There's a right way and a wrong way to compare your art.
Reevaluating Art Comparison Methods
00:00:04
Speaker
You see, a little while ago, I made a video talking about one of the worst things that you can do for your pottery for your art is to compare yourself with other potters, other other people. And after posting that video, I got a comment on that video saying where she the The comment said where I I compare my art all the time and it actually helps me to grow my art.
Unproductive vs. Productive Comparisons
00:00:27
Speaker
And after she said that, I thought that's very, very interesting and that there's actually a right way and a wrong way to compare your art.
00:00:35
Speaker
So the wrong way is it pretty sim it's simple. It's where you are comparing art and you're wishing that you had that success that they had. right the You wish that your pottery could look like that and you wish that you your literally your your work can look like that. That's the wrong way to do it.
00:00:56
Speaker
But the right way to do it is where you're comparing your art for learning. You're modeling what they're doing to learn, to grow, to try to figure out a technique, right? Maybe they're doing a certain like swirly technique, whatever, and you don't know how they're doing it. So you keep comparing your what you're doing to what they're doing and seeing if it's close, if it's close or not.
00:01:21
Speaker
because it's intentional, it's an intentional comparing compared to but the wrong way where you are just wishing that you had more success or wishing that you were at that level of or or being a full time potter. Right. That's the wrong way. And
Harnessing Comparison for Growth
00:01:37
Speaker
don't get me wrong, raw we're always comparing things all the time, right? We're comparing an apple that we see at a store to another apple if it's good or bad, or maybe we're comparing the weight to things. We're always comparing things. We're never going to not be comparing things.
00:01:51
Speaker
But if you do it wrong, then you're going to get down in the dumps. Then you're going to get imposter syndrome and you're not going to be able to break free and start making a party that you actually want to make. So you have to compare the right way. Use comparison as a tool to help you make better pottery, make better art.
00:02:09
Speaker
Right. If you see something that is interesting to you and you think that looks cool and you maybe want to start doing something like that, use comparison to help you get that idea out. Use comparison to help you model the success so that you can start doing it yourself.
00:02:28
Speaker
You know, don't compare yourself to the success they're having, but compare the work or compare the technique so that you can apply it to your own pottery. You know, I get the advice all the time that it's OK to to model and to to copy other potters. Just don't stay there, right? Don't copy it look step by step. Everything they're doing because and then that's not actually yours.
Adapting Techniques for Personal Style
00:02:52
Speaker
Try to when you're comparing these things, try to fix a couple of different things, change a couple of different things here and there to make it truly your own. Right. Maybe if they're making flower pottery and you're comparing other people's flower potter to your own, try to see what are the differences that you can make so that you can actually make something that is your own. Right. So instead of maybe they do sunflowers.
00:03:15
Speaker
Then maybe you do roses or maybe if they do daffodils, then you do dandelions, right? You do something different but you can still do the same technique and and that makes it your own they're not Just because you're comparing with other potters other artists out there doesn't mean it's wrong you could use comparison to help you your art to Get better But don't be trying to compare your so your success with somebody else's success because it is not going to happen.
Recognizing Skill Levels
00:03:48
Speaker
You might have a different skill level compared to them. They may have been doing this for years, a lot of lot longer. So don't compare that to other
