Ep. 87: If You Want Me to Do It, Pay Me Properly

The Lone Machinists
The Lone Machinists

308 plays · Aug 26, 2026

This week on the Lone Machinist Podcast, Jamie has one hell of a week in the shop. A mold job turns into roughly 40 hours of machining in just three days, including a late-night finish, while the machine burns through an impressive amount of coolant along the way. It also sparks a much-needed conversation about pricing, especially when a retrofit or machine job takes significantly longer than expected. Meanwhile, Curt continues experimenting with anodizing and gets increasingly consistent results before dropping some big news: a 100W MOPA fiber laser and fourth axis are on the way. Back at the shop, Jamie is working on ways to automate more of the production process, including improvements to the spindle gripper, automated part handling, and a new coolant-level monitoring system designed to survive the reality of life inside a CNC machine. There's also plenty of discussion about production planning, R&D, getting machines to run unattended, and the eternal struggle of trying to take a few days off when you're the person everyone relies on to keep the machines running. 40 hours of machining. 60 litres of coolant. One very tired machinist. jamie peacock: Welcome to the Lone Machinist, where it's just you, the work, and the machine. Sorry, I surprised Kurt with the recording there. What have you got going on this week, guys?

Curt: um ah Talk about how I. Despite my claims of last week of being 99 % certain that my anodizing problems were fixed, they're not. um deburring question that I'm going to ask you. uh which i probably know the answer for and uh better ordering system because i was frustrated this week and i realized that i'm frustrating everybody else in the world Um. and Yeah. Anyways, how about what are you going to talk about? Yeah.

jamie peacock: Um, we're going to talk about customers. destroying spindles uh the handy semen packaging And then I got new coolants in my machine. Yeah, how are you this fine morning and what fancy beverage are you drinking?

Curt: Oh, uh... This fine morning, I am... uh tired because i've been sleep I'm sleeping and then I woke up and then I have these little itty bitty cans.

jamie peacock: Good evening.

jamie peacock: ah

Curt: of pop which make me feel like a giant because they're just like

jamie peacock: How cute.

Curt: they're 222 milliliters so Like my.

jamie peacock: Oh wow, that's tiny.

Curt: Yeah, they're like, I don't know. two -thirds of a regular can so yeah you just feel like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It's like perfect. It's like the perfect amount of like pop. But. Or soda as...

jamie peacock: Nice.

Curt: Some people call it. but we call it off here. Anyway. How are you? How you doing?

jamie peacock: Yeah. i'm carrying on i can uh yeah Just before we start, I was telling you it's been a week. um

Curt: yeah

jamie peacock: Yeah, fucking hell. So, uh... let Well, let's let's get into that topic first of why it was such a week. So after we recorded. probably three or four hours after that. Last week, my brother -in -law decided he's going to have a seizure.

Curt: shit

jamie peacock: in Madagascar.

Curt: Oh no.

jamie peacock: on the top of a mountain.

Curt: Oh shit, no.

jamie peacock: Yeah. And then the car overheated twice. before they could get back to the... to where they stay. in Madagascar. Along the way he had another two seizures.

Curt: Oh. no

jamie peacock: Yeah. He was with his wife, his kids and the dogs. Like the dog saw just like straight up. Thanks. apparently that morning the one doggo was being an absolute shit as soon as this went down he was just in line.

jamie peacock: He knew something wasn't right and he... just he was Following orders then. But yeah, then... Yeah, they were driving down the hill the car overheated so my sister -in -law told her six -year -old to get out and go push start the car While she lay on top of Adam so he didn't beat himself up while having a seizure Um,

jamie peacock: yeah anyway got to the clinic tells the nurse or the the person that she needs, whatever the meds were, to stop the seizure. The guy knows it's 3 ,000 RRI. She's like... Here's $20 ,000. Give me the fucking meds.

jamie peacock: And the lady came back with a change of fucking she threw the change of the ladies like he's having a seizure You can see him having a seizure, not you one.

Curt: right

jamie peacock: Me to pay for the meds first, like what the fuck? Anyway.

Curt: right

jamie peacock: They then try to get a medivac out of Madagascar. through our health insurance. And no, it's a pre -existing condition.

Curt: yeah

jamie peacock: So... She then had to leave her too. sons six and four. with the house caretaker lady there. Get on a plane. and fly back here. It took her 36 hours to get back here.

jamie peacock: Their Uber driver in... um answer and terror whatever the fuck the main the main airport in madagascar i don't actually know the name of it i thought he was a rally driver and nearly killed him a few times Then, yeah, they were They landed there.

jamie peacock: Went and stayed in a hotel for like six hours because they They had a layover Get back to the airport trying to go through passport control And now they think my brother -in -law's on drugs.

jamie peacock: so they want to swap everything Because he's out of it. He can't speak at this point. He can barely walk.

Curt: right

jamie peacock: And eventually my sister was like, no, he's just retarded. and then they let him like they let him through like he wasn't when when he Gotcha, he wasn't speaking.

Curt: go up hold true

jamie peacock: market was Fucking bad. so then once it took off she arranged uh with aerostats to have it uh the airport Ambulance come and pick him up from the plane. so he didn't have to go through passport control and bring him into the clinic at the airport.

jamie peacock: where we picked him up. But then... Going to the airport. It's the only time ever I've gone through the main interchange going to the airport where I haven't stood in a queue. the The road's just a fuck up. There's only times there's never been a fuck up.

jamie peacock: And we... I go fetch the car, i pick them up. And I drive up the airport before Danica turns the GPS on. and the roads We're fucked.

Curt: Wow.

jamie peacock: What should have been a 20 minute drive to the hospital took us an hour. I ended up having to go zigzagging through back roads and things to get.

Curt: oh no

jamie peacock: yeah it was great then dropped him at the or dropped them all off at the emergency We had arranged to go, and then the nurses there. i'm like na no he looks fine like He's had six fucking seizures in the last 24 hours. What do you mean he looks fine?

jamie peacock: So eventually got him admitted then I had him taken out of that hospital because they Calling them useless is a compliment. They had on his chart that he was epileptic not that he had had six seizures because of a brain tumor Fuck.

jamie peacock: just incompetence to note anyway On a positive note... He's back home now. Well, he's back with us now. Oh. staying in uh He was staying in Honolulu last night. He's staying with us to tonight, I think. um But yeah, he's doing much better. Seems like his medication was just out of whack.

jamie peacock: with the temperature change and whatnot on his body, wasn't metabolizing the the anti -seizure meds that he's on forever.

Curt: oh

jamie peacock: Um,

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: yeah so since the brain tumor and the uh radiation he's permanently on anti -seizure meds and looking at the levels in his blood it looks like his body wasn't metabolizing it so That's what caused the seizure, so nothing huge.

jamie peacock: ah Well, it's fucking huge, but yeah.

Curt: right

jamie peacock: less than a ideal.

Curt: Sure.

jamie peacock: Um... But yeah, he's he's ah he's okay at least. Looks like he's going back to Madagascar just with a fuckload of meds this time.

Curt: Okay. Whoa. wrong i mean

jamie peacock: yeah but he's he's okay he hasn't like Yeah.

Curt: Good outcome, but yeah.

jamie peacock: His short -term memories, and without we were very worried he wouldn't remember fuck all, but it's all come back to him. His speech is coming back. um I think he's going to a neurologist tomorrow. So yeah.

Curt: okay

jamie peacock: fun times never a dull moment and then obviously that threw a spanner and everything i had fucking planned

Curt: Jesus. Scary. Yeah.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah, I bet.

jamie peacock: Because now go visit him every day at the hospital and yeah But anyway, it was it was what it was.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: It could have been way, way worse.

Curt: Hold.

jamie peacock: I nearly got two children. Because I'm their godfather.

Curt: right

jamie peacock: And if the parents peg, Danik and I become the guardians. So they need to stay the fuck alive. Like I walked into the hospital, I'm like, butch. What part of live long and prosper did you not fucking catch?

Curt: Yeah. Right, right.

jamie peacock: Fuck. Yeah, like fucks sakes. Let them be a little bit older before you die, please.

Curt: Cheers. he's

Curt: Jesus. Yeah, I mean...

jamie peacock: geez yeaha So it's been a week. It's been a week. But we also did a fuckload of machining this week, so back on topic.

Curt: No. Oh.

jamie peacock: um Yeah, mildly, mildly stressful.

Curt: Holy moly.

jamie peacock: makes me very very concerned about brain aneurysms but uh yeah and how quickly shit can change.

Curt: Oh, yeah. Yeah, exactly.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Like Wednesday nights, I went to dinner with my sister -in -law because Danica and her mom went to the hospital

Curt: Yeah. he's

jamie peacock: And she hadn't eaten, so she came we did quiz night, she came to dinner, we had a long chat about everything and the whole story. and What a fuck show to get him back to South Africa.

Curt: Jeez. Yeah, no doubt.

jamie peacock: So they were they were in the aviation industry. and They're pretty well connected. one of the places at the airport right by us literally were going to charter a plane to go fetch him.

jamie peacock: was going to be

Curt: Wow.

jamie peacock: i need to plug in the imperializer um just just the fuel cost that we're going to do it Everything else for free, just pay for the fuel. Uh, was gonna be you know that's an inches uh seventy three thousand dollars just for fuel to fly and fetch them.

Curt: Whoa whoa

jamie peacock: yeah

Curt: Whoa!

jamie peacock: So... they had They were arranging. to fetch him from our international airport and fly him to the local rand airport which is It's like a 10 minute flight. But it took us 40 minutes to do the drive.

jamie peacock: because of traffic they were going to pick them up but the problem is you got to come in through the airport and then go back out the airport with excuse me you got to come in stamp your passport then go back out so it's kind of pointless Good job though.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: Their friends were making plans to get them. to the ear to the hospital as fast as possible. which is kind of cool.

Curt: Yeah, that is super cool.

jamie peacock: The end. Yeah, not what you know, who you know.

Curt: Yeah. Wow.

jamie peacock: knock Yeah. So, very interesting.

Curt: crazy yeah it's a crazy week

jamie peacock: Bye -bye. Very less than ideal. Yeah, well their week's been fucking wild. My week's been pretty chill other than just going to the hospital a lot. But yeah anyway.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: No.

Curt: Yeah, watermelon. well glad I'm...

jamie peacock: So yeah, what's...

Curt: So I'm glad it balanced out as.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Hmm.

Curt: good as it can by the sounds of it.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: so

jamie peacock: Yeah, it could have been very much worse.

Curt: Jeez. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: I mean... I mean, it's good. Good. He's living his life to where he wants to be living his life and not like.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Not.

jamie peacock: Exactly.

Curt: So I mean, it's so I guess...

jamie peacock: like danik is a bit stressed that he wants to go back but i'm like why not

Curt: Yeah, like...

jamie peacock: like take a bunch of meds with and fucking at least

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: and these days making a lot for himself which yeah he literally can't get a job.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So, yeah.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm like, sweet, if he wants to go back, let him go back.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: He's a grown -ass adult.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

jamie peacock: All right.

