Preview of Fulham vs Manchester United FA Cup Clash

00:00:21
Speaker
My name is Gavin Ruffall, your host as always, and this is a preview to Fulham's fifth round FA Cup tie against Manchester United.
00:00:28
Speaker
So we enter March, the weather's starting to get a little bit warmer and there's two and a half months left of the season to go. And there's still so much to play for from Fulham perspective and that's so exciting, isn't it, when we come into this stage.
00:00:41
Speaker
Or sometimes in recent years they've been fighting a lost cause, been at the wrong end of the table in a relegation battle. Or maybe they've been out of the cup and there's not a lot left to play for, but they're going well in the league.
00:00:52
Speaker
and They do come up against Manchester United.
00:00:58
Speaker
getting back to an fa cup fine for the first time since nineteen seventy five so that would be nice one at fifty year anniversary since that fa cup final against westam they do come up against manches united you know We know about Manchester United and the problems they've had this season, but it's still a fixture that Fulham go into maybe as underdogs. Manchester United at Old Trafford, but then again their form at Old Trafford hasn't been great this season.
00:01:22
Speaker
Fulham away from home, their form away from home has seemed a lot better,

Historical Context of Fulham's Struggles Against Manchester United

00:01:26
Speaker
hasn't it? But if Fulham are to get a victory against United in the FA Cup, it'll be the first time they've done that since 1908. I mean, if you can remember that, then fair play to you for hanging in all of this time. Because, yeah, it's been a ah long time, but Fulham have made history this season.
00:01:42
Speaker
They've just come off the back Willen at Molyneux for the first time in 40 years. They won at Stamford Bridge for the first time in 40 plus years. So who knows? Could be a good omen. When the draw was initially made for this stage of competition, it was met with mixed emotions really because I felt like it was probably tie Fulham would want to avoid. There were other teams you probably would have fancied your chances more against.
00:02:03
Speaker
And that's not because this Manchester United side holds great fears for teams now. They're certainly not the team they were... At the start of the century, they're not the team they were in previous seasons and the previous managers, they're at the lowest point. The managers even admitted so.
00:02:17
Speaker
But it's just the fact that Fulham, when they come up against Manchester United, something seems to happen to them, whether it's mentally, but they just can't seem to give their best. And we've seen that this season. and The fact that Manchester United are one of only two teams that Fulham have failed to score against this season, Swampham, weirdly enough, being the other team, but two meetings this season, you have to go back six months now, don't you, to their first game in the Premier League season. and And that wasn't much of a great affair, to be quite honest with you. was almost an extension of pre-season, and both sides looked rusty in that game.
00:02:49
Speaker
United won it thanks to a late goal from Joshua Xerxes, and a lot of United fans would have been hoping that was a sign of things to come for him. but it certainly hasn't been the goals are dried up for him and fulham from that point on it's been an upward trajectory hasn't it and we know the journey they've gone on in the league this season and there's still a lot to play for on that front and the other game would have been extremely disappointed as well because that was a really boring game to put it simply it was a boring game back in i think it a month almost a month ago wasn't it may have even been more than a month ago
00:03:22
Speaker
The 1-0 defeat against Manchester United. Again, not many chances in that game. I think XG had that down as the lowest combined XG for any game since they've been the doing their statistics.
00:03:35
Speaker
Martinez scoreslesssandro martine scores. scores. Flukiest goal you'll ever likely to see. The big deflection of Sasselukic. So, Fulham clearly don't seem to have a lot of luck in this fixture. doesn't seem to matter where Manchester United are and what confidence they come into these games with that...
00:03:50
Speaker
They always seem to find a way of getting one over on Fulham. And that was no different two years ago. If we we go back, if we reminisce about two years ago, that was such a frustrating game, wasn't it, for Fulham? Because they played well in that game. They haven't played well in the games against you United this season.
00:04:06
Speaker
They haven't created many chances, to be quite honest. But in that game against United the Old Trafford, and it was a better United team, that was a United team that was higher up in the table. And things were going OK at that moment under Eric Ten Hag in his first season in charge.
00:04:20
Speaker
They went out to a 1-0 lead, thoroughly deserved. Mitrovic scoring from a corner. That's a rarity these days, isn't it? A Fulham goal from a corner. But back then, they used to manage a a few goals from corners. And they had chances to extend that lead.
00:04:34
Speaker
I think De Gea made a couple of good saves. There's one from Willian, another one from Mitrovic. But then it went horribly wrong in the most incredible fashion, didn't it? It was a 90-second spell, two-minute spell of absolute chaos.
00:04:48
Speaker
Willian sent off a handball on the line. Marco Silva's fuming on the sidelines. Look, we know Marco Silva, how he can be. He can get into a rage at the the drop of a hat, Carney, and that that was no different. He was shown his marching orders at the end.
00:05:02
Speaker
Alexander Mitrovic, the compound matters, he was also given his marching orders and subsequently given an eight-game ban for that, which looking back on it was completely over the top, wasn't it? Look, Mitrovic didn't handle himself in the best possible way there, but I think a stronger, more experienced referee in that situation would have just been able to calm things down, understand his frustrations and been able to kind of deal with the situation a lot better. But Mitrovic was sent off and from that point on Fulham imploded and there was only one winner Manchester United come away with a 3-1 win and that was in the quarterfinal stage so

