What up, Checkerheads? This is Rob from Checkered Past. This episode is part one of a three-part series recorded at SPI Fest 2024 in Connecticut.

Live Show Debut

00:00:08
Speaker
The first part of the episode will be our live episode from day one featuring some very special guests. Then engineer Joey and I will share some stories about our journey in from Canada, plus an overview of the Friday show. So without further ado, here is CPSC live from Connecticut, SPI Fest 2024. Everyone's so patient. Woo!
00:00:31
Speaker
SBI Fest 2, eh? So many pretty people. On this episode, New England isn't just for IPAs anymore. We enter a black hole of monsters, but warning, it's dystopia. Maybe it's checkered past the skydcast live from SBI Fest 2.
00:01:11
Speaker
That made me so out of breath last year. What up checker heads. Welcome to Checker Pastas God, Castle, Celine and

Meet the Hosts and Guests

00:01:18
Speaker
Rob. The show where a kinetic cut man and a lighthouse gorilla radio explore the history and influence of a different band each episode. That sucked. Come on. Because there's lighthouses nearby, right? um and hope to bring in new fans along the way. I'm Rob and this is my sister and co-host, the Voya Fam herself, Saloon!
00:01:52
Speaker
Is that your friend? Joey, engineer it.
00:01:59
Speaker
so love soin and rob of checker past this godca and this is our co-host with the most tot engineer joey yeah what a mix What a pop engineer, Joey. You're easily the most popular part of this podcast. That's why you have the gold microphone. It's true. I'm like the Lady Gaga of this microphone podcast thing. We went to Starbucks today, me and Joey to go pick up our our awesome Starbucks order, and I immediately got clocked with my shirt, said Ska. I have these Ska nails going, and our barista was like... You're not being subtle. No, was like, oh Ska, are you going to SPI Fest 2?
00:02:38
Speaker
He's not here. Yeah, it's true. It happened. I was there. And of course, when he dropped our food off at the corner, he was like, I'm sorry for this. Can you come pick it up, pick it up?
00:02:50
Speaker
So like, why isn't he here? That's funny as shit. Where is he? Yeah. It's probably working. We almost kicked Craig off the podcast to help him come as a guest. Hey, what the fuck, Joey? Don't give it away. Oh, shit. Honestly, he was way more charismatic. I wasn't there, but I know. We drove, so to get here, some people know how we got here, but we're from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, which is like a fucking, a million miles from here. And we flew four hours into Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, and then drove seven hours in to Connecticut, because there's no direct flights anywhere nearby. Yeah, to you. For you. For you. For you. To little people. Yeah.
00:03:37
Speaker
And we drove, we we realized as we were driving that we were driving directly through the milk belt of the USA.

Road Trip Stories

00:03:45
Speaker
The milk belt? sam middlebel What the fuck is with all the ice cream? Why is there so much ice cream? It's crazy. Every fucking place. What do you guys like? Not like pooping? So we found out that Stewart's is like an ice cream shop, but where we're from, that's just a brand of root beer. It's really weird. yeah okay It's true. We don't have that much time. What else is in the news? Oh, look at that. Look at this guy. Oh, my god. The Scabadook is here. The Scabadook is here. The Scabadook is for the people. Boo. When I say, Sky, you skate. Boo. Scabadook. Scabadook. Boo.
00:04:30
Speaker
Everyone, this is the Scobadook. He's been here before. He's been on the podcast before. He kidnapped me and made me listen to 311 for 24 hours straight. Because I was a hater. Still sucks. You are a hater. Why are you here? Why are you at SPI Fest 2, Scobadook? Well, because you and I have beefs. I'm an expert on beefs. And I'm here to do a lecture circuit on beefs. There's a lot of beefs in the news lately. There's a lot of beefs in the news lately. With Kendrick and Drake and so you know. Baby Storm's getting in there. The beef expert. Yeah. I'm here to speak about beefs. So let's talk about Kendrick and Drake then. Where where are you at with this beef? This has got to be the apex beef right now.
00:05:11
Speaker
Well, it doesn't compare to the beef that we have. However, I would say that I'm Team Kendrick on this beef. Obviously. Even as Canadians, we do not stand by Drake. He is a weenie. No, we don't need him. He definitely has had a BBL. I would say there is no evidence on Drake's side. So I feel like all claims are not substantiated. limit Limited bars. It seems like intelligent. Yes, yes. yeah How about, okay, so did you hear that Macklemore got in on that one? Oh, I find that incredible. However, the beef...
00:05:45
Speaker
It's a little thin. It's just more like, I'm making a point, which is great. But in terms of beefs, it's not all that great. when he When he was asked, Kendrick or Drake, he said Palestine. Exactly. And of course, and of course, Scott of Duke is always saying Free Palestine. so But I am here to talk about beefs. Unlikable in every other way. Yes. Love the pro-Palestine part. Yes. Hate everything else. Exactly. You you understand. yeah As I said, Scott of Duke is for the people. but um However, I'm here to speak about beefs. And in that song, there wasn't a ton of beef just making the point. How do you feel about the Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj beef? Bigfoot versus hiss. I'm all team Nicki. Are you kidding? Are you a bar? The most evil thing you could actually be. I don't know what you want me to say about this.
00:06:39
Speaker
You're, you're, you're doing, you're trying to get into, you're doing it on purpose! You're doing it on purpose! It's working! It's working! New beef happening right now. Scabadook. Salim's gonna get tortured next Halloween. Well now that I've stirred it all up, I think I should go! Scabadook, everybody. Scabadook, Scabadook. Thanks for spoiling the scene, Scabadook. How about that mask? How about that, Matt? It's got stars on it. Ow, ow, indeed. For the people. Well, not for me, my people. What's the, what? So, Celine's team Megan. Obviously. Yeah, that's what we all learned. Obviously. She's the stallion.
00:07:22
Speaker
She's, what? but She's this yeah scal what is the The stallion. Two E's. Let's, let's tarry note for that. We have guests that are are waiting to get on and whatnot. If boy beans were a magical fruit he'd be fucking Dumbledore.
00:07:38
Speaker
I'm going to talk about beans, not beef. All right. That's good combo though. Do you eat beef with beans? Is that a thing? We're opening with beans talk. Like, this is like within seconds. Yeah, I yeah presume that would be the case, to be quite honest. Hi, Oh, you came so far away, did you? Well, how far did you come? Let's hear about it. Let's hear about it. What was your travel experience? yeah um I was on plane for seven and a half hours. Nice. OK. And then I ah went to Michi's house. Nice. Then I went to Brooklyn and then drove up here at like 2.30 this morning. We got here. Nice. So it's about the same. but You know, when you talked about this, this is the four international components of Scott Punk International. Yeah, they say we're looking at Scott Punk International. We're breaking the gift, baby. We're the international.
00:08:31
Speaker
What's going on Craig? You literally were on like three months ago. Like this is like, we're just like, we're like, oh, he's here. We should bring him on stage. Podcast guest number one. No way Chris is, but. Yeah, I don't know where he went. You're actually taller. It's hard to me every time I'm on the show. You're taller than I thought you'd be. You came about how short you are. And you're like two inches shorter than me. Maybe everyone's taller in England than they are everywhere else. It's like reverse the island dwarfism. Like it's just like in reverse. French Canadians are small. You're very small. I thought you'd be taller. Okay. No beef, no beef! Bring it! We're gonna wrap that on me as well.
00:09:11
Speaker
Adam, wherever you are. Oh, there he is. So this is a beef you ain't getting already. There's too much beef happening. If this is going to be that theme... Well, let's bring it back to beans. Let's bring it back to beans. Let's bring it back to beans. Back to my first question. Does beef go with beans? No, toast mainly. Okay. Jacket potato or baked potato, I believe you call it here. Yeah. And fish fingers, anything really. Fish fingers? You don't want beans with a steak though. No, it sounds okay, though. It would be like putting mushrooms on a steak. Yeah, peppercorn sauce. Yeah, this is good content. You said you were going to talk about beans. It's like, okay. Is that why you gave me the orange microphone? Yeah, because as you say, it looks bean colored. I said it looks more like bean-stained colored. Yeah, like if you were eating beans with your hand and you grabbed a white microphone.
00:10:00
Speaker
yeah And you continue eating beans with your hand and grab your microphone again. I do like the juice that slides off a pizza when it's really greasy. And then you rub it on your shoulder. What's fun and different here so far? um I experienced on the side of a bus an advert for heart surgery because that was weird. It was like, oh, don't have that in England. Do trains have significantly less graffiti than what ours do? Do you have ads for ladies beating on other dudes and say that they are injury lawyers? No. We also don't have lots of abortion signs. That's not a thing. There's not a lot of God signs. That's not a thing. Churches here are huge. Well, fuck, never mind. Well, they are an England as well. They're much older as well. Yeah, you people love churches.
00:10:45
Speaker
Let's talk about religion. so we're eating All countries like 70% atheist. Is it really? yeah Fuck it. We just crossed 50% in Canada. no where's it here what's the what's the What's the over and under on atheism? of so What else about this country, right? If you believe in God, go God. No, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Craig, do you want to play a game? Okay. um This is like, has anybody listened to the podcast before? Yeah, we got a few. Thank you, thank you so much.
00:11:18
Speaker
So normally the podcast is

