What up checker heads welcome to checkered past this god cast of salin and rob the show where uh bret's band is poison poison and uh lyska mentalisa fucking frank explore the between impact of a different band each episode and hope to bring in new fans along the way i'm saxel rob and this is my sister and co-host the smoky bitch salin so what was your joke because you're like that okay those are bands that are covered by real big fish. Real big fish, yeah. What was the first boy band one though? Well, Poison is. What were the two theories to mine two things? Brett's band is Poison. Yeah, Brett's band. Yeah, but you said it in the like... um Poison, like the song. Like the song. But you said it in like the melody of like a 90s song. like no Of Bill Biff to both Poison. Poison. Poison. song, yeah.
00:01:48
Speaker
that and I'm yeah that one. Yeah, so what does that have to do with anything? Those are all things named poison, okay? yes yeah We got around was the second we got there Lisa Frank fucking Frank, but what was always Liza Minnelli and I really tried to lean in on it It was pretty tough. Do they do a Liza song? Oh Oh yeah. Okay. Oh yeah. Okay, I'm here now. And you'll be, you'll be surprised to know which one it is. Cabaret. Yeah. life view which one is it and youll And you'll be surprised which one it is.
00:02:36
Speaker
Alright, should we pick it up where we left off? Am I here? I don't think we announced Joey. Wait a second. We co-hosted the most toast, little Joey Christmas. Hey, I'm here. Everyone hi. I got so into what we were talking about. So into what we were talking about. I forgot about the guy who likes all the toast. Yeah, don't forget about me.
00:02:59
Speaker
Don't you forget about me. Surprisingly, not on this list of songs. Not on this bracket. It's a song and yet it's not here. but Very surprising. Why isn't it on this bracket? because they'll cover it Oh really? Yeah, which is also very surprising. I just assumed they did. Right? Yeah, right. anyway I really did. that was anyway That was my joke. Are you playing the song, Joey? Oh, yeah.
00:03:26
Speaker
It's a heptember miracle because we went to see No Effects last last night.

Concert and Festival Experiences

00:03:32
Speaker
Yes. That is last heptember. We saw the bracket winner and bracket closer uppers. At least two closer uppers. At least two closer uppers. They played like five ska songs. They played a significant. It it was ah it was a ska heavy No Effects set. We broke down the bracket and they had to repair the bracket. Literally.
00:03:53
Speaker
yeah literally literally everyone was going crazy people were being way it was woodstock 99 let's let's start from the top okay so this was so no effects on their last two or this is punk and drublich which is their craft beer festival in edmonton they're doing it two days in a row saturday sunday uh so i got there uber early because i wanted to hit up the craft beer festival because that's my jam and it was noon to three It was noon to three. Free beer. I was there. I was in the craft beer area for almost two full hours. Like it was so busy. Wow. Like you're waiting in line at least five to 10 minutes between beers. Like you get this little like shot glass of of beer. They give you 10 tickets. I got through all of them. Pretty happy I did.
00:04:35
Speaker
Yeah, completely missed the real sickies local band real sickies who are the opener and from the sounds of it They're being pretty mid. Yeah, I was just like, oh no that you'll have thirty thousand other opportunities for For those who don't know the real sickies are Ramones core they are fine. There's they're good. They're very good But they open up for everything and and also if you've listened to this podcast, you know None of us are like super into Ramones course. There's nothing wrong with them. It's good. That's fine no no it's Listen, I don't open for fucking no effects on their last tour. Like, Jesus Christ. They're doing not too bad. Yeah. Yeah. And they're good dudes, for the most part. so as far as As far as I can throw them. Yeah. ah But Get Dead played next. I saw them. Yeah. Pretty doodly? Pretty doodly. Rob Sensolin wouldn't like it. Yeah. No, there's a lot of dude energy. I did. They were one of the bands I would have liked to see, but I showed up a little later. Yeah.
00:05:29
Speaker
But they were fine. The third band was the Real MacKenzie's. Honestly, best Real MacKenzie's set I've ever seen. They did really good. They were awesome. i I heard it. That's how when we entered. Yeah. And and again, for those not local to Canada, ah the Real MacKenzie's are basically just our dropkick Murphy's.
00:05:48
Speaker
Yeah, except Scottish, because Canada were Scottish. yeah <unk>s no i Not as much Irish, all Scottish. Yeah, but if you bc if you walked into the show, if you walked into a show, you'd be like, is this the Dropkick Murphy's? They sound like pretty pretty much the same.
00:06:03
Speaker
Yeah, they got bagpipes. Yeah, they got bagpipes. And they're all naked. They all wear kilts. That's the fun part. And it's like mid-tempo, like drinking punk, like, yeah. Big time. Yeah, not a lot of skate thrashers on those ones. No. Our friends, the Rad Dads were there. Fellow Edmonton podcasters, the Rad Dads who interview punkers. They're being super cool. And then we saw adolescents.
00:06:28
Speaker
That was a game changer. We showed up to make sure we were there in time. for We were really close. I got a really good view of them. That was nice. Yeah, they fuck actually see them. Yeah, they like yeah crushed it, like crushed it, crushed it. Those old guys can rock. Yeah. yeah And they brought the same angst, brought a similar angst, I feel like, to when the songs were written.