Curt: Take the... precautions you can and live your life, especially if it's not something that is.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: like it's not it doesn't sound like it's out of the blue but

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: E.

jamie peacock: No, but It was young. And... The one doctor, no, he's just not taking his meds. And they're like, no, no, he's taking his meds because they thought the cleaning staff was stealing them. So they were very on top of the meds.

Curt: Oh, wow.

jamie peacock: Like they were making sure because they thought, hey, maybe the clean people are stealing them.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So they were doing like. counts every day to make sure that they're all there so They know.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: He was taking the meds. But anyway, yeah, moral of the story, don't get a brain shoot, man. Don't need meds.

Curt: Yeah, good luck folks. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yes. Good luck.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: um but yeah anyway back to the machining things um

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: What's happening with your anodizing?

Curt: Uh... I don't. no is the short answer but um I'm pulling I'm pulling all the unknown levers. ah so So last week I pulled the big unknown lever, which I thought was just the the anodizing solution.

jamie peacock: phosphates.

Curt: Because I feel like I had the cleaning, like... pretty freaking dialed um like i've been stressing about that pretty hardcore.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: um So I pulled the the phosphates level. a lever and that helped definitely like i'm getting like much more consistent i did a bunch of low voltage anodizing this week um just because um'm I'm pulling another level and at lever and I have to wait on this one. but i'm so those colors came out beautiful they were the easiest to do that i've ever done they were incredibly consistent every part was identical which isn't usually the case for me um

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: some of them vary by just fractions of a volt but to get the same uniform color Much better. Um, The one thing I haven't changed in a very long time.

Curt: uh is my Etchint. the the edge i use multi -etch just because hydrofluoric acid is nightmare fuel and we can't I can't get hydrofluoric acid here, so I use...

jamie peacock: Okay.

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: And you shouldn't be using hydrofluoric acid anyways.

jamie peacock: knew you definitely should not be.

Curt: Yeah, it's like one of those that like it goes through your skin and dissolves your bones. It's like it's It's not

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Good stuff to play with. um Anyways. uh so but ah the the hydrofluoric i'm using or not sorry jesus christ uh multi -edge i'm using is technically out of date it's like it's older than it should be

jamie peacock: the multi -edge job.

Curt: And. I... think i'm getting uh according to claude anyways i'm probably getting all kinds of imbalances in that. so I should just replace that. So.

jamie peacock: Okay.

Curt: I ordered it. from the one company that sells it in Canada. and I don't mind dealing with them, but They actually lead into another one of my topics. um of just being annoyed by an ordering system.

Curt: ah So I ordered that. Like. literally like after our last podcast um and it should have been here in a few days and it's It'll be here by, I think. By the time this podcast comes out, it'll be here, which is a little longer considering it's coming from my own country, but...

Curt: is what it is.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: I gotta... Deal with. It. so uh That's my last kind of lever to pull so i'm really hoping that works so i'll update you guys next week

jamie peacock: Okay. Yeah. Because the itch.

Curt: but

jamie peacock: uh is part of your anal process so you clean everything then you etch runes and then antidotes.

Curt: Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah, and I've

jamie peacock: Okay, yeah, so...

Curt: I feel like I've changed every... element of that even the orders and like so we'll i have one more lever to pull technically which

jamie peacock: Well...

Curt: I will try after that and that is switching. from Uh, D or like DI water. over two, which should be the... purest form of water.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Trying. to go to um Or is DI being distilled? um I might try.

jamie peacock: I just told a guy.

Curt: Yeah, sorry, not not deionized.

jamie peacock: Yeah, not Gianna's job.

Curt: um Distilled should be the cleanest form of water you can get.

jamie peacock: Wow.

Curt: um But I'm technically

jamie peacock: it's definitely not And I can tell you right now, it's definitely not.

Curt: Well, that's that's what people are reading online. It depends on your source, because it should be distilled water coming from a...

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: a dis like Literally just pure H2O, yeah, from a still.

jamie peacock: from a stove.

Curt: um but there's varying degrees of how pure it can actually be in ppm wise it's

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: like zero so it

jamie peacock: Horrible. No.

Curt: Well, mine is like zero.

jamie peacock: Oh, it's your zero, okay.

Curt: Um, It's very good, but... That doesn't. I mean... everything. So anyways, I'll try deionized water as well.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: and and see if that works.

jamie peacock: So... So... multiple things My ice bar. um distilled water for my anode setup.

Curt: Mm hmm.

jamie peacock: I was getting 12 ppm. on a brand new bottle.

Curt: Okay, that's... Yeah.

jamie peacock: My RO system outputs 3 to 4. On a bad day.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: on a good day it's like one to two

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: um My wire cutter where I used to work had a... um the dr system in it so it would set the resistance of the water 250 ohms.

jamie peacock: so it would

Curt: okay

jamie peacock: Pump through the resin. get it to 50 and then it would as it would go out it would pump through the resin again and get it back to 50 50 ohms Um, I don't know what that boom's... distance was but that's what the wire cutter wanted so i'm wondering if you might have a conductivity issue Because your water is...

jamie peacock: Not the right conduct. rod level of conductivity.

Curt: Yeah. I mean... It shouldn't. Matter because like. you can like i i could anodize in this can of coke Like...

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It just needs to be conductive.

jamie peacock: 100%.

Curt: but at high volt. like more conductive should help at higher voltages but that's not true either because i've i made a stupid concentrated solution of of uh

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: uh, uh, electrolyte.

jamie peacock: TSP. baking soda.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Um, 10 times stronger than it should be just to see what happened. And you get bad results. So there is a sweet spot. End.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It's about 0 .5 % for the people that are listening.

jamie peacock: Okay. Coos. I mean, an RO system is like... I think I paid $70 for my last one. They're cheap as beans.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: um and it gets you pretty freaking clean water mark

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: That's what I use for for my Anna

Curt: ah And i can i like i I can get commercial RO water like super close. That's what I usually do. I just buy it and like whatever. Right. 20 liter jugs because it's just it's cheap And it's good.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: um

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: So i'll I'll try all the waters. If that's the issue, I'll start trying.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: And then if that still doesn't work, then I'll go the nuclear route and... by just like by a few liters of like lab grade. water of just like Like. perfectly clear water.

Curt: And like.

jamie peacock: So I used to...

Curt: But...

jamie peacock: when i was water cooling my pcs i used to go to the pharmacy and bar distilled water at the pharmacy.

Curt: Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm.

jamie peacock: And I could put on my MedicLade, which was great. um

Curt: Ooh. Nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah, i also figure out exactly which brands of condoms I could put on my medical aid um

Curt: but

jamie peacock: It wasn't all of them. um

Curt: Oh no?

jamie peacock: No, it wasn't. it was Certain ones would would go through on the medical aid, others wouldn't, so it was great. So I figured all that shit out the hard way.

Curt: Oh weird.

jamie peacock: um But yeah, i I used to buy distilled water from there and then I was buying distilled for the Anno setup and that was like the biggest cost on Anno.

Curt: Huh.

jamie peacock: was buying distilled water every time because every time i ran about your ammo

Curt: Mm.

jamie peacock: i was burning through like 10 20 liters of water because i'm rinsing with uh

Curt: Mmm.

jamie peacock: with Distilled as well. now the ro system like that thing paid for itself with the bolt belts Saints on.

Curt: Yeah, I tried to use RO for everything because it's dirt cheap.

jamie peacock: Nice. Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, same thing.

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: my My distilled water is rather spendy, but... We'll see. So.

jamie peacock: But you're curious curious to see if you managed to come out with the other things

Curt: Yeah, I'm... i'm I'm leaning towards it being the etch now, but... well We'll find out together because other people are doing this and it's not like the other thing is other people are doing this on commercially pure titanium like cp2 um

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: which is like great too, which is. wildly different, like anodizing pure titanium. Much easier when you're not doing an alloy with other shit mixed into it.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: I just don't want to switch to cp2. So

jamie peacock: No, CP2's gummy as hell.

Curt: Yeah. We'll see.

jamie peacock: Um...

Curt: Yeah, exactly. so

jamie peacock: So I don't know if you saw AJ's flood video.

Curt: It's on my feed. I haven't watched it yet, but i was yeah, I heard him ranting about it.

jamie peacock: Okay. Well... Slot spoiler. You know he's got a powder coat booth.

Curt: Okay. Yes.

jamie peacock: Yes, he wants to make you insert an Anno booth.

Curt: Oh, okay, cool.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so i'll when I'm there visiting him. just for mts i'll have a chat some about it i designed racking for my

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: for mine I finally got around to designing the wrecking on Friday night. So my mate's got ah access to a laser cutter.

Curt: Ooh, okay, cool.

jamie peacock: So I'm going to go give him my sheet of titanium and be like, cool, cut me like three sets of this racking. Let me check that it works. Once it works, I'm just gonna blast that whole sheet into racking. because my racking is like on its last legs it was

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: cut a guillotine the sheets of titanium into strips And then I literally made them with tin slips. cutting the shapes and then tick welding them together

Curt: oh

jamie peacock: So now I've designed it that it's all, you bend a little tabs, push them through and then twist the tab.

Curt: Haha.

jamie peacock: and it locks everything together.

Curt: Oh, sick. Smart.

jamie peacock: And then...

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: i've got it there because i've now got a conductive titanium ball across my anna rig and i just drop them in and it makes contact so much better, like the single best upgrade that I've done.

Curt: Nice, nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Because I actually need to run ammo.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: I might run out of today. I need to make a grey anchor point.

Curt: Do your I'm assuming then with time even though it is titanium they get beat up like do they do they get eroded away or they just Happy.

jamie peacock: They don't give a shit.

Curt: Okay, cool.

jamie peacock: So the problem with like using aluminum racking pins, they single use.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: aluminum racket you have to you run it then you have to etch it edge off the anodise.

Curt: Sure.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: And then you forget them in the etching tank and they disappear.

Curt: Oh, you're right. yeah Okay.

jamie peacock: yeah so i've i switched started to titanium a long time ago so like the anchor points are made are bought six mil titanium pinning and thread at the ends So, like even now, the...

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: um The handy seamen have an M5 hole in them. that is used only for anonymizing racking that i can screw the racking pin into it And there you go, I have electrical conduct.

Curt: Mm, okay.

jamie peacock: Connection? Fucking anodize, no problem.

Curt: Mm -hmm.

jamie peacock: Um, Yeah, like the titanium is the way to go. like the problem is buying small racking is not not really a thing Like everyone does those giant sunflowers. Those don't fit in my tanks.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: So I'm making individual racks that I can stack four parts per rack. And then I can put six racks in the tank if I want. if I have the surface area for it

Curt: Yeah, yeah

jamie peacock: um But yeah, the ano that the titanium lasts forever.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: it doesn't get affected by the acid

Curt: Okay, cool. Okay, that makes sense.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like even my heat exchangers got a titanium plate on it

Curt: Right, okay, yeah.

jamie peacock: No.