Audience Games and Banter

00:11:20
Speaker
we record for two hours and release at 90 minutes. So we have to take that entire thing and cram it into 30 minutes. So this is going to move way faster than if you actually listen to the show. 90 minutes of it is usually just means Lin railroad in the podcast, to be fair. It's like listening on 1.5. You can't, to get cider, you have to like actually go out of your way to get it. You got cider? No, but I'm just saying, let usually you'll have it by by now. um So, okay, this game is called, let's play a little gamay like Sade. A little gamay like what? Sade. Sade? this game, everyone on stage will be given clues to ascertain the identity of a band or musician whose name is commonly mispronounced. A band or musician's name... Like Connecticut, which I think should be Connecticut.
00:12:03
Speaker
And you have to identify the name and pronounce it correctly so because we have live people everybody here on stage hi people we live people yeah instead of those dead people we keep put in front of us are refreshing um You can ask the audience one time if you get stuck you can all the audience like he wants to be a million yeah like with your answers yeah correct That's from your country who wants to be a millionaire that was everywhere It is, but there you started there you missla it you have way too many game shows. We do. We love a fuckload of game shows. I like it. You know, just buzz whatever, you know, just say, oh, hi Craig. As we all know, if you've listened to me on the podcast, okay very sh... Games.
00:12:43
Speaker

People are calling it Creed. Is it all the above? Oh! A joke!
00:15:47
Speaker

You say it proudly and how do you say it? Craig. Craig. Yeah this is a show to do. This is like the worst content I've ever seen is you guys saying the same word back and forth for 20 minutes. Because I know what you expected when you asked me to come up and be honest. Katar Maestro from Scandinavia who came to the US s to make it big in the middle business and has been shredding ever since. So Lin.
00:17:35
Speaker
Selene. Timu Borgir? Timu Borgir. That's not bad. Big black metal fans in the audience. Yeah Timu Borgir. Yeah no not that one. Were they in the 80s? I think they were in the 90s. Okay. More hints. His force rose all the way through the 80s before his toxic personality overtook his abilities. ginwick mom st I mean, is correct, but that first name got what absolutely butchered in your mouth. You know how I learned dad ah how to read his name? Yeah. From a cover of Guitar World magazine, like a thousand miles north from here. Yeah. And nobody knows how to pronounce anything up there, so. Anybody want to give give his first name? Does anybody in the audience want to give this guy's first name in the world?
00:18:18
Speaker
Ingvay! Ingvay! Momstein! Ingvay! What else can it be in stuff? That's kind of close to you. That's kind of close. Kind of close. Yeah. It's like over there, right? Up a bit. Yeah, up a bit. Open Q&A Session

