On this episode, we're getting symbolic. It's steady as she goes, and we shout, Revolucion! On return to the Inland Empire. Voodoo voodoo we do? Fuck you! It's voodoo globecalls parte dos on Check Your Past, the scot gas.
00:00:36
Speaker
What up Checkerheads? This is Rob from Checker past. We're doing this episode out of order because we had a very short timeframe to record with our guests. So I'm going to throw it over to Bex and Duck from Joystick waiting in the airport to discuss Voodoo Glow Skulls. We are absolutely thrilled to introduce our guests. They are the vocals and saxophonists for New Orleans, Ska Punk band Joystick, whose new EP Dwell is streaming everywhere we are right now through Bad Time Records. Bex and Dux are here.
00:01:04
Speaker
yeah yeah little that's all i to say two names together never back So that implies that Bex is like multiple for what? Beck and ducks are here. Beck's name is multiple. That's fine. That's how you do it. It's like Brooks and Dunn. Bex Duck.
00:01:28
Speaker
o ah So um you are both currently in the airport right now. Walk us through it. How's the airport? So,

Travel Woes and Road Trips

00:01:37
Speaker
okay. So we, the joystick guys flew up to New Jersey on Friday. The U.S. just had like a massive ah outage, actually the whole world. Yeah, they give the whole world. Yeah, the whole world, yeah.
00:01:48
Speaker
With like CrowdStrike software and Microsoft and whatever so these guys were supposed to land in New Jersey Friday morning at like 9 30 And they didn't end up landing to like 1 o'clock almost 1 30 in the afternoon Glad that they made it. We're without Andy though, because he's still dealing with the residual wrath of things. So they like, he got to the airport. He drove me an hour and a half to New Orleans, got to the airport. They said, well, your flight's canceled ah to come up to New York to meet up with us here so we could all fly out together. But um yeah, we're here. we're We're excited. We're in our tour. We're Andy. We're tired. We're tired, but I don't know.
00:02:32
Speaker
um go be like I have a $25 margarita in my hand. This this is not worth $25, but. whoa listen twenty five Is it a double? No, it's not. hard fucking be Yeah. hey It's that New York Airport inflation, but now we got to take the train here from New Jersey. It was most of their first time. It was disgusting.
00:03:00
Speaker
yeah Well, there it is on record now. yeah i mean but Yeah. Well, you guys got caught up at security because some of y'all forgot to take your switches out of your bags.
00:03:12
Speaker
oh Electronics. I did that in Texas with my, with my tablet. And the lady was like, was totally giving me the gears and was just like super dry about it. And I thought she was like, actually giving me shit. And then she was like, no, just remember next time. I was like, Oh my God. but a I mean, I flew through security. I paid for that TSA pre-check so I can just like, I don't have to take my liquids. I have to take my shoes off. You don't have the shoe thing here.
00:03:43
Speaker
Yeah, we don't have the shoes man. You mean the shoe thing? We got to take your shoes off. Yeah, you do. I have to every time because like you, because you guys don't wear little boots. You don't have to take off sneakers. Anything that covers the ankle at all. You do have to take off. Oh yeah. any you that black you to take Yeah. High tops. You have to take off that exists too. I always have to take off my shoes.
00:04:02
Speaker
Did y'all fly to Connecticut? No. We flew to Ottawa and then drove to Connecticut. From Ottawa. Which was a seven hour drive and a three hour flight. I don't recommend going that way ever again, but it was a beautiful drive. We drove through the milk belt. Yeah, the milk belt.
00:04:20
Speaker
Yeah, so much ice cream. So we were told to do mall talk. What city is the giant mall in? It's in New Jersey. Chris has asked us to catch up on more mall talk. Yeah, because this is a drama happened with that mall, didn't it? Yeah, so since the last time I was here, I did bring cool Chris and our pal Dev, the Scott Morphsuit dude, to the American drink mall.
00:04:48
Speaker
Um, yeah, it was funny. Like I went to go pick up Chris from the airport and we went to a diner and then like we were on a road heading up towards Connecticut and he goes, whoa, what's that Ferris wheel in the distance? I said, Oh yeah, that's the American dream mall. That's the one that I talked about in the checkered past podcast. And he was like, like, I could see his eyes get all big. and like
00:05:12
Speaker
lit up so i was like and then i was like the widow go And he's like, do we have time? I said, dude, it's literally half a mile away. Yeah, of course we have time. um So we went. He saw this, the indoor ski slope. He got to study.
00:05:26
Speaker
feel like, yeah, it was cool. We got to see the ice rink where the hockey team had played, where the Metropolitan Refitters used to play. Classic hockey rink in malls. Yeah, we know. He's old, classic. yeah Yeah, it was crazy. There's a great picture of cool Chris just like standing in front of the window by the indoor ski slope where he's just like, he's got his signature like big goofy smile and like the peace sign up in the air.
00:05:50
Speaker
Like it was wholesome. yeah His signature big goofy smile. But yeah, apparently. It was this was like it met expectations. I think it defeated his expectations. That's not what I expected. He was real, real stoked about it. I would be. And they got balls in Texas, right? Like they got pretty big balls there. I mean. Not that big. Not American dream big. No, no.
00:06:19
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, it was like, it's one of the bigger malls. Like, I'm sure Mall of America is probably, you know, pretty similar. But American Dream though, like, it's nuts. It's wild. They're still like, they're still filling up stores. But other than that, you know, they've got it. got some interesting stores in there. I got bubble tea. I was very excited about that. Yes. What's your bubble tea game? What you're putting in there?
00:06:42
Speaker
I so usually I don't do the milk tea. I usually will do like a peach oolong tea or a peach green tea like and Okay, are you tapioca balls? Do you fuck with tapioca balls?
00:06:55
Speaker
Yeah, that's the way I'll do it. The lychee, I'm not like big on, but the tapioca. I'm a tapioca gal. Yeah, you gotta go tapioca. I double down on the milk tea and I make it so that it's almost like a milkshake. Like I turn it into a different culture's bubble tea. I mean, I like a good like frozen bubble tea too, like or like a bubble tea slush. Strawberry. Oh yes, strawberry is yours.
00:07:21
Speaker
Yeah, it's the best just one, a strawberry slushy bubble tea. Ooh, that sounds good. doesn sound good and soundsific yeah but a Sounds yummy.
00:07:34
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, we passed the tea place when we were at New York Penn Station after we took our first train and before we took our second train to the airport. I saw the bubble tea places. Ooh, I can mess that up right now, but I got a beer instead. The one thing we talked about, we almost recorded an episode last week.

