Episode 26 - Social Distancing

The Malting Hour
Avatar
120 Plays5 years ago
On this episode we practice social distancing by recording the episode while in our own homes. We discuss what we're doing to stay safe, how to support local businesses and crack open some tasty beers along the way. Please pardon the audio quality, it will be better for the next episode.

Podcasting During the Pandemic

00:00:00
Speaker
This conference will now be recorded. I'm leaving that in. I'll get sued by Logman. Oh, man. Well, welcome to the Molting Hour. The weirdest episode we've ever had to record because we're recording.
00:00:23
Speaker
in separate places. We are doing our best to distance ourselves during this crazy time of the coronavirus. The Rona, as they say. Yeah, as the kids call it. Are the kids calling it the Rona yet? I don't know. Maybe it's just you. But welcome. I originally had thought maybe, I think you and I talked about this, originally thought maybe we shouldn't do an episode, but then I thought,
00:00:52
Speaker
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of our show? Like two friends sitting around talking and drinking beer and enjoying it just because we have to do it in separate homes doesn't mean we can't still do it. Yeah. Agreed. Here we are. So we're doing it. We're just doing it differently. I drank a beer with Kevin and Deb this weekend. I saw my dad. I saw over the phone. Over the phone. I saw my dad.
00:01:22
Speaker
Same thing with Jane today, my mother-in-law and Mike and his family, so we've been doing that. And you were just telling me something fun you were gonna do. Oh yeah, so a couple of friends that I have, tomorrow they had mentioned that they wanted to get together and do a Google Hangout and do kind of like a bar crawl. You know, just go drink in different rooms of your house and yeah. That's a really cool idea. I think I might have to
00:01:49
Speaker
try that as well and see if there's anybody else interested in doing that. Let me know how that goes. I invite you tomorrow. Cool. I have nothing going on. It depends on what app you're using because as we discovered tonight, my computer is completely out of date and I can't. I can't use anything.

Discussing Beers and Canceled Plans

00:02:09
Speaker
Yeah, my phone's great. Yeah, that's true. We're not recording it, so I can use my phone. So we're both drinking before we get anything else. We're both drinking a beer. What are you drinking? I am drinking. He's also filming this with that app. So I had another bottle of that Central Water 17 left, so I decided to crack that open.
00:02:34
Speaker
It's not as good as it was when I first cracked it, and it's a larger bottle, but I'd been doing that as of late. If I open up a larger bottle, I'll just literally pour a little bit of it, and then just throw the cap back on it. I don't give a shit, and then drink it like a dick. So I might finish this tomorrow or tonight. Nice. What kind of beer is it again? It is an anniversary edition beer. It's a malt beverage aged in oak bourbon barrels.
00:03:03
Speaker
I think it's just a small beverage. Smart. That's so nondescriptive. It's beer. Aged. Ooh, my favorite. I love aged beer. Yeah, right? I remember having that with you.
00:03:24
Speaker
I feel like we've had that at least twice together, right? Yeah, because when I initially got it, I had six bottles of it or so. And we've progressed a little bit. I'm vaping as well. Sorry. Sorry, everybody. The audio is going to be weird on this one. Okay. Deal with it. We're trying this out for the first time. Yeah.
00:03:49
Speaker
Yeah, to Roaner. I got a Roaner, that's not funny. So you're drinking that and I cracked open my very last, I don't know if you can see that, my barrel aged narwhal, my 16 ounce can. It's still very, very tasty. I actually went looking for it the other day and I feel like I lucked out and stumbled upon this in a jewel in a suburb where I work on wheeling and they had four packs of it, so I grabbed it, but yeah.
00:04:18
Speaker
So it wasn't good. We're going big. We're going big because, well, you're at home. You're at home this entire time, right? Yep. Well, you can only leave for essentials. Barely left. Barely. I don't know what day it is. So it's funny. So I was supposed to be on vacation this entire week. Well, not vacation. I was supposed to be going to Philadelphia for my mom's treatment. Right.
00:04:47
Speaker
And they pushed it till April 1st or whatever. And so originally, before they pushed it, I was set to go. And I had talked to my mom last week after we had found out that they had closed Benjamin's daycare. So his daycare got closed effective on Friday. So Friday he was home with us.
00:05:08
Speaker
And I was kind of freaking out. I'm like, what the shit are we going to do? And I felt terrible. Like I was going to be leaving and my wife was going to be here with the kid. And then like, she was nervous about me flying. Like her dad was nervous about me flying. It's like, you know, so it was this huge thing. So then I ended up just talking to my mom and I just kind of told her, I was like, Hey, it was like, so Benjamin's going to be home. I don't know what we're going to do. She was like, stay home. She was adamant about me just not coming. I was like,
00:05:37
Speaker
All right. It's another flight. I got to cancel. So I canceled that flight and the hotel and then it ended up getting pushed, but he'll still be home from daycare anyway. So, um, I'm not planning on going, uh, cause it's April 1st. And I know, I mean, originally the tentative reopen date for businesses here was March 31st. Well, and April, April 1st is April fool's day and you don't know who's going to be playing tricks on you if you're trying to travel.
00:06:04
Speaker
That's the worst part about well, but the other thing is too is that they're so here like March 31st when the city shut down or ordered a shutdown of like, you know, don't stay at home. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I'm sorry. You're saying the shutdown of like restaurants. Yeah. So that was shut down with a with a date tentative of return March 31st or whatever. But now the statewide ban goes to April 7th.
00:06:34
Speaker
So all that stuff is still not going to open until at least April 7th. Yeah, the shelter in place is weird.