00:20:13
Speaker
Good boy. on the moi, that's correct.
00:20:16
Speaker
oh That's the game. Joey did it or some shit? I don't know. You weren't keeping score. because yeah yeah i thinkeline will unur is being here I was given the five minute definitely warning so that means we can question the answers. Who has a question for Craig? Who wants to come up? Come on! Give us some context Mark. Let me get some just English questions here. Thank you. Can you please take it easy on me in the next rap battle? No, I'm a terrible rapper That's all that's a no, that's a good question. Yes or no question. Who's got an open-ended question?
00:20:52
Speaker
they Something cute and funny for a Brit. Do you have a bean question England anybody fish and chips? Oh Nobody's brave. Nobody's brave for sure. I don't blame them. brave Why are you so fucking cute? Best question of mine, actually. Because we don't have sun in England, so you know, I don't tan, so I don't have that sort of like tan, leathery skin that people get. so It stops me aging faster. I'm sure. So I'm younger than what I am. do want to Where do you go on holiday? Spain. Beautiful. Yeah. Why do you have Spain so close? That's fucked up. I know. It's quicker for me to drive to Spain than it would be probably to drive through all of Texas. Or all of Canada. Did you have a question? Or all of Canada. Maybe? Oh, Robert's got a question. Here we go.
00:21:37
Speaker
How far is far to you given where you're from? Yeah. What's your question? Let's talk about far. a Far is far. Australia would be pretty far. That'd be far? That'd be the furthest. That'd be literally, this is like halfway around the world. I think Australia would be all the way around the world. Is that the longest commonwealth? Like from like distance. Commonwealth to commonwealth? Commonwealth kid. Probably. I don't know. I don't really pay much attention to it because. But more importantly, distance wise, what's far when you're at home? um Any distance that's more than two hours, so like driving, if I have to drive two hours... so Change changed last year when I came out of Andy B. And now I was like, oh, a 10 hour drive today in a straight line, cool. All right, that'll do it for our show. Thanks everybody for checking past. Andrew Joey, Slend. Crazing me on later, next to soldiers. I'll see you in the fucking pit.
00:22:45
Speaker
Welcome back to Checkered Past. It's Rob and Engineer Joey here in studio to talk about SPI Fest day one, live episode one. Pre-SPI Fest travel. Yeah. And day one. Yeah, let's so you would have just heard our live show from the Friday night, May 17th. We're recording this ah like three weeks later. ah So I think I'm blanking on the dates. But yeah, with me here is ah my co-host with the most toast engineer, Joey. You would have heard him on the episode as well. Yeah, we were there.
00:23:17
Speaker
We're there. We talked about stuff. We

Behind the Scenes Insights

00:23:20
Speaker
didn't listen to it. maybe We didn't listen to it. Um, I remember what we kind of talked about. Some guys showed up, then another guy showed up and then we did some crowd work. Yeah. most the The crowd work is a lot of, a lot of fun. Uh, people really liked your jokes. Yeah. Light house crushed. Is that the day one one, the light house? That was good. Those are so stupid. um You know what's fun about the live show? And this is like real peak behind the curtain. I love doing the live shows, so ah we'll get into it more because we have like a whole plan. We've done a whole three now. This is three, three live shows now. The second one went, and the third one both went way better than our first one. Oh, yes. A million times better. Holy smokes.
00:24:07
Speaker
um And you probably heard from it like the recording quality as much if you heard our SPIFS 2023 live episode um The recording quality was probably not up to par. It was rough. This one sounded much better. Big ups to a friend of the pod, Keelan, who lent us his interface. He lent us a multi-channel interface, so we were able to record right off the stage. And I was able to engineer on the spot. On the spot. Editing was, you said seconds were removed. It was so easy. Yep. What you hear is pretty much what went down for the most part. Yep.
00:24:45
Speaker
25 minutes on day one, 30 minutes in day two, something like that. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. But before we get into that part, because that's kind of putting the cart before the horse, we thought the way we would do this is since our episodes were only a half hour because we were part of the regular rotation of bands. That's an opening band set. So we didn't get a full hour, hour and a half, but that's fine. I don't think I had it in me. Oh my God, we would have died. I was so out of breath after even just one. People would have been walking out. Yeah, yeah. That's a lot of CPSC. Too much. Unless we were like the event, I guess, why people came, which is like, why would you? We need stools. Why would you? We would need stools. Yeah, we stood the whole time. We would need stools for that.
00:25:27
Speaker
For sure so ah so for this part of the episode to kind of counter the last half we're just gonna tell some stories talk about our our time there talk about a trip talk about the trip so basically like the way this all panned out like just to kind of cycle it all the way back is we were the opening act at spi fest 2023 so cool Chris, it was kind enough to ask us to come back to do it again in 2024. And we're like, hell yeah, we will be there. Took some, ah you know, movement, but we made it happen. Big shout out to our patron backers who were definitely a big part of the reason why we were able to afford to go in the first place. Yeah, we wouldn't have been able to make it without y'all. So it was a huge thank you that you know, the the that
00:26:11
Speaker
Patronage I guess is whatever that phrase come from is it it helps us keep the lights on and keeps all the like the day-to-day cost But we were actually able to keep a couple bucks aside to make the trip and you know, that's that's great This is how we get out to be there and and hang out with everybody and and be a part of the scene So and then lets us put out some great content like what we're gonna be able to hear um over the next few weeks, so ah But once we all got it all figured out the We had to actually get to Connecticut and that's where like things really start to get interesting. So the first thing about where we live is Edmonton, Alberta. I know we've rehashed this multiple times. We are very far north.
00:26:50
Speaker
Very far west. And very far west. ah So we're one of the most northern capital cities in the world, I think is how that works. Yep. And, you know, Edmonton's not a small town. We're a million strong. We've got a million folks. ah But we're not a hub airport. Calgary has the hub airport. And Toronto has the hub airport, at least over there. Vancouver and Montreal do as well. But um those usually are the places we need to cross over in. So, Connecticut, if for from Edmonton to Connecticut is we need to stop over once, if not twice. Because we can't even go straight to New York and then drive. No. So, what we ended up having to do is actually fly to Ottawa, yes rent a car, and drive six and a half to seven hours.
00:27:36
Speaker
to get our butts over to Connecticut. Our other option was fly to Toronto and make a similarly long drive. I think it was a half an hour or an hour longer, but it would have taken us through a whole bunch of cities or around a bunch of cities. So this way we avoided that. but Literally, no matter what we did, we were looking at 12 hours of travel, yeah whether it was in the sky, in airports, or in a car. yeah So we decided limit the amount of car limit the