Tattoo Tales and Humor

00:07:50
Speaker
And the one thing we were talking about before we were going to hit record was about tattoos. And now that Duck's here, I think the tattoo conversation has to go back in. Oh, yeah. We have to go back to tattoos. Yeah. We just talked about stupid tattoos. What's your most stupid tattoo, Duck? Um, one time we were on tour and this is when the band, one of the guys in another band we are touring with, he got my name tattooed on his butt with half a heart and his name is tattooed on his butt with other half a heart. So when we touch butts, it's like best, it's like a best friend necklace. That's fun.
00:08:27
Speaker
yeah but with buts How often do you get to touch butts and make it one? Not anymore. I don't think so being too well at the moment, unfortunately. No! No! He was a good dude. You're you're stuck with the beef right now.
00:08:51
Speaker
No one wants to be the St. Ann's. No one wants to be St. Ann's. You gotta be Bee Fry. Do you know what I'm talking about? No, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Okay, so if you have best friend necklaces, like because I had several, one says Bee Fry and the other one says St. Ann's. And you always want Bee Fry, it sucks being St. Ann's. It broke proper and I don't know why.
00:09:20
Speaker
hey
00:09:23
Speaker
All right. So you got bee fry, I think. I don't think the people in the airport appreciate me yelling about my ass. but ah what's it What's your tattoo philosophy? Like, are you, uh, I want to get the coolest tattoo? Are you, like, whatever is free? Uh, what's the, yeah. I have, like, beautiful picture realistic, photo realistic tattoos, and I have, like, stick and pokes. Like, I... Me too. It's nice to have a variety.
00:09:53
Speaker
but i feel like i've come But I feel like I've come around to enjoy the dumb, shitty ones more. oh yeah like like you get I when you show someone your cool, really like and expensive, nice tattoo you've waited forever, they're like, wow, that's really nice. But if you have like a really dumb, funny tattoo, it's like way more fun to engage with. What about you guys? Well, I have the stupid skanking Jar Jar Binks. And then i I don't know. Have you seen it, Duck? No, but this sounds incredible.
00:10:22
Speaker
The only people that have like clocked it are like tattoo artists. They're like, is that? turn big Why is, is he dancing? Why is he in a suit? What was it? I feel like there's, there's been like Skoska. I don't know. No, Jawskanks, J-A-H, J-A-H. And Rob? I'm tattoo free. Tattoo free. Tattoo free.
00:10:46
Speaker
Because of I'm lazy. Yeah, I got some dumb ones. I got some like cool cool guy skulls and shit. but I got some kind of dumb ones. Sublime. Sublime transtamp. Yeah, Joey was was done in earnest originally, I'm sure. Yeah, now it's in busted. So he's Joey has a legit, like pretty big transtamp of like the sublime sun, the crime into the ocean. Yeah, but like without the mushroom in the forehead, because I didn't do mushrooms.
00:11:12
Speaker
when I got it, when I was 17. You're like, I can't condone that man. I was just like, that's not my scene. Arianne is the one with the crazy, silly tattoos. Like, she's got a tattoo of our dog as a mermaid, our cat as an owl. She's got a lemon that looks like a vagina. Two vagina. Yeah, because her friend has the same tattoo on their inner thighs. She's got a tattoo of Jesus on her butt.
00:11:40
Speaker
and like the Buddy Christ from Dogma. yeah um She has got a tattoo of test Stephen Toast. but yeah it's awesome Yeah, that's a really good one. ah Yeah, she's got a lot of like ah pictures of that. I think the coolest tattoo she has is the Flux of Pink Indians one. That's like the all the arms we need and it's like two people hugging each other. Yeah.
00:12:05
Speaker
But then the rest of them are very crusty and then the rest of them pretty dumb pretty awesome. That was tattoo talk. oh but but all talk tattoo talk We got but i dont but like buy anything at the mall? Oh, yeah, that's a great question. I got a bubble tea and that was it. I didn't I didn't go. Okay. just That's good. Because you got Crocs last time you're at the mall and you're like a Crocs lady now. Oh yeah, I went to the Croc store in West Edmonton Mall, and I like went and I called and put a shoe on hold, and it's nuts. So there's apparently lineups all the time now. I stood in line. There's like a security guard, it's fucking like crazy in there. Kids, I think they're big with the kids. And so at the Croc store, they had like bins and bins of the giblets. And you I did have to be like, excuse me, I'm just looking. Excuse me, excuse me.
00:12:58
Speaker
get out get Yeah, so now I have the Mega Croc platform Crocs and I have a couple of gentlemen so people know my personality before they meet me. It's so funny you mentioned the gibbets for the Crocs because yeah, ah Flying Raccoon Soup made them as merch and they've been like selling them like crazy. I wish Andrew was here. Talk about it. Yeah. yeah yeah That's sweet. I need an FRS, Jimin. We'll have to have have Croc Chalk with him next time. Croc Chalk. Croc Chalk. Totally missed