Impact of COVID-19 on Work and Environment

00:06:45
Speaker
I'm currently commuting back and forth to work. We are considered an essential company. We do provide a place I work for. We provide parts for
00:06:54
Speaker
people in all sorts of medical, food, airplanes, military. So I'm there, unless somebody, God forbid that happens, unless somebody gets sick in my office, I'm there. So traveling back and forth has been crazy. It normally takes me 35 to 40 minutes to get to work, and it took me under a half hour to get to work today. So I was early, so getting some OT.
00:07:24
Speaker
Yeah, the crazy thing too is that like, did you see all the stuff about like the pollution clearing up in all these different areas? In China, China's pollution is clear. The silver lining to all of this, you know, is like, you know, the China stuff clearing up, but it's like
00:07:45
Speaker
Dude, people just stay home, man. I was on these beer groups this weekend, like last night, and I'm reading this shit, and people are like, they're out having bottle shares. And I'm like, dude, that's not how this works. It's the purpose. I just got back from Philly with 10 guys, or Pittsburgh with 10 guys for the weekend, and we just sat in the house. The only thing we did was have food delivered, or we ran out to get essentials. So we're fine. That's not the point, dude.
00:08:11
Speaker
Yeah, that's a piece of purpose. If one of you is infected, you are hanging out with nine other dudes for an entire weekend, it doesn't matter that you're not, you know, sleeping with each other or whatever, like you're in the same area.
00:08:28
Speaker
You know, it just drives me nuts like the, you know, the blatant ignorance that some people have. And some other dude was like, well, you're telling me that I can have a bottle share with my three brothers. Like I can't hang out with them. I'm like, do you live with them? Then no, like, yeah, that's my dad. I went and saw him on Saturday and I told him that, you know, I've been helping him out. Um,
00:08:55
Speaker
My stepmom passed away recently, which is unfortunate, obviously, not Corona related. Luckily, that's the sound of the creaky boards above my house, because I'm in the basement doing this. Where was I at here? Oh, so I've been checking out my dad to make sure he's good, making sure that he's got groceries and stuff. And I told him, you know, hey,
00:09:23
Speaker
As much as I want to come by and see you, it only makes sense that because you're older, I can't come by.
00:09:30
Speaker
and visit you know so he was very understanding and that's why like we're doing tonight we're doing um you know the face chat with each other uh doing this that's what i've been doing with him and you know he's been good and also you know with essentials things that he needs to get um which he's pretty much stocked on uh he did ask me i found out today my dad roger as you may know him from the christmas episode uh refers to ramen as ramen ramen noodles he asked me if i can get him ramen noodles
00:09:57
Speaker
And I said, number one, dad, they're called Robin. And number two, everybody loves Raymond. Everybody loves Raymond Noodles. That's what the show's actually about. I totally missed it. That must have been some underlying thing. There was Raymond Noodles in every episode. I told them, you know, I'll check and see if they got any, because that was one of the first things to go, including Fred.
00:10:20
Speaker
But we have a plan in place that I have keys to his apartment. So when I go there, I'd go all the way up to his front door, like inside the building, up the stairs to his front door, leave the bag there, then go back downstairs. And he would either wear gloves or spray disinfectant on the bag and then pick it up. And then he and I can talk because I can talk from the bottom of the stairs. He can talk from the top of the stairs because we're well over six feet away. I just feel like it's safe for my dad's older.
00:10:46
Speaker
No, those are the things I'm doing.

