed. Arteta, we love you, but pull your finger out, son, because we need some firepower. um Who's had it worse, us or United? Who needed players more?
00:21:39
Speaker
off. I think, yeah, I don't know. I'd probably... United, I think. United, because I think United, there are lots of different pilots yesterday at home, again. I would say many in the strike, oh, they've got two donkeys up front and can't score. They have brought in Aiden Heaven, unfortunately.
00:22:06
Speaker
We've let the boy go. Yeah, we have. It's a very good girl, the young prospects as well, as well. Barn, I mean, they've they've shaved off a little bit deadwood. Anthony has finally left.
00:22:19
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, if United, I mean, they spent quite a lot in the summer and for me, they just bought a lot of trash. Do you know what I mean? They did, didn't they? Yeah, they bought a lot. They bought on players that nobody wanted. You know, no one wanted to leave. No one wrestled those guys. Do you know what I mean?
00:22:37
Speaker
There was a fight for Dalit, was there? Yeah, there was a fight for any of them. there They're all kind of rejected. they They did what we do when we buy Chelsea players, you know? being yeah But did it with all their signings.
00:22:50
Speaker
It was like the Ajax bin, just sort of like anybody at the spot on, just scrape them up, sprinkle them on, let's hope for some magic. And the magic never came.

Closing Remarks and Future Hopes

00:22:59
Speaker
Well, that's it for today. It was only going to give me a short one because as we say, we're recording this straight after the transfer window is shut. Thank you all very much for listening. We'll be back tomorrow with our next episode. And until then, just keep praying that Arteta sees sense in summer and sorts out a brand new, a brand new frontline for us. Well, at least a new striker at the very least.
00:23:17
Speaker
And I'm sure that Josh will be praying that we can make 70 million on Kai Habits in the summer and let him go. Get rid of him and make a 10 million pound profit. But until then, thank you all very much for listening and have a great day. We'll see you tomorrow. Goodbye.
