tommy cresta: So as I was going to say before we hit record, so I was yesterday, I was staying up for my brother to get home. Had to make sure he got home safely, make sure the house was all locked up.
tommy cresta: But I was really tired because I, so Sam was over and I, she left at like five the other day. And I, like we fell asleep and I woke up and I was like, okay, time to go back to bed. But then the film the game was starting with the Dodgers and Cubs at 6-11 in the morning.
tommy cresta: i was like, gotta stay up, put some bets down, show you Atani.
Ryan: yeah
tommy cresta: Watched the game. So I was really tired. I like, you know what? I want good night's sleep. was like, I'm going to go take a melatonin gummy. So I went up and I saw the extra strength ones. And i was like, okay.
tommy cresta: So I can take two. Maybe I can take three.
Ryan: Wait, you did this at like 6 a.m. you took a melatonin?
tommy cresta: No, no, no, no.
Ryan: and
tommy cresta: This is when going to bed.
Ryan: Or the next night?
tommy cresta: When I was going to bed yet last night.
Ryan: Okay. All right.
tommy cresta: was going to take three of the extra strength melatonin gummies.
Ryan: I going to say it.
tommy cresta: And just sleep like a baby.
Ryan: Three? What's your problem?
tommy cresta: Dude, I was. Dude, I had some wild dreams last night. I had a dream that Daredevil beat me up. It was terrifying. yeah do you know how embarrassing it when you know it's a blind guy beating you up?
tommy cresta: I did not.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: I felt very incapable. I mean, he wasn't just like fighting me, beating me up, and then letting me go. He had me against the wall and just hit me with the baton thing over and over again. It felt like an eternity.
tommy cresta: And I finally thought I got away and I was walking like away, like stumbling. And this dude just dropped out the sky and just from the top rope punched me and I hit my face on the ground. I woke up.
Ryan: You probably deserved it.
tommy cresta: it was like, dude, it was in it was a nightmare.
Ryan: I don't know what you did, but...
tommy cresta: I looked up and just saw Daredo flying down on top of me.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: But yeah, that's how that's how my night went.
Ryan: So what did you do to deserve that?
tommy cresta: I have no idea. The dream started.
Ryan: What crimes did you can commit?
tommy cresta: i was walking, passing an alleyway, and he just swung in and kicked me into the alleyway and started beating my ass. and Maybe I jaywalked.
Ryan: don't know.
tommy cresta: I don't know what I did wrong. But he...

tommy cresta: i was like, please, I believe in God.

tommy cresta: This is justice. But welcome everyone back to the podcast. We're here to review Daredevil episodes 1, 2, 3, and 4. And before we get into that, like every episode, Ryan, how you doing?
Ryan: It's still tired somehow.
Ryan: It's 1214. It's noon.
Ryan: i don't know I didn't sleep well last night.
tommy cresta: Really? Should have taken melatonin extra strength.
Ryan: No, I don't know why. yeah I should have taken like five of them and just died.
tommy cresta: Should have fought Daredevil with me.
Ryan: Do you think if we take the same dose of melatonin, we can like link dreams, be in the same dreams together?
tommy cresta: Dude, that would be it would be awesome if you could like link up with your friend co-op in Dreams.
Ryan: That's... Yeah.
tommy cresta: And just co-op on adventures.
Ryan: yeah
tommy cresta: But yeah, how was your birthday?
Ryan: It's fine.

Ryan: It was perfect. It was just nothing happened. It was just relaxing.
tommy cresta: Did you get any good gifts?
Ryan: Just chilled out. I just got money. It was perfect.