Travel and Arrival in Connecticut

00:28:04
Speaker
amount of flying and maximize the amount of car, ah because the other thing too is international flying is so much more complicated than domestic flying. So just being able to stay in Canada for as long as humanly possible in the sky, yeah and then drive for as much as possible in the US. Driving across the border was no problem either way. for us that was the other thing so
00:28:23
Speaker
um but we flew we flew a budget airline whoa we flow a budget airline to get there we flew on but porter Porter Airlines in Canada. Good shit. Holy shit. Best airline I've been in since Lufthansa. Holy smokes. Like a good airline. Free drinks, two double seats, no triple seats. Yep. Free Wi-Fi. Free Wi-Fi. Yeah. And like half decent stuff on their like in-flight entertainment or whatever. I watched part of a movie and then I played Zelda most of the time, but yeah, no, it was, I was, yeah, hella impressed.
00:28:58
Speaker
don And it was there and back. It was like, worked out great. It was great. So the way that I got there, I needed to bring the gear. I needed to bring the recording gear. So I, Keelan lent us an eight channel. interface and I needed a microphone flip splitter. So I needed a two rack space things. If you know what a rack looks like, if you've ever seen like a base cabinet with that rectangular thing above it, those are rack units. So I needed a two rack unit thing and I stuffed literally all of my shit into the back of the case for that. Um, and then I made that my carry on and I would not have it go under the plane because it was gear and that's bad news. So
00:29:47
Speaker
We had to update my seat. to get me to have carry on because it was doesn't allow to carry on no budget no carry on. yeah You get under the seat or nothing and yeah everything else you pay for it. But it worked out pretty good. I managed to shove all my stuff into that teeny tiny little rack space and we flew and it was safe and it was great. It worked out. And then we rented our car in Ottawa yep and then and engineer Joey McDonald's yeah as as you do. And engineer Joey drove the entire way there and back.
00:30:20
Speaker
I did it. I'm the driver. I'm the co-host with the most miles, and I guess. Yeah, I don't know. I'm the co-hile with the most miles. I don't know if co-hile is a good word. um Yeah, I used to do a job where I drove a lot, so driving is not a big deal for me. So yeah, it was fun. Yeah, and that was our first time in the Northeast. Yeah, I gotta to say, um friends in the Northeast of the United States, too many flags, man. That's a lot of flags. Too many flags. Yeah. creepers
00:30:55
Speaker
It was a lot. It was very, it was surreal to drive through there because it looked familiar and not familiar all at the same time. Yeah. Yeah. Like I'd driven through country that seemed, that looked like that before, but also, um, because it's so old and the area has been settled for so long, it's just like a weird string of people live in places. So many houses. So many houses all over the place where like in Canada, you could drive through a similar area, but there'll be like, like villages or whatever, you know, there'll be five or 10 houses. And then every few miles or kilometers, there might be a house down the highway. This was like,
00:31:35
Speaker
It was crazy. Chock-a-block. Chock-a-block. Yeah, you couldn't go anywhere without hitting some ancient house. They're all 250, 300-year-old houses. Yeah. We were driving like, oh, there'll be a bathroom at this place. That seems like it's a town on the nav, on the rental car or whatever, but it was just town after town after town after town. It was wild. Never seen nothing like it before. And there was so much dairy. We talked about that on the pod. We talked about that and realized that we drove through the milk belt. belt yeah So much ice cream. I didn't need any. I will say though, there's a lot of lot of um freeways.
00:32:12
Speaker
Yeah, like basically as soon as we left New York State, like we were on interstates all the way through Massachusetts and into Connecticut. Like we but i we barely saw Massachusetts. We like yeah right. that like We went we went through a corner of Massachusetts via the interstate. The interstate just whipped us right through it. Yeah. um But the interstates are sweet. That's a cool system. Like I will say like for the even though they're private, which is kind of stupid. And also, fucking I did not like They were really confusing to get on and off of. Yeah. So, and I, I saw some people tell me that I'm most good at some issues. And I was like, I agree with you guys is fucked up because, because it's just like Frankenstein over years and years and years. Like it's just either, you know it or you don't. And Google maps is only so much help. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So we got turned around a couple of times, but.
00:33:07
Speaker
but Not too bad. Not too bad. We got to where we needed to go. And we stayed in Connecticut. We stayed in West Hartford and the show was in Windsor. Yep. I believe that's what it was. We were at this like Airbnb that was like triple unit, like three-story building. Old. Old as all hell smelt like an old building. yeah They had old buildings. The building that we stayed in for Airbnb was likely built around the same time as the oldest hoses in Edmonton. I would Oh yeah. I would hazard a guess. Yeah. For sure. Lots of hardwood. It was a cute. It was cute. It was cool. It was fine. Yeah. It was very, very bare bones. Very bare bones. There was a lot going on there. Not a lot. And there's a few things that we learned too like in that. Oh yeah. Right. When we first showed up. When we first showed up.
00:33:54
Speaker
ah because we had just driven all day through a state where you can get beer or liquor literally anywhere, seemingly. like any like It seemed like there was as many- In New York State. Yeah, in New York State. It seemed like there was as many driveways with a sign that said like eggs for sale as there were places to purchase beer from. Yeah. Like there was so many of them. And then we got to connecticut Connecticut. Connecticut. And Arianne and I went down to the corner store ah and there was no beer. We were like, hey, where can we get some beer? And the guy was like, ah you're not going to find any beer at 10 o'clock on a Thursday.
00:34:40
Speaker