Curt: It's...

jamie peacock: and that's

Curt: It's hard to... it's hard to piss off titanium but i have realized there's a few things that do piss it off and they're

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: like I didn't even realize it. I'm like, oh. I didn't know that would. make you angry. so

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: but so i found that the nylon fittings i use for my heat exchanger fail after about a year they just get brittle from the acid exposure

Curt: Mm hmm.

Curt: Oh, okay, okay.

jamie peacock: From the acid fumes. And they literally just crumble.

Curt: Mmm, okay.

jamie peacock: That's how I lost my last tank of acid. So it's something I might just buy some ptfe in terms of ptfe fittings

Curt: Yeah, as I say, there's got to be plastic that's just immune to it.

jamie peacock: No. Oh yeah, PET is also... Pretty, uh... chemically immune

Curt: Hmm, okay.

jamie peacock: Like I've got my heat exchangers PET and titanium. Like it's a PET block. that i'm all the channel into slapped piece titanium with an o -ring and then turn little PT packs that are tapered.

Curt: Mm hmm.

jamie peacock: that you push into the undercut and you just

Curt: o

jamie peacock: grab with a pair of pliers and they compress the o -ring outwards

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Yeah, because the Anno setup needs to move now.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: I'm tired of having it at home. um Yeah, this has been the ongoing fucking thing for weeks. i just need to figure out what i'm doing in that in the anode room i want to protect the floor because inevitably you drop dye and stuff onto the floor

Curt: right Yeah.

jamie peacock: and it's a bit of a wet process. I'm thinking of maybe just making a raised section that slants down to a point that I can pump the crap out of. Um, and just build it as nice as i can build it

Curt: Yeah. Yeah, I guess.

jamie peacock: Look.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Put a little bit of extra effort in up front. um But yeah, we are. Yeah. It's on the list of shit to do.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: Oh. I didn't put it in there.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: out designing you reckon i did i thought i put it in the document Um,

Curt: Yeah, I thought

jamie peacock: Yeah. i'm like i'm pretty sure i put it in there um

Curt: How?

jamie peacock: No.

Curt: How's the little, ah how's just between your... topics there. How's your little A1 mini going?

jamie peacock: Oh, it's a beast other than the nozzle it came with being fucked.

Curt: Oh no.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so the nozzle it came with I don't know if I got a partial jam or what Anyway, I was farting shit like it was just it wasn't printing properly And I ordered a spare a set nozzle spare set of nozzles, put a 0 .6 in. When I took the 0 .4 out, I see it's leaking at the top.

jamie peacock: So I don't know if it got jammed and just forced from I don't know. Now it's printing beautifully.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: I don't know if you saw my post.

Curt: Oh, nice. Okay.

jamie peacock: from my story this week of the handy semen packaging

Curt: I don't think I did. No, I don't think I did.

jamie peacock: Oh, geez. One moment, please. um Just find I'll chat quick

Curt: Sending shit on the podcast.

jamie peacock: You're saying shit on the podcast. We need a song for this.

Curt: Sandy.

jamie peacock: Should we try summon Jacob to make us a song?

Curt: Yeah. That boy's busy.

jamie peacock: He is. Oh, we actually hung out on Discord on... Oh, it's on WhatsApp. uh on wednesday because i was stuck at the shop uh up wanting some stuff

Curt: Okay, thanks.

Curt: Oh, okay. Let me see here.

jamie peacock: So we ended up having a Wednesday hangout. Underscore.

Curt: Ooh.

jamie peacock: Because I was bored, so I just hopped in. Yeah.

Curt: Pretty.

jamie peacock: Gridfinity.

Curt: I like that. Yeah, gridfinity with the with the purple. It looks pretty.

jamie peacock: Yes, so the last three layers, I just do a color change. So I do a pause, do a color change, and then carry on printing.

Curt: I like that. That looks nice. That print looks nice too.

jamie peacock: Yes. A little bit of warping.

Curt: o

jamie peacock: Like literally it's pulling the magnetic bed off of the magnets. in the corners.

Curt: Fair. Yeah, okay.

jamie peacock: Yeah, not good.

Curt: It's... it's Sizable.

jamie peacock: It's a Pretty big print. But yeah, A1 Mini's awesome.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: And then Joshua from Firmworks was printing something on his Ender -3. And I'm like, get A1 mini. Because I've been telling him to get A1 for a while. And the next morning I wake up to a post.

Curt: ah

jamie peacock: I'm admitting defeats in real time. I bought A1 Mini because his M3's print failed. and he's like no this thing's freaking magic like

Curt: How nice.

jamie peacock: It's what printing was sold to us to be. 10 years ago.

Curt: Yes.

jamie peacock: Like...

Curt: Yeah, that's... Yeah.

jamie peacock: other than mine having a retarded nozzle. Um, It prints. Beautifully. lock absolutely beautifully so i put a 0 .6 because i like speed Um,

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: But I mean, we printed spindle as printed a -hour spindle liner only to discover that the bore was the wrong size.

Curt: buber ah

jamie peacock: Yeah, it was it was oversized, but... Not enough, so it was tarts on the ball. So I ended up just making a spindle line out of a piece of PVC conduit.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Much quicker. Took me like three hours to print the TPU ports. Slid them onto some super glue, there you go, spindle on and done. Because, uh...

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: uh yes y 'all spindle on that actually reminds me Proper spindle liners. are critical.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: So we've been running production. We've yeah we've been having feeding issues. as of late

Curt: Mm hmm. Okay.

jamie peacock: And it's on a part to make $200 ,000 of a month. And we're having like weird feeding issues. And we're using a printed spindle liner, the parametric one that I made. But it's that long So the bar is dipping and doing all sorts of weird shit in there.

jamie peacock: in the spindle ball. So we made a spindle liner. We have it. I haven't had a feeding issue since.

Curt: Mm, okay.

jamie peacock: So yeah, make proper spindle liners, don't fuck around.

Curt: Good.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Now yesterday the machine made 400 parts while I was there

Curt: I was a...

jamie peacock: Zero feeding issues.

Curt: Oh nice, that's awesome.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Although... having said that we picked up the weirdest of issues So... The tap was starting to get a bit long in the tooth So Carl put in a new tap.

jamie peacock: He was on the third part. It was running in auto. First part was fine. I walked over had a look and i watched the machine thread in Yoink back and snap the top.

Curt: Weird.

jamie peacock: So I'm like, what the fuck? This is a brand new tap. like It's made three fucking parts. so i'm like okay that's really weird

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: We put another tap in, thought it was just like the collet wasn't tight or something. Put an old tap in.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Same thing. Threads in. Wrap it on and yoinks the tap off. So I'm like, fuck, what is going on here? So I'm like, okay. Leave the tap out. Let's run the cycle again.

jamie peacock: Let's run the socket again. Threadzen? Yoinks out, like full rapid art. Like, what the fuck? So, okay. Maybe the... The Linux CNC has just hit a fucking wobbly.

jamie peacock: Close the line, XCNC, open it again. Retouch off. No tap, run the same cycle. threads in. Rapids out. So what the fuck? so okay maybe the mesa cards hit a wobbly Power down the machine.

jamie peacock: Power the machine back up. Touch off again, run the same cycle. threads in Rapids out. So. What the fuck is going on? so MDR?

jamie peacock: 300 RPM. rigid tapping cycle just the hand coated Threads and threads off. 500 RPM. threads in, threads out. 750 rpm Threads in, rapids out.

jamie peacock: So I'm like, what the fuck is going on here?

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: I don't know if the encoder has got coolants in it or something.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: But we had to s slow our program to 500 RPM and now it's running fine. But all of a sudden. Just won't rigid tap out at, uh... 750.

Curt: weird Weird.

jamie peacock: Super weird, like just all of a sudden. It's like it, lu so when I was doing the hand -coated one.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: with the 750rpm thread in and then stop.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: It wouldn't wrap it up.

Curt: Okay, okay

jamie peacock: So I don't know if... We're not getting the pulses out. the way it's expecting them at half p .m but like just all of a sudden Doesn't want to do it anymore.

Curt: Weird. Weird.

jamie peacock: Yeah, really really weird one Um... I... the it's a finuc encoder it's sealed it shouldn't be a problem Um... getting to it's a real nightmare so i don't really want to poke at it

Curt: Is it?

jamie peacock: Um...

Curt: Is that one running on a Pi?

jamie peacock: It is. par four with a 7c81

Curt: Is your Wi -Fi on?

jamie peacock: No.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: it is disabled because of that fucking issue um i actually need to disable the waffle on the m code because it's

Curt: Okay. Okay. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah. The end card, I need to just take that SD card out.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: duplicate it, and then update one of them. Because the, it is un - It's unstable. Every now and again, Linux NC crashes on that machine.

Curt: Yeah, that's that's the one.

jamie peacock: Mostly when you edit programs.

Curt: That's the one thing I found is on my on my lathe it runs a crap ton of production and then just once in a while it would fault out it's a safe fault because it just i like i put so much stupid error checking in my uh like in my

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: ah Not in the program itself, but and not even the HAL file. I can't remember where I hid it. Whatever.

jamie peacock: Is it for your turret you're error checking?

Curt: Doesn't matter. um it's It's for my turret. Yeah, it's for my turret.

jamie peacock: Yeah. I added that for mine as well.

Curt: um So just. Yeah, and it would just be like, it'd fall out. I'm like, oh. okay you got angry and then i would just like reboot it and it'd be fine again for like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: weeks months and then fall but it was

jamie peacock: So... What I've noticed... if I have a flash drive plugged in the usb drive

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: It crashes more regularly than if there isn't one plugged in.

Curt: yeah

jamie peacock: So I'll plug one in, transfer the program over, unplug it. and then it's pretty stable, but then you'll run like a thousand parts, go to change program to run something else, you'll open the program to edit it, and it just shits the bed.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, yeah. and i

jamie peacock: but your version you haven't updated yours have you Since you built it Ours are both on the same version.

Curt: No.

jamie peacock: Because they were both at the same time? We've got the same version.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: The... one on calls machine and on the good way Super rock solid.

Curt: Interesting. Interesting.

jamie peacock: Yeah. There's been some serious ah updates, but yeah obviously with all the all the fun turret stuff, you don't really want to go fuck with it.

Curt: well and it like it happens infrequently enough that i just don't care and usually mine was because the wi -fi was on and it's just it's just that much more load on the system and it's just like ga And it's like.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Okay. Yeah.

Curt: I don't know if I did. call it every so like it's maybe one every i mean it depends on what you're doing but like it's maybe one every I don't know 2000 tool changes. And it just.

jamie peacock: Okay.

Curt: It just hits a point where it's like. i don't know what the turret is i'm like okay just start and stop it and it's happy and it goes again so it's not like annoying to recover from but it's just like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Once in a blue moon, I'm like, hey, you're doing you're stopped. Why are you stopped? I'm like, oh, your thing again.

jamie peacock: That's... yeah That's the biggest update I did to the Emco turret code was adding error checking

Curt: But.

jamie peacock: because it didn't have it.