Fulham's FA Cup Prospects Amidst Competition Changes

00:05:35
Speaker
more agonising I suppose at that stage because you're one game away from Wembley Fulham are two games away from Wembley but they're within sight and some of the big sides have been knocked out already and there's a lot of clubs having similar sort of seasons
00:05:51
Speaker
who will feel they have a realistic, genuine opportunity. You put Fulham in the same category as a Bournemouth, as a Brighton, Nottingham Forest. All sides that are up there got realistic chances of qualifying for Europe, but sides that have not been used to winning trophies.
00:06:08
Speaker
Some of them never, some of them it's been a very long time. So a lot of teams this season will think, yeah, why can't we go on a run and... I think it's evident in the team that Marco Silva selected against Wolves, resting a few players, a bit of rotation there, that the FA Cup is now a priority. And think did he make 10 changes in the last outing against Wigan?
00:06:28
Speaker
But I would expect to see something very similar to what we're used to seeing in the league week in, week out basis because he recognises that his Fulham side, this is an opportunity.
00:06:39
Speaker
They were in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup last season. So that was a massive game. Massive two legs for them against Liverpool. and you could say arguably this is their biggest game since. If they were to win this one and get through to the next round, then can almost taste it, can't you? And certainly Manchester United shouldn't hold any fear for them.
00:06:56
Speaker
This is a big opportunity for them to progress.

Technology in Football: Automated Offsides in the FA Cup

00:07:00
Speaker
One other feature of the weekend's FA Cup times, not just this one at Old Trafford, is that in seven of the eight games, with the exception being the Preston-Burnley tie between two All-Championship sides, so we'll see in seven of the eight games, we'll see automated offside.
00:07:15
Speaker
So Harry Maguire, you better stay onside this time because if you don't, it's going to get ruled out. and If they were in the competition last round, then Fulham could be playing Leicester, but it turns out they're playing Manchester United then.
00:07:27
Speaker
I think that's the confusion sometimes with the FA Cup, the changes they make and the getting rid of replays and stuff like that. Why has it suddenly been introduced in the fifth round? it It's just, it's a bit perplexing at times why these new things that get introduced, they don't get introduced from the start of the competition and they kind of make it up as they go along. But all in all, I am in favour automated offsides and I think it just speeds up decision-making, doesn't it? and Sometimes