And we were like, excuse me? yeah And he was like, maybe like like, if you find a bar around here that's open, and it was like 1030 or something like that, we were like, what do you mean that that's open? and So yeah. What do you mean that's open? Yeah, like bars are open late, and that's where you get beer. Like, what the fuck? And then, yeah, same with wheat, I guess. So real, like, dry, like bordering dry county laws, like yeah real, like, and then it's something like they all shut down at six on Sundays. Yeah, fired procuring alcohol was way more of a challenge than we... ah We're beer drinkers. Like I'd say, me and Arianne specifically, we're beer drinkers. And Celine and I are the weed smokers. And so finding and procuring our our vices was important. yeah
00:35:27
Speaker
Which we did the next day. We went to a very cool beer store that had all kinds of. Oh, yeah, that was fast beers that was nifty little dogs. ah That guy was amped up. Yeah. The guy who owned that place was like super like on it. He was trying to get you to come to that wine thing. He really wanted me to get to these, like, he was hard. And I was like, I'm not here for this. Like, yeah, we're here for Scott. We're here for, yeah. But he had cool ass dogs. Yeah. yeah little frenchy And then we went to a very nice dispensary thing. I don't know if that's what they call them there. Weed store. Uh, and bought some very expensive weed, but it was good. It was like and space age.
00:36:04
Speaker
Like it was really fancy. Oh yeah. It was very fancy. They, they make it like a very fancy thing here in Canada. You just like go into the cheap weed store and you're like, I'm going to buy an ounce of weed for a hundred Canadian dollars there. It's like, come into here, give us your ID. Uh, are you here for a medical reason or just at a recreational reason? Okay. Well go through the door there. Let them know you're here to pay the high prices and not the low prices. Uh, and then pick your stuff. And then you look at the stuff and you're like, that's
00:36:35
Speaker
That's literally an eighth of the amount of weed that I get for a hundred dollars for 55 American dollars. And it was wild, but hey, it was good. It was better than being in a place where we can smoke weed, right? Which was last year's yeah issue. yeah was So weed was easy to come by. Yep. It was great. um Yeah, like it was. ah So, yeah, the next day that was kind of we just woke up. We had like we got some breakfast somewhere and just kind of like a little quick running around. And then when we had bagels. Yeah, we grabbed some. No, that was the second second. Yeah. Yeah. OK, so we'll say the bagel because bagels are dope. Yeah.
00:37:12
Speaker
um Yeah, and then we head on over to the venue. We had to get set up pretty quick. Oh, the fucking, yeah, because they're fucking Uber driver. We got declined by our Uber driver. Motherfucker. Motherfucker showed up and we just- In too nice of a car. In a, what was it? Like a beamer? Yeah, some sort of or Mercedes, a really a really nice new luxury car. He showed up, indicated that there were four of us. He shows up, rolls his window down and says, not four. Nobody in my front seat.
00:37:46
Speaker
And we're just like, what? Like, can you just, fuck as I was like, literally says two to four people on this thing. Like, you can you just say no? Like, is that a thing? So apparently they can just show up and be like, I don't feel like it. And then fucking booked out. yeah And I was furious. Yeah, I was not stoked about that situation. So we had ah so we had to order like a full van because we didn't want to dick around with that. like I didn't want the next guy to show up and like say... Then people were saying later, they were just like, Uber drivers around here suck. ah like yeah People were saying like, yeah.
00:38:21
Speaker
And so it is what it is. We don't really have lift in Canada. So that was kind of off the table Yeah, we were already uber was already on our credit cards and shit. It was these we were Honestly, we didn't have too much of a trouble paying for stuff. I feel like like I figured out this time this time we got Receiving money and paying money was way better than last year. Last year we over and anticipated how much cash we needed to spend. ah Now we realize that not only is everything finally contactless here in, or here, there in the US, like it is here in Canada, but it also is like seamless between me using my Canadian cards for shit. So that was also nice. I did still have a gross damp.
00:39:05
Speaker
Handful of stupid I got a paper fucking money in my pocket I got a pile cuz we made a float cuz we didn't know what people were gonna need cuz we were selling shirts and stuff But yeah, yeah, my two complaints too many flags get some damn polymer money. Yeah, man Get on the out You got tap get tap now you got you actually next step skip the polymer money. Just get rid of currency. Yeah, I You're your penny. It's all made up anyway. You gotta catch up to us on that. Oh yeah, no penny. Get rid of that thing. That's useless. Fuck, we're just about ready to get rid of our nickel. Yeah, I'm ready to get rid of the nickel. Everything on the 10? It's got a beaver on it though.
00:39:46
Speaker
currency we talked about currency we got anything more to say about that i don't think um so we get there and we had to kind of race to like get our shit together yeah we i had a pretty good idea of how to uh plug everything in but also it was just uh we realized that we didn't have all the cords that we quite needed and all that kind of stuff so uh big ups to erin from power up for hooking us up with all the right cables and everything who was the stage manager for SDI Fest as Aaron from Power Up. rush Crushed the shit out of it. It's such a fantastic job. Oh yeah, and and also hooked me up with... um
00:40:22
Speaker
Uh, stuff because I played in a band I played with take today on the first day as well. That's true. Uh, so also thank you, Darren, for letting me, all of your guitar stuff and Joe. And good so so, and then it was a little bit later we're going back. Yeah. Cause we were going back and forth a little bit to get the show set up with the sound guy and with Aaron and. It just took a minute and then we also had, as you heard, we had some people who were going to do like walk-on stuff. yeah And so we had to make sure they were ready. um There's a very distinct visual component to the Scuba Duke showing up that
00:40:58
Speaker
Like if you're on Twitter at all, you'll have seen pictures or you'll have seen ah David ah who who's done art for us. Yes. Did a picture of the Scuba Duke. like Incredible. Pretty fucking awesome. Craig came on and was the powerhouse and was our like Prime guest for that and we did games and stuff, but it was ah it was a whole thing um And then yeah

