Introduction and Reflection on Fulham's Success

00:00:05
Speaker
sports podcast network work Hello and welcome to the Daily Fulham Podcast. Thank you very much for being here. My name is Gavin Ruffell and today I am looking back on the weekend's game as Fulham went to St James Park and came away with the three points to inflict the double over the Jordies for the first time in the Premier League since the 2008-2009 season.
00:00:28
Speaker
We're at the start of Feb and let's hope this month has started as it means to go on. It's a more successful, more fruitful month as far as Fulham are concerned and they can get back to the sort of form they were showing in December.

Fulham vs Newcastle: Lineup and Early Game Highlights

00:00:42
Speaker
So let me just give you the context going into this game. Fulham starting in 10th, hoping to bounce back after that disappointment, that disappointing performance against Manchester United where they succumbed to a 1-0 defeat.
00:00:55
Speaker
Newcastle on the other hand coming into this one have been in prime form winning seven of the last eight games over the course of that period they have been the form team in the Premier League but they did lose their last encounter at St James Park but there's no doubt that coming into this one they would have been strong favourites as they looked to gatecrash the top four For Fulham, we knew they were going to be forced into one change with Harry Wilson, expected to spend a long time on the sidelines now. Marco Silva was quick to dismiss reports that it might be until the end of the season. He's hopeful to have him back at some stage, but what we do know is that he's going to be out for the foreseeable future. And it was a chance for Adama Troyeroy to come in and stake a claim of his own. Good to see that Adama Troyeroy started this game on the right-hand side. It's where he should be playing. It's where he operates best.
00:01:44
Speaker
ah For Newcastle, it was very much what you would expect, the same team pretty much that has been enjoying the success they have had in the last month or two. And they started the game the better of the two sides. Really early chance for them, which initially comes from the right where Jacob Murphy crosses into the informant, Alexander Esak, who miskicks it, but eventually comes out to Anthony Gordon on the left side. He twists and turns to Timothy Costana, manages to get his cross in from the other side.
00:02:14
Speaker
which Bruno heads over he should have hit the target but it was a frantic start for Newcastle as you would expect given the form that they are in but after the first initial foray for Newcastle Fulham were able to take the sting out of the game some controlled possession keeping the ball pretty well I did mention in the preview how it was going to be a physical battle at times with the nature of some of Newcastle's midfielders and That was no different here. Jolinton was making his presence known right from the start. Several fouls and as is the Jolinton way, there's several fouls and there's no booking at all. Very frustrated Marco Silva making his feelings known about that but he was up to his usual tricks Jolinton and the referee for some reason was unwilling to give him a booking.

Newcastle's Aggression and Fulham's Defensive Struggles

00:02:56
Speaker
despite that Fulham had two bookings of their own in the first 20 minutes Anthony Robinson and Yuckim Anderson so getting two of your back for caution in the first 20 minutes in St James's Park isn't recommended and I mentioned Anthony Gordon and obviously we're aware of the threats he has he has blistering pace and it was a real battle for Timothy Costanha and he was struggling to live with him at times first shot on target though he does come from a surprise source it comes from Fabian Shaw who plays the ball into Joel Inton who slips it to Guimarrez and then Shah follows his initial pass, he's in the box but Leno's able to close him down and smother his shot there. I felt like Jimenez when he was getting the ball at times was pretty slow, pretty laboured in his decision making, there was chances to get shots away but he was resisting that and ultimately led to nothing. Several crosses were coming into the box from from both sides but they were pretty aimless and it was food and drink when you got a big guy like Dan Byrne occupying the 18 yard box, the 6 yard box
00:03:55
Speaker
anyway would cross his ear just be happy to head out kick out all day but all the good stuff all the threatening bits of play was coming from was coming from out wide from both sides it was pretty congested in that middle of the park we got to the 35th minute and then it all of a sudden sprung into life we were very close to one of the goals of the season from Sandro Tenali. It's a cross from Isak which gets headed out a couple of times and the ball comes to Tenali who's about, he's fully third the yards out and he unleashes a wicked shot on his right that goes from left to right and smacks the crossbar. A tremendous effort for Tenali there really sparked the Sir James' faithful into life and they got their goal not long after that and it's Anthony Gordon again who's involved whose pace was causing serious problems for Timothy Castania
00:04:43
Speaker
he leaves for dead, he drives out Jochen Anderson, shifts it to his left side, and obviously at this point Anderson has been booked so he can't commit a challenge otherwise he's at risk of getting the scent off, but he finds space to deliver a cross on the left, he drives it in low, Bassey manages to get a foot to it but it falls perfectly to Jacob Murphy who can't miss from close range. 1-0 down,
00:05:06
Speaker
It's about showing resilience and and a bit of fight and a bit of ticker to not go under at that point. And whilst they were struggling to fashion opportunities, they needed to make sure they got into the break. No worse than a goal down. There was a chance for 2-0. Liv Remento would broke 3, plays a 1-2 with Isak. He's slightly at a wide angle, tries to go across Leno and find the bottom corner.
00:05:26
Speaker
but the German is able to save with his feet, so that was a crucial moment just to keep the score down. Finally, just before the break, Joel Linton did receive his yellow card after his 36th foul of the game, much to the yeah relief probably of Marco Silva who who felt that he should have been in the book several minutes before that but overall my feelings on that first half were that Fulham looked decent in possession the midfield were doing well but they were unable to fashion any clear-cut opportunities the crossing needed to be better otherwise Shar and Byrne they're very experienced defenders they'll do that all day won't they head it and kick it away
00:06:06
Speaker
That rounds off the action for the first half. I'll come on to the second half action shortly, but before I do that, let me tell you a bit about our sponsors. Here at the Global Sports Podcast Network, we spent a lot of time selecting our delivery platform, Zencast that came out the clear winner. Fulham's Second Half Comeback and Equalizer