Supporting Local Breweries

00:10:48
Speaker
The only people I am in contact with, other than my coworkers, who were also like, I'm wearing my mask all the time. It's a really good mask with filters on it that we can replace. It's up to like three weeks that I could wear it in a row. Excuse me, before I have to switch out the filter. But we're all using hand sanitizer. We're all backing away. Even the truck drivers that come to drop off, they are told to grab their paperwork from the front door.
00:11:15
Speaker
and then to go back to the cab of their truck and we load them and we'll let them know when they're done. So we're all taking precautions. That blows my mind that people are still thinking that, hey, let's get together for a bottle share. You want to do a bottle share, do it like this. This is just as fun. This is just as fun. It was kind of funny because somebody had mentioned on their like,
00:11:37
Speaker
What am I supposed to do with all these large format pastry stouts that I bought? I never intended to drink more than an ounce of myself. It's all going to go to waste if I tried to drink it. Somebody was like, here's what you do. You open it up, pour yourself an ounce of the beer, cap it,
00:11:52
Speaker
wipe it down with a Clorox wipe, put it on your front porch, call your buddy, tell him to come pick it up, and repeat this process until all your friends have a one ounce pour, then you all get on the phone together, and then you have your bottle of shit. That's actually not a terrible idea. Well, you and I talked about, even for this episode, I was going to give you a growler over on the juice, and then the more I thought about it, just with you, with your son,
00:12:17
Speaker
I was like, you know, let's just ride this out for at least a week or two and see where we're at. And then, you know, if neither one of us are showing signs that I have no problem, either drop it off and you can Clorox wipe it off or, you know, you can pick it up from me. That's fine. I just would hate to. Just pee on the bottle. Totally. Oh, here she comes again. Hold on. Here come some steps. We'll pause for this. Wait for it.
00:12:48
Speaker
No, it does pick it up. I know it'll be interesting to hear. This is why we don't record at my house for episodes. Well, we could do it when nobody's home. Yeah, that's true. Or everybody don't walk around upstairs. But yeah, so it's definitely something that I think everyone, obviously everyone's been affected by. It's just a really weird time. Especially, I gotta, one of the things I wanna
00:13:16
Speaker
I don't know what it's like in other states or other cities that, you know, with businesses, especially small businesses, we know a lot of people that own small businesses who are struggling right now, who are struggling before coming out of the winter months. These are the months where they normally make their money back. They lived off those Christmas sales or the holiday sales to get to this point where they can make more money.
00:13:41
Speaker
and now being shut down, oh, more steps. With now being shut down, they're not able to reap the benefits of having people come in. But our city and state are super cool, Illinois, Chicago, with allowing pickups and curbside pickups from breweries. Some breweries are able to do delivery services, Lake Effect from our last episode, they just started doing delivery. So if anybody's listening to this, which will still be while we're on,
00:14:10
Speaker
you know, stay in place type of lockdown here. You can beer from Lake Effect if you're in the area, which is pretty vast. I'm not, it's the all Northwest side, that's for sure. But, you know, I know places like Maplewood and Old Irving, they all have, they have curbside pickup where you can order online Hunani, Hubbard's Cave, they all have pickup.
00:14:33
Speaker
Yeah, and I know that, well, I know Lake Effect, even they expanded their delivery area. So he's offering to go out further than he was, you know, originally, I think he added like another zip code or something. So yeah, it's pretty sweet that places are actually doing that. Because yeah, like, so these, and I guess that's probably important to note is that like,
00:14:56
Speaker
Um, for a lot of places, like the ability to deliver your own beer has never been allowed. Right. You know, it's a crazy, it's a crazy law. It's a crazy law. If you're a, like, if you're not a home brewer, but like, if you're an independent craft brewer, um, it's like self-distribution is something that's allowed in Illinois to a certain scale.
00:15:20
Speaker
you can only produce a certain amount of barrels. And then if you go above that, then you have to go to a distributor, which is still kind of ridiculous. But even now I think it's still kind of split. Like even if you hit that limit, a portion of your stuff can go be self distributed and then the other can go still like through a distributor. But now it's like, you can self distribute, distribute if you want. Like if you want to go deliver stuff to somebody, you can like,
00:15:45
Speaker
And even distributors are still getting beer. I saw Maplewood put a post up today that if you can't make taproom, you can use their beer finder. So they're utilizing both their own self-distribution, which is people coming in and picking up from them, or go ahead and make deliveries, and also saying, hey, we're available in these spots. Liquor stores that are still open. Binnies is still open. Those are not Chicago. Binnies are huge.
00:16:14
Speaker
liquor store, basically. Awesome selection, no matter what binnies you go to. I mean, you're about to get something cooler. Hey, binnies, give us some money. That's an ad. Binnies, we got cool shit, even during the Rona. I like that you call it the Rona. I'm gonna start using the Rona. My Rona.
00:16:36
Speaker
And actually, one of the cool things will, and I'm going to give this shout out because it'll still, I'm assuming it'll still be available, but with Lake Effect and Stephanie Fannies, they have a, Clint started doing large format bottles for this specific situation that we're all in. A lot of the beers, I saw at least the Stout's
00:16:59
Speaker
Excuse me, and it goes up. He put espresso gun stout in a large format. He put the French silk pie beer in a large format and he put the blueberry goes up high beer in a large format. So if you buy one of those large format beers, you get a pie as well. I'm not sure the price but so if you buy the French silk pie beer, you get a French silk pie. That's like they're both like 16 bucks. Yeah, so I mean, delivery.
00:17:24
Speaker
Yeah, so you're getting a bomb ass bomber and a bomb ass pie, you know, and it's supporting two local businesses. So anybody who is who listens to us and you are in our area, which I'm assuming a lot of the
00:17:40
Speaker
people who actually check out our podcast are. Those are some options you can do. And I will say both beers, by the way, are really good. And Fanny's pies are delicious. So you want to splurge, you know, get yourself a beer and a pie. That's Fanny's in Reykjavรญk. I'm not doing anything anyways. You're sitting at home with your pants off, so let's go get a pie. Have some carbs. Have some more carbs.
00:18:04
Speaker
Actually, it was funny right before we started recording Clark had told me that he had He had purchased another might meets right four pack And before and right before we started recording he did the almond. Oh god, what was it? Whatever the almond one was he checked in and goes Oh without having to try all the other might meets right in my way I'm able to actually enjoy this and I said all the other might meet right beer or the molting hour guys distracting you What?
00:18:33
Speaker
If we can figure out a way to have a guest, because we're going to probably have to record one more episode during this, because who knows how long it's going to have. We'll figure that out. But if not, we'll just keep doing this. Well, so the cool thing, so we had looked, I'm not going to name the service, but I looked into a service to kind of do podcasts. Tony's computer is a little antiquated, so
00:18:52
Speaker
I'm still running Windows Vista but I will say this that this computer is my wife's old computer and it has lasted through everything and this is the actual computer I'm recording on and it's the actual computer that edits the podcast so it still has a use. I just can't do anything modern.

