We're potting away. We have things we shouldn't say, but we'll say it anyway. Today is a good day to enrage you with our bracket. Oh, we don't need your love, okay? Vote with me. It'll be done in a week or two. It's heptember 2024, the real big skirm-ish.

Meet the Hosts: Celine and Rob

00:00:52
Speaker
What's up Checkerheads! Welcome to Checker Pasta's Godcast with Celine and Rob. The show where a social TS9DX distortion and a John Cooley Gurmelin ranks explore the history and impact of a different band each episode. Hope to bring in new fans along the way. I'm Saxel Rob, and this is my sister and co-host, the Smokey Bitch, Celine. Smokey ass bitch.
00:01:14
Speaker
Smokey ass bitch, that's the important distinction. Now, now ah ever since last up. um So the bit was, do they cover a social distortions on? Sure do. Oh really? You'll never guess which one. yeah I probably won't like it. I don't like. yeah um And then, Kate, what was all the things you said? It was social distortion and. I said social TS9DX distortion. Joey, what am I referring to? A guitar pedal. OK. A distortion pedal. OK. Why? I thought that was funny. OK. Distortion. Right. th Right. I thought that was funny. Oh, it's because that's the distortion pedal Aaron Barrett uses. Oh, that's even better. Yeah. OK. that That's OK. And then.
00:01:59
Speaker
And then John Cooley-ger Melon Ranks. I like that one. So John Cooley-ger Melon Cam. And then what was in between? Cooley Ranks. Oh, Cooley Ranks was in there. So not another, I was like assuming you did like another like, I don't know, gear thing, but then you just did two bands.
00:02:20
Speaker
yeah two bands covered by real big fish but then one was a band covered by real big fish and the and a pedal and then the other one was a band covered by really big fish and a person who has been on a real big fish song before coolly ranks two so Cool eager melon ranks. so Wow. and I don't know. That's what he said. Oh, really? He said that. I can't be ah accountable to remember what happened 20 seconds ago. It was very good. I remembered it. Big fan. um
00:02:56
Speaker
this is thank you joey this is part two of round one of heptember 2024 and normally we would do a uh pick it up in these uh sessions but last time we had such a long one that we actually had to cut into the actual bracket itself so this time we're just gonna do a Full bracket, no pick it up, just all songs, all all eliminating songs all the way through. um So just to catch up, well actually I'll do my intro first. Do the intro and then I'll catch us up on all the songs that got eliminated so far. Let's do it.
00:03:32
Speaker
So, here's the intro.

HEPTEMBER Event Unveiling

00:03:34
Speaker
This is HEPTEMBER. All month long we are doing a March Madness style bracket to pit 32 cover songs performed by RealBigFish in head-to-head battle to determine once and for all the greatest RBF cover song of all time. Thanks for everyone who voted in their predictions. If you want to follow along, the bracket is at shalange.com. Shalange.
00:03:53
Speaker
slash hep september twenty twenty four The matchups are seeded based on chronological order, so the earlier songs have more favorable placement than newer songs for no other reason than that was the easiest way to do it. Here's how it's going to work. The pre-show will be all about Real Big Fish's side projects, other bands and songs cut from the bracket, so check that out. Round 1, which is two parts, will be kicking everything off here with the CPSC crew.
00:04:17
Speaker
Then we'll have guests on for rounds two through the finals starting next week. If you listen to our madness marches or our heptemperses, then you kind of get what we're all about. So who is real big fish? I mean, come on, we did three parts on this band already, so what are you waiting for? Go back and listen with our guests the third-rates, Devin Cate and Gary Mastriano.
00:04:38
Speaker
But if you want a quick recap, here you go. They are THE Motsa Stick meme formed in California in 1991 as a hair metal cover band, before adding a horn section and switching to full-blown ska punk.

Real Big Fish: Ska to Mainstream

00:04:49
Speaker
After their debut indie album Everything Sucks gained underground traction, they signed to a major label for the blockbuster Turn the Radio Off and its ever-present single Sellout, launching the band into the mainstream.
00:05:00
Speaker
After four years of headlining fame, they released the Power Pop influence Cheer Up with the lead singer Aaron Barrett, forming the forces of evil thinking his band was about to fold. After being convinced to return, he penned the Angry We're Not Happy Till You're Not Happy album as an anti-music industry concept album, before being dropped to go indie again and reigniting their career as Dark Ages darlings keeping the scoff flag alive.
00:05:24
Speaker
They had many lineup changes but released a consistent batch of albums, including the cult classic Candy Coded Fury and the divisive cover album Fame, Fortune and Fornication. Known for their vibrant live act, cheeky lyrics and horn-based third wave scotch sound, they are still semi-active today having gone gold, releasing 9 albums, multiple best ofs, an amazing live record and something like 46 covers that we will talk about all month long. to lyn joey Do