Fashion and Shopping Trends

00:13:29
Speaker
that. And cool. Chris got Crocs. They look advanced. He's an odd croc. Honestly, Crocs are like, they're here to stay. They're not. Everyone's like, oh. And if them people are like, oh, what? You're wearing Crocs? I'm like, it's fashion, sweetie. Look at us.
00:13:40
Speaker
I have a pair of croc sandals in my luggage. They travel with me everywhere, but they're Taco Bell Crocs. Like Taco Bell Crocs. They're incredible. yeah let's talk Let's get into the timescotch scene. Let's make it happen.
00:14:02
Speaker
Hell yeah. Previously, check out this car guys. Joining me about the Budu Glow Skulls

The Voodoo Glow Skulls Journey

00:14:10
Speaker
again! Hooray! Budu Glow Skulls were formed in 1988 at Riverside by brothers Frank, Eddie, and Jorge Castellas along with buddy Jerry O'Neill to form a hardcore ska combo added a horn section in 1991 to mimic fishbone or the skeletons that included a trumpet, cornet, and a saxophone.
00:14:28
Speaker
released their debut album Who Is This Is in 1994 on Dr. Strange Records, garnering the attention of Brett Gerwitz of Epitaph, released the cult classic Fur May in 1995 on Epitaph in the same year as Time Mom, and was produced by Canada's Goo Goo Goo Garth.
00:14:45
Speaker
Spent 1996 on the road and featured in Biodome, Give Them the Boot, and Punk-O-Rama, released The Manic and Biodellos Locos in the summer of Ska with production by The Trout, who also produced Fury of the Aquabats, released Banguig Mafia 1998 production assistance from John Abilov, Oingo Boingo, that showed a more conventional pop punk influence, which brings us to the Willennium 2000, to continue our discussion on the voodoo blow skull, with trumpeter Joe McNally leading to work a day job,
00:15:13
Speaker
The lineup continued as is with the core 4 and 2-piece horn section of trombone and saxophone. With Band Geek Mafia proving to be an indelible hit despite its popular approach, the band decided to change things up again with the release of Symbolic. Once again on Epitaph and with label founder Greg Gerwitz producing the fourth huge huge name producer in a row, the band moved back off of Pop-Punk to explore more earthier tones such as funk, hip-hop, and heavy metal. It also had some typically smarmy monologuing from Mark of Gunnermouth and a guitar solo from The Reverend Horton Heatz.
00:15:49
Speaker
walk I was like, that has to be Reverend. Just the way the solo played out. I was like, that has to be the Reverend. The Reverend, here comes. And so we're talking about it. This is symbolic. Let's play the first track. ah We're back. So let's put it in. Yeah, of course we will.
00:16:09
Speaker
Now that you've said that that's the guy who got another fight, absolutely sounds like Martin Garble. We do ghost calls always seem to be a band that has a lot of music industry fun. Great.
00:16:30
Speaker
Joey, we're good. You like this one? Yeah. Fast. It's fast, I like it. It's like polka drumming. yeah Yeah, and the bass is like polka too. I love this song. This song is great.
00:16:50
Speaker
It's like, is wrote a scope dinosaur movie. Oh, oh. Oh,
00:17:10
Speaker
Oh, yeah, I put this part in, because this part's cool. Yeah, it's good. With the background singing? Yeah. It's like a metal song. Yeah. but
00:17:23
Speaker
me just like and more mark All right, let's talk about it symbolic. What do we think about this record? Over to our guests. Becks and ducks. Becks and ducks. Becks and ducks. So I'm not as familiar with symbolic as any of the earlier stuff. I don't know. This is one of the things, this is one of the albums that I'm like probably the least familiar with. Dude, it's fucking sick. It's a good album. yeah hat did It was like after, it was after like the big ska boom. And I think you can kind of tell because it seems like they kind of
00:17:59
Speaker
backed off from the, it seems more punk. It seems like, like this is kind of like an era of Voodooville skills in my opinion where they kind of like came away from Ska a little bit. You know, a lot of the songs on these albums are like just straight up like punk songs. This song is awesome. I normally don't like talking in the in the songs, but I didn't know it was the guy from Gutter, Guttermouth. So is that what you said?
00:18:25
Speaker
Yeah, the guy from Guilherme out who also did the same kind of talk singing thing in the short music for short music. Yeah, Don is Don's car water. Yeah. He likes to do that. He's a funny guy. He's also from Riverside. So I think it's buddies. I just think it's like, man, my opinion about like songs, like when people are like doing jokes on albums, it's like funny the first time you hear it. And then every time after that, it's just like, okay, you know, like it's All those 2090s hip-hop sketches. but It's funny, but I mean this song is awesome. The hook is great.
00:19:04
Speaker
The guitar tone is great. I mean I just think it's a good album. I think that's Brett producing, like really made it sound. This is the most epitaph sounding record like aside from like the rapping that but they've ever done considering they've been on epitaph for the last like whatever five, six years at this point. Yeah. it's And yeah, it has that skate-y kind of feel to it.
00:19:28
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know, Joey, do you feel that? Yeah, for sure. Epitaph records at this time definitely had a distinctive sound. They had like two or three producers, Brett Grewitz being one of them, that produced. And they all kind of sounded like, I love that shit. That's like where that was my punk stuff growing up. But like going back, like those two or three producers all kind of sounded kind of samey, but in a good way, like I think it helped develop the label sound, right? Because yeah Epitaph bands sounded like Epitaph bands.
00:19:58
Speaker
So yeah, like it's a good sound to embrace. Because sorry, what year was this? 2000. Yeah. You feel pretty badass in the year 2000 listening to this. Hell yeah. I like the way the the album starts off, that guitar, that driving guitars is so good.
00:20:14
Speaker
its ah This album go is pretty hard. It's like hard as fuck. I think it's like really good for, my opinion, is it's really good for about two thirds of it and then it kind of has a bit of a side beat for all of them. Where it kind of starts to falter off in the last like four or five songs. I started to lose the tracks a little bit. But it's like, the first like four or five songs are just like really, really awesome. Like it starts really strong. Yeah, drop yeah the drop in, let's play that. Let's play that Joey. It's right there. yeah q The cue, Joey! The cue! The
00:21:15
Speaker
This wrap looks good.
00:21:22
Speaker
It's so heavy. And that little leg. This is fun. Two errors in one section at this time.
00:21:35
Speaker
It's like full on like a rap flow. yeah yeah I like it though. I like rap. It's a full on rap flow. To be fair, some of the early hardcore songs, if you slow them down, they're pretty much raps last year. Like you just spits a lot of stuff really fast and then it all rhymes. so When you think about the other music happening in the year 2000, it like makes a lot of sense. Yeah, it sounds really LA.
00:21:56
Speaker
It sounds very early. I mean, there they sound really early, but this album, like with all the kind of additional, like that kind of little bit of like a funk metal thing going on and the rapping and like and all of that stuff. Well, that thing feels like... It had Rob must have been yelling at this time. Very much so. The same thing makes it sound like a Tupac song. That's like what I was almost thinking about, like a G-Funk. Okay, Bex and Duck.
00:22:23
Speaker
you know Yeah. What do you think? There's something about the synth when it pops into that that I'm just like, what is this? Like, I mean, here's the thing, like, maybe I'm like telling my age a little bit here, but like, I love like the pop punk emo synth of like the early 2000s. Like that's the elk emo in me.
00:22:42
Speaker
So like revisiting Voodoo, having that kind of like buzzy synth in there with their song, I'm like, what? what yeah you know it's It's foreign to me, at least for the genre, but I'm like, okay, you know what? It's something. And then like remembering it was the early 2000s, I'm like, oh, okay, that makes sense. I feel like everything at that point was trying to go like futuristic. Everyone thought- You're in a new millennium. Yeah.
00:23:08
Speaker
I think, I think they were symbolic is a good album to listen to, but it definitely was a victim of trying to be modern