Podcast Tech Challenges

00:19:13
Speaker
Z's computer for a while too or no? No, that one that I got from my daughter who ended up getting an Apple computer. I got her old computer, but she had wrecked the power that we actually plugged in the computer to the point where I had to like move it different ways to finally now where it just won't turn on. So I gave her a hundred bucks for it so she can buy her new computer. So I basically got $100 paperweight. Nice. Lovely.
00:19:43
Speaker
kind of a big deal. But yeah, I'm sorry, what were you saying? I'm gonna say you paid her 100 bucks. Just be like, Hey, I need to use your computer for a podcast. True, but she's also using it. I have to read her midterm after this. She texted me while I was down here recording that you read my paper and I was like, Yeah, I just how what does it do? So tomorrow I'm like, I'll have it read tonight for sure.
00:20:08
Speaker
Yeah, so the cool thing about anyway, so back to the like the cool thing about this service was like we could have unlimited guests Yeah on on the show and everyone basically logs in from wherever they are And there's like an interface that you can so like the intro we use for The podcast let's say if we wanted to do it on there we could upload the intro Are you talking about the one that I pointed out that I mentioned to you? No, no, no the one the one that I
00:20:33
Speaker
the original one that I signed up for that I thought we were going to use. That one like during like while we're live, I could hit the button and it'll play the intro and we could like do the intro live and then like. That's the same thing with the one that I found. I'm going to say anchor anchor anchor was the one that I checked out. But only problem is, is that it's only gone either. So I don't know if we can figure out a way that like if we recorded it, there's I mean, because so with this place,
00:20:59
Speaker
It had two things one is I think you pull the audio down and edit it yourself all otherwise Like the I signed up for the professional plan who are professionals for a 14-day trial and it actually gave you You get 10 hours a month of Post-production we're basically and I think somebody else reviews your podcast and does all the post-production work for you and
00:21:25
Speaker
Oh, we have a production company? Weird. During the podcast, there's a chat section that said where you can make notes about, hey, remove this cough, get rid of this, blah, blah, blah, as the podcast is going. And those notes go over to the editors, and they take it all out. Maybe that's something we should look into. We can sound a little bit more professional. All right, well, we'll see. We'll see what we're doing.
00:21:51
Speaker
Yeah, we'll see where we're going. We'll also see how this turns out. If this turns out OK, we could probably still kind of try to swing this same format. Yeah, no, this is. I mean, even even for other times where you and I maybe just can't get together, I'm fine with this. The only thing about that, well, so with what we're using, all right, I'm going to say we're using go to meeting. Yeah, right now.
00:22:14
Speaker
which other people can be a part of. So if we needed to have a guest come in, we could do that. I'm trying to think of other guests that would be able to record, and actually most of our guests could. Shalonda could, Clark could, Kevin could, I'm sure Pat could. Pat could record himself too, you know what I mean? I bring up Pat because Pat is due to come back on the show. If you've been following the show, Pat was on, Pat did the Bourbon County blowout our very first, and last time we did a giant,
00:22:43
Speaker
And that was like really when we first, that was like at the beginning of this entire thing. We decided like, yeah.