Song Selection Criteria

00:05:48
Speaker
you remember what you are looking for? No. I should have wrote it down. Did you write it down? It was like two days ago. Yeah, he wrote it down. It was yesterday. No, two days ago. Two days ago. Two days ago. Yesterday I was sleeping. Definitely not yesterday. Um, I said, not too summery, gotta be kind of cool. Yep. And then I said earworm.
00:06:12
Speaker
Not tapeworm. Not tapeworm. Earworm, not a tapeworm. Not tapeworm. And then I said, what did I say? You said it was a song you already liked. Yeah, you had to already like the original. I'd say, no, it's not, it's more so a song I already don't like. Do you know what I mean? It's more of if I have like a disdain for a song than if I like it. You can't hate it. It's like, it's a double negative. You can't hate it. Yes. I get it.
00:06:41
Speaker
Yeah. I understand. So I just need to make that distinction. Yeah. joe Joseph. Uh, genre mashy, I think. I wanted to know why I like a genre mashy thing. I like the big production. Them big productions. Uh, what was my third thing? Do you remember what my third thing was?
00:07:02
Speaker
you said does ah did does just was is the genre master the same thing as like well yeah changing it midway yeah yeah and then ah no i don't know i can't remember what it was irritating not irritating that's the best one not irritating yeah that's the most important one really And I said, clean fingernails, yeah anarchy in the studio, whoa and I prefer the 80s covers. I like that your third thing you need it to be is a preference.
00:07:40
Speaker
it Yeah, that I could also say I prefer their first lineup for covers That might be tipping it too much but you like that's a reference now something sound like it is i don't know tipping it too much I should just start doing that cuz like I don't know half the shit Rob says so, you know can Just start throwing some reps out there. Yeah, and then just like so maybe it is something. Hey, maybe it's something. Maybe it's something. Remember when they said that line, those people, maybe it's something. Hey, maybe it's something. Yeah. So, so far, what has progressed around to was the promise, right lion ass bitch, the long run, boss DJ,
00:08:31
Speaker
take on me and we hate it when our friends become successful. Yeah. So that's what's called that's what's progressing so so far. Good. And so today we're going to start with tracks 13 through 32. We're going to eliminate a lot of songs. like See you later. Something like 10.
00:08:52
Speaker
All right, so let's start with the first one.

Cover Song Analysis: Style and Critique

00:08:54
Speaker
Uniform of Destruction, a cover of the rare suburban rhythm song, appears on Tazy's ska parades, running naked through the cornfield comp from 1998. This is Uniform of Destruction.
00:09:20
Speaker
It's pretty summery. Yep. Yep.
00:09:31
Speaker
Yep, that's... I guess. Something. The original is not very submarine, because it's a suburban rhythm. right i feel like somey Right. I feel like I'd like the original
00:09:54
Speaker
Can you turn this up actually? Yeah, that's better.
00:10:10
Speaker
Okay, that's pretty funny. That was an interview from suburban rhythm. Really? that's what they yeah are Were they funny? Yeah, that's like all their songs are are like silly. Yeah, I guess like Inappropriate jokes. Yeah. Yeah, yeah nonetheless They are joke. How do you guys feel about that? It's pretty straightforward. It's like ska punk. It's like ska chorus or ska verse punk chorus and it's like the song
00:10:43
Speaker
Yeah, it's okay. You side-eyed. I get to really see the front front view of you when we record like this. this one This one's a little tough for me because I don't know the original.
00:10:55
Speaker
You know what I mean? like a lot like don some Sometimes it's hard to judge a cover because if you've never heard the original, because you don't know what to base it through. I feel like that, or is that the purest way? Or is that the purest way? You bring up a good point. Like maybe um Smooth Criminal is better. It is. From Alien at Farm Better first. Yeah. Maybe. Actually, well, whatever. Michael Jackson's music is a good, and bad person.
00:11:26
Speaker
Bad person music yeah um classic alien and farm good band are they? i know that lo yeah i seem yeah pretty good that They actually just put out like a album like this year in the last year or so reppin for shaved head guys everywhere Yeah, they they ain't trapped. They ain't trapped. I trap don't plug a theyre free They're roaming. They're roaming the land because they ain't trapped.
00:11:50
Speaker
They ain't trapped the band. Yeah, cuz they're also been trapped Oh is super probably are they I don't know Yeah, the guy. Oh, yeah, I think we've discussed this head Republican or something. Oh, he's like just all kinds of shitty that guy. Whoa Okay, what's it? What is this up? You know a good point? Yeah, what's like a so you're playing us out? Play it up. It's it's going up against the cover of the matals classic
00:12:13
Speaker
This song appears on the Wild Thornberrys Movie Soundtrack yeah as well as the 2009 covers album Fame Fortune Fornication. This is Joey's like favorite song I think. This is Joey's favorite song. I had to really fight not to make this the winner of my bracket because I knew it would not make it all the way.
00:12:37
Speaker
For a minute I was like who's covering this?
00:12:56
Speaker
I don't hate that. It's pretty fun. It's not hitting the nostalgia for me though. You know what is it? I will say...
00:13:25
Speaker
But like, for how long has it hit? that No, but like, he doesn't sing, like I think that's like very once in a, like the covers, I feel like, bring out a vibrato. But he doesn't often use vibrato when he's singing.
00:13:41
Speaker
That's weird. He kind of just does a bit. He's definitely doing a bit there. Well, I'm gonna just I'm I'm well yeah I'm no expert. It's something to watch out. No, but but you put it in the universe. So now we got to watch out for ya Check your heads hit it hit us up with Aaron Barrett vibrato Let us know. Yeah, super cut. Someone's just gonna fucking like send me all these songs that it's just like he'd be like, ooh, just surge tanking, just like fucking operatic. yeah Damn, that's another band they've never covered. Thank God. They need to. They don't need to touch soad. What if it's like sugar or something? That'd be a fun cover.
00:14:23
Speaker
Yeah, that'd be actually kind of silly. No. wood So I'm ready. OK, so we got Monkey Man. Yeah. Yeah. And it's going and it's going up against uniformed destruction's name of the song. i can go in the Oh, my eye is not the name of the song. OK. So OK, I know how I'm voting, though. Yeah. Yeah, me too. yeah Yeah. Yeah. Three, two, one. Monkey Man. Monkey Man. it's Got to be Monkey Man. Yeah, it's a great song. Great cover. Great song. Wow. Yeah.
00:14:54
Speaker
All right, next up we have... Shocking About a Revolution, which is a cover of the Tracy Chapman song appearing on the 2005 album, We're Not Happy Till You're Not Happy. This was a single on this record, which is kind of funny. So let's listen to that.
00:15:27
Speaker
I like the kind of low-fi-y vocal thing.
00:15:35
Speaker
The whole sound is kind of like an old-school reggae kind of sound to it. just just not you And this is a
00:15:57
Speaker
It's losing against the dogs, but that is a high bar. yeah
00:16:08
Speaker
It's alright. The dogs are way more interesting than the dogs.
00:16:18
Speaker
The song is not as soft. It's not as cute. It's not as stinky. It's definitely not as stinky. What cute little targety i'm doing?
00:16:33
Speaker
Yeah, that I didn't mind that song so much. ah You know, i'm I'm usually not one for like kind of the slower jams usually, but that was okay.
00:16:44
Speaker
Oh, that was boring. I don't care. That's fair. Yeah, it's. He had a little vibrato though. He did have a little, not much, but there was a little. ah Maybe because like sometimes when he covers, he's emulating the singer. He's covering. I know. And now I want. Tracy Chapman a little bit. I know. I need to hear more. I'm on vibrato watch.