Festival Highlights

00:41:22
Speaker
fine. We were five minutes late to start the show So that's why the episode is just a smidge shorter, but I'm pretty good at keeping on top of ah time and stuff and we are in on it was really good at like also giving me a five-minute warning when I needed it and yeah We were we were smoking and it was it was awesome. It was a lot of fun It's a lot of fun to get the like the crowd energy and stuff
00:41:43
Speaker
Have, have patrons have, uh, people who talk to us in the discord on a weekly basis, like yammering at us right from the crowd. It was great. Like, I think that was, so that was, that we had what, maybe 50 ish people there. Like, yeah, something like that that. The first day. Yeah. Yeah. On first day. Cause we're like, it was early. It was like one o'clock. Yeah. And it was a Friday. It was a Friday. yeah So that one, it was a little bit less than on day two, day two, there was more people for sure. Cause it was Saturday. Yeah. But it's still like 50 people, like the whole show would would get up to like 300 or something. And that was way more than in the day and ah last year, like 2023. Yeah, I would say more I would say there was maybe 25 or so. Yeah. For the first year.
00:42:27
Speaker
And so it was really cool to have so many people show up. And yeah, they were super engaged. It was like, yeah, I was thrilled. I had just so much fun. Day one in particular, because day two was more of a Celine episode for sure. But day one, I had so much fun. And I was super energized when I came off too. We're selling in shirts we had some shirts with some stickers yeah the one thing about the whole festival is that we had a run of yummy on more scholarships that we brought with us and dish and some ah ah reworks of our spi fest tour sure even more limited where an screen printed a second date on it she wrote second date added and it's a year later.
00:43:11
Speaker
and Then we had a third date added after the second date was added. That was the other thing too. like Originally, we were only supposed to do the Friday, but then Call Me Malcolm was supposed to be on the bill and they had something happen or they couldn't come in. so Chris asked us to open the third the the next day as well. We were like, I only had one episode written, but I was like, I'm pretty sure I can throw a second episode together. They're actually really easy. Like the live episodes are really easy to throw together because there's not, we're not doing band research. So it's actually not too bad. It's just have an idea, run with it. Um, in terms of prep, it was not too bad. And so that was kind of good. Plus we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted to do on the next day. yeah And that kind of ended up working out. And because of the way the first year had worked out, we had a pretty good idea of like what works in a live show. Yeah.
00:44:02
Speaker
And so then after we got off stage, then, you know, we did a little bit of merch things, but we were just like kind of paling around with people. There's a lot of folks that were like in bands that we knew, checker heads, patrons. Like it was, it was awesome to just go out and talk with everybody. And then some, lots of hugs. And then the band started playing and, oh, that was the other thing about the venue. So the venue is unnamed and it says ice cream on the side of it. um And it was, ah it was a kind of a cool venue. It was like two floors. Like the second, there was like a balcony section that they were using as like a an artist only kind of section. And then the the bottom i was where the stage was, although it was kind of around this big pillar that was kind of ah obnoxious, in it but that's what,
00:44:49
Speaker
held up the balcony. So it was pretty necessary. And there was no bar. It was like, it's an all ages venue. So there's no like, um, they haven't done anything with liquor licenses. Uh, so we had a, if we wanted to drink or whatever, we had to go offsite and then, um, we made that work. Not necessarily legally, but we figured it out. A lot of, a lot of side of the garbage cans, fire escapes, you know, just general punk rock life really took me back to being 20 years old again. Not the first time, not the last time. No, probably not. I think some people were a little bit more irritated that that was the case, but I was like, I'm okay to run out to the back. You know who it didn't bother? You. Common sense kid. No, no, he figured it out. He figured it out pretty well. He figured it out pretty well.
00:45:35
Speaker
Um, so the bands that played, so I'm never going to get this band's name correct. I thought it was pronounced soldiers, but it's like soldiers or something like that. Okay. Uh, that was the band that came on right after us. Yep. They were great. They were great. They were like probably the chillest band on the both yeah bills, more of a reggae band, more of a reggae band. Uh, pretty tight though. And they're really they were really tight. and Their keys player was really good. Yeah. yeah Um, well, I mean, they they were a really tight band in general, but I remember the keys sticking out to me. We did our best to try to catch like every band. um We had to obviously- You gotta eat at some point, so you have to skip one band per per day. yeah I'm gonna say I absolutely fucked up day one, um but that's fine. Day two, I don't think I fucked up. Day two, I think I made the right call. I managed to see every band by eating midway through. I watched the beginning of a band, went and ate something and came in midway through the next band.
00:46:32
Speaker
That's not the worst way of doing it. Yeah. But it was easier this year too because there was literally the first day there was like a delicious barbecue truck. Oh yeah. Literally like parked against the wall of the venue. And then the next day it was a hot dog guy. Yeah. So I didn't eat a ton, but I did manage to eat. That was what ended up happening. It was right there. It was really tasty. agoina So all the bands played for only 30 minutes. 30 minutes sets, 15 minute turnovers, or 10 even minute turnovers. So we moved real fast. Agonizers were on next. They were local to Connecticut. They're like a ska punk, street punk kind of situation. They had the table right next to us. So they were trying to give us some Connecticut pointers of stuff to do around the area. And they did. And they did. They gave us a few thoughts. We didn't do any of them. We tried.
00:47:21
Speaker
We didn't, we weren't successful. Bad Mary played. They were really fun. They're like a power pop punk situation. Very New York. Very New York. They're like good friends with Megan Finity. They, they're pretty, we ended up, actually you'll hear it on the third episode because I ended up doing a back alley with them. Really cool people too. Super fun. They have like a web show. Yeah, think I think I twitch twitch twitch stream ah thing and they both do mics and the old video games and such vintage video game guy. Yeah. But they put on a really great show. Yeah, they were super fun. Yeah, there was something like it's like the two of them are a couple and then her dad her dad and then their music teacher. Oh, is that yeah. Okay. The guy from England I think is their music teacher. Yeah.
00:48:12
Speaker
So it's like, uh, like they're really tight knit, like it's very, very cool, but they, they, they were, they rocked. They were really good. ah She, Amanda has six stage moves. Oh yeah. Like like super right on there was a couple of moves that I was like taking notes in my head, being like, I gotta tell the singer of my cover band about these moves. It was so good. That's such a good stage move to do. Hell yeah. Was that the like the push up? Yeah, put pumping, pushing, pumping iron with like holding the mic stand with like a round base as if it's a big dumbbell. but Yeah. And like lifting it like a power lifter. It was just such a power move. I was like, that's a good stage move. Yeah. Yeah, they were super fun. And then take today. That was that was you. Yeah, I played. ah Joe messaged me about a week and a half before the show.