tommy cresta: um But yeah, Daredevil. We got our first four episodes so far. It debuted with two of them. And yeah, so far it's being pretty well received across everything.
tommy cresta: It's got an 8.7 out of out of 5 on Vulture.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: hate Vulture.
Ryan: the fuck is Vulture?
tommy cresta: It's like the magazine company. They're like ah variety, but not as big.
Ryan: ah
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: um and then Oh my god, Rotten Tomatoes.
Ryan: Gotcha.
tommy cresta: then Rotten Tomatoes has an 87% critic score with an 81 audience. Oh, I gotta go to season one though for details because some reason they don't just have it all there.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: The critic consensus is resurrecting Charlie Cox's Daredevil with his virtues intact, namely Vincent D'Onofrio as his terrifying adversary born against an ambitious and at times and ungainly crime saga that marks a mature tonal shift for the MCU.
tommy cresta: Definitely a tonal shift from everything else we out of this universe.
Ryan: Yeah, for sure.
Ryan: Yeah. even Even just saying like, oh it's rated r it's you know It doesn't feel super rated R so far. I think we're goingnna we're going to get there eventually with Muse coming in.
Ryan: um But it's just like like you said, just the tone of it. Not even just – it just feels different. It feels like Daredevil still, which is great.
tommy cresta: Yeah, I, I said my, I had my notes because I really only had things, bad things to say about the first episode. It was like where all of my problems lied. So far, I really liked two, I liked three, and I really liked four.
Ryan: What?
tommy cresta: I really liked the end of four.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: um So it opens up with, there's going to be spoilers just so everyone knows if you're listening. This episode came out, we're getting right into this.
Ryan: Yeah, we're getting right into it, dude. We're getting right into it.
tommy cresta: So Thanos came to that hole and just snapped.
Ryan: When Thanos came through, just molly whop foggy.
tommy cresta: and Charlie Cox he fixed Charlie Cox's blindness is pretty cool Nate lost it again who was kind of unfair but um yeah it starts off with a nice like one take with daredevil well they're at a bar foggy Karen daredevil on that and eventually we find out the foggy's been holding out one of their guys keeping them safe and bullseye shows up starts causing chaos
Ryan: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
tommy cresta: Dicing people up with knives. Pool balls. Whatever this man can get his hands on. Dude was a menace.
Ryan: There was a menace.
tommy cresta: And it was. I. Someone called me. My phone fell.
Ryan: That's great.
tommy cresta: um
Ryan: Do you need to take it?
tommy cresta: No.
Ryan: Okay.
tommy cresta: It was a potential spam.
Ryan: Now perfect.
tommy cresta: And yeah. I thought the episode. i was excited to see Bullseye. As soon as they showed the symbol in his hand. When he's fixing the light bulb. But all in all, I felt like this the fight was kind of lackluster until it got into the apartment.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: Which i I don't know. Did they overlay two scenes together? Is that why it looks like that?
Ryan: I don't know. I mean, it i think everybody kind of agreed. Like, it was a little glossy. The CGI wasn't the best. But I think, like, as far as the choreography goes, it still kept that, like, Daredevil feeling. Like...
Ryan: He's very acrobatic and just throws fucking hands. But he also, when he gets hit, he gets hit. Like, he doesn't just tank shots. He's like, oh, fuck. He falls over and shit. It's great. But the CGI in it definitely wasn't the best.
Ryan: it I think you might be right. Like, they they filmed the fight scene and then they filmed, like, everybody else running out of the building into the building separately and just kind of overlaid them. That could be what happened. But I do agree that once they got, like, up the stairs in the building, then it got it really good.
tommy cresta: Yeah, like found his like stride.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: And even though i didn't like the shot, which I know a lot people did, I didn't like when he was swinging and he like landed in front the church. Dope picture once he stopped moving.