Curt: Told you, yeah.

jamie peacock: because the people who retrofit inko's are hobbyists if it crashes once in a while who cares

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: It's like you're watching it run.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm not watching it run. It's left to fucking run. And that error checking, like within 10 minutes of having it implemented, it caught the first crash.

Curt: oh yeah it saves so many pairs of pants for me because same thing i would just have to rely on me catching it like good luck catching an error that you only see every three months yeah

jamie peacock: No.

jamie peacock: Whoa. I was. I would be in the house watching TV and go out to check on the EMCO and the EMCO's crashed. and now it's smoked my central my collards like a whole bunch of tools because i thought it was on tool one it was on tool two and it slammed the center drill into the spinning chuck.

Curt: Yep.

jamie peacock: So yeah. It got expensive. Bye. We implemented that. It literally took us like less than two hours to implement, and it's now. Good luck. that If it misses a tool change...

jamie peacock: It doesn't change checks. If it isn't correct, it does the tool change again. until it hits the right tool.

Curt: Mm. Yeah.

jamie peacock: And yeah, that's worked that's worked flawlessly.

Curt: Yeah, I'm sure I could actually put recovery in mine, but I just put it so like... I'm like, do a tool change. Check your tool change.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Wait a very, very small section of time because that was what my issue was. like wait basically a settling time and then check again and are you still happy it's like carry on and

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, that catches everything for me, which is lovely.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah, that's ah the stuff that real machines do by themselves.

Curt: Yeah, totally. Exactly. Yeah. Like wait 40 milliseconds and check again. Like it's inconsequential, but yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: it's it

jamie peacock: Yeah, no mine mine actually takes a while to finish the tool change because it checks and then I think there's a... delay after that as well. but I don't really care the machine runs.

Curt: Mm.

jamie peacock: like it made 500 it made 500 pots yesterday while i was at the shop for seven hours

Curt: Totally. Yeah.

jamie peacock: That machine made 500 pots, the Goodway made 400.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: I processed 600 on the... Uh... on the LK.

Curt: That's a lot.

jamie peacock: I loaded a thousand parts. Well, I loaded 500 parts twice. uh in and out of fixtures Yesterday to process 500 little PTV caps and then was doing another job as well

Curt: Yeah, it doesn't sound like fun.

jamie peacock: Look. It was fun. We did 1 ,500 parts in seven hours. It's not too bad. Although there were no podcasts because people are not doing podcasts anymore.

Curt: No doubt, yeah

jamie peacock: um there was no business machine this week it was very disturbing

Curt: Yeah, what gives? Chop, chop, people.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so yeah, come on keep schedule so I had to watch YouTube

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so it's YouTube headphones and just loading parts like it's a two two minute 40 cycle and it takes me two minutes to load the pallet

Curt: Ugh.

jamie peacock: So 40 seconds you can do fuck all luck

Curt: yeah Yeah, exactly.

jamie peacock: No.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: But it was fun.

Curt: fun

jamie peacock: We got lots of parts done. um but yeah so What can you tell me about? w Wait, before we discuss moped lasers. we have patreons patrons make the wheels on the minecart go round and round Just to make a

Curt: Bugger, bugger, bugger, bugger.

jamie peacock: Make Kurt happy there.

Curt: I love it.

jamie peacock: Yeah, Patreon's all good.

Curt: Love that sound.

jamie peacock: to get access to the after show. uh and the google form that i don't know if kurt has made yet

Curt: ah i ah was Didn't Danica make a form in the last podcast?

jamie peacock: She did, but that wasn't for the patrons. That was for the meetup.

Curt: Okay, I looked at that and I was like, oh shit, Danica. took my i'm like oh jamie's gonna yell at me oh will he be mad

jamie peacock: No, no, we need to make one for... No, we need one specifically for the Patreons that is formatted so that it works with your shipping stuff.

Curt: Sick.

Curt: Okay, I will do that because I saw it and then I was like fuck I have to do that Um, so yeah yell at me patrons if I don't ah you're just not gonna matter You're not gonna be able to yell at me, but

jamie peacock: Here we go.

Curt: Yell at me in thought.

jamie peacock: Well. Yeah, you know where to find them. that confounded machine on Instagram.

Curt: No. I guess. Yeah. You can yell at me there too. Yeah, for sure.

jamie peacock: Yeah. um But yeah, the patrons make the wheels on the minecart and train go round and round. thank you to all the patrons the the everyone on the six dollar and above tier get access to the after show because i normally discuss some random shit um And the top tier patrons all get a shout out every week. And those guys are Jade from Benchmark. Yeah.

jamie peacock: from Benchmark 20, Luke from Fabtastic, AJ from Subtract Manufacturing, Jason S, EJ from Maternal Welding, The Aussie Machinist, Christian Olsen, Charles Watt, Carl from Cursed Machine, Matt from Off -World Gear, Alex B, John from Tursin Performance and Engine Tricks, Matt from Modern Fuel, Josh from Later Machine, Greg from Tabletop Machine Shop.

jamie peacock: and Jesse from DataPro. Oh, and Ben from Prickly Prototypes. prototypes i got it right this time also i mixed up matt and uh

jamie peacock: Mats and Mats. Okay, that's why I mixed it up. From off -world gear and modern fuel. Now that everyone is talking about the testing.

Curt: ah Okay, okay.

jamie peacock: of the knife. it's not modern fuel it's off -world gear um but yeah got them mixed up but anyway thank you patreons for making the wheels on the minecart go round and round

Curt: um la la but la

jamie peacock: Now let's let's hear about... ah Kurt's Mopa stories.

Curt: okay so i'm an idiot um so uh i have that like brand deal um with laser pecker um Which is... been fine whatever like Um...

Curt: They, and like some people have actually sent me messages and be like, Hey, I saw you on like a, you'd add through like laser pack or your, your.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: famous on them and was like oh yeah i don't get i don't see them but uh Other people have. so But which also has a side effect of now. a lot of competing companies are seeing those ads. And then they reach out to me. um and ask me if I want. a laser.

Curt: And. It's like, well, I currently have this brand deal, so I can't review any units. like right now.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Um, But one company reached out to me and they do like... Bigger. uh like mopa lasers Um, So I was like, oh, well.

jamie peacock: Ooh.

Curt: I'm like, well, they're regional to me. So I'm like, let's ask for the world because they're like, do you want to review our new like 30 watt? whatever, whatever, whatever.

jamie peacock: yeah

Curt: And I was like, No, like I'm like, ah no, like the even the one I'm just. laser i'm reviewing here it's like it's not designed for production. It's designed for hobbyists and it's designed for...

Curt: prototyping it just it's not going to handle production and uh So I'm like, no, I like. i i i can't i like it's gonna be useless to me i'm like however i'm like you have ah like 100 watt. uh or 60 watt and 100 watt mopa lasers and i'm like i'd be moderately interested in that but like For that to work, I needed to integrate with this, this, and this.

Curt: And they're like, okay, well, how about... Like we could change you over to a 60 watt. um MopaLaser that you could use for your products in return for you know x amount of videos and i'm like okay like ah but and this is the fun thing because i'm like if someone reaches out to you like if any of these companies ever reach out to anybody listen like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: They're reaching out to you. So. ask for the world, like ask for the world or ask for whatever you want.

jamie peacock: Yeah, you have all the power.

Curt: Yeah. You have all the power.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Ask for what you want. And like, and. Like, basically... take whatever they're offering you and be like, no, I'll give you less videos, but you give me more product. And if you don't want it, that's okay. Like go pound sand. um So that's what I did. and uh eventually i i i sent them i'm like okay i want to make this tell you tell you like This is the product I want to make.

Curt: I can only make it with the fourth axis. and i i'm gonna need a lot of power to do it um because i'm doing the production sense and like i have and i think that was the thing is like i had the design finalized i'm like if you want actual production content like to show your people.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: This is a production job that I have to do. um so anyways they went to their design team they're like yeah they're like 100 watt is way more suited for you so like send us your address we'll get you 100 watt Mopa um fiber laser and a fourth axis.

Curt: So I was like, sick. So yeah, we'll see if that.

jamie peacock: Nos.

Curt: So yeah, I'm just waiting to see if... ah what their shipment is going to be but yeah it looks like i'll get a 100 watt mopa fiber. and a fourth. Like. A little more.

jamie peacock: fancy

Curt: proper like one of the big standalones with like a big cooling tower and everything so yeah

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Be kind of fun.

jamie peacock: Yeah. proper

Curt: So we'll see how that works out.

jamie peacock: proper laser

Curt: yeah and like i have enough products to put through it so i'm like yeah you want some content on this? Sure. and So anyways, I'm excited.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Nice.

Curt: See how that see how that pans out. Yeah. We'll see.

jamie peacock: Fancy. um

Curt: Yeah, so then I can sell this little. Little, uh... Tiny guy.

jamie peacock: Yeah, the laser pecker.

Curt: Yeah, exactly. and Whatever. it's i mean You pay for it in time, so I got to buy one regardless.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: This one is rather spendy, so it's much more worth my time to crank out a few videos on it. like each I think I in total, I'd have to do like. i think What did I agree to them? I think I have to do eight, and it's like a...

Curt: it's going to be like a $12 ,000 unit or something like that. so

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: each video like It gives me more room to do a video and not feel like I'm just... absolutely wasting time so

jamie peacock: Yeah. Okay. Lost.

Curt: We'll see.

jamie peacock: Influencer Kurt

Curt: Yeah. So.

Curt: influencer and just laser influencer that's all i'm gonna be because like they just keep

jamie peacock: Yeah. Apparently.

Curt: And... I couldn't figure out why I was getting contacted. I'm like, oh, I see why. Because they're watching their competitors, obviously.

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: So anyways.

jamie peacock: Yeah, no, that'll do it.

Curt: We'll see how that goes.

jamie peacock: Oh, .

Curt: Maybe they'll find a prettier influencer and be like, fuck you.

jamie peacock: Cheese.

Curt: be like ah Okay, well, it is what it is. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Uh... Ciao.

Curt: So. Um,

jamie peacock: Which one do you want to...

Curt: Uh... I'll... Actually, I'll grab it another one because you got, well, you know, we're we're even and even. um Tell me about how your customers are breaking spindles. who

jamie peacock: So. You remember the Masso retrofit?

Curt: Oh no. Yeah.

jamie peacock: So I think somebody kicked the air gauge On the... inlet to the machine on the regulator So they had the regulator set to six bar.

Curt: Mm hmm.

jamie peacock: And I got a message the other day, hey, the machine's not unclamping the tool. So I'm like, just check your air pressure. Sounds like that's what the issue is.

Curt: Mm hmm.

jamie peacock: And then I heard nothing Got a phone call on... Tuesday. the machine won't let go of the tool. Okay. go push the fucking and button on the solenoid i want to know like i'm trying to know i'm trying to remotely figure out where the problem is They ended up putting a gauge in line.

jamie peacock: three and a half ball

Curt: Oh, yeah, there's...

jamie peacock: Not eight. so they turned the pressure up to eight

Curt: There's a problem.

jamie peacock: on the gauge and it was reading on the new gauge three and a half bar. The problem is the valves are internally ported. So there was enough air pressure coming in. To trigger the valve,

jamie peacock: Not enough to release the tool. And when they took the voltage off the valve, So in the... when they Told the - spindle to clamp again the valve stayed in the unkempt position Because it didn't have enough pressure to...

jamie peacock: to drive the plunger back and then they turned the spindle on and melted the encoder in the spindle.