00:06:41
Speaker
So yeah, as I said, I don't think Fulham were bad in the first half. Their decision making at crucial times was just a bit lacking. And of course, they had to be aware of the threats that Newcastle possessed. Anthony Gordon, especially, who was terrifying Timothy Kostanya. And we know the former Alexander Recak has been in recently, so they would have to be very mindful, very watchful of him. Fulham didn't register a single shot on target in the first half when it took them about 30 seconds to register their first shot on target in the second half.
00:07:10
Speaker
It's a bit of a tame effort to be quite honest. Emile Smith row, he's outside the box. He tries to curl one in from about 22 yards but is straight at Dubravka. But it's only a couple of minutes after that that he has another shot on target. He drives through the middle. Newcastle defenders back off. This time he gets a shot away with his left foot. He keeps it down but Dubravka is able to make a smart save low down to his left. But the openings were coming now.
00:07:37
Speaker
and Newcastle started the second half a bit sloppy, there was some miscommunication at the back. There was a big opening for Jimenez as well, talked about in the first half, how at times he was reluctant to shoot, was just a bit slow in his decision making, it was a big chance. It comes from an Anderson diagonal, there's a bit of a mix-up between Bern and Shah, and Jimenez is able to control the ball, bring it down. In the box, he seems to take an eternity to get his shot away, eventually does.
00:08:02
Speaker
it takes a deflection off Dan Byrne and goes wide so a big escape big let off there for Newcastle but they were looking all at sea and whatever Marco Silva had said at half time it seemed to have the desired effect because it was now wave after wave of pressure and Jimenez again was involved a couple of chances from Kors not quite able to make the most of it from Headers but he did manage to get that equalizer and this was good play from Fulham but it comes about from a mistake from Newcastle and it's Tenali who gives the ball away and Jimenez is able to nip in, runs forward down the left side, finds a dhamma troary to his right. Now at this stage you're expecting a dhamma troary just to travel with the ball.
00:08:40
Speaker
commit defenders and running into the box but instead he lofts a ball forward to Robinson on the left who guides it first time. Volley passed into the path of Jimenez who gets a shot off straight away and it ends up in the back of the net. The replay show this takes a significant deflection off Murphy um which ultimately leaves Dubravka with no chance, no time to react.
00:09:02
Speaker
It was coming, the goal was coming but you know in these games when you are on top you have to score and thankfully Fulham were able to do that. At 1-1 you're wondering if this is going to spring Newcastle back into life.
00:09:13
Speaker
in order to do that they made some substitutions we saw jolinton taking off probably a bit of a precaution there so he wouldn't he wouldn't draw further off from the referee and get sent off but he'd also taken a knock a few minutes before then so we saw willoch and trippier come on livermento one of the other players coming off but now all of a sudden the momentum is with Fulham and they're pushing to get ahead however new castle they do have a massive opportunity as another big let off for Fulham he's at again just that wide he's on the right he gets a low crossing and then Joe Willock who's just come on
00:09:48
Speaker
I'm not sure how many touches he had add until this stage but he's free, he's vacant in the box and he seems to have the simplest of tasks just to meet the cross, get some contact on it and tap it in for 2-1 but I don't know what happens, it's almost as if he dummies it or just takes his eye off the ball and he like wouldn't even call it an airshot, it's just the ball goes between his legs before he has time to get his shot away and yeah, it's ah it's a huge pivotal moment in the game and a big opportunity that Newcastle had squandered. The game was getting stretched at this point. I certainly felt like there was another goal. Which way it was going to go, that was anyone's guess. Fulham were looking really good in transition ah but just needed to be a little bit better with the decision making with the final ball. Some substitutions, we saw Emile Smith-Rowe come off and Jimenez and they were replaced by Pereira and Rodrigo Muniz.
00:10:39
Speaker
Woodwork was hit for the second time by Newcastle in the game. It's by Alexander Esak. This time he's played in by Willock. He's on the left side of the box. Tries to curl one in the top corner, but he's agonisingly denied. So Fulham getting a little bit of luck there. Penalty claim shortly after that for a handball on Kostanya, but he comes off his chest and the game was on the knife edge. Newcastle now had a foothold in the game, but Fulham were looking lively as well.
00:11:05
Speaker
some substitutions for Fulham, we saw Cessignon come on for a will-be, Cessignon of course scored twice the last time, Fulham won at St James's Park. The atmosphere in the ground, well Newcastle fans, they were starting to get a little bit frustrated, ah feeling like one or two decisions weren't going their way at the same time, they they were being sloppy at times, being a bit careless on the ball. And now we come on to the decisive third goal,
00:11:31
Speaker
Which comes about, it's a free kick to Fulham. There's some prop stations from Newcastle players, Newcastle fans. They weren't keen on the decision in the first place. So it's a free kick on the wide left.
00:11:42