Ryan: who
tommy cresta: But the CGI of him and how he hit the wall and lands, it looks very click, click.
Ryan: yeah
tommy cresta: Instead like a smooth drop down. i always say, i don't know why I find it so weird when he's swinging because Daredevil does do that. But in my head, I'm just like, this blind dude is just swinging around the city. This dude.
tommy cresta: Like it's, but it was really cool. Once I actually saw like when they actually did a real stunt at the end, when he actually lands, it shouldn't like swing and off the side of the building and land in. That was pretty cool.
Ryan: Yeah. Yeah.
tommy cresta: But yeah, I liked the, like what were you were saying, like when he gets punched, he actually takes like, he's getting beat up. And I like how tired both of them are throughout the fight. Like they stopped, they're like leaning against the wall. You can hear him breathing and then punch, punch, punch, stop, punch, punch.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: but So I like really liked all that part of it. And
Ryan: And they both get stabbed like 10 times each. He's just wing and knives in this dude.
tommy cresta: He's breaking knives off inside of him. I'm like, oh.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: Oh, my volume might be a little high on my TV. I'm rewatching the first episode while we're talking about.
Ryan: ah
tommy cresta: And then Bullseye, before they the fight actually starts, he takes out the homie. Drops Foggy like a bad habit.
Ryan: Yeah. Yeah, man. I mean, I saw like an interview with Charlie Cox saying like, you know, it sucks that he had to die. But also when you're restarting a TV show like this, a TV show that a lot of people like, you need to take swings.
Ryan: Like you can't just say like, you know, slowly get into it. You gotta, you gotta make your fucking mark. so It sucks that Foggy had to go, but you know for what the show seems to be doing with it, I think it would it may have been the right call.
tommy cresta: No, I saw, like, I didn't know what I thought about the idea of them doing it at first, like, when the first happened. Like, i was like, oh, shit, like, that was, that was crazy that they did that. it was, like, some shock value for the show. But I was like, oh, my, is this actually going to go anywhere? Is this goingnna be the whole show? Is him trying to just take down Bullseye now because Bullseye killed his friend?
tommy cresta: Well, we quickly learned that that's not what's happening in the show.
Ryan: Yeah, but I think it's it's more impactful because it's just the show becomes him dealing with Foggy's death.
tommy cresta: Um.
Ryan: Like he gives up being Daredevil and then we'll get to episode four and that's where it really starts to like come to a head of like him not being able to accept it, that it wasn't his fault and that, you know. He still blames himself for it. So it becomes much more like a character driving thing than just like, oh, Bullseye killed my friend. I have to hurt Bullseye now.
Ryan: Like, I think that's more important to Daredevil that, you know, it's a character moment for him.
tommy cresta: Yeah, which i I now going after episode what we'll talk about what what happens in episode four. It it made me like super invested in what's going to happen the rest of the series. It's it eight episodes.
Ryan: ah I think it might be. might be a little longer.
tommy cresta: Remember originally, it's gonna be 24. Don't
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: get me wrong, I would have taken 24 hours of Daredevil.
tommy cresta: Oh, there goes Bullseye dropping civilians. are're just standing in the corner with cue balls.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: But yeah, i I thought the suit looked fucking awesome too. I like that they saturated the red more.
Ryan: yeah
tommy cresta: Again, I'm a huge, the comic suits. So like I want the two D's on the chest and everything. And Bullseye looked pretty dope.
Ryan: Yeah, I mean, that'd be cool, but...
tommy cresta: Oh,
Ryan: Oh, Bullseye looked awesome. For sure.
tommy cresta: they're in the apartment. This where things go. Dude, Bullseye really drops that dude at the top of the steps for no reason.