Curt: Sure.

Curt: Oh no!

jamie peacock: because it's a a router spindle. It's got the main motor. the encoder and then the Trouble. cylinder above They fucking smoked it. So they phoned me in a panic.

jamie peacock: And. that i know it's still in release we checked we've got eight bar there i'd like strip the thing and see what's going on Um... they're like oh this thing's melted again that makes no difference we're not using the encoder What? it literally makes no fucking difference get it put it back together get it to work the machine won't know any different So in I'm like to put a pressure gauge up on the head.

jamie peacock: right before they're valves. that you just Double check it. Make it part of the ASAP in the morning. Check that there's eight by there. or six ball, whatever it is. So they've done that and then I ordered them a pressure switch to put in the cabinet because there wasn't one which is kind of weird um So I ordered from China Land and it's a programmable one.

jamie peacock: but i bought the one that goes positive and negative so i can use it for my vacuum chuck on the machine as well

Curt: Okay. Okay.

jamie peacock: so that when it pulls the vacuum, I can have it flash a light if the vacuum's not right or whatever.

Curt: Oh, okay. Nice. Yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: yeah or talk to the machine if i really want uh but they were like 20 so i just bought four of them

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: but yeah they smoked a fucking that encoder gone but yeah apparently i assume they're going back together and running because i haven't heard from them

Curt: Mmm.

Curt: I assume it's like some sort of like ISO tool holder like without dogs or

jamie peacock: so

jamie peacock: Uh, yeah.

Curt: You don't need that.

jamie peacock: BT30 slash arsehole.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: um but yeah there's no drive dogs so it doesn't really matter

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: uh they i think the encoder was speaking back over canvas initially but we don't have canvas on a maso so i just fucking disabled it

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: but I think I put power there.

Curt: Right, okay.

jamie peacock: I don't even know why I put power there, but anyway. It's working. they've got a spare spindle on the other machine but they obviously don't want to pull it off because then that machine just becomes more and more fucked when they want to retrofit it.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: So yeah.

Curt: Right, you're right, yeah.

jamie peacock: and then i was like hey by the way i'm out of the country in september so They're rich. No retrofits for you in until October.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Look.

Curt: yeah They'll limp through. They'll figure it out.

jamie peacock: But yeah, no no the machine's running great. until there's no fucking air pressure. Let's see what we're doing. I'll go through there and throw in... pressure switch and then go look at their neighbor's machine that he wants me to retrofit So as soon as those come in, I'll take a drive out there one morning and just go and...

jamie peacock: Do that and deal with quoting. I've also changed the way that I quote retrofits now.

Curt: Okay. How's that?

jamie peacock: So that one.

Curt: You just triple them?

jamie peacock: No, so that one was time and material. um So 10 % markup on anything we buy.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: and then hours having hours of work that's how we build and i'm like Meh. It's now. Fixed cost. and materials. if i do it in two days good for me if i do it in two weeks well fuck i'm losing money

Curt: Over.

jamie peacock: But that way.

Curt: Okay. Yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm not. I'm not feeling like, fuck, okay, where can I build these oaks? Like, how can I make up hours to make it worth my while? So it's going to now just be a fixed cost for retrofits going forward and it's not going to be cheap.

Curt: Right. Yeah.

jamie peacock: It's going to be, this is my price. If you don't like it, fuck off.

Curt: Yeah, that that makes sense though.

jamie peacock: That it's worth yeah that is worth me going to site and spending five days there.

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: Uh, yeah.

Curt: What, especially if you have cock?

jamie peacock: Because the problem is... Yeah.

Curt: Like when you have confidence in your skills to do it. Yeah, do it that way because...

jamie peacock: 100%.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Because, well, the problem is, like, now this week we made molds. I started on Wednesday, the customer phone. i It needs to be done by the end of the month. So I had pushed it, pushed it, pushed it. Like I wanted to get it done earlier in the month. He phoned me and said, when are the molds done? I'm like, next week Wednesday.

jamie peacock: He's like, okay, as long as it's by Wednesday, not any later. I'm like, okay, no worries. I'll get cracking on it. The material's here. I just haven't had a chance to put it in the machine. I started on Wednesday, I was done on Friday evening.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: And...

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: on on There was... a 20 30 um 40 hours of machining? In three days?

Curt: A lot. What?

jamie peacock: four Four hours of surfacing. on the big cavity so Literally was there on Wednesday night at. 10 o 'clock in the evening. to rough the part. clear the shavings because they've long shavings that i'd wash down clear the shavings hit cycle start to do the finishing and went home at Ransel 2 in the morning.

Curt: Nice. That's the best ones.

jamie peacock: And then friday morning Thursday morning set up the next one. Let it run for the morning. By lunchtime, it was done. Ran off the other parts. they're all done i just need to give them a quick sand and they can go out So I powered through that bit like that.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: job is running at a stupid hourly rate Which makes... Doing other shit really difficult to like. I'd rather be doing mold work than be doing other shit.

Curt: Right. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Especially considering it runs while I do other work.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah, exactly.

jamie peacock: Yeah. like so i really wish i got The LK hooked up to Home Assistant is ready. but I haven't. Because I would have loved to have seen my uptime on it.

Curt: Oh, yeah yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: New high score.

jamie peacock: ah Even now, I've got... i've got mag bases to run this week and i'm going to spindle grip them i'm just going to i'll spend some time today design the trays put them on the laser today and then even if i'm only running 10 at a time because that's the amount of acrylic i have um At least it's running while I'm doing something else. I'm not having to load a part every three minutes.

Curt: Yeah. Totally.

jamie peacock: Because I've got 60 mag bases to make for stock. and send off anonymizing. So I want to... automate that process.

Curt: Makes sense.

jamie peacock: And for that, we will use the first of the production handy semen.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: Marwan has been retired officially.

Curt: Oh yeah?

jamie peacock: The first prototype one has been retired. I've now got a production handy semen in the machine

Curt: better to use the production anyways that way you can you can find the shortcomings yeah

jamie peacock: Yeah 100 % They are none. it's perfect

Curt: There are none.

jamie peacock: um

Curt: It is perfect.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: Go buy them.

jamie peacock: um Now, also, I think the new cylinders are...

Curt: Hi, Andy. HandySemen .com.

jamie peacock: The new cylinders seem a bit tighter, the tolerances on the... on the slides

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: So there's a little bit this play we'll see I'm gonna run it and see what it does after couple hundred pots

Curt: Suck.

jamie peacock: But yeah it's running um done

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: buttoning those up so they can ship out. I'm waiting on... I need to build flats on the side lock holders. And then I can assemble. I do need to build an assembly jig that's the only problem.

jamie peacock: because I want the side lock flat to be aligned with the gripper. So I need to make a jig for doing this and actually getting it. aligned properly So that's a Monday morning problem.

jamie peacock: and then get them packed i've got to print another one of another two of those trays and then i can ship the orders out

Curt: Hm.

Curt: Cool. That's awesome.

jamie peacock: No.

Curt: Good.

jamie peacock: it's uh yeah and i made a little thing for the jaws not that it comes with jaws but then if you put it in your draw you've got somewhere for the jaws to go like

Curt: I like that shit. I like when people think of that kind of stuff.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: You're like, oh. You used your head. Or do you used this product and you figured it out. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Well, I have no intention of mine living in the fucking drawer, but... Like, I've got to ship it, so let me let me make it ship nicely.

Curt: But still, like... Yeah.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah, I...

jamie peacock: Not. No.

Curt: ah Yeah I love that.

jamie peacock: no It's kind of cool. So, yeah, I've got to make... ah a ported cap for it this week on Monday. Um, So apparently through spindle... A.

jamie peacock: Annyeong! Spindle has a check valve in it. So if you pressurize, it doesn't vent.

Curt: Okay.

Curt: Oh. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: Hmm. so you pressurize your grip and then you can't release so i'm going to make a little um effectively a grab screw or a little hex bolt that's got a 0 .75 hole through it.

jamie peacock: So when you push air, it's still enough. and The leak is not enough that it won't grip. But as soon as you take the air away, it vents and opens.

Curt: Right. Yeah. Yeah Smart.

jamie peacock: So I'm gonna make them on the mill because I'm a millbilly

Curt: Bill Billy.

jamie peacock: I can do them in one op on the mill. Mark. little hex bolts i can do in one op with a hole through the middle in the middle so i'm just gonna do them in the middle

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, that's it.

Curt: Yeah, one.

jamie peacock: Monday morning problem.

Curt: Nice. Nice.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Millbilly. I like that one.

jamie peacock: um Yeah. Anyway, um I managed to blast through most of mine.

Curt: Anyway.

jamie peacock: Okay, so. I'm kinda curious about the deburring thing.

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Okay, so leads a little bit into my... Anodizing is when I... When I do the IsoGrip pens, what I do is I like i machine them. I basically like have them rough finished or rough like rough hand finished And then I tumble them in non -abrasive media. for a bunch of time and that just takes off like any edges and burrs and whatnot um there's no there's no burrs but there's like they're sharp corners and you're holding it So you want it smooth.

Curt: But I also don't want to change the geometry at all. I just want it to... Not. Have. sharper like it's just micro radiuses on everything

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Um, which is it works great it works fantastically i pull it back out then i final finish them Um, and the ah like they still finish nice they're nice and bright um the pockets are still nice and shiny from like just tool marks i do want the tool marks i do want it shiny it dulls it a little bit which also changes the anodizing a little bit because now like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: if i hand like if i hand polish them you have a a bright polish and then a slightly less Harry, we're all done. Media has obviously been whacking it.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: so the anodizing isn't like You don't get a perfect uniformity. So what I would love to do. is just machine it. um And then just have. be able to skip the tumbling stage. um or like the blasting stage or whatever like skip those entirely um for like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: just to get the nice clean anodized look on both of them. But I can't because they kind of feel sharp in the hand. It's just on like I did. I think the first like 10 of. The pen or the first.

Curt: I don't know, maybe like the first. 10 or 20 of them i did without this process and like Most people were like. beautiful they look super nice they're like they're just a little sharp and i'm like they will wear in like But I'm like, I want to avoid that.

Curt: I don't want someone's first opinion to be.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: So now now I don't get that. feedback anymore. um But i The ideal way to do this, and it's the way I'm kind of... really not wanting to go is I put the pen blank in the fourth axis, machine all my crazy like iso grid patterns, whatever patterns I want to do in the future.

Curt: And then take like. a mic, like a ball nose. and just trace every single edge and just put like a half thou chamfer on everything.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: The one problem with that is that... The tubes that I put in.

jamie peacock: on Drowned Oh.

Curt: If they're not. Perfectly. if they're not perfectly round and if they're not perfectly on center and if they're not perfectly Like if there's a taper to the tube, even like even a one thou taper over these. four inch tubes, five inch tubes.