Vocal Styles: The Vibrato Debate

00:17:06
Speaker
Vibrato watch vi broaddo watch shot every time Yeah, it's like it's like when we're on so first we were on Vibra slap watch now. Yeah, the broader watch. Yeah, what's with the Vibras? I'm a vibrator. Well, I don't think I'd be very drunk if I was on the broader watch Sorry, I don't think I'd be very drunk if I was on oh wait if I was taking shots like a vibrato shot I I don't know what that is. It's just taking a shot when you hear the vibrato. If I was playing against. If I was playing a game where you take a shot every time he had a vibrato, I don't think I'd be very drunk. There we go. Now I got it. Thank you. Work better is a full sentence. That's for sure. Yeah. A cover of the Slade song, Terrible Spelling and All, appears on the 2005 covers album, Fame, Fortune, and Fornication. This is Mama We're All Crazy Now. This guy's loved misspelling stuff. The Slade? Yeah. Come on, feel the noises. I feel like there were more misspellers than there were an actual band. Probably.
00:18:16
Speaker
This is where it's getting. Maybe because I've had like a long day at work and I'm tired, but maybe I have like less patience. So far, like barely any vibrato.
00:18:56
Speaker
do think a lot I looked at this matchup and I was like, this is a real devil's choice. Okay. Those are not my favorite. Okay. I was worried. I'm like, am I tired? Okay. Those were boring. buddha Both of those. I don't know. I'm a cranky girl who's really moody. This is what people are here for. They got it here. Okay, well those two songs are boomer and they suck I never want to hear them again They're boring and I don't even know why bother making music if that's what it sounds. Oh No See there's no that's why I have to calm it down Rob. That's why I can't let it loose because it gets just mean
00:19:33
Speaker
And now it's time for you to pick one. I don't care. i I don't even know which one to choose. Can I like choose not to vote and see if you guys... You're going to, for the first time in bracket history, you're going to abstain? Yeah, maybe. I think these are poop. Okay, Joey, let's see what happens. Let's see what happens. I'll break the tie. Two, one.
00:19:56
Speaker
Mama, we're all crazy now. Yeah, you gotta break it. You got it. What the hell did the first one sounded like? It was it it was sleepy. It was kind of it was softer and stinky. Yeah, it was kind of an old-school reggae But taking back blah blah blah taking taking the first one and sure taking back blah blah blah. Yeah, right taking back a revolution ah Talking blah blah revolution What if real big fish hurts us? Next up what if a cup a cover of the operation I'd be classic it appears on the take warning compilation as well as the keep your seat EP 1997 this is unity um I like up ivy how much So that's a big up This your cleaned it up
00:20:52
Speaker
They took all the dirt under the fingernails out. Yeah, they cleaned they they some of that pretty sharp soap and they cleaned their hands really well. yeah
00:21:04
Speaker
I don't even know what I'm listening to right now. You're listening to Unity. What is he doing with his voice? Put it through a muffly deal. Yeah, but he's not enunciating. No.
00:21:23
Speaker
It's also kind of like an old school phone sound. I don't like it. No? No. That's the dirt. The cover rules. He's putting the dirt back under the picture. You know? The original song is really good.
00:21:43
Speaker
Oh, I have heard this over and over all the time. People play this all the time. I forgot. Yeah. Now this is like unhook a lot of memories. This part is the best part of this cover. But that's because it's like the least real big fishy.
00:22:00
Speaker
and then they bring this back in and it's like that's not necessary because they based their version on a horn based version of unity that is like out in the universe so maybe that's better than that maybe that's better it's like let's take op ivy and like make it so it can be played at disneyland I don't know that might be pushing it. I don't know that I don't so know if a song with like 30 f-bombs is gonna get played at Disneyland, but I Didn't even know you never know I guess you disens i am so discent i've been You know what I've never been to Disneyland. I don't know what it's like these days. Maybe it's just chaos Maybe they're just dropping f-bombs all over. Maybe it's a pumpkin droplet, but Disneyland drunk pumpkin No, nothing there. Nope
00:22:47
Speaker
it's going up against a cover of the alt rock band wonder stuff song appearing on the 2012 album candy coated fury don't let me down gently oh i thought it was i thought it was don't let me
00:24:12
Speaker
sprinkles in little ones is all. Um, no. No? No, still no? Still, yes. Still? Yes or no? Like I know how I'm voting. I know I'm voting on that. I didn't like hate either of them. So we're not at the last match up. That's good. Well, the last match up was wild. Yeah. and I'd rather not maybe listen to the second one for sure. But I still didn't like have a great time with the first one because it just made me want to listen to the ah better song. The original? be Okay.
00:24:47
Speaker
Okay, sure. You ready? okay Yeah. Locked in. Three, three, two, one. Five is good. Yeah, got it. You you need an animus That unity cover is awesome I'm so glad I was very scared y'all we're gonna vote off of it. No, no very absolutely not that Dis a hard disagree. So in that's like peak real big fish cover for me. I love unity cover so good I probably gonna like the next one
00:25:22
Speaker
You know what? because i know why way this is so going Yes, yeah i I'm probably for sure gonna love the the song. Yeah, I'll get to know what it is. This is a this is a wild cover choice what is i This is no, i that's a side step from no, here's why it's weird because it was on a psychobilly compilation and Oh, that's fun. That is pretty weird. Yeah. Yeah, it was on ghost a Go Cat Go. You were there at the time. It wasn't weird. And Little Big Fish. They're the only band on there that's not a psychobilly band. Yeah, but like Scott and Psychobilly were they got Stray Cat Strut? Like, what did they have to do to get that song? Who's dick did they have? Just be a way bigger band and be like, yeah, we'll do Stray Cats, but we're doing Stray Cat Strut.
00:26:16
Speaker