Musical Influences and Inspirations

00:23:17
Speaker
of the time. I feel like you guys don't like dropping it enough. I love dropping. You don't like it enough. That was one of my favorite voodoo gold songs growing up, Jeff. Musical Therapy is my favorite song in the album. And honestly, like that song is kind of like,
00:23:35
Speaker
a major like and like it's weird to say a single song is such an influence but like i love that song so much i've like i i would say it's like an influence on joystick honestly that's oh damn that song fucking rips dude that's right we have uh i didn't have musical therapy but i do have will make me do it the song that started joisted rob doesn't you can't read mine you can't read mine
00:24:03
Speaker
but will make me do it a very strong but that's the right to i think this is also a love focusism This is like a new metal song. Hold on.
00:24:26
Speaker
Whoa. There you go. Yeah. Sling, turn her hat side. Yeah, backwards. Her leather part of the game's in baseball. Yeah, it's not really working. No, it looks like a dangle in a good apple.
00:24:43
Speaker
So much rapping. So much. And then there's this same thing again. Same thing again. But you're mid-live.
00:24:57
Speaker
That timing is so good too. The chorus to the first is very good. Oh no, that's like my different song. I mean, I feel like that's still very joystick-coded though. I know it was different. Devil made me do it? Yeah, I don't know. There's just something about it. I was like, okay, I can definitely see some joystick elements in there. I mean, BootyBosco is one of my favorite bands. It all comes together.
00:25:21
Speaker
Alright, let's move along. ah The death of Scott finally came from Voodoo Glow's calls and the album was not nearly as successful as the three prior hits and they left Epitaph for a new label.