Home Brewing Adventures

00:22:51
Speaker
And we sat on the episode for a while too because I had to edit it so much. And then part of the audio was racked and we had to like basically we recorded a second half, remember? Oh yeah. Well, and also we forgot to record a second half. Then went back to do another half. It did not turn out and it was terrible. They had to do it again. We drank so much bourbon count last year.
00:23:13
Speaker
I have one 2019 bottle left that I actually tried to do a, I did a vanilla bean recently. I splurged and bought a jar that said one vanilla bean and in it were two vanilla beans. So I said, I'll pay for those. Where did you buy one vanilla bean from? Jewel. Jewel has, but they're like $7.99 for a vanilla bean.
00:23:37
Speaker
But this had two vanilla beans in it and I said, haha, not today, Jewel. And so I did it. So I actually did a French press with it. Turned out pretty good. And then I poured the rest over some Thin Mint Girl's Galco Gaze, which did not turn out as tasty as I thought it was going to be. But whatever. That's for another episode. I mean, God knows if it would ever get delivered now, but I have a package of
00:24:11
Speaker
Madagascar vanilla That like I had saved I didn't put it in my cart on Amazon, but I'd saved it So every time I go to check out it's like hey you saved this I'm sure you don't want to buy this and I'm like dude I'm buying diapers right now Yes, I do, but this is not a necessity. It's still not a necessity I was like man it would be like so when I was originally gonna be off this week. I was like I
00:24:33
Speaker
I should just buy some stuff and brew a beer. That'll be awesome. But then I was like, wait, the kids home. So yeah, that's a little different. Yeah. And you know, I just saw that, you know, known brewing who you kind of developed a relationship with them there when they first talked to the owner. And we've yet to actually have them on they just celebrated their one year anniversary. That's
00:24:56
Speaker
That's something you and I talked about having on the show this year, having them on the show this year. So that'll definitely happen. They're doing delivery and curbside pickup. And I just found out that Brew and Grow's suburban locations are doing curbside pickup and Chicago is working on it. So I think I'm still going to try and brew a beer during this time. I figured why not. And Jeff,
00:25:23
Speaker
If Jeff comes by to brew with me, he's got to stand six feet away from me the entire time. Which is fine, because he's just in the yard. He's just in the yard across from me. What I'll do is I'll brew in the yard instead, and he can just stay in his yard. And then I'll just hand it, I'll be like, hey, now you can wash all my stuff. I'll just hand it over the fence, put it on the grass, and he can wash it. And then I'll just go in his yard and pick it up. Because what good's a brewing assistant if they're not going to wash your stuff?
00:25:52
Speaker
Dude, just fill up your pool with stars, Dan. It's a fantastic idea. Jeff here, signed up. Actually, because it's going to be almost 60 degrees on Wednesday from when I checked, my plan is, yeah, it's going to be good, I hope. I saw Jeff on Saturday, and again, we were well over six feet away from each other in our yards talking to each other. And I said, you know, next,
00:26:20
Speaker
this Wednesday coming up, we should do a happy hour in our yards where, you know, we're just having some drinks with each other. And that's it. We're just not in each other's yards, but still being social. So, see how that goes. I'll report that on the next episode. Yeah. Fire up the barbecue. Thought about that too. I stocked up a bunch of meat. But here, sanitize this real quick. Try this and sanitize it.
00:26:48
Speaker
Dip it in vodka and then eat it. Actually my wife had asked me recently if we had vodka because she's trying to make her own home sanitizer. I think we have just enough for the amount that she wants to do. I use it for brewing most of the time. What's weird right now is that for the first time of us doing an episode, I can see how long we've recorded. Since my phone, I did not charge before this,
00:27:16
Speaker
I didn't think we were going to do this, but I'm going to call a break real quick. Do you mind if we take a break? Yeah, we'll talk a little bit. All right. Just like last episode, you know what? I'm playing music that I don't care if it's popular. Who's listening? You guys are listening. You're our friends. And until somebody says otherwise, there you go. All right, so we'll be right back.
00:28:24
Speaker
That's who making friends like you're also close to me
00:29:10
Speaker
I am torn
00:30:28
Speaker
We're here
00:31:22
Speaker
This conference will now be recorded. And we're back. Oh man, I was, I wanted to, I don't know if my, I feel like she's walking around upstairs, but I was going to call Mackenzie down here to yell that. But, um, you know, I got to read her term paper still midterm. You're still walking around going upstairs. I'm pretty sure that's my way. Um, so I opened up another, uh,
00:31:51
Speaker