Everyone else is like, okay. Have you seen my pompadour? Mutton chops. Oh, mutton chops. He's a pomp. He was pompy. Yeah, he was pompin'. He was pompin' back. He greased his little hair back. He was choppin' big time, though. Yeah. It was all about them chops. Pompin' and choppin'. Pompin' and choppin', that's... Albus hair, Albus hair. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's listen. This is it, straight cat strut. Play it. DJ.
00:27:08
Speaker
it's kind of like Brian Stetster. I like Brian Stetster. Yeah, Brian Stetster, orchestra, doing a Stray Cats song, which they do also. I do and I don't. I will stand by Brian Brian Setzer, orchestra, doing straight cats. Crazy. How would they do that?
00:27:50
Speaker
No vibrato for him.
00:27:56
Speaker
meow they' cry you yeah yeah You did cut it off right before he said don't cross my path. You gotta listen to the middle if it makes it to the next round. um Hell yeah. That's awesome. That's cool. That's one of the best songs I've heard this whole fucking time. they I knew it. they did they did but i fucking knew What I like that song and they did a good job they didn't real big fish it up if anyone's playing at home big bad if anyone's playing at home, and they were like Celine's gonna make stray cat strut move at least two or three round
00:28:30
Speaker
good may have been a really mono Yeah. Was that not a well done cover? Yeah, it was good. I enjoyed it. You sung along. Yeah. Hell yeah. It was good. I very much enjoyed it. ah The Stray Cats are too slow. And songs are a little slow. So it's fine. They spit that one up a little bit, I feel like.
00:28:55
Speaker
yeah yeah I like, ah I like, I like, yeah, they sped, they sped it up and i like I like a Kerner moment. I know. That's why this is, this is why we all work together. It's like a good vibe. It's going up against It's Not Easy, a cover of the song from the Disney film, Pete's Dragon, appeared on the 2007 EP, Duet All Night Long, featuring guest vocals by Zoloft, the rock and roll destroyer. This is It's Not Easy. Quick Any of you watch that movie?
00:29:25
Speaker
Pete's dragon? Yeah. Didn't we watch it together? When I was a kid, yeah. No, this one. This release of this the new
00:29:54
Speaker
The originals from from the movie and this is a cover of it or this was it it was an original song before and they covered this for like objectively bad It was a movie from the original Pete's dragon that they did a cover of okay on Okay, and then there's so it's better when she's singing
00:30:12
Speaker
I get what they're- I don't need to- I guess I don't have to be an asshole. They're like doing a thing. I just don't like listening to it. She's cool though.
00:30:24
Speaker
It is like an old school rock and roll move. And it's also like a musical song. like it's you know like it did They're doing a musical. It's like a not like a song. It's like covering a Muppet song. She's really up in the vibrato watch. True that.
00:30:42
Speaker
Which I'm... I'm predisposed to... You can turn me off. I'm predisposed to not enjoy. Yeah, Rob's anti-musical. Yeah. I do like Muppet songs. Yeah, I like those musicals, but yeah. that's show That shan't be the same. No. I like musicals that have fish-slapping songs in them. You're like, we've got cabin fever, and I've got it too!
00:31:08
Speaker
Yeah, I like that. I like that song, We're the Knights of the Round Table from ah Monty Python and the Holy Grail. That's a good one. that counts what about that What about Brave Sir Robin? Fantastic music, kind of how I'm voting. Yeah, me too. Yeah, obviously. Three, two, one. Straight cat strip. Straight cat strip. We're all doing it. I'm a ladies man.
00:31:33
Speaker
And we'll see if I can get Unity to kick it out of the next round after. I have a plan. oh yeah What's your plan? To make a case to my guest? Yeah, I'll make a case, too. You know I'll make a case. Oh, there'll be cases. There'll be cases. There's gonna be so many cases. There's gonna be lens crafters in here.
00:31:58
Speaker
because there's so many cases people will ask if they if i have the time glasses cases is that a popular item in let's craft absolutely i guess they come with every pair every glass every pair of glasses you see in that place has at least one case and i bet they have extras Alright, you're right. You're right, you're right. Okay, so let's do a break and when we get back, more bracket. Yeah.
00:32:33
Speaker
Welcome back to Checkered Past. The CPSC crew here is going through round one part duh of the Heptember 2024 real big skirm-ish. Next up we have a cover of the Lita for hair lita four lia Ford hair metal classic from the 2000 compilation Metalliska. This is Kiss Me Deadly. Hell yeah. Love this song. It's a good song.
00:33:00
Speaker
Let me tell you what I did. you did I went
00:33:55
Speaker
It's not crazy summery. Nope, not that summery, nope. It's still a little summer. It's a little warm. It's overcast. Yeah, it's like a fall. Partly cloudy. It's like a warm fall. Partly cloudy.
00:34:12
Speaker
It's summer. Yeah, that's good. That was good. Even you love it so much. Is that your number one? Well, that's so yeah yeah my number one. But again, this is in that sweet spot in those like when it's like clear they went into the studio, just went crazy, put all the production money behind it.
00:34:31
Speaker
like it sounds expensive like it's an expensive sounding cover it does sound expensive yeah and i love it that's it that's a top tier real big fish cover in my mind yeah i think they did a fan that's pretty pretty catchy yeah but also the originals a little it was a little more earworm than tapeworm for sure and i love the original so much so yeah it is what it is It's a dancing song. They're a band that makes dancing music a dancing song. It all works. And they did do a good job at it. It's a little clean sounding for like my personal musical taste, but... But that works for Robin Eye's criteria. Criterium. Yeah. Criterium. It works for mine as well. What did I... Yeah, it worked for mine as well.
00:35:18
Speaker
Yeah, that's true. You like the ridge. Yeah. I wish real big fish wasn't as clean sounding. Yeah, you've said that before. Yeah. So it's going up against the cover of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song from the 2009 covers album, Fame Fortune and