00:06:52
Speaker
Yeah, you yeah they they had a really good, like all the bands that we saw, except for maybe one, had a stage presence that was like really like their own, like yeah the adolescence really like I don't know I'd never seen them before but when I saw them I was like this makes sense and I'd seen Keith Morris be in bands before and I was like this circle jerks set like they're doing their thing you know and then no effects was just like bits and bits and bits which is again they're just doing their thing You were rushing through it. Rob was going in order. Circle jerks were next. Yeah. And that and I think we talked about how that's not really circle. I think that might be just off. Yeah. Playing circle jerk songs. But it was sweet to hear the songs. They played all the songs. Never hurts. Honestly. They played a lot of the hits too. They played a lot of the like people. They opened with deny everything. Like they're like. They were playing the crap. And then at the end they were like these are our last six songs and they're all 20 second songs. It was fast also. But I wasn't mad.
00:07:53
Speaker
It was good. It's a good state. Yeah. Yeah. And then the interrupters came on stage and, you know, I'm going to say, okay, so here's me parsing out our thoughts on the interrupters. Fucking they brought the house down. Like that wasn't people like tons of interruptions. Yeah. People were stoked.
00:08:13
Speaker
And they were dynamic on stage and they were like, you know, playing really well. I could only kind of hear everyone was singing along to all their songs. Like, you know, they didn't really play a lot of the songs like they played She's Kerosene. and and Yeah, they didn't play a lot of the hit hits. They played two good ones.
00:08:31
Speaker
Yeah. And like we said before, like realistically, the first time we saw them with with less than Jake and the best time we saw them. That flu ourine yeah was incredible. That was such a good show. And at that time they were just freshly signed. That was their first record. Right. So.
00:08:47
Speaker
this time they were rock stars like they're rock stars yeah they're they're a huge deal like i guess i don't i knew that but then you go to the show and then you see everybody just pumped yeah people like i can't take it i'm not i don't want to take anything away from that that was my biggest lesson so there's nothing to take away from that people were really really into it before the interruptors i was really hungry and i had to get in line to get some food So I got in line and I waited from this gigantic, super duper, super so long hour, long line to get a hot dog. And I was about like eight or 10 people from the end. And then our friend that was there started like barfing and not having a great time. Uh, so I, I hung out with him and he was not great. So during the interrupt this is Yes. Okay. And but I was off with our friend, Jen, by this point, the band had started. Uh, so I took him to the med tent.
00:09:43
Speaker
medical people came and he went to the med tent and he's all good. He just had over imbibed and it was a hot day in the middle of a parking lot for hours and hours. It's he's all good. ah But yeah, then I was still hungry. So I returned to the massive lines and I stood in line until the two songs into no effects before I got food. So that's what I did during the interrupters. I stood in line, dealt with someone barfing, stood in line some more. And he went to the end and got taken care of at the meeting time. Yeah. Yeah. And then stood in line some more and ate a burger. Upset his wife. I tried to hit the skank pit at interrupters. Was it crazy? But once again, fucking Edmonton does not know how to skank. No. Just moshing. It was thick. I couldn't get closer if I wanted to.
00:10:30
Speaker
yeah it was i mean i didn't get there soon enough i would have no effects there early and then ah by no effect by the time no effects came in though the like me and joey tried to muscle our way into yeah i i was only able to get up as far as you guys but i will say though where we got up to was just to the side of like the sound booth and We can see the guys. You can see them and it sounded good. It sounded really good. That and i sounded really good. And honestly, I've been in enough shows where I'm standing up at the front and I can't hear a fucking thing. So ah whatever. I'm not going to I'm not going to fight my way away from a place that in the sun. This the lineups for food were too long. too
00:11:09
Speaker
There's nowhere to sit. There's not much shame. Nowhere to cool down. I guess there was sections where miners were and miners weren't, and then there was anarchy, and then there was just smoking, drinking, and children everywhere, which is fine, I guess. But it was a little anarchy. The police that were there just seemed to be giggling and having a silly time. Yeah. They seemed to just think it was a silly time. Yeah.
00:11:38
Speaker
But Novak's ripped. Novak's did ah actually so good. Best set I've ever seen them play. Best set I've ever seen them play. I didn't think I'd see it in the end and I stayed till the end. And it was really magical for me that Karina from the Dancehall Crashers was the keyboardist. Yeah. And doing the two or three lady singing parts. Yeah. Yeah. And like she's easily one of my like ska heroes. So that was like, you know, I know I'm never going to see the Dancehall Crashers. Right. So that was like Extra special I think just to add on to it as the best no-effect show I ever saw they played so many hits so many great songs at least like five Scott songs Like you said including all out of eggs the winner and got to see her pull a on stage What more could I ask and they were done before 10? And hell yeah, I got to go home eat chicken wings and fall asleep and we had just there whistle there was a barrier failure up front and Yeah, which basically ate up their um the break time in between their ah like oncore and stuff time So they just being the pros that they were they just did bits the entire time it took to fix the fix the barricade and
00:12:47
Speaker
Then they played Straight Edge because it was a chill song, and they figured people wouldn't mosh to it, which went off pretty well. And then they just, at the end of their set, they were like, we're supposed to do an encore thing here, but we're just going to keep going because that ate up the time. And it was awesome. It was like, I appreciate that, you know?