And it's I'll show you you gave this to me for oh You gave this to me. So I have one left. I got one left of these
00:32:00
Speaker
I've got one left. I might just use the audio from here because that probably clips like hell from what you recorded. So I've got this. I got a morbidly obese pug. I've got a big hugs left and I've got what's the other stout that I have left. There's another big format stout that I have.
00:32:22
Speaker
those four doubts that I have still in. Oh, dude, I just recorded over some audio. Oh no. This is you want to check it and see if it's good. I can pause my recording. Now, I mean, there's going to be a clip where I'm missing. It's like two minutes. Hold on. I'm moving this. That's right.
00:32:50
Speaker
Oh, we'll adjust it in post. And when everybody hears this, they're like, oh, that's what they were talking about. Oh, dumbasses. Wait, actually, while you're doing that, I'm going to run in my fridge, which is right by me, and figure out what the other stout is. Hold on. OK. Yeah, you do that. Great. Later. Bye.
00:33:12
Speaker
It is. I'm going to bring Kevin onto this. He's never had it. I've got big hugs from Half Acre, their Coffee Imperial Stout. I've got one more coffee dinosmores. I've got espresso gone stout from Lake Effect.
00:33:31
Speaker
And what the hell? I just ran over there. I don't know what the fourth one is. What was the other one I mentioned before? I don't know. But anyways, I've got four 16 ounce cans of stouts. And I think we save it to do a spring stout episode where it's springtime. No one's really drinking stouts that much.
00:33:48
Speaker
We're going to, that's what we're gonna do. And you're pouring a little bit more, as I can see, of that anniversary beer. Brandon, you told me after you bought this for me for my birthday, thank you very much, that you actually never had the coffee dinosaurs, correct? Negative, I have not. So I didn't, I thought I did, but I looked back and I untapped and this was the first actual coffee dinosaurs I've ever had. The rest have just been dinosaurs.
00:34:16
Speaker
And I will say this, I like dinosmores, but man, the coffee dinosmores is way better. Yeah. And you know what, what, what is kind of funny is when dinosmores or dinosmores first came out, it was like, I like dinosmores. Yeah. It was like an off the shelf. Like it was hard to find. And like, I remember like there was releases at the brewery and like people would line up and like,
00:34:44
Speaker
would sell out, but now it's a shelf beer now. Not completely, but I was surprised when I went in and bought that coffee that there was multiples there. It's still available at Binney's and just recently the Binney's by me in Portage Park didn't have, because I got the, someone gave Jessica, Jessica Brady gave me the four pack of the Big Hugs Imperial Stout, Coffee Stout.
00:35:11
Speaker
And at Binnie's, they had the two packs just sitting there. And just recently, this Saturday, when I went, I went to go and stock up on some random beers. They no longer had it. And Kevin ended up with a vanilla big hugs.
00:35:26
Speaker
His wife went and grabbed it and he said, oh, look what I got. And I said, that doesn't look like mine. What, what is that? He said, I'm like, is this just coffee? He's like, yeah. I zoomed in. I go, dude, you got a very, that's the vanilla one. So he said it was really good. So he said, he's going to save that. So, uh, once this is all done, we'll do a spring stout, uh, episode where you can all sit around, Glenn, maybe we'll bring, maybe we'll bring Clark around. Uh, fan favorite, Clark Fetridge comes back.
00:35:55
Speaker
for the 90th time for another episode of The Malting Hour. All right, so Clark is the fan favorite because he's like one of our biggest fans and he loves himself. You guys are best friends. Although I think, no, I love Clark and he's actually good on the podcast.
00:36:18
Speaker
I'm so desperate to find a way to get Pat back on. Having both of them on an episode, I think, would be pretty sweet. I agree. I agree. I just want Pat back on the show. And again, for those of you who have been listening, or maybe for some reason, this is where you've jumped in, I think this is episode 26.
00:36:38
Speaker
which blows my mind that we've done 26 episodes or 25 episodes. You should go back and listen to the Berber County Blowout, parts one and two, because Pat is great. You know, it's funny, you know what I thought of like, you know, doing all these episodes, I was like, maybe we should have done seasons, like we could have been a seasonal podcast. Like the Robert Bergany one?
00:36:59
Speaker
I'm Ron Burgundy? Yeah, we could. I mean, that's still an option. We could always do seasons and record a whole bunch and then take the summer off, which we end up doing anyway. Yeah. Which maybe we should start doing that. Maybe we should go back to that. But I just love doing the show with you, man. We're taking the summer off starting now. Bye. See you guys later.
00:37:23
Speaker