Ryan: He was just there.
tommy cresta: the Dude's like, hey, man, you got to get out of here. Throwing knife.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: Gets the top stairs. The woman's like, no, please. And he lay uppercuts the living shit out of that woman for no other reason but because he wants to.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: And then that scene with the lights was pretty cool.
Ryan: All right.
tommy cresta: and He takes out the light with the baton.
Ryan: Yeah. No, it was really cool. um All right. So Wikipedia is saying eight episodes. Forbes is saying nine. The original length was 18, not 24. But.
Ryan: Yeah.
Ryan: So I don't know.
tommy cresta: I would.
Ryan: Eight or nine episodes.
tommy cresta: Or 18.
Ryan: Hopefully nine. Mm
tommy cresta: Just surprise us and make it like 12.
Ryan: hmm.
tommy cresta: went It's so funny when Daredevil just stand there for say it looks out the window like to hear Foggy's heartbeat, which also really cool decision to have the way they're doing is hearing in this.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: Like when it zooms in and all that.
Ryan: I mean,
tommy cresta: ah i'm ah I'm a big fan of all that.
Ryan: yeah.
tommy cresta: But.
Ryan: I kind of like how they do trust the audience a little bit with just like hearing like, cause this is, I know it's the first episode of a technically new show, but realistically the fourth season of Daredevil.
Ryan: um I think the audience should understand the powers little bit. Like even when he's trying to figure out if somebody's lying or telling the truth, you just hear the heartbeat. They don't hold your hand at all.
Ryan: You know what I mean?
tommy cresta: Yeah, they don't tell you what's happening.
Ryan: I like that a lot.
tommy cresta: It's not like him giving an internal dialogue what he's doing.
Ryan: Yeah, like they could have shown from the Netflix show when it would go like, you know, the the world on fire type of view where he like sees it.
tommy cresta: Yeah, like how he sees things.
Ryan: I do think that's cool. I never hated that, but I do like that you just hear the heartbeat. They kind of trust the audience a little more. They don't need to flat out show it somehow.
tommy cresta: I'm fully in a grant. I never hated the idea of like the world on fire, how he sees him, but I do like the idea of more of just hearing the heart. Like how, how I think in my iteration of what I think of daredevil, I don't think of I just think of him being blind and like the sonar kind of style.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: We just, that's how I've always thought of him. So it's cool. I like that. They don't like what you're saying They don't hold your hand. You're kind of right in it. I mean, it starts at the whole season starts with this one take fight scene. Dude, he pumbles bullseye though on the top of that roof.
Ryan: Yeah, he tries to fucking kill him.
tommy cresta: That's the memes that have come out of that. Him throwing them off the roof have been so funny. But yeah, that they they do the hard thing again or not again.
tommy cresta: When they do it in the fourth episode with the cop about like seeing if he's lying and you figure out that he's not lying.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: was like, oh shit. Like, where is this going to? So you want to keep talking about episode one? We just want to talk about it in total. Just kind of like.
Ryan: I think just go in total. Just move around.
tommy cresta: All right. Because I was going to say that. So do you think Kingpin is sending the Punisher guys out?
Ryan: I don't know. i mean... It's definitely possible. Because you see, at the end of episode 4... You see that Kingpin hasn't totally turned the new leaf. Like, he's still got um Adam just fucking locked up in a basement.
Ryan: I mean... So, I think it's possible... But I also, I don't know. I don't think that's really his style. I don't know.
tommy cresta: Yeah, I know because I feel like I don't know who's going say it's not Muse. That's not Muse's thing. He just wants to kill people.
Ryan: No. It's definitely not Muse.
tommy cresta: And it's not Jon Bernthal.
Ryan: No. And it's not the cops, so.
tommy cresta: It's not that cop, at least.