00:13:04
Speaker
And then Melvin just played a fucking accordion at the end to like, you know, you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here thing like just play the agoria for like 15 minutes and like its outdoor the downtown must have just been like, what is happening? He played the same recordian riff for like same literally 20 minutes. Like poking in two notes back and back. And it was like echoing through downtown. It was so funny. And earlier that day there had been like Kerry West like a Caribbean festival that just like at night. And folk fest. And folk fest. It was nuts. Yesterday was nuts. And anime And anime-thon. So the freaks were out. all downtown the kinds yeah All kinds of freaks. Including me freak.
00:13:46
Speaker
We were freaking. That's the no-effects update, the heptember miracle. Yeah. Let's do it. It was so sore. We might as well talk about what we're here for. I was? Were you sore? I was in such pain. Yeah, it was my feet. Oh my god. Okay. Yeah. Because I'm like, I did wear dumb shoes, but also everyone's feet were sore. So whatever. When I took my shoes off at home, I felt like my skin had grown into the fabric of my socks and I could not walk around the house without my feet hurting.
00:14:15
Speaker
I was like, did somebody vandalize a McDonald's because my arches are falling? Ta. Yes. I was like, did somebody vandalize a McDonald's? Because. Because my arches are falling. Oh, yeah. All right. Let's thank you.
00:14:31
Speaker
Alright, let's do this. We ate up time. This is Heptember. All a month long we are doing a March Madness style bracket to pit 32 cover songs performed by Real Big Fish in head-to-head battle to determine once again the greatest Real Big Fish cover song of all time. Thanks for everyone who voted into their predictions if you want to follow along. The bracket is at shaloes.com. Shaloes.
00:14:51
Speaker
slash september twenty twenty four The matchups are seeded based on chronological order, so the earlier songs have more favorable placements than the newer songs for no other reason than that was the easiest way to do it. So here's how it's gonna work. The pre-show that we did earlier in August will be ah was all about the Real Big Fish side projects, other bands, songs cut from the bracket, etc. Round one, we'll kick off with us going through the first set of matchups across two parts, then we'll bring on guests for rounds two through the finals, slowly eliminating songs one by one until the ultimate winner is crowned. If you listen to any of our other brackets, you get it, you get it.
00:15:26
Speaker
Who is real big fish? I mean, come on, we did three parts on this band already, so what are you waiting for? Go back and listen with our guests, the Third Rates, Devon Kay, and Gary Mastriano, but if you want a quick recap, here you go. They are the Motastic Meme, formed in California in 1991 as a hair metal cover band before adding a horn section and switching to full-blown ska punk.
00:15:47
Speaker
After their debut indie album Everything Sucks gained underground traction, they resigned to major label Jive for the blockbuster Turn the Radio Off and his ever-present single, Sellout, launching the band into the mainstream. After four years of headlining fame, they released the power-pop-influenced Cheer Up, with lead singer Aaron forming the forces of evil, thinking that his main band was folding.
00:16:06
Speaker
After being convinced to return, he penned the angry We're Not Happy album as an anti-music industry concept album for being dropped to go indie again and reigniting their career as a Dark Ages darling, keeping the scoff flag alive. They had many lineup changes but released a consistent batch of albums including the cult classic Candy Coded Fury and the divisive cover album Fame, Fortune and Fornication.
00:16:26
Speaker
known for their vibrant live act, cheeky lyrics, and horn based 3rd wave scotch sound they are semi active today having gone gold, released 9 albums, multiple best ofs, an amazing live album, and something like 46 covers that we will talk about all month long. We are talking real big fish so here's how we got to start it guys.
00:16:44
Speaker
What are the three things that you're looking for in a real big clip cover song? Oh my goodness. Literally nothing. I don't know why I didn't think this was coming. The original song being something I already like. Yeah, okay. That's a good one. Number one with a bullet. Fair. Original original song good. I got it.
00:17:04
Speaker
No, the original song, I already like salin. A song they cover that I already like. Salin. And then, I don't know, what do they do, I guess? What do they do? Like, I guess it's catchy sometimes. It's catchy. Catchy. Catchy? Okay, good. Okay, no way. I change. Earwormy.
00:17:28
Speaker
Earworm earworm II already know and like earworm. Yeah a song already I know and like and then Toe tapping, but that's kind of earworm. We can come back try to get okay. I got to Joe I'm gonna go I'm gonna go I like when they do ah a part of the song that's not in the same genre as the rest of the song. Because that's a thing to mix up. A genre mix up. And not I'm not saying genre mix up in that they're making blanks song into a ska punk song. But like within the blank song, they've made a ska punk song. I want ah a bar or two of a metal thing or or something. Because they they do that quite often. They do that. I do like that. So I'm going to, yeah, like like a little genre mashing.