Cover Comparisons: 'Kiss Me Deadly' vs. 'Won't Back Down'

00:35:32
Speaker
Fornication. This is Won't Back Down. This is a jam too. Yeah. Two OGs I like. I love this song. Yeah. This is a real karaoke v karaoke. Lisa Edmonton.
00:35:48
Speaker
This is pretty good. Why'd you put these two against each other, Robert?
00:36:05
Speaker
this is a... Yeah, Tom Petty is one of my, like, dad rock face. But also, like,
00:36:19
Speaker
That's why they choose the songs they choose. No vibrato, I can't do it. I can try to sing guitar solo, but that singer's doing vibrato. No dice.
00:36:41
Speaker
Yeah, he's a guitar guy. definitely that guy yeah he's He's a guitar guy for sure.
00:36:52
Speaker
Do you think he's a better guitarist and singer? I think he's pretty fucking good at both of them. To be honest. take yeah Um, I mean like that would be really sleepy at a show and like kiss me deadly with fucking light the room on fire, you know Yeah, like great lights. You're going to get a beer at won't back down and you're checking your phone But you're fucking no way you're fucking lighting up a sick doobie and hey Yeah, just I mean if if you're a punk and drublic again sure but most fire one up for old Tom, you know
00:37:31
Speaker
the security is like man you can't smoke that in here sorry firing up one for old Tom yeah they'd be like all yeah it man yeah and let's let's get to the point roll another joint he said those words so you know you gotta let me smoke this here exactly Tom Betty told you to What if they have bad, oh anyways, no, go on. Sorry to cut the screen. Three, two, one. Kiss me deadly. We did it. that's ah That song's a ah big one. I feel like it's going to go pretty far. Yeah, that shit rips. It's a ripper. Real good.
00:38:11
Speaker
All right, here's a cover of the J. Guile song. It appears as a bonus track on the end of the 2002 album Cheer Up. Either you love it or you hate it, and I know someone who loves this song. Who? So give it to
00:38:35
Speaker
yeah uh what is it something she's a centerfold something is a centerfold yeah yeah yeah also um freeze freeze frame freeze oh yeah that's right yeah it's pretty catchy and not too summery pretty summery earworm earworm not tape worm for sure Uh, earworm. Yeah, earworm, not paper. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. This is pretty fun, and pretty, like, real big fish-esque. Not annoying. Nope.
00:39:12
Speaker
You think he's as good of a singer as a guitar player? I think when he does, like, punky parts like this, I think he puts on that he's not a good singer. I think he's like an a fantastic singer, actually. Fantastic. Yeah.
00:39:30
Speaker
But you know what, it might be a lot of that backing vocal-like music. I think he's a good singer and a great guitar player.
00:39:42
Speaker
good You know what I and I because I said on the candy coat This is not a terrible opinion because I've said on the candy coated episode. That's a lot of the songs Really miss Scott and I think that there's a big thing about Aaron and Scott being together. Scott is a great singer. Scott is a fantastic singer. Yes. Yes, but he does elevate Aaron. Absolutely. Because he adds a vibrato underneath his flat voice. You know what? That's true too. Cause that's what I mean that's sound good. Scott is a vibro boy. He's a vibrato boo. He's a singer singer. yeah Scott is not like your guys excuse for Scott actually being a good singer is like, no, he's actually a good singer. He holds back as a style choice, but he's an an amazing singer. He's just, he's just holding back. He's holding back.
00:40:34
Speaker
No, he's just not that good. For Aaron, not for Scott. No, Scott's a great singer. Everyone's reasoning for Aaron being a good singer. He's holding back. No, I don't think he's holding back. I just think that he does shitty punk singing on the punky parts, and he does more real singy singing on other parts. I think he's a better singer when he does punk. I think that's how he shines.
00:40:59
Speaker
I think what I'm learning from doing this whole bracket is that he ah And we've got to get through some songs here, but yeah yeah, he does feel like he's costuming his his singing a lot Yeah, like it's it's almost like he's he's he puts one on depending on the song like he's doing a different singing bit of Yeah, he's yeah, he got yeah, he's chameleon. Yeah, that's what I've been saying I'm yes, but I still don't think he is like full of uh Vocal talent, but I was gonna have like a five he doesn't he doesn't have a yeah pelican. He's not Scott He's not Scott. thats Yeah, he's not Scott. Okay. So what I what I will agree with you on that I think I have a fair point
00:41:44
Speaker
You do have a fair point. i know yeah I'm not saying you don't. I'm working through it. No, i'm mom I'm saying that to the podcast. oh Yeah. i was No, I think you guys get what I'm saying.
00:41:55
Speaker
yeah It is going up against the John Cougar Mellencamp song from 2009's cover album, Fame, Fortune, and Portnication, the authority song. um Teddy Mellencamp is on like Real Housewives sometimes, the daughter of John Kugermelenkamp? Is she a little bear? No, she's just so annoying, kind of sucks. that Like, she's like, people harp on her just because she's like, boring and sucks and promotes unhealthy weight stuff. But I hate Americana Rock, so you I already am just like, John Kugermelenkamp's a real boo for me. But he's singing that. He's doing a punk thing.
00:42:36
Speaker
I prefer it. He actually had some vibrato there.
00:42:52
Speaker
like John Cougar melon camp? My mom played this album a lot. A lot. I have a hard time with a very can of rock. I also do, but... I respect your mom. of the air
00:43:10
Speaker