Podcast Production Insights with Zencastr

00:07:51
Speaker
when you get the lines out, when you're watching at home or...
00:07:54
Speaker
It's probably more agonising, well, it's certainly more agonising when you're in the stadium because you're just sat there twiddling your thumbs, not knowing what's going on as they get the lines out. And even then, when you're watching at home, it's still hard to kind of distinguish whether someone's on side or offside. For instance, I mean, the other day when Fulham scored that first goal and saw Sessinghion, thought for a minute, are they're going to give offside you. They gave the goal in the end, but automated offsides, it just ah eliminates any doubt, doesn't it? And the it just speeds up the process. So...
00:08:21
Speaker
That is something that I am a fan of. And yeah, I think I just want to see that from the beginning of the competition. I understand. In the preliminary rounds and in round one, they might not have the technology available to certain lower league clubs and non-league clubs. But it just seems strange how now all of a sudden it's it's introduced when it wasn't there in the last round.
00:08:41
Speaker
But we can discuss that until the cows come out. We can discuss VAR and referees and stuff like that. But I won't. And in the next part, what I will discuss is Manchester United and how they are looking coming into this game.
00:08:55

Well, it's difficult to say, isn't Obviously, they're not where they want to be in the league, are they? To see Manchester United in such a low position.
00:09:35
Speaker
But they come into this game in form, could you say? They've not lost either of the last two games. By their standards this season, that is coming into into a game in form. And what I would say about the last two games, they have shown great character, I would say, which is something that's been questioned of this United side.
00:09:52
Speaker
not just Amrim's side, but Ten Hag's side before, that when things would go against them, that maybe the towel would come players would give up and just be resigned to what's going on not have that bit of fight, but it guts about them. So I think in the last two games, they have shown a bit of spirit to come from two goals down at Goodison to salvage a point there. And even in a game against Ipswich, Ipswich have have gone in front,
00:10:15
Speaker
And they've come back to win. And that's despite going down to 10 men with Dogu getting sent off. So what you would say about them is despite their fallibilities, despite their vulnerabilities and their overall poor form in the league, what they have shown is in knockout games in one

Manchester United's Form and Management Challenges

00:10:33
Speaker
off.
00:10:33
Speaker
sort of affairs where they are underdogs not that they necessarily are underdogs in this game but in those one-off games that they have something about them that they can compete and they can win them they were very impressive again backs to the wall early on in the season in the third round against Arsenal down to 10 men for a large amount of time in that game but they managed to come through on penalties and they've shown in certain games where there's not been much expectation then then they have got positive results but disappointment for them is they haven't been able to deliver consistency Talk about consistency a lot.
00:11:04
Speaker
Because it's a word that gets banded around a lot. It's a massive game. It's a massive game. And look. They have good pedigree in this competition in recent times. Getting to the final in successive seasons. Winning it last year against the odds. And this is what we go back to again.
00:11:19
Speaker
They would have been heavy underdogs for that tie against Manchester City. But they found a way to pull it out of the bag. So... I think for Fulham, got to expect a decent version of Manchester United in the FA Cup because there is something to play for. There is some silverware on the line. There is that prospect of Wembley. Of course, Manchester United, they're not strangers to Wembley, but it's still big for these players, despite some of these players having won Champions Leagues. and you know domestic trophies, an FA Cup is still a big trophy to win given their position in league. and We know they're in the Europa League as well. They've got a big tie coming up against Real Sociedad and I think they are one of the favourites to win that. i mean You wouldn't back them with any great certainty and any great degree of confidence, but you certainly wouldn't write them off and they can backdoor their way into the Champions League. as As bad as the season is, they could still end it potentially with two trophies and
00:12:08
Speaker
you know You look at some of the other teams up there in the league, a team like Arsenal, and they could finish runners-up three seasons running and not come away with a trophy in that period of time. Meanwhile, Manchester United are having some massive problems and are long way short, but they still find a way to deliver trophies. Eriksen Haag there was never a moment in time when he wasn't under pressure as Manchester United manager and that comes with the territory because of the expectations because it is such a massive football club because we know what's gone on before how successful they were under Sir Alex Ferguson and it just shows how good a manager Sir Alex was because they've never quite been able to replicate that despite the managers they've had managers with big reputations as well so Arsenal could look on enviously at Manchester United if they come away this season adding to their trophy cabinet and
00:12:55
Speaker
Look, Ruben Amram, he's found it tough, hasn't he? He's said some interesting things at times. He's been open. He's been honest. He's been honest about certain players, about Marcus Rashford, not pulling his weight in training. He gets shipped out to Aston Villa. He was outspoken in one of their defeats. that This was one of the worst Manchester United teams in history and caused a lot of uproar in some quarters, didn't it? And you can understand why, can't you? I mean, players, what are they going to think if they hear the manager saying things like that?
00:13:21
Speaker
I think there was another occasion after the defeat, it might have been half-time in a game where he was throwing stuff around, furniture got broken, TV got broken. So... It shows he's passionate. It shows he sets himself high expectations and he doesn't want to see that club where it is. and He's striving for better.
00:13:37
Speaker
He had a great time of things at Sporting Lisbon. and He's come to Manchester United. When Manchester United come call, and it's it's tough to turn down, isn't it? and Clearly, it's a lot tougher than he first anticipated, but they have to give him time. and I'm sure they will.
00:13:50
Speaker
Whatever happens to the rest of the season, the league is a bit of a write-off. And then they've just got to rebuild, haven't they? It's not like they haven't spent money in recent seasons, but this is what I come back to all the time is they spend a lot of money and then players just seem a shadow of their former selves.
00:14:05
Speaker
They go out somewhere else and then it frees them up. We even see an Anthony going to La Liga and scoring goals. and Talking about Anthony, you're talking about one of the pound-for-pound worst signings in Premier League history, given given how much he costs. So Manchester United fans must be scratching their heads when they see these players go elsewhere and then all of a sudden they're performing they're thinking, well, why didn't you do that for us? But maybe that's just the nature of the environment, going to Old Trafford.