tommy cresta: Maybe there's someone in charge of it.

tommy cresta: Oh, is what's his name dead from Punisher? Did he die in Punisher season two? His friend.

Ryan: Oh, I don't think um don't think he was in season... I think he may have died in season one.
tommy cresta: Does he kill him in the end of season? in some reason I thought he gets arrested in season one.
Ryan: I think something happens in season one.
tommy cresta: And then he starts wearing the mask and stuff in season two.
Ryan: and Is he in season two? I haven't watched Punisher in forever.
tommy cresta: I only watched like two episodes season two. I didn't ever watch it. My dad was a big fan it though.
Ryan: Yeah, it wasn't bad at all. The one villain, the fucking um priest guy, that dude was scary.
tommy cresta: Yeah.
tommy cresta: Oh, and the cop the cop retiring, finding out that he's it's Matt Murdock. I really like that whole little intertwining it.
Ryan: Oh, yeah.
tommy cresta: I was happy it wasn't just him giving up the suit.
tommy cresta: And Bullseye gets dropped off that roof and lives. God damn it. Think he's escaping.
Ryan: I don't know if he will this season. i think I think they're kind of done with that. and I think it was just like... you know Because again, i like I said earlier, I think Foggy's death was more than just like a catalyst for who he's going to fight. I think it was an important...
Ryan: character thing so i think i think they're probably done with bullseye for now i think you know it's bullseye it's it like his main villain so he'll for sure show up again but i don't know gonna happen in this season
tommy cresta: Oh, I did not like the hat helmet falling.
tommy cresta: and That's a weird thing. Like the slow-mo of the...
Ryan: oh like it goes into the intro yeah
tommy cresta: Yeah, I like the intro. It's a weird little picky thing, but it's a weird thing. Do you like this intro more than the Daredevil intro?
Ryan: No, I love the Daredevil intro.
tommy cresta: Okay, agreed. I like the other intro.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: I think the blood, well, wax, blood, whatever you want to say it is.
Ryan: Yeah. I just think it's classic, like, to me.
tommy cresta: So cool.
Ryan: Yeah, it's just cool looking.
tommy cresta: But yeah, then we get to, we get our first, get to see Kingpin again, which is always cool. Vincent D'Onofrio, dude's amazing as Kingpin.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: And I like that they're kind of doing a, they're doing the Kingpin becoming mayor storyline. I always really liked all that in the comics.
Ryan: Mm-hmm.
tommy cresta: But I like that there's parts of him that does, he wants to help the city.
Ryan: yeah
tommy cresta: Like, quote unquote, help the city, but.
Ryan: I mean, i think he does, but I think he also, it's like before where he was like, you know, his dad wanted to help the city, but his dad was also not the best guy, you know?
Ryan: So I think there's still a level of control that he wants, but I think he does want to protect the city, but it's how he's going to do it is the the issue. Because he's still going beat Kingpin to an extent.
tommy cresta: Oh, I thought you were going to continue.

Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: So people were, I was watching like a whole thing about people think that. So remember they were doing the reshoots and stuff and they're like, the show's not what it was originally going to be. We're changing it up. We didn't like where it was going.
tommy cresta: People think that the only difference, like someone came out that worked on the show that they were like, the only difference is that first episode is like that first scene.
Ryan: yeah

tommy cresta: but i was But then that doesn't make any sense because the whole show follows Foggy's death kind of. like it's That's the overarching issue so far.
Ryan: yeah

tommy cresta: That he's trying to find himself. but And this episode 4 got me so excited for the rest of the season. there That last like 5 minutes.
Ryan: Yeah, it was cool.
tommy cresta: o I need him to wear that black suit with the red eyes with the red D on his chest. We're not getting it but would love to see it.
Ryan: Yeah, no, it'd be cool. I did like the scene of him walking into the the little room with just all of his masks and shit. Like, it's just, he's such, I just don't, it's so weird because I never think of this version of Daredevil, or really any version that I know of, to just have like a layer like that.
Ryan: But he just walks in, they're just all there.
tommy cresta: but just hanging out.
Ryan: I don't know.
tommy cresta: who

tommy cresta: When did he get these suits?
Ryan: I don't know. We saw the yellow one in She-Hulk, and then that was it. I don't know.
tommy cresta: Don't put that shit back on.
Ryan: He's had one. No, i don't I didn't like the yellow one.
tommy cresta: It was cool. like I was just excited to see because it's so comic book. like It's the original suit.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: But it looked so bad in live action.
Ryan: Yeah, it didn't look great.
tommy cresta: but the like The black one's cool. There's the gray and red. There's the gray, black, and red. There's a lot of cool ones that are still... But I want him to wear full red. I don't want any black in the suit.
tommy cresta: I want all red. That's my only wish.

Ryan: We're getting some black in there.

Ryan: It's just cool looking.

tommy cresta: Dude, that meal is disgusting. Just cheese on chicken with a piece of asparagus. This man is back to eating this pasta and sausage.