00:18:18
Speaker
um I'm gonna say because I'm pretty sure there's gonna be an array of like production Yeah on like throughout these songs ah I'm gonna say it's got to be like a ah well-produced like some bands can get away with like a Like a shitty cover of a song like if I heard rancid doing like a shitty cover of like an old punk song I'd be like, oh, yeah, that's that makes sense. But like real big fish. I want it like studio polish. I want to sound big I want to be produced Well, okay, so like the the production values got to be there um ah it's It's hard to say not an irritating song its No, you can't say that like kind of the opposite of c salin like it like I like I'm okay if it's and a song that I I don't initially like but like there's some of these songs that I'd like know that I don't like the original song and
00:19:16
Speaker
But I love not irritating. yeah My care of the beers is irritating. yeah to know yeah so i'm just go to go not They can take the joke too far. Yes, totally. Y'all know we're here for the jokes, but like unless you're able to take it so far that it comes back again, eh, you know?
00:19:36
Speaker
So, yeah, I'm going to go naughty. I'm going to agree with the big like the big production production. Like I want clean fingernails. Yeah. Like no dirt under the

Favorite Real Big Fish Covers

00:19:46
Speaker
fingernails. I knew that was to be like clean, clean fingernails. Yeah. I need them to like fucking go for it. So fresh man. The more the more anarchy that's in the like the style, the better. Right. Like I just think like Sometimes they play it safe. I just don't want to play in a safe job. I want them to go into that studio and just be like, we don't give a fuck. Yeah. Just like going for it. Totally. And I do have a preference to the 80s songs. I tend to prefer it when they, when they rock an 80s cover. I feel like that's not always the case, but I i generally find i'm I'm attracted to those a lot more. That might have something to do with like, that's kind of where they started, right? Right. You know what I mean? Like, like.
00:20:26
Speaker
Yeah, they just have a little more, because they started out as 80s rock guys, they have a little more of an affinity for that stuff and they're able to yeah push it a little further to your other point. You know what I mean? Yeah. So Celan, what's your third one? A little like cool already a little cool, not too summery.
00:20:45
Speaker
Not too summery. Not too summery. I'm adding a little cool, not too summery. You know what I mean? Cause they're a little cool, not too summery. But it's also a little cool, not too summery. Yeah. A little on the cheer up side, more so than the turn of radio off side. I don't know. I don't want to talk about it like that. All right. Let's start talking about songs though. Hey. Yeah, let's do it. Okay.
00:21:12
Speaker
There's the first match up. Nothing Like a Dame, a cover of a song from the musical South Pacific as written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. It was released in 1996 and featured on the Vacation in Palm Springs split with the Cherry Pop and Daddies. This is Nothing Like a Dame.
00:22:29
Speaker
There is nothing like a day.
00:22:48
Speaker
But yeah, I see why. Well listen, what were all the things I said? or Oh, a song already I know and like, which isn't super fair, but I don't know that song. Yeah, which is fine. It is a little earwormy for sure. Mm-hmm. Not very cool and it's very summery, right? So not yeah it's not that's not a cool song that is a song Yeah, I mean the change is fun. I have trouble with change up is amazing. Yeah I guess that a little bit of trouble with um the change up was better than the rest of the song and
00:23:22
Speaker
Well, and just musical songs from musicals just fucking don't go anywhere unless there's a story before and after them. So yeah it's not true i I don't sign off on that. So I don't know. I always find that like, there like that song was just your opinion. It was just getting to somewhere that might it may have been a chorus, but then it went disco and it wasn't really a chorus. It was just another part of the song because it's from musical. Right. So I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. not not familiar i think he was Maybe you'd have to be like familiar with. But you know what I didn't watch um was the rapping one about the U.S.

Musical Theater Insights

00:23:56
Speaker
Hamilton Hamilton.
00:23:57
Speaker
hamilton Listen to Hamilton songs before I knew what Hamilton was and I was like to be fair Hamilton is Hamilton is sung through which means that there is no talking parts in between. Okay, so it does go So does same with la me when you listen to yeah sound lame is you're getting the entire story by listening to the music also it was written as a modern The music was written to be modern with an old sound. Let's a Hamilton sound. Let's play the Hamilton soundtrack. Yeah, I'd like that. There's a couple bangers on there. It's like 50% bang. Yeah, it's actually not. I don't love the whole thing. Unfortunately, they give the women the worst songs, which sucks. But anyways, it's yeah, that's like the most misogynist thing anyways.
00:24:45
Speaker
what's this now it's going up against a cover of the one hit wonder new wave song by when in rome released in the 2012 on the candy coated fury album this is the promise
00:25:30
Speaker
It's a bit of an obscure cover choice. Yeah, I don't know if I've ever heard this song before. No, I'm unfamiliar. Or maybe if I heard the original, like, be poor but like i don't know it from the lyrics or anything i believe this is a madchester band so yeah this is like real specific the vocals are good i have to say yeah i mean the horns are always on point like the into horn intro is great i really like the vocals of this um he does the new way new way vocals well yeah but like echoey
00:26:07
Speaker
Again, rever man on the same thing with the candy-coated fury. I just miss Scott, you know? Yeah. Crush that harmony. Yeah. One downside. Yeah. All right.