Fulham's Tactical Strategies and Lineup Speculations

00:14:31
Speaker
players they just feel inhibited like they've got the weight of the world on their shoulders but they are a massive club they're one of the biggest football clubs in the world and it's unacceptable for them to be where they are but in time don't know how long it'll take two years three years four years five years they will be back It's nice to see them suffer for a little bit because then they get to experience what it's like for the rest of us normal folk who support other clubs that aren't used to enjoying success and complete dominance and winning trophies or or at least competing every season. So, yeah, they've had a tough time with the season, but there is still light at the end of the tunnel. That light is ah the potential of winning two trophies and getting back in the Champions League.
00:15:13
Speaker
Is that realistic? Yes. You wouldn't say so, but at the same time, as I said, with the way they've been in one-off games, you wouldn't completely rule it out, would you? In the final part of this episode, I will look further ahead to this game, give some predictions as to what might unfold on the day.

Don't settle for off-the-shelf solutions made for just anybody. Get what's right for you, right now. but We saw a lot of rotation, didn't we, in the week? And it was refreshing in some ways for Marco Silva because you he always prioritises the league. If it's Carabao Cup, if it's f FA Cup, that plays second fiddle and he'll make a lot changes. He made of changes for the last round against Wigan. I felt at the time that was a bit excessive given Fulham's position in the league, but they just about came through. it was a bit of a struggle at times, but they got through that game.
00:16:30
Speaker
Now against Premier League opposition, away from home, I doubt he's going to play the same team that played against Wigan. And, you know, he rested key players in the in the week. Regular starters, guys that would normally be on the team sheet, just taking them out of the firing line, giving them a little bit of a breather. OK, the performance against Crystal Palace was disappointing.
00:16:50
Speaker
And maybe due to the quick turnaround, that's why he opted for some fresh legs. But think if there wasn't an FA Cup game, This weekend, if they had already got knocked out of the competition, I think you would have seen a different line-up against Wolves. You would have seen something more similar to the Crystal Palace game.
00:17:06
Speaker
You would have seen Anthony Robinson play. You would have seen Calvin Bassie play. You would have seen Alex Iwobi play. But those guys were given a rest. Fulham got the best of both worlds, didn't they, in midweek? Because they were able to rest guys, give key players little breather, although they did come on in the end.
00:17:22
Speaker
um So he was able to give players a breather but come away with the result at the same time. So I would imagine you would see all of those players come back into the team. I guess the interesting one is what formation are they looking at? Because he went with five at the back against Wolves in the last outing. It's not something we've seen too often. We saw it for a little while back in December.
00:17:42
Speaker
ah The jury was out on it there. Did they play that way against Wolves because Wolves played five at the back? Or did they play that way because... They wanted to rest Robinson and felt that Sessegnon couldn't play at left-back. The only way he could play him was to play him at left-wing-back, so he had to go to five at the back.
00:17:57
Speaker
I mean, only he will be able to answer that question. And Sessegnon had a fine game, didn't he? and And he's done well in the appearances he's made in the Cup against Wigan and against Preston, for instance, earlier in the season in the Carabao Cup. So if he is left out, he's got every right to feel disappointed given that given the way he played in midweek. But you've got to be ruthless. There's no room for sentimentality.
00:18:18
Speaker
There is an opportunity here for Fulham to potentially lift silverware. So I think at this stage, you've got to play your strongest side. That starts from the goalkeeper. We've seen Stephen Bender play in the last two rounds. a couple of shaky moments against Wigan. So I think Bernd Leno has to come back in for this game.
00:18:34
Speaker
And then for me, it's four at the back. I mean, you could argue that he plays five at the back to match up Manchester United. That's what they like to do.

Offensive and Defensive Considerations for Fulham

00:18:41
Speaker
But for me, Fulham's suit playing four at the back.
00:18:44
Speaker
And then the decision is, I suppose, is it Joachim Andersen? Is it Diop? Because Isidio, after an initial early struggle in the game against Wolves, he was a lot better as the game went on. And he's been really solid, really dependable when he's been called upon this season. Whereas Joachim Andersen has been a little bit up and down.