00:49:10
Speaker
and said, Hey, do you want to play with us? Cause they're currently a three piece band, but they're usually have two guitars. Um, I was like, well, let me listen to the stuff and see how feasible it is for me to learn in that amount of time. And I did. And I was like, fuck yeah, let's do it. So I learned that shit and I played, it was super fun. Uh, it was really hot and sweaty. Um, I was dressed like a member of take today. So I was wearing a black t-shirt. Um, and then we found out after we played, uh, that the heat was on in the building and just turned it off after we played. So, and it was like the weather in Connecticut was pretty hot. It was pretty muggy. It was pretty muggy. Yeah. it Like 20 some degrees. Yeah. Yeah. But, uh, but yeah, the set went great. It was fun. It was awesome. It was a hell of a lot of fun to go someplace and play music. I'd never done that before. That's the furthest I've ever been like from home and playing music.
00:50:07
Speaker
and they're a joy Z band. And I remember Joe was like, I wish ah Joey lived closer to us. Yeah, we've, we've, we've mentioned that a few times. Like if I lived within the distance to be in that band, I would probably just be in that band. And you can go the distance. Go for speed. Go for speed. Yeah. And that that was great. And then yeah, it was, ah it was a lot. And again, thanks Aaron for lending me your amp and such and Joe for and the Take Today boys for having me play. It was a hell of a lot of fun. I'm not sure I have the exact correct lineup now that I'm looking at it. Yeah, I think things got scooted around. They did get changed around, so I might have had the timing wrong, but Craig was on. Yep. Fucking crushed it. Honestly, it's so good. Techno party was insane.
00:50:59
Speaker
Yeah, went that went ballistic. People lost it when that song came on. just like yeah i And Craig's show is... is ah here like He says before it's like shit karaoke, he calls it. ah he ah He mentions in the live thing that he's ah Andy Beer. so Somebody commented that they enjoyed his is is music and stand-up comedy routine.
00:51:27
Speaker
Um, he, uh, yeah, he, he definitely has a lot of stage presence. He's a, he's nervous and he always says, so he closes his eyes, but you can't tell cause he's always like jumping around and he, he has his melodica that he plays and he's got his little like keyboard set up to play some songs. And when he's in rap mode, he looks really bad-ass. Yeah. Yeah. Really, really good. Uh, watching common sense kid is a lot of fun. And then slim went up. And did and brought the host down with him doing her song in this featuring common sense kid. ah And that slayed as well. Yeah, that was definitely a highlight of day one for sure. Yeah, that was killer. um ah Yeah, and Slinn had a blast, too. So like we all of us were on stage at some point. Oh, yeah. yeah that Oh, yeah. Yeah. That was kind of fun. Who else do we have on day one? We had Bond Breaker.
00:52:23
Speaker
so fucking sick. So Bond Breaker I think was like I knew they were gonna be good so Hans Gruber talks about Bond Breaker all the time. Yep. They may be one of the on on paper they're the most out of place band because they are like a metal band basically. Yeah. Like really they're like legit metal guys. Yeah they're they' kind of singer thrash almost I would say or something in that vein sort of but yeah it's Not what you would expect yeah and their lead singer ah is is like super badass black girl who like throws on like war paint and like fucking just like goes for it like like incredible so intense so intense and it's not like
00:53:04
Speaker
Singing it's like like fucking primal screaming like it's like Outrageously good like fucking awesome. Yeah, what a goddamn sick a highlight of the fest in my opinion It was catching them because I was like, whoa, holy shit. They had bongs, too Yeah, right bong breaker breaker. Yeah, and I someone came up to me and was like you'll have to break it to Joey They sold out of the bongs That's okay. ah The marijuana brass got one. But Bond Breaker will be coming to Edmonton. And we're going to go see them we at again. We'll not miss a a show. And so... And you might even hear us trying to get them to do the show. That would be great. Yeah. um Plastic Prez.
00:53:46
Speaker
Oh, was the fucking, I'm wearing a shirt? Yeah. plastic prayers power ah This was the like superior to their show from like last year was great. They fucking ripped last year. This year they sounded so fucking good. Drummers so goddamn tight. They're just such a ripping, fast, fucking angry, fun, Scott punk band. Yeah. I love them. And we were talking about how like the record that they released is good. um But you know, you talk to Earl and and and them and they're just like an Earl's what was like ran shop at that at the fest like he was in every pit like Oh, yeah, like just the wildest energy. Yeah, so so Arianne said it's all that clean living
00:54:30
Speaker
Straight edge lifestyle because that energy gives him all that energy. It's all that clean living. um And ah yeah, and i like, he was always like, Oh, yeah, but wait till you hear our next stuff. Like it's good. And they played some new stuff all on stage and I'm just like, Holy fuck, the next fucking way, the next plastic prez is going to kill. It's going to be so good. It's going to rip so hard. ah So I, um, this is jumping ahead to day two, but it doesn't really matter. Um, so day two, I bought all my merch because I need, I, I packed few shirts so that I would have to buy shirts to be able to make it home with shirts. Um, and I went to the plastic president's, uh, merch and I think it was their own that sold it solely thing. And they have a, like a Barbie movie logo, right? Right. That's why I want the Barbie movie logo shirt. And, uh, earlier in the day.
00:55:22
Speaker
Cool Chris had told me because they have a shirt with his dumb face on it. He's like, they sold so many of these shirts with my dumb face on it. And I was like, I'm going to get the shirt without Cool Chris's dumb face on it. I want the other one. So I asked for the Barbie movie one and I didn't unroll it till I got home. And then I got home and it's the one with Chris's dumb face on it. So you got it anyway. Got it anyway. And it's okay. I'm happy with it. Uh, runaway ricochet. That was one I missed. That's when I went out to eat. Oh boy, you fucked up. And I fucked up. I was reminded many times that I fucked up, which is stupid because of that record. So good. And I knew it was good, but I was so hungry. That was so hungry. And then I just walked in and I see people's faces like, like they're just like, they just saw the most incredible show. And I'm like, fuck.
00:56:10
Speaker
course of course they rip just like uh simple-minded symphony last year was the same thing or it was like just this like crazy tight like progressive ska band so fucking good yeah they yeah the everything about it. At one point, I think near the end of the set, Sax was like, do you want to hear this song or the song with the guitar solo? And everyone was like, guitar solo looks so loud. yeah And then I think they ended up having enough time to play both songs, so it fucking worked out. It was great. It was so sick. What a fucking incredibly tight
00:56:51
Speaker
incredibly complex band to watch play effortlessly. yeah like it's It's a treat to watch musicians of that caliber play and like have such a good time and like make it seem like it's nothing. Fuck yeah. Yeah, so good.