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: You'll notice it. You'll see it on these little micro chamfers and it won't. It'll look. It'll look glaring. So I'm like. I know that's the right way to do it. And that's the way my brain wants to do it. But I have to make everything so perfect that I'm like, oh, that's going to make.

Curt: me hate life so i'm like i gotta figure out a better way to do this

jamie peacock: So what I'm hearing is you need to machine the tube in the fourth axis.

Curt: ah Oh, yeah machine the OD. like turn the od in the fourth axis yes that would solve my issues

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: for certain. That would solve it. Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm trying to find the the thing. Um, Have you considered using a deburring brush?

Curt: No, but that's...

jamie peacock: In the middle.

Curt: i I have, like, I have a... billion of those in my carts from various yeah i never thought about that that's actually a pretty good idea

jamie peacock: Then so that the trick there would be to get Your heart exactly right. that you're not hitting the bottom of the pocket so you're only hitting the od

Curt: Yeah, but that's that's easy enough, actually.

jamie peacock: And then just...

Curt: And then that's...

jamie peacock: we So use like a spiral tool path.

Curt: It's essentially following the... And it's following the same path that the tool that made it so like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It would. Like even if I stay off the bottom 5 ,000. It's still going to.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It's going to be accurate to the tube because everything is.

jamie peacock: I was just going to go.

Curt: Stationery.

jamie peacock: down on the tube on the top of the tube and then just spin the tube and slowly feed over

Curt: ah Sorry, yeah.

jamie peacock: Just so that it just just knocks the top edge. That would just deburr the top edge. Well, I can put that on the list of things I'm looking at at IMTS. Because there's a whole section for deburring.

Curt: that's a good idea i actually came i was like when i was trying to do internal deburring i came across a bunch of really cool sites that yeah like they'll have

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Birds that expand on the inside. I should... actually look into that more. Because I know a bunch of them have like nice plastic abrasive bristles that are firm enough.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: Yeah, that's a good idea actually.

jamie peacock: That's what I was thinking Then you get a brushed finish on your Audi.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: and that'll knock any your little birds off

Curt: Because I was thinking that.

jamie peacock: on one time.

Curt: I was thinking that already. I was like, I could technically, because of the fourth. Spins like the the fourth accent my mill spins like crazy quick

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: um so i could do the od turning with like a ball mill and just like follow along. I just didn't want to mile out my fourth axis.

jamie peacock: Yellow.

Curt: Um, But yeah, the burning brush is actually a good idea because that gives me just. A little bit of that.

jamie peacock: a little bit of give for if the tube runs out a little bit as well

Curt: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah, yeah, I do like that. I do like that idea. Okay, I'm going to write that down. i'm go Yeah, I'm going to look into that. Good idea. Thank you. Yeah, deburring brother.

jamie peacock: No worries, that's...

Curt: Deeperring brushes.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I've had a stupid idea by the way.

Curt: Okay. Okay, what's the stupid idea?

jamie peacock: I need a chip fan.

Curt: No.

jamie peacock: I've got a bunch of blades. I'm just gonna put some blades on a screw and put them in the tool holder.

Curt: i like this idea

jamie peacock: 12 ,000 rpm rpm. Like those props are rated to like 30 ,000.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: if they wear out put new ones only problem i don't like chip fans because they blow shavings

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: in funny places on my tool carousel.

Curt: And for the listener, Jamie just held up like a little drone with little...

jamie peacock: All right. Yeah. I'll hold up my 3 -inch drone.

Curt: with the little fan blades Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: oh yeah that would be Yeah, I don't like chip fans for that reason too, where you're just you're just blasting chips. everywhere they shouldn't be.

jamie peacock: Yup.

Curt: But...

jamie peacock: but so yeah i've had some i had some loading issues with running the knives

Curt: Mm.

jamie peacock: But the lands were pretty big so i think going forward what i'm going to do is i'm actually going to mill a slot into my jaw and press the dial pin in. so i've got three points of contour three lines of contact and then any shaving that lands is going to want to fall off of the point of contact

Curt: Right.

jamie peacock: uh either that or machine in little steps or something i don't know

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: We're learning.

Curt: Yeah. You totally.

jamie peacock: Now getting reliable processes is it's a challenge um i'm gonna spindle grip a whole bunch of uh

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Mag base is now, but those of you that don't give a shit, I'm doing off one. like i don't care if it's it's a little skew if there's shaving under as long as it grabs it rigidly enough i literally do not care um

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: because it goes into fixtures for up to

Curt: Yeah, or just upgrade your... coolant pump motor to something heinous and just go

jamie peacock: so the issue I was having.

Curt: Crazy.

jamie peacock: is the coolant was blowing straight on the pot and not going around the pot When I was loading with the vacuum gripper, yeah.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: So I've got provision for a blow -off in my... on my m codes there's pops run for it they just put a lock line pointing at the vast jaws and trigger a blow off for four wands

Curt: Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah.

jamie peacock: with a name code. So I should probably do that. But I am also going to be implementing some unloading stuff. so you put a end mill backwards and a holder next to the gripper. So when you unload the parts,

jamie peacock: you then change to that it drops down and just feeds across goes up and then... goes to load the next part that way if there's anything in the vase it'll push it off the sod.

Curt: He actually just made me think of something too. is I have air blasts on mine that I never use. tube. I should just put some...

jamie peacock: Yeah, M7

Curt: Yeah, I should just put my lock line on it and just point it at my spindle and then use it because I'm always blowing the coolant off the part after.

jamie peacock: oh yeah use it to clean the machine

Curt: I should use it. and Well, then i can just I can drive the nozzle to exactly where I want it so I'm not blowing. Chips into stupid places where I'm like...

jamie peacock: I have...

Curt: to

jamie peacock: I have literally done this.

Curt: blow blow blow blow Oh this is a good idea. I like this idea.

jamie peacock: i've done this before with my m7 i was doing what was i doing Let's do something with a short cycle time. but it was a bit it was pooling coolant so i just figured out where i wanted the machine the machine to be, so I just jogged it and...

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Hit the airblast button.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: uh with the line pointed and then i just added those like three lines of code So go to this position. m7 m9 and it would blast most of the coolant out so i could unload the parts

Curt: Yeah, that's a good idea.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Because I... I use it like the 256 threaded holes and I like to blow the coolant out so I can just test them but They're annoying because you blow.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: coolant out of a little hole and like i hide and i like i put my hand through the door and but i should let the machine go When it's done, it would take an...

jamie peacock: and you get it on your face Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Two seconds extra. and it'd be ready for me. Oh. Oh.

jamie peacock: Yeah. The machine has these features.

Curt: Why don't I think like, ah yeah. i say there it's a robot it doesn't care yeah that's a good idea okay It's a great podcast for me.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: learning all sorts of fun things

Curt: Yeah, I don't care if anyone listens to this. yeah okay

jamie peacock: So tell me about your printed racks because those things have always I've always found them entertaining. Like I think they're fucking awesome

Curt: Yeah, I found... Yeah, they're so useful. um Except i i tried to I made it like a... I made a nice version that has like a handle that I could dunk into my tanks and it like it would pull a whole set of eight parts out at once.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: And then it had. it had little baskets that magneted on anyways it was terrible it was so annoying um so i redid it and i bought magnets that are much more powerful um so it gets rid of the one annoying part where the Vasquez didn't stay on very well. And I started using it um for this last batch.

Curt: Mainly because I'm using like... tanks in tanks from ultrasonic now which is what they were designed for they were designed to fit in these little different

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: tanks of like solvents and whatnot Um, but it's so much it's so much better already now because like I can. so many of my parts are like matched um where they have to go together so this one has like little individual bays that keep all the light components like i can be like okay there's whatever eight sets in here

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: I know the order of everything so like I know which part goes to which pen body which goes to which clip which goes to which end cap and like I can keep them all perfectly and so in sync and I have two of them now I printed two of them So I can load one while the other one's cleaning and like. Yeah, it's...

Curt: It's way more better. um i should i'll i'll do like a story on it at some point Um, But yeah, I just use PETG. uh it seems to be good enough for ultrasonics up to like i run mine at about uh 50 60 degrees celsius

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Uh,

jamie peacock: I'm drawing my filaments at 60.

Curt: They seem to hold up.

jamie peacock: my ptg

Curt: Yeah. So it's like it.

jamie peacock: That's one.

Curt: it's It's fine. i did um I did my old ones out of ABS, but it's just that too like you don't need it. Um,

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: unless you want to be crazy um but yeah anyway so yeah it's i'm i'm super happy with how how well it works now just like

jamie peacock: us

Curt: Keeps parts from getting scuffed up too much. I do have to hold certain part like if parts have a really nice finish I have I built little like racks that hold them in specific ways so that like because ultrasonics even rubbing against plastic like you can get real weird wear marks so

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, ultrasonics are pretty violent

Curt: I... Yeah, I try to hold everything from like inside or hold it from like

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: areas that you wouldn't notice if there was a slight rob mark on it so yeah it's working much better.

jamie peacock: ah Yeah, we sent stuff to Anadas.

Curt: And...

jamie peacock: I don't know if I spoke about that, getting the stuff back from Anadas last week.

Curt: Uh... I don't think... i I don't think so. I don't recall anyways.

jamie peacock: Anyway, we send stuff to Anodos.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: um the mag bases on there's some metal scrap i know this um but pretty pretty decent yield all the sight mounts that I sent. Fucking can threaded holes. There's runs everywhere.

Curt: oh shit Bummer.

jamie peacock: Yeah. i'm like yeah that's what you get So I think I might need to get a bit better at anodizing and just do that shit Good luck. in -house. I just don't want to

Curt: Okay, that's why you wanted, yeah. uh yeah fair but

jamie peacock: Yeah. I just don't want to. Like, anodizing in ours is a fucking ball ache.

Curt: I don't know why everybody... I mean, I i know why everybody's terrible at it. It's because they're probably doing just massive sh...

jamie peacock: Well they just don't give a fuck.

Curt: shit where no one cares and it's such a low low cost thing yeah it's like No one likes their anodizers.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yep.

jamie peacock: Yeah, like the mag bases will keep going there because their colors are more constant than mine But all the other shit I do is in -house now. Like, fuck that.

Curt: Ugh. Bummer.

jamie peacock: So, yeah I don't know. I got a recommendation for some black dye that I must maybe try and organize before IMTS.

Curt: It's cool.

jamie peacock: apparently much cheaper than caswell and much better

Curt: Toko.

Curt: We win then.

jamie peacock: No. So I almost may be owning some

Curt: Sick.

jamie peacock: trying to remember who recommended it Just one of the guys on the Discord. So. i'll Go ahead and harass them. Um... Son.

Curt: Cool.

jamie peacock: Tell me about your better ordering system.

Curt: Okay, so this is funny because like it's something that I was annoyed by so ordering this multi -etch I'm annoyed because I'm looking at their site and I ordered it whatever, five days ago.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: And it shows like my status. Nothing has been updated. I'm like, well, I don't know if you've packed the order, if it's shipped.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Like I. I don't know anything about this. This is frustrating to me. Like if I just had data. It would be itd be helpful. it would i be I wouldn't have to send you a message and be like, hey, is this still pending?