So my issue with this song. Yeah. Okay. That's enough. I think. Yeah. Is that instead of having the horns do the, darn i and and and he just plays the guitar part and I'm like, well, that's just the point. you're you're Yeah. What's the point? You might as well just play the fucking song that was originally written. Yeah. Like you had such an opportunity to Scott up even more in a really cool way and chose to kind of do the kind of lazier way. So that's what my issue with that song is.
00:43:36
Speaker
Kind of the opposite of what he did with the Kiss Me Deadly, because they really effectively used the horns to do the synth stuff. All the other parts. Yeah, totally. Yeah. I know how I'm voting. One, give it to me. Give it to me. Yeah, give it to me. I'm going to go with that one. What a great song. Yeah.
00:44:00
Speaker
Alright, next matchup, a cover of the Duran Duran song appears on the 1997 tribute album. To me, this is the time bomb. Hungry, like the wolf. yeah this one's no This one's right up there too. i think this is like ah I'll wait until like this matchup is done and I'll give my thoughts. I guess this is the one I've known the most my whole life. Almost one of the biggest real big fish songs I've heard. Like the most. Yeah. i'm go to kill it And you're talking over his weird monologue. Yeah. know About how he's chasing like women. a bit of hot nookie I don't like it. Yeah. Pinch and squeal. Whatever. You know, however it goes. We're animals, right? We're out of control. We're fierce. Animals. Crazy. Urgh. That's what I'm saying. Probably was 20 when he wrote this song. Right. I mean, it's weird. that's okay Don't love that. It's just weird. It's uncomfortable to listen to. Yeah.
00:45:12
Speaker
I think this cover informed a lot of ska covers going forward in general. I would agree, yeah.
00:45:25
Speaker
They made good decisions with the timing. Yeah, doing like a swing.
00:45:44
Speaker
Yeah, it's probably good. Yeah. um Yeah. So again, I'm saving my thought. Why For what? Because it's web ah ah it's going up against a cover of the motherfucking cure. Oh, OK. And they're going to have a wrap up after these two.
00:46:00
Speaker
Which, uh, say that again. You're going to like, say your thoughts after these two play. yes okay can yeah So it appears on the live album. Our live album is better than your live album, but didn't show up until a recorded version until the best of us for the rest of us in 2010, which is this version, because I do not put live versions onto the bracket this time around. right So this is a cover of a cover, a redo of a cover of the cure song. All right.
00:46:26
Speaker
but um
00:46:34
Speaker
This is one of your number ones, Rob. first Well, sorry, I know you're waiting. Rob loves to care and I know he loves this song, so... He's about to explode! Yeah, he's really trying to contain himself. I'm not helping, but I know her fact that he loves this. There's just no way he doesn't.
00:46:57
Speaker
And also this is like... too I like that I was gonna say it really it sounds like all of the other best reallyy Not that summary. I don't think you comment on that Rob. Do you think it's something else? Yeah, you can you caught can you comment on? that and Of the original is it yeah possible for a cure song to sound summary? Yeah I don't know, the Cure to Sound summary? Yeah, they have a couple songs, yeah. Rob had this insane, like, multi-volume B-side collection, yeah.
00:47:36
Speaker
That's cool.
00:47:46
Speaker
Just using the horns of the synth it's the fucking That's the that's the power move. Yeah. Yeah, I really ah that one to me I feel like I feel more in the feels that yeah, I to the original Yeah, it just has more like feels. Okay. Okay is the time So, yeah, yeah. So, ah yeah, so the Cure is my favorite band of all time. Like, that's my all time favorite band. ah And the Three Imaginary Boys, Boys Don't Cry, that era, like their first two, three records are my favorite records. um So obviously I'm pretty like nostalgic to their songs and Rubyfish do a good job covering it. um The live album is a superior version of it.
00:48:32
Speaker
But Hungry Like the Wolf, I agree, is the wall that is the best real big fish cover. whoa I have to see how it matches up against other songs. I think this is the best litmus test so far because this is like one of my favorite songs, like original favorite songs ever. But I still think Hungry Like the Wolf is a better song. who like I'm giving away my vote.
00:48:56
Speaker
I think the horn arrangements are like incredible. Like the horn, the choice, like when the horns like pop in in that song, it's like so perfectly done. I'd rather listen to the boys don't cry cover. That's fair. I just I also think at the end, like at the very end, when it picks up at double time on Hungry Like the Wolf, it's just so fun and cool. So those are my thoughts. So I know I'm voting. Oh, I know how I'm voting.
00:49:26
Speaker
Okay. we yeah We kind of know how Selen's going to be. So I'm voting. So Joey's the real yeah that's why they yeah but yeah yeah the question mark. Three, two, one. Boys don't cry. Of the two songs, Hungry Like the Wolf, i how the original is, i prefer but I'm just not really into the cure. And I do like a lot of that album that Duran Duran album, The Hungry Like the Wolf is on.
00:49:55
Speaker
I had it on vinyl and even tape when I was a kid, I think. I like it a lot, so. And that, yeah, like, you're right. That's- I always want to render it to be better. As Celine said. As Celine said. I always listen to it, and I'm like, why is it not better? It's like not as catchy as it should be. There's some bangers, but like- Rio? That's insane. Yeah, Rio. She dances on the sand. I said there's some good songs. I said there's some amazing songs. Listening to it all the way through, there's some like fucking skippers. It's just because in the 80s they decided to make every song five and a half minutes instead of just like three or four. But a lot of my Depeche Mode albums I don't skip. That's cool. Is there a Depeche Mode cover? I wish. No, but there's a cover of the Social Distortion song that appears on the 2005 album We're Not Happened.