Label Conflicts and Independence

00:25:32
Speaker
Here's what Jorge said. As far as Epitaph goes, I think they just stopped caring about us. The last few records we put out they didn't seem interested in. They seemed to kind of ignore them and not push them in or advertise. I think a lot of that stemmed from personal problems with the guy who actually ran the label, not Brett.
00:25:48
Speaker
Uh, the guy played a piano and puts out these weird fucking classical albums. We had some things to say to him and he didn't like it. and Basically we had a problem because they weren't pushing our albums at all. We got on tour to support it. And after a month on the road, we collected a huge stack of magazines from every city we played in. There wasn't a single thing in any of them. We really didn't appreciate that. We let them know. Um, so yeah, basically epitaph sort of.
00:26:14
Speaker
And a 2000 epitaph would have gone completely the other way with their punk repertoire. So I can absolutely seeing voodoo glow skulls not fitting with the direction they were going. in Yeah, that was right when they started when they started saying we were like emo adjacent stuff and also did that weird rap stuff members member your early 2000s rap stuff that came out on epitaph.
00:26:37
Speaker
say Francis was on epitaph. They had a handful of good artists, but a lot of it was I didn't understand what they were doing as a label at the time. As a fan of the label, I was like, these aren't even like that like it wasn't like they were picking rap artists that like fit in with this group of bands because they did warp tour together or skate next game stuff together like they didn't do any of that there's like there's punk adjacent like rap artists yeah 100 that's not what they did they just they were drawing weird stuff it was a weird decision but whatever um
00:27:13
Speaker
All right, so their first thought was to go fully indeed. And with their experience running a record shop, they formed El Pocho Records. Over the course of the next year, they set out to make it to make a go of it and issued five new releases, including a label comp and a re-release of their potty training years compilation. ah They had bands called Still Dreadful, Sixth Sense, Backside and the Family Dog, all from Riverside, California. ah They existed for 365 days and unfolded. Whoa.
00:27:40
Speaker
ah So labels, she's the On top of that, there was a bit of bidding war to sign voodoo blow skulls. A couple major labels threw up their hands, but in the early 2000s, the offers were simply not that good, and the band wanted to stay indie.
00:27:55
Speaker
They were interested in American records, ah but the feeling was not mutual. Interestingly, they were offered a metal label Roadrunner, but declined them. Interesting. They were courted over to the infamous Victory Label that also made a name by issue in classic Catch-22 records like Be Night, Sand Alone in the Crowd. i They weren't that Victory Records yet. Tell All Your Friends Didn't Come Up Till 2002.
00:28:21
Speaker
and they were famous they were still famously stingy with their purse strings, so the band had to self release the follow up. Steady as she goes, feels like an attempt to fit in with the victory stable with a massive de-emphasis on horns, huge focus on heaviness and a thicker guitar tone, punchier and shorter, but the stylistic change was not to everyone's taste at the time.
00:28:40
Speaker
It has a reputation that most Legacy Ska bands had, that they were fleeing away from Ska, but its reputation has improved drastically since 2002 when it was more of a