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: Like, what's up? Um, And then I realized that. basically for anybody that orders from me, that's kind of the situation you're in. If you log into the site and you look at your order, that's always updated.

Curt: But nobody does that because like we live lives and like you're not just going to like.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: You want something that comes to your email that says like, hey. Your order is shipped. Here's your tracking. and usually from that people are happy if they have a tracking like link in their email Then they'll just go and check that and it'll update.

Curt: um But the problem with mine is I use so many services, like I use handoff services, that the tracking isn't updated nicely that way. um And sometimes a customer doesn't get an email at all. I'll get an email like a week after someone places an order and they're like, hey, is this like, are you going to ship this? and I'm like, oh shit, it's already shipped. Like it's it's out for delivery today. I'm sorry you didn't get like.

Curt: the updates and they're like oh sick that's the best result i'm like okay but like it's still annoying and i get it and by the time you're sending me that email you're probably already frustrated

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: So...

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: um i've Anyways, I found a comp our found an integration. It integrates with a million things. This is called Aftership. um I actually logged in with them like years ago but anyways i'm running that now So if anyone places an order with me, you'll get proper emails stating and they handle like all that like third party handoffs with like. All the stupid.

Curt: border clearance stuff i have to go through now it'll it'll go through every carrier and keep you updated

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: and it'll just like i can choose to send like I can send you an email on every update, which you don't want because then I need...

jamie peacock: That's kind of cool.

Curt: I turned into AliExpress and you get 900 emails a day.

jamie peacock: Noob.

Curt: Um, Yeah. But.

jamie peacock: No comment.

Curt: though yeah they'll get the one email of like here's your tracking and it's just constantly updated and you can just click it and see where your product is so yeah i'm i'm running that now it's It's a monthly thing again, got to pay for it, but.

Curt: I think it'll keep people happier.

jamie peacock: if it works, yeah

Curt: and If it keeps like...

jamie peacock: If you get the value. from it then it makes no difference

Curt: If he keeps like... one or two emails out of my inbox. It pays for itself in my time. And then not to mention, it makes for everyone else happier. So that's a win -win. Yeah, I'll run that.

jamie peacock: 100%.

Curt: See if it works.

jamie peacock: Okay, nice.

Curt: Yeah. How about you? you like Your last topic here is new coolant.

jamie peacock: Yes. Yes, I finally brought Monica to the workshop and...

Curt: How's that going?

jamie peacock: Sucks out my machine. through the new coolant it Does the coolant things? It works really well.

Curt: this

jamie peacock: um but i'm now noticing my fingers are feeling funny um

Curt: Uh oh.

jamie peacock: So this is the... Uh, Fuck, what is it? It's the BioCool. from FlexiLube which is what I had before.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: that I was getting that contact dermatitis with.

Curt: Right, right, yeah. You have the finger aids, yeah.

jamie peacock: And yesterday did I had my hands in the coolant all day. and

Curt: no

jamie peacock: My finger is looking weird, but I don't know we'll see I'll wash my hands and we'll see um if it persists then I'm gonna have to change away from it again. Um, But it yeah does the thing. It's a lot less soupy. then the mc The Frexy Cool MC.

jamie peacock: hmm um has resulted in a slight increase in tool off.

jamie peacock: As in 4X in stainless steel.

Curt: That's good. Oh, okay. that Okay, that's totally worth it then.

jamie peacock: Yeah. um We noticed that on a 316 job that we do. That's a repeat job. um last time we did it we were using still using the old coolant we've now switched to the mc And Carl was burning through an insert every three parts. He did ten parts with one insert, with one edge.

Curt: Nice. Nice.

jamie peacock: We were running another 316 job over the weekend. uh we were getting between 80 and 100 parts per per corner We got 200 parts on a corner.

Curt: Damn, okay. That's nice then.

jamie peacock: Like it's I turned the insert around because I was loading and a different setup and I didn't want it to fuck on halfway through it wasn't It wasn't poked yet. So definitely.

Curt: So you want this to work. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: um And then also like rigid tapping if the machine plays along.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: We'll do 2 ,000 parts on a tap, no problem.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: and steal luck.

Curt: Nice.

jamie peacock: so really not i'm really enjoying the mc it just gets a bit soupy with the whey oil if you leave the white oil like leave oil oil in it

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: it gets a bit thicker. So we've got an old vacuum cleaner that's being used to skim the whey oil off the tanks. Like it's dedicated to only skimming whale oil off tanks. so you pull it Don't need you.

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: Lean in and just suck the shit off the top. to try and keep it less soupy.

Curt: Yeah. yeah

jamie peacock: And then I need to suck out all the lades this week with Monica and just cycle the coolant.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: So just pump it all out, pump it all back in, just get all the... all the solids out of it

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: because the whey oil tends to make solids with that coolant. But your mom... so i made that uh the new chip tray for the back of the lk with 0 .1mm stainless steel mesh.

Curt: Mm -hmm.

jamie peacock: The whey oil and the MC literally made a layer across the mesh. So the coolant wasn't returning so I had to blast it out of the hose pipe

Curt: Oh.

jamie peacock: when I changed coolants. but now the aims the BioCool AL seems to be working really well. It's a lot thinner. It's a lot less viscous. um and getting pretty decent finishes in aluminium and in brass and in stainless so For an aluminium specific coolant, it's working pretty well.

Curt: Nice. Nice. Okay.

jamie peacock: So.

Curt: Yeah Sick. Cool.

jamie peacock: and doesn't leave oily residue everywhere because that shit was getting annoying

Curt: Yeah. very Fair, fair.

jamie peacock: yeah I'm also working on a coolant level monitor of monitor for my machine.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: So... toilet flow toilet bowl. the flutes

Curt: yay Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: with a stick. but i'm not going to have it go through a linear guide to a sense or something i'm going to have a four bar link so i'm going to have a potentiometer pivots and then two pivots and then we'll do that. And twist the tension.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: There's nowhere that shit can... Get jammed up.

Curt: Heh heh heh heh heh

jamie peacock: No, because that's the problem. Like, you got oh, cool, Linear Guard's great, right? Until it gets full of dust and... starts clogging.

Curt: Absolutely. Yeah.

jamie peacock: and then yeah it says your coolant's full and it isn't

Curt: no

jamie peacock: So I want it because coolant level. I've got about an... inch band where it needs to be for everything to work properly

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: And we were burning through on... Thursday

jamie peacock: Thursday so Wednesday I put 20 liters of coolants in the machine Thursday I put 40 liters of coolant into the machine

Curt: Yeah. that's a

jamie peacock: That's how much we were Because we're servicing a 12K.

Curt: That's a lot.

jamie peacock: And we we're roughing at like AK and there's face mills and all sorts of fun shit.

Curt: Yeah, yeah

jamie peacock: so we were between carryouts and evaporation it was fucking wild

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: but i mean we also had the machine running for 20 out of 24 hours

Curt: That's good. Crazy.

jamie peacock: So. That's fun.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: i can i can I can accept those numbers.

Curt: Yeah, I know it's... I know you always feel like you got a good day when you like the coolant tank and I'm like, oh, it's warm now.

jamie peacock: but

Curt: I'm like.

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: That was a... Does a lot to heat up that much coolant.

jamie peacock: Well... Wee running the good way by the time I left yesterday you open the door and it's fucking hot in there

Curt: Oh, yeah.

jamie peacock: Because it's been running steel non -stop, Black.

Curt: Yeah, totally. Yeah.

jamie peacock: it gets on we also got a carbide drill i think it's a kyocera drill

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Not in day compared to the other car band draw we had.

Curt: Oh nice. Nice.

jamie peacock: It's a couple thousand bots and it it doesn't give a fuck it's an expensive drill but performance is acceptable for the price.

Curt: good That's good.

jamie peacock: Because I'm busy also trying to get everything lined up so when I'm away, call can run without any issues.

Curt: Yeah, make your vacation.

jamie peacock: So like spare taps, spare drills.

Curt: Yeah less stress.

jamie peacock: all the space that he's going to need so he can just keep the machines pumping Because, yeah. I want to make lots of money while I'm not there.

Curt: good Yeah, that helps.

jamie peacock: like that's That's the dream. talk Anyway. Um... What is in your Google box, Kurt?

Curt: Sweet. Uh... My Google box is fun stuff. uh so uh cyber yeah cyberpunk uh drone sim mod there's a mod for cyberpunk That is.

jamie peacock: I see those.

jamie peacock: Oh, nice.

Curt: Like. it yeah it's an actual drone so like they integrated with beta flight and everything so uh yeah if you're into that actually no i'll link in the show notes no one's going to be interested in it but i'll link it anyways if you want to do that there's also ah If you've ever modded.

Curt: games i've never modded games and i just looked into this and like there is insane mods you can put on cyberpunk because that's already like a pretty

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: It's pretty. Like. there's a lot of adult content in that game but you can make it a lot more adult content yeah if you want to so i was like oh boy there's lots of fun mods for this one so

jamie peacock: Yeah. Even worse, NOS.

Curt: Messed around with that. Uh... um Jacob, Jacob, Jacob sent me hip to something called List Monk because I was bitching about... ah auto emailing services and we were talking about i don't know my mouse one has disappeared Um,

Curt: We were talking about... ah different services we've used in the past. Um, and he's he's like why don't you just self -host your own because he's a code nerd and he always thinks about that stuff like self -host yourself and duba i'm like dude I don't want anyways, he sent me hip to list monk, which is actually pretty sick.

jamie peacock: no comment

Curt: So I'm going to look and do it a little bit more.

jamie peacock: Okay.

Curt: um Yeah, it's less scary than I thought uh 60 versus 100 watt fiber laser stuff because of that and then uh after ship because of.

jamie peacock: Yep.

Curt: of that. what we've talked about. so Uh, How about you?

jamie peacock: Nos.

Curt: How about you, Master Jim? What's in your Google box?

jamie peacock: Um... Yeah. Black Fox machining because he makes awesome little knives and The acid green one is mine.

Curt: oh Yeah.

jamie peacock: um

Curt: So pretty. So pretty.

jamie peacock: Tin. 10 foot containers because i want to contain it for my tumbling and grinding And looking for collet nuts because we are making some ER32. fixturing dinguses i'm actually waiting for the guys from sanderson to come back to me with the sample that i had he treated and a spec on material for pre -hod.

jamie peacock: so we're going to machine them out of Slutty hoarder. material so that they're a little bit more wear resistance but they all, it's a. Stubby little EL32.

jamie peacock: Hmm. with nine holes in the bottom. so eight for fixturing and one for a stopper so you can bolt it to any of the barnacle

Curt: Oh, okay.

jamie peacock: products. um or you can bolt to your own fixture like if you need a hold round stock for an op1

Curt: Gotcha. Smart.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so waiting to find out about that pre -odd and then ah we'll be making those. the ever -growing product line

Curt: cool No doubt, I know.

jamie peacock: Yeah. Um, You know, what, uh...