Phil Collins Cover Praise

00:50:41
Speaker
Story of My Life. I don't want to listen to it. I'm going to leave the room. I'm just kidding.
00:50:47
Speaker
also ah Also a single. We're not happy. Of course it was. Who covers
00:51:06
Speaker
This is such a bad song. The original song, this does not pass the original. I don't hate it. I hate the original. I hate social distortion. I think it's so fucking boring. Speaking of bad vocalists, it's just like, I don't really, like I do not see what other people see. It's middle of the line. It's cause people heard it when they're young, maybe. What if Mike Ness listens to this podcast? He's doing and here just fine, I think.
00:51:36
Speaker
I agree. I'm a little better girl in Canada cannot like fucking social distortion. I had to fucking be forced to so many older men forcing me to be like, this is good. And I'm like, yeah, sure.
00:51:51
Speaker
i like that they changed it up a bit but it's very boring i think we've heard it yeah we've heard it lots we've heard it i sometimes worry about like the way that those their covers on this record were done because they were singles and they were done that way it's like are they trying to sound like the strokes A little bit. Maybe. They're trying to have like a garage, a garage band thing. Yeah. In 2005, that would have been the thing. To me, whatever they're doing doesn't quite work. No, I'm not a fan of that. Like it doesn't work. Like they either need to like, anyways, whatever. It's going up against the cover of the Phil Collins solo song. Hell yeah. That appears on the 2007 album, Monkeys for Nothing and the Chimps for Free. This is Another Day in Paradise. Pass this song I don't hate.
00:52:41
Speaker
I love Phil Collins. This is a great song. This is a sick song. I already kind of like what they're doing. What was this on, sorry? Monkeys for Nothing and the Chimps for Free. No, no, what was their... Oh, sorry, that was the name of their release that it was on? Because I feel like I heard it more than that. I don't hate this. I love Phil Collins. I mean, I'm sold already. We could vote.
00:53:07
Speaker
No, I wanna hear it. I've never heard this. i' got get I'm just saying I know how I feel about the other song versus this song. So do I, and I'm not mad. Wow, pretty good, I guess. I just love this song so good.
00:53:30
Speaker
They're not bad.
00:53:41
Speaker
All right. Story of my life versus another day in paradise. Yep. Three, two, one. Another day in paradise. Imagine you're just like, I love story of my life. Story of my life actually you guys. All right. We're almost there. Two more match ups. Okay. This is a cover of the Pixies song. Okay. Uh, from the tribute album. Where is my mind? Tribute to the Pixies from 1999. This is a gigantic. Yeah. Great.
00:54:25
Speaker
they're going to be fishy. They're going for it. Somebody, somebody take that fucking vocal effect away from Eric.
00:54:39
Speaker
Especially because I feel like he only does it in covers. I can't hear what he's saying. I literally can't understand. I don't like this and I love this But this is weird. But you like electronic music that people who make electronic music make. Yeah, not a fucking third wave ska band.
00:55:06
Speaker
There's a guitar. Yeah. So. No.
00:55:12
Speaker
You know what I will say, they did take a big swing. It was a big swing. Big swing. Real big. A real big swing. A real big swing. A real big swing with a real big miss. And it's going up against the cover of the Desmond Decker Rocksteady classic from the 2009 covers album Fame Fortune and Fornication. This is Keep a Cool Head. Okay, I think why he did the crazy vocal effect is he just sipped like that pixie's vocal ranges and said like gigantic.
00:55:40
Speaker
gigantic it's like that high that's why he didn't that's why he did all those it's so funny because he like will almost sound like he's gonna do a fake in jamaican but then he doesn't He pulls back on this one. He does pull back, yeah, right? Unlike that other one we were looking for, where he pulled back not a one.
00:56:30
Speaker
all right yeah just fine but i guess the other one was so bad okay so three two one keep keep a cool head yeah keep a cool head hell yeah that's a little yeah and it's a it's a very fine cover that they gigantic i don't know man yeah i don't know about that people seem to bring it up a lot it's weird I hear them talk about it. It's not good in my opinion, but what do I know? I'm just one man. Yeah. i don't know Last match up. Let's do it.
00:57:07
Speaker
cover of the Oingo Boingo song that appears on the 2005 compilation Dead Band's Party, tribute to Oingo Boingo. This is We Close Our Eyes. I'm really sad that Denny Elfman sucks. Yeah, that's really sad. Really, really sad to be.
00:57:39
Speaker
I feel like because sometimes real big fish has too much money to record. You're like, I don't think he has all these bells. No.
00:57:51