00:19:03
Speaker
Just when you think he has a good performance, then he has not quite so good performance. So he's been a little bit inconsistent. Whereas Isidio has certainly been been more consistent than the two. I would think he would go with Andersen for this one.
00:19:15
Speaker
And then it's going to be more similar to the Crystal Palace game. some of those players have come back in, but I think you will see Andres Pereira keep his place in the side. Andres Pereira, as we know, he's got a lot of criticism this season, but I feel like recent performances have been good. Maybe the fact that he has spent a bit of time on the bench has done him a little favour. He's taken him out of the firing line, and then he's come off the bench in certain games and made an impression, noticeably Newcastle away and in a game against Notting Forest as well. and i I thought he was another impressive performer in midweek, and
00:19:47
Speaker
And of course, we remember early in the season, there was a big moment in that game, which Andres Pereira was at the heart of, wasn't it? When he could have squared the ball to Alex Iwobi, who's breaking three on goal. And I think after that point on, it's just been...
00:19:59
Speaker
a heap of criticism some of it fair at times but a lot of it unfair and some of it has just been a bit of pile on but i think he has played well recently so i think even if emil smith rowe is back fully fit i would like to see andres pereira giving a nod we know sander burger not sander burger we know sasa lukic picked up his 10th bucking in midweek but that has no effect on this game so there's even more reason to play him this weekend isn't it the fact that he's going to miss the next two league games he's going to have little breather himself as well you're not going to see him in the fulham shirt for a while after this because they got those two games and then there's an international break so you want him ready rearing to go and then the other question is is who leads the line
00:20:39
Speaker
Is it Muniz or is it Jimenez? And for me, I think it should be Rodrigo Muniz. And I think if Rodrigo Muniz can put in a good performance here, then I think he almost reclaims the shirt back, the shirt that he had at the start of the season, because he has been impressive recently.
00:20:55
Speaker
Every part of his game was working well against Wolves and he scores important goals. He doesn't score the goal to round off a 3-0, 4-0 win. He's often coming off the bench and he's he's getting that goal. He's only be labelled a super sub.
00:21:08
Speaker
Because obviously that means you're not starting games. But he proved midweek that he can start games and be effective in doing so at his best. He's an absolute havoc. He's an absolute nuisance for defenders to come up against. So no problem starting him again.
00:21:23
Speaker
Manchester United have their problems of their own, don't they? They have some injury problems. One of their bright sparks this season, Ahmed Diallo, that's unfortunate. Unfortunate for him, unfortunate for Manchester United because he's rescued them on a number of occasions.
00:21:36
Speaker
And he's going to be out for the the rest of the season though. So that that's a big blow for them. They've got a suspension themselves with Dorgou getting that red card against Ipswich. His one does carry over to the FA Cup, unlike Sassilukic's. So that's a problem for them.
00:21:52
Speaker
It's been a problem position for a long time because of the injuries to Luke Shaw and and and to Malassia, who seem to never be fit. So he's got some rearranging of his back line to do there.
00:22:03
Speaker
You could potentially see Dallo go over to a left wing back and Masraoui over to right wing back. And Adama Traore, whoever he's up against, I think he'll be licking his lips and fancying his chances. There's no Lissandro Martinez. He's another one out with a long-term injury. So we're not going to see the renewal of that battle.
00:22:20
Speaker
But Adama Traore, I think his confidence is back after starting the season... Well, and looking like he was going to cement this place in the Fulham team, started to wane a bit and performance was a little bit indifferent, but it's good to see him back to something like his best because when he is at his absolute best, then he's a nightmare.
00:22:42
Speaker
Look, I don't think any full-back in the world would enjoy Adama Troia running at him. Sometimes what he does with the ball, and sometimes what he does in terms of end product can be questioned.
00:22:53
Speaker
But we've seen in the last couple of games in the league, he's provided assists. One against Wolves, which is something that you don't associate. That that assist for Rodrigo Munez there, and that whipped-in ball against Sturt Nottingham Forest for Smith-Row to score. So performances have been on the up for him, and he could have a major say in this game.