Stylistic Shifts and Challenges

mixed reaction. Let's play, this is how I did this. I just picked the first three songs out of this record because it's like pretty much a fucking fantastic record project. You're gonna play the song. The song. The song. Yeah. And then we'll chat. Yeah.
00:29:09
Speaker
Lots to talk about. The studio she goes. Lots to chat about. What's he here? I can put her shoes back. I'll just throw it somewhere.
00:29:29
Speaker
It's so fun to say!
00:29:37
Speaker
I can tell about those palm beads. Great. I'm loving it. a Big try. Like a testament record. Great. Yeah. We must get so many middle fingers at them during the show. Fuck you. Fuck you. Yes, fuck you, too. That's right. That's part.
00:30:03
Speaker
And that really kicks off. I don't like solo, it's kind of just jamming around for a bit. All right, Beck and Dux. Let's talk about Steady as She Goes. What do you think? It's one of their best albums. It's incredible. 100%. I mean, like, even the track is so good. Like, Steady as She Goes is super, super good. Is this one that Dia de los Mueros is on? I forget.
00:30:29
Speaker
I don't know. I think that's on the next one. I think it's on the next one. It's on the GCN, right? boy like yeah and Spoiler Spoiler alert. Yeah, well, you know. Now a song that's been out for how long? No, this one's good too, but you know, it's weird. Like I really, I really did fall off with Voodoo. um Like in the 2000s, I don't know, at least in terms of like the 2000s listening, I was like, oh, well, you know, I'll listen to the occasional.
00:30:56
Speaker
Every song in this album is a banger. The horns are just like killing it the whole time. ah but They're just like relentless and they just punch you in the face. I mean this this album just makes me want to like get in a fight in the best way. Start swinging. They're both swinging. i'm They're both in swinging mode now. I got to agree. This is probably all I, I kind of listened to two chunks of the law skills back in the day, the earlier stuff that you got from like the early epitaph, like comps and stuff. So it would have been the first couple of records. And then this album was like a staple in the house when I lived with ah like a bunch of bros. And every, when I was listening through this, I was playing Tetris and I was like, every fucking song is banger after banger. Obviously blue gold skills isn't only for the boys, but blue gold skills is like kind of for the boys.
00:31:53
Speaker
It's a little bit like Saturday Night. I feel like it has kind of like dude energy. Like, like, like, like dude energy, you know? Sometimes. A little bit. I like that dude energy. I like it. I'm just saying. It's a little bit for the boys. Hard not to kind of agree. Saturday Night's for the boys. For the Blowskills for the boys.
00:32:16
Speaker
What I like about this record is that all the songs are like two, two and a half minutes long. It's fucking fast. Yeah, perfect timing. Yeah, get in, get out, make a statement. There's nothing to be said after three minutes. no No, you already said there's one for the road. Move on to the next song. ah Let's play Steady as She Goes. We have that one queued up. Still rapping. Just like.
00:32:50
Speaker
We lived after you and you looked after we We flew your flag and I said to you We're like a bride and you just pick good, yeah! Double kicks. Yeah, always double kicks. What? Double kicks.
00:33:08
Speaker
Oh yeah, and I believe, uh, Dan in our Discord said that the album coming up... Oh, Johnny. Oh wait, hold on, hold on, hold on. Okay, he's gonna dance. I gotta say this to a guest.
00:33:23
Speaker
The riffs? Like riffs, you know? jason said it's Like a thrash metal record, like like I'm just writing riffs. Yeah. I'm going steady. I'm going steady. This is like the most hardcore riffs. Steady as you go, because I'm all glorbed up. I'm listening to too much glor. Do you know glor? No. It's like hard Spongebob rap. I'll show you that. Okay, sounds good.
00:33:51
Speaker
Okay, one thing I gotta say is somebody in our Discord, I think it was Johnny, said that the album art to Steady as She Goes looks like loading screen to Crash Bandicoot. Ha, so good. Comment. I don't get it. Like shitty M64 PlayStation graphics. Like PlayStation 1. Shitty early 2000 PlayStation 1, like Tomb Raider konbu graphics.
00:34:17
Speaker
like angel zoi yeah Maybe I have a soft spot for that. Cause I kind of like, I love that kind of thing. Like Crash Bandicoot is one of my favorite video games and like he's called Parappa the Rapper. Oh my God. what a great Anyway. correct so it's a comp He it like an insult, but it was really a compliment. yes Two people, but also rap flows, Parappa the Rapper. Yeah. Kick.
00:34:42
Speaker
punch. It's all the night. If you want to test me, I'm sure you're fine. And so on and so forth. You got it. Yeah. Barely a verse. Yeah. Two bars. Two bars. Two bars. do That's what they call it. Yep. Two bars. That makes me laugh. What else you want to talk about with Steady As She Goes? Man, this record's so good though. Oh, um I mean, I think that album, that that that song fucking rules. i If you're talking about Steady As She Goes,
00:35:10
Speaker
I like the way Eddie and Frank's vocals, they they sound so similar, but I like the way they like play off each other. It's fucking good. I usually don't like pirate songs, like Mad Caddies do a lot, but this song fucking rips. Not a like a bass is good. ah Rat traps, it just hits with that with those pauses in the song where it's like,
00:35:34
Speaker
tra i couldn't do Oh yeah, it's so cool. Yeah, yeah I love it. it's And they're like the only, aside from Cash 22 and Streetlight, they're the only other Scott Band on Victory, like ever, I'm pretty sure. They didn't seem to have the same drama that everybody everybody else seemed to have, which I'm like, good for them. I know eventually they leave Victory, but it's not for a while. They actually stay on the label for quite a while. So I don't know how all that played out, but ah yeah, the last song I had is Natalin Kabeza, so let's give that a go.
00:36:10
Speaker
It does give me, I like feel like I'm a little bit bro-ey right now. I feel like I'm a little bro-ey. This is getting the less bro-ey, but i had I'm shaking the bro off and with this song. I feel like that was all hyped up in April. But no, see, it's back. Yeah, no, it's back. It's too rough. I'm washing. You're washing. I'm washing here. I bet you the pickles crazy good ways. Yeah, you've been in there.
00:36:38
Speaker
I don't remember 90% of shows I've been to. How many times have you seen beautiful? One? Twice. When? Just a second time. You saw them twice, yo.
00:36:48
Speaker
I've seen one of those, those twice. Okay, we'll name both times. They were both in Edmonton. I enjoyed myself. Yes, clearly. All right, moving on. Jorge said this about that record. We did everything ourselves this time around. It was the first time we done it that way. Basically, the main reason we did it was to save money because we didn't really have the bucks to pay a studio and producer.
00:37:10
Speaker
plus we have our own studio we always thought that that was a only we know exactly what we want to sound like and what we should sound like we just decided why not I mean we know how to run all the equipment we've recorded enough to know the routine so like I said we said fuck it we'll just do it ourselves and see how it comes out.
00:37:25
Speaker
So yeah, this started the trend of them self-producing stuff. Up until that point, they were you know only dealing with top shelf mainline producers. So by 2004, they were ready to hit the studio again and basically rinsed and repeated the process of Steady As She Goes with the same self-production, same label, same studio.