tommy cresta: But, who else are some of the new characters we can talk about? Oh, there's Daredevil's new love interest. um Heather.
Ryan: Oh yeah, Heather. I i like her.
tommy cresta: Yeah, I have nothing against her.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: Then we get Vanessa's back, of course.
Ryan: Seems nice.
Ryan: Vanessa. Yeah. I'm happy they made her an actual character now. She's not just standing there saying nothing.
tommy cresta: Vanessa.
Ryan: Yeah. No, I do really like her actually this season. Cause like just the intro of her knowing that she just controlled the, you know, Kingpin stuff while he was away, quote unquote away.
Ryan: Like it, I'm glad they made her important. She's not just sitting in the back watching him get it, getting his ass kicked. You know what i mean? So um I'm very happy they gave her something to do and she's, she's done well with It's been a good character so far.
tommy cresta: Yeah. And then there was, um, Kamar De Los Reyes, who played White Tire, who sadly passed away.
Ryan: Mm hmm.
tommy cresta: Um...
Ryan: Also, he passed away in 2023, which is...
tommy cresta: But what...
Ryan: You just think about how long this show ah took to make.
tommy cresta: Which is crazy.
Ryan: I mean, it's crazy.
tommy cresta: And I really... I did like seeing him. I thought his storyline was really cool. Like the idea of...
Ryan: Oh, yeah. it was a great episode.
tommy cresta: Yeah.
Ryan: The whole... Yeah, episode three, the whole court stuff was really, really good.
tommy cresta: With an amazing ending.
Ryan: But it is... Yeah. No, it was kind of shocking. But... Also, I was kind of excited because I was like, okay, we're getting his his niece coming in.
Ryan: Because that's the white tiger I know is the...
tommy cresta: The girl.
Ryan: i Fuck. Yeah, I forget her name already.

Ryan: um But yeah, as soon as he got shot, and I was like, all right, she's coming eventually. And then the beginning of season four, we see her. So, yeah.
tommy cresta: Oh. i thought some reason in season 4 thought you meant Netflix version.
Ryan: Oh, episode four, sorry.
tommy cresta: I was like huh?
Ryan: Episode four.
tommy cresta: um Oh how about the fact that Michael Gandolfini is in this. And the kid who plays Tony Spratt's son is in the movie. The Ben Affleck movie.
Ryan: Is he? Huh.
tommy cresta: Yeah. He's the bully.
tommy cresta: Great movie.
Ryan: That's wonderful. Yeah, Gandolfini's done well, too.
tommy cresta: Yeah, I like his character. I liked his scene in episode four.
Ryan: Mm-hmm.
tommy cresta: With him and Kingpin.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: All him in.
Ryan: why Why do you think Kingpin kept hit him or him around?
tommy cresta: Reminds him of himself. He's an honest person.
Ryan: Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Well...
tommy cresta: Well, Kingpin's not honest, but he was being honest. And I think that Kingpin just had all that marriage counseling stuff.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: That he, like, knows where he's coming from. but he's like, if you do that again, I promise you it'll be the last thing you ever do.
Ryan: Yeah, yeah, No, i think I think you're right. I think he sees something. like He sees like another hungry kid who wants more for himself, and I think he's like, yeah, I'll keep this guy around.
tommy cresta: Good kid.
Ryan: Yeah.
tommy cresta: oh And yeah, Vincent D'Onoff, which already talked about. ah We finally got to see Jon Bernthal in episode four. Ooh, Jack, what's it called? It's going to be in this, it says.
tommy cresta: The guy that was in Hawkeye.
Ryan: Oh, the swordsman?
tommy cresta: Yeah.
Ryan: Alright.
tommy cresta: I liked him in Hawkeye.
Ryan: Sweet. Yeah, no, he was fun.

tommy cresta: Best scene now that that's connected the MCU to me. In my head at least it's canon. um That's the best one of the best scenes in MCU.

Ryan: Yeah, because they balance off each other very well because they they both think so similarly. It's just that Daredevil has this – he's got this Catholic faith. He can't kill.
Ryan: well you know He tries to kill – not Daredevil, Bullseye, but that that's his rule. He doesn't kill, whereas Punisher is just the complete opposite. And they both enjoy it to an extent. They both have the same like.
Ryan: It feels like something they need to do. It feels like something that. you know it's been It's kind of. um but What's the word I'm looking for? Like it's their calling. I guess to an extent.

Ryan: That's not the right word. Yeah like they need to do it. They both have that feeling. But it's just they have such different ways of going about it. That's why every scene they're in together. It's just so good. Because they can just bounce off each other.