after the foul by Jacob

Fulham Takes the Lead and Analyzes Striking Options

00:11:44

Murphy. And Pereira just fizzes the ball into an area at pace and Rodrigo Muniz is able to nip in at the front post before Dubravka just to get the faintest of touches on it and guide the ball into the net. It's not the biggest of touches from Muniz but it's all he needs. Without that touch Dubravka probably punches it, probably palms it away but him getting that touch first is just enough for them to score that goal.
00:12:08
Speaker
and once again Fulham substitutes coming on and having an impact on the game both of the substitutes combining here and this was the 11th time a Fulham sub has scored this season which is the joint most in the league along with Bournemouth now with 10 minutes to go or so bit more than that with injury time it's just about game management how Fulham can control the ball for the last 10 minutes and snuff out any dangerous attacks from Newcastle it is the yacht was brought on in order to protect the league leads he came on for a dhammatrora he certainly made an impact on proceedings he was heavily involved in this game and ultimately fullham held on for the three points they were able to manage the game well i can't recall a clear cut new castle chance after fullham's second goal so yeah the double done over new castle this season
00:12:58
Speaker
It's another game where Fulham have gone away from home against one of the teams at the top of the league, Vol 4 Champions League, and they've they've been successful. and And you just get frustrated, don't you, with some of the inconsistencies, the flat performances at home we've seen, the result against some of the teams in the bottom half, but then on their day they've shown they can go away to tough places like St James' Park, like Anfield, like Stamford Bridge.
00:13:20
Speaker
and they can very much hold their own and it was a testament to the character as well that they were able to come from behind and win this game. They've done that, that's three times they've done that this season now and they've done it twice at ground. They don't historically, well at least recently, have a our great success at at Stanford Bridge and St James's Park. So after the disappointment of Manchester United, it's really important to bounce back here and not just feel sorry for yourselves and let the season meander now and um Yeah, that was a ah great win and I think based on the second half performance, it was it was thoroughly deserved. Newcastle didn't really have an answer to them in the second half. Newcastle were the better team in the first half, there's no doubt about that and I think it was important for Fulham to make sure they they went in just the solitary goal behind to give themselves a realistic chance of getting back into the game and yeah, based on the the pressure in the second half, I think they were worthy of their three points.