00:26:22
Speaker
Well, I know how I'd vote. Same. Yeah, me too. What was the second one called? The Promise. So there's nothing like... I don't need to know what the first one's called. Versus The Promise. Nothing like a name. All right. Three, two, one. The Promise. Nothing like a name. Shut up, Robert. Get out of here. No, I love that song. Oh, because of the disco thing. Yeah, I know. Disco in it. God damn it. That's fair, isn't it? I failed on the first one.
00:26:49
Speaker
I'm already on it. I'm already not getting what I want. All right You you heard the Rolling Stones you can't always I Did hear the rolling. I have heard the rolling you heard them Hey, guess who doesn't have a cover in this bracket? Rolling Stones. They never did a real big fish song. That's crazy.
00:27:08
Speaker
Isn't that wild? They had like 60 albums, never once covered real big fish. Wild. um This next song is a cover of the Smith song and one of two Morrissey songs on this list. It was released in 2007 on the E.P. Duet all night long. Features guest vocals by Zoloft, the rock and roll destroyer. This is Ask.
00:27:41
Speaker
who's up yeah who's that that you All right,
00:28:06
Speaker
I didn't expect halftime. That surprised me a little bit.
00:28:26
Speaker
I don't mind this whole
00:28:46
Speaker
Yeah, and the the two vocals work really well together. So, good fun fact that that EP do it all night long. Good fun fact. It's a good fun fact. That that EP has ah six songs on it, three performed by Zoloft, three performed by Real Big Fish with dual vocals on each one. but's They're all covers. So three of the covers are in the bracket, including this next one. oh wow This next song is... Load her up.
00:29:12
Speaker
A cover of the Fishbone song released in 2007 on the EP, Duet All Night Long, featured guest vocals by Zoloftherock and Roll Destroyer. This is lion ass bitch. Whoa. I'm right here.
00:29:28
Speaker
That's good. Yeah, man. She's just so tired. She's just a lion ass bitch. She's just lion. I'm always lying down. This is stupid and not cool.
00:29:50
Speaker
we listening to the voodoo goals goals?
00:29:56
Speaker
Did we listen to this already? We definitely have, yeah. We should listen to this already.
00:30:08
Speaker
It's a pretty on-the-nose cover. Yeah. I know we listened to some of the physical cover, but have we listened to this before in the real big fish episode? No, no. Okay, so it's just me thinking about the actual songs? Yes, definitely.
00:30:47
Speaker
They do a good job it doesn't seem like it'd be an easy song to play at all Now Fishbone made hard songs. Yeah, I can't imagine how That would be to play. Yeah, probably very difficult. I would assume it sounded very uh they did a good job of making it sound real big fishy and also making it sound real rbf-y but also real fishmoany that they like did a pretty good job mashed into two sides I know how I voted yeah me too yeah me too I might be out voted okay
00:31:26

No, I'm going to get outvoted again. No, I don't think so. Three, two, one. Last bitch. See, I knew Joey was going to go fishbowled for sure. Oh, for sense. This is better, because it was better. We're going to take a break. Give us a break. When we get back. Give us a break. Break us off of Checker Past. Podcast. Boo. Oh, hey, oh, what'd that puppy do to yourself?
00:31:57
Speaker
Welcome back to Checkered Pass. It's round one, part one of Heptember 2024. We're rolling through real big fish cover brackets. And here's the next one. New York, New York. The cover of the 1977 Liza Minnelli song. Yes. There's the Liza Minnelli song. Cabaret.
00:32:13
Speaker
It was from the Scorsese movie and was not covered by Sinatra until 1979. But the cover was released in 2002 on the album Cheer Up by Real Big Fish. This is New York, New York. So it was originally Liza and then covered by Sinatra. Wow, Mrs. Andre. Herstory erasure again.
00:32:36
Speaker
Not on this podcast. Not on this podcast. No, I'm giving credit where credit's due. I said this is a Eliza Minnelli cover, not a Frank Sinatra cover. Do you think these assholes think it's Eliza cover? Not the- They wrote it on the- They've written it on their artwork. These assholes probably be so nice in person.
00:32:54
Speaker
part of it It just seems like he's doing a Sinatra voice. Well, it'd be weird if he was doing a Liza always. It'd be better! What's weird? He does weirder shit on all the other covers. This would be weird all of a sudden. Get a lady, then. Lift someone up. Harmonize with her. He does all the time. We'll do it on this one. Listen, credit where credit's due. We did just go through a whole cover of record that had him and a lady covering it. Yeah, bring her on. He did, but five years later. But do it again. Do it again, but in the past. Yeah. See? You get it. Okay, I got it.
00:33:33
Speaker
this is really uh it'd be cuter going hey this is music that rich people are like i like it doesn't change It just kind of stays like this He's just doing a cover like it's there's no it doesn't real big fish it up at any point. Okay. It just does that. Okay? That's awesome. No, there's no like there's no all of a sudden like big horns and scott punk and no, it was just yeah, it's just Do they play that live all the time and the crowd goes fucking that I don't remember ever seeing them play that song live. I feel like it would just
00:34:12
Speaker
kill them all yeah like holy moly like you're watching real big fish and it's just like you know all the like like trendy and then everything sucks and all of a sudden whoa where'd the energy go everything does suck
00:34:30
Speaker
All right, I mean i I I don't like that cover. I mean, I'm just gonna go to call say it. Whoa Barry the lead Robert jeez Wow, he's out. Let's see if I like let's see if I like this cover or not yeah like this is a nice i like this cover on That's the whole bracket
00:34:53
Speaker
This is already coming in stronger. What's up with the volume? They're kind of all over the place because they're not leveled. Oh, you said that. Yeah. This is a cover of the Eagles song. Hell yeah. It's the 2009 on the covers album Fame, Fortune, and Vornication. I fucking hate the Eagles, man. I'm sitting next to the dude over here, y'all. I did this my second dude quote. Yeah. i'm I'm into it, though, because I like this song. And also I like this version of this song. It's great.