And that's the end of the show. Thanks for tuning in. And part of the hiatus and taking time off is because, I mean, we want to stay relevant and we want to be able to think of new content. I mean, it's like last year was an interesting year when we started the podcast because, you know, my wife was pregnant with my first son and he was born. What's your first one? Are you saying there's a second on the way?
00:37:54
Speaker
That's what they're calling it on the internet, it's the coronials. So like, you know, taking last summer off kind of was helpful. But this summer, like, I don't know, like, I'm looking forward to actually doing stuff with like, more homebrew talk and all that good stuff.
00:38:14
Speaker
I've talked about Homebrewers a thousand times of people that I know and I've actually reached out to them and they said, oh, you still want me to be on your, like they almost made it like, why would you want me on your show? As if our show was something bigger than them. It's like, no, this is like a Homebrew podcast. And when I say Homebrew podcast, it's bigger than them.
00:38:39
Speaker
No, I would love, I would absolutely love to have some home brewers on here to drink some beers with them. Try their beers, talk about their beers. I definitely want, Clark and I both right now have our New England IPAs on tap again. He went back, I think he went back to his ways of adding flour. Clark, you can correct me if I'm wrong. Stupid, stupid bastards.
00:39:05
Speaker
But hey, he said it's better. And actually, if anybody has ever listened to basic brewing, which I've plugged so many times, James Spencer, basic brewing, we've been our beers have been featured on the show, the monster cereal beers, which they just redid a monster burial, monster burial, monster, cereal, monster, monster burial, they reburied a monster, a monster cereal beer, where they
00:39:28
Speaker
dry hopped or dry cereal the beer and they found out that, well, these are some home brewers they talked to, that they got more flavor from the cereal that way. But, hmm, where was I going? Where was I going with this? How did I get to basic brewing from Clark?
00:39:50
Speaker
We were talking about home brewers being on the podcast. Oh, yes. And Clark went back to you. I think Clark, Clark, again, Mark, I think I'm wrong. Clark may have added flour to his beer again, but they did an episode of just using straight flour for brewing because you could still get sugars from that. And I actually reached out to James Spencer to find out what exactly was used to make this
00:40:15
Speaker
batch of beer and there's tons of things that I've heard from other podcasts of stuff that I want to do. Home brewing wise, I just brew so randomly. I brew often but I brew randomly that by the time we get like the the episode what the might be is right episode when I brought was my pale ale for you guys to try. I feel like that's kind of fun too to do something like that to bring something in and see what you guys think about a beer and you know Clark also does have that idea for the mystery beer episode.
00:40:47
Speaker
And then we have to figure it out. So yeah, we'll take some time off again in the summer. But yeah, like you said, I'm now more so than ever with everything going on.
00:41:00
Speaker
I'm looking forward to spending time with you and your family, my godson, which tonight I almost drank out of that glass. I've yet to drink out of that glass. I feel like I can't drink out of the godfather glass until you and I are actually hanging out together. So I have it sitting on my glass shelf right now. Well, that's awesome. But interesting news in the whole podcast or podcast, Craft Brew World. We are the podcast world.
00:41:30
Speaker
Yeah, we are the budget as well. We are. So like I just happened to open up my phone and then like Facebook was open and something popped up about in our neighborhood, there is an application for an ordinance change that people have to agree to, that Printers Row Brewing is looking to locate a property at 4801 North Austin Avenue in Chicago.
00:41:59
Speaker
they intend to use the property as a brewery with a tasting room. 4801, that's without giving away my address, that's not far from me. No, but that's like Lawrence and Austin. Wait, you mean Lawrence and Ashland or Lawrence and Austin?
00:42:17
Speaker
Yeah, that's so close. That's so close to me. No, I know. That's close to me too. Okay, good. We're on the same page. Great, great, great. That would be fantastic. And if people don't know, Printers Row includes Beguile, Dovetail, Empirical. No, you're thinking of Brewers Row. Oh, what the hell is Printers Row then? Printers Row Brewing is located at 4206 North Hamlin currently. That's an actual brewery. Apparently.
00:42:47
Speaker
Oh, fuck, I know nothing then. I thought, boy, I'm gonna head all of this out. I don't know, my city. I'm not editing any of this out. Well, I like, I swear I've heard the name before, but. Okay, well, hey, if nothing, I would love nothing more than to have an actual like tasting room.
00:43:06
Speaker
by us in our neighborhood. I know Clint's been trying to do that, and he talked about it in the last episode, I believe, whether it was on mic or not.