So full on back up to 9th now after Brighton's torment against Nottingham Forest. Just a point off Aston Villa as well. I still believe in what I said after the United game that European aspirations have probably gone now.
00:14:56
Speaker
It's not insurmountable, the difference they have, they're only 4 points, 5 points off some of the teams ahead of them. It's just the inconsistencies and what they've been unable to do this season is string wins together. When they have had a good result, it's kind of followed an indifferent result or they've just lacked that bit of momentum which has ultimately not quite propelled them up the table to where maybe Marco Silva feels they should they should be. but onto 36 points now and I've said it a few times about breaking the record points tally now and that there's every chance that they can do that and they've just created a bit of distance for the teams below them so a top half finish would mean success as well and you know it's funny isn't it it's the final day of the transfer window if Fulham had lost again there you can imagine there'd be so much clammer now to bring in more players the desire to bring in more players would be greater with the results being a contributing factor but
00:15:48
Speaker
a good win at St James' Park and it changes the perspective so quickly, doesn't it, in football? I think we've got to pay respect to the midfield. I thought Sander Berger and Sassa Lukic held their own extremely well in in midfield. there Everyone talks about the Newcastle midfield and how how good it is and come combative midfield, very physical. if If you're not able to stand up to their physicality, then you're going to fall short. So they were able to do that and either Sassa Lukic managed to do it without even and getting a booking. So he's available to the next game. So that's a positive. and Timothée Castagna I think the word of praise needs to be given to him because at half time you're thinking is this Timothée Castagna's last game for Fulham for a while because he was being tormented by Anthony Gordon but in the second half it was a lot stronger display and Jockim Anderson as well as is a player we haven't seen the best of in recent times and as I said he got booked early on in the first 20 minutes so it's difficult from that point on
00:16:40
Speaker
was culpable as well for the Newcastle goal but again a lot better second half from him. Redemption for Raoul Jimenez isn't it? Getting his goal albeit a bit of luck but you need that slice of luck don't you at times? Fulham didn't have it last last week with Martinez's goal for Manchester United. This side they have a deflection that works out for them and for Raoul Jimenez it's ah a bit of a redemption arc against Newcastle isn't it because got sent off in the 3-0 last season and I'm sure he would have taken a lot of responsibility for that result but You know how things change and he scored in both fixtures against Newcastle and there's always constant chatter around Fulham strikers and whether that's something they need to look at but their two strikers got on the score sheet didn't they? Raul Jimenez, that's nine Premier League goals for him now. Rodrigo Moniz, he comes off the bench and he can make an impact in games.
00:17:28
Speaker
anthony robinson as well that's ah a milestone for him that's his tenth sister the season the first time a fallen player has done that since steve malbronn so every chance that he can utter that tally and he's only behind mama mohammad sala in that now so which shows the level he has taken his game to for newcastle and edie howe i guess they'll be wondering What went wrong because they did look quite comfortable in the first half and then in the second half it changed completely and they weren't able to match Fulham. It's a blow for them in their fight for the Champions League. Obviously they got a big game coming up in the League Cup. Every chance for them to get back to Wembley, secure a trophy for the first time in
00:18:08
Speaker
long time so it is a setback for them a game a lot of people would have expected them to win but they're still in the mix and I did fancy them for top four at the start of the season and I still think they'll beat their up thereabouts teams are gonna lose games unless you're Liverpool all teams are gonna lose games so it's it's that it's how you react it's how you bounce back from that and on the flip side for them I've done that well this season when they have suffered setbacks they have tended to bounce back react well to them and they were able to do that here so yeah the resilience shown to come back there you gotta hand it to the players you gotta hand it to Marco Silver
00:18:43
Speaker
It is the final day of the transfer window.

Transfer Window Speculations for Fulham

00:18:46
Speaker
No ins or outs yet for Fulham. It's been a very quiet month for most teams. We will see more action on the final day and Marco Silva in his pre-match pressure expressed the need for a replacement for Harry Wilson given his injury and the right back. There'll be loads of names linked during the course of today.
00:19:08
Speaker
some of them with more credibility than others we'll see names pop up at last minute and you know we know tony carne likes to do business later on doesn't he so i think fullum will get a couple in he'll probably get those targets what names i'm not sure i would be absolutely amazed if fullum don't don't do anything at all but i do think there'll be one or two outgones as well probably maybe one or two youngsters and some like carless finishers i can see leaving maybe maybe just on unknown but uh yeah there will be transfer activity throughout the day a little bit of a break from league action now as Fulham will turn their attentions to the FA Cup and to Wigan Athletic
00:19:46
Speaker
That'll round things off for today's match review Monday. Very successful weekend for Fulham. I will be back with a little preview to the Wigging game and I'll be recapping the final events of the transfer window. So do join me for that. See you next time.