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know about this part. good Was this around the same time as that pixie's cover? Were they just in their drum like drum machine era? Did he get a drum machine and he got fucking pumped? It's like six years later. well He's like, why? But I used this in forever. He found it in Nick's closet and looked like, oh, let's use the drum machine again. It's been six years.
00:58:18
Speaker
ah Weird cover you know what this cover makes me want to do you know what what I think we close our eyes but yeah makes you want to go to bed and grow my but yeah we could close or egg hey why is your is a little better Rob was trampling on me get troubled i troling on you I was I thought you were going in that direction and I got it wrong trump That's a Trump hard Trump hard Trump Alright, it's going up against the cover of the Edna's Goldfish song that appears on the 2009 covers album Fame Fortune Abornication. They did this song because people would confuse the two bands all the time. This is Veronica Sawyer. That's fun. Hey fuck you guys, we're just gonna do one of their other bands. We're gonna do one of the other songs.
00:59:25
Speaker
See, this is the kind of ska that's better. This is like... The original is also fangy. Yeah. This is just like a classic, like if you didn't know this was a cover, this would just sound like a good real big fish song. Their best one. Best one. It's no beer. Like this is a little more... This is a little more punk rock.
00:59:49
Speaker
This is more punk rock than a normal real big fish song. Okay, I know this sounds insane. It's not that summery.
01:00:00
Speaker
Like there's a- I know that sounds insane when- I feel like a regular person not listening to this bracket would be like that's fucking crazy but in comparison to how summery ass the other songs are, not that summery. Original song hate- The original song has no ska on it. Oh! From a ska band and his goldfish that was on their second record, Elements of Transition that didn't really have any ska on it.
01:00:26
Speaker
But it was a horn that led a lot of horns. So Robby Fish basically scot up a non-scot song by a ska band. Rescottified it. Rescott almost like put it back through the ska blender. Right. like You were used to listen to this song all the time. Yeah. yeah Fucking love Edna's goldfish. Yeah. Yeah. Big, big fan. So it's like they thought this cover was very tastefully done. It's like they took a de-alcoholized beer and then put the I'll call back into it. Yeah. It's a seltzer. so Yeah. So here we go. Three, two, one. Veronica Sawyer. Yeah. um That does it. I don't think, and one no big up no big upsets, I think.
01:01:10
Speaker
No, no big up no, I don't think so. I think people are going to be less mad. I shit on probably their favorite band a lot. But but I think I think what it's I think we're setting up some tough brackets in the future, like in rounds two and three. Yeah. But so here's what it's going to look like. So it's going to be the promise versus lion ass bitch.
01:01:31
Speaker
The Long Run vs. Boss DJ. Take On Me vs. We Hated It When Our Friends Become Successful. Monkey Man vs. Talking About A Revolution. And then in the second half of the bracket it's Unity vs. Stray Cat Strut. Kiss Me Deadly vs. Give It To Me. Hungry Like The Wolf vs. Another Day In Paradise. And Keep A Cool Head vs. Veronica Sawyer.
01:01:54
Speaker
So not bad. I think round two is still going to be pretty okay. I'll have some cases to make. yeah I'll have i some cases to make. Yeah, there's three or four brackets that are tough. Especially knowing who the guest is. i I am feeling like there might be some wrenches thrown in with our guest next next week. so Who's our guest next week? I'm pretty excited.
01:02:14
Speaker
Well, I will say when I close up the shop here. ah yeah So thanks for listening to

I will say his his email that he had responded back to me where it was basically the word equivalent of this motion. He was just rubbing his hands and ready. He's ready for it. He's ready. ready i've i've I've had some pretty crazy opinions.
01:04:07
Speaker
He's ready. The last episode is when I literally just went... a And honestly, i will the song sounded the same. I will say that is still to this day, one of our most popular episodes. People go back and listen to River Fish part two of Dev and Kay. It's a, it's a great listen. Wonderful wild ride. An all time classic. All time classic. Honestly, it's a CPSC classic where you're trying to strike gold points here. I think that's when I, I think that's when I broke from the pond when I like could not pretend like I couldn't be like kind to music. I didn't like anymore. I think that's when I was broken. was a turning point for us. I was like doing my listening. I was like, I can't do this. And so until next time, I'm a Saxel Rob. Smokey ass bitch, Celine. I'm Lil' Joey Christmas. In the mortal words of a band, Real Big Fish covered, I try to laugh at this ep hiding the tears in my eyes.