Return to Roots and Political Themes

00:37:41
Speaker
This raised red flags for some, but the final product, Adissione Tradissione Revolucione, was far better received as they reintegrated the scone horns, finding a mix of the harder edge of steady with the freewheeling scone core of the epitaph years. It also showed the band continuing to explore more and more political songs along with their party songs. So that's how we're gonna end this episode talking about Adissione. And so let's start by playing the the song. Actually, we should play track eight. This is the one everyone knows from it. Dee Dee don't like stuff. Yeah, this is the the famous one.
00:38:18
Speaker
We needed the anthem for the person who doesn't like Scott. I think he came in on the second part of the verse.
00:38:34
Speaker
As a rhyme of alcohol? Yeah, that's something else.
00:38:50
Speaker
This is not a political song. So like, a little slowed down, but it was pretty fun. Yeah.
00:39:06
Speaker
I feel like ska music isn't like hard cocaine energy, you know? No. So I think it's need energy yeah and think it's funny that like, You know, at the time, Steady kind of was like, oh, they don't do enough Ska. And I just the owner was like, oh, they did more Ska getting hey, hooray. But now we're like 20 years later and people are like, actually Steady as She Goes is the superior record. they have It has actually like kind of flipped the overall life. But it didn't do super well? not Well, neither of them did really well for Victory. Like Victory wasn't like pushing a big Ska agenda, I would say.
00:39:39
Speaker
But Duck, how do you feel about Adision, the 2004 record? This album's awesome, too. Actually, I think... Stevie Don't Like Scott is one of the weaker songs on the album. I don't like Ghetto Blaster. I like the title track. Yeah, i think they're I just think those are good. I like that they use the Fox Work Orange quote to like sort out the album.
00:40:08
Speaker
and I just think, I mean, always like the heavier stuff anyway. So yeah, and I think the title track is incredible. GhettoBuster is incredible. GhettoBuster still. Even though like God is good though.
00:40:21
Speaker
it's a standup they still play it live all the time like every time i go to see them i do or remember seeing them playing it live yeah at least once the production on this album is my favorite yeah i think the production on this album fucking rips the guitars are like nice and thick the horns sound really good but it's like um um the drums sound fantastic yeah same they're insane It's the best, I think it's the best drums on any of their albums. For some reason I thought you were just about to be like, air drum. I thought you were just about to be like, they're insane, they're insane, like this. Just go full animal.
00:41:01
Speaker
yeah that's ah it's a good joe joe youre You're talking about, like, how one sounded like they're trying to make a metal record. The next one. Oh, this is the one after? Yeah, we were originally thinking about doing four records, so we listened to four records, and I found the one after this one is... Oh, okay, so we gotta save the thought for next time. This is where you got a time crunch. We can get into it. I'll listen to it again. You'll listen to it again? Yeah, so that's California street music. Yeah. Yeah. Um... Well, let's listen to like... Go ahead. I was gonna say, I don't really care for the Guns N' Roses cover song.
00:41:33
Speaker
but no that's real bad the last of problem really The last couple of albums all ended with cover songs, I think, right? Well, they haven't done a cover at the end. They've done a cover on their album since Fermé. They've always had a cover. So they did Charlie Brown, they did Feliz Navidad. Yeah. And that's from... But Low Red Riding Hood. The Riding Hood was my favorite. Symbolic had, no, I Shot the Sheriff, but because it's a Bob Marley song, it's they can't stream it. real bad.
00:42:04
Speaker
Oh, really? ah did Yeah, so because the Marley estate is highly litigious. Fun fact, the only marley straight Marley cover you can find was the sponge cover of No Woman, No Cry. Which is really weird, yeah. Because they actually went out and got permission, yeah. DJ Callen did that ah Bob Marley song on that. No, don't do that.
00:42:27
Speaker
bad as a bad
00:42:34
Speaker
uh let's listen to we represent first before we go to the next one uh yeah because this one's more like a punk song and i thought that was a fun thing to do yeah we like punk songs here and it's a political song yeah they don't like their wallets no
00:43:02
Speaker
Oh, this would have been like Bush time. Yeah. attack Real, real heavy Bush time. Yeah. 2004. Yeah. Yeah. Heavy Bush time. Heavy. Sounds gross.
00:43:15
Speaker
I find his like kind of like singing like a little hard to listen to when he just had a veil on the note. You know, he's like not as charming as when Brody doesn't.
00:43:34
Speaker
I mean, no one knows more about yelling to get to a note instead of actually being able to sing it, but this is it, though. Oh, I put the guitar solo in there. That's fine. Because everyone gets mad because they can cut it off. I cut off solos. I just had to leave in. so And it's not even a horn solo. Solo's a solo. Oops.
00:44:00
Speaker
What I will say is that voodoo gold skulls is for the boys but it's also for the rockabilly. There is always rockabilly people in the voodoo gold skull show and they love Little Red Riding Hood. I remember that being big in the rockabilly. The venn diagram is pinstripe painting. That's the thing. Pinstripe painting. And Dia de los Muertos, the rockabilly is loved too.
00:44:22
Speaker
appropriate because that not down what i wanted All right. Well, I think it's, uh, maybe this is where we should, uh, fold her out and we're going to get back for a small bit of goals on another date, but, uh, Bex and Doug, thanks for joining us. Yeah. Amazing. so yeah Thank you for being on the show. We'll let you catch your flight and we'll have you on again.
00:44:47
Speaker
catchlights now

00:46:39
Speaker
And I'll have to think about the fourth one. The tiramisu is like number one by a long shot. What's your takes? Betty Crocker mix, chocolate cake, chocolate icing, sprinkles. My back hurts, I have to be pressed. Okay. and ah number Number one, ah chocolate deep and delicious. Number two, marble deep and delicious. Number three, vanilla deep and delicious. My dad got resurrected into your body.
00:47:05

I'm happy. I don't care if it's not super sugary stuff or like fancy, not that sugary stuff. I just like cake a lot. I'm not a huge cake mom. I like cake. Give me cake.
00:47:24
Speaker
We're eating like sour candies. I take a sour, I take a single sour candy over a piece of cake. Sour candy is supposed to be going to get a little angry. Actually, it is economical to pick up where we left off. Yeah, let's do that.
00:47:48
Speaker
what's in the news oh yeah A lot of stuff, we got a lot of in the news. yeah ah First in the news, who got blue screened? I did not get raising my blue screened. I ah got blue screened real bad. 00:48:18
Speaker
cybersecurity company CrowdStrike forced an update to all of its vendors and crunched their PCs because they put in a wonky line of code. It wasn't even a hacker, like incompetent. Everyone's worried about hackers like stealing personal data or whatever. No, the company is hired to protect your personal data.
00:48:43
Speaker

That'll be the next fucking thing. Yeah. Fair enough. what else is in the news and certain newspaper thing that today, Joe Biden has decided to step down. It's so good. It's so Joe.
00:49:39
Speaker