How do I see the game going? I just want to see Fulham... take it to Manchester United, I think in the two performances this season, it's just been very lacklustre. Okay, the one at Old Trafford during the season is is's probably a bit more understandable because it was the first game in the season. Players' fitness levels maybe weren't quite up to par.

were a bit rusty. i think it was Smith-Rowe's debut and it was just one of those games. There wasn't much in it, but at the same time, wasn't the performance you were going to latch on to and and be critical of, given that in fact it was first game the season.

The one a few weeks back at Craven Cottage was more disappointing. And look, Fulham have got a genuine opportunity here, but you've got to be careful saying this when Fulham play Manchester United because something always seems to go wrong, doesn't it?

And my predictions, by the way, haven't been great lately. I started the season on absolute flames, but my form just recently has been patchy to say the least. It's been like Southampton's form. Just put a red mark against it every single time.

And that shows the unpredictability of Fulham, doesn't it? And how... In some games this season where you expected them to do well, they've struggled. Whereas in other games where you think it could be a bit of a struggle, they do well.

So for this one, this is going to be a first on the Daily Fulham podcast. I'm refusing, I'm abstaining from giving a prediction. Because last time I gave a prediction when these two clubs faced off against each other, I was adamant. I was bullish that Fulham were going to win.

And they didn't. And Manchester United got the better of them. It would be almost nightmarish to think. It's almost incomprehensible to think... that any side could possibly lose to Manchester United three times this season.

I mean, Manchester United, they've lost to Spurs three times. Spurs! So that tells you about Manchester United this season. So because i don't want to put a jinx on it, don't want to put a hex on it.

I'm not going to give a prediction. But hopefully, for every Fulham fan's sake, they're able to come out on top. Hopefully they're able to do it in comfortable, convincing the fashion and you don't have to go through the stress of extra time and penalties. But any win, I'm sure you'll all take and it will keep the dream alive, wouldn't it? Of lifting some major silverware whilst also being in the hunt for European qualification via the league.