Community and Challenges During COVID-19

00:43:17
Speaker
I know that he's trying to find a spot. He was originally looking at Jefferson Park, but it doesn't look like that that's feasible right now. It's not something that's going to be able to happen, unfortunately. So wherever he ends up,
00:43:31
Speaker
I'm gonna follow like, I love their stuff. Actually, I almost opened up the French silk stout, the stout brew with lactose and cocoa nibs, the collaboration beer they did with Fanny's, but I didn't, I went with dino s'mores instead. So you and I can drink that French silk together. Yeah, I was almost, I was going to do like the delivery of the pie and the beer, but then I was like,
00:43:57
Speaker
I just don't want to have pie in the house. Because I mean, you know, you could always leave it on the steps, like the bottle share. And if you want me to come grab a slice of friends of fire, it's a five inch pie, dude. Take half of it.
00:44:13
Speaker
Perfect. So we're sold that we're gonna sit on your porch. You'll stay inside. We'll split half the beer and half the pie and we'll record the episode about it. We're doing that. Yeah, that's a great idea. I almost thought about doing that as well. Doing short while we're in this situation that we're in is maybe doing short little videos of
00:44:36
Speaker
True. Yeah, you're not saving that bear. I'm watching him pour it via video. He's like me tonight. You know what? It's Monday night. We don't need an after the final pour tonight. It's all being poured. It's all being poured. But I thought about maybe doing just random videos on our Instagram. Maybe you and I go back and forth and
00:45:00
Speaker
every now and then when you crack open a beer, just talk about it and that's it. You know, just individual recording. So maybe that's something we'll be doing. And if we do it, obviously we'll let you guys know on the internet. I'm glad no one is actually really can see the video between you and I right now.
00:45:23
Speaker
That's true, that's true. I think by the end of the night, you and I should do a virtual cheers. And we just, we post that as a picture for the episode. What are you doing?
00:45:38
Speaker
You, I saw when you ordered those, you just, how do you pronounce that? What is that? Pocky. Pocky. The Pocky One Chip Challenge. And I know that Alarmus did that as well. My friend Emil, Emil was a group member, Emil was in that video and Brandon's got four of them. And there's four more upstairs. Jesus Christ. I would love to do that for an after the final pour.
00:46:07
Speaker
do it after the final pour, just that chip and see how long we can last. We're gonna do that soon. How long do those chips last for? There's still people that are doing it like years after. Best Buy April 1st, 2020. Oh my God. Oh my God. So,
00:46:29
Speaker
I still see people doing the old, old one, so it's fun. That would be actually, you know what, we know what we could do. Come back episode. Or I could come by, you could leave one on the porch and we could just do it like this separately. I think we should do that. I'll drop off Run the Juice, my New England IPA, the fourth version of it, and I'll grab a chip and then we'll drink the beer, we'll talk about it, and the second half will just be us in pain. Yep, yeah, totally.
00:46:59
Speaker
And then I'll record the next morning while I'm in pain. Yeah, not happy about that decision I made. But I want to do that. Actually, you and I had also talked about doing wings and stuff.
00:47:13
Speaker
We've got a lot of ideas. We've got a lot of ideas that we want to get through this year. And all I hope is that everybody stays safe and that everybody just does what they're supposed to do so that we can continue going or not continue, but go back to the way things things were. You know, I just want to go back to where we could all hang out together.
00:47:36
Speaker
We could do things together and just, you know, spring is here technically. In Chicago, you wouldn't think that last night with the snow. But the temperature is getting warmer, but this is the time of year that I look forward to seeing everybody. And I just want everyone to be safe and healthy so that we can all get back to this. So, you know, wash your hands, stay inside, and do all that. This sounds like the end of the episode. But it's not yet.
00:48:03
Speaker
We're at the 45 minute mark, so there's 15 more minutes to go to make it a full episode for us. We might not make it to a full hour, but I'm okay with that. Mainly because it's a Monday night, we're doing this remotely. I gotta get up and leave for work in the morning. I do have to get up for work in the morning, except it takes under a half hour to get there, so really it's not that bad.
00:48:34
Speaker
Yeah, it's actually been pretty nice. And like I said, everybody at my job has been very aware of the situation we're all in. We're all there. We all have to be there. We are essential. And we're all just making sure everybody's safe and in good health. I hope that everybody listening is safe and in good health. You guys are doing everything that you need to do to make sure that this thing doesn't spread.
00:49:00
Speaker
It's pretty crazy. I'm grateful for everybody that is still out there working. That's essential, not places that think they're essential because they want to make money, but places that are essential. I have friends who work at grocery stores who are out there all the time. Throughout all of this, they go in like it's their regular job. I'm very grateful for all those people. Even the mail, people delivering my mail. That's awesome. That's great.
00:49:29
Speaker
You know, let's, let's, let's cheers to, yeah, let's do a virtual cheers. You ready? Do I do our virtual cheers? I'm gonna, I'm gonna, wait, I see if I can do a screenshot. Well, no, no, my hands over it. Hold on. All right, I knew what we're trying to do. There you go. You ready? My giant thread. Here we go. Hey, screenshot double. Yeah. Cool. Your face was covered. Oh, nice.
00:49:58
Speaker
Um, yeah, cheers everybody who's, who's still out there working and, and helping our world move. That is important and we thank you. And hopefully we're not on the shitter after this. That got real. No, no, I'm just hoping that we're not all pooping.
00:50:23
Speaker
after this. It's not all poop after this. You guys know what I'm saying? You guys know what I'm saying? Okay, great, great. The plumbers will be our saviors. Hey, plumbers are essential. Plumbers are essential. Yeah. Just in case all that toilet paper everybody bought, you morons. Jesus Christ. No, there was an article about people that, you know, hey, it's great that everybody's using, like, Lysol disinfecting wipes to wipe down their house, but they are not flushable.
00:50:52
Speaker
People are watching them in mass and like, fucking this shit up. What I went to Benny is on Saturday when I stopped in there, um, practice social distancing, even like while we're in the, while I was in the house with everybody, like we didn't say anything, but like there was me and like another guy and he was looking at something and I was going to walk past him and I kind of like cowered into myself and I was like, Hey, sorry, thanks. Okay. Go. And I kept on walking and they like, you could tell he was appreciative of that.
00:51:22
Speaker
When I was in the parking lot, I saw latex gloves just laying in a parking spot. That is the exact opposite of what we should be doing. If you're wearing gloves, throw them away. Throw them away in the garbage can. Don't throw them in the parking lot. That's dumb. That defeats the purpose. Sure, fine. You're okay. But think about the person that has to go there and pick them up. Or if they're just flopping around in the wind and someone happens to come in contact with it,
00:51:52
Speaker
to have just possibly spread it. It's common sense, but whatever. Not whatever, but whatever. People don't have common sense is what I mean by whatever. People are dumb. Some people. Some people. Some people. Well, Brandon, I think we got this. I think we got it. This was an interesting way to do an episode. I think if anything, if we can't ever meet up for an episode, I think this works. We did it. We figured it out, man.
00:52:22
Speaker
Not bad. Not bad at all, man. All right, well, yeah, me too, man. I love you, buddy, and I love your family, and I hope you guys are safe, and I hope you guys stay safe. And I look, oh, Burp, sorry. That Burp was out of love. I look forward to seeing you guys after all this. I look forward, I mean, what I'd like to do is FaceTime with you guys and the family sometime soon. Yeah, that's a keeper. That face you just made right there, that was a keeper.
00:52:49
Speaker
I look forward to that and I look forward to actually hanging out with you guys soon. And I love you guys. We love you too, man. Thanks, man. And thank you everybody for listening. We hope this rambling of drinking and talking made your day on this Monday or whenever you haven't listened to this. And, you know, continue to spread the love and check in on each other, you know? Keep it real. All right. Well, keep it safe.
00:53:16
Speaker
Keep it, keep it real and keep it safe. That's, that's good. I like that. I'm going to tattoo it on my butt. I'm going to tattoo it myself though, because I don't think tattoo parlors are open right now. No, probably not. All right. Well, we're going to wrap up the show with that. Thanks everybody for listening. Brandon, I love you and I'll see you guys later. Bye guys.