00:35:23
Speaker
i love the big little bows i i have the soft spot for this kind of bullshit rock and roll yeah totally right it's like ccr a jason type of vibe it's the freaking eagles freaking eagle yeah
00:35:49
Speaker
Yeah, I like the song. See? Okay. So, earworm. Cool. It is a little summery. A little on the summery side. But cool cool in vibes. And Solon likes the original song. So... Right? It's checking a lot of the boxes for Solon. This is a real big fish cover. I would not... My mind's... Maybe I wouldn't scare him.
00:36:13
Speaker
yeah I'm good to vote. I know which ones I like. yes I'm good to vote. I'm good to vote. Patrons get to see me hit my head on the mic so much. That's okay. I also smacked my mic because now I'm not used to it because the mic at when I'm at the studio is like in front of me. Yeah. This one's like one of these fans. Now you're about to drop a rap track. Yeah. You're about to spit mad fire or whatever. I'll spit mad fire.
00:36:36
Speaker
ah Spits mad fire Charizard Yeah, yeah, yeah to to one but The eagles cover. Yeah. Yeah, we got it. Yeah you nanny mouse. Yeah this next one cover of the sublime song released in 2002 on the album cheer up this is boss dj i'm gonna say it right now you guys oh i think this one could go far okay just cover yeah it's a great i think this is fantastic cover it's kind of a wacky sublime choice yeah it's a weird it's it's not a normal or So it is a weird choice for a Sublime song. They do it pretty different, but it's still a similar vibe. It's great. I love this version of the song. Two for two when it comes to Sublime covers. Yeah.
00:37:53
Speaker
That little organ in there, so good.
00:38:04
Speaker
Yeah, it's great one yeah good one on like one of their least Scott albums of all time probably like one of the more like Old-school kind of classic Scott sound. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I really like that cover I love that cover. that's ah That was a solid choice. And it has a nice little change up and it even like in the bridge they'll like they do a little like punk rock thing but it's almost like they took a Sublime song that was kind of mostly acoustic and then made it into more of a mainstream Sublime song. Yeah, it's like they took all of the elements from like a That's literally what Lana did with her sublime cover which sublime cover she did what is they ray is that? her yeah living for easy and dinner in and and that
00:38:51
Speaker
Oh, summertime. Summertime. is I was like, I said summertime, but then no one reacted. Oh, I think you were like 15 feet away from the mic. Summertime by Lana Del Rey is the best sublime cover. And it's, but ah they also cleaned it up and made it pop. She also cleaned it up and made it popier.
00:39:08
Speaker
Have you heard it? Have you not heard Rob? I have. I'm not. I jam. The video was cool. Biggest Lana fan. She's not like a great, she's a slightly problematic and she only has like a couple good songs, but I like her. Yeah. Cause she's cinematic. She's cinematic sad girl music. Uh, I yeah I've heard that. I'm a cinematic sad girl. I've heard of that. I've heard that cover. I had no idea that too. Did it. Yeah. Anyways, uh, that is a good cover. What's it up against?
00:39:34
Speaker
It's up against a cover of the Van Morrison classic released on the 2009 cover album, Fame, Fortune, and Fornication. this isn't but reason why they The reason why they did this cover is because they were misappropriated to say that they had it from the 2002s because of LimeWire and whatnot. k So they decided, okay, well, people think we cover Brown Eyed Girl, so we might as well just cover Brown Eyed Girl. yeah that they did that This was the the fuck we really don't do this song, but we're gonna do this on that episode we that we did yeah Yeah, I think we did listen. Yeah, we did. This is on mr. Peter Do we listen to the original
00:40:14
Speaker
all and a scott tribued well yes we did we did listen oh ok hot this I don't like the original. I'll say that right now. I think it's boring. The original brown-eyed girl? Yeah, whatever. No, he meant the original cover that was- No, I know. I'm just saying separately. I do not like the original song. Yeah, it's kind of bad. No, it sucks. I was like, what? You have such a long brown-eyed girl? Okay, this is news.
00:40:40
Speaker
I was like, this is what you're gonna die on in question B? Yeah, okay. It's just a good ska song because he says skippin' and a jumpin'. That's it. It's the only thing.
00:40:59
Speaker
It's like one of those things that you don't want to sing along to, but you like end up doing it. Earworm. Yeah, earworm. It's like Sweet Caroline. It's not like a good earworm. It just like is an earworm, you know? Yeah. You're like mad. Your brain. Yeah, it's like a tape. Yeah, and you don't want it there.