Memorable Performance Moments

00:57:07
Speaker
Skag was on after that. This is the part of the night when I start to have drank too much. um that because i'm i'm already like I'm looking at this and I was like, that was when things took a different turn. uh so they handed out swords they handed out swords yeah light up like the cheapest expandable like fairground light up sword that you can get uh they handed out a bunch of them and craig was standing beside me and he was like
00:57:40
Speaker
And he like whipped the sword out and the entire thing exploded. I broke a couple of other people's swords by accident constantly, like just trying to be fun and it it wasn't working. Oh, also by ah backtracking a little bit. So Maxie Scott taxi, our friend Maxie Scott taxi was ah not able to be there in reality. but was able to be there in cardboard cutout form. right And I believe during the ah runaway Ricky set, ah went for us a stage dive and was crowd surfing around a bit, at which point ah their spine got broken and they became very floppy. So at some point during the Sergeant Skagg set, I took one of the exploded lightsabers and I taped it to his back

Give him spinal surgery. Yeah, spinal surgery during the Sergeant Skaggs set. It was ah pretty fun. And Maxi partied the rest of the weekend. Uh, yeah, this, this gangster was fun. Like for like that band is, is really good. Like ah the Hans Gruber always like show to them out constantly. They did a split with them, but that new record was a lot of fun. Dripping with charisma. Yeah, absolutely. all of All of them, just everyone on stage as they're playing is just like.

fucking looking like they're the coolest people playing ska music for some reason and like they've been making ska for like in connecticut for like 30 years you know at that point they're like probably the most like except for spring heel jack like they're probably like the most like active connecticut ska band like or the most like legendary like they get brought up so much like a legacy and the earned yeah honestly like they're cool yeah it was awesome it was fucking yeah and then power up hit the stage oh boy oh my god power up holy shit oh boy took the house down that was fucking unreal
00:59:48

Like Power Up was one of my absolute favorite shows there. Like Arianne also puts that on one of her like top performances of the night. She's like fucking Power Up. We are awesome. Yes. 100%. They played a refused cover. Yeah. And Celine was losing her shit like. on par with actually seeing the refused to play it when we saw them. That's really funny because there's a big sign at the, that says no, no covers no covers and, but they, uh, CT Scott, Gary, uh, who helped like put the show on, he ah got a blanket license so they could play covers. yeah but they still had like these like no covers only original music everywhere but there were covers all both night like so many covers and you would see people just like point to the sign and they would be like still playing covers oh by this point i believe craig was chugging cans of be of beans on stage right is this ah this must have been during bean town yeah had to have been where just like there was somebody had bought a bunch of beans and put a flat upstairs 24 Yeah. And so Craig decided he's just going to cold, cold cock these, ah these cans of beans, just like blue cans. is while scanning them there There's pictures. There's pictures. Yeah. Do you know what? I'll say this about SBI Fest. There's pictures Joe from take today. Yeah. It's definitely has a real good picture of, of Craig chugging a can of beans for sure.

Uh, and then the finale was Hans Gruber. They were the headliner killed it again, killed it again. God damn, that is a good band. They're just so fun to watch. Yeah. And especially with an expanded horn section, yeah not just for eternal beach ball. Cause by this point, the marijuana brass. the The elements of the marijuana brass were jumping on stage for just about every set yeah at that point. Yeah, our our our good friend Javi was like boning on any song. Yeah, on almost every song that was happening.
01:01:53

Um, but yeah, I mean, they're always, they always, the last year they were like the standout and then this year they were like another incredible band on a big batch of incredible bands. Like it was like, and they got the, they got the headlining show that they deserve because that S for, as far as SPI is concerned, they're like one of the biggest bands. You know what I mean? Yeah. That's, it was fucking. the The way the lineup went, day one, like couldn't have been better. Yeah, honestly. it was And Kurt and curtain Rosie are pals. like We, and Chris, like we hang out with them all the time. like Every time. They come in like- Am I in danger? Yeah. You love them all.

Yeah, I don't, I don't talk to them nearly as much. I didn't talk to Mike a whole bunch though. Yeah. I was actually, also bonus group, bonus group. I talked, cause I called him that last year and I i kept, I was like, yeah, bonus group. And I would talk to him a whole lot. Actually it was on, it was day two, but, um, but yeah, like, I don't know that, that, that band has been huge supporters of ours early on. yeah They still have probably one of our most popular episodes of all time. Uh, and they talk about it still. And like, it's, uh, And they're just fun, wonderful people to hang out with. Just so cool. And there was big plans to have an after party because it was about 10 30 when everybody rolled out. Big plans to have an after party. People were like, no, there's another day. yeah Everyone's scattered to the winds. yeah Some people went to a diner I heard. ah So there was like not quite an after party, but there was a little bit of an after thing where people got food.

So instead we went back and we just ate a lot of Taco Bell. Yeah. Hell yeah. We got Taco Bell in the Uber. That was sick. American Taco Bell. American Taco Bell was delicious. Yeah. i I ate the shit out of that. and I fucking very much needed it. Yeah. Yeah. ah yeah day Day one, Rob was a little on the tipsy side. Day two, I kept it together. I never went over the the line but I felt on day one that I was pushing it a little bit and then yeah I had to like party. in I was partying. ah been a good time ah That was uh yeah that was kind of like half first half of SBI Fez. What else did I miss anything? I'm sure there's all kinds of little moments and and things that I but I think that's just what happened the for the first
01:04:07

Oh double engine Yeah, double engineer like a lot of credits. Just get around Scott associate producer is Chris Reeves who obviously put on the SPI festival as well We and we love him so much. We hugged him lots and We love Chris. We didn't talk about Chris at all. We'll talk about him. I didn't see that much of him. He was busy. Yeah, he's busy. The Scobadook did show up, but Chris said he didn't see him. He missed it again. He missed it again. He was missing the Scobadook. So until next time, I'm Rob. I'm Joey. In the immortal words of Common Sense Kit, what did you say he said on stage? That was a good one. I was trying to keep it in my head. He said something. Oh, it was about the standup comedy thing.