Curt: Sweet.

jamie peacock: yeah where can people find you and your things good

Curt: ah Find me and my things, confoundedmachine .com. ah I think I'm going to do. a presale we talked about it there's actually information on my site under updates now um and

jamie peacock: loss.

Curt: emails if you're part of that and then links to all this stuff if you want to buy our shirts or Whatever. How about you, Mr. Yeah. I love that shirt.

jamie peacock: Yana.

Curt: um I'll be your master, Jamie. Where can people find your stuff?

jamie peacock: ah nauticalwh .com for any of the workholding shenanigans. JSpec ENG, which has a link to that. and for the shirts the shirts all on the jspec ing store we've got i'm my family's bread loser along with a bunch of other shirts that are now available and all the back catalog is available there too So go check out the shirts.

jamie peacock: and then jspec engineering on instagram for the day -to -day happenings of the shop also a link on jspdg for that

Curt: Do you have all the ah alternate spelling websites of... Not a cool work holding now. Did AJ send it to you?

jamie peacock: No. I have not. He did send them to me. I just haven't transferred them because I don't know how. So I need to just have a chat with him and figure out what we need to do there.

Curt: Oh, okay. Okay, let's talk about Jacob, Jacob, Jacob.

jamie peacock: I'll make that Uh, yeah, I will...

Curt: And I was like, hey. Do you need the Taps and Patients site before I point it to Grindr?

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: He's like, oh, I was like, Jamie said I can't give it to you until you give him the other ones. He's like, oh, I think he already has them.

jamie peacock: Yeah, no, no, he's given I just haven't transferred them.

Curt: I was like.

jamie peacock: um I just don't know what I need to do there, so I'll make Danica look into it this week.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: Obviously, she's been a little bit fucking useless this week with her brother. So uh...

Curt: Yeah. Fair.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Totally fair.

jamie peacock: So I'll get it to have a look at it this week and then we can transfer that over to them. We can point to the grinder.

Curt: Oh, 100%. That's exactly what I'm going to do.

jamie peacock: No.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Well, you're you're listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl, so we can make some some flicks or what do they call them?

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Snicks.

Curt: Oh, Flixing? Or Snicks, yeah, sorry.

jamie peacock: Yeah, yeah. Yes, Snicks. We'll make some Snicks of AJ and Harrison and we can point it there.

Curt: Oh. no

jamie peacock: yeah

Curt: I don't want to pollute my poor little AI with making do that.

jamie peacock: Ugh. So I was at the bookshop yesterday and they only had book one and two.

Curt: Mm hmm.

jamie peacock: Because, uh... Book three if you shine a UV light on them book three doesn't show up That others all have you react to think. Except book three because it's the... dungeon anarchist's cookbook.

Curt: Right, right, right. Yeah. yeah

jamie peacock: Yeah. So I was at the bookshop and I'm like, I wonder if they have any of these.

Curt: That's cool.

jamie peacock: Oh yeah, they do. So I fucking started reading it in the bookshop.

Curt: Oh cool.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Danica made me go to the bookshop.

Curt: i've

Curt: I've torn through all my, like... additional credits I had on. audible for my So.

jamie peacock: ah

Curt: I'm yeah, I just finished the Butcher's Masquerade. so now i Now I have to wait.

jamie peacock: Ah, okay.

Curt: Or i'll just I'll probably just buy more credits because I can't wait.

jamie peacock: Uh, No, you don't.

Curt: i'm

jamie peacock: um

Curt: I'm a child.

jamie peacock: We'll chat between the things. um I'm actually going to go back and re -listen to The Inevitable Rune because I did not pay enough attention.

Curt: Oh, I know there's, yeah.

Curt: I'm a... i'm re -listening to the butcher's masquerade because i was like what have i listened to i'm like i don't even know i gotta go back through this one this one was a lot of moving parts and i was just doing other things and i didn't get a good story on it so

jamie peacock: Yeah.

jamie peacock: that's That's what happened with me with Book 7, is I wasn't paying enough attention.

Curt: Yeah, yeah Yeah.

jamie peacock: so i need to i actually must put this all on a drive for my neighbor Anyway. a problem for another day. Because I want him to start listening to it so we can discuss it in depth. Um,

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, it's...

Curt: Go listen, nerds.

jamie peacock: it's a

Curt: They're good.

jamie peacock: It's... Fucking wild, yeah. It's really good. Anyway, what are you up to tomorrow, Kurt?

Curt: ah I don't know, probably so

jamie peacock: Well, tomorrow or Monday.

Curt: Probably loading parts from... For people on Marketplace, my wife is selling everything that isn't bolted down. Actually, that's lovely.

jamie peacock: Have fun.

Curt: Yeah, we're both doing it together, but I end up getting roped into... Bing. See you. being the

jamie peacock: Pack mule, yes.

Curt: slave labor so Yeah, I don't mind.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: that That's the easy part. um And then shipping a bunch of orders out of. Fuck, I gotta go. figuring out this tariff nonsense now because Now we're fighting again with the oh I don't know whatever

jamie peacock: ah yes

Curt: Whatever. um Yeah. So anyways. If you place an order with me, I will ah hopefully just be able to send it to you. And if not... I'll have to chat with you via email because... Silly. People are doing silly things. So. we'll leave We'll leave it at that. How about you? What are you doing?

jamie peacock: Um... allegedly not working? I think we...

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: I think I'm gonna convince Danica to walk the dogs late this afternoon, not during the middle of the fucking day heat. Um,

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: But yeah, I think I might to run some ammo today. I actually want to move my boat into the garage. That is what I want to do. because then I can work on my boat because I was thinking of maybe going fishing tomorrow morning, but I don't think I'm going to. um I need to get through month end first.

jamie peacock: and then I will deal with going fishing. Um. Because it's now starting to warm up again. We might actually catch a fish. uh so i want to put my boats in the garage so i can do a bit of work on it um And I need to put my IPC charge on the truck. so that I can take it to work on Monday.

jamie peacock: um But yeah, I think I'm just gonna potter around and just take it easy. It's been a busy week.

Curt: Probably the thing.

jamie peacock: um yeah yesterday i only got to work at like 10 a .m

Curt: Sounds it, yeah.

jamie peacock: But then I was there till five. So... and literally running flat out the entire time. We are out of drums for shavings. I've filled an entire drum in one day on the LK.

Curt: Cool. That's a lot. That's a lot.

jamie peacock: Yes. So I'm taking the IPC tote. um that we can dump shape our monuments there then pack it into into drums and then weigh the drums and pack it into a big bag and just drag the bag.

jamie peacock: out.

Curt: Okay.

jamie peacock: for when our so like our shaving guy will take it out of the totes or out of the drums He'll handle that for us. but we need a bulk way to store shavings because we're about to run 1800 aluminium parts on the Emco so that's going to make a fair amount of shavings

Curt: Right. Yeah. yeah

jamie peacock: No. Fuck. So.

Curt: Hmm.

jamie peacock: shaving management's becoming a problem i also need to both finish building my office at some point at the workshop

Curt: So just a few things you got on the list. Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yeah, I'm not going in today. Today I'm going to chill at the house and probably see family and crap.

Curt: It's a good thing to do, yeah.

jamie peacock: I just dumb shit Yeah. take a bit of a break watch some tv

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: I think we'll go for a...

Curt: yeah keep the brain healthy

jamie peacock: go for a 5k later go walk the doggos and i should actually go look actually no i need to either go buy insoles or new shoes today

Curt: Sweet.

jamie peacock: because we're going to be walking a shiploaded IMTS. And my boots.

Curt: Oh yeah.

jamie peacock: I've got slip -on boots. Which are fun. but my foot slides forward a little bit and it's caused the back of the insole the top layer

Curt: Ooh, yeah.

jamie peacock: to peel back and then um my heels against the foam and it's causing my heels to get sore so i think new boots might be the correct like lace -up boots might be the correct call

Curt: Yeah, and break them in now. Yeah Yeah.

jamie peacock: Yes.

Curt: yeah

jamie peacock: before before i do this Because yeah.

Curt: Yeah. yeah Totally.

jamie peacock: I made that mistake last time.

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: So did Danica. we walked The day before IMTS, we walked like... 10 kilometers around chicago and our feet were fucked.

Curt: Yep.

jamie peacock: Yeah, so

Curt: Yeah it'll do it.

jamie peacock: Don't be stupid, people. But you're my trip.

Curt: Yeah, especially on that. Concrete.

jamie peacock: My US trip is getting silly now. So Kenya Airlines moved our flight.

Curt: Oh, just...

jamie peacock: So our first leg they moved. six hours earlier or four hours earlier. So Danica's phoning them tomorrow. I'm like, hey, cunts, we're on a business trip, traveling with an old person. You've moved our flat, put us in the fucking business lounge in Nairobi.

jamie peacock: Fuck. This is not acceptable. So we're going to see if we can get business lounge access for free because they moved our flats. Um...

Curt: I'd be sick, yeah.

jamie peacock: I'm also like, I kind of prefer this. It means there's less chance we're going to miss our connecting flight to Nairobi. Because if anything, if we delayed here, the two -hour layover, that's cutting it a bit far. So we go from here. We've got a few hours in Nairobi.

jamie peacock: Land in the U .S. Drive eight hours. Nine hours after we land, we have a meetup. in cleveland um then the following day we're going to go to AJ via.

jamie peacock: Ben, more than likely, unless we can get the scientist thing lined up. If we can get that lined up, then sorry, Ben. We're going to Saunders. And then, JJ... And then from AJ, we're going up to Easton and Madison and going to go. to a warrior And then Saturday afternoon, we'll be in Chicago for the week.

Curt: Damn. It's a lot of.

jamie peacock: It's gonna be a fucking busy like four days

Curt: It's a lot of bounce around.

Curt: Yeah, no doubt Huh?

jamie peacock: yeah land and drive eight hours straight.

Curt: Ugh.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: No.

jamie peacock: it's gonna be I don't know. I still need to organize a rental car. I need to organize something decent. I was thinking of getting a U -Haul truck and throwing the mother -in -law in the back.

Curt: Aw dude. The bad idea.

jamie peacock: If Danica complains, throw her in the back as well.

Curt: I mean, it'll it'll it'll sound and ride the same whether they're in the back or the front, so it doesn't matter.

jamie peacock: Yeah.

Curt: but

jamie peacock: Yeah. I was thinking of looking at like a Corolla or a Jetta or something. Something decent. Something pleasant to drive.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: Look.

Curt: Yeah, totally.

jamie peacock: on F -150.

Curt: Yeah.

jamie peacock: and just be poor from diesel

Curt: Yeah. Yeah.

jamie peacock: because yeah that's gonna not be cheap but anyway thank you everybody for listening if you enjoyed the podcast please consider sharing liking all those fun things Um...

Curt: Yeah, exactly.

jamie peacock: Ugh, is he dying? um Yeah. Still dying. Anyway, thank you very much and yeah we'll see you guys ah next week.

Curt: Take care all.