00:41:15
Speaker
it's It's the RFK. It's not an earworm. Oh, that's a fun game. We should play earworm or tapeworm. Earworm or tapeworm. That's a tapeworm. That's a fun game. That's a tapeworm. That's not an earworm. Okay. I'm ready to... Sweet Caroline. That's another one. Okay. Okay. So I can vote. Yeah, I'm very i'm ready. I'm ready. I've been ready. Being ready. Yeah, I'm ready.
00:41:37
Speaker
Three, two, why but don one. share its ongoing What did you say? I said that. Yeah. The song. The song's so nice. I want to play it twice. Have you said? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not going to say it again. All Are we ready?
00:41:55
Speaker
Oh, this is a big one. Here we go. Here we go. OK, so this is so everyone, if you don't know, every time we do a bracket, there's always the goat, like the song that has to get taken down and we see if it can get taken down or not. I feel like it could go early with me and Joey.
00:42:11
Speaker
like All Out of Angst from No Effects yep and Time Bomb for Rancid over the last two heptembers. Those were the big ones. So this year's Time Bomb is absolutely this one, which is a cover of the Aha song released for the baseball soundtrack from which the band also appears in.

Real Big Fish's 'Take On Me' Discussion

00:42:29
Speaker
And as a single that is arguably the bet the band's second biggest single of all time, this is Take On Me. 25 years.
00:42:40
Speaker
This, uh, baseball's been out. It's crazy. There was just a post about it, like, a week ago. And they went pretty medley with that intro? Yeah.
00:42:54
Speaker
I mean, this is like the archetype, I feel like, of what people think of when they think of a real big fish cutter, right? But also, a hundred this is very elevated music. So Moz? So Moz. It's el not even Moz, it's grocery store. Do you think? Yeah, just...
00:43:21
Speaker
That's it. That's all I hear. Yeah.
00:43:27
Speaker
This is also a song people think they're being funny when they sing it at karaoke. I'm like, yeah, I get it. Yeah, that's funny. Yeah. Real Big Fish did it first. Like, really? Come on now. Yeah. That is fair. 25 years ago. Yeah, that is fair. but That's fair. They did do it first.
00:43:50
Speaker
I, I love that cover. I really do. I think it's great. And this is the the era of real big fish covers. I love the most big production. This is like they they still had tons of studio money. yup ah They're still like little kids. And so there's just like crazy energy all over the place. I just think it's fun. And it's an 80s song. It checks a lot in my box, man. Like yeah take on me as i don't it's not my favorite real big fish cover but i i still love it i think it's wonderful it's it's
00:44:22
Speaker
of the of this list of songs it is the one that i'm like i know that's like the the front runner right off the bat and i want to like dislike it just because of that But it is so fucking good. Is it? We can't. We can't. Our house. They just did. Good job. Yeah. Yeah. I love it. Is it? Love it. Are you like the I can't wait to listen to this? I believe Robert likes it. That I know. I'm just saying it's a good. I know. covers I'm not going to listen to exactly.
00:44:52
Speaker
but i'm not gonna listen to the original song either exactly oh the original song is boring exactly and so is this one that that's my point okay what's it up that's fair so yeah i think that i think it's a genuinely like i no offense to real big fish i think this song is boring the song is boring it's just boring because they did a good job yeah i don't salin doesn't like the original song the original gets an X so kind of makes me like immediately I'd be like that transitive property right the transient property exactly it's going up against a cover of a poison song one of two that they do on the same album at least in 2009 covers his album fame fortune fornication and features guest vocals by Tatiana of tat this is talk dirty to me cougars love voice you want me to say oh yeah cougars fucking I love it
00:46:06
Speaker
like the original song. I like the original song too. Probably booing. I like the harmonies. Good. Sure. That's amazing. Yeah. what i don What's wrong with this? Just because they slowed it down? see you Yeah, this vibe is not my fault. Have you ever heard me talk about how much or how I feel about fifties rock and roll? I like fifties rock and roll. I know, but you know that I do not. I know, but I'm saying that this is, I don't hate this at all. It's really tapping into your billy sensibilities. I like fifties rock and roll. Your sense of billy, do you? I like, I will have to like what I like and you're allowed to like what you like. Yeah, this whole thing is hard. Yeah.
00:46:58
Speaker
I mean, yeah, you gotta get it you can't you cut it off right before they said talk dirty to me talk dirty to me Yeah, it doesn't matter. what We didn't we hear the chorus already. We're the chorus ones already like to no oh jesus they were got it off right before the you cut a sweat two seconds up for the like right where he's at it But that is what the song sounds like it doesn't change up to be fair that's how the cover means all right Go for it. I know, I'm voting. Yeah, I know you both know how you're voting. Yeah. Three, two, one. Talk dirty to me. oh Talk dirty to me. The me's against the me's? Yeah, it was a me down. Me v me. It wasn't me it was a me down. Yeah, this was the me v me. People were wondering how me v me was going to go down this year. Yeah. And we showed them. Row v weight went bad. But you know what? Me v weight, me also went bad. but
00:47:50
Speaker
All right, we got one more matchup for writing for it. this is This is like the second of two... Both of these songs are the second time these artists appeared twice. ah guy Okay. Okay. This first one is a Morrissey cover, not a Smith's cover, but Morrissey solo. Appears on 2005 album We're Not Happy Till You're Not Happy. This is We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful.