This is going to be the most irrelevant. yeahable or remember jack black and kyle bason know People are already forgetting about the Trump shooting.
00:51:04
Speaker
ah we wasn moved also So the one thing that we were talking about and the thing that drives me crazy is just the hamming up of just having this big fucking gods on the side of his head like remember remember how I got shot on the side of the head like there's that zone bleeding there's just like a like a clean piece of gods just to show everybody. And also all the weird old people also doing that in solidarity. In solidarity. If they did hit the cartilage, I will say it does need to be a little more covered for structure. I'm not pro-drug, I'm just saying. I did, because it's a little bit of being pro-drug. For being worried about his cartilage. I just think that I think ear healing is more difficult than giving credit for.
00:51:53
Speaker
and damaging cartilage is a tricky thing. For real though, like as a 30 year old, yeah, ear healing is a big deal. Dude's old as fuck, how much longer he's going to be using that ear? Like he can scratch and get that bad boy, it's fine. I just don't understand why he's like been whatever indicted for a bunch of stuff he's able to. And they're just like, no, yeah, keep on going dude, it's fine. up All right, this was this was the news. yeah Well, you've already listened to the time, Scott Sheen. So we're going to play a game. This game is called, um I just called this the mascot game. That's what I called it. I did a song. Should I do it? Yeah. I don't remember the melody that happened, which is the problem. It wasn't a cover. trail like oh that is you only remember half of the bill off yeah like that's all It's now I really want you to do it.
00:52:49
Speaker
Mascots are all over town. We're jumping from that old pile upside down. Mascots, by a merchant people, he is like an oversized tee that goes past your knees. And then his boy, we're more simple than van. We should stop soon before he gets out of hand. But dang, it already did. Mascots, just give us your wallet a squeeze. That's a hot cop song from arrested to build up. No, that's funny. That's great. So in this game, we'll do a wrap up. Thank you. You know what? That's a good deal.
00:53:19
Speaker
Yeah, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh, we're uh,
00:53:35
Speaker
buzz in with your name or scar buzz get right get a point and around get doned forget Yeah. You understand? Yeah, it's an easy one. This is this is rapid fire. This is where Celine shines. Yeah, so what? I'm just, I'm guessing mascots. No, I'm in the mascot. I guess what it is. Okay. Yeah. Eddie the head. Oh, Celine. Yeah. Fucking Iron Maiden. Yes. Yes. Speaker

Is there a point because of- Give me .5. Oh, like .5. Yeah. You wouldn't- It's short. Murray. So Lynn, Chris Murray.
00:55:08
Speaker
to When you find out who this really is, you'll be like, that's the hilarious thing to say. I get so old. Murray. I want it to be like a really, like really metal something. It's the snake. So uncannable work. The snake? Less metal, but still really metal. I'm gonna, um I know this isn't the answer now, but the snake off of the black album.
00:55:32
Speaker
Selene, what's that great old film? Who did this? The Devil's Black, no. Oh, deal. Deal, yes. Murray? Murray's the devil. Oh, the devil that he. Yeah. Like, is it the same devil? Oh, is that work? Yeah. Oh, I didn't know. I didn't know. Murray. Yeah. Okay. Murray the devil. Okay. Roy. God, Selene, Mario Kart. Yeah, no. Gosh, no, that's all Roy. It's all.
00:56:01
Speaker
I don't know who Lori is. Yeah, I don't know who Lori is. From the Children of Odom. No. That's the Grim Reaper that's on all her artwork. His name is Roy. The Bear. The the Bear. We're not in Metal territory anymore, so get away from Metal. The Bear. Metal has a lot of mascots, though. Yeah, yeah. Oh, this sounds familiar. Yeah. Radiohead. Oh. Their mascot's name is The Bear. No, I had no idea. I don't even know what their mascot was saying. No idea. The Dropout Bear.
00:56:30
Speaker
Oh, uh, Joey. yeah onnu Yes. Algy the pig. Now I'm not. Pig. Yeah. That's a pig as a mascot. What's the band that's saying three little things? Go for it. Well, I don't mind what they're called. That band is Green Jello. Yeah. Green Jelly. Green Jelly. No, because it has the one thing over the line.
00:56:56
Speaker
It's Jello. That's how they got around it. Oh. Yeah. Because they wanted to call themselves Green Jello, but it was like a copyright infringement. So they changed the spelling, but it's still Green Jello. And the pig is Pink yes yeah big Floyd. Pink Floyd is nice and done. Blue Dog. Oh, that's good. Joey is the one. Yes. Yes. Yeah. ah Dogs the dog. I'm like not doing them out.
00:57:21
Speaker
This dog's so good. Blue Dog's the blind. Dog's the dog. Dog's the... Man, it's got a dog. It's got a ball on its nose on the cover. I don't know. Died in a car accident, tragically. The dog? Yeah, and the lead singer, famously at the same time. I'm just like, getting my friends. Snark! Snark! Snark, yeah, yeah, yeah. Snoop Dog. Selene, Snoop Dog. Ah, you got it.
00:57:50
Speaker
buffalo man but ah Buffalo Man. Yeah, I don't know. You're doing so good for someone. I know, but like your hands, you should've had him. Jamiroquai. Oh, I've been waiting. I don't know. Buffalo Man is Jamiroquai's mask. I don't know. Look at us. Like, we're the crazy ones. I know. Jamiroquai is popular. Like, I don't know. If I was asking you this out of context, no research, would you know Buffalo man. that Buffalo Man is a... Yes, because it's on every one Buffalo man? Yeah. of his covers is a little Buffalo Man. I don't know. I don't think you think of it. I'm going to test it.
00:58:23
Speaker
I'm going to do a game and I'm going to ask the question. It's happened before and I've done fine. The skanking man. So it's a special? No. skank? Oh, ah Joey Circle Chicks. Yes. so Walt Jabs Go. When she was like, you moved your eye. that does What is Walt Jabs Go? Why do I know it? I don't know it. What is Walt Jabs Go? Joey, you want to say it?
00:58:54