00:48:15
Speaker
To be fair, that does sound just like a real big fish song title. Yeah. Well, especially on that album. Yeah, totally. That was like super ed-type music. Yeah, it fit the it fit the the the whatever assignment for that album for sure. Right.
00:48:40
Speaker
This is good! He really Morris-y's up. You're right, Solon. Now I'm hearing it, that he really leans in on the Morris-y. He's good at the Morris-y voice. This also low-key makes this, like, more catchy than the original. But I actually don't hate this. I like the original.
00:49:07
Speaker
This is a cool cover. I'm really impressed with this cover. No, it's a darn good cover. This is the first song Selena actually genuinely likes. I like his Morrissey voice. This is like the best his voice has sound been. Scott's high harmony is wild. Not annoying. why yeah Yeah. I love his vocals on this. These two octaves up on the harmony. That's crazy. This is cool.
00:49:36
Speaker
It's good. Cool. I like the original earworm. Not summery. Not summery. Not summery. See, I like when they do not summery songs. Yeah. I like when Real Big Fish does not summery songs, which is a little not. No, they have a lot. I'd say it's 50 50. I think that that the thing I like about doing these brackets with you is that you've learned something about yourself.
00:50:01
Speaker
me too that's what I like about it all right it's going up against poison ah this is from the 2009 cover album fame fortune fornication yeah this is the second poison cover we have this is nothing but a good time The Venn diagram of, um, real big fish in me is like, I love her Bret Michaels. That's where we can connect. Do you think Aaron Barrett wants, like, Rock of Love? Hell yeah, I bet you he loves Rock of Love. We could probably talk, we could talk about New Wave and Rock of Love and be friends. Our one-sided beef.
00:50:41
Speaker
But this is good too, though. Yeah, i'm having I'm having a good
00:51:02
Speaker
Young people who lose on white gotta sing with something.
00:51:25
Speaker
a hair metal cover generation. Yeah. This was probably a song they covered, if you know what I mean. Totally.
00:51:33
Speaker
Sweet. I like that song. That's a good song. ah you vote i'm just gonna say you guys pull me out it's bullsh might my The one of the things that i guys are going I don't like with my cover band was that I like boys and songs I don't like poison. I hate poison. Yeah. Yeah. But you don't like more. What do you think of Morrissey? I hate Morrissey. Yeah, this is a hate. I hate Morrissey. I think Morrissey sucks. I think Brett Michaels sucks. I think my my favorite hair metal band is Motley Crew and they don't do any Motley Crew songs. so Which is crazy. you know that's great Start My Heart, which is wild. I listen to a song called Kickstart My Heart. I can't believe they didn't do Girls, Girls, Girls. Fuck.
00:52:15
Speaker
I don't know. They didn't use spoken in the boys room. They didn't do anything, man. Spoken in boys room to cover. Do they do Judas Priest? They should. Do they do Judas Priest? Really? Judas Priest is like. It's not hairy enough. No, I guess it's more like. It's too metal. Yeah, it's more metal metal. Yeah. Yeah. OK. Yeah. Right. You got another thing coming. I know how I'm voting. Yeah. Yeah, me too.
00:52:40
Speaker
Okay, three, two, one. This is such a bummer for me. We hate it when our friends become successful. Yeah, that's fun. Yeah, 100%. I love that cover. I knew it was gonna go that way. I love that cover. It's fun. It's a good cover.
00:52:52
Speaker
i I have a small, there's a couple songs on the cover album I like, but I have a small bias against it, because I find it a little samey. Fair. And um I find it a little sleepy in terms of like how they arrange the covers, like they don't really mix it up enough. But there's a couple on there I really like. So there's gonna be a couple I'll throw in there that I will vote for. But for the most part, I'm gonna go early. Like, you know, 96th 2005, that's my era of covers, so.
00:53:19
Speaker
oh yeah That's your Aeros tour. so yeah The Aeros tour? Aeros tour. Some of these didn't go in the direction I thought they were going to go, but some of them were good.
00:53:32
Speaker
still the worship like here ah This is your podcast. yeah your but but ah right It's all of our podcast. It's it's humanity. It's the people's podcast. OK, so here's what's progressing. The promise lion ass bitch. The long run boss DJ take on me and we hate it when our friends become successful.
00:54:00
Speaker
That's not bad. I don't think people will be that mad. It's pretty good. Okay. It won't be that bad. We haven't done any upsets. I can see you both scheming to take take on me out. Of course. I don't think it's good. round I'll take it as as soon as I can. As soon as I can, it's out. i'm here now I'm here to stop it from getting our house. That's my new goal. See, I see you scheming to keep it in. Stop it. I am. I am too. Well, yeah you know what, guys? I'm just happy that I got to hear that little bit of the long run because it's a good song. I liked i genuinely enjoyed one song.
00:54:43
Speaker
i like song on that but i really liked one side i believe I liked a lot of them and I genuinely liked one. salin piquette I genuinely enjoyed one song. I did. I genuinely enjoyed one song. If I'm going to be fully honest, it was one.
